  1. So this morning we're reading from Matthew chapter 5 verses 1 to 16.

    Matthew 5:1–16

  2. Matthew 5.

  3. Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.

  4. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

  5. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  6. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

  7. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

  8. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

  9. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

  10. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

  11. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

  12. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  13. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

  14. Blessed are the pure in spirit, for they shall be called sons of the king of heaven.

  15. For so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

  16. You are the salt of the earth.

  17. But if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?

  18. It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

  19. You are the light of the world.

  20. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden, nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket,

  21. but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.

  22. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works

  23. and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

  24. Morning, everyone.

  25. Let's give the kids a second.

  26. Okay, I'm going to show you some slides in a second, some pictures.

  27. Now, I want you to do a couple of things for me.

  28. The first thing is, I want you to try and guess who the people are in each slide.

  29. So, Koo will bring them up in a second.

  30. So, you're going to tell me who are the people in each slide,

  31. and then I want you to try and guess the relationship between these people.

  32. So, Koo just put up the first slide there.

  33. We'll bring it up.

  34. Who can tell me who are these people in this slide?

  35. I can hear Jacinda Ardern, I think is what people are saying.

  36. Yep.

  37. Anyone for the other one?

  38. Okay.

  39. Mum.

  40. Okay.

  41. No.

  42. All right.

  43. That's Annette King.

  44. We'll see how we go with the next one.

  45. How about these two?

  46. Who are these two?

  47. Boris Johnson.

  48. Yep.

  49. That's the Prime Minister of the UK.

  50. Anyone else for the other lady on the left there?

  51. Ann Jenkins.

  52. Yep.

  53. Thanks, Liz Cameron.

  54. It's not Ann Jenkins.

  55. Okay.

  56. No one.

  57. Interesting.

  58. Okay.

  59. The next one.

  60. How about these two?

  61. Yes.

  62. I can hear it.

  63. It's Yixing Ping.

  64. I probably said his name not very well.

  65. Apologies for those who know how it should be pronounced.

  66. Anyone else for the one on the left?

  67. Grace Evangelical.

  68. All right.

  69. That is Chong Chong Yi.

  70. Okay.

  71. And we've got one more.

  72. Anyone for these two?

  73. Joe Biden.

  74. Thank you.

  75. Anyone for the guy on the left?

  76. Okay.

  77. Well, that's Graham Fletcher.

  78. Sorry, that's not Graham Fletcher.

  79. That's Michael Goldman.

  80. I'm getting myself mixed up.

  81. How could I forget who that is?

  82. No, look.

  83. Clearly, I never expected anyone to get the people on the left.

  84. The people on the left are ambassadors to Australia for the respective person on the right.

  85. So, in this case, Joe Biden is the world leader.

  86. America, of course, is the country.

  87. And Michael Goldman is his ambassador to Australia.

  88. And now, if you think about ambassadors, what is the purpose of an ambassador?

  89. What do they do?

  90. Like, they go out, they talk to people in the country and they're in.

  91. They represent the leader that they're for.

  92. So, Joe Biden, for example, he'll say something.

  93. You know, I want you to tell Australia this.

  94. Michael Goldman will go out and he'll convey the message.

  95. They try and convince people in the country that they're in about the message and the purpose

  96. that they want to get across for their country.

  97. They stick up for their country.

  98. They represent their leader.

  99. That's the whole purpose of what an ambassador does.

  100. So, why am I talking about ambassadors?

  101. I think you'll probably know it's not to try and get involved in world politics.

  102. Today, we're talking about being ambassadors for God.

  103. You see, we here at Grace, if you're a Christian, you are God's ambassador.

  104. And just as every ambassador has a leader, as we saw on the slides there, so do we.

  105. We have a leader.

  106. And our leader is Jesus Christ.

  107. You see, we follow him.

  108. We represent him.

  109. And it's not because we're in the same geographical area, clearly, like those guys on the screen.

  110. We follow Jesus because of who he is and what he has done for us.

  111. You see, Jesus is the king of the world.

  112. We know that here at Grace.

  113. It's something that we're very used to hearing.

  114. He is the king of the world.

  115. You see, without Jesus, we know there is no hope for this world.

  116. We, if we are not followers of Jesus, we rebel against God.

  117. We, before we became Christians, rebel against God.

  118. We did not want to turn back to him.

  119. Sin, it's what we know sin as.

  120. We said we want nothing to do with you.

  121. And we did not have any inclination of coming back.

  122. Now, what's the consequence of that?

  123. We all know is that we're cut off from God.

  124. We're cut off from God who gives us life.

  125. And the consequence of that is eternal death.

  126. We are cut off from the creator of this world.

  127. And so in Romans 6, verse 23, it says the wages of sin is death.

    Romans 6:23

  128. Basically, the payment and the consequence for rebelling against God is death.

  129. And so Jesus comes in at that point in our relationship with God and restores the relationship.

  130. Jesus gives his life.

  131. He goes through that suffering and that pain that we hear about every week here when we come to church.

  132. Crucified on a cross.

  133. The ripping apart of that relationship between a perfect father and a perfect son.

  134. He goes through all of that for the glory of God and the consequences that we can be saved.

  135. Something that we know well if you're a Christian.

  136. You would have heard this many times.

  137. Romans 6, verse 23, the wages of sin is death.

    Romans 6:23

  138. But it doesn't stop there, does it?

  139. It keeps going if you know this verse well.

  140. But the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.

  141. And this is the Jesus that is talking to the disciples on the mount in this story.

  142. This is the Jesus who the disciples follow.

  143. He is our king and that's who we are called to represent.

  144. We are Jesus' ambassadors to this world.

  145. If you've got your Bible there, and hopefully you've already been following along a bit,

  146. as Brie read, chapter 5, verses 13 to 16, we're going to kind of do it a little bit in reverse, this section.

  147. But let's start at 13.

  148. You are the salt of the earth.

  149. But if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?

  150. It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

  151. You are the light of the world.

  152. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

  153. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand.

  154. And it gives light to all in the house.

  155. In the same way, let your light shine before others,

  156. so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

  157. You see, Israel was originally God's people.

  158. God intended for Israel to be his light to the world.

  159. He said to them, I'm choosing you, I'm saving you, and you are going to be the way that the world knows who I am.

  160. It's what he said to them.

  161. That was their purpose for being chosen.

  162. But we know the story.

  163. The Old Testament is all about this.

  164. It's basically this cycle of God saves them.

  165. They're really grateful initially.

  166. Then they rebel and they reject him.

  167. They want nothing to do with him.

  168. And then they get into trouble and then they go, oh, no, we're in trouble.

  169. Why have you deserted us?

  170. And then God saves them again.

  171. And then that cycle just keeps continuing.

  172. But that's the purpose of what he called them to do.

  173. But here Jesus says to his disciples, you are now my ambassadors to the world.

  174. You are the way that the world will know who I am.

  175. We are Jesus' ambassadors.

  176. It's who we are.

  177. It's our status.

  178. That's what we are in Jesus.

  179. We are his ambassadors.

  180. You see that bit at the start of 13 and the same at the start of 14.

  181. You are the salt of the earth.

  182. You are the light of the world.

  183. He's not saying if you choose to be and, you know, it's something you can do if you want.

  184. You can follow me and if you want to be the salt of the world, then go for it.

  185. He's saying you are these things.

  186. It's who you are.

  187. It's your status.

  188. It's your very being as someone who follows Jesus.

  189. And so the salt and the light metaphors, they are two metaphors, but essentially they say the same thing.

  190. If you think about salt, I'm sure everyone here has salt in their home somewhere.

  191. I'm hoping.

  192. If you don't, then my wife will be very disappointed in you because salt is great.

  193. I'll be disappointed in you.

  194. Salt's amazing.

  195. But what's it for?

  196. Like, why do you put it in food?

  197. Because you want to make stuff taste better generally.

  198. Yes, you can preserve it, but we're not going to talk about that for a second.

  199. It doesn't, you know, it's another use.

  200. But basically put it in food to make it taste better.

  201. Now, if the salt just stayed in a little rock and didn't do anything and didn't spread to the food around it, it would be pointless.

  202. There'd be no point.

  203. You'd basically be eating grit and so you'd take it out.

  204. But salt spreads to the food around it.

  205. It changes the food around it.

  206. It makes it better.

  207. In a similar way, and Don talked about this in his kids' talk, Jesus says, we are light.

  208. And what does light do?

  209. It impacts the area around it.

  210. It gets rid of darkness.

  211. It's so that, you know, we can see it changes the space around it.

  212. If we put it, you know, under a basket, well, what's the point?

  213. Like, the whole point of the light is that it changes the area around it.

  214. If it's bright in the day, for example, we don't need to change the brightness so we turn off the light.

  215. It's not needed.

  216. That's the whole point.

  217. And Jesus says here, you are the salt of the world.

  218. You are the light of the world.

  219. The whole point is that the way that you live will make the world know who I am.

  220. We are people who represent God.

  221. And for what reason?

  222. In verse 16.

  223. So that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

  224. Now, Koo, I'm hoping you can bring up the next slide for me.

  225. If we think about Vicky from the UK again, Vicky Trudell.

  226. Now, what does she do in her day-to-day job?

  227. She's the ambassador for the UK to Australia.

  228. What does she do?

  229. Well, she doesn't stay in her embassy.

  230. She goes out.

  231. She goes into the country, Australia.

  232. She meets with people.

  233. She's trying to be like, yes, Britain's the best to get everyone on board with the cause.

  234. She's really keen for people to hear what her country is saying.

  235. She represents her leader, says what her leader wants her to say.

  236. And we are the same.

  237. We are ambassadors for God.

  238. It's just that the message that Vicky is spreading is she's trying to be salt and light,

  239. saying that Britain is great to Australia.

  240. But we are God's ambassadors, representing Jesus and spreading his gospel.

  241. Thanks, Koo.

  242. If you're a Christian, do you live each day remembering who you are in Christ?

  243. You are an ambassador for him.

  244. You are salt and light for him.

  245. Do you live a life reflective of those verses that we heard at the start,

  246. the Beatitude verses, verses 2 to 10?

  247. You know, with humility, relying on our king.

  248. Because you are an ambassador at every point in your life.

  249. It's not a Sunday morning thing.

  250. It's not when you're at Bible study thing.

  251. It's not when you're in a youth group thing.

  252. At every point, in every time, in every situation, whether you are by yourself,

  253. whether you're with other people, whether you're with family, friends, colleagues,

  254. you are an ambassador for Jesus.

  255. It is who you are.

  256. So when you think about the things that you watch on TV,

  257. do you think about and make those decisions based on who you are as an ambassador for Jesus?

  258. In what you let your kids watch, in the jokes that you laugh at,

  259. in the way that you engage with your non-Christian friends.

  260. Is this how you think about that relationship?

  261. That at all times, to those people, you are an ambassador for Jesus.

  262. You know, responding to bad situations, the way you might get frustrated when things go wrong,

  263. things that annoy you, how you react, how you spend your money,

  264. how you prioritize things in your life.

  265. Do you make decisions that reflect your status?

  266. We are ambassadors for Jesus.

  267. Now, for me, I think I have a generally good relationship with my non-Christian friends and colleagues.

  268. I don't hide the fact that I'm a Christian.

  269. Like, all of them know that I'm a Christian.

  270. I don't, you know, they say, what are you doing on the weekend?

  271. It's not like I go, Sunday morning, I'm going to a cafe and like pretend like I don't go to church or something.

  272. They all know.

  273. So I'm not hiding the fact that I'm an ambassador.

  274. But I think about some of the areas in my life.

  275. And I think for me, a big one is probably my school friends.

  276. They're not Christian.

  277. None of them are Christian, actually.

  278. And I think about the relationships I have with them.

  279. And I think that although they know I'm a Christian, I reflect on the way that I relate to them.

  280. And I have to conclude that in many respects, I don't think I live a life that reflects my status.

  281. I don't live a life that says I am an ambassador for Jesus and this is who I represent and this is what he stands for.

  282. See, Jesus here says to me and to you, we are the salt of the earth.

  283. We are the light of the world.

  284. Put your light on a stand so that it can impact others.

  285. That is your whole, that is what you do as an ambassador for me.

  286. See, we are, you are, I am, Jesus' kingdom ambassadors.

  287. But there are consequences for being an ambassador, aren't there?

  288. Matthew chapter 5, verses 10 to 12.

    Matthew 5:10–12

  289. Start at verse 10.

  290. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake.

  291. For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  292. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

  293. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven.

  294. For so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

  295. See, Jesus here says that if you live your status of being an ambassador for him,

  296. if you live a life that reflects Jesus, if you tell people about Jesus,

  297. well, at some point, people are going to hate you for it.

  298. You see, the kingdom of heaven and earth don't mix fundamentally.

  299. What we believe in and what we care about do not match.

  300. And Dave mentioned it last week.

  301. Who values meekness?

  302. I mean, seriously, who, like, I don't go to work going,

  303. today, I'm going to be the meekest person I can be.

  304. I'm just going to be out there, you know, people are going to say stuff,

  305. and I'm just going to be real meek.

  306. No one.

  307. No one does that in our world.

  308. Who values being poor in spirit?

  309. What kind of self-help person on YouTube says,

  310. you need to be more poor in spirit?

  311. Fantastic.

  312. Think of yourself lesser.

  313. Think of Jesus more.

  314. No non-Christian self-help person talks that way.

  315. Be hungry and thirsty.

  316. Who says, oh, you know, hate water.

  317. Two and a half days, I'm going to push it just so I can feel that experience

  318. of not having water in me.

  319. No one says that.

  320. You see, the kingdom life, and I guess what those,

  321. the crux of those verses is saying is that we are to be dependent on Jesus.

  322. Of course, it's not really about water and being hungry or thirsty,

  323. but it's about being dependent on Jesus, relying on him for strength,

  324. relying on him for being our comfort.

  325. See, the Australian dream is not to be dependent on someone else, is it?

  326. The Australian dream is that I would be, you know,

  327. my self-made man or self-made woman.

  328. I'm out there.

  329. We respect people, in fact, I think, who do this themselves,

  330. who are able to go from nothing to everything,

  331. and they've done it all their way.

  332. That's who we respect.

  333. That's the leaders that we look up to.

  334. But if we are ambassadors for Jesus, representing this way of life,

  335. living a life that is reflective of Jesus,

  336. then we can expect pushback for it.

  337. You can expect persecution for living the life that Jesus calls us to.

  338. Because the world does not accept Jesus.

  339. Now, Dave mentioned here between verses 10 and 11,

  340. if you were here last week, you might remember this,

  341. he said that up until verse 10,

  342. it's kind of saying a lot of those and these.

  343. So, you know, the blessed, those who are, et cetera.

  344. And then in verse 11, it swaps to you.

  345. He uses the word you.

  346. And Dave said that this is kind of reflective of the fact that

  347. he starts addressing the disciples directly.

  348. And although I think a lot of this stuff that he's talking about here

  349. applies to us,

  350. I think there are points at which it is helpful to remember that distinction

  351. in the passage.

  352. Because what Jesus says in these verses,

  353. I think actually does mean something different to the disciples

  354. than what it means to us here in Australia.

  355. Now, I shouldn't say that it means something different.

  356. The meaning is actually the same,

  357. but I think the consequences are different.

  358. Sorry, there's a better way of saying it.

  359. You see, as Jesus is talking to his disciples,

  360. he knows that for them in their immediate future is persecution,

  361. is suffering.

  362. Just read the book of Acts.

  363. You can see it.

  364. It's plain as day.

  365. And I think that they, by and large,

  366. went through persecution that we probably,

  367. I don't think in our day-to-day lives,

  368. will experience, I think, for most of us.

  369. Probably most of us, not even for a day,

  370. will we have that level of persecution.

  371. You see, to the disciples, Jesus says,

  372. blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you

  373. and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

  374. And it does mean something different to the apostles

  375. than what it means to us here in Australia.

  376. Look, if I was giving this talk in another country,

  377. some countries around the world,

  378. it would be a like-for-like comparison.

  379. In some ways, we're fortunate in Australia not to have that.

  380. But if we just talk about the death of the 12 apostles for a second.

  381. Now, a lot of this comes from,

  382. there are some that come from the Bible.

  383. There's one or two that come from the Bible.

  384. A lot of it comes from Christian tradition

  385. and early Christian writers.

  386. So take it as a flavour of what the apostles went through,

  387. not as a historical narrative.

  388. But this is largely how people kind of generally think

  389. that a lot of the apostles died.

  390. Now, my wife said at this point,

  391. if you have young kids in here,

  392. it might be a good time to just, I don't know,

  393. run them out or something.

  394. It's not going to be gruesome or anything.

  395. But this is how the apostles died.

  396. So I think let's start with James,

  397. who we do know because he's in Acts 12.

  398. It's recorded how he died.

  399. He died because he was killed with a sword

  400. for being an ambassador for Jesus.

  401. Peter, the apostle Peter,

  402. for being an ambassador for Jesus

  403. is supposed to have been crucified upside down.

  404. He didn't think it was good enough

  405. to be crucified in the way Jesus was.

  406. So he asked to be crucified upside down.

  407. Andrew, for being an ambassador for Jesus,

  408. was supposedly crucified on an X-shaped cross.

  409. So two points in the ground instead of one.

  410. The most common way Bartholomew is thought to have died

  411. was being flayed,

  412. which is basically I whip you

  413. until all the skin comes off your back.

  414. And then they beheaded him

  415. for being an ambassador for Jesus.

  416. Thomas, for being an ambassador for Jesus,

  417. was stabbed with spears.

  418. Other apostles are stoned.

  419. We know that Stephen is stoned,

  420. although he's not strictly an apostle.

  421. Now, others are beheaded,

  422. boiled in oil, beaten.

  423. All of this persecution

  424. that the apostles went through,

  425. all for living as who they were,

  426. their status as an ambassador for Jesus.

  427. See, by being salt to the world around them,

  428. by being light,

  429. they brought many to Jesus' cause,

  430. but they outraged a huge amount more.

  431. They were joyous in persecution.

  432. They were joyous representing their king

  433. because it's who they were,

  434. but it didn't come without consequence.

  435. See, the reward is great for them in heaven.

  436. They lived the life that they were called to.

  437. They lived as ambassadors for Jesus.

  438. And look, as I've said,

  439. even though clearly what they went through

  440. is probably something we'll never experience,

  441. in some ways, the principle is the same.

  442. If we are ambassadors for Jesus,

  443. if we live the way that we know Jesus has called us to,

  444. and I think if you're a Christian here,

  445. you probably have a general idea,

  446. then there will be many who do not like it.

  447. They will see your life

  448. and they will not like the way that you live.

  449. Just like when the apostles did it

  450. and just like when the prophets did it,

  451. as it says in verse 12.

  452. You see, persecution is what it means

  453. to be an ambassador for Jesus.

  454. It comes with the territory.

  455. To help illustrate this,

  456. Koo's going to bring up another slide for us.

  457. We're going to move away from using Vicky as an illustration.

  458. So let's go to the next one.

  459. And we're going to use these two.

  460. Now, I'm not trying to get political,

  461. so I've used both.

  462. That'll come back up in a second.

  463. But these are the ambassadors to Australia and China

  464. for their respective countries.

  465. So the one on the left is China's ambassador to Australia.

  466. The one on the right is Australia's to China.

  467. Now, I think it's fair to say,

  468. and not getting political,

  469. but I think we can all agree here

  470. that the relationship between our two countries

  471. at the moment,

  472. is not in a very good space.

  473. I don't think anyone here would argue with me on that one.

  474. Now, being an ambassador for China in Australia

  475. or Australia and China

  476. at the moment is not going to be winning you many friends

  477. in the place that you're in.

  478. You know, for example,

  479. I don't think that there's many people in these countries

  480. who are going to be inviting their ambassador

  481. to have state dinners.

  482. No, Australia's definitely not doing that for the Chinese ambassador.

  483. China's not doing that for Australia.

  484. I don't think,

  485. I don't even think that the leaders of China

  486. are talking to Australian leaders at all at the moment.

  487. You know, by being who they are,

  488. by being an ambassador,

  489. they, you know,

  490. you can imagine that all the words that they say,

  491. whether in the embassy or outside or in a,

  492. you know, a group of people,

  493. they're all being monitored.

  494. Australia does it as well, I guarantee.

  495. We listen in on the conversations through radio devices

  496. and tech that I don't understand.

  497. But the problem is when you're talking about groups

  498. who just fundamentally disagree on so much stuff,

  499. this is the consequence.

  500. But as ambassadors,

  501. they're tasked with saying unpopular things

  502. to the country that they're in.

  503. We don't like a lot of the stuff that Chung says to us.

  504. And I'm sure that they don't like a lot of the stuff

  505. that our ambassador says to them.

  506. It's really, you know,

  507. it's not a good relationship at the moment.

  508. I'm sure that they're heavily monitored wherever they go.

  509. I guarantee that there's no way

  510. that they can just walk down the street

  511. and, you know, have no kind of attention.

  512. I'm sure that does not happen.

  513. And now I think, you know,

  514. it's hard to think that either of these two

  515. would be killed for being ambassadors.

  516. You know, the outrage would be ridiculous.

  517. But the fact is that they are ambassadors.

  518. And for that,

  519. they receive some level of persecution.

  520. They receive pushback for being who they are.

  521. If we are Christians,

  522. it's the same thing.

  523. You see, being an ambassador for God

  524. brings persecution with it.

  525. Now, at this point,

  526. I want to take you through some reflecting

  527. I've been doing on my life,

  528. brought on by this passage,

  529. which I think is a common experience

  530. for people who prepare talks.

  531. But there's one question that comes up for me

  532. more than any other

  533. when I was going through this.

  534. And that is when it seems here,

  535. like Jesus is saying,

  536. that persecution and pushback

  537. and people disliking his message

  538. comes with the territory of being an ambassador.

  539. When that seems to be the given

  540. of the way that things work in this world.

  541. And why do I find myself experiencing

  542. so little of it?

  543. Why is it that I don't experience this

  544. in my everyday life?

  545. Now, I think some of it can be answered

  546. by the fact that I live in Australia.

  547. We're a safe country.

  548. I think that's the reason

  549. no one's, you know,

  550. busting down the door to try and kill me.

  551. Strong rule of law,

  552. strong police presence.

  553. We're a Christian nation,

  554. at least from Christian heritage,

  555. I should say.

  556. We have freedom of religion.

  557. I think that can explain

  558. some of the, you know,

  559. death and torture end of the spectrum.

  560. But I don't think it can explain

  561. the lack of lower grade persecution

  562. in my life.

  563. And I think like people

  564. not wanting to invite me to stuff

  565. because I'm always trying to bring up

  566. Jesus in a conversation.

  567. I just don't want to hear

  568. that type of thing.

  569. You know, people giving me weird looks

  570. in the street because I'm trying

  571. to engage them with the gospel

  572. in Cole's shopping centre

  573. out the front of Glendale.

  574. You have friends and family

  575. being annoyed at the way

  576. that I live my life.

  577. You're wasting your life.

  578. Like, why do you care about this stuff?

  579. You're just wasting your life.

  580. You're giving all your money

  581. to other things.

  582. It's stupid.

  583. Colleagues not thinking about me

  584. for a promotion

  585. because I'm always trying

  586. to bring up Jesus in a conversation.

  587. Like, I'm just an annoying person

  588. to be around.

  589. You know, I don't want to receive

  590. a negative comment

  591. on my Facebook page

  592. because I've posted

  593. some Christian gospel message.

  594. I don't want to have to get

  595. into some argument

  596. with someone about the fact

  597. that they think I'm wrong.

  598. You know, people making jokes

  599. about my faith,

  600. like, you're a Christian.

  601. Good luck with that.

  602. You know, mocking me,

  603. thinking I'm a loser.

  604. You know, even if I don't say it,

  605. I can see it on their face.

  606. Now, I'm not trying to compare

  607. the levels of persecution

  608. between us and the apostles.

  609. Clearly, this is on a spectrum

  610. where you've got death

  611. on one end and, I don't know,

  612. hurt feelings or something

  613. on the other end

  614. of the spectrum.

  615. But I think that the thing

  616. is still the same.

  617. If you put your light

  618. on a stand,

  619. if you are salt

  620. to this earth,

  621. if you are light

  622. to the world,

  623. then you will receive pushback.

  624. In fact, I think I've come

  625. to the conclusion

  626. that I don't think

  627. you can be

  628. a true ambassador for God

  629. and not receive

  630. some level of persecution

  631. at some point

  632. in your life.

  633. I look at our world

  634. and I just don't think

  635. it's possible.

  636. Now, when we're representing

  637. him well

  638. to our non-Christian friends,

  639. to our family,

  640. to society,

  641. we should expect

  642. to receive

  643. some level

  644. of pushback.

  645. And so I think

  646. I've concluded,

  647. at least for me,

  648. that a lack of persecution

  649. in my life

  650. over an extended period

  651. of time

  652. is probably due

  653. to one of two things.

  654. One,

  655. that I am hiding

  656. in my embassy

  657. too scared

  658. of what the consequences

  659. might be

  660. if I really make it known

  661. that I am an ambassador

  662. for Jesus.

  663. or,

  664. number two,

  665. probably in some ways

  666. a little bit more insidious,

  667. I've started to like

  668. the way of life

  669. of the people

  670. I'm representing too.

  671. And the fact

  672. that I don't receive

  673. persecution

  674. is because my life

  675. does not look

  676. any different.

  677. And I think

  678. I can see

  679. some of this

  680. in our church.

  681. And I say

  682. this as someone

  683. who I think

  684. I would say

  685. I'm a core member

  686. of this church.

  687. I've been here

  688. for about eight years.

  689. But it's a very

  690. comfortable place

  691. to be,

  692. isn't it,

  693. as Gracie Evangelical,

  694. to be an insular church.

  695. We all

  696. are here,

  697. generally,

  698. by and large,

  699. ambassadors for Jesus.

  700. You all believe

  701. the same thing

  702. that I believe.

  703. You know,

  704. I'm not going to receive

  705. persecution

  706. for getting up here

  707. and saying that

  708. I think Jesus

  709. is the way

  710. we should live our life.

  711. In fact,

  712. probably the exact opposite.

  713. You're probably

  714. going to be

  715. encouraging

  716. and supportive

  717. of me living life

  718. this way.

  719. You see,

  720. it's safe

  721. to stay

  722. in our embassy.

  723. It's safe

  724. to live that way.

  725. And I must wonder

  726. how much

  727. do we as a church

  728. really want

  729. to engage

  730. with our community?

  731. How much

  732. do we want

  733. to be a light

  734. on the stand

  735. to Glendale

  736. and Cardiff

  737. and Edgeworth

  738. and Argentine,

  739. Ellemore Vale?

  740. You know,

  741. we have a building

  742. in the area.

  743. I think we're happy

  744. for people

  745. to come to us.

  746. I think we love

  747. having visitors.

  748. We're welcoming

  749. visitors.

  750. We have a website.

  751. You know,

  752. we keep it updated.

  753. We make sure

  754. that people

  755. can find us

  756. on the website.

  757. We have a logo

  758. out the front.

  759. We have a Facebook page.

  760. But how often

  761. do we meet

  762. the community

  763. where they are at?

  764. Because a good

  765. ambassador for Jesus

  766. doesn't stay

  767. in the church

  768. confined

  769. to other ambassadors.

  770. See,

  771. there are consequences

  772. for being

  773. God's kingdom ambassador.

  774. And are we

  775. willing to accept

  776. those consequences?

  777. are we willing

  778. to have people

  779. misrepresent grace?

  780. That church,

  781. they just spread hate.

  782. They hate homosexuals.

  783. They're just telling

  784. everyone how they,

  785. you know,

  786. they live in life

  787. the wrong way.

  788. Are we willing

  789. for that type

  790. of persecution?

  791. Are we willing

  792. to potentially

  793. have negative media

  794. attention because

  795. we have a group

  796. of people

  797. out the front

  798. of Coles

  799. in Glendale

  800. telling people

  801. the gospel?

  802. Imagine for a second

  803. that we own

  804. the BCF building

  805. next door.

  806. Suspend your

  807. imagination for a second.

  808. Sorry,

  809. suspend reality

  810. for a second.

  811. Use your imagination.

  812. Would we be willing

  813. on the side

  814. of that building

  815. to create

  816. a giant billboard?

  817. Jesus equals life.

  818. All else

  819. equals death.

  820. Now,

  821. you believe

  822. that message,

  823. don't you?

  824. That's something

  825. that we all

  826. believe here.

  827. But imagine

  828. the reaction

  829. we would get

  830. if we put that

  831. on the side

  832. of the building.

  833. Are we willing

  834. to accept

  835. the consequence

  836. that,

  837. you know,

  838. the council

  839. will be on to us,

  840. that we could have

  841. people picketing

  842. in the car park?

  843. Are we willing

  844. to stand out

  845. in a way

  846. that will draw

  847. people to Jesus,

  848. even if it means

  849. that many others

  850. will hate us

  851. for it?

  852. Now,

  853. I'm not saying

  854. that persecution

  855. is the goal here.

  856. Persecution

  857. for persecution's sake

  858. is pointless.

  859. We shouldn't be

  860. trying to do

  861. these things

  862. so that we,

  863. you know,

  864. suffer.

  865. It's not,

  866. that's not the point.

  867. We're not sadists

  868. or anything.

  869. I think that

  870. if we are

  871. representing Jesus,

  872. if we are being

  873. ambassadors,

  874. if we are being

  875. salt and light

  876. in this world,

  877. then persecution

  878. comes with

  879. the territory.

  880. as verse 11

  881. says,

  882. you are blessed

  883. when others

  884. revile you

  885. and persecute

  886. you and utter

  887. all kinds of evil

  888. against you

  889. falsely on my

  890. account.

  891. Are we okay

  892. with being

  893. treated differently?

  894. With being

  895. known as people

  896. who go to

  897. that church?

  898. Because

  899. Jesus'

  900. gospel

  901. ruffles

  902. feathers.

  903. There is

  904. no way

  905. the gospel

  906. in this world

  907. can go together

  908. without there

  909. being some

  910. type of pushback.

  911. See,

  912. we are known

  913. as a nice

  914. church of grace.

  915. God

  916. and sometimes

  917. I wonder

  918. if we are

  919. too concerned

  920. with keeping

  921. it that way

  922. at the

  923. expense of

  924. being a

  925. light in

  926. our area.

  927. See,

  928. we need to

  929. remember

  930. who we

  931. represent.

  932. We represent

  933. Jesus who

  934. valued our

  935. lives so

  936. much

  937. that he

  938. went through

  939. a level of

  940. suffering that

  941. we will

  942. never

  943. understand.

  944. Without

  945. Jesus,

  946. every single

  947. person that

  948. you know,

  949. without

  950. Jesus,

  951. friends,

  952. colleagues,

  953. people that

  954. you do

  955. sport with,

  956. people you

  957. see in your

  958. community,

  959. have a

  960. mums group

  961. with,

  962. go to

  963. school with,

  964. all of

  965. them have

  966. an eternal

  967. death if

  968. they do

  969. not know

  970. Jesus.

  971. remember

  972. who we

  973. represent.

  974. Jesus

  975. Christ is

  976. the one

  977. who we

  978. are

  979. ambassadors

  980. for.

  981. And the

  982. other point

  983. that I

  984. mentioned

  985. before

  986. talking about

  987. that was,

  988. and I

  989. guess I'm

  990. coming back

  991. to,

  992. is that

  993. perhaps

  994. the reason

  995. is that

  996. we actually

  997. don't stand

  998. out.

  999. We like

  1000. the way

  1001. of life

  1002. of the

  1003. people that

  1004. we're

  1005. representing

  1006. to.

  1007. You see,

  1008. in our

  1009. society,

  1010. relying on

  1011. Jesus is

  1012. 100%

  1013. optional.

  1014. I think

  1015. by and

  1016. large,

  1017. you know,

  1018. we're

  1019. rarely in

  1020. want.

  1021. I don't

  1022. think there's

  1023. maybe

  1024. occasionally

  1025. and for

  1026. some people

  1027. more than

  1028. others.

  1029. But,

  1030. you know,

  1031. we've got

  1032. great government

  1033. support.

  1034. Generally,

  1035. we've got

  1036. great services.

  1037. We,

  1038. at least

  1039. here,

  1040. we have a

  1041. lot of

  1042. people that

  1043. we can

  1044. rely on

  1045. if we

  1046. get into

  1047. trouble.

  1048. But we

  1049. don't have

  1050. to look

  1051. different if

  1052. we don't

  1053. want to.

  1054. In fact,

  1055. it's easier

  1056. to not look

  1057. different.

  1058. I think

  1059. that's

  1060. very clear.

  1061. Why be

  1062. meek when

  1063. I can

  1064. be

  1065. respected?

  1066. Why be

  1067. merciful when

  1068. I can get

  1069. what's mine

  1070. and I can

  1071. make things

  1072. better for

  1073. myself?

  1074. Why be

  1075. poor in

  1076. spirit when

  1077. I can be

  1078. self-reliant

  1079. and self-confident?

  1080. See,

  1081. I don't

  1082. need Jesus

  1083. to be

  1084. successful

  1085. in this

  1086. world.

  1087. In fact,

  1088. it's probably

  1089. the opposite.

  1090. If I

  1091. don't have

  1092. Jesus in

  1093. this world,

  1094. I'll be

  1095. more successful.

  1096. You think

  1097. about school

  1098. amongst your

  1099. friends,

  1100. you know,

  1101. your workplace.

  1102. Maybe it's a

  1103. social club that

  1104. you're involved

  1105. in.

  1106. If you want

  1107. to become

  1108. popular,

  1109. just do what

  1110. they do.

  1111. It's not

  1112. rocket science.

  1113. That's how

  1114. people get

  1115. popular.

  1116. Make the

  1117. same jokes.

  1118. Care about

  1119. the same

  1120. frivolous

  1121. things that

  1122. they care

  1123. about.

  1124. Make them

  1125. the centre

  1126. of your

  1127. life.

  1128. See,

  1129. being an

  1130. ambassador is

  1131. not an

  1132. easy thing.

  1133. It requires

  1134. us to run

  1135. counter-cultural.

  1136. It requires

  1137. us at some

  1138. points,

  1139. I think,

  1140. to perhaps

  1141. not give

  1142. up,

  1143. to give

  1144. up things

  1145. that we

  1146. might otherwise

  1147. wish we

  1148. could have.

  1149. Living the

  1150. life of

  1151. someone who

  1152. doesn't

  1153. follow Jesus

  1154. can be

  1155. very attractive.

  1156. You know,

  1157. for example,

  1158. I get half

  1159. of my Sunday

  1160. back.

  1161. I don't have

  1162. to be here

  1163. with you

  1164. guys.

  1165. I can be

  1166. doing whatever

  1167. I want to

  1168. be doing.

  1169. I can be

  1170. out there,

  1171. I can be

  1172. going to

  1173. the shops,

  1174. I can be

  1175. playing extra

  1176. soccer on

  1177. a Sunday.

  1178. You know,

  1179. fantastic.

  1180. I don't have

  1181. to pay Dave

  1182. Bott's wage.

  1183. I don't want

  1184. to give my

  1185. money to Dave

  1186. Bott.

  1187. What am I

  1188. doing?

  1189. I could be

  1190. giving it to

  1191. my new car

  1192. or something

  1193. like that.

  1194. Supporting

  1195. charity,

  1196. like, you

  1197. know, maybe

  1198. I'll do a

  1199. little bit

  1200. of it because

  1201. I still, you

  1202. know, get a

  1203. bit of a

  1204. kick, but I

  1205. don't have

  1206. to do that.

  1207. I can, you

  1208. know, keep

  1209. it for

  1210. myself, spend

  1211. on something,

  1212. maybe give

  1213. it to family,

  1214. I guess, which

  1215. is not in

  1216. and of itself

  1217. a bad

  1218. thing.

  1219. I don't

  1220. have to worry

  1221. what I say.

  1222. I don't have

  1223. the pressure

  1224. of living this

  1225. good Christian

  1226. life.

  1227. Very

  1228. attractive,

  1229. isn't it?

  1230. I'm going to

  1231. be selfish

  1232. with my

  1233. time.

  1234. I don't

  1235. have to

  1236. feel guilty

  1237. about the

  1238. fact I'm

  1239. being selfish

  1240. with my

  1241. time.

  1242. It's what I

  1243. want to do,

  1244. living my

  1245. best life.

  1246. Sometimes we

  1247. wish we could

  1248. throw off those

  1249. responsibilities,

  1250. I think.

  1251. But we have

  1252. to remember

  1253. who we

  1254. represent.

  1255. We represent

  1256. Jesus.

  1257. I think that

  1258. type of thinking

  1259. happens when we

  1260. lose sight of who

  1261. we represent.

  1262. We forget what

  1263. he has done

  1264. for us.

  1265. We forget

  1266. that we

  1267. represent a

  1268. king who

  1269. at all times

  1270. in every

  1271. circumstance

  1272. wants what's

  1273. best for us.

  1274. We forget

  1275. that we

  1276. represent the

  1277. king of the

  1278. universe.

  1279. It's an

  1280. illusion that it

  1281. will be a

  1282. better life.

  1283. death.

  1284. Remember the

  1285. destiny, if you

  1286. do not have

  1287. Jesus, is

  1288. death.

  1289. And there

  1290. are some

  1291. here, I

  1292. think, who

  1293. probably do

  1294. suffer persecution

  1295. for being an

  1296. ambassador for

  1297. Jesus.

  1298. Some people

  1299. probably, I

  1300. imagine, up

  1301. until this

  1302. point have

  1303. been thinking,

  1304. this doesn't

  1305. really connect

  1306. with me.

  1307. for some

  1308. of you, the

  1309. struggle of

  1310. running

  1311. countercultural

  1312. is real.

  1313. And I

  1314. think Luke

  1315. offers a

  1316. great and

  1317. satisfying

  1318. comfort here.

  1319. When we're

  1320. tempted to

  1321. give up, when

  1322. we're sick of

  1323. being made to

  1324. feel like an

  1325. idiot, when

  1326. we're sick of

  1327. losing friendships,

  1328. family relationships,

  1329. or maybe the

  1330. relationships don't

  1331. even get off the

  1332. ground because of

  1333. the way that we

  1334. live our life.

  1335. I think Luke

  1336. offers us

  1337. comfort here in

  1338. saying, remember

  1339. who it is that

  1340. you represent.

  1341. Remember who

  1342. you are an

  1343. ambassador for.

  1344. You are an

  1345. ambassador for

  1346. Jesus, who

  1347. died on the

  1348. cross, who

  1349. was persecuted

  1350. for you, who

  1351. had his perfect

  1352. relationship with

  1353. his father torn

  1354. apart for God's

  1355. glory and as a

  1356. consequence saving

  1357. us from certain

  1358. death.

  1359. We represent a

  1360. king who walked

  1361. the walk.

  1362. He went

  1363. before us.

  1364. See, the

  1365. people we saw

  1366. at the start on

  1367. those slides,

  1368. those ambassadors,

  1369. they represent

  1370. people who will

  1371. in 30 years

  1372. probably not even

  1373. be on the face

  1374. of the planet.

  1375. They're failing,

  1376. they say stupid

  1377. things, they make

  1378. wrong decisions,

  1379. they change their

  1380. mind all the time.

  1381. they're ambassadors

  1382. for someone who

  1383. really, you know,

  1384. they'll be gone.

  1385. But as

  1386. Christians, we

  1387. are ambassadors

  1388. for the eternal

  1389. king, a king

  1390. who will never,

  1391. ever make the

  1392. wrong decision,

  1393. who always wants

  1394. what's best for

  1395. us.

  1396. We are his

  1397. ambassadors.

  1398. Remember who you

  1399. represent?

  1400. I'm going to

  1401. pray.

  1402. Dear God,

  1403. thank you so

  1404. much that you

  1405. sent your son

  1406. Jesus to this

  1407. world, that he

  1408. died and rose

  1409. again for us to

  1410. take our

  1411. consequence, to

  1412. take our

  1413. punishment.

  1414. God, I just

  1415. pray that we

  1416. would recognize

  1417. recognize that

  1418. we are salt

  1419. and we are

  1420. light, that

  1421. is who we

  1422. are, regardless

  1423. of how well we

  1424. might live it

  1425. day to day, that

  1426. is the status

  1427. that you have

  1428. called us to.

  1429. God, I pray

  1430. that in our

  1431. everyday life, we

  1432. would remember

  1433. that you, Jesus,

  1434. are who we

  1435. represent.

  1436. You are the

  1437. one that we

  1438. make our lives

  1439. known to those

  1440. around us for.

  1441. I pray that we

  1442. wouldn't take this

  1443. as a moralistic

  1444. challenge.

  1445. I pray that we

  1446. would remember

  1447. that ultimately

  1448. all of this is

  1449. for your glory.

  1450. All of this is

  1451. for your name.

  1452. And we are

  1453. people who are

  1454. here to represent

  1455. you.

  1456. Amen.
