  1. Good morning everyone. We're going to be reading from Romans chapter 2 from verse 1 all the way through the end of the chapter and then we'll read Romans chapter 3 up to verse 8.

Romans 2 chapter mention Romans 3 chapter mention

  2. Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things.

  3. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. Do you suppose, O man, you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God?

  4. Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?

  5. But because of your hard and impenitent heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed.

  6. He will render to each one according to his works.

  7. To those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.

  8. But for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.

  9. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek.

  10. But glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek.

  11. For God shows no partiality.

  12. For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law.

  13. And all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law.

  14. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.

  15. For when Gentiles who do not have the law by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law.

  16. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness,

  17. and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

  18. But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast in God and know his will and approve what is excellent,

  19. because you are instructed from the law, and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind,

  20. a light to those who are in darkness, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children,

  21. having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth, you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself?

  22. While you preach against stealing, do you steal?

  23. You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery?

  24. You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?

  25. You who boast in the law, dishonor God by breaking the law.

  26. For as it is written, the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.

  27. For circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision.

  28. So if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision?

  29. Then he who is physically uncircumcised but keeps the law will condemn you who have the written code and circumcision, but break the law.

  30. For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical.

  31. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the spirit, not by the letter.

  32. His praise is not from man, but from God.

  33. Then what advantage has the Jew?

  34. Or what is the value of circumcision?

  35. Much in every way.

  36. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God.

  37. What if some were unfaithful?

  38. Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God?

  39. By no means.

  40. Let God be true, though everyone were a liar.

  41. As it is written, that you may be justified in your words and prevail when you are judged.

  42. But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God,

  43. what shall we say?

  44. That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us?

  45. I speak in a human way.

  46. By no means.

  47. For then how could God judge the world?

  48. But if through my lie, God's truth abounds to his glory,

  49. why am I still being condemned as a sinner?

  50. And why not do evil that good may come?

  51. As some people slanderously charge us with saying,

  52. their condemnation is just.

  53. Well, my one-year-old boy, Samuel,

  54. he was starting to say his first words,

  55. mama, dada, blue-blue for blueberries.

  56. I probably shouldn't have said that.

  57. He's now going to be craving that.

  58. Last time I said cheese in a sermon,

  59. apparently the rest of the sermon he's just going,

  60. cheese.

  61. Enjoy that, Emma.

  62. So I thought it's about time he learned some good solid doctrine.

  63. So he's already got one or two words.

  64. So as a bit of fun,

  65. I asked him the first question in the New City Catechism.

  66. So here's the first question.

  67. I asked Samuel,

  68. what is our only hope in life and death?

  69. And I was shocked by the answer.

  70. Me.

  71. Me.

  72. Once I got over the wave of fear

  73. that my boy had already determined

  74. that the rest of his life he would get rid of God,

  75. Emma and I thought,

  76. oh, that's kind of funny.

  77. It's quite an ironic response.

  78. It's rather cute for a one-year-old to answer that way

  79. because he has no idea what I was saying.

  80. But it's a little less cute

  81. when a young person or adult

  82. who knows what that question means says,

  83. me.

  84. It's a bit less cute, isn't it?

  85. Considering yourself the absolute master of your life,

  86. my own wisdom in making choices,

  87. it's what I do, what I can achieve

  88. that will give me the good life,

  89. the blessed life now,

  90. and I'll handle the crisis of death later.

  91. Me is the hope in life and death.

  92. That's declaring autonomy from God.

  93. God, you're not going to be God over my life.

  94. My hope is in me.

  95. And we've already seen in Romans chapter 1

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  96. that such human autonomy

  97. that looks at all that God has made,

  98. don't you just get blown away by the stars

  99. every time you look up.

  100. Every person who looks at that and goes,

  101. I'm not going to treat you as God.

  102. I can be master of my own life.

  103. That willful failing to thank God

  104. and treat him as God,

  105. God says there will be punishment for that.

  106. He will hand that person over.

  107. You want to rule your own life?

  108. Okay, see how that goes for you.

  109. At the end of the chapter,

  110. just relationships are destroyed

  111. when we try and rule our own life.

  112. Look at the fruit of that.

  113. It doesn't work.

  114. And one day there will be a permanent cutting off

  115. from God's blessings.

  116. So at this point,

  117. some of us might be cheering Paul on.

  118. Preach it, brother.

  119. Yeah, those immoral people, preach it.

  120. They deserve what's coming to them.

  121. But the question we need to be asking,

  122. and it's the question that Paul is answering

  123. in these chapters, one to three,

  124. who needs the gospel to be saved?

  125. Who's in danger of experiencing the anger of God

  126. on that final day of judgment?

  127. And why?

  128. Is the gospel only for those

  129. who are flagrantly immoral?

  130. Just obviously everyone counts them as immoral,

  131. even themselves.

  132. What about the morally sensitive person?

  133. What about the religiously privileged person?

  134. Surely they're safe.

  135. Surely we are safe.

  136. Surely we deserve life now

  137. and any afterlife to come.

  138. How could we be in danger of the wrath of God?

  139. And besides,

  140. isn't holding yourself morally accountable a good thing?

  141. I am in charge of my life and my choices.

  142. I'm responsible.

  143. I'm a morally responsible person.

  144. Isn't that attitude a good thing?

  145. Isn't that what produces a good life

  146. and makes you a good person?

  147. What's wrong with that sort of autonomy?

  148. I think Paul in chapter two and three

  149. doesn't just say,

  150. well, that's the way it is, accept it.

  151. I think he actually meets us in our thinking.

  152. He comes to us,

  153. both the morally sensitive person

  154. and the religiously privileged person

  155. and goes,

  156. okay, well, let's see how you go with that.

  157. He doesn't just say,

  158. accept it.

  159. He says,

  160. okay, let's take a look at how you live.

  161. So we're about to jump into the detail.

  162. So I hope you got your Bibles open

  163. to Romans two and three.

  164. Feel free to listen and check it later.

  165. But I just want to start,

  166. if you hear nothing else today,

  167. I just want to give you

  168. the overall main point of these chapters.

  169. Here's the main point

  170. of what God's saying through Paul here.

  171. Who needs the gospel to be saved?

  172. The answer is in chapter three, verse 23.

  173. This is where he's leading to.

  174. All have sinned

  175. and fall short of the glory of God.

  176. Everyone needs the gospel.

  177. Everyone is in danger

  178. of God's righteous judgment.

  179. But no one will be held accountable

  180. for what they don't know.

  181. You will only be held accountable

  182. for what you do know.

  183. But equally true,

  184. whatever you know,

  185. whatever degree of knowledge

  186. of what is right you do know,

  187. none of us live up to what we know.

  188. So God's righteous judgment is just.

  189. It's deserved.

  190. Okay, so let's take a look at it.

  191. Moral person.

  192. So chapter two.

  193. There's two views

  194. of who Paul is talking to here.

  195. Either he's talking

  196. to the Jewish person,

  197. so he's jumping straight

  198. to the religious,

  199. or he's talking to

  200. the average Roman of the day

  201. who felt morally superior

  202. to everyone who's not a Roman.

  203. I've got a conscience.

  204. I'm a good person.

  205. I don't think it really matters too much.

  206. There's a slight nuance

  207. in argument there.

  208. The main point is the same.

  209. Okay, morally sensitive person.

  210. You who have been sitting

  211. in the jury,

  212. looking at immoral people,

  213. going,

  214. yeah, I agree, Paul.

  215. Those people do deserve

  216. what's coming to them.

  217. They deserve the fruit

  218. of their deeds.

  219. You've been sitting in the jury.

  220. Okay, hop up.

  221. Come sit in the dock.

  222. You think your internal

  223. moral compass means

  224. you will escape

  225. God's righteous judgment.

  226. That's not so,

  227. because God is righteous

  228. in his judgment.

  229. Because first,

  230. look at verses one to five,

  231. the first paragraph there.

  232. You do the same things

  233. as you condemn others for.

  234. Chapter two, verse one.

  235. Therefore, you have no excuse,

  236. O person.

  237. Every one of you who judges,

  238. for in passing judgment

  239. on another,

  240. you condemn yourself.

  241. Because the judge,

  242. you the judge,

  243. practice the very same things.

  244. You claim to know

  245. what is right

  246. and what is wrong,

  247. but do you live

  248. according to what

  249. you say is right and wrong?

  250. That's what matters.

  251. Just think of the past week.

  252. Have you cast someone

  253. in a negative light

  254. as you've spoken about them

  255. to someone else?

  256. If someone did that to you,

  257. wouldn't you be outraged

  258. by that?

  259. Did you keep your word

  260. and were you honest?

  261. Or did you fail

  262. that other person

  263. because it was just

  264. more convenient

  265. to not keep your word?

  266. Are there secrets

  267. in your life

  268. that you really hope

  269. that it never come

  270. to the light of day?

  271. That's true for all of us,

  272. isn't it?

  273. Whatever you're condemning

  274. in others,

  275. do you do the same things?

  276. You hear what Paul's saying?

  277. Your own voice

  278. is like an advanced echo

  279. of what God's voice

  280. will be on that final day.

  281. Your own voice

  282. is condemning you

  283. as you condemn others

  284. for doing the very same things.

  285. It's a pre-warning

  286. of God's judgment.

  287. God is righteous

  288. in his judgment.

  289. So why do we often

  290. not feel like a bad person

  291. if we can't even live up

  292. to our own standards?

  293. I think maybe that's what

  294. verses four and five

  295. are about.

  296. Verse four,

  297. we look at the good circumstances

  298. in our life

  299. and we conclude

  300. that we deserve them.

  301. Things are going well,

  302. reasonably,

  303. at least some of the things.

  304. So what do you think?

  305. When do people say

  306. life isn't fair?

  307. This isn't fair.

  308. Is it when things

  309. are going well

  310. or when things

  311. are going badly?

  312. I'm not sure

  313. I've heard many people go,

  314. I'm having a really good day.

  315. I don't deserve this.

  316. I haven't heard that

  317. too often.

  318. I don't think that way

  319. too often.

  320. Even though we condemn

  321. others to reap

  322. the fruit of their ways,

  323. we fail to see

  324. what we deserve.

  325. Our condemnation

  326. of others

  327. when we do

  328. the very same thing

  329. tells us

  330. we don't deserve

  331. the blessings

  332. we have

  333. today or tomorrow

  334. and yet

  335. we take

  336. the riches

  337. of God's

  338. forgiveness,

  339. not forgiveness

  340. but his kindness,

  341. his patience,

  342. his forbearance

  343. and we confuse

  344. that for approval.

  345. I deserve this.

  346. So sometimes

  347. I'm in the park

  348. or by the lake

  349. at Lake Macquarie

  350. and there's just

  351. so much bustling life

  352. and people enjoying life.

  353. Sometimes I'm just

  354. blown away.

  355. Look how much

  356. kindness

  357. God gives people.

  358. He gives me

  359. so much

  360. like I know

  361. there's hard things

  362. in our lives

  363. but there's just

  364. so much good

  365. he gives people.

  366. But that's not

  367. evidence of his

  368. approval.

  369. That's evidence

  370. of his kindness

  371. wanting you to

  372. turn to him.

  373. He's giving you

  374. time to turn.

  375. He's righteous.

  376. He's giving you

  377. time.

  378. In verse 5

  379. we think

  380. all this way

  381. because we

  382. willfully

  383. just push

  384. death out of

  385. our minds

  386. in our culture.

  387. We try and

  388. hide it.

  389. We all know

  390. one day

  391. our bodies

  392. will die.

  393. We have to

  394. face death.

  395. Each one of us.

  396. We know it

  397. and yet we just

  398. push it out of

  399. our minds.

  400. Death is just

  401. this loud alarm

  402. that

  403. something is

  404. not right.

  405. that we all

  406. must face

  407. death and

  408. we all must

  409. face the

  410. consequences

  411. of our

  412. wrongdoing.

  413. We will

  414. face God

  415. one day.

  416. God is so

  417. righteous.

  418. He is patient

  419. and forbearing

  420. giving us time

  421. to turn towards

  422. him but we

  423. confuse that

  424. patience with

  425. us deserving

  426. it and that

  427. we must be a

  428. good person.

  429. We deserve

  430. this.

  431. The third

  432. reason God

  433. is righteous

  434. in his

  435. judgment is

  436. because we

  437. see in

  438. verses 6

  439. to 11.

  440. He is

  441. righteous because

  442. he has one

  443. standard for

  444. all people.

  445. All of us

  446. there is one

  447. standard.

  448. What you

  449. actually do.

  450. It is based

  451. on truth.

  452. What you

  453. do.

  454. That is the

  455. one standard.

  456. I think we

  457. can think in

  458. terms of how

  459. school assessments

  460. work where

  461. there is the

  462. bell curve and

  463. we think we

  464. as long as

  465. we are in

  466. the majority

  467. bit of the

  468. bell curve.

  469. We are not

  470. at the

  471. tail end.

  472. We are

  473. okay.

  474. We may not

  475. be at the

  476. upper end.

  477. The really

  478. high moral

  479. achievers.

  480. As long as

  481. we are in

  482. the main

  483. pack we are

  484. okay.

  485. That is

  486. comparative

  487. assessment.

  488. Some medical

  489. exams for

  490. instance have

  491. a percentage

  492. cut off.

  493. It does

  494. really matter

  495. how well

  496. you do as

  497. long as

  498. you do

  499. better than

  500. others.

  501. God won't

  502. do that.

  503. He is

  504. righteous.

  505. He will

  506. judge you

  507. according to

  508. what you

  509. do.

  510. You alone.

  511. He is not

  512. like the

  513. classroom teacher

  514. who keeps

  515. the whole

  516. year in

  517. because of

  518. a few bad

  519. eggs.

  520. He is

  521. righteous.

  522. He looks

  523. at your

  524. deeds alone,

  525. my deeds

  526. alone.

  527. Verse 6,

  528. he will render

  529. to each one

  530. according to

  531. his works.

  532. So here is

  533. the one

  534. standard for

  535. all people,

  536. verses 7

  537. to 11.

  538. To those

  539. who by

  540. patience in

  541. well-doing

  542. seek for

  543. glory and

  544. honour and

  545. immortality,

  546. he will

  547. give eternal

  548. life.

  549. But for

  550. those who

  551. are self-seeking

  552. and do

  553. not obey

  554. the truth,

  555. but obey

  556. unrighteousness,

  557. there will be

  558. wrath and

  559. fury.

  560. Verse 11,

  561. God is

  562. righteous,

  563. he shows

  564. no

  565. favouritism,

  566. no

  567. nepotism,

  568. no

  569. discrimination.

  570. He is

  571. so righteous,

  572. he looks

  573. at your

  574. life alone.

  575. So if

  576. you're a

  577. good person

  578. who always

  579. seeks to

  580. do what

  581. is right,

  582. if you

  583. don't settle

  584. for short-term

  585. gain but

  586. you're always

  587. seeking that

  588. eternal glory

  589. and reward,

  590. if you're not

  591. motivated by

  592. selfishness,

  593. God will

  594. give you

  595. the blessings

  596. of eternal

  597. life.

  598. This begs

  599. the question,

  600. doesn't it?

  601. Who's Paul

  602. thinking of

  603. here?

  604. Who fits

  605. this category?

  606. Some

  607. take this,

  608. there's lots

  609. of different

  610. ideas but

  611. if I just

  612. can summarise

  613. it quickly,

  614. some take

  615. this as

  616. saying that

  617. some people

  618. will be

  619. rewarded by

  620. being Christian,

  621. by faith in

  622. Jesus and

  623. then others,

  624. if they don't

  625. know about

  626. Jesus,

  627. if they're

  628. sincere in

  629. doing good,

  630. then they

  631. will live.

  632. But it

  633. doesn't fit

  634. with the

  635. flow of

  636. Paul's

  637. argument like

  638. we've seen

  639. in Romans

  640. 3.23

  641. already.

  642. The point

  643. of his

  644. argument is

  645. that all

  646. of us

  647. are in

  648. need of

  649. the gospel.

  650. He says

  651. very clear

  652. in the rest

  653. of the

  654. letter,

  655. no one

  656. is saved

  657. by their

  658. works.

  659. So,

  660. let's assume

  661. that Paul

  662. doesn't totally

  663. contradict

  664. himself here.

  665. What's he

  666. doing?

  667. Who's he

  668. thinking of?

  669. I think

  670. he's saying

  671. God is

  672. just.

  673. He certainly

  674. would reward

  675. those who

  676. are always

  677. seeking good.

  678. He will.

  679. That is

  680. true.

  681. The question

  682. is,

  683. is that

  684. you?

  685. Is that

  686. me?

  687. Is that

  688. anyone?

  689. Like,

  690. I'm sick

  691. of the

  692. phrase,

  693. to be honest.

  694. I'm not

  695. perfect.

  696. I'm sick

  697. of it because

  698. people use it

  699. as an

  700. excuse not

  701. to own

  702. what they've

  703. done.

  704. But we

  705. all admit

  706. no one's

  707. perfect and

  708. yet somehow

  709. we think

  710. we fit

  711. this

  712. category.

  713. It is

  714. true that

  715. God will

  716. reward

  717. someone who's

  718. totally

  719. righteous.

  720. The problem

  721. is,

  722. who is

  723. that?

  724. There is

  725. one standard.

  726. He is so

  727. righteous.

  728. He doesn't

  729. show

  730. favouritism.

  731. God is

  732. righteous in

  733. his

  734. judgment.

  735. judgment.

  736. And the

  737. fourth reason

  738. God is

  739. righteous in

  740. his judgment,

  741. which we

  742. see in

  743. 12 to

  744. 16,

  745. verses 12

  746. to 16,

  747. is that

  748. he's given

  749. you a

  750. conscience.

  751. You do

  752. know what

  753. is right

  754. and wrong.

  755. But if

  756. you're a

  757. religious person

  758. right now,

  759. if you know

  760. what the

  761. Bible says

  762. fairly well,

  763. don't think

  764. that somehow

  765. that gives

  766. you an

  767. advantage

  768. because,

  769. to some

  770. degree,

  771. God's law

  772. is also

  773. written on

  774. every person's

  775. heart.

  776. We all

  777. have a

  778. conscience.

  779. To some

  780. degree,

  781. God has

  782. given

  783. his idea

  784. of what

  785. is right

  786. and wrong

  787. to every

  788. single

  789. person.

  790. And he

  791. will assess

  792. each person

  793. according to

  794. what they

  795. know.

  796. If you

  797. just have

  798. a moral

  799. compass,

  800. God will

  801. assess you

  802. according to

  803. how you

  804. live up to

  805. that.

  806. If you

  807. have God's

  808. law and

  809. you know

  810. it very

  811. well,

  812. he will

  813. assess you

  814. according to

  815. how you

  816. live up to

  817. that.

  818. I think

  819. verse 15

  820. is really

  821. key here.

  822. So have a

  823. look at

  824. verse 15

  825. with me.

  826. They show

  827. that,

  828. this is the

  829. morally

  830. sensitive

  831. person,

  832. they show

  833. that the

  834. work of

  835. the law

  836. is written

  837. on their

  838. hearts

  839. while their

  840. conscience

  841. also bears

  842. witness,

  843. and their

  844. conflicting

  845. thoughts

  846. accuse or

  847. even excuse

  848. them.

  849. So if

  850. you've

  851. seen the

  852. movie

  853. Inside

  854. Out,

  855. where you

  856. got these

  857. emotions in

  858. your mind,

  859. metaphorical,

  860. I think

  861. picture a

  862. courtroom in

  863. our mind,

  864. we each have

  865. a conscience,

  866. and we've

  867. got a little

  868. lawyer in

  869. there trying

  870. to get us

  871. off the

  872. hook all

  873. the time.

  874. That lawyer

  875. is pretty

  876. effective,

  877. but we've

  878. also got a

  879. judge,

  880. and that

  881. judge can be

  882. pretty harsh

  883. sometimes,

  884. can't it?

  885. Even in

  886. our society

  887. at the

  888. moment that

  889. is so

  890. adamant that

  891. each person

  892. can decide

  893. what is

  894. right and

  895. wrong for

  896. themselves,

  897. we still

  898. have this

  899. conscience.

  900. We can't

  901. escape our

  902. inner judge.

  903. In fact,

  904. if you want

  905. a life of

  906. loving

  907. relationships,

  908. then that

  909. places a

  910. moral demand

  911. on you.

  912. If you

  913. want loving

  914. relationships

  915. in your

  916. life,

  917. that places

  918. a moral

  919. demand on

  920. you.

  921. I'm going

  922. to quote

  923. Jordan

  924. Peterson

  925. here,

  926. a behavioural,

  927. he's quite

  928. popular,

  929. I'm not sure

  930. if you've

  931. heard of him

  932. before,

  933. Canadian

  934. behavioural

  935. psychologist.

  936. He said

  937. this really

  938. well,

  939. and I'm

  940. not sure

  941. if I've

  942. thought of

  943. it this

  944. way before,

  945. so here's

  946. what he

  947. said.

  948. If you

  949. view someone

  950. with love,

  951. then it's

  952. incumbent upon

  953. you to

  954. treat them

  955. as if

  956. they're

  957. valuable.

  958. And then

  959. the more

  960. you treat

  961. other people

  962. as valuable,

  963. the better

  964. person you

  965. are.

  966. That just

  967. comes along

  968. for the

  969. ride.

  970. So the

  971. more love

  972. you view

  973. other people

  974. with,

  975. the higher

  976. the moral

  977. demand that's

  978. placed on

  979. you.

  980. It requires

  981. you to treat

  982. them as

  983. valuable.

  984. Then I'd

  985. say too,

  986. well,

  987. there's another

  988. reason why

  989. it's so

  990. important to

  991. be truthful

  992. and in

  993. some sense

  994. to be good,

  995. because it

  996. isn't obvious

  997. to me that

  998. you can

  999. withstand

  1000. that moral

  1001. load if

  1002. you're

  1003. compromised

  1004. by too

  1005. much sin.

  1006. It's just

  1007. too much.

  1008. So he's

  1009. not a

  1010. Christian.

  1011. He's

  1012. sympathetic

  1013. to

  1014. Christianity,

  1015. but he's

  1016. not a

  1017. Christian.

  1018. If I

  1019. can try

  1020. and reword

  1021. what he's

  1022. saying here,

  1023. or just

  1024. summarise,

  1025. the more

  1026. you love

  1027. someone,

  1028. you've

  1029. got to

  1030. treat them

  1031. as valuable.

  1032. And if

  1033. you treat

  1034. them as

  1035. valuable,

  1036. that places

  1037. a moral

  1038. obligation to

  1039. do that.

  1040. And the

  1041. question is,

  1042. do we

  1043. treat people

  1044. as valuable?

  1045. You can't

  1046. have love

  1047. in your

  1048. life and

  1049. no moral

  1050. accountability.

  1051. They go

  1052. hand in

  1053. hand.

  1054. So the

  1055. question is,

  1056. what does

  1057. your conscience

  1058. tell you?

  1059. When our

  1060. inner judge

  1061. approves of

  1062. what we do,

  1063. it shows

  1064. that we have

  1065. a moral

  1066. compass.

  1067. It says,

  1068. you are

  1069. right in

  1070. doing that.

  1071. But even

  1072. there,

  1073. there's a

  1074. problem.

  1075. It shows

  1076. we have

  1077. a moral

  1078. compass,

  1079. but we

  1080. don't

  1081. always do

  1082. that right

  1083. every single

  1084. time.

  1085. God is

  1086. righteous,

  1087. he gives

  1088. you his

  1089. moral compass,

  1090. and he is

  1091. aware of

  1092. your secret

  1093. thoughts.

  1094. He knows

  1095. each of our

  1096. conscience.

  1097. And again,

  1098. our conscience

  1099. is the

  1100. voice that

  1101. is an

  1102. echo of

  1103. what God

  1104. will say

  1105. on that

  1106. final day

  1107. to each

  1108. one of

  1109. us.

  1110. It's a

  1111. warning.

  1112. So after

  1113. looking at

  1114. those

  1115. paragraphs,

  1116. I wanted

  1117. to speak to

  1118. Christians for

  1119. a moment.

  1120. Do you see

  1121. the principle

  1122. Paul is

  1123. using here?

  1124. I think

  1125. we can

  1126. sometimes

  1127. condemn

  1128. unbelievers

  1129. for the

  1130. law.

  1131. It's

  1132. because they

  1133. don't live

  1134. up to what

  1135. we know

  1136. is right,

  1137. but if we

  1138. know the

  1139. Bible,

  1140. that standard

  1141. is for

  1142. us.

  1143. I don't

  1144. think it's

  1145. always appropriate

  1146. to demand

  1147. of unbelievers,

  1148. family or

  1149. friends,

  1150. what they

  1151. don't yet

  1152. know.

  1153. But they

  1154. still need

  1155. the gospel.

  1156. Just ask

  1157. them, do

  1158. they live

  1159. up to what

  1160. they do

  1161. know, their

  1162. moral compass,

  1163. what they

  1164. condemn others

  1165. for?

  1166. And if they

  1167. don't live up

  1168. to that, how

  1169. do they reconcile

  1170. that?

  1171. Okay, so

  1172. Christian,

  1173. religious person,

  1174. religiously

  1175. privileged person,

  1176. claiming you

  1177. have more

  1178. knowledge of

  1179. God, of

  1180. God's law,

  1181. God's ways,

  1182. it gives you

  1183. an advantage,

  1184. doesn't it?

  1185. Well, it

  1186. doesn't,

  1187. actually.

  1188. And Paul's

  1189. about to

  1190. explain why.

  1191. So the

  1192. Jew or the

  1193. person who

  1194. grows up in

  1195. the church,

  1196. who knows

  1197. their Bible,

  1198. they do

  1199. know more.

  1200. There are

  1201. real privileges

  1202. that come

  1203. along with

  1204. that.

  1205. But you

  1206. too, me

  1207. too, I

  1208. am in

  1209. danger of

  1210. the wrath

  1211. of God.

  1212. Pre-Jesus.

  1213. We can

  1214. often think

  1215. that the

  1216. privilege means

  1217. advantage,

  1218. like the

  1219. child of a

  1220. rich and

  1221. powerful parent

  1222. who, they're

  1223. just accepted

  1224. into university

  1225. by virtue of

  1226. who their

  1227. dad is, who

  1228. their parent

  1229. is, who

  1230. their mum

  1231. is, or

  1232. they get

  1233. the job

  1234. just because

  1235. of that

  1236. privilege.

  1237. We can

  1238. think that

  1239. privilege means

  1240. advantage, but

  1241. that's not the

  1242. case with God

  1243. because he is

  1244. righteous.

  1245. God is

  1246. righteous, he

  1247. has one

  1248. standard, what

  1249. you actually

  1250. do in light of

  1251. the knowledge

  1252. you have.

  1253. God is

  1254. a

  1255. religious

  1256. person.

  1257. If you

  1258. count yourself

  1259. as a

  1260. religious

  1261. person, hop

  1262. out of the

  1263. jury box, it's

  1264. your turn to

  1265. be in the

  1266. dock.

  1267. Let's have a

  1268. look.

  1269. Why is there

  1270. no advantage?

  1271. Why are you

  1272. in danger of

  1273. the wrath of

  1274. God?

  1275. So verse

  1276. 17 and

  1277. following.

  1278. So

  1279. Paul's speaking

  1280. to the Jewish

  1281. people, but I

  1282. think there's a

  1283. lot of parallels

  1284. for Christians

  1285. today.

  1286. If you

  1287. call yourself

  1288. a Jew and

  1289. rely on the

  1290. law and

  1291. boast in God

  1292. and know his

  1293. will, that

  1294. boasting is good

  1295. by the way, and

  1296. approve what is

  1297. excellent, how

  1298. could God's

  1299. people, God's

  1300. special chosen

  1301. people experience

  1302. God's wrath?

  1303. Surely we're

  1304. safe, says the

  1305. Jew.

  1306. But God is

  1307. righteous in his

  1308. judgment because

  1309. firstly, you

  1310. don't practice

  1311. what you

  1312. preach.

  1313. I don't

  1314. think the

  1315. criticism is

  1316. in verses

  1317. 19 and

  1318. 20, claiming

  1319. to be a

  1320. guide to the

  1321. blind, a

  1322. light to

  1323. those who

  1324. are in

  1325. darkness.

  1326. I don't

  1327. think it's

  1328. wrong to

  1329. think of

  1330. yourself that

  1331. way, that

  1332. you have

  1333. more knowledge

  1334. of God's

  1335. ways than

  1336. others.

  1337. If that's

  1338. true, that's

  1339. okay.

  1340. I don't

  1341. think the

  1342. criticism is

  1343. there.

  1344. The

  1345. criticism comes

  1346. in verse

  1347. 21.

  1348. You then who

  1349. teach others,

  1350. do not teach

  1351. yourself, while

  1352. you preach

  1353. against stealing,

  1354. do you

  1355. steal?

  1356. You who

  1357. say that one

  1358. must not

  1359. commit adultery,

  1360. do you

  1361. commit adultery?

  1362. You who

  1363. abhor idols,

  1364. do you rob

  1365. temples?

  1366. So these

  1367. three examples,

  1368. they confuse

  1369. me a bit

  1370. because it's

  1371. not clear how

  1372. every Jew would

  1373. be convicted of

  1374. this.

  1375. So either

  1376. we've got to

  1377. take these

  1378. three accusations

  1379. that you've

  1380. committed adultery,

  1381. either we've got

  1382. to take them a

  1383. bit less

  1384. literally as

  1385. lust, that

  1386. everyone's

  1387. committed lust.

  1388. So that's one

  1389. option that's

  1390. possible.

  1391. I slightly

  1392. prefer a second

  1393. option, which is

  1394. that Paul is

  1395. establishing the

  1396. point that it's

  1397. not by virtue of

  1398. being one of God's

  1399. people that

  1400. guarantees that

  1401. you're saved.

  1402. And he points

  1403. out a few

  1404. people that

  1405. that's not

  1406. true for, and

  1407. if it's not

  1408. true for a few,

  1409. then it's not

  1410. true for all.

  1411. So I think it

  1412. works like this.

  1413. In our day, if

  1414. we consider the

  1415. royal commission

  1416. into the sex

  1417. scandals and the

  1418. cover-ups, and

  1419. from leadership in

  1420. the church, no

  1421. less, hasn't that

  1422. blasphemed the

  1423. name of Jesus?

  1424. In our society.

  1425. So on the one

  1426. hand, these

  1427. leaders are

  1428. boasting in

  1429. knowing God, and

  1430. then by their

  1431. behaviour, they've

  1432. just, the

  1433. reputation of God

  1434. is in the mud

  1435. now, isn't it, in

  1436. society?

  1437. I think Paul's

  1438. point here is

  1439. that clearly for

  1440. some Jewish

  1441. people back

  1442. then, and the

  1443. principle still

  1444. applies today,

  1445. that they might

  1446. claim it all they

  1447. want, but

  1448. clearly they're

  1449. showing by their

  1450. behaviour, they

  1451. don't actually

  1452. believe it, and

  1453. they're under the

  1454. condemnation of

  1455. God, they're in

  1456. danger of the

  1457. wrath of God.

  1458. I think he's just

  1459. making the simple

  1460. point, by virtue of

  1461. being a Jew, that

  1462. doesn't mean you're

  1463. safe.

  1464. God is righteous, he

  1465. will judge you

  1466. according to what

  1467. you do.

  1468. And then in

  1469. verses 25 to 29, he

  1470. goes broader to

  1471. challenge every

  1472. Jew.

  1473. Everyone who

  1474. claims to be one

  1475. of God's people and

  1476. therefore automatically

  1477. safe from God's

  1478. wrath.

  1479. Talking about

  1480. circumcision and

  1481. having the law.

  1482. Those were the two

  1483. marks of being a

  1484. Jew.

  1485. Do you belong to

  1486. God's people?

  1487. Then you've got the

  1488. law and you're

  1489. circumcised if you're

  1490. a male.

  1491. They were the two

  1492. marks of belonging

  1493. to God's people.

  1494. But as God has

  1495. always said, even in

  1496. his law, Deuteronomy

  1497. 10, says,

  1498. circumcise the

  1499. foreskin of your

  1500. heart and be no

  1501. longer stubborn.

  1502. Fear the Lord your

  1503. God, walk in all

  1504. his ways, love him

  1505. and serve the Lord

  1506. your God with all

  1507. your heart and with

  1508. all your soul and

  1509. keep the commandments.

  1510. It's what's on the

  1511. inside that matters.

  1512. The external marks

  1513. of circumcision and

  1514. the law are just

  1515. meant to be symbolic

  1516. of what's true on

  1517. the inside.

  1518. So much so that

  1519. even if you don't

  1520. have those marks,

  1521. so if you're not a

  1522. Jew but you keep

  1523. the law and you

  1524. confess your sin to

  1525. God, God will count

  1526. you as the true

  1527. Jew.

  1528. You are really part

  1529. of God's people.

  1530. It's what's on the

  1531. inside that matters

  1532. is the point.

  1533. So Christians in the

  1534. room on Zoom, what

  1535. external marks of

  1536. being a Christian, of

  1537. being one of God's

  1538. people are you relying

1539. on to be sure that

  1540. you are saved?

  1541. It could be as

  1542. simple as owning a

  1543. Bible or the number

  1544. of Christian books in

  1545. your library.

1546. It could be as your

  1547. general knowledge of

  1548. the Bible.

  1549. You take pride in

  1550. knowing which chapter

1551. and verse a quote is

  1552. from.

1553. It could be the badge

  1554. that you identify as.

  1555. I'm Catholic, I'm

  1556. Anglican, I'm

  1557. Baptist, or maybe it's

  1558. I'm not just a

  1559. Christian, I'm

  1560. Reformed.

1561. Is it the badge that

  1562. you're relying on?

1563. Do you put store in

  1564. your baptism?

  1565. I was baptized or I

  1566. prayed that prayer.

1567. I must be born again

  1568. because of those

  1569. things.

  1570. Is it some spiritual

  1571. mystical encounter with

  1572. God?

  1573. I had a spiritual

  1574. experience with God

  1575. surely.

  1576. I'm one of his

  1577. people.

1578. Is it the role or

  1579. status that you have

  1580. in this church?

  1581. I teach at Fresh.

  1582. I teach Grace Kids.

  1583. I'm a small group

  1584. leader.

  1585. I'm a preacher.

  1586. Do you think by

  1587. virtue of preaching

  1588. this sermon that

  1589. makes me acceptable to

  1590. God?

1591. Is it the role or

  1592. status you have?

  1593. Is it the Christian

  1594. upbringing you've

  1595. had?

  1596. your parents cannot

  1597. answer for you when

  1598. you face God in

  1599. judgment?

  1600. There's probably more

1601. marks that we can rely

1602. on but if we rely on

1603. any of these things to

  1604. have confidence that we

  1605. are safe from the

  1606. wrath of God, Paul's

  1607. point is it's what's on

  1608. the inside that counts.

1609. Do you have love for

  1610. God?

1611. God's wrath will land on

1612. you if there's no love

  1613. on the inside.

  1614. And verse 29 gives us a

1615. hint for what we need to

1616. get our inside in order.

1617. We don't need laws to

  1618. obey, we need the

  1619. spirit.

1620. Okay, we have one more

  1621. paragraph.

  1622. Chapter 3, 1 to 8.

1623. And I was kind of

1624. comforted to read in a

  1625. commentary that this is

  1626. one of the most

  1627. perplexing paragraphs in

  1628. the book because...

  1629. but I can't skip it.

1630. And I often find the

1631. harder bits in a text

1632. often serve to make the

  1633. point clearer if you

  1634. wrestle with it.

1635. So let's wrestle with it.

  1636. If what I say isn't

  1637. satisfying, there's a good

  1638. chance of that, that's

  1639. probably because Romans

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  1640. chapter 9 to 11 unpacks it

  1641. even more.

1642. So feel free to go read

  1643. that later.

  1644. So, Paul anticipates the

  1645. objection from the Jew,

  1646. from the religious person.

  1647. What advantage is there

  1648. then?

  1649. There's no advantage if

  1650. you're right, Paul.

1651. Put as simply as I can, I

  1652. think there's two final

  1653. attempts from the religious

1654. person to claim that I'm

1655. safe from the wrath of God.

  1656. Verses 1 to 4.

1657. If what you're saying is

1658. right, Paul, if we, along

  1659. with Gentile sinners, are

  1660. equally guilty before God,

  1661. then you're saying there's

1662. no advantage to being a

1663. Jew, which can't be right

  1664. because we are God's

  1665. special people.

  1666. To which Paul responds,

  1667. I'm not saying there's no

  1668. Jewish privileges.

  1669. You have all the

  1670. privileges.

1671. You have the word of God

1672. to know him and love him

  1673. and obey him.

  1674. You have all the

  1675. privileges.

1676. But I am saying that

  1677. privilege doesn't

  1678. automatically mean you're

  1679. accepted by God.

1680. You don't live up to what

  1681. you know is right.

  1682. The second and last

1683. ditch effort to avoid the

1684. wrath of God on your life

  1685. is in verses 5 to 8.

  1686. And it's last

  1687. ditch.

  1688. It is twisted

  1689. thinking.

  1690. It is distorted

  1691. thinking.

  1692. It's so foolish that

  1693. Paul, the response is

  1694. really simple.

  1695. But here's the thinking

1696. for the Jew back then

1697. and I think it still

  1698. exists among Christians

  1699. today.

  1700. The Jew might

  1701. understand God's word

  1702. so well, claiming the

  1703. promises of God on

  1704. themselves and therefore

  1705. thinking that their sin

  1706. even highlights the

  1707. faithfulness of God.

  1708. My wrongdoing shows how

  1709. patient God is and

  1710. forgiving and committed to

  1711. his promises God is.

  1712. my sin brings him

  1713. glory.

  1714. And here's the twisted

  1715. thinking of it.

1716. There's some truth to it.

  1717. Here's where it goes

  1718. wrong.

  1719. The implication is

  1720. therefore my sin

  1721. doesn't matter.

  1722. I can't be judged

  1723. for it.

  1724. Because it shows how

  1725. good God is.

  1726. My sin doesn't matter.

  1727. It's just stupid

  1728. thinking.

  1729. Paul's simple

  1730. response is

  1731. where is it?

  1732. Verse 6

  1733. By no means

  1734. for then how

  1735. could God

  1736. judge the world?

  1737. If what you're

  1738. saying is right

  1739. that you are safe

  1740. because your sin

  1741. just shows how

  1742. great God is

  1743. God couldn't

  1744. judge anyone.

  1745. You're clearly

  1746. wrong in your

  1747. thinking.

  1748. because God

  1749. will judge

  1750. the world.

  1751. The presumption

  1752. fails to

  1753. appreciate the

  1754. seriousness of

  1755. sin.

  1756. It just

  1757. fails to

  1758. appreciate

  1759. that because

  1760. you're a Jew,

  1761. because you've

  1762. grown up in the

  1763. church,

  1764. that you have the

  1765. promises of

  1766. salvation.

  1767. You're claiming

  1768. that but you're

  1769. missing the fact

  1770. that God will

  1771. also keep his

  1772. word to judge

  1773. those who

  1774. don't obey

  1775. his word.

  1776. You're picking

  1777. and choosing

  1778. what God

  1779. has said.

  1780. He will be

  1781. faithful.

  1782. He'll be

  1783. faithful to

  1784. everything he

  1785. says.

  1786. Feel free to

  1787. come talk to me

  1788. later if that's

  1789. not clear.

  1790. that I've

  1791. have.

  1792. Okay.

  1793. We've come a

  1794. long way this

  1795. morning.

  1796. That's a lot to

  1797. take in.

  1798. And we've

  1799. really only

  1800. skimmed the

  1801. top of these

  1802. paragraphs.

  1803. I recognise

  1804. that.

  1805. So I just want

  1806. to step back

  1807. and let's

  1808. remember the

  1809. big picture of

  1810. what God is

  1811. saying here in

  1812. these chapters.

  1813. Who needs the

  1814. gospel of

  1815. Jesus?

  1816. Who is in

  1817. danger of the

  1818. righteous

  1819. judgement of

  1820. God?

  1821. The answer is

  1822. every single

  1823. one of us.

  1824. Whether the

  1825. flagrantly immoral

  1826. person, whether

  1827. the morally

  1828. sensitive person

  1829. or the

  1830. religiously

  1831. privileged

  1832. person, none

  1833. of us live up

  1834. to what we

  1835. know to be

  1836. right.

  1837. Right.

  1838. Right.

  1839. Right.

  1840. Right.

  1841. Right.

  1842. Right.

  1843. Right.

  1844. Right.

  1845. Right.

  1846. Right.

  1847. Right.

  1848. Right.

  1849. Right.

  1850. Right.

  1851. Right.

  1852. Right.

  1853. Right.

  1854. Right.

  1855. Right.

  1856. Right.

  1857. Right.

  1858. Right.

  1859. Right.

  1860. Right.

  1861. Right.

  1862. Right.

  1863. Right.

  1864. Right.

  1865. Right.

  1866. Right.

  1867. Right.

  1868. Right.

  1869. Right.

  1870. Right.

  1871. Right.

  1872. Right.

  1873. Right.

  1874. Right.

  1875. Right.

  1876. Right.

  1877. Right.

  1878. Right.

  1879. Right.

  1880. Right.

  1881. Right.

  1882. Right.

1883. we don't live up to our privileges, what we know.

  1884. God shows no favouritism.

  1885. He is righteous.

1886. These chapters strip us bare.

1887. We have no leg to stand on.

1888. They tell us that as the sun rises

1889. and you enjoy blessing after blessing,

1890. not a single one of us deserve it.

1891. It is evidence of God's kindness and patience.

1892. He wants you to turn to him for life.

1893. And remember that these chapters might feel harsh,

1894. but remember that a warning is not the same thing

1895. as what the warning is pointing towards, the reality.

1896. A truck hitting you head on is to be dreaded.

1897. But if you enter the freeway on the wrong side of the road

  1898. and there's a big sign saying,

  1899. you better turn back,

1900. that is a very loving thing.

1901. God is not warning you today to condemn you.

1902. He's warning you because he loves you.

1903. None of us live up to the knowledge we have.

  1904. We have no excuse.

1905. So what is our only hope in life and death

1906. when God's righteousness in his judgement

  1907. just feels so scary?

1908. Our only hope must come from outside ourselves.

1909. It must come from outside of ourselves

1910. if we've got no leg to stand on.

1911. It must come from outside society

1912. if we're all part of the problem.

1913. Our only hope is perhaps in the last place we want to look

1914. because God's righteousness is so terrifying.

1915. Our only hope is that God himself

  1916. somehow clears my conscience.

1917. My only hope is that somehow

  1918. knowing what I've done

  1919. declares me innocent

  1920. and deserving of life.

  1921. That somehow

1922. God doesn't count my failures against me.

  1923. That somehow

1924. he counts to my life

  1925. a righteous life

1926. that has always sought what is good

  1927. and treated people

  1928. and treated God

1929. with the value they have.

1930. Our only hope is the righteousness of God

  1931. that he saves us

  1932. that he gives

  1933. righteousness

  1934. as a free gift

1935. and that is the good news

  1936. of the gospel.

1937. That is exactly what God has done.

  1938. It is in Jesus

  1939. that God shows

1940. just how righteous he is.

  1941. He is righteous

  1942. almost beyond belief.

1943. where he will count you

  1944. as innocent

  1945. and deserving of life

1946. all because of what he has done.

1947. Here's how the catechism puts it.

1948. What is our only hope in life and death?

1949. That we are not our own

  1950. but belong

  1951. body and soul

1952. both in life and death.

  1953. to God

  1954. and to our saviour

  1955. Jesus Christ.

1956. So what's your only hope

  1957. in life and death?

1958. I'll leave you with that question.

  1959. the QUO

  1960. the necessity contar
