  1. We're going to read today's Bible passage now from Colossians chapter 2, starting at verse 6 and through to verse 23 at the end of the chapter.

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  2. So starting at Colossians chapter 2, verse 6.

    Colossians 2:6

  3. Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

  4. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit according to the human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

  5. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been fulfilled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.

  6. In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.

  7. And you who were dead in the trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by cancelling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands.

  8. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

  9. He disarmed the rulers and authorities, and put them to open shame by triumphing over them in him.

  10. Therefore, let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath.

  11. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.

  12. Let no one disqualify you insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, and not holding fast to the head from which the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.

  13. If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations?

  14. Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch, referring to things that all perish as they are used, according to human precepts and teachings.

  15. These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they have no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

  16. Well, good morning, everyone.

  17. Question to get you thinking this morning.

  18. Is Australian culture, do you think, less religious, less spiritually shaped than it was, say, 50 or 100 years ago?

  19. Is it more anti-Christian?

  20. Now, I suspect, seeing the responses of some of you, you might be thinking to yourself, is he serious?

  21. Of course it's much less religious.

  22. Not only is it less religious, but it's aggressively anti-religious and specifically anti-Christian.

  23. And you can understand that because hardly a day passes without hearing on the news or on papers or wherever you get your news feeds from.

  24. Hardly a day passes without somebody claiming that religion is always the problem.

  25. It's never the solution.

  26. It's a bit of a catch cry almost.

  27. A go-to position for so many so quickly.

  28. Well, you know, in spite of all that, I would argue that the cultural air we breathe in Australia is more religious than it's been in the past.

  29. It's more spiritually shaped than it has ever been, I would argue.

  30. And that's true even as it increasingly and aggressively rejects historic Bible-based Christianity.

  31. So, Christianity is on the nose.

  32. Bible-based Christianity is on the nose.

  33. But that doesn't make us any less religious as a nation.

  34. In fact, I think we're more religious.

  35. So, a little bit, if you come with me in a little bit of a word study.

  36. The word religion comes from the Latin word re-ligari.

  37. It's printed in your outline there, if you can't pick up my accent.

  38. And the word re-ligari means to rebind, to tie back together something that's become disconnected, separated.

  39. And the reason why you re-ligari is so it becomes complete and healthy again.

  40. It restores well-being.

  41. And in the middle of that word re-ligari is the word that we get the word ligament from.

  42. A ligament is a strong sinew that holds bonds together to give our skeletons structure and integrity.

  43. So, religion, therefore, is a person's search for reconnection into our universe in a way that's meaningful.

  44. It gives purpose, meaning.

  45. It gives ultimate well-being.

  46. And it gives completeness as a person.

  47. So, using that definition of religion, hopefully you're starting to think,

  48. Oh, actually, I can see that now.

  49. People are very religious.

  50. That's very much a front of mind task for people.

  51. Most commonly, it's a search to connect the human and the divine.

  52. So that a person can die without fear of being rejected by God.

  53. But it's not always like that.

  54. Some people refuse to admit or even countenance the idea of a supreme being that we would call God.

  55. But even they create their own form of religion.

  56. Because they also are on the search for meaning and purpose and well-being and completeness.

  57. They might reject any notion of a supreme being, but they're going to create their own form of religion.

  58. And that religion might well be a passion for science.

  59. That's where I find my meaning and purpose and well-being.

  60. Or it might be shopping.

  61. You can see all around Australia today, people are in the temples worshipping with a passion.

  62. The shopping centres.

  63. It could be travel.

  64. It could be sex.

  65. It could be volunteering.

  66. It could be animal and human rights causes.

  67. It could be social media, self-promotion, so you make yourself your God and worship yourself.

  68. Or it could be a thousand other things.

  69. But they're all religions in the sense that people are passionately committed to them and engaged in them

  70. because they hope that those things will deliver meaning and purpose and a sense of well-being and completeness in life.

  71. But many still, of course, look to supernatural beings.

  72. They might reject the God of the Bible, but they still look to a host of supernatural beings.

  73. Some of them are just fanciful.

  74. But people want a beating heart at the centre of our universe.

  75. They don't want just a mechanistic world, the world of science.

  76. They want something warm, relational.

  77. And so they reject the God of the Bible, but they're still looking for some sort of supreme being out there that they can relate to.

  78. And, of course, that's how long is a piece of string once you start to go down that rabbit hole.

  79. But whatever form it takes, I would also suggest this.

  80. That at a practical level, self-made religion is like a bucket full of holes.

  81. It leaks.

  82. And it constantly needs to be topped up.

  83. And I think that describes and explains why our society is so restless, so discontent,

  84. so constantly focused and absorbed and expending our energy in the new experience.

  85. That thing that's going to be better and better replaces that which has been in the past.

  86. People always looking and needing for a top-up, some new expression, some new affirmation of meaning and purpose.

  87. Because the bucket we put our hopes in leaks.

  88. And leaks badly.

  89. And into this smorgasbord or buffy approach to life where people grab a bit of this and a bit of that in the search for completeness or authenticity,

  90. finding true self, whatever that is,

  91. into that we see in sharp contrast to it,

  92. God's gospel message.

  93. Which is

  94. that Jesus

  95. is the person

  96. every person is looking for.

  97. Jesus

  98. is the ligament

  99. which connects us back into relationship with God

  100. and delivers the meaning and purpose and the well-being and the completeness

  101. that we're all searching for

  102. in one form or another.

  103. But I need to add quickly here,

  104. the gospel is not another religion.

  105. That's the uniqueness of the gospel.

  106. It's not about what people do for God

  107. or to try and allay our fear for God by things we do.

  108. No, the gospel is about what God does for us.

  109. It's the total opposite of religion.

  110. It's about what God has done for me

  111. and continues to do in me

  112. through Jesus.

  113. And the gospel says,

  114. and we'll see it now as we jump into Colossians,

  115. the gospel said that

  116. God in Jesus has done everything

  117. needed for me and you

  118. and anybody else in this world

  119. to reconnect

  120. to God perfectly

  121. and forever.

  122. The gospel of Jesus, therefore,

  123. is a full bucket

  124. full to the brim

  125. with no leaks,

  126. no holes.

  127. We respond simply by living

  128. in the light of his promise and grace.

  129. And that's what Paul wants

  130. these believers at Colossae

  131. to understand.

  132. And so throughout his letter,

  133. and we're well into it now,

  134. throughout his letter,

  135. he's just saying this one thing

  136. over and over again.

  137. I've used the illustration of a diamond

  138. with all the facets in a diamond.

  139. There's one gospel diamond

  140. Paul wants us to understand.

  141. But as he goes through,

  142. his repetition isn't complete.

  143. He just turns the diamond

  144. each time he goes through the cycle

  145. and another facet of the gospel

  146. shines and glitters and strikes us.

  147. And we see the same

  148. as we jump into verse 6 of chapter 2

  149. where Paul says,

  150. therefore,

  151. so that's a summary

  152. based on what I've already said,

  153. says Paul.

  154. Therefore,

  155. as you received Christ Jesus the Lord,

  156. so walk in him

  157. or so live in him.

  158. Now,

  159. we've seen this pattern right through.

  160. Paul starts with

  161. what is already true

  162. based on the past,

  163. what God has already done

  164. for them in Christ.

  165. And on the basis of that,

  166. then he says,

  167. this is what it means

  168. for now and for the future,

  169. for how you live.

  170. Their walk

  171. or their daily lifestyle

  172. now and into the future,

  173. says Paul,

  174. ought to be in total sync

  175. with the beginnings

  176. of your spiritual walk,

  177. your spiritual life.

  178. When you became a believer

  179. in Jesus,

  180. that very,

  181. the very same things

  182. that are important then

  183. ought now

  184. to be the things

  185. that are important

  186. in your daily life.

  187. It was grace

  188. and faith

  189. back then,

  190. grace and faith

  191. now

  192. and into the future.

  193. Taking God

  194. at his word

  195. back then,

  196. believing as promises

  197. of forgiveness

  198. and renewal

  199. from the inside out.

  200. That's how you became

  201. a Christian.

  202. That's what it is

  203. to live as a Christian.

  204. And verse 7,

  205. Paul uses two metaphors

  206. or two picture words

  207. to make us point powerfully.

  208. The first one is

  209. rooted in Christ.

  210. It's an agricultural picture.

  211. In other words,

  212. in the past,

  213. says Paul,

  214. by God's grace

  215. and through Jesus' death

  216. and resurrection,

  217. you were organically

  218. joined to Jesus

  219. as inseparably

  220. as roots are

  221. to a tree.

  222. The secret of thriving now

  223. is knowing

  224. that you're rooted

  225. in Jesus

  226. and he is the source

  227. of life

  228. and vitality.

  229. And then the second metaphor

  230. is built up in him.

  231. It's a construction metaphor.

  232. In the past,

  233. Jesus became

  234. the foundation.

  235. When they became Christians,

  236. Jesus became

  237. their foundation

  238. upon which

  239. they now rest

  240. and the superstructure,

  241. which is the house,

  242. is emerging,

  243. is building

  244. and growing.

  245. And of course,

  246. we know

  247. that the shape

  248. of the foundations

  249. ultimately shape

  250. and define

  251. the building

  252. that grows on them

  253. or is put on them.

  254. And then Paul

  255. goes on and says,

  256. established in the faith

  257. just as you were taught.

  258. Again,

  259. he's pulling those

  260. two picture words

  261. together

  262. and he's saying,

  263. look,

  264. everything you are

  265. as a believer,

  266. everything you are

  267. as a believer

  268. was actually settled

  269. in the past

  270. when you became

  271. a believer.

  272. when you first

  273. heard and responded

  274. to the truth

  275. of the gospel

  276. and remember

  277. back in chapter 1,

  278. that truth

  279. was presented to them

  280. by Epaphras

  281. and Paul's now

  282. affirming

  283. and standing

  284. alongside Epaphras

  285. and said,

  286. yeah,

  287. there only is one

  288. gospel truth.

  289. Epaphras told you,

  290. I'm telling you again.

  291. and that includes

  292. both the unseen

  293. spiritual realities

  294. of being organically

  295. connected to Christ

  296. and the visible

  297. practical outworking

  298. of that reality

  299. in this daily life

  300. as the building

  301. emerges and grows.

  302. Everything

  303. is in Jesus.

  304. All of God's grace,

  305. all of God's renewing

  306. power to them

  307. in Jesus,

  308. prompted them,

  309. the last verse 7,

  310. to abound

  311. or the word

  312. is overflow.

  313. Same idea.

  314. Well, the word's abound

  315. but the picture

  316. is overflow, sorry.

  317. It just,

  318. when you grasp this,

  319. says Paul,

  320. you yourselves

  321. know the response.

  322. You just overflow

  323. with thanksgiving.

  324. You recognize

  325. you're enjoying

  326. the fullness

  327. or the completeness

  328. which is yours

  329. in and through Jesus.

  330. Your saviour

  331. and your lord

  332. and thanks

  333. and thanksgiving

  334. is just the natural response.

  335. God has done it for you.

  336. You've received it

  337. as a gift.

  338. Wow.

  339. So Jesus was

  340. their complete saviour.

  341. So they can now say,

  342. our reality

  343. as believers

  344. is that we are

  345. in Christ.

  346. His work for them

  347. in his death

  348. and resurrection

  349. was totally sufficient.

  350. Totally sufficient

  351. as we've seen

  352. in past weeks

  353. to transfer them

  354. from the domain

  355. of darkness

  356. into the kingdom

  357. of his light,

  358. of his son

  359. in light and life.

  360. To qualify them now

  361. to have an inheritance

  362. with Christ

  363. in heaven.

  364. That's how sufficient

  365. the work of Jesus was.

  366. Totally sufficient

  367. for everything they need

  368. to be back

  369. in perfect

  370. forever relationship

  371. with God.

  372. He was their

  373. complete saviour.

  374. But also,

  375. going back to chapter 1,

  376. he was their absolute lord.

  377. So that they could say

  378. as we saw last week,

  379. not only am I in Christ,

  380. but Christ is in me.

  381. In other words,

  382. Jesus has taken up

  383. residence

  384. in his renewed people.

  385. Marie demonstrated

  386. it wonderfully there

  387. with colour and water

  388. this morning.

  389. Jesus has taken up

  390. residence

  391. in his renewed people

  392. through his Holy Spirit

  393. so that his saved people

  394. are forever united

  395. with Christ.

  396. And that union

  397. with Christ

  398. is so complete

  399. that as we saw

  400. in past weeks,

  401. God now views us

  402. as being like Christ

  403. and promises

  404. that when we finally

  405. get to be home

  406. with Christ,

  407. we will be

  408. completely like Christ

  409. and free from

  410. every vestige of sin.

  411. Now,

  412. I just want to pause

  413. there for a moment

  414. because those two things

  415. have to go together.

  416. If we said

  417. that Christ's death

  418. was sufficient

  419. for everything we needed,

  420. but wasn't applied

  421. to us

  422. and guaranteed to us

  423. by union with Christ,

  424. then the sufficiency

  425. of Christ

  426. would not give us

  427. any great comfort

  428. or security.

  429. We need them both.

  430. If, on the other hand,

  431. we said,

  432. well,

  433. we've got union

  434. with Christ,

  435. but then there's

  436. a question over

  437. how sufficient

  438. and how complete

  439. Christ's death

  440. was to deal with sin

  441. and restore us

  442. to a relationship

  443. with God,

  444. then there would also

  445. be uncertainty for us.

  446. But you see,

  447. we've got both.

  448. We're united with Christ

  449. whose death

  450. was totally sufficient

  451. for us,

  452. Saviour and Lord,

  453. the complete package

  454. or fullness in him,

  455. as the verses

  456. 9 and 10 say.

  457. Paul's emphasis

  458. could not be stronger.

  459. And the practical

  460. outworking of that

  461. is,

  462. as you began,

  463. as you have begun

  464. your new life

  465. in Jesus

  466. in the past,

  467. so you're to continue

  468. to grow in Jesus.

  469. You began with Jesus,

  470. grace and faith.

  471. You continue with Jesus,

  472. grace and faith.

  473. Now,

  474. as believers,

  475. I think we're often

  476. guilty of focusing

  477. more on becoming

  478. a Christian,

  479. focusing on Jesus

  480. as Saviour

  481. rather than on

  482. continuing

  483. in Christ,

  484. demonstrating

  485. Jesus as Lord.

  486. I think we actually,

  487. for various reasons,

  488. which I don't have time

  489. to get into this morning,

  490. we actually might like

  491. the notion of Saviour

  492. because of what it offers us

  493. more than the concept

  494. of Lord,

  495. which demands of us.

  496. But the two are inseparable.

  497. Paul won't allow

  498. a separation.

  499. Becoming a believer,

  500. complete Saviour,

  501. is not the end of the road,

  502. it's just the start

  503. of the road

  504. of living under

  505. the absolute Lord.

  506. And that leads us

  507. into the second question.

  508. Each week in this series

  509. we've been repeating

  510. a question,

  511. a second question.

  512. What prevents us

  513. from experiencing

  514. fullness

  515. fullness

  516. or completeness

  517. in Christ?

  518. Well, each week

  519. we've seen

  520. the answer is actually

  521. relatively simple

  522. to understand.

  523. A bit more tricky

  524. to apply in our lives,

  525. but simple to understand.

  526. Given what Paul said

  527. in 6 and 7,

  528. the answer has to be

  529. not living,

  530. what prevents us

  531. from experiencing

  532. fullness?

  533. Well,

  534. not living

  535. in the light of

  536. who we are

  537. in Jesus.

  538. not utilizing

  539. the resources

  540. which are already ours

  541. by virtue of

  542. being in Christ

  543. and Christ

  544. in us.

  545. But positively,

  546. the life of faith

  547. is staying

  548. totally focused

  549. on Jesus

  550. for our fullness

  551. and completeness.

  552. in other words,

  553. keeping clear

  554. in our mind

  555. that the bucket

  556. we have,

  557. the gospel bucket

  558. of Jesus

  559. is full to the brim

  560. and doesn't leak.

  561. we don't need

  562. to add something

  563. to Jesus.

  564. We don't need

  565. to wander off

  566. down some other path

  567. which seems to be

  568. the case in Colossae

  569. where there was

  570. some group saying,

  571. well look,

  572. no you need a new

  573. and better experience.

  574. Well Jesus was great

  575. to start with,

  576. but somehow

  577. you need to move

  578. beyond that

  579. to a deeper

  580. experience,

  581. perhaps a separate

  582. experience,

  583. a second experience.

  584. Paul says,

  585. no,

  586. your bucket's

  587. already full.

  588. And here's

  589. the problem we see.

  590. If

  591. with this picture language

  592. the bucket's

  593. already full

  594. because of what

  595. Jesus has done

  596. for us

  597. and is doing

  598. in us,

  599. then as we try

  600. to add something

  601. to that bucket

  602. we actually

  603. displace

  604. something that's

  605. already in it.

  606. So if we try

  607. and add something

  608. to the gospel

  609. bucket of what

  610. Jesus has done

  611. for us

  612. and continues

  613. to do in us,

  614. then we're actually

  615. displacing some

  616. aspect of what

  617. Jesus has already

  618. done or is doing

  619. in us,

  620. which is essentially

  621. to trash the gospel.

  622. Diminish God's

  623. gospel.

  624. And Paul warned

  625. against this in

  626. verses 8 through

  627. 23.

  628. And a lot of

  629. this is illustrative,

  630. so I'm going to

  631. cover it very,

  632. very quick.

  633. Well,

  634. do I do anything

  635. very quickly,

  636. you say.

  637. I'm going to try

  638. and cover it as

  639. quickly as I can.

  640. As we've said

  641. over the last few

  642. weeks,

  643. as Christians,

  644. I've said that to

  645. myself more recently.

  646. I have to keep

  647. remembering to preach

  648. the gospel to myself

  649. because I forget it.

  650. I forget the basics.

  651. How quickly do I

  652. forget the basics

  653. and how extremely

  654. do I forget the

  655. basics?

  656. And that's what

  657. Paul's doing in

  658. these verses 8

  659. through to 23.

  660. So I'm turning

  661. into a couple of

  662. questions.

  663. 8 through to 15.

  664. Who captivates

  665. your walk

  666. or your life?

  667. If you look at

  668. verse 8,

  669. Paul says,

  670. say to it that

  671. no one takes you

  672. captive by philosophy

  673. and empty deceit

  674. according to human

  675. tradition,

  676. according to the

  677. elemental spirits

  678. of the world

  679. and not

  680. according to

  681. Christ.

  682. Whose pathway

  683. are you walking?

  684. Paul gives us

  685. only two options

  686. here.

  687. Either you're

  688. walking in the

  689. light of who you

  690. already are in

  691. Christ,

  692. filled to the

  693. brim,

  694. totally filled,

  695. satisfied and

  696. focused on Jesus'

  697. promises,

  698. or you're

  699. cutting your own

  700. pathway according

  701. to tradition and

  702. the things of the

  703. world.

  704. Pretty stark

  705. options,

  706. aren't they?

  707. either we're

  708. wandering along,

  709. trusting our own

  710. wisdom,

  711. and of course,

  712. if you've done

  713. any bushwalking,

  714. Alice and I,

  715. even when we were

  716. last holidays,

  717. we were chatting

  718. away and we were

  719. walking and suddenly

  720. I realized we were

  721. following an animal

  722. track.

  723. It wasn't a form

  724. track at all.

  725. We were just

  726. wandering,

  727. trusting Alison's

  728. wisdom.

  729. And I suddenly

  730. realized she'd got

  731. me lost,

  732. even though I was

  733. in front.

  734. You can do that

  735. when you're Irish.

  736. It's follow me,

  737. I'll be right behind

  738. you.

  739. That works when

  740. you're Irish.

  741. You just get more

  742. and more lost,

  743. and when you're

  744. wandering,

  745. you don't even

  746. realize how lost

  747. you are.

  748. Or,

  749. allowing ourselves

  750. to be deceived,

  751. we can be taken

  752. captive by some

  753. other interesting

  754. or convincing

  755. religious notion

  756. about where to

  757. find an authentic,

  758. satisfying life.

  759. It's crazy when

  760. Paul puts the

  761. options like that.

  762. Verses 9 and 10.

  763. It's crazy to try

  764. to cut your own

  765. pathway to God

  766. because we already

  767. have fullness.

  768. We already share

  769. his character.

  770. We already share

  771. in all he has

  772. done for us.

  773. We already share

  774. in all he has

  775. won for us,

  776. including victory

  777. over the guilt

  778. and power of sin

  779. and demonic forces

  780. who would try

  781. and make us

  782. take our eyes

  783. off Jesus

  784. and put them

  785. onto our daily

  786. sin and failures.

  787. With the object

  788. of that being

  789. that we live

  790. in fear

  791. that our sin

  792. will keep us

  793. from God

  794. and we'll

  795. experience God's

  796. ultimate rejection.

  797. Look at

  798. verses 9 and 10.

  799. For in him

  800. the whole fullness

  801. of deity

  802. dwells bodily

  803. and you have

  804. been filled

  805. in him

  806. who is the

  807. head of all

  808. rule and

  809. authority.

  810. In him,

  811. oh that's,

  812. yeah,

  813. alright,

  814. there you go.

  815. Again,

  816. it would be crazy

  817. to cut your

  818. own pathway

  819. trying to

  820. create for

  821. yourself,

  822. trying to

  823. fill the

  824. bucket for

  825. yourself

  826. when Jesus

  827. said,

  828. hey,

  829. I've already

  830. given you

  831. a bucket,

  832. so it's

  833. full to the

  834. brim.

  835. Verse 11,

  836. 12.

  837. The imagery

  838. here gets a

  839. little bit more

  840. complicated at

  841. first glance,

  842. but I think

  843. I'm going to

  844. take a very

  845. simple line

  846. to cut through

  847. it.

  848. it's crazy

  849. to try and

  850. cut your own

  851. pathway to

  852. God,

  853. because in

  854. Jesus we

  855. already have

  856. the closest

  857. form of

  858. identity and

  859. relationship

  860. and being

  861. set apart.

  862. We've already

  863. been,

  864. as the text

  865. here says,

  866. circumcised

  867. spiritually.

  868. Paul says,

  869. in him also

  870. you were

  871. circumcised

  872. with a

  873. circumcision

  874. made without

  875. hands,

  876. by putting

  877. off the

  878. body of

  879. flesh by

  880. the circumcision

  881. of Christ.

  882. having been

  883. buried with

  884. him in

  885. baptism,

  886. in which

  887. you are

  888. also raised

  889. with him

  890. through faith

  891. in the

  892. powerful

  893. working of

  894. God,

  895. who raised

  896. him from

  897. the dead.

  898. Circumcision

  899. for God's

  900. people before

  901. Jesus was

  902. the visible

  903. mark of

  904. being God's

  905. specially

  906. loved and

  907. accepted

  908. person,

  909. being in

  910. God's

  911. community

  912. and safe.

  913. life.

  914. Well,

  915. Paul's

  916. saying,

  917. look,

  918. why would

  919. you cut

  920. your own

  921. pathway to

  922. safety and

  923. identity when

  924. you have it

  925. in Christ

  926. already?

  927. Verses 12

  928. through to 15.

  929. Again,

  930. they pick up

  931. the baptism

  932. thing in

  933. verse 12.

  934. and you

  935. who were

  936. dead in

  937. your

  938. trespasses

  939. and sin

  940. and the

  941. uncircumcision

  942. of your

  943. flesh.

  944. God made

  945. alive together

  946. with him

  947. have forgiven

  948. us all our

  949. trespasses,

  950. all our

  951. trespasses,

  952. by cancelling

  953. the record of

  954. debt that

  955. stood against

  956. us with

  957. its legal

  958. demands.

  959. This he set

  960. aside,

  961. nailing it

  962. to the

  963. cross.

  964. He disarmed

  965. the rulers and

  966. authorities and

  967. put them to

  968. open shame

  969. by triumphing

  970. over them

  971. in him.

  972. It's crazy

  973. to try and

  974. cut your own

  975. pathway to

  976. God because

  977. in Christ

  978. all need

  979. for religious

  980. activity

  981. in the hope

  982. of making

  983. yourself

  984. acceptable to

  985. God is

  986. removed.

  987. Why would

  988. you go down

  989. the rabbit

  990. hole of some

  991. sort of

  992. religious

  993. activity?

  994. Things I

  995. do,

  996. things I

  997. say,

  998. places I

  999. go,

  1000. festivals I

  1001. keep,

  1002. when Jesus

  1003. has done

  1004. it all

  1005. for you

  1006. on the

  1007. cross.

  1008. We don't

  1009. need to

  1010. do more

  1011. because his

  1012. death is

  1013. sufficient.

  1014. We just

  1015. need to

  1016. accept and

  1017. understand and

  1018. live in the

  1019. light of.

  1020. Baptism was

  1021. a picture of

  1022. identification

  1023. and renewal.

  1024. The person

  1025. goes down

  1026. into the

  1027. water,

  1028. it's a

  1029. picture of

  1030. being washed

  1031. or even

  1032. more extreme

  1033. dying as

  1034. you go into

  1035. the water.

  1036. The end of

  1037. this particular

  1038. orientation of

  1039. life.

  1040. Then you

  1041. come back up

  1042. out of the

  1043. water and

  1044. it's a

  1045. picture of

  1046. newness of

  1047. life or

  1048. an orientation

  1049. no longer

  1050. connected to

  1051. the old

  1052. life.

  1053. The two

  1054. have been

  1055. completely

  1056. separated.

  1057. You've

  1058. moved from

  1059. one arena

  1060. to the

  1061. other.

  1062. That's

  1063. what we

  1064. already have

  1065. in the

  1066. gospel.

  1067. Move from

  1068. the domain

  1069. of darkness

  1070. and the

  1071. guilt of

  1072. sin and the

  1073. accusation

  1074. that would

  1075. rightly have

  1076. been leveled

  1077. against us.

  1078. You've got a

  1079. big problem

  1080. before God.

  1081. Now in

  1082. Jesus,

  1083. no accusation.

  1084. I don't have a

  1085. problem in

  1086. God because

  1087. Jesus has

  1088. dealt with

  1089. it.

  1090. We've got

  1091. complete

  1092. identification

  1093. with God.

  1094. Total

  1095. disconnect

  1096. from our

  1097. old life

  1098. of rebellion.

  1099. Completely

  1100. new

  1101. identification,

  1102. new

  1103. orientation,

  1104. new life

  1105. in and

  1106. for God.

  1107. My friends,

  1108. the bucket's

  1109. full.

  1110. There's

  1111. nothing else

  1112. we can

  1113. add

  1114. without

  1115. displacing

  1116. something that

  1117. Jesus already

  1118. put there.

  1119. So keep

  1120. your eyes

  1121. on Jesus.

  1122. Follow

  1123. his

  1124. footprints.

  1125. don't

  1126. get

  1127. yourself

  1128. lost

  1129. wandering

  1130. around.

  1131. Trusting

  1132. your own

  1133. wisdom is

  1134. better than

  1135. what Jesus

  1136. already said

  1137. to you.

  1138. Don't

  1139. allow others

  1140. to run

  1141. you off

  1142. the road

  1143. and cause

  1144. you to

  1145. crash and

  1146. burn because

  1147. they're trying

  1148. to add

  1149. things to

  1150. the bucket

  1151. that's

  1152. already

  1153. full.

  1154. The

  1155. second

  1156. question

  1157. then,

  1158. out of

  1159. this

  1160. second

  1161. question,

  1162. whose

  1163. rules do

  1164. you measure

  1165. your

  1166. spiritual

  1167. health

  1168. and

  1169. maturity

  1170. by?

  1171. Picking

  1172. up verse

  1173. 16 through

  1174. to 23.

  1175. How do

  1176. you measure

  1177. your

  1178. spiritual

  1179. health,

  1180. your

  1181. maturity?

  1182. This

  1183. question is

  1184. the one

  1185. that torpedoes

  1186. so many

  1187. of us as

  1188. Christians from

  1189. time to

  1190. time.

  1191. And I can

  1192. tell you,

  1193. it's one

  1194. that's

  1195. torpedoing,

  1196. causing

  1197. Christians here

  1198. this morning

  1199. to crash and

  1200. burn on a

  1201. daily basis.

  1202. whose

  1203. rules are

  1204. you measuring

  1205. your

  1206. spiritual

  1207. health and

  1208. well-being

  1209. by?

  1210. Again,

  1211. Paul offers

  1212. only two

  1213. options.

  1214. Either

  1215. spiritual

  1216. health will

  1217. be measured

  1218. by what

  1219. so-called

  1220. wise

  1221. religious

  1222. people demand,

  1223. and we'll

  1224. see the

  1225. details of

  1226. that in

  1227. these verses,

  1228. or it's

  1229. measured

  1230. according to

  1231. what Christ

  1232. says,

  1233. what Jesus

  1234. says.

  1235. And again,

  1236. the contrast

  1237. means it's

  1238. Paul saying,

  1239. look, it's

  1240. absolutely

  1241. crazy to

  1242. submit

  1243. yourself to

  1244. a spiritual

  1245. audit from

  1246. those who

  1247. might sound

  1248. super

  1249. spiritual,

  1250. but who

  1251. really have

  1252. no substance

  1253. at all,

  1254. who are

  1255. focused on

  1256. things that

  1257. are on the

  1258. outside,

  1259. things that

  1260. in the end

  1261. can never

  1262. get to our

  1263. real problem

  1264. of our

  1265. hearts.

  1266. So that

  1267. would be

  1268. crazy.

  1269. You polish

  1270. up the

  1271. outside,

  1272. says,

  1273. Paul,

  1274. so what?

  1275. It's

  1276. useless,

  1277. puts you

  1278. through a

  1279. lot of

  1280. pain,

  1281. a lot of

  1282. trouble,

  1283. but it

  1284. does

  1285. nothing to

  1286. change

  1287. your

  1288. heart,

  1289. and it's

  1290. our

  1291. heart that

  1292. the Lord

  1293. looks at.

  1294. So you'd

  1295. be crazy to

  1296. go down that

  1297. pathway.

  1298. It might

  1299. sound terrific,

  1300. it might give

  1301. you some sense

  1302. of control,

  1303. well,

  1304. these people

  1305. say,

  1306. if I do

  1307. this and

  1308. this and

  1309. this,

  1310. then I'm

  1311. in control

  1312. of my own

  1313. destiny.

  1314. Well,

  1315. it's a

  1316. shadow,

  1317. says Paul.

  1318. There's no

  1319. substance to

  1320. that.

  1321. There's no

  1322. value in

  1323. it.

  1324. Your

  1325. bucket's

  1326. already

  1327. full.

  1328. God.

  1329. Why go

  1330. to these

  1331. people,

  1332. verse 19,

  1333. when you

  1334. can go

  1335. straight to

  1336. the top,

  1337. go straight

  1338. to the

  1339. head,

  1340. and get

  1341. it from

  1342. his lips,

  1343. get the

  1344. real

  1345. spiritual

  1346. audit from

  1347. his lips.

  1348. Why?

  1349. Why?

  1350. Why?

  1351. Why?

  1352. Why?

  1353. Why?

  1354. Why?

  1355. Why?

  1356. Why?

  1357. Why?

  1358. Why?

  1359. Why?

  1360. Why?

  1361. Why?

  1362. Why?

  1363. Why?

  1364. Why?

  1365. Why?

  1366. Who better

  1367. to know what

  1368. the body

  1369. needs than

  1370. the head?

  1371. We're back

  1372. to this

  1373. organic

  1374. connection

  1375. again.

  1376. Jesus

  1377. is actually

  1378. described there

  1379. through its

  1380. joints and

  1381. ligaments.

  1382. The body

  1383. has structure

  1384. because

  1385. Jesus is

  1386. the ligament

  1387. that connects

  1388. us to

  1389. the head,

  1390. which is

  1391. the fullness

  1392. of deity

  1393. living in

  1394. Christ.

  1395. It's a

  1396. picture of

  1397. complete

  1398. structural

  1399. integrity,

  1400. a complete

  1401. healthy

  1402. body.

  1403. Pleasing

  1404. God and

  1405. growing steadily

  1406. to maturity.

  1407. Friends,

  1408. this is such

  1409. an important

  1410. point,

  1411. such an

  1412. important

  1413. point,

  1414. but you

  1415. know what?

  1416. And I say

  1417. this for

  1418. myself as

  1419. well.

  1420. Obviously,

  1421. we haven't

  1422. yet taken

  1423. it on

  1424. board,

  1425. not

  1426. consistently.

  1427. And the

  1428. reason I

  1429. know that

  1430. in my own

  1431. life is

  1432. because of

  1433. the things

  1434. that distract

  1435. me,

  1436. the things

  1437. I worry

  1438. about,

  1439. I'm

  1440. trying to

  1441. fill a

  1442. bucket that's

  1443. got leaks

  1444. in it,

  1445. rather than

  1446. just looking

  1447. at that

  1448. bucket brimming

  1449. full,

  1450. the overflowing

  1451. that's already

  1452. mine in

  1453. Christ.

  1454. So I'll just

  1455. finish with a

  1456. couple of

  1457. encouragements.

  1458. In this,

  1459. these last

  1460. few verses,

  1461. there's a play

  1462. on shadows

  1463. and substance.

  1464. Well, I

  1465. say to you

  1466. this morning,

  1467. don't live

  1468. in the

  1469. shadows.

  1470. Don't live

  1471. in the

  1472. shadows when

  1473. we can

  1474. live in

  1475. the substance

  1476. of Jesus.

  1477. Don't live

  1478. as a

  1479. derelict

  1480. in a

  1481. slum,

  1482. thinking that

  1483. you have

  1484. to be

  1485. religious,

  1486. thinking that

  1487. you have to

  1488. work constantly

  1489. to reconnect

  1490. yourself to

  1491. God,

  1492. to top up

  1493. the bucket,

  1494. to create

  1495. the good

  1496. life of

  1497. completeness.

  1498. When Christ

  1499. says to you,

  1500. what are you

  1501. doing?

  1502. Even if you

  1503. did that for

  1504. the rest of

  1505. your life,

  1506. it would never

  1507. be enough to

  1508. make yourself

  1509. acceptable to

  1510. God.

  1511. And besides

  1512. that,

  1513. why would you

  1514. do that

  1515. whenever I

  1516. want to give

  1517. you a full

  1518. bucket as a

  1519. free gift?

  1520. more

  1521. personally,

  1522. don't live

  1523. in the

  1524. shadows,

  1525. fearful that

  1526. your ongoing

  1527. sin and

  1528. failure means

  1529. you're not

  1530. saved.

  1531. There are

  1532. folk here this

  1533. morning who

  1534. are just

  1535. traumatized by

  1536. that day

  1537. and night,

  1538. maybe more

  1539. so at night.

  1540. Don't live

  1541. in the

  1542. shadows,

  1543. fearful that

  1544. your ongoing

  1545. sin and

  1546. failures mean

  1547. you're not

  1548. saved.

  1549. Don't live

  1550. in the

  1551. shadows

  1552. despairing

  1553. because you're

  1554. not sorry

  1555. enough for

  1556. your sin.

  1557. Don't live

  1558. in the

  1559. shadows

  1560. thinking that

  1561. because your

  1562. thoughts of

  1563. God are not

  1564. pure enough

  1565. and your

  1566. trust in God

  1567. is not

  1568. strong enough

  1569. and your

  1570. knowledge of

  1571. God is not

  1572. big enough.

  1573. Look at

  1574. the bucket.

  1575. filled to the

  1576. brim.

  1577. Sufficiency

  1578. of your

  1579. Savior and

  1580. the absoluteness

  1581. of your

  1582. Lord who

  1583. says,

  1584. you are my

  1585. beloved

  1586. child.

  1587. So the

  1588. problem with

  1589. doing that

  1590. is that the

  1591. bucket that's

  1592. already full,

  1593. you think you're

  1594. going forward

  1595. but you're

  1596. actually going

  1597. backwards

  1598. because the

  1599. more you

  1600. try to add

  1601. stuff to the

  1602. full bucket

  1603. of the

  1604. gospel,

  1605. the more

  1606. you're

  1607. displacing what

  1608. Jesus has

  1609. already done.

  1610. And

  1611. finally,

  1612. more of a

  1613. church application,

  1614. church family

  1615. application.

  1616. Church family,

  1617. don't live in the

  1618. shadows with a

  1619. sense of

  1620. embarrassment or

  1621. inferiority

  1622. because our

  1623. church family

  1624. doesn't have all

  1625. the bells and

  1626. whistles that

  1627. other groups

  1628. might have and

  1629. promote as the

  1630. evidence of a

  1631. healthy,

  1632. mature church.

  1633. They might be

  1634. healthy,

  1635. mature churches

  1636. but not because

  1637. of the bells and

  1638. whistles they

  1639. promote.

  1640. don't live in

  1641. that shadow,

  1642. fearful or

  1643. embarrassed or

  1644. with a sense of

  1645. inferiority.

  1646. When Jesus

  1647. tells us from

  1648. his word

  1649. clearly that

  1650. the truly

  1651. healthy church

  1652. is the one

  1653. where Jesus

  1654. is taught

  1655. and lived

  1656. out before

  1657. one another

  1658. in love,

  1659. we saw that

  1660. from the very

  1661. first week back

  1662. in chapter 1

  1663. verse 6 and 7

  1664. and that's a

  1665. tough gig to

  1666. live that out

  1667. in love and

  1668. to live it out

  1669. before a

  1670. watching world

  1671. so the

  1672. watching world

  1673. thinks,

  1674. wow,

  1675. I don't know

  1676. what makes

  1677. those Christians

  1678. tick but I

  1679. want a part

  1680. of it.

  1681. Don't live in

  1682. the shadows

  1683. when the

  1684. spotlight's on

  1685. Jesus.

  1686. Pray with

  1687. me.

  1688. Amen.

  1689. Amen.

  1690. Amen.

  1691. Amen.

  1692. Amen.

  1693. Amen.

  1694. Amen.

  1695. Amen.

  1696. Amen.

  1697. Amen.

  1698. Amen.

  1699. Amen.

  1700. Amen.

  1701. Amen.

  1702. Amen.

  1703. Amen.

  1704. Amen.

  1705. Amen.

  1706. Amen.

  1707. Lord, just fill our

  1708. hearts with this

  1709. stuff that probably

1710. for most of us is

  1711. so familiar and yet

  1712. we struggle to hang

  1713. on to it.

1714. Help us just to keep

  1715. that picture of

  1716. things together that

  1717. you, that we sort

  1718. of normally want to

  1719. separate, that you

  1720. are both a sufficient

  1721. savior and a

  1722. gracious, powerful

  1723. Lord.

1724. that we have a full bucket

  1725. in Christ

1726. that not only are we in Christ

1727. but he is in us

  1728. by his Holy Spirit

  1729. and that therefore Lord

1730. we do truly and completely have life

1731. help us to live in the light of it

  1732. with confidence

  1733. and abounding in thanksgiving

  1734. Amen
