  1. Acts of the Apostles.

  2. Over the last five weeks, we've seen something strange about the Acts of the Apostles,

  3. and that is the Acts of the Apostles isn't actually about the Acts of the Apostles.

  4. Sounds a bit weird.

  5. But primarily, the Acts of the Apostles is about the unstoppable Jesus.

  6. The unstoppable Jesus gathering his died-for people from the four corners of the earth.

  7. The first volume of this was Luke's Gospel, talking about how Jesus actually died for his people.

  8. Now Jesus is gathering them for the four points of the earth.

  9. Why is he gathering them?

  10. Because he wants them to be a wonderful spiritual empire that we call the church.

  11. Now, of course, the apostles had a critical role in Jesus' mission.

  12. They were appointed as witnesses.

  13. Witnesses of God's long-promised, long-awaited Savior and King.

  14. And as we've gone through each of the five weeks, we've seen what happens when the Gospel of Jesus is spoken.

  15. Remember?

  16. Ordinary people speaking the extraordinary Gospel of Jesus.

  17. What happens?

  18. Well, all sorts of people are radically changed.

  19. That's what happens.

  20. From the inside out.

  21. According to chapter 4, verse 4, we're at passage this morning.

  22. That number is now in excess of 5,000 people.

  23. Just get a feel of that.

  24. Radically changed.

  25. People who've turned to Jesus in repentance.

  26. People who've now received complete forgiveness for their sin.

  27. They've received a fresh start in new relationship with God.

  28. A new acceptance before God.

  29. Including, as we saw last week, this 40-year-old who had been profoundly disabled.

  30. Unable to walk since birth.

  31. And he, above all else, was thought to be visibly, thought to be carrying the curse of God.

  32. That's how the Jews would have viewed him.

  33. And yet, this man also was just renewed and swept into the kingdom of Jesus.

  34. Nobody is beyond the scope and the power of the Gospel of Jesus.

  35. And the renewing of Jesus.

  36. But that's not all of it.

  37. This renewal was expressed in a radical new community.

  38. We see that at the end of chapter 2.

  39. A radical new community defined and shaped by the mind of Jesus.

  40. And we're told in chapter 2 that that community was marked out by people's concern to learn more about God's salvation.

  41. To share in thankfulness to God, one with the other, and together.

  42. Thankfulness for God's mercy and grace.

  43. And they were caring for one another.

  44. Practically.

  45. Deeply.

  46. And all of that combined to make them such a winsome community.

  47. That people on the outside were looking in saying, hey, I want a part of that.

  48. And so, they themselves were responsible for more people being attracted to the Gospel.

  49. More people receiving a fresh start.

  50. Now, if you want an exciting picture.

  51. Man, the first three or four chapters of Acts give you just that.

  52. An exciting picture.

  53. What do we expect when we speak the Gospel of Jesus?

  54. Make it more personal.

  55. What do you expect when you speak this Gospel of Jesus?

  56. At risk of perhaps being negative.

  57. Do you expect anything if you speak the Gospel of Jesus?

  58. Well, with all that excitement behind us, suddenly we move into chapter 4.

  59. And it seems like all the excitement just disappears, dissipates.

  60. And things go terribly, terribly dark.

  61. Over the next two or three weeks, we're going to see the rise of opposition.

  62. Opposition from outside in.

  63. And even more awful, opposition from inside out.

  64. But things go dark.

  65. The Gospel of Jesus, which has given thousands a fresh start in relationship with God,

  66. now attracts opposition and persecution.

  67. So, we need to add one more thing.

  68. What happens?

  69. What can we expect when we hear the Gospel of Jesus spoken?

  70. And the answer needs to be opposition.

  71. Persecution.

  72. Persecution.

  73. We pick up the story here.

  74. Once again, these Jewish political and religious authorities make it their business to stop any mention of Jesus.

  75. Making it their business to reverse any influence that they perceive Jesus might be having.

  76. Just a few weeks earlier, we're not sure exactly what time gap there is between the start of Acts and chapter 4.

  77. But it could be as little as 6 or 7 weeks.

  78. It could be a couple of months, 3 or 4 months.

  79. But just recently, anyway, these guys had sought to silence Jesus by having them murdered illegally.

  80. And they're up for the task again.

  81. But, as we move into the story, we need to take with us this thought.

  82. That as their first attempt to stop the unstoppable Jesus was an exercise in futility,

  83. then so this attempt will be an exercise in futility.

  84. We'll see that as the story plays out over the next few weeks.

  85. Let's look at the story with the first heading, then.

  86. A strong Gospel will most likely bring strong opposition.

  87. Picking up the first 22 verses, really, just the story.

  88. So, verse 1.

  89. Quite literally, Peter is mid-sentence.

  90. He's explaining how Jesus was the fulfillment of God's foundation promise of salvation.

  91. And mid-sentence, he's interrupted.

  92. And he's interrupted by a sizable contingent of people.

  93. We're told here, as Simon reminds us,

  94. the commander of the temple police was a contingent of police.

  95. The duty priests at the temple.

  96. A contingent of Sadducees.

  97. They were the religious professors of the day.

  98. Pretty heavy duty guys.

  99. All of these made part of the Jewish religious authorities.

  100. What's their intention?

  101. Very clear.

  102. They're going to silence any reference to Jesus.

  103. And so, only hours after healing,

  104. this profoundly disabled guy,

  105. Peter and John were illegally arrested and locked up.

  106. Just hours later.

  107. He hasn't even finished explaining the context of it.

  108. And he's dragged off and locked up.

  109. Why?

  110. Well, we're told in verse 2.

  111. At first glance, it seems like it was a sort of doctrinal problem.

  112. These Sadducees took exception.

  113. They didn't believe in resurrection.

  114. So, the Sadducees appeared to take exception to Peter and John speaking about the resurrection of Jesus.

  115. But another possibility is that these guys were just intellectually outraged.

  116. Because here are these uneducated, unsophisticated fishermen teaching the people in the temple precincts.

  117. And these sort of Jewish religious professors may well have taken that, you know, not well.

  118. How dare they?

  119. Whatever the reason at heart, it was an association with Jesus.

  120. These men, Peter and John, in their eyes were enemies of the truth.

  121. They were danger to God's people.

  122. They needed to be stopped.

  123. The next day, Peter and John would have been seriously intimidated because they were dragged before what we would call today a high court.

  124. Hastily convened.

  125. And even that would have echoes in their mind of just a few weeks earlier.

  126. That's exactly what happened with Jesus.

  127. The heaviest court in the land, the Sanhedrin, was sort of rushed together, patched together for an ad hoc meeting.

  128. And Peter and John were dragged before this court.

  129. Now remember, this court was therefore full of the brightest professors of Jewish religion.

  130. They were full of the most powerful Jewish political leaders who only weeks earlier had actually manipulated the Roman governor into turning a blind eye to an illegal murder.

  131. These were seriously powerful men.

  132. They had the power of life and death.

  133. Weeks earlier, they had murdered Jesus without regard for truth or justice.

  134. Yet, we're told in verse 7 that Peter and John are stood before them.

  135. Uneducated, unsophisticated men are stood before them and asked to give account of what had just happened.

  136. Overkill, you'd say.

  137. Serious intimidation.

  138. But their attempt to intimidate Peter into silence failed abjectly.

  139. Verses 8 to 12.

  140. Peter sort of takes a deep breath and you can just see it happening, can't you?

  141. You can see him fighting down the fear and the nerves.

  142. Trying to get control of his breathing and speech.

  143. Takes a deep breath and with the enabling of God's spirit, we're told.

  144. Looks them in the eye.

  145. And repeats to these powerful men the same thing as he'd repeated to the crowd, as he'd said to the crowd the day before.

  146. He'd talked to them about Jesus.

  147. Now, that's what they call tweaking the tiger's tail, is it not?

  148. You're standing there in the clink because of what you said about Jesus.

  149. And you turn to the guys who've got the power of life and death and talk to them about Jesus.

  150. Phew.

  151. Strong stuff, isn't it?

  152. And once again we see that the real issue is not the actual healing of the man.

  153. They don't seem to have a particular issue with that.

  154. They can't argue with what they see with their eyes.

  155. No, the problem for them is their association with Jesus.

  156. These guys thought they'd gotten rid of Jesus.

  157. But through the words of Peter and John, he's back.

  158. And once again drawing huge crowds.

  159. Once again influencing deep responses from those crowds.

  160. And look at verse 12.

  161. I don't think it's possible to get more bold than what Peter's just going to say.

  162. There's salvation in no one else.

  163. For there's no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

  164. And in that sentence, Peter exposes the useless traditions of the Jewish religious leaders and Judaism.

  165. He exposes their blindness.

  166. He exposes their false teaching.

  167. He exposes their sin and their wickedness.

  168. Which interestingly connects back to chapter 3, verse 26.

  169. Because the whole point, Peter had been saying to the crowd, the whole point of God sending Jesus was to deliver his people from wickedness.

  170. And here we see, rather than being delivered from wickedness, we see these guys pursuing wickedness.

  171. They taught, these Jewish religious leaders taught, that heaven was secured by performing religious duties.

  172. Going to the temple, saying your prayer.

  173. Giving alms to the poor on your way to pray.

  174. Peter says, salvation or acceptance with God is only found through faith in Jesus and is actually undeserved.

  175. Chug and cheese.

  176. They believed they were actually protecting God's name and God's character by killing Jesus.

  177. Peter says, verse 11,

  178. Uh-uh.

  179. You guys need to understand that what you did with Jesus was essentially a rejection of not only God's plan of salvation,

  180. but a rejection of God himself.

  181. That's not really looking for common ground here, is it?

  182. They taught that God kept heaven for good religious Jews.

  183. Which meant that people like that profoundly handicapped man would never have gotten into heaven.

  184. But there he is before them.

  185. With Peter saying that this newly healed cripple was proof that heaven was for sinners.

  186. That heaven was precisely for people who were under the curse of God.

  187. Heaven was for sinners who turned to Jesus alone for their salvation like this man had just done the day before.

  188. Friends, I suspect, as we read into the story here,

  189. these guys, this Sanhedrin, this Supreme Jewish Council, this Supreme Court,

  190. a term we might recognize,

  191. were utterly frustrated and seething with anger.

  192. And so,

  193. they're caught.

  194. They can't silence Peter.

  195. They can't deny the reality of this guy standing before them healed and praising God

  196. and looking to Jesus as a source of his healing.

  197. They're surprised, utterly surprised by Peter's confident defense.

  198. Their options are severely limited.

  199. And so, what do they do?

  200. They revert to type.

  201. And they physically threaten violence on Peter and John before releasing them.

  202. In their frustration,

  203. they're saying that something needs to be done here.

  204. But they recognize they couldn't simply kill Peter and John

  205. because, if nothing else,

  206. a fear of the crowd.

  207. The crowd had seen what happened.

  208. They couldn't deny it.

  209. And the crowd as a whole were just praising God,

  210. not quite understanding exactly what happened and how it happened,

  211. but they could see the evidence of it.

  212. So,

  213. in a sort of lame

  214. conclusion to this big drama,

  215. they call Peter and John in again and threaten them.

  216. Say,

  217. look,

  218. we're going to release you,

  219. but we're warning you,

  220. do not speak of Jesus again

  221. or there'll be trouble.

  222. And once again,

  223. Peter looks them in the eye and says,

  224. well,

  225. you'll need to do what you do,

  226. but I can tell you now,

  227. I cannot but speak about Jesus.

  228. Now,

  229. that wouldn't have

  230. sort of

  231. helped the

  232. speaker of the Sanhedrin

  233. to sort of settle down inside,

  234. would it?

  235. Peter's defying them.

  236. Not only defying them,

  237. but defying them

  238. knowing full well

  239. what it's going to mean

  240. physically.

  241. It was a big call.

  242. Friends,

  243. let's just prop there for a minute

  244. and just

  245. step back

  246. and get a bird's eye

  247. in the story.

  248. Now,

  249. it's an absolutely

  250. amazing

  251. and

  252. unexpected

  253. response

  254. to what was

  255. an incredible miracle.

  256. Less than 24 hours earlier

  257. and everybody could see

  258. the evidence of it.

  259. Unexpected

  260. and sad response

  261. because these guys

  262. seem to be

  263. totally

  264. lacking

  265. any joy

  266. at seeing

  267. this man

  268. suffering

  269. relieved.

  270. Their only

  271. concern

  272. appears to be

  273. to stop

  274. any mention

  275. of Jesus.

  276. and they've

  277. taken the decision

  278. once again

  279. that if violence

  280. is their only

  281. option,

  282. then violence

  283. is a good

  284. option.

  285. And Peter and John

  286. would have left

  287. that,

  288. been released

  289. knowing that

  290. full well.

  291. So,

  292. bring it up

  293. into our day.

  294. the cost

  295. of refusing

  296. to be

  297. intimidated

  298. and silenced,

  299. I would suggest

  300. he continues

  301. unchanged

  302. in our own

  303. day.

  304. How sad

  305. is it then

  306. that we are

  307. so quickly

  308. prepared

  309. to pay

  310. the cost

  311. of not

  312. speaking

  313. about Jesus?

  314. Now,

  315. my friends

  316. call me

  317. Eeyore,

  318. so I put

  319. that really

  320. negatively

  321. there,

  322. didn't I?

  323. Because I

  324. want to

  325. emphasize

  326. that the

  327. point is

  328. that a

  329. quiet life

  330. can be

  331. purchased,

  332. it may be

  333. purchased.

  334. The world

  335. out there

  336. makes it

  337. clear to us

  338. you can

  339. purchase a

  340. quiet life,

  341. you can

  342. exist well

  343. among us.

  344. But the

  345. cost of that

  346. quiet life

  347. being quiet

  348. about Jesus.

  349. Being silent

  350. about Jesus

  351. before our

  352. families,

  353. and gosh,

  354. we know

  355. how easy

  356. that is.

  357. It's horrible

  358. to be closed

  359. out of family

  360. discussions.

  361. Christians.

  362. It's horrible

  363. to see the

  364. family cluster

  365. over here

  366. and leave

  367. one stuck

  368. out like a

  369. sore thumb

  370. who happens

  371. to be the

  372. Christian.

  373. It hurts.

  374. It's difficult.

  375. It makes

  376. family gatherings

  377. just awfully

  378. tense.

  379. but the

  380. contract's

  381. on the

  382. table.

  383. You can

  384. be back

  385. in the

  386. family

  387. if you

  388. shut up

  389. about that

  390. Jesus of

  391. yours.

  392. Same

  393. applies for

  394. workmates

  395. in the

  396. workplace,

  397. friends and

  398. neighbors.

  399. We've got a

  400. neighbor across

  401. the road who

  402. hasn't spoken

  403. to us in

  404. 20 years

  405. except to

  406. swear at us.

  407. Keeps

  408. telling all the

  409. other neighbors

  410. he's really

  411. friendly with

  412. how we've

  413. devalued the

  414. neighborhood.

  415. We've

  416. devalued the

  417. price of

  418. houses.

  419. We've

  420. devalued

  421. everything.

  422. Why?

  423. I've asked

  424. him.

  425. He's never

  426. been able to

  427. tell me.

  428. He just

  429. yells at

  430. me.

  431. I suspect

  432. it's because

  433. I'm a

  434. Christian.

  435. We're a

  436. Christian.

  437. And it

  438. hurts.

  439. It hurts

  440. when you see

  441. the neighbors

  442. round about

  443. chatting away

  444. and

  445. that's

  446. not

  447. extended to

  448. us.

  449. Likewise,

  450. my friends,

  451. a quiet

  452. form of

  453. Christian

  454. life can

  455. be purchased

  456. through a

  457. modified gospel.

  458. That's a real

  459. pressure as

  460. well.

  461. So if we

  462. have a form

  463. of gospel

  464. that sort of

  465. plays down

  466. unique and

  467. life-changing

  468. confrontation with

  469. Jesus, if

  470. we decide to

  471. be flexible,

  472. if we

  473. decide we'll

  474. just fit with

  475. where people

  476. are at,

  477. and everybody

  478. has a view

  479. of God they

  480. would like to

  481. sort of

  482. operate with

  483. and hold

  484. on to,

  485. and a view

  486. of what it

  487. means to do

  488. life well,

  489. well, if we

  490. can just

  491. accommodate

  492. that, then

  493. we will have

  494. a quiet

  495. life.

  496. People around

  497. us will

  498. think we're

  499. nice.

  500. But friends,

  501. surely the

  502. cost of no

  503. opposition is

  504. the cost of

  505. betraying the

  506. gospel.

  507. Surely that

  508. cost would be

  509. far greater

  510. than the

  511. cost of

  512. speaking about

  513. Jesus.

  514. This might

  515. sound a bit

  516. brash, but

  517. in my mind

  518. this week as

  519. I was preparing,

  520. I just thought,

  521. well, it comes

  522. down to a very

  523. simple equation.

  524. who would I

  525. be prepared

  526. to take a

  527. beating for?

  528. I don't

  529. like pain,

  530. not at all,

  531. but that's the

  532. equation,

  533. potentially.

  534. Anyway, let's

  535. move on.

  536. So a big,

  537. a strong gospel

  538. will most

  539. likely bring

  540. strong opposition,

  541. and a big

  542. gospel with

  543. strong opposition

  544. needs a big

  545. response.

  546. continue the

  547. story, verse

  548. 24.

  549. Once released,

  550. Peter and

  551. John waste

  552. no time

  553. getting back

  554. to the

  555. other

  556. believers

  557. to bring

  558. some

  559. potentially

  560. disconcerting

  561. news of

  562. the new

  563. normal for

  564. them as

  565. Christians,

  566. a new

  567. normal which

  568. is starting

  569. to look

  570. dark with

  571. violent

  572. opposition.

  573. situation.

  574. Now, if

  575. Peter and

  576. John come

  577. into the

  578. room that

  579. we were in

  580. here today,

  581. and they

  582. said,

  583. well, look,

  584. okay, here,

  585. this is what's

  586. going to go

  587. down in the

  588. next few

  589. days and

  590. weeks.

  591. Be prepared,

  592. everybody.

  593. These guys are

  594. threatening serious

  595. violence.

  596. How would we

  597. respond to

  598. Peter and

  599. John?

  600. Well, I

  601. think we

  602. might be

  603. tempted to

  604. say, Peter

  605. and John,

  606. just come in

  607. here, sit

  608. down there,

  609. pick your

  610. head down

  611. and be

  612. quiet.

  613. Don't stir

  614. the possum

  615. anymore.

  616. Perhaps we

  617. need to get

  618. our best PR

  619. people on the

  620. job, and

  621. let's try and

  622. rebuild this

  623. relationship with

  624. the Jewish

  625. political and

  626. religious

  627. authorities.

  628. Let's get

  629. them to see

  630. that we're

  631. not all

  632. hotheads,

  633. that we're

  634. not going to

  635. make life

  636. miserable for

  637. them.

  638. Now, that's

  639. not what

  640. happens.

  641. We're told

  642. very simply,

  643. the believers

  644. just go to

  645. prayer.

  646. They go to

  647. prayer.

  648. Big

  649. opposition,

  650. big response.

  651. Verse 25

  652. and 26,

  653. big response,

  654. let's pray

  655. to our

  656. big God.

  657. sovereign

  658. Lord.

  659. Do you

  660. hear it?

  661. Sovereign

  662. Lord.

  663. How comforting

  664. is that to

  665. say when

  666. you're under

  667. the shadow

  668. or the

  669. umbrella of

  670. a potential

  671. beating,

  672. potential

  673. powerful guys

  674. who seem

  675. to be out

  676. of control.

  677. Sovereign

  678. Lord who

  679. made the

  680. heaven and

  681. the earth

  682. and the

  683. sea and

  684. everything in

  685. them.

  686. God is

  687. in the

  688. world.

  689. That's a

  690. powerful God.

  691. That's a God

  692. who's in

  693. charge of

  694. every single

  695. moment and

  696. part of his

  697. universe.

  698. God is.

  699. And so

  700. the big

  701. response is

  702. that they

  703. remind

  704. themselves

  705. of just

  706. how big

  707. God is.

  708. They remind

  709. themselves

  710. that what

  711. they're part

  712. of here

  713. is God's

  714. salvation

  715. history,

  716. God's

  717. salvation

  718. pathway.

  719. It was

  720. God's

  721. cause

  722. that they

  723. were witnesses

  724. to.

  725. it was

  726. the died

  727. for people

  728. of the

  729. unstoppable

  730. Jesus who

  731. were being

  732. opposed and

  733. threatened.

  734. The ones

  735. that the

  736. Lord has

  737. said all

  738. eternity

  739. was shaped

  740. to save

  741. and having

  742. been saved

  743. would never

  744. be lost,

  745. not one

  746. of them.

  747. They

  748. remind

  749. themselves

  750. that God

  751. was not

  752. threatened by

  753. the wicked

  754. threats of

  755. evil people.

  756. He

  757. quoted from

  758. Psalm 2

  759. there.

  760. And that

  761. God would

  762. deal with

  763. opposition to

  764. his cause

  765. and his

  766. people as

  767. he has

  768. always done.

  769. What has

  770. God done,

  771. Psalm 2?

  772. Well,

  773. God sits

  774. enthroned in

  775. heaven and

  776. he just has

  777. a bit of a

  778. cackle.

  779. Is that the

  780. best you got?

  781. Even more

  782. than that,

  783. Peter's

  784. confident that

  785. as with the

  786. death of

  787. Christ,

  788. the wickedness

  789. of these

  790. people will

  791. actually just

  792. become part

  793. of God's

  794. overarching

  795. plan.

  796. And so

  797. rather than

  798. stop or

  799. derail God's

  800. plan,

  801. we'll actually

  802. serve to

  803. fulfill God's

  804. plan.

  805. Now that's

  806. sovereignty,

  807. isn't it?

  808. That our

  809. worst intentions

  810. is simply

  811. just picked

  812. up by the

  813. Lord and

  814. used for

  815. good.

  816. And they

  817. reminded

  818. themselves,

  819. verse 27 and

  820. 28,

  821. that that's

  822. exactly what

  823. happened with

  824. Jesus.

  825. So,

  826. friends,

  827. do you see

  828. the point

  829. of their

  830. prayer?

  831. They're

  832. reminding

  833. themselves

  834. that

  835. opposition,

  836. whatever

  837. shape or

  838. form or

  839. severity it

  840. took,

  841. opposition

  842. did not

  843. mean the

  844. unstoppable

  845. Jesus

  846. suddenly was

  847. stopped.

  848. But

  849. opposition

  850. does not

  851. mean the

  852. unstoppable

  853. Jesus is

  854. somehow or

  855. other

  856. unexpectedly

  857. defeated in

  858. his task of

  859. gathering his

  860. died for

  861. people.

  862. In fact,

  863. they're reminding

  864. themselves that

  865. opposition has

  866. always been the

  867. trademark

  868. response of

  869. rebels,

  870. especially to

  871. God's servant,

  872. Sam 2.

  873. what else

  874. might we have

  875. expected is

  876. really what

  877. they're saying

  878. as they pray.

  879. And so

  880. filling their

  881. hearts and

  882. minds with

  883. that truth

  884. squeezes out

  885. any developing

  886. panic and

  887. enables them to

  888. continue to have

  889. a quiet trust

  890. and confidence

  891. in God's

  892. care of

  893. them.

  894. And even

  895. more than

  896. that, as

  897. we'll see in

  898. just a

  899. second, it

  900. actually gives

  901. them boldness

  902. as they face a

  903. potentially awful

  904. future.

  905. And so

  906. verse 29, 31,

  907. they actually

  908. ask that.

  909. They ask God

  910. for boldness to

  911. keep on keeping

  912. on being

  913. witnesses, to

  914. keep on keeping

  915. on speaking the

  916. gospel of

  917. Jesus.

  918. and now

  919. Lord,

  920. this is the

  921. bit when we

  922. go to our

  923. prayers and

  924. we say,

  925. Lord, this is

  926. what we need,

  927. this is what we

  928. want.

  929. This is the

  930. supermarket aisle

  931. of the prayer

  932. list.

  933. And now

  934. Lord,

  935. remember the

  936. context?

  937. And now

  938. Lord,

  939. look upon

  940. their threats

  941. and grant

  942. to your

  943. servants to

  944. continue to

  945. speak your

  946. word with all

  947. boldness.

  948. What a

  949. prayer.

  950. They pray

  951. to be

  952. faithful

  953. witnesses.

  954. As God

  955. wants them

  956. to be,

  957. and clearly

  958. as they

  959. want to

  960. be.

  961. And most

  962. amazingly,

  963. they pray

  964. this,

  965. knowing

  966. the

  967. likelihood

  968. that this

  969. prayer

  970. would bring

  971. them more

  972. opposition

  973. and very

  974. likely

  975. physical

  976. harm.

  977. And that's

  978. exactly what

  979. we'll see

  980. as the

  981. story unfolds

  982. next week.

  983. What a

  984. prayer.

  985. Pray it

  986. in the

  987. context and

  988. under the

  989. lordship of

  990. the unstoppable

  991. Jesus.

  992. In the

  993. power of

  994. the secret

  995. weapon of

  996. witnesses,

  997. the

  998. Holy Spirit.

  999. And not

  1000. only that,

  1001. they keep

  1002. on praying,

  1003. and they

  1004. pray for

  1005. the unstoppable

  1006. Jesus to

  1007. continue

  1008. demonstrating his

  1009. power among

  1010. unbelievers.

  1011. So they're

  1012. praying for

  1013. that,

  1014. that they

  1015. might be

  1016. faithful

  1017. witnesses,

  1018. while you

  1019. stretch out

  1020. your hand

  1021. to heal

  1022. and signs

  1023. and wonders

  1024. are performed

  1025. through the

  1026. name of

  1027. your holy

  1028. servant

  1029. Jesus.

  1030. Do you get

  1031. what they're

  1032. praying there?

  1033. the very

  1034. thing,

  1035. the healing

  1036. of this

  1037. profoundly

  1038. disabled man

  1039. and other

  1040. miraculous things,

  1041. the coming of

  1042. the spirit

  1043. and other

  1044. things,

  1045. the very

  1046. thing that

  1047. stirred up

  1048. these Jewish

  1049. religious

  1050. authorities to

  1051. see the

  1052. hand of

  1053. Jesus,

  1054. the fingerprint

  1055. of Jesus

  1056. back among

  1057. them when

  1058. they thought

  1059. they were

  1060. rid of him,

  1061. they're

  1062. praying for

  1063. more of

  1064. that.

  1065. Why?

  1066. Because that's

  1067. the thing

  1068. that's swept

  1069. to this

  1070. point in

  1071. time with

  1072. the interpretation

  1073. of the

  1074. focus on to

  1075. Jesus,

  1076. that's the

  1077. thing that's

  1078. swept more

  1079. than 5,000

  1080. people into

  1081. a fresh start

  1082. with Jesus.

  1083. And they

  1084. want that.

  1085. And they're

  1086. willing to

  1087. pay the

  1088. price for

  1089. that.

  1090. And they're

  1091. willing to

  1092. they know

  1093. full well the

  1094. consequences of

  1095. their prayer,

  1096. suffering and

  1097. pain for them

  1098. personally,

  1099. but forgiveness

  1100. and a fresh

  1101. start in a new

  1102. relationship with

  1103. God for

  1104. countless

  1105. thousands of

  1106. needy people.

  1107. Again,

  1108. as they saw

  1109. it,

  1110. a fresh start

  1111. for countless

  1112. more thousands

  1113. of people.

  1114. is well worth

  1115. the cost

  1116. they might

  1117. have to

  1118. pay.

  1119. My parents,

  1120. I got one

  1121. brother who's

  1122. not a believer,

  1123. and I could

  1124. never understand

  1125. why my parents

  1126. said,

  1127. until I became

  1128. a parent myself,

  1129. I could never

  1130. understand why

  1131. my mom and

  1132. dad said it was

  1133. so hard to

  1134. pray for my

  1135. brother.

  1136. and the

  1137. prayer had to

  1138. go along

  1139. these lines.

  1140. He was

  1141. married,

  1142. a lovely,

  1143. still is

  1144. married,

  1145. lovely wife,

  1146. three beautiful

  1147. girls,

  1148. very successful

  1149. businessmen.

  1150. Mom and dad

  1151. had to work out

  1152. if they were

  1153. prepared to

  1154. pray the

  1155. prayer that

  1156. said,

  1157. Lord,

  1158. do whatever

  1159. you need to

  1160. do in this

  1161. man's life

  1162. to get his

  1163. attention and

  1164. bring him to

  1165. repentance.

  1166. I'm a dad

  1167. of four kids,

  1168. twelve grandkids.

  1169. I'm finding the

  1170. same difficulty

  1171. praying the

  1172. same prayer.

  1173. What will it

  1174. mean?

  1175. What will it

  1176. mean for me

  1177. if the Lord

  1178. uses me as

  1179. the model of

  1180. sweeping my

  1181. children into

  1182. the kingdom,

  1183. and I believe

  1184. most of them

  1185. already are in

  1186. the kingdom,

  1187. thankfully?

  1188. what might

  1189. that mean to

  1190. see them

  1191. mature and

  1192. grow in

  1193. Christ?

  1194. Am I

  1195. prepared to

  1196. be the

  1197. model,

  1198. the model

  1199. of handling

  1200. illness,

  1201. or rejection,

  1202. or whatever

  1203. that model

  1204. might be?

  1205. Big prayers,

  1206. big responses

  1207. to the

  1208. gospel.

  1209. So my

  1210. friends,

  1211. hopefully that

  1212. personal thing

  1213. didn't clatter

  1214. what I've been

  1215. saying this

  1216. morning,

  1217. but question

  1218. now to you,

  1219. do you expect

  1220. and accept

  1221. opposition

  1222. and persecution

  1223. and real

  1224. loss when you

  1225. speak the

  1226. gospel of

  1227. Jesus?

  1228. To family,

  1229. friends,

  1230. workmates,

  1231. neighbours,

  1232. whoever?

  1233. Or do you

  1234. simply conclude

  1235. that opposition

  1236. really shows

  1237. that the

  1238. so-called

  1239. unstoppable

  1240. Jesus is

  1241. actually really

  1242. quite easily

  1243. stopped in

  1244. real life?

  1245. How sad

  1246. is it when

  1247. the first

  1248. response of

  1249. Christians to

  1250. opposition is

  1251. to lose

  1252. confidence in

  1253. the message of

  1254. salvation in

  1255. Jesus?

  1256. Jesus?

  1257. We need to,

  1258. we forget

  1259. rather,

  1260. we forget

  1261. that so

  1262. often people

  1263. don't oppose

  1264. God's pathway

  1265. to salvation

  1266. in Jesus

  1267. because it's

  1268. stupid or

  1269. there's a

  1270. lack of

  1271. evidence for

  1272. it.

  1273. They oppose

  1274. it because

  1275. they don't

  1276. want to go

  1277. to Jesus.

  1278. They don't

  1279. want to give

  1280. up their

  1281. autonomy.

  1282. they don't

  1283. want to

  1284. admit they're

  1285. not good

  1286. people.

  1287. They don't

  1288. want to

  1289. admit that

  1290. of themselves

  1291. they can't

  1292. earn heaven

  1293. and acceptance

  1294. before God

  1295. and they'll

  1296. stick at it

  1297. in their

  1298. defiance.

  1299. And so my

  1300. friends,

  1301. we need to

  1302. remember that

  1303. often times

  1304. opposition is

  1305. evidence that

  1306. the gospel is

  1307. getting under

  1308. the skin of

  1309. people.

  1310. Or perhaps

  1311. you're already

  1312. defeated when

  1313. you speak the

  1314. gospel of

  1315. Jesus to

  1316. your friends

  1317. and family

  1318. because your

  1319. horizon is

  1320. dominated by

  1321. the power of

  1322. those who are

  1323. opposing you.

  1324. Social media,

  1325. absolutely cruel.

  1326. People just

  1327. lash out and

  1328. tear you to

  1329. shreds if you

  1330. dare to say

  1331. anything against

  1332. the sort of

  1333. normal accepted

  1334. culture.

  1335. But if we

  1336. focus on that

  1337. horizon then we

  1338. will be

  1339. defeated.

  1340. But there's a

  1341. horizon behind

  1342. that horizon

  1343. which is the

  1344. sovereign Lord.

  1345. And yes,

  1346. the sovereign

  1347. Lord will use

  1348. social media.

  1349. This is a

  1350. really hard one

  1351. for me but

  1352. even the Lord

  1353. will use social

  1354. media for

  1355. good.

  1356. And probably

  1357. he's the only

  1358. one who can

  1359. use it for

  1360. good but I

  1361. won't start my

  1362. normal rant

  1363. about social

  1364. media.

  1365. Or perhaps

  1366. you're just

  1367. immobilized by

  1368. fear.

  1369. Fear of

  1370. verbal attack.

  1371. You just

  1372. find that you

  1373. can't cope with

  1374. the notion of

  1375. being dismissed

  1376. as a hate

  1377. speaker or a

  1378. lunatic.

  1379. Fear of

  1380. physical and

  1381. emotional loss.

  1382. Loss of

  1383. friendships.

  1384. Loss of

  1385. other relationships.

  1386. Loss of

  1387. career promotion.

  1388. Sometimes we

  1389. think that when

  1390. we become a

  1391. Christian that

  1392. that means our

  1393. career will be

  1394. onwards upwards.

  1395. Oftentimes it's

  1396. the opposite.

  1397. Oftentimes we

  1398. lose out on

  1399. promotion.

  1400. because we're

  1401. Christians.

  1402. And so on and

  1403. so forth.

  1404. Loss of a

  1405. hassle-free

  1406. life.

  1407. Loss of

  1408. ease and

  1409. comfort.

  1410. Fear will

  1411. immobilize us.

  1412. We need a

  1413. big prayer.

  1414. We need lots

  1415. of confidence

  1416. in God's

  1417. Holy Spirit

  1418. and confidence

  1419. in the

  1420. unstoppable

  1421. Jesus.

  1422. So the

  1423. question comes

  1424. down to this

  1425. and I'm

  1426. finishing on

  1427. this.

  1428. I'm sorry

  1429. I've gone

  1430. over time

  1431. this morning

  1432. but the

  1433. question is

  1434. this.

  1435. How much

  1436. has prayer

  1437. been part

  1438. of your

  1439. planning

  1440. to speak

  1441. the gospel

  1442. in the

  1443. past weeks

  1444. and months?

  1445. There's two

  1446. assumptions in

  1447. there.

  1448. One that you

  1449. have been

  1450. speaking the

  1451. gospel where

  1452. you've had

  1453. opportunity to

  1454. you've been

  1455. doing so in

  1456. the context

  1457. of prayer.

  1458. prayer.

  1459. Are you

  1460. daily spreading

  1461. out your

  1462. helplessness

  1463. before the

  1464. Lord in

  1465. prayer?

  1466. Looking to

  1467. his power

  1468. to effect

  1469. change in

  1470. those to

  1471. whom you're

  1472. speaking?

  1473. Is it

  1474. something that

  1475. you say is

  1476. important and

  1477. uniting for us

  1478. as a church

  1479. family?

  1480. We want to

  1481. impact our

  1482. community with

  1483. the gospel of

  1484. Jesus.

  1485. We want to

  1486. see people

  1487. saved.

  1488. But are

  1489. we praying?

  1490. One for

  1491. confidence to

  1492. speak and

  1493. two that the

  1494. Lord might

  1495. sovereignly

  1496. change stubborn

  1497. hard-hearted

  1498. lives,

  1499. rebellious

  1500. lives,

  1501. angry lives.

  1502. If not,

  1503. if we're not

  1504. praying then

  1505. most likely

  1506. we will be

  1507. carrying the

  1508. burden of

  1509. success as

  1510. witnesses

  1511. on our

  1512. own shoulders.

  1513. And my

  1514. friend, I

  1515. tell you, I've

  1516. learned, I've

  1517. learned really

  1518. painfully over

  1519. the years,

  1520. that's a

  1521. burden you

  1522. can't bear.

  1523. And let me

  1524. also say I've

  1525. learned it's a

  1526. burden you

  1527. don't need to

  1528. bear.

  1529. So let's

  1530. pray.

  1531. Lord, too

  1532. often prayer is

  1533. our last

  1534. resort.

  1535. Lord, may

  1536. our

  1537. Lord, may

  1538. our

  1539. Lord, may

  1540. our

  1541. Lord, may

  1542. our

  1543. horizon be

  1544. filled with

  1545. you and

  1546. your

  1547. sovereignty

  1548. and the

  1549. unstoppable

  1550. Jesus and

  1551. the power

  1552. of your

  1553. spirit to

  1554. change people

  1555. from the

  1556. inside out.

  1557. And help us

  1558. then, Lord,

  1559. just to be

  1560. happy to do

  1561. the part that

  1562. you've asked

  1563. us to do,

  1564. and that is

  1565. simply to speak

  1566. the message

  1567. of Jesus.

  1568. Help us to

  1569. hear this this

  1570. morning, Lord,

  1571. and change our

  1572. hearts, warmer

  1573. hearts.

  1574. In Jesus' name I

  1575. pray.

  1576. Amen.

  1577. Amen.

  1578. Amen.

  1579. Amen.

  1580. Amen.

  1581. Amen.

  1582. Amen.

  1583. Amen.

  1584. Amen.

  1585. Amen.

  1586. Amen.

  1587. Amen.

  1588. Amen.

  1589. Amen.

  1590. Amen.

  1591. Amen.

  1592. Amen.
