  1. Psalm 3, a psalm of David when he fled from Absalom his son.

  2. O Lord, how many are my foes?

  3. Many are rising against me.

  4. Many are saying of my soul, there is no salvation from him in God.

  5. But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory and the lifter of my head.

  6. I cried aloud to the Lord and he answered me from his holy hill.

  7. I lay down and slept.

  8. I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.

  9. I will not be afraid of many thousands of people who have set themselves against me all round.

  10. Arise, O Lord, save me, O my God.

  11. If you strike all my enemies on the cheek, you break the teeth of the wicked.

  12. Salvation belongs to the Lord.

  13. Your blessing be on your people.

  14. There's many challenges to living as a Christian, but one of the toughest ones, I think, is to keep together that which we believe about God or we think we believe about God.

  15. When our circumstances often seem to be at odds with that or often feel as though they're at odds with that.

  16. We believe in God's goodness and commitment to us.

  17. And yet so often in our hearts we're overwhelmed with sadness.

  18. We're paralyzed by fear.

  19. Sometimes we're even consumed by anger.

  20. And it's a struggle keeping those two things together.

  21. When our circumstances push us one way and what we believe draws us another way.

  22. And that gets worse because sometimes in that sort of situation we're already super aware of our sinfulness.

  23. And then from there it's very easy to conclude that our circumstances are evidence that God's actually abandoned us.

  24. So often we slip into that pattern of doing our theology by circumstance.

  25. Now perhaps our church family life is a current example of this struggle.

  26. For nine weeks we've soaked up and we really have enjoyed soaking up from the letter of Colossians.

  27. The wonderful truth that our story, our story, is inseparably bound to the story of Jesus Christ.

  28. That in Christ and united to him, the image we've been using is that our buckets are full and overflowing.

  29. Buckets of identity, meaning and purpose and security and satisfaction.

  30. In Christ we have the good life, the full life, the rich life that God intends us to have.

  31. But then you just need to look over the last two weeks in our church family and so much has been happening.

  32. There's been so many in hospital.

  33. I've never seen it like that before.

  34. So many at the one time in hospital.

  35. We had the birth and very short life of Narrahan.

  36. We got the impending death of John King.

  37. We got so many struggling in their marriages.

  38. We got so many grief stricken by rebellious children and at their wits end as to what to do with them.

  39. Then a bit of wider thing, we got the threat of economic recession.

  40. We got the growing fear of escalating war.

  41. And so it seems like perhaps, I can't speak with the authority of the Lord, but it seems like, at least we need to consider that,

  42. perhaps our theoretical knowledge and enjoyment of that notion of fullness in Christ,

  43. that we have everything we need to live well,

  44. is actually being severely tested by circumstances.

  45. Will we live as those whose buckets are full in Christ,

  46. in the uncertainty of life, in the messiness of life,

  47. in at times the grief of life?

  48. That takes us into Psalm 3 that we're going to be looking at this morning.

  49. And I just want to mention that Psalm 3 is actually an important progression from Psalm 1 and 2,

  50. and that's not just an Irish-ism.

  51. There's an important progression in the themes of the Psalms.

  52. So Psalm 1 declares that good life is sourced in obedience to the Lord.

  53. Psalm 2 declares the absolute sovereignty of God to achieve His purpose in and through His people.

  54. And Psalm 3 puts us sort of in between those two things,

  55. in the life of faith, as we see it expressed by King David,

  56. a life grounded in those two truths,

  57. that there is the good life,

  58. and that it is to be found living under the sovereignty of God.

  59. But it's a challenge.

  60. It's a challenge.

  61. We struggle through daily circumstances and experience of living in a world that's broken by sin,

  62. broken by rebellion.

  63. And that's why we're going to jump into Psalm 3 now.

  64. Because at the very start,

  65. we see that David's bleak circumstances

  66. cause him to retreat or flee.

  67. Now, some of this stuff, I'm assuming you've read the backstory in 2 Samuel 14 to 18.

  68. If you haven't, you're a guest here this morning,

  69. then you should read it sometime.

  70. It'll really fill in the picture of Psalm 3.

  71. That's the awfulness behind verses 1 and 2.

  72. And to put it in this blunt form,

  73. the awfulness is a coup d'etat

  74. organized against King David by his very own son Absalom,

  75. whom he had treated with such kindness and generosity.

  76. And coup d'etats are always, by definition,

  77. bloody affairs.

  78. The backstory, therefore, is an outrageous political drama

  79. where secretly, over a four-year period,

  80. Absalom worked to win the hearts of the nation of Israel to himself

  81. against his father, King David,

  82. through intrigue and deception.

  83. Essentially, he was saying to the people,

  84. look, come over and demise it.

  85. I will be a better king.

  86. And eventually, Absalom got the support

  87. and marched openly with a huge army

  88. and occupied Jerusalem, the center of the nation.

  89. His intent?

  90. To depose and kill his father, King David.

  91. So it wasn't just an outrageous political drama,

  92. it was a really sad family drama.

  93. Because of the monarchy,

  94. the only way Absalom could get the throne

  95. was actually to kill his father.

  96. Who was the current king?

  97. Murderous intent.

  98. Now imagine the pain that David was feeling,

  99. King David was feeling.

  100. When he thought about what his son intended to do.

  101. When he thought about how his son had planned this

  102. for four or five or six years,

  103. in verse one,

  104. David's situation was getting worse by the day.

  105. David knew

  106. that this had got a momentum

  107. and that trusted loyal people

  108. that were abandoning him by the day

  109. and signing up with Absalom.

  110. And caught unawares,

  111. if you read the back story,

  112. caught unawares and unprepared,

  113. David decided to retreat

  114. or flee from Jerusalem.

  115. Remember, Jerusalem was the seat of his throne,

  116. the seat of his power,

  117. the center of the kingdom,

  118. the very place where God had installed him.

  119. And David decides to retreat or flee.

  120. Now a very important question in here,

  121. why did David flee or retreat?

  122. Well, I don't think it was because he feared Absalom.

  123. Quite the opposite.

  124. I think it was because he loved Absalom.

  125. He loved Absalom

  126. and he could see the foolishness

  127. and the stupidity of his son.

  128. Recognizing the son wasn't just dealing with him,

  129. but he was taking on God.

  130. But I think also David loved his people

  131. and he refused to subject them

  132. to a bloody savagery of a coup d'etat.

  133. A bloody civil war.

  134. So David retreats.

  135. But that action was a loving action

  136. for the good of his son

  137. and for the good of his nation.

  138. But perhaps most hurtful of all

  139. is that last line in verse 2

  140. was the rumors.

  141. Rumors are always hurtful, aren't they?

  142. Because they're everywhere,

  143. but you can't actually get a hold of them.

  144. Rumors are devastating things.

  145. And the rumor circulating

  146. was that David's own sinful behavior

  147. had brought all this upon him.

  148. Perhaps it was a reference to the fact

  149. that David himself had replaced King Saul.

  150. Or perhaps it was a reference

  151. to David's sin with Bathsheba

  152. and subsequent murder of her husband.

  153. In other words, the rumor was saying,

  154. look, God has abandoned King David.

  155. And now he's put his blessing on Absalom.

  156. So if you want to be

  157. on the right side of history,

  158. that's a modern frame,

  159. get with Absalom.

  160. And again, imagine David's feeling there.

  161. Imagine what that would do

  162. with his inner landscape.

  163. Well, perhaps it's true.

  164. I thought that this,

  165. my sin had been,

  166. I had repented of it

  167. and had been dealt with by the Lord

  168. and the Lord had restored me.

  169. But maybe, maybe not.

  170. It would have caused enormous torment

  171. in David's mind

  172. as he considered this possibility.

  173. So friends, it's not hard

  174. to sense something of the agony

  175. and the distress and confusion

  176. that afflicted King David.

  177. And most of us will recognize

  178. the thinking that quickly flows from that.

  179. And we look at our circumstances

  180. and we quickly move to thinking

  181. that, well, perhaps my circumstances

  182. reflect that I've forfeited

  183. any support or blessing

  184. or ongoing relationship with the Lord.

  185. Now, at this point,

  186. we have to look at this

  187. strange little word in the text

  188. called Selah

  189. at the end of verse 2.

  190. Now, nobody really knows

  191. what it is in detail.

  192. The best guess, I suppose,

  193. the best scholarly guess

  194. is that it's a musical notation

  195. which is something like

  196. pause or rest or interlude.

  197. In other words, I think

  198. what it's really saying is,

  199. look, given what I've just said,

  200. stop and reflect.

  201. Remember, this is poetry.

  202. So it's actually saying,

  203. stop and reflect

  204. what's just been said.

  205. Is the growing majority right

  206. in their assessment of King David?

  207. Should he be doing his theology

  208. by circumstance?

  209. Could it possibly be true

  210. that God has abandoned

  211. his servant, King David?

  212. We'll pause and reflect.

  213. It's a huge concept

  214. with so much writing on it.

  215. Next point I want to make

  216. if you've fallen through

  217. in the outline

  218. is that King David does retreat,

  219. but it's really important

  220. to know how he retreats.

  221. He doesn't retreat into himself

  222. or into his own fears,

  223. but he retreats into God's character

  224. and God's word

  225. if you look at verses 3 and 4.

  226. But you, O Lord,

  227. are a shield about me,

  228. my glory,

  229. and the lifter of my head.

  230. Isn't it true that so often

  231. when life gets tough

  232. we do retreat into ourselves,

  233. into our own inner thinking,

  234. into our scrambling

  235. for a new connection

  236. with our own resources

  237. to begin the process

  238. of self-salvation?

  239. And sometimes that's expressed

  240. in victimhood

  241. where the best way

  242. to deal with things

  243. is to say that

  244. somebody else is to blame

  245. for my circumstance.

  246. Or perhaps it's withdrawal

  247. from relationships

  248. generally in life

  249. and engaging

  250. only with those people

  251. that we think are safe

  252. who will actually deliver

  253. some happiness

  254. and well-being to us.

  255. But there's nothing like that

  256. in David's response.

  257. Instead,

  258. David moves deeper

  259. into the heart of God.

  260. Convinced that strength

  261. and refreshment

  262. and courage to thrive

  263. is not in changed circumstance,

  264. but in a fresh appreciation

  265. of God's beauty

  266. and God's covenant faithfulness

  267. and God's sufficiency

  268. for his every situation.

  269. But you, O Lord,

  270. are a shield.

  271. He starts to rehearse

  272. what he knows about God.

  273. You, O Lord,

  274. are my bodyguard.

  275. That's the emphasis

  276. of that word there.

  277. Picture a cluster

  278. of CIA men

  279. gathered around

  280. the president,

  281. literally protecting him

  282. from every angle.

  283. For any enemy out there

  284. who wants to harm him,

  285. that's the picture

  286. that David retreats into.

  287. God is the source

  288. of my value,

  289. security,

  290. and reputation.

  291. That's the force

  292. of my glory

  293. and the lifter of my head.

  294. See,

  295. King David

  296. isn't interested

  297. in popular esteem.

  298. He knows

  299. that he has no glory

  300. in himself.

  301. But since his position

  302. is a reflected glory,

  303. that is,

  304. as God's king,

  305. he has the reflected glory

  306. of God himself,

  307. the covenant God himself,

  308. as a servant of the Lord,

  309. then David knows

  310. that he can trust the Lord

  311. to act for his own glory.

  312. God is his vindicator,

  313. in other words.

  314. David is confident

  315. that Yahweh,

  316. that is the name

  317. of the Lord God

  318. here used in this psalm,

  319. Yahweh,

  320. the personal name of God,

  321. Yahweh himself

  322. will fight

  323. for David.

  324. Why?

  325. Because David

  326. is God's appointed king.

  327. And therefore,

  328. equally true

  329. that when his enemies

  330. take on King David,

  331. they should realize

  332. that they're taking on Yahweh.

  333. And in the end,

  334. David knows

  335. that it's God's assessment

  336. of him

  337. that matters.

  338. And that physical circumstances

  339. are not

  340. an accurate guide

  341. to God's assessment

  342. of him.

  343. And verse 4,

  344. he continues to rehearse

  345. what he knows.

  346. God's salvation purpose

  347. gives my apparent

  348. chaos

  349. order.

  350. I cried aloud

  351. to the Lord

  352. and he answered me

  353. from his holy hill.

  354. Now again,

  355. in poetry terms,

  356. it's a little bit

  357. cryptic here.

  358. But the point

  359. I want to say

  360. is this,

  361. is that

  362. David's predicament

  363. does not drive

  364. him away

  365. from the Lord

  366. in a frenetic

  367. attempt at self-salvation,

  368. but drives him

  369. to the Lord

  370. in urgent prayer.

  371. Why?

  372. Because the Lord

  373. is the one

  374. who has the answers.

  375. The Lord

  376. who knows everything

  377. can put order

  378. into the chaos

  379. of David's life.

  380. and his confidence

  381. is rewarded

  382. because the Lord

  383. answers him.

  384. Confirming what?

  385. Well,

  386. we're not told here,

  387. so we assume

  388. that the answer

  389. is confirming

  390. David's analysis

  391. in verses 2 and 3,

  392. verses 3 and 4 rather.

  393. confirming David's faith

  394. and trust in God alone.

  395. And sensing that God

  396. answers him

  397. from his holy hill

  398. or another word

  399. would be Zion

  400. or both of those things

  401. are just words

  402. for Jerusalem.

  403. And Jerusalem

  404. is very significant

  405. because that's the place

  406. where God

  407. has taken up

  408. his dwelling

  409. among his people.

  410. That's the place

  411. where God rules

  412. both the nation of Israel

  413. and the whole world.

  414. So,

  415. the confirmation

  416. for David

  417. is that Absalom

  418. who has now

  419. occupied Jerusalem

  420. may think

  421. that his word

  422. is going to rule.

  423. But David's confidence

  424. is no.

  425. The sovereign Lord

  426. is still enthroned

  427. and his word

  428. will be the final word

  429. heard and acted on

  430. from Jerusalem.

  431. It will be God's power,

  432. God's voice

  433. that will be heard

  434. ultimately.

  435. And so,

  436. there's a really lovely

  437. confirmation

  438. and rehearsal

  439. here for David.

  440. That is,

  441. King David's confidence

  442. is not that God

  443. is on his side,

  444. but that he

  445. as God's king

  446. is on God's side.

  447. That's a hugely

  448. different statement.

  449. That he's part

  450. of God's

  451. much bigger

  452. salvation plan

  453. for his people.

  454. And again,

  455. with that thought

  456. we say,

  457. Selah.

  458. Just pause

  459. and reflect

  460. on that truth,

  461. on God's character

  462. and purpose

  463. as we struggle

  464. through the mess

  465. of life.

  466. Flaying into God's character

  467. enables King David

  468. to press on

  469. in confident

  470. faith and trust

  471. verses 5 and 6.

  472. Knowing God's character

  473. and rehearsing

  474. in his own mind

  475. and regaining

  476. a confident

  477. trust

  478. in that

  479. and seeing the beauty

  480. of his situation

  481. as being

  482. on God's side

  483. enables David,

  484. frees David

  485. to do

  486. what he needs

  487. to do.

  488. Confident

  489. that the Lord

  490. will do

  491. what only he can do.

  492. And so in the short term

  493. David needs

  494. to get some rest.

  495. And so

  496. he lies down

  497. and he sleeps.

  498. He sleeps sound.

  499. And you can hear him

  500. getting up the next morning

  501. saying,

  502. my goodness me,

  503. in spite of all

  504. that's been happening

  505. I slept so sound

  506. last night.

  507. That of itself

  508. is evidence

  509. that God

  510. is sustaining me.

  511. And what's more

  512. he's saying to his advisors

  513. I woke this morning

  514. strangely

  515. without fear.

  516. Even though

  517. my enemies

  518. are still there,

  519. even though

  520. my circumstances

  521. are still the same

  522. as where they were

  523. last night,

  524. I woke fresh

  525. this morning.

  526. Again,

  527. why?

  528. Because God

  529. is on the job.

  530. God

  531. now,

  532. again,

  533. it's important

  534. to realize here

  535. that this is not

  536. the sleep

  537. of an arrogant fool

  538. who's lost touch

  539. with reality.

  540. it's not the sleep

  541. of an arrogant man

  542. supremely confident

  543. in his own resources

  544. saying,

  545. well,

  546. let them do

  547. what they want,

  548. I'll sort them

  549. out in the morning.

  550. It was the confident,

  551. trusting,

  552. faithful words,

  553. the actions of faith

  554. in God's control

  555. of the situation.

  556. Yes,

  557. David's enemies

  558. were all about him,

  559. but so was the Lord

  560. and the terms there

  561. are very much parallel.

  562. His enemies

  563. were all about him

  564. and it's meant

  565. to bounce off

  566. what David's already

  567. become convinced of,

  568. that the Lord

  569. was all about him.

  570. And so,

  571. as we're told

  572. in the back story,

  573. David gets up

  574. and prepares himself

  575. for the battle

  576. that Absalom

  577. has left him

  578. no choice

  579. but to fight.

  580. And I think David

  581. goes into that battle

  582. and if you read

  583. the back story,

  584. you can get that

  585. from the back story.

  586. He goes into that battle,

  587. not actually sure

  588. how it's going to turn out,

  589. but what he is sure about

  590. is that whether

  591. he lives or dies,

  592. God's purpose

  593. for his people

  594. will be achieved.

  595. But we're not done yet

  596. because David's still

  597. stepping through

  598. this process

  599. and he does press forward

  600. with new confidence

  601. but he's always longing

  602. for God's ultimate renewal

  603. of his rebellious people.

  604. verses 7 and 8.

  605. Now again,

  606. we see in verse 7,

  607. David's faith perspective.

  608. He says,

  609. Arise, O Lord.

  610. It's a call,

  611. as it were,

  612. a pleading with God

  613. to act.

  614. This is your show, God.

  615. I'm on your side.

  616. You're my commander

  617. in a sense.

  618. over to you,

  619. in a sense.

  620. David's hope

  621. for that day

  622. and for every day

  623. in the future

  624. was God's action,

  625. God's activity.

  626. Now,

  627. this is a really important

  628. balance here

  629. because,

  630. see,

  631. we can look back

  632. and we say

  633. David had displayed

  634. incredible faith,

  635. incredible trust

  636. in response

  637. to his circumstances.

  638. There's no question

  639. about that.

  640. He had done

  641. what was right

  642. in terms of responding

  643. to his circumstances

  644. but here's the point.

  645. David was never satisfied

  646. with his response.

  647. He was never satisfied

  648. with his actions.

  649. He never relies on them

  650. and he certainly

  651. never thinks

  652. that he can deliver

  653. what God's people

  654. really need

  655. because,

  656. you see,

  657. David himself

  658. was a man of sin.

  659. He knew

  660. that his faith today

  661. could crumble

  662. into foolishness tomorrow.

  663. That's been his history

  664. in the past.

  665. So,

  666. while he was seeking

  667. to do the right thing,

  668. he was never satisfied

  669. with it.

  670. He never relied on it

  671. and he never,

  672. ever for a moment

  673. thought he could deliver

  674. in this situation

  675. what God's foolish people

  676. in the height of rebellion

  677. really need.

  678. And so he says,

  679. Arise, O Lord.

  680. And then he says,

  681. Save me, O my God.

  682. Now,

  683. it seems

  684. and looks immediately

  685. like it's self-interested

  686. but I don't think it is.

  687. Rather,

  688. he knows

  689. the fortunes

  690. of his people

  691. are tied to his.

  692. He's their king

  693. and what comes

  694. to King David

  695. comes to his people.

  696. So,

  697. his ultimate concern

  698. as God's king

  699. is to see

  700. God's salvation purpose

  701. achieved through him

  702. for all God's foolish,

  703. rebellious people.

  704. And David includes himself

  705. in that.

  706. He's capable of equal foolishness,

  707. equal stupidity

  708. and has been.

  709. See,

  710. at this point,

  711. I think David

  712. is preparing

  713. for a battle

  714. that's in front of him

  715. but he's longing

  716. for much,

  717. much more

  718. than just

  719. political

  720. reunification.

  721. He knows

  722. what his people need.

  723. He knows

  724. what he needs

  725. and that is

  726. he knows

  727. that rebellion

  728. comes from the heart

  729. and therefore

  730. to properly address

  731. and fix rebellion

  732. then he and his people

  733. need new hearts,

  734. new desires,

  735. new attitudes

  736. if the cycle

  737. of foolish,

  738. rebellious,

  739. destructive,

  740. sinful actions

  741. is to be broken

  742. finally and fixed properly.

  743. So David's longing

  744. even as he prepares

  745. for an immediate battle

  746. he's longing

  747. for something much bigger,

  748. a bigger battle

  749. as it were

  750. to be fought

  751. to deliver God's people.

  752. And if you look

  753. then at verse 8,

  754. salvation belongs

  755. to the Lord,

  756. your blessing

  757. be on your people.

  758. David knows

  759. that salvation

  760. and blessing

  761. are inseparably linked,

  762. two sides

  763. of one coin

  764. and that both

  765. are God's intention

  766. to deliver

  767. to his people

  768. through his appointed king.

  769. So to know

  770. God's blessing,

  771. Psalm 1,

  772. is to be delivered

  773. from rebellion

  774. into new obedience

  775. and righteousness.

  776. That is the blessed life.

  777. To know God's salvation

  778. requires new submission,

  779. new loyalty

  780. to God's sovereign king.

  781. That's Psalm 2 again.

  782. So in this situation,

  783. David understands

  784. his people.

  785. He understands

  786. that they're craving

  787. for the life of blessing,

  788. the good life.

  789. And that's a

  790. proper craving.

  791. That's a real craving.

  792. But they're foolishly

  793. trying to find it

  794. in Absalom,

  795. which is what Absalom

  796. is foolishly

  797. promising

  798. God's people.

  799. That he will give them

  800. a better life,

  801. the life that David

  802. couldn't give them

  803. and didn't give them.

  804. So he feels

  805. for his people.

  806. He sees their plight,

  807. one stupidity

  808. building on another.

  809. And King David

  810. longs for the Lord

  811. to act,

  812. claiming back

  813. his rightful honour,

  814. delivering true blessing

  815. for the truly good life

  816. for his people.

  817. And friends,

  818. if you haven't already

  819. come with me

  820. to this point,

  821. you can hear

  822. the whisper of Jesus

  823. in that,

  824. can't you?

  825. You can hear

  826. the whisper of Jesus

  827. in that longing

  828. of David.

  829. Jesus is the one

  830. who actually

  831. delivers

  832. on that

  833. which David

  834. can only long for

  835. and articulate.

  836. See,

  837. like King David,

  838. Jesus experienced

  839. the awfulness

  840. of hatred,

  841. rebellion,

  842. disloyalty,

  843. and betrayal

  844. from his own family.

  845. John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  846. he came to those

  847. who were his own

  848. but they wouldn't

  849. receive him

  850. because they could

  851. get a better life

  852. apart from Jesus.

  853. but like

  854. King David,

  855. the Lord Jesus

  856. continued

  857. to be committed

  858. to their best interests

  859. even while

  860. they were rejecting him.

  861. and if you look

  862. at 2 Samuel 18

    2 Samuel 18:32

  863. verse 32,

  864. there's a really

  865. poignant verse there

  866. right at the very end

  867. of this whole story

  868. when David is grieving

  869. for his son Absalom.

  870. You could just feel

  871. the pathos.

  872. David said,

  873. Absalom,

  874. Absalom,

  875. my son,

  876. I wish that I could

  877. have died

  878. in your place.

  879. My friends,

  880. that's the gospel.

  881. David was breathing

  882. the gospel

  883. without even knowing it.

  884. Would that I

  885. could have died

  886. in your place.

  887. You're the rebel,

  888. you're the fool,

  889. Absalom,

  890. but I,

  891. as God's king,

  892. would gladly have died

  893. for you if I could.

  894. And of course he couldn't

  895. because David's hands

  896. had blood on him.

  897. But the Lord Jesus did.

  898. what David could only

  899. long for

  900. and experience in part,

  901. Jesus did.

  902. And again,

  903. verse 7 and verse 8,

  904. David's longing

  905. was literally

  906. played out

  907. on

  908. Jesus.

  909. He was the one

  910. who took the

  911. knockout blow,

  912. the humiliation

  913. of being struck

  914. and that picture

  915. in verse 7

  916. is the ultimate

  917. humiliation

  918. that they've been,

  919. you know,

  920. taking the head

  921. off type blow.

  922. Well,

  923. God did it

  924. to his son,

  925. Jesus.

  926. Why?

  927. Because that's

  928. what was required

  929. to deal with enemies,

  930. rebels,

  931. in the name

  932. of justice.

  933. Jesus took

  934. God's knockout blow,

  935. his humiliation

  936. and death

  937. as the consequences

  938. and the punishment

  939. of rebellion

  940. as he took it

  941. upon himself.

  942. And the result

  943. for us who are believers

  944. here this morning

  945. is absolutely incredible.

  946. By sheer grace

  947. and mercy,

  948. God,

  949. in a very real sense,

  950. has become

  951. our bodyguard,

  952. verse 2,

  953. has become

  954. our glory,

  955. has become

  956. the lifter

  957. of our head.

  958. As Dave

  959. prayed at the start,

  960. the removal

  961. of shame

  962. and guilt,

  963. restoration

  964. of reputation

  965. and meaning

  966. and identity

  967. and purpose,

  968. security.

  969. What David

  970. could only

  971. long for,

  972. we now

  973. enjoy

  974. and fill

  975. the life

  976. of blessing.

  977. We create

  978. validation,

  979. security,

  980. reputation,

  981. all of that

  982. which is

  983. unchanging

  984. and inexhaustible.

  985. The full bucket

  986. I spoke of

  987. in the introduction.

  988. That's for us

  989. as believers.

  990. But there's

  991. one more thing

  992. I want to say

  993. just before I sit down.

  994. I've no doubt

  995. there's some here

  996. who aren't yet

  997. believers.

  998. You may be in,

  999. your parents may

  1000. be believers

  1001. and you may have

  1002. grown up in a

  1003. Christian family

  1004. all your life

  1005. but not yet

  1006. be a believer

  1007. yourself.

  1008. Well,

  1009. all of that

  1010. that I just said

  1011. is immediately

  1012. available to you

  1013. also.

  1014. Like verse 4,

  1015. you just need

  1016. to cry out

  1017. to the Lord

  1018. and he will

  1019. answer you.

  1020. You're craving

  1021. for the life

  1022. of blessing,

  1023. security,

  1024. identity and purpose,

  1025. trying to fit

  1026. into this world

  1027. that's broken

  1028. and horrible.

  1029. Come to Jesus.

  1030. The Colby Cannon

  1031. song reflects

  1032. these words.

  1033. It says,

  1034. in this situation

  1035. if you fear

  1036. you can go to

  1037. Jesus,

  1038. if you're lost,

  1039. he will come

  1040. to you.

  1041. All you need

  1042. to do is

  1043. recognize that

  1044. salvation is

  1045. God's prerogative

  1046. and that salvation

  1047. through Jesus,

  1048. that he's having

  1049. a new heart,

  1050. new desires,

  1051. new adages,

  1052. having your sin

  1053. and rebellion

  1054. dealt with

  1055. properly and

  1056. finally,

  1057. is the pathway

  1058. to blessing

  1059. and life.

  1060. That life

  1061. you're craving

  1062. but currently

  1063. trying to

  1064. find somewhere else.

  1065. Come to him

  1066. begging for that

  1067. renewal.

  1068. Come to him

  1069. as a guilty

  1070. rebel

  1071. asking for

  1072. inside-out

  1073. renewal

  1074. and you know

  1075. what?

  1076. He'll be

  1077. delighted

  1078. to give it

  1079. to you.

  1080. Pray with me.

  1081. Father,

  1082. we finish

  1083. where the

  1084. psalm

  1085. finished

  1086. with a

  1087. sealah

  1088. and we

  1089. pause and

  1090. reflect on

  1091. David's

  1092. longing

  1093. for an

  1094. inner renewal,

  1095. not just a

  1096. change of

  1097. circumstances

  1098. to renewed

  1099. political unity

  1100. in the nation

  1101. without bloodshed

  1102. if possible

  1103. but Lord,

  1104. something

  1105. far,

  1106. far greater,

  1107. renewal from

  1108. the inside-out

  1109. and a

  1110. freedom from

  1111. a rebellion

  1112. and a

  1113. true experience

  1114. of the

  1115. fullness of

  1116. life

  1117. and how

  1118. that longing

  1119. became reality

  1120. in the Lord

  1121. Jesus.

  1122. Lord,

  1123. at that point

  1124. we say

  1125. sealah,

  1126. we pause

  1127. and reflect

  1128. on your

  1129. goodness.

  1130. Amen.

  1131. Amen.

  1132. Amen.

  1133. Amen.

  1134. Amen.

  1135. Amen.

  1136. Amen.

  1137. Amen.

  1138. Amen.

  1139. Amen.

  1140. Amen.

  1141. Amen.

  1142. Amen.

  1143. Amen.

  1144. Amen.

  1145. Amen.

  1146. Amen.

  1147. Amen.

  1148. Amen.

  1149. Amen.

  1150. Amen.

  1151. Amen.

  1152. Amen.

  1153. Amen.

  1154. Amen.

  1155. We thank you

  1156. for the example

  1157. of King David

  1158. as a man

  1159. of faith

  1160. and trust

  1161. in this word

  1162. but we thank

  1163. you even

  1164. more Lord

1165. that he was a man

  1166. who was not

  1167. satisfied with his

  1168. own efforts

  1169. no matter how

  1170. good they were

  1171. but pointed us

  1172. to that which we

  1173. know now to be

  1174. the Lord Jesus.

  1175. I pray that we

  1176. might not be

  1177. like Absalom

  1178. or the people

  1179. of Israel

1180. at that time, despising your goodness and your grace to us.

1181. Help us to live humbly and confidently

  1182. under King Jesus

1183. and know blessing and salvation and security.

1184. In his name I pray. Amen.

1185. Thank you very much for listening.
