  1. We're going to read some sections in Acts of how the gospel spread to and from Antioch.

  2. And we're going to start in Acts 11, starting in verse 19, going to verse 26, and then we'll read a couple in Acts 13.

  3. Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen,

  4. travelled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews.

  5. But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Hellenists also, preaching the Lord Jesus.

  6. And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord.

  7. The report of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.

  8. When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose.

  9. For he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith.

  10. And a great many people were added to the Lord.

  11. So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch.

  12. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people.

  13. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians.

  14. Now we'll read from Acts 13, 1-3.

  15. Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon, who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manan, a lifelong friend of Herod the Tetrarch, and Saul.

  16. While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,

  17. Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.

  18. Then after fasting and praying, they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

  19. And now verses 47-49.

  20. Well, the things Dave said to us earlier, wonderful principles, and yet they set the bar impossibly high, it seems to me.

  21. Since the goal of mission is to create true worship.

  22. That is to see people everywhere in our world discover true joy and gladness in the greatness and love of God.

  23. Since that's part of mission.

  24. And since the fuel of mission is worship.

  25. That is, we can't commend that which we don't already cherish for ourselves.

  26. And the third thing that Dave mentioned is that people aren't neutral.

  27. The people we will speak to in their natural born state are hardwired to autonomy.

  28. To rebellion against God.

  29. Determined to pursue their own glory, not God's glory.

  30. Determined to seek life apart from God, not in God.

  31. Determined to seek life apart from God's glory.

  32. Since those three things are already on the table, then the question we have to ask is,

  33. Who on earth can have the confidence to do mission?

  34. What people, what person, what community could think they could possibly do mission?

  35. Why would we possibly think and proceed with confidence to make people see and do that which they neither want to see nor do?

  36. In the moment, can we venture with confidence into this new partnership with Matt and Grace in a far away land?

  37. Well, the answer, thankfully, this morning is a resounding yes.

  38. We can have confidence.

  39. And I want just briefly to reference the church in Antioch that Jess has just read to us about this morning as a model for our confidence.

  40. And it works like this.

  41. We get God's sovereign purpose in salvation dovetailing precisely with what the ordinary believers were doing on the ground.

  42. The backstory of the church of Antioch catalogues a series of unremarkable people.

  43. Unremarkable people who had been confronted by the gospel of Jesus, spoken to them by equally unremarkable people.

  44. Some of them Jewish, some of them non-Jewish.

  45. But in common, they were followers of Christ.

  46. And they were all fleeing persecution.

  47. And wherever they went, and particularly into the city of Antioch in Syria, they just naturally overflowed.

  48. They gossiped the gospel.

  49. We believe it was a relatively young church at this stage.

  50. But when you flick to Acts 13, verse 1, we see immediately this church was quite ethnically and culturally diverse.

    Acts 13:1

  51. And in the day, that would have been a recipe for disaster and division.

  52. But notably in this church, it was their new identity in Christ that dominated their thinking.

  53. In Acts 11, verse 26, we're told that for the first time, they were united around the term Christian.

    Acts 11:26

  54. Each a servant of Jesus, each a believer, each a Christian, that trumped all other natural divisions, ethnically, culturally, and even gender terms.

  55. And it was the basis, this new identity in Christ was the basis for a deep unity.

  56. A unity of mind and purpose in a diverse community.

  57. And we see that another thing about this church, therefore, because of their backstory,

  58. they were actually deliberately and prayerfully missional in outlook.

  59. What does that mean?

  60. Well, it means very, very simply.

  61. They were so excited by the gospel that they'd experienced themselves and so radically changed them from the inside out.

  62. That, as Dave said, their excitement just overflowed.

  63. And overflowed into a passionate desire to hand on the baton.

  64. To be on mission for Jesus.

  65. To see others experience the same thing that they themselves had experienced when the gospel came to them.

  66. And the new delight in the Lord as their greatest treasure was not just expressed by a few individuals,

  67. but it characterized the church.

  68. The church got together and under the leading of the Holy Spirit,

  69. determined to send out Paul and Barnabas.

  70. To repeat the job that they had experienced for themselves in Antioch.

  71. At a very, very practical level, I think we can say this,

  72. that the believers in Antioch were passionate to do what they could do.

  73. That is, pull the resources, pick suitable people,

  74. and send them out to wherever they could go to speak about Jesus,

  75. to speak about gospel.

  76. Now, why did they do that?

  77. Well, I think the other side of the story, the other side of the coin,

  78. the dovetail part,

  79. is that they did it because they were confident

  80. that the Lord would do what only he could do.

  81. The Lord would do what only he could do.

  82. That is, change hearts.

  83. Give new life to spiritually dead people.

  84. And we're told in Acts chapter 11,

    Acts 11 chapter mention

  85. that many were converted in Antioch

  86. as God's purposes in salvation

  87. and the efforts of the believers dovetailed.

  88. That's Acts chapter 11.

    Acts 11 chapter mention

  89. Then when we come to Acts chapter 13,

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  90. we see the same thing happening down the track.

  91. Acts chapter 13, verse 47, 48, and 49.

    Acts 13:47

  92. And as many as were appointed for eternal life believed.

  93. Brothers and sisters, Matt and Grace,

  94. these are the principles to hang our hats on.

  95. These principles are still true today.

  96. They're the only reason for confidence in a world,

  97. as we speak the gospel,

  98. into a world that doesn't want to hear it.

  99. It's the reason we have confidence

  100. to speak the gospel into our own families,

  101. into our local community here,

  102. and into a faraway land.

  103. It's the confidence we have

  104. underpinning this partnership

  105. that we're still early days,

  106. but we're growing into

  107. and excited about with Matt and Grace.

  108. It seems to us a very simple thing.

  109. We are sending them out.

  110. That's what we can do.

  111. That's what they can do.

  112. And our confidence is

  113. that that will dovetail

  114. with God's purposes in salvation,

  115. with as many as are appointed to believe

  116. in that particular part of the world.

  117. We have a wonderful motivation

  118. and unlimited opportunity.

  119. The whole of the story of Acts,

  120. especially Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  121. is about, as Dave's already highlighted,

  122. our God is committed

  123. to making his name great

  124. in his own world.

  125. He's a missionary God.

  126. We see in Acts 1,

  127. he's got big plans,

  128. a big horizon,

  129. his whole world,

  130. the ends of the earth.

  131. He will be worshipped.

  132. He will be adored

  133. by a vast multitude

  134. of redeemed sinners or rebels.

  135. He will,

  136. as he tells us

  137. in other parts of Scripture,

  138. build a great resurrection community

  139. called the church,

  140. a community of died-for people,

  141. each individually brought in

  142. through the process of the gospel,

  143. brought into the kingdom.

  144. So, my friends,

  145. our mission,

  146. our engagement and mission,

  147. must have the same big horizons.

  148. We must be bold

  149. and have the same big plans

  150. to the ends of the earth.

  151. Why?

  152. Well, because it simply reflects

  153. who we are in Christ.

  154. God.

  155. And it's a reflection

  156. of our great God in us.

  157. And as Dave said before,

  158. as those who have experienced

  159. the full extent

  160. of God's saving grace,

  161. even when we were lost,

  162. even when we were

  163. in full pursuit of autonomy

  164. and not in the least interested

  165. in worshipping the Lord,

  166. for those who have experienced

  167. God's grace in that situation,

  168. well,

  169. we would naturally,

  170. we will naturally

  171. overflow with desire

  172. to see others in our world

  173. experience exactly the same

  174. rescue and renewal.

  175. people.

  176. So, my friends,

  177. we ought never to think

  178. about mission

  179. primarily in terms of duty

  180. or responsibility.

  181. that just won't last.

  182. that just won't last.

  183. Mission is primarily

  184. about ourselves

  185. overflowing

  186. in worship.

  187. a particular expression

  188. of that worship

  189. is in our partnership

  190. forming and growing

  191. and deepening

  192. with Matt and Grace.

  193. And my friends,

  194. it also means

  195. that mission

  196. is not just

  197. for keen beings

  198. for the people

  199. who might just have

  200. a particular bent

  201. for mission

  202. in the church.

  203. Mission is

  204. for all of God's people

  205. because it's something

  206. that should overflow

  207. from each of us.

  208. we shouldn't have

  209. to drum up support.

  210. We shouldn't have

  211. to whip people

  212. into ongoing

  213. resilient

  214. continuation

  215. of this stuff.

  216. It should be

  217. bubbling up.

  218. And we can be confident

  219. in that situation

  220. that God will gather

  221. his people powerfully

  222. through ordinary folk.

  223. I just think

  224. this is a beautiful

  225. scenario here

  226. in Antioch.

  227. The believers,

  228. and I remember

  229. I said at the start

  230. that they were unremarkable.

  231. The unremarkable

  232. believers

  233. in Antioch,

  234. in the church

  235. of Antioch,

  236. had every qualification

  237. necessary

  238. for mission.

  239. What are those

  240. qualifications?

  241. Well, they themselves

  242. had experienced

  243. forgiveness

  244. and renewal

  245. in Christ.

  246. they themselves

  247. had experienced

  248. the joy

  249. of turning

  250. to the Lord

  251. in thankfulness

  252. and new delight

  253. for new life.

  254. They spoke

  255. out of the overflow

  256. of their hearts.

  257. They knew the gospel.

  258. They knew

  259. that it worked.

  260. They felt resourced

  261. and equipped

  262. by Paul and Barnabas

  263. in Acts chapter 11.

    Acts 11 chapter mention

  264. They were there

  265. and taught them

  266. for a year.

  267. It's not told

  268. specifically what

  269. they's taught,

  270. but my guess is

  271. that Paul and Barnabas

  272. filled in the gaps

  273. with,

  274. well, now you're Christians.

  275. Let's go back

  276. and look at the back story

  277. from the very start

  278. from Genesis

  279. and see God's plan

  280. right the way through.

  281. These guys now felt

  282. resourced and equipped

  283. having been instructed

  284. in God's plan

  285. of salvation

  286. focused on the Lord

  287. Jesus Christ.

  288. We're told in Acts 13

    Acts 13:2

  289. verse 2

  290. they were in tune

  291. with the powerful

  292. work of the Holy Spirit

  293. within them

  294. and leading them

  295. as a church family.

  296. They overflowed

  297. in prayer

  298. asking the Lord

  299. to act for his own glory

  300. by rescuing

  301. and renewing

  302. many others

  303. through their efforts

  304. to get the gospel

  305. out far and wide.

  306. Do you hear

  307. what the qualifications were?

  308. They wanted

  309. what God wanted

  310. and they used

  311. the spiritual tools

  312. that the Lord

  313. had provided them.

  314. That's not too complicated

  315. is it?

  316. Their excitement

  317. and determination

  318. to be on mission

  319. for Jesus

  320. dovetails

  321. as I said before

  322. with God's purpose

  323. and plan of salvation.

  324. Let me bring you back

  325. to Acts 13

  326. 47 to 49 again.

  327. And we see the scope

  328. again

  329. of mission

  330. picking up

  331. a quotation

  332. from Isaiah.

  333. I have made you

  334. a light

  335. for the Gentiles

  336. that you may

  337. bring salvation

  338. to the ends

  339. of the earth.

  340. God's long time

  341. plan

  342. for salvation

  343. God's big horizon

  344. and when the Gentiles

  345. heard this

  346. they began rejoicing

  347. and glorifying

  348. the word of the Lord

  349. and as many

  350. as were appointed

  351. to eternal life

  352. believed

  353. and the word

  354. of the Lord

  355. was spreading

  356. throughout the whole region.

  357. the church

  358. in Antioch

  359. pretty young

  360. sent Paul

  361. and Barnabas

  362. out

  363. to speak

  364. the gospel

  365. to long

  366. that people

  367. might experience

  368. the same gospel

  369. renewal

  370. that they had

  371. experienced

  372. to be converted

  373. to see new

  374. resurrection

  375. communities

  376. or the church

  377. birthed

  378. and what do we see?

  379. God graciously

  380. used their efforts

  381. to bring the gospel

  382. to specific people

  383. appointed to salvation

  384. and eternal life.

  385. the church's job

  386. get people

  387. to hear

  388. about Jesus

  389. that's something

  390. we can do

  391. the Lord's job

  392. bring them

  393. through Jesus

  394. into the kingdom

  395. forever

  396. how good is that

  397. Triss?

  398. and so

  399. we see

  400. a repeat

  401. the very thing

  402. that they

  403. themselves

  404. had experienced

  405. as these

  406. rag tag people

  407. coming into

  408. Antioch

  409. fleeing persecution

  410. from down around

  411. the Judean region

  412. they just walked

  413. into town

  414. and suddenly

  415. they were hearing

  416. this guy

  417. called Jesus

  418. and suddenly

  419. they were converted

  420. and suddenly

  421. there was a church

  422. and then suddenly

  423. the church

  424. was taken up

  425. by the Holy Spirit

  426. and they wanted

  427. to repeat it

  428. and here it is

  429. they're reproducing

  430. themselves

  431. as it were

  432. and nothing

  433. brings greater

  434. glory to the Lord

  435. that's Paul's

  436. point repeatedly

  437. in Ephesians

  438. when he writes

  439. to the believers

  440. at Ephesus

  441. particularly in

  442. chapter 1

  443. we see over

  444. and over again

  445. he says

  446. all spiritual

  447. blessings are

  448. ours in Christ

  449. to the praise

  450. of God's glory

  451. everything in the

  452. world has been

  453. made for the

  454. sake of Christ

  455. and the church

  456. to the praise

  457. of God's glory

  458. and so it goes

  459. on and on

  460. over and over

  461. again

  462. every church

  463. has formed

  464. according to

  465. Ephesians

  466. that crosses

  467. the natural

  468. boundaries of

  469. hostility and

  470. division

  471. and brings a

  472. new unity

  473. in identity

  474. in Christ

  475. in Christianity

  476. for the praise

  477. of his glory

  478. Matt and

  479. Grace

  480. brothers and

  481. sisters in

  482. this church

  483. family

  484. we can

  485. reach out

  486. boldly

  487. and with

  488. confidence

  489. with the

  490. renewing

  491. freeing

  492. gospel of

  493. Jesus

  494. knowing very

  495. well that our

  496. world is not

  497. interested in the

  498. message it most

  499. needs to hear

  500. and most likely

  501. will despise

  502. when they first

  503. hear it

  504. why

  505. well

  506. because God

  507. will go before

  508. us

  509. to create

  510. his own

  511. glory

  512. we have

  513. great motivation

  514. we have

  515. wonderful

  516. opportunity

  517. both in our

  518. local community

  519. and in a

  520. distant land

  521. now with

  522. Matt and

  523. Grace

  524. we have all

  525. the weapons

  526. required

  527. for the task

  528. the living

  529. word of God

  530. the enabling

  531. power of the

  532. Holy Spirit

  533. blasting

  534. unbelief

  535. out of hard

  536. hearts

  537. weapon of

  538. prayer

  539. so my

  540. friends

  541. let's

  542. let's be

  543. excited

  544. let's be

  545. bold

  546. in our

  547. commitment

  548. commitment

  549. to and

  550. support of

  551. Matt and

  552. Grace

  553. make no

  554. mistake

  555. it will

  556. cost us

  557. but in

  558. my

  559. experience

  560. and I

  561. presume in

  562. your

  563. experience

  564. we don't

  565. quibble

  566. over the

  567. cost of

  568. things that

  569. we're really

  570. passionate about

  571. there always

  572. seems to be

  573. money for

  574. those things

  575. doesn't

  576. there

  577. so that

  578. means the

  579. question is

  580. what's our

  581. passion

  582. we

  583. commend

  584. that and

  585. grace

  586. to God's

  587. goodness

  588. and God's

  589. keeping in

  590. the next

  591. weeks and

  592. months

  593. and we

  594. urge them

  595. to

  596. pursue

  597. faithfulness

  598. rather than

  599. success in

  600. our world's

  601. terms
