  1. So let's read John chapter 17, starting at verse 1.

    John 17 chapter mention

  2. When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven and said,

  3. Father, the hour has come.

  4. Glorify your Son, that the Son may glorify you.

  5. Since you have given him authority over all flesh to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.

  6. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

  7. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.

  8. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

  9. I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world.

  10. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.

  11. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you.

  12. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them,

  13. and have come to know in truth that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me.

  14. I am praying for them.

  15. I am not praying for the world, but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.

  16. All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.

  17. And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you.

  18. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

  19. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me.

  20. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost, except the son of destruction, that the scripture might be fulfilled.

  21. But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

  22. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

  23. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.

  24. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

  25. I do not ask for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one,

  26. just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

  27. The glory that you have given me, I have given to them, that they may be one, even as we are one.

  28. I in them, and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me,

  29. and loved them, even as you loved me.

  30. Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am,

  31. to see my glory that you have given me, because you loved me before the foundation of the world.

  32. O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you,

  33. and these know that you have sent me.

  34. I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known,

  35. that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.

  36. That's the word of the Lord.

  37. Okay.

  38. We're eight weeks into a nine-week series,

  39. considering how we experience God's sovereignty, God's power, in our salvation.

  40. I just want to recap a little bit before we jump into the question this morning,

  41. because I think it's important to remind ourselves that as we've looked at this whole issue of experiencing God's power and salvation,

  42. we've been swept away by the language of salvation.

  43. We've seen that the nature and extent of sin leaves a person in a totally hopeless situation before God.

  44. But then the language of salvation sweeps in.

  45. God takes the initiative in his love, in his mercy.

  46. He initiates our salvation.

  47. He initiates everything that's required to bring us back into good relationship with himself.

  48. Very powerful, compelling language.

  49. And all of that effort on God's part is received by us as pure grace.

  50. That's another word of salvation.

  51. It's something that we're so totally contrary to what we deserve.

  52. And we've been reminded, as we work through what are commonly called the doctrines of grace,

  53. we've been reminded that salvation from start to finish is due to God's actions, powerful actions for us and in us.

  54. And we saw last week that God's golden chain of salvation with inseparable links that speaks so much of security and completeness

  55. and the fact that God's got us, at no point are we left to our own resources.

  56. That's so lovely, that language, isn't it?

  57. So reassuring.

  58. In Romans 8 and 29, we saw last week that God, at the start, God determines who will be saved.

  59. Then he acts decisively to save them.

  60. Then he guarantees that a saved people will make it all the way home to heaven,

  61. where we'll be with Jesus and we'll be like Jesus.

  62. It's just incredible as that language just sweeps over us.

  63. Yet, and this is something I find is really incredible, yet incredibly, for many believers,

  64. God's golden chain of salvation is not a cause to praise him, to praise him for his grace.

  65. It's not something they find wonderful assurance in,

  66. but in actual fact, for so many Christians, that has been the cause of angry division

  67. and separation within Christian communities.

  68. It's actually been the cause of some Christians to doubt God's character and God's goodness.

  69. It just seems so counterintuitive to have the language of grace and love and mercy

  70. and to end up really thinking that God's not good.

  71. Oof.

  72. I think I'm starting to sound like Dave Bott just in the way I said that, didn't I?

  73. He's channeling me from on holidays.

  74. Okay, so in response to that, we've been addressing some of the common questions

  75. posed in response to God's absolute sovereignty and salvation.

  76. And this morning, the question is, as Matt introduced us,

  77. does God's absolute sovereignty or power,

  78. does that make evangelism and prayer for us as Christians pointless?

  79. Since God has already set his love upon specific individuals,

  80. since he's already marked them out for salvation,

  81. and since only those ones will be saved,

  82. then what is the point of me evangelizing?

  83. What is the point of me praying for the salvation of people in general

  84. or a specific person in particular?

  85. And as Matt rightly said, it's a big question.

  86. All these questions we've been dealing with are big questions.

  87. Now, I want to push this in four directions.

  88. Well, it's not actually four directions.

  89. I want to sort of step through this in four steps.

  90. There might well be other steps.

  91. I just couldn't think of them.

  92. You might come up with a better answer than I've got this morning.

  93. But it is what it is, and you can deal with me afterwards.

  94. The first step I wanted to take is to say this.

  95. We need to recognize that there is no ultimately satisfying answer

  96. in any of these questions about God

  97. and God's action and salvation.

  98. We can go so far in philosophical analysis,

  99. but inevitably we'll come to a point where we can't go any further,

  100. and there'll still be a point we just don't understand.

  101. And because of that, it's really important

  102. to be aware of our presuppositions and assumptions

  103. that we might bring to any of these questions

  104. regarding God's absolute sovereignty.

  105. Now, here's the point, you see.

  106. I think we're victims of our so-called scientific,

  107. evidence-based culture.

  108. That's what we hear all the time.

  109. And it runs like this.

  110. Science really claims, or perhaps it's pseudoscience,

  111. science claims that if I cannot understand something fully,

  112. if I cannot explain the logic of something,

  113. the process of something then,

  114. it's probably not real

  115. and probably foolish to believe it.

  116. Now, when armed with our assumptions of human logic,

  117. such as those,

  118. when we go looking for the logic of God

  119. and we intersect God saying on the one hand

  120. that salvation is his sovereign initiative

  121. and action from start to finish,

  122. yet on the other hand,

  123. God's saying that he commands us to pray and evangelize.

  124. With our human logic,

  125. we quickly conclude, or easily conclude,

  126. that these two things just don't sit with each other.

  127. In fact, we conclude that they've got to be enemies

  128. because we can't quite work out

  129. how they work together.

  130. And so we quickly move to the conclusion

  131. that they're enemies.

  132. They cannot both be true.

  133. And from there,

  134. we conclude that God cannot be sovereign in salvation,

  135. as he claims.

  136. Or, we conclude that God is sovereign,

  137. but a monstrous tyrant.

  138. Because our understanding of his sovereign action

  139. doesn't fit with what we think would be a good action.

  140. Now, the problem with all that is

  141. that it actually lies in the face

  142. of what we live with practically and constantly

  143. at so many points in our life.

  144. At so many points of trying to interact with our universe.

  145. The best scientific minds

  146. concede that at so many points

  147. we observe things in the universe

  148. that don't fit our logic,

  149. that don't fit our ideas of how things should work,

  150. that can't be understood,

  151. that can't be explained.

  152. Yet,

  153. the reality of them cannot be denied.

  154. And so,

  155. that creates a tension.

  156. Where is the tension sourced?

  157. The tension is sourced

  158. not in what we observe,

  159. but in our understanding,

  160. our ability to understand and comprehend

  161. and articulate

  162. in the process of what we observe.

  163. The problem is ours.

  164. How much more, then,

  165. when it comes to understanding

  166. the infinite character

  167. and working of our God

  168. with our finite brains?

  169. Scientists don't understand, really,

  170. how the universe can be both expanding exponentially

  171. and also deteriorating.

  172. And so,

  173. for us,

  174. when we come to bring our logic

  175. to God

  176. and make God

  177. fit our logic

  178. and our ideas

  179. of what's good

  180. and consistent

  181. and right

  182. and how things should work,

  183. then,

  184. I think it's both foolish

  185. and arrogant

  186. to conclude

  187. that because we cannot understand

  188. to our satisfaction

  189. and logic

  190. how God's absolute sovereignty

  191. and human responsibility

  192. fit together,

  193. it's arrogant

  194. and foolish

  195. to conclude

  196. that, therefore,

  197. because we can't understand it,

  198. therefore,

  199. it can't sit together

  200. or it won't sit together.

  201. And that,

  202. therefore,

  203. if we see these two things

  204. and they don't fit together,

  205. then,

  206. our option is either

  207. that we're puppets

  208. or

  209. that God's not absolutely sovereign.

  210. Now,

  211. J.I. Packer,

  212. in his book

  213. Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God,

  214. and I think that book

  215. still was written

  216. in the 70s or 80s,

  217. but I don't think

  218. it's been surpassed.

  219. Get a copy of it

  220. if you can get a hold of it.

  221. Actually,

  222. this is a moment to say

  223. somebody out there

  224. has got my copy.

  225. Anyway,

  226. Packer says this,

  227. a God

  228. whom we could understand

  229. exhaustively

  230. and whose revelation

  231. of himself

  232. confronted us

  233. with no mysteries

  234. whatsoever

  235. would be a God

  236. in man's image

  237. and, therefore,

  238. an imaginary God,

  239. not the God

  240. of the Bible at all.

  241. The problem's ours

  242. where we find

  243. these tensions

  244. and lack of understanding.

  245. So, my friends,

  246. since God puts

  247. his sovereignty

  248. and human responsibility

  249. together

  250. constantly

  251. in the Bible,

  252. then

  253. we should believe

  254. and accept,

  255. comma,

  256. even though

  257. we don't fully understand.

  258. Having said that,

  259. we move on

  260. to the second point.

  261. We can dig into the Bible

  262. and there's lots

  263. we can understand.

  264. And here,

  265. the point I want to make

  266. is that we should be

  267. instructed by the clear

  268. emphasis of Scripture.

  269. In other words,

  270. when you read the Bible

  271. just with an honest mind

  272. for comprehension,

  273. it will give us a lot

  274. to answer this question.

  275. And it goes like this.

  276. It appears that Christians

  277. have found an issue

  278. that Jesus himself

  279. had no sense of.

  280. And that's why

  281. I want to touch us down

  282. in John 17.

  283. Throughout his ministry,

  284. Jesus is up front

  285. about two things.

  286. Firstly,

  287. he's up front

  288. about God's

  289. absolute sovereignty

  290. in every step

  291. of salvation,

  292. every stage

  293. of salvation.

  294. We see that right

  295. through John's Gospel,

  296. particularly.

  297. But at the same time,

  298. we find Jesus

  299. in John 17

  300. praying

  301. and urging

  302. his disciples

  303. to evangelism.

  304. No problem for Jesus

  305. at that point.

  306. If you look at

  307. chapter 17,

  308. verses 2 through to 12,

  309. I don't have time

  310. to touch down

  311. in great detail,

  312. but you can just

  313. check it out

  314. on your own

  315. this afternoon

  316. if you're interested.

  317. In chapter 2

  318. through to 12,

  319. sorry,

  320. chapter 17,

  321. verses 2 through to 12,

  322. Jesus is reflecting

  323. on his sentness.

  324. He's very much aware

  325. that he's been sent

  326. into the world

  327. by his Father

  328. to achieve

  329. the Father's purposes,

  330. eternal purposes

  331. in salvation.

  332. To give eternal life

  333. to all those,

  334. and the language

  335. is in John 17,

  336. the language

  337. of God's sovereignty.

  338. He's been sent

  339. into the world

  340. to give life

  341. to all those

  342. that the Father

  343. has taken out

  344. of the world

  345. and given to Jesus.

  346. There's the language

  347. of election.

  348. And in verses 18

  349. through to 20,

  350. Jesus takes

  351. another step

  352. and the connection

  353. is this.

  354. Jesus says,

  355. Father,

  356. as you have sent

  357. me into the world

  358. to speak of your glory

  359. and your salvation,

  360. so I send

  361. all my saved people,

  362. this elect group.

  363. I then have brought them,

  364. or sorry,

  365. you've brought them

  366. out of the world

  367. and I'm sending them

  368. back into the world.

  369. Why?

  370. To speak

  371. about Jesus

  372. so that others

  373. might know

  374. Jesus

  375. and come into

  376. eternal life

  377. as they themselves

  378. have done.

  379. in other words,

  380. evangelism.

  381. Now friends,

  382. I just want to make

  383. this very simple point.

  384. Jesus prays

  385. for his disciples,

  386. for his people,

  387. and it's not just

  388. his disciples

  389. because he prays

  390. for those who have

  391. not yet

  392. become believers.

  393. He's praying

  394. right down

  395. through the generations

  396. as it were.

  397. Jesus prays

  398. for his people

  399. in the context

  400. of evangelism

  401. and in the context

  402. of God's

  403. absolute sovereignty

  404. and there's not

  405. a skerrick

  406. of embarrassment

  407. or tension.

  408. Now I realize

  409. that doesn't answer

  410. all the questions

  411. but it normalizes it,

  412. doesn't it?

  413. Because the same pattern,

  414. it's not just

  415. in John 17

  416. I find that.

  417. You can actually

  418. get a hold of that

  419. concordance

  420. and look through

  421. the whole of the Bible

  422. and you'll see

  423. this repeatedly.

  424. Same pattern

  425. across the whole Bible.

  426. In Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 4 chapter mention

  427. chapter 4

  428. that goes right back

  429. to God's people

  430. in the wilderness

  431. ready to go

  432. into the promised land

  433. and in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 4:5

  434. chapter 4

  435. verses 5 through to 8

  436. God makes clear

  437. essentially the same point

  438. that he wants,

  439. he tells his people

  440. that he expects them

  441. to go before

  442. all the nations

  443. and make clear

  444. to all the nations

  445. his sovereign power

  446. and loving character

  447. and the goodness

  448. of God's laws

  449. as the means

  450. to the good life.

  451. Why does God

  452. do that?

  453. So that all nations

  454. might know him

  455. and might have

  456. the opportunity

  457. to come and bow

  458. before him

  459. and serve him

  460. and worship him.

  461. Isaiah 66

    Isaiah 66:19

  462. verse 19

  463. and there's many

  464. many places

  465. between that.

  466. Isaiah 66

    Isaiah 66:19

  467. verse 19

  468. at the other end

  469. of the exodus

  470. the exile

  471. sorry exile

  472. I said

  473. I should have been

  474. exile not exodus

  475. the other end

  476. of the exile

  477. God's intent

  478. in that verse

  479. is very clearly

  480. to send survivors

  481. of the exile

  482. to the nations

  483. for what purpose?

  484. Nations that have not

  485. heard of his glory

  486. and his character

  487. and his works

  488. and God's sending

  489. he says

  490. I intend to send

  491. my people

  492. to those nations

  493. why?

  494. So that they might

  495. know of God's character

  496. and God's glory.

  497. Evangelism.

  498. Again in Luke chapter 24

    Luke 24:45–47

  499. verses 45 through 47

  500. you remember that

  501. just that little

  502. cameo

  503. with Jesus

  504. just before Jesus

  505. returns to heaven.

  506. and he's reminding

  507. his disciples

  508. of two things.

  509. Firstly he reminds

  510. his disciples

  511. that somebody's locked

  512. out there

  513. you need to open

  514. the door from the inside.

  515. He reminds his disciples

  516. of two things.

  517. Firstly that the Old Testament

  518. spoke clearly of him

  519. and anticipated his coming

  520. and that God's intention

  521. had always been

  522. secondly

  523. through his people

  524. to make known

  525. repentance

  526. and forgiveness

  527. of sin

  528. in Christ

  529. to all nations.

  530. There is no

  531. incompatibility

  532. in the scripture

  533. between God's

  534. absolute sovereignty

  535. and global

  536. sentness

  537. of his people

  538. to speak of God's glory

  539. to make his name known

  540. which is really

  541. what evangelism is.

  542. And friends

  543. I think if we move

  544. from there

  545. to look

  546. historically

  547. across the

  548. ages of the church

  549. that particular

  550. emphasis of scripture

  551. that sentness

  552. in the context

  553. of God's

  554. absolute sovereignty

  555. of God going

  556. before them

  557. as it were

  558. that has been

  559. the motivation

  560. for countless

  561. missionary movements

  562. over the generations.

  563. It's not been

  564. a detraction

  565. from missionary

  566. zeal

  567. it's been

  568. the motivation

  569. to it

  570. because God

  571. goes ahead of them

  572. because God

  573. has it

  574. even before

  575. they get there.

  576. They're not

  577. going in

  578. to a state

  579. of

  580. it being

  581. left up to

  582. themselves

  583. and their own

  584. efforts

  585. and their own

  586. cleverness

  587. and their own

  588. ability to articulate

  589. things, their own

  590. ability to identify

  591. wrong thinking

  592. in a person's

  593. heart and change

  594. their attitudes

  595. and desires.

  596. No, they go there

  597. because God

  598. is sovereign

  599. and God will do

  600. that.

  601. Their job is

  602. simply to take

  603. the gospel

  604. and speak it

  605. as God's

  606. intention always

  607. was for us

  608. people.

  609. Go and speak

  610. of my glory.

  611. And step again

  612. into the third

  613. point as we're

  614. thinking about this.

  615. So as we

  616. dig down into

  617. this, then I

  618. would say

  619. thirdly, we've

  620. got to be

  621. really careful

  622. as we

  623. sort of

  624. swim into

  625. this big

  626. issue not

  627. to confuse

  628. God's stuff

  629. with our

  630. stuff.

  631. Think of

  632. two sides

  633. of one coin.

  634. Two sides

  635. of one coin

  636. are inseparable

  637. but different.

  638. We'll get

  639. ourselves in a

  640. tangle if we

  641. don't know

  642. which side of

  643. the coin

  644. we're dealing

  645. with.

  646. God's stuff

  647. and our

  648. stuff.

  649. How does

  650. that work?

  651. Well, let me

  652. tell you what

  653. God's stuff

  654. is.

  655. God's stuff

  656. is what

  657. describes God's

  658. character and

  659. activity in

  660. his world.

  661. In classic

  662. theological terms,

  663. these are called

  664. the secret decrees

  665. of God.

  666. The secret

  667. decrees of God.

  668. Now, these are

  669. things and

  670. they're often

  671. the why of

  672. God's actions.

  673. These are

  674. things which

  675. we cannot

  676. understand fully

  677. at points

  678. because we

  679. cannot fathom

  680. the mind of

  681. God and

  682. at points

  683. because God

  684. simply hasn't

  685. told us.

  686. They're the

  687. secret things

  688. of God which

  689. you cannot

  690. understand but

  691. which are

  692. nevertheless

  693. true because

  694. God says

  695. they're true.

  696. For example,

  697. in this golden

  698. chain of

  699. salvation,

  700. we are simply

  701. told by God

  702. that he in

  703. eternity past

  704. has elected

  705. or set his

  706. love upon a

  707. specific group

  708. of people and

  709. determined that

  710. they would be

  711. saved.

  712. God just

  713. makes that

  714. statement.

  715. But immediately

  716. we realize

  717. there's so much

  718. about that

  719. process that

  720. we simply do

  721. not know

  722. and cannot

  723. understand.

  724. but in

  725. that God

  726. tells us

  727. what he does

  728. want us to

  729. know.

  730. He tells

  731. us that

  732. he does

  733. what he

  734. wants

  735. because he

  736. does have

  737. sovereign power

  738. and nobody

  739. can challenge

  740. him or limit

  741. him.

  742. And he

  743. tells us

  744. alongside that

  745. that his

  746. purpose in

  747. salvation is

  748. to display

  749. his grace,

  750. mercy and

  751. manifold wisdom

  752. with a

  753. multitude so

  754. great that no

  755. man can number

  756. them to use a

  757. picture of

  758. revelation.

  759. Being brought

  760. from death to

  761. life.

  762. A multitude

  763. so great that

  764. deserves judgment

  765. and condemnation

  766. being pardoned

  767. and restored.

  768. That's what God

  769. tells us his

  770. purpose is in it.

  771. And we still

  772. can't understand

  773. how it works.

  774. God wants

  775. this great

  776. community across

  777. the world that

  778. will respond to

  779. him in praise and

  780. worship and

  781. obedience.

  782. And we still

  783. can't understand

  784. how it all

  785. works or why

  786. God has

  787. chosen the way

  788. he's chosen.

  789. That's God's

  790. stuff.

  791. And dare I

  792. say, like

  793. as a parent

  794. I've said to

  795. my children so

  796. many times over

  797. the years,

  798. it's none of

  799. your business.

  800. What is very

  801. clear is what I

  802. want you to

  803. do.

  804. Don't you worry

  805. about the rest

  806. of it.

  807. That's up to

  808. mammon may

  809. to sort.

  810. Have you said

  811. that to your

  812. children?

  813. There you go,

  814. you've answered

  815. your own

  816. question.

  817. The other

  818. side of the

  819. coin is our

  820. stuff.

  821. Words or

  822. commands,

  823. commands directed

  824. clearly to

  825. people,

  826. describing our

  827. character,

  828. describing the

  829. activity that

  830. the Lord

  831. intends us to

  832. have, and

  833. describing our

  834. proper response

  835. to God.

  836. So, I want

  837. you to do

  838. this, says

  839. the Lord.

  840. I want you to

  841. do that, says

  842. Jesus.

  843. Now, here's the

  844. point, and this

  845. is a really,

  846. really important

  847. point.

  848. Never in

  849. scripture that I

  850. can find, and

  851. if you want to

  852. argue with me,

  853. please wait to

  854. the end of the

  855. sermon, don't

  856. embarrass me

  857. now, but as

  858. far as I can

  859. see, never in

  860. scripture are

  861. we asked to

  862. respond on the

  863. basis of God's

  864. stuff, or

  865. God's secret

  866. decrees.

  867. We are only

  868. ever asked to

  869. respond on the

  870. basis of our

  871. stuff, on the

  872. basis of God's

  873. commands, on the

  874. basis of what God

  875. tells us and makes

  876. clear.

  877. God's secret.

  878. And Christ

  879. commands us to

  880. evangelize.

  881. Matthew 28, verse

    Matthew 28:19

  882. 19, the Great

  883. Commission.

  884. Simple, isn't

  885. it?

  886. The apostles also

  887. taught and modeled

  888. evangelism.

  889. Again, these

  890. passages are listed,

  891. so I'm not going to

  892. even go to them.

  893. You can check them

  894. out for yourself

  895. later.

  896. 1 Corinthians 5,

  897. 11 to 21.

  898. Paul speaks at

  899. length about being

  900. entrusted with the

  901. ministry of

  902. reconciliation.

  903. That is, to go

  904. and speak to

  905. people, to argue,

  906. to persuade, to

  907. reason, to draw

  908. people, to listen

  909. to the truth of

  910. the gospel that

  911. salvation has

  912. found in no one

  913. else except Jesus.

  914. His motivation?

  915. The compelling

  916. love of Jesus.

  917. Not election, not

  918. predestination, not

  919. a theological

  920. treatise does he

  921. go to these people

  922. with.

  923. It goes because of

  924. the compelling love

  925. of Jesus.

  926. That's our stuff.

  927. And the task of

  928. evangelism, my

  929. friends, of being

  930. witnesses of

  931. salvation in Jesus,

  932. is never

  933. described as a

  934. call to explain

  935. the detailed

  936. workings of

  937. election.

  938. Never, ever.

  939. is a call to

  940. explain God's

  941. effectual call by

  942. which he

  943. mysteriously acts

  944. within a person,

  945. takes the gospel

  946. message to hear and

  947. mysteriously acts

  948. within a person to

  949. renew them and give

  950. them life.

  951. No.

  952. Never in those

  953. terms.

  954. Paul's ministry of

  955. reconciliation, the

  956. focus was on sin,

  957. the need for

  958. repentance, the

  959. reality of

  960. forgiveness in

  961. Christ, a new

  962. life.

  963. Salvation is found

  964. in no one else

  965. but Jesus.

  966. That's our

  967. stuff.

  968. And likewise,

  969. Christ commands

  970. us to pray.

  971. Many, many

  972. verses.

  973. 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 5:17

  974. 5, verse 17,

  975. only one.

  976. Pray continually,

  977. pray urgently.

  978. to command.

  979. And again, John 17,

  980. Christ modeled that

  981. command in his own

  982. ministry.

  983. Friends, we may never

  984. or we may not

  985. understand fully how

  986. and why God does it

  987. this way.

  988. but that's God's

  989. business.

  990. Our business is to

  991. get on with the

  992. task of what God

  993. has called us to

  994. and made clean to us.

  995. That is, get on with

  996. the task of being

  997. witnesses, being my

  998. witnesses, of telling

  999. anyone who will listen

  1000. of their need for

  1001. Christ and praying

  1002. urgently that the

  1003. Lord will actually

  1004. open their hearts to

  1005. hear those words of

  1006. Christ so they

  1007. become real and so

  1008. that person might be

  1009. swept into the

  1010. kingdom and enjoy

  1011. a new life.

  1012. And the fourth step

  1013. then in that is,

  1014. and in my mind

  1015. these sort of follow

  1016. on but maybe not

  1017. in the presentation

  1018. but in my mind

  1019. we take another step

  1020. and we say, well,

  1021. we need to remember

  1022. then that God

  1023. determines both what

  1024. will happen and how

  1025. it will happen.

  1026. God determines not

  1027. only that a specific

  1028. group called the

  1029. elect will be saved,

  1030. he also determines

  1031. how they will be

  1032. saved.

  1033. He provides the means

  1034. by which they will

  1035. be saved.

1036. So God sets his love

  1037. on this group we

  1038. call the elect before

  1039. eternity.

  1040. That's the what or

1041. that a group will be

  1042. saved.

  1043. then he determines,

  1044. provides the means,

  1045. the how.

  1046. What does he do?

  1047. He sends Jesus to

  1048. redeem.

  1049. He sends his Holy

  1050. Spirit to renew.

  1051. Again, we can push

  1052. back so far but

  1053. ultimately we have to

  1054. say, well, we don't

  1055. understand why God

  1056. does it this way.

1057. But it's clear that he

  1058. does.

  1059. And at that point,

  1060. there's a mix

  1061. between God's stuff

  1062. and our stuff.

  1063. And at that point,

  1064. it's so terribly,

  1065. terribly important to

  1066. know which one we're

  1067. dealing with, which one

  1068. we're addressing.

  1069. In Romans chapter 10,

    Romans 10:14

  1070. verse 14,

  1071. Paul talks there about

  1072. preaching the gospel.

1073. And he says that our

  1074. work as Christians is

  1075. like the work of

  1076. Messiah.

  1077. We're drawn into the

  1078. work of Messiah.

  1079. How beautiful are the

1080. feet of those who bring

  1081. glad tidings and good

  1082. news.

  1083. That's the work of

  1084. Messiah.

  1085. Preaching or declaring

  1086. the gospel is the

  1087. appointed means of

  1088. working out God's

  1089. purposes in salvation.

  1090. How will they believe

  1091. unless somebody tells

  1092. them, says Paul.

1093. How does it all fit

  1094. together?

1095. Why does God do it

  1096. like that?

1097. Why does God draw us

  1098. into his purposes in

  1099. salvation?

1100. I'd have to ask some of

  1101. my colleagues for the

  1102. answer to that one.

  1103. I have no idea.

1104. I might know one day

  1105. when I'm in heaven,

  1106. but I might not.

1107. The same point is made

  1108. in 2 Thessalonians 2,

  1109. 13 and 14,

  1110. Acts 18,

  1111. 1 Corinthians 1,

1112. and a plethora of other

  1113. places across the New

  1114. Testament.

  1115. God has determined that

1116. those he intends to save

  1117. will actually come to

  1118. salvation in response to

  1119. what?

1120. In response to one of his

  1121. people actually gossiping

  1122. the gospel to them.

1123. I mean, imagine that for

  1124. goodness sake, that here's

  1125. God's sovereign plan and

  1126. purpose from all eternity,

1127. one eternity to the other

1128. eternity, all put in place

1129. and somehow or other, for

1130. some reason or other, God

1131. uses us as a means by which

1132. people will hear the gospel

1133. and, as it were, trigger that

1134. process by which the spirit

1135. will take those words and

1136. make them real in the heart

1137. and mind of the person we

  1138. speak to.

  1139. Phenomenal, isn't it?

1140. How can we sort of encapsulate

  1141. that?

1142. That that's what the scripture

  1143. leads us to.

1144. Sometimes it will require, as

1145. Paul says, sometimes it will

  1146. require reasoning, debating,

  1147. persuading, using all our

  1148. God-given abilities and

1149. talents to make the gospel

1150. message that we want to say

  1151. to people winsome, compelling.

1152. Speaking to people who might

1153. at first be reluctant to hear.

1154. Speaking to people that, from

1155. our human logic point of view,

1156. is a waste of time to speak to

1157. because clearly we can see that

1158. they're not suitable for the

  1159. gospel.

1160. They're too dead in their sin.

  1161. Friends, rather than election

1162. being a reason not to evangelize,

  1163. it's quite the opposite.

  1164. God's sovereignty is the

  1165. greatest encouragement to

  1166. persevere in declaring the

1167. gospel to our family, friends,

  1168. and world at large.

  1169. God's sovereignty is the

  1170. greatest encouragement to

  1171. persevere in prayer.

  1172. God's sovereignty is the

1173. gospel to anybody I can find

1174. who will listen to me.

1175. And let God do his stuff.

1176. Change people from the inside

  1177. out.

1178. Not my place to decide if he

1179. should speak, you know, change

1180. that person and not that person

1181. or change them all or change

  1182. none of them.

1183. I'm to get on with my stuff.

  1184. Why?

  1185. Why preach?

  1186. Why speak the gospel?

  1187. Why pray?

1188. Well, because it's the means by

  1189. which God will actually

1190. effect the salvation of those

  1191. he set apart.

1192. God's purpose will be achieved.

1193. God's purpose will be achieved.

1194. And that's guaranteed with the end

1195. result that God's cause will

  1196. triumph.

1197. God's purpose will be achieved

1198. and he will be praised and he

1199. will be honored as he deserves to

  1200. be.

  1201. What's faithfulness in evangelism?

1202. It's actually not seeing people

1203. converted, which is what we've

1204. sort of pushed to believe these

  1205. days in modern evangelicalism.

  1206. That's not evangelism, faithfulness

  1207. in evangelism.

  1208. Oh, faithfulness in evangelism

1209. is speaking as clearly and truly

1210. the gospel of the Lord Jesus

  1211. Christ and salvation

  1212. finding none else.

  1213. That's faithfulness in evangelism.

1214. A person could do that all their

1215. life and not see anybody

  1216. converted.

  1217. That would be faithful.

  1218. Because that's our stuff.

1219. And we've got to learn to let God

  1220. do his stuff.

1221. as he's promised he would do.

1222. And as we see evidence of him

1223. doing around us here this morning.

1224. And the same applies to prayer.

1225. You look at Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

1226. Paul launches into a very, very

1227. confident prayer in verses 15 and

  1228. following for the Ephesians.

1229. Now what's the motivation to his

  1230. prayer?

1231. Well, he's just finished rehearsing

  1232. God's salvation bundle.

1233. He's got his mind full of God's

  1234. sovereignty and salvation

  1235. from start to finish.

1236. And it's with that he launches

1237. into prayer for the believers

  1238. at Ephesus.

  1239. Why?

1240. Why does Paul pray in response to

  1241. that?

1242. Because he understands that prayer

1243. is not about changing God's mind.

1244. Changing God's plan for his people

  1245. and his world.

1246. If that was the case, then prayer

1247. is a waste of time.

  1248. But Paul prays because

  1249. he recognizes that prayer

1250. is a means of accomplishing

1251. what God has really purposed

  1252. and planned.

1253. Paul's prayer is asking the Lord

1254. to do what he's already purposed

1255. to do in their lives.

1256. And that's why prayer is worth

  1257. praying.

  1258. We're not twisting God's arm.

  1259. We're not wrestling blessings

  1260. out of a God who's reluctant

  1261. to give blessing.

1262. We're asking God to do

1263. what he's promised to do.

1264. And God loves to hear his children.

1265. It's an act of honor in itself

  1266. when we say,

1267. Lord, we know your character

1268. and we're asking you now

1269. to do what you've promised to do.

  1270. And in brackets,

1271. we're asking you to do

1272. what we know we could never do

1273. in this person I'm praying for.

  1274. My friends,

  1275. since it's a gospel message

  1276. that God will use

1277. to bring people to salvation,

  1278. since God alone

  1279. can resurrect

  1280. dead people

1281. by a secret inner working

  1282. of a spirit,

1283. since those two things are true,

1284. then as a church family,

1285. we ought to be noted

  1286. above all else

1287. as being a people of prayer

1288. and a people of speaking,

  1289. a people of sentness.

  1290. Great programs operating

  1291. within our church

  1292. are terrific.

  1293. Extending into the community

  1294. even better.

  1295. A united and radically

  1296. countercultural community here

  1297. is essential,

  1298. compelling

1299. as the world looks at us.

  1300. But nothing replaces

  1301. the centrality

  1302. of the words spoken

  1303. and prayer.

  1304. They're the means

  1305. by which God

  1306. will save his people.

  1307. The rest is bling,

  1308. as it were,

  1309. on the side.

1310. It will make it look

  1311. more attractive

  1312. and appealing

  1313. and compelling.

1314. It will make it look authentic.

1315. But at the end of the day,

  1316. the means of people

  1317. being converted

1318. is when we speak the gospel.

1319. We don't have to reinvent

  1320. the wheel.

1321. We don't have to be

  1322. keeping ahead

  1323. of the current trends,

1324. being seen to be cool,

1325. being seen to be novel.

  1326. We just speak

1327. the truth of the gospel

  1328. and we pray.

  1329. Lord,

  1330. make this word true

1331. in the life of this person

  1332. I've just spoken to.

1333. bring them into your kingdom,

  1334. Lord,

  1335. as you've brought me

  1336. into the kingdom

  1337. through your word.

  1338. And in the end,

  1339. you know,

  1340. it's more important

1341. for us as a church family

  1342. that we're pleading

  1343. with our Father

  1344. to make effect

  1345. of our words

1346. as we speak the gospel.

  1347. That's more important

1348. than it is for us

  1349. directly to try

  1350. and persuade

  1351. any given sinner

1352. of their need for Jesus.

  1353. The second one's

  1354. not unimportant,

1355. but the other one's primary.

  1356. But of course,

  1357. we do both,

  1358. knowing that this

  1359. honors the Lord

1360. and will be the means

1361. by which our secular family

  1362. and workmates

  1363. will be saved.

  1364. You've got family members

  1365. not converted like me

  1366. to break your heart,

1367. you long to see them,

  1368. respond to Jesus.

  1369. Do you wonder why,

  1370. as I do,

  1371. why four siblings

  1372. respond to Jesus

  1373. and the fifth one

  1374. is hostile?

  1375. I have no idea

  1376. how it works.

  1377. But I continue

  1378. to ask the Lord

  1379. to use his word

  1380. to make

  1381. my other brother

  1382. alive in Christ

1383. as he's made me alive

  1384. in Christ.

  1385. I'll let God

  1386. do his business

  1387. because only God

  1388. can do his business

  1389. in my brother's life.

  1390. I'll just be content

  1391. to do my business.

  1392. Let me pray.

  1393. Lord,

  1394. these are

  1395. perplexing questions

  1396. for us

  1397. and questions,

  1398. Lord,

  1399. sometimes that

  1400. we allow to become

  1401. bigger in our minds

1402. than they ought to be.

  1403. And sometimes,

  1404. Lord,

  1405. we allow tensions

  1406. to debilitate us

  1407. or even derail us

  1408. in a way

  1409. they should never.

  1410. Help us,

  1411. Lord,

  1412. to both

  1413. have inquiring minds

  1414. for your gospel

  1415. and your Bible,

  1416. Lord,

  1417. is sufficient

  1418. to

  1419. take on

  1420. the

  1421. most robust

  1422. of inquiries

  1423. from any

  1424. of your people.

  1425. And yet,

  1426. Lord,

  1427. we also pray

  1428. you might give us

  1429. believing hearts

  1430. so that we might

  1431. actively move

  1432. and hold

  1433. to things

  1434. we don't fully understand.

1435. I pray in Jesus' name.

  1436. Amen.

  1437. Thank you very much

  1438. for listening to me.

  1439. Thank you.
