  1. We're going to have the Bible reading now. I'll be reading from John chapter 10, verses 1 to 30.

    John 10:1–30

  2. John 10, 1 to 30.

  3. Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber.

  4. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

  5. To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

  6. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.

  7. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.

  8. This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

  9. So Jesus again said to them, truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

  10. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.

  11. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.

  12. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

  13. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

  14. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

  15. He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees,

  16. and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.

  17. He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

  18. I am the good shepherd.

  19. I know my own and my own know me, just as the father knows me and I know the father,

  20. and I lay my life down for the sheep.

  21. And I have other sheep that are not of this fold.

  22. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice.

  23. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.

  24. For this reason, the father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again.

  25. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.

  26. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again.

  27. This charge I received from my father.

  28. There was again a division among the Jews because of these words.

  29. Many of them said, He is a demon and is insane.

  30. Why listen to him?

  31. Others said, These are not words of the one who is oppressed by a demon.

  32. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?

  33. At that time, the feast of dedication took place at Jerusalem.

  34. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple in the colonnade of Solomon.

  35. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him,

  36. How long will you keep us in suspense?

  37. If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.

  38. Jesus answered them,

  39. I told you, and you do not believe.

  40. The works that I do in my father's name bear witness about me.

  41. But you do not believe, because you are not among my sheep.

  42. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

  43. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish,

  44. and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

  45. My father, who has given them to me, is greater than all,

  46. and no one is able to snatch them out of the father's hand.

  47. I and the father are one.

  48. Good morning, everyone.

  49. For those who are visitors, my name is David.

  50. I'm one of the pastors here.

  51. We're going to be looking at John chapter 10 this morning.

    John 10 chapter mention

  52. Sometimes you find yourself thinking you're committed to an idea,

  53. and you think you're committed to the idea

  54. because you think it's something we need,

  55. or something we want, or something we expect,

  56. or something we even demand.

  57. But then, when we actually experience the thing

  58. that we think we're committed to in reality,

  59. we actually quickly reject it

  60. and decide we don't like it at all.

  61. Let me give you an example.

  62. It's been happening over this past few days.

  63. So we want, we expect, we need,

  64. we demand our government keep us safe from COVID.

  65. That's their job.

  66. But when we experience that strong lead,

  67. when they exercise their jurisdiction, their power,

  68. to enforce an extended lockdown,

  69. to tell us to wear masks,

  70. to use a QR code to check into a venue,

  71. suddenly we feel the resentment rising up within us

  72. because, at the end of the day,

  73. we don't want them to use their power

  74. to control us individually.

  75. It cramps our lifestyle.

  76. So we think we want something,

  77. but we don't really want it when we experience it.

  78. I think it's the same sort of principle

  79. when we come to thinking about God's sovereign power.

  80. We believe that we need it,

  81. that we want it in our lives,

  82. we expect it,

  83. sometimes we even demand it.

  84. We particularly say when it comes to God's sovereign power

  85. and control in the world.

  86. We expect God to be in control.

  87. We expect him to use his power

  88. for good in the world.

  89. But again, you see,

  90. we quickly resent that sovereign power

  91. when we experience it in our own lives.

  92. And we quickly move to crying,

  93. that's not fair.

  94. Especially when that sovereign power

  95. impacts us in our lifestyle

  96. or in our personal life.

  97. So, for instance,

  98. it might be loss of health

  99. or the Lord bringing a circumstance to it

  100. that robs us of happiness.

  101. And we suddenly find ourselves saying,

  102. well, actually,

  103. no, I don't like God's sovereign power.

  104. It's unfair.

  105. It's unfair.

  106. I want you to bring that thought with you this morning

  107. as we move into John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  108. but I'll say more about it in a little while.

  109. Because this morning,

  110. we're continuing the series

  111. of exploring how we experience

  112. God's sovereign power in our salvation.

  113. And this morning,

  114. third in the series,

  115. we're going to be looking at

  116. Jesus as God's good shepherd

  117. who lays down his life

  118. for his sheep.

  119. Now, again,

  120. I want to ask you the question.

  121. We all know the phrase,

  122. God's good shepherd

  123. who lays down his life for the sheep.

  124. But the question I want to ask you now

  125. before we jump into the detail is,

  126. what sort of shepherd

  127. do you have in mind?

  128. Now, theoretically, I suspect,

  129. we want,

  130. we expect,

  131. we need

  132. a strong shepherd.

  133. A shepherd who will guide us.

  134. A shepherd who is capable

  135. of protecting us.

  136. A shepherd who wants to nurture us.

  137. Nurture us into the green pastures

  138. to follow the metaphor

  139. or what the Bible would call

  140. the good life.

  141. Isn't that what we want

  142. the shepherd to do?

  143. Well, perhaps at a theory level,

  144. but I think, again,

  145. when it comes to practicality,

  146. we actually

  147. are more likely to demand

  148. a shepherd

  149. who will actually just be happy

  150. to sit on the hillside

  151. and stay out of our lives

  152. and let us do

  153. what we want as sheep.

  154. Let us go where we want

  155. and do what we want

  156. and think what we want,

  157. but still be there

  158. to rescue us

  159. if we get ourselves

  160. in serious trouble.

  161. By definition,

  162. I think,

  163. a shepherd

  164. must have sovereign power

  165. over his sheep

  166. if you want to follow through

  167. the picture with me.

  168. Now,

  169. a good shepherd

  170. will exercise

  171. that sovereign power

  172. in love

  173. and mercy

  174. for the good of the sheep.

  175. But even then,

  176. we dig down into that.

  177. What will that look like?

  178. Well,

  179. at times,

  180. it will look like

  181. the shepherd up the front.

  182. Remember,

  183. this is picture language.

  184. Shepherd out the front

  185. saying,

  186. come on, sheep,

  187. follow me.

  188. I'm going to take you

  189. to good pastures.

  190. I'm going to take you

  191. to the place

  192. where you can thrive

  193. and enjoy the good life.

  194. But at times,

  195. the shepherd

  196. will need to be

  197. behind the sheep,

  198. giving them

  199. a good prod

  200. or a good thump

  201. because they're being difficult.

  202. They don't want to go

  203. where he knows

  204. they need to go.

  205. They want to go

  206. somewhere contrary.

  207. They want to do

  208. their own thing.

  209. And it's at that point

  210. the good shepherd

  211. becomes evident

  212. in how he

  213. masters his sheep.

  214. So,

  215. with those two thoughts,

  216. I'm just going to

  217. leave them in your mind

  218. for a minute

  219. and you'll see

  220. hopefully how they

  221. come with us

  222. and become relevant

  223. as we move into

  224. John 10.

  225. But before we do that,

  226. I just want to recap

  227. the series thus far.

  228. And we're saying

  229. that we really need

  230. God's sovereign grace

  231. in our lives

  232. individually

  233. if we're to be saved.

  234. Why?

  235. Because we saw

  236. two weeks ago,

  237. three weeks ago,

  238. that in our natural

  239. born state,

  240. we are spiritually

  241. dead towards God.

  242. That is,

  243. unable

  244. and unwilling

  245. to come to God.

  246. We're actually

  247. hardwired to rebel

  248. against God.

  249. We're under God's

  250. wrath and condemnation.

  251. It would be

  252. a terrible plight.

  253. It is a terrible plight.

  254. Except that then,

  255. God also said

  256. in Ephesians 2

  257. that God

  258. makes us alive

  259. in the Lord Jesus.

  260. God,

  261. in his love

  262. and mercy,

  263. acts sovereignly

  264. to call

  265. spiritually

  266. dead sinners

  267. to new life,

  268. to new relationship

  269. with him.

  270. and he does that,

  271. as we saw last week,

  272. both through

  273. what I call

  274. the outward call

  275. of actually hearing

  276. the gospel of Jesus

  277. and the inward call

  278. which is taking

  279. those words

  280. that we hear

  281. by the Holy Spirit

  282. and actually using

  283. those words

  284. to change us

  285. from the inside out,

  286. change our hearts,

  287. our minds,

  288. our desires,

  289. our attitudes

  290. so that we actually

  291. are able and willing

  292. to respond to Jesus

  293. and come to him.

  294. We need

  295. the sovereign power

  296. of God

  297. at work

  298. in our lives

  299. if we're to be saved.

  300. But it's more than that.

  301. God's justice

  302. demands that guilt,

  303. the guilt of sin

  304. cannot be ignored.

  305. So not only does God

  306. need to sovereignly

  307. call us to himself

  308. because otherwise

  309. we wouldn't come,

  310. but God needs to actually

  311. do something

  312. to deal with our sin,

  313. something that we

  314. couldn't do for ourselves.

  315. And God does that.

  316. He acts sovereignly

  317. to deal with our sins,

  318. clearing the way,

  319. therefore,

  320. to new acceptance

  321. and relationship

  322. with him.

  323. And in Bible language,

  324. God did this

  325. through what we call

  326. the atonement

  327. or the sacrificial

  328. substitutionary death

  329. of Jesus

  330. on the cross.

  331. The word is,

  332. another word we use

  333. is redemption.

  334. or in John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  335. the language is

  336. the good shepherd

  337. laying down his life

  338. for his sheep.

  339. So let's jump into

  340. John 10

  341. and explore the atonement

  342. or explore the redeeming

  343. work of Jesus

  344. under the metaphor

  345. of shepherd.

  346. I want to just ask

  347. three questions this morning

  348. to try and help us

  349. walk through this.

  350. And the first question

  351. is if you're following

  352. and if you've got

  353. one of these coming in the door,

  354. you can follow the outline

  355. of the sermon.

  356. First question is,

  357. what was God's intent

  358. for the good shepherd?

  359. What was God's intent

  360. for the good shepherd?

  361. Well, let's have a look

  362. at some of the verses

  363. in John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  364. Look at verse 18.

  365. No one takes it from me,

  366. but I lay down

  367. my life of my own accord.

  368. I have authority

  369. to lay it down

  370. and I have authority

  371. to take it up.

  372. Then this sentence,

  373. this charge

  374. I have received

  375. from my Father.

  376. And verse 30.

  377. Jesus says,

  378. I and the Father

  379. are one.

  380. Jesus is willingly

  381. working in partnership

  382. with his Father

  383. and in the light

  384. of his Father's purpose

  385. and salvation,

  386. which includes

  387. the atonement,

  388. which includes redemption,

  389. the good shepherd

  390. laying down his life

  391. for his sheep.

  392. Verse 9.

  393. Jesus says,

  394. I am the door.

  395. If anyone enters by me,

  396. he will be saved

  397. and will go in and out

  398. and find pasture.

  399. Jesus is the doorkeeper

  400. of heaven.

  401. And only his died-for sheep

  402. will be allowed in.

  403. But,

  404. once they're in,

  405. then they'll find pasture.

  406. That is,

  407. they'll be safe and secure.

  408. They'll thrive.

  409. They'll enjoy life.

  410. The good life

  411. for eternity.

  412. verses 14,

  413. 15,

  414. and 16.

  415. I am the good shepherd.

  416. I know my own

  417. and my own know me

  418. just as the Father knows me

  419. and I know the Father

  420. and I lay down my life

  421. for the sheep.

  422. Jesus has been given

  423. the responsibility

  424. of doing

  425. everything necessary

  426. to bring

  427. God's sheep

  428. back to himself,

  429. back to glory.

  430. And thus far,

  431. it's entirely consistent

  432. with what we saw

  433. back last week

  434. in John chapter 6,

    John 6:51

  435. verse 51,

  436. where Jesus said,

  437. again,

  438. a different metaphor.

  439. He's talking about

  440. being the bread of life

  441. in the passage

  442. in chapter 6.

  443. And Jesus says,

  444. the bread that I give,

  445. sorry,

  446. the bread that I will give

  447. for the life of the world

  448. is my flesh.

  449. Jesus' mission

  450. from heaven

  451. was to be

  452. God's

  453. life-giving bread

  454. to those

  455. in the world

  456. called by God.

  457. Now,

  458. step back

  459. from John chapter 10

    John 10 chapter mention

  460. or John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  461. This idea

  462. of Jesus being sent,

  463. Jesus on a mission,

  464. is so important

  465. to John

  466. that across his gospel,

  467. no less than

  468. 30 times

  469. does John

  470. put in the lips

  471. of Jesus

  472. or Jesus

  473. speaks

  474. and John records it

  475. is a better way

  476. of saying it,

  477. that he's been sent

  478. on a mission

  479. by the Father.

  480. He was sent

  481. into the world

  482. and the word

  483. world there

  484. is a theological

  485. description of the world.

  486. That is,

  487. the world of rebellion

  488. and sin

  489. in opposition to God.

  490. And he's been sent

  491. into the world

  492. to do what?

  493. To save

  494. God's sheep.

  495. Now,

  496. here's the point.

  497. The Father

  498. has a particular

  499. intent

  500. in sending

  501. Jesus

  502. into the world.

  503. So that means

  504. Jesus has

  505. a particular

  506. mission

  507. in the world.

  508. That is,

  509. as I've already said,

  510. to do

  511. everything required

  512. to deliver

  513. or save

  514. God's guilty,

  515. condemned,

  516. helpless sheep.

  517. Now,

  518. second question.

  519. For whom

  520. did the good shepherd

  521. lay down

  522. his life?

  523. In other words,

  524. who

  525. and what

  526. did Jesus

  527. have in mind

  528. when he died

  529. on the cross?

  530. Who

  531. and what

  532. did Jesus

  533. have in mind?

  534. Well,

  535. John 10

  536. gives a really

  537. clear answer.

  538. Who

  539. and what

  540. did Jesus

  541. have in mind

  542. when he died

  543. on the cross?

  544. He had

  545. his sheep.

  546. What

  547. did he have

  548. in mind?

  549. Their

  550. actual

  551. or particular

  552. redemption.

  553. Look

  554. at the

  555. verses.

  556. Verse 3.

  557. The

  558. sheep

  559. hear his

  560. voice

  561. and he

  562. calls

  563. his own

  564. sheep

  565. by name

  566. and leads

  567. them out.

  568. Now,

  569. in past

  570. life,

  571. I come

  572. off a

  573. farm

  574. and I

  575. can tell

  576. you

  577. that

  578. farmers

  579. did not

  580. know

  581. their

  582. sheep

  583. by

  584. name.

  585. Nor

  586. could

  587. they

  588. care

  589. less

  590. about

  591. individual

  592. preferences

  593. of their

  594. sheep.

  595. In a

  596. big spread

  597. with a

  598. big mob,

  599. you

  600. mastered

  601. them,

  602. and you

  603. were doing

  604. well if

  605. they were

  606. within 50

  607. or 60

  608. of what

  609. should have

  610. been there.

  611. You

  612. just lived

  613. with

  614. losses.

  615. That's

  616. life as a

  617. sheep

  618. farmer.

  619. But

  620. Jesus

  621. knows

  622. his

  623. sheep

  624. by name.

  625. Personal,

  626. individual,

  627. particular.

  628. Verse

  629. 11.

  630. Sorry,

  631. he knows

  632. them and

  633. they know

  634. him and

  635. will

  636. respond

  637. to

  638. him.

  639. Verse

  640. 11.

  641. I'm

  642. the

  643. good

  644. shepherd,

  645. says

  646. Jesus.

  647. The

  648. good

  649. shepherd

  650. lays

  651. down

  652. his

  653. life

  654. for

  655. the

  656. sheep.

  657. See

  658. how the

  659. two things

  660. are coming

  661. together?

  662. Jesus

  663. has a

  664. particular

  665. group

  666. of

  667. people

  668. in mind

  669. that are

  670. the focus

  671. of his

  672. mission,

  673. and it

  674. is for

  675. this

  676. particular

  677. group

  678. that

  679. Jesus

  680. will

  681. lay

  682. down

  683. his

  684. life

  685. in

  686. redemption.

  687. Verse

  688. 14 and

  689. 15.

  690. Same

  691. thing

  692. again.

  693. I'm the

  694. good

  695. shepherd.

  696. I know

  697. my own,

  698. and my own

  699. know me,

  700. just as the

  701. Father knows

  702. me, and I

  703. know the

  704. Father, and I

  705. lay down

  706. my life for

  707. the sheep.

  708. again, get

  709. the impact

  710. that Jesus

  711. knows those

  712. for whom he

  713. will lay

  714. down his

  715. life as

  716. distinctly,

  717. individually,

  718. and particularly

  719. as the

  720. Father knows

  721. him,

  722. Jesus.

  723. Verses

  724. 16,

  725. 17,

  726. and 18.

  727. And I

  728. have other

  729. sheep that

  730. are not of

  731. this fold,

  732. or this

  733. sheep pen.

  734. I must

  735. bring them

  736. also, and

  737. they will

  738. listen to

  739. my voice.

  740. So there

  741. will be

  742. one flock,

  743. one

  744. shepherd.

  745. For this

  746. reason, the

  747. Father loves

  748. me, because

  749. I lay

  750. down my

  751. life that

  752. I may

  753. take it

  754. up again.

  755. No one

  756. takes it

  757. from me, but

  758. I lay

  759. it down

  760. of my

  761. own

  762. accord.

  763. I have

  764. the

  765. authority to

  766. lay it

  767. down, and

  768. I have

  769. the authority

  770. to take

  771. it up

  772. again.

  773. Jesus'

  774. death will

  775. be the

  776. key act

  777. of

  778. mastering

  779. God's

  780. one

  781. flock, a

  782. flock made

  783. up of

  784. Jews,

  785. Jewish

  786. sheep, and

  787. Gentile

  788. sheep.

  789. But

  790. Jesus'

  791. death will

  792. be the

  793. mastering or

  794. the gathering

  795. of this

  796. one

  797. flock, the

  798. saving of

  799. this one

  800. flock, the

  801. collecting of

  802. specific

  803. individuals known

  804. to him, and

  805. who will in

  806. turn respond

  807. to him.

  808. Now, this

  809. flock is

  810. described in

  811. other parts of

  812. the Bible as

  813. the church, the

  814. bride of

  815. Christ, or

  816. the elect.

  817. Verses

  818. 26 and

  819. 27.

  820. You do

  821. not believe,

  822. remember he's

  823. speaking to the

  824. Jewish religious

  825. leaders here

  826. particularly, but

  827. he's actually

  828. speaking to a

  829. bigger crowd.

  830. he says, but

  831. you do not

  832. believe because

  833. you're not

  834. part of my

  835. flock.

  836. Again, we

  837. see the

  838. parameters and

  839. the delineations.

  840. Clearly, not

  841. all people

  842. belong to the

  843. shepherd.

  844. Clearly, the

  845. shepherd is not

  846. dying for all

  847. people.

  848. The fact that

  849. the Jews and

  850. the Jewish

  851. religious leaders

  852. as a whole

  853. refused to

  854. believe in

  855. Jesus was

  856. confirmation that

  857. they're not

  858. part of the

  859. flock.

  860. They're not

  861. part of his

  862. sheep.

  863. They're not

  864. the focus of

  865. his mission.

  866. 27 to

  867. 30.

  868. Jesus

  869. affirms the

  870. particularity of

  871. his intention in

  872. his forthcoming

  873. death.

  874. father and

  875. son working in

  876. an inseparable

  877. partnership of

  878. absolute sovereign

  879. power to

  880. gather the

  881. sheep, to

  882. bring them into

  883. the sheep pen,

  884. and to secure

  885. them forever.

  886. God's intent,

  887. Jesus' mission.

  888. Friends, hopefully

  889. you don't think I've

  890. labored that too

  891. much, but I

  892. did mean to

  893. labor it.

  894. because here's

  895. the point.

  896. The Bible never

  897. speaks of Jesus

  898. dying simply to

  899. make salvation

  900. possible.

  901. The Bible never

  902. speaks of Jesus

  903. just sort of

  904. putting it on the

  905. table and saying,

  906. well, look, here's a

  907. great opportunity for

  908. anybody who will

  909. avail themselves of

  910. it.

  911. But you need to

  912. decide for yourselves

  913. whether you want to

  914. embrace the benefits of

  915. my death, says Jesus,

  916. or not.

  917. It's up to you.

  918. No, the Bible

  919. doesn't speak about

  920. that.

  921. The Bible doesn't

  922. speak like that.

  923. The Bible always

  924. speaks about Jesus

  925. dying to save or

  926. secure the

  927. salvation of his

  928. sheep, his

  929. people.

  930. So, may I

  931. suggest that

  932. particular, the

  933. word particular,

  934. and I'm using a

  935. theological term

  936. now, the word

  937. particular is an

  938. important description

  939. of redemption and

  940. atonement.

  941. So, we talk about

  942. particular redemption

  943. or particular

  944. atonement.

  945. Now, here's the

  946. practical issue

  947. here.

  948. When it comes to

  949. redemption or

  950. atonement, all

  951. Christians agree

  952. about the necessity

  953. of God's sovereign

  954. power for

  955. redemption through

  956. the atoning death

  957. of Jesus.

  958. All Christians

  959. believe that that's

  960. necessary to deal

  961. with sin, to

  962. restore relationship

  963. with God.

  964. But apparent

  965. unity quickly

  966. vanishes because

  967. many Christians,

  968. and might I say

  969. this morning, most

  970. evangelicals, find

  971. it impossible to

  972. accept that Jesus

  973. died for a definite

  974. or particular group

  975. of sinners.

  976. sinners.

  977. Instead, they

  978. believe that

  979. Christ's sacrificial

  980. death made it

  981. possible for

  982. everyone in the

  983. world to be

  984. saved, but

  985. doesn't directly

  986. save anyone.

  987. What's required

  988. then for the

  989. benefit for the

  990. Christ's death to

  991. be effective in the

  992. life of an

  993. individual is for

  994. that individual to

  995. decide to respond.

  996. using their own

  997. faith to embrace

  998. what Jesus has

  999. done in his

  1000. death.

  1001. And so I

  1002. argue with you

  1003. this morning, or

  1004. present to you

  1005. this morning, the

  1006. proposal, that that

  1007. is why the term

  1008. particular redemption

  1009. or particular

  1010. atonement is a

  1011. really important and

  1012. indeed helpful

  1013. term.

  1014. It helps us to

  1015. speak with the

  1016. same precision as

  1017. the Bible speaks.

  1018. It avoids

  1019. diminishing Christ's

  1020. sovereign power and

  1021. salvation by

  1022. thinking that Jesus

  1023. died simply in the

  1024. hope that some

  1025. would respond and

  1026. make use of that

  1027. which he's put on

  1028. the table for

  1029. them.

  1030. that would

  1031. diminish the

  1032. effectiveness of

  1033. Christ's death.

  1034. And it also

  1035. avoids diminishing

  1036. Christ's sovereign

  1037. power and salvation

  1038. by suggesting that

  1039. the quality or

  1040. sufficiency of

  1041. Christ's sacrificial

  1042. death is somehow

  1043. limited.

  1044. No, the quality of

  1045. Christ's death is

  1046. without limit.

  1047. it is a perfect

  1048. sacrifice.

  1049. Well, he'll

  1050. save anybody.

  1051. But what's

  1052. particular is God's

  1053. design, God's

  1054. intention in

  1055. salvation.

  1056. It's that that's

  1057. limited or

  1058. particular to his

  1059. chosen sheep.

  1060. So, at this point

  1061. then I need to

  1062. address an

  1063. objection.

  1064. What about all

  1065. those verses that

  1066. speak of Christ's

  1067. death as being

  1068. for the world

  1069. and for all?

  1070. And I've given

  1071. you three or

  1072. four of the most

  1073. common ones

  1074. referred to in

  1075. this objection.

  1076. Well, lots

  1077. could be said

  1078. about this and

  1079. so I'm giving you

  1080. a very, very

  1081. summary form.

  1082. Hopefully it's

  1083. not a trivialized

  1084. response but it

1085. is going to be a

  1086. brief summary

  1087. response.

  1088. And I would say

  1089. this, that a

  1090. careful study of

  1091. these words in

  1092. their context

  1093. shows that the

  1094. first impression

  1095. of what they

  1096. mean is not

  1097. correct.

  1098. In context,

  1099. when you read

  1100. the word all

  1101. or the whole

  1102. world, it

  1103. never means all

  1104. people or the

  1105. whole of humanity

  1106. without exception.

  1107. Context will

  1108. show that fairly

  1109. easily, I

  1110. believe.

  1111. Now, sometimes

  1112. all or the

  1113. world actually

  1114. means all types

  1115. of people

  1116. regardless of

  1117. their social,

  1118. political, or

  1119. economic

  1120. circumstances.

  1121. That is, Christ

  1122. died for all

  1123. types of people.

  1124. And those

  1125. sorts of verses

  1126. are sometimes

  1127. emphasized against,

  1128. say, that the

  1129. narrow thinking of

  1130. the religious

  1131. Jews who

  1132. thought, well,

  1133. Jesus only died

  1134. for Jewish

  1135. people or

  1136. good people.

  1137. Sometimes, all

  1138. or the world

  1139. emphasizes the

  1140. fact that there

  1141. is no limit to

  1142. the power of

  1143. Christ's death to

  1144. forgive.

  1145. And so, it's

  1146. used to affirm

  1147. the genuine

  1148. offer of the

  1149. gospel to any

  1150. sinner in any

  1151. circumstance, in

  1152. any generation, in

  1153. any part of our

  1154. world.

  1155. The offer of the

  1156. gospel is the

  1157. same.

  1158. The outward

  1159. call of God is

  1160. the same.

  1161. And sometimes

  1162. all and the

  1163. world is used

  1164. in a theologically

  1165. defined context.

  1166. That is, it

  1167. emphasizes the

  1168. cosmic significance

  1169. of Christ's death.

  1170. sin had a

  1171. cosmic significance

  1172. in God's

  1173. creation.

  1174. Christ's death

  1175. has an

  1176. equal cosmic

  1177. significance

  1178. in undoing the

  1179. effects of sin

  1180. and restoring

  1181. God's creation.

  1182. It's right to

  1183. say that

  1184. Christ's death

  1185. is for the

  1186. world because

  1187. the world

  1188. theologically

  1189. represents the

  1190. kingdom of

  1191. Satan, the

  1192. kingdom in

  1193. rebellion against

  1194. God.

  1195. And Christ's

  1196. death is

  1197. powerful and

  1198. significant at

  1199. that same level

  1200. as he reconciles

  1201. the universe to

  1202. himself.

  1203. Now, I just

  1204. want to illustrate

  1205. that touched

  1206. down in 1 John

    1 John 2:2

  1207. chapter 2,

  1208. verse 2.

  1209. So, if you

  1210. want to open

  1211. your Bible to

  1212. that, then I

  1213. just want to

  1214. take a couple

  1215. of minutes and

  1216. touch down on

  1217. one of these

  1218. verses.

  1219. Probably the

  1220. verses that

  1221. people would

  1222. go to most

  1223. commonly and

  1224. it's the

  1225. verse that

  1226. most, I

  1227. think, would

  1228. think was a

  1229. king hit to

  1230. this notion of

  1231. particular

  1232. redemption.

  1233. 1 John

    1 John 2:2

  1234. chapter 2,

  1235. verse 2.

  1236. Well, I'll

  1237. read the first

  1238. three verses,

  1239. the first two

  1240. verses.

  1241. John says,

  1242. My little

  1243. children, I'm

  1244. writing these

  1245. things to you so

  1246. that you may

  1247. not sin, but

  1248. if anyone does

  1249. sin, we have an

  1250. advocate with the

  1251. father, Jesus

  1252. Christ the

  1253. righteous.

  1254. He is the

  1255. propitiation for

  1256. our sins and

  1257. not for ours

  1258. only, but also

  1259. for the sins of

  1260. the whole world.

  1261. But also for the

  1262. sins of the

  1263. whole world.

  1264. Now, it seems

  1265. to be there that

  1266. Christ dies for

  1267. all people without

  1268. exception.

  1269. salvation.

  1270. But when you

  1271. look at the

  1272. context of

  1273. that verse, and

  1274. the context is

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  1275. chapter 1, then

  1276. quite a different

  1277. perspective pops

  1278. up.

  1279. As I say, chapter

  1280. 1 is the

  1281. context.

  1282. I don't have

  1283. time to get into

  1284. it in detail.

  1285. You can do it

  1286. for yourself.

  1287. John in

  1288. chapter 1 is

  1289. bursting with

  1290. excitement about

  1291. the eternal

  1292. fellowship or

  1293. salvation.

  1294. that is now

  1295. enjoyed by

  1296. those who

  1297. have come to

  1298. know and

  1299. experience the

  1300. word of life,

  1301. the Lord Jesus

  1302. Christ.

  1303. And he's

  1304. bursting with

  1305. excitement,

  1306. especially given

  1307. that these new

  1308. Christians are

  1309. struggling on a

  1310. daily basis with

  1311. ongoing sin and

  1312. failure in their

  1313. lives.

  1314. Christians.

  1315. And into that

  1316. situation, there's

  1317. been some

  1318. heresies thrown

  1319. in, some ways of

  1320. trying to reconcile

  1321. that.

1322. And so if you look

  1323. at chapter 1, you'll

  1324. see in verse 6,

  1325. three things, three

  1326. options that people

  1327. have been given by

  1328. locals.

  1329. Verse 6, if we

  1330. say, verse 8, if

  1331. we say, verse 10,

  1332. if we say.

1333. So what it means in

  1334. short form is that

  1335. some were encouraging

  1336. the Christians to

1337. play down or find a

  1338. way to reduce the

  1339. notion of sin so

  1340. they could live

  1341. comfortably and not

  1342. be worried about

  1343. their daily failures

  1344. and sin.

  1345. And John says to

  1346. them, no, no, no,

  1347. that's not the way

  1348. to go at all.

  1349. One, it's not right,

  1350. but two, it's not

  1351. the way to go.

  1352. What you should do,

  1353. moving into chapter 2,

1354. is not try and find a

  1355. way to play down

  1356. your sin, but look

1357. to Jesus and play up

  1358. what he's done for

  1359. you in redemption.

1360. Sin is a reality for

1361. us as we move on in

  1362. our Christian life.

  1363. It's a daily struggle,

  1364. John's really saying.

  1365. And John's urging

  1366. believers not to

  1367. attempt to play down

  1368. the reality of

  1369. ongoing sin, but to

  1370. take comfort in

  1371. Christ.

  1372. Totally confident

  1373. that his propitiation

  1374. or that word just

  1375. means atoning

  1376. sacrifice, has dealt

1377. with all the sins of

  1378. his people, including

  1379. past and future

  1380. sins.

  1381. So John's just

  1382. making a gospel

  1383. statement of comfort

  1384. and encouragement to

  1385. these Christians.

  1386. Christians.

  1387. And John reassures

  1388. these Christians with

  1389. all the warmth, the

  1390. authority, and comfort

  1391. of a father, speaking

  1392. to them as little

  1393. children.

  1394. He said, look, this

  1395. includes you in your

  1396. daily struggle with

  1397. sin.

1398. So to put it all

  1399. together, John's saying

  1400. this, the salvation that

  1401. comes through Jesus'

  1402. death is not restricted

  1403. to the immediate circle

  1404. of disciples who had

  1405. actually seen, heard,

  1406. and touched Jesus.

  1407. That's where John

  1408. started his letter.

  1409. He's so excited because

1410. he had seen, heard, and

  1411. touched.

  1412. Well, John says, well,

  1413. yeah, that's true.

  1414. But the benefits of

  1415. Christ's death aren't

  1416. restricted to that

  1417. group.

  1418. Nor are they restricted

  1419. to those who are

  1420. Jewish and who had

  1421. been converted through

  1422. the apostles, something

  1423. that John also speak

  1424. about.

  1425. Rather, says John, it

  1426. is equally real for

  1427. all Christians.

  1428. Any Christian, anyone

  1429. who has come into

  1430. union with Christ, has

  1431. this assurance that the

  1432. atoning death of Christ

  1433. has actually dealt with

1434. their sins once for all.

  1435. Any nationality, any

1436. part of the world, any

1437. period of history has been

  1438. covered.

  1439. If you've come into

  1440. union with Christ, you're

1441. covered by the death of

  1442. Christ.

  1443. Now, again, there's lots

1444. more to be said on that

1445. and those of you who may

1446. differ from me may well

  1447. be thinking, no, that's

  1448. not fair.

  1449. But, anyway, that's an

1450. attempt to be fair in the

1451. dealing with that and I

1452. can talk to you later or

1453. you can talk to me.

  1454. Third question, and we're

1455. not far from being done

  1456. now.

1457. Did the good shepherd get

  1458. what he paid for?

1459. Well, go back to John

    John 10 chapter mention

1460. chapter 10 now and look

  1461. again at verses 28 to 30

  1462. and the answer, we've

  1463. already read that out.

  1464. I won't read it again.

  1465. The answer is obviously

  1466. yes.

1467. And it has to be yes

1468. because the father in his

  1469. salvation plan entrusted to

1470. Jesus a great number to be

  1471. saved.

  1472. Father's intent, the son's

  1473. mission.

1474. And since he sent Jesus

1475. into the world to secure

  1476. their salvation and master

1477. the flock, the flock we call

1478. the church, then this is

  1479. precisely what will happen.

  1480. Friends, it's inconceivable

1481. that God the father in his

1482. intent and God the son in his

  1483. execution or mission, that

1484. those two would fail or that

1485. somehow or other would get out

1486. of sync with each other.

1487. Both the cost of salvation

1488. and the return on the

  1489. investment, God's investment

  1490. in salvation, was calculated

  1491. precisely by the father.

  1492. The cost was enormous.

1493. The life is on precious son.

1494. But the return on his

  1495. investment was also enormous.

1496. Every one of his guilty,

  1497. spiritually dead sheep would

  1498. be saved.

1499. That is, moved from spiritual

1500. deadness to spiritual life and

  1501. vitality for eternity.

  1502. It must be yes.

1503. Jesus did get what he died for

  1504. because logic demands it.

  1505. God's death.

1506. The doctrine of total inability,

1507. total depravity of all people,

1508. the doctrine of God's sovereign

  1509. irresistible call of God's

  1510. chosen sheep to life,

1511. demands the next step of God's

1512. sovereign power in our lives.

  1513. That is, particular redemption.

1514. God's determined that one dead

1515. sheep should be brought to life.

1516. God calls that sheep to life.

1517. The sin of that sheep must be

  1518. dealt with in particular

1519. redemption as Jesus dies for

  1520. that particular sheep.

1521. God determines that not only,

1522. sorry, God determines not only

1523. that a great number of

1524. spiritually dead people will be

1525. made alive, but he also makes

  1526. it happen.

1527. He makes it happen by the

1528. sovereign power of his Holy

1529. Spirit renewing a person from

1530. the inside out and creating

1531. those responses that would bring

  1532. a person to Jesus.

1533. And he does it by dealing with a

  1534. sin that's a barrier to your

  1535. renewed relationship.

1536. God's process from start to finish.

1537. It's particular in its view going

  1538. forward.

1539. It's particular in its application.

  1540. It's legally binding and it's

  1541. eternal in nature.

1542. And it results in abundant life.

1543. Now friends, as usual, there's

1544. lots more that could be said

1545. and perhaps lots more that

  1546. should be said.

1547. But just let me conclude the

1548. last couple of minutes by asking

  1549. this question.

1550. Does it matter practically to

  1551. talk about particular redemption?

1552. The answer is yes, it does.

1553. It's enormously beneficial in the

  1554. area of assurance.

1555. If you know anything of your

1556. sinful heart and realize that at

1557. one time you were dead, spiritually

1558. dead, in response or in respect of

1559. God, in terms of relationship with

1560. God, if you know that where you've

1561. come from, then it's lovely looking

1562. forward to know that your security,

1563. eternal security, is not rest on

1564. yourself and what you've done, but

1565. rest entirely on what Jesus has done

1566. for you and has done in you and

1567. continues to do in you.

1568. And this in turn will mean that the

1569. Father and Jesus are worthy of all

  1570. our praise.

1571. So let me speak personally to you.

  1572. If you're a Christian here this

  1573. morning, you've already experienced

1574. God's absolute sovereignty in your

  1575. salvation.

1576. The sovereign power of God took hold

1577. of you when you were spiritually dead

1578. and couldn't have cared less about

  1579. God.

1580. The renewing power of the Holy

1581. Spirit changed your heart and mind

1582. and desire so you responded to God's

1583. irresistible call to come to him for a

1584. new life and new security.

1585. And Jesus has died specifically for

  1586. your sin.

1587. So your relationship with God has been

  1588. restored.

1589. Now go back to my very opening point.

1590. What's not to like about that?

1591. That's one of those things we long for.

  1592. We need.

1593. We need God's sovereign power in our

  1594. lives.

1595. And here when we see God's sovereign

1596. power in our life, it's such a

  1597. beautiful thing.

1598. And likewise, your friends and family

1599. and neighbors and workmates, they too

1600. are in a spiritual state of deadness

  1601. towards God.

  1602. And you know what?

1603. As the Bible says, they don't even

  1604. know it.

1605. They too need more than just the

1606. possibility of salvation made available

  1607. to them.

1608. They too need more than just an

1609. opportunity for salvation provided by

1610. Jesus and left conveniently on a table

1611. saying, well, look, here it is.

1612. You know, just make use of it if you

  1613. want to.

1614. They need God's sovereign power to do

1615. for them and do in them exactly what

1616. he's done for you and in you.

1617. That which they could never do for

  1618. themselves.

1619. They need the good shepherd to rescue,

  1620. restore,

1621. keep and lead them into green pastures.

1622. And isn't it just wonderful to know

1623. that that's precisely the description

1624. of Jesus and precisely his intent

  1625. for his sheep.

  1626. Let me pray.

1627. Lord, help us not to stumble over your

  1628. sovereign power.

1629. Quite possibly, Lord, the point of

1630. stumbling for each of us is that our

1631. own sense of sovereignty gets in the

  1632. way of your sovereignty.

1633. And Lord, quite honestly, we

1634. pontificate and we cry unfair and we

1635. raise all sorts of objections from a

1636. point of view of great limitation in our

1637. understanding of your plan and your

  1638. purpose and your character.

1639. Help us, Lord, to hang on to that which

  1640. you say.

1641. That you have chosen to act in a particular

1642. way in salvation in our universe for your

  1643. own glory.

1644. To show people that you're a loving,

1645. merciful and good God who wants a vast

  1646. multitude to be saved.

1647. Even those who deserve nothing but condemnation.

1648. Help us, Lord, not to trip over that as

  1649. something abhorrent or unfair.

1650. But help us to see something of your beauty

1651. and your wonder and just to be amazed that

1652. you have deigned to operate in your world in

  1653. this way.

1654. And help us individually, Lord, to respond to

1655. you as the one who is all goodness, all mercy,

  1656. all grace.

1657. In Jesus' name I pray.

  1658. Amen.

  1659. Amen.
