  1. This morning we are reading from Matthew chapter 11, verses 20 through to the end of the chapter.

    Matthew 11:20

  2. So 11 verse 20.

  3. Then he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent.

  4. Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!

  5. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon,

  6. they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

  7. But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.

  8. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven?

  9. You will be brought down to Hades, for if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom,

  10. it would have remained until this day.

  11. But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.

  12. At that time, Jesus declared,

  13. I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wires and understanding

  14. and revealed them to the little children.

  15. Yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.

  16. All things have been handed over to me by my Father.

  17. And no one knows the Son except the Father.

  18. And no one knows the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

  19. Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

  20. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart,

  21. and you will find rest for your souls.

  22. For my yoke is easy and my burden is life.

  23. Well, let's pray first before we start.

  24. Almighty God, we are so thankful that we can have this opportunity to come together,

  25. to listen to your word, to worship you,

  26. to spend time with one another.

  27. We thank you for such a privilege,

  28. and so thank you for even greater things that is to happen

  29. as we await the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ

  30. and the coming of the new city.

  31. Thank you, Lord.

  32. We ask that you may help us today in worshipping you in spirit and in truth.

  33. We pray in Jesus' name.

  34. Amen.

  35. Amen.

  36. Okay, so because it's Christmas,

  37. that's why I chose this title,

  38. A Present with No Wrap.

  39. Have you ever received a present which was not wrapped up in some way?

  40. I've always think that it's a waste of time

  41. and material to wrap presents up

  42. because we are going to throw those papers away.

  43. Scientists estimates that every year during this time of the year,

  44. in the United States alone,

  45. there's five million tons of waste

  46. because of gift wraps and packaging.

  47. It's quite a lot of waste that the world is producing.

  48. But then I think about it.

  49. I sense that we do feel embarrassed to receive a present

  50. that is not wrapped up in some way.

  51. So what is the function of the gift wrap?

  52. Why do we have this wrap?

  53. So I can think of two things.

  54. I mean, it could be more than that.

  55. First of all, you can reveal the intention of the giver.

  56. So the way that the gift is wrapped up,

  57. you know whether the gift is given to you with delight

  58. or whether it was an obligation.

  59. It depends on how it is packaged up.

  60. On the other hand,

  61. the gift wrap can also conceal the embarrassment of the giver.

  62. That is, in particular in Chinese culture,

  63. we give anbaos as presents.

  64. So anbaos are just small red brackets.

  65. It's red paper envelopes with money inside.

  66. When I was young,

  67. I looked forward to Chinese New Year

  68. because I never had any money from my parents during the year.

  69. So there's only time of the year

  70. that I would receive money that would belong to myself.

  71. So people who were a generation older than I was

  72. would give me anbaos.

  73. I remember that some of our relatives were quite poor,

  74. so they couldn't afford to give much.

  75. They could give the smallest note,

  76. this $1 a note.

  77. And it is quite embarrassing

  78. if I open the anbaos.

  79. Sure, I suppose it's quite embarrassing for them.

  80. But because we are not supposed to open the anbaos

  81. until the New Year period is over,

  82. so it saves them in that embarrassment.

  83. And so, yeah,

  84. the gift wrap can, first of all,

  85. reveal the intention of the giver.

  86. Also, it can conceal the embarrassment of the giver.

  87. During my younger time,

  88. the anbaos were just plain red envelopes.

  89. But now they become so commercialized

  90. that these envelopes come in elaborate designs and qualities.

  91. So sometimes the envelopes they sell

  92. could be more expensive than the money that it contains.

  93. And so that's how the packaging has been changing.

  94. So the elaborate wrapping of a present

  95. has gradually replaced the value of the present.

  96. So instead of showing how much the givers value the recipients,

  97. the attractive wrappings of anbaos envelopes

  98. are now telling how the recipients value the givers.

  99. So with the advancement of technologies,

  100. we have learned more and more new ways

  101. to show others how valuable we are.

  102. We live in a generation that sees and treasures

  103. mostly what is on the surface.

  104. So from makeups to cosmetic surgery,

  105. fashions to sports,

  106. from titles to positions,

  107. they are all for keeping up with appearance.

  108. So there are just recent articles there.

  109. The package has become the message.

  110. So it's just talking about how the world has changed.

  111. So now if you buy an iPhone or any phone,

  112. the package itself is very important.

  113. And then you look at YouTube,

  114. there are people who say unboxing the thing.

  115. So the box itself has become very important.

  116. Or in the supermarket,

  117. if you look at all the products,

  118. just like cleaning,

  119. toilet cleaning products they sell,

  120. if you don't know which one to buy,

  121. you're more likely to buy one that is most attractive.

  122. It doesn't matter what the content is.

  123. And so that is how the world has become.

  124. So when I'm in Malaysia,

  125. the fact that I am a doctor,

  126. I have a title,

  127. that makes it easier for me to preach in churches

  128. because it's easier for the church leaders

  129. to invite someone who has a title to be a guest speaker.

  130. So people are being invited to listen to me

  131. because I have a title.

  132. You might think that the Asians were shallow

  133. in the assessment of a person trusting just in the titles.

  134. That's my titles can be my covering.

  135. They don't know about my heart.

  136. Okay.

  137. So that is in Asia.

  138. But in Australia,

  139. so even though we do not care so much about titles,

  140. but we adore,

  141. we care more about even more superficial things.

  142. You can notice that on the television,

  143. who gets interviewed,

  144. who gets the talk to influence the society

  145. is people who are very good in sports

  146. or people who are very good in singing or acting.

  147. They become the opinion leaders.

  148. They become the one who is in the community.

  149. And that is all still occurring,

  150. external things that we are looking at.

  151. So we have learned to wrap ourselves up

  152. with our achievements or appearance.

  153. We also learned to wrap ourselves up

  154. and expand our behaviors with signs.

  155. So when you see that there's an unusual crime committed,

  156. the news station would invite some experts

  157. to explain why such an event happened.

  158. So a professor so-and-so would explain

  159. to relate the criminal's childhood experience,

  160. past traumatic exposures,

  161. and present circumstances,

  162. to explain why they act like that.

  163. there are no more bad people.

  164. Everyone is a victim of something

  165. that causes them to do something against the law.

  166. It is true that we can all be victims at times,

  167. but we have to remember that Jesus was the ultimate victim,

  168. and we can see how he lived.

  169. He did not make use of his victimhood

  170. to cover himself up.

  171. He remained righteous and kind.

  172. So just a brief introduction.

  173. Just to say that we have learned to cover ourselves up

  174. with different gift wraps,

  175. either our achievements,

  176. appearance,

  177. or victimhood.

  178. Why do I choose victimhood as one of them

  179. and there are more of them?

  180. Because I just see so many patients

  181. who are in a state of just dysfunctioning,

  182. and their excuses are usually the victimhood.

  183. Yes, no doubt.

  184. There are lots of victims.

  185. A lot of people are abused as they were young

  186. or even as old.

  187. But then if they keep living under the victimhood,

  188. their life will always be miserable.

  189. It's hard to help them.

  190. And that is so common.

  191. That's why I mentioned that.

  192. It's one of the coverings that we use.

  193. So we'll go to Matthew 11.

  194. We'll start to 20 to 24 first.

  195. So we're talking about Jesus

  196. who was walking in Palestine

  197. among the Israelites.

  198. The generation of people there

  199. have become quite sophisticated.

  200. They are more learned,

  201. or at least they have the Pharisees

  202. and people who are learned

  203. and can explain things better

  204. by the time Jesus came.

  205. So Jesus said,

  206. if the miracles that he performed

  207. had been done in Tyre,

  208. Sidon,

  209. and Sodom,

  210. the people of these cities

  211. would have repented

  212. of their sinful ways.

  213. So Tyre and Sidon

  214. were Gentile cities

  215. that coexisted with Israel

  216. for many years.

  217. Sodom

  218. was a city

  219. that was long gone.

  220. It was a thousand years ago

  221. when it was destroyed by God

  222. because it's been a sinful city.

  223. So these cities

  224. were pagan cities,

  225. or Gentile cities.

  226. They did not know God.

  227. But Jesus said

  228. they would have repented

  229. if Jesus had performed

  230. miracles among them.

  231. The people of

  232. Chorazin,

  233. Bethsaida,

  234. and Kaplanon

  235. saw the miracles,

  236. but they did not repent.

  237. Jesus warned

  238. that they would

  239. suffer a harsher judgment

  240. than the people of Tyre,

  241. Sidon,

  242. and Sodom.

  243. Why would the people

  244. of Israel,

  245. the Israelite cities,

  246. suffer a more serious judgment

  247. than the former cities?

  248. I think you can think of

  249. at least two reasons.

  250. One,

  251. because they have been given

  252. the law and the prophets.

  253. They were told to expect

  254. the coming of the Messiah,

  255. and they were told

  256. what the Messiah would do.

  257. And number two,

  258. because the coming

  259. of the kingdom of God

  260. had been proclaimed to them

  261. there and then

  262. by John the Baptist,

  263. by Jesus himself,

  264. by Jesus' disciples.

  265. So they were

  266. given the information,

  267. and they were given

  268. the warning,

  269. they were given

  270. the invitation,

  271. and they ignored Jesus.

  272. Why did they

  273. ignore Jesus?

  274. Why did they

  275. distrust Jesus

  276. despite the mighty

  277. words done by him?

  278. I think one of the

  279. things is that

  280. because they had religion,

  281. unlike other cities,

  282. the pagan cities

  283. didn't have organized religion,

  284. but they have

  285. organized religion.

  286. Religion became

  287. their identity.

  288. Their leaders

  289. wrap themselves up

  290. with religion.

  291. So their speeches,

  292. their prayers,

  293. their conduct,

  294. they all portray

  295. what was

  296. respectable

  297. in the community.

  298. Jesus and

  299. John the Baptist

  300. did not behave

  301. as their leaders did.

  302. And so

  303. Jesus and

  304. John the Baptist

  305. did not fit

  306. into their

  307. mold,

  308. their idea

  309. of what God

  310. is like.

  311. So,

  312. if

  313. Jesus had

  314. performed

  315. these miracles

  316. in the barbaric

  317. cities of Tyre,

  318. Sidon,

  319. and Sodom,

  320. these people

  321. would fear him

  322. and listen to him.

  323. But in the

  324. civilized city

  325. of

  326. Tauracin,

  327. Bethsaida,

  328. Cabernet,

  329. people there

  330. had already

  331. formed their

  332. idea about

  333. what God

  334. would look like.

  335. They had

  336. created God

  337. in their own

  338. image.

  339. Jesus'

  340. miracle

  341. might be

  342. useful to

  343. them,

  344. but Jesus'

  345. words were

  346. a threat

  347. to their

  348. religious

  349. wrapping.

  350. They did

  351. not want

  352. Jesus to

  353. remove

  354. their

  355. wrapping

  356. and reveal

  357. what was

  358. inside

  359. their

  360. hearts.

  361. Our

  362. wrappings

  363. are very

  364. fragile.

  365. We try

  366. our best

  367. to protect

  368. this

  369. wrapping

  370. because

  371. we think

  372. our

  373. identities

  374. are dependent

  375. on them.

  376. I'll just

  377. give you an

  378. example of

  379. what's

  380. happening

  381. just recently

  382. just at

  383. the moment.

  384. In recent

  385. months,

  386. Netflix

  387. started a

  388. dating show

  389. called

  390. Sexy Beast.

  391. I'm not

  392. sure anybody

  393. watch it?

  394. No?

  395. Sorry.

  396. I have not

  397. watched it

  398. either.

  399. I don't

  400. even have

  401. Netflix.

  402. I got

  403. my information

  404. from an

  405. article in

  406. the

  407. Atlantic

  408. Magazine

  409. dated

  410. 29th

  411. October.

  412. It was

  413. written by

  414. Megan

  415. Garber.

  416. She wrote

  417. about how

  418. reality TV

  419. has become

  420. absurd to

  421. the extreme.

  422. This show

  423. claims that

  424. when it comes

  425. to dating,

  426. we all go

  427. for looks

  428. first.

  429. In this

  430. show,

  431. everyone looks

  432. as weird as

  433. possible.

  434. So the

  435. role of the

  436. makeup or

  437. camouflage is

  438. to stop

  439. participants from

  440. choosing a

  441. partner based

  442. on his or

  443. her look.

  444. the show's

  445. premise is

  446. correct in

  447. recognizing that

  448. we are more

  449. than our

  450. looks.

  451. If you decide

  452. on a spouse

  453. just based on

  454. looks, we

  455. will be in

  456. for a big

  457. shock after

  458. we get

  459. married.

  460. But the

  461. show's

  462. solution is

  463. both dishonest

  464. and wrong.

  465. Dishonest

  466. because all

  467. the participants

  468. would review

  469. their looks

  470. at the end.

  471. So would

  472. they choose

  473. someone who

  474. is not

  475. attractive to

  476. take part in

  477. the show?

  478. I doubt it.

  479. Wrong because

  480. regardless of

  481. what wrapping

  482. you use to

  483. cover up a

  484. person, he

  485. or she is

  486. not going to

  487. reveal their

  488. hearts in a

  489. show like

  490. this.

  491. So Megan

  492. Garber concludes,

  493. Sexy beast

  494. confuses

  495. spectacle for

  496. interestingness.

  497. Its ultimate

  498. feeling though is

  499. that it confuses

  500. appearance with

  501. identity.

  502. I was

  503. surprised by

  504. Megan Garber's

  505. insight into

  506. the problem

  507. we are facing.

  508. The problem

  509. of identity

  510. in the

  511. eye generation

  512. about dignity

  513. in a digital

  514. space and

  515. about the

  516. meaning of

  517. our existence.

  518. She said

  519. sexy beast

  520. confuses the

  521. external wrapping

  522. with the

  523. present or

  524. the person

  525. inside.

  526. Putting another

  527. layer of gift

  528. wrap on the

  529. present does

  530. not usually

  531. help revealing

  532. the identity

  533. of the

  534. present.

  535. person.

  536. We cannot

  537. know a

  538. person by

  539. his or

  540. her external

  541. appearance.

  542. We cannot

  543. even know

  544. ourselves by

  545. our external

  546. appearance or

  547. achievements.

  548. So during

  549. the time of

  550. Jesus,

  551. Nicodemus

  552. visited him

  553. at night.

  554. Being a well-known

  555. and respected

  556. religious leader,

  557. Nicodemus did

  558. not want to

  559. be seen with

  560. Jesus publicly.

  561. Privately,

  562. Nicodemus sensed

  563. that his

  564. religious training

  565. and achievement

  566. did not give

  567. him peace

  568. in his heart.

  569. His religious

  570. wrapping

  571. gained him

  572. respect but

  573. did not give

  574. him rest.

  575. In fact,

  576. he became more

  577. restless and

  578. uncertain about

  579. himself.

  580. So he was

  581. hoping Jesus

  582. could help

  583. him.

  584. Andre

  585. Agassi,

  586. the eighth-time

  587. Grand Slam

  588. winner,

  589. wrote in his

  590. autobiography,

  591. the name of

  592. the book is

  593. called Open,

  594. Now that I

  595. have won a

  596. Slam,

  597. I know

  598. something that

  599. very few

  600. people on

  601. earth are

  602. permitted to

  603. know.

  604. A win does

  605. not feel as

  606. good as

  607. loss feels

  608. bad,

  609. and the

  610. good feeling

  611. doesn't last

  612. as long as

  613. the bad

  614. not even

  615. close.

  616. vast majority

  617. of tennis

  618. players would

  619. never win

  620. any title,

  621. but even

  622. for those

  623. few who

  624. managed to

  625. win all

  626. the titles,

  627. they would

  628. find that

  629. their achievements

  630. were not

  631. enough to

  632. define them,

  633. to give

  634. them a

  635. satisfying

  636. identity.

  637. Throughout

  638. history,

  639. people have

  640. been struggling

  641. to be happy,

  642. and suspect

  643. that most

  644. of the

  645. participants

  646. in Sassy

  647. Beast were

  648. not there

  649. to seek

  650. their identity,

  651. they were

  652. there to

  653. have fun.

  654. However,

  655. our concern

  656. of fun

  657. points to

  658. the emptiness

  659. and restness

  660. of our

  661. hearts.

  662. Our

  663. man-mixed

  664. world

  665. has invented

  666. many ways

  667. to help

  668. cover up

  669. the

  670. pregnancy

  671. inside our

  672. hearts.

  673. Religion

  674. is one

  675. of them,

  676. occupations,

  677. what we

  678. do to

  679. occupy our

  680. time,

  681. drugs and

  682. alcohol,

  683. gambling,

  684. games,

  685. phonography,

  686. sports,

  687. and all

  688. sorts of

  689. therapies.

  690. We think

  691. that we

  692. are wise

  693. and full

  694. of knowledge.

  695. We think

  696. we know

  697. how to

  698. deal with

  699. our sense

  700. of loss

  701. and

  702. meaninglessness.

  703. To the

  704. wise and

  705. learned,

  706. the message

  707. of the

  708. cross belongs

  709. to the

  710. fools.

  711. Only fools

  712. who believe

  713. that there

  714. is such a

  715. thing as

  716. sin,

  717. and that

  718. the creator

  719. God will

  720. need to

  721. send his

  722. son to

  723. die on

  724. the cross

  725. for the

  726. redemption

  727. of our

  728. sins.

  729. In

  730. Matthew

  731. 11,

  732. 25-26,

  733. we are

  734. told what

  735. Jesus'

  736. identity

  737. is.

  738. In

  739. verse 25,

  740. Jesus

  741. declared,

  742. I thank

  743. you,

  744. Father,

  745. Lord of

  746. heaven and

  747. earth,

  748. that you

  749. have

  750. hidden

  751. these

  752. things from

  753. the wise

  754. and the

  755. understanding

  756. and revealed

  757. them to

  758. little

  759. children.

  760. God

  761. is

  762. sovereign.

  763. Why did

  764. Jesus

  765. thank God

  766. for hiding

  767. the truth

  768. from the

  769. wise and

  770. the learned

  771. or the

  772. understanding?

  773. Because

  774. God was

  775. affirming

  776. Jesus'

  777. sovereignty.

  778. Jesus is

  779. equal to

  780. God.

  781. He said,

  782. no one

  783. knows the

  784. son except

  785. the father,

  786. and no one

  787. knows the

  788. father except

  789. the son.

  790. It is only

  791. when Jesus

  792. is sovereign

  793. that we

  794. can worship

  795. him and

  796. put our

  797. trust in

  798. him.

  799. It is

  800. only when

  801. Jesus is

  802. sovereign that

  803. he can offer

  804. us life and

  805. he can call

  806. us to

  807. him.

  808. The wise

  809. and the

  810. learned cannot

  811. in any

  812. way frustrate

  813. the will

  814. of Jesus.

  815. Jesus is

  816. the Lord

  817. of Lords

  818. and the

  819. King of

  820. Kings.

  821. Jesus does

  822. not use

  823. worldly

  824. qualifications

  825. or attractive

  826. external

  827. appearance to

  828. define himself,

  829. nor does

  830. he make

  831. use of

  832. his victim

  833. hope to

  834. defend

  835. himself.

  836. For those

  837. who have

  838. ears to

  839. hear,

  840. the identity

  841. of Jesus

  842. is planned

  843. it is

  844. only when

  845. we see

  846. who Jesus

  847. is,

  848. we could

  849. come before

  850. him with

  851. humility.

  852. And if

  853. we do not

  854. come before

  855. Jesus in

  856. humility,

  857. we are not

  858. coming to

  859. him at

  860. all.

  861. He is

  862. not there

  863. to beg

  864. people to

  865. believe him.

  866. He is

  867. there to

  868. decide who

  869. will believe

  870. him.

  871. He calls

  872. those whom

  873. he has

  874. chosen.

  875. How does

  876. Jesus call

  877. those who

  878. have chosen?

  879. then we

  880. come to

  881. Matthew 11

  882. 28-30.

  883. In

  884. verse 28,

  885. Jesus said,

  886. come to

  887. me,

  888. all who

  889. labor and

  890. are heavy

  891. laden,

  892. and I

  893. will give

  894. you rest.

  895. So when

  896. does Jesus

  897. do this?

  898. When does

  899. Jesus call

  900. us?

  901. I think

  902. when these

  903. two things

  904. happen,

  905. one,

  906. when he

  907. reveals the

  908. ugliness of

  909. our hearts,

  910. two,

  911. when he

  912. reveals his

  913. own beauty

  914. to us.

  915. Jesus knows

  916. that our

  917. hearts are

  918. restless.

  919. He wants

  920. us to

  921. find rest

  922. for our

  923. hearts.

  924. From birth

  925. to death,

  926. we labor

  927. for one

  928. thing or

  929. another.

  930. Our

  931. hearts are

  932. usually full

  933. of burdens.

  934. What are

  935. some of the

  936. burdens that

  937. we carry

  938. every day?

  939. we can

  940. mention any

  941. number of

  942. burdens.

  943. I'll mention

  944. five.

  945. One is

  946. about

  947. livelihood,

  948. so we

  949. worry about

  950. having enough

  951. money to

  952. live, to

  953. pay our

  954. bills, to

  955. pay for

  956. children's

  957. education,

  958. and so

  959. on.

  960. Two is

  961. about our

  962. health,

  963. sickness and

  964. death.

  965. we worry

  966. about those.

  967. Three is

  968. about

  969. disappointments.

  970. We

  971. struggle with

  972. that.

  973. Things that

  974. we expect

  975. to happen

  976. doesn't

  977. take place,

  978. or people

  979. that we

  980. expect to

  981. behave in

  982. one way

  983. and not.

  984. And so

  985. we have

  986. disappointments

  987. every day.

  988. Four,

  989. relationship

  990. problem.

  991. that's

  992. very common

  993. relationship.

  994. The closer

  995. we are to

  996. someone,

  997. the easier

  998. we get

  999. hurt.

  1000. And day

  1001. to day,

  1002. we struggle

  1003. with that.

  1004. Five is

  1005. religion itself.

  1006. And that is,

  1007. I suppose,

  1008. the main thing

  1009. among the

  1010. Jews,

  1011. Israelites at

  1012. that time.

  1013. To them,

  1014. the law

  1015. is a heavy

  1016. burden.

  1017. They can't

  1018. fulfill it.

  1019. They know

  1020. they have

  1021. to.

  1022. So those

  1023. who think

  1024. that they

  1025. have,

  1026. like the

  1027. Pharisees,

  1028. they become

  1029. proud.

  1030. Those who

  1031. think that

  1032. they couldn't

  1033. do it,

  1034. they become

  1035. despair.

  1036. there.

  1037. So it

  1038. is difficult

  1039. to live

  1040. in this

  1041. world so

  1042. much.

  1043. Burden,

  1044. so much

  1045. restlessness

  1046. in our

  1047. heart.

  1048. But what

  1049. I have just

  1050. mentioned are

  1051. only the

  1052. outer

  1053. wrappings of

  1054. a deeper

  1055. problem in

  1056. our hearts.

  1057. We usually

  1058. try to

  1059. resolve the

  1060. outer

  1061. wrappings,

  1062. blaming others

  1063. for our

  1064. circumstances,

  1065. for our

  1066. struggles.

  1067. We cannot

  1068. see beyond

  1069. these wrappings

  1070. to realize

  1071. that there is

  1072. a deeper

  1073. problem.

  1074. The deeper

  1075. problem is

  1076. that I'm

  1077. a rebel

  1078. against God

  1079. and I'm

  1080. living under

  1081. God's

  1082. judgment.

  1083. If you

  1084. remember

  1085. Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  1086. chapter 3

  1087. when God

  1088. put the

  1089. curse or

  1090. the judgment

  1091. on Adam

  1092. and Eve,

  1093. so both

  1094. Adam and

  1095. Eve would

  1096. go through

  1097. hard times

  1098. in some

  1099. way.

  1100. The woman

  1101. would labor

  1102. for childbirth,

  1103. men would

  1104. labor,

  1105. to produce

  1106. a living.

  1107. That is

  1108. a very

  1109. basic

  1110. problem

  1111. that we

  1112. are facing

  1113. that needs

  1114. first to

  1115. be resolved.

  1116. In God's

  1117. mercy,

  1118. He uncovers

  1119. those or

  1120. remove those

  1121. outer

  1122. wrappings and

  1123. let us see

  1124. what is

  1125. inside our

  1126. hearts.

  1127. When God

  1128. does that,

  1129. we will see

  1130. the wickedness

  1131. and foolishness

  1132. in our

  1133. hearts.

  1134. We will

  1135. realize that

  1136. we are the

  1137. main cause

  1138. of the

  1139. breakdowns of

  1140. relationships.

  1141. of our

  1142. disappointments,

  1143. our lack

  1144. of faith,

  1145. our desire

  1146. to validate

  1147. ourselves.

  1148. We can

  1149. think of

  1150. many,

  1151. many things.

  1152. Why?

  1153. It's not

  1154. other people

  1155. or circumstances

  1156. so much.

  1157. It's more

  1158. our own

  1159. desire and

  1160. expectation

  1161. and our

  1162. selfish,

  1163. self-centeredness.

  1164. It's causing

  1165. a lot of

  1166. the struggles

  1167. that we're

  1168. facing.

  1169. we thank

  1170. God that

  1171. He does

  1172. not leave

  1173. us without

  1174. our way

  1175. out.

  1176. At the

  1177. same time,

  1178. we are

  1179. convicted

  1180. of our

  1181. own

  1182. wickedness

  1183. and

  1184. foolishness.

  1185. God also

  1186. opened our

  1187. eyes to

  1188. see Jesus.

  1189. And we

  1190. see a

  1191. person who

  1192. is pure

  1193. and gentle,

  1194. a person

  1195. who is

  1196. loving and

  1197. just,

  1198. a person

  1199. who is

  1200. humble

  1201. and

  1202. unyielding,

  1203. a person

  1204. who has

  1205. a purpose

  1206. and a

  1207. hope,

  1208. a person

  1209. who has

  1210. no deceit

  1211. and is

  1212. full of

  1213. grace and

  1214. truth.

  1215. A person

  1216. who came

  1217. to the

  1218. world

  1219. without

  1220. any

  1221. wrapping

  1222. of

  1223. physical

  1224. attraction,

  1225. position,

  1226. or

  1227. qualifications,

  1228. a person

  1229. who gave

  1230. up the

  1231. last bit

  1232. of his

  1233. own

  1234. identity

  1235. and

  1236. dignity

  1237. to die

  1238. on the

  1239. cross.

  1240. Do you

  1241. know that?

  1242. To die

  1243. on the

  1244. cross

  1245. is more

  1246. than pain.

  1247. It's

  1248. shame.

  1249. He died

  1250. naked

  1251. publicly.

  1252. So he

  1253. became

  1254. a

  1255. non-entity

  1256. basically.

  1257. He's

  1258. not a

  1259. person

  1260. on the

  1261. cross.

  1262. But he

  1263. gives that

  1264. up too

  1265. so that

  1266. we might

  1267. find

  1268. identity

  1269. and

  1270. dignity

  1271. in him.

  1272. When we

  1273. first see

  1274. Jesus,

  1275. he might

  1276. become

  1277. offensive

  1278. to us.

  1279. I hope

  1280. that he

  1281. does

  1282. in some

  1283. way.

  1284. So

  1285. reflecting

  1286. on why

  1287. he

  1288. believes

  1289. in

  1290. Jesus,

  1291. the

  1292. poet

  1293. W.H.

  1294. Orden

  1295. wrote,

  1296. I

  1297. believe

  1298. because

  1299. he

  1300. fulfills

  1301. none

  1302. of my

  1303. dreams.

  1304. I

  1305. believe

  1306. because

  1307. he

  1308. fulfills

  1309. none

  1310. of my

  1311. dreams.

  1312. Because

  1313. he

  1314. is in

  1315. every

  1316. respect

  1317. the

  1318. opposite

  1319. of what

  1320. he

  1321. would

  1322. be

  1323. if I

  1324. could

  1325. have

  1326. made

  1327. him

  1328. in my

  1329. own

  1330. image.

  1331. Why

  1332. Jesus

  1333. and not

  1334. Socrates

  1335. or Buddha

  1336. or Confucius

  1337. or Muhammad?

  1338. none

  1339. of the

  1340. others

  1341. arose

  1342. all

  1343. sides

  1344. of my

  1345. being

  1346. to cry

  1347. crucify

  1348. him.

  1349. I

  1350. hope

  1351. that

  1352. when we

  1353. see the

  1354. Lord

  1355. Jesus

  1356. Christ

  1357. he's

  1358. offensive

  1359. to us

  1360. in some

  1361. way.

  1362. But

  1363. when he

  1364. does

  1365. that

  1366. to me

  1367. I

  1368. will

  1369. need

  1370. to

  1371. choose

  1372. either

  1373. to

  1374. crucify

  1375. him

  1376. or

  1377. to

  1378. crucify

  1379. me.

  1380. There's

  1381. no

  1382. two

  1383. ways.

  1384. You

  1385. can't

  1386. be

  1387. one

  1388. or

  1389. the

  1390. other

  1391. you

  1392. have

  1393. to

  1394. choose.

  1395. Jesus'

  1396. invitation

  1397. is

  1398. given

  1399. to

  1400. those

  1401. who

  1402. know

  1403. nothing

  1404. good

  1405. dwells

  1406. in

  1407. them.

  1408. To

  1409. those

  1410. who

  1411. have

  1412. seen

  1413. what

  1414. is

  1415. good

  1416. in

  1417. Jesus

  1418. and

  1419. know

  1420. they

  1421. can

  1422. never

  1423. be

  1424. like

  1425. him.

  1426. Paul

  1427. in

  1428. Romans

  1429. 7

  1430. 18

  1431. and

  1432. 19

  1433. said

  1434. For

  1435. I

  1436. have

  1437. decided

  1438. to

  1439. do

  1440. what

  1441. is

  1442. right

  1443. but

  1444. not

  1445. the

  1446. ability

  1447. to

  1448. carry

  1449. out.

  1450. For

  1451. I

  1452. do

  1453. not

  1454. do

  1455. the

  1456. good

  1457. I

  1458. want

  1459. but

  1460. the

  1461. evil

  1462. I

  1463. do

  1464. not

  1465. want

  1466. is

  1467. what

  1468. I

  1469. keep

  1470. on

  1471. doing.

  1472. Jesus'

  1473. invitation

  1474. is like

  1475. a

  1476. present

  1477. with

  1478. no

  1479. wrap.

  1480. There's

  1481. no

  1482. wrap.

  1483. There's

  1484. no

  1485. name

  1486. on

  1487. the

  1488. wrap.

  1489. There's

  1490. no

  1491. name.

  1492. How

  1493. do

  1494. you

  1495. know

  1496. that

  1497. it's

  1498. for

  1499. you?

  1500. You

  1501. know

  1502. the

  1503. present

  1504. is

  1505. for

  1506. you

  1507. when

  1508. your

  1509. eyes

  1510. open

  1511. to

  1512. see

  1513. the

  1514. weakness

  1515. in

  1516. your

  1517. heart

  1518. and

  1519. when

  1520. you

  1521. can

  1522. see

  1523. that

  1524. your

  1525. one

  1526. that

  1527. you

  1528. but

  1529. it

  1530. is

  1531. because

  1532. of

  1533. your

  1534. pride,

  1535. your

  1536. foolishness

  1537. or

  1538. your

  1539. covetousness.

  1540. Jesus'

  1541. invitation

  1542. to

  1543. present

  1544. with

  1545. wrap,

  1546. you

  1547. can

  1548. see

  1549. what

  1550. he

  1551. is

  1552. offering.

  1553. He

  1554. wants

  1555. you

  1556. to

  1557. follow

  1558. him

  1559. and

  1560. not

  1561. your

  1562. own

  1563. ways.

  1564. He

  1565. wants

  1566. you

  1567. to

  1568. seek

  1569. first

  1570. his

  1571. kingdom

  1572. and

  1573. his

  1574. righteousness

  1575. and

  1576. not

  1577. your

  1578. own.

  1579. He

  1580. wants

  1581. you

  1582. to

  1583. accept

  1584. the

  1585. burden

  1586. of

  1587. the

  1588. cross.

  1589. He

  1590. wants

  1591. you

  1592. to

  1593. have

  1594. rest.

  1595. you

  1596. to

  1597. come

  1598. to

  1599. him

  1600. because

  1601. he

  1602. is

  1603. useful

  1604. or

  1605. pitiful.

  1606. Jesus

  1607. wants

  1608. you

  1609. to

  1610. come

  1611. to

  1612. him

  1613. because

  1614. he

  1615. is

  1616. beautiful.

  1617. He

  1618. wants

  1619. to

  1620. give

  1621. you

  1622. his

  1623. beauty.

  1624. He

  1625. wants

  1626. to

  1627. give

  1628. you

  1629. rest.

  1630. When

  1631. we

  1632. see

  1633. that

  1634. there

  1635. is

  1636. nothing

  1637. good

  1638. in

  1639. us

  1640. and

  1641. see

  1642. that

  1643. all

  1644. that

  1645. is

  1646. good

  1647. is

  1648. in

  1649. Jesus,

  1650. Jesus

  1651. is

  1652. then

  1653. inviting

  1654. us

  1655. to

  1656. follow

  1657. him.

  1658. In

  1659. Jesus

  1660. Christ

  1661. we

  1662. will

  1663. receive

  1664. grace

  1665. upon

  1666. grace.

  1667. The

  1668. first

  1669. grace

  1670. helps

  1671. us

  1672. to

  1673. follow

  1674. Jesus

  1675. to

  1676. the

  1677. cross

  1678. nailing

  1679. our

  1680. own

  1681. weakness

  1682. to

  1683. the

  1684. cross.

  1685. The

  1686. second

  1687. grace

  1688. is

  1689. being

  1690. given

  1691. the

  1692. beauty

  1693. of

  1694. Jesus

  1695. Christ.

  1696. God

  1697. can

  1698. look

  1699. at

  1700. us

  1701. and

  1702. see

  1703. a

  1704. beauty

  1705. that

  1706. is

  1707. not

  1708. our

  1709. own.

  1710. We

  1711. can

  1712. come

  1713. before

  1714. God

  1715. and

  1716. relate

  1717. to

  1718. him

  1719. as

  1720. our

  1721. father.

  1722. The

  1723. third

  1724. grace

  1725. is

  1726. being

  1727. given

  1728. the

  1729. Holy

  1730. Spirit

  1731. to

  1732. live

  1733. out

  1734. the

  1735. beauty

  1736. of

  1737. Jesus.

  1738. Yes,

  1739. there

  1740. will

  1741. still

  1742. be

  1743. struggles

  1744. when

  1745. we

  1746. follow

  1747. Jesus,

  1748. a

  1749. different

  1750. kind

  1751. of

  1752. struggle.

  1753. In

  1754. the

  1755. past,

  1756. we

  1757. struggled

  1758. restlessly

  1759. because

  1760. we

  1761. did

  1762. not

  1763. have

  1764. a

  1765. hope,

  1766. we

  1767. did

  1768. not

  1769. have

  1770. any

  1771. vision.

  1772. Now

  1773. we

  1774. struggle

  1775. restfully.

  1776. We

  1777. will

  1778. struggle

  1779. with

  1780. our

  1781. old

  1782. sinful

  1783. nature,

  1784. but

  1785. we

  1786. know

  1787. that

  1788. Jesus

  1789. has

  1790. overcome.

  1791. We

  1792. can

  1793. face

  1794. accusation

  1795. from

  1796. the

  1797. devil

  1798. that

  1799. we

  1800. are

  1801. still

  1802. bad

  1803. inside

  1804. our

  1805. heart.

  1806. We

  1807. can

  1808. answer

  1809. such

  1810. accusation

  1811. by

  1812. saying,

  1813. I

  1814. know

  1815. I

  1816. am

  1817. worse

  1818. than

  1819. you

  1820. think,

  1821. but

  1822. it

  1823. is

  1824. no

  1825. longer

  1826. I

  1827. live.

  1828. It

  1829. is

  1830. Christ

  1831. who

  1832. lives

  1833. in

  1834. me.

  1835. We

  1836. still

  1837. may

  1838. struggle

  1839. with

  1840. broken

  1841. relationship,

  1842. but

  1843. the

  1844. struggle

  1845. is

  1846. not

  1847. to

  1848. vindicate

  1849. ourselves,

  1850. the

  1851. struggle

  1852. is

  1853. to

  1854. love

  1855. others

  1856. like

  1857. Jesus

  1858. did

  1859. to

  1860. us.

  1861. When

  1862. I

  1863. prepared

  1864. for

  1865. this

  1866. sermon,

  1867. I

  1868. have

  1869. some

  1870. difficulty

  1871. deciding

  1872. whether

  1873. the

  1874. title

  1875. of this

  1876. sermon,

  1877. a

  1878. gift

  1879. with

  1880. no

  1881. wrap

  1882. or

  1883. a

  1884. present

  1885. with

  1886. no

  1887. wrap.

  1888. Gift

  1889. sounds

  1890. better,

  1891. but

  1892. I

  1893. choose

  1894. present

  1895. because

  1896. the

  1897. offer

  1898. is

  1899. the

  1900. presence

  1901. of

  1902. a

  1903. person,

  1904. the

  1905. God

  1906. man,

  1907. Jesus

  1908. Christ.

  1909. It

  1910. may

  1911. sound

  1912. kinder

  1913. if I

  1914. tell you

  1915. that it

  1916. is

  1917. okay

  1918. if

  1919. you

  1920. decline

  1921. his

  1922. offer,

  1923. if

  1924. you

  1925. decline

  1926. his

  1927. imitation,

  1928. but

  1929. it's

  1930. not

  1931. really

  1932. kind

  1933. for

  1934. me

  1935. to

  1936. say

  1937. so

  1938. for

  1939. two

  1940. reasons.

  1941. One,

  1942. this

  1943. is

  1944. the

  1945. Do you

  1946. want

  1947. real

  1948. happiness?

  1949. You

  1950. may

  1951. labour

  1952. or

  1953. you

  1954. like

  1955. to

  1956. get

  1957. it.

  1958. You

  1959. can

  1960. never

  1961. find

  1962. it

  1963. unless

  1964. you

  1965. first

  1966. follow

  1967. Jesus

  1968. and

  1969. take

  1970. his

  1971. yoke

  1972. upon

  1973. you.

  1974. Come

  1975. to

  1976. Jesus.

  1977. He

  1978. is

  1979. gentle

  1980. and

  1981. lowly.

  1982. He

  1983. does

  1984. not

  1985. laugh

  1986. at

  1987. our

  1988. foolishness,

  1989. nor

  1990. does

  1991. he

  1992. belittle

  1993. our

  1994. attempt

  1995. to

  1996. be

  1997. good.

  1998. In

  1999. Jesus

  2000. you

  2001. will

  2002. find

  2003. rest

  2004. for

  2005. your

  2006. souls.

  2007. The

  2008. second

  2009. reason

  2010. is

  2011. that

  2012. the

  2013. consequence

  2014. of

  2015. disregarding

  2016. Jesus

  2017. would

  2018. be

  2019. judgment

  2020. for

  2021. our

  2022. wickedness.

  2023. The

  2024. true

  2025. beauty

  2026. will

  2027. ultimately

  2028. overthrow

  2029. all the

  2030. ugliness,

  2031. either by

  2032. turning the

  2033. ugly into

  2034. beauty

  2035. or by

  2036. destroying

  2037. the

  2038. ugly.

  2039. May God

  2040. have mercy

  2041. on us

  2042. and help

  2043. us to

  2044. see beyond

  2045. whatever

  2046. is on

  2047. the

  2048. surface.

  2049. All

  2050. superficial

  2051. attractions,

  2052. positions,

  2053. and

  2054. explanations

  2055. do not

  2056. last

  2057. long.

  2058. Only

  2059. what is

  2060. deep

  2061. inside

  2062. will

  2063. remain

  2064. forever.

  2065. We

  2066. cannot

  2067. change

  2068. what is

  2069. inside

  2070. us,

  2071. but

  2072. Jesus

  2073. can.

  2074. Let's

  2075. pray.

  2076. Father

  2077. God,

  2078. thank

  2079. you for

  2080. knowing

  2081. our

  2082. own

  2083. weakness,

  2084. our

  2085. own

  2086. foolishness,

  2087. our

  2088. own

  2089. rebellion.

  2090. and

  2091. thank you

  2092. for

  2093. also

  2094. knowing

  2095. the

  2096. longings

  2097. of our

  2098. heart,

  2099. our

  2100. longing

  2101. to be

  2102. pure,

  2103. our

  2104. longing

  2105. to be

  2106. accepted,

  2107. our

  2108. longing

  2109. to have

  2110. a purpose

  2111. in life.

  2112. Thank you

  2113. also for

  2114. the invitation

  2115. to life.

  2116. May

  2117. help us

  2118. to do

  2119. so to

  2120. see the

  2121. Lord Jesus

  2122. Christ

  2123. today.

  2124. Thank you,

  2125. Lord.

  2126. We pray in

  2127. Jesus' name.

  2128. Amen.

  2129. Amen.
