  1. Good morning, church family.

  2. As Dave said, there's two readings.

  3. The first one is from John 3, starting at verse 16,

  4. which is so familiar to many of us.

  5. So John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  6. Starting at verse 16.

  7. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son,

  8. that whoever believes in him should not perish,

  9. but have eternal life.

  10. For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world,

  11. but in order that the world might be saved through him.

  12. Whoever believes in him is not condemned,

  13. but whoever does not believe is condemned already,

  14. because he has not believed in the name of the only son of God.

  15. And this is the judgment.

  16. The light has come into the world,

  17. and people loved the darkness rather than the light,

  18. because their works were evil.

  19. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light

  20. and does not come to the light,

  21. lest his works should be exposed.

  22. But whoever does what is true comes to the light,

  23. so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.

  24. Now we're going to turn to our second reading,

  25. which is in Colossians chapter 1, starting at verse 9.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  26. Colossians 1 verse 9.

    Colossians 1:9

  27. So this letter is Paul's prayer for the Christian believers.

  28. And so from the day we heard,

  29. we have not ceased to pray for you,

  30. asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will

  31. in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,

  32. so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord,

  33. fully pleasing to him,

  34. bearing fruit in every good work

  35. and increasing in the knowledge of God,

  36. being strengthened with all power,

  37. according to his glorious might,

  38. for all endurance and patience with joy,

  39. giving thanks to the Father,

  40. who has qualified you

  41. to sharing the inheritance of the saints in light.

  42. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness

  43. and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,

  44. in whom we have redemption,

  45. the forgiveness of sins.

  46. So we're starting a new series today.

  47. As we went through Colossians last term,

  48. the elders thought there was just some key words,

  49. key concepts that just carried this whole weight

  50. of Bible truth in them

  51. that we didn't have time

  52. to pause and just look at these weighty words

  53. and understand the depth of them.

  54. So we're going to spend four weeks

  55. going back into Colossians,

  56. kind of using Colossians as a launching point

  57. into four key words,

  58. all about salvation.

  59. So this morning we will look at how bad the problem is.

  60. We're looking at the word sin

  61. and Colossians talks about the domain of darkness.

  62. Can I urge you to listen to the whole series?

  63. Today's kind of the bad news.

  64. There's good news.

  65. Please come next week.

  66. If you can't be here,

  67. then catch up on the sermons online.

  68. But next week we will look at how Jesus saves.

  69. We're going to look at the ideas of redemption and forgiveness.

  70. Then we're going to look at the effects of salvation,

  71. justification and peace,

  72. how a legal and relational standing with God is changed.

  73. And then finally we're going to look at

  74. what living a safe life essentially consists of,

  75. being united to Christ and having communion with him.

  76. So that's where we're headed.

  77. Part of the goal of this series is we need to reclaim back

  78. to Bible understanding how our culture uses some of these words.

  79. So we use the word redemption as if someone can redeem themselves

  80. by their own achievements out of any sense of shame or something.

  81. They can redeem themselves if they do.

  82. That's not the biblical idea.

  83. We need to understand what God says redemption is.

  84. Or forgiveness.

  85. We talk about forgiveness today as if it's some psychological reason for doing it,

  86. that I need to take back control,

  87. not let the other person control me any longer.

  88. It's almost lost its relational meaning today.

  89. Or today's word on sin.

  90. Today in our culture people might use it

  91. when they buy one of those thick shakes

  92. that's just covered in chocolate syrup

  93. and 14 Cadbury flakes are just poking out of it every direction

  94. and just like a sinful pleasure.

  95. Maybe we use it like that.

  96. Or the other extreme is if you call any behaviour a sin wrong,

  97. you're intolerant.

  98. You're bigoted.

  99. It's like the only sin is calling something a sin.

  100. So we need to understand what sin means

  101. because we're lost in our culture today.

  102. But these key words of salvation,

  103. sin and redemption, forgiveness, justification, peace, union with Christ,

  104. they are so crucial to knowing God.

  105. They're crucial to understanding people

  106. and the brokenness in our world.

  107. They are crucial to possessing eternal life ourselves

  108. and they're crucial for seeking life for other people.

  109. So I hope you look forward to this series

  110. and really this series is going to be scratching the surface as well.

  111. We're always going deeper in understanding this.

  112. Well first I think we need to ask the question

  113. salvation from what exactly?

  114. You've probably been reading the news

  115. and this year is the 20th anniversary of the Bali bombings

  116. that killed over 200 people, 88 Australians included.

  117. And that's not to mention those who survived

  118. and had painful skin grafts

  119. and painful physiotherapy

  120. and the pain of survivors' guilt.

  121. And I was listening to the Triple J hack program

  122. and a survivor named Mitch was being interviewed

  123. and he was asked how he felt about one of the bombers

  124. is, it looks like, about to be released on parole

  125. having been rehabilitated.

  126. And he was asked has justice been served?

  127. He said it made his blood boil.

  128. This guy who tore families apart is about to be free.

  129. It made his blood boil.

  130. He said it wasn't about rehabilitation.

  131. He deserves punishment.

  132. He even said of other bombers

  133. who have been judicially executed for their crimes,

  134. he said they got off lightly.

  135. Others had to suffer.

  136. They didn't have such a swift and humane death.

  137. They got off lightly.

  138. It's heavy, isn't it?

  139. All the talk today of live and let live,

  140. of tolerance,

  141. as if there's no moral code

  142. in the fabric of the universe,

  143. but there's still plenty of talk of justice.

  144. It isn't just justice ingrained in us as human beings.

  145. I've never met anyone who doesn't care about justice.

  146. A fair and unfair,

  147. being proud and ashamed,

  148. right and wrong.

  149. We all want good to triumph over evil.

  150. Even as a culture today,

  151. why else would the Marvel Avengers series be so popular?

  152. We want good to triumph.

  153. Why do teenagers read thousands of pages of Harry Potter?

  154. How do you get a teenager to read that much?

  155. Because we want good to triumph over evil.

  156. We care about justice.

  157. And Christianity has a coherent reason

  158. why we care about justice so much.

  159. It's because there's a moral character

  160. who created this world,

  161. who created us in his image to be moral agents.

  162. There's that beating heart

  163. behind this world.

  164. Those Bali bombers

  165. will stand before their maker,

  166. their moral maker,

  167. one day.

  168. And they will receive final,

  169. eternal,

  170. divine justice.

  171. The Bible warns,

  172. it is a dreadful thing

  173. to fall into the hands of the living God.

  174. I wouldn't want to be them

  175. on that final day of judgment.

  176. Now there's more to salvation

  177. that we're going to hear about next week

  178. and in particular

  179. when we look at the idea of redemption.

  180. But the Bible talks about

  181. the main thing people need salvation from

  182. is this eternal,

  183. final,

  184. divine justice

  185. of God,

  186. of our maker.

  187. So who else?

  188. Who else,

  189. besides these Bali bombers,

  190. is in danger of God's

  191. final justice

  192. and why?

  193. Well,

  194. throughout the Bible,

  195. both in the Old Testament

  196. and the New Testament,

  197. the most common word to use

  198. to describe the human problem

  199. is sin.

  200. And remembering that sin

  201. is not some indulgent pleasure,

  202. nor is it reserved

  203. just for the worst criminals.

  204. Sin has a meaning

  205. along the lines of

  206. failing to hit the mark

  207. or falling short

  208. of the standard.

  209. I think we can all

  210. easily understand

  211. this concept

  212. of falling short

  213. of the standard.

  214. Just think about

  215. your own standards

  216. for yourself

  217. that you've made up.

  218. Are you

  219. the character,

  220. are you the person

  221. you want to be?

  222. I pause there

  223. because I don't think

  224. we like to pause

  225. and ask that question,

  226. do we?

  227. It's an uncomfortable

  228. question.

  229. Our inner lawyer

  230. might quickly

  231. try and justify

  232. ourselves

  233. by thinking

  234. morality is on

  235. a bell curve

  236. that,

  237. kind of like

  238. school grades

  239. where there are

  240. just the worst

  241. of the worst

  242. like the Bali bombers

  243. down one end

  244. and yes,

  245. there's a few

  246. exceptions.

  247. There's some

  248. truly altruistic

  249. people out there

  250. but the majority

  251. are shades of grey.

  252. We're somewhere

  253. in between.

  254. As long as we're

  255. in that bell curve,

  256. we're good people,

  257. right?

  258. Maybe if we're

  259. ahead of most,

  260. we should be

  261. pretty safe.

  262. We're good people,

  263. aren't we?

  264. But that

  265. horizontal comparison

  266. isn't justice

  267. and we all know it.

  268. This one exam

  269. at uni,

  270. the majority

  271. of the class

  272. failed the exam

  273. and I was one

  274. of them

  275. and all the

  276. students were

  277. just fuming

  278. at the teacher

  279. that he'd set

  280. the exam

  281. too hard.

  282. But he didn't

  283. test us on

  284. anything that we

  285. hadn't covered

  286. in the course.

  287. The test might

  288. have been hard

  289. but we just

  290. all failed.

  291. That's just

  292. what happened.

  293. We would rather

  294. be outraged

  295. at the teacher

  296. than to admit

  297. I failed.

  298. I fell short.

  299. Comparing

  300. ourselves,

  301. it doesn't

  302. justify as much

  303. as we try

  304. to make it

  305. justify ourselves.

  306. God is just.

  307. He has one

  308. standard for all

  309. people.

  310. His character

  311. is the standard.

  312. Don't compare

  313. yourself to

  314. other people.

  315. That is a

  316. twisted guide

  317. to whether

  318. you're a good

  319. person or not.

  320. When God

  321. is our standard,

  322. we have a

  323. right measure

  324. of ourselves,

  325. his character.

  326. And this isn't

  327. some arbitrary

  328. standard.

  329. When we don't

  330. share in God's

  331. character,

  332. it causes real

  333. damage to real

  334. people.

  335. It causes real

  336. damage to the

  337. world and animals

  338. that we're meant

  339. to be taken

  340. care of.

  341. And it robs

  342. God of the

  343. honour he

  344. deserves.

  345. It causes real

  346. damage.

  347. Just consider

  348. our closest

  349. relationships.

  350. Why are

  351. relationships so

  352. hard to

  353. maintain?

  354. Why is

  355. trust,

  356. full trust,

  357. so hard to

  358. maintain and

  359. it's broken

  360. so quickly?

  361. Why is full

  362. intimacy, even

  363. in our closest

  364. relationships,

  365. so hard to

  366. keep?

  367. why, if

  368. we're all

  369. good people?

  370. And we

  371. also have to

  372. take into

  373. account,

  374. that's just the

  375. horizontal

  376. relationships,

  377. how are we

  378. relating to

  379. God?

  380. Our words and

  381. our actions to

  382. God, do our

  383. lips give him

  384. the praise he

  385. deserves for his

  386. power and his

  387. goodness?

  388. goodness.

  389. When he speaks

  390. in his word, do

  391. we listen

  392. carefully?

  393. When we know

  394. his commands, do

  395. we obey

  396. gladly?

  397. We've got to

  398. consider how we

  399. relate to God

  400. too.

  401. So who else is

  402. in danger of

  403. divine justice?

  404. Here's God's

  405. conclusion in

  406. Romans 3.

  407. All have

  408. sinned and

  409. fall short of

  410. the glory of

  411. God, of the

  412. character of

  413. God.

  414. Evil words and

  415. evil acts,

  416. it's universal.

  417. And for

  418. those who

  419. misunderstand and

  420. distort

  421. Christianity,

  422. they think

  423. that the

  424. religious remedy

  425. is something

  426. like how one

  427. of my friends,

  428. when we say

  429. goodbye to

  430. each other,

  431. I'll see you

  432. later, and

  433. they respond,

  434. make good

  435. choices.

  436. It's kind of

  437. funny, it's a

  438. nice way to

  439. say goodbye,

  440. but some

  441. people think

  442. that's what

  443. Christianity is

  444. about, just

  445. make good

  446. choices, at

  447. least try to

  448. make good

  449. choices, and

  450. God will see

  451. your good

  452. intentions.

  453. But to

  454. think that

  455. God wants

  456. us to work

  457. harder, to

  458. be just more

  459. religiously

  460. fervent, to

  461. make better

  462. choices, that

  463. ignores God's

  464. diagnosis of

  465. the problem, of

  466. where this evil

  467. acts are coming

  468. from.

  469. If we're going

  470. to understand

  471. where our

  472. evil acts are

  473. coming from,

  474. we need to

  475. understand the

  476. cause, and

  477. we need God

  478. to tell us.

  479. We can't

  480. just work it

  481. out by

  482. observing how

  483. people behave.

  484. We need God

  485. to tell us, and

  486. he has told us

  487. what's going on.

  488. When the Lord

  489. scans what's

  490. happening inside

  491. of us as

  492. human beings,

  493. when he looks

  494. at our mind

  495. and our heart,

  496. and by heart

  497. the Bible

  498. means the

  499. control centre

  500. of our being,

  501. when the Lord

  502. scans us,

  503. like a medical

  504. scan, the

  505. radiation just

  506. lights up like

  507. a Christmas

  508. tree.

  509. The sickness

  510. is so deep,

  511. it has gone

  512. even to our

  513. heart, our

  514. innermost desires

  515. and our

  516. thoughts.

  517. I find

  518. Genesis 6,

    Genesis 6:5

  519. verse 5,

  520. in the days of

  521. Noah, one of

  522. the most sobering

  523. descriptions of the

  524. human condition.

  525. I even just

  526. bent my legs

  527. because I just

  528. felt, it is a

  529. weighty verse.

  530. The Lord

  531. saw that the

  532. wickedness of

  533. man was great

  534. in the earth

  535. and that every

  536. intention of

  537. the thoughts of

  538. his heart was

  539. only evil

  540. continually.

  541. Every

  542. intention of

  543. the thoughts of

  544. his heart was

  545. only evil

  546. continually.

  547. We see this

  548. in our John

  549. 3 passage that

  550. was read

  551. today.

  552. So,

  553. starting at

  554. verse 19,

  555. this is God's

  556. judgement,

  557. the light came

  558. into the world,

  559. the light,

  560. not a light,

  561. but the light,

  562. the son of

  563. God, the

  564. spotless,

  565. perfect,

  566. son of

  567. God,

  568. who's truly

  569. innocent.

  570. He came into

  571. the world.

  572. And we

  573. would expect the

  574. next bit to

  575. say, and

  576. people flocked

  577. to him.

  578. The light

  579. came and

  580. people came to

  581. him for

  582. truth.

  583. They came to

  584. him for

  585. forgiveness.

  586. They came to

  587. him for

  588. restored a

  589. relationship

  590. with God

  591. and eternal

  592. life.

  593. But that's

  594. not what the

  595. verse says.

  596. The light

  597. has come into

  598. the world and

  599. people loved

  600. the darkness.

  601. loved the

  602. darkness rather

  603. than the

  604. light because

  605. their works

  606. were evil.

  607. For everyone

  608. who does

  609. wicked things

  610. hates the

  611. light and

  612. does not

  613. come to

  614. the light

  615. lest their

  616. works should

  617. be exposed.

  618. Our very

  619. nature is

  620. rotten.

  621. We love

  622. what we

  623. should hate

  624. and we

  625. hate what

  626. we should

  627. love.

  628. Now,

  629. when the

  630. Bible says

  631. that we're

  632. kind of

  633. rotten even

  634. to our

  635. heart,

  636. it's not

  637. saying we're

  638. as bad as

  639. we possibly

  640. could be.

  641. There's lots

  642. of reasons

  643. that we

  644. don't follow

  645. through with

  646. our desires

  647. of the

  648. heart.

  649. We're not

  650. as bad as

  651. we possibly

  652. could be

  653. and thank

  654. God for

  655. that.

  656. But if

  657. the condition

  658. isn't all

  659. the way to

  660. our heart,

  661. then why

  662. would things

  663. that tempt us

  664. to do what

  665. we know is

  666. wrong,

  667. why would we

  668. find them

  669. tempting?

  670. Why would

  671. we find

  672. them appealing

  673. at all and

  674. be drawn

  675. away by

  676. them?

  677. If we

  678. hated it,

  679. even though

  680. I know

  681. it's wrong,

  682. if we

  683. hated it,

  684. we would

  685. despise it

  686. and not

  687. go anywhere

  688. near it.

  689. But we're

  690. not,

  691. or if you're

  692. anything like

  693. me, we're

  694. drawn to

  695. it.

  696. Why do

  697. we find

  698. it so

  699. tempting

  700. and get

  701. allured?

  702. I've got

  703. to admit

  704. that something

  705. in me loves

  706. it.

  707. even though

  708. I know

  709. it's

  710. wrong.

  711. Something

  712. in me

  713. loves

  714. it.

  715. I want

  716. to give

  717. an example

  718. of this

  719. and that's

  720. always

  721. dangerous,

  722. but this is

  723. just one

  724. concrete

  725. example to

  726. illustrate.

  727. Recently,

  728. there was

  729. this material

  730. possession that

  731. I was just

  732. obsessed with

  733. and I

  734. wanted it.

  735. I really

  736. wanted it.

  737. Emma thought

  738. it was just

  739. a bad idea

  740. and she

  741. kept telling

  742. me that.

  743. I didn't

  744. listen to

  745. her.

  746. I just

  747. wanted it

  748. and we

  749. went away

  750. on holidays

  751. even and

  752. I was

  753. researching

  754. about it

  755. and it

  756. ruined the

  757. holiday because

  758. I just wanted

  759. this thing and

  760. I didn't have

  761. it and my

  762. mind just kept

  763. going to it

  764. instead of

  765. being present

  766. and just

  767. relaxing.

  768. It ruined

  769. my holiday.

  770. Not to

  771. mention whatever

  772. non-attention I

  773. gave to Emma

  774. and Sam,

  775. but I was

  776. just obsessed.

  777. Now,

  778. the problem

  779. there wasn't

  780. just,

  781. I couldn't,

  782. in my head I

  783. was telling

  784. myself choose

  785. something else,

  786. stop thinking

  787. about it.

  788. That didn't

  789. work.

  790. Why?

  791. Because I

  792. think my

  793. heart loved

  794. it.

  795. I found

  796. it appealing.

  797. I wanted

  798. it.

  799. I coveted

  800. it is the

  801. biblical word

  802. for it.

  803. The condition

  804. there was a

  805. problem with

  806. my love of

  807. my heart.

  808. I needed

  809. to love

  810. something else

  811. more.

  812. Now,

  813. that description,

  814. do you find

  815. that evil?

  816. Is evil

  817. really the

  818. right word

  819. for that?

  820. Darkness

  821. that Colossians

  822. uses,

  823. the domain

  824. of darkness,

  825. the rule

  826. of something

  827. ruling you,

  828. domain is

  829. about rule,

  830. it's about

  831. jurisdiction,

  832. something like

  833. coveting some

  834. material possession,

  835. is that darkness?

  836. compared to

  837. Bali bombers,

  838. are we going

  839. to call that

  840. darkness?

  841. Well,

  842. what is

  843. darkness?

  844. I think when

  845. the Bible talks

  846. about darkness,

  847. it's not living

  848. according to the

  849. truth.

  850. It's not living

  851. in light of the

  852. truth.

  853. And if we just

  854. stick with the

  855. coveting example,

  856. people,

  857. it's totally at

  858. odds with

  859. reality.

  860. It's as if

  861. this thing

  862. will give me

  863. life and

  864. security and

  865. meaning and

  866. value,

  867. if I had it,

  868. rather than

  869. God.

  870. The Bible uses

  871. the word

  872. idolatry.

  873. We look to

  874. everything else

  875. besides God

  876. to give us

  877. life and

  878. blessing.

  879. That's just

  880. not true.

  881. It's not how

  882. God created

  883. the world.

  884. I was

  885. obsessing about

  886. it as if I

  887. could bring it

  888. about.

  889. That's not

  890. true.

  891. I'm not in

  892. control.

  893. God decides

  894. what happens.

  895. Even that's

  896. not true.

  897. It's not even

  898. true to the

  899. level of what

  900. life is

  901. essentially

  902. about.

  903. It's not

  904. about gain.

  905. it's about

  906. gift.

  907. God created

  908. this world as

  909. a gift for

  910. us to know

  911. him at the

  912. centre.

  913. Do you see

  914. how that

  915. coveting is

  916. in darkness.

  917. It is not

  918. according to

  919. truth.

  920. God isn't at

  921. the centre.

  922. Our heart is

  923. ruled by what

  924. we think will

  925. give us life

  926. and if it's

  927. anything other

  928. than God,

  929. then we are

  930. ruled by

  931. darkness.

  932. It is

  933. controlling our

  934. heart and

  935. that's why

  936. those evil

  937. words and

  938. evil choices

  939. flow out of

  940. that heart.

  941. There's another

  942. level we can

  943. go here.

  944. We've got our

  945. evil words and

  946. behaviour which

  947. is flowing out

  948. of a heart

  949. that isn't

  950. looking to

  951. God for life

  952. or to

  953. anything else.

  954. sin.

  955. There's

  956. something

  957. fundamental

  958. about what

  959. sin is.

  960. There's a

  961. fundamental

  962. lie that

  963. we have all

  964. believed.

  965. This lie

  966. was at the

  967. beginning,

  968. the first

  969. human beings.

  970. It is the

  971. lie that you

  972. can be like

  973. God.

  974. God.

  975. I'm going to

  976. borrow from

  977. theologian and

  978. author J.I.

  979. Packer.

  980. Here's how he

  981. defines sin.

  982. Here's how he

  983. defines the

  984. root issue of

  985. sin.

  986. What is the

  987. essence of

  988. sin?

  989. Playing

  990. God and as a

  991. means to this,

  992. refusing to allow

  993. the creator to

  994. be God as

  995. far as you

  996. are concerned,

  997. living not for

  998. him before

  999. yourself, loving

  1000. and serving and

  1001. pleasing yourself

  1002. without reference to

  1003. the creator,

  1004. trying to be as

  1005. far as possible

  1006. independent of

  1007. him, taking

  1008. yourself out of

  1009. his hands,

  1010. holding him at

  1011. arm's length,

  1012. keeping the

  1013. reins of life in

  1014. your own hands,

  1015. acting as if you

  1016. and your pleasure

  1017. were the end to

  1018. which all else,

  1019. God included,

  1020. must be made to

  1021. function as a

  1022. means.

  1023. That is the

  1024. attitude in

  1025. which sin

  1026. essentially

  1027. consists.

  1028. He's just

  1029. describing there

  1030. that lie we've

  1031. all taken in,

  1032. that we can be

  1033. God, that we

  1034. can control our

  1035. lives, that we

  1036. can determine what

  1037. will bless our

  1038. lives.

  1039. It's playing

  1040. God.

  1041. God.

  1042. This idea of

  1043. being in

  1044. control, of

  1045. playing God, I

  1046. think explains why

  1047. a very religious

  1048. person, very

  1049. religious person,

  1050. is still

  1051. fundamentally sick

  1052. in the heart.

  1053. God.

  1054. Because trying to

  1055. prove yourself to

  1056. God, for him to

  1057. approve of you

  1058. based on what you

  1059. have done, is

  1060. really saying to

  1061. God, you owe me.

  1062. I jumped through

  1063. all your hoops, I

  1064. did the prayers, I

  1065. did the giving of

  1066. money, I listened to

  1067. countless sermons, I

  1068. did the pilgrimage, I

  1069. did the meditation, now

  1070. you owe me.

  1071. You can't ask any

  1072. more from me.

  1073. Give me what I

  1074. deserve.

  1075. Can you hear how

  1076. that is still trying

  1077. to keep control?

  1078. It's still seeking

  1079. blessing outside of

  1080. God as well.

  1081. Not seeing God

  1082. himself as the

  1083. blessing, but as a

  1084. means to the

  1085. blessing.

  1086. If I do what

1087. you tell me to do,

  1088. God, then you

  1089. owe me.

  1090. It's trying to stay

  1091. in control.

  1092. The religious

  1093. attempt at playing

1094. God is as much in

  1095. darkness as someone

  1096. who just brazenly is

  1097. self-centred.

  1098. The difference is

  1099. you're religiously

  1100. self-centred.

  1101. So who is in

  1102. danger of God's

  1103. divine justice and

  1104. why?

  1105. All who have a

  1106. sick heart, who

  1107. think they can

  1108. play God, stay in

  1109. control of their

  1110. lives, who then

  1111. their heart is

  1112. driven by

  1113. idolatry, seeking

  1114. blessing outside of

  1115. God rather than

  1116. seeing God himself

  1117. as the source of

  1118. life.

  1119. And that

  1120. expressing itself

  1121. in damaging

  1122. words and

  1123. damaging acts.

  1124. which is me,

  1125. which is you,

  1126. according to

  1127. scripture.

  1128. We need

  1129. forgiveness for

  1130. our wrong words

  1131. and behaviour,

1132. but we also need a

  1133. heart transplant.

  1134. We need a

  1135. fundamental change.

  1136. A heart not

  1137. ruled by love of

  1138. self, but ruled by

  1139. the love of God.

  1140. God.

  1141. Despite all of

  1142. our evil,

  1143. John 3.16,

  1144. for God so

  1145. loved the

  1146. world.

  1147. God so

  1148. loved the

  1149. world that he

  1150. gave his only

  1151. son, his only

  1152. son to bear that

  1153. divine final

  1154. judgment on

  1155. himself when he

  1156. breathed his

  1157. last breath nailed

  1158. to that cross.

  1159. That is

  1160. extravagant love,

  1161. is it not?

  1162. That God would

  1163. love us so much.

  1164. God would

  1165. love us so much.

  1166. How will you

  1167. respond to that

  1168. light, the

  1169. light?

  1170. Because it

  1171. confronts us.

  1172. It should have two

  1173. effects on us.

1174. I hope it has two

  1175. effects, not just

  1176. one.

  1177. Pastor Tim Keller

  1178. describes these two

  1179. effects really well.

  1180. When you see that

  1181. God's son died on

  1182. the cross to save

  1183. you from God's

  1184. justice, Tim

  1185. Keller says this.

  1186. It tells us, we

  1187. are more sinful

  1188. and flawed in

  1189. ourselves than we

  1190. ever dare

  1191. believe.

  1192. Yet at the very

  1193. same time, we

  1194. are more loved

  1195. and accepted in

  1196. Jesus Christ than

  1197. we ever dared

  1198. hope.

  1199. God's son's

  1200. God's son's

  1201. light.

  1202. God the

  1203. father calls you

  1204. to his son's

  1205. light.

  1206. Don't be afraid of

  1207. your deeds being

  1208. exposed.

  1209. You will be

  1210. exposed.

  1211. In the light of

  1212. the cross, we see

  1213. our sin more

  1214. clearly.

  1215. You will be

  1216. exposed, but you

  1217. don't need to be

  1218. afraid of that

  1219. because the

  1220. father has poured

  1221. all the justice

  1222. on his son.

  1223. It's not condemnation you'll receive.

  1224. It's salvation.

1225. All he's got left to give you is the love he has for his son.

1226. Openly confess your evil behaviour and your heart that loves everything else

1227. besides God and come and just rejoice that the Father has poured all his

1228. divine justice on his son and not you because he so loved you.

1229. If you stay hiding in the darkness, whether religiously or just living

1230. a self-centred life, it's not just the Bali bombers who should be terrified

1231. at falling into the hands of the living God.

1232. Come into the light of the cross.

1233. And you'll have all the guilt and shame washed away in the embrace of a

1234. father who just wants you to know him as an affectionate father.

  1235. Come into his light.

1236. Can I give you a minute just to do whatever you want in your own minds

1237. and hearts, whether that's praising God.

1238. If you're a Christian, just praising God afresh for his extravagant love for you

1239. or whether you've been convicted by Scripture today.

1240. Do whatever you want in your own mind and heart and then I'll pray after a minute.

  1241. Amen.

  1242. Amen.

  1243. Amen.

  1244. Amen.

  1245. Amen.

  1246. Amen.

  1247. Amen.

  1248. Amen.

  1249. Amen.

  1250. Amen.

  1251. Amen.

  1252. Amen.

  1253. Amen.

  1254. Amen.

  1255. Speaker 5

  1256. shining 7

  1257. Yea."

  1258. Amen.

  1259. Amen.

  1260. Amen.

  1261. Amen.

  1262. Amen.

  1263. Amen.

  1264. Amen.

  1265. Amen.

  1266. Amen.

  1267. Amen.

  1268. Amen.

  1269. Amen.

1270. Father, help each one of us to come to you as we are,

1271. to be humbled and exposed by the light of your cross.

1272. And then, Lord, I pray that you might fill us each with a profound sense of thankfulness

1273. for your pure grace and love that would even give your own son

1274. to make us wretches, your sons and daughters.

1275. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
