  1. Good morning.

  2. Right, we're reading from Proverbs chapter 5.

    Proverbs 5 chapter mention

  3. My son, be attentive to my wisdom.

  4. Incline your ear to my understanding, that you may keep discretion and your lips may guard knowledge.

  5. For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil.

  6. But in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.

  7. Her feet go down to death, her steps follow the path to shield.

  8. She does not ponder the path of life, her ways wander, and she does not know it.

  9. And now, O sons, listen to me, and do not depart from the words of my mouth.

  10. Keep your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house.

  11. Lest you give your honour to her, and your years to us.

  12. Lest strangers fill your hands.

  13. And your labours go to the house of a foreigner.

  14. And at the end of your life you groan, when your flesh and body are consumed.

  15. And you say, how I hated discipline.

  16. And my heart despised reproof.

  17. I did not listen to the voice of my teachers, or incline my ear to my instructors.

  18. I am at the brink of utter ruin, in the assembled congregation.

  19. Drink water from your own cistern, flowing water from your own well.

  20. Should your springs be scattered abroad, streams of water in the streets?

  21. Let them be for yourself alone, and not for strangers with you.

  22. Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth.

  23. A lovely dear, a graceful doe.

  24. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight.

  25. Be intoxicated always in her love.

  26. Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman,

  27. and embrace the bosom of an adulteress?

  28. For a man's ways are before the eyes of the Lord,

  29. and he ponders all his paths.

  30. The iniquities of the wicked ensnare him,

  31. and he is held fast in the cords of his sin.

  32. He dies for lack of discipline, and because of his great folly,

  33. he is led astray.

  34. To start with, I just want to share a picture with you

  35. that I found on the internet while I was doing some research for this.

  36. Joel Ferguson's going to bring it up,

  37. and it's a picture that describes Proverbs along with some other books.

  38. Look, obviously it's not an accurate representation.

  39. It's a bit of a tongue-in-cheek.

  40. But I guess this is probably, you know, to be honest,

  41. having a go at the other books about how they're all going,

  42. life is meaningless, it's worthless, et cetera.

  43. I actually think in reality Proverbs should look a little bit different

  44. to this.

  45. So I've had a crack at trying to fix up this photo for us.

  46. This is probably a little bit more what I think Proverbs should look like.

  47. But the reason I think Proverbs should look like this is because

  48. that Proverbs is about a book that is about contrasting two ways

  49. to live your life.

  50. And as you read through the book of Proverbs,

  51. you really do get this sense of, on the one hand,

  52. if you embrace wisdom, then that's good.

  53. Life will go well for you.

  54. But on the other hand, if you embrace folly,

  55. then life is going to go really bad,

  56. and there'll be a lot of terrible consequences.

  57. And Martin last week spoke about two paths to take in your life,

  58. essentially the same thing.

  59. One is the wisdom path, the life that leads to happiness and joy,

  60. and the other is folly that leads to pain and death and destruction.

  61. Another way that you would have heard it is Wilco and Marty both talked

  62. about the fact that wisdom and folly are like two women,

  63. so lady wisdom and lady folly.

  64. And up until this point, Solomon's coming,

  65. talking about the concept of wisdom, this idea of wisdom,

  66. that, you know, you can get wisdom to chase after wisdom.

  67. The wisdom of God is fear of the Lord.

  68. But it's still these two choices that we're given in this concept.

  69. Well, in today's passage, the rubber really hits the road.

  70. Solomon goes, okay, that's the concept.

  71. You've heard the concept of what wisdom is.

  72. Now let's get to the practicals.

  73. Let's talk about adultery.

  74. It's a little bit like, you know,

  75. he could have eased us into it and said, I don't know, you know,

  76. wisdom is brushing your teeth and folly is not flossing.

  77. What's an Old Testament example?

  78. Maybe like shear your sheep in the summer and not in the winter.

  79. I don't know.

  80. But something like that to kind of get up to it.

  81. But he doesn't waste breath.

  82. He goes, okay, let's tackle adultery.

  83. And on the one hand, he says, adultery is folly.

  84. And faithfulness is wisdom.

  85. And I've been actually super lucky with the kids talk this morning

  86. because Jen did a great job of summarising that for us.

  87. She messaged me earlier in the week and said, you know,

  88. what are we going to be talking about?

  89. And I said, oh, adultery.

  90. So good luck making that into a kids talk.

  91. But she's done a great job.

  92. But those are the two options.

  93. Wisdom is faithfulness and folly is adultery.

  94. And then instead of looking at this as two ways, two paths to go down or two women,

  95. I'm going to take a slightly different approach.

  96. I'm going to say that there are two ways to quench your thirst.

  97. And that's the question I'm going to be asking from here is,

  98. what choice will you make to quench your thirst?

  99. Now, something that the chapter here has assumed when Solomon wrote this

  100. is that we should be looking for satisfaction or that we will want

  101. to look for satisfaction in relationships, in sexual relationships.

  102. It's who we are.

  103. Humans are made that way.

  104. We're wired that way.

  105. We're created for relationships with each other.

  106. We desire to be loved, to be valued at our very core,

  107. to be significant to someone else.

  108. And so the question I'm going to be asking is,

  109. where will you look to have that thirst quenched?

  110. Now, in the immediate sense, this passage presents us with two options.

  111. The first one is that we can quench our thirst through the drink of honey and oil.

  112. The honey and oil of adultery or the second option is that we can quench our thirst

  113. in the water of our marriage relationships.

  114. Now, I'm going to recognise here that I'm talking to a large group of people,

  115. probably who more than two-thirds aren't married.

  116. And this passage is heavily geared towards married people.

  117. So if you aren't married, then please don't tune out.

  118. Please don't turn off and go, oh, look, this isn't for me.

  119. I think the points I'm going to be making along here are going to be helpful,

  120. even if the applications aren't necessarily focused on you.

  121. So, yeah, stick with me and hopefully you'll get something out of it at the end.

  122. But let's tackle the first option.

  123. The first option to quench our thirst is the silky smooth drink of honey and oil.

  124. Adultery.

  125. And what is the answer that Solomon gives us here to that?

  126. Folly, folly, absolute folly.

  127. Let's take a look at verse 3.

  128. If you've got your Bible open, it's Proverbs chapter 5, verse 3.

    Proverbs 5:3

  129. For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey,

  130. and her speech is smooth than oil.

  131. But in the end, she is bitter as wormwood,

  132. sharp as a two-edged sword.

  133. Her feet go down to death.

  134. Her steps follow the path to Sheol, to the grave, essentially.

  135. She does not ponder the path of life.

  136. Her ways wander and she does not know it.

  137. See, Solomon doesn't mince words here.

  138. He says,

  139. Adultery, the act of breaking your vow with your spouse

  140. and sleeping with someone else who is not that person,

  141. is adultery.

  142. It's folly.

  143. It is stupidity.

  144. But that's the thing about adultery, isn't it?

  145. The attraction is there.

  146. That's the thing with adultery.

  147. It's not like we can look at this drink and see,

  148. you know, there's little chunks floating around in it

  149. and it smells like vomit.

  150. It's not like that.

  151. It's attractive.

  152. It's aromatic.

  153. It smells good.

  154. It's smooth.

  155. It's silky.

  156. And that's, you know,

  157. the analogy of the woman that Proverbs uses here

  158. is actually very helpful.

  159. The woman's lips drip with honey.

  160. It looks good.

  161. But the reality is that it is bitter as wormwood,

  162. as bitter as gall.

  163. It's disgusting.

  164. It's rancid.

  165. It's not smooth as it looks.

  166. It's razor sharp.

  167. You know, we think that this will quench our thirst,

  168. but it actually leaves us gasping for something else.

  169. It gets stuck in our throat and it chokes us up.

  170. You see, adultery is the drink that leads to death.

  171. Now, Joel's going to play a song for us here in a second.

  172. And it's a song that's based on these exact verses, actually,

  173. by a Christian rapper called Lecrae.

  174. Now, as soon as I say that I'm about to play Christian rap,

  175. I recognise I'm alienating anyone over the age of 35

  176. and anyone under the age of 25.

  177. And I've just insulted anyone who is outside of those age ranges

  178. and does enjoy Christian rap.

  179. But the point of this is try not to pay attention

  180. to the style of the music.

  181. If you like it, great.

  182. If you don't, then what I want you to do is try

  183. and focus on the words.

  184. There'll be slides that have the words coming up.

  185. And he does move through them pretty quick.

  186. But I think this really accurately portrays to us

  187. the mirage of adultery.

  188. So Joel's going to hopefully play that for us now.

  189. Kinda.

  190. Cada.

  191. Br multooky.

  192. Bella.

  193. Bella.

  194. Bella.

  195. Bella.

  196. Bella.

  197. Kill out, kill out

  198. I know it's gon' kill me, but I just can't let it go

  199. And the taste of appeal has got a grip upon my soul

  200. These honey dip lies mesmerize me

  201. Cry's got its crooked fingers twisting all inside me

  202. Fools walk the path I'm on, never to be seen again

  203. Sipping on seduction while we eating on some secret sins

  204. Says a whisper in my ear

  205. And I know I should be over this, but I ain't seeing clear

  206. And I ain't leaving here, unless somebody save me

  207. Walk into my grave, letting evilness enslave me

  208. Evil looks so lovely, covered in her lace of lies

  209. And a silky smooth seduction just manipulates my mind

  210. Her fabric of fabrication is fueling my fascination

  211. While I'm intoxicated, she starts her assassination

  212. Losing all my honor and my years to the merciless

  213. Giving all my life away, but I'm just so immersed in this

  214. Baby, that's a reason

  215. Yeah, you're moving hard a little bit

  216. Yeah, I'm only here for your benefit

  217. I'm here, I'm here, I'm here, I'm here

  218. Baby, that's a reason

  219. You're moving hard a little bit

  220. Yeah, I'm here, I'm here

  221. You're moving hard a little bit

  222. Yeah, I'm here

  223. Hold your eyes and let's get lost tonight

  224. Yeah, I'm here, I'm here

  225. You're moving hard, you'll see my mind

  226. Yeah, I'm here

  227. Her feet go down the drift

  228. So don't let her consume you

  229. Even though her heart is black

  230. Her exterior is beautiful

  231. She'll take your life away

  232. And strip away your joy

  233. Pretend that she don't build you up

  234. Or she just gon' destroy you

  235. My friends fell low

  236. When they were so high

  237. Got me running scared of myself

  238. No lie, and I know I'm gon' die

  239. I try a cold turkey

  240. But when I'm feeling worthy

  241. Satan's sure I'm trying to murder me

  242. I'm doing myself dirty

  243. Flirting with what's perverted

  244. I should follow the word

  245. But I guess I'd rather be murdered

  246. Excuse me, I mean martyr

  247. Cause I'm killing myself

  248. My sin conceived a baby

  249. Your name or death

  250. Breath, take it

  251. She take my breath away

  252. Replaces it with poison

  253. And I'm so swept away

  254. I need some bread today

  255. Hope I wake up before they start my wake up

  256. Somebody make me break up

  257. I'm dating her

  258. Girl, you're just a reason

  259. You're not leaving how to live it

  260. You're not

  261. I'm only here for your benefit

  262. I'm here every place

  263. I'm on a land

  264. Killer

  265. Everything just as innocent

  266. Killer

  267. You're not leaving how to live it

  268. Killer

  269. Hold your eyes and ask your life tonight

  270. Can't be a rest

  271. You're still in my life

  272. Killer

  273. How good are those words?

  274. But you can see the feeling in those words

  275. Adultery

  276. It destroys relationships

  277. It destroys marriages

  278. It destroys churches

  279. It seems so obvious

  280. Don't do it

  281. Verse 9 to 14

  282. It actually warns us of the consequences

  283. If you've got your Bible

  284. Have a look at verse 9

  285. Lest you give your honour to others

  286. And your years to the merciless

  287. Lest strangers take their fill of your strength

  288. And your labours go to the house of a foreigner

  289. And at the end of your life

  290. You groan when your flesh and body are consumed

  291. And you say

  292. How I hated discipline

  293. And my heart despised reproof

  294. I did not listen to the voice of my teachers

  295. Or incline my ear to their understanding

  296. Sorry

  297. Ear to my instructors

  298. And then verse 14 is the verse I think that totally sums it up

  299. The consequences

  300. I am at the brink of utter ruin

  301. In the assembled congregation

  302. And you see that's the warning that we're given

  303. And we know that it's bad for us

  304. But it still happens doesn't it?

  305. You know it's not just enough to say

  306. Don't commit adultery

  307. Because if that was the case

  308. No Christian would ever have an affair

  309. Either men or women

  310. Obviously this isn't

  311. It often talks about

  312. Solomon's talking to a son

  313. But it can be men or women

  314. But if it was that simple

  315. No one would ever do it

  316. You see adultery

  317. Isn't about a lack of knowledge

  318. Folly is not about coming about

  319. Because of a lack of knowledge

  320. It's not like

  321. I was trying to think of some words

  322. That you know

  323. Could go in place of folly

  324. And I started thinking about

  325. Maybe like

  326. Dumb or idiot

  327. Or that type of thing

  328. But they all kind of imply that I'm somehow

  329. Logically deficient

  330. That I just don't know enough

  331. But you know if I ask my non-Christian friends

  332. They all know that adultery is bad

  333. You know it's a consensus that cheating is not a good thing

  334. You see folly is not about knowing what is the right thing

  335. Or knowing what is the wrong thing

  336. Folly is about knowing the right thing

  337. But doing the wrong thing anyway

  338. You see adultery doesn't come because of being stupid

  339. It comes about because of a lack of discipline

  340. To act on what we know is right

  341. Verse 1 and 2

  342. When Solomon is talking to his son

  343. He says this

  344. He says

  345. My son be attentive to my wisdom

  346. Incline your ear to my understanding

  347. That you may keep discretion

  348. And your lips may guard knowledge

  349. Verse 2

  350. That you may keep discretion

  351. You know not that you'll get it

  352. And then once you've got it you'll have it forever

  353. You need to work to keep it

  354. That your lips may guard knowledge

  355. You know what does the word guard imply

  356. It implies that it can be lost

  357. It can be stolen

  358. It can be taken away

  359. Verse 7

  360. Do not depart from the words of my mouth

  361. This is something that we can walk away from

  362. We can walk away from wisdom

  363. And you know it's really ironic

  364. That the best example that we have

  365. Of someone who's done that

  366. Not just even in the Bible

  367. Probably out of everyone I can think of

  368. Is Solomon himself

  369. He had 700 wives and 300 concubines

  370. And it's kind of like you know

  371. How far could you possibly depart

  372. From what he wrote himself

  373. It's really ridiculous

  374. But it's not about staying out

  375. And not being able to resist the temptation

  376. When it's in front of you

  377. It's not about when you're in the dark room

  378. With that person

  379. Saying no to them then

  380. It's about putting in place the discipline

  381. So you never even get to that place

  382. The way to stay out of adultery

  383. Verse 8

  384. If you have a look at verse 8

  385. Keep your way far from her

  386. And do not go near the door of her house

  387. See this is saying

  388. Don't even get into the situation

  389. Put in safeguards

  390. Tell friends

  391. Get them to challenge you

  392. If you know something could be an issue

  393. If you can see something coming

  394. If in your mind you know that you're starting to get it

  395. You know too close to someone

  396. Who is not your husband or wife

  397. If you're married

  398. Then stop then

  399. Now I had a bit of a talk to my wife about this

  400. Alyssa

  401. About you know what are some of the things that you can see as warning signs for women

  402. If women if you're starting to get emotionally invested

  403. In someone who is not your husband

  404. Then cut it off there and then

  405. If you find yourself dressing to get the attention of another man

  406. Maybe you're not doing it really actively and consciously

  407. But maybe subconsciously

  408. Then get help then

  409. Don't allow it to get to the point where you become so invested that it consumes your mind

  410. You know if you're instant messaging someone

  411. Facebook, Instagram, whatever it might be

  412. And you're starting to share some intimate personal things

  413. Then get help, be disciplined

  414. Remember the wisdom in these verses

  415. His feet go down to death

  416. Don't let him consume you

  417. His heart is black but the exterior is beautiful

  418. Now married guys

  419. Unfortunately I know my own heart

  420. I didn't have to ask my wife for these ones

  421. But if you find yourself looking

  422. For the attention of a woman who is not your wife

  423. You know you're looking for ways to be around that person

  424. And your thoughts go back to her

  425. And you know you think about being around them

  426. If you try and be a little bit more funny than you normally would

  427. When you're around that person

  428. Then take action

  429. Don't let it get any further

  430. Tell someone that you trust

  431. Let them help you to be accountable

  432. Be disciplined

  433. She'll take your life away

  434. She'll strip away your joy

  435. She pretends that she's going to build you up

  436. But she's just going to destroy you

  437. Now for everyone

  438. And this isn't married specific or otherwise

  439. Don't be the one whose feet leads to death

  440. You know don't allow your relationships with married men or women

  441. To get out of hand

  442. Don't let them get to the point where they become an issue

  443. It won't quench your thirst

  444. And it has the potential to do great damage

  445. Not just to families

  446. But also to our wider church family

  447. And you know if you can see the warning signs that I've talked about

  448. Then get help

  449. Be disciplined

  450. Of course there's two sides to every story

  451. You know just because

  452. I guess they're not

  453. You know they're accountable for their own actions as well

  454. But don't be the person whose lips drip honey

  455. And whose speech is as smooth as oil tempting them to the grave

  456. Don't quench your thirst for intimate relationships

  457. Don't quench your thirst for intimate relationships

  458. With the silky smooth lure of adultery

  459. Proverbs says folly, folly, folly

  460. Now the second choice presented here to quench our thirst

  461. Is the pure life giving water of finding pleasure in your spouse

  462. Wisdom says proverbs

  463. Now verse 15

  464. Look at verse 15

  465. Drink water from your own system

  466. Flowing water from your own well

  467. Should your springs be scattered abroad

  468. Streams of water in the streets

  469. Let them be for yourself alone and not for strangers with you

  470. Let your fountain be blessed and rejoice in the wife of your youth

  471. A lovely dear, a graceful doe

  472. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight

  473. Being intoxicated always in her love

  474. See what a contrast this is to folly of adultery

  475. Now you might have noticed Jen pointed this out as well

  476. There's a lot of references to water in this passage

  477. Water from a cistern

  478. Water from a well, springs, streams, fountains

  479. They're all picture words for sex essentially

  480. But this is how we can properly quench our thirst

  481. For our desire for intimate relationships

  482. It's life giving water

  483. It's the opposite of adultery

  484. It's remaining faithful

  485. This passage says

  486. Rejoice in your wife or husband

  487. Take delight in them

  488. Again, you know, again Solomon's talking to both men and women

  489. It's not gender specific

  490. But be intoxicated with their love

  491. Be filled with delight

  492. Rejoice in them

  493. Verse 20

  494. Why should you be intoxicated my son with a forbidden woman

  495. And embrace the bosom of an adulteress

  496. You see Solomon here says

  497. Faithfulness is the real thirst quencher

  498. And just like avoiding adultery

  499. Remaining out of

  500. Remaining faithful requires discipline

  501. See just like folly is not about knowledge alone

  502. Wisdom is not just intelligence

  503. It's not just knowing the right thing

  504. Wisdom is knowing the right thing

  505. And then acting on it

  506. You see marriages require work

  507. They require investment

  508. A strong marriage requires discipline

  509. Verse 16

  510. Should your springs be scattered abroad

  511. Streams of water in the streets

  512. Let them be for yourself alone

  513. And not for strangers with you

  514. You see in our marriages

  515. We need to be working on actively finding delight in our relationships

  516. Because we can lose them

  517. That's what those verses are saying

  518. They can go to someone else

  519. You see, unlike adultery

  520. Where it requires our discipline to stay out of adultery

  521. Our marriages require us to have discipline to stay in them

  522. To keep them healthy

  523. You see, we should be focusing on what actually quenches our thirst for intimate relationships

  524. Married relationships

  525. And in fact, having a healthy married relationship is one of the best antidotes for adultery in the first place

  526. So if you're married, don't accept a bad relationship, a bad marriage as the norm

  527. If you're unhappy and you feel distant in your marriage, then don't accept it as okay

  528. Make sure you get back to the delight that you once had rejoice in the spouse of your youth

  529. If you have a healthy married relationship, then take delight in your partner

  530. Be excited by them, rejoice in them

  531. Be intoxicated by them at every opportunity

  532. Proverbs says quench your thirst in your marriage

  533. Wisdom, wisdom, wisdom

  534. Now I want you to imagine for a second that I stopped the talk here

  535. If I said thanks for coming, that's the end

  536. You know, I've given you probably 10 minutes back

  537. So you might be happy about that

  538. But what would the takeaway be if I stopped the talk here?

  539. It would probably be something like this

  540. The moral of the story is adultery is bad and marriage is good

  541. You know, and I can guarantee that if we looked back on this talk

  542. Let's say we went away for a month and you look back on this talk

  543. You'd go, really?

  544. Is that really it?

  545. You know, if I'm married

  546. Like I love my partner, but is that really the height of satisfaction?

  547. You know, I love them and I rejoice in them and I delight in them

  548. But they let me down all the time

  549. It's hard work

  550. Is that really going to forever quench my thirst?

  551. And if you aren't married, remember I said at the start that this is a passage focused mainly for married people

  552. Then what have I told you so far?

  553. Essentially that you need to get married

  554. Because otherwise you can't quench your thirst for feeling loved

  555. For being significant to someone else to feel known

  556. If you're not married, then you can't have that met

  557. You see, we cannot stop here

  558. Because the ultimate answer to quench my thirst for relationships

  559. Can't be found in earthly relationships

  560. Married or otherwise

  561. Our partners can't deliver eternal satisfaction

  562. You just have to ask my wife

  563. I know she loves me

  564. But you know, I struggle to love her properly for a few hours, let alone for eternity

  565. I'm never going to be able to fulfill her need for love and satisfaction

  566. You know, if Alyssa thought that that was going to be the case

  567. Then she would be bitterly, bitterly disappointed

  568. You see, eternal wisdom, eternal satisfaction comes from having our thirst

  569. For love and significance quenched by God through Jesus Christ

  570. John chapter 4

    John 4 chapter mention

  571. I don't know if you remember this story

  572. But basically, Jesus is at a well

  573. And he meets a Samaritan woman

  574. And the background is Jews and Samaritans hate each other basically

  575. They don't like to talk

  576. They definitely don't eat together

  577. And Jesus asks this woman for a drink from the well

  578. And the woman basically says

  579. You hate us, why are you asking me this?

  580. Verse 10

  581. In John chapter 4

    John 4 chapter mention

  582. Jesus answers her by saying this

  583. If you knew the gift of God

  584. And who it is that is saying to you

  585. Give me a drink

  586. You would have asked him and he would have given you living water

  587. The woman said to him

  588. Sir, you have nothing to draw water with

  589. And the well is deep

  590. Where do you get that living water?

  591. Are you greater than our father Jacob?

  592. He gave us the well and drank from it himself

  593. As did his sons and his livestock

  594. And in verse 13

  595. Jesus said to her

  596. Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again

  597. But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him

  598. Will never be thirsty again

  599. The water that I give him will become in him a spring of water

  600. Welling up to eternal life

  601. You see, only Jesus really eternally quenches our thirst

  602. He is the only one who can give us eternal significance

  603. You see, our marriages are great and they are good things

  604. But they can't eternally quench our thirst for really perfectly being known and loved

  605. You know, not that we don't try though, right?

  606. Because we are very good at looking at everywhere except for God for that satisfaction

  607. If we had to find ourselves in this Proverbs

  608. Book, verse that we've just read, chapter 5

  609. You know, we would be the adulterous woman

  610. We have a loving, caring, devoted partner in God

  611. Who time and time again shows faithfulness to us in every way

  612. He's patient, he's slow to anger, he's abounding in love

  613. But what do we do?

  614. We constantly turn to other things to satisfy us

  615. Things that cannot possibly satisfy us

  616. But we try anyway

  617. On Friday, in youth group, I help run the youth group

  618. We watched The Prince of Egypt

  619. I don't know if you've seen it

  620. It's basically the Exodus story, it's a cartoon

  621. It's got some banger songs, if you like Hans Zimmer, check it out

  622. The soundtrack's very good

  623. But the thing that's really good about this

  624. Is that it really shows God's power

  625. You really get that sense of awe in this movie

  626. And his love for his people

  627. You know, they're suffering in Egypt

  628. And he does everything to save them

  629. He sends fire from heaven

  630. He sends all the plagues, he gets Moses to come along

  631. And basically, the last scene of this movie

  632. Is this shot here that Joel's got up

  633. And it's Moses coming down from the mountains

  634. So he saves them, they're out of Egypt

  635. They've gone across the lake

  636. And he's on Mount Sinai

  637. He's met with Jesus, sorry, God

  638. God's given him the Ten Commandments

  639. Well, Jesus, God, same thing, I guess

  640. But he's given them the Ten Commandments

  641. And he's coming down the hill

  642. And he's got this big swelling Hans Zimmer music behind him

  643. And he gets to this point where he looks out over the valley

  644. At the Israelites

  645. And this is literally the last shot of the movie

  646. It stops there

  647. But it's a very convenient time to finish the movie, isn't it?

  648. Because if we played even one more scene on

  649. It would completely ruin the premise of what the whole movie is

  650. Is that the Israelites are victims

  651. And that they need saving

  652. And that they've been treated terribly

  653. Because what happens in Exodus 32

  654. As Moses is coming down the mountain

  655. He sees that the Israelites have immediately committed adultery against God

  656. They've made two golden calves

  657. Idols

  658. To worship instead of God

  659. At the very first opportunity

  660. Whilst God is in the literal process

  661. Of making a covenant commitment

  662. To them

  663. They have turned their backs on him

  664. And gone after something else

  665. But that's not just them, is it?

  666. We're exactly the same

  667. You see, we're happy to drink the honey and oil

  668. And taste the gall

  669. When we can even see that it's gall that we're drinking

  670. We keep drinking

  671. We continually in every aspect of our lives

  672. Chase after other things

  673. To quench our thirst

  674. Instead of God

  675. Now I'm not going to go into detail here

  676. About what those things are

  677. We don't know what they are in our lives

  678. But our great God

  679. With every right to leave us

  680. With probably you would argue

  681. Every cause to not want us back

  682. Chased after the people that he created

  683. Even though we constantly

  684. Over and over and over

  685. Every single time

  686. Turning our backs on him

  687. He chased after us

  688. Adultery at every turn from our angle

  689. And on his

  690. And on his he gave up everything

  691. To have us back

  692. To remove our unfaithfulness

  693. Our rebellion

  694. Our adultery

  695. You see, he is faithful to us

  696. We find eternal satisfaction in him

  697. And God knows that that is the only way

  698. That we can find it, is through him

  699. We can't find it anywhere else

  700. God gave us Jesus

  701. To die

  702. To bring us back

  703. To bring us back from our

  704. Our rebellion and adultery

  705. And then to rise again

  706. To prove that the punishment

  707. Had been taken

  708. And as Jesus says in John 4

  709. Whoever drinks the water I give them

  710. Will never thirst

  711. Indeed the water I give them

  712. Will become in them

  713. A spring of water

  714. Welling up to eternal life

  715. You see, that's the story here

  716. It's a faithful God

  717. Taking the punishment

  718. For an adulterous people

  719. Through no action of ours

  720. God eternally gives us the opportunity

  721. To have our thirst quenched

  722. With the relationship with him

  723. He has been faithful to us

  724. It's why Solomon says

  725. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge

  726. The only way to have our thirst quenched

  727. Is a relationship with Jesus

  728. To trust in his death and resurrection

  729. To trust that his actions mean that we can have a relationship with our faithful God

  730. So where do we go to quench our thirst?

  731. Ultimately, the only place

  732. Is in God through Jesus Christ

  733. Let's pray

  734. Dear God, thanks for the wisdom that we see in Proverbs chapter 5

    Proverbs 5 chapter mention

  735. Thank you so much

  736. Thank you so much that you have given us married men and women partners to share our lives with

  737. Thanks that you've warned us against adultery and the folly that can be found there

  738. But God, I guess I pray that ultimately you would help us to look for the only place we can really find satisfaction

  739. And that is in your son Jesus

  740. And that is in your son Jesus

  741. Thank you for his death and resurrection

  742. That even though we at every turn

  743. Don't look to you

  744. You chase after us

  745. Please pray that you would help us as we go on our lives to

  746. Remember the importance of this

  747. That Jesus is everything

  748. It's the only way we can have our thirst quenched

  749. Amen
