  1. We're reading from Acts chapter 4 and verse 32.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  2. Last week, David spoke about a great threat, but that we've got an even greater God.

  3. Peter and John were being threatened not to speak in the name of Jesus, but they said,

  4. how can we not? How can we not speak in that name?

  5. And they returned to their friends, and they prayed for boldness,

  6. and they're all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they continue to speak the word of God.

  7. So now we're going to carry on from verse 32 and through to chapter 5, verse 11.

  8. Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul,

  9. and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own,

  10. but they had everything in common.

  11. And with great power, the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus,

  12. and great grace was upon them all.

  13. There was not a needy person among them,

  14. for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them,

  15. and brought the proceeds of what was sold,

  16. and laid it at the apostles' feet,

  17. and it was distributed to each as any had need.

  18. Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas,

  19. which means son of encouragement,

  20. a Levite, a native of Cyprus,

  21. sold a field that belonged to him,

  22. and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet.

  23. But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira,

  24. sold a piece of property,

  25. and with his wife's knowledge,

  26. he kept back for himself some of the proceeds,

  27. and brought only a part of it,

  28. and laid it at the apostles' feet.

  29. But Peter said,

  30. Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart

  31. to lie to the Holy Spirit

  32. and keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land?

  33. While it remained unsold,

  34. did it not remain your own?

  35. And after it was sold,

  36. was it not at your disposal?

  37. Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart?

  38. You have not lied to man, but to God.

  39. When Ananias heard these words,

  40. he fell down and breathed his last,

  41. and great fear came upon all who heard of it.

  42. The young men rose and wrapped him up

  43. and carried him out and buried him.

  44. After an interval of about three hours,

  45. his wife came in,

  46. not knowing what had happened.

  47. And Peter said to her,

  48. Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.

  49. And she said,

  50. Yes, for so much.

  51. But Peter said to her,

  52. How is it that you have agreed together

  53. to test the Spirit of the Lord?

  54. Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband

  55. are at the door,

  56. and they will carry you out.

  57. Immediately she fell down at his feet

  58. and breathed her last.

  59. When the young men came in,

  60. they found her dead,

  61. and they carried her out

  62. and buried her beside her husband.

  63. And great fear came upon the whole church

  64. and upon all who heard of these things.

  65. Wouldn't it be great to be back

  66. in the early days of the New Testament church?

  67. If I had $10 for every time I've heard that

  68. over my ministry years,

  69. I would be well away.

  70. It's a reasonably common expression for Christians.

  71. And almost always,

  72. it's a response by Christians

  73. to the many exciting things

  74. happening in the early church.

  75. Oftentimes, Christians are actually reading

  76. the Acts of the Apostles.

  77. when they have these sort of thoughts,

  78. as Matt suggested in his introduction.

  79. And why wouldn't they have?

  80. There's the spectacular arrival of the Holy Spirit,

  81. the secret weapon that Jesus promised

  82. to enable them to be good witnesses.

  83. There's the Spirit's enabling of Peter and John,

  84. men who only weeks earlier

  85. had been cowering in the darkness.

  86. Now we're taking on a hostile crowd,

  87. speaking the gospel of Jesus

  88. with new understanding,

  89. new clarity,

  90. and new confidence.

  91. And then there's the radical renewal of,

  92. we're told here,

  93. more than 5,000 people have been converted

  94. in what we presume

  95. is just a short number of weeks.

  96. Converted through hearing the name of Jesus.

  97. And not only converted,

  98. but a radical new community has emerged.

  99. The community itself

  100. is a witness

  101. to the unstoppable Jesus,

  102. both as it clearly shaped,

  103. as it was clearly shaped

  104. and defined by Jesus' word,

  105. an example,

  106. and also a witness

  107. as individuals within it

  108. spoke the gospel of Jesus

  109. to those around them.

  110. So much excitement,

  111. so much positivity,

  112. that not even opposition

  113. and threat of violence

  114. could stop the excitement.

  115. As we saw last week,

  116. with fresh enabling,

  117. fresh confidence from the Holy Spirit,

  118. chapter 4, verse 31,

  119. they continued.

  120. In the face of threat,

  121. in the face of personal threat of violence,

  122. they continued to speak the name of Jesus.

  123. Now all of that is exciting,

  124. excitement plus,

  125. all of it combines

  126. as indisputable evidence

  127. of the unstoppable Jesus

  128. building his spiritual empire

  129. as he gathers his died-for people

  130. from the four corners of the earth.

  131. All of that clarifies

  132. what we can expect

  133. when we speak the name of Jesus,

  134. speak the gospel of Jesus.

  135. We can expect people

  136. to be radically renewed

  137. from the inside out.

  138. We can expect to see

  139. Christ's radical new community,

  140. the church,

  141. grow and be an important confirmation

  142. of the changing power of the gospel.

  143. And we can expect opposition and attack.

  144. This morning,

  145. I want to just take us into

  146. what Luke presents us here

  147. as a different perspective on attack.

  148. So let's jump into the story

  149. as Luke describes

  150. the demonstrated reality

  151. of the early Christian community.

  152. And if you're a visitor,

  153. that outline of what I'm speaking to

  154. is on the back of the bulletin thing

  155. you got when you came in the door this morning.

  156. The demonstrated reality

  157. of the early Christian community.

  158. authenticity

  159. and what the church could

  160. and ought to be.

  161. Now, the description we have

  162. in verse 32 onwards

  163. reinforces the description

  164. we have already been through

  165. in chapter 2,

  166. verses 42 through to 47.

  167. And what we saw there

  168. and see here

  169. is that the gospel changes

  170. whole communities

  171. radically.

  172. and the point here

  173. is that I think

  174. that this new gospel community

  175. is the most attractive

  176. in the very points

  177. where our culture

  178. is most ugly.

  179. Verse 32.

  180. A community

  181. that's now in excess

  182. of 5,000,

  183. in spite of that,

  184. they were noted

  185. for their single-minded

  186. all-in commitment.

  187. United in heart and soul.

  188. It sounds so attractive to us

  189. in our fractured,

  190. disconnected world,

  191. doesn't it?

  192. All-in commitment to Jesus.

  193. All-in commitment to one another.

  194. All-in commitment to expressing

  195. the mind of Christ

  196. in everyday living.

  197. All-in commitment

  198. to speaking the gospel of Jesus

  199. to those around them

  200. in their community

  201. as they had opportunity.

  202. And there's demonstrated reality

  203. as they're demonstrably moved

  204. from the attitude

  205. of self-protection

  206. and possessiveness,

  207. which sort of marks out

  208. our culture, doesn't it?

  209. When they're moved from that

  210. to the kingdom attitude

  211. of self-sacrificing generosity.

  212. And it's most clearly seen

  213. and exampleed here

  214. in terms of

  215. how they think

  216. about their material possessions.

  217. They're converting

  218. their assets into cash

  219. and bringing them

  220. for the work of the gospel.

  221. Why?

  222. Well, I think it's very simple.

  223. Since their immediate happiness,

  224. since their future security

  225. is no longer tied

  226. to their own efforts

  227. to accumulate things,

  228. wealth and possession,

  229. since it's no longer that,

  230. but God's grace,

  231. then suddenly they've experienced

  232. a new freedom

  233. in respect to those things

  234. they had accumulated.

  235. a new desire

  236. to cash in their assets

  237. and use the money

  238. to be as Christ

  239. to others.

  240. Now we need to just

  241. pause on note here.

  242. There's absolutely

  243. no suggestion

  244. in these verses

  245. of some sort of mandate,

  246. some sort of requirement.

  247. If you're going to be a Christian,

  248. then you have to sell

  249. private property.

  250. Nothing like that at all.

  251. What's on display here,

  252. I think,

  253. is the changing power

  254. of the gospel.

  255. As Christians

  256. increasingly express

  257. the mind of Christ,

  258. then they're no longer

  259. expressing that basic

  260. human attitude

  261. of possessiveness,

  262. self-interest,

  263. my, me, mine.

  264. And verse 33,

  265. look at the consequence,

  266. look at the immediate

  267. result of that.

  268. And with great power,

  269. the apostles were giving

  270. their testimony

  271. to the resurrection

  272. of the Lord Jesus

  273. and great grace

  274. was upon them all.

  275. Now there's various ways

  276. you can interpret that verse.

  277. I think it's a very

  278. practical thing just.

  279. I think it's this,

  280. that as the watching world,

  281. their local community

  282. looked into this new

  283. emerging radical community,

  284. they saw such a matchup

  285. between their words

  286. and their actions

  287. that this community

  288. became an even more

  289. compelling witness

  290. to the new freedom,

  291. the new security

  292. that we find in Christ.

  293. It was powerful

  294. and compelling.

  295. As a unit,

  296. as a church group,

  297. they demonstrated

  298. the power of Jesus,

  299. the power of God's grace

  300. to renew

  301. and free

  302. and equip

  303. in life.

  304. I think it's hard

  305. to imagine

  306. a more radical community,

  307. isn't it?

  308. It's hard to imagine

  309. a more compelling witness

  310. to the changing power

  311. of the gospel,

  312. isn't it?

  313. So,

  314. here we need to prop

  315. and go back

  316. to my opening sentence.

  317. And our

  318. time-to-time

  319. expression

  320. of longing

  321. to be part

  322. of the early church

  323. in its unity

  324. and its excitement

  325. and its compelling

  326. testimony

  327. to the watching world.

  328. So,

  329. here's what

  330. I'm going to suggest

  331. to you,

  332. that sometimes

  333. I think

  334. that idea

  335. is more romantic

  336. than real force.

  337. are you really

  338. longing

  339. to be part

  340. of a community

  341. where there's

  342. such single-minded,

  343. all-in-commitment,

  344. demonstrated reality

  345. of the changing

  346. power of the gospel?

  347. If that's something

  348. you say

  349. you really

  350. are longing

  351. for,

  352. then the question

  353. becomes for us

  354. here today,

  355. why are we so far

  356. removed from that

  357. picture?

  358. Why are we so far

  359. away from the

  360. attitudes

  361. that shaped

  362. the early church?

  363. And then again,

  364. the question

  365. becomes,

  366. well,

  367. if we're really

  368. craving that,

  369. why aren't we

  370. free to do it

  371. today?

  372. What's stopping

  373. us from striving

  374. through all-in

  375. commitment

  376. for an identical

  377. community here

  378. in GECN?

  379. Friends,

  380. I think we

  381. get found out

  382. here,

  383. at least I

  384. get found out

  385. here anyway.

  386. You might be

  387. different from me.

  388. I think the

  389. truth for most

  390. of us is

  391. that we crave

  392. a community

  393. shaped by

  394. self-sacrificing

  395. generosity.

  396. We crave a

  397. community shaped

  398. by care of

  399. one another,

  400. deep care.

  401. We crave

  402. that so much

  403. but personally,

  404. we want to

  405. continue and

  406. do insist on

  407. continuing to

  408. be self-protective,

  409. possessive.

  410. We crave this

  411. but we find

  412. ourselves unable

  413. to find sufficient

  414. security and

  415. delight and

  416. happiness and

  417. hope in

  418. Jesus that

  419. actually allows

  420. us to be set

  421. free from our

  422. possessions.

  423. That sort of

  424. overflows in

  425. an attitude of

  426. generosity and

  427. all-in commitment

  428. that quite

  429. literally would

  430. transform us

  431. individually and

  432. as a church

  433. community.

  434. Okay.

  435. Okay.

  436. See,

  437. corporate change

  438. as we look

  439. around this

  440. church and

  441. wish it was

  442. different and

  443. we all do

  444. that.

  445. I hear it all

  446. the time and

  447. I express the

  448. same thoughts

  449. myself.

  450. We wish it

  451. was different

  452. at so many

  453. points.

  454. We need to

  455. be saying to

  456. ourselves that

  457. corporate change

  458. starts

  459. individually.

  460. As I have

  461. those attitudes,

  462. as you have

  463. those attitudes,

  464. then we will

  465. have those

  466. attitudes.

  467. Well, let's

  468. move ahead in

  469. the story.

  470. We confront

  471. Satan's clever

  472. ambush and he

  473. effectively destroys

  474. their unity and

  475. credibility.

  476. And this part of

  477. the story shows

  478. that duplicity now

  479. undermines

  480. authenticity and

  481. eventually trumps

  482. authenticity in

  483. this radical new

  484. community.

  485. Now, they've

  486. already experienced

  487. external attack

  488. through the

  489. threats of the

  490. Jewish religious

  491. leaders.

  492. That of itself

  493. only made them

  494. more bold to

  495. speak about

  496. Jesus.

  497. Now the story

  498. changes and for

  499. the first time in

  500. the Acts of the

  501. Apostles, Satan

  502. is identified by

  503. name.

  504. I think that

  505. tells us that

  506. for Luke, this

  507. is a very

  508. significant moment

  509. in the story of

  510. the early church

  511. in the way he

  512. brings this out.

  513. Satan's strategy,

  514. and we can look

  515. back through the

  516. Gospels and see

  517. Jesus teaching this,

  518. Satan's strategy

  519. very simply is to

  520. hurt the cause of

  521. Jesus.

  522. It can't actually

  523. hurt Jesus, so his

  524. fallback position is

  525. then to hurt the

  526. cause of Jesus by

  527. silencing any

  528. credible witness to

  529. his name by his

  530. followers.

  531. Silencing any

  532. credible witness from

  533. the church in the

  534. local community.

  535. And so I think

  536. what Luke is

  537. telling us here in

  538. this story is at

  539. two levels.

  540. There's the

  541. immediate cause, the

  542. human cause.

  543. We've got Ananias and

  544. Sapphira and the way

  545. this plays out in

  546. front of the

  547. apostles.

  548. But there's a cause

  549. behind the cause.

  550. And that is Satan

  551. working to discredit

  552. and undermine the

  553. witness of this

  554. radical community in

  555. a way that external

  556. threats have not been

  557. able to achieve thus

  558. far.

  559. He works, Satan

  560. works from inside the

  561. church.

  562. church.

  563. And here we have

  564. it.

  565. Satan uses a nice,

  566. well-to-do husband

  567. and wife team in

  568. this local community

  569. to do what external

  570. threats fail to do.

  571. Ultimately, to destroy

  572. their unity and to

  573. threaten their

  574. credibility in the

  575. local community.

  576. Now, again, these are

  577. difficult verses to

  578. understand and some

  579. people have gone into

  580. really black places

  581. with this.

  582. But I need to just

  583. pull us back and say

  584. this story is not

  585. about people who are

  586. not truly converted

  587. being part of the

  588. church.

  589. There's a reality to

  590. that.

  591. But that's not what

  592. this story is about,

  593. I believe.

  594. Nor is it about

  595. Christians losing

  596. their salvation because

  597. they have failed in

  598. their practical

  599. discipleship.

  600. and because they've

  601. committed a particular

  602. sin.

  603. I don't think it's

  604. about either of these

  605. things.

  606. And one of the

  607. reasons why I think

  608. that is because Peter

  609. actually addresses

  610. Ananias and Sapphira

  611. as Christians, as

  612. people who have the

  613. spirit.

  614. So I think the point

  615. of the story is this.

  616. The point of the story

  617. is to show the

  618. struggle it is to

  619. maintain demonstrated

  620. reality in the

  621. church against

  622. Satan's strategy to

  623. compromise and

  624. discredit their

  625. testimony.

  626. So let's see how

  627. the story falls out

  628. in that context.

  629. Peter, I think, is

  630. really saying to

  631. Ananias when he

  632. confronts him here,

  633. Ananias, why have

  634. you given a

  635. foothold to Satan

  636. in your life?

  637. That is, why have

  638. you allowed yourself

  639. to be manipulated

  640. into given expression

  641. to the mind of

  642. Satan?

  643. That is, the mind

  644. of lies, deceit, and

  645. greed, rather than

  646. expressing the mind

  647. of the spirit, the

  648. mind of Christ.

  649. The mind of Christ

  650. through the Holy

  651. Spirit, which is

  652. truth, authenticity,

  653. and generosity.

  654. There's the divide.

  655. At face value, the

  656. seriousness of their

  657. action was in going

  658. for appearance without

  659. reality.

  660. And so the story

  661. falls out.

  662. Barnabas is

  663. mentioned in the end

  664. of chapter 4 as

  665. just an example, a

  666. worked example of

  667. this incredible

  668. generosity.

  669. He sells a property,

  670. brings all the money,

  671. and lays it down at the

  672. feet of the apostles.

  673. So use it however you

  674. want.

  675. Ananias and

  676. Sapphira looking on

  677. from the side

  678. thinking, hey, we

  679. could do that.

  680. We like the way

  681. Barnabas has been

  682. considered in the

  683. church.

  684. And so, like others

  685. in the church, they

  686. decided to sell a

  687. piece of property.

  688. And they go public

  689. saying, well, look,

  690. okay, we're selling a

  691. piece of property, we

  692. want everybody to know

  693. that.

  694. And leading the

  695. brethren to believe

  696. that they too would

  697. bring all the proceeds

  698. of that property and

  699. make it available for

  700. gospel work.

  701. But unlike others,

  702. Ananias and

  703. Sapphira made an

  704. agreement between

  705. themselves that they

  706. would go public

  707. inferring one thing

  708. but secretly keep

  709. some of the money

  710. for themselves.

  711. And I think it was a

  712. scheme that was

  713. designed to make them

  714. appear generous, to

  715. make them appear

  716. concerned for the

  717. care of others

  718. and the needs of

  719. others without

  720. actually being so

  721. in reality.

  722. Appearing one thing

  723. while still being

  724. self-protective,

  725. self-possessive.

  726. They wanted a

  727. reputation for being

  728. ministry-minded while

  729. being, in fact,

  730. self-interested.

  731. In verse 3, Peter is

  732. really, really strong

  733. words for them.

  734. When it talks there

  735. about keeping back,

  736. the word really is

  737. embezzle.

  738. Why have you

  739. embezzled God's

  740. money?

  741. Why have you

  742. misappropriated?

  743. Why have you

  744. stolen?

  745. Strong language.

  746. How does that work?

  747. Well, I think it

  748. works like this.

  749. Secretly keeping

  750. money, they had

  751. publicly pledged or

  752. led people to believe

  753. they were giving to

  754. the Lord.

  755. It was already given

  756. to the Lord.

  757. Secretly keeping it

  758. then was tantamount

  759. to stealing it from

  760. God.

  761. Embezzlement.

  762. Now, I think the

  763. problem here is not

  764. simply selfishness or

  765. greed.

  766. In fact, it's not that

  767. really at all.

  768. Peter is very clear

  769. to them.

  770. They were entitled

  771. to keep whatever

  772. portion of the

  773. proceeds of the

  774. sale they wished.

  775. They could have

  776. sold their property

  777. and said, well,

  778. look, actually,

  779. we're actually

  780. committing to give

  781. 50% of it to the

  782. work of the

  783. gospel.

  784. And we're

  785. keeping 50%.

  786. Peter would have

  787. said, well, that

  788. would be fine.

  789. Of course you can

  790. do that.

  791. The sin was much

  792. more subtle.

  793. And it was in the

  794. issue of trying to

  795. create an impression

  796. about themselves that

  797. had little or no

  798. substance in reality.

  799. In other words,

  800. the problem here was

  801. not about money.

  802. the problem was

  803. about their

  804. relationship with

  805. God and their

  806. view of and

  807. treatment of God's

  808. church of which

  809. they were part.

  810. And in turn,

  811. this initial scheme

  812. becomes a slippery

  813. slope of compounding

  814. sin.

  815. Verse 8.

  816. We just see it.

  817. It just falls out.

  818. It gets a momentum.

  819. In an attempt to

  820. cover their tracks,

  821. Sapphira resorts to

  822. brazen public

  823. lies that were

  824. just spoken without

  825. regard for the

  826. impact of that on

  827. the testimony of

  828. the church.

  829. Now, the first

  830. part I opened up

  831. was just how

  832. exciting.

  833. This story,

  834. how sad.

  835. How sad.

  836. How sad that here

  837. in Christ's church,

  838. image and

  839. reputation is put

  840. above truth and

  841. integrity.

  842. How sad is it that

  843. a Christian couple

  844. could come to

  845. justify and

  846. deception and

  847. lies for the

  848. sake of reputation.

  849. an image.

  850. It's a very

  851. powerful,

  852. poignant moment

  853. in the life

  854. of the early

  855. church.

  856. Now, do you

  857. see Satan's

  858. strategy and

  859. where it was

  860. aimed?

  861. He couldn't

  862. care less about

  863. Ananias and

  864. Sapphira.

  865. What he could

  866. care about was

  867. destroying the

  868. credibility of

  869. this outstanding

  870. Christian community

  871. before the

  872. community.

  873. Destroying their

  874. oneness of

  875. mind and

  876. heart.

  877. You can

  878. imagine how

  879. that would

  880. have made

  881. others feel.

  882. Well, hey,

  883. we really

  884. were generous.

  885. We really did

  886. put our money

  887. down there,

  888. but now they're

  889. enjoying that

  890. new car,

  891. that big

  892. holiday.

  893. And we could

  894. have had that

  895. had we kept

  896. some money

  897. back.

  898. And so it

  899. actually erodes

  900. your initial

  901. generosity.

  902. Unless you're

  903. very careful

  904. about it.

  905. But that's

  906. human nature,

  907. isn't it?

  908. And it

  909. undermined their

  910. teaching about

  911. new security,

  912. new hope in

  913. Jesus, and new

  914. freedom from

  915. worldly possessions.

  916. And it had the

  917. effect of

  918. potentially, at

  919. least, making

  920. the Christians

  921. just look like

  922. others in

  923. their community

  924. saying one

  925. thing, but

  926. actually deep

  927. down really

  928. being committed

  929. to the power

  930. of money and

  931. what money

  932. can buy you.

  933. And they

  934. become, they

  935. lose their

  936. outstanding,

  937. powerful,

  938. winsome

  939. credibility, and

  940. they just become

  941. like unbelievers

  942. in their secret,

  943. grasping,

  944. self-centeredness.

  945. But there's

  946. more to come

  947. because we've

  948. got to consider

  949. God's severe

  950. response.

  951. There's no way

  952. to sugarcoat

  953. this.

  954. Each of

  955. these two

  956. drop dead.

  957. And I

  958. would suggest

  959. that the

  960. seriousness of

  961. their sin

  962. before the

  963. Lord is shown

  964. in the

  965. consequences.

  966. Now again,

  967. we've got to

  968. get this

  969. right in

  970. terms of

  971. what the

  972. story is

  973. pushing us

  974. to, otherwise

  975. there might

  976. be some

  977. here this

  978. morning who

  979. will spiral

  980. into terrible,

  981. terrible

  982. blackness.

  983. I think

  984. the story is

  985. telling us

  986. this, that

  987. the Lord

  988. removed these

  989. two from

  990. his church

  991. not because

  992. they were not

  993. Christians,

  994. but because

  995. their actions

  996. seriously

  997. threatened and

  998. tarnished his

  999. church.

  1000. Over the

  1001. years, Christians

  1002. have found

  1003. these verses

  1004. very hard to

  1005. handle.

  1006. Some have

  1007. suggested that

  1008. it was Peter

  1009. who, with

  1010. this new

  1011. spirit power at

  1012. his disposal,

  1013. just lost his

  1014. temper and

  1015. zapped these

  1016. two unfairly

  1017. and angrily.

  1018. sin.

  1019. But I think the

  1020. story at face

  1021. value is very

  1022. clear that Peter

  1023. had nothing to

  1024. do with it,

  1025. apart from

  1026. exposing the

  1027. sin, and

  1028. that God's

  1029. spirit was

  1030. the one who

  1031. acted in

  1032. this situation.

  1033. Which means

  1034. then that we're

  1035. left saying,

  1036. some people would

  1037. say, well, God

  1038. was very severe,

  1039. too severe.

  1040. But again, I

  1041. think the point

  1042. of this

  1043. incident is to

  1044. say through

  1045. the incident

  1046. that God is

  1047. screaming, I

  1048. hate sin and

  1049. duplicity in my

  1050. church.

  1051. Don't mess with

  1052. me in my

  1053. church.

  1054. And again,

  1055. verse 3 and

  1056. verse 9 sort

  1057. of reinforce

  1058. that.

  1059. Peter's very

  1060. clear that

  1061. lying to the

  1062. apostles and

  1063. lying to the

  1064. brethren, because

  1065. of the close

  1066. connection between

  1067. what the church

  1068. is and God, is

  1069. tantamount to

  1070. lying to God.

  1071. Scheming before

  1072. God himself.

  1073. It's Christ's

  1074. church with

  1075. Christ's

  1076. standards.

  1077. And Jesus

  1078. once demonstrated

  1079. reality in our

  1080. church family, not

  1081. just image and

  1082. appearance.

  1083. And he will

  1084. deal severely

  1085. with any who

  1086. settle for

  1087. appearance only.

  1088. Now, I don't

  1089. recall in all my

  1090. ministry years

  1091. somebody dropping

  1092. dead in front of

  1093. me, and I

  1094. haven't dropped

  1095. dead, so you

  1096. might well have

  1097. expected that as

  1098. well.

  1099. So God won't

  1100. necessarily do it

  1101. like that, but

  1102. there's a myriad

  1103. ways in which God

  1104. will find us

  1105. out, and God

  1106. will discipline

  1107. his church.

  1108. And I do

  1109. believe as a

  1110. church family

  1111. over years, we've

  1112. experienced some

  1113. of that hand of

  1114. God disciplining

  1115. us.

  1116. Jesus once

  1117. demonstrated reality

  1118. in our church

  1119. family, but you

  1120. see, few of us

  1121. would think that

  1122. their sin deserves

  1123. such punishment.

  1124. And friends, that's

  1125. our problem.

  1126. We don't see sin

  1127. in the church as

  1128. God sees it.

  1129. We don't see

  1130. fractions and

  1131. divisions within

  1132. our community, this

  1133. community of died

  1134. for people, as

  1135. Christ who died

  1136. for us sees it.

  1137. chapter 3, verse 26

  1138. says, the whole

  1139. point of God

  1140. sending Jesus was

  1141. to bless us by

  1142. delivering us from

  1143. our wickedness.

  1144. And when God

  1145. sees a form of

  1146. wickedness continuing

  1147. within our church

  1148. family, it's just

  1149. so contrary to what

  1150. Jesus died for.

  1151. God gave a very

  1152. clear demonstration

  1153. of his view of

  1154. sin in a warning

  1155. to the whole church.

1156. And in verse 5 and

  1157. verse 11, we're

  1158. told that that

  1159. warning sure worked.

  1160. A sense of fear

  1161. fell on the whole

  1162. church.

  1163. In what sense do

  1164. we talk about fear

  1165. gripping the church?

  1166. Well, I think it's

  1167. this fear of

  1168. offending a holy

  1169. God, fear of

  1170. messing with the

  1171. idea of church,

  1172. and somehow

  1173. or other it's

  1174. just something for

1175. us to be part of

  1176. rather than a

  1177. primary demonstration

  1178. of this changing

  1179. power of the

  1180. gospel before the

  1181. watching world.

  1182. Fear of lagging

  1183. authenticity and

  1184. truth and unity.

  1185. So what do we

  1186. need to learn from

  1187. this passage as I

  1188. wrap up?

  1189. Two things I want

  1190. to suggest.

  1191. First, as we speak

  1192. the gospel of Jesus,

  1193. we can expect

  1194. ferocious spiritual

  1195. warfare.

  1196. Now, I'm not

  1197. talking about

  1198. external threat.

  1199. I'm talking about

  1200. internal spiritual

  1201. warfare now.

  1202. Being part of the

  1203. unstoppable mission

  1204. of the unstoppable

  1205. Jesus to gather

  1206. his died for people

  1207. will always be

  1208. exciting because the

  1209. outcome is always

  1210. guaranteed, already

  1211. guaranteed.

  1212. defeated.

  1213. But my friends, it

  1214. will never be

  1215. easy.

  1216. Though ultimately

  1217. already defeated,

  1218. Satan is determined

  1219. to do as much

  1220. damage to Christ's

  1221. church as possibly

  1222. he can do.

  1223. kingdom building.

  1224. So, as witnesses

  1225. engaged in Christ's

  1226. mention of kingdom

  1227. building, we need

1228. to be on our guard

  1229. against satanic

  1230. counterattacks.

  1231. And again, here's

  1232. where we get

  1233. ourselves into

  1234. trouble because we

  1235. so often think of

  1236. our church community

  1237. more like a social

  1238. outing.

  1239. A place where we

  1240. come, we relax, we

  1241. chill out, we chat

  1242. with friends, we

  1243. expect to be happy,

1244. we expect it to be

  1245. nice, expect to learn

1246. a few things along the

  1247. way, we expect to

  1248. enjoy being there.

  1249. That's what we think

  1250. of church as rather

  1251. than a place of

  1252. spiritual warfare

  1253. where we might

  1254. expect attack.

  1255. And therefore, we

  1256. don't strategically

  1257. plan to defend

  1258. ourselves by

  1259. ensuring that we

  1260. help one another

  1261. continue, when

  1262. those attacks come,

  1263. continue to express

  1264. the mind of Christ

  1265. to one another.

  1266. So common that

  1267. when churches fall

  1268. into a fight, they

  1269. so quickly default

  1270. back to just

  1271. non-Christian ways

  1272. of doing it.

  1273. And the

  1274. credibility just

  1275. evaporates.

  1276. Second point

  1277. then, remaining, we

  1278. need to remain

  1279. authentic, or

  1280. remaining authentic

  1281. and credible will

  1282. be, therefore, our

  1283. greatest challenge

  1284. as individuals and

  1285. as a church

  1286. community.

  1287. we must always

1288. seek to live in a

  1289. way which enhances

  1290. and demonstrates

  1291. the reality of the

  1292. changing power of the

  1293. gospel.

  1294. Now, two things I

  1295. want to note very

  1296. carefully here.

  1297. I am so thankful

1298. that that is so much

  1299. to the forefront of

1300. what we are about as

  1301. our church, as a

  1302. church family.

  1303. I am really, really

  1304. appreciative of that,

  1305. and I thank the

  1306. Lord for it daily.

  1307. The second thing I

1308. want to say is here,

  1309. I am not talking

  1310. about perfection.

  1311. I am not talking

  1312. about us having to

  1313. get everything right.

1314. I am talking about us

  1315. being in the struggle

1316. on a daily basis to

  1317. make our living

  1318. practically as close

1319. as we can humanly to

  1320. what we are in

  1321. Christ.

  1322. Struggling to match

  1323. what is happening on

  1324. the inside with what

1325. we are doing on the

  1326. outside.

  1327. Friends, we need to

  1328. be aware of how

  1329. Satan will try to

1330. get at us as a

  1331. church family.

  1332. It is unlikely,

  1333. at least I am

  1334. speaking for myself

  1335. here, it is

  1336. unlikely that I

  1337. will easily give

  1338. way to external

  1339. threats.

  1340. Maybe I will be

  1341. found out about that

  1342. in due course, I

  1343. don't know.

  1344. But where I am

  1345. sitting in the

  1346. minute, it is

  1347. unlikely he will be

  1348. able to force us

  1349. as a church family

  1350. to bow to

  1351. external threats.

  1352. But while we are

  1353. priding ourselves on

  1354. that, he might

  1355. well neutralize us

  1356. in terms of our

  1357. testimony to the

  1358. local community

  1359. by internal

  1360. attack.

  1361. Perhaps it will

  1362. be an outbreak of

  1363. disunity.

  1364. And it can

  1365. easily happen.

  1366. Suddenly there is

  1367. an upsurge and

  1368. well, my

  1369. preference for my

  1370. songs, my

  1371. desire to have a

  1372. particular role in

  1373. the church, my

  1374. needs are not

  1375. being met by

  1376. others in this

  1377. church.

  1378. Look, I am

  1379. already being as

  1380. generous as is

  1381. possible to be and

  1382. the elders are

  1383. asking us to give

  1384. more money for a

  1385. new mission

  1386. venture.

  1387. Really?

  1388. Seriously?

  1389. How could they

  1390. dare to do that?

  1391. Perhaps it will be

  1392. before our

  1393. children or our

  1394. spouse in the

  1395. home through

  1396. actions and

  1397. attitudes practically

  1398. that don't line up

1399. with what we say to

  1400. our children and our

  1401. spouse when we're

  1402. reading the Bible or

  1403. whatever.

  1404. Perhaps the attack

  1405. will happen on the

  1406. sports field or in

  1407. your workplace or

  1408. when you're chatting

  1409. with neighbors in

  1410. your street.

  1411. And any attempt at

  1412. speaking the gospel of

  1413. Jesus is neutralized

  1414. because your actions

  1415. when you're playing

  1416. your sport or at

  1417. work just don't

  1418. light up and

  1419. people will roll

  1420. their eyes and

  1421. think, oh, here he

  1422. goes again or here

  1423. she goes again.

  1424. Friends, I'll finish

  1425. on this.

  1426. It's real easy to

  1427. talk about being

  1428. authentic.

  1429. All the things that

1430. we see in the early

  1431. church are so

  1432. appealing.

  1433. I think we genuinely

  1434. crave them.

  1435. But that's not

  1436. really the issue.

  1437. The issue is do

  1438. people around us

  1439. see the sort of

  1440. all-in commitment

  1441. to make this talk

  1442. of authenticity

  1443. demonstrated reality?

  1444. And at a very

  1445. practical level, that

  1446. means using our

  1447. assets, time, money,

  1448. energy, skill sets,

  1449. and having those

  1450. things as an

  1451. overflow.

  1452. The way we use

  1453. those things as an

  1454. overflow of joy as

  1455. Christ loved, died for,

  1456. and secure people.
