  1. Good morning, church family.

  2. So the Bible reading for this session is Deuteronomy chapter 12,

    Deuteronomy 12 chapter mention

  3. and we're going to be reading from verses 1 to 18.

  4. So that's Deuteronomy chapter 12, verses 1 to 18.

    Deuteronomy 12:1–18

  5. These are the statutes and rules that you shall be careful to do in the land that the Lord,

  6. the God of your fathers, has given you to possess, all the days that you live on the earth.

  7. You shall surely destroy all the places where the nations whom you shall dispossess serve their gods,

  8. on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree.

  9. You shall tear down their altars and dash in pieces their pillars and burn their ashram with fire.

  10. You shall chop down the carved images of their gods and destroy their name out of that place.

  11. You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way,

  12. but you shall seek the place that the Lord your God will choose out of all your tribes

  13. to put his name and make his habitation there.

  14. There you shall go and there you shall bring your burnt offerings and your sacrifices,

  15. your tithes and the contribution that you present, your vow offerings, your freewill offerings

  16. and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock.

  17. And there you shall eat before the Lord your God and you shall rejoice,

  18. you and your households, in all that you undertake, in which the Lord your God has blessed you.

  19. You shall not do according to all that we are doing here today,

  20. everyone doing whatever is right in his own eyes.

  21. For you have not as yet come to the rest and to the inheritance that the Lord your God is giving you.

  22. But when you go over the Jordan and live in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to inherit,

  23. and when he gives you rest from all your enemies around so that you live in safety,

  24. then to the place that the Lord your God will choose to make his name dwell there,

  25. there you shall bring all that I command you,

  26. your burnt offerings and your sacrifices,

  27. your tithes and the contribution that you present,

  28. and all your finest vow offerings that you vow to the Lord.

  29. And you shall rejoice before the Lord your God,

  30. you and your sons and your daughters,

  31. your male servants and your female servants,

  32. and the Levite that is within your towns,

  33. since he has no portion or inheritance with you.

  34. Take care that you do not offer your burnt offerings at any place that you see,

  35. but at the place that the Lord will choose in one of your tribes.

  36. There you shall offer your burnt offerings,

  37. and there you shall do all that I am commanding you.

  38. However, you may slaughter and eat meat within any of your towns as much as you desire,

  39. according to the blessing of the Lord your God that he has given you.

  40. The unclean and the clean may eat of it, as of the gazelle and as of the deer.

  41. Only you shall not eat the blood, you shall pour it out on the earth like water.

  42. You may not eat within your towns the tithe of your grain,

  43. or of your wine or of your oil,

  44. or the firstborn of your herd or of your flock,

  45. or any of your vow offerings that you vow,

  46. or your freewill offerings,

  47. or the contribution that you present.

  48. But you shall eat them before the Lord your God,

  49. in the place that the Lord your God will choose,

  50. you and your son and your daughter,

  51. your male servant and your female servant,

  52. and the Levite who is within your towns.

  53. And you shall rejoice before the Lord your God,

  54. in all that you undertake.

  55. weisem & Grodus

  56. Thank you.

  57. We had four chapters in the first talk.

  58. We had seven in the second talk.

  59. And we have 14 in this talk.

  60. But don't despair because we're not going to run through 14 chapters at all.

  61. We're going to just pick and choose.

  62. I don't know if you've heard the story before of the police cadets who are doing an exam.

  63. And the question says, you're driving down the road, you, young policeman, policewoman,

  64. and you come across a huge accident where cars have all crashed into one another.

  65. One of them has hit a fire hydrant.

  66. Water is pouring into the air.

  67. There's a large dog that has just bitten a small boy.

  68. A young man has just grabbed the handbag of a lady and is running off.

  69. People have begun looting some of the shops that have been hit.

  70. And in the distance you see a fire has broken out on the third floor of a nearby building.

  71. What is your first course of action?

  72. And one of the police students wrote, carefully remove uniform and mingle with crowds.

  73. And there are those times where you think, let me out of here.

  74. Don't despair as we come to our third session.

  75. It's going to be manageable.

  76. And what I've tried to do, if you're new and this is your first time,

  77. is we've tried to look through the book of Deuteronomy, which is 34 chapters,

  78. and we've tried to walk through it quite quickly.

  79. Because as I was saying to somebody over morning tea,

  80. we either take a couple of little bits and you say, yeah, well, that's great.

  81. What's the big book about?

  82. Or we attempt to do what we're doing, which is to walk through it.

  83. So if you're here for the first time, let me tell you that Deuteronomy is set out like

  84. a treaty between God and his people as they are about to go into the promised land.

  85. And the first four chapters are basically Moses recapping the trip so far.

  86. The next chapters 5 to 11 are talking about the relationship that God has with his people,

  87. full of privilege and also responsibility.

  88. Not that the responsibility will create the security.

  89. God will create the security.

  90. But there needs to be a response.

  91. Now we're going to come to what is really the unpacking of the Ten Commandments.

  92. And so if you are reading chapters 12 to 26,

  93. you would notice that the chapters correspond fairly closely with the Ten Commandments.

  94. Let me show you what I mean.

  95. Deuteronomy 12, which we just had read for us,

  96. has to do with worshipping God, commandment 1.

  97. Deuteronomy 13 has to do with idolatry, commandment 2.

  98. Deuteronomy 14 has to do with who you are, commandment 3.

  99. Deuteronomy 15 to 16 has to do with feasts, or we might say Sabbath, commandment 4.

  100. Deuteronomy 17, 18 has to do with authority figures, judges, priests, prophets, kings.

  101. We might call that the parental, commandment 5.

  102. Deuteronomy 19 to 21 has to do with fighting and war.

  103. We might call that commandment 6.

  104. And Deuteronomy 22 to 24 has to do with marriage.

  105. We might call that commandment 7.

  106. And Deuteronomy 25, 26 is a range of thoughts on the subject of honesty and greed, etc.

  107. So some people say, no, no, this is too clever.

  108. It's not really the unpacking of the commandments.

  109. But many people think it is, and I think it is.

  110. And so if somebody said, well, commandment number 1, worship God, what does that look like?

  111. Deuteronomy 12 spells it out in very practical details for the people of Israel.

  112. Can I remind you that Israel, picture the million people.

  113. That's a nation.

  114. They need laws to do with taxes and land rights and armies.

  115. But they're also a church.

  116. And so they need rules to do with ceremony and sacrifice and forgiveness and thanksgiving to God.

  117. They're a nation and they're a church.

  118. And therefore, when we read Deuteronomy 12 to 26, although a lot of what is there is not relevant to us.

  119. Animals you can eat, animals you can't eat.

  120. But it's still instructive.

  121. It's still informative.

  122. Because it tells us what God was doing with his people.

  123. And the principles are useful for us today.

  124. So that's why Jesus can say that it's all written about him.

  125. Because in the end, it's all bringing us to him.

  126. Interesting that the popular religions today, think of your friends who would say they were Buddhists,

  127. have got, you'll notice, no authority over them.

  128. So convenient, isn't it?

  129. Nobody tells me what to do.

  130. But God is an authority.

  131. And his authority is a loving, safekeeping authority.

  132. Now, I thought that I would pick a few bits of the commandments from this section.

  133. And so you'll see on your outline that I've tried to pick commandment 1, 3, 6 and 7.

  134. And we'll just look at those quite quickly.

  135. Okay?

  136. Are you with me?

  137. Did any of that make sense?

  138. I'm going to pretend it did.

  139. Commandment 1, Deuteronomy 12.

  140. You remember how the chapter begins?

  141. And I'll just remind you of the first couple of verses.

  142. Where Moses says, these are the statues and judgments in the land which the Lord your God's giving you.

  143. First thing, destroy the idols.

  144. Then verse 9, 5.

  145. Verse 5.

  146. Seek the place where the Lord your God chooses.

  147. Those of you who remember the great John Chapman may remember him telling a story where somebody comes up to him in the break and brings him a cup of tea with three sugars and white milk.

  148. And Chapo says, well, that's very kind of you.

  149. I actually drink black coffee, no sugar.

  150. And the simple point is that the person wanted to be helpful but didn't listen to what actually he was looking for.

  151. And it's typical John Chapman illustration.

  152. So simple.

  153. But there are so many people who think, I'll give God what I think he wants.

  154. But we need to listen very carefully to what he says he wants.

  155. And it's here in Deuteronomy chapter 12.

    Deuteronomy 12 chapter mention

  156. First thing is you enter the promised land, get rid of the idols.

  157. Destroy them, break them down, smash them, get rid of them.

  158. Because, verse 3, you're not to worship God like this, Yahweh like this.

  159. This is a big issue for believers when they come from animist religions.

  160. And they have to somehow get rid of the infection and the infiltration and the contamination of their old faith.

  161. God is not to be fitted in to something else.

  162. Everything is to be fitted into what he asks.

  163. And as I mentioned, the idols of Canaan were very attractive.

  164. And so getting rid of them was a costly thing to do but infinitely worthwhile.

  165. And then, says the Lord, verse 5, seek the place the Lord chooses.

  166. Bring the appropriate sacrifices, verse 6, verse 7, because I want you to rejoice.

  167. How interesting.

  168. God says, worship where I say and worship how I say because I want you to be happy.

  169. Now, the place, of course, eventually would be Jerusalem.

  170. But, obviously, Moses in Deuteronomy is not talking about a specific place like Jerusalem.

  171. He just says, when God says this is the place to worship him, that's the place to worship him.

  172. Eventually, it will be Jerusalem.

  173. And you're to bring the sacrifices that God asks for.

  174. So, chapter 12, verse 8, don't do as you see fit.

  175. But go to his place with his sacrifices and the joy will follow.

  176. Well, the worship of God, you see, is like chopping a log.

  177. If you chop with the grain, the axe moves much more carefully.

  178. If you try to chop against the grain, it's much more difficult.

  179. And this section of worshipping God as he calls us to reminds us how Jesus in John 4 said that we should worship him in spirit and truth.

  180. It's not enough just to be sincere.

  181. It's possible to be sincere but wrong.

  182. I'm always disappointed with people in churches who say, I don't read my Bible but I do pray.

  183. And I think I hate those relationships.

  184. When nobody ever listens, they just talk.

  185. And we must treat God as somebody who not only will listen to us but who speaks to us.

  186. We must hear him and we must speak to him.

  187. And, of course, when we hear him, we'll speak to him more wisely, more carefully.

  188. And then, of course, the place where we meet God today is not a building.

  189. We may hear the gospel in a building but the place we meet him is Jesus.

  190. That's why Jesus described himself as the temple where we will meet God.

  191. And the sacrifice that we need to relate to God is Jesus.

  192. And the joy that comes from this is Jesus' joy.

  193. So this chapter 12 is a very wonderful call to take seriously the God of the first commandment.

  194. The devil, of course, comes along and offers us all sorts of alternatives.

  195. But you'll discover down those roads that he's fooled you.

  196. We're slow learners.

  197. We keep going down dopey roads.

  198. But eventually, in the goodness of God, we come back and humbly agree that he's right.

  199. So that's commandment number one.

  200. Commandment number two.

  201. Sorry, commandment number three, which relates to Deuteronomy 14,

  202. seems to be the commandment about being God's special people.

  203. Now, how do you identify as God's people in the world today?

  204. You could wear the cross around your neck.

  205. You could get a great tattoo indicating you're a believer.

  206. But in the end, the way that you're going to show yourself to be the people of Jesus

  207. is going to have a lot more to do with what comes up from the heart.

  208. Now, when we get to the end of this session, there's going to be a Q&A.

  209. And I forgot to say how helpful it would be if you think of some good questions.

  210. Because there's nothing worse in a Q&A when there's dead quiet.

  211. And then finally, somebody says,

  212. Do you think there's life on Jupiter?

  213. And I say, I don't.

  214. And then we hang around for another five minutes waiting for somebody to say,

  215. Have you ever eaten a shark?

  216. And I say, no.

  217. Those Q&As are terrible.

  218. Try to think of some good questions that emerge from Deuteronomy

  219. or from your Christian life.

  220. And that will make everything buzz along.

  221. And if I don't know the answer,

  222. I'll just call on many of the great pastors who are in this room to help us out.

  223. But the Q&A can be great if you make it great.

  224. So dive in with your questions.

  225. Let's go to Commandment 3, Deuteronomy 14.

  226. We didn't read this chapter.

  227. It seems to be about being the people of God.

  228. And verses 1 to 2 are very interesting.

  229. And I will read them to you.

  230. And then I'll tell you a little more.

  231. First of all, Chapter 14, 1 and 2.

  232. Imagine this is the unpacking of Commandment 3.

  233. You're the children of the Lord your God.

  234. You shall not cut yourselves nor shave the front of your head for the dead.

  235. For you're a holy people to the Lord your God.

  236. And the Lord has chosen you to a people for himself,

  237. a special treasure above all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

  238. The rest of the chapter has to do with clean and unclean animals.

  239. And the last bit has to do with tithing.

  240. So what does this have to do with being a believer today?

  241. Can you imagine studying this in your own small group or your youth group

  242. or trying to preach this to your congregation?

  243. And you think, well, what will I do with this?

  244. But let me ask you this.

  245. If you lived in the peoples of the land

  246. and you were not the people of Yahweh

  247. and one of your relatives died,

  248. tragically,

  249. why might you cut yourself?

  250. Why might you shave your head in a strange and distraught way?

  251. Why might you do that?

  252. Any thoughts?

  253. I've got two possibilities.

  254. To show your grief, your distress.

  255. Yes.

  256. Yeah.

  257. The other possibility?

  258. To?

  259. Oh, to buy something.

  260. A bargaining.

  261. A bargaining.

  262. Yes, I hadn't thought about that.

  263. Yeah.

  264. Is this a way of appeasing the gods

  265. and getting some reprieve?

  266. I've got another possibility

  267. and it relates to 1 Kings 19.

  268. Manipulation is a good word for it.

  269. It's the prophets of Baal

  270. trying to get the attention of Baal

  271. by slashing themselves.

  272. So can you imagine a pagan faced with death

  273. and they start cutting themselves,

  274. the family?

  275. What are they doing?

  276. They could be grieving.

  277. This is so distressing.

  278. They could be saying,

  279. I'm doing this to make sure that I can buy favour

  280. or it could be that they're saying,

  281. oh God, gods, gods, gods up there

  282. or whoever you are,

  283. please take notice.

  284. Step in and do something.

  285. Come on, help us out.

  286. And you can see how terrible and distressing that is

  287. and you can see why Moses says to the people of Israel,

  288. don't do that.

  289. You're not going to do that.

  290. When it comes to death,

  291. you're not going to do that

  292. because in the end,

  293. the people of Israel have got some clues

  294. that death is not the end.

  295. There are little hints, aren't there,

  296. in the Old Testament,

  297. shadowy ideas that death is not the end.

  298. Can you think of any from the Old Testament?

  299. I'll give you an example.

  300. Psalm 23,

  301. Another example from the Old Testament?

  302. Enoch walking with God.

  303. Yeah, there's an unusual situation.

  304. Elijah disappearing.

  305. Yeah, David, when his son died,

  306. he said he will not come back to me

  307. but I'll go to be with him.

  308. Paul?

  309. That's too clever an answer.

  310. I just wanted a simple answer

  311. from the ordinary people,

  312. from the plebs,

  313. not the clergy kids.

  314. That's terrific.

  315. I'm thinking of things like Job.

  316. I know that my Redeemer lives,

  317. chapter 19.

  318. And even if this body perishes,

  319. yet in my flesh will I see God.

  320. What an amazing diamond

  321. to come up from the book of Job.

  322. Psalm 23,

  323. Enoch,

  324. Elijah,

  325. Psalm 16,

  326. treasures at your right hand.

  327. There's a whole lot of little shadowy things.

  328. Daniel chapter 12,

    Daniel 12 chapter mention

  329. the dead will rise from the dust.

  330. Pictures of the resurrection

  331. in the Old Testament.

  332. But if you were to ask

  333. the people of Israel,

  334. what's your clue for the future?

  335. They can't quote Psalm 23.

  336. It hasn't happened yet.

  337. They can't quote Psalm 16.

  338. They can't possibly quote the book of Job.

  339. But Jesus would say to them

  340. exactly what Paul just said.

  341. God is the God of Abraham,

  342. Isaac and Jacob.

  343. Do you remember when Jesus

  344. was being challenged by the Sadducees

  345. and they mocked him

  346. for the whole idea of a future?

  347. And they made up that story

  348. of the lady who died

  349. after having been married seven times

  350. and whose wife will she be?

  351. And laugh, laugh, laugh,

  352. mock, mock, mock.

  353. You know, there's no future.

  354. And Jesus said,

  355. God is the God

  356. of Abraham,

  357. Isaac and Jacob.

  358. It's not he was the God

  359. of Abraham,

  360. Isaac and Jacob.

  361. He is the God

  362. of Abraham,

  363. Isaac and Jacob.

  364. Because when you come

  365. into a covenant with God,

  366. how could that break?

  367. How could that break?

  368. And we know from the New Testament

  369. that death cannot break the covenant

  370. because of Christ taking death for us.

  371. And so Deuteronomy 14

  372. is previewing the importance

  373. of the people of God,

  374. even in the Old Testament,

  375. having a confidence in Yahweh

  376. in the face of death.

  377. And no wonder Paul takes up

  378. the whole principle

  379. in 1 Thessalonians 4

  380. where he says,

  381. we're to grieve,

  382. but not as those without hope.

  383. And so you'll know

  384. if you go to the funeral

  385. of a pagan,

  386. I mean, imagine the funeral

  387. that's coming up

  388. for Shane Warne.

  389. It will be full of grief

  390. and it will be full of memories.

  391. But unless I'm mistaken,

  392. there'll be no hope.

  393. There'll be no gospel.

  394. There'll be no future.

  395. There'll be no glory.

  396. It will just be grief

  397. and memories.

  398. It'll just be looking backwards.

  399. And the mark of the Christian funeral

  400. is that we're able

  401. to look back and look forward.

  402. We're able to grieve

  403. and we're able to hope.

  404. And we don't have to just do one

  405. and not the other.

  406. And that's why the funeral

  407. of the believer

  408. is better than just

  409. 25 helium balloons

  410. going up into the air.

  411. And what is said

  412. at a Christian funeral

  413. may be very feeble,

  414. but what's said

  415. on the other side of the river,

  416. welcome,

  417. is very precious.

  418. For the pagan,

  419. what's said on this side

  420. of the river

  421. may be very grand,

  422. the MCG,

  423. the SCG,

  424. filled with people,

  425. but what's said

  426. on the other side

  427. of the river,

  428. that's more significant,

  429. isn't it?

  430. The terrible thought

  431. of coming to the other side

  432. of the river

  433. and for the Lord Jesus

  434. to say,

  435. I don't know you.

  436. Depart.

  437. It's a really big issue.

  438. And Deuteronomy 14

  439. in these strange

  440. first two verses

  441. is raising this fantastic issue

  442. that the believers

  443. are to live in the world

  444. with a past

  445. and a future.

  446. And the world

  447. is only marked

  448. so much by the past.

  449. I read a book recently

  450. called Mortals,

  451. written by two psychologists

  452. in the eastern suburbs

  453. of Sydney,

  454. and their argument

  455. is basically

  456. that you've got to just learn

  457. to live with the fact

  458. that you're mortal,

  459. so make the most of your life

  460. because there's nothing

  461. to come.

  462. And the book then argues

  463. that all religions

  464. are basically games

  465. that people play

  466. to invent

  467. some kind of future.

  468. And I wrote to them

  469. and I said,

  470. look,

  471. I don't think

  472. you've done justice

  473. to the fact

  474. of the person of Christ

  475. who genuinely lived

  476. and genuinely died

  477. and if you look

  478. at the evidence,

  479. genuinely rose.

  480. And I don't see

  481. how you can dismiss

  482. the sensible faith

  483. of two billion people

  484. in the resurrection.

  485. So that's the context

  486. of the world we live in,

  487. isn't it?

  488. No wonder Deuteronomy 14

  489. is a great challenge

  490. to the people of Yahweh

  491. to live differently

  492. in the world.

  493. Now the second bit

  494. in Deuteronomy 14

  495. has to do with the food laws

  496. and I didn't get anybody

  497. to read these

  498. because they're so funny

  499. and we would find ourselves

  500. sort of laughing.

  501. You know,

  502. you can eat the ox,

  503. the sheep,

  504. the goat,

  505. the deer,

  506. the gazelle,

  507. the rose deer,

  508. the wild goat,

  509. the mountain goat,

  510. the antelope.

  511. But you can't eat

  512. the swine.

  513. I can't see

  514. how the rest of it

  515. all fits together.

  516. You shall not eat

  517. the eagle,

  518. the vulture,

  519. the buzzard,

  520. the red kite,

  521. the falcon,

  522. the kite,

  523. raven,

  524. ostrich,

  525. short-eared owl,

  526. seagull,

  527. hawk.

  528. What is going on?

  529. What is going on?

  530. You can imagine

  531. the unbeliever

  532. who sort of comes

  533. across this chapter

  534. says this is a fantastic

  535. chapter to whip

  536. the people of God with

  537. because why aren't

  538. they doing this?

  539. And which of you

  540. have gone to the

  541. supermarket this week

  542. and carefully avoided

  543. the red kite?

  544. Now what's going on

  545. in these verses?

  546. The answer is that

  547. these are not

  548. unhygienic animals.

  549. We know that

  550. because there came a time

  551. where Jesus said

  552. you can eat

  553. whatever you want to.

  554. It's not a hygiene issue.

  555. It's not even a

  556. this is what the pagans

  557. in the promised land

  558. eat now

  559. so don't eat them.

  560. This is sheer sovereignty

  561. of God.

  562. This is just the absolute

  563. decision-making power

  564. of God.

  565. This is in,

  566. this is out.

  567. This is clean,

  568. this is unclean.

  569. Watch carefully.

  570. And so the people of God

  571. every time they went

  572. to the shops

  573. they would be remembering

  574. that there was a clean

  575. and an unclean.

  576. And every time

  577. they sat at breakfast

  578. and every time

  579. they sat at their lunch table

  580. and every time

  581. they sat at their dinner table

  582. they would remember

  583. that there was a clean

  584. and an unclean.

  585. And God had made them clean.

  586. Why?

  587. Deuteronomy 7

  588. because he loved them.

  589. That's all.

  590. And there's an unclean

  591. amongst whom they live

  592. to whom they have a mission.

  593. So all of this teaching

  594. on the animals to be eaten

  595. and the animals not to be eaten

  596. are to teach the people of God

  597. every day

  598. that God is a God

  599. who has his own people

  600. to reach the lost.

  601. The food laws of course

  602. were abolished

  603. in the New Testament

  604. by Jesus

  605. because he paid the price

  606. of our failures

  607. but he also

  608. has brought in

  609. a cleanness

  610. which has got nothing

  611. to do with rule keeping

  612. and animals

  613. but has got to do

  614. with forgiveness

  615. and a new heart.

  616. And so

  617. we're not the sort of people

  618. who are interested

  619. so much in external

  620. ritual

  621. as internal change.

  622. Well how do we show

  623. our distinctiveness?

  624. We show it mostly

  625. by asking the Lord

  626. to fill and rule our heart

  627. so that when we walk

  628. into the day

  629. he might help us

  630. to think, say

  631. and do the things

  632. that would mark us

  633. as his people.

  634. And a huge part

  635. of witness today

  636. is not cleverness

  637. it's just faithfulness.

  638. And as I said last night

  639. it's sometimes

  640. being asked a question

  641. and giving an honest answer.

  642. A small, short, honest answer.

  643. Do you remember

  644. Colson

  645. the right hand man

  646. of the President Nixon

  647. who was so tough

  648. they said he would

  649. sacrifice his grandmother

  650. if the decision

  651. required it.

  652. And he was deeply

  653. impressed by a man

  654. called Tom Phillips

  655. who in the midst

  656. of the White House

  657. was just such a nice man.

  658. And eventually

  659. Colson went round

  660. to see him

  661. this tough, tough Colson

  662. and Tom Phillips

  663. opened up

  664. mere Christianity

  665. and read to him

  666. from C.S. Lewis

  667. and the whole subject

  668. of pride.

  669. And Colson went back

  670. to his car

  671. and he sat at the wheel

  672. of his car

  673. and the evening

  674. was pouring with rain

  675. he said there was

  676. more water in the car

  677. than there was

  678. outside the car

  679. because he was

  680. so convicted

  681. you know

  682. tears rolling down

  683. his face.

  684. And it came through

  685. the example

  686. of a guy

  687. just living

  688. like a believer

  689. and that's the sort

  690. of thing

  691. that you can do.

  692. And the way

  693. you live

  694. amongst your people

  695. just asking

  696. the Lord

  697. to help you

  698. to be distinctive

  699. is so important

  700. and you've no idea

  701. where it will lead.

  702. The last words

  703. in chapter 14

  704. have to do

  705. with tithing

  706. and basically

  707. it's just teaching

  708. the community

  709. that they're not

  710. just to be grasping

  711. people

  712. but giving people.

  713. And

  714. that's of course

  715. what the gospel does

  716. doesn't it?

  717. It changes you

  718. from being just

  719. a taker

  720. and there's

  721. nothing so satisfying

  722. as seeing the gospel

  723. change somebody's

  724. heart so that

  725. they become

  726. spontaneously generous.

  727. I'm working

  728. in a little church

  729. in the eastern suburbs

  730. I've just been there

  731. for a year

  732. it's a building

  733. that holds 600 people

  734. there's about 40

  735. who come

  736. and it's

  737. kind of shocked

  738. me to realise

  739. that probably

  740. 35 of them

  741. are not believers

  742. and the giving

  743. is kind of nothing.

  744. People are literally

  745. getting out two coins

  746. and putting it

  747. in the offertory bag

  748. because their heart

  749. has not been changed

  750. but when the heart

  751. gets changed

  752. everything is opened

  753. and freed

  754. and generosity

  755. flows.

  756. I just want to point out

  757. to you one unusual

  758. verse 1421

  759. which has always

  760. intrigued me

  761. and I've now worked

  762. out what it is

  763. and so I'm going

  764. to tell you

  765. and this will be

  766. a groundbreaking

  767. moment for all of you

  768. it's a small joke

  769. 1421

  770. you shall not eat

  771. anything

  772. what does he say

  773. at the end

  774. at the end

  775. of verse 21

  776. you shall not

  777. boil a young goat

  778. in its mother's milk

  779. you shall not

  780. boil a young goat

  781. in its mother's milk

  782. and believe it or not

  783. commentators have

  784. agonised

  785. over what this

  786. was all about

  787. and I think

  788. it's a proverb

  789. I think

  790. it represents

  791. a saying

  792. which is something

  793. like this

  794. don't take

  795. what is meant

  796. to

  797. be good

  798. for you

  799. and turn it

  800. into something

  801. which

  802. kills you

  803. don't turn

  804. perhaps the law

  805. of God

  806. which is meant

  807. to bless you

  808. and make it

  809. something

  810. which will

  811. destroy you

  812. don't take

  813. the milk

  814. of a mother

  815. which is meant

  816. to feed a baby

  817. and cook

  818. that baby

  819. in the milk

  820. the baby kid

  821. I think

  822. that's what

  823. it's about

  824. I think

  825. at the end

  826. of the chapter

  827. that Moses

  828. is saying

  829. don't mix

  830. up the categories

  831. of God

  832. and end up

  833. destroying yourself

  834. with what should

  835. help you

  836. so that's the

  837. second command

  838. we're looking at

  839. the third one

  840. chapter 20

  841. which I've

  842. called

  843. commandment

  844. 6

  845. and it's

  846. got to do

  847. with going

  848. to war

  849. and it's just

  850. worth looking at

  851. especially in the

  852. light of what's

  853. happening in the

  854. north of the

  855. world at the

  856. moment

  857. because some

  858. people may

  859. say and

  860. think well

  861. this is the

  862. sort of thing

  863. that God

  864. does

  865. I preached

  866. on Deuteronomy

  867. 20 in my

  868. church and a

  869. couple left

  870. the church

  871. after the

  872. sermon

  873. forever

  874. because they

  875. were offended

  876. by the chapter

  877. and they said

  878. we don't believe

  879. God could do

  880. this

  881. in Deuteronomy

  882. 19

  883. we're told

  884. there are to

  885. be safe

  886. cities

  887. where you

  888. can run

  889. to if

  890. you commit

  891. manslaughter

  892. before you

  893. get tried

  894. in chapter 21

  895. there's

  896. instruction about

  897. what to do

  898. if you find

  899. a body

  900. in a field

  901. but in

  902. chapter 20

  903. there is

  904. the will

  905. of God

  906. for the

  907. taking of

  908. the promised

  909. land

  910. and as I

  911. mentioned to

  912. you before

  913. this taking

  914. of the promised

  915. land is a

  916. one-off

  917. never to be

  918. repeated

  919. invasion

  920. it just

  921. doesn't come

  922. up again

  923. and again

  924. in the

  925. Bible

  926. it's just

  927. a one-off

  928. and we

  929. need to

  930. remember

  931. when we

  932. think about

  933. God

  934. taking the

  935. promised

  936. land

  937. remember

  938. there are

  939. a lot

  940. of people

  941. in the

  942. promised

  943. land

  944. we need

  945. to remember

  946. first that

  947. God

  948. owned the

  949. promised

  950. land

  951. as I

  952. said to

  953. you last

  954. night

  955. he waited

  956. four centuries

  957. for the

  958. people to

  959. turn to

  960. him

  961. but they

  962. didn't

  963. he

  964. communicated

  965. to the

  966. whole of

  967. the land

  968. because you

  969. remember

  970. Rahab the

  971. prostitute

  972. said we've

  973. all heard

  974. about

  975. Yahweh

  976. we've

  977. heard about

  978. the

  979. exodus

  980. we've

  981. heard about

  982. the crossing

  983. of the

  984. Red Sea

  985. this is a

  986. God of

  987. justice

  988. it's time

  989. for justice

  990. there's a

  991. time for

  992. justice

  993. but he's

  994. also merciful

  995. because he

  996. says you're

  997. to go to

  998. the towns

  999. around and

  1000. still offer

  1001. them

  1002. mercy

  1003. but of

  1004. course God

  1005. is a God

  1006. who keeps

  1007. his promises

  1008. and he's

  1009. promised in

  1010. the end

  1011. that he

  1012. will bring

  1013. his

  1014. judgment

  1015. can't

  1016. escape

  1017. that

  1018. he's a

  1019. judge

  1020. he's a

  1021. good judge

  1022. and he

  1023. obviously

  1024. is providing

  1025. for his

  1026. people a

  1027. promised land

  1028. as he

  1029. said he

  1030. would

  1031. and this

  1032. is also a

  1033. preview of

  1034. the glory

  1035. to come

  1036. so Deuteronomy

  1037. 20 is the

  1038. most amazing

  1039. procedure for

  1040. an invasion

  1041. look at

  1042. chapter 20

  1043. verse 1

  1044. Moses says

  1045. don't be afraid

  1046. God is with

  1047. you

  1048. can you

  1049. imagine

  1050. world war

  1051. one chaplains

  1052. going up to

  1053. the troops

  1054. or world war

  1055. two chaplains

  1056. or Afghani

  1057. chaplains

  1058. going up

  1059. and saying

  1060. to the

  1061. troops

  1062. let's

  1063. remember

  1064. that God

  1065. is with

  1066. us

  1067. you wouldn't

  1068. dare to

  1069. do that

  1070. what you

  1071. could do

  1072. is say

  1073. let's pray

  1074. that God

  1075. would be

  1076. with us

  1077. but this

  1078. is God's

  1079. war

  1080. and so

  1081. the priest

  1082. is to say

  1083. God is

  1084. with you

  1085. then he

  1086. says in

  1087. verses 2

  1088. to 4

  1089. you're going

  1090. to be

  1091. victorious

  1092. so don't

  1093. let your

  1094. heart faint

  1095. don't be

  1096. afraid

  1097. don't tremble

  1098. don't be

  1099. terrified

  1100. the Lord

  1101. your God

  1102. is with

  1103. you

  1104. to fight

  1105. for you

  1106. against

  1107. your enemies

  1108. to save

  1109. you

  1110. he's going

  1111. to win

  1112. this war

  1113. it's a

  1114. winning

  1115. war

  1116. third he

  1117. says go

  1118. home if

  1119. you've got

  1120. a new

  1121. house

  1122. and you'd

  1123. like to

  1124. work on

  1125. the house

  1126. go home

  1127. if you've

  1128. got a new

  1129. vineyard

  1130. and you'd

  1131. like to

  1132. pick some

  1133. grapes

  1134. go home

  1135. if you've

  1136. got a

  1137. new

  1138. fiance

  1139. go home

  1140. if you

  1141. feel

  1142. frightened

  1143. kind of

  1144. gives you

  1145. plenty of

  1146. escape

  1147. doesn't

  1148. it

  1149. in other

  1150. words

  1151. God is

  1152. not

  1153. dependent

  1154. on the

  1155. numbers

  1156. for the

  1157. battle

  1158. if he's

  1159. left with

  1160. ten people

  1161. he'll do

  1162. it with

  1163. ten

  1164. if he's

  1165. got

  1166. ten thousand

  1167. he'll do

  1168. it with

  1169. ten thousand

  1170. and then

  1171. verse ten

  1172. of chapter

  1173. twenty

  1174. offer peace

  1175. to the

  1176. cities

  1177. nearby

  1178. but there'll

  1179. be no

  1180. peace for

  1181. the cities

  1182. in the

  1183. midst of

  1184. the

  1185. promised

  1186. land

  1187. and

  1188. this

  1189. battle

  1190. that is

  1191. to take

  1192. place

  1193. is a

  1194. really

  1195. serious

  1196. sobering

  1197. battle

  1198. but it's

  1199. not as

  1200. serious

  1201. as the

  1202. battle

  1203. that's

  1204. described

  1205. in

  1206. revelation

  1207. which is

  1208. a massive

  1209. global

  1210. battle

  1211. a

  1212. judgment

  1213. of very

  1214. great

  1215. proportions

  1216. remember

  1217. that the

  1218. Bible

  1219. is descriptive

  1220. of invasion

  1221. not

  1222. prescriptive

  1223. does that

  1224. make sense

  1225. the Bible

  1226. describes

  1227. this

  1228. invasion

  1229. it does

  1230. not

  1231. prescribe

  1232. an

  1233. invasion

  1234. the

  1235. Quran

  1236. prescribes

  1237. an

  1238. invasion

  1239. the

  1240. Bible

  1241. does

  1242. not

  1243. and at

  1244. the very

  1245. end of

  1246. Deuteronomy

  1247. 20

  1248. we're told

  1249. that they

  1250. are to

  1251. look after

  1252. the fruit

  1253. trees

  1254. of the

  1255. land

  1256. don't

  1257. attack

  1258. the fruit

  1259. trees

  1260. of the

  1261. land

  1262. what a

  1263. funny

  1264. thing

  1265. to say

  1266. why does

  1267. Moses say

  1268. don't attack

  1269. the fruit

  1270. trees

  1271. of the

  1272. land

  1273. well

  1274. because

  1275. you're

  1276. going to

  1277. be living

  1278. there

  1279. and

  1280. therefore

  1281. if you

  1282. need

  1283. wood

  1284. don't

  1285. cut

  1286. down

  1287. the

  1288. fruit

  1289. trees

  1290. cut

  1291. down

  1292. the

  1293. other

  1294. trees

  1295. but

  1296. don't

  1297. cut

  1298. down

  1299. the

  1300. fruit

  1301. trees

  1302. because

  1303. you're

  1304. going to

  1305. be

  1306. living

  1307. there

  1308. and

  1309. the

  1310. fruit

  1311. trees

  1312. of

  1313. the

  1314. Bible

  1315. are

  1316. such

  1317. a

  1318. beautiful

  1319. theme

  1320. in

  1321. the

  1322. Bible

  1323. you've

  1324. got

  1325. fruit

  1326. trees

  1327. in

  1328. Genesis

  1329. and

  1330. then

  1331. you've

  1332. got

  1333. fruit

  1334. trees

  1335. in

  1336. the

  1337. promised

  1338. land

  1339. and

  1340. then

  1341. at

  1342. the

  1343. end

  1344. of

  1345. the

  1346. Bible

  1347. chapter

  1348. is

  1349. if

  1350. you

  1351. were

  1352. to

  1353. preach

  1354. it

  1355. I

  1356. think

  1357. it

  1358. would

  1359. be

  1360. very

  1361. important

  1362. to

  1363. explain

  1364. to

  1365. people

  1366. that

  1367. this

  1368. was

  1369. a

  1370. one-off

  1371. that

  1372. it

  1373. was

  1374. a

  1375. piece

  1376. of

  1377. justice

  1378. following

  1379. a

  1380. great

  1381. deal

  1382. of

  1383. mercy

  1384. and

  1385. that

  1386. in

  1387. the

  1388. end

  1389. the

  1390. Lord

  1391. Jesus

  1392. has

  1393. won

  1394. a

  1395. much

  1396. bigger

  1397. victory

  1398. which

  1399. we

  1400. can

  1401. take

  1402. part

  1403. in

  1404. and

  1405. escape

  1406. justice

  1407. and

  1408. receive

  1409. mercy

  1410. and

  1411. then

  1412. the

  1413. last

  1414. command

  1415. I

  1416. was

  1417. thinking

  1418. of

  1419. looking

  1420. at

  1421. is

  1422. command

  1423. number

  1424. seven

  1425. which

  1426. is

    Isaiah 21 chapter mention

  1427. chapters

  1428. 21

  1429. to

  1430. 24

  1431. and

  1432. I'll

  1433. just

  1434. say

  1435. very

  1436. quickly

  1437. that

  1438. when

  1439. you

  1440. read

  1441. these

  1442. chapters

  1443. that

  1444. have

  1445. to

  1446. do

  1447. with

  1448. taking

  1449. of

  1450. slaves

  1451. or

  1452. taking

  1453. captive

  1454. people

  1455. who've

  1456. been

  1457. conquered

  1458. in

  1459. battle

  1460. it

  1461. all

  1462. looks

  1463. terrible

  1464. to

  1465. us

  1466. but

  1467. actually

  1468. it

  1469. was

  1470. revolutionary

  1471. in

  1472. the

  1473. warfare

  1474. if

  1475. you

  1476. were

  1477. a

  1478. pagan

  1479. and

  1480. you

  1481. conquered

  1482. another

  1483. country

  1484. you

  1485. did

  1486. whatever

  1487. you

  1488. wanted

  1489. with

  1490. those

  1491. people

  1492. and

  1493. I

  1494. mean

  1495. whatever

  1496. you

  1497. wanted

  1498. but

  1499. God

  1500. says

  1501. no

  1502. when

  1503. you

  1504. find

  1505. people

  1506. who

  1507. are

  1508. the

  1509. victims

  1510. of

  1511. war

  1512. you're

  1513. to

  1514. look

  1515. after

  1516. them

  1517. you're

  1518. not

  1519. to

  1520. abuse

  1521. them

  1522. you're

  1523. to

  1524. care

  1525. for

  1526. them

  1527. you're

  1528. to

  1529. dress

  1530. them

  1531. you're

  1532. to

  1533. treat

  1534. them

  1535. with

  1536. dignity

  1537. they're

  1538. not

  1539. your

  1540. property

  1541. a

  1542. wife

  1543. is

  1544. not

  1545. to

  1546. be

  1547. just

  1548. grabbed

  1549. or

  1550. humiliated

  1551. and

  1552. if

  1553. you

  1554. do

  1555. take

  1556. her

  1557. for

  1558. a

  1559. wife

  1560. and

  1561. there

  1562. is

  1563. a

  1564. divorce

  1565. to

  1566. follow

  1567. she's

  1568. not

  1569. your

  1570. property

  1571. you've

  1572. got

  1573. to

  1574. look

  1575. after

  1576. her

  1577. it's

  1578. quite

  1579. revolutionary

  1580. I

  1581. think

  1582. that's

  1583. probably

  1584. enough

  1585. I

  1586. think

  1587. that's

  1588. probably

  1589. enough

  1590. there

  1591. are

  1592. the

  1593. little

  1594. tastes

  1595. of

  1596. the

  1597. commandments

  1598. being

  1599. unpacked

  1600. in

  1601. Deuteronomy

  1602. looking

  1603. at

  1604. the

  1605. practical

  1606. details

  1607. of

  1608. living

  1609. for

  1610. him

  1611. okay

  1612. it's

  1613. 12

  1614. o'clock

  1615. on the

  1616. dot

  1617. what time

  1618. was I

  1619. meant

  1620. to

  1621. finish

  1622. okay

  1623. okay

  1624. I'll

  1625. pray a

  1626. short

  1627. prayer

  1628. and then

  1629. I'll

  1630. just

  1631. see

  1632. if

  1633. you've

  1634. got

  1635. any

  1636. questions

  1637. that

  1638. you

  1639. would

  1640. like

  1641. to

  1642. ask

  1643. about

  1644. any

  1645. of

  1646. this

  1647. or

  1648. whether

  1649. anybody

  1650. lives

  1651. on

  1652. Jupiter

  1653. okay

  1654. let's

  1655. pray

  1656. heavenly

  1657. father

  1658. we thank

  1659. you

  1660. for the

  1661. very

  1662. wise

  1663. and

  1664. wonderful

  1665. words

  1666. that

  1667. you

  1668. gave

  1669. to

  1670. your

  1671. people

  1672. about

  1673. living

  1674. for

  1675. you

  1676. in

  1677. the

  1678. promised

  1679. land

  1680. we

  1681. thank

  1682. you

  1683. that

  1684. you

  1685. give

  1686. to

  1687. us

  1688. not

  1689. just

  1690. instructions

  1691. but

  1692. you

  1693. give

  1694. to

  1695. us

  1696. transformation

  1697. through

  1698. the

  1699. Lord

  1700. Jesus

  1701. and

  1702. we

  1703. pray

  1704. that

  1705. you

  1706. would

  1707. work

  1708. in

  1709. our

  1710. hearts

  1711. that

  1712. we

  1713. might

  1714. be

  1715. inwardly

  1716. not

  1717. just

  1718. new

  1719. people

  1720. but

  1721. in

  1722. your

  1723. goodness

  1724. faithful

  1725. and

  1726. even

  1727. fruitful

  1728. we

  1729. ask

  1730. it

  1731. in

  1732. Jesus

  1733. name

  1734. amen

  1735. okay

  1736. any

  1737. quick

  1738. thoughts

  1739. okay

  1740. so

  1741. the

  1742. first

  1743. one

  1744. there's

  1745. eight

  1746. questions

  1747. here

  1748. so

  1749. we'll

  1750. maybe

  1751. not

  1752. how

  1753. much

  1754. time

  1755. do

  1756. we

  1757. have

  1758. all

  1759. right

  1760. somebody

  1761. keep

  1762. a time

  1763. for me

  1764. then

  1765. okay

  1766. so

  1767. I've

  1768. got

  1769. names

  1770. but I

  1771. won't

  1772. mention

  1773. the

  1774. names

  1775. so

  1776. if

  1777. you

  1778. can

  1779. just

  1780. go

  1781. back

  1782. to

  1783. chapter

  1784. five

  1785. verse

  1786. two

  1787. to

  1788. start

  1789. with

  1790. and

  1791. while

  1792. you're

  1793. doing

  1794. that

  1795. I'll

  1796. read

  1797. one

  1798. question

  1799. here

  1800. but

  1801. I'm

  1802. going

  1803. to

  1804. break

  1805. the

  1806. rule

  1807. so

  1808. the

  1809. first

  1810. question

  1811. is

  1812. have

  1813. you

  1814. ever

  1815. eaten

  1816. a

  1817. shark

  1818. now

  1819. I

  1820. was

  1821. going

  1822. to

  1823. leave

  1824. these

  1825. anonymous

  1826. but

  1827. Elise

  1828. Smith

  1829. can

  1830. you

  1831. stand

  1832. up

  1833. please

  1834. stand

  1835. up

  1836. so

  1837. Simon

  1838. can

  1839. see

  1840. you

  1841. so

  1842. he

  1843. will

  1844. deal

  1845. with

  1846. you

  1847. be it

  1848. ever

  1849. so

  1850. severely

  1851. and

  1852. we

  1853. will

  1854. encourage

  1855. him

  1856. to

  1857. think

  1858. more

  1859. justice

  1860. than

  1861. mercy

  1862. at

  1863. this

  1864. point

  1865. okay

  1866. so

  1867. all

  1868. right

  1869. first

  1870. question

  1871. I'm

  1872. going

  1873. to

  1874. read

  1875. it

  1876. out

  1877. so

  1878. people

  1879. can

  1880. get

  1881. a

  1882. gist

  1883. of

  1884. it

  1885. and

  1886. give

  1887. you

  1888. 30

  1889. seconds

  1890. to

  1891. think

  1892. in

  1893. the

  1894. analogy

  1895. with

  1896. children

  1897. being

  1898. secured

  1899. in

  1900. a

  1901. trip

  1902. being

  1903. salvation

  1904. without

  1905. obedience

  1906. still

  1907. resulting

  1908. in

  1909. eternal

  1910. life

  1911. isn't

  1912. this

  1913. contradictory

  1914. with

  1915. where

  1916. it

  1917. says

  1918. that

  1919. if

  1920. you

  1921. disobey

  1922. the

  1923. cursing

  1924. will

  1925. fall

  1926. on

  1927. the

  1928. Israelites

  1929. from

  1930. the

  1931. Old

  1932. Testament

  1933. alternatively

  1934. in the

  1935. Bible

  1936. where it

  1937. warns about

  1938. falling

  1939. away

  1940. just

  1941. interested

  1942. to hear

  1943. your

  1944. opinion

  1945. on the

  1946. bounds

  1947. of

  1948. scripture

  1949. with

  1950. this

  1951. topic

  1952. that is

  1953. a great

  1954. question

  1955. I'm so

  1956. glad you

  1957. raised

  1958. it

  1959. in

  1960. Deuteronomy

  1961. you've

  1962. got the

  1963. promise of

  1964. blessing

  1965. and you've

  1966. got the

  1967. warning of

  1968. cursing

  1969. and in

  1970. the book

  1971. of

  1972. Hebrews

  1973. you've

  1974. got some

  1975. tremendous

  1976. promises

  1977. and some

  1978. very serious

  1979. warnings

  1980. I think

  1981. my question

  1982. is how

  1983. do we

  1984. consider these

  1985. promises and

  1986. warnings within

  1987. the covenant

  1988. people of

  1989. God

  1990. we can't

  1991. say that the

  1992. blessings will

  1993. make you

  1994. in a higher

  1995. position with

  1996. God than

  1997. Jesus has

  1998. given you

  1999. already

  2000. and we

  2001. can't say

  2002. that the

  2003. cursing

  2004. will put

  2005. you in a

  2006. lower position

  2007. or remove

  2008. you from

  2009. the people

  2010. of God

  2011. and we

  2012. desperately

  2013. need

  2014. promises

  2015. and warnings

  2016. they both

  2017. come from

  2018. a loving

  2019. God

  2020. my point

  2021. is simply

  2022. that we

  2023. have to

  2024. see both

  2025. of these

  2026. as coming

  2027. to the

  2028. family

  2029. on which

  2030. your

  2031. position

  2032. doesn't

  2033. hang

  2034. but the

  2035. way God

  2036. deals with

  2037. you in

  2038. assurance or

  2039. discipline

  2040. could follow

  2041. so it's a

  2042. very loaded

  2043. question and

  2044. I completely

  2045. agree the

  2046. person who

  2047. says I'm

  2048. going to be

  2049. disobedient

  2050. let's say

  2051. in the area

  2052. of greed

  2053. I'm going to

  2054. pursue greed

  2055. forever

  2056. well the

  2057. apostle Paul

  2058. would say

  2059. you've just

  2060. taken a road

  2061. that leads

  2062. you away

  2063. from the

  2064. kingdom

  2065. but I

  2066. wouldn't want

  2067. to fall

  2068. into the

  2069. trap of

  2070. saying you've

  2071. now just

  2072. lost your

  2073. salvation

  2074. because you

  2075. went on a

  2076. detour

  2077. I think I

  2078. would want to

  2079. say to the

  2080. person you've

  2081. gone on a

  2082. detour if you

  2083. keep that up it

  2084. looks like you're

  2085. not a believer

  2086. but somehow in

  2087. the providence of

  2088. God he may bring

  2089. you back so

  2090. we're always

  2091. walking a

  2092. careful twosome

  2093. promises and

  2094. warnings and I

  2095. don't want to

  2096. give the impression

  2097. to the people of

  2098. God that

  2099. their security

  2100. hangs on their

  2101. performance I

  2102. want them to

  2103. know it hangs

  2104. on the

  2105. performance of

  2106. Jesus but I

  2107. do want them to

  2108. know that how

  2109. God will treat

  2110. them as a

  2111. father has got

  2112. a lot to do

  2113. with the fact of

  2114. whether they want

  2115. to walk with

  2116. him or walk

  2117. against him and

  2118. I think we would

  2119. say that to our

  2120. children wouldn't

2121. we I mean if we

  2122. want to say to

  2123. our children we

  2124. love you whatever

  2125. happens sometimes

  2126. our love will look

  2127. like this sometimes

  2128. our love will look

  2129. like this I think

  2130. that's what I'm

  2131. trying to grapple

  2132. with come back if

  2133. that's not clear

  2134. I did want to

  2135. say a lot more

  2136. on eating shark

  2137. but I'll just

  2138. leave that for

  2139. another time

  2140. okay so I got

  2141. the questions out

  2142. of order there

  2143. again but now

  2144. go back to

  2145. chapter 5 verse

  2146. 2 or verse 3

  2147. sorry because the

  2148. question is around

  2149. that verse and the

  2150. question reads like

  2151. this if I heard

  2152. Simon correctly this

  2153. morning reading

  2154. from Deuteronomy

  2155. 5 3 he said

  2156. the Lord did not

  2157. make this covenant

  2158. just with our

  2159. fathers but with

  2160. us even us all

  2161. of us here

  2162. alive today and

  2163. then commented

  2164. that this clearly

  2165. indicated the

  2166. covenant was very

  2167. long-standing so

  2168. then it goes on

  2169. to say my

  2170. Bible in fact all

  2171. the Bibles I

  2172. have in phone

  2173. don't have the

  2174. word just the

  2175. insertion of just

  2176. completely changes

  2177. the meaning was

  2178. the covenant made

  2179. with the fathers

2180. if so why do so

  2181. many Bibles leave

  2182. out just I don't

  2183. have the Hebrew

  2184. text in front of

  2185. me but I think

  2186. the word just is

  2187. the meaning of the

  2188. verse even if it's

  2189. not the language of

  2190. the verse so are

  2191. we meant to assume

  2192. that the Lord didn't

  2193. make the covenant

  2194. with the fathers I

  2195. don't see that we

  2196. can do that I

  2197. think we have to

  2198. say that at Mount

  2199. Sinai he was making

  2200. a covenant with his

2201. people it was like a

  2202. marriage ceremony

  2203. but Moses is simply

  2204. making the point I

  2205. think in 5 3 that

  2206. this covenant is not

  2207. only with them but

  2208. with us in other

  2209. words we mustn't

  2210. imagine that what

  2211. took place in the

  2212. past has been lost

2213. it's for us we must

  2214. take it seriously

  2215. and in the next

  2216. section that we'll

  2217. look at he actually

  2218. asks them to enter

  2219. into the covenant

  2220. which I don't

  2221. think means become

  2222. believers or become

2223. the people of God I

  2224. think it means he

2225. wants them to ink it

2226. in or he wants them

  2227. to sign their names

  2228. in so it's a it's a

  2229. again it's it's a

  2230. great question and

  2231. it's a delicate

  2232. balance I think the

2233. point of the verse is

  2234. that it's the past

  2235. people and the present

  2236. people and of course

  2237. as you know the

  2238. covenant unfolds like

  2239. an opening door so

  2240. you've got a covenant

  2241. with creation and

  2242. then you've got a

  2243. covenant that takes

  2244. place pretty well with

  2245. Adam and Eve and

  2246. then you've got a

  2247. covenant with Abraham

  2248. and then you've got a

  2249. covenant with Moses and

2250. the people at Sinai and

  2251. then you've got a

  2252. covenant with David for

  2253. a kingdom and then

  2254. you've got in Jeremiah a

  2255. new covenant which will

  2256. reach the heart and

2257. then you come to Jesus

  2258. sitting around the table

2259. at the last supper and

2260. he says this is the new

2261. covenant in my blood it's

2262. that's the security of the

  2263. covenant so it's an

  2264. unfolding covenant

  2265. so sorry are you

  2266. saying then that the

  2267. difference in this

  2268. verse is a differentiation

2269. of the audience so it

  2270. wasn't it wasn't Abraham

  2271. Isaac and Jacob listening

2272. to it it was the people

2273. there around them it was

  2274. one covenant

  2275. differentiated is that

  2276. what you

  2277. I think I'm saying that

2278. the people who Moses was

  2279. speaking to were God's

  2280. people being told that

  2281. this unfolding covenant

2282. which had come to their

2283. fathers at Mount Sinai was

2284. very much for them but I'd

2285. be glad to if somebody

2286. wants to come back at it

  2287. please do because I I have

2288. lots to learn and if

  2289. somebody thinks that it

  2290. wasn't to the forefathers

2291. but it is only to Moses

2292. people I'd be interested to

2293. hear your thoughts on that

  2294. but I'm myself persuaded

  2295. Yes

  2296. Thank you

  2297. Thank you

2298. No, no, the Abraham covenant was that he would bless the earth.

2299. And then the Sinai covenant was that he would be the distinctive people of the earth.

2300. And then, of course, the David covenant was that there would be a kingdom.

2301. And then Jeremiah that it would be inward.

2302. And then Jesus that it would be sealed in blood.

2303. So I think that's how it unfolds.

  2304. It's a developing, wonderful covenant.

  2305. Okay, I hope that didn't confuse.

2306. And I'll be glad to hear more if you've got thoughts.

2307. Okay, next question then is, how do you see the world addressed to you, Simon?

2308. How do you see the world and the church still attempting to manipulate God today?

  2309. And that's referenced in Deuteronomy 14, 1 and 2.

2310. Well, as we know, the world is polarizing.

2311. So there is a great movement away from God.

2312. And there is a very religious world.

  2313. And they're both intensifying.

2314. It isn't one without the other.

2315. And I presume in the Western world, with this sort of rise of sophisticated atheism,

2316. that God is treated as non-existent or irrelevant until everything goes wrong.

2317. And so the Western world thinks of itself as being on the QE2 and can manage everything.

2318. Whereas the Bible says we're on the Titanic and we need quick help.

2319. And the church follows quite quickly and is not always very good at tackling the opposition of the world.

2320. And so I would say the world which is scoffing at God is dangerously causing the church in the present to be apologetic, defensive, reactionary,

2321. and at worst, changing the mission to make sure that nobody scoffs at us.

2322. And whenever God has done a great work in the church, it's to raise up people who just speak the truth with confidence

2323. and look at the position of the world as desperate.

2324. I think I've told you that I worked for a guy in the UK called Dick Lucas who's about to turn 97.

2325. And he's one of those people the Lord raises up every now and again who's just incredibly convicted.

2326. And it was no wonder people were glad to be with him because he was so sure of his faith.

2327. And I think a lot of it came from being on his knees with God and seeing carefully what was important.

2328. And when I went to work with him, I left Bondi Beach in Sydney and I went over as a 28-year-old dope

2329. and went into his office, which was above his house, which was in the middle of London, very near the Bank of England,

2330. surrounded by all the business houses, Lloyds of London.

2331. Everybody was running around on the street.

2332. I was looking down on the second level and they were all running around with their pinstripe suits

2333. and they had their bowler hats and their umbrellas.

2334. And I said to my new boss, who I'd just met for one minute, I said,

2335. do you feel a bit irrelevant?

  2336. And he said, lemmings.

  2337. Lemmings.

2338. The little animals that just run over a cliff.

2339. And he looked on the world around him as in desperate need.

2340. And he looked on his ministry as being desperately important.

2341. And that is a great perspective.

2342. And that's what we need to recover again.

2343. The next question is also on chapter 14, verse 1.

2344. Do you think that Deuteronomy chapter 14, verse 1 might also suggest the concept of soul sleep is wrong?

    Deuteronomy 14:1

2345. You shall not cut yourselves nor shave the front of your head for the dead.

2346. I'm not really sure what to say.

2347. It looks to me like this is a drastic action against your body.

2348. Would somebody like to unpack the question?

  2349. Yeah.

  2350. I'll ask the question.

2351. Well, I'm thinking if the deaths that they've all put together is so bad by it.

2352. Obviously, the struggle is going to be different.

2353. At this point, you don't have the same attitude.

  2354. Okay.

  2355. Okay.

2356. So, John is raising the question whether this reaction is for people who are committed to a soul sleep idea.

2357. Well, not just that, but the struggle is included.

  2358. Okay.

  2359. Okay.

2360. So, behind this, this could be people who believe in soul sleep and respond with cutting and shaving of head?

  2361. Yes.

  2362. They're depressed.

  2363. Okay.

  2364. They die.

2365. They don't think they're all in their tablets.

  2366. They're jacking them away.

  2367. Yeah.

  2368. Okay.

2369. They don't think they're all in their tablets.

2370. My difficulty with the question, John, is it looks as though you're saying these people have a hope called soul sleep.

2371. But it looks as though this reaction is hopeless.

  2372. Yeah.

2373. So, I don't think we know exactly, but it looks as though this is a reaction of despair.

2374. And I think in the face of that, the people of God are called to something different.

2375. But there's a PhD waiting to be done on this verse.

  2376. In your retirement.

  2377. Thank you.

  2378. Okay.

  2379. Okay.

2380. Now we're going to go to chapter 12, verse 16.

2381. In that chapter, it deals with the instructions for worship and framework around that.

2382. And the verse says, only you shall not eat the blood.

2383. So, it's in the context of what they can eat and what they can't eat.

2384. But don't eat the blood.

2385. You may not eat the blood, but you shall pour it out on the earth like water.

  2386. Question.

2387. Is there any significance or symbolism in pouring the animal's blood out on the ground?

2388. The blood, as you know, is the symbol for the life.

2389. And therefore, I think the Lord taught them not to despise the life.

2390. And in some of the more earthy verses of Leviticus, there's a fair discussion of sort of bodily fluids

2391. that have got a lot to do with life as well.

2392. And they are all to be treated very sort of reverently and respectfully, not sort of flippantly or carelessly.

2393. And so, pouring the blood onto the ground, I think, was a way of saying,

2394. the life is gone from this animal.

2395. But we are able to take the flesh for food.

2396. But we're not going to play with or muck around with the actual life which only God can give.

  2397. Something like that.

2398. I think that was the gist of it.

  2399. Okay.

  2400. Next question.

2401. Why such an extensive list of things to keep in the law if it is designed to highlight sin

2402. and our inability to keep the law?

2403. Surely even a single command would highlight this.

2404. Does the extent of the law actually diminish its ability to point out our sin,

2405. i.e. more excuse because it's so hard to keep up?

2406. Do you want to read that again?

  2407. No, no.

  2408. I think that's helpful.

2409. I think when it comes to the animals and birds and fish that could be eaten and couldn't be eaten,

2410. that was all pretty manageable.

2411. You just had to go down your shopping list and make sure you didn't take this, but you did take this.

2412. But the moral law is much more penetrating.

2413. So when you're dealing with the actual commandments, as Jesus said,

2414. if you think through the anger law to its end point, you will be convicted.

2415. And that's why, of course, the New Testament tells us the moral law is meant to lead us to Christ.

2416. It doesn't, of course, pick us up and take us to Christ.

  2417. It's helpless.

2418. But it tells us that we need a saviour.

2419. So the law in the Bible acts like an x-ray machine which doesn't solve anything except tell us we have a problem.

2420. And into that problem comes the surgeon who is Christ, who fixes.

2421. So I think the law that is in, say, Deuteronomy 14 is a manageable list, not too difficult.

  2422. Pick and choose.

2423. But the moral law was meant to be much more convicting and in God's goodness converting.

2424. Okay, so I think there must be one person out there getting a little bit tired of questions.

2425. The other question is, are there sharks on Jupiter?

  2426. Jupiter?

  2427. And you may well.

2428. I just have to work this out because somebody hasn't sent me a message before because their name doesn't come up on my screen.

2429. But I will work it out.

  2430. No, just press call.

2431. Somebody just fell off their chest.

2432. They've had time to put it on silent.

  2433. No, while I...

  2434. Yeah, all right.

  2435. Oh, no.

  2436. Okay.

2437. All right, we'll stop this.

  2438. It's your what?

  2439. No.

2440. No, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be her.

2441. Okay, where are we up to then?

2442. Right, back to here then.

  2443. Okay.

  2444. Okay.

2445. So this is chapter 14, commandment 2.

    Isaiah 14 chapter mention

2446. Don't give credence to pagan practices.

2447. How does this impact upon pagan introduced practices such as formal communion, hot cross bands, sun god celebration, stuff like that?

2448. Don't we, in reference to communion, don't we malpractice this as a directive was to reflect every time we eat or have communion, every time we gather to eat and drink, so each meal.

  2449. So let's...

  2450. Did that make it...

  2451. I didn't read that very well.

  2452. No, no, that's good.

  2453. That's a very thoughtful question.

2454. I hope this isn't getting too heavy, everybody.

  2455. These are great questions.

2456. I think the question that's just been asked is a little bit like Christmas and Santa.

2457. I don't know what your views are, but it seems to me that the believer has the opportunity of getting the best of both worlds in the best sense, and that we can have the hot cross bun, but we're looking for an opportunity to say the top of this bun is more significant than you realise.

2458. I mean, are we not able to despoil the Egyptians and have the treasures?

2459. But the important thing is that we don't mentally settle for the temporary, but that we're experiencing and enjoying the temporary and even using it to help people appreciate the eternal.

2460. I was about to get into the Santa question, but I realised that this is a reformed church, and I thought that might be too scary.

2461. But I think I'll just tell you that from our point of view, we would say to our children, Santa is not real, but there will be some presence at the end of your bed, and Jesus is more wonderful than Santa.

2462. So that was kind of, we grabbed what we could and we offered what we couldn't.

  2463. Santa's not real?

  2464. Santa's not real?

  2465. Santa's not real?

  2466. Santa's not real?

  2467. Santa's not real?

  2468. Santa's not real?

  2469. Santa's not real?

2470. Santa's not real, Santa and ma'amma's real?

  2471. Santa's not real?

2472. when we read the Bible, is we're looking at the text,

2473. we're then asking ourselves, where does this fit in the context?

2474. Ah, it's about a battle, invading a promised land.

  2475. But this is a one-off.

2476. And therefore we might ask the question,

2477. how has Jesus changed everything?

2478. Well, a much bigger victory, a much bigger battle,

  2479. a much bigger success.

2480. What's the message for today?

2481. Be thankful for what God did for his people,

  2482. keeping his promises,

2483. be especially thankful for what the Lord Jesus has done for us

2484. and take refuge in him.

2485. So we're looking carefully, reading our Bible with our brains

2486. to make sure that we have either seen something

2487. which is just for a particular period and learned from it

2488. or whether we've seen something which is forever

2489. and tried to be obedient to it.

2490. But there needs to be some sense as we read our Bible.

  2491. Next question.

2492. You emphasized Israel's response of obedience to the law

2493. as following Israel's salvation, i.e. God's grace came first.

  2494. And the question is,

2495. how do you square that with the conditional nature of the law

2496. which Paul contrasts with the gospel in Galatians 3?

2497. Doesn't Deuteronomy emphasize that for Israel,

2498. life and blessing were conditional on their obedience?

2499. I want to say again,

2500. and we'll see this in the session after lunch,

  2501. that when Moses says,

  2502. if you disobey,

2503. the curses of God will come down on you

2504. and you'll be sent out of the land

2505. and you'll be in exile,

2506. all of that took place.

  2507. My question is,

2508. when God is speaking to his people,

2509. who he knows are his forever people,

2510. we know that he's also going to cause them

  2511. to be repentant

  2512. and to be restored

  2513. and to receive mercy.

2514. And so all the time,

2515. we're dealing with this covenant faithfulness of God,

2516. not wanting to give the impression

2517. that behavior is a tightrope that you must walk,

  2518. which is really precarious,

2519. but teaching that the people of God

2520. are very much secure on the rock.

  2521. But of course,

  2522. if we drift,

2523. we may go a long way.

2524. We may go into a great deal of harm.

2525. And the Bible won't play the game of saying,

2526. doesn't matter what you do,

2527. because it's always dealing with promises

2528. and warnings at the same time.

2529. So you cannot get assurance

2530. built into a bumper sticker,

2531. because God won't say to a person,

  2532. do what you like.

  2533. He'll say,

  2534. you're my people

2535. and I'm going to give you eternal life.

2536. But if you turn away

2537. and walk a long way away,

2538. does that begin to show

2539. that you were never a person with life?

2540. Because we need the promises

2541. and we need the warnings.

2542. And if we remove the promises,

  2543. we'll be desperate.

2544. If we remove the warnings,

  2545. we'll be stupid.

2546. And so he very carefully shepherds us

2547. with the two of them.

2548. I don't know if I've explained that very well.

  2549. I think it was R.C. Sproul

  2550. who said,

2551. if you have eternal life,

2552. you never lose eternal life.

2553. If you lose eternal life,

2554. you never had eternal life.

  2555. And that's the careful,

  2556. systematic theology

  2557. of assurance, I think.

  2558. Yeah.

2559. I probably confused you there,

  2560. but I didn't mean to.

  2561. There's a number of other questions

  2562. that have come in,

  2563. but I think we'll make this

2564. the last one at 1227.

  2565. So this question is,

2566. you spoke about showing our lives

2567. as being followers of Christ

2568. in simple honesty and witness.

2569. As teachers of children and youth,

2570. how do you recommend we develop that

2571. in our children and youth?

  2572. Great question.

  2573. And without a doubt,

2574. you want your youth and children

2575. to keep hearing how wonderful Jesus is.

2576. It's a big mistake in the ministry

  2577. with youth and children,

2578. whether you're parents or teachers

2579. or youth leaders or Sunday school teachers,

2580. to keep moralising your children

2581. to the point where they just feel

2582. as though the whole thing is impossible.

2583. We want people at the end of a talk

  2584. to go away saying,

  2585. Jesus is wonderful.

2586. We want people at the end of a youth night

  2587. to go home saying,

  2588. Jesus is wonderful.

2589. We want people at the end

2590. of a Sunday school class

  2591. to go home saying,

  2592. Jesus is wonderful.

  2593. You know,

2594. if you're teaching on Jonah and the whale,

2595. you don't want to say to a little kid

  2596. at a class

2597. or as you're tucking them into bed,

  2598. Jonah ran away

2599. and a whale ate him.

2600. If you ever run away,

2601. I will pray for a whale to eat you.

  2602. Now sleep well

2603. and I'll see you in the morning.

2604. You don't want to do that.

2605. You want to say something like this,

  2606. how wonderful is God?

2607. He cared about those people

  2608. nobody cared about.

2609. He even changed his servant

  2610. who didn't care either

  2611. and he made sure

2612. that they were all hearing the good news

2613. and we have somebody like that

  2614. called Jesus

2615. and he cares about us

2616. and he's made it possible

2617. for us to be safe.

2618. That's what you want to say.

  2619. David and Goliath.

  2620. David was very brave.

  2621. He got a rock

  2622. and killed a giant.

2623. When you get to school tomorrow

2624. and you see that bully,

  2625. find a sling,

  2626. get a rock,

  2627. be a brave boy.

  2628. Now sleep well

2629. and I'll see you in the morning.

  2630. No.

  2631. No.

  2632. How great is God

  2633. raises up somebody

2634. so the enemy is defeated

  2635. and all God's people

  2636. are safe.

  2637. How blessed are we?

  2638. God raises up somebody,

  2639. Jesus,

  2640. who wins a victory

2641. and we belong to him.

2642. That's what we need to be doing.

2643. That's how we need to be helping

  2644. children, youth and adults

  2645. to be thankful

2646. and thankfulness will be a huge part

  2647. of staying close.

  2648. Okay?

  2649. I'm very tempted

  2650. to do one more.

  2651. Are David's sandals

  2652. vintage Israelite

  2653. the magic kind

2654. that I've never worn out?

  2655. Thank you for that.

2656. So I'm going to hand it back

  2657. to Andrew

2658. but can I just say

  2659. one comment

  2660. on all these questions?

2661. When we come to camps

  2662. and things like this,

  2663. our minds just fill

  2664. with questions.

2665. We spend a bit of time

  2666. studying the scripture

  2667. and there's just

  2668. questions arise

2669. and those are good things

2670. but here's the problem for us.

2671. We go away from camp

2672. and then we just fall

  2673. into slumber again.

  2674. We need to,

  2675. the scriptures are

2676. just rich treasures for us.

2677. God speaks with a clear

  2678. single message.

  2679. He doesn't speak

  2680. with a forked tongue.

2681. His idea is not to confuse us.

2682. We have the resources we need.

  2683. We've got brains,

  2684. we've got the spirit

  2685. working within us,

  2686. we've got the word,

  2687. we've got cross-reference,

2688. we've got hundreds of years

  2689. worth of scholarly literature

  2690. that's been accumulated

2691. for us by God's grace

  2692. and we can answer

2693. a lot of our own questions

  2694. with some serious-minded

  2695. study of scripture.

2696. So can I encourage you

2697. to pursue your own questions,

  2698. pursue them deeply

  2699. in the word,

  2700. ask somebody

  2701. if you get stuck,

  2702. cross-reference,

  2703. but for goodness sake,

  2704. let's take some responsibility

  2705. and learn, study,

  2706. dive into God's word

2707. and we will find riches

  2708. and maturity

  2709. waiting for us

  2710. in doing that.

  2711. So, Ryland,

  2712. while it's good

  2713. to have a speaker

  2714. to answer our questions,

  2715. it's not necessary.

  2716. He's not a cultic figure.

  2717. I don't mean that

  2718. with any disrespect.

2719. We don't have cultic figures.

  2720. We have the word

  2721. that's immediate

  2722. and will give life

  2723. and vitality to us

2724. if we will dig into it

  2725. and live in it.

  2726. Andrew.

  2727. Andrew.

  2728. Andrew.

  2729. Andrew.

  2730. Andrew.

  2731. Andrew.

  2732. Andrew.

  2733. Andrew.

  2734. Andrew.

  2735. Andrew.

  2736. Andrew.

  2737. Andrew.

  2738. Andrew.

  2739. Andrew.

  2740. Andrew.

  2741. Andrew.

  2742. Andrew.

  2743. Andrew.

  2744. Andrew.

  2745. Andrew.

  2746. Andrew.
