  1. Well friends, I'm very grateful to be with you and what a beautiful place this is.

  2. I've never been here before.

  3. I mean, I've been around Lake Macquarie before, but I haven't been to this particular spot.

  4. It really is lovely, isn't it?

  5. I'm looking forward to seeing it in the morning.

  6. And congratulations on getting here.

  7. It's very difficult on a Friday afternoon, Friday evening to get to places in particular.

  8. Congratulations to anyone who's come with children.

  9. I always admire very much parents with young kids who manage to get away to weekends like this.

  10. It's really, really hard work.

  11. You probably won't get any sleep tonight if you're in that category.

  12. They'll sleep tomorrow night.

  13. They'll be absolutely exhausted.

  14. But well done for coming because it really is worthwhile and a great contribution to everyone else that you make the effort to be here.

  15. I'm sure that a number of people in that category will have understandably decided to come tomorrow.

  16. They're the wimps, of course.

  17. But that's understandable.

  18. We look forward to welcoming them.

  19. Friends, this weekend I'm doing something I haven't done before and I warn you of that.

  20. I'm not sure it's going to work all that well.

  21. So you're the guinea pigs.

  22. I want to look with you a little bit at this extraordinary, extraordinary man in the pages of the Bible by the name of Elisha.

  23. We'll only be having some glimpses.

  24. And particularly tonight I'm going to be just really talking around introducing the subject, looking at why we're looking at this subject, trying to set some sort of context for it.

  25. And we will before we get to the end, at least that's my plan, we will actually meet Elisha briefly tonight.

  26. And then we'll be dipping into just a few little points in his life.

  27. The story is a big story, a really, really important story for reasons that I hope will become clear.

  28. But it's a strange thing to be doing.

  29. Elisha lived round about 850 years before the birth of Jesus.

  30. So we're going back a long, long way.

  31. He was living in Israel, that part of the world that always seems to be turbulent.

  32. And it was turbulent in his days.

  33. But you could be forgiven if you start wondering, come on, of all the things we could be doing this weekend, of all the things we could be thinking about in our troubled world,

  34. if all the things we could be putting our minds to, you're going to take us back 2,000 plus 850 years to look at a man way back then?

  35. Yes, that's what we're going to do.

  36. And I hope that you will see that it really is a very, very important thing that we're doing.

  37. So before we introduce him, I want to spend a few minutes thinking about why we're doing this.

  38. The Bible is remarkable.

  39. Now I think if you're a Christian person you know that.

  40. But I wonder whether we appreciate just how remarkable.

  41. I've been reminded recently of the dimensions of how remarkable the Bible is.

  42. I've been reading what I think is quite an important new book by a highly respected historian by the name of Tom Holland.

  43. He's not a Christian believer.

  44. That's important to remember.

  45. He's not a Christian believer.

  46. But he demonstrates in this major book, it's a big book, and it's been very widely read and it's very widely respected.

  47. And he demonstrates that it was the Bible that introduced to the world ideas like human rights, equality, freedom, tolerance,

  48. and quite a number of other really important values that are recognised and valued by almost everyone in a country like Australia.

  49. We have debates around them, of course.

  50. But there are not that many people in Australia who want to dismiss those ideas as not valuable ideas.

  51. And what he demonstrates is that apart from the influence of the Bible, societies and cultures have not developed those important concepts.

  52. And he has come to understand that almost everything that he loves in today's world, although he himself is not a Christian believer,

  53. has come from the influence of the Bible.

  54. He has this really intriguing question.

  55. He asks, this is one of many questions.

  56. He asks, how did the human race ever learn, listen to this one, how did the human race ever learn that it is more noble to suffer than to inflict suffering?

  57. Now, I think if you talk to almost anyone in Australia today, they'd agree with that proposition as a generalisation.

  58. Okay?

  59. That it's more noble to suffer than to inflict suffering.

  60. Tom Holland points out that no ancient society believed that.

  61. And it was the suffering of Jesus on the cross and the impact of the gospel message about the death of Jesus on the world where that message has gone

  62. that taught us, that was unheard of in the world before.

  63. Or in the world uninfluenced by Jesus, that is, by the Bible.

  64. I found the Tom Holland story quite fascinating.

  65. I still can't quite work out why he isn't a Christian, but he's not.

  66. And he's quite emphatic that he's not.

  67. That's another story.

  68. But he's a man who, in his youth, in his childhood, did go to Sunday school and learnt the Sunday school stories.

  69. And he tells the story of how, in those days, he found that he was much more interested by all the bad people in the Bible.

  70. He was fascinated by the Egyptians and the Romans and the Babylonians and the Assyrians.

  71. And he grew up to become a historical scholar.

  72. And he's written major books, major scholarly books on those groups of people.

  73. But he came to a point about something like 15, 20 years ago, when he said,

  74. I'm fascinated by the Assyrians, the Babylonians and the Egyptians and the Romans, but I don't love them.

  75. I love the culture that I have been brought up in, and I love lots of things about it, but I don't love any of these cultures.

  76. And so he set out on a scholarly exercise, and it took about 15 years, and only last year this book was published,

  77. where he came to the conclusion, and it's being widely accepted, it is being debated, but it's being widely accepted.

  78. I'm quite sure he's right.

  79. He's right on the money and the conclusions he's come to.

  80. But he's come to the conclusion that all of those things that he loves, like respect for human rights,

  81. like the equality of human beings, like it's more noble to suffer than to inflict suffering,

  82. the things that he sees as quite distinctive have all come from the Bible.

  83. However, it's more than that.

  84. And I'm not sure that Tom Holland actually grasps this bit.

  85. Because the Bible has had this powerful impact on the world, and so much of the world,

  86. as a side effect of its main purpose.

  87. See, the Bible's own claim is that in this book, God himself addresses the human race.

  88. That's what the Bible claims.

  89. It is not primarily a book about human rights, and equality, and freedom, and tolerance, and suffering, and so on.

  90. It's a book about the God who created all things, and who has done so purposefully,

  91. and is committed to bringing his good purposes for all things to completion.

  92. The Bible tells us the story that makes sense of the world and of human life.

  93. True sense.

  94. As we read and learn from the Bible, we're learning from God himself, from our Creator.

  95. The Bible is what God wants humans to know, as they live the lives that he has given them in the world that he has made.

  96. If that's what the Bible is, and Tom Holland doesn't get this,

  97. but if that's what the Bible is, it's no surprise that it's had a huge impact,

  98. and that the impact has been so very, very largely for good,

  99. indisputably for good,

  100. on the societies and cultures into which the Bible has come,

  101. and been heard, and had an impact.

  102. But that is a side effect of the purpose of the Bible,

  103. which is summed up in the words, I'll just take the words of 2 Timothy 3, verse 15,

    2 Timothy 3:15

  104. if you're taking notes, which describes the Bible like this,

  105. the sacred writings which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

  106. Now friends, that's what God wants us to know.

  107. That's how our lives connect to God's purpose for the whole of his creation.

  108. As we listen to the Bible, any and every part of the Bible,

  109. we can learn lots of things.

  110. We can learn about human rights and equality and freedom and so on.

  111. That's fine.

  112. But God's purpose for the Bible, that he has given us,

  113. is that we will be drawn to Jesus Christ,

  114. and that we'll learn to trust him,

  115. and so be saved.

  116. Now let's remember that,

  117. as we travel back in time,

  118. to the 850s BC,

  119. to meet the remarkable man whose story we'll be glancing at together.

  120. We'll just be dipping into his story.

  121. We'll start in a few moments.

  122. We're going to leave an awful lot of his story untouched,

  123. but that's all right.

  124. That's the limited time we have.

  125. The man's name, as I've mentioned,

  126. is Elisha,

  127. and his story starts in the passage that was read to us a few moments ago

  128. at the end of 1 Kings 19.

  129. His story continues into the book of 2 Kings,

  130. and since my guess is that these books,

  131. 1 and 2 Kings,

  132. are not exactly the most familiar books in the Bible,

  133. I want to take a few moments now to sketch what 1 and 2 Kings are about.

  134. Okay, we're doing a lot of introductory work tonight.

  135. Sorry we're doing that on a Friday night when everybody's a bit weary,

  136. but just see if you can bear with me.

  137. Stand up and walk around if it helps,

  138. whatever you want to do.

  139. But I want to sketch what these books of 1 and 2 Kings are about,

  140. and we're going to think,

  141. well, what's the significance of the story they tell

  142. before we come back and look at this particular character?

  143. 1 Kings,

  144. and the notes might help you just to follow what I'm saying here.

  145. 1 Kings begins with who?

  146. Tell me who's at the beginning of 1 Kings.

  147. Who's the big guy at the beginning of 1 Kings?

  148. Solomon, yes.

  149. Solomon.

  150. Solomon, the son of?

  151. The great King David.

  152. And at the beginning of 1 Kings,

  153. Solomon becomes king.

  154. King of God's Old Testament people, Israel.

  155. And what a king he was.

  156. I don't know whether you've read the story of Solomon's kingdom recently.

  157. I have.

  158. You may remember that God had made a promise to David,

  159. Solomon's father,

  160. that a son of David would one day reign over a kingdom

  161. that would never end.

  162. That promise is back in 2 Samuel chapter 7.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  163. Christians know that the son of David

  164. who fulfills that promise really is Jesus.

  165. But long, long before Jesus,

  166. there was David's son Solomon.

  167. And for a short time,

  168. it would have been possible to think

  169. that Solomon's kingdom was the promised kingdom

  170. because it was so good.

  171. It was a kingdom of peace.

  172. There was no war.

  173. There was no conflict.

  174. There were no external threats.

  175. It was a kingdom of prosperity.

  176. The economy went really, really well

  177. in King Solomon's kingdom.

  178. And Solomon himself was a good king.

  179. A wise king.

  180. And I reckon,

  181. if you'd been there,

  182. then,

  183. you may well have thought,

  184. this is it.

  185. We've arrived.

  186. This is not only what God promised David,

  187. it's what God promised Abraham

  188. centuries earlier again.

  189. That the descendants of Abraham

  190. would enjoy God's blessing

  191. and they would be a blessing to the world.

  192. That's what Solomon's kingdom felt like.

  193. It felt like we'd arrived.

  194. It was so, so good.

  195. One of the things that Solomon did,

  196. perhaps the most important thing he did,

  197. was to build a magnificent building in Jerusalem.

  198. We often call it the temple.

  199. The Bible doesn't actually call it the temple.

  200. Sorry, in 1 and 2 Kings,

  201. it's not called the temple.

  202. It's called the house for the name of the Lord.

  203. We're not going into any more details of Solomon here,

  204. but life in Solomon's kingdom

  205. could be summed up by the words

  206. of 1 Kings 4, verse 20.

    1 Kings 4:20

  207. It goes like this,

  208. Judah and Israel were as many as the sand by the sea.

  209. They ate and they drank and they were happy.

  210. Good days.

  211. No bushfires.

  212. No coronavirus.

  213. None of the troubles of our world.

  214. It was a great, great time.

  215. It was, in fact, an anticipation,

  216. a kind of foretaste, if you like,

  217. a kind of picture of the kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  218. We can now see that looking back.

  219. The kingdom that Jesus will finally bring.

  220. And as such, Solomon's kingdom was the high point

  221. of the whole Old Testament story.

  222. But, as I'm sure you know,

  223. Solomon's kingdom did not last.

  224. Indeed, one of the lessons of the story of Solomon's kingdom

  225. is this,

  226. that Solomon,

  227. great and good though he was,

  228. was not great or good enough.

  229. And indeed, in his old age,

  230. he lost the plot badly.

  231. He got involved with a whole lot of foreign women

  232. who, we're told in 1 Kings chapter 11,

    1 Kings 11 chapter mention

  233. turned away his heart after other gods

  234. and his heart was not wholly true

  235. to the Lord his God.

  236. And he introduced the worship

  237. of these other gods into Israel.

  238. And with them,

  239. the corruption that always goes

  240. with having gods that are not God.

  241. And to cut a long story short,

  242. Solomon's great kingdom collapsed.

  243. After he died,

  244. it split into two inferior kingdoms.

  245. That's 1 Kings chapter 12.

    1 Kings 12 chapter mention

  246. In the north,

  247. was the kingdom that retained the name Israel.

  248. To the south,

  249. there was a smaller kingdom

  250. that was known as Judah.

  251. Judah had Jerusalem.

  252. Judah had the house for the name of the Lord

  253. that Solomon had built.

  254. The throne in Judah

  255. was passed on generation after generation

  256. to descendants of David and Solomon.

  257. But in Israel,

  258. the northern bit,

  259. the northern breakaway kingdom,

  260. the throne kept changing hands,

  261. very often by an assassination

  262. or a coup of some kind.

  263. The kings in the north consistently adopted

  264. and maintained policies

  265. to keep their people away from Jerusalem,

  266. away from the house for the name of the Lord,

  267. away from the son of David

  268. who was reigning down there,

  269. away from any possibility of them hearing

  270. the promises that God had made to his people,

  271. promises that they may well hear

  272. if they went to Jerusalem.

  273. Well, eventually,

  274. a king came to power

  275. in the north

  276. who was the worst king Israel had ever known.

  277. He was the seventh king

  278. up there in the north

  279. in the first 50 years

  280. of the breakaway kingdom of Israel

  281. and his name was Ahab.

  282. He married a foreign pagan wife.

  283. His name has become quite famous.

  284. She was Queen Jezebel.

  285. Jezebel was a fanatical worshipper

  286. of the pagan god Baal.

  287. All this is at the end of 1 Kings chapter 16.

    1 Kings 16 chapter mention

  288. And these were very dark days in Israel.

  289. Jezebel, I tell you,

  290. she was one powerful lady.

  291. Ahab was weak, really.

  292. And the worship of Baal,

  293. which Jezebel was so keen on,

  294. was pushed and promoted

  295. while the worshippers of the Lord

  296. were persecuted.

  297. Many of them, in fact, were killed.

  298. Well, it's in these days,

  299. King Ahab, Queen Jezebel,

  300. it's in these days

  301. that an utterly extraordinary man

  302. suddenly appears in the story.

  303. You're not given much background.

  304. He just sort of appears.

  305. His name was Elijah.

  306. Not Elisha yet.

  307. Elijah.

  308. And the meaning of Elijah's name

  309. is my God is Yahweh.

  310. Are you familiar with Yahweh?

  311. Yahweh is the name of God

  312. in the Old Testament.

  313. It's represented in our Bibles

  314. when they put L-O-R-D in capital letters.

  315. Behind that is the Hebrew name Yahweh.

  316. My name is Yahweh.

  317. My name is the Lord.

  318. I sort of imagine Elijah coming in.

  319. You've got to remember that

  320. in the Hebrew language,

  321. the names, the meanings of names

  322. are very obvious.

  323. If you're a speaker of the language.

  324. And so Elijah would have come in

  325. and said,

  326. Hello, Your Majesty.

  327. My God is Yahweh.

  328. He was sort of introducing himself,

  329. but he was making a statement

  330. at the same time.

  331. And Elijah,

  332. giant of a man that he was,

  333. made a huge impact

  334. on Ahab

  335. and on the people

  336. of the Northern Kingdom.

  337. I'm sure you can remember

  338. the most famous event

  339. in which that happened.

  340. That was on Mount Carmel

  341. when Elijah confronted

  342. the 450 prophets of Baal

  343. and demonstrated

  344. who really is God

  345. in no uncertain terms.

  346. That's 1 Kings chapter 18.

    1 Kings 18 chapter mention

  347. Well, it was not long after

  348. that spectacular event

  349. that Elisha

  350. enters the story.

  351. We're going to come back

  352. to that moment

  353. very shortly.

  354. 1 Kings ends, however,

  355. with the death of Ahab

  356. and his son Ahaziah

  357. comes to the throne in Israel.

  358. But Ahaziah was no better

  359. than his dad.

  360. And you turn the page

  361. and you come to 2 Kings.

  362. Ahaziah's still on the throne,

  363. at least for the first chapter.

  364. Elijah's still around,

  365. but not for long.

  366. And when Elijah departs

  367. from this world

  368. in a rather unusual way

  369. in 2 Kings chapter 2,

    2 Kings 2 chapter mention

  370. which we'll look at

  371. tomorrow morning,

  372. Elisha's story

  373. begins in earnest

  374. and continues through

  375. to 2 Kings chapter 13.

    2 Kings 13 chapter mention

  376. And then the rest

  377. of 2 Kings,

  378. I can sum up fairly quickly,

  379. the rest of 2 Kings

  380. tells the story

  381. of the continued decline

  382. of that northern kingdom

  383. until eventually

  384. it was just utterly destroyed

  385. and wiped off

  386. the face of the earth

  387. by the Assyrians.

  388. That's 2 Kings 17.

  389. The year is about

  390. 722 BC by now.

  391. And then we're told

  392. for the rest of the book

  393. how the southern kingdom

  394. of Judah,

  395. you don't hear all that much

  396. about the southern kingdom

  397. of Judah up to this point,

  398. but now we turn our attention

  399. to the southern kingdom

  400. of Judah.

  401. It followed the ways

  402. that had been introduced

  403. in Israel in the north.

  404. And by the end

  405. of 2 Kings,

  406. the surviving inhabitants

  407. of Judah

  408. have been taken off

  409. into exile

  410. by the Babylonians

  411. to Babylonia,

  412. while the city

  413. of Jerusalem

  414. and the house

  415. for the name

  416. of the Lord

  417. were flattened,

  418. destroyed,

  419. demolished.

  420. The story

  421. of 2 Kings

  422. is not a happy one.

  423. Now,

  424. I hope you're still awake.

  425. I can see some of you

  426. still are.

  427. I won't worry about

  428. those of you

  429. who dropped off.

  430. I've sketched this

  431. rather long story

  432. because we need to see

  433. Elisha's story

  434. in its historical context.

  435. But we do need

  436. to ask the question,

  437. what is this story

  438. about?

  439. What is this history

  440. of this people

  441. of Israel

  442. really about?

  443. What are we meant

  444. to learn

  445. from this sad story

  446. of a failed state

  447. so long ago

  448. and so far away?

  449. It was so wonderful

  450. at the beginning

  451. in Solomon's day

  452. and gradually

  453. it just crumpled away

  454. and in the end

  455. death and destruction

  456. everywhere.

  457. Well, it seems to me

  458. that as we follow

  459. the decline and fall

  460. of this people,

  461. as they and their kings

  462. turned their backs

  463. on the God

  464. who had given them

  465. so much,

  466. it is frankly depressing.

  467. I find 2 Kings

  468. a terribly depressing book.

  469. I'm supposed to be

  470. doing some work

  471. on the book of 2 Kings

  472. and I've started it.

  473. It's hard to write

  474. a little commentary

  475. on the book of 2 Kings

  476. and I get so depressed

  477. every time I open it.

  478. I haven't written

  479. anything for months.

  480. It's a very depressing book

  481. so some of you

  482. can come and encourage me

  483. and tell me

  484. it's not all that bad.

  485. But I think

  486. what is particularly depressing

  487. about the book of 2 Kings

  488. is that Israel

  489. and Judah

  490. are so like

  491. the world

  492. in which we live.

  493. Israel's miserable history,

  494. Judah's miserable history

  495. is too much like

  496. the miserable history

  497. of our world.

  498. That's why

  499. when you get into it

  500. and start to take it seriously

  501. I think it really is

  502. so depressing.

  503. The story of Israel,

  504. and I say Israel

  505. because originally

  506. the whole nation

  507. is Israel

  508. and then you've got

  509. the two nations

  510. Israel and Judah

  511. but by Israel

  512. I mean the whole lot.

  513. The story of Israel

  514. is a kind of

  515. small scale version

  516. of the story

  517. of our world.

  518. If you think about it,

  519. think of Solomon's kingdom

  520. there

  521. and how it all ended up.

  522. God gave us

  523. so much.

  524. The beginning of the world

  525. as the Bible presents it to us

  526. was sort of like

  527. Solomon's kingdom

  528. and indeed

  529. as you read through

  530. 1 Kings 1 to 11

  531. and if you do that

  532. in your own time

  533. over the coming weeks

  534. you might like to look out

  535. for this.

  536. You hear all sorts of

  537. echoes and reminders

  538. of Genesis 1 and 2

  539. and as we follow

  540. the kings

  541. and the people

  542. turning away from God

  543. refusing to live lives

  544. of thankfulness to God

  545. refusing to trust God

  546. refusing to obey God

  547. it's sort of like

  548. a rerun of the

  549. Genesis 3 story

  550. and so it is like

  551. the world we now

  552. find ourselves in

  553. and as Israel

  554. and Judah

  555. collapse

  556. we're quite right

  557. to see a reflection

  558. like in a mirror

  559. of the disintegration

  560. of our world

  561. at so many levels

  562. and in so many ways.

  563. The history of Israel

  564. in the pages

  565. of the Old Testament

  566. is like a kind of

  567. representation

  568. in miniature

  569. of the history

  570. of the world.

  571. That's a cheery thought

  572. isn't it

  573. for this time

  574. on a Friday night?

  575. But

  576. the history of Israel

  577. in 1 and 2 Kings

  578. raises

  579. the question

  580. that the history

  581. of our world

  582. raises

  583. namely

  584. what hope

  585. is there?

  586. I don't know

  587. whether you think

  588. about these sort of

  589. things seriously

  590. most of us do

  591. at certain times

  592. of life

  593. and I think

  594. I've got to a stage

  595. of life

  596. where I find myself

  597. thinking about

  598. these things a lot.

  599. You could very easily

  600. think,

  601. couldn't you?

  602. as you look at

  603. the world we're in

  604. at the moment

  605. you could very easily

  606. think that God

  607. has given up

  608. on our world

  609. and I'll tell you

  610. what,

  611. you could easily

  612. think that he was

  613. fully justified

  614. in doing so.

  615. a friend of mine

  616. a Christian leader

  617. up in

  618. New England

  619. I'll leave his name

  620. out because

  621. when I'm telling

  622. a story about him

  623. it's a good story

  624. but I was driving

  625. with him

  626. round Armidale

  627. way at one

  628. stage

  629. and he

  630. just turned to me

  631. and said

  632. you know

  633. I wouldn't be

  634. surprised if God

  635. never sent rain

  636. on this land again.

  637. he was thinking

  638. just of the

  639. godlessness

  640. of Australia

  641. and the

  642. well

  643. it's not too much

  644. to say

  645. is it

  646. the hatred

  647. of Christianity

  648. that is starting

  649. to permeate

  650. our public life

  651. that's not true

  652. of every individual

  653. of course it's not

  654. but of the national

  655. life

  656. the public life

  657. you could easily

  658. think

  659. couldn't you

  660. that if God

  661. has given up

  662. on us

  663. he'd be justified

  664. in doing so

  665. how we humans

  666. have messed up

  667. God's good world

  668. it's quite difficult

  669. if you take seriously

  670. the state of the world

  671. at the moment

  672. and the state

  673. of how things are going

  674. it's so difficult

  675. to imagine

  676. the story of our world

  677. ending well

  678. don't you think

  679. in our own day

  680. we find ourselves

  681. in a world

  682. that is busy

  683. at its own destruction

  684. it seems clear

  685. to me

  686. in so many ways

  687. at so many levels

  688. and so many issues

  689. and you say

  690. what hope is there

  691. we're so determined

  692. to destroy ourselves

  693. we're so determined

  694. to abandon God

  695. what hope is there

  696. and as you read

  697. one and two kings

  698. you could very easily

  699. think

  700. that God

  701. had given up

  702. on Israel

  703. look what happened

  704. that story

  705. didn't end well

  706. by the time

  707. you get to the end

  708. of two kings

  709. you could sigh

  710. and say

  711. well what a sad

  712. sad story

  713. it ended

  714. so badly

  715. except for one thing

  716. except for one thing

  717. if you had been

  718. paying careful attention

  719. as you read

  720. the history of Israel

  721. through one and two kings

  722. and I'm hoping

  723. you'll get inspired

  724. to read the story

  725. of one and two kings

  726. all the way through

  727. over the coming weeks

  728. and months

  729. and when you get

  730. to two kings

  731. get in touch with me

  732. and tell me

  733. why it's not all

  734. that depressing

  735. after all

  736. but if you do

  737. read carefully through

  738. you will notice

  739. that there are

  740. some very clear

  741. indications

  742. that God

  743. does not

  744. give up

  745. that's not what

  746. the God

  747. who really is there

  748. is like

  749. he doesn't

  750. give up

  751. yes

  752. the history of Israel

  753. is terrible

  754. and tragic

  755. like the history

  756. of our world

  757. but it is not

  758. hopeless

  759. well friends

  760. I think that's

  761. a good point

  762. at which we

  763. introduce Elisha

  764. can you cope

  765. with just a few

  766. more minutes

  767. yeah

  768. you're not allowed

  769. to say no

  770. are you

  771. you're getting

  772. into trouble

  773. please turn

  774. to one kings

  775. 19

  776. I said we're

  777. only going to

  778. get a quick

  779. glimpse of him

  780. to start with

  781. tonight

  782. I'm going to

  783. leave you

  784. again

  785. you might like

  786. to do this

  787. tonight

  788. before you

  789. go to sleep

  790. if you're

  791. able to stay

  792. awake for long

  793. enough

  794. or tomorrow

  795. morning or

  796. something

  797. to read the

  798. dramatic story

  799. of one kings

  800. 18

  801. the Mount

  802. Carmel story

  803. about Elijah

  804. and his

  805. momentous

  806. confrontation

  807. with the

  808. prophets of

  809. Baal on

  810. Mount Carmel

  811. that was a

  812. moment of

  813. hope

  814. that really

  815. was a

  816. moment of

  817. hope

  818. even King

  819. Ahab

  820. apparently

  821. joined the

  822. people

  823. and at that

  824. moment at

  825. least

  826. no it didn't

  827. last

  828. but at that

  829. moment

  830. they turned

  831. back to the

  832. Lord with

  833. with a bit

  834. of prompting

  835. from Elijah

  836. and the

  837. climax of the

  838. story in

  839. one kings

  840. 18 we

  841. see the

  842. people

  843. falling on

  844. their faces

  845. and crying

  846. out the

  847. Lord he

  848. is God

  849. the Lord

  850. he is

  851. God

  852. that's

  853. chapter 18

  854. verse 39

  855. but that

  856. didn't last

  857. and in

  858. one kings

  859. 19

  860. Queen Jezebel

  861. laughed out

  862. and threatened

  863. to kill

  864. Elijah

  865. again I'll

  866. lead you to

  867. read the

  868. story of

  869. Elijah's

  870. escape

  871. through the

  872. first part

  873. of one

  874. kings

  875. 19

  876. suffice to

  877. say that

  878. Elijah fled

  879. for his

  880. life and

  881. he fled a

  882. long long

  883. long way

  884. south far

  885. out beyond

  886. Jezebel's

  887. reach and

  888. he came to

  889. a mountain

  890. a famous

  891. mountain has

  892. two names

  893. Mount Horeb

  894. or Mount

  895. Sinai same

  896. mountain two

  897. names you

  898. remember the

  899. story of

  900. Mount Sinai

  901. and there at

  902. Mount Sinai

  903. Mount Horeb he

  904. had a remarkable

  905. encounter with

  906. God in

  907. which to cut

  908. long story

  909. short God

  910. told Elijah to

  911. get back to

  912. work because

  913. God had not

  914. given up

  915. God had not

  916. given up on

  917. Israel even

  918. if Elijah

  919. thought he

  920. had and

  921. this is what

  922. God said to

  923. Elijah I'm

  924. picking it up

  925. at chapter

  926. 19 verse 15

  927. the Lord said

  928. to him go

  929. Elijah return

  930. on your way

  931. to the

  932. wilderness of

  933. Damascus and

  934. when you

  935. arrive you

  936. shall anoint

  937. Hazael to

  938. be king over

  939. Syria and

  940. Jehu the

  941. son of

  942. Nimshi

  943. you shall

  944. appoint to

  945. be king

  946. over Israel

  947. and

  948. Elisha

  949. the son

  950. of Shaphat

  951. of Abel

  952. Mahola

  953. you shall

  954. anoint to

  955. be prophet

  956. in your

  957. place

  958. and the

  959. one who

  960. escapes from

  961. the sword

  962. of Hazael

  963. shall Jehu

  964. put to

  965. death and

  966. the one

  967. who escapes

  968. from the

  969. sword of

  970. Jehu

  971. shall

  972. Elisha

  973. put to

  974. death

  975. yet I

  976. will leave

  977. 7,000 in

  978. Israel

  979. all the

  980. knees that

  981. have not

  982. bowed to

  983. Baal

  984. and every

  985. mouth that

  986. has not

  987. kissed him

  988. we're not

  989. going to

  990. pause on

  991. the details

  992. here

  993. just notice

  994. that Elisha

  995. was to be

  996. Elijah's

  997. successor

  998. you will have

  999. noticed and you

  1000. probably noticed

  1001. from Sunday

  1002. school days that

  1003. the names are

  1004. strikingly similar

  1005. Elijah and

  1006. Elisha

  1007. said earlier that

  1008. in Hebrew names

  1009. very often

  1010. almost always

  1011. actually have

  1012. meanings

  1013. the Eli

  1014. bit

  1015. Eli

  1016. and you

  1017. come across

  1018. that E-L-I

  1019. in a number

  1020. of names

  1021. that means

  1022. my God

  1023. L is the

  1024. word for

  1025. God

  1026. the I

  1027. is the

  1028. word for

  1029. my

  1030. my God

  1031. the JAR

  1032. bit in

  1033. Elijah

  1034. is that

  1035. name

  1036. Yahweh

  1037. so my

  1038. God is

  1039. Yahweh

  1040. is Elijah's

  1041. name

  1042. which summed

  1043. up his

  1044. message

  1045. Ahab and

  1046. Jezebel

  1047. their God

  1048. is Baal

  1049. and they

  1050. were confronted

  1051. with a man

  1052. called my

  1053. God is

  1054. Yahweh

  1055. the SHA

  1056. in Elisha

  1057. means

  1058. saves

  1059. so my

  1060. God is

  1061. Yahweh

  1062. is going to

  1063. have a

  1064. successor

  1065. called my

  1066. God

  1067. saves

  1068. see already

  1069. just a little

  1070. bit of a

  1071. hint

  1072. God does

  1073. not give

  1074. up

  1075. my God

  1076. is Yahweh

  1077. my God

  1078. saves

  1079. let's see

  1080. what happened

  1081. when Elijah

  1082. found

  1083. Elisha

  1084. very quickly

  1085. verse 19

  1086. so 1 Kings

    1 Kings 19:19

  1087. 19

  1088. verse 19

  1089. so he

  1090. that's

  1091. Elijah

  1092. I'm reading

  1093. from the ESV

  1094. departed

  1095. from there

  1096. that was

  1097. way down

  1098. south at

  1099. Mount Sinai

  1100. Mount Horeb

  1101. way outside

  1102. the borders

  1103. of Israel

  1104. and he

  1105. found

  1106. Elisha

  1107. the son

  1108. of Shaphat

  1109. he'd gone

  1110. all the way

  1111. back to

  1112. Ahab's

  1113. territory

  1114. in a

  1115. farming

  1116. town

  1117. in the

  1118. Jordan

  1119. Valley

  1120. Elisha

  1121. who was

  1122. ploughing

  1123. with 12

  1124. yoke of

  1125. oxen

  1126. in front

  1127. of him

  1128. and he

  1129. was with

  1130. the 12th

  1131. it sounds

  1132. as though

  1133. Elisha

  1134. was from

  1135. a rather

  1136. well-to-do

  1137. farming

  1138. family

  1139. and Elijah

  1140. passed by

  1141. him and

  1142. cast his

  1143. cloak

  1144. upon him

  1145. this was

  1146. Elijah's

  1147. hairy

  1148. cloak

  1149. it was part

  1150. of his

  1151. rather well-known

  1152. distinctive

  1153. dress

  1154. we'll hear more

  1155. about that

  1156. cloak

  1157. but here

  1158. Elijah threw

  1159. his cloak

  1160. onto the

  1161. unsuspecting

  1162. farm boy

  1163. and Elijah

  1164. said nothing

  1165. but just

  1166. kept walking

  1167. verse 20

  1168. and he

  1169. this is

  1170. Elisha

  1171. left the

  1172. oxen

  1173. and ran

  1174. after Elijah

  1175. and said

  1176. let me kiss

  1177. my father

  1178. and my

  1179. mother

  1180. and then

  1181. I will

  1182. follow you

  1183. he'd got

  1184. the message

  1185. and his

  1186. eagerness

  1187. to follow

  1188. Elijah

  1189. is remarkable

  1190. his request

  1191. to kiss

  1192. his mum

  1193. and dad

  1194. goodbye

  1195. no coronavirus

  1196. in those

  1197. days

  1198. he was

  1199. allowed to

  1200. kiss

  1201. his mum

  1202. and dad

  1203. goodbye

  1204. emphasises

  1205. of course

  1206. his readiness

  1207. to leave

  1208. home

  1209. for who

  1210. knows

  1211. what

  1212. and verse

  1213. 20

  1214. Elijah

  1215. said to

  1216. him

  1217. to

  1218. Elisha

  1219. go back

  1220. again

  1221. for what

  1222. have I

  1223. done

  1224. to you

  1225. it's a

  1226. rather

  1227. strange

  1228. way of

  1229. putting it

  1230. but I

  1231. think he's

  1232. saying

  1233. go and

  1234. say your

  1235. goodbyes

  1236. but don't

  1237. forget

  1238. what I've

  1239. just done

  1240. to you

  1241. which you've

  1242. understood

  1243. you've got

  1244. it's

  1245. significance

  1246. verse 21

  1247. and he

  1248. Elisha

  1249. returned

  1250. from following

  1251. him

  1252. and took

  1253. the yoke

  1254. of oxen

  1255. and sacrificed

  1256. them

  1257. and boiled

  1258. their flesh

  1259. with the

  1260. yokes

  1261. of the

  1262. oxen

  1263. and gave

  1264. it to the

  1265. people

  1266. and they

  1267. ate

  1268. and then

  1269. he arose

  1270. and went

  1271. after Elijah

  1272. and assisted

  1273. him

  1274. try and imagine

  1275. the scene

  1276. it's described

  1277. very briefly

  1278. but we mustn't

  1279. miss what was

  1280. happening

  1281. Elisha

  1282. was putting

  1283. on a

  1284. farewell

  1285. party

  1286. for the

  1287. people of

  1288. his

  1289. community

  1290. and they

  1291. ate

  1292. the

  1293. oxen

  1294. there

  1295. would

  1296. be no

  1297. going

  1298. back

  1299. to the

  1300. ploughing

  1301. you see

  1302. you could

  1303. call this

  1304. a decisive

  1305. break

  1306. with his

  1307. former

  1308. life

  1309. don't you

  1310. think

  1311. Elisha

  1312. left

  1313. everything

  1314. he had

  1315. known

  1316. to follow

  1317. Elijah

  1318. and to

  1319. be his

  1320. off-sider

  1321. and we

  1322. know

  1323. from what

  1324. we read

  1325. a few

  1326. lines

  1327. earlier

  1328. that

  1329. Elisha

  1330. will

  1331. become

  1332. Elijah's

  1333. successor

  1334. there was

  1335. something

  1336. here

  1337. more

  1338. important

  1339. than

  1340. the

  1341. farm

  1342. there

  1343. was

  1344. something

  1345. here

  1346. for

  1347. Elisha

  1348. more

  1349. important

  1350. than

  1351. the

  1352. family

  1353. there

  1354. was

  1355. something

  1356. here

  1357. more

  1358. important

  1359. than

  1360. the

  1361. community

  1362. Elisha

  1363. left

  1364. everything

  1365. he had

  1366. known

  1367. to

  1368. follow

  1369. Elijah

  1370. finish

  1371. off

  1372. with two

  1373. points

  1374. first

  1375. if

  1376. we'd

  1377. been

  1378. reading

  1379. the

  1380. whole

  1381. history

  1382. and

  1383. we'd

  1384. been

  1385. starting

  1386. to

  1387. get

  1388. a bit

  1389. depressed

  1390. about

  1391. how

  1392. things

  1393. were

  1394. going

  1395. to

  1396. end

  1397. in

  1398. Israel

  1399. as

  1400. Elijah

  1401. had

  1402. indeed

  1403. been

  1404. a little

  1405. bit

  1406. earlier

  1407. can

  1408. you

  1409. see

  1410. how

  1411. the

  1412. call

  1413. of

  1414. Elisha

  1415. is

  1416. a

  1417. pretty

  1418. sure

  1419. sign

  1420. that

  1421. God

  1422. had

  1423. not

  1424. given

  1425. up

  1426. God

  1427. was

  1428. still

  1429. dealing

  1430. with

  1431. Israel

  1432. God's

  1433. word

  1434. would

  1435. still

  1436. come

  1437. to

  1438. Israel

  1439. God

  1440. was

  1441. still

  1442. God

  1443. in

  1444. Israel

  1445. my

  1446. God

  1447. saves

  1448. will

  1449. succeed

  1450. my

  1451. God

  1452. is

  1453. Yahweh

  1454. and

  1455. with

  1456. Elisha

  1457. leaving

  1458. everything

  1459. for

  1460. who knows

  1461. what

  1462. don't

  1463. you get

  1464. the

  1465. impression

  1466. that

  1467. whatever

  1468. this

  1469. is

  1470. about

  1471. it

  1472. was

  1473. more

  1474. important

  1475. than

  1476. anything

  1477. it

  1478. sort

  1479. of

  1480. symbolically

  1481. represented

  1482. to us

  1483. in

  1484. Elisha

  1485. walking

  1486. away

  1487. from

  1488. everything

  1489. he'd

  1490. known

  1491. in

  1492. life

  1493. to

  1494. follow

  1495. Elijah

  1496. there

  1497. is

  1498. something

  1499. very

  1500. very

  1501. important

  1502. going

  1503. on

  1504. now

  1505. we

  1506. will

  1507. follow

  1508. Elisha

  1509. and

  1510. see

  1511. a little

  1512. bit

  1513. of

  1514. what

  1515. happens

  1516. but

  1517. at

  1518. this

  1519. early

  1520. stage

  1521. we

  1522. can

  1523. see

  1524. that

  1525. it

  1526. will

  1527. be

  1528. very

  1529. important

  1530. if

  1531. you

  1532. want

  1533. to

  1534. know

  1535. and

  1536. you

  1537. want

  1538. to

  1539. see

  1540. how

  1541. God

  1542. had

  1543. not

  1544. given

  1545. up

  1546. on

  1547. Israel

  1548. watch

  1549. Elisha

  1550. second

  1551. many years

  1552. later

  1553. there was

  1554. a similar

  1555. scene

  1556. listen to

  1557. this

  1558. account

  1559. of it

  1560. from

  1561. Matthew

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  1562. chapter

  1563. 4

  1564. I

  1565. think

  1566. the

  1567. reference

  1568. is

  1569. on

  1570. your

  1571. notes

  1572. while

  1573. walking

  1574. by the

  1575. sea

  1576. of

  1577. Galilee

  1578. Jesus

  1579. saw

  1580. two

  1581. brothers

  1582. Simon

  1583. who is

  1584. called

  1585. Peter

  1586. and

  1587. Andrew

  1588. his

  1589. brother

  1590. casting

  1591. a net

  1592. into

  1593. the

  1594. sea

  1595. for

  1596. they

  1597. were

  1598. fishermen

  1599. and

  1600. he

  1601. said

  1602. to

  1603. them

  1604. follow

  1605. me

  1606. and

  1607. I

  1608. will

  1609. make

  1610. you

  1611. fishers

  1612. of

  1613. men

  1614. and

  1615. immediately

  1616. they

  1617. left

  1618. their

  1619. nets

  1620. and

  1621. followed

  1622. him

  1623. and

  1624. going

  1625. on

  1626. from

  1627. there

  1628. he

  1629. saw

  1630. two

  1631. other

  1632. brothers

  1633. James

  1634. the

  1635. son

  1636. of

  1637. Zebedee

  1638. and

  1639. John

  1640. his

  1641. brother

  1642. in the

  1643. boat

  1644. with

  1645. Zebedee

  1646. their

  1647. father

  1648. mending

  1649. their

  1650. nets

  1651. and

  1652. he

  1653. called

  1654. them

  1655. and

  1656. immediately

  1657. they

  1658. left

  1659. their

  1660. boat

  1661. and

  1662. their

  1663. father

  1664. and

  1665. followed

  1666. him

  1667. and

  1668. this

  1669. friends

  1670. is the

  1671. first

  1672. of a

  1673. number

  1674. of

  1675. places

  1676. where

  1677. we're

  1678. going

  1679. to see

  1680. similarities

  1681. between

  1682. the

  1683. life

  1684. of

  1685. Elisha

  1686. and

  1687. the

  1688. story

  1689. of

  1690. Jesus

  1691. in

  1692. the

  1693. New

  1694. Testament

  1695. Gospels

  1696. in

  1697. this

  1698. case

  1699. Jesus

  1700. was

  1701. acting

  1702. rather

  1703. like

  1704. Elijah

  1705. he

  1706. called

  1707. Peter

  1708. and

  1709. Andrew

  1710. and

  1711. James

  1712. and

  1713. John

  1714. in

  1715. a way

  1716. that

  1717. reminds

  1718. us

  1719. of

  1720. Elijah

  1721. calling

  1722. Elisha

  1723. and

  1724. here

  1725. I

  1726. just

  1727. want

  1728. to

  1729. suggest

  1730. that

  1731. the

  1732. parallel

  1733. might

  1734. get

  1735. us

  1736. thinking

  1737. Peter

  1738. Andrew

  1739. James

  1740. and

  1741. John

  1742. left

  1743. everything

  1744. they

  1745. had

  1746. known

  1747. to

  1748. follow

  1749. Jesus

  1750. this

  1751. time

  1752. it

  1753. was

  1754. fishing

  1755. nets

  1756. instead

  1757. of

  1758. oxen

  1759. they

  1760. left

  1761. their

  1762. father

  1763. but

  1764. it's

  1765. a

  1766. picture

  1767. worth

  1768. taking

  1769. in

  1770. something

  1771. important

  1772. was

  1773. happening

  1774. and

  1775. if

  1776. you

  1777. like

  1778. me

  1779. are

  1780. getting

  1781. depressed

  1782. about

  1783. how

  1784. things

  1785. are

  1786. going

  1787. in

  1788. the

  1789. world

  1790. look

  1791. at

  1792. Jesus

  1793. and

  1794. the

  1795. call

  1796. of

  1797. these

  1798. disciples

  1799. God

  1800. has

  1801. not

  1802. given

  1803. up

  1804. on

  1805. his

  1806. world

  1807. what

  1808. these

  1809. men

  1810. left

  1811. everything

  1812. for

  1813. is

  1814. more

  1815. important

  1816. than

  1817. anything

  1818. God

  1819. has

  1820. not

  1821. given

  1822. up

  1823. on

  1824. his

  1825. world

  1826. just

  1827. as

  1828. he

  1829. had

  1830. not

  1831. given

  1832. up

  1833. on

  1834. Israel

  1835. and

  1836. if

  1837. we

  1838. want

  1839. to

  1840. see

  1841. how

  1842. God

  1843. has

  1844. not

  1845. given

  1846. up

  1847. on

  1848. the

  1849. world

  1850. we've

  1851. got

  1852. to

  1853. watch

  1854. Jesus

  1855. and

  1856. his

  1857. disciples

  1858. in

  1859. an

  1860. important

  1861. way

  1862. in

  1863. Jesus

  1864. God

  1865. was

  1866. doing

  1867. again

  1868. something

  1869. that

  1870. he'd

  1871. done

  1872. before

  1873. in

  1874. Elisha

  1875. just

  1876. go back

  1877. to

  1878. Elisha

  1879. for one

  1880. final

  1881. moment

  1882. in the

  1883. pages

  1884. that

  1885. follow

  1886. 1

  1887. Kings

  1888. 19

  1889. right

  1890. through

  1891. to

  1892. the

  1893. end

  1894. of

  1895. the

  1896. book

  1897. of

  1898. 1

  1899. Kings

  1900. there

  1901. are

  1902. some

  1903. pretty

  1904. exciting

  1905. stories

  1906. involving

  1907. Elijah

  1908. and

  1909. King

  1910. Ahab

  1911. Elisha

  1912. is

  1913. not

  1914. mentioned

  1915. again

  1916. in

  1917. the

  1918. rest

  1919. of

  1920. 1

  1921. Kings

  1922. but

  1923. we

  1924. can

  1925. assume

  1926. that

  1927. he

  1928. was

  1929. there

  1930. he

  1931. was

  1932. Elijah's

  1933. assistant

  1934. the

  1935. next

  1936. time

  1937. we

  1938. hear

  1939. of

  1940. Elisha

  1941. is

  1942. at

  1943. the

  1944. beginning

  1945. of

  1946. 2

    2 Kings 2 chapter mention

  1947. Kings

  1948. chapter

  1949. 2

  1950. where

  1951. Elijah's

  1952. time

  1953. on

  1954. earth

  1955. was

  1956. coming

  1957. to

  1958. an

  1959. end

  1960. and

  1961. the

  1962. time

  1963. for

  1964. Elisha

  1965. to

  1966. fill

  1967. Elijah's

  1968. shoes

  1969. so to

  1970. speak

  1971. or

  1972. actually

  1973. to fill

  1974. his

  1975. cloak

  1976. is

  1977. what

  1978. he

  1979. did

  1980. had

  1981. come

  1982. now

  1983. we

  1984. are

  1985. going

  1986. to

  1987. take

  1988. up

  1989. Elijah's

  1990. story

  1991. at

  1992. that

  1993. point

  1994. next

  1995. time

  1996. would

  1997. you

  1998. join

  1999. me

  2000. as

  2001. we

  2002. just

  2003. pray

  2004. to

  2005. conclude

  2006. now

  2007. dear

  2008. God

  2009. and

  2010. Heavenly

  2011. Father

  2012. we

  2013. thank

  2014. you

  2015. for

  2016. these

  2017. great

  2018. figures

  2019. of

  2020. the

  2021. past

  2022. we

  2023. thank

  2024. you

  2025. for

  2026. the

  2027. way

  2028. in

  2029. which

  2046. us

  2047. for

  2048. the

  2049. coming

  2050. of

  2051. Jesus

  2052. and

  2056. insights

  2057. into

  2058. and

  2060. and

  2061. ways

  2062. of

  2063. understanding

  2064. the

  2066. grace

  2067. that you

  2068. have

  2069. shown

  2070. us

  2071. in

  2072. Jesus

  2084. truth

  2085. that you

  2086. do not

  2087. give up

  2088. you

  2089. do not

  2124. to

  2125. embrace

  2126. that

  2127. truth

  2128. and

  2129. understand

  2130. it

  2131. just

  2132. a

  2133. little

  2134. bit

  2135. so

  2136. that we

  2137. can be

  2138. filled

  2139. with

  2140. hope

  2141. hope

  2142. in

  2143. the

  2144. God

  2145. who

  2146. does

  2147. not

  2148. give

  2149. up
