    James 1:19–21

  25. Know this, my beloved brothers.

  26. Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger,

  27. or that anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

  28. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness,

  29. and receive with meekness the implanted word which is able to save souls.

  30. Well, good morning, everyone.

  31. Well, you might have noticed already that we're getting into Proverbs,

  32. so we're getting back into our holiday series in wisdom literature,

  33. and we're going to be wrapping up Proverbs.

  34. I don't know if you ever can wrap up Proverbs.

  35. There's so much in it, but we are.

  36. So we've got three more weeks.

  37. This one is on anger, as you can tell.

  38. And next week will be on living wisely in a post-Christian world.

  39. And then we're going to wrap up in Chapter 31,

  40. that elusive woman, the woman of wisdom.

  41. Then in Term 1, we're going to be getting into the Book of Romans

  42. to get into that core foundational truth that we find in Romans,

  43. just to get our orientation right as we head into the new year.

  44. So I hope you're looking forward to that.

  45. Will you pray with me as we get into God's word?

  46. Let's pray together.

  47. Yeah, Lord, if there's any emotion that has led to the destruction

  48. of your image bearers themselves

  49. and to the destruction of relationships

  50. and wreaked havoc in your church

  51. and between husbands and wives and parents and children and friendships,

  52. Lord, anger must be up there, if not the top of the list.

  53. Lord, I pray, I suppose what we just prayed in that song,

  54. that you would give us an undivided heart,

  55. that you would change us, sanctify us that little bit more today.

  56. Lord, we need your word,

  57. not only so that life will go well,

  58. but so that we live in a way that pleases you

  59. and represents you well.

  60. Lord, it's just so lovely that you send the rain

  61. and just refreshes the earth,

  62. like you give us that picture in Isaiah.

  63. I pray that your word would send it.

  64. May it fall down and wash our hearts this morning,

  65. that we might be slow to anger like you are.

  66. In Jesus' name I pray.

  67. Amen.

  68. Well, to get into this,

  69. I'm going to borrow a very ordinary situation story

  70. from a book by Larry Crabb.

  71. Now, the technology,

  72. you understand once I say the story,

  73. but the technology you might need to update a little bit,

  74. but I think we can all still resonate with the situation

  75. and I think we can apply it.

  76. It's a husband and wife situation,

  77. but we can apply it to any relationship, I think.

  78. So, the wife retells what happened.

  79. So, this is her words.

  80. We each had really bad days

  81. and all we wanted to do was relax in front of the TV.

  82. As soon as we both were settled and comfortable,

  83. the phone rang.

  84. Neither of us moved.

  85. After about three rings,

  86. my husband said in the most tired voice,

  87. Honey, could you get it?

  88. Well, I immediately felt irritated.

  89. I knew he was going to ask me to get up.

  90. I was tired too,

  91. and I felt like I'm always the one who waits on him.

  92. So, I said,

  93. I just got comfortable.

  94. I wish you'd get it this time.

  95. Well, you would have thought

  96. I asked him to run to the store at midnight.

  97. He stared at me for a second with utter disgust.

  98. Then he got up.

  99. By the time he got there,

  100. the phone had stopped.

  101. We barely said a word to each other

  102. the rest of the evening.

  103. That's the story.

  104. Now, I've picked this story

  105. to lead into this topic for a few reasons.

  106. You might be on the receiving end

  107. of some very destructive anger,

  108. whether verbally or physically.

  109. It could be criminal.

  110. And that's not okay.

  111. And there's people to help.

  112. There's pastors, there's psychologists,

  113. there's police.

  114. My focus today, though,

  115. is on anger at the level of that story.

  116. The kind of everyday anger

  117. that we all feel in every relationship,

  118. nearly every day.

  119. So, I just want that story to be a picture

  120. of kind of the scope

  121. of what we're trying to cover today.

  122. Another reason for...

  123. I like this story

  124. is to hopefully hold up something of a mirror

  125. in case you don't think you're an angry person.

  126. It's such a small situation,

  127. like a phone ringing.

  128. You just want to both relax.

  129. There's politeness in the words.

  130. Honey, I'm comfortable.

  131. Can't you do it this time?

  132. Like, it's polite.

  133. It's civil.

  134. And yet you can feel the hurt.

  135. You can feel the anger in the room.

  136. It's the silence.

  137. It's the stare of the eyes.

  138. It's seething inside,

  139. but not actually expressing what you're feeling.

  140. And it destroyed the freedom of that relationship,

  141. at least for the rest of the evening.

  142. And if it was a pattern of relating,

  143. who knows what else it would destroy.

  144. It's such a simple thing,

  145. and that's why I find it so powerful.

  146. Anger is destructive,

  147. and I think we're all angry people.

  148. I'm still learning to express my anger in constructive ways.

  149. Like, I used to...

  150. Not that Emma would ever do anything to cause me to be upset,

  151. but I used to...

  152. I would be passive-aggressive towards her

  153. and try the silent treatment

  154. and being short in my replies and avoiding her.

  155. And there was just one problem.

  156. She had no idea that I was upset,

  157. and it just didn't work.

  158. If you're down the passive-aggressive end of the spectrum of anger like I am,

  159. just stop for a second and think about what you're doing.

  160. You hurt me,

  161. so I will try and hurt you by withdrawing my love from you.

  162. That's brutal.

  163. It's destructive.

  164. I'm probably saying that harsher

  165. because I'm talking to myself there.

  166. We all have a problem with anger.

  167. And it seems to be a growing problem with this pandemic.

  168. Bo Wong shared an article with me,

  169. A Nation on Hold Wants to Speak to the Manager.

  170. Many customer relation jobs are just...

  171. They're fed up of the anger of customers recently,

  172. especially on airlines and in supermarkets

  173. and in restaurants and things.

  174. People get angry over masks.

  175. I think there's one employee sums it up,

  176. saying,

  177. Have you seen a man in his 60s have a temper tantrum

  178. because we don't have the expensive imported cheese he wants?

  179. A man in his 60s at Woolies

  180. having a temper tantrum in the middle of the aisle.

  181. You're looking at someone and thinking,

  182. I don't think this is about the cheese.

  183. That's the state of our society at the moment.

  184. In our relationships, in our society,

  185. there's an anger problem.

  186. But then, is it a problem?

  187. Have you found it's common to hear at the moment

  188. that expressing anger is a good thing?

  189. I'm being authentic.

  190. I'm being real.

  191. I'm wearing my heart on my sleeve.

  192. I'm being myself.

  193. People need to accept me

  194. and acknowledge my feelings,

  195. acknowledge the hurt that's been done to me.

  196. Being authentic and venting your anger

  197. avoids bottling it up

  198. so that it doesn't explode in more destructive ways.

  199. People aren't in the dark about what you're thinking.

  200. You've just laid it bare.

  201. And shouldn't you stand up for yourself

  202. and defend yourself?

  203. Our world is kind of saying at the moment

  204. that anger is good.

  205. As we get into God's word,

  206. we're going to see that God gives us a better way,

  207. a better way to live.

  208. That's what we always find in God's word.

  209. He has a better way

  210. than authentically venting your anger.

  211. One of the main things he says again and again is,

  212. I don't know if you picked it up

  213. as it was being read out,

  214. be slow to anger.

  215. So Proverbs 19.11.

  216. Good sense makes one slow to anger

  217. and it is his glory to overlook an offence.

  218. And again, Proverbs 29.11.

  219. A fool gives full vent to his spirit,

  220. but a wise man quietly holds it back.

  221. Notice in these that the offence is felt,

  222. the offence occurred.

  223. You may well arrive at anger,

  224. but be slow to it.

  225. Good sense, God says,

  226. isn't showcasing your anger right away,

  227. but good sense, you'll be slow to anger.

  228. And that got me thinking, like, why?

  229. Why is that?

  230. Because the times I've tried to be slow to anger,

  231. like I've already said,

  232. it often just comes out in more destructive ways later.

  233. It's not like delaying it makes it go away.

  234. Not all the time.

  235. Maybe if it's a tiny thing, it does.

  236. So why be slow to anger?

  237. I think there's four reasons,

  238. and I hope to step us through it.

  239. There might be more reasons,

  240. but let's go through these four.

  241. I think the first reason we should be slow to anger

  242. and not just authentically blowing our top off

  243. whenever we're angry

  244. is to prevent the relational carnage that anger causes.

  245. So Proverbs 29, 22.

  246. A man, a person of wrath,

  247. stirs up strife,

  248. and one given to anger causes much transgression.

  249. So the feeling of anger isn't wrong,

  250. but letting your anger take control of you

  251. to then lead to wrong choices

  252. that do damage to relationships,

  253. that's the problem.

  254. Someone described anger,

  255. someone I read this week,

  256. described anger as a gateway drug

  257. to many other sins.

  258. Just spend a moment and reflect

  259. on words and actions that you regret.

  260. What words do you regret recently?

  261. Or maybe in the past, I don't know.

  262. How many of those were prompted by your anger?

  263. That harsh word,

  264. the emotional payback,

  265. making that person feel scared,

  266. making that person feel small,

  267. making them feel unwanted,

  268. retaliating, hurt for hurt,

  269. like a tennis match.

  270. What's the cost?

  271. It's not easy to take words back, is it?

  272. Do you notice the trust that takes weeks

  273. and months and years to build

  274. is just torn down so quickly

  275. with those harsh words?

  276. The cost of cooperation,

  277. the cost of,

  278. like that story of the husband and wife,

  279. of being relaxed in each other's presence,

  280. the loss of intimacy.

  281. There's a cost to the honour of God.

  282. There's a big cost.

  283. There's a relational cost.

  284. And that's a pretty good reason

  285. to just pause in our anger

  286. before just letting fly.

  287. And it's not just damaging to other people.

  288. It's actually damaging to ourselves.

  289. So Proverbs 19, 19,

  290. a man of great wrath will pay the penalty.

  291. For if you deliver him,

  292. you will only have to do it again.

  293. I think this is talking about

  294. the natural consequences of my anger,

  295. your anger.

  296. If you're quick to lose your temper,

  297. others will lower their trust in you.

  298. They'll learn to manage you

  299. rather than feel safe with you.

  300. They'll learn to fear you

  301. rather than trust you.

  302. There's a cost to you.

  303. There's consequences.

  304. It may just be in certain situations.

  305. It's like,

  306. don't raise that topic with that person.

  307. Like, you'll get an earful.

  308. Or maybe it's just,

  309. generally,

  310. people will lose respect and trust,

  311. cooperation with you.

  312. So there's a cost.

  313. Relationally,

  314. there's a cost to you.

  315. There's consequences.

  316. So let's be slow to anger

  317. for relationship's sake.

  318. And as Christians,

  319. we should be slow

  320. for God's reputation's sake.

  321. I think a second reason

  322. to be slow to anger

  323. is to work out

  324. whether or not

  325. I should be angry.

  326. Should you be angry?

  327. We think that it's the situation itself

  328. that makes us angry,

  329. but that's not good sense.

  330. You need time to look inside yourself

  331. to see,

  332. why am I angry in this moment?

  333. First, we need to understand

  334. what anger is.

  335. I've found two descriptions helpful.

  336. One is,

  337. anger is a blocked goal,

  338. and I'll give a description of that

  339. in a moment.

  340. So you have a goal,

  341. it's been blocked,

  342. that produces anger.

  343. A second,

  344. which I heard in a talk years ago

  345. and it stuck with me,

  346. is that anger is personal hurt

  347. wrapped in barbed wire.

  348. I just thought it was a good image.

  349. It's like,

  350. you're hurt,

  351. and so you intentionally

  352. wrap that hurt in barbed wire

  353. and kind of throw it back.

  354. That image has stuck with me.

  355. So going back to the blocked goal.

  356. So in a TED Talk,

  357. a psychologist describes anger.

  358. If you're going to visually imagine

  359. what's going on inside you,

  360. it looks a lot like driving on the roads,

  361. which is probably why there's

  362. road rage all the time.

  363. So just imagine,

  364. each person is in their car

  365. and we're driving on the same space,

  366. interacting,

  367. and when you're driving,

  368. you have a goal.

  369. You have a destination

  370. you're trying to get to.

  371. But imagine someone cuts into your lane,

  372. slows down,

  373. and then makes you

  374. miss that green light

  375. and you have to stop

  376. and wait a couple minutes

  377. for the light to go green again.

  378. Your goal has been blocked.

  379. Producing anger.

  380. Well, not necessarily.

  381. Imagine it's a Sunday afternoon.

  382. Yes, you want to get home,

  383. but you've got no deadline.

  384. Would you be angry?

  385. Maybe if you felt like your rights

  386. have been impinged or something,

  387. but if you didn't care about that,

  388. you don't have to respond in anger.

  389. What is more important

  390. is what's going on inside your car,

  391. if I can use that expression.

  392. That will be the critical thing

  393. of whether you get angry or not.

  394. Imagine if that person cut in front of you

  395. and you're on the way to a job interview

  396. and you're already running late,

  397. you're financially under pressure,

  398. you need this job,

  399. you need it to look after your family,

  400. your reputation is going to be impacted

  401. because you're going to be even later

  402. to the job interview,

  403. then that person cutting in,

  404. oh, it is unforgivable.

  405. It's punishable.

  406. Do you see the difference?

  407. It's the same external situation

  408. and yet what's happening inside your car

  409. makes all the difference

  410. about whether you get angry or not.

  411. Going back to that article Beau shared,

  412. someone described the increasing anger in society.

  413. I think they were on the money

  414. when they said it like this.

  415. That waiter at the restaurant,

  416. that flight attendant,

  417. they become a stand-in

  418. for everything coming between

  419. what we experience

  420. and what we think we're entitled to.

  421. They're blocking our goal

  422. of what we're entitled to, in other words.

  423. And so they just cop it.

  424. If you just authentically fly off the handle,

  425. you haven't taken the time

  426. to work out what's causing your anger.

  427. More often than not,

  428. I find it's what's inside my car,

  429. inside my heart,

  430. my thinking,

  431. that's causing the anger,

  432. not the external circumstances.

  433. So we need to be slow to anger

  434. to work out what goal is being blocked.

  435. Is it my goal

  436. or is it the Lord's goal?

  437. So,

  438. is it my reputation

  439. and expectations,

  440. entitlements,

  441. that's being blocked?

  442. Let me give a personal example for this one.

  443. There's always a danger in personal examples.

  444. I don't want to make it about myself,

  445. but I think it will illustrate it.

  446. And hopefully you can think about

  447. what you're feeling at the moment.

  448. I've used this illustration

  449. way too much recently,

  450. but I'll use it again.

  451. Samuel's sleep.

  452. I've been quick to anger recently.

  453. I told Emma what the topic was this week

  454. and she laughed,

  455. just knowing the irony of it

  456. and God's grace in it as well.

  457. I've been quick to anger.

  458. Sam is still not sleeping well.

  459. We've tried a whole bunch of things.

  460. But,

  461. now you think,

  462. the goal is clear,

  463. I want a good night's rest.

  464. It's happening to me.

  465. I'm not the cause of it.

  466. It's happening to me.

  467. But does that mean I have to get angry?

  468. Do I have a choice?

  469. Looking inside the car,

  470. I need to understand

  471. my deeper goal.

  472. Why do I think

  473. I'm entitled

  474. to a good night's sleep?

  475. I've been reflecting on it

  476. and let me just

  477. share what I think my goal is

  478. at the moment.

  479. I think it's something like this.

  480. I want to be competent

  481. in my responsibilities as a man

  482. and I want to be seen

  483. to be competent

  484. and I need sleep to do that.

  485. I think it's something like that

  486. going on for me at the moment.

  487. And Sam is blocking that goal.

  488. But it's not him causing the anger.

  489. It's that goal which is wrong

  490. that's causing the anger.

  491. Or that thinking I'm entitled to sleep

  492. or that God demands

  493. that I need sleep to achieve that.

  494. So I think James 4.

  495. I don't think I'm making this up.

  496. I think it's in James 4, 1-4.

  497. What causes quarrels

  498. and what causes fights among you?

  499. Is it not this?

  500. That your passions are at war within you.

  501. You desire and do not have

  502. so you murder.

  503. You covet and cannot obtain

  504. so you fight and quarrel.

  505. You do not have

  506. because you do not ask.

  507. You do not receive

  508. because you ask wrongly

  509. to spend it on your own passions.

  510. So when we feel anger

  511. we want to rush in

  512. and presume the offender is guilty

  513. and deserves punishment.

  514. But wisdom tells us to pause

  515. and check your own heart.

  516. Check what's in the car.

  517. What's under the hood.

  518. Check for the idols in our heart.

  519. The good things you believe

  520. you are entitled to

  521. and must have.

  522. So what have you been angry about lately?

  523. You might want to write it down

  524. if you're taking notes.

  525. What have you been angry about lately?

  526. Check what's under the hood.

  527. What goal is there?

  528. The deeper goal.

  529. What goal is there?

  530. What is it about your sense of person,

  531. your reputation

  532. that you feel is being threatened?

  533. What do you think you're entitled to?

  534. Let's be slow to anger

  535. and examine ourselves.

  536. And if you find like me

  537. that more often than not

  538. there's some idol lurking there,

  539. confess it to God.

  540. Confess it to the person

  541. you've been angry to

  542. and tweak your goal.

  543. Maybe the goal is okay

  544. but it's just out of order.

  545. It's not in its proper order.

  546. So what if you find,

  547. after examining,

  548. what if you find that your goal

  549. isn't your own making?

  550. What if it is primarily

  551. the Lord's reputation

  552. that has been damaged

  553. and you're angry about that?

  554. What if it's his expectations,

  555. what he is entitled to

  556. that has been crossed?

  557. Well, I think talking like this

  558. helps us affirm

  559. that there is good things

  560. to be angry about.

  561. But let's hear Proverbs 20, 22

  562. for advice from the Lord

  563. of what to do in that situation.

  564. Do not say,

  565. I will repay evil.

  566. Wait for the Lord

  567. and he will deliver you.

  568. So there is such a thing as evil.

  569. I think we call it

  570. in Christian circles

  571. righteous anger.

  572. Now I want to pause at that point

  573. and go,

  574. if by righteous anger

  575. you mean that you believe

  576. something is wrong

  577. in its own right

  578. and therefore you are entitled

  579. to be angry,

  580. I can't see anything Christian

  581. about that definition

  582. of righteous anger.

  583. Everyone thinks that way.

  584. If you think it's wrong

  585. and therefore you're entitled

  586. to be angry.

  587. I don't think that's a good

  588. enough definition.

  589. If you mean by righteous anger

  590. that what is being done

  591. is against God's will

  592. and his name

  593. and reputation

  594. is being injured,

  595. his purposes

  596. are being blocked,

  597. of course the Lord

  598. is sovereign over those

  599. but if that's what you mean

  600. then okay,

  601. there is such a thing

  602. as righteous anger.

  603. Jesus was angry.

  604. You read the Gospels

  605. and there was times

  606. where he was angry

  607. but he was angry

  608. because

  609. the glory

  610. belonging to God

  611. was not being given

  612. to God.

  613. I suspect

  614. we don't feel

  615. this kind of anger

  616. nearly enough.

  617. I could be wrong

  618. about that

  619. but I suspect

  620. that's our problem.

  621. Maybe we should be

  622. more angry.

  623. I think

  624. for righteous anger

  625. we're on safer grounds

  626. when we're feeling it

  627. on behalf of others

  628. and especially those

  629. who are vulnerable.

  630. people.

  631. The other thing

  632. this proverb

  633. teaches us

  634. is that he promises

  635. to deliver us

  636. in the end.

  637. To take the matter

  638. into our own hands

  639. to get justice

  640. right now

  641. is to take

  642. the moral high ground

  643. that only the Lord

  644. is entitled to.

  645. So have you ever said

  646. or thought

  647. about a person

  648. I would never do

  649. what they did?

  650. That's taking

  651. the moral high ground.

  652. Only the Lord

  653. knows precisely

  654. what someone deserves.

  655. Only he can see

  656. people's heart

  657. perfectly.

  658. And only the Lord

  659. is completely holy

  660. and can say

  661. I would never do

  662. what they did.

  663. I think we should

  664. care deeply

  665. about evil.

  666. Don't get me wrong.

  667. We should care

  668. deeply about evil

  669. when God's reputation

  670. is at stake.

  671. But vengeance

  672. isn't ours.

  673. It belongs to him.

  674. He's the judge

  675. and he calls us

  676. to love our enemies

  677. and wait

  678. for his deliverance.

  679. So either way

  680. when we look

  681. in our own car

  682. under our own hood

  683. and see what goal

  684. is being blocked

  685. either way

  686. if it's the idols

  687. of our heart

  688. or if it's

  689. the Lord's name

  690. and his expectations

  691. being blocked

  692. either way

  693. the remedy

  694. I think is the same

  695. and that's what we find

  696. in James chapter 1.

    James 1 chapter mention

  697. I don't think

  698. the remedy

  699. is Buddhist

  700. meditation

  701. trying to remove

  702. all desire

  703. nor is it

  704. taking God's place

  705. as judge

  706. of right and wrong

  707. and quickly showing

  708. how authentically

  709. foolish you are.

  710. We find the solution

  711. in James chapter 1

    James 1 chapter mention

  712. that we are given

  713. the resources

  714. if we belong

  715. to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  716. The resources

  717. to deal with our anger

  718. isn't out there.

  719. We don't have to say

  720. it's implanted

  721. in us

  722. that we're going

  723. to find.

  724. So James chapter 1

    James 1 chapter mention

  725. Know this

  726. my beloved

  727. brothers

  728. and sisters.

  729. I just want

  730. to pause there

  731. because

  732. at first reading

  733. of this

  734. I skipped over it

  735. but there's a very

  736. important word there

  737. beloved.

  738. We are beloved

  739. by the Lord

  740. if you are in

  741. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  742. Put that alongside

  743. what God is about

  744. to say.

  745. Let every person

  746. be quick to hear

  747. slow to speak

  748. slow to anger

  749. for the anger

  750. of man does not

  751. produce the

  752. righteousness of God

  753. therefore put away

  754. all filthiness

  755. and rampant

  756. out of control

  757. wickedness

  758. the Lord

  759. knows the

  760. unlovely things

  761. in our heart

  762. and he knows

  763. the unlovely things

  764. we do because

  765. of our anger

  766. and yet

  767. he calls us

  768. beloved.

  769. How is that

  770. possible?

  771. We're to put

  772. those ugly things

  773. away and receive

  774. with meekness

  775. with gentleness

  776. humility

  777. the implanted

  778. word which is

  779. able to save

  780. your souls.

  781. I think this is

  782. the word of the

  783. gospel of the

  784. Lord Jesus

  785. the one who

  786. had every right

  787. to be angry

  788. wrathful

  789. at my

  790. self-defending

  791. idolatrous

  792. anger

  793. he chose

  794. to make me

  795. his beloved

  796. and he did it

  797. through costly

  798. love

  799. rather than

  800. punishing

  801. or threatening.

  802. so whether I

  803. find inside

  804. goals of my

  805. own making

  806. idols that

  807. are creating

  808. this anger

  809. it's this

  810. implanted word

  811. that I need

  812. I need the

  813. word of the

  814. gospel

  815. but what

  816. reputation

  817. is greater

  818. than I am

  819. beloved

  820. by the Lord

  821. you will not

  822. find a better

  823. reputation

  824. a better name

  825. for yourself

  826. whether people

  827. acknowledge or not

  828. it doesn't

  829. matter

  830. and what can I

  831. be entitled

  832. to if he is

  833. Lord

  834. I'm not

  835. what can I

  836. be entitled

  837. to if

  838. everything I

  839. have is by

  840. his grace

  841. so if it's

  842. the idols

  843. of your heart

  844. producing the

  845. anger

  846. it's this

  847. implanted word

  848. we need

  849. and if it is

  850. righteous goals

  851. that you're angry

  852. about

  853. he gives us

  854. the example

  855. to follow

  856. he chose

  857. not to attack

  858. the person

  859. but to

  860. attack the

  861. person's sin

  862. through costly

  863. love

  864. so either way

  865. it's the word

  866. of the gospel

  867. that puts our

  868. goals in

  869. order

  870. we don't

  871. have to

  872. defend

  873. ourselves

  874. but we

  875. can choose

  876. to respond

  877. with love

  878. this is at

  879. the very

  880. heart of

  881. the God

  882. we worship

  883. Moses saw

  884. this on

  885. the mountain

  886. when God

  887. passed in

  888. front of him

  889. declaring his

  890. glory

  891. so do you

  892. remember

  893. Exodus 34

  894. the Lord

  895. the Lord

  896. a God

  897. merciful and

  898. gracious

  899. slow

  900. to anger

  901. this is at

  902. the heart

  903. of the

  904. God

  905. we worship

  906. slow to

  907. anger

  908. and abounding

  909. in steadfast

  910. love and

  911. faithfulness

  912. what Moses

  913. saw being

  914. declared

  915. was embodied

  916. perfectly

  917. by the Lord

  918. Jesus

  919. his son

  920. so 1 Peter 2

  921. is a

  922. lovely

  923. description

  924. of it

  925. when Jesus

  926. when he was

  927. reviled

  928. he did not

  929. revile in

  930. return

  931. when he

  932. suffered

  933. he did

  934. not

  935. threaten

  936. but

  937. continued

  938. entrusting

  939. himself

  940. to him

  941. who judges

  942. justly

  943. he himself

  944. bore our

  945. sins in

  946. his body

  947. on the tree

  948. that we

  949. might die

  950. to sin

  951. and live

  952. for righteousness

  953. by his

  954. wounds

  955. you have

  956. been healed

  957. for you

  958. were straying

  959. like sheep

  960. but have

  961. now returned

  962. the shepherd

  963. and overseer

  964. of your

  965. souls

  966. aren't you

  967. so glad

  968. if you

  969. just

  970. like

  971. all my

  972. sin

  973. I probably

  974. know

  975. like

  976. just the

  977. tip

  978. of the

  979. iceberg

  980. aren't you

  981. so glad

  982. that God

  983. is a God

  984. who is

  985. slow

  986. to anger

  987. so slow

  988. he even

  989. took

  990. my sin

  991. upon himself

  992. to deal

  993. with

  994. the gap

  995. between

  996. our relationship

  997. I'll never

  998. taste a drop

  999. of his

  1000. eternal

  1001. anger

  1002. discipline

  1003. yes

  1004. but he only

  1005. disciplines

  1006. those he

  1007. loves

  1008. we will

  1009. never

  1010. taste a drop

  1011. of his

  1012. anger

  1013. he is

  1014. slow

  1015. to anger

  1016. if we

  1017. don't

  1018. worship

  1019. this

  1020. in our

  1021. God

  1022. then

  1023. you

  1024. can't

  1025. produce

  1026. it

  1027. any

  1028. other

  1029. way

  1030. I

  1031. don't

  1032. think

  1033. this

  1034. slow

  1035. to anger

  1036. God

  1037. calls us

  1038. to bring

  1039. glory

  1040. to his

  1041. reputation

  1042. by being

  1043. like him

  1044. and we

  1045. can only

  1046. do that

  1047. by accepting

  1048. that implanted

  1049. word of the

  1050. gospel

  1051. that he

  1052. conquered

  1053. our sinful

  1054. anger

  1055. through

  1056. his costly

  1057. love

  1058. so I just

  1059. want to finish

  1060. with some

  1061. proverbs

  1062. that give us

  1063. some concrete

  1064. examples of

  1065. how we can

  1066. honour the

  1067. Lord in

  1068. responding

  1069. with love

  1070. rather than

  1071. out of control

  1072. anger

  1073. firstly we can

  1074. love those who

  1075. are angry at

  1076. us

  1077. by not

  1078. retaliating

  1079. but

  1080. responding

  1081. with calm

  1082. and gentle

  1083. words

  1084. so Don

  1085. helped us

  1086. and the

  1087. children

  1088. understand

  1089. this one

  1090. 15

  1091. one

  1092. a soft

  1093. answer

  1094. turns away

  1095. wrath

  1096. but a

  1097. harsh word

  1098. stirs up

  1099. anger

  1100. just because

  1101. someone is

  1102. engaging

  1103. with hostility

  1104. even if it's

  1105. passive aggressive

  1106. hostility

  1107. we don't have

  1108. to respond

  1109. in kind

  1110. if we are

  1111. trusting that

  1112. we are safe

  1113. in Christ

  1114. we don't have

  1115. to respond

  1116. like that

  1117. I think the

  1118. second advice

  1119. that proverbs

  1120. gives us

  1121. guidance

  1122. is that

  1123. we are called

  1124. not just to

  1125. control our

  1126. anger

  1127. or to express

  1128. our anger

  1129. in constructive

  1130. ways but to

  1131. positively love

  1132. the person

  1133. in return

  1134. so

  1135. proverbs

  1136. 10

  1137. 12

  1138. hatred

  1139. stirs up

  1140. strife

  1141. but love

  1142. covers all

  1143. offences

  1144. now that

  1145. word covers

  1146. it's not

  1147. saying covers

  1148. up

  1149. it's not

  1150. just cover

  1151. up anything

  1152. anyone's done

  1153. wrong

  1154. I think it's

  1155. the opposite

  1156. of stripping

  1157. them

  1158. isn't that

  1159. what anger

  1160. tries to do

  1161. anger

  1162. wrapped in

  1163. barbed wire

  1164. you're trying

  1165. to strip

  1166. that person

  1167. of

  1168. I don't

  1169. know

  1170. of their

  1171. reputation

  1172. of

  1173. what they

  1174. want

  1175. but love

  1176. covers up

  1177. it serves

  1178. it sees

  1179. them in the

  1180. best possible

  1181. light

  1182. it serves

  1183. their interests

  1184. their real

  1185. interests

  1186. not necessarily

  1187. their immediate

  1188. interests

  1189. it seeks

  1190. their good

  1191. love covers

  1192. up offences

  1193. and it

  1194. doesn't take

  1195. much for

  1196. one soft

  1197. word

  1198. one act

  1199. of love

  1200. to just

  1201. turn

  1202. a relationship

  1203. have you

  1204. found that

  1205. you're in

  1206. an argument

  1207. and it

  1208. doesn't

  1209. take much

  1210. the Lord

  1211. calls us

  1212. to be

  1213. the one

  1214. to initiate

  1215. that

  1216. and then

  1217. Proverbs

  1218. 25

  1219. 21 to

  1220. 22

  1221. if your

  1222. enemy

  1223. is hungry

  1224. give him

  1225. bread

  1226. to eat

  1227. if he's

  1228. thirsty

  1229. give him

  1230. water

  1231. to drink

  1232. for you

  1233. will heap

  1234. burning

  1235. coals

  1236. on his

  1237. head

  1238. and the

  1239. Lord

  1240. will reward

  1241. you

  1242. sounds like

  1243. the goal

  1244. is to

  1245. inflict

  1246. pain

  1247. but

  1248. I don't

  1249. think so

  1250. it's not

  1251. going

  1252. I'm better

  1253. than you

  1254. by serving

  1255. you

  1256. it's going

  1257. I'm not

  1258. going to

  1259. engage

  1260. the way

  1261. you are

  1262. in this

  1263. hostility

  1264. I'm going

  1265. to serve

  1266. you

  1267. and do

  1268. you know

  1269. what that

  1270. does to

  1271. the person

  1272. it doesn't

  1273. annoy you

  1274. when you

  1275. just want

  1276. to be mean

  1277. to someone

  1278. but they

  1279. keep being

  1280. nice to

  1281. you

  1282. it convicts

  1283. you

  1284. doesn't

  1285. it

  1286. I think

  1287. that's

  1288. what it's

  1289. talking about

  1290. the answer

  1291. to the

  1292. destructiveness

  1293. of anger

  1294. is to

  1295. serve

  1296. and that

  1297. actually

  1298. will help

  1299. that person

  1300. be convicted

  1301. before the

  1302. Lord

  1303. so

  1304. I just

  1305. want to

  1306. finish up

  1307. by saying

  1308. do you

  1309. know

  1310. what I

  1311. think

  1312. is way

  1313. better

  1314. than

  1315. authentically

  1316. just

  1317. blowing

  1318. your top

  1319. off

  1320. anger

  1321. like

  1322. that's

  1323. what our

  1324. world

  1325. says

  1326. to do

  1327. with

  1328. anger

  1329. do you

  1330. know

  1331. what's

  1332. better

  1333. than

  1334. that

  1335. I

  1336. think

  1337. what's

  1338. better

  1339. is

  1340. that

  1341. we

  1342. can

  1343. authentically

  1344. display

  1345. the

  1346. character

  1347. of

  1348. our

  1349. slow

  1350. to

  1351. anger

  1352. God

  1353. by

  1354. trusting

  1355. Jesus

  1356. costly

  1357. love

  1358. for

  1359. us

  1360. you

  1361. can

  1362. just

  1363. authentically

  1364. blow

  1365. your top

  1366. off

  1367. or you

  1368. can

  1369. authentically

  1370. display

  1371. the

  1372. God

  1373. who

  1374. is

  1375. slow

  1376. to

  1377. anger

  1378. and

  1379. and

  1380. and that

  1381. will

  1382. please

  1383. him

  1384. that

  1385. will

  1386. help

  1387. the

  1388. people

  1389. you're

  1390. engaging

  1391. with

  1392. may

  1393. God

  1394. help

  1395. us

  1396. with

  1397. that

  1398. let me

  1399. pray

  1400. and ask

  1401. for that

  1402. help

  1403. let's pray

  1404. Lord

  1405. cause

  1406. us

  1407. to

  1408. worship

  1409. you

  1410. because

  1411. you

  1412. are

  1413. slow

  1414. to

  1415. anger

  1416. your

  1417. patience

  1418. I

  1419. think

  1420. it's

  1421. underrated

  1422. your

  1423. patience

  1424. with us

  1425. is

  1426. incredible

  1427. that you

  1428. convict us

  1429. of our

  1430. sin

  1431. that you

  1432. don't

  1433. wipe us

  1434. out

  1435. immediately

  1436. even though

  1437. you alone

  1438. are entitled

  1439. to

  1440. that you

  1441. even

  1442. took

  1443. the thing

  1444. that offended

  1445. you

  1446. you wore

  1447. it yourself

  1448. you took

  1449. it yourself

  1450. so that

  1451. we could

  1452. know that

  1453. we are

  1454. beloved by

  1455. you

  1456. it is

  1457. incredible

  1458. slowness

  1459. to anger

  1460. forgive us

  1461. for when we

  1462. think that

  1463. you fly

  1464. off the

  1465. handle

  1466. you were

  1467. not like

  1468. that

  1469. please

  1470. change

  1471. our

  1472. image

  1473. of you

  1474. if we're

  1475. thinking

  1476. that

  1477. and Lord

  1478. help us

  1479. to relate

  1480. in the

  1481. church

  1482. in our

  1483. families

  1484. at work

  1485. places

  1486. friendships

  1487. Lord

  1488. please help

  1489. us to

  1490. honour you

  1491. by being

  1492. slow

  1493. to anger

  1494. help us

  1495. to see

  1496. the idols

  1497. of our

  1498. heart

  1499. and confess

  1500. it

  1501. and help

  1502. us to

  1503. worship you

  1504. in Jesus

  1505. name I

  1506. pray

  1507. Amen
