  1. Proverbs chapter 9.

    Proverbs 9 chapter mention

  2. Proverbs chapter 9.

    Proverbs 9 chapter mention

  3. Leave your simple ways and live and walk in the way of insight.

  4. Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse,

  5. and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury.

  6. Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you.

  7. Reprove a wise man, and he will love you.

  8. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser.

  9. Teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

  10. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,

  11. and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

  12. For by me your days will be multiplied,

  13. and years will be added to your life.

  14. If you are wise, you are wise for yourself.

  15. If you scoff, you alone will bear it.

  16. The woman of folly is loud.

  17. She is seductive and knows nothing.

  18. She sits at the door of her house.

  19. She takes a seat on the highest places of the town,

  20. calling to those who pass by,

  21. who are going straight on their way.

  22. Whoever is simple, let him turn in here.

  23. And to him who lacks sense, she says,

  24. stolen water is sweet,

  25. and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.

  26. But he does not know that the dead are there,

  27. that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

  28. Well, in Proverbs chapter 9.

    Proverbs 9 chapter mention

  29. So I think we don't have to argue the case

  30. that everybody would recognize

  31. there are competing worldviews,

  32. competing ideas of what defines the good life,

  33. and competing ideas of what it is to live the good life.

  34. In terms of Proverbs,

  35. they're competing ideas of wisdom and foolishness.

  36. Now, they cannot all be right

  37. because they say such different things.

  38. You might say, well, none of them could be right,

  39. and that's true, that's a possibility.

  40. Some could be right and others wrong,

  41. and that's a possibility,

  42. but they can't all be right.

  43. And the big question about that then is,

  44. how do I know that my worldview

  45. or my view of life and the good life is correct?

  46. How do I know the worldview

  47. that's shaping my life is wise?

  48. And how do I know that it's actually delivering

  49. the good life I crave?

  50. Is it possible to think that my worldview

  51. is delivering the good life

  52. and actually be deceived?

  53. Well, Scripture tells us, yes.

  54. It's possible to think you're in wisdom,

  55. and yet you're in foolishness.

  56. Australians, and I may not sound like one,

  57. but I count myself as one,

  58. I haven't lived much more of my life here

  59. than in Ireland.

  60. But Australians think of themselves

  61. as very open-minded.

  62. So if you're talking to Australians,

  63. they'll say, look,

  64. I'm easily persuaded by evidence and truth.

  65. And if you talk about history,

  66. they'll say, yes,

  67. and I'm persuaded by evidence and truth

  68. in contrast to past generations

  69. where it was so obvious

  70. they were so full of prejudice,

  71. racial prejudice, religious prejudice,

  72. social prejudice, and so on and so forth.

  73. But in reality,

  74. every person has prejudice.

  75. That is, prejudice is buried background beliefs

  76. about wisdom and the good life.

  77. And these things are often things

  78. we're blind to.

  79. Sometimes we'll hear it expressed as,

  80. well, that's just the way things are in life.

  81. Probably that's a background belief,

  82. a buried background belief

  83. that just accepts without questioning.

  84. And what that means is, I think,

  85. oftentimes people just copy

  86. the lifestyle that's familiar,

  87. copy the lifestyle that's been handed down to them.

  88. Copy the lifestyle that we see

  89. others around them living.

  90. And from that, they say,

  91. well, if that's what the majority are doing,

  92. then that must be the good life.

  93. That must be wisdom.

  94. And then from there,

  95. most people would agree

  96. that the closed,

  97. the person who is closed-minded,

  98. who backs their own form of wisdom

  99. without ever examining it,

  100. is actually foolish.

  101. Or stupid.

  102. And what we've done, you see,

  103. as Australians,

  104. is we've got ourselves into a real dilemma.

  105. Because our society is committed

  106. to the absolute freedom of the individual.

  107. That means an individual is free

  108. to believe what they want,

  109. how they want,

  110. and should be free

  111. from even being examined

  112. or corrected on that view.

  113. But this is an expression of closed-mindedness.

  114. And it's in conflict with discovering

  115. the life of wisdom we crave.

  116. Because if we're going to have a worldview,

  117. it means,

  118. and we've got to be able to examine it.

  119. And in fact,

  120. I would argue we need an external authority.

  121. Because we can't actually trust

  122. our own examination ultimately.

  123. We need an external authority

  124. which is both true

  125. and actually works

  126. when it comes to delivering the good life.

  127. Now,

  128. that takes us into Proverbs

  129. because Proverbs presents

  130. God's pathway of wisdom.

  131. And it presents it as the only one

  132. that delivers the good life we crave.

  133. In fact,

  134. the Bible at other points

  135. and quite repeatedly

  136. through the scriptures,

  137. the Bible says

  138. what Peter says

  139. in chapter 1,

  140. verse 18.

  141. He says that everything else

  142. is an empty way of life

  143. handed down to you

  144. from your forefathers.

  145. It's that idea of just

  146. taking what you've received,

  147. what's popular,

  148. what's familiar,

  149. and trying to make the best of it.

  150. Even though most of us would say,

  151. hey,

  152. it doesn't actually work.

  153. Wisdom is about choices,

  154. choices,

  155. choices.

  156. That's the reality

  157. that these,

  158. that first section of Proverbs,

    Proverbs 1 chapter mention

  159. chapters 1 to 9

  160. has been building towards.

  161. Wisdom and foolishness

  162. are competing alternatives.

  163. And making right choices

  164. requires discernment.

  165. And heaps of it.

  166. Wisdom is wholesome.

  167. It's desirable.

  168. It's valuable.

  169. It's satisfying.

  170. And generally,

  171. wisdom is a course of action

  172. which is reasonably obvious.

  173. But we see it all around us

  174. all the time

  175. that wisdom doesn't happen automatically.

  176. It's not something

  177. we're naturally inclined to.

  178. It's always as a choice,

  179. and I think a tough choice,

  180. to follow wisdom

  181. and turn away

  182. from foolishness.

  183. Chapter 7, 8, and 9

  184. emphasize this

  185. with challenging pictures

  186. or metaphors.

  187. Chapter 7

  188. was a sexual metaphor.

  189. and the thing

  190. that plays out there

  191. is the choice

  192. between true intimacy

  193. and false intimacy

  194. in the context

  195. of a picture of seduction.

  196. Chapter 8

  197. was a treasure hunting metaphor

  198. that Dave took us through

  199. last week.

  200. The choice is between

  201. real treasure

  202. and counterfeit treasure

  203. that looks shiny,

  204. that dazzles

  205. and turns your head

  206. but just doesn't deliver.

  207. The choice is always

  208. between finding life

  209. in relationship with God,

  210. expressing God's character

  211. and every action of life

  212. and chasing

  213. an alternative life,

  214. a life of autonomy,

  215. a life of rejection

  216. of God's pathway.

  217. And as Dave said last week,

  218. foolishness always presents

  219. as an equal alternative.

  220. That's the sneakiness,

  221. the deceitfulness of it.

  222. It always presents

  223. as an equal alternative

  224. to God's wisdom

  225. but it actually seduces

  226. and dazzles

  227. and appears popular

  228. while actually destroying people.

  229. So once again I say

  230. to make right choices,

  231. every person needs

  232. discernment

  233. in spade loads.

  234. And chapter 9

  235. I'm suggesting this morning

  236. is a case study

  237. in wisdom and discernment.

  238. So critical,

  239. as I'm saying,

  240. is in this process

  241. of finding

  242. and nurturing wisdom

  243. is discernment.

  244. Now,

  245. what is discernment?

  246. Discernment's

  247. the ability

  248. to sort through

  249. apparently equal options

  250. and dig into it

  251. in a way

  252. that you can

  253. identify

  254. and avoid lies

  255. or false reality

  256. and embrace truth

  257. or true reality.

  258. Bit of a tautology there

  259. but for emphasis.

  260. Now,

  261. I would actually venture to say

  262. and it's a bit sad to say

  263. that I think discernment

  264. appears practically

  265. to be in really short supply

  266. in our world.

  267. And I think it's actually

  268. even the case

  269. among Christians

  270. that discernment

  271. is in short supply.

  272. One of the past greats,

  273. the theological greats

  274. said that

  275. they figured that discernment

  276. was probably the last characteristic

  277. that Christians would develop.

  278. Well,

  279. come with me then

  280. into chapter 9.

  281. And what we have here

  282. is another metaphor.

  283. It's a metaphor,

  284. a party metaphor

  285. where the choice here

  286. in chapter 9

  287. is between

  288. a life-giving

  289. and a life-destroying

  290. party.

  291. Now,

  292. it could be a feast,

  293. it could be a party,

  294. it could be an event.

  295. I'm just using those terms

  296. interchangeably.

  297. But party's probably

  298. something we resonate

  299. with more.

  300. So,

  301. there's two competing

  302. identical party invitations.

  303. One from this woman

  304. called Dem Folly,

  305. we'll call her Dem Folly.

  306. If you look at verse 16,

  307. look at the words.

  308. Whoever is simple,

  309. let him turn in here.

  310. There's the invitation.

  311. And verse 4,

  312. identical invitation.

  313. Whoever is simple,

  314. let him turn in here.

  315. Now,

  316. these two invitations

  317. turn up in your mailbox.

  318. And at that point,

  319. they look identical.

  320. Which party will you go to?

  321. Each is issued

  322. to the simple.

  323. Now,

  324. hear this next sentence

  325. very, very carefully.

  326. The simple

  327. is a description

  328. not of mental capacity,

  329. but of mental attitude

  330. to life.

  331. It's about an approach

  332. to life

  333. of the average person.

  334. The simple person

  335. is the average person.

  336. That's the point

  337. in this metaphor.

  338. It's the average person

  339. who,

  340. in a sense,

  341. is a bit aimless

  342. and drifting in life,

  343. yet always looking

  344. for the next exciting thing.

  345. unthinking,

  346. at points,

  347. easily believing

  348. what others say

  349. and do,

  350. yet quite defensive

  351. and headstrong

  352. when challenged.

  353. It's a strange mix,

  354. but I think that

  355. does describe

  356. the average person

  357. we rub shoulders with.

  358. The invitations

  359. are identical,

  360. but the shape

  361. of the two parties

  362. is radically different.

  363. They're different

  364. in basic appeal.

  365. If you look at

  366. verses 13 and 14,

  367. I'm dealing with

  368. Dame Folly first

  369. and then come back

  370. to Lady Wisdom.

  371. So Dame Folly,

  372. her appeal

  373. is loud

  374. and seductive

  375. and shameless.

  376. That's the word

  377. in English there,

  378. knows nothing,

  379. is probably better

  380. translated shameless.

  381. She's right out there.

  382. She's in your face.

  383. She sits at the door

  384. of her house.

  385. She takes a seat

  386. in the highest places

  387. of the town,

  388. calling to those

  389. who pass by her,

  390. going straight on their way.

  391. She's loud.

  392. It sounds a bit familiar.

  393. Loud, proud,

  394. and shameless.

  395. And she knows

  396. jolly well

  397. that the majority

  398. of people

  399. will just be passing

  400. right past her front door.

  401. She doesn't have

  402. to work too hard.

  403. She just needs

  404. to get their attention

  405. as they go past

  406. and suck them in.

  407. And she assumes

  408. a crowd at her party.

  409. Verse 3,

  410. In contrast,

  411. Lady Wisdom

  412. knows the average person

  413. will not be naturally

  414. inclined to accept

  415. her invitation.

  416. So she's busy

  417. pursuing individuals,

  418. pleading with them

  419. to come to her event.

  420. The two parties

  421. are radically different

  422. in AIM.

  423. Dame Folly,

  424. as we just read

  425. those verses,

  426. her biggest intent

  427. is just to fill her house.

  428. Get them all in.

  429. She cares nothing

  430. for the people

  431. she seduces

  432. into her party.

  433. So she makes it easy

  434. for people

  435. to be there.

  436. And notice,

  437. there's no obvious

  438. cost of entry.

  439. She invites them

  440. into that place

  441. if you look at

  442. verse 15 and 17.

  443. She invites them

  444. into an environment

  445. that's familiar,

  446. that's comfortable.

  447. Where you can hang out

  448. with all the people

  449. you've always wanted

  450. to be around.

  451. The cool people,

  452. the celebrities,

  453. the high profile sports people,

  454. the sexy people,

  455. and so on and so forth.

  456. Verse 17,

  457. water is often

  458. a picture

  459. for sexual expression

  460. in the Proverbs

  461. and the Old Testament.

  462. So it's almost

  463. as if this Dame Folly

  464. is saying,

  465. hey listen guys,

  466. I just want to fill my house.

  467. Tell you what,

  468. leave your brains

  469. at the door.

  470. Leave your morals

  471. at the door.

  472. Come inside

  473. and I promise you

  474. you can indulge

  475. in all the fantasies

  476. of your heart,

  477. all the desires,

  478. the secret desires

  479. of your heart

  480. you long wanted

  481. to express.

  482. Because in my place

  483. if it feels good

  484. and everybody else

  485. is doing it

  486. then you can be sure

  487. it's right.

  488. You can be sure

  489. I've got the good life.

  490. But we're told here

  491. that in truth

  492. her party is toxic.

  493. And it's a picture

  494. of Todd Sweeney's place

  495. where the bodies

  496. are being piled up

  497. in the cellar

  498. while more people

  499. are pouring

  500. through the front door.

  501. And what do we discover?

  502. We discover

  503. there is a huge cost

  504. of entry to pay.

  505. But in her party

  506. it's landed on you

  507. at the last minute.

  508. What's the huge cost

  509. of entry?

  510. Death.

  511. Destruction.

  512. And by the time

  513. you realize

  514. there's a huge cost

  515. of entry

  516. it's too late.

  517. It's pay up time.

  518. The good life

  519. they thought

  520. they had found

  521. was actually

  522. a lifeless life.

  523. Now in sharp contrast

  524. Lady Wisdom

  525. is deeply concerned

  526. for those

  527. she invites.

  528. Her party

  529. again remember

  530. and this is all

  531. metaphor

  532. that's all

  533. picture language

  534. verses 1 and 2

  535. her party

  536. comes from

  537. a really solid house.

  538. We might use

  539. exchange that

  540. for the word worldview.

  541. She comes from

  542. a really solid

  543. well thought out

  544. well constructed place.

  545. She's prepared

  546. meticulously

  547. and she's offering

  548. a lavish feast

  549. of meats

  550. and wine.

  551. The sort of stuff

  552. that would really

  553. satisfy the body

  554. and satisfy the soul

  555. in the metaphor.

  556. But her party

  557. has a very obvious

  558. upfront cost

  559. to be paid

  560. which she makes

  561. no bones about.

  562. Look at verse 6.

  563. She says

  564. yeah come to my party

  565. by all means

  566. I really would love

  567. to have you here

  568. but verse 6

  569. leave your simple ways

  570. and live

  571. and walk

  572. in the way of insight.

  573. She's saying

  574. look if you want

  575. to come to my party

  576. that would be terrific.

  577. I want you there

  578. but the cost of entry

  579. is that you must

  580. be prepared

  581. to examine your life.

  582. You must be prepared

  583. to leave behind

  584. wrong thinking

  585. of the past.

  586. You must be prepared

  587. to be pushed

  588. into unfamiliar

  589. uncomfortable places.

  590. My party

  591. won't be

  592. a cocahoot affair.

  593. My party

  594. will be serious.

  595. It will be challenging.

  596. but it will deliver

  597. something the other

  598. party will never

  599. be able to deliver.

  600. It will deliver life.

  601. You need to be willing

  602. to think deeply

  603. about the big questions

  604. of life.

  605. You need to leave

  606. behind your

  607. previous sense

  608. of self

  609. in as much

  610. as you discover

  611. that

  612. to be foolish.

  613. You need to be

  614. prepared to embrace

  615. a new world view

  616. a new lifestyle

  617. in short

  618. true wisdom.

  619. I don't know

  620. I'm not a big

  621. party person

  622. but

  623. in terms of

  624. the metaphor

  625. you can see

  626. one party

  627. is

  628. eminently

  629. appealing

  630. isn't it?

  631. And the other

  632. you just think

  633. and that's exactly

  634. the point of the passage.

  635. The party

  636. that Lady Wisdom

  637. throws

  638. doesn't present

  639. like an exciting

  640. fun party.

  641. few I suspect

  642. are interested

  643. in thinking

  644. about the invitation

  645. let alone

  646. committing to be

  647. at the party.

  648. Few are prepared

  649. to challenge

  650. popular belief

  651. of the crowd.

  652. That's what it is

  653. to be the average

  654. Australian.

  655. Go with the flow.

  656. And in brackets

  657. still say

  658. I'm evidence based.

  659. but those

  660. who do

  661. take up

  662. the invitation

  663. to Lady Wisdom's

  664. party

  665. discover

  666. that not only

  667. is it a brilliant

  668. party

  669. but it's actually

  670. an investment

  671. in the good life

  672. which lasts

  673. for eternity.

  674. So yeah

  675. there's an upfront

  676. cost

  677. but boy

  678. the cost

  679. is nothing

  680. compared to

  681. what the party

  682. itself delivers.

  683. so

  684. choices

  685. choices

  686. choices

  687. and how we make them

  688. choices

  689. and why we make them

  690. which party

  691. to buy into

  692. at first glance

  693. the choice

  694. would appear

  695. totally obvious

  696. wouldn't it

  697. when you set it out

  698. the way I've set it out

  699. you would choose

  700. life over death

  701. every time

  702. because remember

  703. that is the quest

  704. of life

  705. for every single person

  706. we want

  707. we're actually

  708. in our heart

  709. of hearts

  710. every person

  711. whether Christian

  712. or non-Christian

  713. every person

  714. is on that quest

  715. to find

  716. what is the good life

  717. and so

  718. if life's on offer

  719. then

  720. wouldn't we take

  721. life over death

  722. every time

  723. yes of course

  724. we would

  725. that's the obvious

  726. choice

  727. but here's the

  728. deceptiveness

  729. of foolishness

  730. in reality

  731. so many

  732. persist

  733. in pursuing

  734. the popular

  735. lifestyle of

  736. if it feels

  737. good

  738. and everyone

  739. else is doing

  740. it

  741. then

  742. it's got to be

  743. right

  744. it's got to be

  745. good

  746. it's got to be

  747. the best there is

  748. even when

  749. the evidence

  750. suggests

  751. it's foolish

  752. and when

  753. their own

  754. experience

  755. tells them

  756. that this

  757. life I pursued

  758. has actually

  759. failed to deliver

  760. the good life

  761. that it promised

  762. me it would

  763. deliver

  764. it's failed

  765. to deliver

  766. the security

  767. the intimacy

  768. the satisfaction

  769. which I crave

  770. in my heart

  771. of hearts

  772. and which it

  773. promises

  774. why

  775. well

  776. come to the

  777. last section

  778. so the two

  779. party invitations

  780. form a bracket

  781. around the chapter

  782. and then verses

  783. 70-12

  784. dig into

  785. this question

  786. of why

  787. why

  788. is something

  789. so obvious

  790. it's not

  791. automatic

  792. verse 70-12

  793. gives us a very

  794. simple principle

  795. and then I'll

  796. dig into it a little bit

  797. verse 70-12

  798. says really

  799. essentially this

  800. why do people

  801. pursue

  802. foolishness

  803. and destruction

  804. when the choice

  805. for life

  806. is obvious

  807. answer

  808. very simple

  809. it's a question

  810. of whether a person

  811. is teachable

  812. it's a question

  813. of whether they

  814. have discernment

  815. or not

  816. Proverbs has

  817. five or six

  818. different words

  819. to describe

  820. different aspects

  821. of foolishness

  822. that are used

  823. over all the

  824. chapters

  825. each

  826. remember

  827. I say again

  828. each describing

  829. mental attitude

  830. not mental

  831. capacity

  832. so there's

  833. nothing wrong

  834. with people's

  835. ability to think

  836. when they're

  837. called the

  838. simple

  839. or in verse

  840. 7

  841. when they're

  842. called a

  843. scoffer

  844. the simple

  845. person is now

  846. described as

  847. the scoffer

  848. the same

  849. person

  850. but here

  851. the word

  852. has an emphasis

  853. on being fixed

  854. in their thinking

  855. being closed

  856. minded

  857. now I've said

  858. before the

  859. average Australian

  860. presents as

  861. open minded

  862. what I would

  863. argue is

  864. actually closed

  865. minded

  866. and

  867. unteachable

  868. they claim

  869. to be

  870. evidence

  871. shaped

  872. yet generally

  873. go with the

  874. flow of what

  875. is popular

  876. you speak to

  877. them

  878. and they're

  879. absolutely

  880. confident

  881. that they

  882. know

  883. what life

  884. is about

  885. and they'll

  886. back themselves

  887. in what life

  888. is about

  889. yet at the

  890. same time

  891. you're

  892. thinking

  893. hang on

  894. a minute

  895. you're not

  896. showing me

  897. any evidence

  898. you've actually

  899. thought deeply

  900. about this

  901. and when you

  902. challenge the

  903. average Australian

  904. man you find

  905. how seriously

  906. they dislike

  907. challenge or

  908. correction

  909. recognition of

  910. their world

  911. view

  912. they'll back

  913. themselves and

  914. their own

  915. form of

  916. wisdom

  917. every time

  918. so totally

  919. committed to

  920. their own

  921. autonomy

  922. their own

  923. form of

  924. wisdom

  925. as they

  926. chase the

  927. good life

  928. that in the

  929. end they

  930. interpret every

  931. circumstance as

  932. supporting what

  933. they already

  934. believe

  935. and when things

  936. go wrong

  937. their response is

  938. to back

  939. themselves

  940. and blame

  941. others

  942. why is my

  943. life falling

  944. apart

  945. well because

  946. they did this

  947. and he did

  948. that and she

  949. did that

  950. and society

  951. has let me

  952. down

  953. never

  954. oh my goodness

  955. maybe I've got

  956. the wrong

  957. world view

  958. in stark

  959. contrast

  960. verse 9

  961. the wise

  962. person

  963. knows their

  964. heart

  965. or knows

  966. something of

  967. their heart

  968. the wise

  969. person is

  970. suspicious of

  971. their attitudes

  972. they recognize

  973. their potential

  974. for foolishness

  975. a few weeks

  976. ago

  977. Bo spoke

  978. about that

  979. as the

  980. paradox of

  981. the gospel

  982. paradox of

  983. proverbs

  984. that the

  985. person who's

  986. starting to

  987. nurture wisdom

  988. actually begins

  989. by acknowledging

  990. foolishness

  991. and seeking

  992. external wisdom

  993. external guidance

  994. external rule

  995. in life because

  996. we've made a

  997. mess of our

  998. own lives

  999. and we

  1000. can't even

  1001. sort of

  1002. trust our

  1003. own

  1004. motivations

  1005. our own

  1006. analysis

  1007. to work out

  1008. what's right

  1009. and what's

  1010. wrong sometimes

  1011. we need an

  1012. external source

  1013. as a reference

  1014. point

  1015. in verse 10

  1016. that process

  1017. of wisdom

  1018. and it is a

  1019. process

  1020. verse 10

  1021. leads

  1022. to the

  1023. Lord

  1024. as a source

  1025. of real

  1026. wisdom

  1027. and ultimately

  1028. the source

  1029. of the good

  1030. life

  1031. but notice

  1032. again you

  1033. see we've

  1034. said this

  1035. over many

  1036. weeks now

  1037. verse 10

  1038. the fear

  1039. of the

  1040. Lord

  1041. the fear

  1042. of the

  1043. Lord is

  1044. much more

  1045. than

  1046. acknowledgement

  1047. of his

  1048. existence

  1049. it's much

  1050. more than

  1051. just a sort

  1052. of general

  1053. respect

  1054. for God

  1055. as being

  1056. part of

  1057. our universe

  1058. fearing the

  1059. Lord is

  1060. actually craving

  1061. knowledge of

  1062. him

  1063. that only

  1064. comes through

  1065. relationship

  1066. with him

  1067. and exposure

  1068. to his

  1069. character

  1070. and purpose

  1071. which in

  1072. turn then

  1073. overflows

  1074. practically

  1075. into all

  1076. of life

  1077. and verse

  1078. 11 then

  1079. sort of

  1080. gives some

  1081. illustration

  1082. of that

  1083. wisdom

  1084. or understanding

  1085. of success

  1086. or understanding

  1087. of happiness

  1088. and security

  1089. of life

  1090. is shaped

  1091. ultimately

  1092. by a

  1093. person's

  1094. view of

  1095. God

  1096. by understanding

  1097. God's

  1098. character

  1099. and by

  1100. relationship

  1101. with him

  1102. that overflows

  1103. as I take

  1104. on and form

  1105. the mind

  1106. of the Lord

  1107. in the Lord

  1108. Jesus Christ

  1109. then I start

  1110. to understand

  1111. wisdom

  1112. I start to

  1113. express wisdom

  1114. I start to

  1115. live wisely

  1116. in God's

  1117. world

  1118. and so

  1119. in summary

  1120. and if you

  1121. haven't heard

  1122. anything else

  1123. or haven't

  1124. connected

  1125. try and

  1126. listen to

  1127. this

  1128. connection

  1129. here

  1130. it's on

  1131. the outline

  1132. that's on

  1133. the back

  1134. of your

  1135. bulletin

  1136. in summary

  1137. then

  1138. the principle

  1139. of teachability

  1140. or discernment

  1141. is a

  1142. process

  1143. we start

  1144. with choices

  1145. and those

  1146. choices

  1147. hundreds

  1148. thousands

  1149. of them

  1150. will be

  1151. choices

  1152. either

  1153. towards

  1154. wisdom

  1155. or towards

  1156. foolishness

  1157. over a

  1158. period of

  1159. time

  1160. our

  1161. choices

  1162. actually

  1163. shape

  1164. and form

  1165. our

  1166. character

  1167. so our

  1168. character

  1169. then will

  1170. either be

  1171. increasingly

  1172. discerning

  1173. and growing

  1174. in wisdom

  1175. or

  1176. increasingly

  1177. drifting

  1178. into

  1179. foolishness

  1180. greater

  1181. foolishness

  1182. choices

  1183. choices

  1184. character

  1185. and ultimately

  1186. all of that

  1187. will determine

  1188. destiny

  1189. life

  1190. or death

  1191. my friends

  1192. hear this

  1193. wisdom

  1194. is not

  1195. simply

  1196. a one

  1197. off

  1198. choice

  1199. that we

  1200. make as

  1201. Christians

  1202. or we

  1203. make as

  1204. people

  1205. and sometimes

  1206. I think

  1207. that's what

  1208. we think

  1209. wisdom is

  1210. wisdom

  1211. now we

  1212. get wisdom

  1213. in a

  1214. one

  1215. off

  1216. choice

  1217. as we

  1218. come to

  1219. Jesus

  1220. no

  1221. question

  1222. about that

  1223. but

  1224. nurturing

  1225. wisdom

  1226. and becoming

  1227. wise

  1228. is a

  1229. lifetime

  1230. progression

  1231. people

  1232. people do

  1233. not discover

  1234. life

  1235. or stumble

  1236. into

  1237. destruction

  1238. through

  1239. one

  1240. isolated

  1241. decision

  1242. it's not

  1243. one

  1244. strike

  1245. and you're

  1246. out

  1247. but it's

  1248. a process

  1249. of choices

  1250. wisdom

  1251. is a process

  1252. of choice

  1253. reflecting

  1254. attitude

  1255. to God

  1256. and reflecting

  1257. conclusions

  1258. about the

  1259. source

  1260. and shape

  1261. of the

  1262. good life

  1263. and ultimately

  1264. and that's

  1265. what the

  1266. point of

  1267. verse 12

  1268. is

  1269. I spent

  1270. a long

  1271. time

  1272. trying to

  1273. work out

  1274. verse 12

  1275. I think

  1276. this is

  1277. what it

  1278. is

  1279. ultimately

  1280. that

  1281. process

  1282. is for

  1283. each

  1284. person

  1285. and each

  1286. person

  1287. alone

  1288. to own

  1289. if you're

  1290. wise

  1291. you're wise

  1292. for yourself

  1293. if you

  1294. scoff

  1295. you alone

  1296. will bear

  1297. it

  1298. we so

  1299. readily

  1300. blame

  1301. other

  1302. people

  1303. even

  1304. for our

  1305. own

  1306. choices

  1307. we blame

  1308. other

  1309. people

  1310. for the

  1311. consequences

  1312. of our

  1313. choices

  1314. I think

  1315. wisdom

  1316. says

  1317. that

  1318. how

  1319. we can

  1320. only look

  1321. at ourselves

  1322. for our

  1323. choices

  1324. and the

  1325. consequences

  1326. and the

  1327. destiny

  1328. that comes

  1329. from it

  1330. when you

  1331. look at

  1332. your own

  1333. character

  1334. and when I

  1335. look at

  1336. my character

  1337. I am me

  1338. I have to

  1339. take responsibility

  1340. for my

  1341. character

  1342. because it's

  1343. the product

  1344. of all those

  1345. choices

  1346. over many

  1347. years

  1348. I might

  1349. like to

  1350. blame other

  1351. people

  1352. but I have

  1353. to take

  1354. ownership

  1355. for it

  1356. whether

  1357. wise

  1358. or

  1359. foolish

  1360. it's

  1361. yours

  1362. to

  1363. own

  1364. no point

  1365. trying to

  1366. scam out

  1367. of it

  1368. it's

  1369. still

  1370. yours

  1371. to

  1372. own

  1373. you

  1374. can

  1375. blame

  1376. whoever

  1377. you like

  1378. but it's

  1379. still

  1380. yours

  1381. to

  1382. own

  1383. and that's

  1384. why

  1385. there's an

  1386. urgent call

  1387. in this

  1388. passage

  1389. to

  1390. nurture

  1391. discernment

  1392. as the

  1393. pathway

  1394. to wisdom

  1395. and the

  1396. climax here

  1397. takes us

  1398. back to

  1399. the very

  1400. opening

  1401. verses

  1402. of

  1403. Proverbs

    Proverbs 1:1–6

  1404. chapter

  1405. 1

  1406. verses

  1407. 1

  1408. to 6

  1409. wisdom

  1410. is more

  1411. than

  1412. intellectual

  1413. knowledge

  1414. you can

  1415. have a

  1416. massive

  1417. intellectual

  1418. knowledge

  1419. and still

  1420. be a

  1421. fool

  1422. wisdom

  1423. is applied

  1424. knowledge

  1425. first of

  1426. all

  1427. accumulating

  1428. the right

  1429. knowledge

  1430. true

  1431. knowledge

  1432. but

  1433. ultimately

  1434. wisdom

  1435. is applying

  1436. that knowledge

  1437. and knowing

  1438. how to

  1439. apply that

  1440. knowledge

  1441. in every

  1442. situation

  1443. of life

  1444. that's

  1445. discernment

  1446. and it's

  1447. a paradox

  1448. as I

  1449. mentioned

  1450. a few

  1451. minutes

  1452. ago

  1453. it begins

  1454. by

  1455. recognizing

  1456. that our

  1457. natural

  1458. expression

  1459. of wisdom

  1460. is actually

  1461. foolishness

  1462. and counterfeit

  1463. and leads

  1464. to a cheap

  1465. imitation

  1466. of the good

  1467. life we

  1468. crave

  1469. wisdom

  1470. begins as we

  1471. recognize our

  1472. closed minded

  1473. autonomy

  1474. and we recognize

  1475. that that has

  1476. kept us from

  1477. considering properly

  1478. God's alternative

  1479. as an alternative

  1480. and God's word

  1481. says we get

  1482. wisdom when we

  1483. come to God

  1484. through Jesus

  1485. who is the

  1486. embodiment of

  1487. wisdom

  1488. 1 Corinthians

  1489. and we grow

  1490. in wisdom

  1491. as God's

  1492. spirit shapes

  1493. new character

  1494. in us

  1495. expressed in a

  1496. willingness to

  1497. self-examine

  1498. and a new

  1499. struggle to make

  1500. every choice of

  1501. life a reflection

  1502. of God's

  1503. character

  1504. that's what it

  1505. is to grow

  1506. in wisdom

  1507. and here's the

  1508. appeal of

  1509. scripture

  1510. it's in

  1511. Proverbs

  1512. and it's

  1513. right through

  1514. the scripture

  1515. Psalm

  1516. I'm going to

  1517. just use

  1518. two

  1519. I could have

  1520. used dozens

  1521. Psalm 34

    Psalms 34:8

  1522. verse 8

  1523. says this

  1524. and it's a

  1525. lovely picture

  1526. in the context

  1527. of a feast

  1528. it says this

  1529. test and see

  1530. that the Lord

  1531. is good

  1532. taste and see

  1533. that the Lord

  1534. is good

  1535. that's an

  1536. invitation

  1537. to a feast

  1538. a satisfying

  1539. soul

  1540. satisfying

  1541. feast

  1542. now

  1543. how will you

  1544. respond

  1545. will you be

  1546. like the

  1547. brattish

  1548. closed

  1549. minded

  1550. child

  1551. who looks

  1552. at the

  1553. vegetable

  1554. on the

  1555. plate

  1556. and says

  1557. no

  1558. I'm not

  1559. going to

  1560. eat it

  1561. I know

  1562. it's not

  1563. going to

  1564. be nice

  1565. I've never

  1566. done that

  1567. but I heard

  1568. other people

  1569. have children

  1570. who've done

  1571. that

  1572. I don't

  1573. think I

  1574. knew what

  1575. vegetables

  1576. was until

  1577. I was a

  1578. teenager

  1579. but anyway

  1580. unless there

  1581. was something

  1582. to throw

  1583. at your

  1584. brothers

  1585. so there's

  1586. your choice

  1587. you see

  1588. will you be

  1589. like that

  1590. closed

  1591. minded

  1592. child

  1593. and that's

  1594. what it

  1595. is

  1596. they look

  1597. at the

  1598. thing and

  1599. they make

  1600. a decision

  1601. about it

  1602. before they

  1603. even try

  1604. it

  1605. or

  1606. different

  1607. picture

  1608. will you

  1609. heed the

  1610. urging of

  1611. Romans chapter

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  1612. 12

  1613. 1 to 3

  1614. you can look

  1615. it up in

  1616. your own

  1617. time

  1618. essentially

  1619. there it

  1620. says

  1621. don't be

  1622. conformed

  1623. to what

  1624. the majority

  1625. are doing

  1626. on the

  1627. basis that

  1628. it feels

  1629. right and

  1630. the majority

  1631. are doing

  1632. it

  1633. rather

  1634. it says

  1635. be daring

  1636. be willing

  1637. to be

  1638. transformed

  1639. by the

  1640. renewal

  1641. of desires

  1642. and attitudes

  1643. and thinking

  1644. which in

  1645. turn it

  1646. says will

  1647. actually lead

  1648. you to

  1649. prove that

  1650. God's

  1651. wisdom

  1652. actually works

  1653. both

  1654. factually

  1655. and

  1656. experientially

  1657. and in

  1658. the end

  1659. my friends

  1660. that's what

  1661. I hear

  1662. all around

  1663. me

  1664. in Australia

  1665. our post

  1666. modern

  1667. post

  1668. most modern

  1669. society

  1670. don't tell

  1671. me if

  1672. something's

  1673. factually

  1674. correct

  1675. I want

  1676. to know

  1677. if it

  1678. works

  1679. if I

  1680. can

  1681. get the

  1682. experience

  1683. of the

  1684. good

  1685. life

  1686. that I'm

  1687. craving

  1688. Romans

  1689. says

  1690. you've

  1691. got to

  1692. be

  1693. prepared

  1694. to

  1695. be

  1696. transformed

  1697. to walk

  1698. away

  1699. from old

  1700. patterns

  1701. of thinking

  1702. to walk

  1703. into new

  1704. patterns

  1705. of thinking

  1706. new

  1707. attitudes

  1708. new

  1709. desires

  1710. a new

  1711. world

  1712. view

  1713. and if

  1714. you do

  1715. that

  1716. Romans

  1717. says

  1718. you will

  1719. find

  1720. the

  1721. proof

  1722. it will

  1723. be

  1724. self

  1725. authenticating

  1726. my friends

  1727. discernment

  1728. is not

  1729. seen

  1730. in quick

  1731. fix

  1732. decisions

  1733. and I

  1734. think

  1735. as

  1736. Christians

  1737. we're

  1738. still

  1739. totally

  1740. hooked

  1741. up on

  1742. that

  1743. we just

  1744. and I

  1745. include

  1746. myself

  1747. we just

  1748. want

  1749. life

  1750. to be

  1751. simple

  1752. we don't

  1753. want to

  1754. be having

  1755. to make

  1756. decisions

  1757. every day

  1758. make a

  1759. decision

  1760. Monday

  1761. morning

  1762. at nine

  1763. o'clock

  1764. and let

  1765. that cover

  1766. the whole

  1767. week

  1768. is what

  1769. we'd

  1770. like

  1771. at least

  1772. that's

  1773. what I

  1774. would

  1775. like

  1776. oftentimes

  1777. but it's

  1778. foolishness

  1779. discernment

  1780. is not

  1781. seen in

  1782. quick

  1783. thick

  1784. decision

  1785. but it's

  1786. seen in

  1787. the way

  1788. of long

  1789. training

  1790. and discipline

  1791. not simply

  1792. informing your

  1793. mind with

  1794. God's words

  1795. so that you

  1796. know what

  1797. is right

  1798. lots of

  1799. Christians

  1800. do that

  1801. they can

  1802. say oh

  1803. yes this

  1804. is what

  1805. the Bible

  1806. says about

  1807. this

  1808. this

  1809. and this

  1810. and this

  1811. not just

  1812. disciplining

  1813. your will

  1814. impractical

  1815. commitment

  1816. to doing

  1817. what you

  1818. know to

  1819. be right

  1820. yep

  1821. I'm going

  1822. to do

  1823. this

  1824. and not

  1825. this

  1826. because

  1827. that's

  1828. what the

  1829. Bible

  1830. tells me

  1831. today

  1832. but

  1833. training

  1834. the heart

  1835. to new

  1836. delight

  1837. in the

  1838. Lord

  1839. himself

  1840. so that

  1841. you follow

  1842. his pathway

  1843. to life

  1844. because

  1845. he

  1846. he

  1847. in this

  1848. person

  1849. is supremely

  1850. attractive

  1851. and beautiful

  1852. I

  1853. want

  1854. to be

  1855. like

  1856. my

  1857. father

  1858. I

  1859. want

  1860. to be

  1861. like

  1862. the

  1863. Lord

  1864. Jesus

  1865. Christ

  1866. oh

  1867. and guess

  1868. what

  1869. overflows

  1870. out of

  1871. that

  1872. and if

  1873. you're a

  1874. person

  1875. and I'm

  1876. finishing

  1877. this

  1878. if you're

  1879. a person

  1880. who has

  1881. not yet

  1882. made a

  1883. choice

  1884. for wisdom

  1885. and there

  1886. will be

  1887. some

  1888. here

  1889. this

  1890. morning

  1891. whether

  1892. you're

  1893. in your

  1894. teenage

  1895. years

  1896. or younger

  1897. or

  1898. whether

  1899. the other

  1900. end of the

  1901. spectrum

  1902. and older

  1903. there'll be

  1904. some

  1905. here

  1906. this

  1907. morning

  1908. who's

  1909. not

  1910. yet

  1911. made a

  1912. choice

  1913. for wisdom

  1914. I say

  1915. to you

  1916. take

  1917. the first

  1918. step

  1919. now

  1920. before you

  1921. leave this

  1922. building

  1923. today

  1924. admit

  1925. that your

  1926. commitment

  1927. to autonomy

  1928. has led

  1929. you down

  1930. a dead

  1931. end

  1932. road

  1933. I suspect

  1934. that the fact

  1935. you're here

  1936. today

  1937. says that

  1938. something

  1939. about your

  1940. life

  1941. hasn't quite

  1942. delivered

  1943. and you're

  1944. looking

  1945. perhaps

  1946. for something

  1947. else

  1948. well

  1949. recognize

  1950. your autonomy

  1951. and recognize

  1952. how it has

  1953. taken you

  1954. down a

  1955. dead end

  1956. road

  1957. admit

  1958. that your

  1959. problem thus

  1960. far in life

  1961. is not so

  1962. much a lack

  1963. of knowledge

  1964. or desire

  1965. but an

  1966. empty heart

  1967. that is

  1968. settled for

  1969. fast food

  1970. instead of

  1971. the satisfying

  1972. feast offered

  1973. by Jesus

  1974. if you

  1975. want to pray

  1976. something really

  1977. really worthwhile

  1978. for yourself

  1979. and I include

  1980. everybody and I

  1981. include myself

  1982. let's pray for

  1983. discernment

  1984. let's pray

  1985. that we might

  1986. know what

  1987. is the right

  1988. thing to do

  1989. and that we do

  1990. it because we

  1991. delight in the

  1992. Lord

  1993. let's pray

  1994. Lord help us

  1995. to see the

  1996. deceptiveness

  1997. of foolishness

  1998. in our world

  1999. help us to

  2000. see how easily

  2001. we can be

  2002. fooled by

  2003. ourselves

  2004. Lord your

  2005. word tells us

  2006. that our

  2007. hearts are

  2008. deceptively

  2009. wicked

  2010. and we

  2011. think we're

  2012. in charge

  2013. of them

  2014. Lord but

  2015. often times

  2016. they're in

  2017. charge of

  2018. us

  2019. help us

  2020. Lord to

  2021. look for

  2022. autonomy

  2023. that keeps

  2024. us from

  2025. your pathway

  2026. of wisdom

  2027. and help

  2028. us Lord to

  2029. be willing

  2030. to step

  2031. away from

  2032. that which

  2033. we've been

  2034. committed to

  2035. perhaps Lord

  2036. for 20

  2037. 30 40

  2038. 50 years

  2039. help us to

  2040. step away

  2041. from that

  2042. into new

  2043. life

  2044. in the

  2045. Lord Jesus

  2046. Christ in

  2047. his name we

  2048. pray

  2049. Amen
