  1. okay good morning everyone lovely to be part of Easter Sunday with you all even

  2. though remotely so we've seen again this week that death is very much a part of

  3. life now that's a cliche I know but it's a true cliche I googled it this week and

  4. apparently more than 157,000 people in our world die on average every day that's

  5. about 57 million people a year and when you put that in the context of 5,000

  6. years of history and that gets to be an absolutely staggering figure a staggering

  7. death toll and of course the death toll is very personal thing isn't it because

  8. that includes countless unique people amazing people and people in who in

  9. their day were larger than life people whose influence in the world continues

  10. long after they died but in the end death got them all but this morning I want to

  11. talk to you about the person who defied the great equaliser that death the

  12. person who reversed the finality of death by coming back from the grave the

  13. person of whom we must say life was very much a part of his death so today we

  14. celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ is the person who so

  15. altered the course of history that we still talk about him 2,000 years later we

  16. still mark the event on our calendars 2,000 years later and most importantly we

  17. continue to be confronted by the consequences of his death and

  18. resurrection more than 2,000 years later we pick up the story in John chapter 20

    John 20 chapter mention

  19. and the first point if you're following through in the notes King Jesus is dead and

  20. you can't argue about the finality of death or can you well we all know that words

  21. of impact words are very very powerful Jesus had a rousing message that attracted

  22. so many over three years of his ministry but we all know that what people see

  23. impacts us far more than what we hear and so the issue we're confronting is

  24. dead means dead and here's the here's the problem for us Jesus said he was God

  25. that Jesus said he was God's Messiah God's King coming to the world to

  26. re-establish God's rule and establish a kingdom which would never ever end that

  27. Jesus said he was God's long-awaited Savior come to rescue God's people by

  28. dealing with a sin giving them new hope for the future rising word rising message but

  29. if we pick up the story this morning the king is now dead beaten humiliated

  30. ridiculed crucified as a common criminal bayoneted or speared and finally taken down

  31. dragged away and buried David Butt took us through that awful story on Friday

  32. now surely that has to be the final criteria for evaluating everything Jesus said and did

  33. a rising message over three years but the king is dead and you can't argue with death can you

  34. it's not as if it's just a mistake because these Roman soldiers they dealt with death

  35. they had blood on their hands and these Roman soldiers knew Jesus was dead

  36. at the Roman governor pilot he was used to executing people he was satisfied that Jesus was dead and

  37. actually released his body for burial at two reputable Jews

  38. Joseph and Nicodemus knew that Jesus was dead they actually embalmed his body and put it in a tomb and

  39. sealed it with a large rock that that final symbol of separating those who are dead from those who are

  40. living that large rock sealing off that tomb the tomb of the dead and even as most loyal disciples knew

  41. that Jesus was dead they just went home to grieve now whatever way you read that story you have to say

  42. what an anticlimax what an anticlimax a rising message over three years

  43. but the king is dead and you can't argue about the finality of death or can you

  44. well according to John the death and burial of Jesus was not the end of his story

  45. we pick up in verse one Mary Magdalene is at Jesus tomb before dawn in the darkness on what we would

  46. call Sunday morning three days after Jesus was crucified and she discovers the tomb open and Jesus body gone

  47. now understandably she's upset and confused and immediately reports back to Peter and John who

  48. in turn immediately went to the tomb to see for themselves and the question we have to ask and look at

  49. carefully carefully then is what did they see well traditionally and historically we've said talked

  50. about the empty tomb but of course that's not right because it wasn't quite empty so Peter and John see

  51. the not quite empty tomb yes the body of Jesus was gone but his grave clothes immediately took their

  52. attention and actually become the focus of the story because they saw the grave clothes lying undisturbed and

  53. intact but in those days when a person died their body was wrapped from head to shoulders in from

  54. feet to shoulders rather in linen strips and the linen strips were soaked in a solution of aloe which

  55. was a powdered sweet smelling wood and another product called mirror and my double r h and that was a sort of

  56. sweet smelling rosin or gum which actually solidified when went hard then back in chapter 19 we're told that

  57. about 34 kilograms of this stuff was used to wrap the body of Jesus and essentially it made a cast

  58. around the body a bit like a modern plaster cast around a broken limb

  59. and then also the naked head was wrapped with a separate turban like a piece of cloth

  60. so what Peter and John saw was the empty cast and the head cloth neatly folded and put to one side

  61. just like you'd expect if someone took it off because they no longer needed it

  62. something really unusual had happened both John and Peter recognized that

  63. if thieves had stolen the body they would have taken the cast with them that would have been the

  64. quickest and easiest way to make an exit or if they wanted the body without the cast they would have

  65. had to cut all those wraps off and chances are left chunks of flesh or at least left the cast and the

  66. strips and pieces or again if Jesus had simply been unconscious and somehow or other come around after

  67. a period of time and got himself out even if that's possible then again the wrappings would have been broken

  68. anyway the point of the story is that the tomb was undisturbed except that Jesus body was gone

  69. and it's interesting the way John writes it because the significance of this

  70. is highlighted by John in the words he uses the different words he uses for saying

  71. so what did John and Peter say well verse 5 you look in there

  72. um stooping to look in John saw the linen cloths lying there

  73. the word there is to say or blepho that's the Greek verb and it means just to observe in other

  74. words he just roamed his eyes around and took in what his eyes could see he observed the grave clothes

  75. with no body and verse 6 Peter goes right into the tomb typical Peter he just rushes in John was a

  76. little bit hesitant a bit nervous maybe I don't know but Peter just rushes in no surprise there

  77. and he sees but the word there is the or oh oh in other words the same word as we use for theorizing

  78. Peter's looking around observes the intact tomb except the body's missing and he's trying to theorize or work

  79. out the significance of intact grave clothes but no body and then verse 8 finally John joins Peter in the tomb

  80. and sees and the word there is orato in other words it's a saying that reaches a conclusion an understanding

  81. so Peter and John see with understanding finally he concludes or they conclude that something really

  82. supernatural has happened Jesus had left his burial cast somehow or other come through the burial cast

  83. without damaging or disturbing it now verses 9 and 10 are also important um and it's it's a difficult

  84. verse to understand verse 9 for as yet they did not understand the scripture that he must rise from the dead

  85. then the disciples went back to their homes so the immediate impact of the facts on Peter and John

  86. were that they believed they saw they theorized and they came to conclusion they believed the evidence

  87. for Peter and John was mind-blowing but compelling and it pointed to one conclusion Jesus was no longer dead

  88. Jesus somehow or other had come back to life and left his tomb in the most supernatural way not even disturbing

  89. the grave clothes

  90. now I think that the emphasis of verse 9 is that they didn't understand everything but they understood enough

  91. to know that the grave of Jesus was no longer their focus

  92. they didn't understand everything but they knew where he wasn't he was no longer in his grave

  93. and so verse 10 they did what you'd expect they went home to think further about the matter

  94. no longer was the grave the focus of their attention

  95. and I think the point that John's making is this that John's emphasis is that the disciples

  96. belief in the resurrection of Jesus came first based on the physical evidence before their eyes

  97. they didn't manufacture a resurrection story to agree with expectations they already had from

  98. Old Testament scriptures I think that's the point of verse 9 it wasn't as if they already knew and had

  99. clear understanding from the Old Testament that Jesus would rise from the dead no they didn't understand

  100. that that was that only came later with prompting for Jesus from Jesus only then did they understand

  101. that various Old Testament scriptures which they had read previously without understanding

  102. now became clear and added to what they'd seen physically with their own eyes the evidence that Jesus

  103. had come back from the dead Jesus had risen from the grave

  104. so that's the story at this point but the story continues and we switch focus to a very incredibly personal

  105. experience for Mary and the experience builds around the point King Jesus is alive and she says I've seen

  106. the Lord King Jesus is alive I've seen the Lord and this changes everything

  107. now when you look at verse 11 it's just sad isn't it Mary stood weeping outside the tomb remember

  108. it's it's pre-dawn it's in the darkness no lights you can just imagine the scene Mary was a deeply

  109. troubled woman now we know from other parts of the record of John that she was known she was a woman

  110. with history she was known for her sexual sin she was one of the ladies about time to use a sort of

  111. modern term she was a woman who therefore was condemned by her her fellow Jewish citizens condemned

  112. and rejected by the Jewish religious leaders condemned by God's law Mary had only a bleak future of

  113. hopelessness to look forward to but Mary had found new hope of salvation and belonging in the teaching of

  114. Jesus it's interesting that you might recall only a few days earlier the extent of the hope that Mary

  115. had now placed in Jesus was expressed in her pouring a super expensive oil on him we're told in the text

  116. that it cost about a year's worth of wages to buy the stuff and there was Mary just pouring all over Jesus

  117. it was a demonstration of her total commitment to Jesus and her total trust in Jesus in Jesus she saw

  118. something that gave her hope when the Jewish religious system when her own religion left her hopeless and

  119. despairing but Mary before us again this morning in this story here she is standing in the darkness

  120. weeping bitterly her hopes had died and were buried with Jesus

  121. that's an incredible statement in her hopes had died and were buried with Jesus and she's left weeping

  122. despairing engulfed by both physical and spiritual darkness as she recognizes that with Jesus body gone she can't even

  123. grieve probably not only is is the hope that she had in Jesus cause gone but the body's gone she can't even

  124. grieve she can't touch him she can't do that process that we all know to be such an important part of of relational

  125. things even at the end of a relationship well at that very point

  126. Mary's

  127. Mary's darkness and despair is dispelled

  128. first

  129. two angels appear to her

  130. and then Jesus himself appears and speaks directly

  131. so that she knows he is alive

  132. and it's just a very very moving

  133. story that John records

  134. here's this woman and you wonder why she's even there because

  135. if any woman was going to be there and that's quite countercultural for a Jewish story to record a woman as a

  136. as a focus

  137. but if any woman was going to be there you might expect a Jesus mother to be there but no

  138. this

  139. woman with history with dubious character

  140. this woman who had put so much hope in Jesus

  141. is here in despair and weeping

  142. and yet when Jesus speaks to her we can just sense the renewed hope and joy surging through our body

  143. and becomes a confident statement to the disciples

  144. I have seen the Lord

  145. so what Peter and John had derived from physical evidence

  146. Jesus

  147. Mary learned directly both as revealed truth

  148. and experiential truth

  149. used both those terms last week when they speak

  150. Jesus engages Mary relationally

  151. Mary he speaks to her

  152. he calls her by her name

  153. and her troubled dark heart

  154. is filled with truth

  155. and light

  156. and life

  157. not only

  158. is Jesus

  159. not in the grave anymore

  160. but he's alive

  161. he's out there

  162. he's on the loose

  163. and he's engaging Mary

  164. and replacing

  165. dispelling darkness

  166. and despair

  167. with hope

  168. and light

  169. and life

  170. look at verse 17

  171. a wonderful verse in there

  172. Jesus said to her

  173. do not cling to me

  174. I guess she must have thrown herself at his feet or something like that

  175. do not cling to me for I have not yet ascended to the Father

  176. but go to my brothers

  177. and say to them

  178. I am ascending to my Father

  179. and your Father

  180. to my God

  181. and your God

  182. now that's a

  183. that's a chock-a-block full of wonderful things type verse

  184. go to my brothers

  185. says Jesus

  186. tell them

  187. go to my

  188. I am ascending to my Father

  189. and your Father

  190. your Father Mary

  191. your God Mary

  192. the significance of this verse

  193. well

  194. so many things can be said about it

  195. Jesus

  196. is confirming

  197. that he has done

  198. what he said he would do

  199. as God's King and Saviour

  200. just a week earlier

  201. remember back to chapter 14

  202. and that was only a few days earlier

  203. five or six days earlier

  204. chapter 14

  205. Jesus said to his people

  206. do not be troubled in heart

  207. I'm going away in death

  208. to prepare a place in heaven for you

  209. and then verse 6 of that same chapter

  210. over that meal that night

  211. only six days earlier

  212. Jesus also said

  213. I am the way

  214. the truth

  215. and the life

  216. no person comes to the Father

  217. but through me

  218. now

  219. in the words of a

  220. Colby Cannon song

  221. what Mary

  222. the lost

  223. and despairing

  224. needs most

  225. is to find the way

  226. back to God

  227. what Mary

  228. the confused

  229. and deceived

  230. needs most

  231. is the truth

  232. that will set her free

  233. from sin and death

  234. what Mary

  235. the dead

  236. in her sins

  237. needs most

  238. is life

  239. eternal

  240. abundant life

  241. and verse 17 here

  242. tells us that

  243. Mary had

  244. all her needs

  245. met

  246. in Jesus'

  247. death and resurrection

  248. all her needs

  249. were confirmed

  250. as being met

  251. in this one encounter

  252. Jesus' resurrection

  253. had changed

  254. everything for Mary

  255. and the first disciples

  256. Jesus

  257. in speaking to her

  258. in being there

  259. confirmed that he is God

  260. who else

  261. has power

  262. and authority

  263. to come and go

  264. in his world

  265. as he needs to

  266. death could not

  267. hold him

  268. and now he says

  269. he will go back

  270. to his father

  271. and to his throne

  272. in heaven

  273. having completed

  274. his salvation task

  275. powerful

  276. irrefutable

  277. compelling evidence

  278. that Jesus

  279. is God

  280. and Jesus

  281. confirms that

  282. Mary was right

  283. to put her

  284. confidence

  285. and hope

  286. in him

  287. both she

  288. and the disciples

  289. are now

  290. in new

  291. relationship

  292. with the fathers

  293. through Jesus

  294. they have new

  295. family

  296. with Jesus

  297. my brothers

  298. says Jesus

  299. they have new

  300. family

  301. with Jesus

  302. your father

  303. your God

  304. he speaks to Mary

  305. she who was distant

  306. and cut off

  307. from God

  308. because of our sin

  309. is now

  310. in new

  311. relationship

  312. with the father

  313. personal relationship

  314. with the father

  315. through Jesus

  316. new family

  317. new security

  318. which guarantees

  319. they will go to be

  320. with the father

  321. as Jesus will

  322. as he ascends

  323. so they will

  324. ascend

  325. and enjoy

  326. a resurrection

  327. with Jesus

  328. now friends

  329. there's the evidence

  330. compelling evidence

  331. and the evidence

  332. that King Jesus

  333. has risen

  334. and is alive

  335. and is on the loose

  336. still demands

  337. a verdict

  338. from you

  339. in 2020

  340. that's John

  341. purpose

  342. in writing

  343. the biography

  344. we'll see that

  345. next week

  346. John's purpose

  347. in writing

  348. this biography

  349. of the life

  350. of Jesus

  351. is to present

  352. the evidence

  353. that he believes

  354. will cause people

  355. to believe

  356. that Jesus

  357. is God

  358. and Savior

  359. and as a result

  360. find eternal life

  361. John's convinced

  362. that if people

  363. will only give

  364. the evidence

  365. a chance

  366. then they will

  367. be brought

  368. they will theorize

  369. like Peter

  370. and they'll be brought

  371. to a position

  372. of understanding

  373. that conclusion

  374. that Jesus

  375. is alive

  376. Jesus is God

  377. Jesus is God's Savior

  378. and that

  379. therefore

  380. everything

  381. is changed

  382. now

  383. here's a problem

  384. the evidence

  385. is compelling

  386. yet so many

  387. refuse to believe

  388. why is that

  389. do you think

  390. well

  391. it's very common

  392. to blame

  393. a lack of belief

  394. on a lack

  395. of evidence

  396. but that's

  397. just not right

  398. the evidence

  399. is compelling

  400. more likely

  401. in reality

  402. they don't believe

  403. because they don't

  404. like the implications

  405. of the evidence

  406. they don't like

  407. the implications

  408. of belief

  409. see here's how

  410. it works

  411. because if you

  412. believe in Jesus

  413. if you believe

  414. that Jesus is God

  415. that he really

  416. did beat death

  417. that he really

  418. came back

  419. that he's now

  420. alive

  421. and on the loose

  422. and at large

  423. in his own world

  424. ruling as God's

  425. King and Savior

  426. then that

  427. must force

  428. an admission

  429. from you

  430. the admission

  431. must be

  432. that I am not

  433. a good person

  434. that I

  435. of my own

  436. character

  437. my own nature

  438. I'm entitled

  439. to heaven

  440. and that I can

  441. sort of do

  442. some sort of

  443. bargain

  444. with God

  445. saying well

  446. of course

  447. I'm not as good

  448. as I could be

  449. but I'm not as bad

  450. as I could be either

  451. and so I'm entitled

  452. to heaven

  453. now belief

  454. in the resurrection

  455. of Jesus

  456. forces us

  457. to admit

  458. that that's not

  459. the case

  460. Jesus died

  461. to bring

  462. people like you

  463. and me

  464. into heaven

  465. and then

  466. this belief

  467. in Jesus

  468. forces the

  469. recognition

  470. that if

  471. Jesus

  472. is King

  473. and Savior

  474. then I

  475. must live

  476. all of life

  477. under his

  478. authority

  479. and that

  480. means

  481. and this is

  482. the really

  483. hard bit

  484. for most

  485. people

  486. that means

  487. giving up

  488. my autonomy

  489. there can't

  490. be two kings

  491. I can't be

  492. king of my

  493. life

  494. and be

  495. autonomous

  496. and at

  497. the same

  498. time

  499. claim

  500. to live

  501. under

  502. the rule

  503. of the

  504. Lord

  505. Jesus

  506. Christ

  507. and that

  508. is so hard

  509. for us

  510. we don't

  511. want to

  512. give up

  513. our autonomy

  514. and the

  515. irony

  516. of the

  517. Easter story

  518. is in the

  519. words of

  520. Jesus

  521. in verse

  522. 15

  523. he says

  524. who are

  525. you seeking

  526. whom

  527. are you

  528. seeking

  529. and here's

  530. the problem

  531. for us

  532. we long

  533. to be

  534. accepted

  535. with God

  536. we are

  537. seeking

  538. someone

  539. who will

  540. make us

  541. acceptable

  542. with God

  543. who will

  544. take us

  545. home to

  546. heaven

  547. we long

  548. to have

  549. security

  550. and hope

  551. given that

  552. we're so

  553. fragile

  554. and given

  555. that death

  556. is a

  557. certain

  558. part of

  559. life

  560. but we'd

  561. rather miss

  562. out on the

  563. way

  564. the truth

  565. and the

  566. life

  567. rather than

  568. give up

  569. our autonomy

  570. rather than

  571. totally commit

  572. to Jesus

  573. as Mary

  574. did

  575. so often

  576. people turn

  577. and walk

  578. away from

  579. Jesus

  580. even though

  581. he's the

  582. one that

  583. they've been

  584. seeking all

  585. their lifetime

  586. so friends

  587. Jesus'

  588. resurrection

  589. changes

  590. and it

  591. demands

  592. we change

  593. how we

  594. think about

  595. him

  596. how we

  597. think about

  598. ourselves

  599. I started

  600. by saying

  601. that death

  602. is very

  603. much a

  604. part of

  605. our life

  606. well

  607. I end

  608. by saying

  609. that Jesus

  610. backs the

  611. trend

  612. and offers

  613. us

  614. the life

  615. that is

  616. very much

  617. a part

  618. of his

  619. death

  620. this is

  621. why

  622. Easter

  623. is so

  624. offensive

  625. because there's

  626. not room

  627. for King

  628. me

  629. and King

  630. Jesus

  631. but there's

  632. also why

  633. Easter is

  634. so wonderful

  635. at the

  636. same time

  637. Jesus

  638. says to

  639. Mary

  640. why are

  641. you

  642. weeping

  643. in despair

  644. Mary

  645. there is

  646. no

  647. nothing

  648. so out

  649. of place

  650. as weeping

  651. in despair

  652. in the

  653. presence

  654. of the

  655. resurrected

  656. Jesus

  657. who brings

  658. life

  659. and light

  660. and hope

  661. and security

  662. so

  663. Easter

  664. is it

  665. something that

  666. will be

  667. offensive to

  668. you

  669. or something

  670. that will be

  671. wonderful to

  672. you

  673. hopefully

  674. it's something

  675. that begins

  676. as an offence

  677. to you

  678. and challenges

  679. you

  680. and then

  681. reshapes you

  682. so it becomes

  683. wonderful to

  684. you

  685. but the question

  686. remains a very

  687. simple

  688. bland but

  689. profound question

  690. what will

  691. the Jesus

  692. who came

  693. back from

  694. the dead

  695. be to

  696. you

  697. thank you

  698. very much

  699. for listening

  700. I'm going to

  701. pray

  702. and hopefully

  703. you'll join me

  704. in prayer

  705. and then we'll

  706. throw back

  707. to Rob

  708. Lord

  709. we echo

  710. your words

  711. to Mary

  712. why are

  713. you weeping

  714. we identify

  715. with Mary

  716. Lord

  717. caught up

  718. in

  719. sometimes

  720. the despair

  721. of life

  722. sometimes

  723. Lord

  724. we're just

  725. reduced

  726. by our

  727. fragility

  728. to

  729. sadness

  730. and weeping

  731. we thank

  732. you Lord

  733. at that

  734. very point

  735. of need

  736. you spoke

  737. into Mary's

  738. life

  739. dispelled

  740. her despair

  741. and

  742. made hope

  743. new hope

  744. and confidence

  745. and security

  746. and life

  747. surge

  748. through her

  749. body

  750. and I

  751. pray

  752. Lord

  753. that you

  754. might

  755. do that

  756. for each

  757. one of us

  758. listening in

  759. today

  760. that you

  761. might

  762. re-energize

  763. us for those

  764. of us who are

  765. ready

  766. committed to

  767. serving you

  768. fill us again

  769. Lord with the

  770. admiration

  771. of your love

  772. for us

  773. and the desire

  774. to serve you

  775. better

  776. and for those

  777. Lord who might

  778. be listening

  779. this morning

  780. who still

  781. want to be

  782. king

  783. in their own

  784. lives

  785. Lord

  786. confront

  787. and break

  788. down that

  789. opposition

  790. so they

  791. might seek

  792. you

  793. the living

  794. Lord

  795. and know

  796. life

  797. life eternal

  798. life abundant

  799. pray this in

  800. Jesus name

  801. Amen

  802. Amen

  803. Amen

  804. Amen

  805. drum

  806. up

  807. есте

  808. Holy

  809. beams

  810. through

  811. march

  812. health

  813. amen

  814. zh
