  1. So we're going to be reading Matthew 11, 1 to 19.

  2. When Jesus had finished instructing his 12 disciples,

  3. he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.

  4. Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ,

  5. he sent word by his disciples and said to him,

  6. Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?

  7. And Jesus answered them,

  8. Go and tell John what you hear and see.

  9. The blind received their sight, and the lame walk.

  10. Lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up,

  11. and the poor have good news preached to them,

  12. and blessed is the one who is not offended by me.

  13. As they went away, Jesus began to speak up to the crowds concerning John.

  14. What did you go out into the wilderness to see?

  15. A reed shaken by the wind?

  16. What then did you go out to see?

  17. A man dressed in soft clothing?

  18. Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in king's houses.

  19. What then did you go out to see?

  20. A prophet?

  21. Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

  22. This is he of whom it is written.

  23. Behold, I send my messenger before your face,

  24. who will prepare your way before you.

  25. Truly, I say to you,

  26. among those born of women,

  27. there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist.

  28. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

  29. From the days of John the Baptist until now,

  30. the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence,

  31. and the violent take it by force.

  32. For all the prophets and the law prophesied unto John.

  33. And if you are willing to accept it,

  34. he is Elijah who is to come.

  35. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

  36. But to what shall I compare this generation to?

  37. It is like children sitting in the marketplace

  38. and calling to their playmates.

  39. We played the flute for you, and you did not dance.

  40. We sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.

  41. For John came neither eating nor drinking,

  42. and they say, he has a demon.

  43. The son of man came eating and drinking,

  44. and they say, look at him,

  45. a glutton and a drunkard,

  46. a friend of tax collectors and sinners.

  47. Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.

  48. Well, good morning, everyone.

  49. Most would be familiar with the axiom,

  50. you can't see the forest for the trees.

  51. It's an old saying.

  52. And basically what it means is

  53. that we often get lost in the details of a circumstance

  54. and lose the big picture.

  55. And sometimes when we do that,

  56. we get immobilized,

  57. because there's that much detail

  58. that we actually can't start the project

  59. or get into the circumstance.

  60. I think that will help us

  61. as we move into Matthew 11,

  62. chapter 11, 12, and 13, in fact.

  63. Jesus sort of digs into the growing opposition he's facing.

  64. So he said he's the Lord of the harvest.

  65. He spoke about his mission as harvesting.

  66. He's the Lord of the harvest.

  67. He promised a bumper harvest.

  68. But this opposition is growing.

  69. And it appears in 11, chapter 12, and 13

  70. that Jesus is helping his disciples

  71. sort of step back from the details

  72. and refocus on the big picture again.

  73. See the forest, as it were,

  74. when they might have been overly focused on the trees,

  75. the huge trees in front of them,

  76. which, as we saw over the last few weeks,

  77. was the huge trees of opposition and persecution

  78. and rejection that Jesus is preparing his disciples for.

  79. So let's just turn back to chapter 9, verse 35 to 37,

  80. just to see how all that plays out.

  81. Jesus describes his kingdom-building mission

  82. of teaching, proclaiming, and healing

  83. as harvesting.

  84. As I said before, he declares himself

  85. to be the Lord of the harvest,

  86. promises a bumper harvest.

  87. Then there's that long section

  88. over the last three weeks we've looked at

  89. where Jesus prepares his disciples for the opposition.

  90. For the persecution, for the rejection

  91. that's going to come to them.

  92. Now, here's how it fits together, I think,

  93. that it's quite likely

  94. that the disciples wouldn't be feeling much excitement

  95. about being involved in the work of harvest

  96. after you work through all that stuff.

  97. And so I think Jesus does then

  98. step back from the detail

  99. and put again, the big picture.

  100. The big picture of the ongoing harvest mission.

  101. And so what Jesus says in these first verses

  102. of chapter 11 is that

  103. he wants his disciples to remember,

  104. go back and focus again,

  105. remember that my harvesting or kingdom-building

  106. is totally and comfortably on track.

  107. And we'll see that in the first 15 verses

  108. of chapter 11 we're going to look at this morning.

  109. So again, let me just make connections.

  110. I love making connections

  111. because structure is really important

  112. in the way Matthew's put together

  113. his account here of the life of Jesus.

  114. If you go back to chapter 10, verse 5,

  115. it's almost identical in a sense

  116. to chapter 11, verse 1.

  117. And I think again,

  118. repeating myself, I think for the third time now,

  119. after detailing the huge challenges of harvest

  120. and the perspective needed to face those challenges,

  121. which is essentially chapter 10,

  122. Jesus now resumes the work of harvesting.

  123. So he's back on track.

  124. It's almost as if there's been an aside.

  125. We'll talk about this really difficult subject,

  126. but no, let's get back on track.

  127. Chapter 1.

  128. Jesus finished instructing his 12 disciples

  129. who went out from there

  130. to teach and preach in their cities.

  131. And he's very keen for the disciples

  132. that good news salvation is everywhere,

  133. but perhaps not as expected

  134. in verses 2 through to 6.

  135. Now John's disciples,

  136. John's locked up in prison,

  137. we'll say more about that in a minute,

  138. but John's disciples come to ask Jesus a question.

  139. Jesus, are you the one that was to come?

  140. Are you the one that I announced?

  141. Or should we look for somebody else?

  142. Now, I don't know about you,

  143. but I just find that sometimes in the Christian life,

  144. things just don't add up.

  145. Things just don't make sense.

  146. It's confusing.

  147. We just can't work out what God's doing in our life.

  148. Does God love me?

  149. If God loves me,

  150. then why am I enduring this circumstance?

  151. Why are these things happening to me?

  152. I suspect,

  153. we're not actually told,

  154. but I suspect

  155. that may well have been

  156. how John the Baptist was feeling.

  157. Remember John the Baptist is Jesus' cousin?

  158. He's been locked up now

  159. for the best part of a year,

  160. as best we can work out

  161. from the historical records.

  162. And for John,

  163. things just weren't happening

  164. as he expected them to happen.

  165. He obviously knew what Jesus was doing,

  166. but the things that Jesus was doing

  167. just didn't seem to add up.

  168. It wasn't what he expected of Messiah.

  169. Now, flick back with me

  170. to chapter 3 of Matthew,

  171. where John actually is preaching,

  172. fiery preaching to introduce Jesus.

  173. Jesus.

  174. And remember,

  175. he was preaching repentance

  176. in preparation for Messiah,

  177. for God's King and Savior to come.

  178. And when you look at chapter 3, verse 12,

  179. you get the sense that John

  180. was expecting a figure of judgment.

  181. Jesus was,

  182. the Messiah was going to come,

  183. and the idea of fire there

  184. is always God's judgment.

  185. He would come with a winnowing fork.

  186. This is a sort of violent metaphor

  187. of God coming to bring judgment.

  188. He would gather in his people,

  189. his good people,

  190. and the ungodly would be destroyed,

  191. burned up like chaff.

  192. Two years later,

  193. John's languaging in a dungeon,

  194. courtesy of Herod

  195. and Herodias' wife,

  196. he had dared to call out their immorality.

  197. Now, Herod was the leader of God's people.

  198. He should have been set

  199. on the model of godliness,

  200. but no,

  201. he defended his immorality,

  202. and John's now been in a dungeon

  203. for the best part of a year.

  204. Now, I can well imagine John thinking,

  205. how is this working?

  206. How is this happening?

  207. It doesn't make sense

  208. that just when my part of the ministry

  209. was getting underway,

  210. just as people were coming in their hordes

  211. in repentance to be baptized

  212. in preparation for the coming Messiah,

  213. just then when I introduced Messiah,

  214. everything seemed to be charging forward,

  215. suddenly stopped,

  216. and here I am stuck in a dungeon.

  217. What's happening?

  218. What's going on?

  219. It doesn't make sense.

  220. And perhaps it didn't make sense

  221. about Jesus either.

  222. He was confused about Jesus too.

  223. He hears a lot about compassion

  224. and mercy

  225. and restoration

  226. and healing

  227. and teaching.

  228. Well, if Jesus really was

  229. God's king and savior

  230. coming into the world

  231. to reestablish God's kingdom

  232. or rule,

  233. where was the judgment

  234. that was supposed to come with that?

  235. And why am I still in prison?

  236. There's Herod and Herodias.

  237. They just flagrantly

  238. turn a blind eye to God's law

  239. and do the exact opposite

  240. and they're enjoying the good life

  241. and here I am

  242. having preached faithfulness

  243. and repentance.

  244. Here I am stuck in prison.

  245. You can well imagine John being confused.

  246. Just doesn't seem to be adding up.

  247. Well, verse four,

  248. Jesus is really quick.

  249. to assure John

  250. that he did have it right.

  251. I am Messiah,

  252. says Jesus.

  253. My mission is on track.

  254. And he does that

  255. by referring John back to Isaiah,

  256. the prophet Isaiah.

  257. And there's numerous references

  258. there back in chapter 35

  259. and chapter 61

  260. and possibly chapter 26 and 29.

  261. They're written on the sermon outline there.

  262. So he pushes John

  263. back to Isaiah

  264. and he says,

  265. here's the confirmation.

  266. Isaiah said,

  267. this is what Messiah would be doing

  268. and this is what I'm doing.

  269. It's happening

  270. as it was forecast,

  271. prophesied to happen.

  272. But there's another thing

  273. that Jesus is doing

  274. by pushing John back to Isaiah.

  275. Because when you go back

  276. and read those prophecies,

  277. Isaiah is very clear

  278. that Messiah would be known

  279. as much for the day of mercy

  280. as well as the day of judgment.

  281. The two are inseparable.

  282. But when you go back

  283. and read those prophecies,

  284. Isaiah said,

  285. this is what you'd see

  286. of Messiah first.

  287. exactly as Jesus quotes there.

  288. There would be

  289. a day of mercy,

  290. a day of grace,

  291. a day of deliverance

  292. from the effects of sin,

  293. a day of renewal

  294. into God's character

  295. for God's people

  296. in the context

  297. of a bigger day of judgment.

  298. judgment.

  299. And with that then,

  300. Jesus, in a sense,

  301. concludes this first interaction

  302. with a wisdom statement,

  303. verse 6.

  304. Blessed is the one

  305. who is not offended by me.

  306. That of itself

  307. is probably an allusion

  308. back to Isaiah chapter 8,

    Isaiah 8:13

  309. verses 13 and 14.

  310. And in that context,

  311. it's a warning

  312. not to reject God's work

  313. among his people.

  314. Why?

  315. Because it might be

  316. unexpected

  317. in the way it's delivered.

  318. And if you go back

  319. and read chapter 8,

  320. that's exactly what was happening

  321. for God's people.

  322. They were looking

  323. at an invasion

  324. by Assyria.

  325. And they were scratching

  326. their head.

  327. Could this possibly

  328. be God's hand?

  329. And God says,

  330. yeah,

  331. absolutely right.

  332. It is my hand.

  333. This is my way

  334. of purifying my people.

  335. So come back

  336. into Matthew 11.

  337. Jesus is gently

  338. saying to John,

  339. don't trip over me

  340. because I'm not

  341. delivering Messiah's promise

  342. as you might have expected.

  343. I just want to pause there

  344. briefly and say

  345. that's a wonderful

  346. perspective for us

  347. in our work

  348. of harvesting

  349. continuing today.

  350. It was a wonderful

  351. perspective for John's disciples,

  352. for Jesus' disciples,

  353. and it comes right down

  354. to us.

  355. In spite of

  356. growing opposition

  357. and unbelief,

  358. in spite of the huge

  359. personal cost

  360. that was detailed

  361. in chapter 10,

  362. in spite of the huge

  363. challenges

  364. as harvest workers,

  365. God's good news salvation

  366. is happening everywhere.

  367. And it's still

  368. happening in our world.

  369. People are still

  370. being confronted

  371. by Jesus

  372. through his word

  373. and they're still

  374. being radically

  375. changed,

  376. radically renewed.

  377. Yes,

  378. massive opposition,

  379. growing opposition

  380. in our Australian culture,

  381. but nothing

  382. ever has

  383. and ever will

  384. stop

  385. the work

  386. of harvest.

  387. because the Lord

  388. of the harvest

  389. is busy

  390. in his harvest field.

  391. And then secondly,

  392. the perspective

  393. is good,

  394. is that

  395. we don't always

  396. experience

  397. God's salvation

  398. and renewing

  399. as we might expect.

  400. The whole letter

  401. to Hebrews

  402. is about Christians

  403. who thought that,

  404. well,

  405. once we become

  406. Christians,

  407. then life will

  408. get easier.

  409. Our sins are forgiven

  410. and God will give us

  411. this and this

  412. and this

  413. and this

  414. and they find out

  415. that their expectations

  416. were quite wrong.

  417. And we experience

  418. that,

  419. don't we?

  420. That sometimes

  421. we realize

  422. that being a Christian

  423. is actually harder.

  424. It puts us

  425. at odds

  426. with our families.

  427. It puts us

  428. at odds

  429. with our neighbors.

  430. And yet,

  431. the Lord

  432. will use

  433. those situations

  434. of conflicts

  435. to be

  436. our maturing,

  437. our growing.

  438. so again,

  439. like God's people

  440. experience

  441. in the Old Testament,

  442. sometimes the greatest

  443. periods of growth

  444. or most times

  445. the greatest period

  446. of growth

  447. comes from

  448. really unexpected

  449. circumstances,

  450. sometimes even

  451. left field

  452. intersections

  453. in our lives

  454. that just

  455. shake us out

  456. of our tree

  457. and we fall

  458. flat on our face

  459. and suddenly

  460. we realize

  461. that,

  462. boy,

  463. we've been

  464. looking here

  465. depending on that

  466. and we need

  467. to come back

  468. and trust

  469. the Lord.

  470. It's not

  471. what we expected,

  472. is it?

  473. And yet,

  474. these things

  475. are good things

  476. and evidence

  477. of God's kindness

  478. to us.

  479. So,

  480. God's good news

  481. salvation

  482. is happening

  483. everywhere,

  484. not quite as expected

  485. and then

  486. Jesus goes on

  487. then in the next

  488. verses to

  489. affirm

  490. specifically

  491. John's harvest

  492. work

  493. and I think

  494. I want to add

  495. in there

  496. that he's

  497. picking up a theme

  498. here that doubt

  499. is not unbelief.

  500. We'll pick that up

  501. in a minute.

  502. So,

  503. in verse 7,

  504. as soon as

  505. John's disciples

  506. leave,

  507. Jesus then uses

  508. the opportunity

  509. to address the crowd

  510. and he speaks

  511. to the crowd

  512. specifically

  513. about John

  514. and it's a very

  515. positive,

  516. affirming

  517. statement.

  518. So,

  519. John's just come

  520. with a question

  521. that might reflect

  522. confusion

  523. or doubt

  524. or maybe even

  525. a touch of anger

  526. and stern correction

  527. of Jesus.

  528. Why am I still

  529. in prison?

  530. But Jesus

  531. doesn't get

  532. put off track

  533. with that.

  534. He warmly

  535. affirms

  536. John's ministry,

  537. John's harvesting

  538. and he spells

  539. out

  540. the significance

  541. of John's ministry

  542. to the crowds

  543. who

  544. probably by now

  545. have dismissed

  546. him.

  547. He's out of sight

  548. for more than a year.

  549. Out of mind

  550. probably.

  551. Or perhaps

  552. the crowds

  553. Jesus feared,

  554. the crowds

  555. might have taken

  556. John's

  557. doubting question

  558. or confused

  559. question

  560. as,

  561. like we do

  562. today,

  563. some sort of

  564. political backflip.

  565. You know,

  566. there was John

  567. 12 months ago,

  568. he's this fiery

  569. preacher for repentance,

  570. he was convinced

  571. that this was the

  572. Messiah

  573. and now

  574. we've got

  575. this pathetic

  576. John just

  577. asking this

  578. wimpy question.

  579. Whatever the

  580. reason,

  581. Jesus uses

  582. the opportunity

  583. to affirm

  584. the ministry

  585. of John

  586. to the crowds.

  587. The language

  588. is a bit

  589. strange,

  590. but the point

  591. is clear.

  592. Jesus puts

  593. a couple of

  594. options

  595. to the crowds.

  596. So,

  597. what do you

  598. have in mind

  599. when you think

  600. of John the

  601. Baptist,

  602. that guy

  603. you went out

  604. to see

  605. in the wilderness?

  606. Well,

  607. Jesus is really

  608. saying,

  609. you're not

  610. to think

  611. of John

  612. as a reed

  613. on the river

  614. bank.

  615. In other words,

  616. somebody who's

  617. fickle,

  618. who's lacking

  619. conviction,

  620. who's sort of

  621. blown about

  622. by the political

  623. breeze.

  624. He came,

  625. made a big

  626. splash,

  627. and now he's

  628. gone again.

  629. Blown away

  630. by political

  631. public opinion

  632. or perhaps

  633. personal circumstances,

  634. maybe even

  635. he's rejecting

  636. Jesus now.

  637. No,

  638. says Jesus,

  639. do not think

  640. of John

  641. like that.

  642. Nor,

  643. were you to

  644. think of him

  645. at the other

  646. end of the

  647. extreme,

  648. someone who

  649. just craved

  650. the easy,

  651. ostentatious

  652. life and

  653. reputation of

  654. some sort of

  655. powerful

  656. government

  657. official.

  658. And if this

  659. was a reference

  660. to Herod and

  661. Herodias,

  662. probably in the

  663. day,

  664. powerful government

  665. officials were

  666. also powerful

  667. and enjoying

  668. the good life

  669. because of

  670. corruption,

  671. an extortion

  672. of their people.

  673. So,

  674. Jesus

  675. has given

  676. the crowds

  677. two pretty

  678. obviously

  679. silly extremes.

  680. He's not

  681. this,

  682. and he's

  683. not that.

  684. So,

  685. what is he?

  686. And Jesus

  687. then goes on

  688. to say,

  689. he's a prophet.

  690. Not just a

  691. prophet,

  692. not just any

  693. prophet,

  694. but the

  695. greatest

  696. prophet.

  697. John was a

  698. special messenger

  699. or worker

  700. of God.

  701. Why was he

  702. so special?

  703. Why was he in

  704. a category by

  705. himself?

  706. Because he

  707. himself was

  708. the subject

  709. of a prophecy.

  710. He was,

  711. as Malachi

  712. said,

  713. he was the

  714. one who

  715. would be

  716. like the

  717. new Elijah,

  718. who would

  719. have the

  720. privilege of

  721. preparing

  722. and announcing

  723. God's long

  724. promised king

  725. and savior.

  726. And Jesus

  727. is very clear

  728. here.

  729. Nobody spoke

  730. as clearly

  731. about Jesus

  732. as did

  733. John the

  734. Baptist.

  735. Yet,

  736. end of

  737. verse 11,

  738. yet,

  739. because John

  740. died before

  741. the death and

  742. resurrection of

  743. Jesus,

  744. his understanding

  745. of Jesus and

  746. how his people

  747. would experience

  748. salvation in

  749. God's kingdom

  750. was very

  751. limited.

  752. And

  753. exceptionally

  754. limited compared

  755. to our

  756. understanding,

  757. because we

  758. live in this

  759. side of the

  760. death and

  761. resurrection and

  762. ascension of

  763. Jesus.

  764. So John was

  765. the greatest

  766. prophet.

  767. He spoke the

  768. most clearly of

  769. Jesus at that

  770. point in time,

  771. but even his

  772. testimony to

  773. Jesus is

  774. dwarfed by

  775. what just

  776. an ordinary

  777. Christian like

  778. you and I

  779. can do.

  780. Now,

  781. again,

  782. I just want to

  783. pause because

  784. Jesus' affirmation

  785. of John

  786. indirectly also

  787. affirms us

  788. in our

  789. harvest work.

  790. And the

  791. first thing,

  792. coming back to

  793. it,

  794. is that

  795. Jesus doesn't

  796. put John's

  797. doubts or

  798. confusion in

  799. the category of

  800. unbelief.

  801. Jesus goes on to

  802. speak about

  803. unbelief in

  804. verse 16,

  805. and he's very

  806. open and clear

  807. about it,

  808. but he

  809. obviously doesn't

  810. put John's

  811. doubts and

  812. question and

  813. confusion in

  814. that category.

  815. Why not?

  816. What's the

  817. difference?

  818. Because John

  819. was searching

  820. for truth.

  821. John was

  822. trying to

  823. understand

  824. Jesus,

  825. and ultimately

  826. he gets the

  827. affirmation in

  828. verse 6 from

  829. Jesus that

  830. he is the

  831. blessed,

  832. one of the

  833. blessed of

  834. verse 6,

  835. because of

  836. what he did

  837. with his

  838. doubts.

  839. He brought

  840. his doubts

  841. to Jesus.

  842. He was

  843. determined to

  844. discover the

  845. truth from

  846. the lips of

  847. the one who

  848. could give

  849. him the

  850. truth.

  851. Then he

  852. was determined

  853. to align his

  854. life and

  855. experience

  856. and circumstance

  857. and hope

  858. with what

  859. Jesus said

  860. to him,

  861. rather than

  862. his own

  863. thinking and

  864. expectations.

  865. We'll see a

  866. little bit more

  867. of that when

  868. we come to

  869. look at

  870. verses 16

  871. to 19.

  872. The second

  873. thing is that

  874. I just want

  875. us to note

  876. in passing

  877. here that

  878. Jesus had

  879. such a

  880. warm testimony

  881. to John.

  882. This is an

  883. important point

  884. because I'm

  885. going to take

  886. us back into

  887. chapter 10

  888. for this,

  889. especially

  890. verses 32

  891. and 33

  892. of chapter

  893. 10.

  894. See,

  895. back then

  896. Jesus said,

  897. look,

  898. if you stand

  899. with me,

  900. I will never

  901. abandon you.

  902. And there's a

  903. sense here in

  904. which Jesus

  905. is actually

  906. doing publicly

  907. that which

  908. he said back

  909. in chapter 10

  910. verses 32

  911. and 33.

  912. He's not

  913. ashamed to

  914. stand with

  915. his cousin,

  916. even though his

  917. cousin is now

  918. shamed by being

  919. imprisoned.

  920. He's not

  921. embarrassed by

  922. John's persona.

  923. And remember,

  924. John was a

  925. pretty weird

  926. looking guy.

  927. He affirms

  928. John's harvest

  929. work,

  930. even though

  931. John's period

  932. of harvesting

  933. was relatively

  934. short and

  935. actually cut

  936. short by

  937. his circumstance.

  938. And I

  939. think that

  940. might also

  941. then be

  942. an outworking

  943. of verses

  944. 41 and 42

  945. of chapter 10.

  946. I said last

  947. week that it

  948. was a bit hard

  949. to understand

  950. exactly what

  951. that was,

  952. but I think

  953. this could be

  954. an outworking

  955. of it.

  956. In other words,

  957. Jesus is saying,

  958. here's John,

  959. he's a good

  960. example.

  961. I said that

  962. different people

  963. had different

  964. points of

  965. engagement in

  966. the harvest,

  967. different levels

  968. of involvement

  969. in the harvest.

  970. People were

  971. doing different

  972. sorts of things.

  973. Is one better

  974. than the other?

  975. No.

  976. They're all

  977. equal.

  978. It's all

  979. part of the

  980. family business,

  981. the harvesting.

  982. John had his

  983. part.

  984. Yes, he was

  985. an outstanding

  986. prophet.

  987. Short period

  988. of time,

  989. yes.

  990. Truncated

  991. out of the

  992. blue,

  993. yes.

  994. But he

  995. did his

  996. work of

  997. harvesting

  998. for the

  999. great king.

  1000. And the

  1001. third thing

  1002. I want to

  1003. just draw

  1004. your attention

  1005. to here

  1006. is that

  1007. any believer

  1008. is better

  1009. able to

  1010. witness or

  1011. speak about

  1012. Jesus

  1013. than John

  1014. the Baptist.

  1015. That's quite

  1016. a remarkable

  1017. thought.

  1018. We just

  1019. loathe it.

  1020. I think we

  1021. go too fast

  1022. over it.

  1023. You're a

  1024. Christian here

  1025. this morning.

  1026. You've got a

  1027. vastly

  1028. greater

  1029. understanding

  1030. of Jesus

  1031. than even

  1032. John the

  1033. Baptist

  1034. had.

  1035. Because you're

  1036. this side of

  1037. his death

  1038. and resurrection.

  1039. John could

  1040. only begin

  1041. to picture

  1042. how Jesus

  1043. would bring

  1044. salvation and

  1045. what it would

  1046. mean to be in

  1047. his kingdom

  1048. and what his

  1049. kingdom would

  1050. look like.

  1051. We can see

  1052. that in a

  1053. detail that

  1054. John could

  1055. never even

  1056. have imagined.

  1057. We've

  1058. experienced it.

  1059. We experience

  1060. it daily.

  1061. So it

  1062. seems strange

  1063. to me that I

  1064. keep hearing

  1065. Christians saying

  1066. I don't know

  1067. what to say.

  1068. I don't

  1069. know how to

  1070. testify to

  1071. Jesus.

  1072. Well,

  1073. moving on.

  1074. The third

  1075. thing as

  1076. Jesus

  1077. harvesting

  1078. works on

  1079. track,

  1080. Jesus does

  1081. say expect

  1082. people constantly

  1083. to attempt

  1084. to redefine

  1085. salvation and

  1086. God's kingdom.

  1087. Now we're

  1088. going to

  1089. look at

  1090. some of

  1091. the difficult

  1092. verses here,

  1093. 12,

  1094. 13,

  1095. 14,

  1096. 15.

  1097. And they

  1098. are difficult

  1099. verses.

  1100. Verse 12

  1101. particularly has

  1102. been argued

  1103. over by

  1104. scholars for

  1105. generations.

  1106. Many

  1107. commentators and

  1108. commentaries dig

  1109. into that verse

  1110. in depth and

  1111. I'm not going to

  1112. do that this

  1113. morning.

  1114. I'm just going to

  1115. offer you what I

  1116. think is a

  1117. reasonable

  1118. alternative for

  1119. that verse.

  1120. Recognizing it

  1121. is a difficult

  1122. verse.

  1123. And I think the

  1124. context is really

  1125. important.

  1126. Given,

  1127. oh better read

  1128. the verse.

  1129. So what does

  1130. it mean then

  1131. when Jesus

  1132. says from the

  1133. days of John

  1134. the Baptist

  1135. until now,

  1136. the kingdom

  1137. of heaven or

  1138. the kingdom

  1139. of God has

  1140. suffered violence

  1141. and the

  1142. violent take it

  1143. by force.

  1144. It's a strange

  1145. verse,

  1146. isn't it?

  1147. I think that

  1148. given that Jesus

  1149. is explaining

  1150. to the crowd

  1151. the significance

  1152. of John's

  1153. ministry in

  1154. relation to

  1155. his own,

  1156. then the

  1157. phrase from

  1158. the day of

  1159. John the

  1160. Baptist

  1161. until now

  1162. describes

  1163. Jesus'

  1164. mission of

  1165. reestablishing

  1166. the kingdom

  1167. of God

  1168. from the

  1169. time it

  1170. began in

  1171. the context

  1172. of John's

  1173. ministry.

  1174. So Jesus

  1175. is now about

  1176. to make a

  1177. comment that

  1178. sort of sums

  1179. up and reflects

  1180. his period of

  1181. kingdom building

  1182. or harvesting

  1183. work.

  1184. the first

  1185. phrase that

  1186. the ESV

  1187. has in

  1188. here,

  1189. the kingdom

  1190. of heaven

  1191. has suffered

  1192. violence,

  1193. can also

  1194. be translated

  1195. properly and

  1196. I think

  1197. better.

  1198. The kingdom

  1199. of heaven

  1200. has been

  1201. coming

  1202. forcefully

  1203. or has

  1204. been forcefully

  1205. advancing.

  1206. Now that

  1207. makes sense

  1208. when we

  1209. understand

  1210. chapter 8

  1211. and 9

  1212. and Jesus'

  1213. teaching

  1214. ministry.

  1215. is it

  1216. where each

  1217. miracle

  1218. was Jesus

  1219. seizing back

  1220. his kingdom

  1221. from Satan

  1222. and the

  1223. kingdom of

  1224. this world

  1225. or the

  1226. kingdom of

  1227. evil.

  1228. Each time

  1229. a person's

  1230. life was

  1231. renewed,

  1232. it was a

  1233. forceful

  1234. transition,

  1235. a forceful

  1236. battle,

  1237. excursion

  1238. into the

  1239. world of

  1240. evil and

  1241. an extraction

  1242. and a

  1243. renewal.

  1244. It's a

  1245. picture language

  1246. in other

  1247. words.

  1248. It's a

  1249. metaphor.

  1250. And it

  1251. speaks of

  1252. the ongoing

  1253. work of

  1254. the gospel.

  1255. The kingdom

  1256. of heaven

  1257. or the

  1258. kingdom of

  1259. God has

  1260. been forcefully

  1261. advancing.

  1262. The violent

  1263. take it by

  1264. force?

  1265. Well I

  1266. think that

  1267. accurately

  1268. reflects the

  1269. experience of

  1270. Jesus.

  1271. Throughout the

  1272. ministry of

  1273. Jesus, and

  1274. we've seen

  1275. that already

  1276. in these

  1277. chapters up

  1278. to this

  1279. point,

  1280. chapter 11,

  1281. 12, and

  1282. 13 digs

  1283. into this

  1284. even more.

  1285. The

  1286. opposition and

  1287. the rejection

  1288. and the

  1289. challenges that

  1290. Jesus faced,

  1291. especially from

  1292. the Jewish

  1293. religious

  1294. establishment.

  1295. His own

  1296. experience has

  1297. been all

  1298. sorts of

  1299. people are

  1300. trying to

  1301. capture the

  1302. kingdom of

  1303. heaven for

  1304. their own

  1305. agenda.

  1306. Israel.

  1307. They're

  1308. trying to

  1309. hijack it

  1310. and make

  1311. it what

  1312. they want

  1313. rather than

  1314. what they

  1315. hear Jesus

  1316. saying it's

  1317. going to

  1318. be.

  1319. The

  1320. Jewish

  1321. leaders,

  1322. they wanted

  1323. political

  1324. deliverance.

  1325. They wanted

  1326. to enjoy a

  1327. period of

  1328. dominance as

  1329. the leaders of

  1330. a new world

  1331. empire.

  1332. That's what they

  1333. wanted the

  1334. kingdom of

  1335. heaven to be

  1336. when it

  1337. wouldn't just

  1338. be deliverance

  1339. of Israel,

  1340. but it

  1341. would be

  1342. dominance over

  1343. all other

  1344. nations.

  1345. Crowds

  1346. looked at

  1347. some of the

  1348. Old Testament

  1349. stuff and

  1350. thought,

  1351. well,

  1352. when Messiah

  1353. comes,

  1354. he's going

  1355. to bring a

  1356. time of

  1357. unprecedented

  1358. prosperity.

  1359. We're going

  1360. to really

  1361. enjoy the

  1362. good life.

  1363. We're going

  1364. to have

  1365. money to

  1366. burn and

  1367. all sorts

  1368. of good

  1369. toys to

  1370. play with.

  1371. Others in

  1372. the crowd

  1373. wanted to

  1374. make God's

  1375. salvation and

  1376. kingdom about

  1377. physical

  1378. healing.

  1379. restoration in

  1380. this life.

  1381. So I just

  1382. want all my

  1383. eggs and

  1384. pains fixed.

  1385. I don't

  1386. really want

  1387. any notion

  1388. of spiritual

  1389. renewal or

  1390. spiritual

  1391. commitment.

  1392. I just want

  1393. to be able to

  1394. enjoy life as

  1395. I know it

  1396. now, but

  1397. without the

  1398. eggs and

  1399. pains.

  1400. So Jesus is

  1401. useful as a

  1402. Mr. Fix-It,

  1403. but let's not

  1404. get carried

  1405. away.

  1406. And so on

  1407. and so forth.

  1408. But ultimately

  1409. the point

  1410. sits easily

  1411. with this

  1412. passage and

  1413. fits easily

  1414. with Jesus'

  1415. ministry.

  1416. From the

  1417. very start

  1418. of Jesus'

  1419. mission, the

  1420. kingdom of

  1421. heaven has

  1422. been advancing

  1423. exactly as

  1424. planned, and

  1425. yes, that is a

  1426. spiritual battle.

  1427. It doesn't

  1428. happen easily.

  1429. And yes, it

  1430. has not been

  1431. and will not

  1432. be without

  1433. opposition.

  1434. opposition.

  1435. And it

  1436. won't be

  1437. without

  1438. unbelief in

  1439. many different

  1440. forms.

  1441. And friends, I

  1442. think this is

  1443. the point that

  1444. John missed in

  1445. the original

  1446. question that he

  1447. sent to

  1448. Jesus.

  1449. This is the

  1450. perspective that

  1451. explains why he's

  1452. in prison.

  1453. And this is the

  1454. perspective that we

  1455. need to remember

  1456. until Christ

  1457. returns.

  1458. The harvest will

  1459. happen as

  1460. planned, but it

  1461. will never be

  1462. free from

  1463. opposition, from

  1464. a whole range

  1465. of people, some

  1466. who will surprise

  1467. us.

  1468. And verse 14

  1469. and 15, the

  1470. challenge is to

  1471. respond to

  1472. Jesus as he

  1473. is, as he was

  1474. spoken about, not

  1475. as they want him

  1476. to be or demand

  1477. him to be.

  1478. But you

  1479. see, that's

  1480. verse, end of

  1481. verse 15, he

  1482. who is the

  1483. ears to hear.

  1484. In other words,

  1485. Jesus said, look,

  1486. this perspective of

  1487. understanding that

  1488. the kingdom will

  1489. advance in the

  1490. midst of

  1491. opposition, that

  1492. requires spiritual

  1493. insight.

  1494. And I think that

  1495. then links us into

  1496. verses 16 to

  1497. 19, where Jesus

  1498. then says, looks

  1499. around him at the

  1500. crowds and said,

  1501. well, actually,

  1502. we're talking

  1503. about spiritual

  1504. insight, that's

  1505. one thing this

  1506. generation, in

  1507. other words, people

  1508. at large are

  1509. seriously lacking

  1510. him.

  1511. They just don't

  1512. have the spiritual

  1513. insight to see

  1514. Jesus as they

  1515. ought to see him.

  1516. And that leaves

  1517. the only option

  1518. therefore as

  1519. unbelief.

  1520. And Jesus speaks

  1521. about unbelief

  1522. here, and the

  1523. heading I want to

  1524. use is, unbelief

  1525. wants a saviour,

  1526. but doesn't want

  1527. God, ultimately.

  1528. Jesus likens the

  1529. attitude of people

  1530. to children

  1531. playing.

  1532. And I don't

  1533. know, I can

  1534. remember from my

  1535. own days when the

  1536. family got together,

  1537. I'm talking about

  1538. whenever I was a

  1539. child, there was

  1540. always one of the

  1541. mob, and there

  1542. was a mob, but

  1543. there was always one

  1544. who wanted to

  1545. control things, or

  1546. several that wanted

  1547. to control things,

  1548. and that would just

  1549. set up a big

  1550. fight.

  1551. And we'd end up

  1552. not playing anything

  1553. because nobody

  1554. would agree to,

  1555. you know, back

  1556. off and let it

  1557. happen.

  1558. I think that's

  1559. what Jesus is

  1560. saying here.

  1561. Whatever happens,

  1562. people aren't

  1563. happy.

  1564. They're not

  1565. satisfied.

  1566. And John and

  1567. Jesus refused to

  1568. play that game.

  1569. So as if John,

  1570. Jesus is still

  1571. affirming John by

  1572. saying John wasn't

  1573. the one who's

  1574. fickle, the

  1575. fickle ones were

  1576. the crowds.

  1577. Fickle ones are

  1578. the people who

  1579. hear Jesus teaching

  1580. initially with

  1581. excitement, hear

  1582. John's teaching

  1583. initially with

  1584. excitement, but

  1585. then rejected

  1586. him.

  1587. At first they

  1588. rejected John

  1589. because he was

  1590. embarrassing, he

  1591. was not

  1592. attractive, he

  1593. was not

  1594. cultured, he

  1595. was not the

  1596. sort of person

  1597. God would use

  1598. to announce the

  1599. coming of

  1600. Messiah.

  1601. But then

  1602. afterwards, when

  1603. they understood

  1604. his message of

  1605. repentance, they

  1606. rejected him

  1607. because he was

  1608. too harsh, too

  1609. demanding.

  1610. He challenged

  1611. the religious

  1612. lifestyle and

  1613. the belief that

  1614. they were

  1615. acceptable to

  1616. God because

  1617. they were Jews,

  1618. because they

  1619. were good

  1620. people.

  1621. And any

  1622. preaching about

  1623. repentance just

  1624. crashed through

  1625. that.

  1626. And so John

  1627. had to go, his

  1628. teaching had to

  1629. go.

  1630. And likewise

  1631. the nature of

  1632. unbelief caused

  1633. people to reject

  1634. Jesus.

  1635. He was the

  1636. other extreme.

  1637. He came with

  1638. the idea of

  1639. celebration.

  1640. He came

  1641. engaging with

  1642. the down and

  1643. outs of

  1644. society.

  1645. So what did

  1646. they say about

  1647. Jesus?

  1648. Well, actually,

  1649. Jesus, you're

  1650. too much like

  1651. the people you

  1652. say you're

  1653. here to save.

  1654. We can't have

  1655. you saying that

  1656. we will be going

  1657. into God's

  1658. kingdom hand in

  1659. hand with

  1660. prostitutes and

  1661. the down and

  1662. outs and the

  1663. riffraff of

  1664. society, the

  1665. people, the

  1666. tax collectors,

  1667. the people you

  1668. seem to love

  1669. hanging out with

  1670. Jesus.

  1671. That's not going

  1672. to work either.

  1673. That's an

  1674. outrage.

  1675. That's an

  1676. embarrassment.

  1677. That's an

  1678. affront to us

  1679. good Jewish

  1680. people.

  1681. So they

  1682. weren't happy

  1683. with Jesus

  1684. either.

  1685. Lacking

  1686. spiritual

  1687. insight, people

  1688. fail to see the

  1689. significance of

  1690. either John or

  1691. Jesus.

  1692. And in their

  1693. ignorance and

  1694. unbelief, they

  1695. reject both.

  1696. John, because his

  1697. call to repentance

  1698. was too harsh,

  1699. threatened their

  1700. sense of

  1701. inherent goodness

  1702. before God.

  1703. And Jesus,

  1704. because his offer

  1705. of grace was too

  1706. generous and too

  1707. widely offered.

  1708. They

  1709. instinctively knew

  1710. they needed a

  1711. savior.

  1712. They weren't

  1713. rejecting the

  1714. concept of

  1715. savior.

  1716. What they were

  1717. rejecting was

  1718. God.

  1719. Their

  1720. unbelief meant

  1721. they backed

  1722. their own sense

  1723. of sovereignty

  1724. and their

  1725. own inherent

  1726. sense of

  1727. goodness.

  1728. And they

  1729. thought, well, I

  1730. don't need to

  1731. repent, but nor

  1732. am I willing to

  1733. accept that the

  1734. riffraff of society

  1735. will also join me

  1736. in heaven on the

  1737. same basis of

  1738. grace.

  1739. I'm looking for a

  1740. savior that will

  1741. fit in with my

  1742. ideas, will fit in

  1743. with my sovereignty,

  1744. that will be

  1745. acceptable to me.

  1746. In verse

  1747. 16, no, the

  1748. end of verse 19,

  1749. sorry, it is,

  1750. wisdom is justified

  1751. by our deeds.

  1752. Again, against

  1753. persistent unbelief,

  1754. the truth and

  1755. reality of the

  1756. gospel is

  1757. demonstrated in

  1758. changed lives.

  1759. lives, changed

  1760. lives that begin

  1761. with a recognition

  1762. of sin, then

  1763. repentance, and

  1764. then leads to the

  1765. Lord Jesus for

  1766. complete renewal and

  1767. acceptance with God

1768. and a place in heaven

  1769. with him forever.

  1770. There's the mark of

  1771. the gospel.

  1772. There's the context

  1773. of the gospel.

  1774. The good news

  1775. gospel is happening,

  1776. it is changing

  1777. lives and there

  1778. will always be

  1779. opposition trying

  1780. to knock it

  1781. down or

  1782. redefine what

  1783. the gospel is and

  1784. what the kingdom

  1785. of heaven looks

  1786. like.

  1787. That's our

  1788. reality.

  1789. Now, just want

  1790. to finish with a

  1791. very, very quick

  1792. challenge.

  1793. So, there are

  1794. many, many

  1795. categories by which

  1796. we can divide

  1797. people in our

  1798. world, and we

  1799. do all the time,

  1800. we have to for

  1801. various reasons.

  1802. Essentially, Jesus

  1803. only uses two

  1804. categories to

  1805. divide people.

  1806. There's belief

  1807. and there's

  1808. unbelief.

  1809. So, the

  1810. challenge this

  1811. morning for any

  1812. and all of you

  1813. here is which

  1814. category are you

  1815. in?

  1816. So, speaking

  1817. specifically to

  1818. those who might

  1819. be caught in

  1820. unbelief, is your

  1821. unbelief hidden

  1822. behind a veneer

  1823. of searching for

  1824. more truth?

  1825. Well, if only I

  1826. could understand

  1827. things better, then

  1828. Jesus would be

  1829. acceptable.

  1830. Well, we've got

  1831. the good news

  1832. gospel spelled

  1833. out very clearly.

  1834. We've got it

  1835. confirmed.

  1836. We've got it

  1837. written as a

  1838. record in the

  1839. Bible.

  1840. We've got it

  1841. confirmed by

  1842. eyewitnesses in

  1843. the Bible.

  1844. We've got the

  1845. testimony of

  1846. countless tens of

  1847. thousands of

  1848. millions down

  1849. through the

  1850. generations.

  1851. How much more

  1852. proof do you

  1853. want or need?

  1854. Or is it, in

  1855. fact, just

  1856. another form of

  1857. unbelief?

  1858. Just throwing a

  1859. handful of dust in

  1860. the air?

  1861. Because ultimately

  1862. you don't want the

  1863. salvation that

  1864. Jesus offers.

  1865. Either because you

  1866. think you don't

  1867. need it, or

  1868. because you think,

  1869. well, I do need

1870. it, but I want to

  1871. modify it to suit

  1872. me.

1873. I want to take on

  1874. the bits I like

  1875. and, you know,

1876. cut off the bits I

  1877. don't like.

  1878. Which would mean

  1879. then that the

  1880. ultimate reason for

  1881. your unbelief would

  1882. be that you

  1883. refuse to give up

  1884. your own

  1885. sovereignty.

  1886. And that can

  1887. only mean, if you

  1888. refuse to give up

  1889. your own

  1890. sovereignty, then

  1891. that can only

  1892. mean that you

  1893. continue to

  1894. believe you're

  1895. competent to

  1896. earn your

  1897. salvation, and

  1898. that God

  1899. will have to

  1900. ultimately give

  1901. you a place in

  1902. heaven because you

  1903. have earned it.

  1904. you are worthy

  1905. of it in your

  1906. own right.

  1907. You are worthy

1908. of it in your own

  1909. right.
