  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. Please turn with me to Matthew chapter 10.

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  3. We're going to read from verses 16 through to 33.

  4. Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and

  5. innocent as doves.

  6. Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to the courts and flog you in their synagogues,

  7. and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before

  8. them and the Gentiles.

  9. When they deliver you over, do not be anxious about how you are to speak or what you are

  10. to say, for you are to say what will be given to you, given to you in that hour.

  11. For it is not you who speak, but the spirit of your father speaking through you.

  12. Brother will deliver brother over to death, and father his child, and children will rise

  13. against parents and have them put to death, and you will be hated by all for my name's

  14. sake.

  15. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

  16. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly I say to you, you will

  17. not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

  18. A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.

  19. It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master.

  20. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those

  21. of his household?

  22. So have no fear for them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will

  23. not be known.

  24. What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.

  25. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.

  26. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

  27. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?

  28. And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your father.

  29. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.

  30. Fear not, therefore, you are of more value than many sparrows.

  31. So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who

  32. is in heaven.

  33. But whoever denies me before men, I will also deny before my Father who is in heaven.

  34. Most, I think, will be familiar with the idea of a cost-benefit analysis.

  35. It's used very commonly in business.

  36. And it's a really helpful process when it's done well.

  37. And it's used to evaluate a particular decision.

  38. And cost-benefit, just as it sounds, you add up all the costs and you put that against the

  39. benefits.

  40. And that's your analysis.

  41. That helps you see the value of a decision.

  42. Now, I introduce that because as we move into this topic this morning, I think typically

  43. we see cost as loss.

  44. So we say something that's really costly.

  45. We sort of feel as if, whoa, there was a considerable loss involved in that.

  46. But that's not always the case.

  47. So, for example, I decide to buy a particular product and I research and I find it.

  48. I find one in a shop and it's $100.

  49. And I think, whoa, that's a fair bit of money.

  50. But then, over the next couple of days, I discover there's actually a very similar product,

  51. an identical product, but it's a better quality.

  52. But the price tag's $200.

  53. Now, I pay twice as much money.

  54. It costs me twice as much.

  55. But I get the more expensive product.

  56. Because the benefit outweighs the extra cost.

  57. So, what I want to set up this morning as we move into these verses is to ask the question,

  58. what would a cost-benefit analysis, what would your cost-benefit analysis suggest

  59. in the matter of getting involved in the work of mission or harvesting

  60. or proclaiming the gospel of Jesus,

  61. which is at the heart of this section we're working through at the minute

  62. from chapter 9, verse 35 to the end of chapter 10 of Matthew's gospel.

  63. What would your cost-benefit analysis look like?

  64. What would it suggest to you in terms of,

  65. will I get involved in this harvest work?

  66. Will I get involved in mission proclaiming the work of Jesus?

  67. Or is it too costly?

  68. Jesus describes his mission as harvesting.

  69. We saw that last week.

  70. And as well as describing it as harvesting,

  71. he invites, not just invites,

  72. but he expects his disciples

  73. to share in this exciting but challenging work.

  74. And it's work we saw last week that's actually guaranteed by him.

  75. He's the Lord of the harvest.

  76. So the harvest is hard work,

  77. but the outcome is guaranteed.

  78. But here's the question as we move into verse 16.

  79. Could anybody remain excited

  80. about this work of mission,

  81. this work of harvest,

  82. when we read these verses?

  83. They're not easy to sugarcoat, are they?

  84. If you just start with that picture in verse 16,

  85. sheep in the midst of wolves.

  86. Well, coming off a farm,

  87. I've seen firsthand what a pack of wild dogs does in a flock of sheep.

  88. And it's gruesome.

  89. That's the picture.

  90. They isolate one sheep after another,

  91. and they work together.

  92. And literally, they rip that sheep to pieces.

  93. And in case you think, well, maybe they're hungry.

  94. They're not.

  95. When they're doing that,

  96. it's for the sheer joy of killing,

  97. when they get in that pack mentality.

  98. That's the picture.

  99. And then against that,

  100. Jesus keeps on saying,

  101. do not fear.

  102. Do not fear.

  103. Do not be anxious.

  104. Do not fear.

  105. Now,

  106. another question arises.

  107. There's lots of questions.

  108. Hopefully, I'll be able to give you some answers this morning.

  109. Why would Jesus use such a terrifying image,

  110. followed by several equally confronting scenarios,

  111. if he wants to encourage his followers to get involved in this work of mission?

  112. It doesn't seem like the way to go, does it?

  113. I went to a cross-cultural mission seminar thing.

  114. It was setting out all the different people came and set up their stalls.

  115. And I was really saddened but intrigued by how many images of beautiful landscapes and smiling children.

  116. It was almost as if the appeal was,

  117. come and work on the mission field,

  118. and you'll see some beautiful places,

  119. and you'll meet some lovely people.

  120. I didn't see any stalls who had this picture of wild dogs attacking sheep.

  121. You just wouldn't use it for advertising, would you?

  122. And yet, Jesus did.

  123. So, what's the go?

  124. Well, I think Jesus is presenting a cost-benefit analysis,

  125. for want of another picture to help you see it.

  126. So, he's not trying to sugarcoat that which can't be sugarcoated.

  127. The costs are real.

  128. But the benefits make it a no-brainer.

  129. So, what at first glance looks totally negative, totally repulsive,

  130. is actually, I think, a perspective which allows courage, confidence, and opportunity

  131. to triumph over fear and a sense of inability

  132. when it comes to thinking about our engagement in the work of mission,

  133. the work of harvesting,

  134. as Jesus describes it.

  135. Now, stepping back from the passage for a minute,

  136. looking historically,

  137. clearly this worked for the disciples.

  138. Because the reality is that all the disciples,

  139. with the exception of Judas,

  140. mentioned in the beginning of chapter 10 here,

  141. all of those disciples spent a lifetime,

  142. as far as we know,

  143. spent a lifetime on the mission field,

  144. wandering around Asia Minor and various other countries,

  145. speaking the good news of Jesus.

  146. Most of them,

  147. and the evidence here is a little bit more iffy,

  148. but it seems like,

  149. on reasonable balance,

  150. most of them,

  151. either died under arrest,

  152. or were killed,

  153. in the line of duty, as it were.

  154. So, with that,

  155. let's jump into the text

  156. and dig into the details a little bit more.

  157. But I'm going to jump in in two stages.

  158. I want a big perspective in the text,

  159. and then we're going to look at some of the detailed scenarios.

  160. Hopefully that will help.

  161. The first heading I want to use,

  162. is that the Lord of the Harvest briefs his harvest workers.

  163. Now, if you know anything about Special Forces troops,

  164. and I know little,

  165. but my son did a commando training course a few years ago,

  166. and they spend weeks and weeks and weeks

  167. preparing for any given mission.

  168. Why?

  169. Because the success of the mission

  170. is largely determined by the quality of the preparation.

  171. Each soldier in the unit

  172. or the section,

  173. typically 10 or 12 in a commando section.

  174. Each soldier must have

  175. total confidence in their commander.

  176. Total confidence.

  177. Each soldier must know

  178. each part of the operation

  179. so that any one of them,

  180. in the event of a casualty,

  181. can step in and do any particular task

  182. on that particular mission.

  183. They need to know the lay of the land.

  184. They need to have confidence in their weaponry.

  185. They need to know the strength of the enemy.

  186. They need to know the point

  187. at which counterattack may be launched.

  188. They need to know what time frame they work on,

  189. and so on and so on and so forth.

  190. And when all of that is just

  191. second nature to them,

  192. then they're ready for mission.

  193. I think that's what Jesus has said

  194. to his disciples here.

  195. Look, this is so big.

  196. This is so different.

  197. I want to get you ready

  198. for that which I'm asking you to do.

  199. This is a loving briefing

  200. by Jesus for his stormtroopers.

  201. Now is the time to prepare

  202. for harvest mission.

  203. To be forewarned is to be forearmed.

  204. So as I said before,

  205. Jesus, verse 16 again,

  206. come back to that picture.

  207. There just cannot be sugarcoating in this.

  208. It will be really tough, says Jesus.

  209. It will be really dangerous.

  210. Sheep are no match for wild dogs.

  211. I'm calling you to work

  212. in the context of which

  213. you can expect to be savaged.

  214. So Jesus is sending his disciples

  215. to do something so new to them,

  216. so left field to what their life experience

  217. has been thus far,

  218. so difficult for them,

  219. so different from anything

  220. they've ever experienced.

  221. And he says to them,

  222. okay, to get ready for this,

  223. you need to be aware of the dangers,

  224. and then the doves and the snake thing,

  225. that's idiomatic language,

  226. you need to be strategic and thoughtful

  227. as you prepare for this.

  228. It's going to be rough,

  229. but you need to be cunning.

  230. That's the imagery of a snake.

  231. And you need to be cunning

  232. and yet maintain integrity

  233. and gentleness towards people.

  234. That's the image of a dove.

  235. And now is the time

  236. to get that sort of stuff prepared

  237. because when you're in the battlefield,

  238. as it were,

  239. and I'm mixing my metaphors here

  240. between harvest and battlefield,

  241. but when you're on the battlefield,

  242. there is no time.

  243. That is not the time

  244. to sit down and think,

  245. well, okay,

  246. how are we going to do this

  247. or how are we going to think about that?

  248. They need to listen to Jesus.

  249. He's calling them to the task.

  250. He's the Lord of the harvest.

  251. He knows the end from the beginning.

  252. So listen to me,

  253. says Jesus.

  254. Take your lead from me,

  255. says Jesus.

  256. I'll talk you through it.

  257. Understand the cost-benefit analysis

  258. as you go into the task

  259. because if you don't understand that,

  260. you just won't have the stomach for it.

  261. It's my harvest,

  262. says Jesus,

  263. and I'm the one that's sending you out.

  264. Don't forget that.

  265. Big picture.

  266. Now it's interesting that even though

  267. the imagery here is quite gory,

  268. there's no sense of panic on Jesus' part.

  269. The harvest is going according to plan.

  270. And if we go back and look at chapter 9,

  271. verse 37,

  272. Jesus says it's going to be a bumper crop.

  273. All systems go.

  274. Let's get into it.

  275. Opposition and hostility,

  276. while fully expected by Jesus,

  277. does not mean,

  278. does not mean that either Jesus

  279. or the success of the harvest

  280. is somehow or other in doubt

  281. or in trouble.

  282. And so what's left then?

  283. Well, what's left is this.

  284. that the very things that are expected

  285. ahead of us

  286. do not generate the same amount of fear.

  287. Let me just use an illustration of that.

  288. A couple of years ago,

  289. I went and did the Southwest Trail

  290. in Tasmania,

  291. Southwest Coast Trail,

  292. 90 kilometers.

  293. Some really hard climbs,

  294. some really exposed areas,

  295. tough weather.

  296. I was quite fearful

  297. about doing it with my son

  298. who is also the one

  299. who's done his commander training.

  300. So he's super fit

  301. and I'm,

  302. well,

  303. you know,

  304. Matt's already covered that this morning.

  305. But in preparation,

  306. I got the maps out

  307. and I looked at the topography.

  308. I saw where the climbs were.

  309. I knew what days,

  310. what climbs would be on,

  311. what time would take me.

  312. I read the track notes

  313. that you can find on the web

  314. and it tells you

  315. what sort of terrain you're in,

  316. how long it'll take to climb,

  317. where the shelter spots are,

  318. et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

  319. And when I got to do the track,

  320. it was quite manageable.

  321. Why?

  322. My fears settled

  323. because I knew what was coming.

  324. I had prepared for it.

  325. My friends,

  326. if we listen to the words of Jesus,

  327. we can have full confidence

  328. in the Lord of the harvest.

  329. He has actually provided us

  330. ahead of time

  331. as what we might call

  332. a harvest manual.

  333. The track notes,

  334. the topographic maps,

  335. in a sense.

  336. The things we need

  337. to prepare ourselves

  338. for what lies ahead.

  339. And if you look at the language

  340. throughout these verses,

  341. verse 16,

  342. I'm sending you.

  343. Verse 18,

  344. on my account

  345. or for my sake,

  346. you will such and such.

  347. Verse 19,

  348. when this happens,

  349. da, da, da, da.

  350. Verse 22,

  351. because of me,

  352. da, da, da, da.

  353. Jesus is stepping us

  354. through the mission.

  355. When this happens,

  356. make sure you're thinking that.

  357. When that happens,

  358. make sure you're hanging

  359. on to this truth.

  360. And at all time,

  361. keep looking to me,

  362. the Lord of the harvest.

  363. If we expect to be targeted

  364. for speaking the gospel,

  365. then we can't,

  366. at the same time,

  367. be blindsided

  368. when that

  369. incoming round

  370. comes to us.

  371. We won't be,

  372. therefore,

  373. devastated.

  374. We won't be debilitated

  375. because we've been prepared

  376. for it.

  377. We're expecting it.

  378. And we know

  379. what we need to be thinking

  380. to counter it.

  381. So Jesus says,

  382. identify with me,

  383. identifying with me

  384. means opposition

  385. will be normal for you.

  386. Identifying with me

  387. means opposition

  388. will be normal for you.

  389. Being a disciple of Jesus

  390. can be described

  391. in many ways,

  392. but one way,

  393. it's just to say,

  394. is to identify with Jesus,

  395. living under his rule,

  396. expressing his likeness

  397. to those around us.

  398. And verse 32 and 33,

  399. in this passage,

  400. in choosing to serve Jesus,

  401. we are automatically

  402. choosing at the same time

  403. to be on a collision course

  404. with our culture.

  405. The two choices

  406. are made in one choice,

  407. as it were.

  408. Our culture is determined

  409. to find life apart from Jesus,

  410. so therefore,

  411. by definition,

  412. if we choose Jesus

  413. and choose to build a life

  414. around him

  415. and in him

  416. and through him,

  417. then we're choosing

  418. to be opposed

  419. to our culture.

  420. And we can expect

  421. a clash.

  422. If you look at the details then,

  423. verse 24 and 25,

  424. sharing in the mission

  425. of Jesus,

  426. oh,

  427. I got a fright there

  428. because the verse

  429. didn't line up.

  430. It's the wrong chapter.

  431. I mean,

  432. that helps.

  433. Verse 24 and 25,

  434. a disciple is not

  435. above his teacher,

  436. nor a servant

  437. above his master.

  438. It is enough

  439. for the disciple

  440. to be like the teacher

  441. and for the servant

  442. like his master.

  443. If they've called

  444. the master of the house

  445. Beelzebub,

  446. how much more

  447. will they malign

  448. those of his household?

  449. Sharing in the mission

  450. of Jesus

  451. is to step

  452. into the role

  453. of the suffering servant.

  454. Is to follow

  455. the pathway

  456. that Jesus followed,

  457. which was the pathway

  458. of suffering

  459. and then glory.

  460. Verse 17 and 18.

  461. Beware of men,

  462. for they will deliver

  463. you over to courts

  464. and flog you

  465. in their synagogues

  466. and you'll be dragged

  467. before governors

  468. and kings

  469. for my sake

  470. to bear witness

  471. before them

  472. and the Gentiles.

  473. Like Jesus,

  474. we can expect

  475. all sorts of people

  476. to try and silence

  477. our testimony

  478. from the informal,

  479. subtle exclusion

  480. from family

  481. or conversations

  482. at work

  483. to the much more

  484. formal,

  485. judicial exclusions

  486. of courtrooms

  487. and punishment.

  488. And at times

  489. that means

  490. we'll be cast

  491. as criminals

  492. when the things

  493. that we see

  494. vile in society

  495. are venerated

  496. and applauded

  497. and protected.

  498. We'll be the subject

  499. of unjust accusations

  500. and I think

  501. in the not too distant future

  502. imprisonment.

  503. Physical and verbal

  504. balance

  505. and so the list

  506. can go on.

  507. And verse 21.

  508. You will be hated

  509. by all

  510. for my name's sake.

  511. So Jesus has

  512. some very specific

  513. scenarios

  514. but then he sort of

  515. steps back

  516. and says,

  517. well look,

  518. actually,

  519. the truth of the matter

  520. is that there'll just

  521. be a randomness

  522. to people who hate you.

  523. People who've got

  524. no other reason

  525. to hate you

  526. except that

  527. you use the word

  528. Christian.

  529. We've experienced that.

  530. It's just,

  531. there's no rationale

  532. to it,

  533. except that

  534. I'm a Christian

  535. therefore I've got

  536. to be

  537. the subject

  538. of hatred.

  539. Verse 22.

  540. That was verse 22

  541. I was looking at

  542. there more.

  543. Yep.

  544. Verse 21.

  545. Got myself back

  546. to front here again.

  547. We can expect

  548. the hatred

  549. of family.

  550. How many times

  551. have we seen that?

  552. One family member

  553. becomes a Christian

  554. and they're just

  555. excluded,

  556. if not formally.

  557. They're excluded

  558. by sniggering

  559. behind the scenes.

  560. Innuendo.

  561. And sometimes

  562. just the hatred

  563. against Christ

  564. will actually

  565. override

  566. the strong

  567. binds

  568. of family.

  569. and in their

  570. most extreme

  571. cases

  572. will actually

  573. result in

  574. total exclusion

  575. or even

  576. in cases

  577. of murder.

  578. Brothers and

  579. sisters,

  580. various levels

  581. of opposition

  582. will be

  583. normal.

  584. It is

  585. enough

  586. for the

  587. disciple

  588. to be

  589. like the

  590. master.

  591. in some

  592. ways you

  593. can read

  594. that

  595. statement,

  596. that sentence

  597. as a

  598. statement

  599. of

  600. privilege.

  601. In that

  602. context,

  603. go back

  604. to what I

  605. said earlier

  606. about verse

  607. 16,

  608. in that

  609. context

  610. we must

  611. be smart,

  612. we must

  613. be sober,

  614. and we

  615. must be

  616. gospel-shaped

  617. as we

  618. plan how

  619. to respond

  620. to these

  621. sorts of

  622. things.

  623. And that

  624. takes me

  625. into the

  626. next point

  627. where the

  628. Lord of the

  629. harvest calls

  630. us to

  631. trust him

  632. as well as

  633. to serve

  634. him.

  635. In chapters

  636. 8 and 9,

  637. we worked

  638. through a few

  639. weeks ago

  640. now,

  641. the context

  642. of nine

  643. miracles.

  644. miracles.

  645. And in

  646. those two

  647. chapters we

  648. were confronted

  649. with a

  650. theme of

  651. faith across

  652. the different

  653. miracles.

  654. And some

  655. involved in

  656. those circumstances

  657. and situations

  658. were commended

  659. for great

  660. faith.

  661. And the

  662. disciples

  663. particularly were

  664. called out for

  665. a lack of

  666. faith.

  667. And as we're

  668. working through

  669. that, I

  670. wanted to find

  671. a word that

  672. would pick up

  673. the idea of

  674. faith there.

  675. I describe

  676. faith as the

  677. ability to

  678. see past

  679. what you can

  680. see.

  681. To see past

  682. immediate

  683. circumstances

  684. to something

  685. that's true

  686. behind those

  687. circumstances.

  688. So there was

  689. uncleanness,

  690. there was

  691. sickness,

  692. there was

  693. death,

  694. there was

  695. storm,

  696. there was

  697. demon possession.

  698. So faith

  699. meant being

  700. able to see

  701. past those

  702. immediate

  703. things to

  704. the Jesus

  705. who actually

  706. had the

  707. power and

  708. the compassion

  709. and the

  710. authority to

  711. control and

  712. change those

  713. things.

  714. Well I think

  715. it's the same

  716. here.

  717. The word

  718. faith isn't

  719. used but I

  720. think it's

  721. the same

  722. concept here.

  723. As Jesus

  724. sends out his

  725. disciples to

  726. the work of

  727. harvesting,

  728. he called

  729. them to

  730. great faith.

  731. That is,

  732. he presents

  733. scenarios here

  734. and as he

  735. presents these

  736. scenarios he's

  737. saying to them

  738. keep looking

  739. at me.

  740. Look through

  741. your

  742. circumstances

  743. when they

  744. arise in

  745. front of you.

  746. Look through

  747. your circumstances

  748. and see the

  749. Lord of the

  750. harvest behind

  751. each one of

  752. those circumstances.

  753. The Lord of

  754. the harvest who

  755. will use each

  756. of those

  757. circumstances

  758. towards the

  759. success of

  760. the harvest.

  761. Now,

  762. just let me

  763. prop here for a

  764. minute and say

  765. I'm not for

  766. a moment

  767. advocating that

  768. we should go

  769. yay,

  770. suffering and

  771. persecution.

  772. That would just

  773. be stupid in

  774. the extreme.

  775. Nobody in the

  776. right mind would

  777. enjoy the

  778. opposition and

  779. suffering listed

  780. here.

  781. There will be

  782. anxiety.

  783. There will be

  784. fears.

  785. Jesus' point

  786. here is that

  787. when those

  788. anxieties and

  789. fears threaten

  790. to overwhelm us

  791. and debilitate us,

  792. then he says,

  793. look through

  794. them.

  795. Keep your

  796. eyes on me.

  797. Keep looking

  798. at me.

  799. Not only have I

  800. gone before you

  801. down this pathway,

  802. but I am actually

  803. the answer to your

  804. fears.

  805. I am the one

  806. who will actually

  807. set you free

  808. from fear and

  809. allow courage

  810. and confidence.

  811. I will set you

  812. free from saying,

  813. no, I don't want

  814. to go there.

  815. I'm not going to

  816. risk putting my

  817. head up to speak

  818. for Jesus.

  819. I'll get it

  820. blown,

  821. clean off.

  822. To opportunity

  823. to speak

  824. of the Lord

  825. of the harvest.

  826. If we keep

  827. our eyes on

  828. Jesus,

  829. then we will

  830. have opportunity

  831. to bring

  832. gospel truth

  833. to each

  834. circumstance.

  835. Fear will be

  836. dispelled in

  837. favor of courage,

  838. confidence,

  839. opportunity,

  840. and yes,

  841. even

  842. privilege.

  843. If you're into

  844. history at all,

  845. countless

  846. thousands

  847. of believers

  848. have died

  849. in the most

  850. gruesome

  851. circumstances

  852. expressing

  853. their sense

  854. of privilege.

  855. Hard to

  856. believe.

  857. Maybe it's

  858. an outworking

  859. of the Holy

  860. Spirit saying,

  861. I will give

  862. you words to

  863. say in your

  864. darkest moment.

  865. For countless

  866. thousands of

  867. those words

  868. have been,

  869. praise God

  870. that I've been

  871. counted worthy

  872. to suffer with.

  873. it's a little

  874. bit foreign

  875. to me,

  876. I have to

  877. be honest

  878. and say to

  879. you,

  880. I have not

  881. experienced

  882. that,

  883. but I sure

  884. hope that

  885. will be real

  886. for me if

  887. the day

  888. comes when

  889. I do have

  890. to face

  891. it.

  892. I sure

  893. hope and

  894. I sure

  895. pray.

  896. So let's

  897. jump into

  898. four points

  899. very quickly

  900. and then I'm

  901. done.

  902. Four detailed

  903. points now

  904. looking through

  905. each of the

  906. scenarios.

  907. We're never

  908. on our own

  909. in this

  910. harvest field.

  911. Verses 18,

  912. 19 and 20.

  913. Now imagine

  914. the fear.

  915. So he's talking

  916. there about

  917. dragging them

  918. before courts

  919. and governors,

  920. religious courts,

  921. religious professors

  922. cross-examining

  923. them and so on

  924. and so forth.

  925. Imagine the fear

  926. that would take

  927. hold of these

  928. twelve guys

  929. whom we said

  930. last week

  931. were uneducated,

  932. probably even

  933. uncouth,

  934. very ordinary

  935. fishermen.

  936. That's all

  937. they'd ever known.

  938. The biggest

  939. argument they

  940. had to have

  941. was with a

  942. fish.

  943. And here

  944. Jesus is

  945. saying you're

  946. going to be

  947. dragged before

  948. courts and

  949. you're going to

  950. be there to

  951. give testimony

  952. to me.

  953. Imagine the

  954. fear.

  955. Before all

  956. sorts of

  957. powerful

  958. officials,

  959. hostile

  960. courts,

  961. how could

  962. they possibly

  963. have any

  964. consistent

  965. compelling

  966. testimony to

  967. Jesus,

  968. let alone

  969. one that

  970. would stand

  971. up against

  972. an intimidation

  973. of public

  974. trial and

  975. cross-examination?

  976. how could

  977. it possibly

  978. be possible?

  979. Too many

  980. possibles in

  981. there.

  982. Look through

  983. the circumstances

  984. says Jesus

  985. and remember

  986. that the

  987. Holy Spirit

  988. will be your

  989. unseen resource

  990. at that

  991. moment.

  992. The supernatural

  993. enabling of my

  994. Holy Spirit

  995. will give you

  996. both words

  997. and physical

  998. strength,

  999. not just

  1000. to be

  1001. there but

  1002. to be

  1003. compelling

  1004. as you

  1005. testify to

  1006. me.

  1007. Truth

  1008. dispels

  1009. anxiety

  1010. and fear

  1011. and means

  1012. the people

  1013. who otherwise

  1014. would not

  1015. hear the

  1016. gospel get

  1017. to do so.

  1018. There they

  1019. are in

  1020. these courts.

  1021. The courts

  1022. were meant

  1023. to silence

  1024. them and

  1025. the court

  1026. officials are

  1027. actually hearing

  1028. the gospel.

  1029. We see that

  1030. right through

  1031. the book

  1032. of Acts.

  1033. These same

  1034. disciples hold

  1035. before the

  1036. Jewish religious

  1037. courts,

  1038. hold before

  1039. Roman courts,

  1040. before even

  1041. the emperor

  1042. himself,

  1043. Roman provincial

  1044. leaders and so

  1045. on and so

  1046. forth and they

  1047. speak with such

  1048. passion and

  1049. conviction and

  1050. clarity that

  1051. blow me down,

  1052. they get the

  1053. better of their

  1054. learned court

  1055. officials.

  1056. Who silences

  1057. who?

  1058. Well read Acts

  1059. and you'll find

  1060. out.

  1061. We're never

  1062. alone in the

  1063. harvest field.

  1064. Number two,

  1065. apparent defeat

  1066. becomes new

  1067. opportunity,

  1068. verses 22 and

  1069. 23.

  1070. Now I'm not

  1071. quite sure

  1072. exactly about

  1073. this but this

  1074. is my best

  1075. take on these

  1076. two verses.

  1077. In verse 16

  1078. and then verse

  1079. 10 to 15

  1080. last week,

  1081. Jesus gives

  1082. his disciples

  1083. freedom to be

  1084. strategic and

  1085. intentional in

  1086. their work.

  1087. Without context

  1088. in the background,

  1089. I think the

  1090. point here in

  1091. verse 23 is

  1092. that at

  1093. times his

  1094. disciples must

  1095. just be content

  1096. to say,

  1097. look, the

  1098. most faithful

  1099. thing for me

  1100. to do today

  1101. is to pack

  1102. up and move

  1103. to another

  1104. village.

  1105. Such is the

  1106. hostility and

  1107. the persecution

  1108. here that

  1109. there's nothing

  1110. to begin.

  1111. I'm just

  1112. going to flee.

  1113. I'm going to

  1114. move on while

  1115. I can still

  1116. move on.

  1117. and the

  1118. reason they

  1119. can do that

  1120. is because

  1121. security is

  1122. in Jesus,

  1123. not in the

  1124. actual place

  1125. of doing

  1126. the harvesting.

  1127. so when the

  1128. time comes to

  1129. flee to a

  1130. new place,

  1131. then Jesus

  1132. said,

  1133. don't flee

  1134. thinking that

  1135. you've been

  1136. defeated,

  1137. even though it

  1138. might feel and

  1139. look like defeat

  1140. as you're

  1141. fleeing,

  1142. rather,

  1143. in a sense,

  1144. relax and

  1145. move to a new

  1146. relocation because

  1147. a new relocation

  1148. is a new

  1149. opportunity,

  1150. a new village,

  1151. a new setting

  1152. to speak the

  1153. truth of the

  1154. gospel,

  1155. the truth

  1156. of Jesus.

  1157. Don't fear

  1158. being hated,

  1159. don't fear

  1160. fleeing as

  1161. refugees.

  1162. In serving

  1163. Jesus,

  1164. you're actually

  1165. more secure,

  1166. more stable

  1167. than those

  1168. you're fleeing

  1169. from.

  1170. And again,

  1171. we see that

  1172. worked out in

  1173. Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  1174. Remember,

  1175. the Christians

  1176. were very

  1177. reluctant to

  1178. leave Jerusalem,

  1179. even though

  1180. that's the

  1181. brief that

  1182. Jesus had

  1183. given them.

  1184. What was it

  1185. that forced

  1186. them finally

  1187. to leave

  1188. Jerusalem?

  1189. Persecution.

  1190. And it

  1191. says in

  1192. Acts chapter 8,

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  1193. as they

  1194. left and

  1195. wandered

  1196. around various

  1197. places looking

  1198. for somewhere

  1199. to bank

  1200. down,

  1201. they gossiped

  1202. the gospel.

  1203. Who would

  1204. have thought

  1205. persecution

  1206. brought in

  1207. the harvest?

  1208. Well,

  1209. who would

  1210. have thought

  1211. Jesus thought

  1212. it?

  1213. We were a

  1214. bit slow to

  1215. learn it,

  1216. perhaps.

  1217. many were

  1218. saved as

  1219. a result.

  1220. Number

  1221. three,

  1222. the truth

  1223. will come

  1224. out,

  1225. that life

  1226. with Jesus

  1227. is much

  1228. better than

  1229. life in

  1230. this world.

  1231. And again,

  1232. 26,

  1233. 27,

  1234. 28,

  1235. it's hard

  1236. to know

  1237. exactly what

  1238. the application

  1239. should be

  1240. or how to

  1241. understand it,

  1242. but this

  1243. is what I've

  1244. come up with

  1245. this week.

  1246. So it

  1247. goes like

  1248. this,

  1249. verse 26,

  1250. have no fear

  1251. of them,

  1252. for nothing

  1253. is covered

  1254. that will

  1255. not be

  1256. revealed or

  1257. hidden that

  1258. will not

  1259. be known.

  1260. What I

  1261. tell you in

  1262. the dark,

  1263. say in the

  1264. light.

  1265. What you

  1266. hear whispered,

  1267. proclaim on

  1268. the housetops.

  1269. I think it

  1270. goes something

  1271. like this,

  1272. that the

  1273. enemies of

  1274. Jesus think

  1275. they can get

  1276. away with

  1277. mistreating

  1278. and abusing

  1279. Jesus'

  1280. harvesters.

  1281. Why?

  1282. Because those

  1283. sorts of

  1284. things often

  1285. happen in

  1286. the secret

  1287. or discreetly.

  1288. But I

  1289. think the

  1290. point here

  1291. is not

  1292. so.

  1293. That every

  1294. action one

  1295. day will

  1296. be made

  1297. public and

  1298. they'll be

  1299. called to

  1300. account for

  1301. them.

  1302. And so

  1303. what does

  1304. that mean

  1305. for Christians

  1306. who are

  1307. perhaps in

  1308. history,

  1309. if you want

  1310. to step

  1311. back and

  1312. look at

  1313. history,

  1314. perhaps

  1315. being

  1316. severely

  1317. abused

  1318. if not

  1319. butchered?

  1320. Well,

  1321. it means

  1322. this,

  1323. that they

  1324. can rest

  1325. in their

  1326. suffering.

  1327. It is

  1328. enough to

  1329. be like

  1330. the master.

  1331. They can

  1332. rest in the

  1333. suffering knowing

  1334. that one

  1335. day both

  1336. the truth of

  1337. the gospel

  1338. and their

  1339. own faithful

  1340. witness to

  1341. Jesus will

  1342. be brought

  1343. to light

  1344. and that

  1345. the deeds

  1346. of their

  1347. enemies will

  1348. be judged

  1349. accordingly.

  1350. in other

  1351. words,

  1352. we don't

  1353. have to

  1354. worry

  1355. about

  1356. justice

  1357. or

  1358. injustice

  1359. or

  1360. validation

  1361. or even

  1362. protecting

  1363. life

  1364. itself

  1365. because the

  1366. Lord of

  1367. the harvest

  1368. sees

  1369. everything.

  1370. And

  1371. ultimately

  1372. that's where

  1373. it takes

  1374. us,

  1375. verse 28

  1376. I think.

  1377. The gospel

  1378. perspective

  1379. in verse

  1380. 28 is

  1381. this,

  1382. that we

  1383. need in

  1384. situations

  1385. of unjust

  1386. accusation

  1387. and unjust

  1388. treatment,

  1389. unjust

  1390. accusations,

  1391. whatever the

  1392. word is,

  1393. I don't

  1394. know,

  1395. unjust,

  1396. unjust,

  1397. I'm confused.

  1398. In those

  1399. situations we

  1400. can just

  1401. in a sense

  1402. let it

  1403. go.

  1404. We don't

  1405. need to

  1406. fear the

  1407. enemies of

  1408. the gospel.

  1409. We sit

  1410. loosely to

  1411. life because

  1412. we see life

  1413. in this

  1414. world,

  1415. physical life

  1416. here and

  1417. now in this

  1418. world as a

  1419. temporary

  1420. life.

  1421. And we

  1422. see this

  1423. world as

  1424. something we

  1425. don't really

  1426. belong.

  1427. And we're

  1428. actually waiting

  1429. for the

  1430. forever life

  1431. that is the

  1432. real life

  1433. for us

  1434. in the

  1435. world to

  1436. come.

  1437. So therefore

  1438. we don't

  1439. need to

  1440. fear the

  1441. enemies of

  1442. the gospel

  1443. because they

  1444. don't have

  1445. ultimate

  1446. power.

  1447. They think

  1448. they have

  1449. ultimate

  1450. power but

  1451. in actual

  1452. fact they

  1453. have very

  1454. limited

  1455. power.

  1456. The most

  1457. they can

  1458. do is

  1459. just take

  1460. my life

  1461. physically.

  1462. They can't

  1463. actually get

  1464. close to

  1465. my spiritual

  1466. life,

  1467. my forever

  1468. life.

  1469. And again

  1470. if you look

  1471. back through

  1472. history that

  1473. has absolutely

  1474. caused rage

  1475. from those

  1476. who have been

  1477. butchering

  1478. Christians in

  1479. the most awful

  1480. ways because

  1481. they knew

  1482. jolly well that

  1483. having inflicted

  1484. the worst

  1485. horrors they

  1486. could on

  1487. that person

  1488. that person

  1489. in a sense

  1490. was defying

  1491. them.

  1492. There was

  1493. something they

  1494. couldn't get

  1495. to.

  1496. Jim

  1497. Elliot,

  1498. missionary to

  1499. Indian

  1500. tribes in

  1501. South America

  1502. once said,

  1503. he is no

  1504. fool who

  1505. gives up

  1506. that which

  1507. he cannot

  1508. keep in

  1509. order to

  1510. gain that

  1511. which he

  1512. cannot lose.

  1513. I think

  1514. it was only

  1515. months after

  1516. that that

  1517. Jim Elliot

  1518. was murdered

  1519. by the

  1520. Indians he

  1521. had sought

  1522. to gospel

  1523. for so many

  1524. years.

  1525. And I

  1526. think the

  1527. story is

  1528. that I

  1529. think there

  1530. was nobody

  1531. had been

  1532. responded to

  1533. Jesus before

  1534. he was

  1535. murdered.

  1536. But strangely

  1537. to us

  1538. anyway,

  1539. not to the

  1540. Lord of the

  1541. harvest,

  1542. that tribe

  1543. of Indians

  1544. became

  1545. Christian,

  1546. many of

  1547. them,

  1548. observing

  1549. Elliot as

  1550. he died.

  1551. Again,

  1552. who would

  1553. have thought?

  1554. And again,

  1555. the answer

  1556. is,

  1557. well,

  1558. the Lord

  1559. of the

  1560. harvest

  1561. thought that.

  1562. We're just

  1563. a bit slow

  1564. to catch

  1565. up on that

  1566. gospel

  1567. perspective.

  1568. Lastly,

  1569. your father

  1570. cares deeply

  1571. for you

  1572. and controls

  1573. every detail

  1574. of your

  1575. life.

  1576. Look at

  1577. verses 29

  1578. through to

  1579. 31.

  1580. Jesus

  1581. tells his

  1582. disciples,

  1583. and it's a

  1584. funny verse

  1585. here,

  1586. Jesus tells

  1587. his disciple

  1588. that a

  1589. sparrow

  1590. does not

  1591. die

  1592. apart from

  1593. your

  1594. father.

  1595. Now,

  1596. it seems

  1597. to me like

  1598. the sentence

  1599. stopped

  1600. abruptly

  1601. there.

  1602. Apart

  1603. from your

  1604. father's

  1605. what?

  1606. I think

  1607. the word

  1608. we have to

  1609. supply there,

  1610. and we're

  1611. meant to

  1612. supply there,

  1613. apart from

  1614. your father's

  1615. will.

  1616. will.

  1617. The point

  1618. is simple,

  1619. I think.

  1620. God's

  1621. will

  1622. determines

  1623. the

  1624. lifespan

  1625. of a

  1626. sparrow

  1627. whose

  1628. relationship

  1629. to God

  1630. is simply

  1631. creature

  1632. to

  1633. creator.

  1634. By

  1635. comparison,

  1636. we relate

  1637. to God

  1638. as father

  1639. and child.

  1640. So it's a

  1641. how much

  1642. more

  1643. argument.

  1644. If God

  1645. cares for

  1646. the details

  1647. of a

  1648. sparrow,

  1649. how much

  1650. more does

  1651. he care for

  1652. the details

  1653. of his

  1654. child?

  1655. Again,

  1656. we do

  1657. not need

  1658. to fear.

  1659. if we

  1660. can see

  1661. through

  1662. the

  1663. circumstance.

  1664. We feel

  1665. abandoned.

  1666. We feel

  1667. as if

  1668. in the

  1669. middle of

  1670. ministry,

  1671. well,

  1672. God's so

  1673. busy around

  1674. the world,

  1675. he doesn't

  1676. even see

  1677. this that

  1678. I'm

  1679. experiencing

  1680. and enduring.

  1681. Not so.

  1682. God's

  1683. sovereign power

  1684. and will

  1685. guards and

  1686. determines

  1687. every moment

  1688. of your

  1689. life and

  1690. my life.

  1691. and our

  1692. moment and

  1693. method of

  1694. death.

  1695. Your

  1696. father is

  1697. equally

  1698. caring in

  1699. the hardest

  1700. times as

  1701. in the

  1702. easiest

  1703. times.

  1704. In

  1705. whatever part

  1706. of the

  1707. harvest field

  1708. you may

  1709. find yourself

  1710. in.

  1711. He will

  1712. never deny

  1713. or abandon

  1714. his child.

  1715. Picking

  1716. up this

  1717. verse,

  1718. David Livingstone,

  1719. missionary to

  1720. Africa,

  1721. once said,

  1722. we are

  1723. immortal

  1724. until God

  1725. has done

  1726. with us.

  1727. That would

  1728. allow courage

  1729. to come to

  1730. the surface,

  1731. wouldn't it,

  1732. over fear?

  1733. Corrie

  1734. Ten Boom,

  1735. the same,

  1736. didn't use

  1737. exactly their

  1738. words,

  1739. but the same

  1740. idea as she

  1741. expressed her

  1742. faith in

  1743. front of the

  1744. Nazis day

  1745. in and day

  1746. out in a

  1747. concentration

  1748. camp.

  1749. Friends,

  1750. we need to

  1751. learn to

  1752. trust God

  1753. as well as

  1754. serve him.

  1755. I think that's

  1756. been my

  1757. problem over

  1758. the years.

  1759. I've been

  1760. busy trying

  1761. to serve,

  1762. but I

  1763. haven't quite

  1764. been as

  1765. busy trying

  1766. to make

  1767. sure I

  1768. trust him

  1769. in every

  1770. situation.

  1771. we need

  1772. to keep

  1773. our eyes

  1774. on Jesus.

  1775. We need

  1776. to always

  1777. have our

  1778. eyes on

  1779. Jesus,

  1780. because that's

  1781. who we're

  1782. looking through

  1783. the circumstances

  1784. to see.

  1785. And only

  1786. that, I

  1787. think,

  1788. will give

  1789. us the

  1790. perspective

  1791. to be

  1792. faithful and

  1793. engaged

  1794. with

  1795. excitement

  1796. in the

  1797. harvest.

  1798. So,

  1799. wrapping up,

  1800. and I

  1801. know I've

  1802. gone way

  1803. over length,

  1804. so you've

  1805. been very

  1806. kind that you

  1807. haven't actually

  1808. worked out yet

  1809. only, but

  1810. I just want to

  1811. wrap up with a

  1812. couple of

  1813. thoughts.

  1814. Where has

  1815. your cost-benefit

  1816. analysis of

  1817. what Jesus is

  1818. calling you to

  1819. hear in the

  1820. harvest,

  1821. where has that

  1822. left you or

  1823. taken you?

  1824. what's your

  1825. mindset when

  1826. it comes to

  1827. engaging in

  1828. the harvest,

  1829. as Jesus

  1830. invites you to

  1831. and expects

  1832. you to,

  1833. as his

  1834. child?

  1835. Do you

  1836. find yourself

  1837. wanting to

  1838. get involved

  1839. in witnessing

  1840. for Jesus,

  1841. but you just

  1842. can't find

  1843. yourself getting

  1844. past how

  1845. much you'd

  1846. have to give

  1847. up to do

  1848. so?

  1849. Basic comfort,

  1850. personal freedom,

  1851. reputation,

  1852. money.

  1853. Is that

  1854. where you're

  1855. stuck?

  1856. Do you

  1857. find that your

  1858. anxiety and

  1859. fear renders

  1860. you silent?

  1861. When you know

  1862. jolly well,

  1863. it's not a

  1864. lack of

  1865. opportunity,

  1866. even though we

  1867. often say that.

  1868. It's actually

  1869. fear.

  1870. We render

  1871. us silent

  1872. when we

  1873. should speak.

  1874. Are you

  1875. stuck being

  1876. debilitated and

  1877. crushed by

  1878. previous attempts

  1879. at witnessing

  1880. because you

  1881. think they've

  1882. not worked out

  1883. well for you

  1884. or because the

  1885. person you

  1886. spoke to in

  1887. the end didn't

  1888. become a

  1889. Christian?

  1890. Or perhaps

  1891. worst case

  1892. scenario is you

  1893. actually know you

  1894. actually mucked it

  1895. up.

  1896. I didn't say

  1897. what I should

  1898. have said or I

  1899. said too much

  1900. in the wrong

  1901. way.

  1902. Is that where

  1903. you're stuck?

  1904. By your own

  1905. failures in the

  1906. past?

  1907. Well my

  1908. friend, can I

  1909. just say to you

  1910. this morning, if

  1911. that's you, then

  1912. can I suggest you've

  1913. taken your eyes

  1914. stuffed Jesus?

  1915. And that's a

  1916. lonely place to

  1917. be, I think.

  1918. I know because

  1919. I've been there.

  1920. You've stopped

  1921. listening to him.

  1922. You're probably

  1923. trying to serve

  1924. Jesus in the

  1925. harvest mission

  1926. without having

  1927. learned to

  1928. trust him.

  1929. cost benefit

  1930. analysis that we

  1931. could remember

  1932. of Jesus in

  1933. his saving of

  1934. you.

  1935. Massive cost

  1936. to deal with

  1937. the sins of

  1938. David Calderwood.

  1939. Benefit.

  1940. Jesus doesn't

  1941. get the benefit.

  1942. I get the

  1943. benefit of his

  1944. death.

  1945. And the

  1946. scripture tells

  1947. me I've been

  1948. filled.

  1949. Jesus was

  1950. rich and he

  1951. became poor

  1952. and I get the

  1953. riches of his

  1954. blessing.

  1955. I'm filled

  1956. daily with the

  1957. riches of his

  1958. blessing to

  1959. overflowing.

  1960. So when I see

  1961. Jesus and look

  1962. at Jesus, I

  1963. can be free to

  1964. allow those

  1965. blessings to

  1966. overflow for the

  1967. sake of Christ.

  1968. Pray the

  1969. Lord of the

  1970. harvest might

  1971. send you into

  1972. the harvest

  1973. field with

  1974. new faith,

  1975. new ability to

  1976. see the Lord of

  1977. the harvest behind

  1978. every immediate

  1979. circumstance of

  1980. persecution or

  1981. suffering.

  1982. And pray that

  1983. you might learn

  1984. to trust.

  1985. Pray with me

  1986. now.

  1987. Lord, we

  1988. thank you for

  1989. your kindness.

  1990. That in a

  1991. passage that

  1992. immediately

  1993. presented as

  1994. just overwhelmingly

  1995. negative, and

  1996. yet it opens up

  1997. with a rich

  1998. warmth and

  1999. positivity.

  2000. We thank you,

  2001. Lord, that you've

  2002. not just called us

  2003. to a task that

  2004. you haven't also

  2005. equipped us for.

  2006. And we pray,

  2007. Lord, that we

  2008. might, in a

  2009. sense, read your

  2010. manual that's

  2011. before us today,

  2012. and take it on

  2013. board, and

  2014. practice, practice,

  2015. practice, so that

2016. we might be able to

2017. keep our eyes on you

  2018. and see through

  2019. immediate circumstances

  2020. and find that our
