  1. Romans chapter 1, verses 1 to 17.

    Romans 1:1–17

  2. Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God,

  3. which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures,

  4. concerning his son, who was descended from David according to the flesh,

  5. and was declared to be the son of God in power according to the spirit of holiness,

  6. by his resurrection from the dead.

  7. Jesus Christ, our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship

  8. to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations,

  9. including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

  10. To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints,

  11. grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  12. Firstly, I thank God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world.

  13. For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his son,

  14. that without ceasing I mention you always in my prayers,

  15. asking that somehow by God's will I may know, I may now at last succeed in coming to you.

  16. For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you,

  17. that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine.

  18. I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I have often intended to come to you,

  19. but thus far have been prevented, in order that I may reap some harvest among you,

  20. as well as among the rest of the Gentiles.

  21. I am under obligation, both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish,

  22. so I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

  23. For I am not ashamed of the gospel.

  24. It is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,

  25. to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  26. For in it, the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith.

  27. As it is written, the righteous shall live by faith.

  28. Well, the question I want to put in your mind this morning to get your thinking juices going

  29. is a very simple one, and we'll end with it as well.

  30. What is God like?

  31. What is God like?

  32. Now, that question is a question that every person asks and answers at some point in their lifetime.

  33. Every person.

  34. Of course, some decide, haven't asked the question and answer it by deciding that God doesn't even exist.

  35. So, there comes a conclusion, our vast universe,

  36. life itself, from the biggest point down to the most detailed experience of our own personal existence,

  37. is simply the product of natural forces.

  38. And yet, I found it really interesting that people who decide that

  39. often still speak of spiritual experience.

  40. When they engage with nature, for instance.

  41. And so, simply deciding God doesn't exist doesn't seem to close out their craving for something spiritual.

  42. Most, of course, decide that God is real.

  43. And I think people decide that it's because people need a beating heart,

  44. something real, something personal at the center of our universe.

  45. And these people, generally, are openly religious people.

  46. Some, of course, then, there's subdivisions in there.

  47. Some are driven by their own sort of warm, fuzzy feelings.

  48. And so, they decide that God is like an indulgent grandfather,

  49. or a best buddy type figure.

  50. He's the one who always thinks you're special.

  51. It doesn't matter what you do.

  52. He's the one who will always accept you,

  53. and just be happy to hang out with you.

  54. No rules, no demands.

  55. Just spoils you, just like that indulgent grandfather.

  56. Even though he might be thinking about different things inside.

  57. Others are driven by a deep-seated fear.

  58. Fear of death.

  59. A fear of standing before God's justice.

  60. Fear of being rejected by God.

  61. The God they believe in is somewhere out there.

  62. And oftentimes, they decide that God is something akin to a cruel tyrant.

  63. Often, these same people are desperate.

  64. They please God through their religious actions.

  65. And yet, for all their religious actions,

  66. they don't seem to be able to discover a sense of peace,

  67. or a sense of being accepted,

  68. and the joy that that might bring them.

  69. But let's make it more personal.

  70. Most in this room,

  71. if not all in this room,

  72. I'm only excluding the very, very young here,

  73. most in this room, that is from toddlers up,

  74. are already forming,

  75. or have already formed,

  76. your view of God.

  77. Then the question becomes,

  78. on what basis have you decided your view of God?

  79. And with what degree of certainty

  80. do you hold your view of God?

  81. Do you have any sense of embarrassment

  82. in speaking of God

  83. to those you rub shoulders with on a daily basis?

  84. Paul declares,

  85. he's not ashamed of the gospel.

  86. He's not ashamed of God

  87. as displayed in the gospel.

  88. Now, I assume,

  89. and it is an assumption,

  90. but I assume that since Paul leads with that,

  91. then it is fairly likely

  92. that some Christians in the church at Rome

  93. were indeed ashamed of God

  94. or ashamed of the gospel.

  95. Perhaps that's you too.

  96. In some hidden part of your brain,

  97. you're not even game to give voice to.

  98. Well, friends,

  99. I want to say to you this morning

  100. that studying Paul's letter

  101. to the Christians at Rome,

  102. I believe,

  103. will radically change your life,

  104. whether you're a Christian or not,

  105. at this moment.

  106. Why?

  107. Why am I so confident in that?

  108. Because the letter

  109. to the Christians at Rome

  110. is all about God's gospel,

  111. and God's gospel

  112. is all about showing us God,

  113. what he's like.

  114. And you can't really discover

  115. what God is like

  116. without being profoundly impacted

  117. and changed by that.

  118. In his introduction,

  119. Paul,

  120. which we're looking at this morning,

  121. the first 17 verses,

  122. in his introduction,

  123. Paul gives a beautiful summary

  124. of what God has done

  125. and how it so perfectly suits

  126. what we need.

  127. everything by nature

  128. of the introduction,

  129. everything will be dealt with

  130. in depth

  131. in the subsequent chapters.

  132. The intro is just

  133. to whet our appetite,

  134. as it were,

  135. just to make us drool

  136. over what's coming

  137. when we see something

  138. and what God's like,

  139. what God has done,

  140. what God is doing

  141. in our lives,

  142. that which we sort of summarize

  143. as the gospel of Jesus.

  144. And I want to use

  145. three headings to unpack it

  146. and then come back

  147. to a more personal thing.

  148. So the first one is

  149. that the gospel

  150. is God's initiative.

  151. Paul's introduction

  152. begins and ends

  153. with an emphasis

  154. on the gospel of God.

  155. Verse 2,

  156. the focus is on

  157. what God has announced,

  158. what God has done

  159. for his people.

  160. The gospel,

  161. in Paul's mind,

  162. is entirely

  163. God's doing.

  164. Verse 17,

  165. as we understand

  166. what God has done

  167. in his gospel,

  168. we also learn heaps

  169. about what God is like.

  170. The gospel reveals

  171. God's righteousness

  172. or God's character.

  173. But what does that mean?

  174. What does it mean

  175. to talk about

  176. the righteousness of God?

  177. Well,

  178. it means lots of things,

  179. but in part,

  180. it refers to his character.

  181. God always does

  182. things properly.

  183. God always acts

  184. with integrity.

  185. He maintains

  186. perfect justice,

  187. yet manages to show

  188. mercy and generosity

  189. to his guilty,

  190. rebellious people.

  191. God,

  192. in his righteousness,

  193. doesn't fudge

  194. or cover over sin.

  195. He confronts it

  196. and deals with it

  197. and the guilt

  198. of his people.

  199. And in part,

  200. God's righteousness

  201. refers to his actions.

  202. In the gospel,

  203. we see God acting.

  204. Acting to do what?

  205. acting to deal

  206. with the basic dilemma

  207. of human life.

  208. That is,

  209. we are sinful,

  210. dirty people

  211. and God,

  212. being clean and holy,

  213. cannot relate to us,

  214. will not relate to us

  215. in that condition.

  216. So,

  217. the righteousness of God

  218. is God's action

  219. to make dirty,

  220. undeserving people

  221. clean and acceptable to him.

  222. God's action

  223. is about God

  224. doing for us

  225. that which we could

  226. never ever

  227. do for ourselves.

  228. Meet God's standard

  229. of obedience

  230. and justice

  231. and truth.

  232. That's not the most

  233. amazing thing,

  234. that's amazing as it is.

  235. The most amazing thing

  236. about that

  237. is that it's all

  238. available to anybody

  239. who wants it

  240. through faith.

  241. Verse 17,

  242. by faith

  243. from first to last.

  244. Hard to know exactly

  245. what that means

  246. but it seems to mean

  247. that from the start

  248. to the finish,

  249. it's just about faith.

  250. God has done

  251. what he has done.

  252. We receive

  253. what God has done

  254. through faith.

  255. And what is faith?

  256. Well, faith

  257. is taking God

  258. at his word.

  259. It's not simple.

  260. It's believing

  261. what God has said.

  262. The gospel of Jesus

  263. is God's declaration

  264. that in recognizing

  265. our need to be rescued

  266. or saved

  267. from the consequences

  268. of our rebellion

  269. or sin

  270. and simply trusting Jesus

  271. to be our righteousness,

  272. to be the means

  273. by which we will be

  274. acceptable to God

  275. and loved by God,

  276. we find therefore

  277. forgiveness

  278. and restoration

  279. to relationship

  280. with God.

  281. In a very real sense,

  282. God does all

  283. the heavy lifting

  284. and then says,

  285. it's all yours

  286. if only you will believe,

  287. if only you will take me

  288. at my word

  289. that I've done this for you.

  290. Something you can never

  291. do for yourself.

  292. Friends,

  293. the gospel shows us

  294. what God is like,

  295. but in more detail,

  296. the gospel shows us

  297. how much God

  298. loves his

  299. fallen,

  300. distorted,

  301. grotesque image bearers,

  302. grotesque because of sin,

  303. how much he wants

  304. to relate to them,

  305. how much he wants

  306. to restore them

  307. to be that

  308. which he created them

  309. to be.

  310. He's announced

  311. this way of restoring

  312. full relationship

  313. to people

  314. who deserve

  315. only his condemnation.

  316. We call it

  317. the gospel of Jesus.

  318. Second point then

  319. is that God's initiative

  320. comes with

  321. all God's power

  322. guaranteeing

  323. therefore it will be

  324. successful

  325. or it is successful.

  326. Paul describes himself

  327. as a servant

  328. or an apostle,

  329. a special messenger

  330. of God in other words.

  331. We might use

  332. more modern terms,

  333. a contract worker

  334. with a specific task

  335. of making known

  336. this wonderful initiative

  337. from God

  338. to anyone

  339. and everyone

  340. who will listen.

  341. The next cab

  342. off the rank

  343. for Paul

  344. is coming to Rome

  345. and then he hopes

  346. to get to Spain.

  347. Wherever people

  348. will listen,

  349. wherever Paul can go,

  350. he's contracted

  351. to speak of this

  352. wonderful initiative

  353. of God

  354. to rescue

  355. undeserving people.

  356. But God's gospel

  357. is never dependent

  358. on Paul

  359. or any of the other

  360. apostles for success.

  361. Look at verse 2.

  362. What Paul is speaking,

  363. his message,

  364. is not a new message.

  365. In fact,

  366. it's the culmination,

  367. it's the final piece

  368. of a jigsaw

  369. that's been built

  370. throughout the whole

  371. of the Old Testament.

  372. God's one plan

  373. of salvation

  374. promised over generations

  375. the plan

  376. to re-engage

  377. with his people

  378. in rich,

  379. everlasting relationship.

  380. And God's power

  381. over the generations

  382. was seen

  383. in keeping his plan

  384. on track

  385. in spite of all sorts

  386. of white-anting

  387. of his plan

  388. by evil people.

  389. God's power

  390. was clearly evident.

  391. but never more clearly

  392. than in the birth,

  393. life,

  394. death,

  395. and resurrection

  396. and return to heaven

  397. of Jesus

  398. as Lord and Savior.

  399. And we see there

  400. in verse 4,

  401. Jesus was clearly human,

  402. descended from King David.

  403. God's promise to David

  404. was that a descendant

  405. of his would re-establish

  406. God's kingdom

  407. as an eternal kingdom.

  408. And God's power

  409. demonstrated

  410. in Jesus' resurrection

  411. from the dead

  412. proved that Jesus

  413. was truly God

  414. as well as truly human.

  415. And therefore,

  416. perfectly qualified

  417. Jesus to establish

  418. God's eternal kingdom

  419. and rule.

  420. And so he returns

  421. to heaven

  422. as Lord and Savior.

  423. And verse 5

  424. is that same

  425. power

  426. which underpins

  427. the authority

  428. of Paul

  429. and other apostles

  430. and which

  431. in Paul's own generation

  432. has resulted

  433. in so many people

  434. being saved,

  435. being changed

  436. from the inside out,

  437. coming to Jesus

  438. for salvation.

  439. And verses 6

  440. through to 12

  441. is very personal details

  442. as Paul just

  443. reflects

  444. on his desire

  445. to visit

  446. with the Christians

  447. at Rome.

  448. The fact that there

  449. are so many Christians

  450. in Rome,

  451. the fact that there

  452. are any Christians

  453. in Rome,

  454. confirms the reality

  455. of the gospel

  456. to Paul.

  457. But very simply,

  458. it's just hard

  459. to argue

  460. with the evidence

  461. of radically

  462. changed lives.

  463. Everywhere Paul goes,

  464. he's seen

  465. those radically

  466. changed lives

  467. with people

  468. who've been confronted

  469. by God's

  470. powerful gospel.

  471. gospel.

  472. Paul had heard

  473. about the changing

  474. power of the gospel

  475. in the Christians

  476. in Rome.

  477. Changed from the inside out,

  478. changed in their actions,

  479. changed in their attitudes,

  480. changed in their thinking.

  481. And Paul couldn't wait

  482. to meet them

  483. and swap stories

  484. of how they'd experienced

  485. God's grace,

  486. God's powerful gospel

  487. to encourage

  488. one another.

  489. And so powerful

  490. is this gospel.

  491. Paul uses

  492. a very interesting word

  493. in verse 16.

  494. He describes it

  495. as God's dynamite.

  496. The Greek word

  497. is dunamis,

  498. the word we get

  499. dynamite from.

  500. The gospel

  501. is God's

  502. blasting powder.

  503. Blasting

  504. as dirty,

  505. sinful people,

  506. as Beck said

  507. in the talk,

  508. but I won't do

  509. all the theatrical things.

  510. The old technology

  511. of a piece of paper

  512. works so well for me.

  513. I don't have to dance

  514. and jig around

  515. unless my pages

  516. blow away.

  517. But yeah,

  518. the gospel

  519. just blasts

  520. the dirt away.

  521. Not just on the outside,

  522. but on the inside

  523. right to the depth

  524. of our being.

  525. Blasts us free

  526. from the guilt

  527. and power of sin

  528. and leaves us

  529. totally renewed

  530. from the inside out.

  531. Which in turn

  532. allows God

  533. to treat me

  534. and everyone else

  535. who believes

  536. like we'd never

  537. ever sinned

  538. in the first place.

  539. Complete restoration

  540. of relationship.

  541. Complete removal

  542. of dirt

  543. so that clean

  544. now relates again

  545. to clean

  546. in Christ.

  547. Clean in Christ.

  548. That's a wonderful

  549. picture word,

  550. isn't it?

  551. One little stick

  552. of dynamite

  553. doesn't look like

  554. very much.

  555. Not that many of us

  556. have seen a stick

  557. of dynamite,

  558. but one little stick

  559. of dynamite

  560. doesn't look like

  561. very much.

  562. But boy,

  563. oh boy,

  564. when it's well applied,

  565. it's powerful

  566. in what it achieves.

  567. in exactly the same

  568. way,

  569. my friends.

  570. The gospel

  571. may not look

  572. or sound

  573. powerful

  574. in comparison

  575. to what others

  576. in the world

  577. says is the way

  578. to the good life,

  579. the way to security.

  580. But it is the solution

  581. for our deepest

  582. problems.

  583. It is the answer

  584. to our deepest

  585. cravings.

  586. It demolishes

  587. the solid walls

  588. of unbelief

  589. and resistance

  590. to God's rule.

  591. No trouble

  592. at all.

  593. And the third

  594. point then is

  595. this power

  596. of God

  597. has a purpose,

  598. the unbelievably

  599. radical outcome

  600. intended in God's

  601. powerful gospel.

  602. So as best

  603. we can say,

  604. Paul wrote this

  605. letter about

  606. 57 AD,

  607. which means

  608. it's a little

  609. over 20 years

  610. since Paul himself

  611. was confronted

  612. by Jesus

  613. and the gospel.

  614. He himself,

  615. while trying

  616. to persecute

  617. Christians,

  618. was so radically

  619. captured

  620. and blasted

  621. by the gospel,

  622. blasted into

  623. a whole new

  624. orientation in life

  625. and contracted

  626. to take the message

  627. of salvation

  628. both to Jews

  629. and to every

  630. other nation

  631. on earth.

  632. 20 years on,

  633. what's Paul

  634. excited about still?

  635. The gospel.

  636. He's still pushing

  637. this radical gospel

  638. of God,

  639. that salvation,

  640. forgiveness,

  641. new relationship

  642. with God

  643. and guaranteed

  644. place in heaven

  645. is promised

  646. to everyone

  647. who recognizes

  648. their need

  649. and simply

  650. turns to Jesus

  651. for the righteousness

  652. that's necessary

  653. to get into heaven,

  654. a righteousness

  655. they can never

  656. produce by themselves

  657. but is on offer

  658. in Jesus.

  659. Jesus.

  660. We probably

  661. find it a bit

  662. hard to understand

  663. how radical

  664. this would have

  665. been in Paul's

  666. day.

  667. We're so familiar

  668. with the terminology

  669. that it's just,

  670. well I think in some

  671. cases,

  672. ho-hum for us

  673. but this was

  674. radical stuff

  675. in Paul's day

  676. and age.

  677. Let me try

  678. and illustrate.

  679. The Jews

  680. for instance,

  681. if you ask them

  682. what a person

  683. needs

  684. to get to heaven,

  685. they would say,

  686. well the first thing

  687. they have to do

  688. is become a Jew

  689. in every shape

  690. and form

  691. and do all

  692. the things

  693. that are required

  694. of the Jew.

  695. Pray and sacrifice

  696. and go to the temple

  697. and do this

  698. and do that

  699. and have your

  700. alms days

  701. and your holidays

  702. and do,

  703. do,

  704. do.

  705. Yeah,

  706. that's what,

  707. that's,

  708. do that for a start

  709. and then we'll see.

  710. the Romans.

  711. The Roman worldview

  712. was that they were

  713. a superior race.

  714. We've heard that

  715. in our own sort of

  716. 20th century,

  717. haven't we?

  718. They believed

  719. they were the superior race

  720. in the world

  721. and therefore naturally

  722. would be acceptable

  723. to the gods.

  724. In fact,

  725. the gods would consider

  726. an honour

  727. to be friends

  728. and associated

  729. with the Romans

  730. and the evidence

  731. of that

  732. was the physical

  733. prowess of the Romans.

  734. The superior intellect,

  735. the good character.

  736. In fact,

  737. that's why

  738. the Roman would say

  739. that's why

  740. we're the rulers

  741. of the known earth.

  742. Biggest civilization

  743. and empire

  744. had ever been seen.

  745. Again,

  746. adoption

  747. was a big thing

  748. in Roman society.

  749. Adoption into a family

  750. but only when

  751. the adopted person

  752. was respectable

  753. and commendable

  754. and came with

  755. a list of great achievements.

  756. So yes,

  757. it was a great thing

  758. to adopt somebody

  759. but they had to be somebody

  760. before you would adopt them.

  761. God's gospel

  762. is so radically different

  763. to anything

  764. the Romans would have known

  765. because God's gospel

  766. is big on adopting

  767. those

  768. who are down and outs,

  769. who are

  770. dirty,

  771. unlovely,

  772. undesirable

  773. before God.

  774. God's gospel

  775. is clear

  776. that anyone

  777. and everyone

  778. regardless of their race,

  779. regardless of their

  780. circumstance in life

  781. will receive

  782. a fresh start.

  783. Grace and salvation

  784. if they'll receive it

  785. as a gift

  786. through trusting Jesus.

  787. It's that simple.

  788. And again,

  789. we can feel

  790. Paul's excitement

  791. at this incredible truth.

  792. If you look at

  793. verse 6 there,

  794. in the church

  795. at Rome,

  796. Paul knew

  797. there were people

  798. from all over the world

  799. sitting shoulder

  800. to shoulder

  801. in unity

  802. together

  803. recipients

  804. of God's righteousness,

  805. together

  806. loved by God,

  807. together

  808. assured of his favor.

  809. and as a direct result

  810. of that,

  811. they loved each other.

  812. People who naturally

  813. would hate

  814. and divide each other,

  815. they loved each other.

  816. They were committed

  817. to helping each other

  818. and Paul wanted

  819. to be part of it.

  820. He soaked it in

  821. and just,

  822. wow,

  823. this is the result

  824. of God's powerful gospel.

  825. If I put it

  826. in modern terms,

  827. I think I could say this,

  828. that the gospel

  829. was doing

  830. around the world

  831. at that time

  832. what the United Nations

  833. would long to do,

  834. what the United Nations

  835. was set up to do

  836. and which everybody

  837. in the world knows

  838. the United Nations

  839. will never be able to do.

  840. Now,

  841. I'm not saying

  842. they haven't done

  843. good things.

  844. Don't misunderstand.

  845. me.

  846. But they're just

  847. on the surface.

  848. The gospel

  849. reunites humanity

  850. so hopelessly

  851. divided by ethnic,

  852. religious,

  853. and nationalistic

  854. boundaries.

  855. And boy,

  856. how I wish

  857. the gospel

  858. would sweep

  859. through Europe

  860. in the coming weeks

  861. before warfare does.

  862. So,

  863. moving towards

  864. conclusion,

  865. to the conclusion

  866. now,

  867. now we're in a

  868. position,

  869. I think,

  870. to understand

  871. what Paul's

  872. getting at

  873. in verse 16

  874. when he says,

  875. I'm not ashamed

  876. of the gospel.

  877. Because to understand

  878. that phrase,

  879. we need to understand

  880. something of shame

  881. and honor.

  882. And why Paul says

  883. he's not ashamed

  884. of the gospel.

  885. It's Paul's great thing

  886. which the rest

  887. of this letter

  888. explains in detail.

  889. So, shame and honor

  890. were huge categories

  891. in Roman society

  892. as indeed

  893. in many

  894. Middle Eastern

  895. societies

  896. still are.

  897. Perhaps some

  898. Christians in Rome

  899. thought that

  900. aspects of

  901. Paul's person,

  902. Paul's character,

  903. or of the gospel

  904. itself

  905. as a body of truth

  906. were shameful.

  907. Now, how might

  908. that work

  909. for these people?

  910. Well, perhaps

  911. Paul's background.

  912. He was a Jew

  913. and a Roman citizen.

  914. Now, lots in Rome

  915. really resented

  916. dual citizenship,

  917. especially when

  918. it was a Jew

  919. who was a Roman citizen.

  920. It was embarrassing.

  921. It was actually

  922. unpalatable to some.

  923. Then, perhaps,

  924. if you add into that

  925. the circumstances

  926. in which Paul

  927. was commissioned

  928. to speak the

  929. gospel.

  930. In Roman circles,

  931. to be a rhetorician

  932. or a public speaker

  933. or a teacher

  934. in public places,

  935. you needed

  936. an illustrious

  937. background.

  938. When they dig

  939. into Paul's

  940. background,

  941. what did they find?

  942. Hmm.

  943. He was a bit

  944. of a rat pack.

  945. He had blood

  946. on his hands.

  947. And he,

  948. according to some

  949. sources,

  950. he was a bit

  951. of a roughneck.

  952. Perhaps he was

  953. embarrassing

  954. to know

  955. that he was coming

  956. to Rome.

  957. Perhaps some

  958. Christians

  959. struggled with

  960. the apparent

  961. shameful beginnings

  962. of the gospel.

  963. Well,

  964. we understand

  965. the gospel

  966. and the results

  967. of the gospel,

  968. but boy,

  969. we want to play

  970. down the fact

  971. that, again,

  972. the gospel

  973. is sourced

  974. in the person

  975. Jesus,

  976. the Jewish nation,

  977. Jewish history.

  978. And my goodness

  979. me,

  980. we Romans,

  981. we're persecuting,

  982. we're trying to get

  983. rid of the Jews.

  984. The suspicious

  985. circumstances

  986. of Jesus'

  987. birth,

  988. the ordinariness

  989. of Jesus'

  990. life,

  991. his crucifixion

  992. as a criminal,

  993. and that was

  994. crucifixion under

  995. Roman law,

  996. remember.

  997. His claim

  998. for resurrection,

  999. people just don't

  1000. come back

  1001. from the dead.

  1002. Jewish links,

  1003. indebtedness

  1004. to the Jewish nation,

1005. and so on and so forth.

  1006. Yeah,

  1007. you could well

  1008. imagine that people

  1009. might be a tad

  1010. embarrassed

  1011. slash ashamed

  1012. of this guy

  1013. coming to preach

  1014. the gospel.

  1015. Sort of,

  1016. we love the outcome

  1017. of the gospel,

  1018. but Paul,

  1019. can you just

  1020. tone down the

  1021. background?

  1022. Perhaps some

  1023. Christian,

  1024. Roman Christians

  1025. find the gospel

  1026. itself shameful

  1027. because it

  1028. flies in the face

  1029. of Roman

  1030. self-value.

  1031. It identifies

  1032. individual Romans

  1033. as being equally

  1034. guilty before God.

  1035. Yes,

  1036. those wretched

  1037. barbarians out there

  1038. that we conquer

  1039. because we're better,

  1040. well,

  1041. actually the gospel

  1042. says you're not

  1043. a whit better

  1044. than them

  1045. in terms of God.

  1046. Equally in need

  1047. of a rescue

  1048. because of a bad

  1049. heart towards God,

  1050. because of your

  1051. determination for

  1052. rebellion and autonomy.

  1053. perhaps even some

  1054. people find the

  1055. gospel or ashamed

  1056. of the gospel

  1057. or embarrassed

  1058. by the gospel

  1059. because of what

  1060. it says about

  1061. God's heart.

  1062. See,

  1063. Romans took

  1064. their lead

  1065. from their idea

  1066. of the gods

  1067. and the top gods

  1068. were merciless.

  1069. The old idea,

  1070. if you got power,

  1071. you got wanted.

  1072. But this God

  1073. of the Christians,

  1074. this God

  1075. of the gospel,

  1076. well,

  1077. for goodness sake,

  1078. he actually takes

  1079. the cost of

  1080. repairing relationship

  1081. upon himself.

  1082. He's known

  1083. and characterized

  1084. by mercy

  1085. and kindness.

  1086. He doesn't

  1087. treat his enemies

  1088. as they deserve.

  1089. He treats them

  1090. with honor

  1091. in spite of

  1092. what they deserve.

  1093. My friends,

  1094. these are not

  1095. the qualities

  1096. that the world

  1097. in general

  1098. appreciate,

  1099. let alone

  1100. the Roman world

  1101. in particular.

  1102. Paul knew

  1103. that he deserved

  1104. to be treated

  1105. shamefully

  1106. before the righteousness

  1107. of God

  1108. because he had brought

  1109. shame on God.

  1110. God's name,

  1111. God's character

  1112. by his horrible,

  1113. persistent rebellion.

  1114. God's power

  1115. and the gospel

  1116. but then Paul says,

  1117. but how could I

  1118. be ashamed

  1119. of God

  1120. or the gospel

  1121. which treats me

  1122. with such honor?

  1123. honor.

  1124. So,

  1125. for you and me,

  1126. if you've experienced

  1127. God's powerful gospel,

1128. how could you be ashamed?

1129. How could you be embarrassed?

  1130. We've been treated

  1131. with honor

  1132. contrary to what

  1133. we deserve

  1134. in the gospel.

  1135. We've been rescued,

  1136. renewed,

  1137. adopted into

  1138. God's own family

  1139. and all of that

  1140. when we know

  1141. actually

  1142. that it was Jesus

  1143. who was treated

  1144. shamefully

  1145. on our behalf

  1146. so that we might

  1147. be treated

  1148. with honor.

  1149. Amen.

  1150. Amen.

  1151. Amen.

  1152. Amen.

  1153. Amen.

  1154. Amen.

  1155. Amen.

  1156. Amen.

  1157. Amen.

  1158. Amen.

  1159. Amen.

  1160. Amen.

  1161. Amen.

  1162. Amen.

  1163. Amen.

  1164. Amen.

  1165. Amen.

  1166. Amen.

  1167. Amen.

  1168. Amen.

  1169. Amen.

  1170. Amen.

  1171. Amen.

  1172. Amen.

  1173. Amen.

  1174. Amen.

  1175. Amen.

  1176. Ethered is

  1177. the

  1178. way

  1179. that

  1180. by

  1181. May

  1182. God

  1183. God

  1184. we

  1185. collect

  1186. on

  1187. back

  1188. to the

  1189. old

  1190. way

  1191. of

  1192. thinking

  1193. that we

  1194. can create

  1195. our own

  1196. righteousness

  1197. that we

  1198. can bring

  1199. our own

  1200. assets

  1201. to the

  1202. bargaining

  1203. table

  1204. and say

  1205. actually God

  1206. you need

  1207. to let

  1208. me an

  1209. heart

  1210. I

  1211. deserve

  1212. it

1213. On this basis and that basis and that basis.

  1214. My religious actions here.

  1215. My attitude there.

  1216. My good works here.

  1217. That brings incredible shame.

  1218. To the Lord.

1219. Or if we claim to be Christ's renewed people.

1220. But fail to be concerned.

1221. To be his single united community.

  1222. I said before.

  1223. Changed lives.

1224. Are hard to argue with.

1225. And if we want to speak.

1226. And adorn God's powerful gospel.

1227. Then there's no better way.

  1228. To do that.

1229. Than the model of changed lives.

  1230. A radically.

  1231. Different community.

1232. Where all the natural divisions of the world.

  1233. Just mean nothing.

  1234. My final comment then.

1235. Is if you've not yet experienced.

  1236. God's powerful gospel.

  1237. Then why not.

  1238. Ask to be changed.

  1239. From the inside out.

  1240. This morning.

  1241. Right here now.

  1242. Why?

  1243. Why?

  1244. Why?

  1245. Why?

  1246. Because renewal by Jesus.

1247. Is precisely what you need.

  1248. To fix.

1249. The deep-seated problem of guilt.

1250. That manifests itself in a whole heap of ways.

  1251. In your life.

1252. Even though you may not realize at this point.

1253. That it is the deep-seated problem.

1254. Of sin and rebellion of God.

1255. That manifests itself in all these different ways.

1256. and the beauty of the gospel is that this morning

1257. the Lord doesn't ask you to produce your own righteousness

1258. he doesn't ask you to achieve

1259. a standard that he knows is impossible for you to achieve

1260. he says I've done it for you

1261. and what I want you to do is take out your hand

1262. put out your hand and take it as a gift

1263. take me at my word

1264. and believe that your whole relationship with God

1265. is going to be transformed and renewed

1266. simply by believing that Jesus has died

1267. and dealt with your sin

1268. see at the end of the day

1269. you may not realise it but I can tell you

1270. that renewal by Jesus is the answer

1271. to your deepest longing to be loved

1272. to be accepted by God

1273. that's where we started at

1274. it's the key to the good life

  1275. a life of purpose

1276. and a life of security

  1277. that's what we're all craving for

1278. that's why we ask that question

1279. to start with in life

  1280. what is God like

1281. and from there we ask the question

  1282. well okay

1283. if God's like this then

1284. how do I engage in the good life

1285. so my friends I end where I started

1286. what is your God like

  1287. I'm not talking theory

1288. I'm talking on the ground

  1289. rubber meeting the road

  1290. practical stuff

  1291. on any given day

  1292. in any given circumstance

1293. what is your God like

1294. and what sort of world

1295. are you building around that

1296. because the world you build around that

1297. the answer to that question

  1298. will determine your security

  1299. and your future

1300. make sure you consider the question well

  1301. and consider the answer

1302. in the light of what God himself says

1303. not in what you might think

  1304. pray with me

  1305. please

1306. Lord what an exciting start

  1307. to this letter

1308. as we just have you showcased

1309. what you've done for us

1310. what you keep on doing in us

1311. and ultimately what you intend us to be

  1312. we thank you Lord

1313. that you've not demanded from us

  1314. a righteousness

1315. which you know is not possible

  1316. for us to deliver

  1317. but instead Lord

  1318. have provided that righteousness

  1319. for us in Christ

1320. and offered it to us

  1321. as a free gift

  1322. a gift Lord

1323. that's been ever so costly

  1324. for you

  1325. to formulate

  1326. but Lord

1327. a gift which is free

  1328. to us to take

  1329. help us Lord

  1330. not to be ashamed

  1331. help us to live

  1332. as people who

  1333. are fully aware

1334. of how you honor us

  1335. in a daily basis

1336. and I pray this in Jesus name

  1337. Amen

  1338. thank you

  1339. God bless you
