  1. Hi everyone, I'm Amy and I'll be doing the Bible reading for today.

  2. The reading is from the book of Matthew, chapter 3, verses 1 to 12.

    Matthew 3:1–12

  3. In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the desert of Judea, and saying, Repent,

  4. for the kingdom of heaven is near. This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah.

  5. A voice of one calling in the desert, Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.

  6. John's clothes were made of camel's hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist.

  7. His food was locusts and wild honey. People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea

  8. and the whole region of the Jordan. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the

  9. Jordan River. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptized,

  10. he said to them, You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

  11. Produce fruit in keeping with repentance, and do not think you can say to yourselves,

  12. We have Abraham as our father. I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children

  13. for Abraham. The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce

  14. good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. I baptize you with water for repentance,

  15. but after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry.

  16. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand,

  17. and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff

  18. with unquenchable fire. Father, I pray simply that you would open our eyes to see Jesus,

  19. for each one of us. In Jesus' name, Amen.

  20. Amen. Well, tomorrow has been called Freedom Day. It's Freedom Day tomorrow, according to an ABC

  21. News article. Freedom from the captivity of the COVID restrictions. More people can gather together,

  22. we can sing at Christmas, a handful of people can dance again. I'll happily step aside and let you

  23. dance if you want to. And this will mean that there's more jobs again. That's probably,

  24. the best news, isn't it? The first line of the article says that pubs, theatres and places of

  25. worship all agree next week's Freedom Day in New South Wales will be the best Christmas present

  26. they could wish for. It's good news, isn't it? We're all looking forward to it. We should be thankful

  27. and not take it for granted. Now, I'm sure many people had it worse than me in Australia, but

  28. calling it Freedom Day just feels to me a bit over the top. It made me wonder, will lifting the

  29. restrictions make my life better? I think that really depends on how you measure a good life.

  30. So for instance, during the COVID restrictions this year, I think I was actually shown that there's a

  31. much greater captivity that I need freedom from than just the restrictions. Let me show you what I mean.

  32. Now, this probably depends on your personality, but a week into the lockdown back in April,

  33. with all these life commitments suddenly cancelled, as an introvert, I loved the extra time that I could

  34. just use for however I wanted to spend it. I don't know if you found that. It probably depends on

  35. personality. Or when the madness erupted with the panic buying. Even though I resolved to only buy

  36. what I needed for that week, like usual, I remember standing in the aisle of Coles holding a bag of rice

  37. rice that I didn't need and having this battle inside me, will it be here next week? And I took it for myself.

  38. When the lockdown lifted and these commitments started up again, it was difficult to leave the house,

  39. did you find? Like to set the alarm earlier, to actually drive to places, oh, what a burden.

  40. It gets in the way of your agenda again. Now, you might be thinking these are very minor things,

  41. but I believe they're examples of my heart being captive, that I'm devoted to a life living for myself.

  42. The outward situations change, but the problem inside my heart remains the same.

  43. The heart devoted to self can sometimes have very little impact on others, like you wouldn't even notice it.

  44. But other times, I think you would agree with me, a life devoted to self can really harm

  45. and let others down.

  46. I wonder, will we use our renewed freedoms tomorrow for ourselves?

  47. Or are we excited because we have more opportunities to serve others?

  48. Is your heart devoted to living for yourself?

  49. God's word to us today in Matthew is going to tell us about the greatest freedom day.

  50. The day when God came to set us free on the inside.

  51. So let's listen to what God says to us today.

  52. After Matthew has spent two chapters looking at the birth of Jesus

  53. and how he clearly meets the criteria for God's promised king,

  54. he skips over 25 years or so of Jesus' life.

  55. He's not a very good biographer, if that's what he's trying to do.

  56. Which it's not, he's got a point to make.

  57. Our attention is then drawn in chapter 3 to this camel hair wearing,

  58. locust eating, probably smelly man,

  59. living outside civilisation in the wilderness,

  60. a preacher who announces this day of freedom.

  61. What a weird thing to draw our attention to.

  62. The Bible rarely tells us what someone looks like.

  63. So it's interesting that we're told in 2 Kings 1.8 that Elijah the prophet,

  64. who lived a further 850 years before John,

  65. he wore a garment of hair with a leather belt around his waist.

  66. Now why is this significant?

  67. It's significant because God's final promise in the Old Testament,

  68. before Jesus turns up, is Malachi 4.5.

  69. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet,

  70. before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.

  71. As far as we know, there's absolutely nothing attractive about John

  72. that people back then or us today would be attracted to him,

  73. to come to him.

  74. We're told in verse 5 that many people did.

  75. Like a lot of people confused him for the king himself.

  76. That's how popular he was.

  77. Many people came and listened.

  78. Now why is he worth listening to?

  79. He's worth listening to because he is the last prophet to come

  80. before the great and awesome day,

  81. the day called the Day of the Lord,

  82. the day when God himself walks in the door,

  83. when he turns up.

  84. Isaiah the prophet said the same thing and Matthew quotes it.

  85. The voice of one crying in the wilderness,

  86. prepare the way of the Lord.

  87. Make his path straight.

  88. The Lord is coming.

  89. Now the original context of this quote in Isaiah

  90. is about God's people being set free from captivity,

  91. a new exodus,

  92. a new freedom.

  93. If John is this second Elijah preparing the way,

  94. then the Day of the Lord is here.

  95. It's arrived.

  96. It's happened.

  97. And the prophets were clear that the Day of the Lord

  98. was a day of salvation,

  99. bringing everlasting freedom

  100. for those who want God to be in control.

  101. But it's also the Day of God's anger

  102. for anyone who doesn't want God to be God.

  103. God is showing up.

  104. It's either going to be freedom or anger.

  105. Depending on whether we want God to be God.

  106. Another clue that Matthew gives us

  107. that this new day has arrived is the setting.

  108. It's in the wilderness.

  109. Now, the wilderness is where God loves

  110. to bring about new beginnings.

  111. So we see it when the Israelites come out of Egypt.

  112. After leaving captivity in Egypt,

  113. they're taken into the wilderness

  114. and it's in the wilderness

  115. that God comes to them at Mount Sinai

  116. and enters into a covenant relationship with them.

  117. It's in the wilderness.

  118. There's nothing there.

  119. That's where God meets people

  120. and starts the new covenant relationship.

  121. But for Israel back then,

  122. that freedom to live with God,

  123. that freedom to live for God,

  124. it was short-lived.

  125. It didn't last.

  126. Because the problem in their hearts,

  127. they just stuffed it up again and again and again.

  128. So God promised through the prophets

  129. a new day of freedom.

  130. A new exodus from captivity in the wilderness.

  131. I love the pictures in the next chapter of Isaiah,

    Isaiah 41 chapter mention

  132. chapter 41.

  133. chapter 41.

  134. When the poor and needy seek water,

  135. and there is none,

  136. and their tongue is parched with thirst,

  137. I, the Lord, will answer them.

  138. I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.

  139. I will make the wilderness a pool of water,

  140. and the dry land springs of water.

  141. I will put in the wilderness the cedar,

  142. the acacia, the myrtle, the olive,

  143. that they may see and know,

  144. may consider and understand together

  145. that the hand of the Lord has done this.

  146. The Holy One of Israel has created it.

  147. Now what's the point of that?

  148. The crowds who first heard John,

  149. they had to leave Jerusalem.

  150. They had to leave the city

  151. and go into the wilderness

  152. for this new beginning.

  153. They had to leave behind their status as Jews,

  154. as members of the people of God.

  155. They had to leave that behind,

  156. not trust in it.

  157. They had to leave behind

  158. the religious establishment

  159. that said,

  160. this is how you approach God.

  161. They had to leave that behind

  162. and go to the wilderness.

  163. So too, I think we need to leave behind

  164. whatever we look to in life.

  165. As the source of our confidence before God,

  166. we've got to leave that behind

  167. and come to God with nothing

  168. and let him create a garden in our hearts.

  169. We've got to come to him with nothing

  170. in the wilderness

  171. and he creates something new.

  172. So John's message in verse 2

  173. is really brief,

  174. but it's life-changing.

  175. It's history-changing.

  176. Here's his message.

  177. Here's what's going to bring about the change.

  178. Repent,

  179. for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  180. That's it.

  181. The kingdom of heaven isn't about a place.

  182. The kingdom of heaven is not the church,

  183. the institution.

  184. It is really about God's kingship,

  185. his sovereignty.

  186. I like how a guy named R.T. France

  187. puts John's message.

  188. He says it like this.

  189. God is now taking control.

  190. He's come.

  191. God is now taking control.

  192. The kingdom of heaven is the rule of God.

  193. Now, we might assume that the rule of God

  194. is kind of like the COVID restrictions.

  195. It's a damper.

  196. It's restraining life.

  197. But that's not true.

  198. God's good rule is like water

  199. pouring in the wilderness

  200. that causes thriving.

  201. It sets us free.

  202. Of course, in one sense,

  203. ever since God created the world,

  204. he's always been ruling.

  205. He's God.

  206. He's still ruling.

  207. But in another sense,

  208. people don't recognize his rule.

  209. People don't like his rule.

  210. People fight against him being God

  211. of their lives.

  212. And so there's this tension.

  213. John's message is,

  214. the kingdom of heaven is now.

  215. It starts in our hearts.

  216. It's when people acknowledge

  217. that God alone is God

  218. and want to live in his good ways.

  219. It's when people love God

  220. and worship him alone.

  221. People all over the world.

  222. That's the changes in here.

  223. The kingdom of heaven is arriving

  224. in people's hearts.

  225. That time has begun.

  226. It's arrived.

  227. It's not future.

  228. It's arrived.

  229. It's not future.

  230. Which is why it is time

  231. for every person to repent.

  232. Now, repentance isn't just

  233. feeling sorry for what you've done,

  234. although you've got to start there.

  235. Repentance is to abandon

  236. living for yourself

  237. and turn back to God.

  238. It's to give your entire allegiance

  239. to him,

  240. not to self.

  241. And John gives us two pictures

  242. of how urgent

  243. our situation is.

  244. He says in verse 10,

  245. even now the axe

  246. is laid at the root of the trees.

  247. Every tree, therefore,

  248. that does not bear good fruit

  249. is cut down

  250. and thrown into the fire.

  251. There are serious consequences

  252. to trying to dethrone God

  253. in our lives.

  254. That is a serious thing

  255. to try and do.

  256. The axe is placed

  257. at the root of the tree.

  258. It is ready to swing.

  259. Every tree,

  260. the whole tree,

  261. it's at the root.

  262. The whole tree will come down.

  263. There's no time to waste.

  264. The gardener wants

  265. to find good fruit.

  266. That's what a fruit tree

  267. is for.

  268. Otherwise,

  269. it's worthless,

  270. only good for burning.

  271. God is looking

  272. for the fruit

  273. of a life

  274. lived

  275. in love of God

  276. which overflows

  277. in the love of others.

  278. But notice

  279. that as every tree,

  280. the judgment

  281. is selective.

  282. God isn't just

  283. swinging wildly.

  284. He's careful.

  285. It's selective.

  286. Each person

  287. is judged

  288. according to their own fruit

  289. or lack thereof.

  290. So the question

  291. for us is

  292. will he find

  293. fruit on your tree?

  294. The other picture

  295. is a farming one

  296. in verse 12.

  297. After harvesting

  298. the wheat,

  299. there's a pile of wheat

  300. mixed up with

  301. all the other bits

  302. that got caught up

  303. in the threshing.

  304. Now the farmer

  305. uses a shovel,

  306. a winnowing fork,

  307. it's called here,

  308. to throw it up

  309. in the air

  310. and the light bit,

  311. the useless bits

  312. are lighter

  313. and the wind

  314. blows it away

  315. and the wheat

  316. falls back down.

  317. The wheat

  318. is bundled up

  319. and safely

  320. brought into the barn.

  321. The chaff,

  322. the useless bits,

  323. is bundled up

  324. and put

  325. into the fire.

  326. Notice again

  327. the judgment

  328. is selective.

  329. The wheat

  330. isn't burned

  331. with the chaff

  332. nor is the chaff

  333. accidentally bundled up

  334. with the wheat.

  335. John says

  336. the situation

  337. is urgent.

  338. The winnowing fork

  339. is in his hand.

  340. He's ready

  341. to separate.

  342. Bringing his people

  343. into his barn safely

  344. and the rest

  345. burnt with

  346. unquenchable

  347. fire.

  348. Fire that can't

  349. be extinguished.

  350. Now to be honest

  351. with you,

  352. I had to spend

  353. a lot of time

  354. this week

  355. just researching

  356. this word

  357. unquenchable

  358. and things like

  359. every fiver

  360. of my being

  361. wants this

  362. not to mean

  363. what it means.

  364. Maybe I'm okay

  365. in the extreme cases

  366. like Hitler

  367. and the like

  368. of them

  369. having eternal

  370. unquenchable

  371. fire.

  372. Maybe I'm okay

  373. with that

  374. but for

  375. ordinary people

  376. this idea

  377. is just

  378. terrifying.

  379. Many Christians

  380. try and downplay

  381. what the Bible

  382. says,

  383. what Jesus

  384. himself says

  385. later on.

  386. So one idea

  387. that people

  388. have come up

  389. with is

  390. purgatory

  391. where people

  392. just pay

  393. for their

  394. sins

  395. and then

  396. they go

  397. to heaven.

  398. Another idea

  399. is that

  400. only Christians

  401. have eternal

  402. life.

  403. Everyone else

  404. just ceases

  405. to exist.

  406. Unfortunately

  407. this picture

  408. here of a fire

  409. that can't be

  410. extinguished

  411. is a picture

  412. of eternal

  413. conscious experience

  414. and Jesus

  415. talks about

  416. this later.

  417. It's a

  418. terrifying

  419. thought.

  420. But even

  421. if we

  422. struggle with

  423. I think we

  424. should all

  425. struggle with

  426. this idea.

  427. I think anyone

  428. should be

  429. rejoicing about

  430. this concept.

  431. But we've

  432. got a

  433. choice.

  434. We can

  435. sit as

  436. judge over

  437. what God

  438. says in

  439. the Bible

  440. and decide

  441. it's too

  442. harsh or

  443. we can

  444. listen to

  445. what the

  446. righteous

  447. judge

  448. says.

  449. While we

  450. do,

  451. we need to

  452. always remember

  453. what God

  454. says in

  455. Ezekiel 33

  456. 11.

  457. Please hear

  458. this clearly.

  459. as I

  460. live,

  461. declares

  462. the Lord

  463. God,

  464. I have

  465. no pleasure

  466. in the

  467. death of

  468. the wicked.

  469. I have

  470. no pleasure.

  471. But that

  472. the wicked

  473. would turn

  474. from his

  475. way and

  476. live.

  477. Turn

  478. back,

  479. turn back

  480. from your

  481. evil ways.

  482. For why

  483. will you

  484. die?

  485. That is the

  486. heart of

  487. God.

  488. He takes

  489. no pleasure

  490. in the

  491. death of

  492. anyone.

  493. God's

  494. just

  495. judgment,

  496. the words

  497. of Malachi

  498. say it

  499. best.

  500. Who can

  501. endure

  502. the day

  503. of his

  504. coming?

  505. Who can

  506. stand when

  507. he appears?

  508. Is there

  509. any good

  510. tree?

  511. Is there

  512. any good

  513. wheat?

  514. Well,

  515. before you

  516. despair,

  517. before we

  518. despair,

  519. you need

  520. to see

  521. the surprising

  522. answer to

  523. who the

  524. king counts

  525. as good

  526. and whom

  527. he will

  528. cut down.

  529. We see

  530. two groups

  531. of people

  532. coming out

  533. to John

  534. and they

  535. represent the

  536. two responses

  537. we can have

  538. to King

  539. Jesus.

  540. people.

  541. If you

  542. were to ask

  543. a Jewish

  544. person living

  545. in Jerusalem

  546. at the

  547. time,

  548. show me

  549. what a

  550. godly

  551. person

  552. looks like,

  553. they would

  554. take you

  555. to one

  556. of two

  557. groups of

  558. people.

  559. The

  560. Sadducees

  561. or the

  562. Pharisees.

  563. They're the

  564. religious elite.

  565. They're at the

  566. top.

  567. The Sadducees

  568. were politically

  569. in charge.

  570. They were the

  571. priests in the

  572. temple.

  573. And the Sadducees,

  574. they were just

  575. so careful

  576. to keep

  577. God's rules

  578. that they

  579. added rules

  580. just to be

  581. even more

  582. careful.

  583. Everyone

  584. thought these

  585. guys were

  586. close to

  587. God.

  588. They're at

  589. the top.

  590. If anyone's

  591. getting in,

  592. they're getting

  593. in.

  594. But verse

  595. 7,

  596. when these

  597. religious elites

  598. come out to

  599. see why all

  600. the crowds

  601. are coming to

  602. John,

  603. he does not

  604. welcome them.

  605. You brood of

  606. vipers,

  607. who warned

  608. you to

  609. flee from

  610. the wrath

  611. to come.

  612. Bear fruit

  613. in keeping

  614. with repentance.

  615. They too

  616. needed to

  617. turn their

  618. hearts back

  619. to God,

  620. but they

  621. thought they

  622. were already

  623. pretty good

  624. by their

  625. own efforts.

  626. They were

  627. Abraham's

  628. descendants.

  629. They thought

  630. they were

  631. already members

  632. of God's

  633. people.

  634. They were

  635. confident they

  636. were already

  637. good at

  638. running their

  639. own life.

  640. Yet from

  641. God's

  642. perspective,

  643. where their

  644. confidence in

  645. themselves,

  646. their lack

  647. of awareness

  648. of their

  649. sin,

  650. they're in

  651. danger of

  652. hell.

  653. It was the

  654. religious elite

  655. who were most

  656. in danger.

  657. And then

  658. surprisingly,

  659. again,

  660. it's the

  661. ordinary people,

  662. the people you

  663. could look at

  664. and they

  665. obviously haven't

  666. lived for God.

  667. God.

  668. It's those

  669. people who

  670. came out to

  671. John who

  672. admitted that

  673. they need

  674. forgiveness.

  675. They admitted

  676. that they need

  677. freedom from

  678. their sin,

  679. that they need

  680. a new

  681. beginning.

  682. It isn't the

  683. self-confident

  684. person that the

  685. king welcomes,

  686. it's the person

  687. who confesses

  688. their need for

  689. the king to

  690. forgive them

  691. and change

  692. them.

  693. We see in

  694. verse 6,

  695. to symbolise

  696. their turning

  697. back to God,

  698. they're baptised

  699. by John,

  700. confessing

  701. their sins.

  702. So baptism,

  703. it was common

  704. back then for

  705. converts to

  706. Judaism to

  707. immerse

  708. themselves in

  709. water to

  710. show a change

  711. in their life,

  712. to stop

  713. worshipping

  714. other gods

  715. and to

  716. worship the

  717. God of the

  718. Jews.

  719. Or it was

  720. common for

  721. Jews on their

  722. way to the

  723. temple to

  724. wash themselves.

  725. What's different

  726. about John's

  727. baptism was

  728. to accept

  729. his message

  730. that the

  731. new day of

  732. God's rule

  733. under God's

  734. appointed king

  735. has begun

  736. because the

  737. king has

  738. shown up.

  739. It was to

  740. believe his

  741. message.

  742. It was to

  743. accept freedom

  744. on God's

  745. terms.

  746. Even the

  747. act of having

  748. John immerse

  749. them, so

  750. they didn't

  751. immerse

  752. themselves,

  753. the act of

  754. John baptizing.

  755. Even that

  756. symbolizes that

  757. you don't

  758. change yourself.

  759. You must

  760. receive it.

  761. It must be

  762. done for

  763. you.

  764. But John

  765. is really

  766. clear.

  767. His water

  768. baptism was

  769. just to

  770. prepare people

  771. for the

  772. real inside

  773. change that

  774. only the

  775. king can

  776. give you.

  777. John

  778. can't give

  779. it.

  780. I can't

  781. give it to

  782. you.

  783. You must go

  784. to the

  785. king himself

  786. to get

  787. that internal

  788. cleansing.

  789. A radical

  790. change has

  791. to happen,

  792. like turning

  793. stones into

  794. children.

  795. Only God

  796. can do

  797. that.

  798. With

  799. enough

  800. willpower

  801. and motivations,

  802. I can

  803. modify some

  804. of my

  805. behaviors.

  806. Like, I've

  807. cut down

  808. from three

  809. coffees to

  810. two each

  811. day.

  812. That's a

  813. big win

  814. for me.

  815. But how

  816. will my

  817. heart,

  818. that is so

  819. devoted to

  820. a life living

  821. for myself,

  822. be set

  823. free to

  824. love God

  825. and others?

  826. How will

  827. that happen?

  828. The prophet

  829. Ezekiel in

  830. chapter 36

  831. said that

  832. God will

  833. one day

  834. bring about

  835. this radical

  836. change.

  837. Let me

  838. read his

  839. words.

  840. God

  841. said,

  842. I will

  843. sprinkle

  844. clean

  845. water on

  846. you,

  847. and you

  848. shall be

  849. clean from

  850. all your

  851. uncleannesses,

  852. and from

  853. all your

  854. idols I

  855. will cleanse

  856. you,

  857. and I

  858. will give

  859. you a

  860. new heart

  861. and a

  862. new spirit

  863. I will

  864. put within

  865. you,

  866. and I

  867. will remove

  868. the heart

  869. of stone

  870. from your

  871. flesh and

  872. give you

  873. a heart

  874. of flesh,

  875. and I

  876. will put

  877. my spirit

  878. within you

  879. and cause

  880. you to

  881. walk in

  882. my statutes

  883. and be

  884. careful to

  885. obey my

  886. rules,

  887. and you

  888. shall be

  889. my people

  890. and I

  891. will be

  892. your God.

  893. John

  894. says the

  895. day of

  896. inner renewal

  897. has arrived

  898. with King

  899. Jesus.

  900. verse 11,

  901. he points

  902. forward to

  903. this baptism

  904. inside.

  905. He who

  906. is coming

  907. after me

  908. is mightier

  909. than I,

  910. whose sandals

  911. I'm not

  912. worthy to

  913. carry.

  914. He will

  915. baptize you

  916. with the

  917. Holy Spirit

  918. and fire.

  919. And then

  920. Jesus walks

  921. onto the

  922. scene,

  923. the next

  924. verse,

  925. and he's

  926. baptized by

  927. John.

  928. That's a bit

  929. surprising and

  930. we're going

  931. to look at

  932. that next

  933. week.

  934. Why does

  935. he choose

  936. to be

  937. baptized?

  938. The

  939. mighty

  940. one has

  941. arrived.

  942. The

  943. day of

  944. the Lord

  945. is here.

  946. The

  947. King has

  948. come.

  949. God is

  950. now taking

  951. control.

  952. How does

  953. he take

  954. control of

  955. our hearts?

  956. It's not

  957. by force.

  958. God is

  959. going to

  960. do it.

  961. I like

  962. the quote

  963. by Augustine

  964. which captures

  965. the lengths

  966. Jesus has

  967. gone to,

  968. not to

  969. condemn us,

  970. which he

  971. has every

  972. right to

  973. do,

  974. but to

  975. set us

  976. free.

  977. So it's

  978. in the

  979. bulletin,

  980. but let me

  981. read it.

  982. Talking

  983. about Jesus,

  984. he lies in

  985. a manger,

  986. but he

  987. holds the

  988. world in

  989. his hand.

  990. God

  991. is

  992. nourished

  993. at the

  994. breast,

  995. but he

  996. feeds

  997. angels.

  998. He is

  999. wrapped in

  1000. swaddling

  1001. cloths,

  1002. but he

  1003. clothes us

  1004. with

  1005. immortality.

  1006. He is

  1007. suckled,

  1008. but he's

  1009. adored.

  1010. He does

  1011. not find

  1012. room in

  1013. the inn,

  1014. but he

  1015. makes a

  1016. temple for

  1017. himself in

  1018. the hearts

  1019. of believers.

  1020. God

  1021. became a

  1022. human

  1023. being

  1024. to set

  1025. us free

  1026. from living

  1027. for ourselves.

  1028. I think

  1029. it is

  1030. right for

  1031. us to

  1032. fear

  1033. eternal

  1034. fire that

  1035. our sins

  1036. deserve.

  1037. It is

  1038. right for

  1039. us to

  1040. fear that.

  1041. But Jesus

  1042. does not

  1043. want you

  1044. to come

  1045. simply with

  1046. fear.

  1047. We're just

  1048. saying it

  1049. in Amazing

  1050. Grace,

  1051. the lyrics.

  1052. It was

  1053. grace that

  1054. taught my

  1055. heart to

  1056. fear,

  1057. and grace

  1058. my fears

  1059. relieved.

  1060. You've

  1061. got to

  1062. start with

  1063. fear,

  1064. but he

  1065. doesn't

  1066. want you

  1067. to just

  1068. come with

  1069. fear.

  1070. It was

  1071. grace that

  1072. my fears

  1073. relieved.

  1074. How does

  1075. he do

  1076. that?

  1077. The

  1078. king sets

  1079. us free

  1080. from our

  1081. sin by

  1082. taking hell

  1083. upon himself

  1084. by going

  1085. to the

  1086. cross.

  1087. God

  1088. said,

  1089. instead of

  1090. me,

  1091. the fruitless

  1092. tree,

  1093. the gardener

  1094. was cut

  1095. down.

  1096. Instead

  1097. of me,

  1098. the chaff

  1099. that should

  1100. have been

  1101. blown away,

  1102. the farmer

  1103. himself was

  1104. thrown into

  1105. the fire.

  1106. God

  1107. will

  1108. love you.

  1109. God

  1110. will

  1111. love you.

  1112. God

  1113. will

  1114. love you.

  1115. He invites

  1116. us to

  1117. come to

  1118. him to

  1119. be set

  1120. free,

  1121. to give

  1122. our total

  1123. allegiance to

  1124. him and

  1125. receive the

  1126. Holy Spirit

  1127. that will

  1128. change us

  1129. from the

  1130. inside out,

  1131. to love

  1132. God and

  1133. love others

  1134. as we're

  1135. made for.

  1136. But he

  1137. does it by

  1138. his own

  1139. death.

  1140. death.

  1141. His own

  1142. death makes

  1143. a temple for

  1144. himself in

  1145. the hearts

  1146. of believers.

  1147. So are

  1148. you ready

  1149. to meet

  1150. the king?

  1151. are you

  1152. ready to

  1153. accept

  1154. freedom on

  1155. God's

  1156. terms?

  1157. Not

  1158. freedom to

  1159. sin,

  1160. to keep

  1161. living for

  1162. yourself,

  1163. but freedom

  1164. to love

  1165. and flourish

  1166. under the

  1167. king.

  1168. God has

  1169. turned up.

  1170. He's

  1171. walked in

  1172. the door.

  1173. The time

  1174. of God's

  1175. rule has

  1176. begun.

  1177. The king

  1178. is enthroned.

  1179. His name

  1180. is Jesus.

  1181. Tomorrow

  1182. might be

  1183. freedom day

  1184. from all

  1185. the

  1186. restrictions,

  1187. but today

  1188. he offers

  1189. you freedom

  1190. from your

  1191. sin.

  1192. He offers

  1193. you freedom

  1194. from the

  1195. consequences

  1196. of your

  1197. sin.

  1198. He offers

  1199. you a

  1200. new

  1201. beginning,

  1202. a new

  1203. life,

  1204. knowing God

  1205. as your

  1206. father,

  1207. loving him,

  1208. and then

  1209. that overflowing

  1210. in loving

  1211. others.

  1212. we've

  1213. all got

  1214. to face

  1215. this

  1216. king one

  1217. day,

  1218. an answer

  1219. for our

  1220. lives.

  1221. Why not

  1222. come to

  1223. him today,

  1224. confessing

  1225. your sin,

  1226. asking him

  1227. to change

  1228. you?

  1229. Will you

  1230. pray with me?

  1231. Father,

  1232. let's pray.

  1233. Let's pray.

  1234. Father,

  1235. we thank you

  1236. for sending

  1237. your son,

  1238. not to

  1239. condemn the

  1240. world,

  1241. but to

  1242. save us.

  1243. We thank you

  1244. that you

  1245. came,

  1246. Lord,

  1247. not to be

  1248. served,

  1249. but to

  1250. serve us

  1251. by going

  1252. to the

  1253. cross in

  1254. our

  1255. place.

  1256. Father,

  1257. help each

  1258. of us

  1259. to hear

  1260. your words

  1261. in Matthew.

  1262. Lord,

  1263. help each

  1264. of us

  1265. not to

  1266. trust in

  1267. ourselves

  1268. and be

  1269. confident in

  1270. ourselves

  1271. to stand

  1272. before you,

  1273. but help us

  1274. come to you.

  1275. May our

  1276. hearts be a

  1277. wilderness as

  1278. we come to

  1279. you,

  1280. and may you

  1281. create new

  1282. life in each

  1283. one of us,

  1284. the life

  1285. you made

  1286. us for,

  1287. the life

  1288. in your

  1289. presence,

  1290. knowing your

  1291. love that

  1292. even went to

  1293. the cross

  1294. for our

  1295. sake.

  1296. Lord,

  1297. create a

  1298. garden in

  1299. each one

  1300. of us,

  1301. set us

  1302. free from

  1303. a life

  1304. lived for

  1305. self,

  1306. that we

  1307. might love

  1308. you as

  1309. you deserve

  1310. and love

  1311. others as

  1312. we ought

  1313. to.

  1314. Lord,

  1315. only your

  1316. spirit can

  1317. bring about

  1318. this.

  1319. My words

  1320. can't,

  1321. only your

  1322. spirit can.

  1323. Please,

  1324. save each

  1325. one of us,

  1326. in Jesus'

  1327. name.

  1328. Amen.
