  1. We're going to have our Bible reading now,

  2. so if you want to open your devices, your Bibles,

  3. whatever you've brought with you,

  4. we're going to look at Romans 6, starting at verse 15.

  5. Romans 6, verse 15.

    Romans 6:15

  6. What then?

  7. Are we to sin because we are not under the law,

  8. but under grace?

  9. By no means.

  10. Do not know that if you present yourselves to anyone

  11. as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey.

  12. Either of sin, which leads to death,

  13. or of obedience, which leads to righteousness.

  14. But thanks be to God that you, who were once slaves of sin,

  15. have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching

  16. to which you were committed.

  17. And, having been set free from sin,

  18. have become slaves of righteousness.

  19. I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations.

  20. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity

  21. and to lawlessness, leading to more lawlessness,

  22. so now present your members as slaves to righteousness,

  23. leading to sanctification.

  24. For when you were slaves of sin,

  25. you were free in regard to righteousness.

  26. But what fruit were you getting at that time,

  27. from the things of which you were now ashamed?

  28. For the end of those things is death.

  29. But now that you have been set free from sin

  30. and have become slaves of God,

  31. the fruit you get leads to sanctification

  32. and its end, eternal life.

  33. For the wages of sin is death,

  34. but the free gift of God is eternal life

  35. in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  36. Amen.

  37. Would you please pray with me briefly

  38. as we get into God's Word?

  39. Our Father, what we hear in this passage from you

  40. is difficult to accept at first,

  41. and so I pray that you might press it in to each of our hearts.

  42. Lord, you want us to know the freedom of belonging to your Son.

  43. So please help us understand

  44. and help us to believe what you're saying here.

  45. For our joy, for your glory.

  46. I pray this in Jesus' name.

  47. Amen.

  48. Well, as we begin,

  49. you think I'm going to do something,

  50. I want you to do something.

  51. Unless people's lives depend on it

  52. or your job depends on it,

  53. I wonder if you would get out your phone

  54. and put it on aeroplane mode

  55. or turn it off completely.

  56. Go on.

  57. Go on.

  58. Ian, I just got a power trip listening to Ian,

  59. so I thought,

  60. Dave says,

  61. put your phone on aeroplane mode

  62. or totally off.

  63. How many phones can I see?

  64. Now let me give you a reason.

  65. The reason is to give you full attention

  66. to God's Word and being present

  67. with God's people.

  68. I don't want you to turn it back on

  69. until you get into your car.

  70. Okay.

  71. Honesty time.

  72. Hands up.

  73. Who just pretended

  74. to put it on aeroplane mode?

  75. Okay.

  76. Thank you, Natalie.

  77. Thanks for the honesty.

  78. Who's already wondering

  79. what notifications they're missing out on?

  80. Yeah.

  81. Yeah.

  82. Good honesty.

  83. Thank you.

  84. Now, I don't want to make a rule about this.

  85. That's not my purpose.

  86. I want to illustrate a point about freedom.

  87. Freedom is often thought about,

  88. spoken about,

  89. as if it's having no constraints on you.

  90. And I just put a constraint on you.

  91. I tried to, anyway.

  92. Freedom to have no constraints,

  93. it's not possible.

  94. So, when it comes to your phone,

  95. I should probably do it, actually.

  96. I haven't done that.

  97. No.

  98. There we go.

  99. You can be free from receiving notifications

  100. that steal your attention

  101. so that you can be free for

  102. giving your whole attention to being here,

  103. being with God's people,

  104. God's word.

  105. Or, you can be free from

  106. having all your attention grabbed

  107. by being here

  108. so that you can be free for

  109. still engaging online

  110. to some extent

  111. with a notification.

  112. It's one or the other.

  113. You can't,

  114. it's just not possible

  115. to do both.

  116. So, we often talk about freedom,

  117. freedom from,

  118. but we don't talk enough

  119. about freedom for.

  120. Let me put to you

  121. a Tim Keller illustration

  122. in my own words

  123. and maybe the point

  124. will sink in a bit better.

  125. Say there's a man in his 60s

  126. and he has two competing desires.

  127. He really desires eating

  128. all the junk food he wants

  129. and he really desires,

  130. he loves spending time

  131. with his grandkids.

  132. Now, he's got both desires

  133. but he can't do both.

  134. He can be free

  135. to eat all the junk food he wants

  136. but the wages of that

  137. is probably going to be

  138. a shorter life expectancy

  139. and so he's going to miss out

  140. on more time with his grandkids.

  141. Or, he could be constrained by,

  142. he wants more time

  143. with his grandkids

  144. and so he will be constrained

  145. in terms of what he eats.

  146. Freedom from, freedom for.

  147. You can't have it both ways.

  148. It's not how freedom works.

  149. Or, picture driving on the road.

  150. We could be free.

  151. We could just abandon all the rules

  152. and I can just drive

  153. wherever I want on the lane.

  154. I can go as fast as I want.

  155. I can drive in whatever I want.

  156. One of those Pee Wee 50 motorbike,

  157. whatever.

  158. Do whatever you want.

  159. Turn whenever you want.

  160. Don't worry about blinking,

  161. exiting the roundabout.

  162. Gee, it's so hard to remember

  163. that.

  164. Anyway, we could be free from that

  165. if we want.

  166. Or, we can be enslaved

  167. to the road rules

  168. for the freedom

  169. for all of us

  170. arriving home safely.

  171. We've got a choice.

  172. You can't have both.

  173. Either I can be free

  174. from giving my possessions away

  175. for the good of others

  176. for having an abundance

  177. of possessions for myself.

  178. Or, I can be free

  179. of believing that life

  180. consists in the abundance

  181. of my possessions

  182. so that I'm free

  183. for sharing my possessions

  184. with others.

  185. You can't have both.

  186. Jesus said that one

  187. clearly, didn't he?

  188. You can't serve God and money.

  189. You can't.

  190. You can be free

  191. from RSVPing

  192. to an event

  193. so that you can be free

  194. for having to see

  195. if something better

  196. comes along.

  197. Or, you could be,

  198. you could give an RSVP

  199. ahead of time

  200. so that you can be free

  201. for being a person

  202. known

  203. who keeps their commitments

  204. and who actually

  205. respects you enough

  206. to reply.

  207. You can't do both.

  208. Now, hopefully,

  209. some of those illustrations,

  210. I don't know

  211. if it's sinking in or not,

  212. but freedom is not just

  213. about what you're free from.

  214. Freedom is about

  215. what you're free for.

  216. Freedom is not about

  217. being free

  218. from all constraints.

  219. That does not exist.

  220. The world talks about that.

  221. We wrestled with that

  222. with the pandemic rules,

  223. didn't we?

  224. Freedom from constraints.

  225. That idea

  226. doesn't exist.

  227. That's not freedom.

  228. True freedom

  229. is giving ourselves

  230. to good constraints.

  231. Life-giving constraints.

  232. That's where you find freedom.

  233. Freedom from,

  234. freedom for.

  235. Now, I'm labouring this point

  236. because I think this is

  237. really crucial to get

  238. in our minds

  239. as we come to this passage

  240. about being set free

  241. from sin

  242. to be slaves

  243. to righteousness.

  244. Otherwise,

  245. we're going to hear

  246. that idea

  247. of being slaves

  248. to righteousness

  249. as burdensome,

  250. as oppressing

  251. our freedom,

  252. when it's actually

  253. saying,

  254. here's where

  255. you'll find freedom.

  256. So my experience

  257. is that

  258. unbelievers

  259. often see

  260. Christianity

  261. as the choice

  262. between giving up

  263. your freedom

  264. to be constrained

  265. by religious rules.

  266. That's not the choice.

  267. Here's how someone,

  268. Douglas Moo,

  269. a commentator,

  270. put it.

  271. The choice

  272. with which people

  273. are faced

  274. is not

  275. should I retain

  276. my freedom

  277. or give it up

  278. and submit to God.

  279. The choice is

  280. should I serve sin

  281. or should I serve God?

  282. That's the choice.

  283. Sin or God?

  284. Lie or truth?

  285. So true freedom

  286. isn't from all constraints.

  287. That doesn't exist.

  288. True freedom

  289. is being constrained

  290. by what gives you life.

  291. Okay,

  292. so how does this relate

  293. to the gospel

  294. and living out

  295. the gospel life?

  296. when we grasp

  297. the gospel

  298. that we are saved

  299. by grace alone,

  300. by faith alone,

  301. simply by faith alone

  302. in what Jesus

  303. has already done,

  304. I'm justified,

  305. just as if

  306. I've never sinned.

  307. I'm saved

  308. from the penalty

  309. of death

  310. that my sin deserves.

  311. There is now

  312. no condemnation.

  313. I am at peace

  314. with God.

  315. That's what we've

  316. covered in Romans.

  317. If you grasp

  318. this gospel,

  319. then the question

  320. Paul asks

  321. is the obvious

  322. question,

  323. isn't it?

  324. Chapter 6,

  325. verse 15.

  326. If I'm definitely

  327. saved by grace,

  328. if the law's

  329. threat of punishment

  330. for breaking the law,

  331. that's gone.

  332. If the law's

  333. promise of reward,

  334. of blessing,

  335. is guaranteed,

  336. what motivation

  337. do I have

  338. to not sin?

  339. What motivation

  340. is there?

  341. The assumption

  342. here is

  343. that it's

  344. God's law

  345. that keeps us

  346. doing the right

  347. thing and keeps us

  348. from doing evil.

  349. Now, the law

  350. can tell us

  351. what is good

  352. and evil,

  353. but the assumption

  354. here is that

  355. it's the law

  356. that has the power

  357. to make us

  358. do the right

  359. thing and not

  360. do the wrong

  361. thing.

  362. This is the

  363. common objection

  364. to Christianity,

  365. especially among

  366. Muslims today.

  367. saved by grace,

  368. you'll just do

  369. whatever you want,

  370. you'll just sin.

  371. That can't be right.

  372. What other

  373. motivation could

  374. there be

  375. to doing the

  376. right thing

  377. and not doing

  378. the wrong thing?

  379. So instead of

  380. just talking

  381. in the abstract,

  382. I want to frame

  383. the rest of this

  384. sermon in terms

  385. of your

  386. fight with sin,

  387. your individual

  388. motivation

  389. to do what

  390. God says.

  391. So I'm going

  392. to frame

  393. the rest of it.

  394. You're facing

  395. the choice

  396. of whether to

  397. sin or not.

  398. What motivation

  399. is there,

  400. if not law?

  401. What does

  402. grace motivate

  403. us to do?

  404. So hopefully

  405. you've got your

  406. Bibles open

  407. to Romans 6.

  408. Make sure

  409. what I'm saying

  410. is true.

  411. Notice first

  412. what Paul

  413. doesn't say.

  414. he doesn't

  415. say sin

  416. doesn't matter.

  417. Go on

  418. sinning,

  419. yeah.

  420. As if we

  421. expected him

  422. to say that.

  423. I don't think

  424. anyone expected

  425. that to be

  426. the answer.

  427. He also

  428. doesn't say,

  429. well,

  430. if a person

  431. goes on

  432. totally living

  433. in sin,

  434. then that

  435. would show

  436. that they

  437. were never

  438. a Christian

  439. in the first

  440. place.

  441. He doesn't

  442. say that.

  443. Now,

  444. that might

  445. be true

  446. in an

  447. ultimate

  448. sense.

  449. If someone

  450. just lives

  451. their life

  452. not caring

  453. about Jesus

  454. at all

  455. for all

  456. their life,

  457. then yeah,

  458. that statement

  459. is true.

  460. But if that

  461. person is here

  462. today,

  463. they've stopped

  464. listening to me

  465. a while ago.

  466. They don't care

  467. about the answer

  468. to this question.

  469. So if you're

  470. still listening,

  471. that's great

  472. news.

  473. Or if you're

  474. still searching

  475. the passage,

  476. that's great

  477. news.

  478. But do you

  479. see what's

  480. dangerous about

  481. thinking,

  482. I've got to

  483. do the right

  484. thing to

  485. prove that

  486. I'm still

  487. under grace?

  488. Do you

  489. hear what's

  490. wrong with

  491. that?

  492. It's really

  493. going,

  494. I'm saved

  495. by Jesus,

  496. but I need

  497. a little bit

  498. of law.

  499. I'm saved

  500. by grace,

  501. but to make

  502. sure I'm

  503. saved by

  504. grace,

  505. I need a

  506. little bit

  507. of law

  508. in my

  509. life to

  510. try and do

  511. the right

  512. thing.

  513. That's not

  514. the gospel.

  515. The gospel

  516. is you

  517. only need

  518. Jesus.

  519. Jesus is

  520. totally

  521. sufficient.

  522. It's

  523. fighting sin,

  524. that kind

  525. of thinking

  526. is fighting

  527. sin with a

  528. little bit

  529. of fear.

  530. If I just

  531. do whatever

  532. I want,

  533. maybe that

  534. will show

  535. I'm not a

  536. Christian and

  537. therefore I'm

  538. facing God's

  539. judgment.

  540. Notice that

  541. it's actually

  542. using fear

  543. to motivate

  544. us to do

  545. the right

  546. thing.

  547. that's

  548. not the

  549. gospel.

  550. We have

  551. motivation

  552. of love,

  553. not fear.

  554. We're going

  555. to see that

  556. in this

  557. passage.

  558. So how

  559. does grace

  560. motivate me

  561. to fight

  562. sin's desire?

  563. First,

  564. Paul gives

  565. an instinctive

  566. emotional response,

  567. by no means.

  568. May it

  569. never be.

  570. He could

  571. not say

  572. this more

  573. quickly and

  574. strongly.

  575. Should we

  576. keep on

  577. sinning?

  578. No.

  579. He just

  580. couldn't

  581. help

  582. himself.

  583. It just

  584. comes out

  585. of him.

  586. I think

  587. this little

  588. outburst

  589. says more

  590. than simply

  591. no.

  592. None of

  593. us expect

  594. him to

  595. say yes.

  596. I think

  597. it shows

  598. it's his

  599. instinctive

  600. response.

  601. It's his

  602. gut response.

  603. If I

  604. ask you a

  605. different

  606. question,

  607. because husbands

  608. and wives

  609. have given

  610. promises to

  611. remain together

  612. for the

  613. entire life,

  614. does that

  615. mean that they

  616. can treat

  617. each other

  618. however poorly

  619. they want?

  620. I saw some

  621. shakes of the

  622. head.

  623. Did you have

  624. to logically

  625. think that

  626. through to

  627. come up with

  628. an answer?

  629. Didn't your

  630. instinctive

  631. response go,

  632. no way,

  633. that's not

  634. right?

  635. And then you

  636. work out,

  637. why was that

  638. my instinctive

  639. response?

  640. Something deep

  641. inside our

  642. worldview of

  643. relationships

  644. told us

  645. straight away,

  646. no,

  647. that's not

  648. right.

  649. That's what's

  650. happening here

  651. with Paul.

  652. Shall we

  653. keep on

  654. sinning?

  655. No.

  656. The point

  657. I'm getting

  658. at is that

  659. prior to

  660. Paul's

  661. conversion,

  662. he would

  663. have been

  664. the one

  665. asking this

  666. question,

  667. going,

  668. the gospel

  669. can't be

  670. right,

  671. I'm a

  672. Pharisee.

  673. He would

  674. be the one

  675. posing this

  676. question,

  677. but now

  678. Paul is the

  679. one going,

  680. no way.

  681. Yes,

  682. it's all by

  683. grace.

  684. No,

  685. something

  686. fundamental

  687. has changed

  688. inside Paul.

  689. this outburst,

  690. I think,

  691. comes from

  692. Paul's grasp

  693. of who he

  694. now is

  695. in Christ.

  696. That's the

  697. purpose of

  698. this section.

  699. Chapters 5

  700. to 8

  701. is all about

  702. training us to

  703. think of

  704. ourselves as

  705. in Jesus

  706. Christ,

  707. our Lord.

  708. God.

  709. So,

  710. would you,

  711. I want to

  712. spend a little

  713. bit of time

  714. pressing in

  715. this point

  716. because

  717. someone helped

  718. me to see it

  719. this week

  720. and I haven't

  721. seen it

  722. before and

  723. I just want

  724. to show you.

  725. So,

  726. turn to

  727. chapter 5

  728. verse 1.

  729. Chapter 5

  730. verse 1.

  731. What is this

  732. section of

  733. Romans about?

  734. Chapter 5

  735. verse 1.

  736. See if you

  737. can pick up

  738. a key phrase

  739. that keeps

  740. repeating.

  741. We're going

  742. to look at

  743. a few

  744. different

  745. verses.

  746. Therefore,

  747. since we've

  748. been justified

  749. by faith,

  750. we have

  751. peace with

  752. God through

  753. our Lord

  754. Jesus Christ.

  755. Now,

  756. look,

  757. jump to

  758. 5 verse 11.

  759. I'm not

  760. going to give

  761. context,

  762. we're just

  763. going to

  764. jump.

  765. More than

  766. that,

  767. we also

  768. rejoice in

  769. God through

  770. our Lord

  771. Jesus Christ

  772. through whom

  773. we have now

  774. received

  775. reconciliation.

  776. Then jump

  777. to chapter

  778. 5 verse

  779. 21.

  780. So that,

  781. as sin

  782. reigned in

  783. death,

  784. grace also

  785. might reign

  786. through

  787. righteousness

  788. leading to

  789. eternal life

  790. through Jesus

  791. Christ our

  792. Lord.

  793. Have you

  794. got the

  795. phrase yet?

  796. It keeps

  797. repeating.

  798. Look at

  799. 6 verse 11.

  800. This is the

  801. first command

  802. in Romans.

  803. Do you know

  804. what you should

  805. do in response

  806. to the

  807. gospel?

  808. Here's the

  809. first command

  810. that you

  811. should respond.

  812. This is how

  813. you should

  814. respond.

  815. 6 verse 11.

  816. So you

  817. also must

  818. consider

  819. yourselves

  820. dead to

  821. sin and

  822. alive to

  823. God in

  824. Christ Jesus.

  825. The first

  826. thing we're

  827. told to do

  828. is to

  829. consider

  830. ourselves

  831. something.

  832. Okay,

  833. we're not

  834. done yet.

  835. 6 verse 23,

  836. which we've

  837. heard this

  838. morning.

  839. For the

  840. wages of

  841. sin is

  842. death,

  843. but the

  844. free gift

  845. of God

  846. is eternal

  847. life in

  848. Christ Jesus

  849. our Lord.

  850. God.

  851. Then

  852. jump to

  853. 7.

  854. 25.

  855. Thanks be

  856. to God.

  857. Who's going

  858. to save

  859. me from

  860. this body

  861. of death?

  862. Thanks be

  863. to God

  864. that keeps

  865. sinning.

  866. Through

  867. Jesus

  868. Christ

  869. our

  870. Lord.

  871. I won't

  872. read the

  873. rest of

  874. the verse,

  875. but thanks

  876. be to God

  877. through

  878. Jesus

  879. Christ

  880. our

  881. Lord.

  882. Last

  883. one,

  884. 8.

  885. 39.

  886. 9.

  887. Nothing,

  888. nor height,

  889. nor depth,

  890. nor anything

  891. else in

  892. all creation

  893. will be

  894. able to

  895. separate us

  896. from the

  897. love of

  898. God in

  899. Christ

  900. Jesus

  901. our Lord.

  902. Did you

  903. pick up the

  904. key phrase

  905. that unites

  906. this whole

  907. section?

  908. In and

  909. through

  910. Jesus

  911. Christ

  912. our

  913. Lord.

  914. It's

  915. training us

  916. to think

  917. of ourselves

  918. as in

  919. Jesus

  920. Christ

  921. our

  922. Lord.

  923. We

  924. see

  925. ourselves

  926. as in

  927. him.

  928. So how

  929. does being

  930. united to

  931. Jesus

  932. motivate us

  933. not to

  934. sin?

  935. I think

  936. Paul gives

  937. us four

  938. ways of

  939. thinking

  940. now that

  941. we're in

  942. Christ.

  943. There's

  944. more than

  945. this.

  946. We need

  947. chapter 7

  948. and chapter

  949. 8.

  950. The fact

  951. that we

  952. keep on

  953. sinning,

  954. we need

  955. chapter 7

  956. to go,

  957. that is

  958. the normal

  959. Christian

  960. experience.

  961. Sin is

  962. still present.

  963. Who's

  964. going to

  965. save us

  966. from this

  967. body that

  968. just keeps

  969. on doing

  970. what I

  971. don't want

  972. to do?

  973. So we

  974. need to

  975. hear more

  976. than this

  977. as I'm

  978. saying.

  979. Wait for

  980. chapter 7

  981. and 8.

  982. There's

  983. more to

  984. the story

  985. but this

  986. morning we

  987. get four

  988. motivations,

  989. four weapons

  990. to fight

  991. sin with,

  992. with grace.

  993. The first

  994. one is to

  995. see sin

  996. as it

  997. really is,

  998. an

  999. enslaving

  1000. lie.

  1001. The second

  1002. motivation is

  1003. understand what

  1004. Christ achieved

  1005. for you

  1006. when he died

  1007. and rose

  1008. again.

  1009. He didn't

  1010. just pay the

  1011. penalty of

  1012. sin,

  1013. he liberated

  1014. you from

  1015. sin's dominion

  1016. over you.

  1017. You have a

  1018. new master.

  1019. The second

  1020. weapon is

  1021. compare these

  1022. two masters

  1023. and what they

  1024. offer you

  1025. and you

  1026. will find

  1027. that you

  1028. never have

  1029. to choose

  1030. between

  1031. doing what

  1032. God wants

  1033. and what

  1034. gives you

  1035. life.

  1036. You never

  1037. have to

  1038. choose between

  1039. the two.

  1040. And I

  1041. think the

  1042. fourth

  1043. motivation

  1044. we get

  1045. in this

  1046. passage is

  1047. this

  1048. slavery

  1049. metaphor

  1050. analogy,

  1051. it's not

  1052. the full

  1053. picture.

  1054. We're only

  1055. slaves in

  1056. as much

  1057. as Jesus

  1058. Christ is,

  1059. a slave

  1060. of God.

  1061. So let's

  1062. go through

  1063. each of

  1064. these.

  1065. So first,

  1066. we need

  1067. to see

  1068. sin as

  1069. it actually

  1070. is.

  1071. It's an

  1072. enslaving

  1073. lie.

  1074. So verse

  1075. 16.

  1076. verse 16.

  1077. Do you

  1078. not know

  1079. that if

  1080. you present

  1081. yourselves to

  1082. anyone as

  1083. obedient slaves,

  1084. you are slaves

  1085. of the one

  1086. whom you

  1087. obey,

  1088. either of

  1089. sin,

  1090. which leads

  1091. to death,

  1092. or of

  1093. obedience,

  1094. which leads

  1095. to righteousness.

  1096. I think we

  1097. can think of

  1098. sin like the

  1099. occasional bad

  1100. decision that

  1101. we commit,

  1102. like eating

  1103. that 11th

  1104. piece of

  1105. chocolate,

  1106. or 32nd

  1107. piece of

  1108. chocolate.

  1109. We know

  1110. we shouldn't

  1111. do it,

  1112. but we

  1113. commit it,

  1114. the

  1115. transgression.

  1116. I'm not

  1117. saying chocolate's

  1118. evil,

  1119. but Paul is

  1120. saying sin

  1121. here is not

  1122. the occasional

  1123. transgression,

  1124. but really we're

  1125. still in control.

  1126. We don't have

  1127. to have the

  1128. 33rd piece

  1129. of chocolate.

  1130. That's not

  1131. how he views

  1132. sin.

  1133. He sees

  1134. sin more

  1135. like alcohol,

  1136. an alcoholic.

  1137. It's not

  1138. just the

  1139. occasional

  1140. mistake.

  1141. It's

  1142. actually

  1143. controlling

  1144. the person.

  1145. It is

  1146. affecting

  1147. every area

  1148. of their

  1149. life.

  1150. It is

  1151. damaging

  1152. everything.

  1153. They don't

  1154. have self-control.

  1155. They are

  1156. under the

  1157. control of

  1158. the alcohol.

  1159. It affects

  1160. everything.

  1161. That's how

  1162. he's

  1163. viewing

  1164. sin.

  1165. Sin is

  1166. enslaving.

  1167. sin.

  1168. I just

  1169. want to

  1170. pause at

  1171. this point

  1172. and qualify

  1173. something we've

  1174. been saying

  1175. in this

  1176. Roman series

  1177. so far.

  1178. Dave and I

  1179. have been

  1180. saying that

  1181. sin is

  1182. claiming

  1183. autonomy.

  1184. Claiming

  1185. autonomy away

  1186. from God.

  1187. God, you're

  1188. not ruling

  1189. my life.

  1190. I'm ruling

  1191. my life.

  1192. Rejecting

  1193. his rightful

  1194. rule over

  1195. us.

  1196. While that's

  1197. still an

  1198. accurate description

  1199. of sin,

  1200. do you see

  1201. that it's

  1202. not quite

  1203. the full

  1204. picture?

  1205. There's

  1206. something wrong

  1207. with that

  1208. definition or

  1209. something not

  1210. quite complete.

  1211. The idea

  1212. that we can

  1213. have autonomy

  1214. is a lie.

  1215. It's a

  1216. lie.

  1217. God is

  1218. God.

  1219. You can

  1220. try and have

  1221. autonomy,

  1222. it just

  1223. doesn't exist.

  1224. God is

  1225. still

  1226. God.

  1227. What's

  1228. actually

  1229. going on

  1230. when you

  1231. try and

  1232. rule your

  1233. own life

  1234. is you're

  1235. giving

  1236. yourself

  1237. to

  1238. enslavement

  1239. to a

  1240. lie.

  1241. You're

  1242. not

  1243. living

  1244. according

  1245. to the

  1246. truth.

  1247. It's

  1248. the

  1249. fundamental

  1250. lie

  1251. that Adam

  1252. and Eve

  1253. believed.

  1254. You can

  1255. be like

  1256. God.

  1257. No,

  1258. you

  1259. can't.

  1260. The

  1261. sadly

  1262. ironic

  1263. thing is

  1264. by claiming

  1265. self-rule

  1266. we're

  1267. selling

  1268. ourselves

  1269. to be

  1270. slaves

  1271. to sin,

  1272. to a

  1273. lie,

  1274. 24-7.

  1275. Whatever

  1276. we obey,

  1277. we are

  1278. slaves of

  1279. the thing

  1280. we obey.

  1281. We can

  1282. either serve

  1283. sin or

  1284. God.

  1285. So,

  1286. first,

  1287. we fight

  1288. sin by

  1289. seeing it

  1290. for what

  1291. it is.

  1292. It's not

  1293. the occasional

  1294. transgression.

  1295. It's an

  1296. enslaving

  1297. lie.

  1298. God

  1299. to

  1300. die.

  1301. The

  1302. second

  1303. thing,

  1304. and this

  1305. is the

  1306. main

  1307. motivation

  1308. in this

  1309. passage,

  1310. understand

  1311. what

  1312. Christ's

  1313. death

  1314. and

  1315. resurrection

  1316. accomplished

  1317. for you.

  1318. Jesus

  1319. didn't

  1320. just die

  1321. and rise

  1322. again

  1323. so that

  1324. you

  1325. escaped

  1326. the

  1327. penalty

  1328. of

  1329. sin,

  1330. although

  1331. that is

  1332. wonderfully

  1333. true.

  1334. Christ's

  1335. mission

  1336. was like

  1337. a prison

  1338. break.

  1339. He

  1340. came

  1341. into the

  1342. prison

  1343. to break

  1344. us

  1345. out,

  1346. or it's

  1347. like a

  1348. military

  1349. operation

  1350. to come

  1351. in and

  1352. get the

  1353. prisoners

  1354. of war

  1355. out.

  1356. It's

  1357. like a

  1358. police

  1359. raid on

  1360. a house

  1361. with women

  1362. trapped

  1363. in human

  1364. trafficking.

  1365. It's

  1366. being

  1367. oppressed

  1368. and enslaved,

  1369. not in

  1370. control.

  1371. It's a

  1372. rescue

  1373. mission.

  1374. We

  1375. weren't

  1376. just saved

  1377. from the

  1378. penalty,

  1379. we're

  1380. saved

  1381. from the

  1382. power

  1383. of sin

  1384. over us.

  1385. In

  1386. Christ,

  1387. I have

  1388. been

  1389. liberated,

  1390. I have

  1391. a new

  1392. master.

  1393. That's

  1394. what

  1395. verse 17

  1396. and 18

  1397. is saying,

  1398. but thanks

  1399. be to

  1400. God

  1401. that you

  1402. who were

  1403. once

  1404. slaves

  1405. of sin

  1406. have

  1407. become

  1408. obedient

  1409. from the

  1410. heart

  1411. to the

  1412. standard

  1413. of teaching

  1414. to which

  1415. you were

  1416. committed,

  1417. and having

  1418. been set

  1419. free

  1420. from sin,

  1421. have

  1422. become

  1423. slaves

  1424. of

  1425. righteousness.

  1426. Let me

  1427. try and

  1428. use a few

  1429. illustrations

  1430. here.

  1431. Imagine you

  1432. get a new

  1433. job,

  1434. and at

  1435. 9.15am

  1436. you get a

  1437. call from

  1438. and it

  1439. happens to

  1440. be your

  1441. previous

  1442. boss,

  1443. and there's

  1444. a sharp

  1445. voice on

  1446. the other

  1447. end of

  1448. the line,

  1449. where are

  1450. you?

  1451. The meeting

  1452. started at

  1453. 9.

  1454. What would

  1455. you be

  1456. thinking in

  1457. that moment?

  1458. You're not

  1459. my boss

  1460. anymore,

  1461. I'm not

  1462. coming to

  1463. that meeting.

  1464. What?

  1465. What do you

  1466. mean you're not

  1467. coming to

  1468. that meeting?

  1469. I've got a

  1470. new job,

  1471. that's who

  1472. I am,

  1473. you have no

  1474. authority over

  1475. me, I am

  1476. not turning

  1477. up, end

  1478. call.

  1479. Isn't that

  1480. how you'd be

  1481. thinking about

  1482. yourself?

  1483. You might be

  1484. more polite

  1485. than that, I

  1486. don't know,

  1487. but you have

  1488. no authority

  1489. over me.

  1490. Or to use

  1491. the illustration

  1492. by, it's on

  1493. the back of

  1494. your bulletin,

  1495. Dr. Sinclair

  1496. Ferguson, he's

  1497. a Scottish

  1498. preacher and

  1499. writer.

  1500. So say I

  1501. became an

  1502. American citizen,

  1503. I'm speaking

  1504. as Sinclair

  1505. Ferguson now,

  1506. then out of

  1507. the blue I

  1508. have a letter

  1509. from Buckingham

  1510. Palace signed

  1511. by Elizabeth

  1512. II, or

  1513. Elizabeth R as

  1514. I believe she

  1515. signs herself,

  1516. Dear Dr.

  1517. Ferguson, I

  1518. command you to

  1519. come back and

  1520. serve in the

  1521. forces here in

  1522. the United

  1523. Kingdom.

  1524. But I've

  1525. become an

  1526. American citizen.

  1527. I can send my

  1528. little letter back

  1529. to her, and

  1530. especially if I'm

  1531. no longer a

  1532. monarchist, I'm

  1533. not sure what

  1534. we'll do here in

  1535. Australia, but

  1536. Dear Lizzie,

  1537. isn't that good?

  1538. It was so nice

  1539. having you as my

  1540. sovereign, and I

  1541. actually loved

  1542. living under your

  1543. reign, but I am

  1544. no longer under

  1545. your reign.

  1546. I am an

  1547. American.

  1548. I am no longer

  1549. under your

  1550. dominion.

  1551. You have no

  1552. authority over

  1553. me.

  1554. Now, we

  1555. might be

  1556. thinking, doesn't

  1557. the fact that I

  1558. still sin often

  1559. suggest that I'm

  1560. still under the

  1561. reign of sin?

  1562. Are we just

  1563. meant to pretend

  1564. and imagine like

  1565. sin has no power

  1566. over us when,

  1567. let's be honest,

  1568. it is a strong

  1569. force constant in

  1570. our life, isn't

  1571. it?

  1572. Are we just

  1573. pretending here?

  1574. We're not

  1575. pretending, because

  1576. the grounds of this

  1577. reality is not in

  1578. your behaviour.

  1579. It's not in your

  1580. present daily

  1581. behaviour.

  1582. That says nothing

  1583. about whether you're

  1584. slaves or not.

  1585. We'll come to that

  1586. in chapter 7.

  1587. The grounds of

  1588. being set free is

  1589. what Jesus has

  1590. already done.

  1591. He died to sin,

  1592. in him we have

  1593. died.

  1594. He's raised to

  1595. live for God, in

  1596. him we have new

  1597. master.

  1598. The ground isn't in

  1599. our experience, the

  1600. ground is what Jesus

  1601. has done for us.

  1602. This is trying to

  1603. teach us, train

  1604. yourself to think

  1605. like this.

  1606. I am free from

  1607. sin, even though I

1608. sin so much, and I

  1609. don't want to, but I

  1610. keep doing it.

  1611. I am free, because

  1612. of what Christ has

  1613. done.

  1614. Notice the passive

  1615. voice in these few

  1616. verses.

  1617. It's not that you

  1618. committed yourself to

  1619. this new master, it's

  1620. that you were handed

  1621. over.

  1622. This was something

  1623. that was done to

  1624. you.

1625. So it's not that the

  1626. standard of teaching

  1627. was committed to

  1628. you, it was you

  1629. were committed to

  1630. the standard of

  1631. teaching.

  1632. So you were

  1633. committed into this

  1634. new life in

  1635. Christ.

  1636. It's a passive

  1637. voice.

  1638. You didn't do it,

  1639. and that's why Paul

  1640. gives God the

  1641. credit.

  1642. Thanks be to

  1643. God.

  1644. He transferred you,

  1645. he liberated you.

  1646. When did it happen?

  1647. When you first believed

  1648. into Christ.

  1649. Now that's a, it's a

  1650. strange way of

  1651. describing becoming a

  1652. Christian.

  1653. So you have become

  1654. obedient from the

  1655. heart to the standard

  1656. of teaching.

  1657. It's a bit of a

  1658. strange way of

  1659. describing becoming a

  1660. Christian, but I like

  1661. how FF Bruce, another

  1662. commentator, puts it, so

1663. let me share it with you.

1664. What is this pattern of

  1665. teaching?

  1666. It's the pattern of

  1667. teaching which was

  1668. embodied in Christ

  1669. himself.

1670. So it wasn't this list

  1671. of rules.

  1672. What were we committed

  1673. to?

  1674. Christ himself.

  1675. What he embodied,

1676. this new way of life.

  1677. So when we first

  1678. believed we have been

  1679. brought into this new

  1680. way of life, we've

  1681. been brought into

  1682. Christ.

  1683. And being in Christ,

1684. he is both saviour and

  1685. Lord.

  1686. Alright, if you, I'm

1687. not sure if I've said

  1688. that clearly enough, but

1689. feel free to come talk

1690. to me afterwards if you're

1691. a bit confused still on

  1692. that point.

1693. We'll talk to each other.

  1694. Maybe even better.

  1695. Okay, first one.

1696. See sin as an enslaving

  1697. lie.

  1698. Second motivation is

  1699. realise what Christ has

  1700. done for you.

  1701. You were liberated.

  1702. You were set free.

  1703. And then we've got a

  1704. third motivation that

  1705. grace compels us.

  1706. In your daily choices,

  1707. compare what these

  1708. masters offer you.

1709. What fruit do you get?

  1710. And that's what verses

  1711. 20 to 23 are about.

  1712. There's two masters,

  1713. sin or God,

  1714. two results from

  1715. serving them,

  1716. death or eternal life,

  1717. two methods of

  1718. rewarding, wages or

  1719. free gift.

  1720. life.

  1721. So let's compare the

  1722. pair.

  1723. Hopefully that's not a

  1724. legal catchphrase that I

  1725. just said there, but

  1726. anyway, we can scrap

  1727. that.

1728. Back then when you were

1729. free from God, you were

1730. free from what God said

1731. and you were just obeying

1732. sin, what fruit did you

  1733. get?

  1734. Try and think back.

1735. What fruit did you get

  1736. when you just handed

  1737. yourself over to sin's

  1738. desires?

1739. When you were full of

  1740. impurity, envy, hatred,

  1741. lying, intentionally

  1742. causing others harm,

  1743. gossiping, slandering,

  1744. hating God, insolent,

  1745. proud, boasting,

  1746. disobedient to parents,

  1747. foolish, faithless,

  1748. heartless, ruthless.

1749. What fruit did you get

  1750. from that?

  1751. Didn't you get shame

  1752. inside of you?

  1753. Didn't you get

  1754. destruction of

  1755. relationships around

  1756. you?

  1757. Didn't you have the

  1758. knowledge that you

  1759. deserve God's

  1760. judgment, it's coming?

1761. What kind of fruit is

  1762. that?

  1763. What fruit does

  1764. righteousness offer?

  1765. Or to turn the

  1766. question a bit, when

  1767. is doing what God

  1768. has said made you

  1769. feel ashamed?

  1770. I can't think of

  1771. the time.

1772. I can think of the

  1773. time when people

1774. tried to put me to

  1775. shame.

  1776. That's very different

1777. from, so it could be

  1778. a painful thing, but

  1779. that's very different

  1780. from feeling ashamed.

  1781. That's a different

  1782. thing.

  1783. The fruit you get

  1784. from God is honour,

  1785. peace, eternal life.

  1786. These two masters

  1787. reward you by two

  1788. very different

  1789. methods.

  1790. Sin does want to

  1791. reward you.

  1792. Sin can't wait to

  1793. give you the paycheck

1794. at the end of the

  1795. day.

  1796. You've earned it.

  1797. Death.

1798. Can't wait to pay us.

  1799. But your new master

  1800. only wants to give

1801. you life as a free

  1802. gift.

  1803. He is generous.

  1804. He is gracious.

1805. That's the only way he

  1806. relates to us.

  1807. That's his character.

  1808. So I think the

  1809. motivation we're

1810. meant to have here is

  1811. it's not saying give

  1812. up what you really

1813. want now so that you

  1814. get eternal life later.

  1815. It's not saying that.

  1816. It's saying why would

1817. you want to keep doing

  1818. the things that cause

  1819. you shame?

  1820. Start enjoying the

  1821. eternal life you have

  1822. now.

  1823. I think this paragraph

1824. boils down to a thought

  1825. so profound.

  1826. It's not my thought.

  1827. I'm indebted to John

  1828. Piper for explaining

  1829. this.

  1830. It has totally reshaped

1831. the way I think of

  1832. obedience to God.

  1833. If God will always,

  1834. sorry, if God's will,

1835. if his will always leads

  1836. to eternal life,

  1837. always, that's the fruit,

1838. then I never have to

  1839. choose between doing

1840. what God wants me to do

1841. and what will bring me

1842. life and joy and peace.

  1843. They're never two options.

  1844. They're the same choice.

  1845. You never, ever, ever

  1846. have to choose between

  1847. doing what will truly

1848. satisfy you and what God

  1849. commands.

  1850. they're the same choice.

1851. It may be a painful path

  1852. at first,

  1853. but it will lead

  1854. to no shame,

  1855. the Lord's pleasure,

  1856. eternal life.

1857. I think we see this

  1858. principle played out

  1859. most fully when Jesus

  1860. was sweating drops of

1861. blood in the garden of

  1862. Gethsemane and he said,

1863. not my will that yours be

  1864. done.

  1865. And what's he saying

  1866. there?

  1867. It's a painful path.

  1868. Absolutely.

  1869. He's sweating drops of

  1870. blood.

  1871. I've never done that.

  1872. Painful.

1873. Did he want to go to the

  1874. cross?

  1875. No.

  1876. Absolutely not.

  1877. In one sense.

1878. But then he prayed this,

1879. not my will but yours be

  1880. done.

  1881. His most fundamental

1882. desire was to trust that

  1883. the Father's will would

1884. result in life and peace

  1885. and joy.

  1886. And did it?

  1887. And honour.

  1888. Did it.

  1889. Didn't we celebrate that

  1890. it did last Sunday?

1891. As sin claims that you

  1892. will never be satisfied

1893. until you give in to it,

  1894. you can say,

1895. you are lying to me.

1896. You can't wait to pay me

  1897. in death.

1898. I never have to choose

  1899. between submitting to

1900. God's will and what will

  1901. actually give me joy,

  1902. everlasting joy.

1903. They are always the same

  1904. choice.

  1905. I think that's a

  1906. profound thought.

  1907. It's a profound weapon

  1908. to fight with sin.

  1909. I think there's one final

  1910. motivation in this

  1911. passage.

  1912. It's a bit disguised.

  1913. I think it's a hint that

  1914. we need chapters 7 and 8

  1915. still to fully understand

  1916. ourselves as being in

  1917. Christ.

  1918. So in verse 19 we've got

  1919. I'm speaking in human

  1920. terms about this slavery

  1921. metaphor because of your

  1922. natural limitations.

  1923. So we're slow to

  1924. understand who we now

  1925. are in Christ.

1926. We're slow to get the

  1927. fact that being free

  1928. from all constraints,

  1929. ruling your own life,

  1930. doesn't exist.

1931. That there's only sin or

  1932. God as our master.

1933. We're slow to accept that.

  1934. We need this slavery

  1935. metaphor to understand

  1936. that Jesus has liberated

  1937. us.

  1938. So we need it.

  1939. But the analogy isn't

  1940. good enough.

  1941. This breaks down here,

  1942. people.

  1943. We need to understand

  1944. this.

1945. And I think in our modern

  1946. thinking we might go,

1947. of course slavery is not a

  1948. good example.

  1949. That's awful.

  1950. It's dehumanising.

  1951. It's brutal.

  1952. Of course that's a not

  1953. good enough analogy.

  1954. But that's thinking about

  1955. slavery with modern eyes.

1956. If we go back into Paul's

1957. day in Roman times, it

  1958. really depended, and talk

1959. to Sean if you want to know

  1960. more about this.

  1961. He's the historian here.

  1962. But hopefully he's agreeing

1963. with me when I say this,

1964. that it really depended on

  1965. who your master was,

1966. whether slavery was a bad

  1967. thing or not.

  1968. You could have more

  1969. security, more honour,

  1970. more status, more

  1971. prosperity if you're a

  1972. slave in Caesar's

  1973. household than if you're

  1974. a free person.

  1975. Just another pleb.

  1976. Is there a...

  1977. Okay, great.

  1978. Good.

  1979. Good.

1980. It's more dependent on who

  1981. your master was, whether

1982. slavery was bad or not, back

  1983. in Paul's day.

  1984. And in biblical language,

1985. being slaves of God, Paul is

  1986. proud of that title.

1987. He opens every letter with

  1988. that.

1989. I am a servant, or you could

1990. say slave, of Christ Jesus.

1991. There's nothing to be ashamed

  1992. of.

1993. What greater master could you

  1994. have?

1995. And that is an honouring

  1996. title.

1997. When we talk about saint, to

  1998. be a saint, that's basically

  1999. what we're saying.

  2000. We're saying we're totally

  2001. dedicated to God.

2002. We are set apart for God.

2003. Biblically, being a slave of

2004. God is an honouring thing.

2005. So why is this analogy of

2006. slavery not the full picture?

  2007. I think it's because we need

2008. to get to chapter 8.

  2009. Chapter 8, verse 15.

2010. For you did not receive the

2011. spirit of slavery to fall back

2012. into fear, as you relate to

2013. God, but you have received the

2014. spirit of adoption as sons, by

2015. whom we cry, Abba, Father.

2016. I think we are only as much a

2017. slave as Jesus Christ is

  2018. himself to God.

2019. We need to learn to think of

2020. ourselves as in Jesus Christ.

2021. You read the Gospels, especially

  2022. John's Gospel.

2023. Jesus delighted to do the

  2024. Father's will.

  2025. It wasn't a burden.

2026. Anything he said and did, he

2027. said, was what God the Father

  2028. told him to do.

2029. So in a sense, he was a slave of

  2030. his father.

2031. But, gee, that analogy isn't good

  2032. enough.

2033. That analogy gets just expanded

2034. out when you think of it in terms

  2035. of sonships.

  2036. We are children.

2037. The devotion is not just the

  2038. devotion of a slave.

2039. It's the devotion of a child to

  2040. their loving father.

2041. So there's our weapons in this

  2042. passage to fight sin.

2043. How will this thinking go with us

2044. into this week and beyond?

2045. A sin wants you to think that you

2046. are compelled to obey it.

2047. You will never be satisfied until you

2048. give in to its demands.

2049. What will motivate you not to go on

  2050. sinning?

2051. When that lustful thought and

  2052. temptation is just overwhelming.

2053. I have to keep dwelling on this.

2054. When that untrue comment just

  2055. screams out, vindicate yourself,

  2056. your reputation.

2057. When that hurtful word is pleading,

  2058. get vengeance.

  2059. Get it now.

  2060. It'll feel so good.

2061. When the envy of our neighbour's

2062. house and whatever they've got

  2063. spouse, children says,

2064. you won't be happy until you have

  2065. what they have.

2066. When the idea that your value is

2067. tied to you being a competent

2068. parent or competent at your job

2069. or school or sport and so all your

2070. concern and all your energy has to

2071. be devoted to this thing.

2072. We could keep describing how sin

2073. might pop up in our week but whatever

2074. the expression of sin is, it comes

2075. with brutal force, doesn't it?

2076. It just feels like I have to give in

  2077. to this.

  2078. You must obey me.

2079. Don't fight it simply by laying down

2080. God's law saying God says do this.

2081. God tells me I must do this.

2082. That is a true comment but it's not

  2083. powerful enough.

  2084. We've got stronger weapons.

  2085. Think of yourself.

2086. Preach to yourself who you now are

2087. in Jesus Christ, our Lord.

2088. See sin as the enslaving lie it is.

  2089. You promise satisfaction.

2090. At the end of this, it is going to

  2091. pay me in death.

2092. Shame and destruction around me.

2093. Remember your liberation in Christ.

2094. Like that old boss who calls you at

  2095. 9.15.

2096. You've got no authority over me.

  2097. I don't have to obey you.

  2098. I have a new master now.

2099. The fact that I have a new master

  2100. means you're not it.

2101. I don't have to listen to you.

2102. And look ahead and compare what fruit

2103. they're going to give you.

2104. Aren't you sick of the payment that

  2105. sin gives you?

2106. Like I know the feeling too well.

2107. I don't have to choose between my joy

  2108. and what God says.

2109. They are the same choice.

2110. And so I want to choose life.

2111. I want to choose peace.

2112. It might be painful at first but

2113. it's going to lead to life.

2114. And I'm not ashamed of submitting to

  2115. God's law, God's way.

2116. I'm only a slave as much as Jesus Christ

  2117. is a slave.

2118. Obeying God is not a burden.

  2119. It's not a dutiful burden.

  2120. I'm not missing out.

2121. I trust that my father only wants to

  2122. give me life.

  2123. Brothers and sisters, Christian,

  2124. you're not your own.

  2125. You're not your own.

2126. You were bought at a price.

2127. You have been set free from sin's reign

  2128. over you.

2129. You belong to a new master.

2130. Constrained, compelled by his love.

2131. In Jesus Christ, your Lord, is where

  2132. you will find freedom.

2133. Would you please pray with me?

  2134. Let's pray.

2135. Lord, I pray that you would help us to

2136. think of ourselves as being so united to

2137. Jesus that what is true for him is true

  2138. for us.

2139. Lord, I pray that you would help us to not

2140. just hate the consequences of sin but also

  2141. hate the sin itself.

2142. I pray that you would help us to see how

  2143. enslaving it is.

2144. I pray that you would help us to rejoice and

2145. think of ourselves as being free from sin's

  2146. reign.

2147. Help us to realise the freedom we now have

  2148. belonging to you.

2149. Lord, help us to choose what will give life for

2150. us and those around us.

2151. Father, I pray that you would press this into

2152. our hearts so that we fight sin with grace

2153. and not with law so that we can get the

2154. victory so that we can honour you in how we

  2155. live.

2156. Lord, we need your help.

2157. So please do these things in Jesus' name.

  2158. Amen.

  2159. Amen.

  2160. Amen.

  2161. Amen.

  2162. Amen.

  2163. Amen.

  2164. Amen.

  2165. Amen.

  2166. Amen.

  2167. Amen.

  2168. Amen.

  2169. Amen.

  2170. Amen.

  2171. Amen.

  2172. Amen.

  2173. Amen.

  2174. Amen.

  2175. Amen.

  2176. Amen.

  2177. Amen.

  2178. Amen.

  2179. Amen.

  2180. Amen.
