  1. For this holiday, we are going through Psalm 1 to 3.

  2. I'll be doing Psalm 1 and 2.

  3. So Psalm 1 and 2 are the two foundational Psalms.

  4. If you understand Psalm 1 and 2,

  5. we will be able to help us understand the rest of the Psalms

  6. and also the whole Bible story, the storyline of the Bible.

  7. So this week, I will speak on Psalm 1.

  8. Psalm 1 tells us about blessedness and righteousness.

  9. Men seek blessedness.

  10. God seeks righteousness.

  11. So the title of this sermon is therefore,

  12. Blessedness Out of Righteousness.

  13. It's out of righteousness, not outside of righteousness.

  14. So next week, we will come to Psalm 2.

  15. Psalm 2 tells us about freedom and God's kingdom.

  16. Men want to establish their own freedom.

  17. God wants to establish his kingdom.

  18. So the title of this second sermon will be

  19. Freedom Out of Kingdom.

  20. Before we start, let's pray first.

  21. Almighty God, we are so thankful that we could have your words,

  22. that we are not living in darkness,

  23. and that we have hope that we could look forward to as well.

  24. May you guide us as we consider and meditate on your word this morning,

  25. that we, or that we think about,

  26. and all that we are going to do will be acceptable in your sight.

  27. For we pray in Jesus' name.

  28. Amen.

  29. Because there's no children's talk today,

  30. there are not many children anyway.

  31. So for the school children,

  32. I suppose you are enjoying your school holiday.

  33. I think for children,

  34. I mean, why is it so enjoyable about holiday?

  35. It would be because if you have parents who are caring for you,

  36. and you like to spend time at home,

  37. and that is the part that is enjoyable.

  38. And I would like to tell you about a little boy,

  39. whose name was Sihata.

  40. Sihata was born as a prince in Nepal.

  41. He was born about 500 years before Jesus came.

  42. Because he lived as a prince,

  43. he lived quite a comfortable life.

  44. He didn't know anything about suffering.

  45. He just thought that that's all about life.

  46. Until one day he grew old enough,

  47. and his parents allowed him to go outside of the palace.

  48. He went out and visited his people.

  49. And during that visit, it gave him a shock.

  50. Because he saw people hungry,

  51. people begging,

  52. people sick,

  53. and even people dying.

  54. And that upset him very much.

  55. And I suppose he's a special person.

  56. I mean, most people said this is life.

  57. But for him,

  58. he didn't think that life should be like this.

  59. He think that life should be like his time,

  60. like in his family.

  61. There's no suffering.

  62. So he was trying to figure out what's going on.

  63. I mean, what is life?

  64. Why was there suffering?

  65. And how could people live without suffering?

  66. So it upset him so much that he couldn't let this go.

  67. And one night,

  68. by that time he had already married,

  69. and he got even a small boy.

  70. But one night he just couldn't take it anymore.

  71. He left the palace.

  72. He went out.

  73. And he gave up all his comfort.

  74. He went out and lived with the people.

  75. And he traveled around,

  76. thinking about life.

  77. After many years,

  78. he came to a conclusion that,

  79. oh, why people suffer so much?

  80. It's because of cravings.

  81. Because people crave for things.

  82. He said,

  83. because you crave for things,

  84. you suffer.

  85. If you don't crave for anything,

  86. then you don't suffer.

  87. Like if we crave for love,

  88. then we can be cheated by someone

  89. who appears to offer you love,

  90. but actually trying to take advantage of you.

  91. You crave for money,

  92. and then we can lose all our wealth by gambling.

  93. So you crave for respect,

  94. why people,

  95. if people don't respect you,

  96. you get very angry,

  97. and sometimes you even kill somebody.

  98. And so we suffer for all those consequences.

  99. But what about people who are born in poverty,

  100. or born with effect?

  101. Then he said,

  102. that's because in your previous life,

  103. you did something bad.

  104. You crave for something,

  105. and you did something bad.

  106. And you didn't get the consequence that time,

  107. but you will get it in your next life.

  108. And so,

  109. Sihata has come to this conclusion,

  110. which is not too bad, actually,

  111. in terms of how to explain life.

  112. But he wants to end suffering, basically.

  113. He wants to,

  114. he sees people suffer.

  115. So he said that if you don't want to suffer,

  116. eventually you need to have no craving.

  117. And unless you,

  118. and this is,

  119. he called that this is a state of blessedness,

  120. when you can get there.

  121. But before you can,

  122. until you get there,

  123. you will keep reincarnating.

  124. So you die,

  125. you get birth.

  126. And so,

  127. you go through the pain of death,

  128. even if your life is not that,

  129. you don't suffer so much,

  130. but on the deathbed,

  131. you still suffer.

  132. Nobody likes to die.

  133. And so you keep dying,

  134. and dying,

  135. and dying,

  136. and dying,

  137. until,

  138. at some stage,

  139. you can get to the state,

  140. when you don't have any craving,

  141. then you don't die anymore.

  142. And during each reincarnation,

  143. you may either be demoted

  144. to an existence of more suffering,

  145. or promoted to an existence of less suffering.

  146. And to be promoted to a better state of existence,

  147. you need to accumulate

  148. or save sufficient good karma for your next life.

  149. So if you work hard enough,

  150. after thousands of reincarnations,

  151. you may be able to get to the state of blessedness,

  152. when you will be free from suffering.

  153. So Sihata started Buddhism,

  154. and his name became Gautama Buddha.

  155. So while Gautama Buddha's explanation of life

  156. makes some sense,

  157. his understanding is not complete,

  158. because he left God out of the picture.

  159. So before God is a reference point,

  160. Gautama Buddha thought that boys and girls,

  161. men and women,

  162. can be righteous if they try hard enough.

  163. Like all men make religions,

  164. the assumption is that

  165. man's outward performance of righteousness

  166. is sufficient to be considered

  167. making the passing mark for righteousness.

  168. And Jesus gave us a surprising answer about this.

  169. In Matthew 5.20,

  170. Jesus said,

  171. For I tell you,

  172. unless your righteousness exceeds

  173. that of the scribes and Pharisees,

  174. you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

  175. The scribes and Pharisees

  176. were the most righteous men ever lived.

  177. They were zealous for the law.

  178. They only wanted to do what God wanted them to do.

  179. But Jesus said,

  180. that is not enough.

  181. Why is that not enough?

  182. Just because they were doing it for themselves,

  183. and not for God.

  184. And those righteousness are outward righteousness.

  185. We will come back to that.

  186. And secondly,

  187. without God as the source point,

  188. Gautama Buddha thought that

  189. blessedness is the absence of suffering.

  190. He did not know God,

  191. so he didn't have the concept of God.

  192. He could only see things through his woe-ly eyes.

  193. He had no idea what God has prepared

  194. for those who loved him.

  195. So he left out an important part of life

  196. because he left God out of the picture.

  197. If Gautama Buddha had read Psalms 1 and 2

  198. and understood them,

  199. he would not have needed to waste his time

  200. trying to invent the will.

  201. In these two Psalms,

  202. God has revealed the reasons

  203. for our suffering

  204. and the way to blessedness and freedom.

  205. So Psalm 1 starts with,

  206. blessed is the man.

  207. Gautama Buddha was correct

  208. in thinking that the state of blessedness

  209. is the longing of humans.

  210. So even though he said

  211. that we shouldn't crave for anything,

  212. but he actually craved for blessedness.

  213. That is a paradox in itself.

  214. If a Buddhist somehow managed

  215. to achieve Buddhahood,

  216. then at least that

  217. he will not reincarnate again.

  218. He has achieved the enlightenment

  219. enlightenment

  220. to the state of having no more cravings

  221. and no more conscious of self.

  222. To a Buddhist,

  223. the state of blessedness

  224. is when he becomes nothing.

  225. Someone tells us that

  226. blessedness is about

  227. our relationship with God.

  228. It's not becoming nothing,

  229. but being filled with the greatness

  230. and goodness of God.

  231. Because of the blessed man's

  232. relationship with God,

  233. his cravings have also become holy.

  234. It does not crave for things

  235. like sinners do.

  236. Sinners are people

  237. who disregard God

  238. and live for themselves

  239. and do whatever is right

  240. in their eyes.

  241. Verse 1 tells us that

  242. the blessed man

  243. does not associate

  244. with the way of the sinners.

  245. Verse 1 tells us

  246. in what ways

  247. the blessed man

  248. does not associate

  249. with the sinners.

  250. So,

  251. there are

  252. the three ways

  253. I would like to think about.

  254. First,

  255. in his deeds,

  256. in his actions.

  257. Wicked men

  258. are those who walk

  259. according to their own will.

  260. They disregard God's will.

  261. They do what?

  262. Pleases them.

  263. And the most

  264. wicked action

  265. in the world

  266. would be

  267. for the Jews

  268. to put

  269. Jesus Christ

  270. on the cross,

  271. to put

  272. a righteous man

  273. on the cross.

  274. So,

  275. in his actions,

  276. in his thoughts,

  277. sinners

  278. naturally

  279. put themselves

  280. as their own kings.

  281. They think

  282. that they are

  283. entitled

  284. to admiration

  285. and comfort.

  286. They think

  287. that they deserve

  288. a better life,

  289. a comfort in life,

  290. and they think

  291. they can stand tall

  292. in any occasion.

  293. So,

  294. when

  295. Jesus challenged

  296. the Pharisees,

  297. they could not stand

  298. Jesus

  299. because

  300. they want to be

  301. in charge.

  302. And they,

  303. and so they have

  304. this thought

  305. of killing Jesus

  306. and Jesus has been

  307. challenging them.

  308. Why do you want

  309. to kill me?

  310. They just didn't

  311. think about

  312. these sinful thoughts

  313. in their minds.

  314. And so that is

  315. in actions

  316. and in thoughts

  317. and thirdly

  318. in his words.

  319. scoffers

  320. sit there.

  321. So,

  322. sitting there,

  323. a righteous man

  324. does not sit

  325. with the scoffers

  326. because the scoffers

  327. are those

  328. who sit there

  329. doing nothing

  330. and just

  331. give all the

  332. complaints,

  333. criticisms,

  334. comments

  335. about things.

  336. So,

  337. it's easy

  338. to scoff

  339. just like

  340. people

  341. who scoff

  342. at Jesus

  343. that you

  344. can save,

  345. you said

  346. you are the

  347. son of God,

  348. why don't you

  349. save yourself?

  350. come down

  351. from the cross

  352. and this is

  353. the scoffer.

  354. And so,

  355. the scoffer

  356. has the ability

  357. to tear down

  358. but they don't

  359. know how to

  360. build people

  361. up.

  362. So,

  363. I put a

  364. table there.

  365. So,

  366. Psalm 11

  367. is the way

  368. of the

  369. sinners

  370. that

  371. the righteous

  372. person

  373. will not

  374. associate with

  375. them

  376. in the way

  377. they think,

  378. they speak

  379. and they

  380. do things

  381. but

  382. the blessed

  383. man delights

  384. in the

  385. law of

  386. the Lord.

  387. In what

  388. way does

  389. he meditate

  390. on the

  391. law,

  392. God's

  393. law,

  394. all the

  395. time?

  396. And in

  397. what way

  398. does he

  399. meditate

  400. on the

  401. law of

  402. God?

  403. So,

  404. in

  405. column 2

  406. in the

  407. table,

  408. Psalm 1-2,

  409. the law,

  410. so,

  411. the righteous

  412. person is

  413. delight and

  414. meditate on

  415. the law.

  416. So,

  417. in his

  418. thoughts,

  419. thoughts is

  420. the

  421. commandment

  422. 1-2,

  423. that there's

  424. only

  425. one God,

  426. there's the

  427. only God,

  428. and also

  429. he would

  430. make no

  431. image

  432. about this

  433. God.

  434. He

  435. understands

  436. that God

  437. is above

  438. all creatures

  439. and he

  440. does not

  441. displace

  442. God with

  443. other

  444. things.

  445. And in

  446. his words,

  447. he speaks

  448. to honour

  449. God in

  450. all his

  451. words,

  452. that's

  453. commandment

  454. 3,

  455. he does

  456. not take

  457. God's

  458. name in

  459. vain,

  460. and his

  461. deeds,

  462. he sets

  463. aside time

  464. in regular

  465. interval to

  466. enjoy God's

  467. presence,

  468. that is

  469. commandment

  470. number 4.

  471. And also,

  472. in his

  473. relationship

  474. with people,

  475. in his

  476. thoughts,

  477. he honour

  478. his parents

  479. and respect

  480. other people,

  481. he does

  482. not cover

  483. their

  484. properties,

  485. that's

  486. commandment

  487. 5 and

  488. 10,

  489. and in

  490. his

  491. words,

  492. he does

  493. not

  494. deceive,

  495. depreciate,

  496. or despise

  497. others in

  498. his words,

  499. commandment

  500. number 9,

  501. and in

  502. his actions,

  503. his deeds,

  504. he does

  505. not damage,

  506. seduce,

  507. or defraud

  508. other people,

  509. that is

  510. commandment

  511. 6,

  512. 7,

  513. 8.

  514. So,

  515. just a summary

  516. for the

  517. Ten Commandments,

  518. but obviously

  519. there's more

  520. detailed

  521. explanation of

  522. the Ten

  523. Commandments

  524. in the

  525. Old Testament,

  526. but come to

  527. the New

  528. Testament,

  529. Jesus sums

  530. this up,

  531. he says

  532. that the

  533. righteous

  534. person

  535. loves the

  536. Lord,

  537. his God,

  538. before his

  539. heart,

  540. his being,

  541. and loves

  542. his labour

  543. as himself,

  544. and so the

  545. blessed man

  546. delights in

  547. loving God

  548. and loving

  549. his

  550. neighbours.

  551. others.

  552. So that's

  553. verse 1

  554. and 2.

  555. In verse 3,

  556. it says that

  557. the blessed

  558. man is like

  559. a tree

  560. planted by

  561. the streams

  562. of water

  563. and yields

  564. its fruit

  565. in its season.

  566. The sinner

  567. can only

  568. grab

  569. everything

  570. for their

  571. own comfort

  572. and survival.

  573. The blessed

  574. man produces

  575. fruit of life

  576. for the

  577. blessing of

  578. other people.

  579. Adam and

  580. Eve could

  581. have eaten

  582. the fruit

  583. from the

  584. tree of

  585. life.

  586. If they

  587. have done

  588. so,

  589. they will

  590. become

  591. trees of

  592. life to

  593. give life

  594. to their

  595. descendants.

  596. They choose

  597. to disobey

  598. God and

  599. eat from

  600. the tree

  601. of knowledge,

  602. the tree

  603. with the

  604. fruit of

  605. the knowledge

  606. of good

  607. and evil.

  608. Their

  609. disobedience

  610. did help

  611. them to

  612. know what

  613. is good

  614. and evil.

  615. So after

  616. they disobey

  617. God,

  618. they know

  619. that to

  620. obey God

  621. is good.

  622. to

  623. disobey

  624. God

  625. is evil.

  626. So

  627. disobedience

  628. led to

  629. God's

  630. judgment.

  631. They were

  632. cast out

  633. of God's

  634. garden.

  635. Their

  636. life became

  637. difficult as

  638. the land

  639. was cursed.

  640. Men

  641. suffer to

  642. find a

  643. living.

  644. Women

  645. suffer to

  646. produce

  647. offspring.

  648. Men and

  649. women suffer

  650. more in

  651. trying to

  652. fulfill their

  653. cravings.

  654. They know

  655. that they

  656. do,

  657. they need

  658. to put

  659. in a lot

  660. of effort

  661. to get

  662. very little

  663. return.

  664. But even

  665. in his

  666. judgment,

  667. God was

  668. merciful to

  669. us.

  670. The

  671. hardship in

  672. life is

  673. there to

  674. help us

  675. to seek

  676. God.

  677. The

  678. blessed man

  679. is already

  680. seeking God

  681. all the

  682. time.

  683. He does

  684. not need

  685. hardship to

  686. help him

  687. to seek

  688. God.

  689. In all

  690. that he

  691. does,

  692. he

  693. prospers.

  694. Prosperity

  695. here does

  696. not mean

  697. an easy

  698. life,

  699. but a

  700. fulfilling

  701. life.

  702. Jesus

  703. Christ

  704. came to

  705. do God's

  706. will.

  707. In all

  708. that he

  709. did,

  710. he

  711. prospered

  712. until he

  713. fulfilled his

  714. mission.

  715. verse 4,

  716. the wicked

  717. are not

  718. so.

  719. Despite all

  720. their efforts,

  721. they cannot

  722. achieve anything

  723. of substance.

  724. When they

  725. look back

  726. the years

  727. they have

  728. lived,

  729. they cannot

  730. find anything

  731. to cling

  732. on to.

  733. Their life

  734. is like

  735. calf,

  736. that the

  737. wind drives

  738. away.

  739. It's quite

  740. scary,

  741. isn't it?

  742. We can

  743. spend our

  744. whole life

  745. doing

  746. something,

  747. many things,

  748. and then

  749. at the

  750. end,

  751. it actually

  752. meant

  753. nothing.

  754. I hope

  755. that

  756. these words

  757. would

  758. strike us

  759. that we

  760. need to

  761. really

  762. be wise

  763. in terms

  764. of how

  765. we live

  766. and why

  767. we live

  768. for.

  769. So that

  770. in verse

  771. 5,

  772. in the

  773. day of

  774. judgment,

  775. we can

  776. stand

  777. before the

  778. judgment

  779. seats.

  780. In the

  781. day of

  782. judgment,

  783. those who

  784. stand in

  785. the way

  786. of sinners

  787. will not

  788. be able

  789. to stand

  790. before the

  791. judgment seat.

  792. They have

  793. nothing of

  794. glory and

  795. honor.

  796. Everything

  797. they have

  798. lived for

  799. has been

  800. borne away.

  801. Sinners

  802. cannot stand

  803. in the

  804. congregation

  805. of the

  806. righteous.

  807. They

  808. will not

  809. lie.

  810. Even if

  811. God opens

  812. the door

  813. and says,

  814. come in,

  815. but if

  816. you are

  817. not a

  818. righteous

  819. person,

  820. you

  821. won't

  822. find

  823. yourself

  824. at home

  825. in the

  826. congregation

  827. the

  828. righteous.

  829. You

  830. are just

  831. totally

  832. out of

  833. place.

  834. You

  835. don't

  836. know

  837. what

  838. they

  839. were

  840. talking

  841. about.

  842. But for

  843. those

  844. righteous

  845. who

  846. find

  847. themselves

  848. out of

  849. place

  850. among

  851. sinners

  852. in the

  853. world,

  854. they

  855. will

  856. find

  857. themselves

  858. at

  859. home

  860. at

  861. last.

  862. Verse

  863. 6,

  864. God

  865. knows

  866. the

  867. way

  868. of

  869. the

  870. righteous.

  871. He

  872. will

  873. make

  874. sure

  875. that

  876. these

  877. righteous

  878. would

  879. come

  880. home.

  881. So

  882. he

  883. knows

  884. their

  885. way

  886. like

  887. he

  888. knows

  889. the

  890. way

  891. to

  892. his

  893. children.

  894. He

  895. watches

  896. over

  897. them

  898. and

  899. leads

  900. them

  901. home.

  902. The

  903. way

  904. of

  905. the

  906. wicked

  907. is

  908. not

  909. so.

  910. The

  911. wicked

  912. runs

  913. away

  914. from

  915. God

  916. and

  917. runs

  918. towards

  919. destruction.

  920. Guatemala

  921. Buddha

  922. thought he

  923. could get

  924. to a

  925. state of

  926. blessedness

  927. by his

  928. own

  929. righteousness.

  930. We

  931. can

  932. define

  933. righteousness

  934. in

  935. whatever

  936. way

  937. you like.

  938. You

  939. can

  940. see

  941. that

  942. if

  943. different

  944. religions

  945. define

  946. righteousness

  947. in their

  948. own

  949. way.

  950. We

  951. can

  952. define

  953. righteousness

  954. in their

  955. own

  956. way.

  957. But

  958. if

  959. everybody

  960. defines

  961. righteousness

  962. in their

  963. own

  964. way,

  965. there's

  966. no

  967. righteousness.

  968. Just like

  969. if I

  970. define

  971. the length

  972. of one

  973. meter this

  974. way,

  975. the other

  976. one is

  977. that way,

  978. the other

  979. one is

  980. that way,

  981. then there's

  982. no standard

  983. and there's

  984. no righteousness.

  985. So

  986. there's only

  987. one real

  988. righteousness

  989. that would

  990. need to be

  991. defined by

  992. the creator.

  993. And

  994. also

  995. there's only

  996. one real

  997. blessing and

  998. that's only

  999. coming from

  1000. God as

  1001. well.

  1002. So we

  1003. need to

  1004. be right

  1005. with God

  1006. to know

  1007. what

  1008. blessedness

  1009. is.

  1010. Righteousness

  1011. is being

  1012. right with

  1013. God

  1014. primarily.

  1015. Being

  1016. right with

  1017. people is

  1018. only the

  1019. full-on

  1020. effect of

  1021. being right

  1022. with God.

  1023. The

  1024. Ten

  1025. Commandments

  1026. start with

  1027. the requirements

  1028. to be right

  1029. with God

  1030. the first

  1031. four.

  1032. So in

  1033. Luke,

    Luke 18:18

  1034. chapter 18

  1035. verse 18,

  1036. a rich

  1037. young ruler

  1038. asked Jesus

  1039. how he

  1040. could get

  1041. to the

  1042. state of

  1043. blessedness.

  1044. Jesus

  1045. asked if

  1046. he had

  1047. obeyed the

  1048. last six

  1049. commandments.

  1050. Yet he

  1051. was right

  1052. with man

  1053. in all

  1054. that he

  1055. did.

  1056. The ruler

  1057. said he

  1058. had.

  1059. Then Jesus

  1060. asked if

  1061. he would

  1062. give up

  1063. his wealth

  1064. and follow

  1065. him.

  1066. The ruler

  1067. went away

  1068. sad because

  1069. he loved

  1070. his wealth

  1071. more than

  1072. he loved

  1073. God.

  1074. He

  1075. actually

  1076. covered

  1077. his wealth

  1078. as well.

  1079. He

  1080. believed

  1081. that Jesus

  1082. came from

  1083. God and

  1084. that was

  1085. why he

  1086. asked Jesus

  1087. this question

  1088. and he

  1089. kneeled

  1090. before him.

  1091. Jesus

  1092. revealed to

  1093. him that

  1094. all his

  1095. good works

  1096. were done

  1097. for his

  1098. own glory.

  1099. He was

  1100. not living

  1101. for God,

  1102. he was

  1103. living for

  1104. himself.

  1105. Buddhism

  1106. is the

  1107. way to

  1108. become

  1109. Buddha.

  1110. All the

  1111. genuine

  1112. Buddhists

  1113. worked very

  1114. hard to

  1115. accumulate

  1116. enough

  1117. karma to

  1118. achieve the

  1119. state of

  1120. blessedness

  1121. through

  1122. Buddhahood.

  1123. It is

  1124. like a

  1125. game of

  1126. slates and

  1127. ladders.

  1128. There is

  1129. no certainty

  1130. that you

  1131. can get

  1132. there.

  1133. More

  1134. importantly,

  1135. even if

  1136. you get

  1137. to

  1138. Buddhahood,

  1139. would the

  1140. absence of

  1141. craving

  1142. himself

  1143. really be

  1144. the same

  1145. as a

  1146. state of

  1147. blessedness?

  1148. Christianity

  1149. is not

  1150. the way

  1151. to become

  1152. Christ.

  1153. There is

  1154. only one

  1155. Christ,

  1156. Jesus Christ.

  1157. there is

  1158. only one

  1159. righteous

  1160. man,

  1161. that is

  1162. Jesus

  1163. Christ.

  1164. Jesus

  1165. Christ is

  1166. the only

  1167. man who

  1168. gains

  1169. favor from

  1170. God

  1171. because of

  1172. his

  1173. righteousness.

  1174. The rest

  1175. of us

  1176. can only

  1177. gain favor

  1178. from God

  1179. because of

  1180. God's

  1181. mercy

  1182. through the

  1183. righteousness

  1184. of Jesus

  1185. Christ.

  1186. Someone

  1187. gives us

  1188. a picture

  1189. of the

  1190. blessed

  1191. man.

  1192. He loves

  1193. God and

  1194. delights in

  1195. God's

  1196. words.

  1197. Because his

  1198. delight is

  1199. in God,

  1200. the world

  1201. cannot tempt

  1202. him away

  1203. from God.

  1204. Woe

  1205. pleasure,

  1206. fame,

  1207. and comfort

  1208. have no

  1209. effect on

  1210. him.

  1211. God

  1212. watches over

  1213. his way.

  1214. The Holy

  1215. Spirit,

  1216. like streams

  1217. of water,

  1218. sustains

  1219. him.

  1220. He

  1221. produces

  1222. fruit of

  1223. life so

  1224. that others

  1225. may be

  1226. blessed as

  1227. well.

  1228. A blessed

  1229. man is

  1230. not one

  1231. who has

  1232. no cravings

  1233. or feelings.

  1234. He is

  1235. one whose

  1236. cravings

  1237. have been

  1238. filled to

  1239. overflow by

  1240. God's

  1241. greatness.

  1242. And he

  1243. is one

  1244. whose

  1245. feelings

  1246. have been

  1247. overwhelmed

  1248. by God's

  1249. goodness.

  1250. Psalm 14

  1251. tells us

  1252. that all

  1253. men have

  1254. turned away

  1255. from God.

  1256. There was

  1257. none who

  1258. does good,

  1259. not even

  1260. one.

  1261. The

  1262. descendants

  1263. of Adam

  1264. were hopeless

  1265. until Jesus

  1266. Christ

  1267. appeared.

  1268. From

  1269. childhood,

  1270. Jesus grew

  1271. in favor

  1272. with God

  1273. and man,

  1274. as in

  1275. Luke 2,

    Luke 2:52

  1276. verse 52.

  1277. Why did

  1278. Jesus need

  1279. to grow

  1280. in favor

  1281. with God?

  1282. Isn't

  1283. he the

  1284. son of

  1285. God?

  1286. Yes,

  1287. he's the

  1288. son of

  1289. God,

  1290. but he's

  1291. also came

  1292. as the

  1293. son of

  1294. man.

  1295. He lived

  1296. out a

  1297. life of

  1298. obedience

  1299. to God

  1300. as a

  1301. righteous

  1302. man

  1303. supposed

  1304. to.

  1305. In

  1306. Hebrews 5,

    Hebrews 5:8

  1307. verses 8 and

  1308. 10,

  1309. it says

  1310. that although

  1311. he was

  1312. a son,

  1313. he learned

  1314. obedience

  1315. through what

  1316. he suffered

  1317. and being

  1318. made perfect,

  1319. he became

  1320. the source

  1321. of eternal

  1322. salvation to

  1323. all who

  1324. obey him,

  1325. being

  1326. designated

  1327. by God

  1328. a high

  1329. priest after

  1330. the order

  1331. of Melchizedek.

  1332. We thank

  1333. God that

  1334. Jesus lived

  1335. out a

  1336. righteous

  1337. life in

  1338. his suffering.

  1339. Because he's

  1340. the righteous

  1341. man, we

  1342. can now

  1343. also become

  1344. righteous

  1345. men and

  1346. women in

  1347. Jesus.

  1348. Because he

  1349. had gained

  1350. God's favor,

  1351. we become

  1352. acceptable to

  1353. God through

  1354. Jesus Christ.

  1355. He became

  1356. the source

  1357. of eternal

  1358. blessedness to

  1359. all who

  1360. obey him.

  1361. How do we

  1362. obey him?

  1363. He said,

  1364. I am the

  1365. bread of

  1366. life.

  1367. Whoever

  1368. comes to

  1369. me shall

  1370. not hunger.

  1371. Whoever

  1372. believes in

  1373. me shall

  1374. never thirst.

  1375. In

  1376. John 6,

  1377. 36.

  1378. If anyone

  1379. thirsts,

  1380. let him

  1381. come to

  1382. me and

  1383. drink.

  1384. Whoever

  1385. believes in

  1386. me, as

  1387. the scripture

  1388. has said,

  1389. out of his

  1390. heart will

  1391. flow rivers

  1392. of living

  1393. water.

  1394. John 7,

  1395. 37,

  1396. 38.

  1397. I am the

  1398. light of the

  1399. world.

  1400. whoever

  1401. follows me

  1402. will not

  1403. walk in

  1404. darkness,

  1405. but will

  1406. have the

  1407. light,

  1408. the light

  1409. of life.

  1410. John 8,

  1411. 12.

  1412. To come to

  1413. Jesus,

  1414. we must

  1415. first know

  1416. that we

  1417. are deficient,

  1418. defective,

  1419. and deceitful.

  1420. We must

  1421. admit that

  1422. we live in

  1423. darkness.

  1424. We must be

  1425. hungry and

  1426. thirsty for

  1427. righteousness

  1428. and light.

  1429. when we

  1430. can let

  1431. go of

  1432. our

  1433. self-importance,

  1434. then we

  1435. can hear

  1436. his call

  1437. and come

  1438. to him.

  1439. Guatemala

  1440. Buddha was

  1441. correct in

  1442. thinking that

  1443. becoming

  1444. nothing was

  1445. the way to

  1446. blessedness.

  1447. He was

  1448. halfway there,

  1449. but he

  1450. could not

  1451. see beyond

  1452. nothingness.

  1453. Being

  1454. nothing is

  1455. not the

  1456. end of

  1457. our

  1458. incarnation of

  1459. earthly life,

  1460. but being

  1461. nothing is the

  1462. beginning of

  1463. a new

  1464. life.

  1465. When God

  1466. blesses us,

  1467. he will

  1468. first empty

  1469. us.

  1470. He will

  1471. empty us

  1472. of our

  1473. boasting

  1474. and pride.

  1475. He will

  1476. empty us

  1477. of ourselves.

  1478. But he

  1479. does not

  1480. leave us

  1481. there.

  1482. He will

  1483. fill us

  1484. with himself.

  1485. God's

  1486. blessing

  1487. satisfies

  1488. our deepest

  1489. longings.

  1490. We do

  1491. not need

  1492. to follow

  1493. the ways

  1494. of the

  1495. sinners

  1496. to try

  1497. to gain

  1498. satisfaction.

  1499. In fact,

  1500. we can

  1501. be so

  1502. filled by

  1503. God's

  1504. blessing

  1505. that we

  1506. want to

  1507. be a

  1508. blessing

  1509. to others.

  1510. Matthew

  1511. 5,

  1512. 11.

  1513. Blessed

  1514. are you

  1515. when others

  1516. revile you

  1517. and persecute

  1518. you and

  1519. utter all

  1520. kinds of

  1521. evil against

  1522. you falsely

  1523. on my

  1524. account.

  1525. The change

  1526. brought about

  1527. by Jesus'

  1528. redemptive

  1529. work on

  1530. the cross

  1531. is so

  1532. drastic

  1533. that our

  1534. own comfort

  1535. is no

  1536. longer the

  1537. focus of

  1538. our life.

  1539. The love

  1540. of God

  1541. constrains us

  1542. not to

  1543. avoid the

  1544. wicked,

  1545. the sinner,

  1546. the scoffers,

  1547. but to live

  1548. among them

  1549. and serve

  1550. them.

  1551. The grace

  1552. of God

  1553. sustenance

  1554. that we

  1555. do not

  1556. fear

  1557. suffering

  1558. anymore,

  1559. but we

  1560. become

  1561. willing to

  1562. suffer for

  1563. righteousness'

  1564. sake.

  1565. God

  1566. seeks

  1567. righteousness

  1568. and we

  1569. seek

  1570. blessedness.

  1571. There is

  1572. no

  1573. blessedness

  1574. without

  1575. righteousness.

  1576. We do

  1577. not have

  1578. righteousness.

  1579. All we

  1580. have is

  1581. rebellious

  1582. nature that

  1583. deserves

  1584. God's

  1585. judgment.

  1586. God

  1587. has

  1588. placed

  1589. the cross

  1590. in between

  1591. what he

  1592. seeks and

  1593. what we

  1594. seek.

  1595. On the

  1596. cross,

  1597. Jesus has

  1598. become our

  1599. righteousness.

  1600. In Christ,

  1601. we can now

  1602. become the

  1603. righteous man

  1604. who enjoys

  1605. God's blessing

  1606. freely and

  1607. joyfully.

  1608. And this

  1609. is the only

  1610. beginning.

  1611. Guatemala

  1612. Buddha had

  1613. no idea

  1614. what God

  1615. has prepared

  1616. for those

  1617. who loved

  1618. him because

  1619. Guatemala

  1620. Buddha did

  1621. not know

  1622. God.

  1623. If you

  1624. know God,

  1625. you will

  1626. also have

  1627. no idea

  1628. what God

  1629. has prepared

  1630. for those

  1631. who love

  1632. him because

  1633. God's

  1634. grace and

  1635. glory is

  1636. so rich

  1637. that every

  1638. day of our

  1639. life,

  1640. only in the

  1641. beginning,

  1642. we can never

  1643. know the

  1644. extent of

  1645. blessedness

  1646. that we

  1647. have in

  1648. Christ.

  1649. And I

  1650. hope that

  1651. the love

  1652. of Christ

  1653. will

  1654. constrain

  1655. us to

  1656. love God

  1657. more each

  1658. day.

  1659. And enjoy

  1660. his presence

  1661. and his

  1662. work in

  1663. our life.

  1664. Okay,

  1665. let us

  1666. pray.

  1667. Father,

  1668. we used

  1669. to think

  1670. that being

  1671. righteous is

  1672. such a

  1673. painful

  1674. life

  1675. that we

  1676. need to

  1677. sacrifice

  1678. many things.

  1679. We need

  1680. to avoid

  1681. all the

  1682. joy in

  1683. life.

  1684. And we

  1685. thank you

  1686. for your

  1687. mercy that

  1688. you have

  1689. called us

  1690. and showed

  1691. us the

  1692. glory of

  1693. the Lord

  1694. Jesus Christ

  1695. that we

  1696. might now

  1697. know

  1698. that

  1699. what a

  1700. joy that

  1701. we have

  1702. not

  1703. experienced

  1704. because

  1705. we

  1706. were

  1707. afraid to

  1708. be

  1709. righteous.

  1710. Lord,

  1711. we

  1712. want to

  1713. get

  1714. closer to

  1715. you

  1716. and to

  1717. enjoy

  1718. your

  1719. presence

  1720. with us

  1721. and to

  1722. see life

  1723. as you

  1724. see

  1725. and to

  1726. even

  1727. more so

  1728. to wait

  1729. for the

  1730. day

  1731. when we

  1732. shall see

  1733. you face

  1734. to face.

  1735. Thank you,

  1736. Lord.

  1737. We pray in

  1738. Jesus' name.

  1739. Amen.
