  1. Good morning everyone. Please turn with me to Revelation chapter 2.

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  2. And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write,

  3. the words of the first and the last who died and came to life.

  4. I know your tribulation and your poverty, but you are rich.

  5. And the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.

  6. Do not fear what you are about to suffer.

  7. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison that you may be tested.

  8. And for 10 days you will have tribulation.

  9. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.

  10. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  11. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.

  12. Well, good morning everyone.

  13. In my first semester at uni, while trying to find my place in a new city,

  14. I moved from Tamworth to Newcastle trying to make new friends.

  15. I was studying PE teaching, and I had to give a lesson in front of my peers on sexual health.

  16. Now, I can't really remember what I said, but I remember in the feedback time afterward,

  17. the lecturer challenged me in front of everyone.

  18. Are you a Christian?

  19. Where in the Bible does it say you shouldn't have sex before marriage?

  20. I was stunned into silence.

  21. There was a strong feeling in that moment.

  22. It was more than embarrassment.

  23. The lecturer had the authority in that situation,

  24. and everyone in the room understood the subtext going on.

  25. He wasn't just claiming I was factually incorrect.

  26. He was saying something deeper than that.

  27. He was saying I was a fool for my view on sex before marriage,

  28. and I was wrong to even mention it to other people.

  29. In that moment, I felt shame.

  30. I don't fully belong.

  31. For me, the first and second year of university,

  32. I wrestled trying to decide, is Christianity worth it?

  33. Then after uni, after not getting a PE job straight away,

  34. my first job was as a high school SRE or scripture teacher.

  35. Now, the school tried to give SRE a proper classroom

  36. and a proper place in the timetable,

  37. but there seemed to be a common understanding among the students

  38. that SRE just wasn't a real subject.

  39. Normal classroom rules can be pushed to the limit.

  40. The amount of times I ask myself, is this worth it?

  41. I lost count by the last bell on Monday, usually.

  42. A little side plug here, SRE is excellent.

  43. I highly recommend it if you have the opportunity.

  44. Talk to me any time.

  45. But they're just two examples for me, for my story so far.

  46. It would be fascinating to hear how each one of us have been forced

  47. to ask yourself the question, is Christianity worth it?

  48. Is it worth the loss and the cost?

  49. What have you had to give up or lose simply because you're a Christian?

  50. It could be money, it could be time.

  51. What relationships have been strained, not by your arrogance,

  52. but because you've decided to side with Christ?

  53. What hardship could you have easily avoided?

  54. All you had to do was go with the flow of what everyone else did.

  55. We're all faced with this question, is it worth it?

  56. As we come to the letter to Smyrna, which is about severe persecution,

  57. we shouldn't think this doesn't apply to us here in Australia today

  58. for at least two reasons.

  59. Firstly, there is no guarantee that we will continue to be safe

  60. in Australia going forward.

  61. And secondly, the cost you and I are faced with every day at school,

  62. at uni, with colleagues, with our sporting teams and friends and family.

  63. We can be tempted to distance ourselves from Christ bit by bit by bit.

  64. So what's going to motivate us to stand with Christ and walk into trouble

  65. and not away from it?

  66. We've got to hear what Christ has to say to Smyrna.

  67. So Smyrna competed with Ephesus for the title of the greatest city of Asia.

  68. It too was a centre for trade and wealth.

  69. It too was full of worship to the gods.

  70. The Roman gods.

  71. The most defining feature of Smyrna was that it had been totally destroyed

  72. about 600 years before Christ.

  73. And it laid in ruins for 300 years before it was raised again.

  74. And unlike most cities, it was carefully designed.

  75. And so it had this order and beauty to it.

  76. And today it still stands.

  77. It's Isma, the second largest city in Turkey.

  78. To live in Smyrna was to belong to the glorious resurrected city

  79. that boasted of its allegiance to the emperor.

  80. And there in the midst of this little, of this city is this little local church,

  81. a lampstand.

  82. This lampstand, it's a picture of every Christian being a priest.

  83. You might be familiar with the phrase, the priesthood of all believers.

  84. To be priest is to be totally dedicated to the service of Christ.

  85. Your allegiance is totally to him.

  86. And your role is to represent him to the rest of the world.

  87. What will it mean to be Christ's lampstand in Smyrna?

  88. The words of the first and the last who died and came to life.

  89. Into this resurrected city speaks one who also died and came to life.

  90. These words echo the description of the Lord in chapter 1,

  91. as do all the introductions to the seven letters.

  92. He is the first and the last, the alpha and the omega,

  93. and everything in between.

  94. He is the eternal one who chose to die for his church

  95. and who came back to life and now holds the keys of death and hell.

  96. Church in Smyrna, Christians today, to which will you belong?

  97. The life and glory of the city you live in?

  98. Or the life and glory of the risen Lord Jesus?

  99. This letter is the briefest letter.

  100. And because it's brief, it gives a solemn air to it.

  101. And when you compare this letter to the Ephesians,

  102. something appears to be missing.

  103. The Ephesians are praised for their hard work,

  104. their concern for truth, their endurance.

  105. But to those in Smyrna, he says,

  106. I know your tribulation and your poverty, but you are rich.

  107. And the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not,

  108. but are a synagogue of Satan.

  109. Outwardly, all this church has going for it is pain and loss.

  110. Is their suffering a divine punishment for their lack of devotion to Christ?

  111. Doesn't that thought cross your mind when hard times hit you?

  112. But that doesn't fit here.

  113. There's no explicit indictment from Christ.

  114. No hint of needing to repent.

  115. And no warning if they don't change.

  116. Instead, Christ says, you are rich.

  117. Materially suffering loss, but spiritually rich.

  118. In chapter 1, verse 9, John introduces his letter to all Christians saying,

  119. I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom

  120. and the patient endurance that are in Jesus.

  121. Tribulation means great trouble or suffering,

  122. and it is the new normal for every Christian.

  123. Aligning yourself to Christ when the world wants to live without Christ

  124. is going to mean trouble.

  125. Tribulation isn't a mark of God's punishment.

  126. It's the mark of faithfulness.

  127. It's not the experience of some Christians.

  128. It is par for the course.

  129. It's the new normal.

  130. We don't experience it in equal measure, of course.

  131. For those in Smyrna,

  132. the source of their trouble is the slanderous accusations of the Jews

  133. who claim to worship God

  134. and claim that the Christians are evil.

  135. All the while, these Jews reject Christ.

  136. Lying and murdering like Satan.

  137. Christianity had no legal standing,

  138. and so it made it easy for Jews and others to take advantage of them.

  139. The Roman Empire was very tolerant of all religions,

  140. but it was dangerous to believe that only one God exists and rules over all.

  141. And when the Roman Emperor himself started to be worshipped as a god,

  142. to not worship him was seen as treason.

  143. By following Christ,

  144. they no longer belonged to their community.

  145. Legally, they had no grounds for rights or freedoms.

  146. And perhaps even their own family members,

  147. their Jewish family members,

  148. would drag them into court,

  149. publicly slandering them to the loss of their property

  150. or their reputation,

  151. even their life.

  152. This is heavy stuff, isn't it?

  153. Was it worth it?

  154. Do you feel the pressure,

  155. the threat to be tolerant of all opinions

  156. and all people's choices?

  157. Perhaps we feel it most

  158. with those closest to us,

  159. the relationships we hold dear,

  160. the respect we crave.

  161. Into this pressure,

  162. Christ says,

  163. I know your pain.

  164. More than just acknowledging it,

  165. our Lord is speaking as having gone ahead of us,

  166. slandered as evil

  167. only because he was faithful to his father.

  168. He perfectly reflected his father's character.

  169. And it resulted in death.

  170. Christ says,

  171. I know your pain.

  172. And at this point,

  173. I want Christ to say,

  174. don't worry,

  175. your trouble will be over tomorrow.

  176. But instead of taking the trouble away,

  177. he gives us strength to move into the pain

  178. by giving us a bigger perspective

  179. to what's actually going on

  180. behind what the eye can see.

  181. Look at verse 10.

  182. Do not fear what you're about to suffer.

  183. Behold,

  184. the devil is about to throw some of you into prison

  185. that you may be tested.

  186. And for 10 days,

  187. you will have tribulation.

  188. Be faithful unto death

  189. and I will give you the crown of life.

  190. Behind the slander of people

  191. is the devil himself,

  192. whose name means slanderer or accuser.

  193. He is the one

  194. who will bring such allegations

  195. and injustice and loss.

  196. Some of you will go into prison.

  197. Some of you will even be killed.

  198. Christ doesn't offer them a comfortable life.

  199. Whoever wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus

  200. will be persecuted.

  201. And this isn't for a short time.

  202. 10 days,

  203. 10 represents an extended period

  204. of time.

  205. What will empower them

  206. to move into the trouble?

  207. Not in a cavalier bring on the pain way,

  208. but remaining steadfast.

  209. They're told,

  210. we're told there's a purpose to it all.

  211. The devil will do this to test you.

  212. The implication here

  213. is that you will pass the test.

  214. This sounds a lot like the story of Job.

  215. Job is praised as faithful

  216. by the Lord himself.

  217. And Satan wants to test his faith,

  218. accusing Job

  219. that he only serves the Lord

  220. because of all the earthly comfort

  221. that God provides him.

  222. Take it away

  223. and Job will curse you to your face.

  224. All his children killed,

  225. financially ruined and covered in sores from head to foot.

  226. No guarantee of a better day tomorrow.

  227. And the story ends with Job

  228. counting the Lord as worth it,

  229. as all he needs.

  230. Times of testing

  231. shows that for God's sake alone,

  232. not the extra stuff he gives,

  233. for his sake alone,

  234. it is worth worshipping him.

  235. And beyond Satan,

  236. there is the eternal judge

  237. and life giver.

  238. Trouble is certain,

  239. but just as certain is

  240. it's limited.

  241. There will be

  242. an eleventh day,

  243. so to speak.

  244. Most importantly,

  245. remember who's speaking.

  246. The one who died himself

  247. and who came alive.

  248. He holds the keys of death and hell

  249. and he guarantees

  250. resurrection for those who belong to him.

  251. Be faithful unto death

  252. and I will give you the crown

  253. of life.

  254. He has the authority

  255. to give life.

  256. After the cross

  257. comes the crown.

  258. People in this world

  259. chase after the glory

  260. of a crown

  261. like in the Olympic Games

  262. of the Roman Empire,

  263. a wreath of flowers,

  264. a garland around the head,

  265. the praise of the world

  266. and wealth,

  267. but it doesn't last.

  268. Christ offers

  269. an enduring crown,

  270. eternal life

  271. in his kingdom.

  272. This is not

  273. a special reward

  274. on top of your salvation.

  275. This promise

  276. is for every person

  277. who counts Christ

  278. as worthy

  279. to endure trouble for,

  280. which is every

  281. genuine Christian.

  282. To conquer

  283. is John's way

  284. of talking about faith.

  285. When a person

  286. is tempted

  287. to end the pain

  288. of being a Christian

  289. by going with the flow

  290. of the world,

  291. what does that person

  292. need to do

  293. to stick with Christ?

  294. We need to listen

  295. to Christ's words

  296. and believe him

  297. more than the world.

  298. Trust

  299. that the eternal

  300. judgment of the Lord

  301. is the only judgment

  302. that ultimately matters.

  303. It is judgment

  304. that is true.

  305. Trust

  306. that true

  307. life and glory

  308. is only

  309. found

  310. in the resurrected

  311. Christ,

  312. not in the world.

  313. How we conquer

  314. is to use

  315. our ears

  316. to listen

  317. and believe

  318. and respond

  319. to what Christ

  320. says to us.

  321. and Christ

  322. has an amazing

  323. promise

  324. for us.

  325. The one

  326. who conquers

  327. will not

  328. be hurt

  329. by the second

  330. death.

  331. The second

  332. death

  333. is a picture

  334. in Revelation 20

  335. for the judgment

  336. of God,

  337. the lake

  338. of fire

  339. where Satan

  340. and everyone

  341. else who

  342. oppose Christ

  343. will be thrown.

  344. Eternal

  345. loss

  346. of the life

  347. giving presence

  348. of God,

  349. hell.

  350. Brothers

  351. and sisters,

  352. in times

  353. of trial,

  354. we need

  355. to look

  356. beyond the

  357. loss

  358. and pain.

  359. When you

  360. stand before

  361. the Lord

  362. at judgment,

  363. which each

  364. of us has

  365. to,

  366. you will

  367. have zero

  368. reason

  369. to be

  370. afraid.

  371. You can

  372. lift your

  373. head

  374. assured

  375. that you

  376. have

  377. entrusted

  378. your

  379. life

  380. to the

  381. resurrected

  382. one,

  383. the judge

  384. of all

  385. the earth.

  386. You

  387. already

  388. know

  389. the real

  390. judge's

  391. judgment

  392. of you.

  393. The wording

  394. here is

  395. certainly

  396. not.

  397. You

  398. will

  399. certainly

  400. not

  401. be hurt

  402. by the

  403. eternal

  404. judgment.

  405. You

  406. will have

  407. the crown

  408. of life.

  409. Do you

  410. hear the

  411. assurance?

  412. As

  413. Marty told

  414. the story

  415. in his

  416. intro,

  417. sitting in

  418. the congregation

  419. at Smyrna,

  420. where Revelation

  421. was first read,

  422. could have sat

  423. this young

  424. man,

  425. Polycarp.

  426. he became

  427. bishop,

  428. and in

  429. his old

  430. age,

  431. arrested,

  432. taken to

  433. the public

  434. arena,

  435. and he

  436. was ordered

  437. to offer

  438. incense to

  439. Caesar as

  440. Lord.

  441. Before being

  442. burnt,

  443. he said

  444. those words,

  445. let me repeat

  446. them,

  447. eighty and

  448. six years

  449. have I

  450. served

  451. Christ,

  452. and he

  453. has done

  454. me no

  455. wrong.

  456. How then

  457. can I

  458. blaspheme

  459. my king

  460. who saved

  461. me?

  462. He was

  463. looking

  464. beyond

  465. that

  466. moment.

  467. He knew

  468. the crown

  469. of life

  470. that was

  471. his by

  472. grace

  473. through

  474. the blood

  475. of Christ.

  476. He was

  477. more scared,

  478. he was

  479. more assured

  480. that the

  481. judgment

  482. of Christ

  483. is what

  484. counts,

  485. not what

  486. the public

  487. thinks,

  488. not even

  489. the pain.

  490. This

  491. perspective

  492. turns loss

  493. and pain

  494. and slander

  495. of other

  496. people

  497. upside

  498. down.

  499. Or more

  500. accurately,

  501. it turns

  502. it the

  503. right way

  504. up.

  505. Look at

  506. what's

  507. going on.

  508. Whatever

  509. loss you

  510. face,

  511. while

  512. remaining

  513. devoted

  514. to the

  515. Lord,

  516. you are

  517. declaring

  518. to people

  519. around you

  520. and to

  521. the

  522. spiritual

  523. realities,

  524. Christ

  525. is worth

  526. it.

  527. Christ

  528. is my

  529. life.

  530. Not the

  531. things he

  532. gives me,

  533. not the

  534. things you

  535. can offer

  536. me,

  537. Christ

  538. himself

  539. is my

  540. life.

  541. The

  542. church in

  543. Ephesus

  544. had all

  545. the external

  546. marks of

  547. a healthy

  548. church,

  549. but in

  550. their heart

  551. they'd lost

  552. their passionate

  553. devotion to

  554. the Lord

  555. who died

  556. for them.

  557. And here's

  558. Smyrna,

  559. looking ahead,

  560. and all

  561. they see

  562. is loss

  563. and pain,

  564. and all

  565. they get

  566. for it

  567. is Christ.

  568. And they

  569. decide

  570. worth it.

  571. Is there

  572. a greater

  573. expression of

  574. devotion than

  575. that?

  576. Is there

  577. a brighter

  578. light and

  579. witness to

  580. the truth

  581. than

  582. faithfulness

  583. in the face

  584. of suffering

  585. and loss?

  586. is there

  587. a greater

  588. word of

  589. praise

  590. Christ

  591. could

  592. give

  593. them

  594. than

  595. on the

  596. last

  597. day

  598. at

  599. judgment?

  600. Well

  601. done,

  602. good and

  603. faithful

  604. servant.

  605. Having

  606. lost

  607. everything

  608. else,

  609. but being

  610. close to

  611. the Lord,

  612. they are

  613. rich.

  614. Charles

  615. Spurgeon

  616. said it

  617. better than

  618. I can,

  619. for the

  620. Christian,

  621. losses

  622. enrich him,

  623. sickness

  624. is his

  625. medicine,

  626. reproach

  627. is his

  628. honour,

  629. death

  630. is his

  631. gain.

  632. This can

  633. only be

  634. true of

  635. you if

  636. you believe

  637. in your

  638. heart,

  639. Christ

  640. is worth

  641. it.

  642. friends,

  643. as we

  644. look ahead

  645. to our

  646. immediate

  647. future,

  648. as a

  649. church

  650. family

  651. and as

  652. individuals,

  653. trouble

  654. and loss

  655. and not

  656. belonging in

  657. this world

  658. is before

  659. us.

  660. But we

  661. need to

  662. look beyond

  663. and see

  664. him who

  665. has gone

  666. ahead of

  667. us,

  668. who has

  669. died in

  670. our place

  671. and has

  672. come to

  673. life.

  674. Don't be

  675. afraid.

  676. Be faithful

  677. unto death

  678. and I

  679. will give

  680. you the

  681. crown of

  682. life.

  683. What a

  684. light for

  685. Christ in

  686. this dark

  687. world we

  688. will be if

  689. when trouble

  690. comes we

  691. can say

  692. Christ is

  693. worth it.

  694. Will you

  695. pray with me

  696. to finish?

  697. Let's pray.

  698. Father, you

  699. know our

  700. hearts and

  701. how we

  702. struggle to

  703. believe that

  704. what this

  705. world offers

  706. us isn't

  707. better than

  708. what you

  709. offer us.

  710. Forgive us

  711. Lord for

  712. this.

  713. Thank you

  714. that it's

  715. by your

  716. blood alone

  717. that we

  718. stand

  719. secure

  720. knowing that

  721. judgment has

  722. already passed

  723. on Christ

  724. and that

  725. by grace

  726. alone we

  727. get to

  728. share in

  729. the crown

  730. of life.

  731. Lord, I

  732. pray for us

  733. as a church

  734. that we

  735. wouldn't just

  736. go with the

  737. flow of

  738. this world

  739. that you

  740. would help

  741. us to

  742. see Christ

  743. in all his

  744. truth and

  745. beauty and

  746. count having

  747. him as

  748. worth it.

  749. Lord, give

  750. us ears to

  751. hear you.

  752. Make us

  753. rich.

  754. In Jesus'

  755. name.

  756. Amen.
