  1. Then Jacob went on his journey and came to the land of the people of the east.

  2. As he looked, he saw a well in the field, and behold, three flocks of sheep lying beside it,

  3. for out of that well the flocks were watered.

  4. The stone on the well's mouth was large, and when all the flocks were gathered there,

  5. the shepherds would roll the stone from the mouth of the well and water the sheep,

  6. and put the stone back in its place over the mouth of the well.

  7. Jacob said to them, My brothers, where did you come from?

  8. They said, We are from Haran.

  9. He said to them, Do you know Laban, the son of Nahor?

  10. They said, We know him.

  11. He said to them, Is it well with him?

  12. They said, It is well, and see, Rachel, his daughter, is coming with the sheep.

  13. He said, Behold, it is still high day.

  14. It is not time for the livestock to be gathered together.

  15. Water the sheep and go, pasture them.

  16. But they said, We cannot until all the flocks are gathered together,

  17. and the stone is rolled away from the mouth of the well.

  18. Then we water the sheep.

  19. While he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep,

  20. for she was a shepherdess.

  21. Now as soon as Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of Laban, his mother's brother,

  22. and the sheep of Laban, his mother's brother,

  23. Jacob came near and rolled the stone from the well's mouth,

  24. and watered the flock of Laban, his mother's brother.

  25. Then Jacob kissed Rachel and wept aloud.

  26. And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's kinsman,

  27. and that he was Rebekah's son.

  28. And she ran and told her father.

  29. As soon as Laban heard the news about Jacob, his sister's son,

  30. he ran to meet him and embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his house.

  31. Jacob told Laban all these things.

  32. And Laban said to him, Surely you are my bone and my flesh.

  33. And he stayed with him a month.

  34. Then Laban said to Jacob, Because you are my kinsman,

  35. should you therefore serve me for nothing?

  36. Tell me, what shall your wages be?

  37. Now Laban had two daughters.

  38. The name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.

  39. Leah's eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful in form and appearance.

  40. Jacob loved Rachel, and he said,

  41. I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.

  42. Laban said, It is better that I give her to you than I should give her away to any other man.

  43. Stay with me.

  44. So Jacob served seven years for Rachel,

  45. and they seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her.

  46. Then Jacob said to Laban,

  47. Give me my wife that I may go into her, for my time is completed.

  48. So Laban gathered together all the people of the place and made a feast.

  49. But in the evening he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob,

  50. and he went into her.

  51. Laban gave his female servant Zilpah to his daughter Leah to be her servant.

  52. And in the morning, behold, it was Leah.

  53. And Jacob said to Laban,

  54. What is this you have done to me?

  55. Did I not serve with you for Rachel?

  56. Why then have you deceived me?

  57. Laban said,

  58. It is not so done in our country to give the younger before the firstborn.

  59. Complete the week of this one,

  60. and we will give you the other also in return for serving me another seven years.

  61. Jacob did so and completed her week.

  62. Then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife.

  63. Laban gave his female servant Bilhah to his daughter Rachel to be her servant.

  64. So Jacob went into Rachel also,

  65. and he loved Rachel more than Leah,

  66. and served Laban for another seven years.

  67. When the Lord saw that Leah was hated,

  68. he opened her womb,

  69. but Rachel was barren.

  70. And Leah conceived and bore a son,

  71. and she called his name Reuben,

  72. for she said,

  73. Because the Lord has looked upon my affliction,

  74. for now my husband will love me.

  75. She conceived again and bore a son,

  76. and said,

  77. Because the Lord has heard that I am hated,

  78. he has given me this son also,

  79. and she called his name Simeon.

  80. Again she conceived and bore a son,

  81. and said,

  82. Now this time my husband will be attached to me,

  83. because I have borne him three sons.

  84. Therefore his name was called Levi.

  85. And she conceived again and bore a son,

  86. and said,

  87. This time I will praise the Lord.

  88. Therefore she called his name Judah.

  89. Then she ceased bearing.

  90. Thanks, Jane.

  91. Good afternoon, everyone.

  92. Nice to see you again.

  93. Today's the topic of the sermon is

  94. Blessing in the Red Rays.

  95. Initially I was preparing for three sermons

  96. for my trip back to Malaysia.

  97. This is an extra one.

  98. The third one is for next week.

  99. And this sermon covers three chapters,

  100. which is quite long.

  101. So I'm not going to be able to cover,

  102. or maybe I only cover about 10%

  103. of what those three chapters has in it.

  104. But as I prepared for the sermon,

  105. I learned many things,

  106. and I hope that I can help you

  107. to see something in it,

  108. and also enjoy reading that part of the Bible,

  109. and get a lot more out of it

  110. as you read through the three chapters.

  111. Why is it called the Red Rays?

  112. That's because it's just like us.

  113. Jacob just suddenly got himself

  114. into this situation,

  115. which he never dreamt or hoped

  116. or thought of when he came to the uncle's place.

  117. And he started needing to learn how to work,

  118. how to compete with others at work,

  119. deal with the uncle's treachery,

  120. deal with other work makes,

  121. and then having a family,

  122. and having so many wives and children.

  123. All this will occupy his time,

  124. and hopefully through this sermon,

  125. we'll see how the Lord was blessing him.

  126. Even through that,

  127. he may not knew that at that time,

  128. but as the year went on,

  129. he gradually learned

  130. and appreciated what the Lord has done for him.

  131. And that will show us

  132. we come next week

  133. to chapter 32 and 33.

  134. Let us pray first before we start.

  135. Father,

  136. we thank you for your goodness

  137. in helping us

  138. through all that happened to us

  139. in our daily lives,

  140. to see the truth,

  141. and to see the truth about us

  142. and about you.

  143. And thank you for your word

  144. that we can learn from,

  145. and the word that will transform us as well.

  146. Lord,

  147. we ask that you might do so

  148. as we dwell into your word at this time.

  149. Thank you, Lord.

  150. We pray in Jesus' name.

  151. Amen.

  152. So,

  153. last time,

  154. when we

  155. talked about God promising

  156. to be with Jacob,

  157. that is,

  158. while he had the dream

  159. at night,

  160. and that God promised

  161. that he would be with him

  162. and brought him back

  163. to this land.

  164. And when we

  165. heard that God

  166. was blessing someone

  167. or to be,

  168. will be with someone,

  169. we would

  170. straight away

  171. usually think that,

  172. oh,

  173. Jacob would become successful

  174. in whatever way he do.

  175. We will see that Jacob

  176. did become a rich man

  177. 20 years

  178. after God promised

  179. to be with him.

  180. First 14 years,

  181. he worked for the two wives.

  182. He didn't actually get

  183. anything.

  184. But the last six years,

  185. he became very rich.

  186. However,

  187. we will also see that

  188. his wealth

  189. that he accumulated,

  190. eventually,

  191. it was for him

  192. to pay back a debt.

  193. And that we'll see again

  194. next week.

  195. So,

  196. even when he became rich,

  197. it wasn't ready for him.

  198. And we know that

  199. being wealthy and healthy

  200. is not often the outcome

  201. of having God

  202. in our lives.

  203. Majority of

  204. faithful servants of God

  205. live in poverty

  206. under persecution.

  207. Psalm 25,

    Psalms 25:8

  208. verse 8,

  209. says that,

  210. good and upright

  211. is the Lord,

  212. therefore,

  213. he instructs sinners

  214. in the way.

  215. Because God is good

  216. and upright,

  217. so if God promised

  218. to be with us,

  219. he would not just sit there

  220. and let us

  221. do whatever we like.

  222. He will

  223. automatically,

  224. and this part is the nature,

  225. to make us

  226. like him,

  227. good and upright.

  228. and to do that,

  229. he will,

  230. through his work,

  231. I mean,

  232. we read

  233. and we learn,

  234. and through

  235. our interaction

  236. with people

  237. and our living

  238. in this world,

  239. it perpetuates

  240. through difficulty,

  241. difficult times.

  242. And in today's story,

  243. we will see

  244. how God did that

  245. in Jacob's life.

  246. we will see

  247. that

  248. his interaction

  249. with

  250. Laban,

  251. Rachel,

  252. and

  253. Leah and Rachel

  254. in particular.

  255. There are a lot more,

  256. but I could only

  257. cover these three.

  258. So,

  259. last time we came

  260. to the part

  261. when Jacob was sent

  262. to his uncle's place

  263. to find a wife,

  264. though the real reason

  265. was to find refuge

  266. from his brother,

  267. Esau,

  268. who was planning

  269. to kill him.

  270. And then God

  271. appeared to him

  272. and promised him

  273. that he would go

  274. with Jacob.

  275. And then,

  276. so Jacob kept walking

  277. for many weeks.

  278. I'm sure on the way

  279. he'd been asking people,

  280. are you from Haran?

  281. Do you know Laban?

  282. It would take many weeks.

  283. I suspect it would take

  284. about two months

  285. before I arrived

  286. in this well

  287. when there are shepherds

  288. who actually knew

  289. who Laban was.

  290. And it happened

  291. that Rachel

  292. was coming

  293. to the well,

  294. too.

  295. And you can imagine

  296. how relieved

  297. Jacob was

  298. to finally arrive

  299. after being

  300. on the lonely journey

  301. for so long.

  302. He was so excited

  303. that his son

  304. managed to roll

  305. the stone

  306. from the well's mouth

  307. to water

  308. his uncle's ship.

  309. I suppose

  310. they were all waiting

  311. for people to come

  312. so that they could

  313. all do it together.

  314. But somehow,

  315. the long journey

  316. seemed to have

  317. made Jacob

  318. strong enough

  319. to do that

  320. by himself.

  321. And maybe he was

  322. also one thing

  323. to show off a bit

  324. to Rachel.

  325. So he did that.

  326. He kissed Rachel

  327. and cried aloud

  328. and then Laban

  329. heard about him

  330. coming.

  331. He ran to meet him

  332. and took him in.

  333. And we read that

  334. Laban was quite excited

  335. to know that

  336. Jacob was there.

  337. And when we first

  338. read it,

  339. you may think,

  340. oh,

  341. Laban must be

  342. quite a good uncle.

  343. he wants to look

  344. after Jacob.

  345. But as we read

  346. through,

  347. read on,

  348. we find that

  349. it's not the case.

  350. Laban was just

  351. trying to

  352. make use of

  353. Jacob

  354. for his own gain.

  355. But why was he

  356. so excited?

  357. If we know

  358. about

  359. Jacob's mom,

  360. Rebecca,

  361. who is

  362. Laban's sister,

  363. so when

  364. Abraham's servant

  365. came

  366. to

  367. get a wife

  368. for Isaac,

  369. that is

  370. Jacob's father,

  371. brother,

  372. Abraham's

  373. servant

  374. brought a lot

  375. of gifts,

  376. a lot of gold

  377. and precious

  378. things.

  379. I think

  380. Laban was

  381. expecting the

  382. same thing,

  383. oh,

  384. now the

  385. second generation

  386. has come,

  387. what is he

  388. bringing to me?

  389. But unfortunately,

  390. Jacob didn't

  391. bring anything.

  392. Jacob was by

  393. himself and

  394. he didn't

  395. have anything

  396. with him.

  397. But Jacob

  398. was attracted

  399. to Rachel.

  400. I think it

  401. was not

  402. only because

  403. Rachel was

  404. pretty,

  405. but most

  406. sadly also

  407. because Rachel

  408. was the first

  409. person,

  410. Jacob could

  411. be a hero

  412. too.

  413. Jacob showed

  414. himself to be

  415. a man.

  416. If you know

  417. Jacob's background,

  418. he wasn't loved

  419. by his father

  420. and now he's

  421. running away

  422. from his

  423. brother.

  424. He's an

  425. insecure man.

  426. He finds

  427. himself insignificant

  428. and now he

  429. could show

  430. that he

  431. was a man

  432. to Rachel.

  433. That's why

  434. it's part of

  435. it in terms

  436. of not only

  437. Rachel was

  438. attractive to

  439. him,

  440. but Rachel

  441. was sort

  442. of dependent

  443. on him

  444. in Jacob's

  445. mind.

  446. However,

  447. as time

  448. goes on,

  449. after a month,

  450. it became

  451. clear that

  452. Laban was not

  453. going to let

  454. Jacob marry

  455. his daughter

  456. without payment

  457. and so they

  458. make a deal

  459. and verse 20

  460. says,

  461. so Jacob

  462. served seven

  463. years for

  464. Rachel and

  465. they seemed

  466. to him

  467. but a few

  468. days because

  469. of the love

  470. he had for

  471. her.

  472. In Rachel,

  473. Jacob had

  474. the first

  475. taste of

  476. sacrificial

  477. love.

  478. He never

  479. had this

  480. sort of love

  481. before.

  482. He suddenly

  483. was so

  484. occupied,

  485. his mind

  486. was so

  487. occupied by

  488. Rachel.

  489. He seemed

  490. to have

  491. gone crazy.

  492. He could

  493. only think

  494. about Rachel.

  495. He was

  496. never one

  497. who would

  498. be taken

  499. advantage

  500. of,

  501. but then

  502. for Rachel

  503. he was

  504. willing to

  505. work without

  506. wages.

  507. So he

  508. worked for

  509. seven years

  510. and it

  511. seemed to

  512. be a short

  513. time to

  514. him.

  515. So you

  516. can imagine

  517. how he

  518. was expecting

  519. to get

  520. Rachel.

  521. So his

  522. love for

  523. Rachel helped

  524. him to

  525. enjoy the

  526. hardship and

  527. abuses

  528. experience at

  529. work.

  530. He would

  531. otherwise

  532. not have

  533. learned how

  534. to be a

  535. good shepherd

  536. through this.

  537. He learned

  538. how to

  539. spend his

  540. night in

  541. the wilderness,

  542. look after

  543. the sheep

  544. and be a

  545. strong man

  546. I suppose

  547. over this

  548. time.

  549. If you

  550. remember,

  551. Jacob's

  552. mother,

  553. Rebecca,

  554. did love

  555. Jacob

  556. sacrificially,

  557. love for

  558. the

  559. parents.

  560. Jacob

  561. did not

  562. appreciate it

  563. then as

  564. most children

  565. would not

  566. appreciate how

  567. their parents

  568. loved them.

  569. Jacob was

  570. happy to let

  571. his mother

  572. take the

  573. curse for

  574. him if

  575. his deception

  576. was found

  577. out by

  578. Isaac and

  579. that showed

  580. that he

  581. didn't actually

  582. appreciate that

  583. love.

  584. But now

  585. that he

  586. is actually

  587. loving

  588. someone

  589. in a

  590. similar way,

  591. he had

  592. the chance

  593. to understand

  594. how his

  595. mother had

  596. loved him.

  597. And for

  598. us,

  599. if we

  600. have such

  601. a love,

  602. we could

  603. understand how

  604. God has

  605. loved us

  606. as well.

  607. The end

  608. of seven

  609. years came.

  610. Nabhan

  611. did nothing

  612. until Jacob

  613. reminded him

  614. that he

  615. had fulfilled

  616. his side

  617. of the deal.

  618. Then Nabhan

  619. held a wedding

  620. feast for

  621. Jacob and

  622. Rachel,

  623. but cheated

  624. Jacob by

  625. replacing

  626. Rachel with

  627. Leah under

  628. the darkness

  629. of the night.

  630. Nabhan

  631. profited a

  632. lot from

  633. Jacob's

  634. service.

  635. And he

  636. could not

  637. get anyone

  638. to pay a

  639. good price

  640. for Leah,

  641. so he

  642. deceived

  643. Jacob.

  644. He let

  645. Jacob have

  646. Rachel as

  647. well,

  648. with the

  649. condition that

  650. he served

  651. for another

  652. seven years.

  653. So in

  654. Nabhan,

  655. Jacob had a

  656. taste of

  657. what it

  658. meant to be

  659. deceived.

  660. We cannot

  661. appreciate the

  662. harm we

  663. do to

  664. others until

  665. we are

  666. the victims.

  667. Jacob would

  668. not have

  669. understood how

  670. his father

  671. Isaac and

  672. his brother

  673. Esau felt

  674. until he

  675. himself was

  676. a victim of

  677. deception.

  678. Being on the

  679. receiving end

  680. of deception

  681. also helps us

  682. to empathize

  683. with those

  684. who have been

  685. deceived.

  686. love.

  687. And we

  688. know that

  689. because of

  690. Jacob's

  691. dependence on

  692. Nabhan and

  693. his love for

  694. Rachel, he

  695. had little

  696. choice but to

  697. submit to

  698. Nabhan's

  699. scheme at

  700. this stage.

  701. So he

  702. had Leah

  703. and

  704. Rachel.

  705. With Rachel,

  706. he got no

  707. problem, he

  708. loved Rachel.

  709. But in

  710. Leah, Jacob

  711. needed to

  712. learn how to

  713. love someone

  714. who was not

  715. lovely, at

  716. least someone

  717. not lovely

  718. in his

  719. eye.

  720. Jacob had no

  721. interest in

  722. Leah.

  723. But divorcing

  724. Leah was

  725. not out of

  726. the question

  727. in his

  728. time.

  729. And God

  730. gave Leah

  731. some help.

  732. Leah had

  733. four sons

  734. in a row

  735. while Rachel

  736. could not

  737. conceive.

  738. At that

  739. time, having

  740. children, in

  741. particular

  742. sons, is

  743. very important

  744. to develop

  745. into a

  746. strong family

  747. to do

  748. farming, all

  749. those things.

  750. So having

  751. four children

  752. would definitely

  753. help Leah's

  754. position in

  755. the family.

  756. And at

  757. least because

  758. of the

  759. children,

  760. Jacob started

  761. to care about

  762. Leah and

  763. learn how to

  764. love her.

  765. However, Leah

  766. was not

  767. contented with

  768. having children.

  769. She wanted

  770. more.

  771. She wanted

  772. like what

  773. Jacob gave

  774. to Rachel.

  775. So Leah

  776. and Rachel

  777. started using

  778. children to

  779. strengthen their

  780. position in

  781. the family.

  782. In that

  783. time, a

  784. woman's

  785. security and

  786. significance

  787. were dependent

  788. on their

  789. father before

  790. their marriage.

  791. After their

  792. marriage, it

  793. depended on

  794. the husband.

  795. And so having

  796. the husband's

  797. love was

  798. very important.

  799. children.

  800. And so they

  801. both tried to

  802. have more

  803. children and

  804. they gave

  805. Jacob their

  806. mates to

  807. have more

  808. children as

  809. well.

  810. So both

  811. Leah and

  812. Rachel wanted

  813. to be the

  814. most secure

  815. and significant

  816. person in the

  817. family.

  818. Neither of

  819. them feared

  820. God or

  821. trusted God.

  822. They became

  823. stuck in

  824. constant

  825. scheming for

  826. prominence in

  827. the family.

  828. In a way,

  829. they condemned

  830. themselves to

  831. live unhappily

  832. ever after if

  833. they don't

  834. change in

  835. the way.

  836. As you

  837. know, my

  838. father had

  839. two wives

  840. living under

  841. the same

  842. roof.

  843. My mother

  844. was a

  845. younger wife.

  846. When I was

  847. young, I used

  848. to sleep in

  849. my mother's

  850. room because

  851. there was no

  852. other place

  853. for me to

  854. sleep.

  855. So my

  856. younger

  857. brother and

  858. myself were

  859. the two

  860. younger,

  861. and so we

  862. sleep with

  863. our mother.

  864. And my

  865. father was

  866. always in

  867. my mother's

  868. room overnight.

  869. I didn't

  870. think much

  871. of it until

  872. I was

  873. older.

  874. Then I

  875. started to

  876. think,

  877. why is it

  878. that he

  879. never spent

  880. time with

  881. my senior

  882. mother?

  883. I mean,

  884. I was young,

  885. I didn't

  886. think that

  887. it was

  888. something

  889. unusual,

  890. but as

  891. I get

  892. older,

  893. I thought,

  894. why is

  895. my father

  896. always in

  897. my mom's

  898. room?

  899. And then

  900. as I look

  901. back now,

  902. I could

  903. understand

  904. why my

  905. senior

  906. mother was

  907. so demanding

  908. in nature.

  909. So she

  910. was the

  911. mistress

  912. of the

  913. household

  914. to assign

  915. jobs to

  916. each of

  917. us.

  918. I would

  919. always try

  920. to hide

  921. from her

  922. because every

  923. time she

  924. saw me

  925. doing nothing,

  926. she would

  927. get me a

  928. job to

  929. do.

  930. So there's

  931. no freedom

  932. in a sense.

  933. After school,

  934. going,

  935. getting home,

  936. there's always

  937. job,

  938. regardless,

  939. even if you

  940. have homework

  941. or whatever,

  942. there's also

  943. job to do.

  944. I was

  945. talking to

  946. my

  947. eldest

  948. sister

  949. who

  950. actually

  951. looked after

  952. me when

  953. I was

  954. young

  955. because my

  956. mom was

  957. too busy

  958. working and

  959. doing all

  960. the jobs.

  961. So my

  962. eldest sister

  963. said he

  964. hated coming

  965. home just

  966. because every

  967. time she

  968. came home,

  969. she got

  970. no time

  971. for herself.

  972. You can't

  973. plan anything.

  974. Basically,

  975. we couldn't

  976. plan anything.

  977. If you

  978. plan to

  979. do something,

  980. forget it.

  981. If you

  982. don't do

  983. it,

  984. you get

  985. a scolding.

  986. So the

  987. home was

  988. like a

  989. factory.

  990. My senior

  991. mother was

  992. very well

  993. known in

  994. our hometown

  995. to produce

  996. the best

  997. Chinese

  998. delicacies.

  999. And all

  1000. those things

  1001. take a lot

  1002. of manpower

  1003. to produce.

  1004. And my

  1005. senior mother

  1006. was well

  1007. known for

  1008. it.

  1009. And that

  1010. is her

  1011. significance.

  1012. And that's

  1013. why she

  1014. needs that.

  1015. And that's

  1016. why she

  1017. traded her

  1018. relationship

  1019. with her

  1020. children for

  1021. her significance.

  1022. Even her

  1023. own children

  1024. seemed like

  1025. her eventually.

  1026. It was

  1027. not close

  1028. to her.

  1029. My mom

  1030. worked from

  1031. early morning

  1032. until late

  1033. at night.

  1034. But my mom

  1035. never complained.

  1036. I think

  1037. he had my

  1038. father's

  1039. attention and

  1040. that was

  1041. enough for

  1042. her.

  1043. And she

  1044. just

  1045. suffered.

  1046. But

  1047. because she

  1048. suffered

  1049. together with

  1050. us,

  1051. so she

  1052. is very

  1053. close to

  1054. all the

  1055. children,

  1056. including

  1057. my

  1058. senior mom's

  1059. children,

  1060. even now.

  1061. So

  1062. I fell

  1063. for Leah

  1064. in this

  1065. sense.

  1066. Because Leah

  1067. didn't have

  1068. the significance

  1069. and security

  1070. he needed

  1071. to fight

  1072. for it.

  1073. He didn't

  1074. know where

  1075. to get it.

  1076. If he

  1077. had his

  1078. security

  1079. and significance

  1080. in God,

  1081. then in

  1082. the first

  1083. place,

  1084. he would

  1085. not have

  1086. collaborated

  1087. with

  1088. Laban

  1089. in deceiving

  1090. Jacob.

  1091. Jacob.

  1092. And

  1093. secondly,

  1094. if he

  1095. did marry

  1096. Jacob,

  1097. he would

  1098. not need

  1099. to make

  1100. herself so

  1101. miserable

  1102. in

  1103. scheming and

  1104. fighting

  1105. over

  1106. Jacob with

  1107. Rachel.

  1108. So

  1109. Leah

  1110. was hoping

  1111. that by

  1112. marrying

  1113. Jacob,

  1114. her life

  1115. would be

  1116. happier.

  1117. but in

  1118. fact,

  1119. she was

  1120. disappointed.

  1121. Things that

  1122. we get

  1123. by deception

  1124. don't usually

  1125. bring

  1126. happiness.

  1127. So

  1128. as Jacob

  1129. tried to

  1130. relate to

  1131. Leah,

  1132. he was

  1133. reminded

  1134. about how

  1135. his father

  1136. Isaac

  1137. related to

  1138. him.

  1139. Leah

  1140. in Jacob's

  1141. eyes

  1142. was like

  1143. Jacob

  1144. in Isaac's

  1145. eyes.

  1146. As Jacob

  1147. wished Isaac

  1148. would love

  1149. him more,

  1150. Leah was

  1151. wishing

  1152. Jacob

  1153. would love

  1154. her more.

  1155. At this

  1156. point,

  1157. we may

  1158. ask,

  1159. why didn't

  1160. God stop

  1161. Laban

  1162. from deceiving

  1163. Jacob?

  1164. The same

  1165. question can

  1166. be asked,

  1167. why didn't

  1168. God stop

  1169. Jacob from

  1170. deceiving

  1171. Isaac?

  1172. Or why

  1173. didn't God

  1174. stop the

  1175. serpent from

  1176. deceiving

  1177. Eve?

  1178. Throughout

  1179. the Bible,

  1180. we see that

  1181. God intervenes

  1182. in some

  1183. matters and

  1184. not in many

  1185. other matters.

  1186. If you are

  1187. a parent,

  1188. you may know

  1189. that you should

  1190. not intervene

  1191. in everything

  1192. in your

  1193. child's or

  1194. children's

  1195. life.

  1196. some

  1197. parents

  1198. want to

  1199. protect

  1200. their

  1201. children

  1202. and

  1203. would

  1204. not

  1205. allow

  1206. them

  1207. to

  1208. make

  1209. mistakes

  1210. or

  1211. get

  1212. hurt.

  1213. My

  1214. mom,

  1215. who is

  1216. 95 years

  1217. old now,

  1218. she still

  1219. scolds my

  1220. 70-year-old

  1221. brother when

  1222. he did

  1223. something that

  1224. she is not

  1225. pleased with.

  1226. My oldest

  1227. brother,

  1228. her oldest

  1229. son,

  1230. and my

  1231. oldest sister,

  1232. oldest daughter,

  1233. both of

  1234. them are not

  1235. married because

  1236. they were

  1237. just too

  1238. busy.

  1239. to socialize

  1240. when they

  1241. were young.

  1242. Now my

  1243. oldest brother

  1244. and my

  1245. mom live

  1246. together and

  1247. they care

  1248. for each

  1249. other,

  1250. but they

  1251. don't talk.

  1252. Whenever I

  1253. go back

  1254. home,

  1255. the interaction

  1256. is argument

  1257. over something

  1258. or blaming

  1259. or something.

  1260. That's because

  1261. my mom

  1262. had never

  1263. treated my

  1264. oldest brother

  1265. as an adult

  1266. and still

  1267. exerting

  1268. control over

  1269. her.

  1270. In a way,

  1271. it's a bit

  1272. sad that

  1273. they lose

  1274. that enjoyment

  1275. of talking

  1276. as friends

  1277. and as

  1278. adults,

  1279. not only as

  1280. mother to

  1281. son.

  1282. Even all

  1283. these years,

  1284. if the

  1285. parents just

  1286. want to

  1287. control the

  1288. children and

  1289. prevent them

  1290. from getting

  1291. hurt,

  1292. they will

  1293. lose a lot

  1294. of enjoyment

  1295. together in

  1296. the relationship.

  1297. So this is

  1298. about God's

  1299. heart.

  1300. God has

  1301. got a

  1302. father's

  1303. heart in

  1304. terms of

  1305. how he

  1306. deals with

  1307. us.

  1308. We should

  1309. also consider

  1310. what is in

  1311. our hearts

  1312. when we

  1313. do foolish

  1314. things.

  1315. Why was

  1316. Eve

  1317. deceived?

  1318. Because she

  1319. wanted to

  1320. be like

  1321. God, who

  1322. can determine

  1323. what is

  1324. good and

  1325. what is

  1326. evil.

  1327. She

  1328. wanted to

  1329. be more

  1330. significant

  1331. than being

  1332. Adam's

  1333. wife and

  1334. God's

  1335. daughter.

  1336. She

  1337. could not

  1338. deny her

  1339. desire to

  1340. be more

  1341. significant.

  1342. Why was

  1343. Isaac

  1344. deceived by

  1345. Jacob?

  1346. Because Isaac

  1347. was blinded

  1348. by his

  1349. own love

  1350. of Esau.

  1351. He was

  1352. determined to

  1353. bless Esau.

  1354. He heard

  1355. Jacob's

  1356. voice.

  1357. It should

  1358. have been

  1359. sufficient for

  1360. Isaac to

  1361. realize that

  1362. it was

  1363. Jacob.

  1364. But when

  1365. our minds

  1366. are occupied

  1367. with the

  1368. desire to

  1369. accomplish

  1370. something,

  1371. we usually

  1372. ignore

  1373. warning signs.

  1374. Why was

  1375. Jacob

  1376. deceived by

  1377. Laban?

  1378. Because he

  1379. was blinded

  1380. by his

  1381. love of

  1382. Rachel.

  1383. Before

  1384. Jacob

  1385. left home,

  1386. he was

  1387. full of

  1388. himself.

  1389. During his

  1390. trip to

  1391. Haran,

  1392. he encountered

  1393. God.

  1394. In

  1395. Haran,

  1396. then he

  1397. encountered

  1398. Rachel.

  1399. Jacob

  1400. was beginning

  1401. to change

  1402. from worshipping

  1403. himself to

  1404. worshipping

  1405. God.

  1406. Now it

  1407. seems that

  1408. Rachel became

  1409. his idol.

  1410. I believe

  1411. that there

  1412. would be

  1413. many telltale

  1414. signs.

  1415. Laban was

  1416. manipulating him

  1417. over the

  1418. seven years.

  1419. He could

  1420. see how

  1421. Laban

  1422. treated

  1423. other

  1424. people.

  1425. And there

  1426. would be

  1427. signs that

  1428. something was

  1429. not right

  1430. in the

  1431. wedding night.

  1432. But Jacob

  1433. was too

  1434. focused on

  1435. Rachel that

  1436. he lost

  1437. his objectivity.

  1438. While it was

  1439. not wrong

  1440. for Jacob

  1441. to love

  1442. Rachel,

  1443. but when

  1444. such a love

  1445. does not

  1446. submit to

  1447. God's

  1448. guidance,

  1449. it does

  1450. not usually

  1451. end well.

  1452. if his

  1453. focus was

  1454. on God

  1455. who promised

  1456. to be

  1457. with him,

  1458. Laban

  1459. would not

  1460. be able

  1461. to use

  1462. Rachel

  1463. to manipulate

  1464. Jacob.

  1465. The amazing

  1466. thing is that

  1467. God will

  1468. always achieve

  1469. his purpose

  1470. regardless

  1471. of our

  1472. foolish choices.

  1473. And we

  1474. see that

  1475. as the

  1476. story develops.

  1477. In these

  1478. three sermons,

  1479. I have

  1480. mentioned

  1481. many times

  1482. about security

  1483. and significance

  1484. as a

  1485. motivation

  1486. for our

  1487. behaviors.

  1488. to be

  1489. secure

  1490. is to

  1491. have

  1492. protection

  1493. and provision.

  1494. And to be

  1495. significant

  1496. is to have

  1497. respect

  1498. and recognition.

  1499. And that's

  1500. what we

  1501. want in

  1502. our whole

  1503. life.

  1504. But in

  1505. Jacob,

  1506. so that's

  1507. why Jacob

  1508. deceased his

  1509. father to

  1510. get the

  1511. blessing.

  1512. That's

  1513. why he

  1514. wanted.

  1515. But in

  1516. Rachel,

  1517. we found

  1518. a third

  1519. motivation

  1520. force for

  1521. Jacob's

  1522. behavior.

  1523. It was

  1524. not for

  1525. security

  1526. or

  1527. significance

  1528. that

  1529. Jacob

  1530. worked

  1531. 14

  1532. years

  1533. for

  1534. Rachel

  1535. because

  1536. he

  1537. did not

  1538. receive

  1539. any

  1540. wages

  1541. or

  1542. position

  1543. for

  1544. his

  1545. work.

  1546. And getting

  1547. Rachel

  1548. would not

  1549. make him

  1550. wealthier

  1551. or more

  1552. powerful.

  1553. What was

  1554. motivating

  1555. Jacob

  1556. then?

  1557. That was

  1558. love that

  1559. we talk

  1560. about.

  1561. Love can

  1562. mean

  1563. different

  1564. things.

  1565. In here,

  1566. I'm talking

  1567. about the

  1568. feeling that

  1569. your life

  1570. is incomplete

  1571. without the

  1572. presence of

  1573. that object

  1574. or the

  1575. person

  1576. of your

  1577. love.

  1578. When Adam

  1579. first saw

  1580. Eve,

  1581. he said,

  1582. this at

  1583. last is

  1584. born of

  1585. my bones

  1586. and flesh

  1587. of my

  1588. flesh.

  1589. Adam

  1590. meant that

  1591. if you

  1592. take Eve

  1593. away from

  1594. him,

  1595. it was

  1596. like taking

  1597. away his

  1598. bone and

  1599. flesh.

  1600. When

  1601. Laban

  1602. first met

  1603. Jacob,

  1604. he also

  1605. said the

  1606. same thing,

  1607. surely you

  1608. are my

  1609. bone and

  1610. my flesh.

  1611. love.

  1612. But then

  1613. Laban

  1614. has

  1615. changed

  1616. the

  1617. definition

  1618. of love.

  1619. He was

  1620. deceiving

  1621. himself and

  1622. Jacob when

  1623. he said

  1624. that,

  1625. as if he

  1626. said that

  1627. he loved

  1628. Jacob.

  1629. He was

  1630. in fact

  1631. telling

  1632. Jacob that

  1633. you are

  1634. mine,

  1635. therefore

  1636. serve me.

  1637. But Adam

  1638. was telling

  1639. Eve that

  1640. you are

  1641. mine,

  1642. therefore I

  1643. will serve

  1644. you.

  1645. This is

  1646. a love

  1647. that I'm

  1648. talking

  1649. about that

  1650. Jacob was

  1651. starting to

  1652. experience

  1653. that he

  1654. could love

  1655. someone just

  1656. purely because

  1657. the person,

  1658. not because

  1659. the person

  1660. can give

  1661. him anything

  1662. in the sense

  1663. of security

  1664. and significance.

  1665. However,

  1666. there is

  1667. still a bit

  1668. of self-centeredness

  1669. in this

  1670. style of love

  1671. as we love

  1672. people.

  1673. There's always

  1674. the pleasure

  1675. or something

  1676. that we get

  1677. from the

  1678. person,

  1679. which Jacob

  1680. couldn't get

  1681. from Leah.

  1682. But that is

  1683. at least the

  1684. start of that

  1685. love.

  1686. So in

  1687. Rachel,

  1688. Jacob first

  1689. experienced

  1690. self-denying

  1691. love.

  1692. Love made

  1693. him do

  1694. everything

  1695. just to be

  1696. with Rachel.

  1697. In Leah,

  1698. Jacob had a

  1699. challenge of

  1700. loving someone

  1701. who was not

  1702. lovely.

  1703. And in

  1704. Laban,

  1705. Jacob saw

  1706. the degradation

  1707. of love.

  1708. So when

  1709. a man

  1710. loved God,

  1711. he would

  1712. love other

  1713. people and

  1714. things appropriately.

  1715. When a man

  1716. does not

  1717. love God,

  1718. he will

  1719. not be

  1720. able to

  1721. love other

  1722. people and

  1723. things appropriately.

  1724. What was

  1725. Laban's object

  1726. of love?

  1727. It was

  1728. quite obvious,

  1729. it's money.

  1730. Why did

  1731. Laban love

  1732. money?

  1733. Because money

  1734. can be exchanged

  1735. for security,

  1736. significance,

  1737. and pleasure.

  1738. Laban could

  1739. only see life

  1740. in terms of

  1741. profit and

  1742. loss.

  1743. Laban could

  1744. only relate to

  1745. people in

  1746. terms of

  1747. benefit or

  1748. burden.

  1749. He would

  1750. only do

  1751. what he

  1752. thought would

  1753. profit him.

  1754. He would

  1755. befriend people

  1756. who would

  1757. benefit him.

  1758. Once Jacob

  1759. saw Laban's

  1760. real face,

  1761. he did not

  1762. want to

  1763. become another

  1764. Laban.

  1765. Jacob started

  1766. to realize

  1767. that while he

  1768. suffered under

  1769. Laban,

  1770. he was also

  1771. becoming a

  1772. person who

  1773. was different

  1774. from Laban.

  1775. did Jacob

  1776. learn his

  1777. lessons?

  1778. We shall

  1779. see that

  1780. he did

  1781. as we

  1782. read the

  1783. subsequent

  1784. chapters of

  1785. Genesis,

  1786. which will

  1787. be the

  1788. topic of

  1789. next week's

  1790. sermon.

  1791. When God

  1792. promised that

  1793. he would

  1794. be with

  1795. Jacob,

  1796. he would

  1797. ensure that

  1798. Jacob would

  1799. be changed.

  1800. This change

  1801. did not come

  1802. about as if

  1803. God just

  1804. put a spell

  1805. on Jacob.

  1806. This change

  1807. came about

  1808. as God

  1809. led Jacob

  1810. to see

  1811. Jacob's own

  1812. heart in

  1813. the light

  1814. of the

  1815. holy God.

  1816. and also

  1817. in the

  1818. midst of

  1819. the red

  1820. race as

  1821. Jacob

  1822. makes

  1823. decisions

  1824. and choices

  1825. in his

  1826. relationship,

  1827. in his

  1828. work,

  1829. in his

  1830. family.

  1831. All this

  1832. are still

  1833. happening in

  1834. our life

  1835. right now.

  1836. In

  1837. chapter 16

  1838. verses

  1839. 24 to

  1840. 26,

  1841. Jesus

  1842. told his

  1843. disciples,

  1844. if anyone

  1845. would come

  1846. after me,

  1847. let him

  1848. deny

  1849. himself

  1850. and take

  1851. up his

  1852. cross

  1853. and follow

  1854. me.

  1855. For

  1856. whoever

  1857. would save

  1858. his life

  1859. will lose

  1860. it,

  1861. but whoever

  1862. loses

  1863. his life

  1864. for my

  1865. sake

  1866. will find

  1867. it.

  1868. For

  1869. what

  1870. will

  1871. profit

  1872. a man

  1873. if he

  1874. gains

  1875. the whole

  1876. world

  1877. and forfeit

  1878. his soul?

  1879. or what

  1880. shall a

  1881. man

  1882. give

  1883. in

  1884. return

  1885. for

  1886. his

  1887. soul?

  1888. First

  1889. of all,

  1890. we

  1891. consider

  1892. why

  1893. would

  1894. anyone

  1895. want

  1896. to

  1897. come

  1898. after

  1899. Jesus?

  1900. I

  1901. can

  1902. give

  1903. you

  1904. four

  1905. reasons.

  1906. Number

  1907. one,

  1908. Jesus

  1909. said he

  1910. came

  1911. as a

  1912. good

  1913. shepherd

  1914. who

  1915. gave

  1916. his

  1917. life

  1918. for

  1919. his

  1920. sheep.

  1921. Jesus

  1922. denied

  1923. himself

  1924. of

  1925. comfort

  1926. and

  1927. status.

  1928. He

  1929. died

  1930. for

  1931. our

  1932. sins

  1933. on

  1934. the

  1935. cross.

  1936. Adam

  1937. told

  1938. Eve,

  1939. you

  1940. are

  1941. my

  1942. bone

  1943. and

  1944. my

  1945. flesh.

  1946. I

  1947. will

  1948. love

  1949. you.

  1950. Laban

  1951. told

  1952. Jacob,

  1953. you

  1954. are

  1955. my

  1956. bone

  1957. and

  1958. my

  1959. flesh.

  1960. You

  1961. should

  1962. serve

  1963. me.

  1964. Jesus

  1965. told

  1966. his

  1967. sheep,

  1968. here

  1969. is

  1970. my

  1971. body

  1972. and

  1973. blood

  1974. broken

  1975. and

  1976. spilled

  1977. out

  1978. for

  1979. you.

  1980. Jesus

  1981. did

  1982. not

  1983. give

  1984. a few

  1985. years

  1986. of

  1987. his

  1988. life

  1989. to

  1990. redeem

  1991. Jesus

  1992. said

  1993. he

  1994. came

  1995. to

  1996. seek

  1997. sinners,

  1998. those

  1999. who

  2000. are

  2001. not

  2002. lovely,

  2003. to

  2004. change

  2005. them

  2006. into

  2007. those

  2008. who

  2009. are

  2010. lovely.

  2011. Isaac

  2012. found

  2013. it

  2014. difficult

  2015. to

  2016. love

  2017. Jacob,

  2018. Jacob

  2019. found

  2020. it

  2021. difficult

  2022. to

  2023. love

  2024. Leah.

  2025. We

  2026. find

  2027. it

  2028. difficult

  2029. to

  2030. love

  2031. many

  2032. people.

  2033. Jesus

  2034. did

  2035. not

  2036. only

  2037. die

  2038. for

  2039. us

  2040. when

  2041. we

  2042. were

  2043. yet

  2044. sinners,

  2045. he

  2046. will

  2047. also

  2048. change

  2049. us

  2050. into

  2051. saints.

  2052. Reason

  2053. number

  2054. three,

  2055. Jesus

  2056. rose

  2057. again

  2058. and

  2059. will

  2060. never

  2061. die.

  2062. In

  2063. Jesus

  2064. we

  2065. will

  2066. find

  2067. our

  2068. souls

  2069. who

  2070. will

  2071. never

  2072. die

  2073. again.

  2074. This

  2075. gives

  2076. us

  2077. meaning

  2078. and

  2079. hope

  2080. for

  2081. our

  2082. existence.

  2083. Reason

  2084. number

  2085. four,

  2086. Jesus

  2087. is

  2088. Lord.

  2089. At

  2090. the

  2091. name

  2092. of

  2093. Jesus

  2094. every

  2095. knee

  2096. should

  2097. bow.

  2098. Why

  2099. would

  2100. we

  2101. follow

  2102. anybody

  2103. else?

  2104. Would

  2105. Laban

  2106. come

  2107. after

  2108. Jesus?

  2109. He

  2110. would

  2111. not.

  2112. He

  2113. would

  2114. consider

  2115. the

  2116. message

  2117. of the

  2118. cross

  2119. something

  2120. foolish

  2121. and

  2122. weak.

  2123. He

  2124. would

  2125. only

  2126. come

  2127. after

  2128. the

  2129. way

  2130. of

  2131. this

  2132. world.

  2133. He

  2134. would

  2135. get

  2136. what

  2137. he

  2138. wants.

  2139. He

  2140. would

  2141. scheme,

  2142. he

  2143. would

  2144. compete,

  2145. he

  2146. would

  2147. cheat,

  2148. he

  2149. would

  2150. do

  2151. anything

  2152. to

  2153. satisfy

  2154. the

  2155. desires

  2156. of

  2157. his

  2158. heart.

  2159. Because

  2160. the

  2161. desire

  2162. of

  2163. his

  2164. heart

  2165. was

  2166. not

  2167. satisfiable

  2168. with

  2169. whatever

  2170. he

  2171. could

  2172. gain

  2173. in

  2174. this

  2175. world,

  2176. he

  2177. would

  2178. scheme

  2179. some

  2180. more,

  2181. compete

  2182. some

  2183. more,

  2184. cheat

  2185. some

  2186. more,

  2187. until

  2188. the

  2189. freedom

  2190. he

  2191. thought

  2192. he

  2193. had

  2194. in

  2195. doing

  2196. things

  2197. become

  2198. a

  2199. bondage.

  2200. He

  2201. becomes

  2202. a

  2203. prisoner

  2204. of

  2205. his

  2206. own

  2207. desire.

  2208. He

  2209. will

  2210. keep

  2211. seeking

  2212. for

  2213. satisfaction

  2214. for

  2215. eternity

  2216. but

  2217. will

  2218. never

  2219. find

  2220. it.

  2221. It

  2222. is

  2223. like

  2224. a

  2225. drug

  2226. addict

  2227. who

  2228. cannot

  2229. stop

  2230. using

  2231. drugs

  2232. even

  2233. when

  2234. he

  2235. finds

  2236. that

  2237. drug

  2238. is

  2239. no

  2240. longer

  2241. pressurable.

  2242. Laban

  2243. can only

  2244. boast

  2245. in his

  2246. achievements,

  2247. he

  2248. can never

  2249. boast

  2250. in the

  2251. cross.

  2252. In

  2253. the

  2254. process

  2255. of

  2256. gaining

  2257. his

  2258. wealth,

  2259. Laban

  2260. abused

  2261. everyone

  2262. else,

  2263. including

  2264. his

  2265. own

  2266. family,

  2267. now that

  2268. he

  2269. was

  2270. very

  2271. wealthy,

  2272. he

  2273. became

  2274. a

  2275. lonely

  2276. old

  2277. man.

  2278. Like

  2279. Esau,

  2280. Laban

  2281. sold

  2282. his

  2283. birthright

  2284. for

  2285. a

  2286. single

  2287. meal.

  2288. He

  2289. had

  2290. exchanged

  2291. eternal

  2292. satisfaction

  2293. with

  2294. transient

  2295. pleasure.

  2296. Would

  2297. Jacob

  2298. follow

  2299. Jesus?

  2300. Not

  2301. initially.

  2302. However,

  2303. God

  2304. took him

  2305. away from

  2306. the comfort

  2307. of his

  2308. home and

  2309. go through

  2310. a lonely

  2311. journey and

  2312. left him

  2313. under

  2314. Laban

  2315. for

  2316. 20

  2317. years.

  2318. Jacob

  2319. observed

  2320. Laban's

  2321. life.

  2322. He saw

  2323. Laban's

  2324. wealth,

  2325. comfort,

  2326. and power.

  2327. He also

  2328. saw Laban's

  2329. no-needness,

  2330. restlessness,

  2331. and joylessness.

  2332. He saw how

  2333. Laban treated

  2334. his children and

  2335. servants.

  2336. Everything is

  2337. about profit.

  2338. He saw how

  2339. Laban could

  2340. not keep

  2341. promise and

  2342. kept changing

  2343. his wages

  2344. to get more

  2345. profit out of

  2346. him.

  2347. Jacob also

  2348. saw that

  2349. God had

  2350. increased

  2351. his own

  2352. wealth

  2353. under

  2354. impossible

  2355. circumstances.

  2356. So he

  2357. got wealth

  2358. and then he

  2359. got four

  2360. wives and

  2361. many children.

  2362. But even

  2363. then it

  2364. did not

  2365. give him

  2366. joy that

  2367. he was

  2368. looking for.

  2369. Someone

  2370. once said,

  2371. if you

  2372. think you

  2373. are perfect,

  2374. go and

  2375. get married.

  2376. you can

  2377. imagine Jacob's

  2378. marriage,

  2379. how chaotic

  2380. it would be,

  2381. how much

  2382. stress in

  2383. that marriage.

  2384. Imagine him

  2385. working the

  2386. whole day,

  2387. tired,

  2388. coming home,

  2389. different wives,

  2390. wonder his

  2391. attention,

  2392. children,

  2393. wonder his

  2394. attention.

  2395. It's a

  2396. messy,

  2397. very messy

  2398. life.

  2399. life,

  2400. and then

  2401. Jacob would

  2402. lose his

  2403. temper.

  2404. So Jacob,

  2405. this marriage

  2406. would quickly

  2407. help Jacob to

  2408. see how

  2409. flawed and

  2410. weak he

  2411. was.

  2412. He was no

  2413. better than

  2414. his father

  2415. Isaac.

  2416. He could

  2417. not love

  2418. his family

  2419. equally.

  2420. Even the

  2421. wife he

  2422. loved the

  2423. most,

  2424. Rachel,

  2425. almost betrayed

  2426. him when

  2427. she stole

  2428. Laban's idol

  2429. during the

  2430. escape from

  2431. Laban's

  2432. control.

  2433. When Jacob

  2434. saw his

  2435. own foolishness

  2436. and sinfulness,

  2437. he could

  2438. begin to

  2439. deny himself.

  2440. What did

  2441. Jacob see in

  2442. his heart?

  2443. You see,

  2444. he saw at

  2445. least four

  2446. things.

  2447. One,

  2448. Jacob began

  2449. to understand

  2450. what evil

  2451. was in

  2452. his interaction

  2453. with Laban.

  2454. And he saw

  2455. the same evil

  2456. in his heart.

  2457. Number two

  2458. is he began

  2459. to realize

  2460. that there was

  2461. a type of

  2462. love that

  2463. does not

  2464. care about

  2465. benefits.

  2466. And that

  2467. was the

  2468. love that

  2469. he wanted

  2470. from his

  2471. father.

  2472. He did

  2473. get it

  2474. from the

  2475. mom,

  2476. but that

  2477. wasn't

  2478. sufficient

  2479. because he

  2480. wanted

  2481. from his

  2482. father.

  2483. And that

  2484. was the

  2485. love that

  2486. Leah was

  2487. looking from

  2488. him.

  2489. Number three,

  2490. Jacob began

  2491. to long

  2492. for justice

  2493. when he

  2494. was mistreated.

  2495. But at

  2496. the same

  2497. time,

  2498. he knew

  2499. that he

  2500. had also

  2501. mistreated

  2502. others.

  2503. So the

  2504. justice

  2505. doesn't

  2506. only apply

  2507. to other

  2508. people,

  2509. it

  2510. apply to

  2511. himself

  2512. too.

  2513. Number four,

  2514. he began

  2515. to wish

  2516. for forgiveness

  2517. for all

  2518. the wrong

  2519. he had

  2520. done

  2521. because

  2522. justice

  2523. he couldn't

  2524. bear,

  2525. he couldn't

  2526. hope for

  2527. forgiveness.

  2528. Where does

  2529. one find the

  2530. display of

  2531. evil,

  2532. love,

  2533. justice,

  2534. and forgiveness?

  2535. In the cross.

  2536. When man

  2537. nailed Jesus

  2538. on the cross,

  2539. it was the

  2540. ultimate display

  2541. of evil.

  2542. And when

  2543. Jesus died

  2544. on the cross

  2545. for our

  2546. sins,

  2547. it was the

  2548. ultimate

  2549. display of

  2550. love,

  2551. justice,

  2552. and forgiveness.

  2553. Justice

  2554. because God's

  2555. wrath has

  2556. been satisfied.

  2557. Unless we

  2558. see our own

  2559. foolishness and

  2560. sinfulness,

  2561. we will not

  2562. deny ourselves.

  2563. We also

  2564. cannot deny

  2565. ourselves

  2566. unless or

  2567. until we see

  2568. someone who

  2569. is righteous,

  2570. pure,

  2571. and wise

  2572. for us to

  2573. turn to.

  2574. Many of us

  2575. live in the

  2576. red race.

  2577. We hardly

  2578. have time to

  2579. think about

  2580. our life.

  2581. We want to

  2582. be significant

  2583. and secure

  2584. and to have

  2585. love.

  2586. We all

  2587. lose our

  2588. life for

  2589. something or

  2590. someone.

  2591. It can be

  2592. your boyfriend,

  2593. your girlfriend,

  2594. children,

  2595. careers,

  2596. hobbies,

  2597. or addictions.

  2598. Only when

  2599. you lose

  2600. your life for

  2601. Jesus shall

  2602. you find

  2603. your soul.

  2604. I hope that

  2605. today you can

  2606. have time to

  2607. think how God

  2608. has been blessing

  2609. you in your

  2610. failures and

  2611. frustrations.

  2612. I hope that

  2613. you can deny

  2614. yourself and

  2615. turn your eyes

  2616. to the Lord

  2617. Jesus who

  2618. loved you and

  2619. gave his

  2620. life for you.

  2621. In denying

  2622. ourselves and

  2623. coming to

  2624. the Lord

  2625. Jesus Christ,

  2626. we will find

  2627. our souls.

  2628. Next week,

  2629. we shall see

  2630. what happened

  2631. when Jacob

  2632. found his

  2633. soul.

  2634. Let us

  2635. pray.

  2636. Amen.

  2637. Father, may

  2638. you speak

  2639. to our

  2640. hearts.

  2641. Help us

  2642. to see

  2643. care of

  2644. what is in

  2645. our hearts

  2646. and at

  2647. the same

  2648. time,

  2649. help us

  2650. to see

  2651. care of

  2652. the Lord

  2653. Jesus Christ

  2654. that we

  2655. might turn

  2656. to him.

  2657. Thank you,

  2658. Father,

  2659. for we pray

  2660. in Jesus'

  2661. name.

  2662. Amen.
