  1. John 21.

  2. Give me a moment just to find it.

  3. I'm reading the ESV version.

  4. After this, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples

  5. by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way.

  6. Simon Peter, Thomas, called the twin, Nathaniel of Cana in Galilee,

  7. the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together.

  8. Simon Peter said to them, I'm going fishing.

  9. They said to him, we will go with you.

  10. They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

  11. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore,

  12. yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.

  13. Jesus said to them, children, do you have any fish?

  14. They answered him, no.

  15. He said to them, cast the net on the right side of the boat,

  16. and you will find some.

  17. So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in

  18. because of the quantity of fish.

  19. That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, it is the Lord.

  20. When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment,

  21. for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea.

  22. The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish,

  23. for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.

  24. When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place,

  25. with fish laid out on it and bread.

  26. Jesus said to them, bring some of the fish that you have just caught.

  27. So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore,

  28. full of large fish, 153 of them.

  29. And although there were so many, the net was not torn.

  30. Jesus said to them, come and have breakfast.

  31. Now none of the disciples dared ask him, who are you?

  32. They knew it was the Lord.

  33. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them,

  34. and so with the fish.

  35. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples

  36. after he was raised from the dead.

  37. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  38. Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?

  39. He said to him, yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

  40. He said to him, feed my lambs.

  41. He said to him a second time, Simon, son of John, do you love me?

  42. He said to him, yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

  43. He said to him, tend my sheep.

  44. He said to him the third time, Simon, son of John, do you love me?

  45. Peter was grieved because he had said to him the third time,

  46. do you love me?

  47. And he said to him, Lord, you know everything.

  48. You know that I love you.

  49. Jesus said to him, feed my sheep.

  50. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young,

  51. you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted.

  52. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands

  53. and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.

  54. This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.

  55. And after saying this, he said to him, follow me.

  56. Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them.

  57. The one who had been reclining at table close to him and had said,

  58. Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?

  59. When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, Lord, what about this man?

  60. Jesus said to him, if it is my will that he remain until I come,

  61. what is that to you?

  62. You follow me.

  63. So the saying spread abroad among the brothers that this disciple was not to die.

  64. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die.

  65. But if it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?

  66. This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things and who has written these things.

  67. And we know that his testimony is true.

  68. Now, there are also many other things that Jesus did.

  69. Were every one of them to be written,

  70. I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

  71. So,

  72. sorry everyone.

  73. I was working between two computers there and two screens.

  74. So,

  75. I just needed to,

  76. I thought I was going to be unmuted from the center.

  77. Sorry about that.

  78. Okay,

  79. I was just saying to Rachel that I was really glad she played that song because it's also a favorite of mine.

  80. Many of the time I've sat on top of a hill.

  81. We have a big storm rolling in and that's the song that comes to mind.

  82. This morning we're going to look at the first part of John chapter 21.

    John 21 chapter mention

  83. We decided to break it into two parts.

  84. There's just a fair bit in it.

  85. So,

  86. we're just mainly concentrating on the first 14 verses today.

  87. They say it's impossible to improve on perfection.

  88. Well,

  89. John seems to have achieved perfection in his biography of the life of Jesus.

  90. He has carefully and thoughtfully led us through the three-year story of Jesus.

  91. He's presented detailed evidence of what Jesus claimed about himself and the miraculous things that Jesus did to back up his claims.

  92. John shocked us with the terrible injustice and tragedy of Jesus' crucifixion, his death and his burial.

  93. Then he confronts us with the outrageous proposition that Jesus come back from the dead.

  94. He describes incidents where individuals and groups actually meet the resurrected Lord, the resurrected Jesus,

  95. and we're prompted to say,

  96. I or we have seen the Lord.

  97. And finally,

  98. Thomas,

  99. the ultimate skeptic,

  100. as we saw last week,

  101. is compelled by the sheer will of hard evidence to respond to Jesus in words of worship,

  102. my Lord and my God.

  103. And with that,

  104. John's superbly worded conclusion seems to bring us to a point of perfection.

  105. The conclusion,

  106. verse 30,

  107. 20,

  108. 30 and 31 seems to be perfection itself.

  109. Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples,

  110. which are not written in this book.

  111. But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ,

  112. the Son of God,

  113. and that by believing,

  114. you may have life in his name.

  115. What more could be added?

  116. What more could be gained?

  117. His case has been perfectly presented.

  118. Yet,

  119. we have chapter 21.

  120. John.

  121. And chapter 21,

  122. therefore,

  123. presents a bit of a textural challenge,

  124. which we need to address first up.

  125. And basically,

  126. the question is,

  127. how does chapter 21 fit into John's biography?

  128. At first glance,

  129. it seemed so,

  130. it seems so ordinary compared to chapter 20.

  131. And that's led some to conclude that chapter 21 is a much later addition by someone other than John.

  132. But that seems unlikely because no manuscripts of John's gospel have been found without chapter 21.

  133. And the style and the vocabulary of chapter 21 fit easily with the rest of the gospel.

  134. And verse 24 and 25 don't have to be problematic.

  135. It appears quite simply that John has a bunch of people behind the scenes whom he chooses to leave unnamed,

  136. but who are qualified particularly both to authenticate John as an eyewitness of everything written in his biography,

  137. and also to authenticate him as a competent historian and writer who has carefully and fairly selected from a vast quantity of material

  138. as he presents his case for Christ beyond reasonable doubt.

  139. So it's far more accurate to think of chapter 24 as the epilogue,

  140. just as chapter 1 is the prologue.

  141. And together,

  142. the opening and closing chapters become massive bookends,

  143. highlighting the two great pillars of the gospel,

  144. the incarnation and the resurrection of Jesus.

  145. And many times in this series,

  146. I've suggested that John's biography is presented like a courtroom trial.

  147. And I've sent through with the email,

  148. the bulletin email this week,

  149. a summary diagram.

  150. So you could check out the detail of that.

  151. The prologue is the opening statement for the prosecution in terms of a courtroom trial.

  152. And that's where he makes clear what he intends to argue.

  153. And then chapters 22 through to 20 is the hard evidence to back up his claims.

  154. And finally,

  155. at chapter 21 is the epilogue,

  156. his closing statement,

  157. which pulls the whole case together practically.

  158. And the bookends themselves are tied together with a very significant word for John,

  159. the word revealed,

  160. which means manifested in the Greek,

  161. which means to show something as it really is.

  162. If you look back to John chapter one,

  163. verse 31,

  164. John the Baptist was very much aware that his purpose was simply that Jesus would be manifested.

  165. John chapter one,

  166. verse 31,

  167. John says,

  168. I myself did not know him,

  169. but for this purpose,

  170. I came baptizing with water that he might be revealed or manifested to Israel.

  171. So John's biography begins with him,

  172. with Jesus manifested as the pre-incarnate,

  173. pre-existent word of God,

  174. the creator and sustainer of everything in this world,

  175. the one who shows and displays God's glory like no other.

  176. He's manifested as God's Messiah,

  177. God's King and Savior,

  178. taking on flesh or humanness to bring salvation to our world,

  179. to bring new relationship with God and build a new community of true Israelites,

  180. people who would gladly worship,

  181. honor,

  182. and obey the Lord.

  183. So the biography begins as a supernatural,

  184. miraculous,

  185. incredible story.

  186. And John's biography concludes with the post-resurrection Jesus manifesting himself.

  187. Look at chapter 21,

  188. verse one,

  189. twice in this verse,

  190. that word used.

  191. After this,

  192. Jesus manifested himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias.

  193. And he manifested himself in this way.

  194. And again,

  195. verse 14,

  196. this was now the third time that Jesus was manifested to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

  197. High emphasis.

  198. What's happening here?

  199. Why the emphasis?

  200. Well,

  201. I think it goes something like this.

  202. Having demonstrated his love for and commitment to saving his people in his death,

  203. he now wants his saved people to be totally committed to him as the resurrection man,

  204. properly understanding the significance of his resurrection,

  205. and living with resurrection delight and purpose.

  206. In other words,

  207. Jesus wants his people to understand that the resurrection changes everything,

  208. not just for Jesus,

  209. but for them.

  210. And here in these verses,

  211. Jesus continues to manifest as truly and completely God.

  212. In the story here,

  213. he just turns up where he wants.

  214. He's concerned with the physical needs of those he loves.

  215. And it's interesting that this fishing story is not presented like other miracles in John's record.

  216. This is just really Jesus being Jesus,

  217. providing for his people from his limitless power and his endless compassion.

  218. Here,

  219. in these verses,

  220. Jesus,

  221. as God's King and Savior,

  222. initiates fellowship with his own,

  223. another familiar phrase from John's gospel,

  224. his own who have believed and received life.

  225. Interestingly,

  226. these guys were off fishing.

  227. They weren't seeking Jesus,

  228. but he pursued them,

  229. determined to bring them to full understanding of his glory,

  230. as the resurrection man,

  231. and bring them to full engagement in resurrection life.

  232. And here,

  233. as I've said before,

  234. Jesus manifests himself as truly and completely human.

  235. There's real emphasis in the chapter 20 and 21 on the real bodily resurrection of Jesus.

  236. He's not hallucination.

  237. He's not some disembodied spirit,

  238. hovering.

  239. He continues to be completely human after his resurrection.

  240. A real body,

  241. real puncture marks,

  242. real hunger for a real breakfast of bread and grilled fish,

  243. real conversation,

  244. in a moment,

  245. a real moment of time.

  246. Now again,

  247. the question is,

  248. why such emphasis on bodily,

  249. physical resurrection?

  250. Well,

  251. very simply,

  252. it's because it's essential to salvation.

  253. So it goes something like this.

  254. One obvious consequence of sin was physical death.

  255. When Jesus fully paid the penalty for sin in his death,

  256. the consequence no longer applied.

  257. Hence,

  258. coming back from death in bodily resurrection.

  259. And even more amazing,

  260. what we see here in chapter 21 is that the resurrection man will take flesh with him forever into heaven.

  261. That is just mind boggling.

  262. And it provides great hope,

  263. confidence,

  264. and reassurance for us.

  265. Jesus is our trailblazer.

  266. What he gets,

  267. we get.

  268. That is bodily resurrection,

  269. to be with the Lord in heaven forever.

  270. So,

  271. as John's biography of Jesus begins,

  272. so it ends.

  273. A supernatural,

  274. miraculous,

  275. incredible story.

  276. Friends,

  277. Arthur Pink writes,

  278. and we'll be looking at this in the breakout groups,

  279. Arthur Pink writes this,

  280. we cannot make too much of the death of Christ,

  281. but we can make too little of his resurrection.

  282. Our hearts and minds cannot meditate too frequently on the cross,

  283. but in pondering the sufferings of the Savior,

  284. let us not forget the glories which followed.

  285. Calvary does not exhaust the gospel message.

  286. End of quotation.

  287. Chapter 21 shows that Jesus has more to teach,

  288. and his disciples have more to learn.

  289. So,

  290. in the remaining time,

  291. let's look at what the teaching focus of these first 14 verses is.

  292. The teaching focus is that fellowship is the goal of salvation.

  293. Now,

  294. the incident begins with seven disciples,

  295. all fishermen by trade,

  296. but now bonded at another level in their common experience of the resurrection man,

  297. Jesus.

  298. All now believed that he was alive.

  299. But apart from this,

  300. it appears that they have no sense,

  301. no new sense of identity and purpose in life as a consequence of Jesus' resurrection.

  302. So we find them here in this story,

  303. they simply went back to what was familiar,

  304. fishing.

  305. Now,

  306. it's really important to note here that evidence was super important for their belief to that particular point.

  307. They all believed that Jesus had come back from the dead.

  308. But here's the problem.

  309. They needed a deeper work in their hearts to see the implication of Jesus' resurrection.

  310. In a previous encounter that Dave took us through last week in chapter 20, verse 21,

  311. Jesus,

  312. when he turned up in the middle and said,

  313. peace be with you.

  314. Now,

  315. that word peace is also the word for rest.

  316. And the word for rest was a feature of Genesis 1,

  317. the end point in God's creation.

  318. And rest was the enjoyment of relationship between God and his image bearers in the context of whole of life worship,

  319. glad obedience and delight in God.

  320. Sin stole rest away,

  321. stole that peace or rest,

  322. leaving God's people at odds with God,

  323. leaving God's people restless as they search for meaning and purpose and satisfaction in places and things other than God.

  324. And here in this story,

  325. after the resurrection,

  326. we see Jesus demonstrating what it looks like to belong to resurrection,

  327. resurrection man's new community.

  328. Jesus is committed to pursuing them

  329. so that they might have full enjoyment of new life in relationship with him.

  330. That he might,

  331. they might enjoy rest

  332. and know God's rest.

  333. Here in these verses,

  334. we see Jesus providing his hungry,

  335. tired,

  336. defeated disciples with breakfast.

  337. And in this action,

  338. reminding them

  339. that he is both the source of their life

  340. and the provider of their every need.

  341. Now,

  342. you remember,

  343. Jesus had taught them visually months earlier,

  344. as part of his ministry through the feeding of the 5,000.

  345. He had taught them that very lesson,

  346. that he was the source of the life

  347. and the provider of their every need.

  348. Only two weeks earlier,

  349. he had reinforced that same lesson

  350. as they ate and drank together on the night he was killed.

  351. You remember,

  352. that whole section was about their hearts being deeply troubled.

  353. They were confused.

  354. But fellowship with Jesus

  355. assured them

  356. that everything was going to plan

  357. according to King Jesus.

  358. It gave them hope of true life

  359. beyond his death.

  360. Jesus shows

  361. that believing

  362. in him,

  363. and he shows it here,

  364. that believing in him

  365. as the resurrection man

  366. means living

  367. under his lordship

  368. at every point in life,

  369. recognizing that daily needs

  370. are his ongoing concern.

  371. And it's quite interesting

  372. the interchanging

  373. between Jesus and the disciples

  374. at the end of the fishing trip.

  375. Tired and dejected

  376. after a long night

  377. without catching a single fish.

  378. Remember,

  379. this is their competence

  380. as fishermen

  381. being exposed now.

  382. Jesus asked them a question.

  383. It was a very colloquial,

  384. friendly question.

  385. Hey guys,

  386. catch any fish?

  387. And his question

  388. immediately forces them

  389. to admit their inability

  390. to provide for themselves.

  391. Then he commands them

  392. to let their net down

  393. on the other side of the boat.

  394. His command

  395. asked them

  396. to trust his ability

  397. and competence

  398. for the basics of life.

  399. And then,

  400. of course,

  401. we know the consequence

  402. of obedience and trust

  403. was huge blessing

  404. in that miraculous catch of fish.

  405. And that leaves,

  406. verse 12,

  407. that leaves the disciples

  408. once again

  409. with their heads spinning.

  410. They know dearly well

  411. it's Jesus.

  412. Just as they're coming

  413. to terms with Jesus

  414. as the resurrection man,

  415. suddenly there's a new challenge,

  416. a new challenge

  417. to engage personally

  418. with Jesus,

  419. to live under his lordship

  420. at every point

  421. to be in fellowship

  422. with him

  423. as the ultimate purpose

  424. of his death

  425. and resurrection.

  426. And finally,

  427. in these verses,

  428. I think here we see

  429. Jesus confirming

  430. his key promise

  431. of his ministry,

  432. which was that

  433. his own will come to him,

  434. believe in him,

  435. and receive abundant life.

  436. The life of unimaginably

  437. huge blessing,

  438. which they saw

  439. before their very eyes

  440. in a very limited way,

  441. 153 large fish.

  442. Now,

  443. how does that come out?

  444. Well,

  445. I actually believe

  446. that John

  447. names this group

  448. in these first verses

  449. very deliberately

  450. and it's part of his point.

  451. Now,

  452. the fact that

  453. Nathaniel's mentioned here

  454. immediately throws us

  455. back to chapter one.

  456. That's the only other time

  457. that Nathaniel is mentioned

  458. in the whole biography.

  459. Now,

  460. there's two unnamed

  461. disciples here

  462. and if we assume

  463. for a moment

  464. that they are

  465. Andrew and Philip,

  466. then what we have

  467. is a very significant

  468. group of disciples

  469. taking us right back

  470. to the start

  471. of Jesus' ministry.

  472. In fact,

  473. all those first invited

  474. into fellowship

  475. with Jesus

  476. at the start

  477. of his ministry

  478. are here now

  479. with the resurrection man,

  480. Jesus.

  481. Not only that,

  482. but it includes Peter

  483. who denied

  484. and abandoned Jesus

  485. and Thomas

  486. who just outright

  487. refused to believe

  488. initially.

  489. And here's the point.

  490. Jesus is demonstrating here,

  491. manifesting himself

  492. as truly God,

  493. truly Savior,

  494. truly King.

  495. None have been lost

  496. as he promised.

  497. For all their failure,

  498. for all their lack

  499. of understanding,

  500. they had been brought

  501. to belief

  502. and now

  503. we're experiencing

  504. peace,

  505. rest,

  506. and fellowship

  507. with the Lord Jesus.

  508. Friends,

  509. as I wrap up

  510. my time here,

  511. the resurrection man

  512. is incredibly

  513. strong

  514. in terms of evidence.

  515. The resurrection man

  516. is proof,

  517. proof of so many things.

  518. Firstly,

  519. he's proof

  520. that the gospel

  521. is real

  522. and that it works

  523. to change people.

  524. Why?

  525. Because Jesus

  526. perseveres

  527. and changes

  528. people's hearts

  529. and renews

  530. their desires

  531. and ability

  532. to love

  533. and serve him

  534. through the Holy Spirit

  535. within them.

  536. We're seeing this process

  537. happening

  538. in these particular

  539. disciples.

  540. Jesus has more

  541. to teach

  542. and they've got

  543. more to learn.

  544. And guess what?

  545. Verse 12 again,

  546. the more they learn,

  547. the more their categories

  548. have to change

  549. because Jesus

  550. is just bigger

  551. than they could ever imagine.

  552. His grace

  553. is bigger

  554. than they could ever have thought.

  555. The gospel

  556. is also about

  557. grace

  558. creating a new community

  559. of fellowship

  560. and worship.

  561. So here's the rub

  562. for you and me

  563. very, very practically.

  564. It's never enough

  565. simply to believe

  566. that Jesus

  567. rose from the dead.

  568. It's never enough

  569. simply to believe

  570. those basic facts

  571. that come out

  572. of the hard evidence.

  573. It's true

  574. but it's never enough.

  575. You need to respond

  576. and pursue fellowship

  577. with the resurrection man,

  578. Jesus,

  579. living every aspect

  580. of life

  581. under his lordship.

  582. See,

  583. it's not a proper

  584. gospel response

  585. to focus

  586. on your forgiveness,

  587. true as that might be,

  588. through the death

  589. of Jesus.

  590. Without also focusing

  591. on what it looks like

  592. and what it means

  593. to live

  594. authentically

  595. in the resurrection

  596. community.

  597. Drawn into fellowship

  598. with Jesus,

  599. drawn into worship

  600. of him

  601. in every part

  602. of your day,

  603. every day

  604. of your life.

  605. And of course,

  606. here's where we push up

  607. against our sinful hearts

  608. again.

  609. Because our sinful hearts

  610. would push us

  611. to make Jesus' death

  612. a sort of personal

  613. get out of jail

  614. free insurance policy.

  615. I can relax now.

  616. My sins are all forgiven.

  617. I'm bound for heaven.

  618. And we can take

  619. that line

  620. on Jesus' death

  621. while quietly

  622. wanting to maintain

  623. our own autonomy.

  624. Quietly refusing

  625. to live

  626. under his lordship.

  627. In other words,

  628. we just want

  629. enough of Jesus

  630. to make us

  631. uncomfortable.

  632. That's right.

  633. We just want

  634. enough of Jesus

  635. that leaves us

  636. being comfortable.

  637. We don't want

  638. Jesus to make us

  639. uncomfortable

  640. as he claims

  641. every aspect

  642. of our lives

  643. under his lordship.

  644. So,

  645. in a very real way,

  646. chapter 21

  647. is the end

  648. of the beginning.

  649. true gospel response

  650. means

  651. new resurrection

  652. community.

  653. It means

  654. new community

  655. identification.

  656. It means

  657. fellowship

  658. or living

  659. under the lordship

  660. of Christ.

  661. Next week,

  662. we'll see

  663. something more

  664. of how

  665. chapter 21

  666. is also

  667. the beginning

  668. of the end

  669. in verses 15

  670. through to 23.

  671. And that

  672. we'll see then

  673. how the resurrection

  674. man shapes

  675. his resurrection

  676. community

  677. for mission.

  678. Because

  679. fellowship

  680. with the lord

  681. Jesus

  682. is never

  683. something

  684. that can

  685. be contained.

  686. Resurrection

  687. man

  688. is

  689. incomparable.

  690. Resurrection

  691. man

  692. is unstoppable.

  693. His mission

  694. continues

  695. to provide

  696. fellowship

  697. in the four

  698. corners of our

  699. world.

  700. God

  701. so tune

  702. in next

  703. week

  704. for verses

  705. 15 to 23.

  706. In the meantime,

  707. just join with me

  708. as I pray now.

  709. Lord,

  710. we thank you

  711. for the complexity

  712. of the written

  713. record which we

  714. have,

  715. which is

  716. John's gospel.

  717. We thank you,

  718. Lord,

  719. for questions

  720. arise

  721. that cause us

  722. to dig

  723. into it

  724. and think

  725. deeply about it.

  726. We thank you,

  727. Lord,

  728. for the fact

  729. that Jesus

  730. has

  731. much to teach

  732. us

  733. and we have

  734. much to learn.

  735. We pray,

  736. Lord,

  737. that we might

  738. be willing

  739. to learn.

  740. We pray,

  741. Lord,

  742. that we might

  743. not have

  744. half a gospel

  745. or a truncated

  746. gospel,

  747. a gospel,

  748. Lord,

  749. that we

  750. mould to

  751. our own

  752. suitability.

  753. Help us,

  754. Lord,

  755. not to think

  756. of Jesus

  757. as the one

  758. who forgives

  759. our sins

  760. without also

  761. being the Lord

  762. who claims

  763. our allegiance

  764. and our loyalty

  765. to him

  766. at every point

  767. in life.

  768. Help us,

  769. Lord,

  770. to look this

  771. week

  772. and reflect

  773. again

  774. on which

  775. parts of our

  776. lives

  777. we want to

  778. keep under

  779. our own

  780. Lordship

  781. and which

  782. parts of life

  783. therefore we

  784. need to hand

  785. over to the

  786. Lordship of

  787. Jesus.

  788. And I pray

  789. you might help

  790. us do that

  791. in Jesus' name.

  792. Amen.

  793. Thank you very much.
