  1. Good morning, church family. We're going to read God's Word together now.

  2. So if you can turn in your Bibles or devices to Luke chapter 1, starting at verse 26,

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  3. and we're going to read up to verse 55.

  4. So Luke 1, verse 26.

    Luke 1:26

  5. In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,

  6. to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David.

  7. And the virgin's name was Mary.

  8. And he came to her and said,

  9. Greetings, O favoured one, the Lord is with you.

  10. But she was greatly troubled at the saying,

  11. and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be.

  12. And the angel said to her,

  13. Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God.

  14. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,

  15. and you shall call his name Jesus.

  16. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.

  17. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,

  18. and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever.

  19. And of his kingdom there will be no end.

  20. And Mary said to the angel,

  21. How will this be, since I am a virgin?

  22. And the angel answered her,

  23. The Holy Spirit will come upon you,

  24. and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.

  25. Therefore the child to be born will be called Holy, the Son of God.

  26. And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son,

  27. and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.

  28. For nothing will be impossible with God.

  29. And Mary said,

  30. Behold, I am the servant of the Lord.

  31. Let it be to me according to your word.

  32. And the angel departed from her.

  33. In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country,

  34. to a town in Judah,

  35. and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.

  36. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary,

  37. the baby leaped in her womb.

  38. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,

  39. and she exclaimed with a loud cry,

  40. Blessed are you among women,

  41. and blessed is the fruit of your womb.

  42. And why is this granted to me,

  43. that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

  44. For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears,

  45. the baby in my womb leaped for joy.

  46. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment

  47. of what was spoken to her from the Lord.

  48. And Mary said,

  49. My soul magnifies the Lord,

  50. and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,

  51. for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.

  52. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed.

  53. For he who is mighty has done great things for me,

  54. and holy is his name.

  55. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.

  56. He has shown strength with his arm.

  57. He has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.

  58. He has brought down the mighty from their thrones,

  59. and exalted those of humble estate.

  60. He has filled the hungry with good things,

  61. and the rich he has sent away empty.

  62. He has helped his servant Israel in remembrance of his mercy,

  63. as he spoke to our fathers,

  64. to Abraham,

  65. and to his offspring forever.

  66. Well, good morning everyone.

  67. I'm one of the pastors here,

  68. if you happen to be a visitor and don't know me.

  69. Well, we've really heard it multiple times this morning

  70. from the introduction from the children's address.

  71. What makes you want to sing?

  72. Where do you find,

  73. when do you find yourself singing?

  74. So, sometimes it will be out loud,

  75. sometimes it will be in your head.

  76. I'm always intrigued by,

  77. some of my grandchildren tell me

  78. that they have a song in their head all the time.

  79. Not sure necessarily whether it's a good song or not,

  80. but there's a song in there for them.

  81. Sing is an expression of emotions.

  82. We've already heard that.

  83. A whole range of emotions can be expressed in song.

  84. And that means the songs we sing resonate

  85. with something in our heart,

  86. in our innermost being,

  87. the way we feel,

  88. the way we think,

  89. probably both.

  90. And that means we'll actually get tied in most

  91. in our private playlist

  92. to the songs that describe how we're feeling,

  93. that describe the longings of our heart,

  94. the songs that reflect what we think

  95. will answer the longings of our heart.

  96. They're likely the ones that are to be in our head

  97. most often,

  98. and give an expression most often.

  99. They're the songs that we think

  100. will not only deal with the ache in our heart,

  101. or the longing in our heart,

  102. but actually help us celebrate

  103. what we believe,

  104. and what we think will satisfy it.

  105. So, singing's a really big thing

  106. in every culture.

  107. And singing's a really big thing

  108. in the first chapters of Luke's account

  109. of the life of Jesus.

  110. There's a lot of singing

  111. around the birth of Jesus.

  112. There's perhaps the first

  113. and most bizarre flash mob in history.

  114. This massive crowd of angels appear

  115. and lead a bunch of smelly old shepherds

  116. in song.

  117. And then they just as quickly disappear again.

  118. But that's not enough.

  119. The shepherds themselves are on their feet

  120. yahooing and praising and singing

  121. at what they've just heard.

  122. The storyline in the first two chapters

  123. then is punctuated by the songs of Mary

  124. and Zachariah and Simeon.

  125. And I think the point of these

  126. in the storyline

  127. that's moving so quickly

  128. with so much incredible stuff happening,

  129. these songs punctuate it

  130. and they actually cause us to pause

  131. and reflect on what's developing

  132. at such a great rate.

  133. So the question then is why?

  134. What is there to sing about?

  135. Well, this morning as we've been told

  136. a three week series

  137. we're going to look at some of these

  138. three great songs of Christmas.

  139. And we do that to discover in depth

  140. to dig into the songs

  141. and see what it is that makes people sing.

  142. And these people in particular.

  143. And we do that in turn

  144. to help us celebrate Christmas

  145. as we ought to.

  146. To come back to what we might call

  147. the basics of Christmas.

  148. And just before I go ahead

  149. for those who aren't into singing

  150. and you can read a little bit more of this

  151. in the bulletin article.

  152. These are called songs

  153. but if you're a person who says

  154. I don't sing ever

  155. don't get left behind.

  156. Because they probably weren't put to music.

  157. It's more about an overflow.

  158. You remember that kids?

  159. That picture of overflow.

  160. It's more about just this bubbling up

  161. to the surface of praise and thanks

  162. to be part of what's happening

  163. in God's world at that time

  164. under God's hand.

  165. It's an expression of excitement.

  166. And it just bubbles to the surface

  167. in words.

  168. And in that sense therefore

  169. I believe that everybody here

  170. has a song in them.

  171. In that sense.

  172. Something that gets you excited.

  173. Something that gets you on your feet.

  174. It might only be to yahoo

  175. and cheer and stomp around.

  176. But it's something that will

  177. actually just cause you

  178. to express your delight.

  179. So let's look at what stirred Mary

  180. to overflow in praise to God.

  181. And I'm going to just give a bit of context

  182. which has largely been read here

  183. but not all of it.

  184. just to pick up

  185. the background

  186. to this

  187. magnificat

  188. as it's called.

  189. This praising of the Lord

  190. by Mary.

  191. So Luke begins

  192. his biography

  193. the account of the life

  194. of Jesus

  195. by focusing on

  196. a group

  197. who are

  198. described as the faithful ones.

  199. Ones who are waiting

  200. patiently

  201. for God to deliver

  202. on his promise of salvation.

  203. We've looked at that promise

  204. over the last four weeks

  205. in Malachi.

  206. So we've got a group here

  207. waiting patiently

  208. for that to come true

  209. some 400 years later.

  210. In chapter 2 verse 25

  211. you've got

  212. this guy called Simeon

  213. who's described here

  214. as waiting for the

  215. consolation

  216. of Israel.

  217. And in chapter 2 verse 38

  218. we've got a lady called

  219. Anna

  220. a prophetess

  221. and she was waiting

  222. for the redemption

  223. of Jerusalem.

  224. Those two terms

  225. I believe

  226. are used interchangeably.

  227. This was a group

  228. of faithful people

  229. people as we'll see

  230. in a minute

  231. people who are described

  232. as fearing the Lord

  233. and remember

  234. that connects us

  235. back to Malachi as well.

  236. People who

  237. were waiting

  238. for the comfort

  239. and healing

  240. of God's

  241. long promised

  242. long awaited

  243. Messiah

  244. who would come

  245. to God's

  246. needy people

  247. and bring healing

  248. and restoration.

  249. Now if you go back

  250. to chapter 1 verse 6

  251. we pick up the story

  252. with Zechariah.

  253. Again another

  254. direct connection

  255. into the wording

  256. let alone

  257. the theme

  258. of Malachi

  259. because Zechariah

  260. is busy

  261. as a priest

  262. busy

  263. observing

  264. the statutes

  265. and the commandments

  266. of the Lord.

  267. That's the language

  268. of Malachi

  269. those who feared

  270. the Lord.

  271. So here he is

  272. waiting

  273. patiently

  274. and faithfully

  275. with his wife

  276. Elizabeth

  277. as part of this

  278. other group

  279. setting their hearts

  280. to honour the Lord

  281. again

  282. reference to Malachi

  283. while they waited

  284. for the Lord

  285. to deliver

  286. on his promise.

  287. And suddenly

  288. angel

  289. Gabriel appeared

  290. and announced

  291. that their prayers

  292. were answered.

  293. Promise

  294. would now

  295. become reality

  296. as they were

  297. swept up

  298. in a series

  299. of incredible

  300. supernatural events.

  301. And then back

  302. into the passage

  303. that was read

  304. to this morning

  305. chapter 1 verse 26

  306. through to 38

  307. essentially

  308. God says

  309. he would override

  310. the natural

  311. process

  312. of getting

  313. pregnant

  314. in Elizabeth's

  315. cousin Mary

  316. and she would

  317. be with child

  318. and she would

  319. give birth

  320. to the greatest

  321. figure the world

  322. has ever seen.

  323. He would be

  324. truly human

  325. and truly God

  326. at the same time.

  327. He would be

  328. God's Messiah

  329. God's great

  330. King and Saviour

  331. who would rule

  332. God's world

  333. forever

  334. as promised

  335. more than

  336. about a thousand

  337. years earlier

  338. to King David.

  339. And then we pick

  340. up the story

  341. even closer

  342. in verse 39

  343. onwards.

  344. Mary then

  345. makes haste

  346. to visit

  347. Elizabeth

  348. who we're told

  349. is at least

  350. six months pregnant

  351. by this stage

  352. and that

  353. event

  354. is surrounded

  355. by more

  356. supernatural

  357. happenings

  358. and that's

  359. when the story

  360. becomes even

  361. more strange

  362. because

  363. you might

  364. well expect

  365. a very

  366. God-fearing

  367. woman like

  368. Elizabeth and her

  369. husband Zachariah

  370. to have words

  371. with Mary

  372. who remember

  373. is unmarried

  374. and pregnant

  375. at this stage.

  376. A shameful

  377. thing in the

  378. society of the day.

  379. Mary

  380. but rather

  381. than that

  382. moved by the

  383. Holy Spirit

  384. Elizabeth actually

  385. praises

  386. Mary

  387. and even

  388. Elizabeth's baby

  389. in her womb

  390. supernaturally

  391. acknowledges the

  392. importance of

  393. Mary's baby.

  394. so the

  395. background

  396. to Mary's

  397. song of

  398. praise

  399. is

  400. full of

  401. humanly

  402. impossible

  403. occurrences.

  404. It's full

  405. of

  406. God's

  407. activity

  408. it's full

  409. of God's

  410. Holy Spirit

  411. taking hold

  412. of people

  413. and moving

  414. them

  415. to do

  416. certain things

  417. and say

  418. certain things

  419. and remember

  420. that God's

  421. Holy Spirit

  422. is the

  423. enabler

  424. and the

  425. enforcer

  426. of God's

  427. plan and

  428. purpose.

  429. This is

  430. exactly what

  431. the prophets

  432. had predicted.

  433. They said

  434. the age of

  435. salvation

  436. when it

  437. finally came

  438. would be the

  439. age marked

  440. by God's

  441. Holy Spirit

  442. and incredible

  443. actions of

  444. God's Holy

  445. Spirit.

  446. A radical

  447. new work

  448. of God's

  449. Holy Spirit

  450. supernaturally

  451. in God's

  452. world.

  453. So everything

  454. points to the

  455. fact that

  456. this is

  457. God's

  458. age of

  459. salvation

  460. coming

  461. has arrived

  462. in this

  463. baby yet

  464. to be

  465. born.

  466. And

  467. it's

  468. clearly

  469. God's

  470. Spirit

  471. that

  472. motivates

  473. Mary's

  474. heart to

  475. overflow

  476. in a

  477. song of

  478. praise and

  479. thanks for

  480. the arrival

  481. of Jesus.

  482. So let's

  483. dig into it

  484. now.

  485. What is it

  486. precisely

  487. that overflows

  488. from Mary's

  489. heart?

  490. I want to

  491. just highlight

  492. two things.

  493. There's probably

  494. lots more

  495. that you could

  496. highlight.

  497. The first

  498. is delight

  499. in God's

  500. extravagant

  501. covenant

  502. blessing.

  503. So the

  504. words grace

  505. or favor,

  506. if you look

  507. back to

  508. chapter 1

  509. verse 28,

  510. the angel

  511. describes

  512. Mary as

  513. O favored

  514. one.

  515. And we

  516. pick that up

  517. again in

  518. the song.

  519. Words of

  520. grace and

  521. favor and

  522. love and

  523. mercy in

  524. verses 46

  525. through to

  526. 50.

  527. If you

  528. look at

  529. verse 46,

  530. Mary said,

  531. my soul

  532. magnifies the

  533. Lord.

  534. Now, the

  535. tense of

  536. that verb

  537. suggests that

  538. this is not

  539. something new

  540. for Mary.

  541. This is just

  542. a lifetime

  543. habit of

  544. praising God,

  545. addressing

  546. him in the

  547. most personal

  548. of ways as

  549. Yahweh.

  550. But now,

  551. she overflows

  552. with even

  553. greater delight

  554. as she tries

  555. to express

  556. her new

  557. sense of

  558. blessing from

  559. the Lord.

  560. If you

  561. look at

  562. verses 47

  563. through 50

  564. then,

  565. 47,

  566. 30,

  567. yeah,

  568. we've got to

  569. say on the

  570. one hand that

  571. there's no way

  572. Mary could

  573. possibly have

  574. understood

  575. everything that

  576. was happening

  577. to her.

  578. And that

  579. makes the

  580. story even

  581. more amazing

  582. because,

  583. therefore,

  584. her concept

  585. of being

  586. blessed was

  587. simply being

  588. swept up

  589. into God's

  590. planned

  591. intervention

  592. of healing

  593. and salvation,

  594. being swept

  595. up into God's

  596. long-promised,

  597. long-awaited

  598. time of

  599. salvation,

  600. salvation

  601. intervention.

  602. And if you

  603. notice in

  604. verse 47

  605. there,

  606. she delights

  607. to think

  608. that the

  609. Lord is

  610. committed to

  611. being her

  612. Savior.

  613. Savior.

  614. Now,

  615. again,

  616. step back

  617. and just

  618. think of

  619. it from

  620. a human

  621. perspective.

  622. Humanly

  623. speaking,

  624. Mary's

  625. plight was

  626. terrible.

  627. Unmarried,

  628. pregnant,

  629. quite possibly

  630. shamed in

  631. her immediate

  632. family and

  633. local community,

  634. and technically

  635. in terms of

  636. God's law,

  637. eligible to

  638. be stoned

  639. to death.

  640. Now,

  641. I don't

  642. think that

  643. law was

  644. enacted very

  645. much at

  646. that particular

  647. time,

  648. but that's

  649. what God's

  650. law said.

  651. Now,

  652. in that

  653. light,

  654. I think we

  655. could easily

  656. understand Mary

  657. being consumed

  658. with getting

  659. married,

  660. getting a

  661. husband,

  662. getting herself

  663. into a position

  664. where at least

  665. she could start

  666. rebuilding some

  667. sense of

  668. respectability in

  669. the community.

  670. But that's

  671. not what we

  672. see of Mary,

  673. that's not

  674. what we hear

  675. from Mary.

  676. Instead,

  677. she's consumed,

  678. I think,

  679. with an even

  680. greater plight,

  681. that is,

  682. her relationship

  683. with her

  684. Holy Lord.

  685. It seems to

  686. me that

  687. Mary's words

  688. reveal it.

  689. As she fears

  690. the Lord,

  691. she is very,

  692. very much

  693. aware of

  694. the fact that

  695. her greatest

  696. need is for

  697. Savior,

  698. without whom

  699. she could

  700. never be

  701. righteous or

  702. acceptable to

  703. the Lord,

  704. in spite of

  705. her best

  706. efforts of

  707. fearing God

  708. and trying to

  709. keep his

  710. commandments.

  711. So,

  712. in that

  713. context,

  714. therefore,

  715. Mary accepts

  716. the Lord's

  717. work through

  718. her yet-to-be-born

  719. baby.

  720. And I think

  721. this is the

  722. nub for

  723. Mary,

  724. thanking him

  725. that in

  726. this amazing,

  727. confusing,

  728. scary

  729. circumstance

  730. that's now

  731. entered her

  732. life,

  733. that God

  734. was giving

  735. her the

  736. Savior that

  737. she knew

  738. she needed.

  739. she recognized

  740. she was a

  741. nobody.

  742. No doubt,

  743. she was scared

  744. and overwhelmed

  745. by her

  746. circumstance,

  747. but also

  748. had total

  749. confidence in

  750. God's promise,

  751. in God's

  752. character,

  753. his mighty

  754. power to

  755. save her,

  756. his undeserved

  757. favor towards

  758. her,

  759. his grace

  760. and love

  761. for her,

  762. his incredible

  763. mercy and

  764. kindness

  765. towards her.

  766. In short,

  767. my friends,

  768. Mary was

  769. one who

  770. feared the

  771. Lord,

  772. setting her

  773. heart to

  774. honor him.

  775. Again,

  776. the language

  777. of Malachi.

  778. Setting her

  779. heart to

  780. esteem the

  781. Lord,

  782. to serve

  783. him,

  784. and she

  785. called herself

  786. a servant

  787. girl.

  788. She knew

  789. her

  790. Lord,

  791. the Lord

  792. God,

  793. was holy.

  794. She knew

  795. that he

  796. could be

  797. trusted

  798. to do

  799. what was

  800. right.

  801. She knew

  802. that he

  803. could be

  804. trusted to

  805. act in

  806. kindness

  807. and love

  808. towards her.

  809. But even

  810. then,

  811. I think,

  812. Mary's

  813. horizon is

  814. far,

  815. far bigger

  816. than

  817. herself.

  818. her joy

  819. is knowing

  820. that she

  821. was experiencing

  822. personally

  823. that which

  824. would become

  825. typical of

  826. God's desire

  827. to save

  828. his people

  829. generally.

  830. And it

  831. just reflected

  832. what God

  833. had been

  834. doing

  835. through the

  836. generations.

  837. God loves

  838. to see

  839. his people

  840. fear him

  841. and he

  842. loves to

  843. save his

  844. people.

  845. So I

  846. just want

  847. to pause

  848. there for a

  849. minute and

  850. sort of step

  851. sideways by

  852. asking the

  853. question,

  854. what is it

  855. to be

  856. blessed?

  857. What is it

  858. to be

  859. blessed?

  860. blessed?

  861. Now,

  862. in our

  863. world's

  864. terms,

  865. blessing is

  866. actually a

  867. very,

  868. very common

  869. word.

  870. I'm hearing

  871. it everywhere.

  872. But often

  873. in a very

  874. shallow and

  875. self-interested

  876. way.

  877. I understand,

  878. and I might

  879. be wrong here,

  880. I'm putting

  881. myself out

  882. here because

  883. I don't know

  884. about social

  885. media,

  886. but I

  887. understand

  888. it's a

  889. hashtag

  890. on social

  891. media.

  892. And it's

  893. used when

  894. things are

  895. going well,

  896. when people

  897. get what

  898. they want,

  899. usually

  900. associated

  901. with health

  902. or popularity,

  903. material

  904. possessions,

  905. or just

  906. warm,

  907. fuzzy

  908. relationships.

  909. I'm

  910. blessed.

  911. Now,

  912. there's no

  913. doubt about

  914. it,

  915. all those

  916. things can

  917. be really

  918. good.

  919. But here's

  920. the problem,

  921. if we think

  922. of blessing

  923. primarily in

  924. those terms,

  925. those actual

  926. things may

  927. lead us away

  928. from the

  929. Lord into

  930. a position

  931. of self-reliance.

  932. And

  933. autonomy.

  934. False

  935. security.

  936. And so,

  937. those things

  938. that we might

  939. call blessings

  940. may actually

  941. turn out

  942. not to be

  943. blessings at

  944. all.

  945. At least

  946. not in

  947. terms of

  948. scripture.

  949. So,

  950. I think

  951. that's a

  952. really important

  953. thing to

  954. take into

  955. this,

  956. because when

  957. Mary speaks

  958. of being

  959. blessed,

  960. I take it

  961. she's not

  962. thinking about

  963. becoming a

  964. famous celebrity

  965. in history.

  966. Now,

  967. that's what

  968. the Roman

  969. Catholic Church

  970. have made

  971. her.

  972. They've

  973. said,

  974. well,

  975. Mary's a

  976. special

  977. person in

  978. her own

  979. right,

  980. and she's

  981. worthy of

  982. worship in

  983. her own

  984. right.

  985. I don't

  986. think that's

  987. what Mary's

  988. trying to

  989. say here

  990. at all.

  991. Quite the

  992. opposite,

  993. in fact.

  994. I think

  995. she's in

  996. awe at

  997. being a

  998. total nobody,

  999. and yet,

  1000. knowing that

  1001. she's been

  1002. swept up into

  1003. God's unfolding

  1004. salvation package

  1005. in Jesus.

  1006. I think

  1007. Mary's point

  1008. is not

  1009. that people

  1010. will praise

  1011. her in

  1012. successive

  1013. generations,

  1014. but that

  1015. successive

  1016. generations

  1017. will praise

  1018. God for

  1019. the amazing

  1020. way he

  1021. honoured her

  1022. and nobody

  1023. in his

  1024. salvation

  1025. plan.

  1026. The two

  1027. are quite

  1028. different,

  1029. I think.

  1030. I hope I've

  1031. been able to

  1032. make the

  1033. difference clear,

  1034. but they

  1035. are quite

  1036. different.

  1037. So,

  1038. I think

  1039. for Mary,

  1040. to be

  1041. blessed is

  1042. to be in

  1043. God's

  1044. hands.

  1045. To be

  1046. blessed is

  1047. to know

  1048. that God

  1049. has extended

  1050. his favour

  1051. to you

  1052. in grace,

  1053. mercy,

  1054. and love

  1055. in a

  1056. saving way.

  1057. To be

  1058. blessed is

  1059. to be

  1060. drawn towards

  1061. the Lord,

  1062. by the

  1063. Lord,

  1064. drawn to

  1065. himself,

  1066. in a

  1067. greater

  1068. understanding

  1069. of his

  1070. character,

  1071. and his

  1072. plan,

  1073. and his

  1074. promise,

  1075. in a

  1076. greater

  1077. delight

  1078. of him.

  1079. If you

  1080. look back

  1081. at verse

  1082. 38 and

  1083. verse 45,

  1084. 38 says,

  1085. Mary said,

  1086. Behold,

  1087. I am the

  1088. servant of

  1089. the Lord.

  1090. Let it be

  1091. to me

  1092. according to

  1093. your word.

  1094. Verse 45,

  1095. Blessed is

  1096. she who

  1097. believed that

  1098. there would

  1099. be a

  1100. fulfilment

  1101. of what

  1102. was spoken

  1103. to her

  1104. from the

  1105. Lord.

  1106. To be

  1107. blessed

  1108. is to

  1109. be enabled

  1110. by God's

  1111. Spirit

  1112. to be

  1113. all in

  1114. with God's

  1115. purposes,

  1116. no matter

  1117. how confusing,

  1118. scary,

  1119. and hard

  1120. they are

  1121. to understand.

  1122. To be

  1123. blessed is

  1124. to be

  1125. able by

  1126. God's

  1127. Spirit

  1128. to trust

  1129. God

  1130. in every

  1131. circumstance,

  1132. even those

  1133. circumstances

  1134. which have

  1135. consequences

  1136. which threaten

  1137. to

  1138. overwhelm us.

  1139. To be

  1140. blessed

  1141. is to be

  1142. so secure

  1143. in God's

  1144. care,

  1145. as Mary was,

  1146. that immediate

  1147. circumstances

  1148. of shame,

  1149. confusion,

  1150. fear,

  1151. and uncertainty

  1152. are trumped

  1153. by that

  1154. bubbling

  1155. overflow

  1156. of trust,

  1157. confidence,

  1158. in delight.

  1159. Lord, I

  1160. have no

  1161. idea what

  1162. you're doing

  1163. in my life,

  1164. says Mary,

  1165. but this I

  1166. know,

  1167. you're to be

  1168. trusted.

  1169. And in that

  1170. action in my

  1171. life, I

  1172. delight.

  1173. In your

  1174. action in my

  1175. life, I

  1176. delight.

  1177. Now, if

  1178. I'm right in

  1179. that, in

  1180. sort of

  1181. spelling out a

  1182. little bit

  1183. more about

  1184. blessing,

  1185. then surely

  1186. such blessing

  1187. is something

  1188. to sing

  1189. about,

  1190. isn't it?

  1191. Surely that

  1192. should get us

  1193. on our feet,

  1194. cheering and

  1195. yahooing,

  1196. even if we

  1197. can't sing

  1198. two notes

  1199. together.

  1200. Second thing

  1201. then, Mary

  1202. delights,

  1203. in God's

  1204. faithfulness to

  1205. his promises.

  1206. The word

  1207. mercy in

  1208. verse 50

  1209. is the

  1210. covenant

  1211. faithfulness

  1212. hesed.

  1213. God's

  1214. faithfulness,

  1215. God's

  1216. covenant

  1217. faithfulness to

  1218. his promises,

  1219. verses 53

  1220. and 55.

  1221. Mary

  1222. understands,

  1223. and in

  1224. part, I'll

  1225. just make this

  1226. point in

  1227. passing, I

  1228. don't have

  1229. time to

  1230. delve into

  1231. it, but

  1232. she understands

  1233. because she

  1234. has habit

  1235. habit,

  1236. she habitually

  1237. has studied

  1238. God's word

  1239. and she

  1240. knows it

  1241. from back

  1242. to front

  1243. and she

  1244. knows what

  1245. God's

  1246. character is

  1247. like, she

  1248. knows what

  1249. God's promises

  1250. are.

  1251. God's

  1252. love.

  1253. And therefore,

  1254. she knows

  1255. that what's

  1256. happening around

  1257. her and

  1258. involving her,

  1259. even though she

  1260. can't really

  1261. understand it at a

  1262. micro level, at a

  1263. micro level, is

  1264. God acting to

  1265. fulfill his

  1266. promises in the

  1267. age of salvation.

  1268. salvation.

  1269. And that's what

  1270. produces her

  1271. overflow of

  1272. delight.

  1273. And I think

  1274. she understands

  1275. in the

  1276. connections made

  1277. there that

  1278. her own

  1279. personal

  1280. experience

  1281. is God's

  1282. showcase

  1283. for salvation

  1284. coming to

  1285. all his

  1286. people because

  1287. the focus

  1288. on the horizon

  1289. gets bigger as

  1290. we move into

  1291. verses 50

  1292. following.

  1293. And

  1294. that's

  1295. God is

  1296. going to

  1297. bring the

  1298. same

  1299. salvation to

  1300. his servant

  1301. nation Israel,

  1302. chapter verse

  1303. 54.

  1304. Remember that

  1305. servant nation

  1306. Israel we've

  1307. said over the

  1308. last four weeks

  1309. from Malachi,

  1310. failed God in

  1311. every way

  1312. imaginable.

  1313. And yet God

  1314. intends to

  1315. bring graciously,

  1316. lovingly, and

  1317. mercifully his

  1318. salvation to

  1319. that pathetic

  1320. nation.

  1321. why?

  1322. Again, another

  1323. connection back

  1324. into Malachi,

  1325. verse 54.

  1326. He has

  1327. helped his

  1328. servant Israel

  1329. in remembrance.

  1330. That's a key

  1331. word.

  1332. Remember back in

  1333. Malachi last

  1334. week, chapter

  1335. 3, verse

  1336. 16, 17,

  1337. 18?

  1338. The Lord

  1339. remembered.

  1340. That is, it's

  1341. not as if the

  1342. Lord's got a

  1343. scratchy memory

  1344. like me, but

  1345. the Lord

  1346. remembered.

  1347. That is, he

  1348. committed

  1349. himself afresh

  1350. to delivering

  1351. on the

  1352. promises he's

  1353. made of

  1354. old.

  1355. God

  1356. remembered or

  1357. was true to

  1358. his promise,

  1359. a promise that

  1360. was made to

  1361. Abraham some

  1362. 1800 years

  1363. earlier.

  1364. A promise that

  1365. said to Abraham,

  1366. one of your

  1367. descendants would

  1368. finally reverse the

  1369. effects of sin,

  1370. finally save God's

  1371. people, finally

  1372. restore the

  1373. Garden of Eden

  1374. conditions where

  1375. once again God's

  1376. people would

  1377. worship him in

  1378. spirit and in

  1379. truth.

  1380. And that would

  1381. be a global

  1382. restoration and

  1383. reversal.

  1384. So Mary's

  1385. delighted because

  1386. the stuff she's

  1387. built her life

  1388. on, the

  1389. scriptures, is

  1390. not just ancient

  1391. history.

  1392. It's reality.

  1393. And it's reality

  1394. growing in her

  1395. womb at that

  1396. very moment.

  1397. such is God's

  1398. command of

  1399. history and

  1400. commitment to

  1401. his promise.

  1402. And verses

  1403. 51, 52, and

  1404. 53 spell out in

  1405. Old Testament

  1406. pictures and

  1407. concepts what

  1408. this coming

  1409. salvation would

  1410. look like and

  1411. mean for God's

  1412. people.

  1413. To understand

  1414. these pictures,

  1415. we need to go

  1416. back to Isaiah

    Isaiah 49:9–13

  1417. chapter 49,

  1418. verses 9 through

  1419. 13.

  1420. There's many,

  1421. many places you

  1422. could go back

  1423. to.

  1424. I'm just touching

  1425. you down on one.

  1426. Isaiah, where

  1427. the spiritual

  1428. state of Israel

  1429. was described

  1430. by Isaiah in

  1431. precisely these

  1432. terms.

  1433. So these words

  1434. here are

  1435. metaphors.

  1436. The proud, the

  1437. mighty, the

  1438. exalted are

  1439. those who have

  1440. turned their

  1441. back on God

  1442. and rely on

  1443. their own

  1444. goodness for

  1445. the future.

  1446. by contrast, the

  1447. lowly, the

  1448. hungry, the

  1449. servant are

  1450. those who know

  1451. their sin, their

  1452. inability to

  1453. deal with it

  1454. themselves and

  1455. look to the

  1456. Lord alone to

  1457. deal with it.

  1458. So Mary's

  1459. delighted because

  1460. God's cabinet

  1461. faithfulness to

  1462. his promises would

  1463. bring a great

  1464. reversal.

  1465. And that great

  1466. reversal would

  1467. also be a great

  1468. restoration.

  1469. salvation, the

  1470. reality of which

  1471. would be seen in

  1472. successive generations

  1473. as King Jesus

  1474. actively rules his

  1475. world and rules his

  1476. people, gathering

  1477. them into a

  1478. relationship with

  1479. him forever.

  1480. the relationship

  1481. that he originally

  1482. created them for as

  1483. image bearers, the

  1484. relationship that he's

  1485. always intended them

  1486. to have, and the

  1487. relationship in this

  1488. age of salvation that

  1489. he now delights in

  1490. creating for them

  1491. through his own

  1492. death, which we'll

  1493. see coming in

  1494. subsequent years.

  1495. Now again, I just

  1496. stop and say,

  1497. whoa, that's

  1498. something to sing

  1499. about, isn't

  1500. it?

  1501. God's faithfulness

  1502. to his promise.

  1503. So, just let me

  1504. wrap up then by

  1505. saying that we

  1506. need to get in

  1507. the spirit for

  1508. Christmas with

  1509. Mary.

  1510. Now, hopefully,

  1511. even though I've

  1512. stumbled over my

  1513. words multiple times

  1514. already, that

  1515. wasn't a stumbling

  1516. over my words.

  1517. I meant that in

  1518. the way I said

  1519. that.

  1520. I didn't say,

  1521. let's get into the

  1522. spirit of Christmas

  1523. as advertising and

  1524. romantic nonsense

  1525. encourages us.

  1526. That's a spirit of

  1527. self-indulgence, a

  1528. spirit that actually

1529. makes us lose sight of

  1530. the true joy of

  1531. Christmas.

  1532. things.

1533. But we should get in

  1534. the spirit for

  1535. Christmas so that

  1536. we might overflow,

  1537. like Mary did, with

  1538. joy and praise for

  1539. all the reasons that

  1540. Mary did.

1541. Again, I just want to

  1542. highlight two, and

  1543. there's multiple

  1544. things I could

  1545. highlight here, but

  1546. time just allows me

  1547. to highlight two.

  1548. Let's delight in the

  1549. supernaturalism of

  1550. God's intervention in

  1551. the birth of King

  1552. Jesus.

  1553. Now, this might

  1554. sound like a strange

  1555. application, and

1556. maybe it is, but it

  1557. works in my mind.

  1558. We cannot

  1559. understand God's

  1560. world and God's

  1561. salvation plan, we

  1562. cannot understand the

  1563. gospel without

  1564. accepting God's

  1565. supernatural activity

  1566. in his world and

  1567. intervention in his

  1568. world.

  1569. God's method of

  1570. delivering his

  1571. promised Savior and

  1572. King into our

  1573. world is totally

  1574. surprising.

1575. If it was left to

  1576. us from a human

  1577. perspective, Jesus

  1578. would have come from

  1579. a high-flying, a

  1580. Jewish, a priestly

  1581. family in Israel.

1582. Or if he was going

1583. to have to be a

  1584. Roman, he would

  1585. have been the

  1586. child of a

  1587. senatorial family,

  1588. somebody with

  1589. clout, somebody

  1590. with influence,

  1591. somebody who was

  1592. somebody.

  1593. God's intervention

  1594. in his world is

  1595. totally surprising.

  1596. It doesn't use any

  1597. of the categories that

  1598. we would reach for

  1599. or be comfortable

  1600. with.

  1601. And that's before we

  1602. even start talking

  1603. about the supernatural

  1604. occurrences around

  1605. about the birth of

  1606. Jesus.

  1607. God's delivery of his

  1608. promise to renew

  1609. broken, sinful

  1610. people through the

  1611. work of his Holy

  1612. Spirit is, from

  1613. start to finish,

  1614. supernatural.

  1615. Now, here's the rub

  1616. for us, you see.

  1617. As Christians, we live

  1618. in a world where

  1619. anything truly

  1620. supernatural is just

  1621. rubbish.

  1622. So our so-called

  1623. scientific world says,

1624. unless I can see it

1625. and explain it, then it

  1626. can't be real.

  1627. Now, of course, in

  1628. reality, behind the

  1629. scenes, our world is

  1630. just as engaged in

  1631. spiritual thinking as

  1632. ever.

  1633. It's just that we've

  1634. gone into weird

  1635. Eastern mysticism and

  1636. First Nations occult

  1637. type thinking.

1638. But the general run of

  1639. society says, you know,

  1640. we're a scientific

  1641. age.

  1642. If you're going to

  1643. believe anything, then

1644. it has to be fully

  1645. understandable or it

  1646. can't be real.

1647. Well, I say to you, as

  1648. Christians, we mustn't

  1649. allow our commitment to

  1650. God's supernatural world

  1651. and God's supernatural

  1652. activity in his world,

  1653. particularly when it

  1654. comes to the events

  1655. surrounding the

  1656. gospel.

1657. We mustn't allow that to

  1658. be eroded.

1659. We mustn't give up on

  1660. that.

  1661. Regardless of what our

  1662. world would push us

  1663. to.

  1664. We mustn't allow our

  1665. confidence to be

  1666. dismantled by an

  1667. unbelieving so-called

  1668. scientific world.

  1669. Luke records these

  1670. events as facts.

  1671. Remember at the very

  1672. start of Luke's

  1673. biography, he says he

  1674. researched.

1675. In other words, Luke is

  1676. claiming to be

  1677. scientific.

  1678. He's done the research,

  1679. he's talked to

  1680. eyewitnesses, and he

  1681. records these things as

  1682. those things are beyond

  1683. reasonable doubt.

  1684. They're fact.

  1685. friends, the story of

  1686. Jesus is not mythology.

1687. And we've got to be so

  1688. careful we don't allow

  1689. all the mythology and

  1690. the romantic nonsense

  1691. that overlays Christmas

1692. these days to rob us of

  1693. the true supernatural

  1694. reality of God's

  1695. intervention in our world

  1696. that we call Christmas,

  1697. that we celebrate as

  1698. Christmas.

  1699. we rightly reject the

  1700. sloppy sentimentality of

1701. our world in respect to

1702. Christmas, but we dare not

  1703. reject the supernatural

  1704. occurrences that delivered

1705. King Jesus as a baby into

  1706. our human world.

1707. God came into our world to

1708. save us, to renew us, to

1709. take up residence in us

1710. forever by his Holy Spirit.

1711. From start to finish, it's

  1712. about God's supernatural

  1713. intervention.

  1714. intervention.

1715. Let's celebrate also being truly

1716. blessed, therefore, by God in

  1717. Jesus.

  1718. Ephesians 1, the well-known

1719. verse, we have every blessing in the

1720. spiritual realm in Christ Jesus.

1721. But do we believe it?

1722. Jumping, sort of bouncing from Mary to

1723. us, we can ask the question, are we

1724. ashamed to be identified with either the

1725. supernaturalism that goes around Christ,

1726. or are we ashamed per se to be identified

  1727. with Christ?

1728. Because to be identified with Christ, to be

1729. identified with a brutal death,

1730. crucifixion, to be identified with the

1731. concept of sin and need and being bad

1732. people in a world that ravishes all those

  1733. concepts.

1734. It is actually easy, I think, to be

  1735. ashamed of Jesus.

1736. I know there's been times to my shame

1737. that I've put my head down and been

1738. quiet, but I know jolly well there was an

1739. opportunity, I was interacting with

1740. somebody down the street or wherever to

  1741. speak.

1742. Why was I so old?

1743. Maybe lots of reasons, but one chief one

1744. might well be tired of a shame.

1745. The message at times can sound so weird.

1746. The big cry of society is to be on the

  1747. right side of history.

  1748. It's a very modern cry.

1749. The question we've got to ask is, are we

1750. convinced, I mean absolutely convinced, that

1751. we're in the right side of history in

  1752. Christ?

  1753. Christ.

1754. If we are, then I take it we'll proclaim his

1755. name and his gospel in triumph, not slink

  1756. around in defeat.

1757. Are we convinced like Mary that we're

1758. blessed among mankind to be called

1759. brothers with Christ, brothers and sisters

  1760. with Christ?

1761. Again, I would suggest that if we are, if we

1762. do believe that, then surely we'll be singing

1763. from the rooftops, determined also to model

1764. God's blessings in our daily lives.

1765. If we believe that Jesus really is the Christmas gift that

1766. keeps on giving, keeps on giving identity and purpose and

1767. satisfaction and security and the pathway home to heaven.

1768. Surely then, that ought to get us on our feet, cheering and

  1769. yahoo.

  1770. Pray with me.

1771. Lord, we're blighted by familiarity.

1772. Stories that we have, for the likes of myself, Lord, I've

1773. grown up with, I've never known anything other than parents

1774. who've taught me the Bible.

1775. And while, Lord, that's such a wonderful blessing in

1776. itself, it puts me in danger of familiarity.

1777. And as the saying goes, familiarity can breed contempt.

1778. Lord, sharpen our minds, enliven our hearts to the beauty of your

1779. salvation intervention in the birth of Jesus.

1780. Stir us up, Lord, by your spirit to overflow with joy, to have that

1781. private playlist in our minds that constantly thanks you for your

1782. grace and mercy and love and commitment.

1783. And help us, Lord, to overflow, not in words in our mind or even

1784. songs in our lips, but help us to overflow into lives that model the

1785. grace and love and favor we've experienced.

1786. In Jesus' name I pray.

  1787. Amen.

1788. Thank you very much for listening.
