  1. Well, it's been a sobering week, hasn't it, in world news, Australian news.

  2. Capped off with the sudden death of Shane Warne.

  3. Like I remember that ball that just landed outside off stump,

  4. like almost off the crease and then came back and hit leg stump.

  5. And some of you have no idea what I'm talking about,

  6. but it's almost impossible what he did.

  7. And death is awful, but when it comes as a shock,

  8. it's just got that extra sting, doesn't it?

  9. And people were paying tribute to him.

  10. Daniel Andrews, you've probably heard.

  11. They've already going to name a grandstand at the MCG in his honour.

  12. As he now stands before the Lord of heaven and earth,

  13. I wonder what the Lord will say about his life.

  14. More to the point this morning,

  15. are you ready to stand before the Lord?

  16. God's word to us today in Romans 4

  17. is going to give us a rock-solid place to stand

  18. so that you do not have to fear that day.

  19. In a sense, you can look forward to it.

  20. Did you notice, as Romans 4 was being read,

  21. how often the phrase counted, justify, occurred?

  22. This passage is about justification.

  23. It pictures God as judge,

  24. and we either stand before him as innocent or guilty.

  25. That's what this passage is about.

  26. Either we're in right standing before God or we're not.

  27. To count is a word used for the Old Testament sacrifices.

  28. When the sacrifices offered, it was counted to the person.

  29. So the question is, what will God count to your life

  30. that will contribute to the final verdict of your life?

  31. Because as God revealed his glory to Moses up on Mount Sinai,

  32. one of the things that is part of God's glory is that he says this,

  33. he will by no means clear the guilty.

  34. He will not clear the guilty.

  35. And here's the scandal of Christianity.

  36. Verse 5 of chapter 4 has a shocking description of God.

  37. It says, God, him who justifies the ungodly.

  38. How is that possible?

  39. How is righteousness counted to an ungodly person?

  40. And as we heard last week, the good news of the gospel,

  41. the scandal is resolved.

  42. For God to be just and the justifier of the one with faith in Jesus

  43. is that he himself bore the wrath.

  44. He absorbed it himself, setting us free.

  45. It's the one who does not work but believes in him

  46. who justifies the ungodly.

  47. His faith is counted as righteousness.

  48. Does that sound right to you?

  49. I know we're kind of used to hearing that

  50. if you've grown up in evangelical churches,

  51. but isn't that encouraging moral laziness?

  52. We're talking about it at Bible study.

  53. The one who doesn't work,

  54. the one who just morally religious isn't working.

  55. It's not that person, but the person who believes.

  56. Maybe if someone is on death row and they've got...

  57. Maybe God might lower the bar and go,

  58. OK, there's nothing else you can do.

  59. You're about to be executed.

  60. But maybe I'll lower the bar.

  61. Just have faith in me.

  62. We might think, OK, God's being generous.

  63. One last chance.

  64. But what about someone who's got...

  65. Someone like Abraham, who's got a life full of good deeds?

  66. Like, Jews saw him as the example of fulfilling the law,

  67. of being obedient to God, walking in faith.

  68. Muslims looked to him as the father who surrendered to the will of God.

  69. What about him?

  70. This passage seems to be saying,

  71. nothing of good he did counts to his righteousness.

  72. Just his faith.

  73. Can it really only be by faith and faith alone

  74. that someone is saved and counted righteous?

  75. We should really care about this question.

  76. We will stand before the Lord one day.

  77. Your life depends on this.

  78. Can you be sure that it's faith that God wants from you?

  79. Faith alone.

  80. Paul pauses in chapter 4 to help us understand what faith is

  81. and help us to have confidence that faith alone

  82. really is what God wants from us.

  83. And who better to look at than Abraham?

  84. So Paul draws five main conclusions

  85. that we're going to look at anyway

  86. from one verse in the story of Abraham's life.

  87. Genesis 15, verse 6.

    Genesis 15:6

  88. Abraham believed God

  89. and it was counted to him as righteousness.

  90. So the first thing,

  91. as Marty helpfully brought out in the kids' talk,

  92. the first thing Paul draws out of this verse

  93. in verses 1 to 8

  94. is the principle.

  95. When God justifies a person,

  96. he doesn't take into account anything

  97. that person has done or ever will do.

  98. So Genesis 15, verse 6,

    Genesis 15:6

  99. it is the first time the word believe

  100. is used in the Bible

  101. and it's connected to being counted as righteousness,

  102. as righteous.

  103. Even Abraham had nothing to boast about in himself

  104. because nothing, it wasn't his own making.

  105. The righteousness comes by faith.

  106. So the principle explains verse 4 and 5.

  107. Now the one who works,

  108. his wages are not counted as a gift

  109. but as his due.

  110. So Marty's already brought this out

  111. but I'm just going to throw another

  112. small illustration out there.

  113. Imagine your dad,

  114. maybe back in the day,

  115. asked you to wash his car,

  116. he'll give you 20 bucks.

  117. All right?

  118. Good deal.

  119. But you've got to do it properly.

  120. 20 bucks, wash the car

  121. and you finish washing the car,

  122. you do your best job

  123. and later that night,

  124. no 20 bucks.

  125. It just so happens to be your birthday the next day

  126. and inside the birthday card,

  127. lo and behold,

  128. is 20 bucks

  129. and he goes,

  130. happy birthday.

  131. Would you consider that a gift?

  132. I wouldn't.

  133. Like, you owe me that,

  134. where's my gift?

  135. There is no gift.

  136. It's only what I'm rightly owed,

  137. thank you very much, Dad.

  138. You agree to that.

  139. If a person was to do any work,

  140. religious or otherwise,

  141. to earn their acceptance with God,

  142. God owes you.

  143. You've earned it.

  144. It would be a payment,

  145. not a gift.

  146. You'd have something to boast in.

  147. By the strength of my own flesh,

  148. I did that.

  149. You owe me.

  150. And we've already seen verse 5,

  151. God's righteousness as a gift

  152. comes simply by trusting God's promise.

  153. It wasn't after Abraham defeated his enemies

  154. and rescued Lot.

  155. It wasn't when he was circumcised.

  156. It wasn't when he was obedient,

  157. offering up Isaac.

  158. It was way before then

  159. that Abraham is counted as righteous,

  160. simply by hearing God's promise and believing.

  161. And Paul probably brings in David,

  162. a psalm of David,

  163. to give a second witness from Scripture

  164. to underscore the point that this really is

  165. what God wants from us,

  166. faith alone.

  167. In fact,

  168. it's crucial

  169. that he doesn't count what you do

  170. towards your final verdict

  171. or you'd be stuffed.

  172. Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven

  173. and whose sins are covered.

  174. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord

  175. will never count his sin.

  176. These are the words of David

  177. who after the scandal with Bathsheba

  178. and the murder of Uriah,

  179. there's a bigger scandal.

  180. God says to him after that,

  181. the law,

  182. he should have died.

  183. And he says,

  184. you will not die.

  185. There's the scandal.

  186. There's a bigger scandal.

  187. How can God say that to him?

  188. The first reason we can be sure

  189. God only wants faith

  190. is that God will only relate to you

  191. on the basis of gift,

  192. not payment.

  193. God won't be in debt to anyone.

  194. From him,

  195. through him,

  196. to him are all things.

  197. What can you give to God

  198. that he owes you?

  199. Zilch.

  200. Nothing.

  201. God owes you nothing

  202. except judgment.

  203. Righteousness is a totally free gift.

  204. He doesn't count what you do

  205. and thank God for that.

  206. He will only relate to you

  207. on the basis

  208. of his free gift,

  209. not payment.

  210. So you can be sure

  211. it's by faith.

  212. The second reason we have

  213. that we can be sure

  214. it's by faith

  215. is in verses 9 to 12

  216. where the word circumcision

  217. appears a bazillion times

  218. and you might get lost in it

  219. but I think the point

  220. is fairly clear.

  221. And there's an enormous

  222. effect that this has.

  223. It's speaking,

  224. it's really important,

  225. this paragraph.

  226. It speaks to us

  227. if we're not Jews.

  228. A Jewish person

  229. would refer to circumcision

  230. as a shorthand way

  231. of saying

  232. that they are

  233. the children of the promise,

  234. they're the children of Abraham.

  235. They live under God's law,

  236. they're heirs of God's promise

  237. of blessing,

  238. of inheriting the world.

  239. But who are the descendants

  240. of Abraham

  241. who inherit this promise?

  242. So Paul notes,

  243. he argues from the fact

  244. that Abraham is justified

  245. by faith,

  246. the rabbis thought,

  247. 29 years

  248. before

  249. he was circumcised.

  250. Way before he was circumcised,

  251. he was counted righteous.

  252. The Jews thought circumcision

  253. was a sign

  254. that pointed forward

  255. to the law.

  256. Whereas Paul says no,

  257. circumcision was a sign

  258. that pointed back

  259. to the righteousness

  260. he already had

  261. by faith.

  262. So my wedding ring

  263. signifies being married.

  264. But putting on a ring

  265. didn't make me married.

  266. It was the promises,

  267. it was the covenant

  268. that was entered into

  269. through the promises.

  270. The ring just symbolises it.

  271. So,

  272. Abraham

  273. Abraham is the father

  274. of all those

  275. who follow in his footsteps

  276. in the faith

  277. that he had.

  278. Whether Jews

  279. who had faith

  280. and they expressed that faith

  281. by keeping the law,

  282. but it was the faith

  283. that counted them

  284. as descendants of Abraham.

  285. Or whether non-Jews

  286. who just had the faith

  287. of Abraham.

  288. That is who

  289. is part of the spiritual family.

  290. That is who inherits

  291. the promise.

  292. I think we can sometimes

  293. think of the Old Testament

  294. as like,

  295. God set up the law,

  296. okay,

  297. obey the law

  298. in order to be right

  299. with me,

  300. and that kind of failed.

  301. So,

  302. let's try Jesus instead.

  303. Let's lower the bar

  304. to faith.

  305. That's not the story

  306. of the Bible.

  307. It has always been faith.

  308. Abraham all the way through.

  309. Being right with God

  310. has always been by faith,

  311. and that's why

  312. we can be sure

  313. that faith

  314. is what God wants.

  315. So,

  316. what's the big deal

  317. about being a child

  318. of Abraham?

  319. I've got the song

  320. that Father Abraham

  321. and many sons,

  322. I don't know if you know it,

  323. and then you do

  324. this weird kind of

  325. dancing thing.

  326. I think it's kind of ironic

  327. that you're so exhausted

  328. by being a child

  329. of Abraham

  330. when the fact is

  331. he wasn't justified

  332. by works,

  333. he's justified by faith.

  334. But anyway,

  335. that's beside the point.

  336. Who cares if you're

  337. a son of Abraham or not?

  338. Verse 11 is why

  339. it is so important to you.

  340. He received the sign

  341. of circumcision

  342. as a seal of righteousness

  343. he had by faith

  344. while still uncircumcised.

  345. The purpose was

  346. to make him

  347. the father of all

  348. who believe

  349. without being circumcised

  350. so that

  351. righteousness

  352. would be counted

  353. to them

  354. as well.

  355. If you want

  356. righteousness

  357. counted to you,

  358. you need to be

  359. a child of Abraham

  360. and walk

  361. in the footsteps

  362. of his faith.

  363. God has always

  364. given his promise

  365. through faith.

  366. The third reason

  367. you can be sure

  368. God wants faith alone

  369. to be right with him

  370. verses 13 to 16,

  371. the promise

  372. didn't come

  373. through the law.

  374. Jews thought

  375. of Abraham

  376. that it was

  377. his obedience

  378. that secured

  379. the blessings

  380. of God,

  381. the blessings

  382. in the promise.

  383. So a child

  384. of Abraham

  385. needs to keep

  386. the law

  387. like Abraham

  388. did.

  389. But what would

  390. happen if God's

  391. promises came good

  392. by both believing

  393. and keeping the law?

  394. Verse 14 tells us

  395. what would happen.

  396. If it is the adherence

  397. of the law

  398. who would be

  399. the heirs,

  400. faith is null

  401. and the promise

  402. is void.

  403. So what's that saying?

  404. Being void.

  405. That word is used

  406. in 1 Corinthians 15

    1 Corinthians 15:14

  407. verse 14.

  408. Faith is in vain,

  409. is void,

  410. if Christ has not

  411. been raised

  412. from the dead.

  413. It's basically saying

  414. it won't come good.

  415. It will fail

  416. if it's based

  417. on the law

  418. as well as faith.

  419. Why is that?

  420. Verse 15.

  421. Because the law

  422. can't give you

  423. righteousness.

  424. What it can give you

  425. is wrath.

  426. The strange phrase

  427. where there is no law

  428. there is no transgression.

  429. Sometimes I'm

  430. driving along

  431. and I just don't know

  432. that it's a

  433. a school zone

  434. and I'm going

  435. 20km

  436. over the limit.

  437. Now that's bad.

  438. That's dangerous.

  439. But what's way worse

  440. is if I see

  441. those flashing signs

  442. saying 40

  443. slow down

  444. and I still

  445. choose

  446. to transgress

  447. and go 60.

  448. Isn't that worse?

  449. I think that's

  450. what's going on here.

  451. The law

  452. can't

  453. produce righteousness.

  454. It says

  455. here's what it is

  456. to be righteous

  457. and all Jews

  458. have transgressed

  459. that law

  460. and so the wrath

  461. is even greater.

  462. Here's the positive news.

  463. Verse 16.

  464. That is why

  465. it depends

  466. on faith

  467. in order

  468. that the promise

  469. may rest

  470. on

  471. grace

  472. not works

  473. and be

  474. guaranteed

  475. to all

  476. his offspring.

  477. for the promise

  478. to take effect

  479. if it required

  480. your obedience

  481. frankly

  482. you would

  483. stuff it up.

  484. It would fail.

  485. I would

  486. stuff it up.

  487. But it doesn't

  488. rest on

  489. our obedience.

  490. It rests

  491. on his

  492. grace.

  493. And if God

  494. is committed

  495. to keeping

  496. his promise

  497. it can't

  498. fail.

  499. It is

  500. guaranteed.

  501. If God

  502. is determined

  503. to freely

  504. give his

  505. promise

  506. the inheritance

  507. is guaranteed

  508. to each

  509. person

  510. who believes.

  511. Righteousness

  512. is by faith

  513. alone

  514. so it depends

  515. on God's

  516. grace

  517. alone

  518. and so

  519. the promise

  520. is guaranteed.

  521. At this point

  522. I think

  523. Paul gives us

  524. a picture

  525. of what faith

  526. is.

  527. What is

  528. the faith

  529. of Abraham

  530. then?

  531. What is

  532. this faith

  533. we're to

  534. share in?

  535. I think

  536. we get

  537. three lovely

  538. phrases

  539. and we

  540. get a

  541. picture

  542. of what

  543. faith is.

  544. One of

  545. the lovely

  546. phrases

  547. is verse

  548. 18.

  549. In hope

  550. Abraham

  551. believed

  552. against

  553. hope.

  554. So we'll

  555. come back

  556. to that.

  557. Then we've

  558. got verse

  559. 21.

  560. Fully

  561. convinced

  562. that God

  563. was able

  564. to do

  565. what he

  566. had

  567. promised.

  568. So there's

  569. two sides

  570. to faith.

  571. There's what

  572. you don't

  573. put your

  574. faith in

  575. and what

  576. you do

  577. put your

  578. faith in.

  579. When

  580. Abraham

  581. looked at

  582. the evidence

  583. and just

  584. used common

  585. sense,

  586. if you want

  587. to use

  588. common sense,

  589. he saw

  590. his own

  591. body which

  592. was as

  593. good as

  594. dead.

  595. Sorry for

  596. anyone who's

  597. approaching 100.

  598. being about

  599. 100 years

  600. old,

  601. how's he

  602. going to

  603. produce an

  604. heir?

  605. How's

  606. Sarah going

  607. to produce

  608. an heir

  609. when she's

  610. approaching 90?

  611. The deadness

  612. of her

  613. womb.

  614. All he

  615. could see

  616. with his

  617. eyes said

  618. that it

  619. was not

  620. possible to

  621. have an

  622. heir.

  623. I think

  624. maybe more

  625. than just a

  626. biological

  627. impossibility,

  628. I wonder

  629. if they

  630. consider

  631. themselves under

  632. the curse

  633. of God.

  634. I'm not

  635. sure.

  636. So looking

  637. at just

  638. evidence and

  639. common sense,

  640. there's no

  641. hope.

  642. But when

  643. you consider

  644. God staring

  645. up into the

  646. night sky

  647. that the

  648. Lord created

  649. all this

  650. out of

  651. nothing,

  652. if the

  653. Lord of

  654. heaven and

  655. earth says

  656. that something

  657. is and

  658. will be,

  659. it's as

  660. good as

  661. if it

  662. all exists.

  663. this.

  664. And here's

  665. that third

  666. description of

  667. faith,

  668. verse 17.

  669. God who

  670. gives life

  671. to the

  672. dead and

  673. calls into

  674. existence the

  675. things that

  676. do not

  677. exist.

  678. That is the

  679. object of

  680. our faith.

  681. The God

  682. who gives

  683. life to

  684. the dead

  685. and calls

  686. into existence

  687. the things

  688. that do

  689. not exist.

  690. against all

  691. hope in

  692. human reason

  693. and common

  694. sense,

  695. he looked

  696. at who

  697. God is,

  698. what God

  699. promised,

  700. and he

  701. took God

  702. at his

  703. word.

  704. And so

  705. Paul,

  706. in verses

  707. 23 to

  708. 25,

  709. he connects

  710. it to all

  711. Christian faith,

  712. all Christians.

  713. Paul says

  714. that what was

  715. written about

  716. Abraham wasn't

  717. just written

  718. for his sake,

  719. it was written

  720. for our sake

  721. so that we

  722. would hear it.

  723. So that we

  724. would know

  725. for sure,

  726. God is

  727. speaking to

  728. you and

  729. me.

  730. Jesus was

  731. the one to

  732. make good

  733. the promises

  734. to Abraham,

  735. to bless all

  736. the families

  737. of the world.

  738. So Abraham

  739. believed the

  740. God who

  741. promised,

  742. we believe

  743. the God

  744. who fulfilled

  745. that promise

  746. in Jesus

  747. Christ,

  748. to bless

  749. the world.

  750. To believe

  751. the promise

  752. in the gospel

  753. is the same

  754. faith as

  755. Abraham's.

  756. It requires

  757. you to

  758. believe that

  759. God brings

  760. life out

  761. of death,

  762. that God

  763. will justify

  764. the ungodly,

  765. those who

  766. deserve death

  767. are given

  768. life,

  769. that it is

  770. all God's

  771. doing,

  772. trusting that

  773. God took the

  774. initiative,

  775. it is what

  776. he does that

  777. matters,

  778. that he

  779. offered up,

  780. delivered up

  781. his only son

  782. for our

  783. trespasses,

  784. to never

  785. count what

  786. we do

  787. against us,

  788. and then

  789. raised him

  790. for our

  791. justification.

  792. The resurrection

  793. declares loudly

  794. to the whole

  795. world that

  796. Jesus is

  797. right with

  798. God,

  799. he is

  800. righteous.

  801. If you want

  802. to be righteous,

  803. you need to be

  804. bound up in

  805. him,

  806. and the way

  807. to do that

  808. is faith,

  809. faith alone.

  810. If you want

  811. to be right

  812. with God

  813. as Jesus

  814. is,

  815. you need

  816. to be

  817. attached to

  818. Jesus,

  819. you need

  820. to be

  821. hidden in

  822. Jesus.

  823. So how

  824. can we be

  825. sure that

  826. faith is

  827. what God

  828. wants?

  829. As we

  830. look at

  831. Abraham,

  832. because he

  833. doesn't count

  834. against us

  835. the sin we

  836. do,

  837. he only

  838. will give

  839. us righteousness

  840. as a free

  841. gift.

  842. It's always

  843. been by faith

  844. through all

  845. history,

  846. and the

  847. promise is

  848. guaranteed,

  849. it can't

  850. fail because

  851. it doesn't

  852. depend on

  853. obedience,

  854. it depends

  855. on his

  856. grace.

  857. So I'd

  858. like to

  859. ask two

  860. questions,

  861. in case

  862. there's a

  863. few barriers

  864. in your

  865. mind,

  866. having heard

  867. all this.

  868. Perhaps

  869. the most

  870. looming

  871. question is

  872. how do

  873. I have

  874. faith then?

  875. How do

  876. I have

  877. it?

  878. I think

  879. at this

  880. point,

  881. our

  882. language

  883. in

  884. Christian

  885. circles

  886. isn't

  887. all too

  888. helpful

  889. when we

  890. say

  891. making a

  892. decision

  893. to

  894. follow

  895. Christ.

  896. Your

  897. willpower

  898. doesn't

  899. produce

  900. faith.

  901. You

  902. can't

  903. muster

  904. it up.

  905. Even

  906. faith is

  907. a gift

  908. of God.

  909. If you

  910. think of

  911. Abraham

  912. when he

  913. heard the

  914. promise,

  915. if you're

  916. watching him,

  917. the moment

  918. God

  919. declared him

  920. righteous,

  921. what would

  922. you see

  923. him do

  924. to express

  925. faith?

  926. He's just

  927. staring up

  928. into the

  929. sky.

  930. You

  931. wouldn't see

  932. anything.

  933. God saw

  934. his heart.

  935. What

  936. produced the

  937. faith is

  938. what I'm

  939. getting at.

  940. Did he do

  941. anything?

  942. All we

  943. would hear

  944. is God's

  945. word to

  946. him,

  947. so shall

  948. your

  949. offspring

  950. be.

  951. It was

  952. those words

  953. that produced

  954. the faith

  955. in Abraham.

  956. So I'm

  957. indebted to

  958. the ex-principal

  959. at Moore

  960. College,

  961. John Woodhouse,

  962. who spoke

  963. at our

  964. camp just

  965. before COVID,

  966. wasn't it?

  967. I can't

  968. believe COVID

  969. has been

  970. wrapped around

  971. with church

  972. camp,

  973. either side.

  974. Just a

  975. gift of

  976. God to

  977. us.

  978. He's

  979. helped

  980. me,

  981. he's

  982. clarified in

  983. my mind

  984. at least,

  985. where faith

  986. comes from.

  987. So here's

  988. what he

  989. says.

  990. Where there

  991. is the

  992. word of

  993. God and

  994. faith in

  995. God because

  996. of that

  997. word,

  998. there is

  999. the totality

  1000. of

  1001. Christianity.

  1002. That is

  1003. Christianity.

  1004. The

  1005. Christian life

  1006. of faith in

  1007. both Old

  1008. and New

  1009. Testaments

  1010. and in

  1011. the experience

  1012. of believers

  1013. down the

  1014. centuries and

  1015. across the

  1016. world,

  1017. is brought

  1018. into being

  1019. and nourished

  1020. and brought

  1021. to maturity

  1022. by God's

  1023. word.

  1024. I just

  1025. find that

  1026. incredibly

  1027. helpful.

  1028. You don't

  1029. produce the

  1030. faith, it's

  1031. the word of

  1032. God that

  1033. produces faith

  1034. in you.

  1035. Faith is

  1036. hearing and

  1037. receiving what

  1038. God says.

  1039. You can do

  1040. lots of

  1041. things.

  1042. You can

  1043. immerse

  1044. yourself in

  1045. God's

  1046. word, you

  1047. can surround

  1048. yourself with

  1049. God's people

  1050. so that you're

  1051. hearing God's

  1052. word, you

  1053. can think

  1054. critically about

  1055. what society

  1056. says life is

  1057. all about.

  1058. You can do

  1059. all those

  1060. things but

  1061. it's the

  1062. word of

  1063. God itself

  1064. that produces

  1065. the faith.

  1066. So it

  1067. calls us to

  1068. humbly and

  1069. sincerely engage

  1070. with God and

  1071. take him in

  1072. his word.

  1073. God's

  1074. word.

  1075. God's

  1076. word.

  1077. God's

  1078. God's

  1079. word.

  1080. Maybe you're

  1081. feeling overwhelmed

  1082. by the lack of

  1083. evidence of

  1084. faith in your

  1085. life.

  1086. You look at all

  1087. the evidence,

  1088. the mountain of

  1089. sin just in the

  1090. past week,

  1091. your failings,

  1092. the doubts and

  1093. fears that are

  1094. raging in your

  1095. mind and heart,

  1096. maybe the apathy,

  1097. the sufferings

  1098. you experience

  1099. and is God

  1100. judging me?

  1101. You consider your

  1102. impending death,

  1103. like I don't know

1104. what it is for you.

  1105. you look at the

  1106. evidence and you

  1107. might be going,

  1108. I'm not sure

  1109. faith is there.

  1110. But it's

  1111. against all

  1112. hope.

  1113. Will you

  1114. hope in

  1115. the God who

  1116. gives life to

  1117. the dead?

  1118. Here's how

  1119. John Calvin

  1120. put it.

  1121. Let us also

  1122. remember that the

  1123. condition of us

  1124. all is the same

  1125. with that of

  1126. Abraham.

  1127. All things

  1128. around us are

  1129. in opposition

  1130. to the promises

  1131. of God.

  1132. He promises

  1133. immortality.

  1134. We are surrounded

  1135. by mortality

  1136. and corruption.

  1137. He declares

  1138. that he counts

  1139. us just.

  1140. We are covered

  1141. with sins.

  1142. He testifies

  1143. that he is

  1144. kind to us.

  1145. Outward judgments

  1146. threaten his

  1147. wrath.

  1148. What then is

  1149. to be done?

  1150. We must with

  1151. closed eyes

  1152. pass by

  1153. ourselves

  1154. and all

  1155. things connected

  1156. to us

  1157. that nothing

  1158. may hinder

  1159. or prevent

  1160. us from

  1161. believing

  1162. that God

  1163. is

  1164. true.

  1165. Against

  1166. all the

  1167. evidence of

  1168. your life

  1169. do you

  1170. look away

  1171. from yourself

  1172. look at what

  1173. Jesus has done

  1174. for you

  1175. and take God

  1176. at his word

  1177. when he says

  1178. justify

  1179. you are

  1180. justified

  1181. you are at

  1182. peace

  1183. with me

  1184. I give

  1185. you no

  1186. wrath

  1187. only grace

  1188. when you

  1189. look into

  1190. your future

  1191. all that's

  1192. in your

  1193. future

  1194. is the

  1195. hope

  1196. of glory

  1197. do we

  1198. take him

  1199. at his

  1200. word

  1201. against

  1202. all hope

  1203. in hope

  1204. do we

  1205. believe

  1206. his word

  1207. some

  1208. might be

  1209. fearing

  1210. that you

  1211. don't

  1212. have

  1213. enough

  1214. faith

  1215. to get

  1216. you over

  1217. the line

  1218. with

  1219. Abraham

  1220. set up

  1221. as the

  1222. model

  1223. of faith

  1224. who didn't

  1225. waver

  1226. no

  1227. unbelief

  1228. fully

  1229. convinced

  1230. yikes

  1231. I'm not

  1232. sure I've

  1233. got enough

  1234. faith

  1235. that doesn't

  1236. seem to

  1237. describe me

  1238. I'm

  1239. inconsistent

  1240. in my

  1241. faith

  1242. the quality

  1243. of my

  1244. faith

  1245. I don't

  1246. know

  1247. but do you

  1248. remember the

  1249. story of

  1250. Abraham

  1251. what follows

  1252. chapter 15

  1253. after a

  1254. decade or

  1255. so

  1256. still no

  1257. son

  1258. what does

  1259. he do

  1260. he sleeps

  1261. with his

  1262. maidservant

  1263. what an

  1264. idiot

  1265. sorry

  1266. he

  1267. takes

  1268. matters

  1269. into his

  1270. own

  1271. hand

  1272. trying to

  1273. produce the

  1274. promise

  1275. by his

  1276. own

  1277. efforts

  1278. God

  1279. speaks to

  1280. him

  1281. again

  1282. when he's

  1283. almost

  1284. 100

  1285. years

  1286. old

  1287. in

  1288. chapter

  1289. 17

  1290. and

  1291. this

  1292. time

  1293. he

  1294. is

  1295. a

  1296. promise

  1297. he

  1298. laughs

  1299. he

  1300. goes

  1301. come on

  1302. God

  1303. just

  1304. fulfill

  1305. your

  1306. promise

  1307. through

  1308. Ishmael

  1309. through

  1310. my

  1311. efforts

  1312. it's

  1313. not

  1314. that

  1315. Abraham

  1316. never

  1317. doubted

  1318. or that

  1319. he

  1320. always

  1321. lived

  1322. in

  1323. light

  1324. of

  1325. the

  1326. promise

  1327. I

  1328. think

  1329. a

  1330. commentator

  1331. put it

  1332. well

  1333. in

  1334. that

  1335. he

  1336. avoided

  1337. a

  1338. deep

  1339. seated

  1340. and

  1341. permanent

  1342. attitude

  1343. of

  1344. distrust

  1345. he

  1346. grew

  1347. strong

  1348. in

  1349. faith

  1350. over

  1351. time

  1352. he

  1353. had

  1354. to

  1355. learn

  1356. not

  1357. to

  1358. put

  1359. confidence

  1360. in

  1361. himself

  1362. that's

  1363. the

  1364. Christian

  1365. walk

  1366. that's

  1367. the

  1368. walk

  1369. we're

  1370. all

  1371. on

  1372. living

  1373. in

  1374. light

  1375. of

  1376. the

  1377. promise

  1378. that's

  1379. ours

  1380. not

  1381. in

  1382. light

  1383. of

  1384. the

  1385. evidence

  1386. with

  1387. our

  1388. eyes

  1389. his

  1390. justification

  1391. occurred

  1392. way

  1393. back

  1394. remember

  1395. on

  1396. that

  1397. starry

  1398. night

  1399. when

  1400. he

  1401. believed

  1402. God's

  1403. promise

  1404. to

  1405. him

  1406. in

  1407. that

  1408. moment

  1409. justification

  1410. was

  1411. sorted

  1412. he

  1413. was

  1414. right

  1415. with

  1416. God

  1417. it's

  1418. not

  1419. the

  1420. strength

  1421. of

  1422. your

  1423. faith

  1424. that

  1425. counts

  1426. it's

  1427. the

  1428. strength

  1429. of the

  1430. one

  1431. you

  1432. have

  1433. faith

  1434. in

  1435. that's

  1436. the

  1437. only

  1438. thing

  1439. that

  1440. matters

  1441. someone

  1442. used

  1443. the

  1444. illustration

  1445. and

  1446. I'm

  1447. just

  1448. going

  1449. to

  1450. steal

  1451. it

  1452. I

  1453. don't

  1454. know

  1455. who

  1456. to

  1457. attribute

  1458. this

  1459. to

  1460. but

  1461. if

  1462. you

  1463. imagine

  1464. the

  1465. Passover

  1466. in

  1467. Egypt

  1468. that

  1469. night

  1470. when

  1471. God

  1472. sent

  1473. the

  1474. death

  1475. of the

  1476. firstborn

  1477. son

  1478. over

  1479. if

  1480. you

  1481. imagine

  1482. that

  1483. night

  1484. and

  1485. you've

  1486. got

  1487. two

  1488. Israelite

  1489. families

  1490. and

  1491. they've

  1492. both

  1493. sacrificed

  1494. a

  1495. lamb

  1496. and

  1497. they've

  1498. painted

  1499. the

  1500. doorway

  1501. of

  1502. their

  1503. house

  1504. like

  1505. one

  1506. one

  1507. of

  1508. the

  1509. parents

  1510. might

  1511. have

  1512. been

  1513. sleeping

  1514. soundly

  1515. going

  1516. yeah

  1517. God

  1518. will

  1519. keep

  1520. his

  1521. promise

  1522. the

  1523. other

  1524. one

  1525. might

  1526. have

  1527. been

  1528. just

  1529. up

  1530. all

  1531. night

  1532. sweating

  1533. drops

  1534. I don't

  1535. know if

  1536. blood is

  1537. appropriate to

  1538. say but

  1539. absolutely

  1540. concerned

  1541. is an

  1542. understatement

  1543. that their

  1544. child is

  1545. going to

  1546. die

  1547. I'm

  1548. not

  1549. sure

  1550. if

  1551. anyone

  1552. got

  1553. much

  1554. sleep

  1555. that

  1556. night

  1557. did

  1558. all

  1559. that

  1560. fear

  1561. count

  1562. it

  1563. didn't

  1564. matter

  1565. that

  1566. doubt

  1567. if there

  1568. was any

  1569. doubt

  1570. that doesn't

  1571. count

  1572. what counted

  1573. was they took

  1574. God at his

  1575. word

  1576. and the

  1577. sacrifice

  1578. the blood

  1579. that's what

  1580. counted

  1581. they took

  1582. him in his

  1583. word

  1584. so the

  1585. question for

  1586. us is

  1587. is the

  1588. blood of

  1589. Jesus

  1590. your only

  1591. hope

  1592. is it

  1593. painted

  1594. over your

  1595. life

  1596. is the

  1597. blood of

  1598. Jesus

  1599. your only

  1600. hope

  1601. of being

  1602. right with

  1603. God

  1604. and receiving

  1605. blessing

  1606. from God

  1607. the strength

  1608. of your

  1609. faith doesn't

  1610. matter

  1611. but if you

  1612. think

  1613. it's the

  1614. strength of

  1615. Jesus

  1616. what he

  1617. has done

  1618. that matters

  1619. there's one

  1620. final reason

  1621. and I'm

  1622. finishing on

  1623. this

  1624. there's one

  1625. final reason

  1626. in this

  1627. passage

  1628. that we

  1629. can have

  1630. confidence

  1631. that it's

  1632. faith alone

  1633. that God

  1634. wants

  1635. to think

  1636. in our

  1637. hearts

  1638. and our

  1639. minds

  1640. and to

  1641. live in

  1642. such a

  1643. way that

  1644. says

  1645. that we

  1646. don't put

  1647. confidence

  1648. in ourselves

  1649. but in

  1650. Jesus

  1651. alone

  1652. that we

  1653. receive

  1654. righteousness

  1655. as a

  1656. gift

  1657. guaranteed

  1658. by his

  1659. grace

  1660. even with

  1661. the evidence

  1662. of our

  1663. lives

  1664. the sin

  1665. the doubt

  1666. the suffering

  1667. even

  1668. against all

  1669. that

  1670. if we

  1671. know we

  1672. can't earn

  1673. God's

  1674. blessing

  1675. by anything

  1676. we do

  1677. that's a

  1678. life of

  1679. humility

  1680. it's a

  1681. life where

  1682. there is

  1683. no boasting

  1684. you've got

  1685. nothing to

  1686. boast in

  1687. I've

  1688. contributed

  1689. nothing

  1690. not even

  1691. my faith

  1692. God's

  1693. word

  1694. produced

  1695. that

  1696. there is

  1697. no boasting

  1698. I think

  1699. that can

  1700. give us

  1701. confidence

  1702. that that

  1703. that is

  1704. the life

  1705. of faith

  1706. because

  1707. God gets

  1708. all the

  1709. glory from

  1710. beginning to

  1711. end

  1712. it's his

  1713. doing

  1714. to rely

  1715. on God's

  1716. promise

  1717. his grace

  1718. alone

  1719. boast

  1720. in Jesus

  1721. alone

  1722. he gets

  1723. all the

  1724. credit

  1725. it's his

  1726. resurrection

  1727. power

  1728. it's his

  1729. trustworthiness

  1730. it's his

  1731. sovereign

  1732. freedom

  1733. to give

  1734. freely

  1735. not because

  1736. he owes

  1737. you

  1738. it's his

  1739. grace

  1740. that makes

  1741. the promise

  1742. it's his

  1743. grace that

  1744. keeps the

  1745. promise

  1746. it's his

  1747. love that

  1748. offered up

  1749. his son

  1750. he gets

  1751. all the

  1752. glory

  1753. by faith

  1754. alone

  1755. and I

  1756. think

  1757. that's why

  1758. the life

  1759. of the

  1760. Christian

  1761. is

  1762. meant to

  1763. be

  1764. characterised

  1765. by singing

  1766. he gets

  1767. the praise

  1768. he gets

  1769. we boast

  1770. in him

  1771. alone

  1772. so I

  1773. think we're

  1774. going to

  1775. sing now

  1776. amazing

  1777. grace

  1778. he gets

  1779. all the

  1780. glory

  1781. when we

  1782. believe

  1783. that our

  1784. righteousness

  1785. is by

  1786. faith

  1787. alone

  1788. so

  1789. why don't

  1790. we sing

  1791. together

  1792. to

  1793. do

  1794. to

  1795. and

  1796. to

  1797. do

  1798. to

  1799. do

  1800. to

  1801. to
