  1. Malachi chapter 3 starts from verse 16.

    Malachi 3 chapter mention

  2. Then those who feared the Lord spoke with one another.

  3. The Lord paid attention and heard them,

  4. and the book of remembrance was written before him

  5. of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name.

  6. They shall be mine, says the Lord of hosts.

  7. In the day when I made up my precious possession,

  8. and I will spare them as a man,

  9. and spare his son who served him,

  10. then once more you shall see the distinction

  11. between the righteous and the wicked,

  12. between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.

  13. For behold, the day is coming,

  14. burning like an oven,

  15. when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble.

  16. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze,

  17. says the Lord of hosts,

  18. so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.

  19. But for you who fear my name,

  20. the son of righteousness,

  21. shall rise with healing in his wings.

  22. You shall go out,

  23. leaping like calves from the store,

  24. and you shall tread down the wicked,

  25. for there will be ashes under soles of your feet.

  26. On the day when I act,

  27. says the Lord of hosts,

  28. remember the Lord of my servant Moses,

  29. the statues and rules that I commanded him

  30. at Horeb for all Israel.

  31. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet

  32. before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes,

  33. and he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children

  34. and the hearts of children to their fathers,

  35. lest I come and stride the land

  36. with the decree of utter destruction.

  37. This is the word of the Lord.

  38. Well, good morning everyone.

  39. Question to get you all thinking this morning.

  40. Is judgment negative or positive?

  41. Both.

  42. It always has to be...

  43. Well, yeah, okay, that's both.

  44. All right.

  45. Our society, I think you're right,

  46. our society almost invariably sees judgment as negative.

  47. I think that's why, you know,

  48. the common protest of society these days

  49. is don't judge me.

  50. That assumes that any sort of criticism

  51. or challenge is negative

  52. because it's a restriction of personal freedom,

  53. a restriction of the right to pursue happiness

  54. as people see it.

  55. But imagine this.

  56. Imagine you're a parent

  57. and you're walking down the road

  58. and your child starts to bolt across a busy road

  59. into oncoming traffic.

  60. And you just lean forward

  61. and you yank that child roughly back,

  62. yelling at them,

  63. don't ever do that again,

  64. it's so dangerous.

  65. Your child might well think

  66. that judgment was rather negative.

  67. But from your perspective,

  68. it was actually positive.

  69. It was life-saving.

  70. So yes,

  71. judgment very much depends on the intent

  72. and the context

  73. in which it occurs.

  74. And that's a really important perspective

  75. to bring into Malachi.

  76. The end of Malachi's prophecy,

  77. particularly,

  78. because judgment is dominant.

  79. But it's also the end of the Old Testament

  80. where judgment is dominant.

  81. If you look at chapter 4, verse 6,

  82. that very last phrase,

  83. lest I come and strike the land

  84. with a curse

  85. or with a decree of utter destruction.

  86. Now that seems like somewhat of a rather

  87. negative statement

  88. to end up the whole of the Old Testament,

  89. end up this prophesy of Malachi.

  90. Malachi.

  91. Effectively, this is God's last word

  92. until we hear from the Gospels

  93. when Jesus comes into the world.

  94. Yet simultaneously,

  95. Malachi

  96. measures on the theme of hope.

  97. So if you look at chapter 4, verse 4,

  98. there's another decree

  99. that the Lord urges his people to remember.

  100. And that is,

  101. and it doesn't come out in the English version,

  102. but it's remember the decree

  103. of my servant Moses,

  104. the decrees that I commanded him at Horeb.

  105. Sorry, it should have been

  106. remember the law of my servant Moses,

  107. the decrees that I commanded him at Horeb,

  108. or Sinai,

  109. for all Israel.

  110. And if you go back to that decree,

  111. that was the Ten Commandments.

  112. That's loosely what this refers to.

  113. And the Ten Commandments were that

  114. which were born out of God saying,

  115. I have now entered into a relationship with you.

  116. I will be your God

  117. and you will be my people.

  118. And this is what our relationship

  119. will be framed by.

  120. And this is what it will look like.

  121. This is what the good life

  122. under my love and under my rule

  123. will look like.

  124. So side by side

  125. with judgment and curse

  126. is hope.

  127. Judgment and hope.

  128. So we need to think of judgment and hope

  129. like conjoined twins.

  130. God's judgment promises

  131. both destruction

  132. to those who continue to rebel.

  133. And we'll see a bit more of that

  134. from chapter 3 verse 18.

  135. Or chapter 4 verse 1 rather.

  136. Promises destruction

  137. for those who continue to rebel

  138. and healing, renewal

  139. to those who esteem

  140. and honour his name.

  141. Both happen simultaneously.

  142. One event,

  143. two very different outcomes.

  144. Malachi, therefore,

  145. may be the end of the Old Testament

  146. but certainly not the end

  147. of God's story of salvation.

  148. We find, we get to the end of Malachi,

  149. that there has to be a sequel.

  150. There's more of the story to come

  151. where judgment and hope

  152. will move to a final climax

  153. as the Lord judges sin

  154. and heals his people

  155. and renews them to worship him

  156. as he deserves.

  157. So the question I want to take

  158. with us into the text now

  159. is why does hope

  160. need to be there so buoyantly,

  161. so much in your face

  162. as we finish up with this

  163. threat of curse?

  164. Well, the answer is because

  165. God's healing,

  166. God's healing intervention

  167. is so desperately needed.

  168. So right through,

  169. over four weeks now,

  170. we've seen what's happening here

  171. in Malachi.

  172. The Lord, through Malachi,

  173. is forcing his people

  174. to recognise

  175. the awful state

  176. of their relationship.

  177. It was a relationship

  178. in name only, really,

  179. as far as the people

  180. were concerned.

  181. And the Lord's forcing them

  182. to see how empty

  183. and shallow it is.

  184. Why?

  185. That they might recognise

  186. once again

  187. the desperate need

  188. for God's radical intervention

  189. to save the relationship.

  190. We've seen over three weeks

  191. that God's covenant faithfulness

  192. was beyond question.

  193. We started

  194. with covenant faithfulness.

  195. I have loved you,

  196. said the Lord.

  197. He had loved them uniquely.

  198. He had loved them exclusively.

  199. He had loved them generously

  200. over generations.

  201. Last week we saw

  202. in chapter 3, verse 6,

  203. the sheer fact

  204. that the people of Israel

  205. still existed

  206. was all the evidence

  207. you needed

  208. of God's love.

  209. Equally true,

  210. but in sharp contrast,

  211. their covenant unfaithfulness

  212. was beyond question.

  213. We've seen that again

  214. over three weeks.

  215. Essentially the Lord said,

  216. you have spurned my love

  217. at every point.

  218. Chapter 3, verse 7,

  219. we looked at it last week.

  220. From the days of your fathers

  221. you have turned aside

  222. from my statutes

  223. and have not kept them.

  224. But,

  225. they've thrown God's love

  226. back in his face.

  227. They'd chased other lovers

  228. to follow the metaphor

  229. through here.

  230. They'd chased a good life

  231. apart from God.

  232. Still booked

  233. taking the relationship,

  234. but deep down

  235. their hearts were devoid

  236. of any respect

  237. for the Lord.

  238. And certainly devoid

  239. of any affection for Him.

  240. And then again,

  241. we bounce again,

  242. God's faithfulness

  243. was beyond question

  244. in response to that.

  245. God says,

  246. being true to His character,

  247. you will experience

  248. my righteous character

  249. in judgment.

  250. You see,

  251. God takes Himself

  252. very seriously.

  253. He will not allow

  254. Himself to be treated

  255. with contempt.

  256. Back in chapter 1,

  257. verse 14,

  258. we saw that verse,

  259. He says,

  260. For I am a great king,

  261. says the Lord of hosts,

  262. and my name

  263. will be feared

  264. among the nations.

  265. Chapter 1,

  266. verse 11,

  267. For from the rising

  268. of the sun

  269. to its setting,

  270. my name will be great

  271. among the nations.

  272. And in every place,

  273. incense will be offered

  274. to my name,

  275. and a pure offering.

  276. God takes Himself

  277. very seriously.

  278. And if people

  279. don't respond

  280. as they ought

  281. to God's love,

  282. mercy,

  283. and grace,

  284. then God says,

  285. you'll experience

  286. my covenant faithfulness

  287. in a different hue.

  288. You'll experience it

  289. in judgment.

  290. Both are covenant faithfulness.

  291. Both reveal

  292. my covenant character.

  293. And if you experience

  294. my judgment,

  295. then either that will be

  296. in partial judgment,

  297. and the partial judgment

  298. we saw last week

  299. in chapter 3

  300. was disciplinary

  301. and correctional

  302. or restorative.

  303. Or,

  304. says the Lord,

  305. we'll see in chapter 4,

  306. verse 1,

  307. you'll face

  308. my judgment

  309. ultimately

  310. and final.

  311. that is punitive

  312. and condemnatory.

  313. So,

  314. where are God's people

  315. in all of this?

  316. Well,

  317. if you look at chapter 3,

  318. verse 18,

  319. God's people

  320. are found out.

  321. They knew

  322. that God's judgment

  323. would bring division.

  324. But they'd come

  325. to believe

  326. that that division

  327. would be along

  328. racial lines.

  329. On the one side

  330. would be Israel

  331. and all the other

  332. nations on the other side

  333. and all the other

  334. nations would get it

  335. from God,

  336. get it in the neck

  337. from God

  338. and they would be

  339. preserved.

  340. But the Lord

  341. doesn't say it like that.

  342. The Lord says,

  343. yes,

  344. you're right

  345. and there will be

  346. division.

  347. And in a sense,

  348. you are right.

  349. I will look at

  350. my nation,

  351. Israel,

  352. different from

  353. the other nations.

  354. But,

  355. ultimately,

  356. the divide

  357. in my judgment

  358. will be between

  359. those who fear me

  360. and those

  361. who don't.

  362. Those who serve me

  363. and those who don't.

  364. Those who esteem me

  365. and those who don't.

  366. We saw last week

  367. in the first part

  368. of this,

  369. looking at judgment

  370. and God's intervention,

  371. that God's judgment

  372. on his people

  373. would be severe

  374. but partial.

  375. We had those

  376. metaphors

  377. like the refiner's fire.

  378. And that's serious heat

  379. to melt down

  380. ore

  381. and float off

  382. all the dross.

  383. And the whole idea

  384. of that is that

  385. in the old days

  386. the refiner knew

  387. it was perfect

  388. when he could see

  389. his own reflection

  390. on the top

  391. of the metal.

  392. That's a really

  393. lovely metaphor.

  394. That was serious heat

  395. the Lord's going to

  396. bring to his people.

  397. But it was designed

  398. to discipline,

  399. to bring them back,

  400. to purify,

  401. to bring them back

  402. to himself

  403. so they might

  404. worship him

  405. in spirit and truth.

  406. And in chapter 2

  407. verse 2

  408. we saw two weeks ago

  409. the Lord says,

  410. outs his people

  411. by saying look

  412. you've gone through

  413. all the motions

  414. of serving me

  415. but here's the real

  416. problem for you guys.

  417. You've not set

  418. your hearts

  419. to honour me.

  420. The heart of the problem

  421. was the problem

  422. of the heart.

  423. And God knew

  424. that his children,

  425. his people

  426. were unable

  427. and unwilling

  428. to obey him,

  429. to respond

  430. properly to his love.

  431. And since that's true,

  432. God's people

  433. needed

  434. the real hope

  435. of God's intervention,

  436. of God's healing

  437. if God's judgment

  438. in a final form

  439. was not to settle

  440. upon them.

  441. Chapter 4 verse 1

  442. the day is coming

  443. burning like an oven

  444. when all the arrogant

  445. all evildoers

  446. will be stubble.

  447. The day that is coming

  448. shall set them ablaze.

  449. There's a wildfire coming.

  450. God's people

  451. need serious

  452. intervention,

  453. serious help,

  454. serious healing.

  455. the sort that only

  456. the Lord could deliver

  457. to reformat them

  458. from the inside out.

  459. If the problem

  460. was a heart,

  461. then they needed

  462. new hearts.

  463. And all the prophets

  464. before him

  465. had spoken of

  466. this same problem

  467. and offered

  468. the same hope

  469. that the Lord

  470. would intervene

  471. and renew hearts

  472. so his people

  473. could worship him

  474. as he

  475. expected them to

  476. and wanted them to.

  477. Amen.

  478. So God's

  479. intervention

  480. is seriously needed

  481. but secondly

  482. God's healing intervention

  483. would be just

  484. what is needed.

  485. Surprise, surprise.

  486. It's tailor made

  487. to what is needed

  488. in the situation.

  489. Chapter 4 verse 1

  490. again.

  491. God's intervention

  492. is pictured

  493. as one day.

  494. But the metaphor

  495. gets mixed up a little

  496. because there's two

  497. types of fire in here.

  498. There's a fire

  499. like a wildfire

  500. that just consumes

  501. everything before it

  502. and then there's

  503. the fire

  504. that's associated

  505. with the sun,

  506. the rays of the sun.

  507. One's consuming,

  508. one's restorative.

  509. Both are controlled.

  510. So when we think

  511. of a wildfire

  512. we often think

  513. of something

  514. being out of control.

  515. Well that's not

  516. the picture here.

  517. A wildfire

  518. is the heat

  519. of the thing.

  520. It burns,

  521. if you remember

  522. last year

  523. the wildfire

  524. swept through Tasmania.

  525. There were some

  526. places where

  527. the soil was burned

  528. down six inches deep

  529. all the organic

  530. material was burned

  531. out at a depth

  532. of six inches.

  533. There was never

  534. going to be anything

  535. to recover from that.

  536. That's the sort

  537. of serious fire,

  538. the consuming fire

  539. that's been spoken here.

  540. But it's not out of control.

  541. It is precisely

  542. as the Lord

  543. means it to be.

  544. It will deliver

  545. the precise

  546. and distinct outcomes

  547. that the Lord

  548. means it to deliver

  549. for God's people,

  550. for those who fear

  551. his name.

  552. Look at chapter 3

  553. verse 16.

  554. Then those

  555. who feared the Lord

  556. spoke with one another.

  557. The Lord

  558. paid attention

  559. and heard them.

  560. And a book

  561. of remembrance

  562. was written before him

  563. of those who feared

  564. the Lord

  565. and esteemed

  566. his name.

  567. They shall be mine,

  568. says the Lord

  569. of hosts,

  570. in the day

  571. when I make up

  572. my treasured possession

  573. and I will

  574. spare them

  575. as a man

  576. spares his son

  577. who serves him.

  578. We have a group

  579. of people here

  580. in amongst

  581. the vast

  582. part of God's people

  583. who have got

  584. no affection,

  585. no esteem for God.

  586. We've got a group

  587. in here

  588. who

  589. still do fear

  590. the Lord

  591. and who are

  592. talking with one another,

  593. presumably,

  594. to encourage

  595. one another,

  596. to keep on

  597. fearing the Lord,

  598. not to go

  599. with the flow,

  600. to keep on

  601. esteeming him

  602. or valuing him

  603. as a first order.

  604. People who,

  605. chapter 3

  606. verse 18,

  607. who desired

  608. to serve God

  609. because he was

  610. worth serving.

  611. For this group

  612. of people,

  613. God's judgment

  614. would result

  615. in perfect righteousness.

  616. It would be

  617. the healing

  618. they long for.

  619. In chapter 4

  620. then,

  621. we get the metaphor

  622. continued,

  623. the son of righteousness

  624. shall rise with

  625. healings in its wings.

  626. The picture here

  627. is of the sun

  628. rising.

  629. And what happens

  630. when the sun rises?

  631. Well, firstly,

  632. it brings to an end

  633. the dark night.

  634. So the picture here

  635. is the son of righteousness.

  636. God's intervention

  637. is going to bring

  638. to an end

  639. that long,

  640. dark night

  641. of sin

  642. and misery

  643. and disobedience

  644. and struggle.

  645. That very stuff

  646. that marked

  647. the life of God's people.

  648. And as the sun

  649. comes up,

  650. it's a fresh day,

  651. a fresh start

  652. in righteousness.

  653. righteousness.

  654. Now,

  655. I suspect

  656. that's a very easy

  657. picture for us

  658. to engage with.

  659. At least I find it

  660. really easy

  661. to engage with.

  662. Having been out

  663. camping under the stars

  664. many a night

  665. when it's been

  666. seriously cold,

  667. perhaps even wet

  668. and there's nothing

  669. nicer

  670. than the sun

  671. coming up

  672. over the horizon

  673. and immediately

  674. you just feel

  675. its warmth

  676. and suddenly

  677. you just feel

  678. lifted,

  679. don't you?

  680. It's a fresh start.

  681. It's therapeutic.

  682. That's the picture here.

  683. It's a moment

  684. to be longed for.

  685. It's a moment

  686. to be savoured.

  687. As even pictured here,

  688. it's probably

  689. something only people

  690. in the northern hemisphere

  691. would understand

  692. this idea of

  693. you shall go out

  694. leaping like cows

  695. from the stall.

  696. It was a big thing

  697. for us.

  698. Our animals

  699. were always

  700. penned up

  701. for six months

  702. of the year

  703. over an hour old.

  704. It used to be

  705. no end of fun

  706. for us,

  707. probably a bit

  708. pathetic,

  709. that was fun for us,

  710. but come time of spring

  711. when you let them out

  712. and they absolutely

  713. went psycho

  714. for perhaps

  715. a couple of hours.

  716. They would just

  717. race around

  718. and kick their heels

  719. up and snort

  720. and get on

  721. in among the fresh grass

  722. enjoying the spring day.

  723. That's the picture here.

  724. It would be

  725. such a time

  726. of excitement

  727. and joy

  728. and no wonder

  729. because it would

  730. be the time

  731. of healing.

  732. It would be

  733. the time

  734. of finally

  735. getting what

  736. they've longed for,

  737. the ability

  738. to properly

  739. worship God.

  740. The time

  741. they would be

  742. what they knew

  743. God had created

  744. them to be

  745. as they worshipped

  746. God.

  747. The time

  748. when they knew

  749. they were actually

  750. being what God

  751. wanted them to be

  752. all along.

  753. People of righteousness,

  754. faithful and delightful

  755. to the Lord.

  756. So,

  757. God's judgment

  758. would just be

  759. what was needed,

  760. exactly what was needed

  761. for God's people.

  762. And it would just be

  763. exactly what's needed

  764. for God's glory

  765. because the two things

  766. exist side by side

  767. as we come to the end

  768. of Malachi's prophecy.

  769. sometimes we tend

  770. to be a little bit

  771. focused on our own

  772. sort of situation,

  773. the people situation.

  774. But God's glory

  775. is working here

  776. as much as anything else.

  777. God's intervention

  778. would showcase

  779. that what he said

  780. earlier in the prophecy

  781. was true,

  782. that he was a great king.

  783. It would demonstrate

  784. why his name is great

  785. across the world.

  786. His holiness

  787. would be known

  788. by his consuming judgment.

  789. those who refused

  790. to bow before the Lord

  791. would experience

  792. this consuming judgment.

  793. It would be a wildfire.

  794. It would just consume them.

  795. Nothing would survive.

  796. So God's glory

  797. would be established

  798. as the wicked

  799. get precisely

  800. what they deserve.

  801. And 3.18

  802. Finally,

  803. the rubbish talk

  804. that we talked about

  805. last week,

  806. the rubbish talk

  807. of many of his people.

  808. Remember they were

  809. complaining in their hearts

  810. that, well, look,

  811. what's the point

  812. of serving the Lord?

  813. There's actually no difference

  814. between the righteous

  815. and the wicked.

  816. What's the point?

  817. And suddenly the Lord

  818. says, well,

  819. you will then see

  820. that your rubbish talk

  821. was rubbish

  822. and you will see

  823. there's a vast difference

  824. between the righteous

  825. and the wicked.

  826. And both

  827. will ascribe

  828. their situations

  829. to my character

  830. and my covenant faithfulness.

  831. And so as it's been

  832. right through,

  833. the Lord's really

  834. seen his people,

  835. well,

  836. my greatness

  837. will be seen

  838. in my consuming judgment,

  839. but my greatness

  840. will be seen also

  841. in my grace

  842. and love

  843. and mercy to you

  844. and my healing of you.

  845. And even more so

  846. if you'll return to me.

  847. If only you'd trust me,

  848. says the Lord.

  849. You'll prove that

  850. beyond measure.

  851. You see,

  852. in among all of that,

  853. the Lord knew

  854. only too well

  855. the inability

  856. of his people

  857. to do that

  858. on their own steam.

  859. We're back in

  860. 3, 16, 17 again.

  861. The Lord knew.

  862. He knew right

  863. from day one

  864. that his people

  865. didn't have the ability

  866. to serve him

  867. and obey him

  868. as they ought.

  869. But here's the rubb

  870. in verse 16 and 17.

  871. The Lord was delighted

  872. when he saw his people

  873. trying to do that,

  874. trying to esteem him,

  875. trying to fear him.

  876. That's what got

  877. God's attention.

  878. Remember last week

  879. the Lord said

  880. he was just tired.

  881. He was sick and tired

  882. of listening to the ear bashing

  883. they were giving him,

  884. all the rubbish talk.

  885. But what gets his attention?

  886. Well,

  887. when his people

  888. are trying

  889. to honour him,

  890. even though they know

  891. they fail

  892. in doing that.

  893. And what's his response

  894. to that?

  895. Well,

  896. this book of remembrance,

  897. I think again

  898. it's most likely

  899. a picture.

  900. It's a commitment

  901. of the Lord

  902. to actually

  903. write down

  904. as it were

  905. and tuck it

  906. into his brain

  907. if we can think

  908. of the Lord like that.

  909. All these people

  910. and he says,

  911. wow,

  912. this is exactly

  913. what I'm about

  914. in my grace

  915. and mercy

  916. and love.

  917. And he commits himself

  918. to giving

  919. these people

  920. secure,

  921. everlasting

  922. relationship.

  923. He commits himself

  924. to being close

  925. to them

  926. in an intimate

  927. relationship.

  928. They shall be mine.

  929. Now,

  930. it's important

  931. to remember here

  932. this isn't a commitment.

  933. this book

  934. isn't listing

  935. all the good people

  936. as if somehow

  937. or other

  938. they deserve

  939. God's blessing.

  940. This book of remembrance

  941. is about sinful people

  942. whom,

  943. as it says

  944. in verse 17,

  945. he would spare.

  946. Very powerful word

  947. that one.

  948. He's not rewarding

  949. them for their goodness,

  950. he's sparing them

  951. as a man

  952. spares a son

  953. who serves him.

  954. In contrast

  955. to those

  956. who would be

  957. consumed by his fire

  958. getting exactly

  959. what they deserved,

  960. this group of people

  961. because they sought

  962. to fear the Lord

  963. would get precisely

  964. what they didn't deserve

  965. and could never

  966. really earn.

  967. They would

  968. and it's all theirs

  969. because of the Lord's

  970. grace and mercy

  971. and love

  972. and commitment

  973. to them.

  974. But there's something

  975. else happening

  976. in verse 17

  977. because the language

  978. there takes you

  979. back to Exodus

    Exodus 19:5

  980. chapter 19

  981. verse 5.

  982. Remember the Lord,

  983. the Exodus,

  984. the Lord brought

  985. his people out of Egypt

  986. and he brought

  987. them to himself

  988. in Mount Sinai

  989. under Moses.

  990. In chapter 19

  991. verse 5

  992. the Lord there says

  993. I will be,

  994. I brought you

  995. in eagle's wings

  996. and it's very interesting

  997. there's another

  998. bird reference here

  999. in chapter 4

  1000. verse 4.

  1001. I just don't have time

  1002. I spent a lot of time

  1003. getting lost in that

  1004. this week

  1005. but I don't have time

  1006. to follow it through

  1007. now you can think

  1008. about it yourself.

  1009. The Lord said

  1010. I brought you

  1011. to myself

  1012. on eagle's wings

1013. I will be your God

  1014. and you will be

  1015. my treasured

  1016. possession forever.

  1017. So what's happening

  1018. here

  1019. in chapter 3

  1020. verse 16

  1021. 17

  1022. the end of

  1023. Malachi's prophecy

  1024. is simply

  1025. an affirmation

  1026. that the Lord

  1027. is still doing

  1028. what he had

  1029. promised to do

  1030. all the way back

  1031. at Exodus.

  1032. He promised

  1033. to rescue his people

  1034. and he actually

  1035. did rescue his people.

  1036. He brought them

  1037. to himself

  1038. he made himself

  1039. their God

  1040. and called them

  1041. his treasured

  1042. possession

  1043. and that's exactly

  1044. what we're hearing

  1045. here again.

  1046. Once again

  1047. we're seeing

  1048. God's glory

  1049. because we're seeing

  1050. God's covenant

  1051. faithfulness.

  1052. And look at

  1053. chapter 4

  1054. verse 4

  1055. 5 and 6

  1056. now.

  1057. As we

  1058. end up

  1059. the Old Testament

  1060. end up

  1061. prophecy of Malachi

  1062. what will allow

  1063. God's people

  1064. to live

  1065. confidently

  1066. in God's

  1067. future promises

  1068. or God's

  1069. hope

  1070. God's promises

  1071. of healing

  1072. and intervention

  1073. in the future.

  1074. Healing

  1075. and remuel.

  1076. Well

  1077. I think

  1078. it's this

  1079. confidence

  1080. in God's promises

  1081. going forward

  1082. is based

  1083. on

  1084. God's

  1085. character

  1086. and actions

  1087. in the past

  1088. and specifically

  1089. what these

  1090. two guys

  1091. here

  1092. Moses

  1093. and Elijah

  1094. represent.

  1095. To live

  1096. confidently

  1097. in God's

  1098. future promises

  1099. is

  1100. verse 4

  1101. to remember.

  1102. Look back

  1103. don't be old

  1104. fashioned

  1105. that's not what

  1106. he's saying

  1107. but be people

  1108. of the past

  1109. truly in the past

  1110. in terms of

  1111. what God

  1112. has done.

  1113. Remember

  1114. that God

  1115. does what

  1116. he says

  1117. he will do.

  1118. And so

  1119. God's last

  1120. words to his

  1121. people here

  1122. before a

  1123. sound of

  1124. some 400

  1125. more years

  1126. is remember

  1127. Moses

  1128. and remember

  1129. Elijah.

  1130. So

  1131. remember

  1132. Moses.

  1133. What do

  1134. they remember?

  1135. Well

  1136. we've just

  1137. spoken about

  1138. it in

  1139. 3,

  1140. 16,

  1141. 17.

  1142. Remember

  1143. that the

  1144. Lord

  1145. initiated

  1146. relationship

  1147. with you

  1148. in spite

  1149. of your

  1150. sin and

  1151. failure.

  1152. The

  1153. Lord

  1154. brought you

  1155. to himself

  1156. simply because

  1157. it was an

  1158. act of

  1159. God's

  1160. grace and

  1161. mercy.

  1162. Not because

  1163. you deserved

  1164. it.

  1165. The

  1166. Lord

  1167. committed

  1168. himself

  1169. to you

  1170. and made

  1171. you his

  1172. treasured

  1173. possession

  1174. because that

  1175. was God's

  1176. covenant

  1177. faithfulness

  1178. working out.

  1179. Remember

  1180. that God

  1181. gave you

  1182. his

  1183. love to

  1184. shape the

  1185. relationship

  1186. and said

  1187. this is how

  1188. you're going

  1189. to enjoy

  1190. the good

  1191. life with

  1192. me.

  1193. And then

  1194. remember

  1195. also that

  1196. the Lord

  1197. knew even

  1198. as he gave

  1199. you his

  1200. commandments

  1201. that you

  1202. wouldn't be

  1203. able to

  1204. obey them.

  1205. And so

  1206. what did

  1207. the Lord

  1208. do?

  1209. He provided

  1210. a means of

  1211. dealing with

  1212. your sins

  1213. so that the

  1214. relationship

  1215. might continue

  1216. even though

  1217. your sin

  1218. is just

  1219. all over

  1220. it.

  1221. And

  1222. remember

  1223. Elijah.

  1224. Elijah

  1225. perhaps not

  1226. so well

  1227. known to

  1228. some of

  1229. us but

  1230. Elijah he

  1231. was the

  1232. great prophet

  1233. that God's

  1234. people look

  1235. back to.

  1236. As I said

  1237. last week he

  1238. was the

  1239. sort of

  1240. pin-up

  1241. prophet as

  1242. it were.

  1243. he was

  1244. the pinnacle

  1245. of prophecy

  1246. for many

  1247. of God's

  1248. people.

  1249. He was

  1250. the one

  1251. who challenged

  1252. God's

  1253. people to

  1254. address God's

  1255. character and

  1256. God's promises

  1257. when it

  1258. looked like

  1259. God's cause

  1260. had been

  1261. lost in

  1262. the face

  1263. of evil

  1264. attack.

  1265. Elijah was

  1266. a man who

  1267. took on

  1268. the enemies

  1269. of God

  1270. as it

  1271. were

  1272. and defeated

  1273. them.

  1274. But he

  1275. also was a

  1276. man who

  1277. confronted

  1278. God's

  1279. people with

  1280. their sin.

  1281. He urged

  1282. them to

  1283. repent and

  1284. turn back

  1285. to the

  1286. Lord for

  1287. renewed

  1288. blessing.

  1289. And

  1290. remember

  1291. that I'm

  1292. sending you

  1293. a new

  1294. Elijah.

  1295. One who

  1296. will take

  1297. up and

  1298. complete his

  1299. original

  1300. mission.

  1301. Some

  1302. commentators

  1303. think that

  1304. because Elijah

  1305. didn't die,

  1306. he was

  1307. taken up

  1308. to the

  1309. heavens in

  1310. a chariot,

  1311. that that

  1312. sort of

  1313. left God's

  1314. people thinking

  1315. that there

  1316. would be

  1317. another day

  1318. when Elijah

  1319. would return

  1320. to complete

  1321. his mission.

  1322. Whatever you

  1323. make of

  1324. that,

  1325. the Lord

  1326. through his

  1327. word here

  1328. is saying

  1329. I will

  1330. send a

  1331. new

  1332. Elijah.

  1333. One who

  1334. will take

  1335. up and

  1336. complete that

  1337. original

  1338. mission,

  1339. however you

  1340. see it

  1341. being connected

  1342. into that.

  1343. He will

  1344. turn

  1345. God's

  1346. people back

  1347. to serve

  1348. the Lord.

  1349. He will

  1350. confound

  1351. God's

  1352. enemies.

  1353. enemies.

  1354. And so

  1355. my friends,

  1356. as we wrap

  1357. up this

  1358. Malachi

  1359. series,

  1360. the Old

  1361. Testament,

  1362. the whisper

  1363. of Jesus

  1364. has suddenly

  1365. become a

  1366. roar.

  1367. God's

  1368. promised

  1369. healing

  1370. intervention

  1371. comes

  1372. reality

  1373. with the

  1374. birth of

  1375. Jesus

  1376. more than

  1377. 400 years

  1378. later.

  1379. Quite

  1380. literally,

  1381. we step

  1382. from Malachi

  1383. into

  1384. Matthew.

  1385. And in a

  1386. sense,

  1387. that's how

  1388. it happened

  1389. in history.

  1390. God's

  1391. next word

  1392. was with

  1393. the arrival

  1394. of Jesus

  1395. more than

  1396. 400 years

  1397. later.

  1398. And what

  1399. we find

  1400. when we

  1401. move into

  1402. Matthew's

  1403. gospel,

  1404. is that even

  1405. then,

  1406. there were

  1407. some among

  1408. God's

  1409. people who

  1410. had

  1411. remembered

  1412. and who

  1413. continued to

  1414. fear and

  1415. esteem the

  1416. name of the

  1417. Lord.

  1418. Lord,

  1419. there were

  1420. a group,

  1421. a couple

  1422. we'll meet

  1423. next week

  1424. as we

  1425. start our

  1426. next series

  1427. leading up

  1428. to Christmas,

  1429. Christmas songs.

  1430. Two people

  1431. will meet,

  1432. Anna and

  1433. Simeon.

  1434. And they

  1435. were part

  1436. of a group

  1437. that's

  1438. described in

  1439. Matthew's

  1440. gospel as

  1441. those who

  1442. are waiting

  1443. for the

  1444. consolation,

  1445. and that

  1446. word healing

  1447. is there,

  1448. the consolation

  1449. of Israel.

  1450. They

  1451. continued to

  1452. fear the

  1453. Lord.

  1454. They

  1455. continued to

  1456. meet and

  1457. encourage each

  1458. other to

  1459. fear the

  1460. Lord.

  1461. They

  1462. continued to

  1463. esteem the

  1464. Lord.

  1465. Jump

  1466. forward a

  1467. few more

  1468. years,

  1469. and I

  1470. want to

  1471. take you

  1472. into Matthew

  1473. 17,

  1474. as we

  1475. finish up

  1476. this series

  1477. and finish

  1478. up this

  1479. morning.

  1480. Matthew

  1481. 17 is

  1482. that

  1483. episode,

  1484. that incident

  1485. we call

  1486. the

  1487. Transfiguration.

  1488. In the

  1489. Transfiguration,

  1490. we have

  1491. the festival

  1492. for the

  1493. Old Testament,

  1494. the Feast

  1495. of Booths,

  1496. and what

  1497. we have

  1498. initially is

  1499. Moses and

  1500. Elijah

  1501. appearing.

  1502. That's the

  1503. next time

  1504. these two

  1505. characters

  1506. appear together.

  1507. Moses and

  1508. Elijah appear

  1509. and they're

  1510. chatting with

  1511. Jesus.

  1512. The disciples

  1513. have no idea

  1514. what to do

  1515. with all that.

  1516. So they

  1517. initially start

  1518. to treat them

  1519. as equals.

  1520. So let's

  1521. make a booth

  1522. for each of

  1523. the three of

  1524. you.

  1525. And then

  1526. things take

  1527. a very quick

  1528. turn.

  1529. Moses and

  1530. Elijah fade

  1531. into the

  1532. background and

  1533. disappear.

  1534. and Jesus

  1535. is transformed

  1536. with a

  1537. supernatural

  1538. voice saying

  1539. this is my

  1540. beloved son.

  1541. What's

  1542. happening there?

  1543. Well,

  1544. firstly it's

  1545. an intersection

  1546. of Jesus,

  1547. Moses and

  1548. Elijah.

  1549. But secondly,

  1550. it's Moses

  1551. and Elijah

  1552. recognising

  1553. that they

  1554. will step

  1555. into the

  1556. background

  1557. now and

  1558. as it

  1559. were disappear

  1560. and the

  1561. spotlight will

  1562. quite literally

  1563. come onto

  1564. Jesus.

  1565. In other

  1566. words,

  1567. Moses and

  1568. Elijah both

  1569. recognised that

  1570. Jesus is the

  1571. one who would

  1572. bring that

  1573. healing intervention

  1574. which Moses

  1575. and Elijah

  1576. represented

  1577. but were

  1578. unable to

  1579. deliver.

  1580. so it's a

  1581. connection

  1582. but a

  1583. connection

  1584. deliberately

  1585. puts the

  1586. focus onto

  1587. Jesus.

  1588. Jesus would

  1589. be the

  1590. new Moses

  1591. and we

  1592. see that

  1593. through the

  1594. early chapters

  1595. of the

  1596. gospel.

  1597. He would

  1598. be the

  1599. new Moses

  1600. leading God's

  1601. people in

  1602. a new

  1603. exodus.

  1604. That is,

  1605. once again

  1606. rescuing

  1607. God's people

  1608. from bondage

  1609. to sin

  1610. and death,

  1611. bringing

  1612. them to

  1613. the Lord

  1614. as his

  1615. treasured

  1616. possession,

  1617. renewing

  1618. them and

  1619. creating a

  1620. new servant

  1621. nation,

  1622. a global

  1623. servant

  1624. nation which

  1625. we call

  1626. the church.

  1627. Jesus would

  1628. be the

  1629. new Moses

  1630. and Jesus

  1631. like Moses

  1632. would remind

  1633. God's people

  1634. that God

  1635. demanded

  1636. perfect

  1637. obedience to

  1638. his law.

  1639. But as

  1640. the new

  1641. superior

  1642. Moses,

  1643. he would

  1644. actually,

  1645. keep God's

  1646. law for

  1647. God's

  1648. people.

  1649. Because they

  1650. couldn't

  1651. keep it

  1652. for themselves.

  1653. They couldn't

  1654. have that

  1655. standard

  1656. perfection

  1657. that the

  1658. Lord demanded

  1659. of his

  1660. people.

  1661. So,

  1662. Jesus keeps

  1663. the law

  1664. for us.

  1665. He gives

  1666. us his

  1667. righteousness

  1668. so that we

  1669. might have

  1670. the necessary

  1671. righteousness

  1672. promised

  1673. so that we

  1674. can have

  1675. ongoing

  1676. relationship

  1677. with the

  1678. Lord.

  1679. And this

  1680. might be

  1681. more

  1682. controversial,

  1683. but Jesus

  1684. in a sense

  1685. would be

  1686. the new

  1687. Elijah.

  1688. Yes,

  1689. Elijah was

  1690. the first

  1691. and foremost

  1692. John the

  1693. Baptist,

  1694. but in a

  1695. sense,

  1696. Jesus is

  1697. an Elijah

  1698. figure as

  1699. well.

  1700. Except that

  1701. he completes

  1702. what Elijah

  1703. was unable

  1704. to do.

  1705. He calls

  1706. his people

  1707. back to

  1708. the Lord

  1709. to see

  1710. their sin.

  1711. But this

  1712. time,

  1713. Jesus

  1714. actually

  1715. deals

  1716. with

  1717. their

  1718. sin,

  1719. changes

  1720. them

  1721. from the

  1722. inside out,

  1723. makes new

  1724. in our

  1725. hearts and

  1726. minds by

  1727. the finding

  1728. presence of

  1729. God's

  1730. Spirit,

  1731. gives us

  1732. a fresh

  1733. start in

  1734. the good

  1735. life of

  1736. God.

  1737. Friends,

  1738. all God's

  1739. purposes and

  1740. promises of

  1741. healing and

  1742. restoration are

  1743. fulfilled in

  1744. Jesus.

  1745. that's the

  1746. sum of it.

  1747. In him,

  1748. we are the

  1749. righteousness of

  1750. God.

  1751. And we

  1752. need to

  1753. understand that

  1754. as Christians

  1755. today, we

  1756. have everything

  1757. that those

  1758. who feared the

  1759. Lord in

  1760. Malachi's time

  1761. could only look

  1762. forward to and

  1763. long for.

  1764. All God's

  1765. promises are

  1766. yes and

  1767. amen in

  1768. Christ,

  1769. and therefore

  1770. in us as

  1771. Christians.

  1772. So I just

  1773. finish up with

  1774. this challenge.

  1775. The challenge

  1776. is really the

  1777. same as it's

  1778. been every

  1779. day and

  1780. always been

  1781. for God's

  1782. people.

  1783. Will we

  1784. live in

  1785. the righteousness

  1786. as now

  1787. ours in

  1788. Christ,

  1789. and thereby

  1790. show the

  1791. Lord to

  1792. be worthy,

  1793. to be

  1794. served and

  1795. honored?

  1796. God?

  1797. It's a very

  1798. personal question.

  1799. Use the

  1800. language of

  1801. chapter 2,

  1802. verse 2.

  1803. Will we

  1804. set our

  1805. hearts and

  1806. minds to

  1807. honor God?

  1808. So the

  1809. reality is for

  1810. us as

  1811. Christians, we

  1812. can still be

  1813. Christians and

  1814. go through the

  1815. Christian life as

  1816. a box-ticking

  1817. exercise.

  1818. God's

  1819. life.

  1820. That is a

  1821. relationship with

  1822. God that's a

  1823. mile wide and a

  1824. centimeter deep.

  1825. We have so much

  1826. privilege, so much

  1827. more privilege than

  1828. the people of

  1829. Malachi's day,

  1830. because we have the

  1831. reality of the

  1832. healing and the

  1833. reality of God's

  1834. enabling and

  1835. empowering spirit

  1836. with us.

  1837. So, in

  1838. keeping with

  1839. what the

  1840. Lord expected

  1841. from his

  1842. people and

  1843. Malachi's day,

  1844. since we have

  1845. so much

  1846. privilege,

  1847. since we've

  1848. experienced so

  1849. much mercy and

  1850. grace and

  1851. love, then

  1852. our delight

  1853. ought to reflect

  1854. that.

  1855. Our delight in

  1856. the Lord ought to

  1857. reflect that.

  1858. And how do we

  1859. see delight in

  1860. the Lord?

  1861. Well, it's not

  1862. just words.

  1863. Delight in the

  1864. Lord will

  1865. involve what we

  1866. say, but

  1867. primarily it will

  1868. overflow.

  1869. It will be the

  1870. overflow of what's

  1871. in our heart,

  1872. overflowing into

  1873. our actions,

  1874. actions of

  1875. obedience,

  1876. actions of

  1877. praise,

  1878. actions of

  1879. struggle,

  1880. to be faithful,

  1881. to show that we

  1882. esteem the Lord,

  1883. that is value more

  1884. than anything else

  1885. in this life.

  1886. Will you set your

  1887. heart to honour

  1888. the Lord?

  1889. pray with me

  1890. please.

  1891. Lord, forgive us

  1892. for being utterly

  1893. self-centred in

  1894. thinking about our

  1895. salvation so

  1896. easily and so

  1897. regularly, Lord,

  1898. we think about it

  1899. in terms of a

  1900. personal benefit.

  1901. And Lord, that's

  1902. all true.

  1903. We have been

  1904. forgiven.

  1905. we know that we'll

  1906. no longer be held

  1907. accountable for our

  1908. sins and sins,

  1909. though many of

  1910. they continue to

  1911. be.

  1912. We know, Lord,

  1913. that we are now

  1914. joined to you,

  1915. united with you,

1916. and will one day be

  1917. home with you.

  1918. And Lord, we find

  1919. that so amazing,

1920. and yet so often we

  1921. stop there,

  1922. halfway through the

  1923. story.

  1924. And as we

  1925. discovered in our

  1926. Colossians series,

  1927. we don't ask the

  1928. question, what have

  1929. we been saved

  1930. for.

  1931. So Lord, I pray

  1932. that we might be

  1933. those who truly

  1934. respond to your

  1935. love and grace and

  1936. mercy.

  1937. We pray, Lord, that

  1938. we might be those

  1939. who truly delight in

  1940. you, that we

  1941. esteem you, and

  1942. that those around us,

  1943. Lord, might see us

  1944. esteeming you, that

  1945. is valuing you above

  1946. all else in our

  1947. lives.

  1948. Lord, keep us from

  1949. being mediocre or

  1950. cold in our worship

  1951. of you.

  1952. keep us, Lord, from

  1953. being segmented in

  1954. our worship of you,

  1955. thinking that simply

  1956. turning up on a

  1957. Sunday morning is

  1958. worship, and the

1959. rest of the week is

1960. ours to live as we

  1961. please.

  1962. Lord, help us to

  1963. delight in you.

  1964. Help us to make

1965. every day a day of

  1966. worship and praise

  1967. and thankfulness.

  1968. In Jesus' name,

  1969. Amen.

  1970. Amen.

  1971. Amen.

  1972. Amen.
