  1. Well, do you think forgiveness is important and good?

  2. Sounds like a pretty obvious question.

  3. I know it's probably not gripping you yet,

  4. but perhaps your mind is already starting to work out

  5. when forgiveness isn't good.

  6. Like, is there a frequency limit?

  7. They have done the same thing again.

  8. I can't forgive.

  9. Or is there a severity limit?

  10. They've caused me way too much pain.

  11. They don't deserve forgiveness.

  12. Or are there other conditions?

  13. Like forgiveness is given for as long as the relationship is going well,

  14. but if it's starting to break down, you can call in past hurts

  15. and bring them to the surface again.

  16. Or when has forgiveness actually occurred?

  17. When you no longer engage in the fight,

  18. but you still decide to avoid that person for the rest of your life?

  19. Or when trust and intimacy and affection even starts to be rebuilt?

  20. Well, what do people even mean by the idea of forgiveness?

  21. Roughly speaking, everyone has some idea that forgiveness is no longer seeking justice

  22. or revenge on the person who has wronged you.

  23. But is forgiveness something that can only happen between two people

  24. where forgiveness is offered and received,

  25. or is forgiveness something that can happen just in your own mind?

  26. I think it's more common to hear today that forgiveness is something you can do by yourself in your own mind.

  27. The top Google result, I know that doesn't bring much authority with it,

  28. top Google result.

  29. But then again, people do go to Google for direction in life, don't they?

  30. What is forgiveness?

  31. Forgiveness, it goes to a health organisation and it says, among other things, says this,

  32. forgiveness can help free you from the control of the person who harms you.

  33. Do you see the motivation there?

  34. It's to free you from the control.

  35. It goes on to say, and I agree with this bit,

  36. forgiveness doesn't mean forgetting or excusing the harm done.

  37. I definitely agree with that.

  38. I don't agree with this next bit.

  39. Forgiveness doesn't mean making up with the person who caused the harm.

  40. Forgiveness brings a kind of peace,

  41. talking about your peace, inner peace,

  42. that helps you get on with life.

  43. That's a common view of forgiveness these days.

  44. Or do you wish I stopped asking these questions?

  45. Are you sick of these questions?

  46. This simple topic of forgiveness is starting to unravel.

  47. People have so many different ideas of what it means

  48. and so many different ways of practising it.

  49. When people say all is forgiven, how forgiven is that?

  50. What do they mean?

  51. It's really hard to know.

  52. And I realise, I'm skimming, I'm just bypassing so many other aspects

  53. that we're not looking at today.

  54. Like the difference between genuinely forgiving but still requiring real consequences for actions.

  55. We're not going to touch on that.

  56. Or the need to rebuild trust over time.

  57. Or the fact that sometimes you can have the desire to forgive in your heart,

  58. but the person has passed away or they are unwilling to talk to you.

  59. So there's a difference there as well, an attitude of forgiveness.

  60. Just leaving all that to the side.

  61. The main thing I want to focus on today,

  62. and the point of this whole series of key words of salvation,

  63. what we need to get straight today in our mind is,

  64. what does God mean by forgiveness?

  65. When he says all is forgiven, what does God mean by that?

  66. When people say it, it's really hard to know.

  67. But what does God mean by that?

  68. That is, we need to know what he means.

  69. How forgiven is that?

  70. So we're up to the third of four sermons in this series on salvation.

  71. We've looked at the problem in the first week,

  72. sin, that all of us do evil things and evil words come out of our mouths.

  73. And the Bible says that's because our heart has a problem.

  74. We look for life outside of God.

  75. It's called idolatry.

  76. We look for other things to give us life.

  77. Fundamental to all that is we think we can rule our lives better than God can.

  78. We can play God.

  79. So our heart problem, which expresses itself in evil behaviour,

  80. it deserves God's judgement and his anger, his eternal wrath.

  81. That's the problem.

  82. But last week we saw the solution.

  83. Redemption, what God has done.

  84. Like a prisoner of war, captive in our sin.

  85. He has bought our freedom.

  86. If God wants us back home, he had to pay the price.

  87. And he did.

  88. The blood of his son.

  89. We are not captive anymore.

  90. We are now at home.

  91. Restored relationship to God.

  92. Today we're looking at the result of that redemption.

  93. What is the result?

  94. And the Bible terms for that is justification and peace.

  95. So when God says all is forgiven, how forgiven is that?

  96. So let's get into this word justification.

  97. And you're going to notice that this series in Colossians really is just a launching point.

  98. I'm spending our time in Romans today looking at, but the idea is there in Colossians.

  99. I think it says it just a little bit clearer in Romans.

  100. So justification.

  101. It's a legal picture.

  102. We looked at redemption last week.

  103. Redemption pictures our captivity as slaves to sin being set free at a price.

  104. Whereas justification, it pictures the final day of judgment.

  105. When each of us, we're told, have to give an account for our lives.

  106. We're in the cosmic courtroom at the end of our lives with God presiding on the bench.

  107. And Jesus says that we're going to have to give an account for our whole lives,

  108. even every careless word that comes out of our mouth, even the ones in secret.

  109. Our whole lives.

  110. I remember this one time when I was a youth, I made the whole youth group laugh.

  111. I said this joke and I made the whole youth group laugh.

  112. And I was enjoying my joke, all the laughter.

  113. But then my eyes locked onto one person whose look on his face just cut me.

  114. I knew that that word was really disparaging of another person.

  115. Everyone else was laughing.

  116. One person just goes, oof.

  117. I still remember it.

  118. For some reason, it's stuck with me.

  119. I'm not going to tell you what that word was.

  120. I've got you all curious now.

  121. And whenever I make these comments, my parents call me up every week,

  122. what were you referring to?

  123. You don't need to know right now.

  124. You'll find out on the day of judgment.

  125. You'll hear it then.

  126. Every careless word.

  127. I've got a lot of careless words.

  128. So picture the courtroom.

  129. All the evidence brought in.

  130. All of it.

  131. And there's only two verdicts.

  132. Guilty.

  133. Righteous.

  134. Depart from me forever.

  135. Come, enter your master's joy.

  136. Now, the reason we need to...

  137. I'm not sure if you find that picture impersonal of God.

  138. But despite the fact that the Bible talks a lot about justification,

  139. the reason we need to understand this image is because of who God is at heart,

  140. who he is in his character.

  141. Because God is completely righteous.

  142. He is just.

  143. God is so reliable.

  144. He only ever acts according to what is right.

  145. Unlike anyone else you know, you can count on God to be totally just.

  146. And hopefully you're starting to feel the problem that that's a terrifying prospect.

  147. If you think of God and the question in your mind is,

  148. how can a loving God not forgive me?

  149. That is a wrong starting point for thinking about God.

  150. You've got to start with who he is, his justice.

  151. How can a good, just God forgive me?

  152. That's the right question.

  153. How can the God who said in Proverbs 17, 15,

  154. he who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous

  155. are both alike an abomination to the Lord.

  156. How can the God who said that in his courtroom declare me,

  157. a guilty person, righteous, forgiven?

  158. If the problem hasn't been clear enough,

  159. I'm going to use the imagery from the prophet Micah.

  160. Listen to what Micah says.

  161. Hear what the Lord says.

  162. Arise.

  163. Picture that courtroom.

  164. Arise.

  165. Plead your case before the mountains,

  166. the mountains that were there since the beginning,

  167. so they've observed it all.

  168. Let the hills hear your voice.

  169. Hear, you mountains, the indictment of the Lord

  170. and you enduring foundations of the earth,

  171. for the Lord has an indictment against his people.

  172. And then Micah responds a few paragraphs later.

  173. With what shall I come before the Lord

  174. and bow myself before God on high?

  175. Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,

  176. with calves a year old?

  177. Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,

  178. with ten thousands of rivers of oil?

  179. Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression,

  180. the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

  181. If God is to forgive you,

  182. if he is to acquit you of all guilt,

  183. he has to do it in a righteous way.

  184. He's got to do it in a just way because that's who he is.

  185. And that's the good news of Romans 3,

  186. of all of Scripture,

  187. but Romans 3 just says it so succinctly and clearly,

  188. unlike me.

  189. But can you turn to Romans 3,

  190. if you're following in your Bibles?

  191. I know I've had two passages previous weeks

  192. and you're probably not sure where I'm going,

  193. so today we're sticking in Romans 3,

  194. from verse 21.

  195. Just before we read some of these verses,

  196. how would you feel if you met King David,

  197. who lived a thousand years before Christ?

  198. Israel's greatest king.

  199. How would you feel in his presence,

  200. as you go to shake King David's hand?

  201. Would you just be like shaking

  202. because you're in the presence of this great man?

  203. Or would you even shake his hand?

  204. This man who took Bathsheba in his lust

  205. and then plotted the murder of Uriah,

  206. could you shake his hand?

  207. I don't know,

  208. does it matter how remorseful he was?

  209. How could a just God say to King David,

  210. and he did,

  211. through the prophet Nathan,

  212. the Lord has put away your sin.

  213. You shall not die.

  214. How can a just God say that?

  215. That's scandalous.

  216. Romans 3 tells us how.

  217. Romans 3,

  218. I'm going to start reading from verse 23.

  219. For all have sinned

  220. and fall short of the glory of God

  221. and are justified,

  222. declared righteous,

  223. by his grace as a gift,

  224. through the redemption

  225. that is in Christ Jesus,

  226. whom God put forward

  227. as a propitiation by his blood

  228. to be received by faith.

  229. This was to show God's righteousness

  230. because in his divine forbearance,

  231. forbearance he had passed over former sins.

  232. It was to show his righteousness

  233. at the present time

  234. so that he might be just

  235. and the justifier

  236. of the one who has faith in Jesus.

  237. God put away David's sin,

  238. not by sweeping it under the rug,

  239. but by placing his sin on his son

  240. who paid the penalty.

  241. So many religions claim

  242. to provide a way to be forgiven,

  243. whether it's praying to ancestral spirits,

  244. ceremonial washings in water,

  245. building shrines to Buddha,

  246. a pilgrimage to Mecca,

  247. going again and again and again

  248. to a human priest

  249. and eating the mass

  250. to pay for your sins,

  251. or as secular Australians say,

  252. to forgive yourself.

  253. The question is,

  254. do any of these

  255. claims of forgiveness,

  256. do they deal with it justly?

  257. Is the penalty actually paid?

  258. It's not.

  259. None of these ways

  260. clear the conscience.

  261. They don't work.

  262. And there's a reason it doesn't work,

  263. because they don't deal with sin

  264. in a just way.

  265. When God says all is forgiven,

  266. the sins are actually dealt with.

  267. They're actually paid for.

  268. Not by you,

  269. but by his son.

  270. Only in Jesus

  271. is all your sin forgiven.

  272. Now, I've got the privilege

  273. in a few weeks

  274. to preside over the marriage

  275. of Zach and Caitlin.

  276. You're probably nervous

  277. now that I'm putting

  278. the spotlight on you.

  279. Now,

  280. during the marriage ceremony,

  281. when it's done legally

  282. and righteously,

  283. in the eyes of the state

  284. and more importantly,

  285. in the eyes of God,

  286. now I've got the privilege

  287. of making this

  288. very profound statement.

  289. I pronounce you

  290. husband and wife.

  291. That doesn't count.

  292. All right?

  293. It's not yet.

  294. Not yet.

  295. All right?

  296. Now,

  297. people are so focused

  298. on the next bit.

  299. You can kiss the bride,

  300. and I'm sure, Zach,

  301. it's going to be kissing

  302. for the first time, right?

  303. Everyone's waiting

  304. for that moment.

  305. But more profound

  306. is that statement.

  307. And I get to say it.

  308. I pronounce you

  309. husband and wife.

  310. Before I say that,

  311. Zach is Zach,

  312. Caitlin is Caitlin.

  313. But in saying those words,

  314. the very words,

  315. changes your reality.

  316. You are now one flesh

  317. because of those words,

  318. that declaration.

  319. You're not individuals anymore.

  320. You're one flesh.

  321. That pronouncement

  322. changes you.

  323. Do you hear what

  324. Romans 3 is saying?

  325. That future verdict,

  326. righteous or guilty,

  327. that declaration of righteous

  328. is now in the past.

  329. The declaration changes you.

  330. You are righteous.

  331. You are completely changed

  332. at that point

  333. through this pronouncement

  334. that has occurred

  335. when Jesus rose

  336. from the dead.

  337. You are righteous.

  338. All your sin

  339. has been transferred

  340. to Jesus.

  341. He paid the penalty.

  342. All his righteousness,

  343. the life of obedience,

  344. is transferred

  345. to your account.

  346. When God looks at you,

  347. he sees Jesus.

  348. Righteous.

  349. The verdict of the future

  350. is already in the past.

  351. It's done.

  352. When God says,

  353. justify it,

  354. all is forgiven,

  355. he means it.

  356. Unlike everyone else,

  357. he means it.

  358. Today apparently

  359. is the anniversary

  360. of Martin Luther,

  361. the father of the,

  362. is he the father

  363. of Protestant?

  364. I should probably know

  365. that as a pastor.

  366. Anyway,

  367. he nailed the 95 theses

  368. on that door.

  369. This is the anniversary,

  370. but for those

  371. who don't know

  372. the story of Luther,

  373. Martin Luther,

  374. he was a Catholic monk

  375. before that.

  376. And he annoyed

  377. his superiors

  378. because he would just

  379. be in the confessional

  380. for hours.

  381. His superiors are like,

  382. you're confessing piccadillos.

  383. I don't know,

  384. it's an old-fashioned term,

  385. but he was so burdened

  386. by his sin

  387. that every day

  388. he would be spending

  389. hours confessing

  390. every single sin.

  391. He was so tormented

  392. by this idea

  393. of a just God.

  394. Here's how he put it.

  395. I had hoped

  396. I might find

  397. peace of conscience

  398. with the fast,

  399. going without food,

  400. and the prayer

  401. and the vigils

  402. with which I miserably

  403. afflicted my body.

  404. But the more

  405. I sweated it out

  406. like this,

  407. the less peace

  408. and tranquility

  409. I knew.

  410. And it was this passage,

  411. Roman 3,

  412. that changed everything

  413. and opened his eyes.

  414. This is how he put it,

  415. his famous paragraph.

  416. Thereupon,

  417. I felt myself

  418. to be reborn

  419. and have gone through

  420. open doors

  421. into paradise.

  422. Now the whole of Scripture

  423. took on a new meaning

  424. and whereas before

  425. the justice of God

  426. had filled me with hate,

  427. now it became to me

  428. inexpressibly sweet

  429. in greater love.

  430. This passage of Paul

  431. became to me

  432. as a gate

  433. into paradise.

  434. Because before

  435. he was trying to earn

  436. his righteousness

  437. righteousness

  438. and now

  439. he understood

  440. it's a gift.

  441. It's a gate

  442. of paradise.

  443. But this gift

  444. of being declared

  445. righteous,

  446. it's not automatically

  447. applied to everyone.

  448. It's only for those

  449. with faith

  450. and not just any

  451. religious faith

  452. but a very specific faith

  453. as verse 26 says.

  454. God is just

  455. and the justifier

  456. of the one

  457. who has faith

  458. in Jesus.

  459. Now

  460. this faith,

  461. it doesn't,

  462. faith isn't just

  463. a lowering of the bar.

  464. He tried,

  465. it's not as if

  466. God tried the law

  467. with Israel

  468. and they just

  469. failed at the law

  470. because,

  471. okay,

  472. at least

  473. try a bit,

  474. try and have some faith.

  475. That's not what's

  476. happening here.

  477. Faith is not

  478. a merit.

  479. It's not

  480. saying you do.

  481. It's a receiving thing.

  482. Even our faith

  483. is a gift.

  484. And Romans chapter 4

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  485. clearly demonstrates

  486. this with the life

  487. of Abraham

  488. that God

  489. is always,

  490. not just post-Christ

  491. but always

  492. since Abraham

  493. has counted

  494. a person righteous

  495. not based on

  496. what they do

  497. but on their faith

  498. in God's promise.

  499. So in chapter 4

  500. of Romans

  501. he quotes

  502. Genesis 15, 6

  503. Abraham believed God

  504. and it was counted

  505. to him

  506. as righteousness.

  507. It's always been

  508. by faith.

  509. So what is faith?

  510. Faith is taking

  511. God at his word

  512. despite all

  513. the evidence

  514. that makes it

  515. seem impossible.

  516. It's taking

  517. God at his word

  518. and we see this

  519. in the life

  520. of Abraham

  521. in chapter 4.

  522. We see it

  523. described

  524. from verse 17

  525. onwards.

  526. Paul is saying

  527. picture Abraham.

  528. What was going on

  529. in Genesis 15?

  530. What was happening

  531. in the life

  532. of Abraham?

  533. Well Abraham

  534. was about

  535. 100 years old.

  536. His wife

  537. in the 90s

  538. never had a child.

  539. They had no

  540. heir

  541. to inherit

  542. their name,

  543. to inherit

  544. all the promises

  545. God had given

  546. that he would be

  547. a blessing

  548. to the whole world

  549. and the land

  550. and all the promises.

  551. They had no heir

  552. to keep going

  553. in those promises.

  554. Now that must have

  555. been incredibly painful,

  556. just a hopeless

  557. situation.

  558. How would they

  559. have a child?

  560. But,

  561. verse 17,

  562. Abraham knew

  563. who God was.

  564. He's the God

  565. who gives life

  566. to the dead

  567. and calls

  568. into existence

  569. the things

  570. that do not

  571. exist.

  572. So when God

  573. showed Abraham

  574. all the stars

  575. in the sky

  576. and said,

  577. so shall

  578. your offspring be.

  579. I love this

  580. phrase in here,

  581. in verse 18,

  582. in hope

  583. he believed

  584. against hope.

  585. What a beautiful

  586. description of faith.

  587. In hope

  588. in what God

  589. promised to do,

  590. he believed

  591. against hope

  592. in anything

  593. he could do.

  594. That's the

  595. description of faith.

  596. It seems impossible.

  597. He looked at

  598. all the evidence.

  599. There is no way

  600. we can have an heir.

  601. But God said,

  602. so shall it be.

  603. And he took him

  604. at his word.

  605. That's faith.

  606. And it's God's word

  607. that creates

  608. the faith.

  609. I'm not going

  610. to add to that.

  611. If you want to

  612. know what I mean,

  613. come talk to me

  614. later.

  615. Now,

  616. as you weigh up

  617. the evidence

  618. of your life,

  619. think of all,

  620. think of your life

  621. and whether you'll

  622. be counted

  623. righteous or not.

  624. Look at,

  625. let's bring all

  626. the evidence in.

  627. All your regret,

  628. those big sins

  629. that you just

  630. can't forget,

  631. all the

  632. half-hearted

  633. worship,

  634. all the lack

  635. of compassion

  636. for people,

  637. all the inconsistency

  638. of your zeal

  639. for living for Christ,

  640. all the feelings

  641. of guilt and shame,

  642. even how weak

  643. you feel your faith is.

  644. It feels like

  645. a flame that is

  646. flickering,

  647. barely burning

  648. sometimes.

  649. All that evidence

  650. says impossible

  651. for you to be

  652. forgiven.

  653. But God says

  654. justified.

  655. Faith is to

  656. take God

  657. at his word.

  658. In hope,

  659. believe against

  660. hope.

  661. It's not the

  662. strength of your

  663. faith that matters.

  664. It's the strength

  665. of the one you

  666. have faith in.

  667. That's everything.

  668. Now,

  669. I think I'm

  670. borrowing from

  671. Carson here

  672. this next

  673. thought experiment

  674. to describe

  675. that it's

  676. all the

  677. faith of the

  678. one.

  679. It's not

  680. about how

  681. strong your

  682. faith is.

  683. So imagine

  684. in Egypt

  685. in the

  686. Passover,

  687. they hear

  688. through Moses

  689. that God

  690. is going to

  691. come and

  692. kill the

  693. firstborn

  694. throughout

  695. Egypt.

  696. And two

  697. neighbouring

  698. Israelite

  699. families hear

  700. this message

  701. and they hear

  702. the message

  703. that you need

  704. to sacrifice

  705. a spotless

  706. lamb and

  707. paint the

  708. doorway of

  709. your house

  710. in its

  711. blood.

  712. Now,

  713. one father

  714. is just

  715. full of joy

  716. and sacrifices

  717. the lamb

  718. in thanksgiving

  719. to God

  720. and paints

  721. the doorway

  722. and sits

  723. down and

  724. enjoys the

  725. meal at

  726. ease with

  727. the family

  728. knowing that

  729. God will

  730. keep his

  731. word and

  732. goes to

  733. sleep knowing

  734. that they

  735. can trust

  736. that God

  737. will do

  738. what he

  739. promises.

  740. He can

  741. look into

  742. the eyes

  743. of his

  744. ten-year-old

  745. son and

  746. go,

  747. I'll see

  748. you in

  749. the morning.

  750. But then

  751. next door

  752. another

  753. father is

  754. just full

  755. of dread.

  756. Maybe his

  757. own guilt

  758. is coming

  759. up and

  760. he does

  761. do the

  762. sacrifice

  763. of the

  764. lamb.

  765. He paints

  766. the doorway

  767. but he

  768. cannot

  769. eat.

  770. He cannot

  771. sleep.

  772. He looks

  773. at his

  774. ten-year-old

  775. son and

  776. he's just

  777. watching the

  778. chest going

  779. up and

  780. down.

  781. Is God

  782. going to

  783. keep his

  784. word?

  785. Now,

  786. both will

  787. be saved

  788. in the

  789. morning

  790. because it

  791. doesn't matter

  792. about the

  793. strength of

  794. your faith.

  795. It matters

  796. that God

  797. keeps his

  798. word.

  799. When he

  800. offers a

  801. sacrifice in

  802. Jesus,

  803. he will

  804. keep his

  805. word.

  806. That's all

  807. that counts.

  808. When God

  809. says all

  810. is forgiven

  811. by faith in

  812. Jesus,

  813. he means

  814. it.

  815. he means

  816. it.

  817. So let's

  818. spend our

  819. remaining

  820. minutes just

  821. looking at

  822. a passage

  823. that was

  824. read in

  825. Romans 5,

  826. just looking

  827. at how

  828. much he

  829. means it.

  830. So Romans

    Romans 5:1

  831. 5 verse 1,

  832. therefore,

  833. since we

  834. have been

  835. justified by

  836. faith,

  837. we have

  838. peace with

  839. God through

  840. our Lord

  841. Jesus Christ.

  842. peace isn't

  843. here about

  844. an inner

  845. feeling of

  846. tranquility.

  847. Peace here

  848. is a

  849. relational

  850. term.

  851. We are no

  852. longer enemies.

  853. We're not

  854. trying to rule

  855. our lives

  856. anymore.

  857. We are

  858. reconciled,

  859. verse 11

  860. says.

  861. God's

  862. justice and

  863. anger has

  864. been dealt

  865. with.

  866. We are

  867. at peace.

  868. That's the

  869. goal of

  870. justification.

  871. He doesn't

  872. give the

  873. blood of

  874. his son so

  875. that we

  876. can exit

  877. that courtroom

  878. and then

  879. go on

  880. living for

  881. ourselves.

  882. No,

  883. he justifies

  884. us in

  885. his courtroom

  886. so that we

  887. can then

  888. go home

  889. into his

  890. home and

  891. have peace

  892. and enjoy

  893. the father

  894. again and

  895. live for

  896. him.

  897. Because

  898. justification

  899. is already

  900. sorted,

  901. we have

  902. been justified.

  903. Past tense.

  904. It's already

  905. sorted by

  906. his grace.

  907. Nothing we

  908. do, not

  909. even the

  910. strength of

  911. our faith

  912. adds to

  913. it.

  914. We can

  915. be 100%

  916. sure that

  917. we and

  918. God are

  919. good.

  920. Verse 2

  921. states this,

  922. Through him,

  923. through Christ,

  924. we have

  925. also obtained

  926. access by

  927. faith into

  928. this grace

  929. in which

  930. we stand

  931. and we

  932. rejoice in

  933. hope of

  934. the glory

  935. of God.

  936. Now,

  937. please notice

  938. at this point,

  939. none of this

  940. is telling you

  941. what you must

  942. do.

  943. this is all

  944. saying what

  945. God has

  946. done in

  947. Jesus.

  948. It's not

  949. saying you

  950. need to

  951. obtain access

  952. by praying.

  953. It's not

  954. saying that.

  955. It's saying

  956. you have

  957. access.

  958. He's done

  959. this.

  960. You are in

  961. grace.

  962. If you're a

  963. Christian,

  964. that's where

  965. you live.

  966. You are in

  967. grace.

  968. That's where

  969. you stand.

  970. That's all

  971. you'll ever

  972. receive from

  973. God.

  974. Now and

  975. forever is

  976. grace.

  977. grace.

  978. And I

  979. think that's

  980. why it

  981. talks about

  982. sufferings in

  983. the next

  984. verse.

  985. I was

  986. wondering,

  987. why talk

  988. about

  989. sufferings as

  990. the first

  991. thing?

  992. Because once

  993. you understand

  994. justification is

  995. sorted, it

  996. changes your

  997. perspective on

  998. sufferings and

  999. any other

  1000. evidence that

  1001. you don't have

  1002. peace with

  1003. God.

  1004. You can even

  1005. rejoice in

  1006. suffering now.

  1007. Not that you

  1008. love pain,

  1009. but you can

  1010. see a meaning

  1011. to it now.

  1012. There's hope

  1013. now.

  1014. It's a pretty

  1015. wild thing for

  1016. a Christian to

  1017. think, I've

  1018. got peace with

  1019. God and yet

  1020. he's given me

  1021. this medical

  1022. diagnosis.

  1023. Really?

  1024. You've got

  1025. peace with

  1026. God but your

  1027. mental illness

  1028. just won't

  1029. get better?

  1030. Really?

  1031. That's what

  1032. you're claiming?

  1033. sure seems

  1034. like punishment.

  1035. Or is

  1036. Martin Luther

  1037. trembled before

  1038. the council that

  1039. told him you

  1040. better retract or

  1041. you will be

  1042. excommunicated from

  1043. the church and

  1044. you'll die?

  1045. You sure you've

  1046. got peace?

  1047. You sure you've

  1048. got peace?

  1049. God says your

  1050. justification is

  1051. sorted at the

  1052. cross and

  1053. resurrection,

  1054. then we can be

  1055. sure that not a

  1056. drop of

  1057. suffering is

  1058. punishment.

  1059. Not a drop.

  1060. this came home to

  1061. me once when I

  1062. was doing the

  1063. washing up.

  1064. It was a bit

  1065. random but it

  1066. just, this is just

  1067. my personal, it

  1068. just came home to

  1069. me afresh for some

  1070. reason.

  1071. I cut myself

  1072. washing up on a

  1073. pair of tongs, I

  1074. don't know how you

1075. do that but I did

  1076. it.

  1077. And sorry for this

  1078. image but I was

  1079. just bleeding into

  1080. the sink and I

  1081. was, I don't know,

1082. it just came home to

1083. me that this blood is

  1084. not punishment.

  1085. Because Jesus'

  1086. blood is spilled.

  1087. I will never

  1088. experience a drop

  1089. of punishment.

  1090. Discipline, yes,

  1091. but that is very

  1092. different.

  1093. If you are

  1094. disciplined because

  1095. you're forgiven,

  1096. because you are a

  1097. legitimate child,

  1098. you're disciplined.

  1099. That's not

  1100. punishment.

  1101. Because our

  1102. justification is

  1103. sorted, it

  1104. changes your whole

  1105. view on

  1106. suffering.

  1107. It's God making

  1108. sure you make it

  1109. home to glory.

  1110. So Christian,

  1111. don't look at your

  1112. circumstances or

  1113. what people say or

  1114. what your mind says

  1115. even about your

  1116. peace with God.

  1117. Look at the

  1118. cross.

  1119. All you ever

  1120. receive is grace to

  1121. make sure you make

  1122. it home to glory.

  1123. You may not

  1124. understand how but

  1125. that is where you

  1126. live.

  1127. You live in grace.

  1128. And we've got the

  1129. down payment of it.

  1130. In verse 5,

  1131. God's love has been

  1132. poured into our

  1133. hearts through the

  1134. Holy Spirit who has

  1135. been given to us.

1136. I think that as we

  1137. look at the cross,

  1138. we know we are

  1139. loved.

  1140. The Holy Spirit

  1141. testifies to us.

  1142. What about the fact

  1143. that I still wrestle

  1144. with sin?

  1145. I still sin every

  1146. single day.

  1147. Surely that's

  1148. evidence that I'm

  1149. not fully forgiven.

  1150. I think that's what

  1151. verses 6 to 11 in

  1152. chapter 5 are about.

  1153. Verse 8,

  1154. God shows, he

  1155. demonstrates his

1156. love for us in that

  1157. while we were still

  1158. sinners, Christ died

  1159. for us.

  1160. Jesus has already

  1161. done the hard

  1162. part.

  1163. When you're an

  1164. enemy, he's now

  1165. reconciled you.

  1166. You're a child

  1167. now.

  1168. While you're a

  1169. sinner, he died for

  1170. you and demonstrated

  1171. his love.

  1172. He's done the

  1173. hard part.

  1174. Trust him to do

  1175. the rest.

  1176. He's already

  1177. paid for that

  1178. sin today and

  1179. that sin tomorrow.

  1180. He's paid for

  1181. that in the

  1182. past.

  1183. He's living to

  1184. make sure you

  1185. will get home.

  1186. We're not to

  1187. look at our

  1188. ongoing sin as

  1189. the measure of

  1190. how much peace

  1191. we have with

  1192. God.

  1193. We're to look

  1194. at the cross to

  1195. tell us how

  1196. much peace we

  1197. have with

  1198. God.

  1199. Even, dare I

  1200. say this, even

  1201. in that moment

  1202. when you are

  1203. loving sin, you

  1204. just don't want

  1205. to do what

  1206. God says and

  1207. you are

  1208. hardened, you

  1209. just don't

  1210. care and you

  1211. are choosing to

  1212. do what you

  1213. know is wrong,

  1214. even in that

  1215. moment, you

  1216. have peace with

  1217. God.

  1218. He loves you

  1219. with all he

  1220. has.

  1221. You are

  1222. robbing yourself

  1223. of enjoying that

  1224. peace, but

  1225. that doesn't

  1226. change the

  1227. fact that you

  1228. have peace.

  1229. I think that

  1230. thought, for

  1231. me at least,

  1232. it ruins the

  1233. enjoyment of

  1234. sin.

  1235. God loves me

  1236. right now.

  1237. So let me

  1238. finish.

  1239. When God

  1240. says all is

  1241. forgiven, how

  1242. forgiven is

  1243. that?

  1244. Well, you can

  1245. rely on God

  1246. being just.

  1247. Like the

  1248. prophet Micah

  1249. said, not

  1250. even offering

  1251. your firstborn

  1252. child will pay

  1253. for the sin of

  1254. your soul, but

  1255. God's firstborn

  1256. has.

  1257. He has, all

  1258. his justice has

  1259. been poured out

  1260. on his son, and

  1261. you can trust him

  1262. to be just, to

  1263. only give you

  1264. grace from here

  1265. on.

  1266. He did it so

  1267. that he might be

  1268. just and the

  1269. justifier of the

  1270. one who has

  1271. faith in Jesus.

  1272. We can walk in

  1273. hope knowing

  1274. that even in

  1275. suffering and

  1276. ongoing sin, all

  1277. we've got is

  1278. grace.

  1279. Because the

  1280. final verdict over

  1281. your life,

  1282. righteous, is

  1283. now in the

  1284. past, when

  1285. Jesus rose from

  1286. the dead.

  1287. We've got to

  1288. take God at

  1289. his word.

  1290. Despite all the

  1291. evidence, we

  1292. take God at

  1293. his word.

  1294. So brothers

  1295. and sisters

  1296. who already

  1297. do believe,

  1298. such a God,

  1299. such a just

  1300. salvation, as

  1301. Romans 12

  1302. says, in

  1303. gratitude,

  1304. deserves a

  1305. whole life

  1306. of worship.

  1307. That's how we

  1308. are to respond

  1309. to this.

  1310. And if you

  1311. haven't yet

  1312. tasted such

  1313. full forgiveness

  1314. and peace with

  1315. God,

  1316. if God is

  1317. giving you

  1318. even a glimpse

  1319. this morning

  1320. into that

  1321. gate of

  1322. paradise, if

  1323. he's giving

  1324. you a glimpse,

  1325. don't linger at

  1326. the gate.

  1327. Why would you?

  1328. What are you

  1329. waiting for?

  1330. Let me pray.

  1331. Let's pray.

  1332. Father, in

  1333. light of what

  1334. you've done

  1335. for us, I

  1336. just want to

  1337. pray and

  1338. say thank

  1339. you.

  1340. Amen.

  1341. Amen.

  1342. Amen.

  1343. Amen.

  1344. Thank you.
