  1. Morning, church family.

  2. As Dave said, we're going to be hearing from Proverbs chapter 24,

    Proverbs 24 chapter mention

  3. and we're going to be starting at the start of the chapter

  4. and reading through to verse 12.

  5. That's Proverbs 24.

  6. Be not envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them,

  7. for their hearts devise violence and their lips talk of trouble.

  8. By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established.

  9. By knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches,

  10. a wise man is full of strength, and a man of knowledge enhances his might.

  11. For by wise guidance you can wage your war,

  12. and in abundance of counsellors there is victory.

  13. Wisdom is too high for a fool.

  14. In the gate he does not open his mouth.

  15. Whoever plans to do evil will be called a schemer.

  16. The devising of folly is sin,

  17. and the scoffer is an abomination to mankind.

  18. If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small.

  19. Rescue those who are being taken away to death.

  20. Hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter.

  21. If you say, behold, we do not know this,

  22. does not he who weighs the heart perceive it?

  23. Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it?

  24. And will he not repay man according to his work?

  25. Good morning everyone.

  26. It's school lady time, so we are back to the book of Proverbs.

  27. The book of Proverbs is a bit difficult in a sense,

  28. talking about it because it sounds like a lot of how to do things,

  29. or how to live a good life.

  30. However, we need to see that it's not only teaching us

  31. that the wise way to live.

  32. However, more so is to tell us that we don't have that wisdom,

  33. and we can't live out to what he's teaching us.

  34. But God does provide us a way for us to do so.

  35. Last week, if you remember,

  36. we were talking about wise with money or in money,

  37. in Proverbs 11, verse 3 says that,

    Proverbs 11:3

  38. it would say that,

  39. riches does not profit in the day of wrath.

  40. Today, in Proverbs 24, verse 10,

    Proverbs 24:10

  41. if you faint in the day of adversity.

  42. So both of them have got this day of wrath,

  43. or the day of adversity.

  44. So today, we would think about how we would stand in that day,

  45. or in day-to-day as well.

  46. Let's pray first before we start.

  47. Almighty God,

  48. we thank you for the privilege of reading your word,

  49. and knowing something that is greater,

  50. and knowing that we could have a life that is different,

  51. that we have always lived,

  52. and also knowing that in adversity,

  53. we are not alone.

  54. May you help us in understanding this,

  55. and may you help us to live a life that is worthy of your calling.

  56. Thank you, Lord.

  57. We pray in Jesus' name.

  58. Amen.

  59. I'm going to share the screen while I'm talking.

  60. So today, the topic is,

  61. Why is in adversity?

  62. From Proverbs 24, verses 1 to 12.

    Proverbs 24:1–12

  63. First of all, I'd like to share with you about this man called Rick Ritzkohler.

  64. Rick Ritzkohler was born on 27th of May, 1939,

  65. and he died on 11th of September, 2001.

  66. So about 20 years ago.

  67. He was the head of security for Morgan Stanley in the South Tower of World Trade Center,

  68. when both the North and the South Towers were hit by plans.

  69. Before the towers collapsed, Rick called the authority,

  70. and he was told to stay put,

  71. and not to evacuate.

  72. But Rick did not agree.

  73. He called his old army mate,

  74. and that's why we know what he was thinking,

  75. and told him what happened.

  76. And he said he was going to disregard the order to stay,

  77. and he evacuated the building.

  78. So because of Rick's quick and decisive action,

  79. 2,687 people were saved.

  80. Only six persons from the South Tower died on that day,

  81. including Rick himself.

  82. Why did Rick disregard the order?

  83. Because he had been expecting such an attack for some time.

  84. In fact, he had conducted many evacuation drills

  85. for the employees in the South Tower.

  86. So in that day of adversity,

  87. Rick was the first to act,

  88. and the last to leave the building.

  89. Don't you wish that we would have such strength

  90. to stand on our ground

  91. and act in the face of adversity?

  92. I do.

  93. However, we know that this is rare.

  94. In real life, in our life,

  95. we are usually unprepared for adversity,

  96. and we try to avoid it

  97. or not know how to cope with it.

  98. So we go to Proverbs 24.10 as our words for our day.

  99. It is to faince in the day of adversity.

  100. Your strength is small.

  101. Faince, in the Hebrew word,

  102. has the meaning of dropping down or letting go.

  103. And in the Old Testament,

  104. when God reassured His servants

  105. that He would not forsake them or fail them,

  106. this word was used.

  107. So Proverbs 24.10 can be translated as,

  108. if you give up easily in the day of adversity,

  109. your strength is small.

  110. However, verse 5 tells us that

  111. a wise man is full of strength.

  112. So that means,

  113. verse 10,

  114. we can also understand it as,

  115. if you have little wisdom,

  116. you will not have sufficient strength

  117. to stand in the day of adversity.

  118. So an adverse event

  119. is one that challenges our presuppositions,

  120. disrupts our plans,

  121. and dashes our hopes,

  122. as David shared just now.

  123. Adversity happens all the time.

  124. It is an double-double,

  125. and it will come for each of us.

  126. So adversity is common.

  127. I see people facing adversities every workday.

  128. For example,

  129. one day last month,

  130. I had three different patients

  131. coming in one after another

  132. with sadness.

  133. The first one was sad

  134. because all her adult children

  135. did not want to talk to her.

  136. She said everyone was rude to her.

  137. The second patient was sad

  138. because his driving license

  139. had been changed to a conditional one.

  140. He's about 80 years old.

  141. He used to drive army trucks in ANZAC.

  142. He wanted to be able to continue to do so.

  143. He asked me to remove his sleep apnea

  144. from the list of his medical conditions

  145. so that he can get his full license back.

  146. The third patient had been sad

  147. for more than a year

  148. since the death of her partner.

  149. She did not know what else to live for.

  150. Sometimes I think,

  151. if these patients had been given

  152. wise counsel during their younger days,

  153. they may not have ended up where they are now.

  154. But then I think again,

  155. most of us will only listen to counsels

  156. which agree with our desires.

  157. These patients are suffering now

  158. because they are stuck in their own presuppositions

  159. of what life should be

  160. and they just could not get out of it.

  161. So, we're talking about the nature of adversities

  162. that is common

  163. and then we'll talk about unavoidable

  164. and that is coming for each of us.

  165. Alright.

  166. We're still in the common part of it.

  167. I wonder how the first patient

  168. built her family

  169. until all her children

  170. did not want to talk to her.

  171. Her presupposition was that

  172. she had done all her best

  173. for her children.

  174. She had built her house well

  175. and filled the rooms

  176. with good things for her children.

  177. She could not understand

  178. why all her children dislike her now.

  179. The second patient

  180. has nothing else to live for

  181. except his being able to drive

  182. an army vehicle during the ANZE parade.

  183. He does not cope with the adversity

  184. of not having a full driving license.

  185. The third patient lost her partner to cancer.

  186. She could not get herself out of her grief.

  187. As a result, her teenage daughter

  188. has now also become depressed

  189. and she actually tried to commit suicide.

  190. This patient's identity

  191. was dependent on her partner

  192. while her daughter's identity

  193. was based on these two adults.

  194. They were not able to face

  195. the adversity they found themselves in.

  196. All these three patients

  197. had been building their lives

  198. expecting favorable outcomes

  199. like many of us.

  200. They put their trust and hope

  201. on weak and transient things or persons.

  202. Some of us may be able to identify

  203. with one or more of these patients.

  204. Some of us may go through

  205. similar adversities in time to come.

  206. Some of us are preparing ourselves

  207. for the future.

  208. So we try to avoid having such adversity.

  209. We will try to get the best qualification

  210. for ourselves

  211. to get the best job

  212. or get the best spouse.

  213. However, we cannot predict the future.

  214. What we think is best now

  215. may turn out to be the source

  216. of our adversity

  217. in years to come.

  218. Adversity is unavoidable

  219. not only because we cannot predict the future

  220. but because we are building our life

  221. on false presuppositions.

  222. The first patient thought

  223. that she could always derive

  224. her security and significance

  225. from her children.

  226. Eventually, her children would

  227. become tired of being

  228. their mother's emotional support.

  229. They would resent

  230. their mother's constant dependence on them.

  231. The second patient

  232. derives his security and significance

  233. from his achievement

  234. in the defense force.

  235. He cannot accept the fact

  236. that he has become too frail

  237. to drive an army vehicle.

  238. The third patient

  239. builds her security and significance

  240. on her partner.

  241. When her partner dies before her,

  242. she does not know

  243. how to cope with life.

  244. We live in a world of decay

  245. and disruptions.

  246. In the past 50 years,

  247. we have lived through

  248. the Cold War,

  249. the Terrorist War,

  250. Global Financial Crisis,

  251. Multiple Natural Disasters,

  252. and now the Pandemic.

  253. And if we are honest

  254. in finding the causes

  255. of adversities,

  256. we shall find that

  257. many of the adversities

  258. are the results

  259. of our own foolishness.

  260. Our ill health

  261. is caused by our lifestyle

  262. choices and habits.

  263. So,

  264. things that we like to eat now

  265. many a times

  266. as we get older

  267. they will be the source

  268. of our illness.

  269. Our pollution,

  270. the pollution of the environment

  271. is caused by our desire

  272. for comfort and enjoyment.

  273. So,

  274. we are using a lot of

  275. technologies and things

  276. and we don't know

  277. how to dispose of them.

  278. the relationship breakdowns

  279. are caused by our own

  280. self-centeredness.

  281. So,

  282. we all are so

  283. busy

  284. to achieve our own goals

  285. and the cost of doing it

  286. we neglected

  287. relating to people

  288. or even neglected

  289. on health

  290. to do exercise.

  291. all these things

  292. that we do

  293. we are just so focused

  294. on our goal

  295. that

  296. not knowing that

  297. in the end

  298. they would bring

  299. adversity to us.

  300. In the past few weeks

  301. almost every day

  302. in my general practice

  303. I'm seeing patients

  304. who are struggling

  305. with whether to have

  306. the AstraZeneca

  307. COVID vaccine.

  308. they fear getting

  309. the rare side effects

  310. of the vaccine

  311. they also fear

  312. getting the real disease.

  313. We are not only foolish

  314. in the way we live

  315. that lead to future

  316. adverse events

  317. but we are also

  318. too weak to face

  319. any adverse events.

  320. I feel for their

  321. anxiety and their pain

  322. we all want to

  323. avoid adversity

  324. but it is unavoidable

  325. because the future

  326. does not usually turn up

  327. as we hoped we would

  328. and also because

  329. the choices we make

  330. now usually

  331. predispose us

  332. to encounter adversity

  333. in time to come.

  334. So adversity will come

  335. for all of us

  336. and Proverbs 24

  337. does not actually say

  338. we are too weak

  339. to face adversity

  340. but it says

  341. we are too weak

  342. to face the day

  343. of adversity.

  344. The day of adversity

  345. seems to be pointing

  346. to more than just

  347. any day

  348. that we may find ourselves

  349. in some encounters

  350. of adversity.

  351. In verse 11 and 12

  352. it is saying that

  353. there is a day

  354. when we will need

  355. to give an account

  356. of our life.

  357. The account

  358. emphasizes on

  359. how we have

  360. or have not

  361. helped others

  362. who are facing adversity.

  363. During the accounting

  364. time

  365. it says that

  366. we would

  367. mostly

  368. have no excuse

  369. for our behaviors.

  370. at this point

  371. we might want

  372. to pause and ask

  373. why God

  374. requires us

  375. to help others.

  376. Is it not enough

  377. if we just do

  378. no harm to others

  379. just keep to ourselves?

  380. The role

  381. that God has

  382. in mind

  383. is a role

  384. that shows

  385. love and kindness.

  386. All of us

  387. like to be welcome

  388. when we meet up

  389. with people

  390. even as we meet

  391. online.

  392. Even though

  393. we may not be able

  394. to love others

  395. we like to be loved

  396. by others.

  397. Most of the adversities

  398. we encounter

  399. are caused by

  400. our lack of ability

  401. and desire

  402. to love others.

  403. If there is love

  404. among people

  405. there will be less

  406. conflicts

  407. and oppressions.

  408. Even we ourselves

  409. demand

  410. love and kindness

  411. among the people.

  412. Would God

  413. not require us

  414. to live such a life

  415. when we are

  416. created in His image?

  417. Proverbs 24

  418. implies that

  419. we are not

  420. strong enough

  421. to help others

  422. and that

  423. we are not

  424. even strong enough

  425. to help ourselves

  426. to face adversities.

  427. To have strength

  428. we need to

  429. have wisdom.

  430. Wisdom

  431. means the ability

  432. to see a bigger picture

  433. and the ability

  434. to suffer loss.

  435. Rick Raskola

  436. understood

  437. the bigger picture

  438. of the threat

  439. of terrorism

  440. and therefore

  441. he was prepared

  442. for the attack.

  443. We need to

  444. understand

  445. the bigger picture

  446. of our life

  447. and the universe

  448. to know what

  449. to expect in life.

  450. However,

  451. we cannot understand

  452. the bigger picture

  453. of life

  454. because we are

  455. too self-focused.

  456. We can only see

  457. things from our own

  458. points of view.

  459. We are the center

  460. of our own universe.

  461. The aim of our living

  462. is to keep ourselves

  463. comfortable and happy.

  464. When things

  465. do not turn out

  466. as we want them to

  467. we can only respond

  468. with anger

  469. and despair.

  470. So how do we

  471. face adversity?

  472. I would suggest

  473. two things.

  474. One is knowing

  475. the bigger picture.

  476. Second is to know

  477. the one who

  478. was born for

  479. adversity.

  480. Before Rick Raskola

  481. went down

  482. with the South Tower

  483. he called his wife

  484. and told her

  485. that he loved her

  486. and that she should

  487. know that he was

  488. doing what he lived

  489. for.

  490. Rick was not

  491. suffering in the

  492. face of adversity.

  493. He was prepared

  494. for this

  495. and the threat

  496. of death

  497. did not frighten

  498. him or weaken

  499. him.

  500. The threat of death

  501. made him more

  502. resolved to save

  503. as many people

  504. as he could

  505. in the short time

  506. he had.

  507. Because Rick was

  508. prepared,

  509. he knew the

  510. bigger picture.

  511. He knew what

  512. was coming

  513. and he was

  514. prepared to

  515. die for it.

  516. What is the

  517. bigger picture

  518. for your life

  519. and my life?

  520. We cannot see

  521. this bigger picture

  522. unless it is

  523. revealed to us.

  524. This bigger picture

  525. we are talking

  526. about is not

  527. even to do

  528. with our world

  529. in terms of

  530. our day-to-day

  531. life.

  532. It is more

  533. than that.

  534. It is for

  535. the eternity.

  536. We need to

  537. know where

  538. we are heading

  539. to, where

  540. we are coming

  541. from.

  542. In the

  543. reading of

  544. Proverbs today,

  545. there is some

  546. truth that has

  547. been revealed

  548. to us.

  549. That is,

  550. there will be

  551. a day for us

  552. to give an

  553. account of

  554. our life.

  555. In that day,

  556. we will not

  557. have any

  558. excuse about

  559. why we do

  560. not do

  561. what is right.

  562. So,

  563. that has been

  564. revealed and

  565. so what are

  566. we going to

  567. do about it?

  568. So,

  569. compared to

  570. this day of

  571. adversity,

  572. when we face

  573. the judgment

  574. of God,

  575. our day-to-day

  576. encounters

  577. are small

  578. things.

  579. Unless we

  580. can stand

  581. before God's

  582. judgment throne

  583. without

  584. fainting,

  585. there is not

  586. much point

  587. for us to

  588. learn how to

  589. cope with

  590. our day-to-day

  591. adversities.

  592. On the other

  593. hand,

  594. if we can

  595. face the

  596. day of

  597. judgment,

  598. then we

  599. will know

  600. how to

  601. face our

  602. day-to-day

  603. adverse

  604. encounters.

  605. So,

  606. God reveals

  607. to us about

  608. the bigger

  609. picture of

  610. life through

  611. His written

  612. word,

  613. and also

  614. through the

  615. word

  616. becoming

  617. flesh,

  618. as He

  619. sent His

  620. Son into

  621. this world

  622. of adversity

  623. to live

  624. among us.

  625. So,

  626. while we

  627. try to

  628. avoid

  629. adversity,

  630. Jesus was

  631. born for

  632. adversity.

  633. In Luke

    Luke 2:34–35

  634. chapter 2,

  635. verse 34

  636. to 35,

  637. we read,

  638. We

  639. all expect

  640. ourselves and

  641. our children

  642. to live a

  643. life of

  644. comfort.

  645. Jesus'

  646. parents were

  647. told not to

  648. expect such

  649. a life for

  650. Him, for

  651. Jesus.

  652. Jesus Himself

  653. did not

  654. care if

  655. He had

  656. a life

  657. of comfort.

  658. He came

  659. for a

  660. mission.

  661. He came

  662. to live

  663. by the

  664. word and

  665. the will

  666. of God.

  667. So,

  668. we can

  669. look at

  670. Jesus'

  671. life and

  672. how it

  673. fits into

  674. Proverbs

  675. 24.

  676. Jesus did

  677. not envy

  678. the ways

  679. of the

  680. world.

  681. He

  682. actually

  683. criticized

  684. those

  685. who were

  686. in power.

  687. He

  688. was

  689. therefore

  690. hated

  691. by those

  692. who were

  693. in power.

  694. Those

  695. who could

  696. not

  697. tolerate

  698. the

  699. godly

  700. way

  701. Jesus

  702. lived

  703. His

  704. life

  705. devised

  706. violence.

  707. They

  708. wanted

  709. to

  710. kill

  711. Jesus.

  712. So,

  713. that is

  714. the

  715. reader from

  716. Proverbs

  717. 24,

  718. 1-2.

  719. Jesus

  720. was not

  721. intimidated

  722. by all

  723. the

  724. oppositions

  725. and threats.

  726. He

  727. was not

  728. tempted

  729. by the

  730. offer

  731. of the

  732. devil.

  733. Proverbs

  734. 24,

  735. 5.

  736. He

  737. listened

  738. to the

  739. counsel

  740. of

  741. God.

  742. Proverbs

  743. 24,

  744. 6.

  745. He

  746. was

  747. building

  748. God's

  749. kingdom,

  750. calling

  751. people to

  752. follow

  753. Him.

  754. So,

  755. Jesus

  756. is building

  757. something that

  758. is eternal.

  759. and He

  760. filled

  761. all the

  762. room

  763. with

  764. all the

  765. precious

  766. things,

  767. spiritual

  768. things.

  769. At last,

  770. Jesus

  771. was

  772. arrested

  773. by the

  774. religious

  775. leaders,

  776. those

  777. leaders who

  778. thought they

  779. were wise

  780. but had

  781. no idea

  782. what Jesus

  783. had been

  784. teaching.

  785. Real wisdom

  786. was too

  787. high for

  788. them to

  789. grasp.

  790. They

  791. falsely

  792. accused

  793. Jesus

  794. of

  795. blasphemy

  796. and

  797. treason.

  798. Jesus

  799. just

  800. kept

  801. quiet.

  802. When a

  803. wise

  804. person

  805. is

  806. being

  807. judged

  808. by

  809. fools,

  810. he

  811. keeps

  812. quiet.

  813. Proverbs

  814. 24,

  815. 7.

  816. Now,

  817. in Proverbs

  818. 24,

  819. 7,

  820. when it

  821. says

  822. that

  823. wisdom

  824. is too

  825. high for

  826. a fool,

  827. in the

  828. gate,

  829. he

  830. does

  831. not

  832. open

  833. his

  834. mouth.

  835. We

  836. can

  837. read,

  838. he

  839. does

  840. not

  841. open

  842. his

  843. mouth,

  844. the

  845. he

  846. as

  847. the

  848. fool,

  849. or

  850. it

  851. can

  852. be

  853. the

  854. wise.

  855. I

  856. suppose

  857. can

  858. be

  859. read

  860. in

  861. either

  862. way,

  863. but

  864. in

  865. applying

  866. to

  867. Jesus

  868. Christ,

  869. he

  870. will

  871. be

  872. the

  873. wisdom

  874. that

  875. will

  876. not

  877. open

  878. his

  879. mouth

  880. while

  881. judged

  882. by

  883. the

  884. fools.

  885. In

  886. general,

  887. when we

  888. are foolish,

  889. we will

  890. talk a

  891. lot.

  892. The

  893. wise

  894. person

  895. knows

  896. when to

  897. talk

  898. and

  899. when

  900. not

  901. to

  902. talk.

  903. that's

  904. why I

  905. would

  906. apply

  907. the

  908. he

  909. as

  910. the

  911. wisdom

  912. who

  913. will

  914. keep

  915. quiet

  916. in

  917. the

  918. midst

  919. of

  920. foolishness.

  921. The

  922. religious

  923. leaders

  924. scheme

  925. to have

  926. Jesus

  927. crucified

  928. by the

  929. Romans.

  930. People

  931. scoffed

  932. at him

  933. when they

  934. saw him

  935. hanging

  936. on the

  937. cross.

  938. They

  939. teased

  940. Jesus,

  941. if you

  942. are here

  943. to save

  944. others,

  945. why don't

  946. you

  947. save

  948. yourself

  949. now?

  950. Proverbs

  951. 24,

  952. 8-9

  953. Jesus

  954. did not

  955. faint

  956. on the

  957. cross.

  958. He

  959. was in

  960. control

  961. of his

  962. emotions

  963. and

  964. thoughts.

  965. He

  966. prayed

  967. for

  968. those

  969. who

  970. killed

  971. him.

  972. And

  973. he

  974. committed

  975. his

  976. soul

  977. to

  978. God

  979. as

  980. he

  981. died.

  982. Proverbs

  983. 24,

  984. 10

  985. Why did

  986. Jesus

  987. not

  988. save

  989. himself

  990. on

  991. the

  992. cross?

  993. Because

  994. he

  995. came

  996. to

  997. die

  998. to

  999. take

  1000. away

  1001. the

  1002. curse

  1003. of

  1004. God.

  1005. No

  1006. one

  1007. stood

  1008. up

  1009. for

  1010. Jesus

  1011. when

  1012. he

  1013. was

  1014. innocent.

  1015. But

  1016. Jesus

  1017. was

  1018. dying

  1019. for

  1020. those

  1021. who

  1022. were

  1023. guilty,

  1024. those

  1025. who

  1026. were

  1027. stumbling

  1028. to

  1029. the

  1030. judgment

  1031. of

  1032. God.

  1033. Proverbs

  1034. 24,

  1035. 11

  1036. Jesus

  1037. knew

  1038. that

  1039. day

  1040. of

  1041. adversity

  1042. will

  1043. come

  1044. for

  1045. each

  1046. of

  1047. us.

  1048. He

  1049. knew

  1050. that

  1051. the

  1052. God

  1053. who

  1054. keeps

  1055. watch

  1056. over

  1057. our

  1058. souls

  1059. knows

  1060. what

  1061. we

  1062. have

  1063. done

  1064. and

  1065. that

  1066. he

  1067. will

  1068. repay

  1069. us

  1070. according

  1071. to

  1072. our

  1073. work.

  1074. Proverbs

  1075. 24,

  1076. 12

  1077. When

  1078. God

  1079. repays

  1080. us

  1081. according

  1082. to

  1083. our

  1084. own

  1085. works,

  1086. we

  1087. will

  1088. all

  1089. be

  1090. condemned.

  1091. However,

  1092. in

  1093. Christ,

  1094. God

  1095. can

  1096. now

  1097. repay

  1098. us

  1099. according

  1100. to

  1101. the

  1102. works

  1103. of

  1104. Jesus

  1105. and

  1106. therefore

  1107. we

  1108. can

  1109. stand

  1110. in

  1111. the

  1112. day

  1113. of

  1114. adversity.

  1115. What

  1116. effect

  1117. did

  1118. adversity

  1119. have

  1120. on

  1121. Jesus?

  1122. John

  1123. 1

  1124. 14

  1125. says,

  1126. And the

  1127. word

  1128. became

  1129. fresh,

  1130. flesh,

  1131. and

  1132. dwell

  1133. among

  1134. us,

  1135. and we

  1136. have

  1137. seen

  1138. his

  1139. glory,

  1140. glory

  1141. as

  1142. of

  1143. the

  1144. only

  1145. son

  1146. from

  1147. the

  1148. father,

  1149. full

  1150. of

  1151. grace

  1152. and

  1153. truth.

  1154. All

  1155. the

  1156. adversities

  1157. the world

  1158. throw at

  1159. Jesus

  1160. only

  1161. help

  1162. to

  1163. bring

  1164. out

  1165. his

  1166. grace

  1167. and

  1168. truth.

  1169. We

  1170. see

  1171. his

  1172. beauty

  1173. in

  1174. the

  1175. midst

  1176. of

  1177. adversity,

  1178. we

  1179. see

  1180. his

  1181. kindness

  1182. in

  1183. the

  1184. midst

  1185. of

  1186. hatred.

  1187. In

  1188. going

  1189. through

  1190. the

  1191. ultimate

  1192. adversity

  1193. of

  1194. being

  1195. crucified,

  1196. Jesus

  1197. became

  1198. the

  1199. perfect

  1200. sacrifice

  1201. or

  1202. redeem

  1203. us

  1204. from

  1205. the

  1206. wrath

  1207. of

  1208. God.

  1209. In

  1210. Jesus

  1211. Christ,

  1212. we

  1213. no

  1214. longer

  1215. need

  1216. to

  1217. worry

  1218. about

  1219. the

  1220. day

  1221. of

  1222. adversity.

  1223. In

  1224. Jesus,

  1225. we

  1226. are

  1227. also

  1228. given

  1229. the

  1230. wisdom

  1231. to

  1232. live

  1233. in

  1234. this

  1235. world

  1236. of

  1237. adversity.

  1238. Why

  1239. could

  1240. Jesus

  1241. become

  1242. more

  1243. glorious

  1244. in

  1245. the

  1246. midst

  1247. of

  1248. adversity?

  1249. Because

  1250. Jesus

  1251. did

  1252. not

  1253. live

  1254. for

  1255. himself,

  1256. he

  1257. lived

  1258. for

  1259. God

  1260. and

  1261. God's

  1262. people.

  1263. When

  1264. we

  1265. do

  1266. not

  1267. see

  1268. the

  1269. bigger

  1270. picture

  1271. but

  1272. only

  1273. focus

  1274. on

  1275. our

  1276. own

  1277. small

  1278. pictures,

  1279. we

  1280. cannot

  1281. cope

  1282. with

  1283. any

  1284. adversity

  1285. that

  1286. interferes

  1287. with

  1288. our

  1289. plans

  1290. and

  1291. hopes.

  1292. When

  1293. we

  1294. can

  1295. see

  1296. the

  1297. bigger

  1298. picture

  1299. and

  1300. learn

  1301. to

  1302. live

  1303. for

  1304. God

  1305. and

  1306. his

  1307. kingdom,

  1308. we

  1309. can

  1310. serve

  1311. on

  1312. the

  1313. way

  1314. for

  1315. adversity

  1316. for

  1317. God's

  1318. glory.

  1319. I

  1320. will

  1321. give

  1322. you

  1323. another

  1324. example.

  1325. Ernest

  1326. Gordon

  1327. was a

  1328. soldier

  1329. in

  1330. World

  1331. War

  1332. II.

  1333. He

  1334. fought

  1335. in

  1336. Malaya

  1337. and

  1338. was

  1339. captured

  1340. by the

  1341. Japanese

  1342. and

  1343. sent

  1344. to

  1345. the

  1346. prison

  1347. camp

  1348. in

  1349. Thailand

  1350. during

  1351. World

  1352. War

  1353. II.

  1354. I

  1355. think

  1356. some

  1357. of

  1358. us

  1359. when

  1360. I

  1361. watched

  1362. a

  1363. movie

  1364. about

  1365. the

  1366. river

  1367. Kai

  1368. KWI.

  1369. So

  1370. that

  1371. is

  1372. a

  1373. story

  1374. that

  1375. he

  1376. recounted.

  1377. When

  1378. he

  1379. went

  1380. into

  1381. the

  1382. camp

  1383. he

  1384. was

  1385. an

  1386. atheist

  1387. and

  1388. he

  1389. described

  1390. how

  1391. hopeless

  1392. and

  1393. despair

  1394. prisoners

  1395. were

  1396. under

  1397. the

  1398. cruelty

  1399. of

  1400. Japanese

  1401. soldiers.

  1402. They

  1403. were

  1404. just

  1405. waiting

  1406. to

  1407. die.

  1408. They

  1409. were

  1410. just

  1411. waiting

  1412. passively.

  1413. They

  1414. were

  1415. just

  1416. doing

  1417. what

  1418. they

  1419. were

  1420. told

  1421. to

  1422. do.

  1423. And

  1424. each

  1425. just

  1426. care

  1427. for

  1428. themselves.

  1429. Ernest

  1430. became

  1431. very

  1432. sick.

  1433. I

  1434. suppose

  1435. he

  1436. was

  1437. injured

  1438. as

  1439. well,

  1440. beaten

  1441. up,

  1442. starved,

  1443. and he

  1444. was very

  1445. close to

  1446. death.

  1447. A

  1448. Christian

  1449. prisoner

  1450. cared

  1451. for him

  1452. and gave

  1453. him his

  1454. own portion

  1455. of food

  1456. and

  1457. led him

  1458. to

  1459. recovery.

  1460. Ernest

  1461. came

  1462. to

  1463. know

  1464. the

  1465. Lord

  1466. Jesus

  1467. in

  1468. the

  1469. camp

  1470. and

  1471. began

  1472. to

  1473. care

  1474. for

  1475. others.

  1476. Soon

  1477. there

  1478. was

  1479. a

  1480. transformation

  1481. in

  1482. the

  1483. camp.

  1484. People

  1485. started

  1486. to

  1487. put

  1488. other

  1489. people

  1490. first.

  1491. They

  1492. rose

  1493. above

  1494. their

  1495. own

  1496. self-pity

  1497. and

  1498. started

  1499. to

  1500. care

  1501. for

  1502. one

  1503. another.

  1504. Instead

  1505. of

  1506. cursing

  1507. their

  1508. enemies

  1509. at

  1510. God,

  1511. the

  1512. prisoners

  1513. started

  1514. to

  1515. pray

  1516. to

  1517. God

  1518. and

  1519. for

  1520. their

  1521. enemies.

  1522. The

  1523. adversity

  1524. under

  1525. the

  1526. cruelty

  1527. of

  1528. Japanese

  1529. captors

  1530. change,

  1531. but

  1532. the

  1533. prisoners

  1534. were

  1535. changed.

  1536. They

  1537. were

  1538. still

  1539. enslaved

  1540. in

  1541. the

  1542. camp,

  1543. but

  1544. they

  1545. were

  1546. no

  1547. longer

  1548. enslaved

  1549. by

  1550. suffering

  1551. and

  1552. death.

  1553. They

  1554. had

  1555. someone

  1556. and

  1557. something

  1558. bigger

  1559. than

  1560. themselves

  1561. to

  1562. live

  1563. for.

  1564. What

  1565. is a

  1566. wise

  1567. thing

  1568. to

  1569. do

  1570. in

  1571. adversity?

  1572. We

  1573. know

  1574. that

  1575. we

  1576. cannot

  1577. avoid

  1578. adversity

  1579. in

  1580. this

  1581. life.

  1582. The

  1583. stoics

  1584. advise us

  1585. to

  1586. face

  1587. adversity

  1588. like

  1589. a

  1590. man

  1591. just

  1592. suffer

  1593. it

  1594. quietly.

  1595. The

  1596. Ippicurium

  1597. advised us

  1598. to enjoy

  1599. ourselves

  1600. as much

  1601. as possible

  1602. to

  1603. lessen

  1604. the

  1605. effect

  1606. of

  1607. adversity.

  1608. What

  1609. did

  1610. Jesus

  1611. do

  1612. with

  1613. adversity?

  1614. Jesus,

  1615. for the

  1616. joy that

  1617. was set

  1618. before

  1619. him,

  1620. enjoyed

  1621. the

  1622. cross

  1623. despising

  1624. shame

  1625. and is

  1626. now

  1627. seated

  1628. at the

  1629. right

  1630. hand

  1631. of the

  1632. throne

  1633. of

  1634. God.

  1635. Jesus

  1636. had a

  1637. far

  1638. bigger

  1639. picture

  1640. in

  1641. mind.

  1642. He

  1643. served

  1644. on the

  1645. wave

  1646. of

  1647. adversity

  1648. to

  1649. display

  1650. God's

  1651. glory.

  1652. Proverbs

  1653. 24

  1654. 11

  1655. said,

  1656. Rescue

  1657. those

  1658. who

  1659. are

  1660. being

  1661. taken

  1662. away

  1663. to

  1664. death.

  1665. Hold

  1666. back

  1667. those

  1668. who

  1669. are

  1670. stumbling

  1671. to

  1672. the

  1673. slaughter.

  1674. This

  1675. is not

  1676. just

  1677. another

  1678. task

  1679. for

  1680. us

  1681. to

  1682. do.

  1683. This

  1684. is

  1685. life.

  1686. When

  1687. we can

  1688. see the

  1689. bigger

  1690. picture,

  1691. when

  1692. we can

  1693. see the

  1694. kingdom

  1695. of

  1696. God

  1697. coming,

  1698. our

  1699. own

  1700. comfort

  1701. and

  1702. safety

  1703. will

  1704. become

  1705. trivial.

  1706. Adversity

  1707. can no

  1708. longer

  1709. enslave

  1710. us.

  1711. In

  1712. Christ,

  1713. we

  1714. are not

  1715. only free

  1716. from

  1717. facing

  1718. the

  1719. day

  1720. of

  1721. adversity

  1722. when

  1723. God

  1724. will

  1725. judge

  1726. the

  1727. living

  1728. and

  1729. the

  1730. dead.

  1731. We

  1732. are

  1733. also

  1734. free

  1735. to

  1736. be

  1737. like

  1738. him,

  1739. rescuing

  1740. those

  1741. who

  1742. are

  1743. stumbling

  1744. to

  1745. the

  1746. slaughter.

  1747. Maybe

  1748. display

  1749. the

  1750. mind

  1751. of

  1752. Christ

  1753. in

  1754. the

  1755. midst

  1756. of

  1757. adversity.

  1758. Maybe

  1759. be

  1760. willing

  1761. to

  1762. suffer

  1763. loss

  1764. because

  1765. we

  1766. have

  1767. something

  1768. greater

  1769. and

  1770. we

  1771. have

  1772. everything

  1773. in

  1774. Jesus

  1775. Christ.

  1776. Let

  1777. us

  1778. pray.

  1779. Father,

  1780. we

  1781. know that

  1782. so often

  1783. when we

  1784. meet with

  1785. adversity,

  1786. we will

  1787. tend to

  1788. think about

  1789. ourselves,

  1790. poor me,

  1791. why me?

  1792. Father,

  1793. we

  1794. thank you

  1795. for

  1796. changing

  1797. us,

  1798. that we

  1799. can

  1800. think

  1801. about

  1802. the

  1803. Lord

  1804. Jesus

  1805. Christ

  1806. and

  1807. think

  1808. about

  1809. others

  1810. in

  1811. the

  1812. midst

  1813. of

  1814. adversity.

  1815. Father,

  1816. may

  1817. you

  1818. help us

  1819. to rise

  1820. above

  1821. ourselves

  1822. and

  1823. to

  1824. enjoy

  1825. your

  1826. presence

  1827. with us

  1828. as we

  1829. live our

  1830. life.

  1831. and do

  1832. something

  1833. that

  1834. has

  1835. eternal

  1836. value

  1837. and

  1838. that

  1839. will

  1840. show

  1841. your

  1842. glory.

  1843. Thank you,

  1844. Lord.

  1845. In Jesus' name

  1846. we pray.

  1847. Amen.
