  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. Our Bible reading this morning is from Matthew 5, verses 33 to 48.

    Matthew 5:33–48

  3. We're going to be picking up Jesus' Sermon on the Mount partway through, starting from

  4. verse 33.

  5. Again, you have heard that it was said to those of old,

  6. you shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.

  7. But I say to you, do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,

  8. or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great

  9. king.

  10. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.

  11. Let what you say be simply yes or no.

  12. Anything more than this comes from evil.

  13. You have heard that it was said, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

  14. But I say to you, do not resist the one who is evil.

  15. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.

  16. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.

  17. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.

  18. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

  19. You have heard that it was said, you shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.

  20. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

  21. so that you may be sons of your father who is in heaven.

  22. For he makes his son rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

  23. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have?

  24. Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

  25. And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others?

  26. Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

  27. You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly father is perfect.

  28. Heavenly father, you have given us so many good examples through your son of what it is to live as people of your kingdom,

  29. as imitators of who you are and what you want for us.

  30. I pray that as I go through the word today, that you will open our hearts and guide my words,

  31. that my words can be your words and speak into our hearts for what you want for us.

  32. In Jesus' name, amen.

  33. Well, why is it that we are constantly measuring ourselves against the people around us?

  34. How we define ourselves creates a lens that we use to define our worth.

  35. If I define myself by my work, I constantly have to check how good I am at my job by measuring against other people doing the same thing.

  36. If I define myself by my sporting ability, I need to know who I am beating to know just how good I am.

  37. Now, we're in the midst of the Olympic Games.

  38. Athletes have been training for years, decades even, to get to this point.

  39. And for some of them, all that hard work, all those dreams are smashed in an instant.

  40. Imagine you're an Australian swimmer on the Olympic team.

  41. You've worked your butt off for most of your life.

  42. 4am starts, six days a week, from your early teenage years.

  43. Perhaps moving your family halfway across the country to have a better coach.

  44. You have made it to the Olympics.

  45. You have qualified.

  46. Now, by this definition, you're one of the top two athletes in this country for your event.

  47. Top two.

  48. It's a pretty high standard.

  49. Now, you get to the Olympics and you swim in your heat.

  50. But you don't qualify for the semifinal.

  51. That's it.

  52. All that time and effort you have invested, done.

  53. In only a matter of seconds, your dream is finished.

  54. But it doesn't just end there.

  55. As an Australian swimmer, the standard of qualifying has been upgraded to winning.

  56. You know that you've not met the standard that you set for yourself.

  57. No matter what standard you achieve, the world will always have a higher standard.

  58. You are one of the top two athletes in your country for your event.

  59. You're an Olympian.

  60. But that is no longer enough.

  61. So if we need to constantly meet a standard in order for our sense of who we are and our worth to be recognised,

  62. then failing would be personally devastating.

  63. But as people, we're not that bad, are we?

  64. I mean, we're not able to compete in an Olympic event.

  65. That's a very small portion of the population.

  66. But that doesn't mean that the world has not set a standard for us.

  67. Now, the world is divided into two general categories.

  68. Good and bad.

  69. Now, while these seem like absolute terms, we can find that they're actually a sliding scale.

  70. When we try to understand what the right thing to be doing in any situation is,

  71. where do we look for reference?

  72. We gauge what the accepted behaviour is by seeing what the majority of the people around us are doing.

  73. Do we speed down the highway?

  74. Do we use our phones while driving?

  75. We look to the world to define what acceptable behaviour is

  76. and what level of performance defines a good person.

  77. Now, to the world, the laws that Jesus talks about here in verses 33 to 48

  78. are not usually considered bad.

  79. Lying? Who doesn't lie?

  80. Justice? Justice should be done.

  81. Make them pay for what they've done.

  82. And no one will think less of you for wishing ill on your enemy.

  83. We're not murderers. We're not thieves.

  84. We're not bad by the world's standards.

  85. In fact, we're quite good.

  86. We give to charity.

  87. We look after people who need help.

  88. We only slightly resent those who need something from us

  89. when we're just not quite ready to give.

  90. We pay our taxes.

  91. We obey the road rules, mostly,

  92. except there's no one around and no one's going to get hurt.

  93. We work hard all week

  94. and then give up the rest that we deserve to come to church

  95. because we are good people.

  96. As Jerry Bridges states in his book, Respectable Sins,

  97. we who are believers tend to evaluate our character

  98. and conduct relative to the moral culture in which we live.

  99. Since we usually live at a higher moral standard than society at large,

  100. it is easy for us to feel good about ourselves

  101. and to assume that God feels that way also.

  102. Now, to Jesus' audience here in Matthew,

  103. the Pharisees and scribes were the good standard of their time.

  104. No one was closer to God than them.

  105. They were the best of the best

  106. when it came to being good people.

  107. They were known for their obedience to the law.

  108. They gave to the need.

  109. And they usually made sure that everyone knew

  110. just how godly they were.

  111. Jesus gives us some examples in Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  112. They were such a high standard

  113. that in verse 20,

  114. Jesus uses them as the example

  115. that must be surpassed to enter heaven.

  116. Now, to compare that to the analogy of swimming,

  117. Jesus has just said the equivalent of

  118. you must be a better swimmer than Ian Thorpe

  119. or Ariana Titmuss

  120. or Susie O'Neill

  121. or Dawn Fraser

  122. or Kieran Perkins

  123. or Murray Rose.

  124. Now, I'm pretty sure that I've given a good swimmer

  125. from every generation we've got here at church.

  126. To beat these people

  127. who are defined as the best swimmers of their time

  128. would make us good at swimming.

  129. But we don't sit here

  130. and think that being a better swimmer than these people

  131. is an easy task.

  132. Now, can anyone honestly say

  133. that we can be more righteous

  134. than the scribes and Pharisees?

  135. Can we meet that standard?

  136. But that's what Jesus is asking us to do

  137. so that we can enter the kingdom of heaven.

  138. So to the world,

  139. we're not bad people.

  140. But how good are we?

  141. Well, that depends on whether we're defined by God,

  142. not others and ourselves.

  143. So measuring ourselves

  144. against the example of the laws

  145. that Jesus leads us through in Matthew 5

  146. shows us how good we really are.

  147. Look with me at verses 33 to 37 on oaths.

  148. Now, we can summarize these verses by

  149. do not take an oath and all.

  150. Let what you say simply yes or no.

  151. Now, have you ever made a promise backed up with,

  152. you better believe I will,

  153. or even cross my heart and hope to die?

  154. Now, to Jesus' listeners,

  155. the only time they had to be believed

  156. was when they were making such a promise.

  157. When our truthfulness is questioned,

  158. we fall short of God's standard.

  159. Do we speak truthfully?

  160. Do we live with integrity?

  161. If we live our lives

  162. so that our yes and no are believed,

  163. what fine examples we would be

  164. of the kingdom of heaven?

  165. If we are to proclaim the gospel

  166. to the people we meet,

  167. do we steal something from the words

  168. if we have a reputation for lying?

  169. If we are known for honesty and truthfulness,

  170. there can be no doubt

  171. that the gospel is truth

  172. when we speak it.

  173. Moving on to verses 38 to 42,

  174. these confront us with a different perspective

  175. on our sense of justice, of fairness.

  176. Now, we extend through to chapter 7, verse 12,

  177. the command of do to others

  178. as you would have them do to you.

  179. Do we take that command

  180. as the opportunity to treat other people

  181. the way they treated us

  182. instead of turning the other cheek

  183. and ending the issue?

  184. Instead of treating the people,

  185. instead of treating people

  186. the way we want to be treated,

  187. we demand something back.

  188. Now, this makes me think about my driving.

  189. I consider myself to be a good driver

  190. for the most part.

  191. I bring my focus and my attention to the road

  192. and the other people

  193. who share the road with us.

  194. Now, I have had accidents,

  195. but I can justify riding off two cars

  196. because they weren't my fault.

  197. There was a mechanical failure on one

  198. and the road was wet

  199. and I was not even in second gear in another.

  200. But there are times,

  201. and here I take a page

  202. from Rob Patterson's sermons,

  203. where my driving stresses out

  204. my beautiful wife.

  205. There are times

  206. when another road user

  207. does not treat me

  208. the way that I wish to be treated on the road

  209. and the way that I feel

  210. that I am treating them.

  211. Instead of continuing on,

  212. I find myself thinking,

  213. if that's how you want it to be,

  214. so be it.

  215. I no longer treat them

  216. the way I wish to be treated,

  217. but treat them the way

  218. they've just treated me.

  219. Someone swings into my lane

  220. and a little bit

  221. and I drive right to the edge

  222. to make sure that they know

  223. that this is my space.

  224. Someone doesn't indicate

  225. that they're turning in front of me

  226. and I just keep going

  227. as if they're not,

  228. getting closer and closer.

  229. All the while,

  230. Jess is sitting next to me

  231. wondering if this is the moment we crash.

  232. You see,

  233. when we demand justice

  234. or fairness,

  235. what is it that we really want?

  236. Is it according to the law

  237. that someone is punished

  238. to the exact measure

  239. of their hurt that they've caused?

  240. Literally,

  241. an eye for an eye?

  242. Or is it that we want the world

  243. to recognise

  244. and acknowledge that

  245. I was somehow wrong?

  246. Our retaliation,

  247. our demand for justice

  248. appears to be a righteous act.

  249. The wrongdoer should be made

  250. to pay for what they've done.

  251. But the root of that demand

  252. is our own recognition,

  253. elevation,

  254. being the focus of events.

  255. We crave the glory for ourselves.

  256. We want to be in the place

  257. that God has set aside for himself.

  258. We want to be in the place

  259. of God.

  260. We want to be in the place

  261. of God.

  262. We want to be in the place

  263. of God.

  264. Moving on,

  265. verse 44 calls us

  266. to pray for those

  267. who persecute you.

  268. Now,

  269. can we honestly say

  270. that we pray for our enemies?

  271. Even preparing this sermon,

  272. I'm typing out automatically

  273. P-R-E-Y,

  274. not P-R-A-Y.

  275. Now,

  276. praying on our enemies

  277. seems like a natural thing to do.

  278. We don't know

  279. what they're up to.

  280. They'll get the jump on us

  281. and they'll hurt us

  282. and defeat us.

  283. We end up

  284. with the inevitable

  285. pre-emptive strike.

  286. So we retaliate so well

  287. that we get in there

  288. before they can do us harm.

  289. But praying for our enemies,

  290. not for their destruction,

  291. but for their good,

  292. can we take this huge leap forward?

  293. It is easy to let our friends

  294. get away with an injustice,

  295. maybe even a family member,

  296. although it seems that

  297. friends can get away

  298. with a lot more than family,

  299. doesn't it?

  300. But someone who's actively

  301. seeking my pain,

  302. my downfall,

  303. Jesus wants me to do what?

  304. Jesus shows us

  305. that the world's definition of good

  306. is vastly different to God's

  307. and that our hearts

  308. are not in line

  309. with God's heart.

  310. We cannot live up

  311. to his standard.

  312. We need

  313. a totally new heart.

  314. Adam and Israel

  315. were unfaithful sons of God.

  316. They were not able

  317. to be obedient,

  318. not achieving the example

  319. God has made them to be.

  320. Now, Adam had one simple rule.

  321. Don't eat from that tree

  322. and he couldn't obey it.

  323. When Israel had

  324. all the rules,

  325. the physical signs,

  326. the explicit instructions

  327. on how to live

  328. as obedient sons of God,

  329. they had the living God

  330. bringing them up

  331. out of slavery in Egypt,

  332. going before them

  333. in a pillar of smoke and fire.

  334. Exodus 19

  335. gives us the scene

  336. at Mount Sinai

  337. where God

  338. is sitting on the top

  339. of the mountain

  340. in a cloud of fire

  341. in front of them.

  342. Israel's response?

  343. Build us a statue

  344. of our God

  345. so that we know

  346. who our God is.

  347. Even with God

  348. right in front of them,

  349. they are unable

  350. to be the obedient

  351. sons they are called to be.

  352. And like Adam and Israel,

  353. we are unable

  354. to be the obedient children

  355. that we are called to be.

  356. but we have an example

  357. of someone who is.

  358. We don't need to look

  359. any further than Jesus

  360. for the example

  361. of living

  362. as a kingdom son.

  363. Jesus did not need

  364. oaths to back up

  365. his statements of truth.

  366. In Matthew chapter 27,

    Matthew 27 chapter mention

  367. when Jesus is questioned

  368. by Pilate,

  369. he did not respond

  370. with many words

  371. and grand statements

  372. to convince people

  373. of his answers.

  374. He speaks a simple sentence.

  375. You have said

  376. that it is so.

  377. Even at the point

  378. where he is about to die,

  379. when we would think

  380. that there is nothing

  381. left to lose,

  382. Jesus' simple statement

  383. of the truth

  384. greatly amazed Pilate.

  385. Earlier in that night,

  386. Jesus shows his disciples

  387. that retaliation

  388. is not the answer.

  389. In chapter 26,

  390. when Judas betrays Jesus

  391. in the Garden of Gethsemane,

  392. one of the disciples

  393. defends Jesus

  394. with the sword,

  395. cutting off the ear

  396. of the temple servant.

  397. Jesus rebukes his disciples,

  398. tells him to put away

  399. his weapon,

  400. heals the temple servant

  401. and provides calm

  402. in the midst

  403. of two groups

  404. of armed men

  405. ready to go to war.

  406. Jesus leaves calm

  407. and turns the other chair.

  408. And who can provide us

  409. with a better example

  410. of loving and praying

  411. for our enemies?

  412. The obvious act

  413. of a sinless man

  414. dying for sinful creation.

  415. While hanging on the cross,

  416. listening to the criminals

  417. in the crowds,

  418. mocking and demanding

  419. that he proved his power,

  420. Jesus prays,

  421. Father,

  422. forgive them.

  423. In the midst

  424. of his greatest suffering,

  425. Christ prays not

  426. for his own relief,

  427. but for forgiveness

  428. for those

  429. who are caught up

  430. in this act.

  431. Now,

  432. to me,

  433. the clearest example

  434. of Jesus' obedience

  435. is in the Garden of Gethsemane.

  436. Matthew 26,

    Matthew 26:39

  437. verse 39,

  438. Jesus prays,

  439. My Father,

  440. if it be possible,

  441. let this cup pass from me,

  442. but nevertheless,

  443. not as I will,

  444. but as you will.

  445. in full knowledge

  446. of what was about

  447. to occur

  448. and all the pain

  449. that was associated

  450. with what was coming,

  451. Jesus begs

  452. for there to be

  453. another way,

  454. yet concludes

  455. God's way is best.

  456. You see,

  457. Jesus is the only

  458. faithful son,

  459. the only one

  460. who can live up

  461. to the command

  462. of verse 48,

  463. you therefore

  464. must be perfect

  465. as your heavenly

  466. Father is perfect.

  467. In this command,

  468. Jesus commands

  469. his followers,

  470. us,

  471. to be perfect,

  472. to reorient

  473. our hearts

  474. from the world's

  475. standards,

  476. to be in line

  477. with God's standards.

  478. But how do we

  479. take part in that?

  480. How does Christ's

  481. perfection

  482. become ours?

  483. Because our Father

  484. calls us

  485. to share

  486. in his Son's heart.

  487. God loves

  488. all of his

  489. creation

  490. and that love

  491. is concentrated

  492. in his Son.

  493. And through

  494. his Son,

  495. we too

  496. can call God

  497. our Heavenly

  498. Father.

  499. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8:14–17

  500. verses 14 to 17

  501. tells us that

  502. we are given

  503. the spirit

  504. of adoption

  505. by whom

  506. we cry

  507. Father.

  508. Now,

  509. as Beth alluded to,

  510. consider the enormity

  511. of having a direct

  512. personal

  513. family relationship

  514. relationship with God,

  515. the creator

  516. of everything.

  517. The relationship

  518. between a parent

  519. and a child

  520. is particularly

  521. intimate.

  522. The parent

  523. loves and cares

  524. for the child,

  525. providing all

  526. that they need

  527. and more,

  528. regardless of

  529. the child's

  530. behavior.

  531. No matter how

  532. much a child

  533. rebels against

  534. the parent,

  535. the parent will

  536. always have a place

  537. ready for them.

  538. Think of the story

  539. of the prodigal

  540. son.

  541. A man tells

  542. his father

  543. that he can't

  544. wait for him

  545. to be dead,

  546. so the father

  547. gives him his

  548. inheritance

  549. and his blessing.

  550. The son

  551. squanders

  552. everything

  553. and at the

  554. lowest point

  555. of his life

  556. remembers the

  557. love his father

  558. shows for his

  559. servants.

  560. The son

  561. does not expect

  562. anything more

  563. than that

  564. of the hired

  565. hands,

  566. but a father's

  567. love overcomes

  568. all the rebellion

  569. that has been

  570. thrown his way

  571. by the son

  572. to run,

  573. embrace,

  574. and welcome

  575. home his

  576. child.

  577. Children are

  578. completely

  579. dependent on

  580. their parents,

  581. but only for

  582. so long.

  583. As a child

  584. grows,

  585. they become

  586. less physically

  587. dependent.

  588. They can feed

  589. themselves,

  590. dress themselves,

  591. and eventually

  592. even get

  593. themselves where

  594. they need to

  595. and want to

  596. go.

  597. But as this

  598. physical dependency

  599. wanes,

  600. they grow in

  601. emotional

  602. dependency.

  603. Even when we

  604. become parents,

  605. we seek the

  606. affirmation of

  607. our parents

  608. that we're

  609. doing a good

  610. job.

  611. As children,

  612. we imitate

  613. our parents

  614. to learn about

  615. the world

  616. from their

  617. eyes.

  618. And so

  619. that's what

  620. God wants.

  621. He wants us

  622. to imitate

  623. him.

  624. He wants us

  625. to turn to

  626. him for

  627. affirmation of

  628. what we're

  629. doing is

  630. right.

  631. He wants

  632. to provide

  633. for us,

  634. to look

  635. after us,

  636. Mark chapter

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  637. 10 tells

  638. us that

  639. he wants

  640. us to

  641. be fully

  642. dependent

  643. on him.

  644. Doesn't

  645. that give

  646. us hope?

  647. That the

  648. unchanging

  649. standard of

  650. perfection is

  651. measured against

  652. our creator

  653. who wants

  654. to care for

  655. us,

  656. who calls

  657. us to an

  658. intimate

  659. personal family

  660. relationship with

  661. him,

  662. and who lifts

  663. us up to

  664. that standard

  665. with his

  666. call.

  667. God.

  668. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  669. chapter 1

  670. reminds us

  671. that we

  672. are called

  673. to be

  674. holy because

  675. God is

  676. holy.

  677. We are

  678. reminded that

  679. as children

  680. of the

  681. kingdom of

  682. heaven,

  683. we are

  684. showing the

  685. world what

  686. it means to

  687. be part of

  688. that kingdom.

  689. Not the

  690. good people,

  691. only the

  692. same.

  693. And Peter

  694. goes on.

  695. If we

  696. call him

  697. father,

  698. conduct

  699. yourselves

  700. knowing that

  701. you were

  702. ransomed from

  703. the futile

  704. ways of

  705. your forefathers

  706. with the

  707. blood of

  708. Christ.

  709. Jesus'

  710. blood shed

  711. for us

  712. is our

  713. sacrifice.

  714. The price

  715. that is

  716. required for

  717. our sin

  718. before God

  719. has been

  720. paid.

  721. We can

  722. now be

  723. seen as

  724. without sin

  725. and can

  726. enter the

  727. kingdom of

  728. heaven.

  729. In

  730. chapter

  731. 31,

  732. verses

  733. 31 to

  734. 34,

  735. God

  736. promised

  737. that a

  738. new

  739. covenant

  740. will be

  741. written in

  742. our hearts.

  743. Christ

  744. came to

  745. fulfill the

  746. law that

  747. God might

  748. write him

  749. into our

  750. hearts,

  751. sealing us

  752. to him

  753. and remembering

  754. our iniquity

  755. no more.

  756. God deals

  757. with our

  758. corrupted

  759. heart by

  760. writing

  761. himself in.

  762. God

  763. changes the

  764. story.

  765. In

  766. Ezekiel

  767. 36,

  768. God

  769. promises to

  770. give us

  771. a new

  772. heart and

  773. a new

  774. spirit.

  775. With a

  776. new

  777. heart,

  778. we are

  779. children of

  780. the kingdom

  781. of heaven.

  782. We are

  783. now aliens

  784. here on

  785. earth.

  786. And as

  787. Matt

  788. described a

  789. couple of

  790. weeks ago,

  791. we should

  792. now live

  793. as imitators

  794. of our

  795. king,

  796. not conforming

  797. to the

  798. culture of

  799. this world.

  800. God

  801. will

  802. repent.

  803. When we

  804. repent,

  805. and if we

  806. go back

  807. right to the

  808. start of the

  809. sermon on

  810. the mount,

  811. Jesus starts

  812. his call

  813. with repent

  814. for the

  815. kingdom of

  816. heaven is

  817. at hand.

  818. When we

  819. repent,

  820. it is the

  821. changing of

  822. our heart's

  823. orientation.

  824. As Dave

  825. Bott showed

  826. us a couple

  827. of weeks

  828. back,

  829. we need to

  830. empty

  831. ourselves of

  832. the things

  833. of this

  834. world so

  835. that we

  836. can be

  837. filled with

  838. Christ.

  839. We need

  840. to empty

  841. ourselves of

  842. what defines

  843. us by

  844. this world

  845. and be

  846. filled with

  847. the goodness

  848. and identity

  849. that Christ

  850. offers us.

  851. When the

  852. world pushes

  853. back against

  854. us because

  855. we don't

  856. belong here

  857. anymore,

  858. we know

  859. that it is

  860. because we

  861. belong in

  862. our heavenly

  863. father's

  864. kingdom.

  865. We are

  866. made perfect

  867. because Christ

  868. is perfect.

  869. But what

  870. does that

  871. mean for

  872. us?

  873. We know

  874. that the

  875. world's

  876. standards will

  877. always change.

  878. There's

  879. always a

  880. higher

  881. standard.

  882. But God's

  883. standard is

  884. forever the

  885. same.

  886. We are

  887. so willing

  888. to spend

  889. all our

  890. energy chasing

  891. after the

  892. constantly moving

  893. standards of

  894. this world.

  895. So why do

  896. we stumble

  897. when we are

  898. called to

  899. live out

  900. the perfection

  901. that has

  902. already been

  903. given to

  904. us?

  905. Now we

  906. know to

  907. note,

  908. the call

  909. to perfection

  910. is not

  911. saying that

  912. we can

  913. earn our

  914. way into

  915. heaven.

  916. Matthew

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  917. chapter 7

  918. tells us

  919. that many

  920. people are

  921. working out

  922. their lives

  923. in Jesus

  924. name,

  925. attempting to

  926. gain entry

  927. to heaven

  928. through their

  929. personal

  930. righteousness,

  931. their attempt

  932. to achieve

  933. perfection

  934. under the

  935. law.

  936. But Christ's

  937. response to

  938. them is,

  939. I never

  940. knew.

  941. We cannot

  942. demand access

  943. to God on

  944. our terms.

  945. this command

  946. to Jesus

  947. followers is

  948. also not

  949. a call to

  950. strive for

  951. perfect

  952. law

  953. keeping.

  954. In the

  955. context of

  956. the verses

  957. we've just

  958. gone through,

  959. it should be

  960. clear that

  961. this is not

  962. possible.

  963. Rather,

  964. Jesus is

  965. setting that

  966. standard for

  967. his people

  968. to pursue

  969. and being

  970. the example

  971. who can

  972. and will

  973. help his

  974. people achieve

  975. it.

  976. in the

  977. examples of

  978. retaliation

  979. and loving

  980. your enemies,

  981. Jesus

  982. exhorts us

  983. as his

  984. people,

  985. not only

  986. to reject

  987. the normal

  988. standards of

  989. this world,

  990. but to

  991. double down,

  992. turn the

  993. other cheek,

  994. give your

  995. cloak also,

  996. love your

  997. enemies,

  998. but go the

  999. extra mile and

  1000. pray for their

  1001. benefit too.

  1002. When anyone

  1003. can love their

  1004. friends,

  1005. that's why

  1006. they're friends.

  1007. anyone can

  1008. give to

  1009. someone who

  1010. we know

  1011. can pay

  1012. us back,

  1013. but we

  1014. are called

  1015. to be

  1016. different,

  1017. so that

  1018. instead of

  1019. giving in

  1020. to our

  1021. nature for

  1022. revenge and

  1023. self-glory,

  1024. we end

  1025. the violence.

  1026. And after

  1027. we've ended

  1028. the violence,

  1029. we pray and

  1030. give of

  1031. ourselves for

  1032. the other

  1033. person's

  1034. well-being.

  1035. If we

  1036. allow ourselves

  1037. to suffer

  1038. without seeking

  1039. retribution,

  1040. who are we

  1041. seeking glory

  1042. for?

  1043. Aren't we

  1044. showing that

  1045. we no longer

  1046. live by the

  1047. standards of

  1048. this world

  1049. and live for

  1050. something greater,

  1051. higher?

  1052. Following that,

  1053. we see that

  1054. our language,

  1055. our honesty and

  1056. integrity,

  1057. should likewise

  1058. signify us

  1059. as different to

  1060. this world.

  1061. We should be

  1062. known for our

  1063. honesty, our

  1064. truthfulness,

  1065. our integrity.

  1066. When we answer

  1067. a question, we

  1068. shouldn't have to

  1069. make assurances.

  1070. we shouldn't

  1071. have to cross

  1072. our heart and

  1073. hope to die

  1074. that we speak

  1075. the truth.

  1076. The people we

  1077. speak to should

  1078. know that we

  1079. speak truth

  1080. because that's

  1081. what we're

  1082. known for.

  1083. Truth and

  1084. honesty are

  1085. linked with

  1086. our character,

  1087. the fibre of

  1088. who we are

  1089. as citizens of

  1090. the kingdom

  1091. of heaven,

  1092. as sons and

  1093. daughters of

  1094. our heavenly

  1095. Father.

  1096. God,

  1097. live as

  1098. children of

  1099. the kingdom

  1100. of heaven

  1101. and be

  1102. holy because

  1103. your God and

  1104. king is

  1105. holy.

  1106. Pray with me.

  1107. gracious

  1108. Father,

  1109. help us to

  1110. put aside

  1111. the things

  1112. of this

  1113. world.

  1114. Help us

  1115. to stop

  1116. seeking

  1117. the world

  1118. standard and

  1119. work towards

  1120. your standard.

  1121. Help us to

  1122. open our hearts

  1123. to you and be

  1124. filled with who

  1125. you are,

  1126. that it

  1127. overflows in

  1128. this world,

  1129. that we can

  1130. show the world

  1131. your love

  1132. flowing through

  1133. us.

  1134. Help us to

  1135. live the way

  1136. you want us

  1137. to live,

  1138. imitating you

  1139. in all that

  1140. we do.

  1141. In Jesus'

  1142. name,

  1143. Amen.
