  1. And we're reading Ephesians chapter 1 and verses 1 to 14.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  2. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,

  3. to the saints who are in Ephesus and are faithful in Christ Jesus,

  4. grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  5. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  6. who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,

  7. even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world,

  8. that we should be holy and blameless before him.

  9. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ,

  10. according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace,

  11. with which he has blessed us in the beloved.

  12. In him we have redemption through his blood,

  13. the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

  14. which he lavished upon us in all wisdom and insight,

  15. making known to us the mystery of his will,

  16. according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ

  17. as a plan for the fullness of time,

  18. to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

  19. In him we have obtained an inheritance,

  20. having been predestined according to the purpose of him

  21. who works all things according to the counsel of his will,

  22. so that we who were the first to hope in Christ

  23. might be to the praise of his glory.

  24. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth,

  25. the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him,

  26. were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,

  27. who is the guarantee of our inheritance,

  28. until we acquire possession of it,

  29. to the praise of his glory.

  30. Well, good morning, everyone.

  31. Why don't we pray as we come to God's word?

  32. Lord, we praise you for your nature,

  33. that you tell us that a bruised reed you will not break

  34. and a smouldering wick you will not snuff out.

  35. Lord, we thank you for your gentleness and your patience with us

  36. when we struggle to be sure that we are even a Christian.

  37. Thank you that you are for us in your gentle nature.

  38. Please reassure our hearts this morning by your word.

  39. In his name, amen.

  40. Amen.

  41. Well, one of the lovely images that the Lord gives us

  42. so that we can have confidence that we will receive a warm welcome into heaven

  43. is that of a heavenly book, a book.

  44. I'm not sure if you're into books or not,

  45. but this book you will be into.

  46. It's called the Book of Life,

  47. with each and every name listed of those

  48. who are going to receive a warm welcome into heaven.

  49. One place we see this book appear is in Revelation 20 at the Last Judgment,

  50. the picture of the Last Judgment,

  51. where each individual person has their own book,

  52. a record of everything they've done.

  53. Now, that is a terrifying thought,

  54. but then onto the scene comes this other book,

  55. the Book of the Lamb who was slain.

  56. And it's those who are written in that book,

  57. not their own book of what they've done,

  58. but the Lamb's book.

  59. They're the ones who have the warm welcome into heaven.

  60. It's a very personal image, this book.

  61. Your name is written.

  62. And it's a permanent image.

  63. You don't write something down to forget it.

  64. It's to remember it.

  65. It's permanent.

  66. It is written there.

  67. For all those who put their hope in Christ,

  68. the Lord reassures our hearts that your name,

  69. my name is written in this book of life.

  70. Now, this divine guarantee of salvation

  71. is what our series in the Doctrins of Grace has been about, really.

  72. The Lord wants us to be secure in his arms.

  73. Now, just to recap the series,

  74. because in a sense we're kind of finished

  75. the Doctrins of Grace.

  76. There's an acronym to remember the five points,

  77. the five doctrines.

  78. It's called CHULIP.

  79. So you might want to write this down

  80. if you haven't heard this before.

  81. So like the flower, CHULIP,

  82. let's quickly run through what we've covered so far.

  83. So it's not the order we did it in in our series,

  84. but here goes.

  85. So T.

  86. Actually, let's get some audience participation.

  87. Can anyone tell me?

  88. What's T?

  89. Total depravity,

  90. or another name is total inability.

  91. That, you know,

  92. born in Adam,

  93. we are dead towards God,

  94. Ephesians 2.

  95. It's not total depravity

  96. in the sense of

  97. we're as evil as we possibly could be,

  98. but it's total in the sense

  99. that sin has infected us

  100. in every faculty,

  101. in our mind,

  102. in our desires,

  103. in our abilities.

  104. In and of ourselves,

  105. we're unable to want God

  106. and seek God.

  107. Okay, you.

  108. What's you?

  109. Anyone?

  110. Heard these before?

  111. Joel?

  112. Help.

  113. Unconditional election.

  114. Unconditional election,

  115. what we looked at last week.

  116. The only election that matters.

  117. The only election.

  118. Yeah.

  119. Thanks for that political comment.

  120. The only election that matters.

  121. In eternity past,

  122. the Father chose,

  123. by his mercy alone,

  124. those sinners

  125. he would adopt as his sons.

  126. Unconditional.

  127. Nothing in and of ourselves

  128. did he look at us and go,

  129. you're worthy of my choosing.

  130. It's not about that.

  131. It's unconditional.

  132. It's his mercy alone.

  133. Okay, L.

  134. Limited atonement.

  135. Another name for it

  136. is particular redemption.

  137. So,

  138. it's not that Jesus died for the whole world

  139. and goes,

  140. whoever wants to take up my offer,

  141. come and get it.

  142. It's that God,

  143. the Father,

  144. sent Jesus into the world

  145. with a particular mission

  146. to save his people.

  147. And he did it.

  148. He actually redeemed.

  149. He didn't just make it possible.

  150. He saved his sheep.

  151. He died for his sheep.

  152. Okay, I.

  153. Irresistible grace.

  154. While we're still dead towards God,

  155. God intervenes.

  156. The Holy Spirit works inside us

  157. to make the gospel message

  158. effective in our hearts,

  159. making us new on the inside,

  160. opening our blind spiritual eyes

  161. to see Christ

  162. and so put our trust in him.

  163. It's irresistible.

  164. The Holy Spirit just go,

  165. just makes us want

  166. to put our trust in Christ.

  167. Okay, last one, P.

  168. Yeah, so,

  169. perseverance of the saints

  170. or better still,

  171. as Don said,

  172. preservation of the saints.

  173. That God is working,

  174. is totally committed

  175. to finishing what he starts.

  176. He's working in us

  177. to keep us for heaven

  178. and therefore,

  179. we're going to persevere

  180. because God is working

  181. to get us home.

  182. So these are beautiful truths.

  183. Some start to finish.

  184. Our salvation is resting

  185. in the sovereign grace of God,

  186. the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  187. It's a free and utter gift.

  188. It's all him.

  189. So, in a sense,

  190. we kind of finished our series,

  191. but there are some common questions

  192. that come up

  193. to do with God's sovereignty

  194. and salvation.

  195. And we just didn't have time

  196. in each of the sermons

  197. to deal with these

  198. important questions properly.

  199. So, we're going to change gear a bit

  200. and try and address

  201. four of these common questions.

  202. And those questions

  203. that we're going to cover

  204. over the next four weeks are,

  205. can I be sure

  206. I'm one of God's elect?

  207. We're going to do that one today.

  208. And then,

  209. can a Christian lose their salvation?

  210. Does predestination mean

  211. that evangelism and prayer

  212. are pointless?

  213. And do the doctrines of grace

  214. really matter in 2021?

  215. Like, can't we just

  216. put them to the side?

  217. Do they really matter?

  218. Okay.

  219. So, that's where we're going.

  220. So, it's a bit different

  221. in these next four weeks,

  222. but let's get into the first one.

  223. Can I be sure

  224. I am one of God's elect?

  225. There was this one wedding

  226. where Emma and I

  227. and some friends

  228. we thought were invited to.

  229. Emma and I

  230. weren't as confident,

  231. but our friends

  232. weren't sure

  233. if they were invited or not.

  234. So, they went to the reception

  235. before the bridal party arrived

  236. and they went up to that list

  237. of table place names

  238. and checked out

  239. is their name there?

  240. No, it wasn't.

  241. So, they rushed out again.

  242. I tell that

  243. because I imagine

  244. when I talked about

  245. this book in heaven,

  246. those who are asking

  247. this question

  248. at a personal level

  249. this morning,

  250. can I be sure

  251. I am one of God's elect?

  252. Are probably feeling like

  253. those friends

  254. who went to the wedding reception

  255. going,

  256. I really don't think

  257. my name's going to be there.

  258. This is a very personal question.

  259. It is an agonising question

  260. to wrestle with.

  261. It's a restless place to live.

  262. You're stuck between

  263. the beauty of the gospel

  264. that God is absolutely

  265. sovereign in salvation

  266. and yet you're also,

  267. but then you think

  268. God is angry at you

  269. because of your sin.

  270. The very one you want to rest in

  271. is the one who's angry

  272. at your sin

  273. and you're just stuck in between.

  274. Which one is it?

  275. Amen.

  276. Now,

  277. I want to say from the outset

  278. that I do not expect

  279. this sermon

  280. to be a quick fix.

  281. It could even be dangerous

  282. because if in tomorrow

  283. or during the week

  284. you wake up in despair again,

  285. you might think,

  286. well,

  287. that didn't help.

  288. I'm even more stuck.

  289. What do I do now?

  290. I don't expect this sermon

  291. to be a quick fix.

  292. Unlike what Simon says,

  293. I don't have all the answers.

  294. But I do want to hopefully

  295. give you some tools

  296. to go away with.

  297. Some new perspectives

  298. that you can keep preaching

  299. to yourself

  300. whenever this fear arises

  301. within you.

  302. So the five perspectives

  303. I want to touch on this morning,

  304. you'll see it in the outline.

  305. The first one has to do

  306. when it comes to passages

  307. in the Bible

  308. that seem to question

  309. our security of salvation.

  310. So,

  311. when you come to those,

  312. we need to be asking ourselves,

  313. am I sure

  314. that this is what God

  315. is saying here?

  316. The second thing

  317. you need to keep asking yourself

  318. is when doubt arises,

  319. doubt your doubt.

  320. Ask questions of your doubt.

  321. Why are you doubting?

  322. The third is,

  323. is this even a good question

  324. to be asking?

  325. What is God's question of you?

  326. The fourth perspective is,

  327. when you look inside yourself

  328. and you see the muck

  329. of your sin,

  330. don't live there.

  331. You need an external

  332. reference point.

  333. You need to look to Christ.

  334. And the last one is,

  335. don't dwell on yourself,

  336. dwell on what God has done.

  337. So,

  338. let's just go through

  339. each of these

  340. one at a time.

  341. Okay,

  342. what about those troubling texts?

  343. Am I sure

  344. that I've understood

  345. the text correctly?

  346. So,

  347. we're going to use

  348. 2 Peter 1.10

  349. as a case study.

  350. We don't have time

  351. to go to the text

  352. that can really trouble people.

  353. But 2 Peter 1.10,

  354. gee,

  355. that's it.

  356. This one's,

  357. this one's up there

  358. as one that troubles people.

  359. Could you turn there

  360. with me actually

  361. because we'll spend

  362. a few minutes here.

  363. So,

  364. 2 Peter 1.

  365. And we'll come back

  366. to Ephesians

  367. towards the end.

  368. So,

  369. here's 2 Peter 1.10

  370. and I'll read

  371. verse 11 as well.

  372. Therefore,

  373. brothers,

  374. be all the more

  375. diligent

  376. to confirm

  377. your calling

  378. and election.

  379. For if you practice

  380. these qualities,

  381. you will never fall.

  382. For in this way,

  383. there will be

  384. richly provided

  385. for you

  386. an entrance

  387. into the eternal

  388. kingdom

  389. of our Lord

  390. and Saviour

  391. Jesus Christ.

  392. So,

  393. it's talking about

  394. an entrance

  395. and falling

  396. and it's saying

  397. be diligent

  398. to confirm

  399. your calling

  400. and election.

  401. now,

  402. if you read

  403. that,

  404. it just jumps

  405. out at you

  406. and it

  407. sounds like

  408. you must

  409. confirm it.

  410. It's up to you.

  411. If you've got

  412. to be diligent

  413. to confirm it,

  414. then it mustn't

  415. be settled.

  416. If I don't,

  417. then I fall

  418. and not enter

  419. the eternal kingdom.

  420. And you think,

  421. okay,

  422. what are these

  423. qualities I'm

  424. meant to be

  425. putting into

  426. practice?

  427. And you go

  428. back and read,

  429. supplement your

  430. faith with

  431. virtue and

  432. virtue with

  433. knowledge and

  434. knowledge with

  435. self-control and

  436. self-control with

  437. steadfastness and

  438. steadfastness with

  439. godliness and

  440. godliness with

  441. brotherly affection and

  442. brotherly affection with

  443. love.

  444. And that list just

  445. hits you hard,

  446. doesn't it?

  447. Virtue?

  448. I can list a

  449. dozen things I've

  450. stuffed up this

  451. week or today

  452. alone.

  453. And then

  454. knowledge.

  455. I don't read the

  456. Bible as much as

  457. I want to.

  458. Self-control,

  459. my lust,

  460. my impatience,

  461. my anger,

  462. steadfastness.

  463. I waver in and

  464. out of faith all

  465. the time.

  466. Godliness,

  467. brotherly affection.

  468. That list just

  469. hits you.

  470. You come to the

  471. conclusion,

  472. I must be

  473. failing the test.

  474. Maybe I'm not

  475. elect.

  476. When a passage has

  477. this effect on you,

  478. the emotions just

  479. are strong.

  480. They're very

  481. strong.

  482. Those strong

  483. emotions I think

  484. can make you think

  485. you've interpreted

  486. it correctly but

  487. can I encourage you

  488. to pause,

  489. take a deep

  490. breath,

  491. maybe even get

  492. the help of

  493. another believer

  494. and make sure

  495. you've understood

  496. what God is

  497. saying correctly.

  498. slowly.

  499. Slow down

  500. and re-read.

  501. Look at the

  502. details.

  503. Let's do that

  504. together.

  505. I'm not going to

  506. leave you hanging.

  507. Let's do that

  508. together in this

  509. case.

  510. firstly, look at

  511. verse 5,

  512. the start of this

  513. little section.

  514. It starts with

  515. for this very

  516. reason.

  517. For this very

  518. reason,

  519. it goes on to

  520. say,

  521. confirm your

  522. calling in

  523. election.

  524. So it should

  525. indicate,

  526. well,

  527. what's the

  528. reason?

  529. Where's this

  530. coming from?

  531. So let's

  532. go back.

  533. Verses 1 and

  534. 2.

  535. To those who

  536. have obtained

  537. a faith of

  538. equal standing

  539. with ours by

  540. the righteousness

  541. of our God

  542. and Saviour

  543. Jesus Christ.

  544. Now we

  545. elevate the

  546. apostles and

  547. they do have

  548. an authority

  549. because they

  550. saw the

  551. risen Christ

  552. but if we

  553. trust in

  554. Christ we

  555. have the

  556. same standing

  557. of faith as

  558. the apostles

  559. in the sight of

  560. God.

  561. How does

  562. that come

  563. about?

  564. By the

  565. righteousness

  566. of our

  567. God and

  568. Saviour

  569. Jesus Christ.

  570. That's an

  571. encouraging verse

  572. but verse 2.

  573. Why is Peter

  574. writing this

  575. letter?

  576. May grace

  577. and peace

  578. be multiplied

  579. to you in

  580. the knowledge

  581. of God and

  582. of Jesus

  583. our Lord.

  584. Grace and

  585. peace.

  586. He wants us

  587. to have grace

  588. and peace.

  589. I think even

  590. there that

  591. should make

  592. you think

  593. that's a funny

  594. way to give

  595. you peace

  596. to then

  597. make you

  598. question

  599. whether

  600. you're

  601. one of

  602. God's

  603. people or

  604. not.

  605. Even there

  606. it's like

  607. I'm not

  608. sure I've

  609. read this

  610. correctly.

  611. But then

  612. we go on.

  613. Keep

  614. analysing the

  615. detail.

  616. Verses 3

  617. and 4.

  618. What's the

  619. truth for

  620. this very

  621. reason

  622. confirming

  623. you're

  624. calling an

  625. election?

  626. What is

  627. that reason?

  628. We find

  629. it in

  630. verse 3

  631. and 4.

  632. His,

  633. God's,

  634. divine power

  635. power,

  636. has granted

  637. to us

  638. all things

  639. that pertain

  640. to life

  641. and godliness

  642. through the

  643. knowledge of

  644. him who

  645. called us

  646. to his

  647. own glory

  648. and excellence

  649. by which

  650. he has

  651. granted to

  652. us his

  653. precious

  654. and very

  655. great

  656. promises

  657. so that

  658. through them

  659. you may

  660. become

  661. partakers

  662. of the

  663. divine

  664. nature,

  665. having

  666. escaped

  667. from the

  668. corruption

  669. that is

  670. in the

  671. world

  672. because

  673. of sinful

  674. desire.

  675. God's

  676. divine

  677. power

  678. is given

  679. to you

  680. and me

  681. for all

  682. things,

  683. for life

  684. and godliness.

  685. Growing

  686. in the

  687. knowledge

  688. of him,

  689. he's given

  690. us his

  691. precious

  692. promises

  693. that we

  694. might partake

  695. of his

  696. divine

  697. nature.

  698. All

  699. God's

  700. power

  701. is at

  702. work

  703. to save

  704. you,

  705. to transform

  706. you

  707. into his

  708. likeness.

  709. So for

  710. this very

  711. reason,

  712. God is

  713. at work

  714. in you.

  715. You have

  716. all his

  717. help

  718. to become

  719. like him.

  720. So for

  721. this reason,

  722. add virtue,

  723. knowledge,

  724. brotherly love

  725. and so on.

  726. He's at

  727. work,

  728. therefore

  729. add these

  730. things,

  731. do these

  732. things.

  733. things.

  734. That's

  735. the basis,

  736. what he

  737. has done.

  738. And then

  739. if you

  740. go,

  741. look on

  742. the other

  743. side of

  744. the text,

  745. verse 12.

  746. Therefore

  747. I intend

  748. always to

  749. remind you

  750. of these

  751. qualities,

  752. though you

  753. know them

  754. and are

  755. established

  756. in the

  757. truth you

  758. have.

  759. He's not

  760. talking to

  761. people who

  762. are out of

  763. the faith,

  764. he's saying

  765. you're in

  766. it.

  767. God's

  768. power is

  769. at work,

  770. therefore

  771. join him

  772. in that

  773. transformation

  774. process.

  775. All this

  776. should make

  777. us re-examine

  778. verse 10.

  779. Have we

  780. understood it

  781. correctly?

  782. Is it a

  783. test that

  784. you pass

  785. or fail?

  786. I don't

  787. think it

  788. is.

  789. It's not.

  790. Because if

  791. it is a

  792. test,

  793. it would

  794. be demanding

  795. perfection.

  796. And no

  797. one can

  798. pass that.

  799. It's not

  800. a test,

  801. it's a

  802. road map.

  803. It's a

  804. road map

  805. of what we

  806. should be

  807. striving

  808. towards.

  809. Having been

  810. saved through

  811. the faith in

  812. God's promises,

  813. having God's

  814. power on

  815. our side,

  816. verse 10

  817. is saying

  818. join God

  819. in working

  820. towards that

  821. same goal

  822. that he

  823. is calling

  824. you towards,

  825. that he

  826. is working

  827. you towards.

  828. It doesn't

  829. mean you

  830. have to take

  831. great strides

  832. each day in

  833. becoming more

  834. like Christ,

  835. but if you're

  836. stumbling in

  837. that direction,

  838. that same

  839. direction,

  840. that's evidence

  841. that God is

  842. at work

  843. bringing you

  844. towards

  845. himself.

  846. I think we

  847. can get

  848. confused here

  849. because when

  850. the Bible

  851. talks about

  852. salvation,

  853. it can talk

  854. about it in

  855. three ways,

  856. past,

  857. present and

  858. future.

  859. So some

  860. verses are

  861. saying you

  862. have been

  863. saved,

  864. Christ has

  865. saved you,

  866. you are

  867. saved.

  868. Other verses

  869. are saying

  870. when Christ

  871. returns you

  872. will be

  873. saved.

  874. Here is an

  875. example where

  876. a passage is

  877. saying you

  878. are being

  879. saved.

  880. And we're

  881. meant to be

  882. active in

  883. that process.

  884. God is

  885. saving you

  886. to transform

  887. us to

  888. become like

  889. him,

  890. sharing in

  891. the divine

  892. nature,

  893. so let's

  894. be active

  895. in doing

  896. that.

  897. That's what

  898. verse 10

  899. is saying.

  900. Get on

  901. board with

  902. what God

  903. is already

  904. doing inside

  905. you.

  906. It's not

  907. a test,

  908. it's a

  909. roadmap to

  910. say keep

  911. striving towards

  912. that.

  913. An

  914. unbeliever

  915. doesn't have

  916. that as

  917. the goal.

  918. But if

  919. you want

  920. that,

  921. even though

  922. you're so

  923. aware of

  924. failing that

  925. so often,

  926. if that's

  927. your trajectory,

  928. even though

  929. you might

  930. stumble one

  931. day,

  932. you might

  933. even stumble

  934. for a

  935. period of

  936. years,

  937. but if

  938. your overall

  939. trajectory is

  940. that you

  941. want to

  942. be with

  943. God and

  944. like him,

  945. that is

  946. great evidence

  947. that God

  948. is at

  949. work in

  950. you to

  951. bring you

  952. to himself.

  953. So I

  954. hope that

  955. demonstrates

  956. that when

  957. texts

  958. trouble you,

  959. just slow

  960. down,

  961. pray,

  962. get the

  963. help of

  964. other

  965. Christians,

  966. and just

  967. make sure

  968. you're

  969. actually

  970. hearing God

  971. correctly.

  972. So that's

  973. the first

  974. one,

  975. troubling

  976. texts.

  977. Another

  978. perspective

  979. that can

  980. help someone

  981. who's

  982. wrestling

  983. with this

  984. question

  985. is

  986. doubting

  987. your

  988. doubt.

  989. Now,

  990. how do

  991. you do

  992. that?

  993. Just ask

  994. questions of

  995. where is

  996. this question

  997. coming from?

  998. So for

  999. me,

  1000. it makes

  1001. me think,

  1002. what kind

  1003. of person

  1004. asks this

  1005. question?

  1006. Can I

  1007. be sure

  1008. that I

  1009. am one

  1010. of the

  1011. elect?

  1012. This isn't

  1013. a theoretical

  1014. question.

  1015. I.

  1016. Can I

  1017. be sure

  1018. that I

  1019. am one

  1020. of the

  1021. elect?

  1022. It's

  1023. someone who

  1024. wants to

  1025. be saved.

  1026. But it's

  1027. someone who

  1028. for some

  1029. reason

  1030. thinks they're

  1031. not elect.

  1032. And the

  1033. only thing I

  1034. can think

  1035. of is

  1036. that they're

  1037. so aware

  1038. of their

  1039. own

  1040. failings.

  1041. Now,

  1042. who would

  1043. be aware

  1044. of their

  1045. own

  1046. failings?

  1047. Someone

  1048. who doesn't

  1049. want God

  1050. or someone

  1051. who does?

  1052. It's

  1053. someone who

  1054. does,

  1055. who would

  1056. be aware

  1057. of their

  1058. own

  1059. failings.

  1060. Or you

  1061. could ask

  1062. the question,

  1063. what does

  1064. a person

  1065. already

  1066. believe in

  1067. order to

  1068. ask the

  1069. question,

  1070. am I

  1071. one of

  1072. the elect?

  1073. They

  1074. already

  1075. believe that

  1076. the Bible

  1077. is the

  1078. authority on

  1079. this matter,

  1080. God's

  1081. word is

  1082. the

  1083. authority

  1084. on whether

  1085. you're

  1086. saved or

  1087. not.

  1088. They

  1089. already

  1090. believe in

  1091. sin,

  1092. that sin

  1093. is real

  1094. and that

  1095. it's a

  1096. big problem

  1097. that you're

  1098. going to be

  1099. saved or

  1100. not.

  1101. They

  1102. already

  1103. believe in

  1104. their sin

  1105. that they

  1106. need a

  1107. saviour.

  1108. They

  1109. already

  1110. believe in

  1111. this is

  1112. they already

  1113. believe in

  1114. Jesus,

  1115. that he

  1116. is the

  1117. saviour.

  1118. and they

  1119. already

  1120. believe that

  1121. their only

  1122. hope is if

  1123. God

  1124. sovereignly

  1125. works to

  1126. elect.

  1127. That's a

  1128. lot of

  1129. truths that

  1130. you're already

  1131. believing to

  1132. even ask

  1133. this question.

  1134. How else

  1135. can you

  1136. doubt your

  1137. doubt?

  1138. I'm looking

  1139. at the word

  1140. sure there.

  1141. Can I be

  1142. sure that I

  1143. am one of

  1144. God's elect?

  1145. How would

  1146. you go about

  1147. proving that?

  1148. What evidence

  1149. would you look

  1150. to to go,

  1151. okay, I'm

  1152. looking at

  1153. that, I'm

  1154. sure I'm

  1155. one of the

  1156. elect now.

  1157. It's got to

  1158. be irrefutable.

  1159. It's got to

  1160. be absolutely

  1161. rock solid.

  1162. If you're

  1163. looking to

  1164. your own

  1165. fruit, then

  1166. you would

  1167. need 100%

  1168. good fruit

  1169. for you to

  1170. be sure

  1171. you're one

  1172. of the

  1173. elect, if

  1174. fruit is the

  1175. measure of

  1176. being sure.

  1177. But then you

  1178. already know

  1179. that's not the

  1180. gospel.

  1181. you know it's

  1182. not by works,

  1183. but by

  1184. trusting.

  1185. So if it's

  1186. not our own

  1187. fruit, what

  1188. else could

  1189. make you

  1190. sure?

  1191. There's only

  1192. one thing

  1193. really that

  1194. could make

  1195. you sure

  1196. that you're

  1197. elect.

  1198. That's if

  1199. God says,

  1200. you are

  1201. elect.

  1202. I think

  1203. that's the

  1204. only place

  1205. that would

  1206. be solid

  1207. enough for

  1208. you to

  1209. go, I

  1210. must be

  1211. elect.

  1212. God says

  1213. so.

  1214. Which then

  1215. just pushes

  1216. us towards

  1217. faith.

  1218. Trusting,

  1219. not what

  1220. we do, but

  1221. him saying

  1222. so.

  1223. So there's

  1224. just a few

  1225. ways to

  1226. just doubt

  1227. your doubt.

  1228. Your doubt

  1229. can feel so

  1230. strong, but

  1231. when you ask

  1232. a few

  1233. questions of

  1234. it, it's

  1235. not as

  1236. strong as

  1237. you think.

  1238. Only

  1239. someone in

  1240. the arena

  1241. of faith

  1242. actually cares

  1243. about this

  1244. question.

  1245. You're

  1246. believing so

  1247. much of

  1248. the Bible

  1249. by even

  1250. asking this

  1251. question.

  1252. And it

  1253. drives you

  1254. towards not

  1255. looking at

  1256. your fruit,

  1257. but what

  1258. God says

  1259. is true.

  1260. So doubt

  1261. your doubt.

  1262. A third

  1263. way to be

  1264. thinking is

  1265. well,

  1266. maybe this

  1267. question isn't

  1268. a good

  1269. question.

  1270. Does God

  1271. want me to

  1272. ask this

  1273. question?

  1274. Can I be

  1275. sure that I'm

  1276. one of the

  1277. elect?

  1278. Is that

  1279. God's

  1280. question of

  1281. you and

  1282. I?

  1283. When we

  1284. hear the

  1285. gospel,

  1286. are we

  1287. meant to

  1288. think,

  1289. okay,

  1290. now I

  1291. need to

  1292. work out,

  1293. God wants

  1294. me to

  1295. work out,

  1296. is my

  1297. name written

  1298. in the

  1299. book or

  1300. not?

  1301. Am I

  1302. elect or

  1303. not?

  1304. Is God

  1305. asking us

  1306. that question?

  1307. Well,

  1308. where in

  1309. his word

  1310. does he

  1311. ask us

  1312. to work

  1313. that out

  1314. or not?

  1315. I can't

  1316. think of

  1317. anywhere.

  1318. You can

  1319. correct me

  1320. if I'm

  1321. wrong,

  1322. but every

  1323. time election

  1324. is mentioned,

  1325. it's spoken

  1326. as words of

  1327. love from

  1328. God,

  1329. saying to

  1330. reassure

  1331. you,

  1332. you are

  1333. one of my

  1334. people.

  1335. And it's

  1336. spoken like

  1337. we saw in

  1338. 2 Peter,

  1339. because you're

  1340. one of my

  1341. people,

  1342. strive to

  1343. become holy

  1344. like me,

  1345. because I'm

  1346. at work in

  1347. you.

  1348. It's never

  1349. spoken in

  1350. the Bible

  1351. as work

  1352. out if

  1353. you're

  1354. elect or

  1355. not.

  1356. Now,

  1357. why would

  1358. that be?

  1359. That's because

  1360. election is

  1361. God's business,

  1362. that's his

  1363. divine business,

  1364. that's what he

  1365. does in

  1366. salvation,

  1367. that's not

  1368. our responsibility.

  1369. And he

  1370. tells us

  1371. about that,

  1372. not for us

  1373. to do

  1374. anything with

  1375. it,

  1376. except be

  1377. reassured and

  1378. motivated to

  1379. keep striving.

  1380. So what

  1381. question does

  1382. God ask us

  1383. to answer?

  1384. What's our

  1385. responsibility?

  1386. And this is

  1387. where we come

  1388. to Simon's

  1389. question that

  1390. you guys were

  1391. discussing

  1392. before I

  1393. started.

  1394. So when it

  1395. comes to the

  1396. doctrines of

  1397. grace,

  1398. these are

  1399. wonderful truths

  1400. of the Bible.

  1401. They are

  1402. central in the

  1403. Bible.

  1404. They are

  1405. central in

  1406. understanding

  1407. salvation.

  1408. And so as a

  1409. church, we

  1410. want to keep

  1411. them central.

  1412. They're

  1413. beautiful truths

  1414. that we can

  1415. rest in God's

  1416. sovereignty in

  1417. our salvation.

  1418. But do you

  1419. need to believe

  1420. in total

  1421. depravity to be

  1422. saved?

  1423. No.

  1424. believe in

  1425. sin, you

  1426. don't need to

  1427. believe that to

  1428. be saved.

  1429. Do you

  1430. need to

  1431. believe in

  1432. the irresistible

  1433. call of the

  1434. Holy Spirit to

  1435. be a Christian?

  1436. The call of the

  1437. gospel, yes,

  1438. but the

  1439. irresistible

  1440. call, no,

  1441. you don't have to

  1442. believe that to be

  1443. a Christian.

  1444. Do you

  1445. need to

  1446. believe in

  1447. Christ's

  1448. particular

  1449. redemption to

  1450. be a

  1451. Christian?

  1452. That Christ is

  1453. the only way to

  1454. be redeemed,

  1455. yes, but in

  1456. particular redemption,

  1457. no.

  1458. Do you

  1459. need to believe in

  1460. the preservation of

  1461. the saints to be

  1462. saved?

  1463. that a

  1464. Christian needs

  1465. to make it to

  1466. the end

  1467. believing, yes,

  1468. but that that's

  1469. guaranteed, you

  1470. don't actually have

  1471. to believe that to

  1472. be saved.

  1473. Do you

  1474. need to believe in

  1475. unconditional

  1476. election to be a

  1477. Christian and be

  1478. saved?

  1479. No.

  1480. Now let me

  1481. reiterate, these

  1482. are beautiful

  1483. truths.

  1484. I wouldn't give

  1485. them up in a

  1486. moment.

  1487. I pray anyway.

  1488. These are

  1489. beautiful truths.

  1490. We want to keep

  1491. them central in

  1492. our church.

  1493. But there are

  1494. other Christians,

  1495. evangelical

  1496. Christians, who

  1497. don't believe

  1498. these points.

  1499. Now that, and

  1500. we should call

  1501. them brothers and

  1502. sisters because

  1503. they look to

  1504. Jesus' death and

  1505. resurrection alone

  1506. to save them.

  1507. They are

  1508. Christians.

  1509. Now that should

  1510. make us stop and

  1511. think, is

  1512. wondering if I'm

  1513. elect or not, is

  1514. that a good

  1515. question?

  1516. question or what

  1517. is the most

  1518. fundamental question

  1519. that God is

  1520. asking us to

  1521. answer when we

  1522. hear the gospel?

  1523. Let's look at a

  1524. few passages to

  1525. illustrate what that

  1526. question is, what's

  1527. our responsibility.

  1528. So Acts 13, 48.

  1529. Paul is preaching to

  1530. a crowd about who

  1531. Jesus is, what he

  1532. has done, and then

  1533. Luke makes this

  1534. observation.

  1535. When the Gentiles

  1536. heard this, they

  1537. began rejoicing and

  1538. glorifying the word of

  1539. the Lord, and as

  1540. many as were

  1541. appointed to eternal

  1542. life, believed.

  1543. Now, these non-Jews who

  1544. believed, were they

1545. asked to work out if

  1546. they were appointed to

  1547. eternal life?

1548. No, I doubt they were

1549. even aware of that at

  1550. this stage.

  1551. That's Luke's divinely

  1552. inspired interpretation of

  1553. why they believed.

  1554. What was their

  1555. responsibility to work

  1556. out?

1557. They heard from Paul who

1558. Jesus is, what he has

  1559. done.

  1560. The question they

1561. needed to work out was,

1562. will I believe this or

  1563. not?

  1564. Will I trust this?

  1565. How will you respond

  1566. to Jesus?

  1567. That's the question that

1568. you and I have to ask.

  1569. That's the question God

1570. asks of us and we have

  1571. to answer.

1572. Or consider the thief on

  1573. the cross.

1574. He has minutes to live.

  1575. What question is he

  1576. confronted with, with

  1577. Jesus hanging beside

  1578. him?

1579. He doesn't have time to

1580. go into the depths of

  1581. God's sovereignty and

  1582. salvation.

  1583. Yet Jesus says, today

1584. you'll be with me in

  1585. paradise.

  1586. From this man's words,

1587. we hear that he says

  1588. two things.

  1589. Remember me when you

  1590. enter your kingdom.

  1591. Your kingdom.

  1592. He recognises that

1593. Jesus is king and he

  1594. asks for mercy.

  1595. Remember me.

  1596. I deserve to die.

  1597. Remember me.

  1598. Give me mercy.

  1599. Jesus is king.

  1600. Give me mercy.

  1601. That's the question.

  1602. He was responding,

1603. what are you going to

  1604. do with Jesus, says

  1605. God.

1606. And the thief on the

  1607. cross says, you are

  1608. king.

  1609. Please give me mercy.

  1610. That's the question of

  1611. the gospel.

  1612. Not are you elect?

1613. What are you going to

  1614. do with Jesus?

  1615. Or John 5, 24.

  1616. Truly, truly, truly, I

  1617. say to you, whoever

  1618. hears my word and

  1619. believes him who sent

  1620. me has eternal life.

  1621. This is Jesus speaking.

1622. He does not come into

  1623. judgment, but has passed

  1624. from death to life.

  1625. He who believes has

  1626. crossed from death to

  1627. life based on believing.

1628. So the question of the

  1629. gospel isn't, are you

  1630. elect?

  1631. The question of the

1632. gospel is, what are you

  1633. doing with Jesus?

  1634. Are you trusting him?

1635. Are you looking to him as

  1636. your only hope?

1637. Because if you are, you

  1638. have crossed over from

  1639. death to life.

1640. So that's the third way we

1641. need to be talking to

  1642. ourselves.

  1643. What question is God

  1644. asking us?

  1645. Am I, how am I

  1646. responding to Jesus?

1647. The fourth one is to do

  1648. with self-reflection,

  1649. self-evaluation.

  1650. When we look inside

1651. ourselves into our mind and

  1652. desires and feelings, and

1653. when we look, we just don't

  1654. see much excitement for

1655. God, but instead we just

1656. see all this sinful muck.

1657. What do we do with that?

  1658. What do we do?

  1659. At first we can

  1660. rationalise that and go,

  1661. well, I'm a sinner and

1662. therefore I need to be

  1663. saved.

1664. But if we keep our eyes

  1665. fixed on ourselves and

1666. just see all the muck, it

  1667. just becomes overwhelming.

  1668. You're not seeing any

  1669. change.

1670. If your gaze is just

  1671. fixed within yourself, you're

  1672. so desperate to want

  1673. improvement.

1674. But the problem is, because

  1675. you want improvement, you're

1676. just so sensitive to your own

  1677. failings.

  1678. What do we do?

1679. Is there a better way to be

  1680. self-reflective?

1681. Because I think doing that is

1682. like sitting in a dark room,

1683. straining your eyes to see some

  1684. skerrick of light within

  1685. yourself.

1686. But it's not going to come.

1687. All you're going to find is

1688. darkness if you just stay here.

1689. There's got to be a better way to

  1690. do it.

1691. The better way is to open a

  1692. window.

1693. I'm not sure if this picture is

1694. going to work or not.

1695. Open a window and let some

  1696. light in.

1697. In other words, don't use

  1698. yourself as the reference

  1699. point.

1700. You need an external reference

  1701. point.

1702. You need God's grace to speak

1703. into you, not just keep

  1704. looking at yourself.

1705. The Lord doesn't want us to

1706. stay staring at our own failings

  1707. of faith or obedience.

1708. He wants us to look at the

  1709. light, at Christ, his

  1710. forgiveness, his divine help,

  1711. his relational warmth.

1712. We need him pouring into us.

1713. Now, can I pause and say that

1714. some people don't look inside

  1715. enough.

1716. Some people just almost make a

1717. habit of not looking inside.

1718. Their problem will be a

  1719. superficial understanding of sin

1720. and of God's holiness and

  1721. therefore of God's wonderful

  1722. grace.

  1723. But that's not this person's

1724. problem if you're asking this

  1725. question this morning.

1726. We should be looking inside.

1727. The light of the gospel exposes

  1728. more darkness within us.

  1729. But don't live there.

  1730. Don't stay there.

1731. Don't set up camp within

  1732. yourself.

1733. When you see darkness, that's

1734. meant to drive us to want

  1735. light.

1736. So don't have yourself as the

  1737. reference point.

1738. Have Christ as the reference

  1739. point.

1740. And we do that by his word

  1741. pouring into us.

1742. And I think his word can pour

1743. into us through the community

1744. of the church and his word,

  1745. obviously, his written word.

1746. We need his light flooding

  1747. into us.

1748. So don't just live within

  1749. yourself.

1750. We need to be feeding off his

  1751. word, his promises, his

  1752. gospel.

1753. So let's do that for the

  1754. remaining time, shall we?

1755. We've come to the last

  1756. point.

1757. Don't dwell on what you have

  1758. or haven't done.

1759. Dwell on what God has done.

  1760. That's the reference point.

1761. That's the light that floods

  1762. in.

1763. So please turn back to

  1764. Ephesians as we finish.

1765. We'll spend our remaining time

  1766. here.

1767. So just jumping to verse 3.

1768. Blessed be the God and

1769. Father of our Lord Jesus

1770. Christ, who has blessed us

  1771. in Christ with every

  1772. spiritual blessing in the

  1773. heavenly places.

1774. Paul starts not by looking

  1775. within ourselves, but looking

1776. to what God has done.

  1777. This is a...

  1778. I love this passage.

1779. If you're allowed to have

1780. favourites, I think this is my

1781. favourite chapter in the Bible.

  1782. It's...

  1783. It's...

  1784. It's...

  1785. It's awesome.

  1786. Now, every spiritual

  1787. blessing...

1788. I used to think, okay,

  1789. that's cool.

  1790. I've got this undefined

  1791. spiritual blessing somewhere

  1792. up there that I suppose I'll

  1793. see one day.

  1794. I don't know what that is.

  1795. That's not what Paul's

  1796. saying here.

1797. He goes on to define what

1798. we have, what that blessing

  1799. we've received.

  1800. Verses 4 to 14.

1801. At this point, I want to

1802. hand it over to you.

1803. Not talking to the person

1804. next to you, but I want to

  1805. practice focusing on letting

  1806. the light in.

1807. So, I'm going to give you a

1808. minute just to write down,

1809. and we'll start with that

  1810. first question on the

  1811. outline.

1812. I want you to list all the

1813. ways the Father has given

  1814. you every spiritual blessing.

1815. How has the Father blessed

  1816. you?

  1817. Just list it.

1818. So, let me give you a

  1819. minute to do that.

1820. Okay, I'd love to hear...

1821. Let's just do this really

  1822. quickly.

1823. I'd love to hear some input

  1824. from some...

  1825. Whoever.

  1826. Let's just work through

  1827. this together.

  1828. What has he done?

1829. What has the Father done,

  1830. given us?

  1831. Just call out.

  1832. Verse 4.

1833. He chose us before the

  1834. foundation of the world.

  1835. He chose us.

  1836. It was his initiative.

  1837. Okay, what else?

  1838. Sorry, Will.

1839. I'm just going to go with

  1840. the first one, adoption.

1841. Yes, he's adopted us as

  1842. his sons.

1843. He's called us to the praise

  1844. of his glorious grace.

1845. Can I go back there?

  1846. He's predestined us.

  1847. He's decided beforehand,

1848. I'm going to save you.

1849. You're going to be on a path

1850. of destruction, but I'm going

  1851. to intervene.

1852. You are going to be adopted.

1853. You're going to be one of mine.

1854. And even before that, that we

1855. should be holy and blameless

  1856. before him.

1857. I think we can feel pressure

  1858. there.

1859. I need to be holy and blameless.

  1860. That's true, but this is a

  1861. commitment here.

1862. God is determined to make us

  1863. holy and blameless.

1864. This is more a promise here than

  1865. anything.

  1866. Okay, what else?

  1867. Verse 7.

  1868. Thank you, Will.

1869. I'm just trying to get lots of

  1870. input.

  1871. Verse 7.

1872. He's redeemed us through his

  1873. blood.

1874. We were caught in sin.

  1875. He's bought us.

1876. We belong to him now.

1877. He's redeemed us through his

  1878. blood.

  1879. Okay, forgiveness of our

  1880. trespasses.

  1881. Verse 9.

1882. Yeah, he's made known to the

  1883. mystery of his will.

  1884. He's told us where the world's

1885. heading, that everything is going

1886. to be united in Christ.

1887. We're not aimless and purposeless

  1888. in this world.

1889. We know where it's heading.

1890. He's got a good plan and we

  1891. know it.

1892. We can live in line with that.

1893. We can get on board with it.

  1894. Yeah, verse 6.

  1895. Accepted in the beloved.

  1896. Yep.

  1897. Okay, verse 11.

  1898. Obtained an inheritance.

  1899. Again, we've got that

  1900. predestined.

  1901. I think verse 12 there.

1902. To the praise of his glory.

  1903. I think that's a gift as well.

1904. We have a great purpose.

  1905. It's a purpose outside ourselves.

1906. It's to the praise of his glory.

1907. Even that is a gift.

  1908. What about verse 13?

1909. Yeah, we're not alone, are we?

1910. The word here is, it's like a

  1911. pledge.

1912. It's like God has given us a down

  1913. payment of eternal life.

  1914. His Holy Spirit himself.

  1915. Eternal life has begun.

1916. I would argue as well in verse 13

1917. that when you heard the word of

1918. truth, even hearing the word of

1919. truth, I would argue from other

1920. parts of scripture that God sends us

  1921. the gospel.

1922. Even that is a gift.

  1923. Okay.

  1924. Let's do that again.

1925. Can I give you another minute?

1926. What part does Jesus have to play in

  1927. all this?

1928. And you're going to see in him, through him.

1929. I would really love you to write it down

  1930. every single time.

1931. So can I give you another minute?

1932. What part does Jesus have to play?

1933. Okay, there's probably not quite a minute.

1934. I'm conscious of the time here.

1935. Instead of getting responses, I'm just going to

  1936. read all the times.

1937. I'm not going to read all the verses, but in him,

1938. through Jesus Christ, blessed us in the beloved.

1939. In him, we have redemption.

1940. Through his blood, we know the plan that he set forth in

  1941. Christ.

1942. Christ is the one bringing about this plan.

1943. And Christ is the object of our faith.

1944. In him, we are included.

1945. That we hope in Christ.

1946. It's just in him, through him.

1947. It's just all about Christ.

1948. It's everything we receive from the Father is in Jesus.

1949. It doesn't come to us by another means.

  1950. It's in Jesus.

1951. Okay, one last one, and this one should be really

  1952. quick.

1953. What part do we have to play in all this,

  1954. in salvation?

1955. What part do we have to play?

1956. I can only see two things in verses 12 and 13.

1957. Put our hope in Christ and believe the gospel.

1958. I think they're describing the same reality there.

  1959. It's all him.

1960. It's just putting our hope in him.

  1961. It's a beautiful passage.

  1962. Salvation is by God.

1963. Dwell on what he has done, not what we have or haven't done.

  1964. Let the light in.

1965. If you are sure, in and of yourself, you have no hope of

1966. entering heaven based on what you do.

1967. If you have any hope, it's got to be only what God gives you in

  1968. Jesus.

1969. Then whether you believe it or not, whether you feel confident or not,

1970. in a sense, it doesn't matter whether you feel confident or not in that.

1971. But if your only hope is in Jesus, God says,

1972. your name is written in the book of life.

1973. This might plague you, but know God's love.

1974. He speaks these words of love for us.

1975. Your name is written in the book of life.

1976. You will receive a warm welcome.

1977. Why don't we pray to finish?

  1978. Would you pray?

1979. Lord, we praise you for just your goodness, your patience with us,

1980. that you are the one who guarantees that we'll make it home to glory.

1981. Lord, I pray again that you would be comforting the hearts of those

1982. who are really wrestling with this personally.

1983. Lord, we know that no one can snatch us out of your hand.

1984. Your hand is too strong.

1985. So I pray that you might, in your good time,

1986. give them peace and rest in you.

1987. But Lord, we thank you that ultimately it doesn't come down to our sense of

1988. assurance, but it comes down to the fact that you are a faithful God

1989. in that we do, that we are secure.

1990. So we praise you for that.

  1991. In Jesus' name, amen.
