  1. Since we've built the Hubble telescope, we've looked into the heavens.

  2. He's not there.

  3. Where is he?

  4. We've looked at the atomic level.

  5. He's not there.

  6. Most of our society in Australia have concluded God isn't there.

  7. He's just not obvious.

  8. I'm so confident of this.

  9. People don't think there's some grand meaning and purpose to life.

  10. You can create your own meaning.

  11. And who are you to tell me that my meaning is wrong?

  12. Now, we Christians, apart from appealing to nature going,

  13. yeah, the images that came back from the Hubble telescope just blew our minds.

  14. There's the glory there.

  15. How can you not see that?

  16. The atomic level, there's glory.

  17. There's more there than we even realise.

  18. Apart from appealing to that, we say God did show up.

  19. Jesus, God's son, came in the flesh, in real time and space.

  20. We have his words written for us.

  21. He did things that only God could do.

  22. He came back from the dead.

  23. God has revealed himself clearly in his son, Jesus.

  24. But then, even Jesus' contemporaries, who themselves were waiting for the Messiah, God's kingdom,

  25. they were the ones who were crying out, crucify him.

  26. Crucify him.

  27. He didn't restore Israel's freedom and prosperity.

  28. He didn't make Jerusalem the political capital of the world.

  29. He didn't make Jerusalem the world.

  30. He didn't make Jerusalem the world.

  31. Crucified Messiah.

  32. Where's the glory in that?

  33. The glory doesn't seem obvious either back then or today.

  34. Even as Christians, we can struggle with doubt because of the lack of this obvious glory.

  35. Can the church and the gospel really be the most significant thing about life

  36. when so few people in our society cherish it?

  37. Doesn't that just nag at you sometimes?

  38. Is this really the most significant thing?

  39. I keep struggling with my sin.

  40. If Jesus is ruling my life now, why don't I have that full glory yet?

  41. Why not devote myself and my life to things that are obviously glorious,

  42. like my career and relationships and pleasure and prosperity and so on?

  43. Even as Christians, we can struggle with this sense of lack of glory.

  44. And this is where our mini-series in the parables in chapter 13,

  45. Jesus has told us the secrets of the kingdom of heaven to help us with this.

  46. That before the kingdom comes in full and obvious and gloriously for all to see,

  47. it has come secretly.

  48. It is hidden.

  49. It has come through the word of the gospel about Jesus, what he has done, who he is.

  50. But like the parables of the soils we've heard, many will reject this word.

  51. But there will be a fruitful harvest with birds of the air from all over the world

  52. coming to rest in this kingdom's shade.

  53. For those with eyes to see, Jesus' death is like that small mustard seed

  54. that from that death produces this kingdom.

  55. Reconciled to God the Father, people from all over the world, anyone who believes,

  56. the kingdom has come.

  57. It's just come hidden, secret, through the word of Jesus,

  58. starting from the inside, working in the hearts of people.

  59. That's where you'll find it.

  60. So, this morning, we have two final parables.

  61. Jesus finishes this block of teaching with this first parable,

  62. which is going to answer this question, I think.

  63. Why do people need to find the kingdom now when it's still hidden?

  64. If it's so hidden, why do people need to find it?

  65. I think the second parable is going to answer this question.

  66. How will people see and hear this hidden kingdom?

  67. Okay, so let's get into these parables.

  68. So first, why do people need to find this hidden kingdom now?

  69. The answer, because the net is coming.

  70. One day, the kingdom will come very observably,

  71. as people claim that they want.

  72. It will be plain for all to see, but in that day, it will be too late.

  73. It is a terrifying day.

  74. A simple fishing story carries the weight of the eternal destiny

  75. of yourself and everyone you know.

  76. Jesus says,

  77. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea

  78. and gathered fish of every kind.

  79. When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good

  80. into containers but threw away the bad.

  81. The net isn't about the church going about the missionary Great Commission.

  82. We're given the explanation.

  83. So it will be at the end of the age.

  84. This is a picture at the end of history as we know it.

  85. So the parable of the wheat and the weeds with things being mixed now.

  86. There's those who believe, those who don't.

  87. But Christ's priority was his wheat.

  88. So the focus was on things being mixed now,

  89. whereas this parable seems to focus just on the end of time.

  90. And the point is clear and obvious, isn't it?

  91. Marie's already brought it out in the kids' talk.

  92. Kids can understand this.

  93. A great sorting will occur.

  94. Don't confuse the hiddenness now for the fact that it will be obvious one day

  95. and a sorting will occur.

  96. So this image.

  97. Please don't picture this little handheld fishing net.

  98. That's not what it's talking about.

  99. This is a huge drag net that would be attached to either two boats

  100. and just sweep whatever comes between the two boats

  101. or it would be attached to the shore

  102. and attached to a boat that just sweeps the whole area.

  103. So none of this punzi handheld thing.

  104. This is a huge net.

  105. And the fish in its path can do nothing to avoid it.

  106. Like I'm picturing little Nemo swimming

  107. with this net going to the bottom of the ocean floor

  108. to the rim of the surface.

  109. And you can't go under it.

  110. You can't go over it.

  111. You will not go through it.

  112. Everyone will be caught in it.

  113. You can't avoid it.

  114. Your neighbour can't avoid it.

  115. Fish of every kind will be caught.

  116. Now that might be suggesting every kind is in every culture,

  117. people all over the world.

  118. Maybe it's just saying every kind is in those good, those bad.

  119. Everyone will be caught up.

  120. Once it's full,

  121. once everyone, those alive and those in their graves coming out,

  122. not even death will hide you from this net.

  123. You'll be brought ashore for sorting.

  124. There's a very clear point.

  125. The kingdom will come obviously one day.

  126. It will come obviously.

  127. And a great sorting will take place.

  128. It is unavoidable.

  129. And there's only two groups, two outcomes,

  130. the righteous and the wicked,

  131. those kept,

  132. those thrown in the fiery furnace.

  133. So the question I've been wrestling with is,

  134. what does this parable add?

  135. That the parable of the wheat and the weeds,

  136. it talked about the weeds being burnt up in the fiery furnace.

  137. It's exactly the same phrase.

  138. And the wheat gathered into the barn,

  139. shining like the sun.

  140. Now maybe this picture,

  141. this water picture,

  142. complements the agricultural picture.

  143. Maybe.

  144. Maybe it's a reminder.

  145. I think there's more to it.

  146. I think there's two details that add a new emphasis.

  147. Not necessarily anything new,

  148. but a new emphasis.

  149. Notice that the focus here is on what happens to the evil.

  150. Parable, we only get shown the negative outcome.

  151. In verses 49 and 50,

  152. it's the fiery furnace where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  153. So it doesn't talk about heaven.

  154. Now the parable shouldn't be pushed too far.

  155. This is an important point with interpreting parables.

  156. It usually only has one main point.

  157. Otherwise, the good fish are kept for eating.

  158. That's not what it's saying.

  159. And it's a bit odd,

  160. picturing fish sitting around the great heavenly banquet.

  161. So let's not push this parable too far.

  162. The focus is on what happens to the evil.

  163. The other detail that helps us understand this,

  164. I think, is how it starts.

  165. Notice in verse 47.

  166. Again.

  167. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like.

  168. In verse 45, last week,

  169. we very easily accepted the again.

  170. Combining those two parables about

  171. the treasure hidden in the field,

  172. and again,

  173. the kingdom of heaven is like a great pearl.

  174. But here we have another again.

  175. Which probably shows that we

  176. stuffed up how we broke up this passage.

  177. But,

  178. these three parables seem to be linked.

  179. The net seems to be the negative side

  180. to the positive appeal of

  181. find the treasure,

  182. find the pearl,

  183. otherwise the net.

  184. There's those who,

  185. in this life,

  186. find Jesus

  187. and the treasure

  188. of living under his good rule.

  189. Who,

  190. who,

  191. who,

  192. who sacrifice everything under his feet.

  193. And don't count it as loss,

  194. but gain.

  195. There's those.

  196. But if,

  197. those who fail to find that,

  198. fail to,

  199. see Jesus as worthy

  200. of your life,

  201. treat him as insignificant,

  202. well,

  203. there's only a terrible outcome.

  204. An unavoidable outcome.

  205. I think these three parables

  206. paint a picture of what Jesus

  207. has already said

  208. in chapter 10,

  209. verse 39.

  210. Whoever finds his life here,

  211. will lose it.

  212. But whoever loses his life

  213. for my sake,

  214. will find it.

  215. Now,

  216. I don't think this is trying

  217. to scare you

  218. into becoming a Christian.

  219. I think it's a very good thing

  220. that God hates evil.

  221. And he's going to do

  222. something about it.

  223. How awful a God

  224. would be

  225. if he didn't care

  226. about evil.

  227. That is a terrifying thought.

  228. It is a good thing

  229. that God hates evil

  230. and that he's going to do

  231. something about it.

  232. The terrifying thing is

  233. if you're someone

  234. who does that evil,

  235. standing before such a God,

  236. which is all of us,

  237. isn't it?

  238. Jesus is loving us

  239. by warning you

  240. of what will occur

  241. if you reject

  242. eternal life.

  243. God hates evil.

  244. Now,

  245. I heard someone

  246. the other day

  247. dismiss

  248. the resurrection

  249. saying,

  250. yeah,

  251. I don't really

  252. believe all those stories

  253. about people

  254. seeing a great light

  255. when they're on

  256. the operating table,

  257. those kind of things.

  258. The person saying this

  259. isn't one of those people

  260. who saw a light.

  261. The person saying this

  262. is the one

  263. who rose from the dead.

  264. He has authority

  265. over death.

  266. He has tasted hell

  267. on the cross.

  268. He knows the fiery furnace.

  269. The son of God

  270. sweated drops of blood

  271. anticipating what he was

  272. about to endure.

  273. over.

  274. He went to the cross

  275. feeling the full force

  276. of God's anger

  277. so that you and I

  278. would escape

  279. this fiery furnace.

  280. He has displayed

  281. his love

  282. so incredibly,

  283. sacrificing his son

  284. to give you

  285. eternal life.

  286. If you reject that,

  287. you reject that love.

  288. You will only face

  289. God's anger.

  290. The weeping

  291. pictures the suffering.

  292. The gnashing of teeth

  293. pictures despair

  294. in that place.

  295. And what's scary

  296. in these images

  297. is that they're images,

  298. they're metaphors.

  299. Heaven for the righteous

  300. is described as a banquet

  301. as I referred to earlier.

  302. But that's just using

  303. imagery so that we can

  304. understand it.

  305. It's better than a banquet.

  306. It's still a picture.

  307. So too with these

  308. descriptions.

  309. It's just a picture

  310. of the awfulness.

  311. Come to Jesus now.

  312. You will find

  313. full forgiveness.

  314. He wants you

  315. to find him

  316. his treasure.

  317. He doesn't want you

  318. in the fiery furnace.

  319. He takes no delight

  320. in the death

  321. of the wicked.

  322. No delight whatsoever.

  323. Come to him.

  324. You will find forgiveness.

  325. You will find

  326. a treasure

  327. better than anything

  328. else you know in life.

  329. Come before

  330. that net arrives.

  331. Find God's love

  332. before you face

  333. God's anger.

  334. treasure.

  335. It's hard to be sure

  336. whether Jesus

  337. is speaking

  338. these parables

  339. to the crowd

  340. still or just

  341. his disciples.

  342. I'm not sure

  343. we can be certain

  344. on that.

  345. But the implication

  346. for us

  347. who have already

  348. found this treasure

  349. shouldn't it fill us

  350. with thankfulness?

  351. That awful

  352. fiery furnace,

  353. I should have been

  354. that bad fish

  355. thrown away.

  356. But he was

  357. thrown away

  358. so that I'm

  359. gathered in.

  360. It should fill us

  361. with incredible

  362. thankfulness.

  363. And there is

  364. zero,

  365. zero room

  366. for pride

  367. in the Christian

  368. life that I

  369. believed while

  370. others didn't.

  371. There's no room

  372. for that.

  373. He gave us

  374. the secrets

  375. of the kingdom.

  376. There is no room

  377. for pride.

  378. I don't have

  379. to fear,

  380. if you've found

  381. Jesus,

  382. you do not have

  383. to fear

  384. this final sorting.

  385. You're one

  386. of the righteous,

  387. I'm one of the

  388. righteous,

  389. not because of

  390. us of course,

  391. but because

  392. his death

  393. washes us

  394. and his righteousness

  395. is counted to us.

  396. We don't have to

  397. fear this

  398. for our sake,

  399. but we should

  400. fear it

  401. for others'

  402. sake.

  403. that treasure

  404. we talk about,

  405. that is not

  406. for us to keep.

  407. We need to feel

  408. the urgency,

  409. the seriousness

  410. of what's coming.

  411. That treasure,

  412. we're meant to

  413. bring it out

  414. so that others

  415. see it,

  416. hear it,

  417. before the net

  418. comes.

  419. Share your

  420. treasure with

  421. whoever will

  422. take it.

  423. And I don't

  424. think it's easy

  425. to believe this

  426. because there's

  427. going to be

  428. family members

  429. who don't believe

  430. and that is

  431. just agony.

  432. It's like

  433. the Apostle

  434. Paul.

  435. He wished

  436. he himself

  437. could be

  438. cut off

  439. just so his

  440. own people

  441. could be

  442. brought into

  443. Christ.

  444. To believe

  445. this net

  446. is coming

  447. is actually

  448. a painful

  449. path.

  450. But we need

  451. to see people

  452. with the

  453. seriousness of

  454. who they

  455. are and

  456. these outcomes.

  457. I'm going

  458. to quote

  459. C.S.

  460. Lewis because

  461. I think he

  462. just paints

  463. a picture of

  464. how serious

  465. our interactions

  466. with each

  467. other are.

  468. Let me

  469. quote C.S.

  470. Lewis.

  471. The load

  472. or weight

  473. or burden

  474. of my

  475. neighbour's

  476. glory

  477. should be

  478. laid daily

  479. on my

  480. back,

  481. a load

  482. so heavy

  483. that only

  484. humility

  485. can carry

  486. it and

  487. the backs

  488. of the

  489. proud

  490. will be

  491. broken.

  492. It is

  493. a serious

  494. thing to

  495. live in

  496. a society

  497. of possible

  498. gods and

  499. goddesses

  500. to remember

  501. that the

  502. dullest,

  503. most

  504. uninteresting

  505. person you

  506. talk to

  507. may one

  508. day be a

  509. creature

  510. which if

  511. you saw

  512. it now

  513. you would

  514. be strongly

  515. tempted to

  516. worship

  517. or else

  518. a horror,

  519. a corruption

  520. such as you

  521. now meet

  522. if at all

  523. only in a

  524. nightmare.

  525. All day

  526. long in

  527. some degree

  528. we are

  529. helping each

  530. other to

  531. one or

  532. other of

  533. these

  534. destinations.

  535. It is in

  536. the light of

  537. these overwhelming

  538. possibilities,

  539. it is with

  540. the awe

  541. proper to

  542. them that

  543. we should

  544. conduct all

  545. our dealings

  546. with one

  547. another,

  548. all friendships,

  549. all loves,

  550. all play,

  551. all politics.

  552. There are no

  553. ordinary people.

  554. You have never

  555. talked to a

  556. mere mortal.

  557. Nations,

  558. cultures,

  559. arts,

  560. civilisation,

  561. these are

  562. mortal.

  563. Their life

  564. is the

  565. ours like

  566. the life

  567. of a

  568. gnat,

  569. but it

  570. is

  571. immortals

  572. whom we

  573. joke with,

  574. work with,

  575. marry,

  576. snub,

  577. exploit,

  578. immortal

  579. horrors or

  580. everlasting

  581. splendours.

  582. So how

  583. are you

  584. helping people

  585. prepare for

  586. this net?

  587. Interest

  588. rates,

  589. costs of

  590. living are

  591. rising.

  592. What

  593. expenses

  594. are you

  595. going to

  596. cut back

  597. on?

  598. Missionary

  599. support?

  600. How could

  601. you connect

  602. your

  603. Christian

  604. and

  605. non-Christian

  606. friends?

  607. Make them

  608. rub shoulders.

  609. Obviously we

  610. can take those

  611. fleeting

  612. opportunities,

  613. like I

  614. think I

  615. wait too

  616. much to

  617. go,

  618. oh,

  619. I'm

  620. going to

  621. wait for

  622. the right

  623. moment to

  624. have that

  625. conversation.

  626. Sometimes we

  627. just need to

  628. jump in,

  629. that quick

  630. phrase.

  631. We don't

  632. have to

  633. give two

  634. ways to

  635. live,

  636. track through

  637. the whole

  638. time,

  639. just a

  640. quick

  641. phrase.

  642. I think

  643. admitting our

  644. own sin is

  645. absolutely

  646. crucial.

  647. Otherwise people

  648. will think

  649. we're saying

  650. I'm confident,

  651. I'm proud in

  652. my own efforts.

  653. You've got to

  654. admit your

  655. sin for people

  656. to understand

  657. Jesus.

  658. And I

  659. wonder when

  660. we complain

  661. and when we

  662. defend our

  663. reputations and

  664. we're consumed

  665. with our

  666. personal interests,

  667. how can

  668. people see

  669. the treasure

  670. when we're

  671. doing that?

  672. When we're

  673. clinging to

  674. the same

  675. fleeting things

  676. that everyone

  677. else does,

  678. how can people

  679. see the

  680. treasure when

  681. we do

  682. that?

  683. Or to put

  684. it positively,

  685. there's great

  686. opportunity,

  687. in hardship.

  688. When health

  689. is failing,

  690. when you

  691. are wrong,

  692. you are

  693. treated unfairly,

  694. unjustly,

  695. there are

  696. actually opportunities

  697. to show the

  698. treasure I

  699. reckon.

  700. Because that's

  701. when the

  702. surface stuff

  703. is stripped

  704. away.

  705. And if you

  706. still have

  707. joy,

  708. people might

  709. go,

  710. how on earth

  711. do you still

  712. have joy in

  713. that time?

  714. time.

  715. I heard a

  716. story of a

  717. Christian boss

  718. whose employee

  719. made a

  720. mistake that

  721. cost the

  722. company a lot

  723. of money.

  724. And he had

  725. to go into

  726. his superiors

  727. and incredibly,

  728. he took the

  729. blame for it.

  730. Now, this

  731. employee was

  732. amazed.

  733. She had

  734. plenty of

  735. bosses who

  736. had taken the

  737. credit for her

  738. work, but this

  739. boss took

  740. the blame.

  741. He could

  742. have just

  743. thrown her

  744. under the

  745. bus, she

  746. probably would

  747. have been

  748. fired, but

  749. this boss took

  750. the blame for

  751. it.

  752. And that

  753. just shocked

  754. her.

  755. She went to

  756. him and she

  757. kept pressing

  758. him like,

  759. why did you

  760. do that?

  761. That is so

  762. odd.

  763. And eventually

  764. he gave in and

  765. he told her,

  766. because of

  767. Jesus, because

  768. he took the

  769. blame for me.

  770. And that was

  771. the start of

  772. her finding

  773. Jesus.

  774. Those

  775. hardships, I

  776. think it's

  777. just a little

  778. nice picture,

  779. those everyday

  780. hardships are

  781. actually opportunities

  782. to show our

  783. treasure.

  784. So the net is

  785. coming, it is

  786. unavoidable.

  787. Jesus, the

  788. judge, is

  789. bringing it, but

  790. he wants people

  791. to find the

  792. treasure now.

  793. So let's do

  794. whatever we can

  795. to bring it

  796. out for people.

  797. So Jesus

  798. finishes this

  799. block of

  800. teaching with

  801. one final

  802. parable.

  803. This time

  804. it's directed

  805. just for the

  806. disciples.

  807. So we've

  808. heard why

  809. people need to

  810. find this

  811. hidden treasure,

  812. because the

  813. net is coming.

  814. Our question

  815. here I think

  816. is how?

  817. How will

  818. people see

  819. and hear this

  820. hidden kingdom

  821. treasure?

  822. So this one's

  823. a bit more

  824. tricky.

  825. The other

  826. one was a

  827. pretty obvious

  828. explanation.

  829. This one's a

  830. bit more

  831. tricky.

  832. Verse 52.

  833. Therefore

  834. every scribe

  835. who has been

  836. trained for the

  837. kingdom of

  838. heaven is like

  839. a master of

  840. a house who

  841. brings out of

  842. his treasure

  843. what is new

  844. and what is

  845. old.

  846. Okay, so

  847. before we get

  848. into the detail,

  849. I'm going to

  850. say up front

  851. what I think

  852. this parable

  853. was about.

  854. I think in

  855. short, Jesus

  856. is calling all

  857. of his

  858. disciples to

  859. teach others,

  860. to share

  861. what we've

  862. learnt.

  863. Now, obviously

  864. not in a

  865. capital T

  866. sense.

  867. The book of

  868. James says

  869. those called

  870. to be Bible

  871. teachers in a

  872. formal capacity

  873. that Christ

  874. has equipped.

  875. We are judged

  876. more strictly,

  877. harshly, and

  878. rightly so.

  879. So I don't

  880. think everyone

  881. should count

  882. capital T,

  883. but I don't

  884. know how else

  885. to say this.

  886. Small T.

  887. All disciples

  888. are small T

  889. teachers.

  890. And I think

  891. this tells us

  892. a third

  893. purpose of

  894. these parables.

  895. So Matt

  896. took us

  897. through the

  898. first purpose,

  899. that parables

  900. actually divide

  901. people.

  902. Some will

  903. find them

  904. appealing and

  905. go deeper

  906. into understanding

  907. Jesus.

  908. Others will be

  909. like, well,

  910. that's silly

  911. and stupid,

  912. and actually

  913. it will close

  914. their minds

  915. to Jesus.

  916. So that's

  917. one purpose

  918. of parables.

  919. Then Simon

  920. took us

  921. through the

  922. second purpose

  923. of parables,

  924. and that was

  925. for Jesus

  926. to be

  927. fulfilling

  928. the Psalms.

  929. That in

  930. one sense,

  931. Jesus'

  932. teaching is

  933. just all

  934. the stuff

  935. in the

  936. Old Testament,

  937. but the

  938. way he

  939. brings it

  940. together,

  941. especially in

  942. these parables,

  943. it shows

  944. something new.

  945. So there's

  946. a second

  947. purpose of

  948. the parables.

  949. It's showing

  950. something new

  951. about the

  952. kingdom,

  953. even though

  954. the Old

  955. Testament

  956. pointed to

  957. it.

  958. Here we've

  959. got a third

  960. purpose of

  961. the parables,

  962. and it's

  963. for us.

  964. His

  965. disciples are

  966. meant to

  967. become

  968. teachers.

  969. teachers.

  970. This is

  971. to train

  972. us to

  973. teach

  974. others.

  975. Okay, let's

  976. get into the

  977. detail for a

  978. second.

  979. Yep, let's

  980. go.

  981. I don't know

  982. why I paused.

  983. Verse 51,

  984. this starts

  985. with Jesus

  986. asking his

  987. disciples, who

  988. is certainly

  989. the twelve

  990. apostles, but

  991. I think it's

  992. likely that it

  993. includes men

  994. and women,

  995. because just

  996. before we

  997. have this

  998. chapter on

  999. the parables,

  1000. that's when

  1001. Jesus looks

  1002. around and

  1003. goes, here,

  1004. here are my

  1005. family, my

  1006. mother, my

  1007. sister.

  1008. So I

  1009. suspect this

  1010. is probably

  1011. more than

  1012. just the

  1013. twelve

  1014. apostles standing

  1015. here.

  1016. Have you

  1017. understood all

  1018. these parables?

  1019. Have you

  1020. understood all

  1021. these things?

  1022. Yes.

  1023. I find that

  1024. answer funny.

  1025. I picture a

  1026. classroom, the

  1027. teacher teaching

  1028. calculus for the

  1029. first time, and

  1030. the classroom is

  1031. just like, yes,

  1032. we get it.

  1033. Yep.

  1034. We're good.

  1035. They do

  1036. understand in

  1037. part.

  1038. They're not

  1039. rebuked for

  1040. being arrogant.

  1041. They do

  1042. understand, but

  1043. gee, they've

  1044. got so much

  1045. more to learn.

  1046. They need

  1047. Jesus to die

  1048. and rise

  1049. again.

  1050. They need

  1051. the spirit

  1052. of truth to

  1053. help them

  1054. understand.

  1055. Isn't that

  1056. true of all

  1057. of us?

  1058. We can say,

  1059. yes, but

  1060. gee, I've

  1061. got a lot

  1062. more to

  1063. learn.

  1064. How many

  1065. times do

  1066. we open

  1067. the Bible

  1068. and think

  1069. we're reading

  1070. a familiar

  1071. passage and

  1072. it just hits

  1073. us again

  1074. with something

  1075. fresh?

  1076. So yes, but

  1077. we always go

  1078. deeper.

  1079. I think I'm

  1080. stealing this

  1081. from somewhere,

  1082. but I can't

  1083. quote them.

  1084. God's word

  1085. isn't something

  1086. we ever master.

  1087. God's word

  1088. is something

  1089. that's meant

  1090. to increasingly

  1091. master us.

  1092. I like that

  1093. so I thought

  1094. I'd share it.

  1095. We are always

  1096. going deeper

  1097. in this

  1098. treasure.

  1099. So Jesus

  1100. connects their

  1101. understanding of

  1102. his parables to

  1103. this picture of

  1104. this homeowner

  1105. who brings out

  1106. these treasures.

  1107. So it's about

  1108. all his

  1109. disciples.

  1110. Now I think

  1111. where we get

  1112. thrown and

  1113. confused is

  1114. this idea

  1115. of a scribe,

  1116. a teacher

  1117. of the law.

  1118. Now I didn't

  1119. know this until

  1120. preparing for

  1121. today, but

  1122. apparently there

  1123. were scribes

  1124. who were

  1125. devoted to

  1126. hard sayings

  1127. in scripture,

  1128. which would

  1129. include things

  1130. like parables,

  1131. devoted to

  1132. things concerning

  1133. the end of

  1134. history, end

  1135. times.

  1136. And they were

  1137. called apocryphal

  1138. scribes.

  1139. And that

  1140. seems to fit

  1141. this chapter.

  1142. All these

  1143. parables are

  1144. about the

  1145. promised end

  1146. time kingdom.

  1147. It's just that

  1148. it's come

  1149. secretly before

  1150. it becomes

  1151. full and

  1152. obvious.

  1153. So how's

  1154. this like being

  1155. the owner of

  1156. a house who

  1157. brings out his

  1158. treasure new

  1159. and old?

  1160. Notice the

  1161. change in the

  1162. use of treasure

  1163. here from

  1164. those earlier

  1165. parables.

  1166. It brings out

  1167. of his

  1168. treasure.

  1169. So it's not

  1170. saying external.

  1171. It's now his

  1172. treasure.

  1173. I think that's

  1174. like how Jesus

  1175. used the word

  1176. in chapter 12

  1177. verse 35.

  1178. For the good

  1179. person out of

  1180. his good

  1181. treasure brings

  1182. forth good.

  1183. And the evil

  1184. person out of

  1185. his evil

  1186. treasure brings

  1187. forth evil.

  1188. So in terms of

  1189. our words.

  1190. So it's actually

  1191. what's in your

  1192. heart.

  1193. It's the

  1194. individual

  1195. person that's

  1196. pictured here.

  1197. And I think

  1198. being the

  1199. master of a

  1200. house, I'm

  1201. not sure of

  1202. this one, I'll

  1203. try it out on

  1204. you, is

  1205. Jesus is giving

  1206. authority to

  1207. share this

  1208. treasure.

  1209. You are the

  1210. master of the

  1211. house.

  1212. You can bring

  1213. it out.

  1214. You can give

  1215. it.

  1216. So to the

  1217. degree that we

  1218. grasp what

  1219. Jesus is saying

  1220. about his

  1221. kingdom here,

  1222. to that degree

  1223. you have

  1224. treasure that

  1225. you can bring

  1226. out as a

  1227. scribe, as

  1228. a teacher, for

  1229. the sake of

  1230. others.

  1231. We don't

  1232. bring it out

  1233. to show off.

  1234. We bring it

  1235. out to give

  1236. it so that

  1237. others become

  1238. rich.

  1239. And what is

  1240. this new and

  1241. old treasure

  1242. we're meant to

  1243. bring out?

  1244. I think the

  1245. most natural

  1246. reading of this

1247. is to see it as

  1248. the revelation

  1249. from God.

  1250. A Jewish

  1251. expert in the

  1252. Old Testament

  1253. could only

  1254. bring out his

  1255. treasure concerning

  1256. the old

  1257. revelation.

  1258. But if you see

  1259. Jesus and his

  1260. kingdom as the

  1261. answer to all

  1262. those Old

  1263. Testament promises,

  1264. you can bring

  1265. out the new

  1266. and the old

  1267. and how it all

  1268. comes together

  1269. in Jesus.

  1270. So I'm going

  1271. to try and

  1272. highlight this

  1273. point as sharply

  1274. as I can.

  1275. a child who

  1276. has a very

  1277. rudimentary

  1278. understanding that

  1279. the whole Bible

  1280. is about Jesus,

  1281. who sings Colin

  1282. Buchanan songs

  1283. going,

  1284. Jesus is the

  1285. king,

  1286. ruler over

  1287. everything.

  1288. That wasn't in

  1289. my script but I

  1290. just got caught

  1291. up in Colin.

  1292. That child is

  1293. more of a

  1294. scholar than

  1295. any religious

  1296. author or

  1297. teacher alive

  1298. today or the

  1299. Pharisees of old

  1300. who don't see

  1301. Jesus.

  1302. They're a

  1303. scholar.

  1304. Jesus is the

  1305. king.

  1306. That is wisdom.

  1307. That's profound.

  1308. Calling the

  1309. Old Testament

  1310. revelation old,

  1311. that's not

  1312. downplaying it.

  1313. It will be to

  1314. our poverty if we

  1315. neglect the old

  1316. treasure.

  1317. It helps us

  1318. understand Jesus.

  1319. Jesus is the

  1320. gospel.

  1321. So do you

  1322. hear the call of

  1323. this parable on

  1324. you?

  1325. If you're a

  1326. disciple of Jesus,

  1327. he's calling you to

  1328. join him in

  1329. building his

  1330. kingdom.

  1331. Bring out your

  1332. understanding of

  1333. his kingdom for

  1334. others to benefit.

  1335. He's calling you to

  1336. teach with your

  1337. words, with your

  1338. life.

  1339. If you don't

  1340. feel like you've

  1341. got much to

  1342. offer, on the

  1343. one hand, maybe

  1344. you do need to

  1345. sit more at his

  1346. feet, soaking up

  1347. the Old and New

  1348. Testament.

  1349. But on the other

  1350. hand, chances are,

  1351. if you've been

  1352. listening to this

  1353. sermon series, you've

  1354. got more than you

  1355. think you do.

  1356. All these

  1357. parables we've

  1358. heard in chapter

  1359. 13 give us rich

  1360. kingdom perspective

  1361. about the reality of

  1362. things.

  1363. They tell us.

  1364. If you've been

  1365. listening to the

  1366. guys who've been

  1367. preaching, you have

  1368. profound insight into

  1369. what God has done,

  1370. what he is doing,

  1371. what he will do.

  1372. The hidden kingdom

  1373. is seen and heard

  1374. through his church,

  1375. his disciples,

  1376. sharing the treasure

  1377. that we've learned.

  1378. And I think a sermon

1379. can only do so much.

1380. It can only do so

  1381. much.

  1382. We need those one-to-one

  1383. interactions after the

  1384. sermon, integrating what

  1385. we've learned into our

  1386. lives, over Bible study,

1387. going for a walk, when

  1388. people are sharing their

  1389. burdens.

  1390. I can't be everywhere.

1391. A sermon can only do so

  1392. much.

1393. We need all of us doing

  1394. this, engaged in this

  1395. work.

  1396. work.

  1397. And this work, I don't

  1398. think, this teaching is

  1399. not just for unbelievers.

1400. I think it's for all of us

1401. to go deeper and deeper

  1402. in our understanding.

  1403. These parables may not

1404. give you precise words to

1405. say, but they give you an

  1406. understanding of history of

  1407. what God is doing.

1408. It gives you guidance for

  1409. how to help people.

1410. So let me just suggest a

  1411. few ways.

1412. Let me paint a few

  1413. scenarios.

1414. When a brother or sister is

  1415. discouraged about how few

  1416. people believe, can it

1417. really be true if so few

  1418. believe?

1419. They need you to bring out

  1420. your treasure.

1421. Bring out the four soils.

  1422. You know what?

  1423. There's a reason for the

  1424. rejection of Jesus.

1425. There are huge barriers to

  1426. faith.

1427. You have Satan, the lies of

  1428. Satan.

  1429. You have the social

  1430. consequences of being a

  1431. Christian.

1432. You have the sinful desires

1433. of your wealth and other

  1434. things.

  1435. Yeah, there's a reason there's

  1436. so much rejection.

  1437. But don't be discouraged.

  1438. Don't lose heart.

1439. There's going to be an

  1440. abundant harvest.

  1441. Jesus' death conquers those

  1442. barriers.

  1443. And remember the mustard

  1444. seed.

  1445. The church looks pathetic.

  1446. It looks insignificant.

  1447. But it is growing.

1448. He is adding to his church.

1449. It may not be on our

  1450. doorstep, but across the

1451. world he is adding to his

  1452. church.

  1453. Don't lose heart.

1454. The word of God will

  1455. permeate the whole world

1456. until the whole dough is

  1457. leavened.

  1458. Don't be discouraged.

1459. It will be the only

1460. significant thing in the end.

1461. There will be a multitude.

1462. All the birds flocking to

  1463. this tree.

1464. There will be a multitude

  1465. from every nation

1466. worshipping on the last day.

  1467. Don't be discouraged.

1468. When a brother or sister shares their

  1469. temptation, their sinful failure,

1470. they need you to bring out your

  1471. treasure.

1472. Trust the word of God to be like

  1473. leaven in the dough.

1474. It may seem so small an influence in

1475. your life, but God's word will

1476. permeate every inch of you over time.

1477. Keep up the struggle with sin.

1478. Remember the weeds and the wheat.

  1479. This world is mixed.

1480. There are causes of evil.

1481. There's causes of sin in this world.

1482. And we might be going, God, why

1483. don't you just take them out?

1484. All he tells us is, I'm protecting

  1485. my wheat.

  1486. It's for my wheat's sake that I

  1487. don't.

1488. We don't understand fully why.

1489. But get the point there.

  1490. It's mixed.

1491. Your struggle with sin is normal.

  1492. It is normal.

  1493. But look up ahead.

  1494. The harvest is coming.

1495. And then you will shine like the

1496. sun with the character of Jesus in

  1497. your father's kingdom.

1498. Or when a brother or sister is

1499. getting obsessed with some created

1500. thing in their life, they need you

1501. to bring out your treasure.

1502. Remember what you found in Jesus.

1503. Full membership in his kingdom.

  1504. Full forgiveness.

1505. Salvation from the fiery furnace.

  1506. Reconciliation to the father.

1507. Only knowing his grace and help by

  1508. his spirit.

  1509. The hope of glory.

  1510. All found in Jesus.

  1511. What are you doing?

1512. Obsessing with this thing in your

  1513. life.

1514. Why do you have such a firm grip on

  1515. it?

1516. You have such a better treasure.

1517. Others around you need to see this

  1518. treasure in you.

  1519. Let it go.

  1520. Sell it all.

  1521. It won't be loss.

1522. It will be gain for you and others.

1523. Now you may not use those exact words

1524. but do you see how the parables just

1525. they give us what we need.

  1526. They give us perspective.

1527. So let's keep learning at the feet of

  1528. Jesus.

1529. Soaking up his old and new treasures.

1530. Your Lord calls you to join him in

  1531. building his kingdom.

1532. A kingdom this world despises because

  1533. it's hidden.

1534. But it's God's kingdom and it will

  1535. reach its glorious goal.

1536. It will pervade the whole world.

  1537. Every person.

  1538. Love.

1539. The love of Christ compels us to

  1540. bring out our treasure.

1541. That we've found in him.

1542. Because that great and terrible net is

  1543. coming.

1544. And because we need each other.

1545. To speak these truths in every

1546. situation again and again and again

1547. to stand firm and be fruitful and be

1548. ready to shine like the sun when Jesus

  1549. comes back.

1550. The love of Christ compels us to bring

  1551. out our treasure.

1552. Will you pray with me?

  1553. Let's pray.

1554. Father thank you for your mercy in giving us

  1555. eyes to see Jesus.

1556. That we might have full life in you.

1557. That we have started that eternal life now.

1558. And that we've got so much more to come.

1559. I thank you for your grace to us that you

1560. have revealed the secrets of the kingdom of

  1561. heaven.

1562. When we deserve to be cast out.

1563. You have had such grace.

1564. Lord please help us to share this treasure

  1565. with others.

  1566. For your glory.

  1567. For others good.

  1568. In Jesus name.

  1569. Amen.

  1570. Amen.

  1571. Amen.

  1572. Amen.

  1573. Amen.

  1574. Amen.

  1575. Amen.

  1576. Amen.

  1577. Amen.

  1578. Amen.

  1579. Amen.

  1580. Amen.
