  1. Will you read with me Matthew 2 verses 1 to 12?

    Matthew 2:1–12

  2. That's Matthew 2 verses 1 to 12.

    Matthew 2:1–12

  3. After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod,

  4. Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked,

  5. Where is the one who has been born King of the Jews?

  6. We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.

  7. When King Herod heard this, he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.

  8. When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law,

  9. he asked them where the Messiah was to be born.

  10. In Bethlehem in Judea, they replied, for this is what the prophet has written.

  11. But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah.

  12. For out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.

  13. Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.

  14. He sent them to Bethlehem and said,

  15. Go and search carefully for the child.

  16. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.

  17. After they had heard the king, they went on their way,

  18. and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them

  19. until it stopped over the place where the child was.

  20. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.

  21. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary,

  22. and they bowed down and worshipped him.

  23. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

  24. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod,

  25. they returned to their country by another route.

  26. Well, good morning, everyone.

  27. Will you pray with me as we come to God's word?

  28. Let's pray together.

  29. Father, we need you to give us ears to hear you.

  30. Give us hearts that are ready to listen to what you have to say in your word in Matthew.

  31. So we pray that you would be speaking to us through Matthew,

  32. and that you would give us these hearts that are ready to listen to you.

  33. The world wants us to believe all sorts of things.

  34. Help us to be discerning and to listen to your truth instead.

  35. We pray for your help.

  36. In Jesus' name.

  37. Amen.

  38. Well, the famous comedian, Ricky Gervais, is pretty outspoken that believing in God is just ridiculous.

  39. He once tweeted,

  40. If you want to deny something, don't choose evolution or the Holocaust.

  41. You'll look silly.

  42. Way too much evidence.

  43. Choose a God or homeopathy.

  44. Another tweet.

  45. Everyone has the right to believe anything they want.

  46. And everyone else has the right to find it ridiculous.

  47. Or in an interview,

  48. I don't believe in God because there is absolutely no scientific evidence for his existence.

  49. Have you ever thought,

  50. If only God made himself clearer,

  51. it would be easier to believe in him?

  52. What we're going to hear today in Matthew's history of Jesus' life

  53. is going to show us that there's an even deeper reason

  54. why we struggle to trust and believe in God.

  55. So let's have a look at this story.

  56. So yeah, this story of the wise men,

  57. it's a famous one at Christmastime.

  58. It's a very pleasant children's story.

  59. In our scientific age,

  60. we might find the idea of a star appearing in the sky quite unusual,

  61. to say the least.

  62. But in Mesopotamia,

  63. which was kind of our modern-day Iraq,

  64. just to the east of Israel,

  65. which is probably where these magi were from.

  66. And in other parts of the world,

  67. there was quite a sophisticated development of the study of the stars,

  68. thinking that you get divine information through observing the stars.

  69. So these magi,

  70. these astrologers,

  71. would have been advising their kings and their rulers.

  72. They would have been court officials.

  73. So when Nero became emperor of Rome,

  74. historians record a visit from Magi to pay their respects.

  75. So this kind of visit wasn't entirely unusual,

  76. but what happened with the story of Jesus is unique.

  77. From their home,

  78. perhaps in Babylon,

  79. they see a star rising.

  80. And some have attempted to work out what this star was.

  81. So some think it was Halley's Comet.

  82. But that was recorded in 12 BC.

  83. And Jesus was born about 4 BC.

  84. I know that before Christ,

  85. that doesn't quite make sense,

  86. but there's this discrepancy

  87. that got worked out later on.

  88. So Halley's Comet,

  89. not quite lining up,

  90. but Saturn and Jupiter aligning.

  91. But that was in 7 BC.

  92. Some think it might have been a star coming into being,

  93. a nova or supernova exploding star.

  94. So Chinese records,

  95. talk about in 5 BC.

  96. We don't really know is the short answer.

  97. And it's not really the point.

  98. What's most surprising

  99. is that the Bible

  100. is pretty clear in telling us

  101. not to seek out special information

  102. through like omens and mediums

  103. and psychics and astrology.

  104. But without criticism here,

  105. there is no criticism.

  106. Here are these foreigners to God's people,

  107. potentially from Babylon,

  108. the enemy of God's people,

  109. probably ignorant of God's promises

  110. in the Old Testament,

  111. seeing this rising star.

  112. And what do they do with this information?

  113. Well, the emphasis on the star rising

  114. is Matthew wanting us to think

  115. of the prophecy in Numbers 24, 17,

  116. during the days of Moses,

  117. like 1,400 years earlier.

  118. So the prophecy was,

  119. a star shall come out of Jacob

  120. and a scepter shall rise out of Israel.

  121. A ruler will come,

  122. in other words.

  123. These foreign astrologers,

  124. seeing this divine sign,

  125. come to Jerusalem,

  126. the city of the king of Israel.

  127. Now, they would have had to walk

  128. or ride animals

  129. for over 1,000 kilometres.

  130. Imagine putting that in Jerusalem

  131. into Google Maps

  132. and it says,

  133. two months

  134. to get there.

  135. You might think twice

  136. about the journey

  137. and that's just one way.

  138. But they come.

  139. Naturally,

  140. they go to King Herod,

  141. but he doesn't have a son

  142. that young

  143. to fit the bill.

  144. And so word apparently spread

  145. throughout all Jerusalem

  146. with the hope

  147. of God's promises

  148. in Jewish ears

  149. and in their hearts.

  150. This gossip

  151. would have spread quickly.

  152. Could it really be happening?

  153. After 400 years

  154. of silence from God,

  155. could the son of David

  156. have arrived?

  157. Herod certainly thinks so

  158. because he asked

  159. the chief priests

  160. when the Messiah,

  161. where he was to be born.

  162. Is the everlasting kingdom

  163. of righteousness

  164. and peace

  165. finally here?

  166. Is the king here?

  167. I think it should have been like

  168. if you're a prisoner of war

  169. in World War II.

  170. My grandfather

  171. was a prisoner of war

  172. in World War II.

  173. Could you imagine that,

  174. being a prisoner of war?

  175. And imagine

  176. someone

  177. comes and whispers

  178. in your ear

  179. away from

  180. the officers

  181. in charge of you

  182. and just whispers

  183. that the allies

  184. have invaded Berlin.

  185. The war is almost over.

  186. You can have a full meal again.

  187. You can go home.

  188. That cold, dark night

  189. is about to change.

  190. The light

  191. is coming up.

  192. That's what it should have felt like,

  193. this news.

  194. But what's Herod

  195. and all Jerusalem's reaction

  196. in verse 3?

  197. They're troubled.

  198. They're troubled.

  199. It's a word

  200. for inner turmoil.

  201. They were afraid.

  202. Why?

  203. This should have been

  204. awesome news.

  205. Why were they afraid?

  206. I think maybe

  207. Acts chapter 5

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  208. gives us a hint.

  209. In living memory,

  210. there had been

  211. at least two

  212. widely known instances

  213. where a man

  214. claimed to be somebody

  215. leading Jews

  216. to rebel

  217. against the authority

  218. of Rome.

  219. And for both

  220. these men,

  221. Judas and Theodos,

  222. Rome came crashing down

  223. and killed them

  224. and killed

  225. those who followed them

  226. very quickly.

  227. This is politically

  228. dangerous news

  229. that a king had come

  230. who wasn't appointed

  231. by Rome.

  232. Maybe they were afraid

  233. of Rome.

  234. I was intrigued

  235. that the word

  236. troubled

  237. is the same one

  238. used in

  239. a Greek translation

  240. of Isaiah 8

    Isaiah 8:12

  241. verse 12

  242. which is

  243. surrounded by

  244. this promise

  245. of Emmanuel.

  246. I'm just raising it

  247. because I would love

  248. to just

  249. get you guys

  250. to tell me

  251. what you think.

  252. Go away and read

  253. Isaiah 7 to 9

  254. and think

  255. is Matthew

  256. using Isaiah

  257. 7 to 9

  258. in his story

  259. of Jesus coming?

  260. I'd love to hear

  261. your thoughts.

  262. As you look at it,

  263. look how

  264. the promise

  265. of Emmanuel

  266. is God with us.

  267. God can be with us

  268. in judgment

  269. and God can be with us

  270. for salvation.

  271. The sign

  272. has both

  273. emphases

  274. in Isaiah.

  275. So I'd love

  276. to hear your thoughts.

  277. So Herod and Jerusalem,

  278. they were probably

  279. afraid of Rome.

  280. Maybe Jerusalem

  281. was afraid of Herod,

  282. what he would do

  283. to protect his throne

  284. which,

  285. yeah,

  286. as we're going

  287. to see next week,

  288. there would be good

  289. reason to be afraid

  290. of Herod.

  291. So we might be

  292. sympathetic to this fear.

  293. But this isn't

  294. just some ordinary man

  295. claiming to be somebody.

  296. If this really is

  297. God's eternal king,

  298. could Rome

  299. stop him?

  300. Could Rome

  301. stop God?

  302. Surely not.

  303. Well,

  304. I think they were afraid

  305. to lose their current

  306. way of life.

  307. I think they would

  308. rather keep

  309. the status quo.

  310. Even though it's

  311. not perfect,

  312. they'd rather not

  313. rock the boat.

  314. Like Israel,

  315. after just being

  316. delivered from

  317. slavery in Egypt,

  318. heading towards

  319. the promised land,

  320. because of just

  321. a little bit of

  322. hardship,

  323. they longed to be

  324. back in slavery

  325. in Egypt.

  326. they feared the

  327. life they had.

  328. And Herod

  329. leads the way

  330. in this self-protection,

  331. this protecting

  332. of their life.

  333. So Herod

  334. and the people

  335. had God,

  336. they didn't just

  337. have a star,

  338. they had

  339. much more

  340. specific revelation

  341. from God.

  342. Herod summons

  343. all the chief

  344. priests,

  345. all the experts

  346. in the law,

  347. the experts

  348. in the Bible

  349. and asks when

  350. the Messiah

  351. was to be born.

  352. This is a really

  353. simple question.

  354. It should have

  355. been common

  356. knowledge.

  357. It's a bit

  358. surprising that

  359. Herod even

  360. asked this

  361. question.

  362. The prophet

  363. Micah,

    Micah 5:2

  364. chapter 5,

  365. verse 2,

  366. it was very

  367. clear.

  368. The Messiah

  369. is going to

  370. come in

  371. King David's

  372. own town

  373. of Bethlehem.

  374. I'm going to

  375. read the

  376. original quote

  377. from Micah.

  378. But you,

  379. O Bethlehem,

  380. Ephathrath,

  381. I don't know

  382. how to say

  383. that,

  384. who are too

  385. little to be

  386. among the

  387. clans of

  388. Judah,

  389. from you

  390. shall come

  391. forth from

  392. me,

  393. one who

  394. is to

  395. be ruler

  396. in Israel,

  397. whose coming

  398. forth is

  399. from old,

  400. from ancient

  401. days.

  402. Therefore he

  403. shall give

  404. them up

  405. until the

  406. time when

  407. she who

  408. is in

  409. labor has

  410. given birth.

  411. Then the

  412. rest of his

  413. brothers shall

  414. return to

  415. the people

  416. of Israel,

  417. and he

  418. shall stand

  419. and shepherd

  420. his flock

  421. in the

  422. strength of

  423. the Lord,

  424. in the

  425. majesty of

  426. the name

  427. of the

  428. Lord his

  429. God,

  430. and they

  431. shall dwell

  432. secure.

  433. For now he

  434. shall be

  435. great to

  436. the ends

  437. of the

  438. earth,

  439. and he

  440. shall be

  441. their

  442. peace.

  443. To make

  444. it even

  445. clearer for

  446. us,

  447. Matthew

  448. kind of

  449. meshes

  450. into this

  451. quote,

  452. 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 5:2

  453. chapter 5

  454. verse 2.

  455. You might

  456. think that's

  457. just a

  458. random part

  459. of the

  460. Bible.

  461. It's not

  462. random.

  463. This is

  464. the moment

  465. that King

  466. David is

  467. enthroned

  468. over Israel.

  469. This part

  470. that's

  471. meshed in.

  472. And Matthew

  473. just starts

  474. this story,

  475. it almost

  476. seems like

  477. minor biographical

  478. detail,

  479. saying these

  480. things happened

  481. after Jesus

  482. was born in

  483. Bethlehem.

  484. But this is

  485. big news,

  486. that he was

  487. born in

  488. Bethlehem.

  489. Can you

  490. get any

  491. clearer than

  492. that?

  493. Herod and

  494. Jerusalem had

  495. all the

  496. light of

  497. knowledge of

  498. what God

  499. has said,

  500. and what

  501. did they do

  502. with it?

  503. They were

  504. troubled,

  505. they were

  506. afraid.

  507. I think

  508. they feared

  509. to lose

  510. the degree

  511. of control

  512. that they

  513. had over

  514. their lives.

  515. Herod feared

  516. to lose

  517. his control.

  518. His throne

  519. was under

  520. threat.

  521. I think

  522. we see

  523. this in

  524. all Herod's

  525. scheming.

  526. He said

  527. with his

  528. lips that

  529. he wanted

  530. to come

  531. and worship

  532. this king,

  533. but his

  534. behaviour

  535. tells a

  536. very different

  537. story.

  538. Bethlehem

  539. is just

  540. 15 kilometres

  541. south to

  542. Jerusalem.

  543. It's like

  544. from here

  545. to Toronto.

  546. He didn't

  547. bother.

  548. The Magi

  549. travel for

  550. months.

  551. He didn't

  552. bother a

  553. few hours

  554. walk.

  555. If he

  556. really wanted

  557. to come

  558. and worship

  559. that king,

  560. it would

  561. be quite

  562. easy to

  563. do so.

  564. He didn't

  565. need to

  566. summon all

  567. the chief

  568. priests and

  569. the scribes.

  570. Why did

  571. he summon

  572. all?

  573. He needed

  574. one, if

  575. that, because

  576. it was pretty

  577. common knowledge.

  578. I reckon

  579. that's a

  580. political move.

  581. I think

  582. he's sending

  583. a message

  584. to the

  585. chief

  586. priest,

  587. I'm in

  588. charge of

  589. this

  590. situation.

  591. I could

  592. be wrong

  593. about that.

  594. But he

  595. summons all

  596. and then

  597. immediately

  598. after,

  599. he has

  600. a secret

  601. meeting.

  602. He has

  603. a secret

  604. meeting with

  605. the Magi

  606. to find

  607. out when

  608. the star

  609. had appeared

  610. and from

  611. the next

  612. week's

  613. story,

  614. it's at

  615. least within

  616. two years.

  617. He wanted

  618. to keep

  619. this knowledge

  620. secret,

  621. just he

  622. knew it.

  623. He's trying

  624. to keep

  625. control of

  626. this situation.

  627. And then

  628. he gives

  629. these foreign

  630. visitors

  631. orders.

  632. He's got

  633. no jurisdiction

  634. over them.

  635. He's trying

  636. to control

  637. them under

  638. the pretense

  639. of wanting

  640. to worship.

  641. He's trying

  642. to control

  643. this threat

  644. to his

  645. throne.

  646. I don't

  647. think we

  648. can be

  649. sure that

  650. he had

  651. murderous

  652. intent at

  653. this point,

  654. but at

  655. the very

  656. least he

  657. was trying

  658. to stay

  659. in control.

  660. now we

  661. can

  662. tsk,

  663. tsk

  664. Herod

  665. and

  666. distance

  667. ourselves

  668. from him,

  669. but I

  670. wonder if

  671. we're really

  672. that different.

  673. So for

  674. instance,

  675. are you

  676. here today

  677. to sign

  678. off on

  679. your religious

  680. duty so

  681. that the

  682. rest of

  683. your week

  684. is yours

  685. to do

  686. with what

  687. you want?

  688. Or are

  689. you here

  690. to listen

  691. to God

  692. through his

  693. word so

  694. that you

  695. are renewed

  696. again to

  697. live another

  698. week for

  699. his sake?

  700. It's going

  701. to look very

  702. similar on

  703. the surface.

  704. One is

  705. trying to

  706. control God

  707. so that you

  708. can stay

  709. in control

  710. of your

  711. life.

  712. The other

  713. is giving

  714. yourself to

  715. God.

  716. I wonder

  717. how else

  718. we try

  719. and keep

  720. Jesus in

  721. his little

  722. corner and

  723. keep him

  724. away from

  725. the throne

  726. of our

  727. lives.

  728. Contrast

  729. this with

  730. the foreign

  731. astrologers

  732. who only

  733. have a

  734. star to

  735. go by.

  736. Although

  737. they appear

  738. to be

  739. obeying

  740. Herod,

  741. they are

  742. actually

  743. following

  744. the one

  745. who's

  746. actually

  747. in

  748. control.

  749. The

  750. star

  751. they had

  752. seen

  753. appeared

  754. again

  755. and it

  756. moved.

  757. Not

  758. really sure

  759. how this

  760. worked,

  761. but it

  762. moved.

  763. This is

  764. supernatural

  765. stuff.

  766. We're not

  767. told exactly

  768. how but it

  769. directed them

  770. to the

  771. exact place,

  772. the exact

  773. house where

  774. Jesus was.

  775. God was

  776. drawing them

  777. to his

  778. king.

  779. Now I

  780. think I

  781. need to

  782. make clear

  783. the point

  784. of the

  785. Magal

  786. being more

  787. sincere in

  788. following the

  789. star than

  790. the Jews

  791. were in

  792. following God's

  793. word.

  794. I don't

  795. think that's

  796. meant to

  797. discourage

  798. us from

  799. finding God

  800. through his

  801. written word.

  802. We're not

  803. meant to

  804. leave here

  805. and go

  806. get our

  807. palm read

  808. or go

  809. read our

  810. horoscopes.

  811. It's not

  812. what this

  813. text is

  814. trying to

  815. get us

  816. to do.

  817. We're not

  818. meant to

  819. look for

  820. signs like

  821. God if you

  822. want me to

  823. buy that

  824. car make

  825. this traffic

  826. light go

  827. green.

  828. We're not

  829. meant to

  830. do that.

  831. the whole

  832. point of

  833. Matthew

  834. writing this

  835. book is

  836. so that we

  837. would clearly

  838. know Jesus.

  839. God isn't

  840. condoning

  841. astrology

  842. but I

  843. think it

  844. does show

  845. us that

  846. God is

  847. willing to

  848. meet people

  849. where they're

  850. at and

  851. draw them

  852. to himself.

  853. I think

  854. that's the

  855. main point

  856. we're meant

  857. to take.

  858. God is

  859. willing to

  860. meet these

  861. Magi

  862. where they're

  863. at and

  864. draw them

  865. to himself.

  866. I think

  867. the lesson

  868. we're meant

  869. to get

  870. the contrast

  871. between Herod

  872. and Jerusalem

  873. and these

  874. foreigners

  875. is at the

  876. level of the

  877. attitude of

  878. their heart.

  879. Something very

  880. different is

  881. going on.

  882. Instead of

  883. fear,

  884. having been

  885. shown the

  886. way to

  887. King Jesus,

  888. isn't this a

  889. lovely phrase,

  890. they rejoiced

  891. exceedingly

  892. with great

  893. joy.

  894. I want

  895. more of

  896. that.

  897. Don't

  898. you?

  899. They

  900. rejoiced

  901. exceedingly

  902. with great

  903. joy.

  904. I want

  905. more of

  906. that.

  907. Instead

  908. of trying

  909. to maintain

  910. control,

  911. when they

  912. enter the

  913. home,

  914. they express

  915. the giving

  916. up of

  917. their control

  918. by falling

  919. at his

  920. feet.

  921. The point

  922. of mentioning

  923. Mary being

  924. there is

  925. not to

  926. suggest that

  927. she deserved

  928. worship as

  929. well.

  930. the verse

  931. clearly says

  932. they fell

  933. down and

  934. worshipped

  935. him.

  936. I think

  937. mentioning

  938. Mary,

  939. I'm not

  940. sure of

  941. this,

  942. but I

  943. think

  944. mentioning

  945. Mary without

  946. Joseph is

  947. maybe Matthew's

  948. way of

  949. suggesting that

  950. these

  951. worshippers

  952. knew of

  953. the scandalous

  954. beginnings of

  955. the virgin

  956. birth and

  957. the birth

  958. prior to

  959. marriage.

  960. They

  961. trusted that

  962. God had

  963. led them to

  964. the true

  965. king,

  966. despite the

  967. rest of

  968. society,

  969. despising

  970. and rejecting

  971. Jesus.

  972. I think

  973. that's what's

  974. going on

  975. here.

  976. Instead of

  977. trying to

  978. protect the

  979. life they

  980. had like

  981. Herod over

  982. his little

  983. kingdom and

  984. all Jerusalem

  985. trying to

  986. protect their

  987. city,

  988. there's another

  989. lovely phrase,

  990. they opened

  991. up their

  992. treasures.

  993. Matthew could

  994. have just

  995. said,

  996. and they

  997. gave gifts,

  998. but he's got

  999. this little

  1000. phrase,

  1001. they opened

  1002. up their

  1003. treasures.

  1004. They weren't

  1005. trying to

  1006. protect it,

  1007. they opened

  1008. it.

  1009. This is what

  1010. happens when

  1011. you're filled

  1012. with great

  1013. joy at

  1014. being brought

  1015. to God's

  1016. king.

  1017. You gladly

  1018. give him the

  1019. best you

  1020. have.

  1021. You only

  1022. do that if

  1023. you've found a

  1024. greater treasure.

  1025. gold and

  1026. frankincense

  1027. and myrrh.

  1028. We get

  1029. gold being

  1030. a royal

  1031. gift,

  1032. frankincense

  1033. used for

  1034. incense.

  1035. Myrrh we

  1036. think of

  1037. being used

  1038. for burial

  1039. and maybe

  1040. that's what's

  1041. going on

  1042. here to

  1043. allude to

  1044. Jesus'

  1045. death,

  1046. but myrrh

  1047. was also a

  1048. spice used

  1049. for celebration

  1050. and joy.

  1051. So we find

  1052. it in the

  1053. book of

  1054. Song of

  1055. Songs,

  1056. for instance.

  1057. These are

  1058. all gifts

  1059. of celebration.

  1060. And I'm

  1061. wondering what

  1062. the purpose

  1063. of these

  1064. gifts are.

  1065. Like I

  1066. suppose they

  1067. could have

  1068. been trying

  1069. to get

  1070. political

  1071. favour from

  1072. the king

  1073. once he'd

  1074. grown up,

  1075. but rejoiced

  1076. exceedingly

  1077. with great

  1078. joy just

  1079. seems a bit

  1080. out of place

  1081. for a

  1082. diplomatic

  1083. visit.

  1084. I think

  1085. there's

  1086. something

  1087. deeper

  1088. going on.

  1089. I think

  1090. these

  1091. worshippers

  1092. gave her

  1093. the best

  1094. they had

  1095. as a

  1096. small

  1097. expression

  1098. of the

  1099. value

  1100. of the

  1101. king.

  1102. To be

  1103. associated

  1104. with the

  1105. king

  1106. was their

  1107. treasure.

  1108. And so

  1109. they gladly

  1110. open up

  1111. their other

  1112. treasures.

  1113. Any Jew

  1114. hearing this

  1115. would think

  1116. of what

  1117. happened

  1118. with Solomon,

  1119. the son of

  1120. King David,

  1121. when the

  1122. Queen of

  1123. Sheba from

  1124. the east

  1125. came.

  1126. We read

  1127. it in

  1128. 1 Kings 10.

  1129. when she

  1130. experienced

  1131. the supreme

  1132. wisdom of

  1133. the son

  1134. of David,

  1135. seeing the

  1136. temple,

  1137. seeing how

  1138. happy his

  1139. people were

  1140. under his

  1141. rule,

  1142. this foreigner

  1143. praises God

  1144. because the

  1145. Lord loved

  1146. Israel forever.

  1147. He has made

  1148. you king that

  1149. you may execute

  1150. justice and

  1151. righteousness.

  1152. And then she

  1153. gives a

  1154. bucket load of

  1155. gifts of

  1156. gold and

  1157. spices.

  1158. The gifts

  1159. were just a

  1160. small way of

  1161. expressing the

  1162. worth of this

  1163. king and the

  1164. privilege of

  1165. knowing him

  1166. and being

  1167. associated with

  1168. him.

  1169. And the

  1170. prophet saw a

  1171. day when all

  1172. the nations

  1173. would come and

  1174. give their

  1175. gifts to this

  1176. true son of

  1177. David.

  1178. So in

  1179. Isaiah 60

  1180. we hear

  1181. nations shall

  1182. come to

  1183. your light.

  1184. Your sons

  1185. shall come

  1186. from afar.

  1187. Your daughters

  1188. shall be

  1189. carried on

  1190. the hip.

  1191. Then you

  1192. shall see

  1193. and be

  1194. radiant.

  1195. Your heart

  1196. shall thrill

  1197. and exult.

  1198. They shall

  1199. bring gold

  1200. and frankincense

  1201. and shall

  1202. bring good

  1203. news.

  1204. The praises

  1205. of the

  1206. Lord.

  1207. Someone

  1208. greater than

  1209. Solomon is

  1210. here is

  1211. what Matthew

  1212. wants us

  1213. to see.

  1214. And while

  1215. God is

  1216. bringing

  1217. foreigners

  1218. to his

  1219. king into

  1220. exceeding

  1221. joy,

  1222. gladly

  1223. falling before

  1224. him,

  1225. Herod and

  1226. all Jerusalem

  1227. fear the

  1228. loss of

  1229. their control

  1230. and the

  1231. life they

  1232. have.

  1233. we see

  1234. how pathetic

  1235. Herod's

  1236. attempts are

  1237. to control

  1238. the situation

  1239. with everything

  1240. else going

  1241. on.

  1242. Can

  1243. Herod make

  1244. a star

  1245. in heaven

  1246. rise or

  1247. fall or

  1248. move?

  1249. Like his

  1250. political

  1251. scheming is

  1252. just pathetic

  1253. compared to

  1254. a star.

  1255. And then

  1256. we've got

  1257. this dream.

  1258. dream.

  1259. The king

  1260. of heaven

  1261. sends a

  1262. message to

  1263. these foreigners

  1264. in a dream

  1265. and they

  1266. obey the

  1267. real king,

  1268. not Herod.

  1269. Herod and

  1270. Jerusalem's

  1271. attempts to

  1272. stay in

  1273. control is

  1274. laughable in

  1275. light of who

  1276. has just

  1277. arrived on

  1278. earth.

  1279. I wonder

  1280. if our

  1281. attempts at

  1282. staying in

  1283. control are

  1284. any better.

  1285. Hasn't this

  1286. year shown us

  1287. how little we

  1288. are in

  1289. control?

  1290. What a

  1291. blessing to be

  1292. shown that.

  1293. A hard

  1294. lesson,

  1295. but a

  1296. blessing.

  1297. If you

  1298. have been

  1299. consumed with

  1300. worry this

  1301. year, then

  1302. come to

  1303. the one

  1304. who's really

  1305. in charge.

  1306. It's not

  1307. that God

  1308. hasn't clearly

  1309. shown the

  1310. world that

  1311. Jesus really

  1312. is in

  1313. charge.

  1314. They had

  1315. plenty of

  1316. testimony

  1317. then, and

  1318. we have

  1319. even more

  1320. today, this

  1321. morning.

  1322. Not only

  1323. because things

  1324. are clearer in

  1325. hindsight,

  1326. but Matthew

  1327. has helped

  1328. us see that

  1329. Jesus is

  1330. fulfilling all

  1331. God's promises

  1332. throughout

  1333. thousands of

  1334. years of

  1335. his speaking

  1336. into the

  1337. world.

  1338. He's made

  1339. it really

  1340. clear, Jesus

  1341. is the

  1342. son of

  1343. David.

  1344. Even this

  1345. early in the

  1346. story, we've

  1347. got so much

  1348. more to learn

  1349. about this

  1350. king and

  1351. what the

  1352. kingdom is

  1353. all about,

  1354. but even

  1355. this early in

  1356. the story,

  1357. we can be

  1358. sure he

  1359. is worthy

  1360. of our

  1361. worship.

  1362. So the

  1363. question is,

  1364. what will

  1365. we do

  1366. with this

  1367. king?

  1368. Will you

  1369. be afraid

  1370. to lose

  1371. control of

  1372. your life?

  1373. Or will

  1374. you joyfully

  1375. open your

  1376. treasures at

  1377. his feet?

  1378. These are

  1379. the only two

  1380. options.

  1381. Jesus

  1382. claims

  1383. jurisdiction

  1384. over all

  1385. nations,

  1386. every

  1387. person.

  1388. he says

  1389. in Matthew

  1390. 11,

  1391. all things

  1392. have been

  1393. handed over

  1394. to me

  1395. by my

  1396. father.

  1397. What a

  1398. claim.

  1399. And again,

  1400. after he

  1401. gets the

  1402. victory on

  1403. the cross,

  1404. rising to

  1405. resurrected

  1406. life, some

  1407. of his last

  1408. words in

  1409. Matthew are,

  1410. all authority

  1411. in heaven and

  1412. on earth has

  1413. been given

  1414. to me.

  1415. Abraham

  1416. Cooper

  1417. famously

  1418. said,

  1419. there is

  1420. not a

  1421. square

  1422. inch in

  1423. the whole

  1424. domain of

  1425. our human

  1426. existence

  1427. over which

  1428. Christ, who

  1429. is sovereign

  1430. over all,

  1431. does not

  1432. cry,

  1433. mine.

  1434. Mine.

  1435. What we do

  1436. with our

  1437. bodies,

  1438. our

  1439. church

  1440. services,

  1441. our drive

  1442. to work,

  1443. our country,

  1444. our homes,

  1445. our Netflix,

  1446. our Instagram

  1447. feed, our

  1448. sport, our

  1449. evenings, our

  1450. mornings, our

  1451. eating, our

  1452. drinking, our

  1453. work, our

  1454. relationships, our

  1455. parenting, our

  1456. health, our

  1457. leisure time, our

  1458. sleeping, our

  1459. bank accounts, our

  1460. words, our

  1461. desires, mine.

  1462. What will you

  1463. do with this

  1464. king?

  1465. Will you be

  1466. afraid to lose

  1467. control of your

  1468. life or will

  1469. you joyfully open

  1470. up all these

  1471. treasures at his

  1472. feet?

  1473. I think how we're

  1474. going to respond is

  1475. going to be

  1476. dependent on two

  1477. things.

  1478. Firstly, will

  1479. we realise that

  1480. we aren't very

  1481. good at ruling

  1482. our own life?

  1483. If we think

  1484. we're good at

  1485. it, then you're

  1486. going to have no

  1487. time for Jesus.

  1488. So GK

  1489. Chesterton famously

  1490. responded to a

  1491. news column that

  1492. asked, what is

  1493. wrong with the

  1494. world?

  1495. And he wrote

  1496. into the

  1497. newspaper with

  1498. the simple

  1499. words, I

  1500. am, and

  1501. signed off.

  1502. I am.

  1503. Why is this

  1504. relationship

  1505. struggling?

  1506. I am.

  1507. I am the

  1508. problem.

  1509. Matthew has

  1510. already told us

  1511. that this king's

  1512. name is Jesus

  1513. because he will

  1514. save his people

  1515. from their sins.

  1516. We're not good

  1517. at being in

  1518. charge.

  1519. I am not good

  1520. at being in

  1521. charge.

  1522. The other

  1523. thing we need

  1524. to know to

  1525. joyfully open

  1526. our treasures

  1527. at his feet

  1528. is, is he a

  1529. good king?

  1530. is he a good

  1531. king?

  1532. To really

  1533. answer that, we

  1534. don't have time

  1535. this morning.

  1536. We need to listen

  1537. to the rest of

  1538. Matthew and get

  1539. to know Jesus

  1540. better.

  1541. But for now, I

  1542. just want to

  1543. quickly go back to

  1544. Matthew 11.

  1545. After he said,

  1546. all things have

  1547. been handed over

  1548. to me by my

  1549. father, here's his

  1550. invitation to come

  1551. under his authority.

  1552. He says, come to

  1553. me.

  1554. Come to me, all

  1555. you who are weary

  1556. and burdened, and

  1557. I will give you

  1558. rest.

  1559. Take my yoke upon

  1560. you.

  1561. In other words,

  1562. come under my

  1563. rule and learn

  1564. from me.

  1565. Why?

  1566. Why?

  1567. For I am gentle

  1568. and humble in

  1569. heart, and you

  1570. will find rest for

  1571. your souls.

  1572. He uses his

  1573. authority to serve

  1574. us, which is

  1575. incredible.

  1576. The problem in

  1577. trusting Jesus

  1578. isn't that God

  1579. hasn't made it

  1580. clear.

  1581. Matthew has

  1582. shown us that

  1583. Jesus is the

  1584. answer to God's

  1585. promises, very

  1586. obviously.

  1587. The question

  1588. is, will we

  1589. try and control

  1590. our lives?

  1591. Will you be

  1592. afraid and try

  1593. and stay in

  1594. control?

  1595. Or will you

  1596. be drawn by

  1597. God to come

  1598. and see more

  1599. and more of

  1600. this Jesus, get

  1601. to know him

  1602. better, and

  1603. rejoice exceedingly

  1604. with great joy

  1605. as you find rest

  1606. for your souls?

  1607. That's our

  1608. choice.

  1609. Will you pray

  1610. with me as we

  1611. finish?

  1612. Let's pray.

  1613. Father, I pray

  1614. that you would

  1615. show Jesus to

  1616. each of us in

  1617. our hearts.

  1618. Please show

  1619. us just how

  1620. we aren't good

  1621. at controlling

  1622. our own lives.

  1623. Please convict

  1624. each one of us

  1625. of that afresh.

  1626. And please show

  1627. us that Jesus

  1628. really is in

  1629. charge.

  1630. And please

  1631. show us the

  1632. goodness of

  1633. Jesus.

  1634. We praise you

  1635. that even

  1636. though you

  1637. have all

  1638. authority, you

  1639. are gentle.

  1640. We praise you

  1641. that you

  1642. offer us

  1643. rest.

  1644. We don't

  1645. deserve it, but

  1646. that's what you

  1647. offer us.

  1648. We thank you

  1649. for that.

  1650. Father, I pray

  1651. that you would

  1652. reveal your son

  1653. to us more

  1654. and more as

  1655. we listen to

  1656. Matthew.

  1657. And I pray

  1658. that you would

  1659. give each one

  1660. of us rest,

  1661. that we would

  1662. joyfully open

  1663. up our life,

  1664. giving it to

  1665. you.

  1666. In Jesus'

  1667. name I pray.

  1668. Amen.
