  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. Good morning.

  3. We're going to read from Ruth, Chapter 3.

    Ruth 3 chapter mention

  4. Then Naomi, her mother-in-law, said to her,

  5. My daughter, should I not seek rest for you, that it may be well with you?

  6. Is not Boaz our relative, with whose young women you were?

  7. See, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor.

  8. Wash, therefore, and anoint yourself, and put on your cloak

  9. and go down to the threshing floor,

  10. but do not make yourself known to the man

  11. until he has finished eating and drinking.

  12. But when he lies down, observe the place where he lies.

  13. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down,

  14. and he will tell you what to do.

  15. And she replied, All that you say I will do.

  16. So she went down to the threshing floor

  17. and did just as her mother-in-law had commanded her.

  18. And when Boaz had eaten and drunk,

  19. and his heart was merry,

  20. he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain.

  21. Then she came softly and uncovered his feet and lay down.

  22. At midnight, the man was startled and turned over,

  23. and behold, a woman lay at his feet.

  24. He said, Who are you?

  25. And she answered, I am Ruth, your servant.

  26. Spread your wings over your servant,

  27. for you are a redeemer.

  28. And he said, May you be blessed by the Lord, my daughter.

  29. You have made this last kindness greater than the first,

  30. in that you have not gone after young men,

  31. whether poor or rich.

  32. And now, my daughter, do not fear.

  33. I will do for you all that you ask,

  34. for all my fellow townsmen know that you are a worthy woman.

  35. And now it is true that I am a redeemer,

  36. yet there is a redeemer nearer than I.

  37. Remain tonight, and in the morning,

  38. if he will redeem you, good, let him do it.

  39. But if he is not willing to redeem you,

  40. then, as the Lord lives, I will redeem you.

  41. Lie down until the morning.

  42. So she lay at his feet until the morning,

  43. but arose before one could recognise another.

  44. And he said, Let it not be known

  45. that the woman came to the threshing floor.

  46. And he said, Bring the garment you are wearing

  47. and hold it out.

  48. So she held it, and he measured out

  49. six measures of barley and put it on her.

  50. Then she went into the city.

  51. And when she came to her mother-in-law,

  52. she said, How did you fare, my daughter?

  53. Then she told her all about the man had done for her,

  54. saying, These six measures of barley he gave to me,

  55. for he said to me,

  56. You must not go back empty-handed

  57. to your mother-in-law.

  58. She replied, Wait, my daughter,

  59. until you learn how the matter turns out,

  60. for the man will not rest,

  61. but will settle the matter today.

  62. All right, good morning, everyone.

  63. Thank you, Rob.

  64. My name is Dave.

  65. I'm one of the pastors at the church here.

  66. Well, the story of Ruth is a feel-good story, isn't it?

  67. It's nothing like the horror stories in the book of Judges.

  68. In Ruth, no character does anything evil towards other people,

  69. but instead we see Boaz shine with his kindness

  70. and Ruth with her loyalty to Naomi.

  71. It does start with tragedy, but with each step,

  72. our anticipation grows for a satisfying, happy ending.

  73. It's got the appeal of a rags-to-riches story.

  74. Ruth is empty with nothing and no hope,

  75. but she rises up until she is full,

  76. and not just full with food, as we'll see next week.

  77. And here in Chapter 3...

  78. Oh, Dave.

  79. Here in Chapter 3, with Cinderella in our heads

  80. and all the rom-coms that we've been binge-watching in lockdown,

  81. we sense a bit of a love story going on.

  82. Boaz and Ruth seem to have a deep admiration

  83. for each other's faithfulness to the Lord.

  84. This is a feel-good story.

  85. Ruth is amazing.

  86. But it offers us so much more.

  87. A barrier we have to unlocking all the riches of this story

  88. is that it assumes what God's ancient people, Israel,

  89. understood in their bones since birth.

  90. As Israelites, they knew they were the descendants of Abraham,

  91. whom God promised to you and your offspring,

  92. I will give this land.

  93. I will be your God.

  94. Whoever blesses you, I will bless.

  95. Whoever curses you, I will curse.

  96. They were God's chosen and special people,

  97. inheriting God's promises.

  98. They were the ones whom God redeemed out of slavery in Egypt,

  99. becoming God's treasured possession,

  100. living with God in the land.

  101. And here comes the scandal that's at the heart of this story.

  102. Their neighbours, the Moabites,

  103. they are the descendants of Moab,

  104. a son born out of incest,

  105. we hear in Genesis chapter 19.

    Genesis 19 chapter mention

  106. Talk about skeletons in your family history.

  107. And the scandal gets worse.

  108. In Deuteronomy 23, the Lord commands his people,

  109. no Moabite may enter the assembly of the Lord,

  110. even to the 10th generation.

  111. None of them may enter the assembly of the Lord forever,

  112. because they did not meet you with bread and with water on the way

  113. when you came out of Egypt.

  114. And the other reason given is that Moab tried to curse Israel.

  115. You shall not seek their peace,

  116. all their prosperity,

  117. all your days,

  118. forever.

  119. Do you see the scandal of Ruth,

  120. the Moabite,

  121. coming to the land of Israel,

  122. hoping to find rest,

  123. a home,

  124. God's community,

  125. a family,

  126. a future,

  127. belonging to God

  128. and the blessings of his presence.

  129. This Moabite

  130. has zero right

  131. to the promises

  132. of the descendants of Abraham.

  133. She has zero right

  134. to be near to God

  135. in the land.

  136. She has zero right

  137. to expect to belong

  138. to his people.

  139. And she has every reason

  140. to expect

  141. the curse of God.

  142. no peace,

  143. no prosperity,

  144. no rest forever.

  145. Do you feel the scandal

  146. at the heart of the story of Ruth?

  147. What's going to happen?

  148. What will happen

  149. if Ruth draws near

  150. to this God

  151. and his people?

  152. In my mind,

  153. it seems like

  154. entering

  155. the lion cage

  156. at a zoo

  157. and hoping

  158. to be welcomed in.

  159. chapter 3,

  160. it's not

  161. a Cinderella story.

  162. It's more scandalous

  163. than that.

  164. And I think

  165. it raises this question.

  166. How does the Lord

  167. respond

  168. to the unworthy

  169. person

  170. who approaches

  171. him

  172. to find rest?

  173. how does the Lord

  174. respond?

  175. You should be very

  176. interested in the answer

  177. to this question

  178. because we have a lot

  179. in common with Ruth.

  180. Listen to what

  181. God says about

  182. each one of us

  183. who aren't Jewish

  184. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:12

  185. chapter 2,

  186. verse 12.

  187. Remember

  188. that you were

  189. at that time

  190. separated from

  191. Christ,

  192. alienated

  193. from the

  194. commonwealth

  195. of Israel

  196. and strangers

  197. to the

  198. covenants

  199. of promise,

  200. having no hope

  201. and without

  202. God

  203. in the world.

  204. And just a few

  205. verses earlier,

  206. we're told

  207. that because

  208. of the way

  209. each of us

  210. has lived,

  211. we deserve

  212. God's wrath.

  213. I remember

  214. this time

  215. when I was

  216. a young boy

  217. and I had

  218. done something

  219. I knew my

  220. parents would

  221. be angry at

  222. and they

  223. found out

  224. about it.

  225. And I was

  226. really afraid

  227. to leave

  228. my bedroom

  229. to go to

  230. the kitchen

  231. for breakfast

  232. with my

  233. family.

  234. Would they

  235. be angry?

  236. Would they

  237. be disappointed?

  238. Would they

  239. look at me

  240. and talk to

  241. me with

  242. affection

  243. ever again?

  244. And so I

  245. hid in my

  246. bedroom for

  247. quite a while.

  248. Even though

  249. we're told

  250. to come to

  251. God no matter

  252. what we've

  253. done,

  254. I think we

  255. can feel

  256. like that

  257. little boy

  258. hiding in

  259. his room.

  260. maybe there's

  261. a moral

  262. failure in

  263. your past

  264. that is

  265. big in

  266. your mind

  267. and you

  268. just don't

  269. think God

  270. could forgive

  271. that sin.

  272. Maybe it's

  273. just a general

  274. sense that

  275. no one could

  276. love you.

  277. So it's too

  278. hard to believe

  279. that God

  280. loves you.

  281. Maybe you've

  282. just learnt

  283. bit by bit

  284. growing up

  285. in this harsh

  286. world that

  287. you're

  288. better off

  289. if you

  290. never

  291. ever

  292. let your

  293. guard down.

  294. Whatever the

  295. case, if we

  296. are to find

  297. rest, we

  298. need to know

  299. the answer

  300. to Ruth's

  301. question.

  302. How does

  303. the Lord

  304. respond to

  305. the unworthy

  306. person who

  307. approaches him

  308. to find rest

  309. in his

  310. presence?

  311. So let's

  312. watch Ruth

  313. closely to

  314. find out.

  315. The focus

  316. in chapter

  317. two was

  318. on Boaz,

  319. his identity

  320. and kindness

  321. as the

  322. redeemer.

  323. And chapter

  324. three focuses

  325. on Ruth and

  326. her daring

  327. approach of

  328. Boaz.

  329. So far,

  330. Ruth and

  331. Naomi have

  332. been provided

  333. protection and

  334. food security,

  335. but what

  336. happens to

  337. them as the

  338. harvest comes

  339. to an end.

  340. In verses

  341. one to six,

  342. the scene

  343. opens with

  344. Naomi instructing

  345. Ruth with a

  346. daring, even

  347. scandalous scheme,

  348. and we're told

  349. the goal is

  350. the goal.

  351. My daughter,

  352. should I not

  353. seek rest for

  354. you that it

  355. may be well

  356. with you?

  357. She could

  358. have told her

  359. to pursue a

  360. young Israelite,

  361. perhaps a rich

  362. one with good

  363. standing in the

  364. community.

  365. But Naomi

  366. wants Ruth to

  367. have an even

  368. deeper rest

  369. by being

  370. obedient to

  371. God's word

  372. and seeking

  373. out a

  374. family, a

  375. kinsman

  376. redeemer.

  377. You see,

  378. God's law

  379. provided a way

  380. back for those

  381. cut off from

  382. his presence.

  383. So if a

  384. husband dies

  385. without having

  386. an heir,

  387. it was the

  388. obligation of

  389. his surviving

  390. brother to

  391. purchase the

  392. land and

  393. marry the

  394. widow.

  395. And the

  396. firstborn son

  397. carried on the

  398. name of the

  399. dead husband,

  400. continuing his

  401. family name in

  402. the land.

  403. But our

  404. question still

  405. remains, does

  406. this promise of

  407. redemption and

  408. rest apply to

  409. this Moabite?

  410. Naomi wants

  411. rest for

  412. Ruth and

  413. Ruth wants a

  414. baby boy to

  415. carry on the

  416. name of

  417. Naomi's

  418. family.

  419. But the

  420. way to

  421. seek redemption

  422. is going to

  423. be really

  424. risky.

  425. Naomi tells

  426. Ruth, go

  427. tonight to

  428. the threshing

  429. floor where

  430. they get the

  431. grain out of

  432. the harvest.

  433. in Hosea

    Hosea 9:1

  434. 9 verse

  435. 1, it

  436. appears that

  437. threshing

  438. floors could

  439. have prostitutes

  440. and drunken

  441. revelry.

  442. Boaz,

  443. however, we

  444. know he

  445. fears the

  446. Lord, so we

  447. expect his

  448. threshing

  449. floor to be

  450. different.

  451. But still,

  452. for Ruth to

  453. be asked to

  454. go to the

  455. threshing

  456. floor at

  457. night, if

  458. she is seen

  459. by anyone,

  460. her intentions

  461. will be

  462. instantly

  463. suspected.

  464. If she

  465. had any

  466. good reputation

  467. as a

  468. Moabite, it

  469. would be

  470. lost forever.

  471. And then

  472. the plan is

  473. wash and

  474. put perfume

  475. on and

  476. your best

  477. cloak.

  478. This is a

  479. picture of

  480. a bride

  481. preparing

  482. herself.

  483. What Ruth

  484. wants from

  485. Boaz will

  486. be obvious,

  487. getting

  488. straight to

  489. the point.

  490. And then

  491. watch where

  492. Boaz lays

  493. down to

  494. sleep and

  495. then go

  496. uncover his

  497. legs and

  498. lay with

  499. him.

  500. That picture

  501. in the

  502. children's

  503. story just

  504. captured the

  505. awkwardness and

  506. wrongness of

  507. that scene.

  508. Is this a

  509. plan to

  510. seduce Boaz?

  511. A plan to

  512. force him to

  513. marry Ruth?

  514. to lay

  515. down is

  516. repeated so

  517. many times in

  518. this chapter.

  519. It is used

  520. in the

  521. Bible as

  522. an idiom

  523. for

  524. intercourse.

  525. But what

  526. we're going to

  527. see is that

  528. despite the

  529. sexual

  530. possibilities,

  531. nothing

  532. immoral

  533. occurs,

  534. quite the

  535. opposite.

  536. Seduction is

  537. not the

  538. plan here.

  539. So why

  540. the secrecy

  541. at night?

  542. Perhaps it's

  543. to give

  544. Boaz no

  545. pressure to

  546. agree to

  547. marry Ruth.

  548. He can

  549. reject Ruth

  550. while saving

  551. face in the

  552. community.

  553. And perhaps

  554. it's also to

  555. cause no

  556. scandal because

  557. there is

  558. another

  559. redeemer.

  560. But this

  561. plan is very

  562. direct.

  563. Ruth will

  564. be wanting

  565. from Boaz

  566. marriage,

  567. but it's

  568. very risky.

  569. Ruth has

  570. to go all

  571. in with

  572. Boaz,

  573. which

  574. highlights

  575. Ruth's

  576. incredible

  577. faith.

  578. We're told

  579. she did

  580. just as

  581. her mother

  582. in law

  583. had

  584. commanded

  585. her.

  586. Ruth is

  587. forsaking

  588. any other

  589. hope of

  590. security in

  591. this life

  592. and pinning

  593. all her

  594. future on

  595. Boaz and

  596. ultimately on

  597. the Lord.

  598. In

  599. verse 6

  600. to 15,

  601. we go to

  602. the threshing

  603. floor.

  604. Ruth is

  605. hiding in

  606. the dark,

  607. waiting for

  608. Boaz to

  609. go to

  610. bed.

  611. She is

  612. putting

  613. herself at

  614. great risk

  615. of the

  616. young male

  617. workers

  618. there,

  619. risking being

  620. caught or

  621. much worse.

  622. She is

  623. letting go

  624. of all

  625. other

  626. securities

  627. she could

  628. have.

  629. After

  630. Boaz

  631. finishes

  632. eating and

  633. drinking,

  634. he goes

  635. by himself

  636. away from

  637. the workers

  638. to the

  639. far side

  640. of the

  641. heap of

  642. grain.

  643. Ruth softly

  644. approaches

  645. him.

  646. She

  647. uncovers

  648. his legs

  649. and lay

  650. down at

  651. his feet.

  652. This scene

  653. is so

  654. intimate.

  655. To uncover

  656. his feet

  657. and legs,

  658. to lay

  659. with him

  660. in secret

  661. in the

  662. dark.

  663. It is

  664. just Boaz

  665. and Ruth

  666. here.

  667. She has

  668. placed herself

  669. in such

  670. an incredibly

  671. vulnerable

  672. position.

  673. When it

  674. got cold

  675. at midnight,

  676. Boaz

  677. wakes up

  678. and he

  679. is utter

  680. shock.

  681. He

  682. notices a

  683. woman lying

  684. with him.

  685. What is

  686. he going

  687. to do?

  688. It

  689. appears

  690. that Boaz

  691. does not

  692. permit women

  693. at his

  694. threshing

  695. floor.

  696. Will he

  697. abide by

  698. his own

  699. rules?

  700. Will he

  701. take

  702. advantage

  703. of her

  704. vulnerability?

  705. If he's

  706. overtaken

  707. with desire

  708. as the

  709. boss,

  710. he could

  711. get away

  712. with it.

  713. Or if

  714. he's

  715. concerned

  716. with his

  717. own

  718. honour,

  719. he might

  720. sound an

  721. alarm and

  722. drive her

  723. out and

  724. put it

  725. a shame

  726. in a

  727. way that

  728. would stick

  729. to her

  730. name

  731. forever.

  732. But he

  733. has the

  734. presence of

  735. mind to

  736. find out

  737. what's

  738. going on.

  739. And this

  740. begins the

  741. whispered and

  742. intimate

  743. conversation.

  744. Who are

  745. you?

  746. Boaz

  747. asked.

  748. In

  749. chapter

  750. two,

  751. bowing at

  752. his feet,

  753. she humbled

  754. herself,

  755. claiming she

  756. wasn't even

  757. worthy to

  758. be called

  759. his servant

  760. because she

  761. was a

  762. Moabite.

  763. But her

  764. reply here

  765. is an

  766. amazing

  767. expression

  768. of faith

  769. in her

  770. redeemer.

  771. I am

  772. Ruth,

  773. your

  774. servant.

  775. Spread

  776. your wings

  777. over your

  778. servant,

  779. for you are

  780. a redeemer.

  781. wings means

  782. the corner

  783. of your

  784. garment,

  785. what they

  786. use for

  787. their

  788. blanket.

  789. Spread

  790. your

  791. blanket

  792. over me.

  793. Bring

  794. me into

  795. the warmth

  796. of your

  797. intimacy,

  798. under your

  799. protection,

  800. providing me

  801. security and

  802. a future

  803. for me

  804. and Naomi's

  805. family.

  806. Boaz,

  807. you should

  808. marry me.

  809. How

  810. presumptuous

  811. does this

  812. sound coming

  813. from a

  814. Moabite?

  815. She is

  816. well aware

  817. she has

  818. come from

  819. the enemies

  820. of God's

  821. people,

  822. but she

  823. knows God's

  824. law that

  825. promises the

  826. nearest brother

  827. will redeem

  828. a childless

  829. widow,

  830. bringing her

  831. under his

  832. care,

  833. under his

  834. wings.

  835. She's

  836. saying to

  837. Boaz,

  838. Boaz,

  839. remember that

  840. day in the

  841. field when

  842. you prayed

  843. that the

  844. Lord would

  845. be kind

  846. to me

  847. because I

  848. have come

  849. to take

  850. refuge under

  851. the wings

  852. of the

  853. Lord?

  854. Boaz,

  855. come good

  856. on your

  857. word.

  858. Become the

  859. living expression

  860. of the

  861. Lord spreading

  862. his wings

  863. over me.

  864. So what

  865. will this

  866. redeemer do

  867. with this

  868. unworthy

  869. Moabite?

  870. Will he

  871. take advantage

  872. of her,

  873. quietly turn

  874. her away,

  875. or publicly

  876. put her

  877. to shame?

  878. May you

  879. be blessed

  880. by the

  881. Lord,

  882. my daughter.

  883. He blesses,

  884. he doesn't

  885. curse.

  886. he praises

  887. her faithful,

  888. loving kindness,

  889. the Hebrew

  890. word hesed,

  891. that wonderful

  892. character trait

  893. of the Lord

  894. himself.

  895. Is she

  896. being kind

  897. to an older

  898. Boaz for not

  899. chasing after

  900. younger men?

  901. No doubt

  902. Boaz and

  903. Ruth have a

  904. deep respect

  905. for each

  906. other's

  907. faithfulness and

  908. kindness,

  909. which makes

  910. them so

  911. suitable for

  912. marriage.

  913. the greater

  914. love story

  915. is between

  916. Ruth and

  917. Naomi,

  918. between Ruth

  919. and the

  920. Lord.

  921. Ruth is

  922. seeking

  923. redemption for

  924. herself and

  925. Naomi's family.

  926. And by doing

  927. this, she's

  928. being faithful to

  929. what the Lord

  930. says to do.

  931. and her

  932. all-in

  933. faith,

  934. her

  935. vulnerable

  936. faith

  937. is fully

  938. rewarded.

  939. Do not

  940. fear.

  941. Without

  942. hesitation,

  943. he promises,

  944. I will do

  945. all that you

  946. ask.

  947. Even as a

  948. Moabite,

  949. she is

  950. known in

  951. Bethlehem

  952. as being

  953. a worthy

  954. woman.

  955. She is

  956. a picture

  957. of the

  958. covenant

  959. loyalty that

  960. the Lord

  961. longed for

  962. his rebellious

  963. Israelites to

  964. have towards

  965. him.

  966. But Boaz

  967. also redeems

  968. her the

  969. right way.

  970. He doesn't

  971. take any

  972. shortcuts.

  973. He doesn't

  974. do it

  975. illegitimately.

  976. But as

  977. we'll see

  978. next week,

  979. he does it

  980. in public

  981. with

  982. witnesses.

  983. He

  984. redeems

  985. her

  986. properly.

  987. The

  988. problem

  989. is there's

  990. a closer

  991. relative,

  992. but there's

  993. no guarantee

  994. that this

  995. other man

  996. will give

  997. her rest.

  998. So Boaz

  999. makes this

  1000. wonderful,

  1001. assuring

  1002. promise as

  1003. she awaits

  1004. the outcome.

  1005. As the

  1006. Lord lives,

  1007. I will

  1008. redeem you.

  1009. With this

  1010. promise,

  1011. her heart

  1012. can be at

  1013. rest.

  1014. And then

  1015. Boaz

  1016. protects her

  1017. honour by

  1018. doing

  1019. absolutely

  1020. nothing

  1021. inappropriate,

  1022. protecting her

  1023. from any

  1024. outside danger

  1025. in the

  1026. night,

  1027. letting her

  1028. sleep until

  1029. the morning,

  1030. and then

  1031. protecting her

  1032. honour by

  1033. sending her

  1034. home in the

  1035. early hours of

  1036. the morning.

  1037. But she

  1038. doesn't return

  1039. empty.

  1040. the

  1041. redeemer

  1042. gives a

  1043. generous

  1044. pledge that

  1045. he will

  1046. fully

  1047. come good

  1048. on his

  1049. promise.

  1050. Ruth's

  1051. daring

  1052. faith in

  1053. this

  1054. redeemer is

  1055. fully

  1056. rewarded.

  1057. No longer

  1058. cut off from

  1059. God and

  1060. his people,

  1061. but having

  1062. her redeemer

  1063. spread his

  1064. garment over

  1065. her,

  1066. making her

  1067. his own.

  1068. And in

  1069. the final

  1070. scene,

  1071. Ruth returns

  1072. to Naomi.

  1073. She literally

  1074. asks Ruth,

  1075. who are

  1076. you,

  1077. my daughter?

  1078. Her identity

  1079. might have

  1080. changed overnight

  1081. and it

  1082. has.

  1083. Ruth reports

  1084. the good

  1085. news and

  1086. shows her

  1087. the pledge

  1088. of the

  1089. abundant

  1090. grain,

  1091. a foretaste

  1092. of the

  1093. complete

  1094. filling to

  1095. come.

  1096. And the

  1097. chapter ends

  1098. with the

  1099. redeemer

  1100. himself,

  1101. not

  1102. resting

  1103. until he

  1104. fulfills his

  1105. promise.

  1106. And as

  1107. they wait,

  1108. their faith

  1109. rests in

  1110. the power

  1111. and in

  1112. the character

  1113. of the

  1114. redeemer to

  1115. do what he

  1116. has promised.

  1117. Isn't

  1118. this a

  1119. wonderful

  1120. story?

  1121. Here we

  1122. have this

  1123. Moabite,

  1124. an enemy

  1125. of God's

  1126. people,

  1127. expressing

  1128. the faith

  1129. God has

  1130. always

  1131. desired

  1132. from his

  1133. people.

  1134. The

  1135. Lord said

  1136. of Israel

  1137. in Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 16:8

  1138. 16 verse

  1139. 8,

  1140. I spread

  1141. the corner

  1142. of my

  1143. garment

  1144. over you

  1145. and covered

  1146. your nakedness.

  1147. I made

  1148. my vow

  1149. to you

  1150. and entered

  1151. into a

  1152. covenant

  1153. with you,

  1154. declares

  1155. the Lord

  1156. God,

  1157. and you

  1158. became

  1159. mine.

  1160. But Israel

  1161. repeatedly

  1162. chased

  1163. after other

  1164. gods and

  1165. other things

  1166. to give

  1167. them rest.

  1168. But Ruth

  1169. goes to

  1170. the Lord

  1171. to find

  1172. rest.

  1173. the story

  1174. of Ruth

  1175. and Boaz

  1176. gives us

  1177. such a

  1178. warm

  1179. picture

  1180. of what

  1181. it means

  1182. for us

  1183. today to

  1184. have faith

  1185. in Christ,

  1186. our Redeemer,

  1187. and to

  1188. find rest

  1189. in him.

  1190. True

  1191. faith

  1192. is daring.

  1193. Faith

  1194. forsakes

  1195. all other

  1196. things that

  1197. offer you

  1198. security in

  1199. this life.

  1200. faith

  1201. is personal

  1202. and intimate

  1203. between you

  1204. and your

  1205. Redeemer.

  1206. Faith

  1207. comes to

  1208. Christ

  1209. completely

  1210. vulnerable

  1211. before him.

  1212. And yet

  1213. faith

  1214. expectantly

  1215. calls on

  1216. Christ,

  1217. come good

  1218. on your

  1219. promise.

  1220. Forgive

  1221. me,

  1222. bring me

  1223. into your

  1224. permanent

  1225. covenant

  1226. care.

  1227. faith

  1228. and faith

  1229. waits for

  1230. your

  1231. Redeemer

  1232. to fully

  1233. make you

  1234. his own,

  1235. a future

  1236. with him,

  1237. an inheritance

  1238. in the new

  1239. heavens and

  1240. earth.

  1241. Going back

  1242. to Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  1243. chapter 2,

  1244. remember

  1245. that you

  1246. were at

  1247. that time

  1248. separated

  1249. from Christ,

  1250. alienated,

  1251. from the

  1252. commonwealth

  1253. of Israel

  1254. and strangers

  1255. to the

  1256. covenants

  1257. of promise,

  1258. having no

  1259. hope

  1260. and without

  1261. God

  1262. in the

  1263. world.

  1264. But now,

  1265. but now,

  1266. in Christ

  1267. Jesus,

  1268. you who

  1269. were once

  1270. far off

  1271. have been

  1272. brought

  1273. near

  1274. by the

  1275. blood of

  1276. Christ.

  1277. It is

  1278. our

  1279. Redeemer's

  1280. blood

  1281. shed for

  1282. us

  1283. that should

  1284. give you

  1285. every

  1286. confidence

  1287. to come

  1288. close to

  1289. him in

  1290. faith.

  1291. how does

  1292. the Lord

  1293. respond to

  1294. the unworthy

  1295. person who

  1296. approaches him

  1297. for rest?

  1298. Like

  1299. Boaz,

  1300. Christ will

  1301. never turn

  1302. you away.

  1303. He will

  1304. not put you

  1305. to shame.

  1306. He will

  1307. never use

  1308. or mistreat

  1309. you,

  1310. but he

  1311. will spread

  1312. the corner

  1313. of his

  1314. garment

  1315. over you

  1316. and make

  1317. you his

  1318. very own.

  1319. So what

  1320. are you

  1321. waiting for?

  1322. Would you

  1323. pray with me

  1324. as we

  1325. finish?

  1326. Oh,

  1327. dear Lord,

  1328. we know

  1329. slightly,

  1330. just a little

  1331. bit,

  1332. of how

  1333. unworthy

  1334. we are

  1335. to come

  1336. near to

  1337. you.

  1338. Forgive us

  1339. for thinking

  1340. that we

  1341. have any

  1342. merit in

  1343. ourself

  1344. that deserves

  1345. your blessing,

  1346. but how

  1347. we thank

  1348. you that

  1349. you call

  1350. us to

  1351. come,

  1352. how we

  1353. thank you

  1354. that you

  1355. assure us

  1356. that your

  1357. character is

  1358. good and

  1359. that you

  1360. will be

  1361. gracious to

  1362. us when

  1363. we come,

  1364. that you

  1365. will not

  1366. turn us

  1367. away,

  1368. that you

  1369. will bring

  1370. us into

  1371. covenant

  1372. relationship

  1373. and protection

  1374. and blessing,

  1375. a sure

  1376. future with

  1377. you forever.

  1378. Lord,

  1379. we don't

  1380. deserve this.

  1381. Help us

  1382. trust your

  1383. goodness.

  1384. Lord,

  1385. I pray for

  1386. each one of

  1387. us,

  1388. wherever we're

  1389. at,

  1390. please give

  1391. us confidence

  1392. in your

  1393. goodness

  1394. goodness,

  1395. that makes

  1396. us able

  1397. to come

  1398. to you,

  1399. be vulnerable

  1400. with you

  1401. and fully

  1402. give ourselves

  1403. into your

  1404. hands.

  1405. We praise

  1406. you,

  1407. Christ,

  1408. for the

  1409. blood you

  1410. shed for

  1411. us,

  1412. so that you

  1413. might spread

  1414. your garment

  1415. over us

  1416. and make us

  1417. yours.

  1418. Make us

  1419. thankful,

  1420. God.

  1421. Give us

  1422. this faith

  1423. that we need.

  1424. Give us

  1425. this rest.

  1426. In Jesus'

  1427. name,

  1428. Amen.
