  1. John chapter 21.

    John 21 chapter mention

  2. After this, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias,

  3. and he revealed himself in this way.

  4. Simon Peter, Thomas, called the twin, Nathaniel of Canaan Gallery,

  5. the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together.

  6. Simon Peter said to them,

  7. I'm going fishing.

  8. And they said to him,

  9. We'll go with you.

  10. They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

  11. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore,

  12. yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.

  13. Jesus said to them,

  14. Children, do you have any fish?

  15. They answered him,

  16. No.

  17. He said to them,

  18. Cast the net on the right side of the boat,

  19. and you'll find some.

  20. So they cast it,

  21. and now they were not able to haul it in,

  22. because of the quantity of fish.

  23. That disciple whom Jesus loved,

  24. therefore said to Peter,

  25. It is the Lord.

  26. When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord,

  27. he put on his outer garment,

  28. for he was stripped for work,

  29. and threw himself into the sea.

  30. The other disciples came in the boat,

  31. dragging the net full of fish,

  32. for they were not far from the land,

  33. but about a hundred yards off.

  34. When they got out on land,

  35. they saw a charcoal fire in place,

  36. with fish laid out on it,

  37. and bread.

  38. Jesus said to them,

  39. Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.

  40. So Simon Peter went aboard,

  41. and hauled the net ashore,

  42. full of large fish,

  43. one hundred and fifty-three of them.

  44. And although there were so many,

  45. the net was not torn.

  46. Jesus said to them,

  47. Come, have breakfast.

  48. Now none of the disciples dared ask him,

  49. Who are you?

  50. They knew it was the Lord.

  51. Jesus came and took the bread,

  52. and gave it to them,

  53. and so with the fish.

  54. This was now the third time,

  55. that Jesus was revealed to the disciples,

  56. after he was raised from the dead.

  57. When they had finished breakfast,

  58. Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  59. Simon, son of John,

  60. Do you love me more than these?

  61. He said to him,

  62. Yes, Lord,

  63. you know that I love you.

  64. He said to him,

  65. Feed my lambs.

  66. He said to him a second time,

  67. Simon, son of John,

  68. do you love me?

  69. He said to him,

  70. Yes, Lord,

  71. you know that I love you.

  72. He said to him,

  73. Tend my sheep.

  74. He said to him the third time,

  75. Simon,

  76. son of John,

  77. do you love me?

  78. Peter was grieved,

  79. because he said to him the third time,

  80. Do you love me?

  81. And he said to him,

  82. Lord,

  83. you know everything.

  84. You know that I love you.

  85. Jesus said to him,

  86. Feed my sheep.

  87. Truly,

  88. truly,

  89. I say to you,

  90. when you were young,

  91. you used to dress yourself

  92. and walk wherever you wanted.

  93. But when you are old,

  94. you will stretch out your hands

  95. and another will dress you

  96. and carry you where you do not want to go.

  97. This he said to show by what kind of death

  98. he was to glorify God.

  99. And after saying this,

  100. he said to him,

  101. Follow me.

  102. Peter turned and saw the disciple

  103. whom Jesus loved following them,

  104. the one who had also leaned back against him

  105. during the supper and had said,

  106. Lord,

  107. who is that is going to betray you?

  108. When Peter saw him,

  109. he said to Jesus,

  110. What about this man?

  111. Jesus said to him,

  112. If it is my will that he remain until I come,

  113. what is that to you?

  114. You follow me.

  115. So the saying spread abroad among the brothers

  116. that this disciple was not to die.

  117. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die.

  118. But if it is my will that he remain until I come,

  119. what is that to you?

  120. This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things

  121. and who has written these things.

  122. And we know that his testimony is true.

  123. Now there are also many other things that Jesus did.

  124. Were every one of them to be written,

  125. I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books

  126. that would be written.

  127. Well,

  128. good morning,

  129. everyone.

  130. I don't know what all the talk about cold weather is.

  131. I've been waiting for this for months.

  132. So let's no more talk about cold weather.

  133. This is ideal weather.

  134. Well,

  135. at least for me anyway.

  136. Okay,

  137. let's turn to God's word this morning.

  138. And I want to introduce it by connecting the gospel

  139. with Operation Overlord,

  140. which was the code name for the Allied operation

  141. to liberate Europe from Nazi occupation.

  142. And it had several phases.

  143. There was years of preparation.

  144. Then D-Day was the landing in Normandy

  145. in which a beachhead was established.

  146. And then the third phase,

  147. the final phase,

  148. was a push to Berlin,

  149. resulting in victory in Europe

  150. about 10 months later.

  151. I want to suggest that in the same way,

  152. the gospel,

  153. in a sense,

  154. is Jesus' code name for Operation Lord Over Everything

  155. to the End of the Earth.

  156. It was an operation to liberate God's people

  157. from the darkness of sin

  158. and bring them into light and life in Jesus.

  159. And the thing I want you to understand this morning

  160. is that it also had several phases.

  161. There were many,

  162. many years of preparation.

  163. I guess that's what we would call the Old Testament.

  164. And then Jesus had his own personal D-Day,

  165. as it were.

  166. It was launched.

  167. And that established the beachhead of salvation

  168. through the brutal, bloody events

  169. of his life, death, and resurrection.

  170. And then,

  171. as we move into chapter 20 and 21 in John,

  172. the push begins to take the good news

  173. of liberation and renewal in Jesus

  174. to the ends of the earth.

  175. Phases in this work of God's salvation.

  176. And friends,

  177. I suggested last Sunday

  178. that John 21

  179. is the end of the beginning.

  180. The beachhead has been established.

  181. And Jesus affirmed that

  182. when he greeted his disciples

  183. on the day of his resurrection

  184. with the words,

  185. Peace be with you,

  186. and breathed his Holy Spirit into them.

  187. Turn back to chapter 20,

  188. verses 19 to 22.

  189. I'm going to read them to you now.

  190. They're important words to remember

  191. in the context of chapter 21.

  192. On the evening of that day,

  193. the first day of the week,

  194. that's the day of his resurrection,

  195. the doors being locked

  196. where the disciples were

  197. for fear of the Jews.

  198. Jesus came and stood among them

  199. and said to them,

  200. Peace be with you.

  201. When he had said this,

  202. he showed them his hands

  203. and his side.

  204. Then his disciples were glad

  205. when they saw the Lord.

  206. Jesus said to them again,

  207. emphasis,

  208. Jesus said to them again,

  209. Peace be with you.

  210. As the Father has sent me,

  211. even so I am sending you.

  212. And when he had said this,

  213. he breathed on them

  214. and said to them,

  215. Receive the Holy Spirit.

  216. Jesus had acted on their behalf

  217. to secure a new state of peace with God.

  218. He had dealt with God's wrath,

  219. dealt with a penalty for their sins,

  220. had secured forgiveness.

  221. And in the picture language of Ezekiel,

  222. he had breathed new life

  223. into those dead in sin

  224. through his Holy Spirit.

  225. That's peace with God.

  226. They also experienced

  227. the peace of God.

  228. Jesus came to them

  229. in that moment

  230. in warmth

  231. and friendship,

  232. though they had abandoned him

  233. and may well

  234. have expected his reprimand.

  235. He came to them

  236. as one with power

  237. to overcome sin,

  238. death,

  239. to overcome the world

  240. in rebellion against God.

  241. And he came to them

  242. speaking peace

  243. to fearful,

  244. doubting,

  245. troubled hearts.

  246. Peace with God

  247. and peace of God.

  248. The beachhead

  249. has been established.

  250. But at the same time,

  251. John 21

  252. is also the beginning

  253. of the end

  254. as the next phase

  255. of God's operation

  256. and salvation begins.

  257. Jesus is,

  258. in effect,

  259. saying to them,

  260. I think,

  261. this is who you now are

  262. in me,

  263. the resurrection man.

  264. This is the new

  265. resurrection community

  266. I've made you

  267. and which you have

  268. the privilege to help

  269. in extending

  270. to the ends of the earth

  271. so that all my people

  272. will be saved

  273. just like you've been saved.

  274. And ultimately then,

  275. God will be glorified

  276. as he has always planned

  277. to be glorified.

  278. And so this interaction

  279. with Peter,

  280. in a sense,

  281. is Jesus joining the dots

  282. for Peter.

  283. And the question is,

  284. is it restoration,

  285. is it a challenge,

  286. or is it a commission?

  287. Well,

  288. most commonly,

  289. verses 15 to 19

  290. are presented

  291. as the restoration

  292. of Peter

  293. to the ranks

  294. of the disciples

  295. soon to become apostles

  296. because they see

  297. Jesus' three questions

  298. corresponding to Peter's

  299. three denials

  300. of Jesus.

  301. But I believe

  302. something much bigger

  303. is on show

  304. in the way

  305. John constructs

  306. this narrative.

  307. Now,

  308. have a look at

  309. verse 15 there

  310. to start with.

  311. When they had finished

  312. breakfast,

  313. Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  314. Simon,

  315. son of John,

  316. do you love me

  317. more than these?

  318. They'd been enjoying

  319. breakfast with Jesus,

  320. a time of fellowship

  321. in which he manifested

  322. more of himself

  323. as the resurrection man

  324. to them.

  325. He displayed his commitment

  326. to and love of

  327. and concern for

  328. their needs.

  329. Then,

  330. out of the blue,

  331. Jesus asked Peter

  332. this confronting question

  333. and he asked it

  334. in a very formal,

  335. business-like way.

  336. The fact that Jesus

  337. uses the term,

  338. uses the name

  339. Simon,

  340. son of John,

  341. is interesting.

  342. And it takes me back

  343. to chapter 1,

  344. verse 42.

  345. And I'm going to turn back

  346. and read that,

  347. chapter 1,

  348. verse 40,

  349. through to 42,

  350. actually,

  351. where it's the very first time

  352. Jesus meets Simon

  353. and it's in the context

  354. of Jesus calling

  355. his disciples.

  356. It says this,

  357. one of the two

  358. who heard John speak,

  359. that's John the Baptist,

  360. that is,

  361. one of the two

  362. who heard John speak

  363. and followed Jesus

  364. was Andrew,

  365. Simon Peter's brother.

  366. He first found

  367. his own brother,

  368. Simon,

  369. and said to him,

  370. we have found

  371. the Messiah,

  372. which means Christ.

  373. He brought him

  374. to Jesus.

  375. Jesus looked at him

  376. and said,

  377. so,

  378. you are Simon,

  379. the son of John?

  380. You shall be called

  381. Cephas,

  382. which means Peter.

  383. Now,

  384. it's interesting

  385. that John,

  386. I think,

  387. again,

  388. takes us back

  389. to chapter 1,

  390. as the fishing story

  391. in verses 1 to 3

  392. also took us back

  393. to chapter 1.

  394. So it goes like this,

  395. I think,

  396. when Peter first met,

  397. sorry,

  398. when Jesus first met Peter,

  399. it was as God's Messiah.

  400. We have found the Messiah,

  401. God's long-awaited

  402. Savior and King.

  403. And it was in that context

  404. and in that role

  405. that Jesus called Peter

  406. to be a disciple

  407. or follower

  408. and renamed him.

  409. Now,

  410. in those days,

  411. names were really significant.

  412. They described

  413. the whole personality.

  414. So therefore,

  415. changing someone's name

  416. was a really big deal.

  417. In fact,

  418. it was an assertion

  419. of authority

  420. or ownership

  421. by the one

  422. changing the name.

  423. So I think

  424. Jesus is saying

  425. that Peter

  426. was his person.

  427. Peter,

  428. you are now

  429. my person.

  430. You are now

  431. to live under me

  432. as Messiah.

  433. And one day,

  434. I will make you

  435. to become

  436. as solid

  437. and dependable

  438. as a rock.

  439. So here's the point.

  440. I believe

  441. their first conversation

  442. was all about

  443. identity

  444. and commitment.

  445. First of all,

  446. Jesus to him

  447. in calling him

  448. to be a disciple

  449. and then his to Jesus

  450. living up to,

  451. as it were,

  452. his new name,

  453. his new status

  454. conferred on him

  455. by Messiah.

  456. Now,

  457. back in John chapter 21,

    John 21 chapter mention

  458. their last recorded conversation

  459. is also about

  460. identity

  461. and commitment.

  462. Peter,

  463. says Jesus,

  464. having enjoyed

  465. my fellowship

  466. over breakfast,

  467. my display

  468. of identity

  469. and commitment

  470. to you,

  471. the big question

  472. now is

  473. how much

  474. do I shape

  475. your identity

  476. and your affection?

  477. Peter,

  478. who or what

  479. is your affection

  480. and treasure?

  481. More than these,

  482. is it your fishing buddies

  483. and the fishing

  484. and the current lifestyle

  485. you've always known,

  486. the one you've loved,

  487. the one you're comfortable in,

  488. is that what will

  489. shape your future

  490. or is it me?

  491. Is that what will

  492. shape your affection

  493. or is it me?

  494. Peter,

  495. what will shape

  496. your future in life?

  497. Will it be me,

  498. the resurrection man

  499. and the identity,

  500. privilege

  501. and responsibility

  502. of being my person

  503. in my new resurrection

  504. community?

  505. And so,

  506. Jesus pushes him

  507. again

  508. and again.

  509. Do you love me,

  510. Peter?

  511. That is,

  512. he leaves out

  513. the comparative bit

  514. this time.

  515. It's,

  516. do you love me

  517. absolutely,

  518. not comparatively,

  519. but with total

  520. all-in identity

  521. and commitment

  522. from the inside out?

  523. Peter,

  524. do you love me?

  525. Now,

  526. it does seem like

  527. Jesus was reminding

  528. Peter of his cheap words

  529. just a couple of weeks

  530. earlier.

  531. And again,

  532. those words were expressed

  533. in the context

  534. of fellowship

  535. over a meal,

  536. remember,

  537. in the upper room.

  538. And remember,

  539. the situation,

  540. it's a very tragic situation.

  541. Peter,

  542. Peter boasted

  543. such absolute

  544. love for,

  545. identity with

  546. and commitment

  547. to Jesus

  548. that says,

  549. Peter,

  550. I will sacrifice

  551. my life for you,

  552. Jesus,

  553. any time.

  554. And that was

  555. back in chapter 13.

  556. And of course,

  557. we know now

  558. that just hours later,

  559. hours later,

  560. he had repeatedly

  561. disowned Jesus

  562. completely

  563. and was cowering

  564. in the shadows

  565. in fear.

  566. Against that,

  567. back in chapter 1,

  568. chapter 21,

  569. against that,

  570. Peter still appears

  571. to be the natural

  572. leader of the disciples.

  573. For instance,

  574. in chapter 21,

  575. the previous night,

  576. it was Peter

  577. who set the lead

  578. in going fishing

  579. and the rest

  580. of the disciples

  581. had gone with him.

  582. So here's the issue.

  583. The disciples

  584. would follow Peter,

  585. but would Peter

  586. follow Jesus?

  587. Now,

  588. into that mix,

  589. we've got to remember

  590. that Peter

  591. had not wanted

  592. a crucified

  593. Lord.

  594. He really

  595. wanted a military

  596. saviour

  597. who would deliver

  598. them from the Romans

  599. and make Israel

  600. great again.

  601. And remember,

  602. when Jesus

  603. was arrested,

  604. it was Peter

  605. who had a sword.

  606. It was Peter

  607. who unsheathed it

  608. and was prepared

  609. to fight.

  610. He was thinking

  611. very much

  612. in terms of

  613. a physical

  614. Messiah deliverer.

  615. And the question

  616. now put to him

  617. by Jesus

  618. was,

  619. Peter,

  620. are you now

  621. ready to commit

  622. to me

  623. as I have

  624. manifested myself

  625. to you?

  626. The sacrificial

  627. lamb,

  628. the crucified

  629. Messiah,

  630. the king

  631. of love

  632. and peace,

  633. rather than

  634. as Peter wanted

  635. or even demanded

  636. Jesus should be.

  637. Would Peter

  638. lead his fellow

  639. disciples down

  640. this pathway

  641. of identity

  642. and commitment

  643. to the one

  644. who delivers

  645. spiritually

  646. and death

  647. into life

  648. and life

  649. with God?

  650. But there's

  651. an even

  652. bigger context

  653. yet

  654. for this

  655. discussion.

  656. Look back

  657. to John

  658. 20,

  659. 21,

  660. the verses

  661. I read

  662. to you

  663. just at the

  664. start.

  665. I'll read

  666. one of the

  667. verses again,

  668. verse 21

  669. and 22.

  670. So Jesus

  671. said to them

  672. again,

  673. peace be

  674. with you.

  675. As the

  676. Father

  677. has sent

  678. me,

  679. even so

  680. I am

  681. sending

  682. you.

  683. Those two

  684. phrases

  685. very,

  686. very closely

  687. connected.

  688. And I want

  689. to highlight

  690. this morning

  691. that connection,

  692. the second

  693. of those

  694. connections,

  695. as so.

  696. As the

  697. Father

  698. has sent

  699. me,

  700. so I

  701. am

  702. sending

  703. you.

  704. Friends,

  705. here's the

  706. context of

  707. this conversation

  708. with Peter

  709. and Jesus

  710. in chapter

  711. 21.

  712. The

  713. disciples,

  714. who after

  715. all were

  716. the first

  717. fruits of

  718. the resurrection

  719. community,

  720. are to be

  721. patterned on

  722. the resurrection

  723. man.

  724. Here,

  725. from Jesus'

  726. own lips,

  727. is our

  728. identity,

  729. shape,

  730. and commitment

  731. going forward.

  732. As for

  733. Jesus,

  734. so for you

  735. who have

  736. experienced

  737. the gospel

  738. of peace

  739. in Jesus.

  740. As Jesus

  741. demonstrated

  742. all-in

  743. identity

  744. with broken,

  745. dysfunctional,

  746. rebellious,

  747. lost people

  748. by being in

  749. the world

  750. as a

  751. human,

  752. so we

  753. have been

  754. called out

  755. of the

  756. world,

  757. renewed,

  758. brought into

  759. the new

  760. resurrection

  761. community

  762. or church,

  763. then sent

  764. back into

  765. the world

  766. by Jesus

  767. to pass

  768. on the

  769. gospel of

  770. peace

  771. to equally

  772. needy people.

  773. Sorry,

  774. to pass on

  775. the gospel

  776. of peace

  777. to equally

  778. needy people.

  779. And as

  780. Jesus'

  781. success was

  782. patterned

  783. through

  784. absolute

  785. love,

  786. unswerving

  787. obedience

  788. towards his

  789. father,

  790. and total

  791. commitment

  792. to following

  793. his father's

  794. salvation

  795. purpose,

  796. so we

  797. are to be

  798. shaped by

  799. loving,

  800. obeying,

  801. and following

  802. Jesus.

  803. As Jesus

  804. taught,

  805. modeled,

  806. challenged,

  807. prayed,

  808. cared,

  809. nurtured,

  810. showed compassion,

  811. sacrificed himself,

  812. so we

  813. are to

  814. display all

  815. those characteristics.

  816. So we are to

  817. display,

  818. in summary,

  819. the mind of

  820. Christ

  821. in every

  822. way,

  823. at every

  824. point in

  825. life.

  826. That is

  827. our identity.

  828. That is

  829. our task,

  830. our commitment.

  831. Of course,

  832. that's a

  833. huge task.

  834. What's our

  835. confidence in

  836. being able to

  837. deliver in

  838. such a

  839. task?

  840. Well,

  841. again,

  842. chapter 20,

  843. that like

  844. these

  845. disciples,

  846. like these

  847. first fruits

  848. of the

  849. new

  850. resurrection

  851. community,

  852. Jesus has

  853. also breathed

  854. the power

  855. of the

  856. Holy Spirit

  857. into us,

  858. so that

  859. the mind

  860. of Christ

  861. grows in

  862. our heart

  863. and overflows

  864. into our

  865. actions.

  866. Now,

  867. back into

  868. chapter 21,

  869. in this

  870. conversation

  871. between Peter

  872. and Jesus,

  873. and we see

  874. here that

  875. Jesus uses

  876. the same

  877. language,

  878. loving,

  879. following,

  880. and obeying.

  881. So,

  882. friends,

  883. my suggestion

  884. to this

  885. morning is

  886. that Jesus

  887. is giving

  888. Peter a

  889. reminder

  890. or a

  891. challenge

  892. to express

  893. his ownership

  894. by the

  895. resurrection

  896. man,

  897. rather than

  898. some new

  899. commission

  900. that's laid

  901. on Peter

  902. as an

  903. extra task.

  904. It's as if

  905. Jesus is

  906. saying,

  907. Peter,

  908. I have

  909. made you

  910. my person

  911. from the

  912. very start.

  913. now you

  914. need to

  915. demonstrate

  916. what it

  917. is to

  918. live under

  919. the lordship

  920. of resurrection

  921. man in

  922. the new

  923. resurrection

  924. community.

  925. Peter,

  926. as you

  927. enjoy

  928. fellowship

  929. in the

  930. gospel of

  931. peace,

  932. so you

  933. should be

  934. unstoppable

  935. in your

  936. desire to

  937. extend this

  938. same privilege

  939. to others.

  940. How will

  941. that be

  942. expressed?

  943. Well,

  944. primarily in

  945. this conversation

  946. with Peter,

  947. who now I'm

  948. saying is

  949. representative

  950. of the

  951. disciples and

  952. representative

  953. then of

  954. all

  955. Christians,

  956. the first

  957. fruits and

  958. those

  959. following

  960. them.

  961. Primarily,

  962. this will

  963. be expressed

  964. in feeding,

  965. tending,

  966. or shepherding,

  967. those words

  968. are all

  969. sort of

  970. interchangeable,

  971. feeding,

  972. tending,

  973. or shepherding

  974. others in

  975. the resurrection

  976. community in

  977. a way that

  978. reflects Jesus

  979. and Jesus'

  980. ministry

  981. commitment.

  982. On the

  983. ground,

  984. that will

  985. look like

  986. gently pushing

  987. people to

  988. live

  989. under the

  990. lordship of

  991. Jesus,

  992. the source

  993. of life

  994. and every

  995. need.

  996. That's not

  997. natural to

  998. us.

  999. We have to

  1000. gently push

  1001. people and

  1002. remind them

  1003. to do

  1004. that.

  1005. We've got

  1006. to nurture

  1007. clear expression

  1008. of the mind

  1009. of Christ

  1010. or life

  1011. shaped by

  1012. God's Holy

  1013. Spirit at

  1014. every point.

  1015. We've got to

  1016. teach people

  1017. and help

  1018. people to

  1019. say yes

  1020. to righteousness

  1021. and no

  1022. to sin.

  1023. We've got to

  1024. promote unity

  1025. as the key

  1026. evidence of

  1027. Spirit renewed

  1028. and controlled

  1029. community as

  1030. per the

  1031. teaching and

  1032. prayer of

  1033. Jesus on

  1034. the night

  1035. before he

  1036. died.

  1037. If you go

  1038. back through

  1039. the chapters

  1040. in that meal

  1041. and the

  1042. evening of

  1043. Christ's

  1044. death and

  1045. then Christ's

  1046. prayer,

  1047. unity appears

  1048. over and

  1049. over and

  1050. over.

  1051. Love and

  1052. unity,

  1053. love and

  1054. unity,

  1055. unity and

  1056. love.

  1057. Promoting

  1058. unity is the

  1059. key evidence

  1060. of Spirit

  1061. renewed and

  1062. controlled

  1063. community.

  1064. So Jesus

  1065. is joining

  1066. the dots.

  1067. But there's

  1068. another thing

  1069. I want to

  1070. draw your

  1071. attention to

  1072. as I move

  1073. to a

  1074. conclusion

  1075. here.

  1076. That is

  1077. Jesus is

  1078. pointing out

  1079. to Peter

  1080. that all

  1081. in commitment

  1082. will make

  1083. the impossible

  1084. possible

  1085. and the

  1086. possible

  1087. impossible.

  1088. Now that's

  1089. a bit of a

  1090. complicated

  1091. heading as

  1092. I'm reading

  1093. that.

  1094. I'm just

  1095. thinking,

  1096. my goodness.

  1097. Anyway,

  1098. I'll try and

  1099. explain it to

  1100. you.

  1101. Peter is

  1102. still having

  1103. the dots

  1104. connected to

  1105. him by

  1106. Jesus in

  1107. two very

  1108. practical

  1109. points of

  1110. commitment

  1111. here as

  1112. we wind

  1113. up these

  1114. verses.

  1115. The first

  1116. is this,

  1117. in respect

  1118. of Peter's

  1119. desire to

  1120. show total

  1121. commitment to

  1122. Jesus,

  1123. I'm taking

  1124. you back

  1125. now to

  1126. what Peter

  1127. said on

  1128. the night

  1129. of Jesus'

  1130. crucifixion.

  1131. That is,

  1132. I am

  1133. prepared to

  1134. sacrifice my

  1135. life for

  1136. you,

  1137. Jesus.

  1138. But of

  1139. course,

  1140. fear had

  1141. caused

  1142. him to

  1143. hold

  1144. back from

  1145. sacrificing

  1146. his own

  1147. life for

  1148. the sake

  1149. of Jesus.

  1150. Now,

  1151. interestingly,

  1152. verse 18

  1153. and 19,

  1154. Jesus informs

  1155. Peter that

  1156. such a

  1157. display remains

  1158. not only

  1159. possible for

  1160. Peter,

  1161. but will

  1162. actually happen

  1163. as it were

  1164. the second

  1165. time round.

  1166. So the

  1167. question is,

  1168. what will

  1169. make the

  1170. difference to

  1171. his commitment

  1172. second time

  1173. round?

  1174. What will

  1175. enable Peter

  1176. to stay

  1177. faithful to

  1178. Jesus,

  1179. collapse and

  1180. fear and

  1181. retreat?

  1182. Well,

  1183. look at the

  1184. end of the

  1185. verse there.

  1186. Follow

  1187. me.

  1188. Following

  1189. Jesus

  1190. will be the

  1191. difference.

  1192. That is,

  1193. Peter,

  1194. keep your

  1195. eyes firmly

  1196. fixed on

  1197. me,

  1198. says Jesus.

  1199. Keep your

  1200. eyes firmly

  1201. fixed on me

  1202. as the

  1203. resurrection

  1204. man and

  1205. as part of

  1206. the new

  1207. resurrection

  1208. community,

  1209. which will

  1210. convince you

  1211. there is

  1212. something

  1213. better than

  1214. this life,

  1215. something bigger

  1216. than this

  1217. life, and

  1218. that is life

  1219. with the

  1220. resurrection

  1221. man in

  1222. heaven.

  1223. Friends,

  1224. Peter was

  1225. learning that

  1226. the lordship

  1227. of Jesus is

  1228. not just

  1229. something to

  1230. live under,

  1231. it's something

  1232. to die

  1233. under if

  1234. required.

  1235. And in

  1236. his death,

  1237. Jesus says,

  1238. you will

  1239. glorify the

  1240. father.

  1241. You brought

  1242. shame on

  1243. Messiah when

  1244. you first

  1245. stood in

  1246. retreat and

  1247. fear and

  1248. denial,

  1249. but following

  1250. Jesus,

  1251. now as a

  1252. member of

  1253. the new

  1254. resurrection

  1255. community,

  1256. having

  1257. experienced

  1258. the gospel

  1259. of peace,

  1260. the renewal

  1261. that comes

  1262. with it,

  1263. Peter,

  1264. you will

  1265. bring glory

  1266. to the

  1267. Lord.

  1268. And the

  1269. second

  1270. practical

  1271. point in

  1272. verse 20,

  1273. 23,

  1274. is all

  1275. in

  1276. commitment

  1277. to Jesus

  1278. will stop

  1279. a wrong

  1280. sort of

  1281. competitiveness

  1282. in this

  1283. new

  1284. resurrection

  1285. community.

  1286. Now,

  1287. it's not

  1288. clear from

  1289. the text,

  1290. but it

  1291. would appear

  1292. that when

  1293. Peter inquired

  1294. about John's

  1295. future,

  1296. that Jesus

  1297. heard something

  1298. more than

  1299. just curiosity

  1300. in Peter's

  1301. inquiry.

  1302. So the

  1303. question then

  1304. is,

  1305. did Jesus

  1306. hear competition

  1307. based in

  1308. fear that

  1309. Jesus loved

  1310. the beloved

  1311. disciple?

  1312. That's who

  1313. John was

  1314. constantly

  1315. referred to,

  1316. the beloved

  1317. disciple,

  1318. the one that

  1319. Jesus loved

  1320. most.

  1321. Did Jesus

  1322. hear competition

  1323. based in

  1324. fear that

  1325. Jesus would

  1326. love the

  1327. beloved

  1328. John more

  1329. than him?

  1330. Did Jesus

  1331. hear resentment

  1332. because Peter

  1333. thought Jesus

  1334. might not ask

  1335. his beloved

  1336. disciple to

  1337. sacrifice as

  1338. much as he

  1339. just said he

  1340. would be asking

  1341. Peter to

  1342. sacrifice?

  1343. Jesus'

  1344. answer to

  1345. Peter is

  1346. very,

  1347. very clear.

  1348. Verse 22,

  1349. you,

  1350. and it's

  1351. a present

  1352. tense,

  1353. you,

  1354. keep on

  1355. following

  1356. me.

  1357. Jesus

  1358. apparently

  1359. hears

  1360. pretty blunt

  1361. with Peter.

  1362. He said,

  1363. Peter,

  1364. this really

  1365. isn't your

  1366. concern.

  1367. Even stronger,

  1368. Peter,

  1369. this isn't

  1370. even your

  1371. business.

  1372. What you

  1373. need to

  1374. do is

  1375. keep on

  1376. following

  1377. me.

  1378. You

  1379. keep your

  1380. eyes on

  1381. me.

  1382. Take your

  1383. lead and

  1384. shape from

  1385. me and

  1386. not comparatively

  1387. what I'm

  1388. asking others

  1389. to do or

  1390. not do and

  1391. not competitively

  1392. I'm asking

  1393. you to do

  1394. more than

  1395. them.

  1396. Don't do

  1397. that,

  1398. Peter.

  1399. Keep your

  1400. eyes on

  1401. me.

  1402. So do you

  1403. see how that

  1404. makes the

  1405. impossible

  1406. possible that

  1407. Peter would

  1408. step up

  1409. eventually and

  1410. sacrifice his

  1411. life for

  1412. Jesus.

  1413. And it

  1414. then also

  1415. makes it

  1416. possible,

  1417. this thing

  1418. that we

  1419. normally

  1420. devolve to,

  1421. competition and

  1422. comparison,

  1423. it makes it

  1424. impossible because

  1425. if we're just

  1426. keeping our

  1427. eyes on

  1428. Jesus,

  1429. then there's

  1430. just Jesus

  1431. and me,

  1432. regardless of

  1433. what Jesus

  1434. does with

  1435. others.

  1436. My friends,

  1437. if only we

  1438. would hate

  1439. these words

  1440. of Jesus.

  1441. if only we

  1442. would so

  1443. identify with

  1444. Jesus and

  1445. be so

  1446. shaped by

  1447. him and

  1448. so committed

  1449. to loving,

  1450. obeying and

  1451. following him,

  1452. then we

  1453. will see

  1454. incredible

  1455. displays of

  1456. self-sacrifice

  1457. and trust in

  1458. our church

  1459. family or

  1460. otherwise known

  1461. now as a

  1462. resurrection

  1463. community.

  1464. if only we

  1465. would so

  1466. identify with

  1467. Jesus and

  1468. be so

  1469. shaped by

  1470. him,

  1471. so committed

  1472. to loving,

  1473. obeying and

  1474. following him,

  1475. then we

  1476. will never

  1477. see competition

  1478. or resentment

  1479. in ministry

  1480. matters within

  1481. our church

  1482. family.

  1483. And how

  1484. refreshing would

  1485. that be?

  1486. All would

  1487. be tending

  1488. and feeding

  1489. the sheep.

  1490. All of that

  1491. would be done

  1492. for the good

  1493. of the sheep

  1494. and ultimately

  1495. for the glory

  1496. of the shepherd.

  1497. Friends,

  1498. very simple

  1499. question as

  1500. we finish

  1501. John and

  1502. as we move

  1503. into this,

  1504. as we sense

  1505. our part in

  1506. this final

  1507. phase of

  1508. God's

  1509. operation

  1510. salvation.

  1511. What are

  1512. you waiting

  1513. for?

  1514. What could

  1515. hold you

  1516. back?

  1517. Be the

  1518. shepherd Jesus

  1519. urges you

  1520. to be.

  1521. Feed his

  1522. sheep with

  1523. selflessness,

  1524. tenderness,

  1525. and with

  1526. the

  1527. commitment

  1528. of

  1529. Jesus

  1530. himself.

  1531. And do

  1532. it all

  1533. for the

  1534. glory of

  1535. God.

  1536. Thank you

  1537. very much

  1538. for listening

  1539. to me this

  1540. morning.

  1541. Thank you.

  1542. Thank you.

  1543. Thank you.

  1544. Thank you.

  1545. Thank you.

  1546. Thank you.

  1547. Thank you.
