  1. So this morning's reading is from Ephesians 2, verses 1 to 10.

    Ephesians 2:1–10

  2. And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked,

  3. following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air,

  4. the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience,

  5. among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh,

  6. carrying out the desires of the body and the mind,

  7. and were by nature children of wrath like the rest of mankind.

  8. But God, being rich in mercy because of the great love with which he loved us,

  9. even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ.

  10. By Christ you have been saved, and raised us up with him and seated us with him

  11. in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages

  12. he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in the kindness towards us in Christ Jesus.

  13. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing.

  14. It is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

  15. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,

  16. which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

  17. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,

  18. for good works, and for good works.

  19. But I was struck this week again that my nine-year-old grandchild,

  20. who was doing a speech at his school up in Gandawindi,

  21. can speak with some knowledge about Anzac Day.

  22. Why is that?

  23. Well, it's because, very simply,

  24. what I might call this morning the doctrine of Anzac Day

  25. is well and truly taught every year in the schools.

  26. The doctrine is just a set of beliefs and values.

  27. An Anzac has a set of beliefs and values.

  28. And they shaped us as a nation,

  29. and they're taught without embarrassment or without apology

  30. in our schools every year.

  31. Why?

  32. To use the cliche,

  33. lest we forget.

  34. Today we also begin a nine-week doctrinal series

  35. focusing on how we experience God's grace and salvation.

  36. And yet an interesting thing might just have happened.

  37. That sentence alone would be enough

  38. to make lots and lots of Christians,

  39. perhaps even some here this morning,

  40. switch off,

  41. because it mentioned that dreaded word doctrine.

  42. The modern evangelical spirit

  43. says,

  44. look, I just want to praise and worship God,

  45. so don't offend me

  46. by trying to teach me doctrine.

  47. I just want to praise and worship God,

  48. so don't bore me

  49. with the notion of doctrine.

  50. I don't need it.

  51. I don't want it.

  52. Now that sort of statement sounds humble.

  53. I just want to praise the Lord.

  54. It sounds appealing.

  55. It sounds virtuous.

  56. But in actual fact,

  57. as it's stated,

  58. it's quite contrary to Scripture,

  59. particularly verses like Romans 12, 1-3,

  60. where it actually urges us as Christians

  61. to pursue radically transformed minds.

  62. And practically, it's nonsense.

  63. I mean, at the end of the day,

  64. how can we respond appropriately?

  65. How can we praise in thankfulness

  66. thankfulness?

  67. Unless we understand God's character.

  68. Unless we understand God's dealings

  69. with the world.

  70. Unless we understand

  71. what his mercy and compassion

  72. is meant to us in salvation.

  73. Unless we're aware of how we've experienced

  74. the salvation,

  75. quite contrary to anything we deserve.

  76. So my friends,

  77. as we start this series,

  78. it sounds as if I have to start negative,

  79. and that may be my character,

  80. but I just long

  81. that we might be excited about doctrine.

  82. That we might actually

  83. think that it's valuable

  84. to put the effort in

  85. to learn it.

  86. Why?

  87. Lest we forget.

  88. Lest we forget

  89. the beauty of the Lord.

  90. Lest we forget

  91. his compassion and mercy to us

  92. who deserve

  93. only his condemnation.

  94. Lest we forget

  95. the firm foundation

  96. we have to stand upon.

  97. The foundation from which

  98. we speak to others

  99. in our world from.

  100. Lest we forget.

  101. Well, let's jump into the series then

  102. with a question.

  103. Very general question.

  104. What is the Bible about?

  105. And you won't get any prizes

  106. for saying it's about God.

  107. Dig down into that a little bit more.

  108. And we say,

  109. well, it's about God

  110. and his relationship

  111. with mankind.

  112. And then we have to dig

  113. a little bit more and say,

  114. well, okay,

  115. that's a relationship

  116. that collapsed

  117. and has become hostile

  118. because of the rebellion

  119. of the image bearer

  120. against their creator.

  121. And then we dig

  122. a little bit more

  123. and say,

  124. well, that's not the full story

  125. of the Bible

  126. because the Bible tells us

  127. about God's action

  128. to undo that rebellion.

  129. To fix the mess.

  130. To restore the relationship.

  131. To fix the mess.

  132. So,

  133. in a simple statement,

  134. what is the Bible about?

  135. Well, the Bible is actually,

  136. it's of itself,

  137. a systematic

  138. or doctrinal statement

  139. of God's answer

  140. to the problem

  141. of human sin.

  142. And so we can say then

  143. that the interrelated,

  144. the key interrelated themes

  145. in the Bible are

  146. human sin

  147. and how we experience

  148. God's grace

  149. in salvation

  150. in response

  151. to our sin.

  152. And here's the rub.

  153. Unless we actually

  154. understand

  155. the problem

  156. of sin,

  157. we will not

  158. appreciate

  159. or desire

  160. God's solution.

  161. God's solution.

  162. Call me canon

  163. is a song

  164. along these lines

  165. that says,

  166. well,

  167. it's only when you know

  168. you're seriously

  169. and totally lost

  170. that you can fully

  171. appreciate

  172. being found.

  173. Unless we understand

  174. the problem of sin,

  175. we will not appreciate

  176. or desire

  177. God's solution.

  178. We won't even think

  179. we need

  180. a solution.

  181. And certainly

  182. not God's solution.

  183. So this morning

  184. I want to start

  185. the series

  186. by doing

  187. just a brief

  188. examination

  189. of what I'm

  190. going to call

  191. Paul's case study

  192. in Ephesians.

  193. The passage

  194. you just read to us.

  195. And Paul's writing

  196. to Christians

  197. in Ephesus

  198. and he's describing

  199. to them

  200. how they experienced

  201. and why they needed

  202. to experience

  203. God's grace

  204. and salvation.

  205. It's typical,

  206. this passage,

  207. I've just chosen one,

  208. but it's typical

  209. of dozens of passages

  210. across the Bible

  211. I could reference

  212. today but don't

  213. have time.

  214. And in this passage

  215. Paul makes two

  216. very, very simple

  217. points but they're

  218. profound points.

  219. Sets out the case

  220. beautifully as he

  221. speaks to these

  222. Christians at Ephesus.

  223. The first thing he

  224. says to them is,

  225. verse 1 there,

  226. at one time

  227. you were dead

  228. towards God

  229. spiritually.

  230. Just read the

  231. passage again.

  232. Very clear.

  233. And you were dead.

  234. And as we read this,

  235. just see in your

  236. mind that which is

  237. dead.

  238. So you can think,

  239. oh, if you've seen

  240. a person that's dead,

  241. think of that.

  242. If it's just

  243. roadkill,

  244. then think of that.

  245. But,

  246. and you were dead

  247. in the trespasses

  248. and sins

  249. in which you once

  250. walked.

  251. Following the course

  252. of this world,

  253. following the prince

  254. of the power

  255. of the air,

  256. the spirit that is

  257. now at work

  258. in the sons

  259. of disobedience,

  260. among whom

  261. we all once

  262. lived

  263. in the passions

  264. of our flesh,

  265. carrying out the

  266. desires of the body

  267. and the mind,

  268. and were by nature

  269. children of wrath.

  270. It's graphic

  271. language,

  272. isn't it?

  273. And Paul

  274. uses graphic

  275. language

  276. to make

  277. absolutely

  278. clear

  279. the problem

  280. of human

  281. sinfulness.

  282. What's the problem?

  283. Well,

  284. at one time,

  285. every single person,

  286. says Paul,

  287. is like

  288. a corpse

  289. in terms

  290. of their

  291. relationship

  292. with God.

  293. What does that

  294. mean?

  295. Well,

  296. it means

  297. every part

  298. of the heart

  299. and the mind

  300. and the will

  301. is dead

  302. or deadened

  303. towards God.

  304. your attitudes,

  305. your emotions,

  306. your affections

  307. effectively

  308. deadened.

  309. the result

  310. leaves people

  311. totally

  312. unaware

  313. of their

  314. true

  315. spiritual

  316. situation.

  317. That's by nature

  318. what it is

  319. to be dead.

  320. You can

  321. see a

  322. body there

  323. and you can

  324. poke it

  325. or you can

  326. see a dead

  327. animal on the

  328. side of the road

  329. and you can

  330. kick it

  331. and poke it

  332. and drag it

  333. but it's

  334. unaware of

  335. its situation.

  336. It gets

  337. run over

  338. multiple times

  339. by vehicles

  340. but it's

  341. just there.

  342. It doesn't

  343. know what's

  344. happening.

  345. That's the

  346. picture language

  347. here.

  348. Totally

  349. unaware of

  350. their true

  351. spiritual

  352. situation

  353. and we're

  354. still totally

  355. unable to

  356. do a thing

  357. about it.

  358. To do

  359. anything to

  360. change.

  361. How did

  362. such a

  363. desperate

  364. situation

  365. develop?

  366. Well,

  367. verse 2

  368. is the

  369. direct

  370. consequence

  371. of our

  372. sin

  373. or rebellion.

  374. the

  375. expression

  376. of which

  377. is,

  378. in verse 2,

  379. following

  380. Satan's

  381. rejection

  382. of God

  383. and his

  384. determined

  385. opposition

  386. to be doing

  387. things God's

  388. way.

  389. Not God's

  390. way,

  391. but my

  392. way.

  393. Now,

  394. in

  395. classic

  396. theological

  397. terms,

  398. we call

  399. this

  400. total

  401. depravity.

  402. Now,

  403. that word

  404. depravity

  405. have to

  406. work on

  407. because

  408. it's not

  409. a common

  410. word these

  411. days,

  412. so I've

  413. sort of

  414. gone for

  415. total

  416. inability,

  417. which isn't

  418. quite the

  419. same,

  420. but it's

  421. close enough,

  422. I think,

  423. for our

  424. purposes.

  425. Total

  426. inability.

  427. Total

  428. inability to

  429. even recognize

  430. your predicament.

  431. Total

  432. inability to

  433. change your

  434. predicament.

  435. Just like

  436. a corpse

  437. is defined

  438. by total

  439. inability.

  440. God's

  441. will.

  442. And it's

  443. called that

  444. because when

  445. a person

  446. is born,

  447. they have

  448. no awareness

  449. of God's

  450. will,

  451. no inclination

  452. to serve

  453. God,

  454. no inclination

  455. even to

  456. pursue God.

  457. God's

  458. will.

  459. What we're

  460. talking about

  461. here is a

  462. state of

  463. total

  464. disconnect

  465. between God's

  466. intentions for

  467. his image

  468. bearers and

  469. the reality

  470. of life for

  471. his image

  472. bearers.

  473. When God

  474. created his

  475. image bearers,

  476. he created

  477. them with a

  478. mind to

  479. know his

  480. will.

  481. He created

  482. them with a

  483. heart to

  484. do his

  485. will.

  486. He created

  487. them with

  488. affections to

  489. love and

  490. delight in

  491. him.

  492. But in

  493. a spiritual

  494. coup d'etat

  495. of sin,

  496. that's all

  497. gone.

  498. Instead,

  499. people now

  500. claim,

  501. image bearers

  502. now claim the

  503. world to be

  504. their own and

  505. dismiss God,

  506. the creator.

  507. They live

  508. actively as

  509. though they

  510. are autonomous,

  511. as if they

  512. don't have to

  513. answer to

  514. anyone else,

  515. especially not

  516. God.

  517. They live as

  518. though they

  519. are God.

  520. the image

  521. bearer has

  522. now become

  523. the image

  524. setter.

  525. It's a

  526. total disconnect.

  527. But more

  528. than that,

  529. it's a

  530. relational

  531. problem.

  532. The

  533. natural

  534. inclination

  535. of any

  536. person in

  537. their natural

  538. state when

  539. they're born

  540. in this

  541. world is

  542. hostility to

  543. God.

  544. sometimes

  545. that's

  546. expressed in

  547. a really

  548. aggressive

  549. rejection of

  550. God.

  551. But if you

  552. read Romans

  553. 1,

  554. sometimes it

  555. can be

  556. expressed in

  557. a religious

  558. veneer,

  559. where it

  560. appears as if

  561. people are

  562. seeking God

  563. and searching

  564. for God,

  565. but actually

  566. they're not.

  567. They're actually,

  568. according to Romans

  569. 1,

  570. reshaping or

  571. rejigging God

  572. and bringing

  573. them down to

  574. something that's

  575. manageable and

  576. something that's

  577. acceptable to

  578. them.

  579. And so in

  580. a sense,

  581. it's another

  582. form of

  583. rebellion.

  584. You say,

  585. well God,

  586. I'll acknowledge

  587. you, but not

  588. like that.

  589. I'll acknowledge

  590. you whenever I

  591. can shape you

  592. in a way that's

  593. convenient to

  594. me or in a

  595. way that you're

  596. no threat to

  597. me.

  598. Either way,

  599. it's a deep,

  600. deep relational

  601. problem.

  602. And it

  603. becomes then a

  604. legal problem.

  605. Children of

  606. wrath.

  607. Verse 3.

  608. We're told

  609. God speaks.

  610. He takes

  611. himself very

  612. seriously.

  613. He responds

  614. to such

  615. rebellion by

  616. justly condemning

  617. the rebel.

  618. So the

  619. outworking of

  620. all that is

  621. that when

  622. we're born,

  623. we are

  624. guilty before

  625. God.

  626. We are

  627. objects of

  628. his wrath.

  629. verse 3.

  630. That's pretty

  631. strong language,

  632. isn't it?

  633. It's picture

  634. language we

  635. don't like

  636. today.

  637. Because it's

  638. not flattering

  639. to us.

  640. it speaks of

  641. our helplessness,

  642. our inability.

  643. But friends,

  644. we have to

  645. say it's a

  646. very common

  647. problem.

  648. The way of

  649. the world,

  650. the course of

  651. this world.

  652. It is what

  653. every person

  654. is born into.

  655. we're

  656. wrong.

  657. We often

  658. think, well,

  659. the majority

  660. of people

  661. can't be

  662. wrong when

  663. they think

  664. life is

  665. like this.

  666. But the

  667. Bible's

  668. telling us

  669. quite the

  670. opposite.

  671. The majority

  672. of people

  673. are wrong.

  674. together,

  675. blissfully

  676. unaware

  677. of that

  678. predicament

  679. that they're

  680. in,

  681. and the

  682. judgment

  683. that's looming

  684. and impending

  685. on them.

  686. People

  687. neither realize

  688. their predicament

  689. nor realize

  690. they're unable

  691. to please

  692. God in any

  693. way,

  694. or make

  695. themselves

  696. acceptable

  697. to God

  698. when they

  699. die.

  700. That's what

  701. it is to be

  702. spiritually dead

  703. towards God.

  704. Now,

  705. at this point

  706. I want to

  707. address two

  708. common questions.

  709. It might be a

  710. question that's

  711. in your mind.

  712. You might be

  713. saying, well,

  714. come on,

  715. are people

  716. really that

  717. sinful?

  718. Well,

  719. total depravity

  720. or total

  721. inability

  722. does not

  723. mean,

  724. does not

  725. mean that

  726. any given

  727. person is

  728. as bad

  729. as they

  730. possibly

  731. could be.

  732. That's not

  733. what the

  734. Bible's

  735. teaching at

  736. all.

  737. It's not

  738. teaching that

  739. a person is

  740. not capable

  741. of doing

  742. good things

  743. in our

  744. community,

  745. in our

  746. society.

  747. It's not

  748. teaching that

  749. people don't

  750. have a sense

  751. of right

  752. and wrong.

  753. The Bible

  754. affirms all

  755. those things.

  756. People do

  757. good things

  758. in our world.

  759. People do

  760. have a sense

  761. of right

  762. and wrong.

  763. That's not

  764. what we're

  765. meaning,

  766. talking about

  767. when we

  768. talk about

  769. total inability,

  770. total depravity.

  771. But it does

  772. mean this,

  773. that sin

  774. has mutilated

  775. every faculty

  776. of us

  777. image bearers.

  778. Sin has

  779. disabled

  780. every good

  781. thing that

  782. the Lord

  783. created in

  784. us.

  785. See,

  786. people are

  787. not born

  788. morally

  789. neutral.

  790. It's hard

  791. to believe

  792. that when

  793. you pick

  794. up my

  795. grandchildren.

  796. It's hard

  797. to believe,

  798. well,

  799. for a little

  800. while,

  801. it's hard

  802. to believe

  803. they're not

  804. born morally

  805. neutral.

  806. By the time

  807. they get to

  808. six months,

  809. you get no

  810. doubts about

  811. that.

  812. But when

  813. they look

  814. sweet and

  815. innocent and

  816. newborn,

  817. you think,

  818. wow.

  819. people are

  820. not born

  821. morally

  822. neutral.

  823. People are

  824. born

  825. hardwired

  826. to reject

  827. God,

  828. to oppose

  829. God,

  830. to be

  831. hostile to

  832. God.

  833. We might

  834. say it's

  835. in their

  836. DNA.

  837. And the

  838. Bible's

  839. constantly,

  840. if you can

  841. read the

  842. Bible from

  843. comfort to

  844. comfort,

  845. and constantly

  846. it's

  847. describing

  848. this

  849. condition

  850. overflowing.

  851. It overflows

  852. from our

  853. hearts,

  854. and it

  855. messes up

  856. everything we

  857. do in

  858. our natural

  859. state.

  860. And it's

  861. especially

  862. true of

  863. how people

  864. treat God.

  865. And you

  866. can see it.

  867. It's sort

  868. of intuitive.

  869. We don't

  870. need to,

  871. in a sense,

  872. have the

  873. Bible stand

  874. alone in

  875. this.

  876. We can see

  877. it as we

  878. engage with

  879. people.

  880. People in

  881. our world

  882. generally

  883. couldn't

  884. care less

  885. about God.

  886. But even

  887. where they

  888. do have

  889. some sense

  890. of God,

  891. they cannot

  892. think or

  893. choose or

  894. do anything

  895. that would

  896. be acceptable

  897. to God.

  898. So,

  899. are people

  900. really that

  901. sinful?

  902. Well,

  903. in terms of

  904. the Bible,

  905. yes.

  906. Total

  907. inability.

  908. second

  909. question

  910. that's

  911. often

  912. thrown

  913. up

  914. then is

  915. don't

  916. people

  917. have

  918. a

  919. free

  920. will

  921. whereby

  922. they

  923. can

  924. choose

  925. to

  926. serve

  927. the

  928. Lord?

  929. Don't

  930. people

  931. have a

  932. free

  933. will?

  934. Well,

  935. the problem

  936. here,

  937. it's a real

  938. problem,

  939. but not as

  940. difficult as

  941. what people

  942. sometimes think.

  943. The problem

  944. here is that

  945. people can

  946. choose real

  947. choice,

  948. which we

  949. all have,

  950. with what the

  951. Bible calls

  952. free will.

  953. I like to

  954. use an

  955. illustration

  956. here,

  957. I don't

  958. know where

  959. it come

  960. from,

  961. I've

  962. plagiarized

  963. it from

  964. somebody or

  965. somewhere else,

  966. but I can't

  967. remember where

  968. now.

  969. The illustration

  970. goes like

  971. this,

  972. a vulture

  973. circling over

  974. the top,

  975. and on the

  976. ground here,

  977. under the

  978. vulture,

  979. there is,

  980. over here,

  981. a rotten

  982. sheep carcass,

  983. stinks,

  984. and beside

  985. the rotten

  986. sheep carcass,

  987. a couple of

  988. meters away,

  989. there's a

  990. beautiful

  991. baked dinner

  992. with veggies,

  993. gravy,

  994. mint sauce.

  995. Which one's

  996. the bulk

  997. you're going

  998. to go for?

  999. It will go

  1000. for the

  1001. carcass.

  1002. Why?

  1003. Because that's

  1004. its nature.

  1005. It looks at

  1006. the two,

  1007. it has a

  1008. choice,

  1009. but it

  1010. goes for

  1011. the carcass

  1012. because

  1013. its choice

  1014. is bounded

  1015. by its

  1016. nature.

  1017. It makes

  1018. a choice

  1019. based on

  1020. how it

  1021. is hard

  1022. wired.

  1023. And it's

  1024. the same

  1025. way,

  1026. I think,

  1027. that people

  1028. are hard

  1029. wired to

  1030. reject God

  1031. in their

  1032. hearts and

  1033. minds and

  1034. attitudes.

  1035. it's a

  1036. real choice

  1037. that people

  1038. make,

  1039. but that

  1040. choice is

  1041. shaped and

  1042. limited by

  1043. their nature

  1044. they're born

  1045. with.

  1046. So in

  1047. practical terms

  1048. that means

  1049. then that

  1050. people are

  1051. not sinners

  1052. because they

  1053. choose to

  1054. sin.

  1055. People are

  1056. not sinners

  1057. because they

  1058. choose to

  1059. sin.

  1060. People

  1061. choose to

  1062. sin because

  1063. they're born

  1064. sinners.

  1065. sinners.

  1066. Born

  1067. hostile to

  1068. God.

  1069. Born with

  1070. the hard

  1071. wire to

  1072. reject God,

  1073. to go

  1074. against what

  1075. he represents,

  1076. what he

  1077. calls them

  1078. to.

  1079. So where

  1080. do we go

  1081. from here

  1082. then?

  1083. Well,

  1084. we used

  1085. this illustration

  1086. before.

  1087. When you

  1088. seek treatment

  1089. from a

  1090. doctor,

  1091. the doctor's

  1092. assessment of

  1093. your illness

  1094. determines

  1095. the treatment.

  1096. Headache,

  1097. or if you

  1098. go and

  1099. have a

  1100. Panadol.

  1101. A tumour

  1102. in your

  1103. brain,

  1104. much more

  1105. radical

  1106. approach.

  1107. Life

  1108. threatening

  1109. disease,

  1110. major

  1111. surgery.

  1112. His

  1113. starting

  1114. point

  1115. determines

  1116. what follows.

  1117. That's

  1118. precisely

  1119. Paul's

  1120. point

  1121. here.

  1122. People

  1123. are not

  1124. just

  1125. spiritually

  1126. off

  1127. colour.

  1128. People

  1129. are not

  1130. just

  1131. spiritually

  1132. distracted

  1133. and just

  1134. need a

  1135. little bit

  1136. of urging

  1137. to get

  1138. back onto

  1139. the right

  1140. track

  1141. again.

  1142. Paul

  1143. says

  1144. people

  1145. are

  1146. spiritually

  1147. dead.

  1148. They

  1149. need

  1150. something

  1151. major

  1152. to

  1153. happen.

  1154. person's

  1155. predicament

  1156. before

  1157. God

  1158. is

  1159. much

  1160. more

  1161. serious

  1162. than

  1163. just

  1164. something

  1165. that

  1166. requires

  1167. a little

  1168. pick-me-up,

  1169. spiritual

  1170. pick-me-up,

  1171. or a

  1172. spiritual

  1173. injection.

  1174. Before

  1175. God,

  1176. they're

  1177. spiritually

  1178. dead,

  1179. spiritually

  1180. helpless.

  1181. Verse

  1182. 12 of

  1183. Ephesians 2,

  1184. Paul puts

  1185. it in

  1186. slightly

  1187. different

  1188. words.

  1189. He

  1190. says,

  1191. people

  1192. are

  1193. without

  1194. hope

  1195. and

  1196. without

  1197. God

  1198. in

  1199. the

  1200. world.

  1201. Now,

  1202. whatever way

  1203. you look

  1204. at it,

  1205. that's a

  1206. pretty

  1207. bleak

  1208. prognosis,

  1209. isn't it?

  1210. Or it

  1211. would be

  1212. without

  1213. more

  1214. graphic

  1215. language

  1216. that Paul

  1217. uses here

  1218. in verses

  1219. 4 through

  1220. 10.

  1221. And just

  1222. feel the

  1223. way this

  1224. sits neatly

  1225. in opposition

  1226. to the

  1227. first part.

  1228. And you

  1229. were

  1230. dead.

  1231. Verse

  1232. 4,

  1233. but God

  1234. made you

  1235. alive.

  1236. Just

  1237. feel the

  1238. balancing

  1239. and the

  1240. removing

  1241. of that

  1242. terrible

  1243. predicament.

  1244. God

  1245. made you

  1246. alive.

  1247. Friends,

  1248. just let

  1249. that statement

  1250. sink in.

  1251. And

  1252. then keep

  1253. reading to

  1254. see that

  1255. everything

  1256. mentioned

  1257. in these

  1258. verses is

  1259. something that

  1260. God does

  1261. for us

  1262. and does

  1263. in us.

  1264. Now,

  1265. why would

  1266. we expect

  1267. that to

  1268. follow?

  1269. Because

  1270. we've already

  1271. established

  1272. there's total

  1273. helplessness,

  1274. total inability,

  1275. total blindness,

  1276. total unawareness.

  1277. So if anything

  1278. significant is going

  1279. to happen,

  1280. if we're going

  1281. to be rescued,

  1282. if we're going

  1283. to be turned

  1284. around,

  1285. if we're going

  1286. to be made

  1287. alive,

  1288. then God

  1289. will need

  1290. to do it

  1291. for us.

  1292. God will

  1293. need to

  1294. do it

  1295. in us.

  1296. The two

  1297. parts go

  1298. together.

  1299. Salvation

  1300. is God's

  1301. work from

  1302. start to

  1303. finish.

  1304. God's

  1305. love and

  1306. mercy

  1307. combine to

  1308. give new

  1309. life to

  1310. the sinner.

  1311. God knew

  1312. because God

  1313. had the

  1314. proper

  1315. diagnosis.

  1316. God knew

  1317. that it would

  1318. never be

  1319. enough just

  1320. to say,

  1321. well,

  1322. look,

  1323. hang on

  1324. a sec,

  1325. now,

  1326. I'm going

  1327. to make

  1328. salvation

  1329. available and

  1330. I'll put

  1331. it on the

  1332. table over

  1333. here.

  1334. And so

  1335. when you're

  1336. ready,

  1337. you just

  1338. go and

  1339. make use

  1340. of it

  1341. as it

  1342. pleases

  1343. you.

  1344. God knows

  1345. that that

  1346. wouldn't

  1347. work because

  1348. we're dead

  1349. spiritually.

  1350. We're unaware

  1351. that we even

  1352. need what

  1353. he's provided

  1354. for us if

  1355. he did it

  1356. like that.

  1357. people need

  1358. to be

  1359. renewed,

  1360. not just

  1361. told that

  1362. renewal is

  1363. possible.

  1364. They need

  1365. to be

  1366. resurrected.

  1367. They need

  1368. to be

  1369. brought back

  1370. to life.

  1371. And only

  1372. God's power

  1373. working in

  1374. us can do

  1375. that.

  1376. It's not

  1377. enough to

  1378. bring the

  1379. gospel message

  1380. to people

  1381. who have

  1382. no desire,

  1383. no ability

  1384. to respond.

  1385. God needed

  1386. to bring the

  1387. sinner

  1388. to his

  1389. solution,

  1390. the Lord

  1391. Jesus

  1392. Christ.

  1393. He needed

  1394. to actually

  1395. not just

  1396. bring them

  1397. but actually

  1398. make them

  1399. alive.

  1400. Do radical

  1401. surgery in

  1402. the inside

  1403. out.

  1404. Change their

  1405. DNA if you

  1406. like.

  1407. And we'll

  1408. see more of

  1409. that over

  1410. the coming

  1411. weeks.

  1412. It is not

  1413. that we come

  1414. alive by our

  1415. own choice,

  1416. by our own

  1417. efforts.

  1418. it is by

  1419. God's grace.

  1420. We're

  1421. chatting about

  1422. this as elders

  1423. past Monday

  1424. night.

  1425. And one of

  1426. the comments

  1427. was that

  1428. one of the

  1429. elders said

  1430. that for

  1431. years they'd

  1432. never really

  1433. understood why

  1434. these things

  1435. are called

  1436. the doctrines

  1437. of grace.

  1438. Don't all

  1439. Christians

  1440. believe in

  1441. grace?

  1442. We'll see

  1443. more of this

  1444. over the next

  1445. few weeks

  1446. as well.

  1447. But the

  1448. idea of

  1449. doctrines of

  1450. grace is that

  1451. grace every

  1452. step of the

  1453. way because

  1454. we're left

  1455. to ourselves

  1456. we're unable,

  1457. unwilling.

  1458. It's not

  1459. just some

  1460. grace to

  1461. get us up

  1462. and running

  1463. and then

  1464. we're on

  1465. our own or

  1466. some grace

  1467. to then help

  1468. us get over

  1469. the death

  1470. line into

  1471. heaven.

  1472. It's God's

  1473. grace every

  1474. moment of

  1475. the way.

  1476. Because apart

  1477. from his

  1478. actions in

  1479. us and for

  1480. us we just

  1481. would not be

  1482. able to do

  1483. it.

  1484. But more

  1485. of that as I

  1486. say over

  1487. the coming

  1488. weeks.

  1489. verses 6

  1490. and 7

  1491. quite

  1492. instant when

  1493. you see

  1494. exactly what

  1495. God has

  1496. done for

  1497. us.

  1498. We've been

  1499. raised up

  1500. with Christ.

  1501. In other

  1502. words all

  1503. the privileges

  1504. all the

  1505. power of

  1506. God that

  1507. brought

  1508. Jesus back

  1509. to life

  1510. and took

  1511. him back

  1512. to heaven

  1513. as it

  1514. were all

  1515. of that

  1516. has been

  1517. invested in

  1518. us Christians

  1519. you and

  1520. me.

  1521. verse 8

  1522. for by

  1523. grace you

  1524. have been

  1525. saved

  1526. through

  1527. faith

  1528. and this

  1529. is not

  1530. your undoing

  1531. it as the

  1532. gift of

  1533. God.

  1534. Even our

  1535. faith and

  1536. we'll see

  1537. more of this

  1538. over the

  1539. next few

  1540. weeks.

  1541. Even our

  1542. faith

  1543. has been

  1544. given to us

  1545. as a gift

  1546. of God.

  1547. That's been

  1548. something God's

  1549. enabled us to

  1550. do.

  1551. And he had

  1552. to do that

  1553. because previously

  1554. we were

  1555. unwilling and

  1556. unaware of

  1557. our

  1558. predicament.

  1559. God needs

  1560. to actually

  1561. give us

  1562. the

  1563. willingness

  1564. and the

  1565. ability.

  1566. And God

  1567. does that

  1568. through his

  1569. spirit.

  1570. He actually

  1571. opens our

  1572. eyes to

  1573. our predicament.

  1574. He changes

  1575. our desires

  1576. and attitudes

  1577. so that we

  1578. actually reach

  1579. out and take

  1580. the gracious

  1581. gift of

  1582. salvation.

  1583. And finally

  1584. verses 9 and

  1585. 10.

  1586. Even the

  1587. changed

  1588. lifestyle of

  1589. new obedience

  1590. and service

  1591. of Jesus

  1592. that results

  1593. from being

  1594. saved, from

  1595. having new

  1596. attitudes, from

  1597. having desires,

  1598. even that is

  1599. something God

  1600. has intended to

  1601. give us and

  1602. plan for us all

  1603. along.

  1604. It's grace from

  1605. start to finish.

  1606. Now just let

  1607. me sort of wind

  1608. up now with

  1609. a couple of

  1610. so what.

  1611. Given this, why

  1612. do people find

  1613. this truth so

  1614. hard to accept?

  1615. And people do.

  1616. People stumble at

  1617. this very starting

  1618. point.

  1619. This notion of

  1620. our total

  1621. inability before

  1622. God.

  1623. Now why?

  1624. Why do we

  1625. stumble on it?

  1626. Why is it so

  1627. hard to accept?

  1628. Well I think it's

  1629. because the

  1630. starting point for

  1631. thinking about

  1632. God and people

  1633. and salvation has

  1634. changed massively.

  1635. And throughout

  1636. history the

  1637. pattern is always

  1638. the same.

  1639. When people

  1640. move away from

  1641. God's description

  1642. of sin, when

  1643. people move away

  1644. from God's

  1645. description of

  1646. the sinner, then

  1647. people start to

  1648. believe they can

  1649. save themselves.

  1650. Albeit they'll

  1651. recognize they need

  1652. some help from

  1653. God, but generally

  1654. people will think,

  1655. well, yeah, I need

1656. God to help me do

  1657. this, but generally

1658. I can do this and

  1659. this and this.

  1660. So it's a sort of

  1661. cooperative effort.

  1662. And that can only

  1663. happen when people

  1664. have moved away from

  1665. God's view of sin

  1666. and the sinner.

  1667. In our day the

  1668. pattern's the same.

  1669. So many so-called

  1670. evangelical

  1671. Protestant churches

  1672. have as their

  1673. starting point the

  1674. humanist philosophy of

  1675. our society rather

  1676. than the Bible.

  1677. And our humanist

  1678. philosophy of society

  1679. says that we're

  1680. basically good people.

  1681. Yes, we need some

  1682. help, we're not as

1683. good as we could be,

  1684. and we need some

  1685. help at particular

  1686. points, but

  1687. essentially I work

  1688. with Jesus as a

  1689. good person.

  1690. That's not what the

  1691. Bible says.

  1692. The belief of our

  1693. world is that man

1694. is at the center of

  1695. things.

  1696. Given the right

  1697. circumstances, given

  1698. our own reason, given

  1699. our own logic, we'll

  1700. be able to work

  1701. things out and get

  1702. it right.

  1703. And history and

  1704. experience tells us

  1705. that's nonsense.

  1706. And so with this

  1707. starting point,

  1708. churches have lost a

  1709. real sense of what

1710. it means for God to

  1711. have a holy character,

  1712. what it means for

  1713. God's demands in

  1714. response to the

  1715. rebellion of his

  1716. image bearers.

  1717. And so churches

  1718. actually teach that

1719. by and by God is

  1720. happy to respond to

  1721. what essentially we

  1722. think and decide is

  1723. right.

1724. And God is like a

  1725. grandfather figure who's

  1726. just grateful for some

  1727. attention, who's just

  1728. grateful for people to

  1729. treat him nicely.

1730. And people have lost a

1731. real sense of sin, I

  1732. think.

1733. So if you look at the

  1734. word sin, I mentioned

1735. this a few weeks ago,

  1736. the word sin mostly

  1737. today has been

  1738. secularized in its

  1739. usage.

  1740. It's no longer a

  1741. theological word, I

  1742. don't think, in our

  1743. society.

1744. If people use it at

1745. all, it's usually in the

1746. context of a failure to

  1747. accept reasonable

  1748. standards of decency,

  1749. decent conduct.

  1750. And that's generally

  1751. defined by our

  1752. culture, by our

  1753. community.

  1754. Or, as I said a

  1755. couple of weeks ago,

  1756. sin is just an

  1757. indulgence in some

  1758. food that's really not

1759. good for you but so

  1760. intensely desirable and

  1761. pleasurable, like the

  1762. lollies here this

  1763. morning.

1764. And so the problem is

  1765. that when we start,

  1766. when people start to

  1767. define sin, then we

  1768. just start to slide

  1769. over the definition and

  1770. make it more palatable,

  1771. make it more comfortable

  1772. for us.

  1773. And that's under

1774. pressure to do so from

  1775. our so-called progressive

  1776. society, intolerant

  1777. society.

1778. Don't dare speak to me

1779. as if I'm in this sort

  1780. of condition.

  1781. I'm a good person.

1782. Yes, I've got flaws, but

  1783. essentially I'm a good

  1784. person.

  1785. Give me a chance and I'll

  1786. get it right.

1787. But in the Bible you

  1788. see sin is defined

  1789. always as an offense

  1790. against God.

  1791. It may have

  1792. implications in our

  1793. behavior before and

  1794. towards others, but

  1795. primarily sin is about

  1796. rejecting God and his

  1797. authority.

1798. And once we lose that

1799. sense of sin and that

  1800. sense of God's holiness,

1801. then, and we see it in

  1802. churches, everything just

  1803. slides and becomes

  1804. flexible.

  1805. And gospel can become

  1806. about people.

1807. And the gospel is so then

1808. it's about my needs, my

  1809. desires.

1810. The gospel will make me

  1811. happy.

1812. The gospel will build my

  1813. self-esteem.

1814. That Jesus will help me

  1815. be fulfilled.

1816. Or it can be the gospel

  1817. of works, performance.

1818. You know, it says, well,

1819. okay, yes, you need help

  1820. from Jesus, but alongside

1821. that help, he expects you

1822. to read your Bible and get

1823. to church and pray and

1824. help people and do all

  1825. these other things.

  1826. And a combination of

1827. these two things will get

  1828. you over the line.

  1829. The Bible is totally

  1830. opposed to any such

  1831. thinking.

1832. The word of the Bible is

  1833. that God saves sinners.

1834. Now, when you think about

1835. it, we actually pray that,

  1836. don't we?

1837. Now, why do we pray that?

  1838. God, because intuitively,

1839. we have a sense of God

1840. when we come to him,

  1841. especially in this context,

1842. we have a sense of God

1843. that is so far removed from

1844. us, and a sense of our own

  1845. unworthiness.

1846. We intuitively know that we

  1847. need to be saved.

1848. Contrary to what we deserve,

1849. we need God to do for us

1850. what we could never do for

  1851. ourselves.

1852. Friends, this truth is hard

1853. to accept because it is a

  1854. blow to human arrogance.

  1855. It's a blow to human

  1856. self-confidence.

  1857. And it's such a blow

  1858. that people, even

  1859. professing Christian churches,

1860. would prefer to replace this

  1861. truth with a lie,

  1862. or a sort of

  1863. a cheap substitute

  1864. of this truth.

  1865. And we can understand

  1866. why, because naturally,

  1867. you'll understand this,

1868. I see it in myself,

  1869. naturally,

  1870. we quickly and easily

  1871. reject any assessment

1872. of self which is not

  1873. complimentary.

  1874. our instinct is to

  1875. excuse self

  1876. and blame others

  1877. for our behavior

  1878. as required.

  1879. And that is an

  1880. evidence of the very

1881. point I'm trying to make.

  1882. Well,

  1883. second, so what?

  1884. Given this,

  1885. what sort of people

  1886. ought Christians to be?

  1887. And I finish fairly

  1888. briefly on this.

  1889. What sort of

1890. people ought we to be

  1891. as Christians?

1892. If we get a hold

  1893. of this truth

  1894. of being spiritually

  1895. dead to God,

  1896. totally unable,

  1897. totally inability,

  1898. but God

  1899. making us alive.

  1900. Well,

  1901. if we understand

  1902. what God has done

1903. for us and in us

  1904. in making us alive,

  1905. then

  1906. surely,

  1907. of all people,

  1908. we ought to be

  1909. totally fanatic,

  1910. total fanatics

  1911. in responding

  1912. to God.

  1913. Surely we'd be

  1914. people who'd love

  1915. to sing his praises

  1916. as I started,

  1917. but now with the

  1918. full depth

  1919. of theology

  1920. driving those

  1921. praises.

  1922. If you and I

  1923. really believe

  1924. we're dead in sin

  1925. and under God's wrath

  1926. before God's grace

  1927. burst into our lives,

  1928. then, my friends,

  1929. we will be humble

  1930. and compassionate

  1931. in our dealings

  1932. with others,

  1933. especially as we engage

  1934. in the community.

  1935. How bizarre is it

  1936. that Christians

  1937. sort of want to

  1938. step back

  1939. from

  1940. contact

  1941. with unbelievers

  1942. who are just

  1943. doing what

  1944. unbelievers do?

  1945. How can that be

  1946. if we understand

  1947. that we also

  1948. were dead

  1949. to God

  1950. at one stage

  1951. but were made

  1952. alive by God's grace?

  1953. Why would we

  1954. recoil

  1955. from that

  1956. sort of behavior,

  1957. that sort of

  1958. person?

  1959. Surely,

  1960. my friends,

  1961. we'd be wanting

  1962. to reach over

  1963. to that person

  1964. and say,

  1965. hey,

  1966. yeah,

  1967. that's just

  1968. exactly what

  1969. I was like

  1970. and let me

  1971. tell you,

  1972. let me point

  1973. you to

  1974. the solution

  1975. to your problem.

  1976. Humble

  1977. and compassionate.

  1978. We ought

  1979. never,

  1980. my friends,

  1981. I think,

  1982. look down

  1983. our noses

  1984. at those

  1985. who perhaps

  1986. come among us

  1987. who are struggling

  1988. or whom

  1989. we engage

  1990. with at work

  1991. or elsewhere

  1992. in the community.

  1993. and if we

  1994. really believe

  1995. that sin

  1996. is so offensive

  1997. to God

  1998. that nothing

  1999. less than

  2000. the death

  2001. of a son

  2002. can deal

  2003. with,

  2004. then,

  2005. my friends,

  2006. I think we'll

  2007. be careful

  2008. about our own

  2009. sin,

  2010. will we not?

  2011. If the very

  2012. purpose

  2013. of

  2014. Jesus coming

  2015. into this world

  2016. was to rescue

  2017. us in our

  2018. deadness

  2019. where sin

  2020. didn't even

  2021. rate on our

  2022. radars,

  2023. if he gave

  2024. us new

  2025. life so we

  2026. might be

  2027. true image

  2028. bearers,

  2029. then surely

  2030. we'll want

  2031. to be careful

  2032. about our

  2033. own sin.

  2034. Lest that

  2035. make a mockery

  2036. of the very

  2037. thing that

  2038. Jesus came

  2039. to do.

  2040. Let me

  2041. close in

  2042. prayer.

  2043. Lord,

  2044. even this

  2045. morning,

  2046. some maybe

  2047. find it hard

  2048. to hear this

  2049. description,

  2050. this biblical

  2051. description of

  2052. what we are

  2053. before you

  2054. in our

  2055. natural state.

  2056. Lord,

  2057. help us

  2058. not to trip

  2059. over that,

  2060. for Lord,

  2061. even as we

  2062. try and

  2063. protect

  2064. ourselves

  2065. in some

  2066. semblance

  2067. of goodness,

  2068. we are

  2069. immediately

  2070. and radically

  2071. cutting back

  2072. and paring

  2073. back your

  2074. goodness and

  2075. your mercy

  2076. and your

  2077. grace.

  2078. Lord,

  2079. help us

  2080. to make

  2081. you really,

  2082. really big

  2083. in our

  2084. lives.

  2085. Your wisdom

  2086. in the

  2087. path of

  2088. salvation

  2089. you've set,

  2090. your kindness

  2091. and love to

  2092. us in the

  2093. Lord Jesus

  2094. Christ,

  2095. your commitment

  2096. to us in

  2097. following through

  2098. and making

  2099. sure we get

  2100. home to

  2101. heaven to be

  2102. with you,

  2103. not giving

  2104. us the

  2105. rains at

  2106. any point

  2107. Lord,

  2108. because you

  2109. know we'll

  2110. mess it up.

  2111. Lord,

  2112. help us

  2113. to make

  2114. you so

  2115. big and

  2116. ourselves so

  2117. small that

  2118. we just put

  2119. out our

  2120. hands,

  2121. empty hands

  2122. and say,

  2123. thank you

  2124. Lord,

  2125. help me to

  2126. live for you

  2127. this day,

  2128. in Jesus'

  2129. name,

  2130. Amen.
