  1. Good morning. Good morning to those on Zoom as well. My name is Bo, I'm one of the elders.

  2. Happy New Year as well.

  3. This morning, we are going to go to a story of a young man who is not that happy after all.

  4. We will see why. Initially, the title of the sermon was The Failure of Success.

  5. Then, as I prepared the sermon in detail, I realized that not many of us consider ourselves successful,

  6. but the sermon is relevant to all of us.

  7. And the bigger picture is we are looking at the idea, the concept of eternal life.

  8. And so I changed the title to Eternal Life.

  9. Let's pray first before we start.

  10. Almighty God, we thank you for this new year and the hope that we have ahead of us because of you.

  11. We want to see the Lord Jesus Christ as we go into your words this morning.

  12. May you teach us your ways. Thank you, Lord. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

  13. So we will be reading from the book of Mark, chapter 10, verses 17 to 22.

    Mark 10:17–22

  14. So for this first part of the sermon, this one I will read from Mark 10, 17.

  15. And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him,

  16. Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  17. So in this reading, we come across a man who runs after Jesus and kneels before him in front of everybody else.

  18. So we can see that Mark is trying to tell us, someone who is quite desperate and also genuine,

  19. wanting to know something, to learn something.

  20. And also the fact that he kneels before Jesus is showing his great respect for Jesus

  21. and addresses Jesus as his teacher, and he wants to know what he can do to gain eternal life.

  22. I think this man would have observed Jesus for quite some time, I mean, for him to do that,

  23. to trust that Jesus would be able to tell him what to do to gain eternal life.

  24. And also, Telstra says this man would have been searching for the answer for quite some time.

  25. So he's desperate, because he couldn't find it elsewhere.

  26. He might have asked many people, but he just couldn't see it from anyone.

  27. But somehow, he knew that, he knows that Jesus knows the answer.

  28. Unlike the religious leaders of his days, who thought Jesus was a deceiver,

  29. because of the way Jesus handled Sabbath or other topics,

  30. this man understands that Jesus has something he has been looking for.

  31. This man also thinks that the secret of eternal life is closely guarded by Jesus and his followers.

  32. He therefore kneels before Jesus publicly,

  33. hoping that Jesus would see his sincerity and tell him the secret.

  34. And who is this man?

  35. From the help of the other Gospels, Matthew and Luke,

  36. we can gather that this man is young, maybe in his 20s,

  37. that he is younger than Jesus.

  38. He is also wealthy and in a position of power.

  39. And he's usually referred to as a rich young ruler.

  40. So this man has everything everyone in the world would like to have.

  41. Youth, power, wealth.

  42. So we know that when we are young,

  43. we usually do not have power or wealth to enjoy life.

  44. And then as we get older,

  45. we are too busy trying to gain wealth and power

  46. and don't have time to enjoy life.

  47. And when we get quite old,

  48. even if we have gained enough power and wealth,

  49. we become physically too weak to enjoy life.

  50. So that is the problem of life.

  51. And this man has everything.

  52. He's got power, he's got wealth,

  53. he's got youth on his side.

  54. What more does he want?

  55. Why is he not happy?

  56. In the sense that he's quite desperate.

  57. Desperate.

  58. He wants to learn something important.

  59. We can see that his soul is restless.

  60. The same as our souls, we are restless.

  61. We are always looking for something to satisfy our souls.

  62. We think that strength, wealth,

  63. or being in a position of power would satisfy our souls.

  64. We envy someone who is more successful than us,

  65. thinking that we will be happier if we are just as successful.

  66. This rich young ruler is telling us that he has been there

  67. and his soul remains restless.

  68. His success brings him a sense of emptiness.

  69. In the sense that you already have what everybody is looking for.

  70. What next?

  71. It doesn't satisfy.

  72. What else can he do for his life?

  73. It's also like a Christmas toy that a child has been looking forward to.

  74. But finding it no longer enjoyable the day after Boxing Day.

  75. You get what you look for every year after year,

  76. and then you don't enjoy it anymore.

  77. Even if you do enjoy it for a long time,

  78. the thing will not last anyway.

  79. Everything breaks down eventually.

  80. So this young man also knows that he is going to die one day.

  81. Then what?

  82. He sees Jesus living a restful life,

  83. despite having no wealth or position.

  84. And he also knows that Jesus is not a fool.

  85. I mean, if we don't think much about life,

  86. we just go easy for everything.

  87. But he knows that Jesus is the wisest man he has ever met.

  88. Because when Jesus teaches,

  89. he teaches as someone who knows what he is talking about.

  90. And he teaches with authority.

  91. And when Jesus faces opposition,

  92. he remains calm and composed.

  93. Jesus does not flatter or belittle someone in his interaction with people.

  94. He does not need to flatter someone to gain respect,

  95. or belittle someone to feel better on himself.

  96. So Jesus just has a life that is very different.

  97. A life that is superior to his life,

  98. at least in quality,

  99. and most likely in quantity as well.

  100. So this young man seeking for life

  101. is not only long-lasting,

  102. but also meaningful.

  103. This morning,

  104. on the first day of a new year,

  105. I wonder what we are seeking

  106. for this year.

  107. A better job?

  108. A spouse?

  109. A family?

  110. I mean, these are all important things in life.

  111. But this young man

  112. wants more.

  113. He wants eternal life.

  114. Because he knows that without eternal life,

  115. all other things in life are not meaningful

  116. at the end.

  117. And without eternal life,

  118. it's just like going through Christmas

  119. every day without your loved one.

  120. And it's just,

  121. there's no basis

  122. for us to enjoy

  123. anything in life.

  124. If you do have eternal life,

  125. will you seek,

  126. if you do not have eternal life,

  127. will you seek it today?

  128. If you already have eternal life,

  129. will you seek

  130. something bigger than yourself

  131. this year?

  132. Yeah.

  133. We continue with the story.

  134. Mark 10,

  135. verse 18a,

  136. the first part of it.

  137. And Jesus said to him,

  138. Why do you call me good?

  139. No one is good

  140. except God alone.

  141. It seems that

  142. Jesus was not,

  143. he's not answering

  144. the young man's

  145. question about how to

  146. inherit eternal life.

  147. But goodness is very important.

  148. If the young man

  149. does not understand

  150. what goodness is,

  151. he will not understand

  152. what eternal life is.

  153. And that's why Jesus

  154. had to first of all

  155. deal with this question

  156. about goodness first.

  157. How many times

  158. we use the word good

  159. every day?

  160. We say good morning,

  161. good girl,

  162. good boy.

  163. He's good at sports

  164. or say I'm good.

  165. What do we mean

  166. by good?

  167. It's just

  168. there could be

  169. many meanings.

  170. And what does

  171. this young man mean

  172. when he calls Jesus

  173. as a good teacher?

  174. Does he mean

  175. Jesus is a competent

  176. teacher?

  177. Does he mean

  178. Jesus is a helpful

  179. teacher?

  180. Or does he mean

  181. Jesus is a godly

  182. teacher?

  183. So there are many

  184. meanings in the word

  185. good.

  186. But when we say

  187. someone is a good

  188. person,

  189. we usually mean

  190. that that person

  191. gives us what we

  192. want.

  193. So for example,

  194. a father may

  195. tell a boy,

  196. a good boy,

  197. when the boy

  198. obeys his

  199. instruction to

  200. take the rubbish

  201. out,

  202. then the father

  203. feels happy

  204. and so there's

  205. a good boy.

  206. Or a teenager

  207. who went to

  208. borrow the car

  209. from the father

  210. and the father

  211. lent him the car

  212. for whatever reason

  213. and he said

  214. this is a good

  215. father.

  216. And so that is

  217. how we usually

  218. use the word

  219. good.

  220. And we think

  221. that a government

  222. is a good government

  223. if it fulfills

  224. our wishes.

  225. We also think

  226. that someone is

  227. good if it makes

  228. other people happy,

  229. like a sports

  230. person,

  231. a movie star

  232. because they

  233. entertain people

  234. and they're

  235. doing a good job

  236. and so we can

  237. see just recently

  238. the last two days

  239. the news about

  240. so and so died

  241. after how many

  242. years.

  243. They're all in

  244. entertainment

  245. or fashion design

  246. and those are

  247. considered good

  248. people because

  249. they contributed

  250. to the society

  251. and this is how

  252. we use the word

  253. good.

  254. and the young

  255. men would also

  256. think that he

  257. himself is a

  258. good person

  259. because he

  260. had kept

  261. God's laws.

  262. But when he

  263. sees Jesus

  264. he sense that

  265. Jesus' goodness

  266. is different

  267. to his.

  268. Just like the

  269. Pharisees,

  270. to the Pharisees

  271. Jesus did not

  272. appear to be

  273. a good person

  274. because he

  275. does the work

  276. of healing

  277. on Sabbath day

  278. he breaks

  279. the Sabbath law

  280. to the Pharisees.

  281. To this young

  282. man Jesus'

  283. goodness seemed

  284. to be above

  285. the law.

  286. Do you see

  287. that the laws

  288. are there to

  289. restrain and

  290. to train

  291. bad people?

  292. If we are

  293. inherently good

  294. God does not

  295. need to give

  296. any law

  297. for us to live

  298. by.

  299. Just like

  300. if we are

  301. all

  302. considerate

  303. drivers

  304. we don't

  305. need to

  306. have all

  307. those

  308. root laws.

  309. We would

  310. be careful

  311. and we would

  312. not

  313. drink and

  314. dry all

  315. those things.

  316. So the laws

  317. are there

  318. just because

  319. we are not

  320. good.

  321. God

  322. and

  323. we

  324. usually do

  325. good because

  326. we want to

  327. gain something.

  328. We want to

  329. be respected

  330. or we want

  331. to avoid

  332. punishment.

  333. We want to

  334. get a reward.

  335. Jesus does

  336. good because

  337. he is good.

  338. Jesus does

  339. not do

  340. good to

  341. exchange for

  342. something.

  343. He does

  344. good simply

  345. because he

  346. is good.

  347. and that

  348. is the

  349. goodness

  350. of God.

  351. And you

  352. may think

  353. that when

  354. you spend

  355. time with

  356. someone who

  357. is inherently

  358. good,

  359. you will

  360. enjoy his

  361. company.

  362. The truth

  363. is that

  364. someone who

  365. is inherently

  366. good will

  367. most likely

  368. offend us

  369. or threaten

  370. us.

  371. Jesus'

  372. goodness

  373. threatens so

  374. many people

  375. that they

  376. rejected him

  377. and killed

  378. him.

  379. When I

  380. was a

  381. teenager,

  382. I joined,

  383. I wasn't

  384. a Christian

  385. there.

  386. I joined

  387. Red Cross

  388. Youth Cadet

  389. Group.

  390. The group

  391. leader was

  392. a Christian

  393. and the

  394. only Christian

  395. that I

  396. ever met.

  397. And

  398. he was

  399. there's a

  400. bunch of

  401. us who

  402. are quite

  403. stupid

  404. and young

  405. under him.

  406. and this

  407. leader was

  408. stern.

  409. He would

  410. not tolerate

  411. unruly

  412. behavior.

  413. But he

  414. was also

  415. kind to

  416. each of

  417. us.

  418. So he

  419. treated us

  420. with respect.

  421. Some other

  422. leaders label him

  423. as a holy,

  424. holy person,

  425. jokingly behind

  426. his back.

  427. So that's

  428. why, you

  429. see, because

  430. he's got that

  431. goodness that we

  432. didn't have.

  433. There are

  434. people who

  435. would not

  436. tolerate him.

  437. but some

  438. of us

  439. were

  440. attracted

  441. and I

  442. was

  443. attracted

  444. by his

  445. goodness

  446. that I

  447. didn't

  448. have.

  449. And so

  450. I asked

  451. him

  452. why.

  453. Then he

  454. explained

  455. why he

  456. had what

  457. Jesus.

  458. And he

  459. told me

  460. about Jesus

  461. dying for

  462. our sins

  463. when we

  464. were being

  465. unkind

  466. towards God.

  467. And that's

  468. how I

  469. became a

  470. Christian

  471. eventually.

  472. what is

  473. eternal

  474. life?

  475. In

  476. John 17

  477. 3,

  478. Jesus

  479. said,

  480. and this

  481. is eternal

  482. life,

  483. that they

  484. know you,

  485. the only

  486. true God

  487. and Jesus

  488. Christ

  489. only have

  490. saints.

  491. When we

  492. know God

  493. through Jesus

  494. Christ and

  495. become part

  496. of his

  497. goodness,

  498. that is

  499. eternal

  500. life.

  501. In the

  502. presence of

  503. goodness,

  504. evil cannot

  505. last forever

  506. and evil

  507. cannot be

  508. enjoyable.

  509. Jesus

  510. wants this

  511. young man

  512. to realize

  513. that he

  514. is talking

  515. to the

  516. good God

  517. and that

  518. he cannot

  519. inherit

  520. eternal

  521. life without

  522. first being

  523. part of

  524. God's

  525. goodness.

  526. Because

  527. God's

  528. goodness

  529. will not

  530. tolerate

  531. him in

  532. his state

  533. of badness

  534. or evil.

  535. And that's

  536. why Jesus

  537. first of all

  538. mentioned

  539. about goodness.

  540. Hopefully we

  541. can also

  542. understand that.

  543. we continue

  544. with Mark

  545. 10,

  546. 18b

  547. until 21.

  548. So Jesus

  549. said,

  550. you know

  551. the commandments.

  552. Do not

  553. murder,

  554. do not

  555. commit adultery,

  556. do not

  557. steal,

  558. do not

  559. bear false

  560. weakness,

  561. do not

  562. defraud,

  563. honour your

  564. father and

  565. mother.

  566. And he

  567. said to

  568. him,

  569. teacher,

  570. all this

  571. I have

  572. kept from

  573. my youth.

  574. And Jesus

  575. looking at

  576. him,

  577. loved him,

  578. said to

  579. him,

  580. you lack

  581. one thing,

  582. go sell

  583. all that

  584. you have

  585. and give

  586. to the

  587. poor,

  588. and you

  589. will have

  590. treasure in

  591. heaven,

  592. and come

  593. follow me.

  594. one of the

  595. expressions of

  596. goodness is

  597. love.

  598. Keeping the

  599. commandment does

  600. not necessarily

  601. mean that a

  602. person has

  603. love for

  604. God or

  605. for his

  606. neighbours.

  607. love.

  608. Corinthians

  609. chapter 13

  610. verse 3

  611. it says,

  612. if I give

  613. away all

  614. I have

  615. and if I

  616. deliver up

  617. my body

  618. to be

  619. burned

  620. but have

  621. not love,

  622. I gain

  623. nothing.

  624. So

  625. love

  626. doing

  627. all the

  628. commandments

  629. does not

  630. mean that we

  631. have this

  632. love.

  633. However,

  634. for someone

  635. who has

  636. love,

  637. he will

  638. automatically

  639. leave out

  640. the

  641. commandments.

  642. Jesus is

  643. love.

  644. Jesus does

  645. not keep

  646. the

  647. commandments.

  648. He leaves

  649. the

  650. commandments.

  651. That is

  652. the difference.

  653. Goodness is

  654. exclusive.

  655. It does

  656. not tolerate

  657. what is

  658. not good.

  659. Love,

  660. likewise,

  661. does not

  662. tolerate

  663. what is

  664. not good.

  665. Looking at

  666. this young

  667. man,

  668. Jesus loves

  669. him.

  670. Jesus says

  671. only God

  672. is good.

  673. But Jesus

  674. also sees

  675. some goodness

  676. in this

  677. young man.

  678. What is

  679. the goodness

  680. that Jesus

  681. sees in

  682. this young

  683. man?

  684. One of the

  685. things that

  686. I think

  687. Jesus loves

  688. is this

  689. young man's

  690. curiosity.

  691. This young

  692. man wants

  693. to know

  694. more about

  695. life.

  696. All of us

  697. are born

  698. with

  699. curiosity.

  700. We want

  701. to learn.

  702. We want

  703. to know.

  704. A wise

  705. parent or

  706. teacher knows

  707. how to

  708. help a

  709. child to

  710. develop

  711. his

  712. curiosity.

  713. Unfortunately,

  714. in our

  715. society,

  716. most of

  717. us grew

  718. up in

  719. a work

  720. for

  721. external

  722. reward

  723. system.

  724. We

  725. study hard

  726. or work

  727. hard mostly

  728. because we

  729. want to be

  730. better than

  731. other people

  732. or to get

  733. recognition

  734. for our

  735. hard work.

  736. Not so

  737. much because

  738. we want

  739. to know.

  740. We want

  741. to know

  742. more about

  743. this

  744. situation.

  745. world that

  746. God created.

  747. We want

  748. to know

  749. more about

  750. life.

  751. And that

  752. is part

  753. of the

  754. thing that

  755. God created

  756. in us.

  757. Curiosity

  758. to know

  759. to grow.

  760. So besides

  761. curiosity,

  762. Jesus also

  763. loved this

  764. young man's

  765. desire for

  766. meaning in

  767. life.

  768. We may

  769. not know

  770. how to

  771. define a

  772. meaningful

  773. life,

  774. but the

  775. Bible defines

  776. it as a

  777. life of

  778. glory,

  779. honor,

  780. and

  781. immortality.

  782. That is in

  783. Romans 2.7.

  784. To those

  785. who by

  786. patience

  787. in well

  788. doing,

  789. seek for

  790. glory and

  791. honor and

  792. immortality,

  793. he will

  794. give eternal

  795. life.

  796. God created

  797. us for

  798. glory,

  799. honor,

  800. and

  801. immortality.

  802. And that

  803. is also

  804. eternal life.

  805. Eternal

  806. life is not

  807. only everlasting,

  808. but also a

  809. life that is

  810. glorious and

  811. honorable.

  812. honorable.

  813. We have

  814. all sinned

  815. and fallen

  816. short of

  817. the glory

  818. of God.

  819. We live

  820. a life that

  821. we are

  822. ashamed of.

  823. We would

  824. if we

  825. think about

  826. it,

  827. that our

  828. life is

  829. neither

  830. glorious or

  831. honorable

  832. at the

  833. end.

  834. This young

  835. man knows

  836. that something

  837. is missing

  838. in his

  839. life,

  840. despite him

  841. keeping

  842. the

  843. commandments,

  844. despite his

  845. wealth,

  846. despite his

  847. position.

  848. glory and

  849. honor in

  850. Jesus'

  851. life.

  852. He decides

  853. what Jesus

  854. has,

  855. and Jesus

  856. loves him

  857. for that.

  858. But Jesus

  859. does not

  860. love this

  861. young man's

  862. love for

  863. money.

  864. Jesus

  865. says that

  866. we cannot

  867. serve God

  868. and money

  869. at the

  870. same time.

  871. When we

  872. love money,

  873. it implies

  874. that we

  875. think with

  876. our own

  877. achievement,

  878. we can

  879. give ourselves

  880. glory and

  881. honor.

  882. God loves

  883. what he

  884. has made

  885. in us,

  886. but God

  887. does not

  888. love what

  889. we have

  890. made for

  891. ourselves.

  892. Jesus

  893. loved this

  894. young man.

  895. God's love

  896. is not

  897. sentimental.

  898. It is a

  899. love that

  900. does not

  901. tolerate what

  902. is not good

  903. in a person.

  904. Jesus told

  905. this young

  906. man to

  907. do a

  908. difficult

  909. thing,

  910. to replace

  911. the love

  912. of money

  913. with the

  914. love of

  915. God.

  916. God

  917. loves

  918. God.

  919. God

  920. loves

  921. love

  922. to be

  923. all

  924. inclusive.

  925. God's

  926. love is

  927. exclusive.

  928. God

  929. loves

  930. exclusively

  931. what is

  932. good.

  933. While God

  934. does not

  935. love what

  936. is not

  937. good,

  938. God

  939. does not

  940. just sit

  941. there

  942. resenting

  943. what is

  944. not

  945. good.

  946. God

  947. does

  948. something

  949. to change

  950. what is

  951. not

  952. good

  953. into

  954. what is

  955. good.

  956. He

  957. sent

  958. Jesus

  959. to the

  960. world.

  961. How do we

  962. know Jesus

  963. has eternal

  964. life?

  965. Because

  966. Jesus

  967. is good

  968. and because

  969. Jesus

  970. has love

  971. that

  972. loves

  973. what is

  974. good.

  975. We come

  976. to Mark

  977. 10,

  978. 22,

  979. possibly one

  980. of the saddest

  981. words in

  982. the Bible.

  983. Dishardened

  984. by the

  985. saying,

  986. he went

  987. away

  988. sorrowful,

  989. for he

  990. had great

  991. possessions.

  992. this young

  993. man has

  994. seen

  995. Jesus'

  996. glory

  997. and

  998. honor.

  999. He also

  1000. knows that

  1001. his own

  1002. achievements

  1003. do not

  1004. satisfy

  1005. and do

  1006. not last

  1007. long.

  1008. He knows

  1009. that there

  1010. is no

  1011. eternal

  1012. life in

  1013. money,

  1014. but money

  1015. can give

  1016. him

  1017. identity.

  1018. That is,

  1019. he is a

  1020. rich person,

  1021. he is a

  1022. successful

  1023. person.

  1024. Money can

  1025. give him

  1026. security,

  1027. where he

  1028. can live

  1029. for a

  1030. long time

  1031. in comfort

  1032. because of

  1033. money,

  1034. and money

  1035. can give

  1036. him pleasure.

  1037. He can

  1038. afford

  1039. many

  1040. entertainments.

  1041. If Jesus

  1042. lets him

  1043. keep his

  1044. money,

  1045. he would

  1046. have no

  1047. problem

  1048. following

  1049. Jesus

  1050. immediately,

  1051. I think.

  1052. Even if

  1053. Jesus

  1054. let him

  1055. keep half

  1056. of his

  1057. money,

  1058. I think

  1059. he would

  1060. still

  1061. consider

  1062. following

  1063. Jesus.

  1064. After all,

  1065. with his

  1066. money,

  1067. he can

  1068. support

  1069. Jesus'

  1070. mission as

  1071. well.

  1072. he just

  1073. could not

  1074. give up

  1075. all his

  1076. possessions.

  1077. It's too

  1078. much for

  1079. him to

  1080. give up.

  1081. He

  1082. didn't

  1083. understand

  1084. why Jesus

  1085. wants him

  1086. to give

  1087. up

  1088. everything.

  1089. So he

  1090. walks away

  1091. sorrowfully.

  1092. In a

  1093. way,

  1094. I'm glad

  1095. that he

  1096. walks away

  1097. in sorrow

  1098. and not

  1099. in anger.

  1100. If you

  1101. have run

  1102. after Jesus

  1103. and kneeled

  1104. before him

  1105. in front

  1106. of many

  1107. people,

  1108. and if

  1109. Jesus

  1110. implies

  1111. that

  1112. keeping

  1113. the

  1114. commandments

  1115. will

  1116. give

  1117. you

  1118. eternal

  1119. life,

  1120. and now

  1121. Jesus

  1122. says there

  1123. is still

  1124. one more

  1125. thing to

  1126. do,

  1127. and this

  1128. one more

  1129. thing is

  1130. for you

  1131. to give

  1132. all you

  1133. have to

  1134. the poor,

  1135. how will

  1136. you feel?

  1137. You have

  1138. worked hard

  1139. to get

  1140. your wealth.

  1141. Those people

  1142. have done

  1143. nothing to

  1144. deserve your

  1145. wealth.

  1146. Would you

  1147. not think

  1148. that this

  1149. is most

  1150. unfair?

  1151. When you

  1152. walk away

  1153. in anger

  1154. instead of

  1155. in sorrow,

  1156. but this

  1157. young man

  1158. walk away

  1159. in sorrow,

  1160. that shows

  1161. that he

  1162. believes

  1163. what Jesus

  1164. tells him

  1165. is true,

  1166. but the

  1167. cost of

  1168. eternal life

  1169. is too

  1170. high,

  1171. he cannot

  1172. give up

  1173. all that

  1174. he has.

  1175. Over the

  1176. years,

  1177. I have seen

  1178. many patients

  1179. with liver

  1180. disease because

  1181. of alcohol.

  1182. So,

  1183. no one

  1184. wants to

  1185. die of

  1186. liver

  1187. disease.

  1188. It's a

  1189. painful death.

  1190. I told

  1191. them if

  1192. they wanted

  1193. to live

  1194. longer,

  1195. they needed

  1196. to give

  1197. up alcohol

  1198. and start

  1199. to live

  1200. a healthier

  1201. lifestyle.

  1202. Not many

  1203. people could

  1204. give up

  1205. alcohol

  1206. easily.

  1207. A lot

  1208. of people

  1209. would say,

  1210. yeah,

  1211. I will do

  1212. it,

  1213. but they

  1214. never do

  1215. it.

  1216. After a

  1217. few months,

  1218. you do

  1219. their blood

  1220. test,

  1221. their liver

  1222. function is

  1223. still as

  1224. bad,

  1225. or it's

  1226. not worse.

  1227. And some

  1228. who try

  1229. to cut

  1230. down,

  1231. they will

  1232. cut

  1233. down,

  1234. I will

  1235. just

  1236. drink a

  1237. little

  1238. bit.

  1239. But they

  1240. couldn't

  1241. either,

  1242. because once

  1243. they start

  1244. drinking a

  1245. little bit,

  1246. they couldn't

  1247. stop.

  1248. They just

  1249. keep drinking.

  1250. And some

  1251. already knew

  1252. they couldn't

  1253. do it,

  1254. so they

  1255. could only

  1256. walk away

  1257. in sorrow,

  1258. because

  1259. there is

  1260. the dilemma.

  1261. I can't

  1262. give up

  1263. alcohol,

  1264. I must

  1265. drink it.

  1266. I know

  1267. that it's

  1268. going to

  1269. kill me,

  1270. but I

  1271. still

  1272. drink it.

  1273. I

  1274. know

  1275. you

  1276. cannot,

  1277. but do

  1278. you want

  1279. to?

  1280. If they

  1281. want to,

  1282. I can

  1283. help them.

  1284. They have

  1285. medication,

  1286. they can

  1287. help people

  1288. to extend

  1289. for

  1290. alcohol.

  1291. But

  1292. some people

  1293. just didn't

  1294. ask for

  1295. help,

  1296. and they

  1297. just

  1298. walk away.

  1299. The deadly

  1300. problem of

  1301. being successful

  1302. is that we

  1303. become self-sufficient

  1304. and self-reliant

  1305. in society

  1306. in general.

  1307. Because

  1308. successful people

  1309. are so used

  1310. to be admired

  1311. and followed,

  1312. they tend to

  1313. think that if

  1314. they cannot

  1315. solve a

  1316. problem,

  1317. no one

  1318. else can.

  1319. Many of

  1320. us,

  1321. when we

  1322. look back

  1323. to our

  1324. younger

  1325. days,

  1326. we might

  1327. have many

  1328. regrets,

  1329. because we

  1330. did not

  1331. seek advice

  1332. from people

  1333. who have

  1334. more experience

  1335. than us,

  1336. or we

  1337. did not

  1338. listen to

  1339. their advice,

  1340. the many

  1341. things that

  1342. we decide

  1343. in life.

  1344. When we

  1345. are young,

  1346. we thought

  1347. that we

  1348. knew

  1349. everything.

  1350. This young

  1351. man has

  1352. made his

  1353. first step

  1354. of seeking

  1355. advice from

  1356. someone who

  1357. he respected

  1358. as a good

  1359. teacher.

  1360. He cannot

  1361. make one

  1362. more step

  1363. to ask

  1364. for help.

  1365. He does

  1366. not need

  1367. to walk

  1368. away in

  1369. sorrow.

  1370. He just

  1371. needs to

  1372. admit that

  1373. he needs

  1374. help to

  1375. give up

  1376. all he

  1377. has.

  1378. If this

  1379. young man

  1380. seeks further

  1381. help from

  1382. Jesus and

  1383. sticks with

  1384. Jesus,

  1385. he will

  1386. soon find

  1387. out that

  1388. to be

  1389. with Jesus

  1390. is eternal

  1391. life.

  1392. He will

  1393. find out

  1394. that someone

  1395. who has

  1396. eternal

  1397. life will

  1398. overflow

  1399. with goodness

  1400. and love.

  1401. He will

  1402. find out

  1403. that someone

  1404. who has

  1405. eternal

  1406. life can

  1407. give all

  1408. he has

  1409. to help

  1410. people who

  1411. do not

  1412. deserve any

  1413. help.

  1414. He will

  1415. find out

  1416. that the

  1417. more he

  1418. gives away,

  1419. the more

  1420. he is

  1421. full and

  1422. he will

  1423. find rest.

  1424. Today,

  1425. Jesus'

  1426. answer to

  1427. anyone who

  1428. seeks eternal

  1429. life is

  1430. the same.

  1431. Give up

  1432. your dependence

  1433. on anything

  1434. that gives

  1435. you glory

  1436. and honour

  1437. in the

  1438. world and

  1439. follow me.

  1440. We are

  1441. more privileged

  1442. than this

  1443. young man

  1444. because we

  1445. live on

  1446. this side

  1447. of the

  1448. cross and

  1449. know that

  1450. God has

  1451. given us

  1452. his own

  1453. son to

  1454. die for

  1455. our sins.

  1456. And if

  1457. he has

  1458. given us

  1459. his own

  1460. son,

  1461. will he

  1462. not give

  1463. us all

  1464. things along

  1465. with him?

  1466. Let us

  1467. pray.

  1468. Oh,

  1470. we are so

  1471. thankful for

  1472. this life

  1473. that we

  1474. have in

  1475. Christ.

  1476. Father,

  1477. we want

  1478. to live

  1479. this life

  1480. worthy of

  1481. calling in

  1482. this year

  1483. 2023.

  1484. Help us

  1485. to do so.

  1486. In Jesus'

  1487. name we

  1488. pray.

  1489. Amen.
