  1. Good morning, church family.

  2. Like Dave said, we're reading from Psalm 96.

  3. O sing to the Lord a new song.

  4. Sing to the Lord all the earth.

  5. Sing to the Lord, bless his name.

  6. Tell of his salvation from day to day.

  7. Declare his glory among the nations,

  8. his marvellous works among all the peoples.

  9. For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised.

  10. He is to be feared above all gods.

  11. For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,

  12. but the Lord made the heavens.

  13. Splendour and majesty are before him.

  14. Strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

  15. Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples.

  16. Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

  17. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name.

  18. Bring an offering and come into his courts.

  19. Worship the Lord in the splendour of holiness.

  20. Tremble before him all the earth.

  21. Say among the nations, the Lord reigns.

  22. Yes, the world is established.

  23. It shall never be moved.

  24. He will judge the peoples with equity.

  25. Let the heavens be glad and let the earth rejoice.

  26. Let the sea roar and all that fills it.

  27. Let the fields exult and everything in it.

  28. Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord.

  29. For he comes.

  30. For he comes to judge the earth.

  31. He will judge the world in righteousness

  32. and the peoples in his faithfulness.

  33. Well, Matt and Grace, you're probably feeling a mixture of things.

  34. I'm not quite sure what you'll be feeling, but a bit of excitement.

  35. But I'm also guessing this is one of the most uncertain times of your life

  36. that you've experienced.

  37. With the future, very uncertain.

  38. So this morning we really want to just commend the truths of God's word

  39. that us elders, we know you already know these things.

  40. We wouldn't be sending you if you didn't.

  41. But it's no trouble to us to encourage you to fix your eyes on these things.

  42. And it's good for us as a church family to remember these things as well.

  43. So I think as a church family, we're starting a new year.

  44. I don't know about you, but I'm setting plans for the year.

  45. I consider the hardships that I'm facing, that my brothers and sisters are facing,

  46. and we want to find meaning and strength in them.

  47. And I think in all that, we need to come back to that ultimate question of

  48. if the Lord has delivered us out of the world,

  49. it would be so much better if we were with Christ right now.

  50. So why has he got us here, sending us back into the world?

  51. So this morning, yeah, I'm going to be talking to you, Matt and Grace, a lot.

  52. But it's really for our whole church family to be hearing these things as well.

  53. So why on earth would you leave all that's familiar,

  54. your country with all the rights and security that are easily accessible,

  55. and your parents and wider family and taking their granddaughter away,

  56. your home that you built that we love to fill stuff with,

  57. and the comfort and nourishment of belonging to an established church,

  58. why would you leave all that behind and go into the unknown,

  59. to the people and language and culture you don't know?

  60. You can only plan a few days ahead of you, and even then, that's not certain.

  61. You're trying to take on a new skill set from what you've vocationally done thus far.

  62. And you know that you're going to a people who don't want to hear what you've got to say.

  63. You know that your goal is an impossible task,

  64. that people who are happy living for themselves, apart from God,

  65. will turn to Christ in faith and joy.

  66. What's going to keep you grounded?

  67. How are you going to keep your bearings?

  68. I think you need to keep clear what the basis of mission is.

  69. What is the fundamental reason you're going?

  70. You've got to keep this clear in your minds.

  71. So what is the purpose of mission?

  72. What is the basis of mission in the world?

  73. I think many Christians might answer,

  74. because people are lost and in danger of judgment.

  75. And that's true.

  76. If we were, with our compassion as we went about mission,

  77. someone would be very cold and heartless.

  78. Something wouldn't be right.

  79. But it's not the basis.

  80. The basis is in Psalm 96.

  81. Because from verse 4,

  82. The most basic truth of all reality

  83. is that there is one God,

  84. Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  85. Now, in our present time,

  86. many people are worshipping,

  87. I think, Linal Messi at the moment.

  88. After winning the World Cup,

  89. I saw in the news feed

  90. that one guy got a tattoo of Messi on his forehead.

  91. There's an option.

  92. You could get Jesus on your forehead if you wanted.

  93. Anyway, that's not in my script.

  94. Linal Messi.

  95. People are worshipping him,

  96. but his splendour.

  97. Just consider his splendour.

  98. Why people are worshipping this guy.

  99. It is so limited to a soccer field.

  100. And his splendour is already fading in his 30s.

  101. He's going to have to retire soon.

  102. And like Pele before him,

  103. he's going to be dead one day.

  104. And people will be cheering for someone else.

  105. People are worshipping this man.

  106. And what puny splendour.

  107. But then compare that to the splendour of the Lord.

  108. Like, I got to be in Jindabyne over the Christmas break

  109. and just getting away from the light of the city.

  110. Again, you just get the night sky.

  111. My dad was trying to film auroras.

  112. Just the galaxy that praises him.

  113. The sun that comes up every day declaring his mercy,

  114. his goodness to mankind.

  115. You just look at the creativity in this room of all the personalities.

  116. And that's just the reflected glory of God that we see in creation.

  117. Like, what splendour the Lord has.

  118. That the oceans roar his greatness.

  119. That splendour.

  120. And his majesty is like no other person in authority you've ever met.

  121. Like, some people in authority, you shake before them.

  122. But scripture tells us the people who have got even a glimpse of his majesty

  123. haven't just shaken.

  124. They've fallen down dead as though dead before him.

  125. His majesty is that great.

  126. All strength belongs to him.

  127. All beauty is from him.

  128. It reflects his own beauty.

  129. He is beauty.

  130. He has made all things to show how glorious he is.

  131. And if even inanimate stars and galaxies and trees sing and oceans roar,

  132. all things were made to worship him,

  133. how much more should men and women and boys and girls

  134. who have the faculties to know him personally be worshipping him?

  135. In light of that, how awful is the current state

  136. of so many people's hearts and the state of the world?

  137. Even here in Newcastle, people were worshipping worthless idols.

  138. Setting themselves up as if they can determine life.

  139. That what I think equals reality is what our culture is saying here.

  140. People were just devoting themselves to worthless things.

  141. And then where you're going, people were bowing down towards a God

  142. that cannot hear them.

  143. A God that cannot speak to them.

  144. A God that cannot save them.

  145. The world is in an awful state.

  146. The world is worthy of every person and every nation's delight.

  147. And yet, so many are delighting in worthless things.

  148. And the Lord takes himself seriously.

  149. He's determined to have all creation respond in ecstatic rejoicing in him alone.

  150. He is so determined to bring this about

  151. that he's brought about a great salvation for all the world.

  152. For us who have plunged ourselves into impurity,

  153. he has made a way to wash us clean

  154. through the death of his son

  155. so that we can stand before the splendour of his holiness

  156. and not tremble in dread,

  157. but tremble in delight.

  158. He's made a way.

  159. And he's made a way

  160. for us to know real life

  161. in raising his son from the dead.

  162. He raises us also.

  163. He has conquered everything.

  164. He is the source of life.

  165. He is determined to rescue his people

  166. from every nook and cranny of this world

  167. so that the whole world might give him the praise

  168. he is worthy of.

  169. He wants people to delight in him,

  170. in what is true,

  171. what is good,

  172. what is beautiful.

  173. So why does mission exist?

  174. Well, I'm going to quote John Piper here

  175. and there's a little article

  176. on the second page of the bulletin

  177. which is well worth your time.

  178. Missions exist because worship doesn't.

  179. The Lord is worthy of every person

  180. and every nation's total delight

  181. and he's achieved everything to bring about that

  182. through his son's death and resurrection.

  183. Mission exists because worship doesn't.

  184. So Matt and Grace,

  185. your task is done,

  186. our task is done

  187. when that day arrives

  188. that's pictured in Revelation chapter 5.

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  189. The day is coming,

  190. it's already begun

  191. but it's going to be brought to completion

  192. when everyone is singing

  193. worthy are you

  194. for you were slain

  195. and by your blood

  196. you ransomed people for God

  197. from every tribe and language

  198. and people and nation.

  199. When the whole world

  200. is singing with the angels,

  201. worthy is the lamb

  202. who was slain

  203. to receive power

  204. and wealth

  205. and wisdom

  206. and might

  207. and honour

  208. and glory

  209. and blessing

  210. when everyone's saying

  211. life is in

  212. you

  213. Lord Jesus.

  214. When that day comes

  215. mission can stop.

  216. When the whole world

  217. with the ocean roaring

  218. and the trees singing

  219. and every human being

  220. singing the praise

  221. of the one

  222. who is worthy of all praise

  223. we won't need to be on mission

  224. and God is determined

  225. to bring that day about.

  226. He's done everything

  227. to secure it

  228. in the death and resurrection

  229. of his son.

  230. So the basis of mission

  231. is that God

  232. is worthy

  233. of

  234. every person

  235. and nation's delight.

  236. He's worthy

  237. of all worship.

  238. Christ is

  239. worthy

  240. to receive

  241. the reward

  242. of his suffering.

  243. He was determined

  244. to bring it about.

  245. So that's the basis.

  246. So how should we

  247. considering the next question

  248. how should we think

  249. of ourselves

  250. in this task

  251. of being sent

  252. into the world

  253. to represent God?

  254. How should we think

  255. of ourselves

  256. in this task

  257. of mission?

  258. I think Psalm 96

  259. is again

  260. a great picture

  261. for us

  262. in the first verses.

  263. Oh sing

  264. to the Lord

  265. a new song.

  266. Sing to the Lord

  267. all the earth.

  268. Sing to the Lord

  269. bless his name

  270. tell of his salvation

  271. from day to day

  272. declare his glory

  273. among the nations

  274. his marvellous works

  275. among all the peoples.

  276. This isn't a description

  277. of what we call

  278. missionaries.

  279. This is a description

  280. of what we call

  281. a Christian

  282. a believer.

  283. Missions

  284. isn't

  285. primarily

  286. a task

  287. that we have

  288. to accomplish.

  289. Singing

  290. his praises

  291. declaring

  292. his glory

  293. is

  294. just the natural

  295. overflow.

  296. It's the natural

  297. response

  298. to what we've received

  299. from God

  300. in Christ.

  301. It's not that

  302. I have

  303. this task

  304. called telling people

  305. the gospel

  306. and I need to find

  307. creative

  308. manipulative

  309. ways to

  310. help them

  311. buy into it.

  312. That's not what it is.

  313. It's

  314. I praise

  315. his glory

  316. and I want people

  317. to join that song.

  318. I think it helps

  319. to realise

  320. and C.S. Lewis

  321. helped me

  322. grasp this point

  323. that we all praise.

  324. We all praise

  325. what we love.

  326. We can't help it.

  327. Whether you think

  328. about what gets

  329. you excited

  330. what your mind

  331. just goes to

  332. and you love

  333. thinking and planning

  334. what

  335. gives you delight

  336. and what comes

  337. out of your mouth

  338. therefore you can't

  339. help but speak

  340. about it.

  341. people praise

  342. books and

  343. restaurants

  344. and their

  345. romantic loves

  346. and they praise

  347. like Messias

  348. talking about.

  349. We can't help it.

  350. Everyone is praising

  351. praising, praising.

  352. The only question is

  353. is it worthy

  354. of our praise

  355. and

  356. so a Christian

  357. is someone

  358. whose heart

  359. has just been

  360. captured by the

  361. love of God

  362. and so they

  363. naturally just

  364. sing.

  365. It just comes

  366. out of them

  367. and not just

  368. sing with our

  369. words but you

  370. can just see it

  371. in our choices

  372. in our life.

  373. So Matt and

  374. Grace, this new

  375. identity that you're

  376. taking on

  377. called missionary,

  378. I'm going to

  379. suggest to you

  380. that that's not

  381. fundamentally who

  382. you are,

  383. missionary,

  384. because the

  385. Lord might

  386. decide you're

  387. only going to

  388. be overseas

  389. for a couple

  390. of weeks.

  391. We don't

  392. know or it

  393. could be the

  394. rest of your

  395. lives but it's

  396. not fundamentally

  397. who you are.

  398. He wants you to

  399. sing his praises

  400. wherever you are.

  401. You have already

  402. been singing his

  403. praises since the

  404. time that Christ

  405. has captured your

  406. hearts.

  407. So I think just

  408. get that clear in

  409. your minds that

  410. you already are

  411. singing his

  412. praises and you

  413. always will be for

  414. eternity.

  415. The title

  416. missionary will

  417. come and go but

  418. that's not

  419. fundamentally who

  420. you are.

  421. And I think

  422. the other thing

  423. we should be

  424. thinking for

  425. ourselves is the

  426. desire for others

  427. to delight in the

  428. Lord only comes

  429. when we

  430. ourselves are

  431. delighting in

  432. the Lord.

  433. The fuel of

  434. mission is your

  435. own delight in

  436. the Lord.

  437. As Piper puts

  438. it, you can't

  439. commend what you

  440. don't cherish.

  441. So Matt and

  442. Grace again,

  443. you've got lots

  444. of tasks ahead

  445. of you that are

  446. on your mind

  447. like learning

  448. language and

  449. finding a place

  450. to live and so

  451. many other things

  452. that are going

  453. on, how to

  454. raise Rachel in

  455. a different

  456. culture with

  457. different temptations

  458. and different

  459. challenges.

  460. But can I just

  461. urge you to put

  462. one task before

  463. you always because

  464. this one task

  465. will empower and

  466. guide every other

  467. thing you need to

  468. do.

  469. and that is to

  470. know the Lord

  471. more and more

  472. and more because

  473. the more you

  474. delight in him,

  475. the more your

  476. life will

  477. demonstrate that

  478. he is worthy

  479. of everything.

  480. So know him

  481. more and more

  482. in good times

  483. and in bad.

  484. God.

  485. And I think it's

  486. when you know

  487. him more and

  488. more, that's

  489. when your

  490. compassion for

  491. the people you're

  492. going to will

  493. actually be

  494. sustained.

  495. I might say an

  496. outrageous thing

  497. here.

  498. I don't think we

  499. in and of

  500. ourselves have the

  501. compassion to

  502. want people to be

  503. saved.

  504. It's only when we

  505. come to the God

  506. who has that

  507. compassion for

  508. people, that's

  509. when we're filled

  510. with him to want

  511. people to know

  512. him.

  513. So keep knowing

  514. him more and

  515. more.

  516. Delight in him

  517. and that will

  518. sustain you through

  519. whatever hardships

  520. you face and it

  521. will maintain your

  522. compassion.

  523. compassion.

  524. The last thing I'll

  525. say is because you

  526. are called to sing

  527. and declare his

  528. praises, I think

  529. that also transforms

  530. how you measure

  531. success.

  532. You can't guarantee

  533. any results.

  534. I think we often

  535. think that God wants

  536. results like the

  537. world measures

  538. results in numbers

  539. and money and power

  540. and influence and

  541. things like that.

  542. He made the

  543. heavens.

  544. He doesn't need

  545. all that.

  546. He owns all

  547. that.

  548. So he doesn't

  549. need those results.

  550. Results is

  551. completely up to

  552. him.

  553. You can't

  554. guarantee any of

  555. that.

  556. So what does

  557. success look like

  558. then if it's not

  559. tangible results

  560. necessarily?

  561. Well, it looks

  562. like, let me

  563. reframe the

  564. question, how

  565. you glorify God,

  566. is it by results?

  567. No, I think you

  568. will glorify God

  569. when your life is

  570. showing that his

  571. love is better

  572. than life.

  573. You will glorify

  574. him when you can

  575. show others that he

  576. is your delight.

  577. And that means

  578. that even when

  579. things go really

  580. bad, even in the

  581. hardship and losses

  582. and whatever

  583. rejection you

  584. receive, even

  585. when you're facing

  586. your own death and

  587. losing everything,

  588. if your heart can

  589. still say, your

  590. love is better

  591. than life, that's

  592. success.

  593. You're bringing

  594. glory to him.

  595. So the grace of

  596. God has taken

  597. us out of the

  598. world and brought

  599. us into a new

  600. humanity in Christ

  601. and we've been sent

  602. back into the world

  603. to be embodied

  604. witnesses to the

  605. heavenly life that

  606. we've found in

  607. belonging to Jesus.

  608. So the last thing I

  609. want to say, Matt

  610. and Grace, is can

  611. you pray for us as

  612. a church family?

  613. It's not so much

  614. that we need to be

  615. committed to

  616. supporting you, it's

  617. more, pray that we

  618. would know the

  619. Lord more and

  620. more and more so

  621. that we as a

  622. church will delight

  623. in him and just

  624. naturally overflow in

  625. his praise and want

  626. him to be honoured in

  627. all the world because

  628. that's when we will

  629. be of good use and

  630. good partnership to

  631. you.

  632. Why don't I pray

  633. and then we're going

  634. to sing.

  635. And have a Bible

  636. reading and then

  637. David will continue.

  638. Father, we don't

  639. desire your glory

  640. anywhere near as

  641. much as we should.

  642. So I pray that you

  643. would fill us with

  644. yourself.

  645. I pray as a church

  646. family and for Matt

  647. and Grace that you

  648. would reveal yourself

  649. more and more through

  650. your son so that we

  651. might cherish you

  652. with all our heart

  653. and therefore want

  654. you to be honoured

  655. as you so rightly

  656. deserve in all the

  657. world.

  658. So fill us with

  659. yourself, I pray.

  660. Amen.

  661. Thank you.
