  1. Good morning everyone. We're going to read the Bible together now. Ephesians 4 verses 1 to 16.

    Ephesians 4:1–16

  2. So it's Ephesians 4 verses 1 to 16.

    Ephesians 4:1–16

  3. As a prisoner for the Lord then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.

  4. Be completely humble and gentle. Be patient, bearing with one another in love.

  5. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

  6. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called.

  7. One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

  8. But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.

  9. This is why it says,

  10. When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.

  11. What does he ascended mean, except that he also descended to the lower earthly regions?

  12. He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens in order to fill the whole universe.

  13. So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers to equip his people for works of service,

  14. so that the body of Christ may be built up, until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God,

  15. and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

  16. Then we will no longer be infants tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching,

  17. and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.

  18. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is Christ.

  19. From him, the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

  20. So now I'll turn with you to the Word of God, which Martin has really well introduced for me this morning.

  21. The idea that recognizing that something's true doesn't necessarily mean that we'll be motivated to change our behavior,

  22. so that it aligns with the truth.

  23. And this is particularly true, it's true of lots of areas, as Martin highlighted,

  24. but it's particularly true of Christians and ministry, I think.

  25. Last week, Dave began the series on every person ministry, focusing particularly on verses 7 and 11 and 12,

  26. and just that confronting fact that every Christian is a minister in Christ's church, in this local church.

  27. Put it in a very proactive way, if you're a Christian here this morning,

  28. then you should be saying to yourself on a regular basis, as Martin did with the kids,

  29. I am a minister of Christ in this local church family.

  30. I am a minister of Christ in this church family.

  31. Now, there's no opting out on the basis of inability,

  32. because we're told also, verse 7, that Christ has actually called us into this ministry,

  33. but actually equipped us for it.

  34. He's gifted us specifically for the ministry he's called us to.

  35. So there can be no opting out on the basis of inability.

  36. He intends you to be a minister of his in this church family.

  37. He's equipped you to be a minister of his in this church family.

  38. He's gifted you and intends you to nurture and develop those gifts,

  39. so that they might be nurtured and developed.

  40. So the question then shifts.

  41. Not is it a fact that you're a minister, but to the more practical question,

  42. are you ministering?

  43. Are you ministering or serving?

  44. The two words can be used interchangeably.

  45. Are you actually ministering or serving in this local church?

  46. And what makes the difference?

  47. What makes the difference in your mind between knowing something to be true,

  48. and perhaps feeling guilty if you're not doing it,

  49. and actually doing something because you're glad to do it?

  50. Now, it's not rocket science to say that none of us find trouble.

  51. None of us have trouble finding time or effort or money

  52. to pursue the things that are important to us,

  53. the things that we would say are valuable,

  54. things that we would say desirable.

  55. We do that without even blinking our eyes, don't we?

  56. Whether it's work or a sport or doing renovations at home

  57. or pursuing a particular hobby or leisure pursuit, holidays,

  58. or perhaps it's time to chase a girlfriend or a boyfriend,

  59. and the cost of that.

  60. Perhaps there's activities with your spouse, your children,

  61. catching up with friends, and so the list could go on and on and on.

  62. All those things are sort of a regular part of our lives,

  63. and we don't even think twice.

  64. We just find time, we find money, we find energy to do them.

  65. Why?

  66. Because they're desirable.

  67. They're valuable.

  68. They're important to us.

  69. So, what of helping one another to grow in Christ?

  70. Is this something that you would put right up there

  71. with things in your life that are really important,

  72. something that's really valuable and desirable?

  73. So, friends, the real issue is not one of knowledge,

  74. but one of motivation, priority.

  75. Motivation to minister or serve in our church family

  76. will simply be the overflow of what you think should happen in church

  77. or what you want to happen in church

  78. or what you demand to happen in church.

  79. Again, that which you believe to be important, valuable, and desirable

  80. when you think about church and your involvement in it.

  81. Now, at that point, you see, I think I have to say,

  82. and I have to include myself here,

  83. that the sad reality is that all too often

  84. our thinking and desires for church is far too small.

  85. Worse than that, sometimes our thinking and desires for church

  86. are actually contrary to Christ's intentions

  87. for his church and his say of people within the church.

  88. So, it works a bit like this.

  89. So, if you think of church just as a weekly box-taking activity,

  90. something that you know in the back of your mind is required for Christians,

  91. then you think, well, okay, I need to, as a Christian,

  92. I need to meet with other Christians,

  93. I need to read, I need to pray, I need to hear a sermon,

  94. then you'll actually be motivated to turn up to church,

  95. to take the boxes.

  96. Well, mostly motivated to turn up to church,

  97. because there might be some weeks you see

  98. there'll be another box-taking opportunity

  99. that's more appealing.

  100. And so, you find yourself easily being distracted into that.

  101. If you think of church,

  102. if you think of church like a club,

  103. where you hang out with people you like,

  104. a place where you have fun,

  105. it's meant to be a place of fun,

  106. a place where your children have other nice children to play with,

  107. a place where you can just relax,

  108. chat about your week, debrief,

  109. generally be happy and feel settled.

  110. It's my port in a week of stormy weather.

  111. A place where you can feel secure.

  112. A place where you can feel secure.

  113. A place where you can be accepted without any questions asked.

  114. No challenges.

  115. Then, I suspect,

  116. you'll be highly motivated

  117. to get involved

  118. in a church like ours,

  119. a local church family like ours.

  120. But I also suspect

  121. that your involvement

  122. will be very much as a selective consumer.

  123. That is,

  124. you'll almost,

  125. without thinking,

  126. invest in those people

  127. and serving those people

  128. and invest in those programs

  129. that you've already worked out

  130. will deliver the thing

  131. that you think you should get

  132. when you come to church.

  133. So, you will orientate yourself

  134. to those people

  135. or those programs

  136. on a very selective,

  137. consumerist basis.

  138. Friends,

  139. as lovely as these things are,

  140. and all the things I mentioned there

  141. are terrific things

  142. in relationship.

  143. Of course they are.

  144. As lovely as these things are,

  145. here's the rub.

  146. They can actually represent

  147. a redefinition

  148. of what serving ministry is.

  149. a redefinition

  150. from what Jesus defines us

  151. to something

  152. that you're comfortable with

  153. or something

  154. that you think it should be.

  155. You'll know that I'm back from holidays.

  156. Eeyore's back.

  157. Let me say something

  158. even more confronting.

  159. These sorts of things

  160. can even be the things

  161. that keep us from being

  162. what Christ wants us to be.

  163. Imagine that.

  164. the good things

  165. that you look forward to

  166. in our church family here

  167. might be the things

  168. that severely damage us

  169. as a church family.

  170. Now, that's almost

  171. counterintuitive

  172. to say that we could be damaged

  173. by niceness

  174. and happiness.

  175. We could be kept

  176. in a state

  177. of continual dysfunction

  178. by these sorts of things.

  179. A state of ill health,

  180. continuing ill health.

  181. A continual state

  182. of immaturity.

  183. It's not beyond

  184. the realms of possibility.

  185. And all the while

  186. thinking,

  187. wow, this is a good church.

  188. It's exactly what I want.

  189. So,

  190. the big question then is

  191. what does Christ

  192. expect to see

  193. as a pattern

  194. of your engagement

  195. in this church?

  196. Well, Dave opened

  197. the verse up

  198. with us last week.

  199. Verse 12,

  200. equipping the saints

  201. for the work of ministry,

  202. for building up

  203. the body of Christ

  204. until we all attend

  205. to the unity of the faith

  206. and of the knowledge

  207. of the Son of God

  208. to mature manhood

  209. to the measure

  210. of the stature

  211. of the fullness of Christ.

  212. What's that saying

  213. in summary terms?

  214. Jesus expects you,

  215. you individually,

  216. to do everything

  217. you can,

  218. humanly speaking,

  219. to make this church family

  220. look and sound

  221. and speak

  222. and feel,

  223. dare I say smell,

  224. I'm going through

  225. all the other senses,

  226. and smell like Jesus.

  227. Now, make no mistake,

  228. and we'll cover this

  229. in a couple of weeks' time,

  230. make no mistake,

  231. this sort of ministry

  232. will always involve

  233. huge cost.

  234. It will draw on your time,

  235. your money,

  236. your energy,

  237. your creative investment,

  238. and it will always

  239. have huge risks

  240. attached to it,

  241. being hurt,

  242. being worn out,

  243. being rejected,

  244. but it is what

  245. Christ himself

  246. calls us to.

  247. And should I also add,

  248. he calls us to

  249. has known

  250. all of those things

  251. in a way

  252. that we'll never know them.

  253. So this morning,

  254. I want to suggest

  255. that the best

  256. motivation to ministry,

  257. as Martin's already

  258. opened up before us,

  259. the best motivation

  260. to ministry

  261. is longing to see

  262. the beauty of Christ

  263. displayed and developed

  264. in one another.

  265. Longing to see

  266. the beauty of Christ

  267. displayed and developed

  268. in one another.

  269. I would suspect,

  270. and venture to say

  271. to you this morning,

  272. anything less than that,

  273. and we will find

  274. ministry

  275. just too hard.

  276. to do consistently.

  277. Anything less than that,

  278. and we'll find ministry

  279. too costly

  280. to hang in with.

  281. Anything less than that,

  282. and the likelihood is

  283. that we'll just

  284. settle into the church

  285. as a consumer.

  286. Perhaps a really active

  287. consumer,

  288. but a selective consumer.

  289. sporadic,

  290. selective,

  291. getting involved

  292. in ways,

  293. and perhaps only

  294. in ways,

  295. where we think

  296. we will get

  297. the personal returns

  298. that we want

  299. or demand

  300. or need.

  301. Now,

  302. a couple of headings

  303. and we'll move

  304. through this.

  305. And by the way,

  306. the introduction

  307. is going to be

  308. the longest part today,

  309. so don't despair.

  310. First major heading

  311. is ministry

  312. is the primary

  313. expression

  314. of your identity

  315. in Christ.

  316. Dave helpfully

  317. separated out

  318. last week

  319. identity and calling,

  320. and that division

  321. remains very clear.

  322. But ministry

  323. is a primary

  324. expression

  325. of identity

  326. as well

  327. by the same token.

  328. And in this,

  329. there's a great

  330. motivation there

  331. for it to ministry.

  332. In other words,

  333. the primary

  334. expression

  335. of ministry

  336. for me

  337. is a deep

  338. desire

  339. to show

  340. everyone

  341. who I now

  342. am at heart

  343. as one

  344. renewed

  345. by Christ.

  346. I want

  347. to be

  348. like Christ

  349. and I want

  350. others to see

  351. me being like

  352. Christ

  353. and I want

  354. others to benefit

  355. from me being

  356. like Christ

  357. that they might

  358. also become

  359. more like Christ.

  360. Again,

  361. look at verses

  362. 12 and 13,

  363. those verses.

  364. We all

  365. attend to the

  366. unity of

  367. the faith

  368. and of the

  369. knowledge

  370. of the Son

  371. of God

  372. to mature

  373. manhood

  374. to the measure

  375. of the stature

  376. of the fullness

  377. of Christ

  378. so that we

  379. may no longer

  380. be children

  381. but mature.

  382. put simply

  383. again,

  384. Jesus expects

  385. us to grow

  386. up.

  387. We start

  388. as children

  389. but Jesus

  390. expects us

  391. to grow up

  392. into mature

  393. Christian

  394. adults.

  395. Becoming

  396. ever more

  397. like him

  398. in the way

  399. we speak,

  400. in the way

  401. we think,

  402. in the way

  403. we present

  404. ourselves,

  405. and the way

  406. we behave.

  407. When people

  408. look into

  409. our church

  410. individually

  411. and together,

  412. when they look

  413. at us

  414. individually

  415. and together,

  416. when they look

  417. into our church,

  418. what should

  419. they see?

  420. They should

  421. see you

  422. individually

  423. being focused

  424. on being

  425. like Jesus

  426. in every way

  427. possible.

  428. and they

  429. should see

  430. you

  431. totally

  432. focused

  433. on helping

  434. every other

  435. person in

  436. this church

  437. family

  438. to do

  439. the same.

  440. Paul

  441. himself,

  442. Paul describes

  443. himself

  444. as a

  445. prisoner

  446. for the

  447. Lord.

  448. I do

  449. apologize

  450. for this

  451. cough

  452. which has

  453. already

  454. been outed.

  455. I'm not

  456. sure whether

  457. that was a

  458. good way

  459. of doing

  460. it or

  461. not,

  462. but I'm

  463. just going

  464. to return

  465. evil.

  466. No,

  467. hang on

  468. take,

  469. I got

  470. that

  471. wrong.

  472. Darn,

  473. I've been

  474. working on

  475. that line

  476. all through.

  477. I was going

  478. to return

  479. evil for

  480. good and

  481. I got

  482. it back

  483. to

  484. front.

  485. No,

  486. I still

  487. got it

  488. back to

  489. front.

  490. Oh,

  491. shut up

  492. and move

  493. on.

  494. Paul

  495. describes

  496. himself

  497. as a

  498. prisoner

  499. or slave

  500. of Christ.

  501. He's

  502. already

  503. used this

  504. picture of

  505. a prisoner

  506. in chapter

  507. 3,

  508. verses 1

  509. to 7.

  510. So that

  511. tells us

  512. I think

  513. it's a

  514. really

  515. important

  516. picture

  517. for

  518. Paul.

  519. Now,

  520. when he

  521. writes this

  522. letter,

  523. he actually

  524. literally

  525. is a

  526. prisoner

  527. of the

  528. Roman

  529. Empire

  530. because of

  531. his witness

  532. to Christ.

  533. But I

  534. don't think

  535. that's what

  536. he's referring

  537. to here.

  538. He's referring

  539. to a form

  540. of being a

  541. prisoner that's

  542. much,

  543. much more

  544. significant to

  545. him than

  546. that.

  547. That's just

  548. a circumstance.

  549. So when

  550. he says

  551. I'm a

  552. prisoner of

  553. Christ,

  554. I've actually

  555. got one,

  556. thank you,

  557. thank you very

  558. much.

  559. I just

  560. tried to

  561. avoid,

  562. thanks Alex.

  563. Sorry for

  564. drawing attention

  565. to myself

  566. guys.

  567. It's

  568. working,

  569. it's

  570. working.

  571. Paul's

  572. speaking of

  573. something far

  574. more significant

  575. for him.

  576. He's speaking

  577. of being

  578. Christ's

  579. prisoner by

  580. right of

  581. purchase.

  582. He's

  583. speaking of

  584. a deep

  585. sense of

  586. indebtedness

  587. for everything

  588. that he

  589. now is.

  590. He's been

  591. renewed.

  592. He's been

  593. forgiven.

  594. He's been

  595. freed from

  596. his sin.

  597. He's had

  598. the spirit

  599. put within

  600. him.

  601. He's been

  602. rebuilt from

  603. the inside

  604. out.

  605. And he

  606. knows

  607. therefore his

  608. life, his

  609. freedom, his

  610. future are

  611. all at

  612. Christ's

  613. disposal.

  614. That's what

  615. he has in

  616. mind with

  617. this sense of

  618. being a

  619. prisoner,

  620. being a

  621. captive,

  622. being a

  623. slave.

  624. He knows,

  625. go back to

  626. chapter one,

  627. he knows his

  628. indebtedness to

  629. Christ for

  630. every spiritual

  631. and physical

  632. blessing.

  633. Each one

  634. an evidence

  635. of God's

  636. goodness to

  637. him.

  638. And so

  639. Paul's

  640. saying,

  641. look, I

  642. am now

  643. happily,

  644. completely

  645. defined and

  646. shaped by my

  647. relationship to

  648. the Lord

  649. Jesus Christ.

  650. And that

  651. is to be

  652. the defining

  653. shape of

  654. my life

  655. going forward,

  656. says Paul.

  657. Even more

  658. than that,

  659. he knows he

  660. is a prisoner

  661. or slave

  662. given as a

  663. gift by

  664. Christ to

  665. his church.

  666. Paul

  667. understands

  668. the

  669. outcomes of

  670. Christ's

  671. investment in

  672. him.

  673. That this

  674. new self,

  675. that his

  676. new service

  677. gifts,

  678. that his

  679. sense of

  680. indebtedness to

  681. God's grace,

  682. all of that

  683. was pushing

  684. Paul to

  685. the time

  686. and the

  687. place and

  688. the context

  689. in which he

  690. would express

  691. all of that

  692. in the

  693. community of

  694. the church.

  695. And knowing

  696. all of that,

  697. Paul threw

  698. himself into

  699. serving others.

  700. And it

  701. cost him

  702. dearly.

  703. The idea of

  704. being God's

  705. gift to the

  706. church was

  707. anything but a

  708. burden to

  709. Paul.

  710. Indeed, it was a

  711. delight.

  712. because with

  713. the sense of

  714. indebtedness

  715. came the

  716. sense of

  717. privilege.

  718. That

  719. me, the

  720. worst of

  721. sinners, says

  722. Paul, should

  723. be used in

  724. such a

  725. formative way

  726. to build

  727. the church.

  728. Whoa, how

  729. does that get

  730. to be?

  731. Well, my

  732. friends, it's

  733. exactly the

  734. same for you

  735. and me in

  736. this church

  737. family.

  738. You have

  739. been taken

  740. captive by

  741. Jesus.

  742. You have

  743. been given

  744. every blessing

  745. of salvation

  746. and family

  747. membership.

  748. You have

  749. been given

  750. service gift

  751. ministries,

  752. service ministry

  753. gifts.

  754. And you've

  755. been gifted

  756. back into

  757. this local

  758. church family

  759. where you

  760. are now.

  761. Why?

  762. That you

  763. might expend

  764. your time,

  765. your money,

  766. your energy,

  767. your creativity,

  768. creativity,

  769. expressing that

  770. sense of

  771. indebtedness

  772. and that

  773. sense of

  774. privilege,

  775. helping us

  776. all become

  777. more like

  778. Jesus.

  779. Now, by

  780. definition, a

  781. gift, once

  782. it's given,

  783. belongs to

  784. the one it's

  785. given to.

  786. So, here's

  787. perhaps a

  788. challenge for

  789. you in the

  790. way you think

  791. about yourself

  792. in this

  793. church family.

  794. You are a

  795. gift given

  796. to this

  797. local church

  798. by the

  799. Lord Jesus

  800. Christ, which

  801. means, in a

  802. very real sense,

  803. that you belong

  804. to this church

  805. family.

  806. And that

  807. should be

  808. reflected in

  809. the way you

  810. serve.

  811. Not concerned

  812. for your own

  813. identity,

  814. not consumed

  815. by building

  816. your own

  817. reputation,

  818. not content

  819. just to have

  820. a nice,

  821. comfortable

  822. club people

  823. want to

  824. join that's

  825. popular in

  826. the community,

  827. not engaging

  828. only when you

  829. see opportunity

  830. for personal

  831. reward or

  832. return,

  833. not just

  834. serving when

  835. there are no

  836. other alternative

  837. demands on your

  838. time and energy.

  839. ministry.

  840. What a

  841. wonderful

  842. motivation to

  843. ministry.

  844. I don't know

  845. about you, but

  846. it's always nice

  847. to receive a

  848. gift.

  849. It's even

  850. nicer when

  851. you get a

  852. gift that's

  853. useful.

  854. Isn't that

  855. right?

  856. So here's a

  857. question for

  858. you.

  859. Have a

  860. think.

  861. Do you

  862. reckon

  863. others in

  864. this local

  865. church family

  866. would look at

  867. you and think,

  868. yeah, man,

  869. they're a

  870. useful gift.

  871. I'm so glad

  872. the Lord

  873. Jesus has

  874. given them

  875. to us.

  876. Now, let me

  877. apply this in

  878. one really

  879. specific way.

  880. And there's

  881. the danger

  882. now of

  883. sort of

  884. moving into

  885. something you'll

  886. take as

  887. guilt.

  888. I can't

  889. stop you

  890. doing that,

  891. but it's

  892. certainly not

  893. intended.

  894. Since

  895. resuming

  896. physical

  897. churching,

  898. just one

  899. application,

  900. but it

  901. sort of

  902. speaks across

  903. everything we

  904. do as a

  905. church family.

  906. Since

  907. resuming

  908. physical

  909. churching,

  910. we've had

  911. real

  912. difficulties

  913. with the

  914. serving

  915. teams

  916. rostered

  917. for

  918. cleaning.

  919. On

  920. quite a few

  921. weeks,

  922. out of

  923. teams of

  924. nine and

  925. ten that

  926. have been

  927. rostered,

  928. sometimes

  929. only one

  930. or two

  931. turn up.

  932. Now,

  933. why is

  934. that,

  935. do you

  936. think?

  937. Why is

  938. that,

  939. do you

  940. thinking?

  941. What

  942. thinking

  943. allows us

  944. to say

  945. so easily?

  946. Well,

  947. yeah,

  948. somebody else

  949. can do

  950. that,

  951. that famous

  952. person who's

  953. overworked in

  954. every congregation,

  955. somebody else.

  956. Because to

  957. say that

  958. assumes that

  959. their time is

  960. less important

  961. than your

  962. time,

  963. time.

  964. And that

  965. somehow or

  966. other,

  967. others have

  968. this quantity

  969. of non-allocated

  970. time that

  971. they can

  972. then take

  973. for cleaning.

  974. Or perhaps

  975. it means that

  976. you have a

  977. sense of

  978. yourself being

  979. gifted in a

  980. way that

  981. your gifts

  982. are far too

  983. significant to

  984. be involved in

  985. cleaning toilets

  986. or vacuuming

  987. a floor.

  988. or perhaps

  989. you just don't

  990. see cleaning

  991. as part of

  992. what's important

  993. in making

  994. this church

  995. family a

  996. good place,

  997. a comfortable

  998. place where

  999. we can learn

  1000. together on a

  1001. Sunday morning

  1002. because we

  1003. come in here

  1004. and the

  1005. building's

  1006. nicely set out,

  1007. the toilets

  1008. don't stink,

  1009. and the

  1010. whole thing

  1011. combines to

  1012. the best

  1013. context for

  1014. us to hear

  1015. the word of

  1016. God and

  1017. fellowship

  1018. together.

  1019. See,

  1020. there's

  1021. something missing

  1022. in the way

  1023. we think

  1024. about our

  1025. opportunity

  1026. and privilege

  1027. and responsibility

  1028. in serving.

  1029. Now that one

  1030. illustration,

  1031. it's only one

  1032. of umpteen

  1033. ministries in

  1034. the congregation,

  1035. and I have to

  1036. qualify that by

  1037. saying we as

  1038. elders are so

  1039. thankful that

  1040. so many people

  1041. minister in so

  1042. many ways on

  1043. any given week.

  1044. We understand

  1045. that and we're

  1046. deeply appreciative

  1047. of that.

  1048. But here's an

  1049. issue, and

  1050. perhaps it

  1051. reflects something

  1052. of our

  1053. thinking generally

  1054. about how we

  1055. engage in

  1056. ministry in

  1057. the church.

  1058. Let me move

  1059. on.

  1060. So ministry

  1061. is a primary

  1062. expression of

  1063. our identity,

  1064. and it's

  1065. totally focused

  1066. on forming

  1067. the mind

  1068. of Christ

  1069. in his

  1070. people.

  1071. Last week

  1072. Dave Bott

  1073. took us

  1074. through the

  1075. early chapters

  1076. of Ephesians

  1077. which underpinned

  1078. Paul's argument

  1079. in this whole

  1080. regard.

  1081. Paul's,

  1082. sorry,

  1083. God's purpose

  1084. was never

  1085. simply to save

  1086. us in isolation

  1087. or as

  1088. individuals.

  1089. His intention

  1090. was always to

  1091. save us into

  1092. a community,

  1093. a serving,

  1094. other person

  1095. centered community.

  1096. Now here's where

  1097. we've got to

  1098. qualify that

  1099. and spell it

  1100. out.

  1101. Never happy

  1102. just to be in

  1103. a community

  1104. of nice

  1105. people,

  1106. but always

  1107. aiming to

  1108. be a community

  1109. of holy

  1110. people

  1111. in which

  1112. family likeness

  1113. is everywhere.

  1114. I had

  1115. Christian Dooley

  1116. and his

  1117. sister

  1118. hanging out

  1119. the other

  1120. morning at our

  1121. place and I

  1122. was just

  1123. looking for

  1124. them.

  1125. One's a boy,

  1126. one's a girl

  1127. obviously,

  1128. and I was

  1129. just looking

  1130. back and

  1131. forth and

  1132. thinking,

  1133. these are

  1134. two peas

  1135. in a pod.

  1136. Well,

  1137. mind you,

  1138. people say

  1139. that,

  1140. me and my

  1141. brother as

  1142. well.

  1143. But you

  1144. see,

  1145. there's

  1146. something

  1147. really nice

  1148. about that.

  1149. People should

  1150. look at our

  1151. church and

  1152. say,

  1153. whoa,

  1154. everywhere I

  1155. look,

  1156. I'm seeing

  1157. family likeness.

  1158. I'm seeing

  1159. the likeness

  1160. of Jesus.

  1161. I'm hearing

  1162. the likeness

  1163. of Jesus.

  1164. And it's

  1165. expressed in

  1166. two very

  1167. practical

  1168. characteristics,

  1169. unity

  1170. and maturity.

  1171. how will

  1172. we most

  1173. demonstrate

  1174. the changing

  1175. power of

  1176. the gospel?

  1177. How will

  1178. we most

  1179. demonstrate

  1180. the changing

  1181. power of

  1182. the gospel?

  1183. Answer,

  1184. very simple,

  1185. the first few

  1186. verses of

  1187. chapter four.

  1188. When our

  1189. practical unity

  1190. aligns with

  1191. the spiritual

  1192. unity we

  1193. already enjoy

  1194. in Christ.

  1195. When those

  1196. two overlay

  1197. are

  1198. the changing

  1199. power of

  1200. the gospel

  1201. in a big

  1202. way.

  1203. That can

  1204. only happen,

  1205. as we see in

  1206. those early

  1207. verses,

  1208. when we've

  1209. got Christ's

  1210. attitudes to

  1211. each other.

  1212. When we're as

  1213. generous and

  1214. excusing of

  1215. others as we

  1216. are of

  1217. ourselves.

  1218. When we're

  1219. determined to

  1220. expend all our

  1221. resources for

  1222. others in the

  1223. church family.

  1224. When we're

  1225. quick to

  1226. identify relational

  1227. difficulties and

  1228. equally quick to

  1229. move to mend

  1230. fences that are

  1231. broken relationally.

  1232. And proper

  1233. unity is

  1234. actually

  1235. inseparable from

  1236. maturity,

  1237. which is the

  1238. other practical

  1239. expression of the

  1240. changing power of

  1241. the gospel.

  1242. If you look at

  1243. verses 14 and

  1244. 15,

  1245. so that we may

  1246. no longer be

  1247. children,

  1248. and goes on to

  1249. describe a few

  1250. more things.

  1251. things.

  1252. There's no room

  1253. in Christ's

  1254. church for

  1255. ongoing

  1256. childish

  1257. behavior,

  1258. childish

  1259. tantrums,

  1260. selfish

  1261. indulgence.

  1262. Yet, my

  1263. friends, it's so

  1264. common to see

  1265. just these

  1266. sorts of

  1267. childish

  1268. reactions in

  1269. relationships and

  1270. to the failures

  1271. of others.

  1272. it's common

  1273. to see what's

  1274. known as a

  1275. syndrome of

  1276. perpetual

  1277. adolescence.

  1278. Now, that's a

  1279. syndrome in

  1280. itself, but it

  1281. applies well in

  1282. the church.

  1283. A syndrome of

  1284. perpetual

  1285. adolescence among

  1286. Christians, and

  1287. especially young

  1288. Christians, not

  1289. exclusively young

  1290. Christians, but it's

  1291. especially true

  1292. among young

  1293. Christians.

  1294. What is

  1295. perpetual

  1296. adolescence?

  1297. Well, essentially,

  1298. it's a refusal to

  1299. grow up.

  1300. It's a refusal to

  1301. see church, as we're

  1302. applying it here

  1303. now, as something

  1304. that's more than

  1305. fun.

  1306. It's a refusal to

  1307. step up and take

  1308. responsibility and

  1309. say, look, I'm not

1310. just here to have a

  1311. good old time and

  1312. cruise.

1313. I need to work with

  1314. these people and for

  1315. these people to become

  1316. mature, to become more

  1317. like Christ.

  1318. Now, perpetual

  1319. adolescence is bad

1320. enough when you see it

  1321. in young people.

1322. When you see it in

1323. people in their 40s and

  1324. 50s and 60s, then

1325. you think, man, this is a

  1326. chronic condition.

  1327. Refusing to nurture

  1328. gifts, refusing to

  1329. grow up, refusing to

  1330. step up into

  1331. serving roles.

  1332. Maturity will only

1333. come when we dig into

  1334. God's word and have

1335. it change us from the

  1336. inside out.

1337. We know the truth of

  1338. God's word.

  1339. That's all in those

  1340. verses 13 and 14.

1341. We know the truth of

  1342. God's word and are

  1343. prepared to speak the

1344. truth in love into the

  1345. lives of those around

  1346. us.

  1347. I'll be saying more

1348. about that in a couple

  1349. of weeks' time.

  1350. That's a big one, to

1351. speak the truth in love.

  1352. To have the hard

  1353. conversations because we

1354. want to grow up in

1355. Christ and want that for

  1356. everyone around us.

  1357. friends, the point's very

  1358. obvious.

1359. If we're not doing that,

  1360. if we're not

  1361. demonstrating the

  1362. changing power of the

  1363. gospel, then I would

1364. suggest to you today that

  1365. we're actually making the

  1366. gospel a bit of a joke.

1367. I mean, what is the

1368. point of the gospel if

  1369. there's no changing power

  1370. attached to it?

1371. So once again, let me

1372. apply it in a very raw

  1373. way.

  1374. What difference do you

  1375. think being motivated to

1376. form the mind of Christ in

1377. yourself and the lives of

  1378. others in this church

  1379. family, what difference do

1380. you think that might make

  1381. today?

1382. If that was your primary

1383. concern, if that was your

  1384. passionate concern, if that's

1385. what you saw as valuable

1386. above all else today, how

1387. might that change who you

1388. might seek out and speak

  1389. to today?

1390. And why you might seek

1391. them out and speak to

  1392. them?

1393. And how you might seek

1394. them out and speak to

  1395. them?

1396. What might that say about

  1397. your commitment to small

1398. groups or growth groups as

  1399. we call them, both

  1400. attending regularly so that

  1401. you're a support to the

1402. rest of the crew rather than

  1403. send yourself, well, look,

  1404. there's a half a dozen

  1405. there.

  1406. They won't miss me.

  1407. Or engaging thoroughly.

1408. You can be there and warm

1409. a seat, but not much more.

1410. Or praying for others in

1411. the group when you're not

  1412. there.

1413. Engaging with others at their

  1414. points of need and

  1415. difficulty.

1416. How might that make a

  1417. difference when, to your

1418. priority, when you know a

  1419. relationship with someone

1420. else in the church is under

  1421. pressure or seriously

  1422. broken?

  1423. Is it a childish, well, it's

  1424. their fault.

  1425. They've hurt me.

1426. And they'll have to come and

  1427. speak to me.

1428. Or a mature adult Christian

1429. response of, hey, we can't

  1430. allow this to happen.

1431. We need to get this sorted.

  1432. We need to talk.

1433. We need to get this fixed.

  1434. And that ultimately displays

  1435. God's manifold wisdom.

  1436. And brings him honor.

  1437. Chapter 3, verse 10.

1438. So, today I'm offering you two

  1439. sort of major motivations.

  1440. One's more immediate.

  1441. The more immediate motivation

1442. to selfless serving ministry is

1443. to see the changing power of the

  1444. gospel.

1445. as the mind and heart of Christ

1446. is formed in each of us

  1447. individually and in us

  1448. collectively.

  1449. As that's the immediate

  1450. motivation.

  1451. So, the ultimate motivation

1452. then is that God's wisdom in

1453. salvation will be seen by all.

1454. And God will be honored as he

  1455. should be.

1456. Dave took us through chapter 3,

  1457. verse 10 last week.

1458. You can refer back to it.

1459. So, I want you to imagine this.

1460. Remember back in Romans chapter 1

    Romans 1 chapter mention

1461. Paul launches into the argument

1462. of how when we look at the

  1463. physical creation

  1464. we're overwhelmed.

1465. Because we see in the physical

1466. creation a display of the

1467. character and power of God.

1468. What Paul wants us to see here

1469. is that the glory that ought to

  1470. come to the Lord

  1471. through this local church,

  1472. community of renewed

  1473. sinners

1474. is something that ought to

  1475. dwarf anything

1476. that we see in creation.

1477. And it will show the wisdom of

  1478. God, chapter 3, verse 10,

1479. the wisdom of God in salvation

1480. and cause people to fall down in

  1481. amazement and wonder before.

1482. There can be no better motivation

1483. to throw yourself into ministry

  1484. than a desire for God's glory.

1485. Again, make it just very simple

  1486. and practical.

1487. If you want to see God's name

1488. glorified in Newcastle and beyond,

  1489. it starts with selfless,

  1490. committed,

  1491. serving ministry

  1492. in this local church.

1493. Nothing else will motivate you

  1494. to happily

  1495. and totally expend yourself

  1496. and your resources.

1497. Nothing else will motivate you

  1498. to set good priorities

  1499. for you

  1500. and your family

  1501. in terms of engaging

1502. in this local church family.

1503. Nothing else will motivate you

1504. to give the best of your time,

1505. your money and your energy

1506. to serving this church family

  1507. over sport or work

1508. or a dozen other things

  1509. that claim your attention

1510. and your time and your money.

1511. Nothing else will motivate you

  1512. to steady, persevering ministry

1513. when you hit the wall

  1514. of tiredness,

  1515. disappointment

  1516. or hurt

  1517. or injustice

1518. or so many other challenges

  1519. that come with ministry.

  1520. Risks and costs,

1521. all of them associated with ministry.

  1522. As I say,

  1523. we'll address those things

  1524. in two weeks' time.

1525. ministry will always be costly.

  1526. There's no alternative.

  1527. Not ministering

1528. to your brothers and sisters

1529. will be far more costly

  1530. in terms of

  1531. leaving the gospel

  1532. without any claim

  1533. to changing power

1534. and robbing God of his glory.

  1535. Pray with me, please.

  1536. Lord, we thank you

  1537. for your word.

  1538. We thank you for

1539. the fact that your word

  1540. never just allows us

1541. to slide over it easily.

1542. Lord, it calls us out.

  1543. It exposes us.

  1544. It challenges us.

1545. But Lord, it also renews us

  1546. and equips us

  1547. and gives us

  1548. great confidence

  1549. and comfort

  1550. to move forward

  1551. into new

  1552. displays

  1553. of your character

  1554. as we grow

  1555. and mature.

  1556. Help us, Lord,

  1557. to do that

  1558. individually and together.

  1559. In Jesus' name.

  1560. Amen.

  1561. Thank you very much.

  1562. Thank you very much.

  1563. Thank you.

  1564. so
