  1. We're going to have the Bible reading now, so please open your Bibles.

  2. Matthew chapter 5, verses 1 to 10.

    Matthew 5:1–10

  3. Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.

  4. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

  5. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  6. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

  7. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

  8. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

  9. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

  10. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

  11. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

  12. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  13. Well, yeah, today we return to the life of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew.

  14. And we're going through chapters 5 to 7 and into 8, and it's commonly known, Sermon on the Mount.

  15. You might know it well.

  16. And as Simon said, I'm kicking off this series, but there's a bunch of guys,

  17. so Matt, Sam, Simon and Wilker, who's going to be taking one of these sermons and helping us go through it.

  18. I reckon the Sermon on the Mount used to be quite well known in society.

  19. If you said the Sermon on the Mount, most people down the street would know what you're talking about.

  20. I'm not so sure that the current generation that that's true.

  21. But it's still got the most quoted verse in the Bible in it from unbelievers and believers alike.

  22. Any guesses at what that is?

  23. Judge not, yeah.

  24. Chapter 7, verse 1.

  25. Do not judge, or you too will be judged.

  26. We might think it's John 3, 16, but it's do not judge.

  27. As if somehow Jesus is saying, yeah, be tolerant.

  28. Even though a few verses later he's saying, my words will determine,

  29. how you respond to them will determine your eternal destiny.

  30. That's not very tolerant.

  31. So it's still very misunderstood, even though it's got the most quoted verse in it.

  32. But what about in the church?

  33. You might be familiar with the Sermon on the Mount.

  34. I wonder if there's something even more dangerous than ignorance.

  35. What if we're coming today and we think we already understand it?

  36. Maybe this term we need to actually unlearn some things.

  37. So before we get into this series, I want to just ask a few questions about

  38. how are you coming to the Sermon on the Mount?

  39. So the first thing I want to ask is, are you treating the Sermon on the Mount as a unified sermon?

  40. So you're hoping today to hear a unified talk from me.

  41. You can be the judge of whether I succeed at that or not.

  42. With an introduction and body and conclusion that all ties together.

  43. Are we expecting that when we come to the Sermon on the Mount?

  44. I think in the past I've treated it like this encyclopedia of topics on how to be a good Christian.

  45. So it's got stuff about lust and anger and divorce and not retaliating, not judging, loving your enemies,

  46. praying, giving to the needy, not worrying about your material needs.

  47. Are we treating it like are we dissecting it and just focus in on a little part?

  48. I think the danger in doing that is it lends itself to becoming moralism,

  49. where we just need to try better to be good Christians.

  50. So in this term, we're not going to focus in on those subtopics.

  51. We're going to do larger chunks of the Sermon on the Mount.

  52. Hopefully that will help us see that this is a unified sermon.

  53. Jesus has a unified message he wants us to hear.

  54. In the sermon, we've got an introduction which we're going to look at today

  55. and then Matt Hand is going to take us through the next bit.

  56. So we've got the character of being in the kingdom

  57. and then Matt Hand will show us how that will make us salt and light in the world.

  58. So that's the introduction to his sermon.

  59. Have a look at chapter 5 verse 17.

  60. Here's the start of the body of the sermon.

  61. Do not think that I've come to abolish the law or the prophets.

  62. I've not come to abolish them but to fulfil them.

  63. So there's the theme of this sermon.

  64. And then you can see that he finishes the body.

  65. If you flip over to chapter 7 verse 12.

  66. Where are we?

  67. Verse 12.

  68. Chapter 7 verse 12.

  69. So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you

  70. for this sums up the law and the prophets.

  71. Somehow Jesus is going to fulfil the law to bring in the kingdom of God.

  72. And then you'll see after that, you've got the subheadings there,

  73. the narrow and wide gates.

  74. Suddenly we've got two choices.

  75. You can go down a narrow path or a wide path,

  76. a narrow gate or a wide gate.

  77. One leads to life or death.

  78. There's true and false teachers.

  79. There's true and false disciples.

  80. There's the wise and the foolish builders who build their house.

  81. One house stands, the other falls.

  82. It's that conclusion.

  83. We need to respond.

  84. There's two ways to live.

  85. So are you coming ready to hear a unified sermon?

  86. The second thing.

  87. Are you coming to the sermon with the rest of the gospel in mind?

  88. Matthew's placed this at the beginning of Jesus' life.

  89. Now maybe the sermon was the very first thing,

  90. one of the very first things Jesus did.

  91. Maybe it was later on.

  92. I'm not really sure.

  93. But Matthew places it at the beginning.

  94. I think that tells us we need to understand the life of Jesus.

  95. First we need to understand this sermon.

  96. We need to listen to this sermon.

  97. And then we can see Jesus' life more clearly.

  98. I think the sermon actually wants us to become poor in spirit,

  99. so that then when we look to Jesus' life,

  100. we can then see what it looks like to be full.

  101. Or do we remember what the summary of Jesus' ministry is about?

  102. Chapter 4, verse 17.

  103. So chapter 4, verse 17.

  104. From that time on, Jesus began to preach.

  105. Here's his first words.

  106. Here's a summary of his entire ministry.

  107. Repent.

  108. Repent.

  109. Turn around.

  110. Change your life completely.

  111. Repent.

  112. For the kingdom of heaven has come near.

  113. The kingdom of heaven has arrived.

  114. It is here.

  115. And so we need to repent.

  116. That should make us ask, why do we need to change?

  117. Entrance into the kingdom is not automatic.

  118. What is it about this kingdom that our normal way of life means we're not in it?

  119. Our normal way of life from birth, we are not in the kingdom.

  120. We need to repent.

  121. Are we coming to the sermon ready to learn that?

  122. Why do we need to repent?

  123. What is this kingdom?

  124. A total change has to occur.

  125. And why should we listen to Jesus?

  126. That's a big call that you need to repent.

  127. You need to change and listen to me.

  128. Why listen to this guy?

  129. Why?

  130. Well, we've seen, last time we went through Matthew, we've seen his birth narratives, as Simon introduced today.

  131. It was very strange stuff.

  132. But it all pointed to the fact that this is God's promised king.

  133. He's arrived.

  134. The king has arrived.

  135. And then what have we seen so far?

  136. He was baptised.

  137. We can listen to Jesus because the very first act we see him do, I like how Sinclair Ferguson describes this.

  138. You've got all these people coming to John in the Jordan, having their sins forgiven.

  139. It's like their sins are washed off into the water of the Jordan River.

  140. And it's just this murky mess of sin in that river now.

  141. And what does Jesus do?

  142. Even though spotless, he wades into it.

  143. He's picturally taking it upon himself.

  144. There's a very good reason to listen to this man.

  145. That's the character of this man, this king.

  146. And then we see him, he confronts Satan.

  147. He confronts the enemy that all of us believe his lies and he doesn't.

  148. He stands firm where the rest of humanity fall.

  149. This guy can win.

  150. He's got the power.

  151. He's got the power to undo Satan's work.

  152. And he's got the power to call.

  153. We see the first disciples.

  154. He's just, Andrew, follow me.

  155. Simon, follow me.

  156. And they drop their entire life and follow him.

  157. This king has the power to summon.

  158. And then he's got the power to restore.

  159. All the sickness that comes to him, he heals.

  160. There's some very good reasons to listen to this man.

  161. He can defeat the enemy.

  162. He identifies with our sin.

  163. He can change our lives.

  164. He can restore us.

  165. So are we ready to listen to hear why we need to repent?

  166. In verses 1 and 2, he goes up onto a mountain.

  167. I think the fact that he goes up onto a mountain should make us think of Moses.

  168. Moses.

  169. Yeah, Moses.

  170. That's right.

  171. Moses on Mount Sinai.

  172. Where all Israel are gathered to Moses to receive the law on what it means to belong in this kingdom.

  173. Jesus is about to describe what it means to belong in this kingdom.

  174. He's this new Moses.

  175. This new connection between heaven and earth.

  176. Now in these verses, I was sorely tempted to skip over the detail.

  177. He opened his mouth and he began to teach them, saying,

  178. like, why tell us that he opened his mouth?

  179. That's a strange detail, isn't it?

  180. Is it so that we don't think he was a ventriloquist?

  181. I don't think so.

  182. I doubt it.

  183. Maybe it's saying he's not going to quote other rabbis.

  184. The source of his authority is himself.

  185. Maybe that's why.

  186. I wonder if it's something else.

  187. I wonder if there's an even deeper reason that Matthew wants us to focus on his mouth.

  188. This is the first time public came to him, that we're told in Matthew anyway.

  189. What does he do?

  190. The first public rally.

  191. This is a significant moment.

  192. How's he going to kick off his ministry?

  193. What's he going to do?

  194. He could have drawn a sword.

  195. Let's go.

  196. The kingdom is here.

  197. He could have made denarii, coins, fall from heaven and filled up everyone's pockets.

  198. He could have kept healing all the sickness, but he doesn't.

  199. He opens his mouth.

  200. I just wonder if we're meant to think, is the words of Jesus the source of blessing?

  201. Do we see his mouth as the source of eternal life?

  202. I keep falling back into the same kind of thinking.

  203. That if only I add more of God into my life, if I have a closer walk with him, then my mental state will be in a better condition.

  204. My relationships will be better, more harmonious, and my impact on the world will be more successful.

  205. I think if we come to Jesus' words here, wanting to add more God into our life, we're going to miss the point.

  206. If we come to this wanting to add more God into our life, we will miss the point.

  207. The problem isn't that we're coming to Jesus empty in order to be filled.

  208. Our problem is we're already half filled on the things of this world.

  209. We want Jesus to just top us up, please.

  210. Does that describe you?

  211. That describes me.

  212. I'm pretty happy with the things of this earth.

  213. I just want Jesus to top me up, make me full.

  214. Our problem isn't that we're empty.

  215. Our problem is we're half full.

  216. If we listen to the words that come out of Jesus' mouth, he's going to make us empty.

  217. The sermon contains some devastating words.

  218. Blessed are the persecuted.

  219. Does that jar in your mind?

  220. It jars in my mind.

  221. How can that be?

  222. Or he says at the end of chapter 5,

  223. if you want to be in the kingdom, you therefore must be perfect,

  224. as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  225. That's devastating news.

  226. Who can do that?

  227. Don't come expecting to add more God to your life.

  228. Get ready to be emptied, made poor.

  229. But don't fear that.

  230. Because his very first words, as Jen has already helped us understand with the kids' talk,

  231. he's given us a great promise.

  232. Bless are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  233. So let's not fear that.

  234. But let's come ready to be made poor,

  235. because then the kingdom of heaven is ours.

  236. So what do you think will make your life blessed?

  237. A blessed condition.

  238. At home we've got this magazine called Wellbeing.

  239. And the front cover, I'm just intrigued by it,

  240. the front cover has this lady all rugged up with her PJs and a blanket over her,

  241. with a warm drink in her hands,

  242. and she's staring off with her eyes closed,

  243. with a serene look on her face.

  244. That's well-being.

  245. Now I like a cup of tea all rugged up as much as the next person.

  246. I'm not having a go at that.

  247. But what about those times in life,

  248. metaphorically speaking, when we are bruised and hurting?

  249. What about the times when we just feel naked and cold and alone

  250. and surrounded by so many things that just stress us out?

  251. Or at the end of life,

  252. when we know we're not going to leave that hospital bed,

  253. can we be blessed then?

  254. Can I look at my life and go,

  255. I am blessed?

  256. I think we all fall into the trap again and again,

  257. believing that if only my external circumstances change,

  258. then I will be blessed.

  259. Only then I will be blessed.

  260. For me at the moment,

  261. I reckon I'll be blessed if Samuel just slept through the night.

  262. Come on.

  263. And then my friends with the newborn saying,

  264. oh yeah,

  265. my daughter sleeps through the night.

  266. It's a cinch.

  267. It's like,

  268. yeah,

  269. thank you for telling me that.

  270. That really helps me.

  271. If only I would get sleep,

  272. I would be a better person to Emma.

  273. My character would be better.

  274. I would have more productivity.

  275. My mental state of mind,

  276. oh,

  277. it would be so much better.

  278. If only I had this.

  279. Change my circumstances,

  280. God,

  281. and then I'll be blessed.

  282. Now you might be sitting there thinking,

  283. I envy you,

  284. David,

  285. that you have a sleepless night with a child.

  286. You might be envying me.

  287. What is it for you?

  288. What do you think?

  289. If only you had this,

  290. I'd be blessed.

  291. I'd be in a blessed condition.

  292. I like R.T. France's definition of the blessed person.

  293. It's someone whose place in life is an enviable one.

  294. The blessed state Jesus is about to describe

  295. transcends our circumstances.

  296. We can be blessed no matter what.

  297. Whether good or ill,

  298. success or failure,

  299. acceptance or rejection,

  300. health or illness,

  301. stress or at leisure,

  302. we can be blessed.

  303. It's the enviable life.

  304. Are you ready to hear it?

  305. Do you want it?

  306. I want it.

  307. I believe I have it,

  308. but let's see what it is.

  309. Here's the description of the people who are blessed.

  310. Poor in spirit,

  311. mourn,

  312. meek,

  313. humble,

  314. hunger and thirst,

  315. merciful,

  316. pure in heart,

  317. peacemakers

  318. and persecuted.

  319. Does it sound very good?

  320. Is that really the enviable life?

  321. Now,

  322. I'm stopping at verse 10 there.

  323. You might wonder,

  324. why haven't we gone to verse 11?

  325. You got blessed again.

  326. If you notice there that

  327. verse 3 and verse 10,

  328. you've got the same promise at the end.

  329. For theirs is the kingdom of heaven,

  330. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  331. This whole group,

  332. 3 to 10,

  333. is describing

  334. the state of the person

  335. who's in the kingdom of heaven.

  336. We can't pick and choose these

  337. and go,

  338. I'm a peacemaker,

  339. but I'm not meek.

  340. I need to work on that.

  341. This is one group,

  342. characteristic of the group.

  343. In verse 11,

  344. the pronoun changes

  345. from they,

  346. describing this group,

  347. to you.

  348. Bless you

  349. when people insult you.

  350. It starts talking

  351. direct to the disciples.

  352. So,

  353. 3 to 10,

  354. this is what it means

  355. to belong to the kingdom.

  356. This is the enviable life.

  357. Let's quickly go through these.

  358. Just make sure we understand them

  359. before we can decide

  360. how to respond to them.

  361. So,

  362. verse 3,

  363. poor in spirit.

  364. Have you ever experienced

  365. those times in life

  366. where you just come

  367. to the end of yourself?

  368. You just,

  369. you don't have the resources

  370. to get through.

  371. you just got nothing

  372. in the tank.

  373. You've got absolutely nothing.

  374. You come to the end

  375. of yourself,

  376. all you have to look to

  377. is that God does something,

  378. that God helps you.

  379. Have you ever been to that place

  380. and yet felt full?

  381. To have peace,

  382. even though you're afraid

  383. and sad?

  384. I think those times

  385. are rarer

  386. than I want them to be

  387. but there is a real joy there

  388. when we come to the end

  389. of ourselves

  390. and we just,

  391. we just look to God.

  392. We have to trust him.

  393. That's all we've got.

  394. I think that's what it means

  395. to be poor in spirit.

  396. And it's in spirit,

  397. it's not materially.

  398. This is an internal

  399. attitude

  400. that these characteristics

  401. are describing.

  402. It's a spiritual reality,

  403. internal kingdom.

  404. It's to have an attitude

  405. of self-emptiness

  406. before God,

  407. only relying

  408. on his goodness.

  409. Now I don't think

  410. life has to go badly

  411. to be poor in spirit.

  412. I think we can be

  413. empty of ourselves

  414. relying on God

  415. all the time.

  416. But,

  417. in God's goodness,

  418. sometimes

  419. he breaks us down

  420. so that we actually

  421. get to that point.

  422. He strips us back

  423. so that we can actually

  424. be in this blessed state.

  425. So,

  426. poor in spirit.

  427. And then we've got

  428. verse 4,

  429. mourn.

  430. What the Christian

  431. mourns over,

  432. I think,

  433. is kept undefined here

  434. because sin

  435. has infiltrated

  436. everything.

  437. If we mourn sin

  438. in myself

  439. and sin

  440. in others

  441. and sin

  442. in this world

  443. and sin

  444. in the church

  445. and we just

  446. feel the destruction

  447. of sin,

  448. why wouldn't

  449. we mourn?

  450. There's so much

  451. to mourn over.

  452. And then it's

  453. the meek

  454. and humble.

  455. So,

  456. meek is not

  457. a false humility

  458. that still

  459. keeps the attention

  460. on yourself

  461. and you're still

  462. self-absorbed.

  463. But meekness

  464. is a true humility

  465. before God.

  466. It's a stance

  467. before God.

  468. And

  469. being in that state,

  470. you are therefore

  471. gentle.

  472. Even when you're

  473. attacked by others,

  474. because of your

  475. stance before God,

  476. you're even gentle.

  477. Because the person

  478. who is brought

  479. to the end

  480. of themselves,

  481. relying on God,

  482. mourning for sin,

  483. they're just

  484. totally dependent

  485. on him.

  486. They don't have

  487. to fret.

  488. They don't have

  489. to control

  490. circumstances.

  491. They just,

  492. they can be meek

  493. and gentle.

  494. And then we've got

  495. hunger and thirst

  496. for righteousness.

  497. Being freed

  498. from being obsessed

  499. with ourselves,

  500. now looking to God,

  501. our desires change.

  502. We've got a taste

  503. of what God is like

  504. and we want more

  505. of it.

  506. We want to be

  507. like him.

  508. But the more

  509. we get to know God,

  510. the more we realise

  511. how much we're not

  512. like God,

  513. and so we hunger

  514. and thirst.

  515. As a deer pants

  516. for water,

  517. so my soul

  518. longs for you.

  519. The Christian

  520. is not finally

  521. satisfied,

  522. ultimately anyway,

  523. until we have God

  524. and are like him.

  525. And then merciful,

  526. having received

  527. such mercy

  528. from God,

  529. how could we not

  530. just love mercy

  531. and want to give

  532. mercy to others,

  533. want others to have

  534. the mercy of God

  535. as well.

  536. And then pure in heart.

  537. Pure in heart,

  538. we might think

  539. it's about being

  540. sexually pure

  541. or morally pure,

  542. but it's much

  543. broader than that.

  544. Pure in heart

  545. is having a single

  546. devotion for God,

  547. loving the Lord

  548. our God

  549. with all our heart,

  550. soul,

  551. mind and strength.

  552. And obviously

  553. that will show

  554. itself morally,

  555. but it's having

  556. that single

  557. devotion,

  558. a pure heart.

  559. And then peacemakers,

  560. rejoicing in the

  561. Father,

  562. not giving up on us,

  563. but even sending

  564. his Son to give us

  565. peace.

  566. We want others

  567. to have that same

  568. peace.

  569. Not just keeping

  570. the peace,

  571. but trying to make

  572. peace.

  573. And therefore,

  574. verse 10,

  575. persecuted.

  576. Because these values

  577. are so foreign

  578. to this world,

  579. this kind of person

  580. is not welcome.

  581. Is this the normal

  582. way of thinking

  583. that you've come

  584. across in others?

  585. Or in yourself?

  586. Let's make it personal.

  587. Does it come natural

  588. to you,

  589. these kind of

  590. attributes?

  591. It doesn't come

  592. naturally for me.

  593. I come from

  594. this world.

  595. I still live

  596. in this world.

  597. Consider what

  598. this world

  599. might think

  600. of Jesus'

  601. teaching.

  602. Poor in spirit.

  603. If anything,

  604. this sounds

  605. psychologically

  606. dangerous

  607. to believe this.

  608. You need

  609. positive thinking.

  610. Don't think

  611. you're poor

  612. in spirit.

  613. Think positively,

  614. and then you'll

  615. be blessed.

  616. You need

  617. self-esteem.

  618. You need

  619. self-actualization,

  620. where you need

  621. your physical

  622. and emotional

  623. and safety,

  624. all those needs

  625. met,

  626. and then you can

  627. reach your full

  628. potential.

  629. Only then.

  630. This is dangerous

  631. teaching,

  632. Jesus.

  633. Poor in spirit.

  634. What about

  635. the rest?

  636. Mourning.

  637. That's the

  638. opposite of

  639. blessedness.

  640. What's going

  641. on?

  642. Pain is bad.

  643. Sadness is

  644. bad.

  645. Avoid them

  646. at all costs.

  647. People might

  648. say that

  649. humility is a

  650. virtue,

  651. but then

  652. live all of

  653. life believing

  654. I need to

  655. assert myself

  656. if I'm going

  657. to survive in

  658. this world.

  659. I need to

  660. insist on my

  661. rights.

  662. They say

  663. humility is a

  664. virtue,

  665. but do

  666. people live

  667. it?

  668. The meek?

  669. Really?

  670. And hunger

  671. and thirst.

  672. Why hunger

  673. and thirst?

  674. You can be

  675. satisfied now.

  676. Don't wait.

  677. Be satisfied

  678. now.

  679. And mercy.

  680. Yeah,

  681. mercy is good

  682. as long as

  683. I'm on the

  684. receiving end,

  685. but if you

  686. wrong me,

  687. every fiver

  688. of my being

  689. wants retaliation,

  690. wants retribution.

  691. To show

  692. mercy would

  693. be an

  694. injustice.

  695. I love

  696. mercy when I

  697. get it,

  698. but does it

  699. go the other

  700. way?

  701. And

  702. peacemaking.

  703. People who

  704. keep the

  705. peace are

  706. rare.

  707. They're rare.

  708. People say

  709. comments all

  710. the time that

  711. just could

  712. destroy peace.

  713. But people

  714. who are actively

  715. trying to

  716. create peace,

  717. they're even

  718. rarer still.

  719. peace.

  720. When everyone

  721. is scrambling

  722. over the top

  723. of each other

  724. to get a

  725. slice of

  726. this earth,

  727. peace is

  728. only helpful

  729. if it serves

  730. my own

  731. agenda.

  732. These values,

  733. the world

  734. does not

  735. believe them.

  736. We don't

  737. naturally

  738. believe them.

  739. It's as if

  740. these are

  741. two completely

  742. different

  743. kingdoms.

  744. kingdoms,

  745. the kingdom

  746. of heaven

  747. and I'll

  748. call it

  749. the kingdom

  750. of earth.

  751. They're

  752. completely

  753. different

  754. kingdoms.

  755. Two ways

  756. of looking

  757. at reality,

  758. two value

  759. systems.

  760. And so

  761. anyone who

  762. embodies the

  763. kingdom of

  764. heaven is

  765. not welcome.

  766. You are

  767. alien and a

  768. foreigner in

  769. the kingdom

  770. of earth.

  771. You are not

  772. welcome.

  773. like a

  774. foreigner who

  775. might just,

  776. it might be a

  777. subtle thing

  778. where you just

  779. don't feel

  780. totally welcome

  781. in a new

  782. culture or it

  783. might be an

  784. overt thing

  785. like we're

  786. seeing at the

  787. moment where

  788. people were

  789. spitting.

  790. I had a

  791. friend from

  792. college who

  793. just down the

  794. street, she's

  795. from Hong Kong

  796. and someone just

  797. spat on her

  798. because of the

  799. COVID going on

  800. at the moment.

  801. Sometimes the

  802. persecution is

  803. just you don't

  804. belong, other

  805. times it's

  806. quite avert.

  807. Embodying

  808. this, don't

  809. expect to fit

  810. in in this

  811. world.

  812. And yet

  813. Jesus says

  814. this is the

  815. enviable life.

  816. How is that

  817. possible?

  818. How is this

  819. the enviable

  820. life?

  821. I don't think

  822. there's anything

  823. inherently good

  824. about hardship.

  825. I don't think

  826. Jesus is

  827. saying you

  828. must have

  829. hardship and

  830. then hardship

  831. itself is

  832. blessed.

  833. There's nothing

  834. inherently good

  835. about hardship.

  836. So why is this

  837. the blessed

  838. life?

  839. It's blessed

  840. because of the

  841. promises.

  842. The second

  843. half of each

  844. of these

  845. verses.

  846. You only

  847. believe that

  848. this is the

  849. enviable life

  850. if you believe

  851. these gracious

  852. promises.

  853. promises.

  854. Theirs is the

  855. kingdom of

  856. heaven.

  857. They will be

  858. comforted.

  859. They will

  860. inherit the

  861. earth.

  862. They will be

  863. filled.

  864. They will be

  865. shown mercy.

  866. They will see

  867. God.

  868. They will be

  869. called children

  870. of God.

  871. Theirs is the

  872. kingdom of

  873. heaven.

  874. God.

  875. It's the

  876. promises that

  877. make this the

  878. enviable life.

  879. When your

  880. confidence in

  881. yourself is

  882. stripped away

  883. forcing you to

  884. rely on God

  885. you can look at

  886. yourself and

  887. go my life

  888. belongs in the

  889. hands of a

  890. good king.

  891. I am in the

  892. kingdom of

  893. heaven.

  894. I'm blessed.

  895. As you

  896. mourn, as you

  897. bear the burden

  898. of living in a

  899. sin-filled world

  900. you can say I

  901. am blessed for I

  902. soon will be

  903. comforted.

  904. As you are

  905. wronged and you

  906. don't retaliate,

  907. you don't strive to

  908. be on top of this

  909. world and you

  910. seemingly miss out

  911. all because you

  912. want to wait for

  913. God to act.

  914. You can know

  915. this promise.

  916. I will inherit

  917. the earth.

  918. I don't need to

  919. have it now.

  920. I don't need to

  921. be on top.

  922. As you feel so

  923. discouraged by your

  924. own sin, getting

  925. the upper hand in

  926. your own life,

  927. you're just thirsting

  928. for righteousness,

  929. righteousness, you

  930. want righteousness

  931. to characterize the

  932. church and the

  933. world and you

  934. just, there's so

  935. much self-centeredness

  936. in me and others

  937. and I will be

  938. satisfied.

  939. The kingdom of

  940. righteousness is

  941. coming.

  942. I will be

  943. satisfied.

  944. As every fiber of

  945. your being wants to

  946. get justice when that

  947. Christian friend

  948. offends you, as I

  949. look forward to the

  950. day of judgment and

  951. I know I'm only going

  952. to receive mercy, I'm

  953. blessed.

  954. I'm blessed.

  955. As you wrestle with

  956. feeling double-minded,

  957. your heart desiring

  958. God but also desiring

  959. this world and this

  960. tension is just

  961. constant.

  962. I wish I was more

  963. pure in my devotion

  964. to God.

  965. He's the promise.

  966. I will see God and

  967. when I see him, I

  968. will be like him.

  969. I am blessed.

  970. That struggle means I

  971. will see God.

  972. I am blessed.

  973. As you feel despondent

  974. that there's so much

  975. peace breaking, even

  976. among Christians, you

  977. can still pursue it.

  978. don't give up on it

  979. because I'll be called

  980. a son of God.

  981. Look at the character

  982. of my father.

  983. Look at the lengths

  984. he went to to create

  985. peace.

  986. Peacemaking is worth

  987. it because I'm a

  988. child of God.

  989. I'm a son.

  990. I'm a daughter of

  991. God.

  992. And as you feel like

  993. you don't fit in with

  994. society, with your

  995. friends, with your

  996. colleagues, with

  997. family even, you can

  998. say, well, there's a

  999. reason for that because

  1000. I belong to the

  1001. kingdom of heaven.

  1002. I am blessed.

1003. I am loved by my

  1004. king.

  1005. I am blessed.

  1006. I don't think we

  1007. value these

  1008. characteristics naturally.

  1009. So how do these

  1010. promises become ours?

  1011. Because they don't

  1012. quite fit us.

  1013. Because we're so in

  1014. bondage to the

  1015. kingdom of earth

  1016. still.

  1017. There's two things

  1018. that need to happen.

  1019. I've already said the

  1020. first one.

1021. First one, we need to

  1022. be emptied.

1023. We need to let go of

  1024. the kingdom of earth.

1025. We need to let go of

  1026. believing that if only

  1027. our circumstances

  1028. change, then and only

1029. then can we be blessed.

1030. We need to come to the

  1031. end of ourselves.

1032. We need to be poor in

  1033. spirit, just only looking

  1034. to God.

  1035. God.

1036. As we come to the rest of

  1037. the sermon on the

  1038. mount this term, get

  1039. ready to be undone.

  1040. Get ready to be

  1041. flawed, emptied.

1042. Do not have confidence in

  1043. yourself but in God's

  1044. goodness.

  1045. But again, don't fear

  1046. that.

  1047. Don't resist that.

  1048. Because it's the empty

  1049. who have it all.

1050. It's the poor who are in

  1051. the kingdom of God.

1052. And once we are emptied,

1053. once we are poor in

  1054. spirit, then we're ready

  1055. to hear these promises.

1056. We will look outside of

  1057. ourselves to our king

  1058. who embodies these

  1059. characteristics perfectly.

1060. He is the blessed one.

1061. He is the one poor in

  1062. spirit.

  1063. He is meek.

1064. He is pure in heart.

  1065. He is merciful.

1066. He lives the blessed life

1067. that we have recorded in

1068. the rest of the gospel.

1069. He is the blessed one.

  1070. This describes our king.

1071. He came to fulfill the

  1072. law.

1073. He was so poor in spirit,

  1074. always trusting his

  1075. father to provide every

1076. step of the way, even

  1077. trusting his father that

1078. he would be raised from

  1079. the dead.

1080. Every step of the way he

  1081. was poor in spirit.

  1082. Who as he approached

  1083. Jerusalem, he weeps.

  1084. He mourns.

1085. If only you would be

  1086. gathered to me.

1087. He mourns the sin of

  1088. this world.

1089. He is the one who

  1090. mourns.

1091. Who is so merciful, he

1092. was known as the friend

  1093. of sinners.

  1094. He's the merciful one.

1095. Who always thirsted to do

1096. what was right in the eyes

  1097. of his father.

1098. Who is so pure in heart

1099. that even in the garden of

  1100. Gethsemane, about to face

  1101. the cross, sweating drops

1102. of blood, he prays not my

1103. will but yours be done.

1104. Every fibre of his being

1105. wanted to go the other

1106. way and yet he's purer in

  1107. heart.

1108. He loves the Lord his God

  1109. with all his heart.

  1110. Who is so meek.

  1111. Being accused and slandered

1112. at his trial, he didn't

  1113. retaliate.

  1114. He didn't fight back.

1115. But entrusted himself to his

  1116. father's will.

  1117. That is incredible meekness.

1118. Whose passion was to see

1119. people at peace with God.

1120. So much so that while being

  1121. crucified, his nails going

  1122. through his hands, father

  1123. forgive them.

  1124. What a peacemaker.

1125. And who accepted the fact that

1126. belonging to his father would

1127. mean being rejected by the

  1128. entire world.

  1129. He accepted that persecution

  1130. because belonging to his

  1131. father was worth it.

  1132. He's the blessed one.

  1133. It's a totally different way of

  1134. life.

  1135. And that's the point.

1136. We need to be emptied of

1137. ourself and look to him to have

1138. his life given to us.

1139. He has come to make us empty

1140. and then give us his enviable

  1141. life.

1142. So that looking only to him

1143. we can say, in Christ I am

  1144. blessed.

  1145. No matter what circumstances

1146. you might be in, I am blessed

  1147. if I have him.

1148. If I have his life.

  1149. Could you imagine the

1150. difference it would make in our

1151. families, in our workplaces, in

1152. this church, if we could always

  1153. say I am blessed.

1154. It would just transform it all.

1155. It would be such a difference as

1156. like a light in a dark room.

  1157. As a city on a hill.

1158. This kind of attitude would just

  1159. stand out.

1160. Our priorities and goals would

  1161. change.

1162. Instead of chasing after the

1163. illusion of blessedness in the

1164. kingdom of earth as if we need,

1165. we're clinging on to it as if we

  1166. have to have it.

1167. This attitude would just stand

  1168. out.

1169. It would be so different.

1170. And the promises empower us to do

  1171. this.

1172. The promises are the ones that

1173. empower us to have these

  1174. attitudes.

1175. If we believe we are blessed,

  1176. then we'll be merciful.

1177. Then we'll be pure in heart.

1178. If we believe we have it all in

1179. Christ, then we can start to

  1180. resemble Christ.

1181. But I think we'll only stand out,

1182. we'll only be light in our world,

1183. if it can be clearly seen that we're

1184. not clinging to this kingdom on

  1185. earth.

1186. If people can tell that it's not

  1187. our circumstances that we're

1188. relying on to be blessed, and yet

1189. we have a joy and peace that's the

1190. envy of all, that will show that

1191. we belong to a different kingdom.

1192. There is a joy that's from outside

  1193. this world.

1194. That no matter what our

1195. circumstances, we can say in Jesus

  1196. Christ, I am blessed.

1197. If you don't know this blessing yet,

1198. what are you waiting for?

1199. Will you pray with me?

1200. Father, empty us and fill us up with

  1201. yourself.

1202. Please help us to see Jesus as

1203. just living that enviable life.

1204. Thank you for your gracious promises

1205. that we can have it all in you.

1206. Lord, please speak to each one of us and

1207. help us to let go of whatever we're

1208. clinging to in this earth at the

1209. moment, so that we can look to you and

1210. know that we are blessed and then act

  1211. like we are blessed.

1212. Lord, do this so that people would see

1213. Jesus through us as a church family in

1214. the way that we live, and so that others

1215. might come to know the peace and joy that

  1216. we now have.

1217. I pray this in Jesus' name.

  1218. Amen.

  1219. Amen.

  1220. Amen.

  1221. Amen.

  1222. Amen.

  1223. Amen.

  1224. Amen.

  1225. Amen.

  1226. Amen.

  1227. Amen.

  1228. Amen.
