  1. Revelation 21 to 22 verse 5.

  2. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.

  3. And I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

  4. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man.

  5. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people.

  6. And God himself will be with them as their God.

  7. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more.

  8. Neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away.

  9. And he who was seated on the throne said, Behold, I am making all things new.

  10. Also he said, Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.

  11. And he said to me, It is done.

  12. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.

  13. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.

  14. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God, and he will be my son.

  15. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral,

  16. sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars,

  17. their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.

  18. Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues,

  19. and spoke to me, saying, Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.

  20. And he carried me away in the spirit to a great high mountain,

  21. and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God,

  22. having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper clear as crystal.

  23. It had a great high wall with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels,

  24. and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed.

  25. On the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates.

  26. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

  27. And the one who spoke with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city and its gates and walls.

  28. The city lies four square, its length the same as its width.

  29. And he measured the city with his rod, twelve hundred stadia.

  30. Its length and width and height are equal.

  31. He also measured its wall, 144 cubits, by human measurement, which is also an angel's measurement.

  32. The wall was built of jasper, while the city was pure gold like clear glass.

  33. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel.

  34. The first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, the fifth onyx,

  35. the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase,

  36. the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst.

  37. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl.

  38. And the street of the city was pure gold like transparent glass.

  39. And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God, the Almighty and the Lamb.

  40. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives its light,

  41. and its lamp is the Lamb.

  42. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it.

  43. And its gates will never be shut by day, and there will be no night there.

  44. They will bring into it the glory and the honour of the nations.

  45. But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false,

  46. but only those who are written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

  47. Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal,

  48. flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city.

  49. Also on either side of the river, the tree of life, with its twelve kind of fruit,

  50. yielding its fruit each month.

  51. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

  52. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it,

  53. and his servants will worship him.

  54. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.

  55. And night will be no more.

  56. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light,

  57. and they will reign forever and ever.

  58. Well, how have you experienced your world, our world, this week?

  59. I guess I already know the answer to that question for every one of us,

  60. and that is, we'd have to say it's a mix.

  61. It's always a mix, isn't it?

  62. So, on the one hand, you're aware of stunning beauty in the physical world,

  63. yet incredible harshness and uncertainty,

  64. climate change, devastating natural disasters, disease, plagues.

  65. It's such a mix.

  66. It's like the same in our relational world.

  67. From time to time, we catch glimpses of the loving, secure, satisfying, selfless relationships

  68. that each one of us crave.

  69. But mostly, we're just struggling to keep our relationships together.

  70. We're struggling just through dysfunction and brokenness.

  71. Our brokenness and dysfunction impacting others,

  72. and the brokenness and dysfunction of others impacting on us.

  73. And I think it would be safe to say, without being called Eeyore this morning,

  74. that I think most of us at the end of the week just feel a bit battered,

  75. and bruised, and tired.

  76. That's life, isn't it?

  77. And then when we switch on our TVs,

  78. if you still use a TV, or your iPad, whatever it is,

  79. you get your news service on,

  80. at global village level,

  81. well, the picture's just the same, only much bigger,

  82. much more severe.

  83. Brutal conflict erupting every which way.

  84. Hatred in countless forms.

  85. Lies.

  86. Ruthless exploitation.

  87. We talk about man's inhumanity to man,

  88. but that's just a cliche, isn't it, for what we see.

  89. That reality, I think,

  90. is very, very much to the fore in explaining why,

  91. hope is basic to every person.

  92. It's hope in the middle of a very, very heavy,

  93. dysfunctional, broken world.

  94. It's hope

  95. that keeps a person from being stuck

  96. in the awfulness of the past,

  97. or the present.

  98. Because hope gives promise of a better future.

  99. Hope is such a powerful thing in each of us.

  100. Hope is a really powerful thing in society.

  101. In fact, it's so powerful

  102. that I think it's not too much to say

  103. that hope is the last thing we lose in life.

  104. Once that's gone,

  105. then it's gone.

  106. Life's gone.

  107. We cannot continue to live meaningfully

  108. without hope.

  109. It's that powerful.

  110. It's that important.

  111. Now, of course,

  112. when we look at our world,

  113. then we see

  114. that the more hopeless people feel,

  115. the more they experience that sense of brokenness

  116. and dysfunction in the world,

  117. as they observe it and experience it,

  118. the more they demand hope.

  119. And what we see in our world, I believe,

  120. is that we keep recycling

  121. the same old hopeless forms of hope.

  122. Despair.

  123. Black depression.

  124. And that's an epidemic proportion

  125. in our society at the moment.

  126. Or, go to the other extreme,

  127. there's escapism,

  128. self-indulgence.

  129. We entertain ourselves to death

  130. at the old retail therapy,

  131. binging Netflix,

  132. endless entertainments,

  133. home renovations,

  134. personal pampering,

  135. and so the list could go on and on and on.

  136. It's all about escapism.

  137. It's all about self-indulgence.

  138. It's all about creating

  139. a sense of paradise and security

  140. and meaningfulness

  141. in among the dysfunction and the brokenness.

  142. And then there's bland optimism.

  143. Our world seems to be

  144. still holding on to that.

  145. Positive thinking.

  146. Hard to know how

  147. after generations of war

  148. and destruction.

  149. But it seems like

  150. a lot of people still,

  151. contrary to all evidence,

  152. believe that inherently

  153. people are good.

  154. And that if we can just deliver

  155. the right educational,

  156. economic, and social conditions,

  157. then we can actually build

  158. that earthly paradise

  159. we all crave.

  160. And that if we can just deliver

  161. and that's more positive

  162. in positive thinking

  163. than I can manage,

  164. let me tell you.

  165. In sharp contrast to that,

  166. there is Christian hope.

  167. That is,

  168. Christian hope is the past,

  169. present, and future

  170. connected in Jesus.

  171. So the Christian hope,

  172. as I introduce that term,

  173. is just another way of speaking

  174. about the Christian worldview,

  175. which is spelled out

  176. in the Bible.

  177. And the worldview,

  178. I've used this idea before,

  179. the worldview is just like

  180. a pair of glasses.

  181. A worldview is the lens

  182. by which we observe

  183. and understand our world,

  184. what our world is,

  185. where our world came from,

  186. and our place in the world.

  187. The biblical worldview

  188. gives us a framework

  189. to understand

  190. the frustration

  191. and brokenness

  192. we observe

  193. in ourselves

  194. and in our world.

  195. The biblical worldview

  196. gives us a framework

  197. to understand

  198. the sense of futility

  199. and meaninglessness

  200. which threatens

  201. to overwhelm us

  202. from time to time.

  203. The Christian worldview

  204. is a compelling

  205. historical explanation

  206. which guarantees

  207. we're not stuck

  208. in the past

  209. or the present

  210. because it explains

  211. precisely how

  212. and why

  213. the future

  214. will be better.

  215. In the Christian worldview,

  216. history is linear,

  217. not circular,

  218. as in many

  219. Eastern religions

  220. and philosophies.

  221. that is,

  222. in the Christian worldview,

  223. history,

  224. or what we know

  225. as space and time,

  226. actually had

  227. a precise start.

  228. It was created

  229. out of nothing

  230. by God

  231. when he created

  232. our universe.

  233. And history,

  234. space and time,

  235. will have

  236. a precise,

  237. finite ending

  238. at some point

  239. in the future.

  240. Also determined

  241. by God.

  242. and in between

  243. those two points,

  244. history is us

  245. moving inexorably

  246. towards that

  247. final point

  248. in time.

  249. And the Christian worldview,

  250. most importantly,

  251. explains to us

  252. that we experience

  253. the world

  254. not as it was

  255. created to be,

  256. but we experience

  257. the world

  258. having been subjected

  259. to frustration

  260. and futility.

  261. And that fits,

  262. doesn't it?

  263. That fits with our sense

  264. of what we're observing

  265. in ourselves

  266. and experiencing

  267. in our world.

  268. We just think

  269. to ourselves,

  270. there's got to be

  271. something better.

  272. This can't be

  273. what we were made for.

  274. We see that most clearly

  275. at death.

  276. We just want to cry,

  277. no,

  278. no,

  279. no,

  280. this is not right.

  281. We were made

  282. for better things.

  283. But equally true,

  284. the Christian worldview

  285. explains that God's future

  286. is already breaking

  287. into the present.

  288. Both God's image bearers

  289. and God's physical world

  290. will be restored

  291. to God's original design

  292. and plan.

  293. Because it is

  294. God's design

  295. and plan.

  296. And Jesus,

  297. we're told

  298. in the biblical worldview,

  299. is the center

  300. of history

  301. and the Bible.

  302. Every aspect

  303. of the past,

  304. present,

  305. and future

  306. is tied

  307. inseparably

  308. to Jesus

  309. and God's kingdom.

  310. And

  311. so as Christians,

  312. as believers,

  313. those in Christ,

  314. we have the link,

  315. the vital piece

  316. that puts it all together.

  317. That is the Christian hope.

  318. And Jesus himself

  319. was very much aware of this.

  320. His mission in the world,

  321. he says in Mark 1,

    Mark 1:15

  322. verse 15,

  323. you can check that out

  324. for yourself at a later time,

  325. his mission in the world

  326. was to establish

  327. the kingdom of God.

  328. That is,

  329. in the context,

  330. he's saying,

  331. as God's Messiah,

  332. as God's promised

  333. king and savior,

  334. I will do

  335. everything necessary

  336. to restore

  337. the kingdom of God.

  338. What's the kingdom of God?

  339. Well, the kingdom of God,

  340. we've seen over the last few weeks

  341. from Genesis 1 to 3,

  342. is

  343. God's people,

  344. God's special people,

  345. in God's place,

  346. under God's rule

  347. and blessing.

  348. God's

  349. under God's rule

  350. and blessing.

  351. In John 5,

    John 5:39

  352. verse 39,

  353. again,

  354. you can check it out later,

  355. Jesus is clear

  356. that all scripture,

  357. that which we call

  358. the Old Testament,

  359. all scripture

  360. is written about him.

  361. And in that context,

  362. he actually connects that

  363. to eternal life.

  364. So if you want to know

  365. how to find eternal life,

  366. what eternal life is,

  367. then you read

  368. the Old Testament scripture

  369. in the light of Jesus.

  370. He brings it to fulfillment.

  371. He makes it real.

  372. He delivers

  373. all those Old Testament promises.

  374. The same in Luke chapter 27,

  375. verses 44 to 46,

  376. after his resurrection,

  377. and he was walking

  378. on the Emmaus Road

  379. with his disciples.

  380. And he reveals himself

  381. and then tells them

  382. that, again,

  383. the same thing,

  384. everything written about him

  385. in the scriptures,

  386. the Old Testament,

  387. as we call it,

  388. was about him.

  389. Again,

  390. he is the one

  391. who fulfills

  392. every promise

  393. made by God

  394. as part of God's

  395. salvation plan.

  396. So friends,

  397. Jesus literally

  398. is the key

  399. to understanding

  400. the whole Bible.

  401. We can only

  402. understand properly

  403. what we read

  404. in the Old Testament

  405. when we understand

  406. it through Jesus.

  407. So for example,

  408. if we just took

  409. the idea of sin

  410. we saw last week

  411. in Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  412. we can see it's awful,

  413. but it's not

  414. until we see

  415. what Jesus has to pay

  416. to undo the effect

  417. of sin

  418. that we understand

  419. how awful it is.

  420. Nothing less

  421. than the life

  422. of God's own son

  423. was going to be

  424. sufficient to deal

  425. with it.

  426. And so,

  427. things that we see

  428. in the early part

  429. of scriptures,

  430. we actually see

  431. develop throughout

  432. scripture,

  433. and then finally

  434. the last piece

  435. fits in place

  436. and we think,

  437. wow,

  438. so that's

  439. what it was

  440. all leading to.

  441. Jesus is doing

  442. this.

  443. Now it all

  444. makes sense.

  445. Every aspect

  446. of Jesus'

  447. ministry

  448. is shaped

  449. and defined

  450. by the problems

  451. and issues

  452. of the past

  453. as he

  454. brings God's

  455. future

  456. into

  457. time and space.

  458. Jesus.

  459. So,

  460. in the remainder

  461. of my time,

  462. I just want

  463. to have a quick

  464. walk through

  465. the Bible's

  466. plot line

  467. of God's

  468. salvation plan

  469. in Jesus.

  470. And it's going

  471. to be very quick.

  472. It's actually

  473. going to be

  474. more like a gallop.

  475. So,

  476. over the past

  477. three weeks,

  478. we've explored

  479. Genesis 1-3

  480. and we've

  481. explored that

  482. under the headings

  483. of explanation

  484. for why we

  485. observe and

  486. experience the

  487. world as we

  488. do.

  489. And we

  490. started in

  491. Genesis 1

  492. with a notion

  493. that God

  494. created.

  495. And we saw

  496. there the

  497. world as it

  498. was designed

  499. to be.

  500. And we

  501. just made

  502. some notes

  503. in passing.

  504. The universe

  505. is God's

  506. created place.

  507. The universe

  508. is a home

  509. for God's

  510. glory.

  511. Demonstrating

  512. his creative

  513. power and

  514. goodness.

  515. And it's

  516. in Genesis

  517. 1 and 2

  518. and 3

  519. that we

  520. see the

  521. pattern of

  522. God's

  523. kingdom.

  524. So,

  525. Adam and

  526. Eve were

  527. God's

  528. special people

  529. in God's

  530. special place,

  531. the garden.

  532. Created as

  533. image bearers

  534. to reflect

  535. God's glory,

  536. they were

  537. the first

  538. of the

  539. human race,

  540. set apart

  541. from all

  542. other living

  543. creatures

  544. to enjoy

  545. unique

  546. personal

  547. relationship

  548. with God

  549. and rule

  550. God's

  551. world on

  552. God's

  553. behalf.

  554. And they

  555. were gladly

  556. under God's

  557. rule as

  558. Genesis 2,

  559. as they

  560. lived all

  561. of life

  562. in obedience

  563. to God's

  564. word and

  565. as they

  566. lived all

  567. of life

  568. as worship

  569. of God.

  570. And in

  571. turn,

  572. enjoying the

  573. good life

  574. of blessing,

  575. abundance,

  576. and rest,

  577. as it's called

  578. in Genesis 2,

  579. or security.

  580. God was

  581. created,

  582. then the

  583. next step

  584. is that

  585. God has

  586. rejected

  587. chapter 3.

  588. And the

  589. world is

  590. subjected to

  591. frustration and

  592. futility.

  593. So,

  594. there you

  595. have God's

  596. people in

  597. God's place

  598. under God's

  599. rule.

  600. Well,

  601. chapter 3,

  602. God's

  603. special people

  604. choose to

  605. disobey God

  606. and act

  607. independently

  608. of him.

  609. And the

  610. consequences

  611. were disastrous

  612. both for

  613. them,

  614. Adam and

  615. Eve,

  616. and for

  617. every generation

  618. that has

  619. followed them

  620. since.

  621. No longer

  622. God's special

  623. people in

  624. God's special

  625. place because

  626. they've been

  627. banished.

  628. They were

  629. shut out of

  630. God's garden.

  631. They turned

  632. away from

  633. God.

  634. God turned

  635. away from

  636. them.

  637. And they

  638. were forced

  639. into that

  640. very thing

  641. which they

  642. wanted in

  643. their action.

  644. That is,

  645. they wanted

  646. to live

  647. independently

  648. of God.

  649. That was

  650. why they

  651. chose what

  652. they did.

  653. And guess

  654. what?

  655. They got it

  656. as God

  657. closed them

  658. out of the

  659. garden and

  660. locked them

  661. out.

  662. They were

  663. forced to

  664. experience life

  665. independently of

  666. God.

  667. And we see

  668. in Genesis

  669. 4 to 11

  670. that that

  671. life was

  672. just horrendous

  673. as the

  674. depth and

  675. nature of

  676. sin spread

  677. from the

  678. generation to

  679. the generation.

  680. No longer

  681. God's special

  682. people.

  683. No longer

  684. in God's

  685. special place.

  686. No longer

  687. under God's

  688. rule and

  689. enjoying God's

  690. blessing.

  691. Now,

  692. they were

  693. experiencing

  694. God's wrath,

  695. God's judgment,

  696. albeit partial.

  697. But they were

  698. seeing an

  699. aspect of

  700. God's

  701. character they'd

  702. never come

  703. across before

  704. until they

  705. disobeyed.

  706. And their

  707. life was

  708. subjected to

  709. restlessness in

  710. comparison to

  711. rest,

  712. frustration in

  713. comparison to

  714. delight and

  715. ease,

  716. toil,

  717. futility,

  718. rebellion,

  719. and most of

  720. all and most

  721. destructive of

  722. all,

  723. self-worship.

  724. They stopped

  725. worshipping God.

  726. Who did they

  727. start to

  728. worship?

  729. Themselves.

  730. They had

  731. put themselves

  732. as creators.

  733. They had

  734. inverted God's

  735. order.

  736. God created,

  737. God rejected,

  738. and then God

  739. mirac...

  740. Oh, no,

  741. I've lost my

  742. word.

  743. God provides.

  744. Sorry.

  745. I'm sorry about

  746. that.

  747. God provides

  748. for his

  749. rebellious

  750. people.

  751. I don't

  752. know what

  753. happened there.

  754. God created,

  755. God rejected,

  756. and God

  757. provides for

  758. his rebellious

  759. people.

  760. The situation

  761. at the end of

  762. chapter 3,

  763. on one reading,

  764. just looks

  765. hopeless.

  766. But in

  767. amongst all

  768. the hopelessness,

  769. we see that

  770. God is

  771. determined to

  772. restore his

  773. kingdom.

  774. God is

  775. determined once

  776. again to

  777. have his

  778. special people

  779. in his

  780. special place,

  781. gladly under

  782. his robe,

  783. and enjoying

  784. the blessing

  785. that comes

  786. with that.

  787. And so God

  788. commits to

  789. acting towards

  790. his rebellious

  791. people in

  792. love and

  793. undeserving

  794. generosity.

  795. And the

  796. first promise

  797. of that is

  798. tied to

  799. someone in

  800. Genesis 2,

  801. 15.

  802. Dave looked

  803. at this last

  804. week.

  805. Again, go back

  806. and check out

  807. the verse.

  808. I'm going to

  809. call that person

  810. the bruiser.

  811. Because the

  812. prophecy was

  813. that this

  814. descendant of

  815. Eve would

  816. come and

  817. bruise Satan's

  818. head.

  819. But in that

  820. action,

  821. would himself

  822. be bruised.

  823. The bruiser.

  824. What was his,

  825. what was the

  826. promise of the

  827. bruiser from

  828. the God?

  829. Well, the

  830. bruiser, at

  831. considerable cost

  832. to himself,

  833. would defeat

  834. Satan and

  835. undo the

  836. effects of

  837. sin and

  838. rebellion and

  839. therefore restore

  840. God's people to

  841. God's place under

  842. God's rule and

  843. blessing once

  844. again.

  845. So that once

  846. again, God's

  847. world would do

  848. what God designed

  849. his world to do,

  850. and that is

  851. perfectly reflect

  852. his glory.

  853. perfectly demonstrate

  854. his power,

  855. his aloneness in

  856. terms of his

  857. being and his

  858. presence in the

  859. universe.

  860. Now, as I said

  861. before, Genesis

  862. 4 to 11 records the

  863. horrendous consequences

  864. as sins spread from

  865. one generation to the

  866. next, and they are

  867. horrendous.

  868. Look through those

  869. chapters.

  870. It just beggars

  871. belief.

  872. It's a

  873. but then hope

  874. surfaces again as

  875. God promises Abraham,

  876. Genesis 12 we're up

  877. to now, he says one

  878. of your descendants

  879. will, essentially he

  880. doesn't use this

  881. language, but one of

  882. your descendants will

  883. be the bruiser.

  884. That is, the promise

  885. to Abraham was in

  886. turn of land, nation

  887. and blessing.

  888. God's people in

  889. God's place in

  890. God's rule.

  891. And so if you're

  892. looking at the

  893. second page in the

  894. bullet and you can

  895. see this little

  896. schematic thing, the

  897. diagram thing, we

  898. see that Genesis 1

  899. to 11, the whole of

  900. the world is on

  901. focus, it's on view,

  902. and then in Genesis

  903. 12 with the promise

  904. to Abraham, we sort

  905. of narrow down and

  906. for the next

  907. generations we have

  908. the history of God's

  909. salvation plan as

  910. it's worked out

  911. through national

  912. Israel, the Jews.

  913. And then when we get

  914. to Jesus, then we

  915. open up and the

  916. whole world's back on

  917. view again.

  918. And finally we get to

  919. the end.

  920. And so it's

  921. symmetrical.

  922. But the rest of the

  923. Old Testament is

  924. basically God working

  925. out his plan of

  926. salvation that once

  927. again he would have

  928. his special people in

  929. his special place

  930. under his rule and

  931. enjoying his

  932. unrestricted blessing.

  933. Now, how do we see

  934. that?

  935. Well, if I had another

  936. three or four hours I

  937. would take you through

  938. all the different

  939. genres of literature in

  940. the Old Testament, but

  941. I'm not going to do

  942. that this morning.

  943. I just want to, at

  944. risk of being

  945. simplistic, and this

  946. probably will annoy

  947. some of you, just

  948. talk about this

  949. massive period in a

  950. couple of sentences,

  951. a few sentences, and

  952. say it, cast it like

  953. this.

  954. So the pattern from

  955. Genesis 12 until we

  956. get to Jesus is a

  957. pattern of waiting for

  958. the bruiser to come.

  959. And so what happens

  960. is this.

  961. As we track through

  962. and we get introduced

  963. to the next big

  964. character in God's

  965. salvation history,

  966. then the anticipation

  967. soars.

  968. Abraham, Isaac,

  969. Jacob, each time the

  970. anticipation soars.

  971. Perhaps this one is the

  972. bruiser.

  973. Perhaps he'll do what

  974. nobody else has been

  975. able to do before him,

  976. undo the effects of sin

  977. and restore the

  978. Garden of Eden

  979. conditions, bring

  980. God's people back

  981. into God's place and

  982. under God's rule.

  983. And the expectation

  984. soars and then

  985. crashes.

  986. Because we see that

  987. successively, each of

  988. these big figures,

  989. although they do

  990. great work for the

  991. Lord in that sense,

  992. each of them is still

  993. part of the problem.

  994. Sin.

  995. And sin trips them

  996. up and we crash

  997. and burn again.

  998. And we wait again

  999. in history for God

  1000. to bring the next

  1001. one.

  1002. Expectation soars

  1003. and we crash and

  1004. burn.

  1005. And so the pattern

  1006. continues right

  1007. through until Jesus.

  1008. Finally, we get to

  1009. Jesus.

  1010. And once again, hope

  1011. surges.

1012. Now, if you read in

  1013. the early chapters of

  1014. Luke's gospel, you'll

  1015. find people like

  1016. Zechariah and

  1017. Elizabeth, Anna the

  1018. prophetess and others

  1019. who are described as

  1020. people who are

  1021. faithfully waiting for

  1022. the consolation of

  1023. Israel.

  1024. That is, they were

  1025. people who were

  1026. living in hope, hope

  1027. of the bruiser

  1028. finally coming, hope

  1029. that God would

  1030. finally send his

  1031. Messiah, the one who

  1032. would undo the effects

  1033. of sin and restore

  1034. the world to what

1035. it was meant to be.

  1036. They too were feeling

  1037. bruised and battered

  1038. and tired.

  1039. And they couldn't

1040. wait for God to act

  1041. and send the bruiser.

  1042. Expectations were

  1043. soaring again.

  1044. Anticipation was

  1045. soaring.

  1046. Only this time, we

  1047. stay up there.

  1048. There's no

  1049. disappointment.

  1050. No crash and burn.

  1051. Jesus was the bruiser.

  1052. Finally arrived.

1053. And he got busy doing

  1054. what was promised in

  1055. Genesis 2.15.

1056. But he did it in the

  1057. most surprising of

  1058. ways.

  1059. The redemption of

  1060. God's people, that is

  1061. the restoration, the

  1062. undoing of the effects

  1063. of sin and bringing

  1064. God's people back into

  1065. perfect relationship with

  1066. God, that's what

  1067. redemption is.

  1068. The redemption of God's

1069. people came as he was

  1070. bruised on the cross

  1071. and in death.

1072. But his death did undo

  1073. the effects of sin.

  1074. His death did restore

  1075. God's people to God's

  1076. special place, that is,

  1077. in Jesus.

  1078. Relationship, personal,

  1079. intimate relationship with

  1080. Jesus.

1081. It renewed them from the

1082. inside out so that once

  1083. again they're delighted to

1084. live all of life under

1085. God's rule, to live all of

1086. life as worship and to

1087. enjoy all the blessings of

1088. being in God's family, in

1089. God's place, in the Lord

1090. Jesus, as they were created

  1091. to do.

1092. But not even Jesus brings the

1093. story to the end, in that

  1094. sense.

1095. Salvation or redemption as we

1096. experience it is very much

  1097. real.

1098. We already have God's future

  1099. reaching into the present

  1100. now.

  1101. We are in Christ.

1102. We are holy in Christ.

1103. We are in relationship with

  1104. Christ.

1105. We are already being made

  1106. perfect, made suitable for

  1107. heaven.

1108. But it's not yet complete,

1109. we're told, in the New

  1110. Testament.

1111. We are a new creation in

  1112. Christ, 2 Corinthians 5, 17.

  1113. Ephesians 1, 1 to 14.

  1114. We have every possible

  1115. blessing in Christ.

  1116. Our inheritance is real.

1117. But it's not yet fully

  1118. experienced or appreciated or

1119. enjoyed, is what we're told in

  1120. Ephesians 1, 12 to 14.

1121. So in spite of the fact that we

  1122. already experienced so much

  1123. renewal, restoration and

1124. blessing in Christ, in spite of

1125. the fact, therefore, that God's

1126. future has already come into us

1127. in the present, then I can tell

1128. you this morning, my friends, and

  1129. I'm excited about this if you're

1130. not, the best is yet to come.

1131. The best is yet to come.

1132. And to think of the best being

1133. yet to come takes us to the end

1134. of history and the new heavens

  1135. and the new earth.

1136. And those, whatever else they are,

1137. are just pictures of renewal and

  1138. complete restoration.

1139. For all the points we might trip

1140. over some of the details of the

1141. pictures, just come with me at that

  1142. point.

  1143. It's just a picture of complete

1144. restoration where once again we see

1145. what it will be like to be God's

1146. special people in God's special

1147. place under God's rule and enjoying

1148. his blessing in a way that's no

1149. longer restricted and inhibited by our

1150. finiteness and by our remaining sin.

  1151. And it's a picture that's tantalizing,

  1152. to say the least.

1153. So turn with me now to Revelation 21

  1154. and 22.

1155. These are pictures and they are

1156. profound pictures and yet clear

1157. pictures and I say to you, let's not

  1158. make them too complicated.

1159. I think they're just meant to be

  1160. simple pictures.

1161. And notice we do that, that we

1162. started the Bible, this series in

  1163. Genesis 1, with God's word.

1164. The first page of the Bible is God's

  1165. word and creation.

1166. The last page of the Bible is God's

  1167. word and new creation.

1168. And in between that is Jesus.

1169. God's word and Jesus working out God's

  1170. salvation plan.

  1171. Now that's a worldview, my friends,

1172. that is so, so good to have when we're

1173. feeling battered and bruised and weary.

1174. Mark Twain said history never repeats

1175. itself, but it does rhyme.

1176. He was even more Eorish than me because

1177. what he was really saying.

1178. That was meant to be rhetorical, Liz.

1179. What he's saying is that, look, nothing

  1180. ever changes in history.

1181. It just goes round and round and

  1182. round.

  1183. That's a dreadful place to be.

1184. In Revelation chapter 20, very difficult,

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  1185. complicated things.

1186. Christians have argued over this for years

1187. and will continue to argue that in the

  1188. generations.

1189. But let me just touch you down very briefly

  1190. in Genesis 20, verses 11 through to 15.

    Genesis 20:11

1191. Essentially this, that Genesis 20, 11 through to 15,

1192. and you can read this for yourself, is God's

  1193. final action in history.

1194. That is the final judgment.

1195. And again, that parallels Genesis 3.

1196. God brought a first judgment, but it was only

  1197. partial.

1198. There was always going to be an expectation of

1199. a second, final judgment if God's justice was to

1200. be displayed in God's glory.

1201. Well, that second, final judgment that brings

1202. history to an end is talked about in Revelation

  1203. 20, 11 through to 15.

  1204. But what then?

1205. That was an event that had no fear for Christ's

1206. people because their names are written in the

1207. Lamb's book of life, as John talked about.

1208. It was a momentous occasion.

1209. It will be a momentous occasion, sorry.

1210. But it has no fear for God's people.

  1211. But what then?

1212. Well, remember the structure of Genesis 1?

1213. Six days of action by the Lord on the seventh day.

  1214. It didn't end.

1215. Revelation is structured in the same way.

  1216. I don't think, coincidentally, I think it's

  1217. deliberately by John.

1218. He works through six scenes or six cycles of

  1219. history.

  1220. Each has a start.

  1221. Each has a finish.

  1222. It's a perspective of God's world over the

  1223. ages.

1224. But then this last scene doesn't end.

  1225. It continues.

1226. Theoretically, it should end at the end of

1227. chapter 20 because that's the end of history.

  1228. But no, it continues.

1229. What's left after God's final action of history?

  1230. God's people in God's place under God's rule.

  1231. It's a picture of heaven.

  1232. It's a picture of heaven.

1233. And what a picture it is.

1234. All the things lost and spoiled by sin and rebellion

1235. now restored and perfected by Jesus

1236. so that they can never be lost again.

1237. So the Bible starts with the Garden of Eden.

1238. And it ends with a picture of the Garden of Eden.

1239. But far better than the first Garden of Eden.

1240. We'll get to that in a minute.

  1241. Far more secure.

1242. Finally, the picture, as we move into these pictures,

1243. finally as Christ's people will experience in full what we

  1244. long for daily.

  1245. Revelation 21, verses 1 to 8.

    Revelation 21:1–8

1246. I saw a new heaven and a new earth.

1247. For the first heaven and earth had passed away.

  1248. And the sea.

1249. By the way, here the sea represents a chaos

1250. and disorder in the world.

1251. But there won't be any of that in heaven.

1252. So the sea doesn't exist.

  1253. It's picture language.

  1254. Remember that?

  1255. Remember that?

1256. And I saw the holy city.

1257. New Jerusalem coming down out of heaven for God.

  1258. Prepared as a bride.

  1259. Adorned for her husband.

1260. The new city is actually a community.

  1261. People.

  1262. The church.

1263. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,

1264. Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man.

1265. He will dwell with them.

1266. And they will be his people.

1267. And God himself will be with them as their God.

  1268. God's people.

1269. Names in the Lamb's Book of Life.

  1270. Redeemed people.

  1271. In God's place.

  1272. Right there with God.

1273. As he walked with Adam in the garden.

1274. We're back to that picture again.

  1275. Under God's rule.

  1276. The good life.

  1277. The eternal life.

  1278. The abundant life.

  1279. The abundant life.

1280. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

1281. And death shall be no more.

1282. Neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore.

1283. For the former things have passed away.

1284. Friends, don't we just long to be free from the awfulness of life?

1285. The older I get, the more I long for it.

1286. Don't we just long for a new home.

  1287. A place of security.

  1288. A place that's deeply satisfying.

  1289. A place that's restful.

  1290. A place that sin.

1291. And I speak about my own sin or the sin of others.

  1292. That can't intrude.

  1293. It can't spoil.

1294. Nor do we need to be anxious about it.

  1295. Intruding or spoiling.

1296. That's the picture of heaven.

  1297. Heaven will be perfect.

1298. There will be none in heaven, verse 8, who seek to live independently of God.

1299. And heaven is God's place of security and beauty.

1300. And blessing for God's people.

1301. In verses 9 through to 27, there's a series of four, again, pictures.

1302. John is showcasing God's people.

  1303. Christ's bride.

  1304. The holy city.

  1305. The new Jerusalem.

1306. And all of these are different symbols and different pictures of the same thing.

1307. That is, they're all describing God's people in every edge.

1308. And so, John uses these pictures, I think, to describe what he knows to be indescribable.

1309. It's beyond his finite ability just to capture it.

1310. And so, he's just searching for things and piling them up.

1311. And so, he starts by saying, verse 11 and verses 18 to 21, he uses the imagery of precious stones.

1312. And so, he sort of visualizes God's people as just this massive, massive chasm full of the most precious stones you can imagine.

1313. Everywhere you look, God's people are sparkling.

  1314. Why do they sparkle?

1315. Because Christ has made them new.

1316. He's restored them to true image bearers.

1317. What a beautiful picture to crave and long for.

1318. And then, verses 12 to 14, he goes on and uses what you might call a more military metaphor of picture.

1319. He describes God's people like a fortress.

1320. And this is an amazingly huge fortress.

1321. You can't dig under the waters, the walls, because there's 12 foundations.

1322. You can't knock the doors down because they're miles thick.

1323. You can't get over the top because it's so high.

1324. It is a perfectly safe, secure place.

1325. And it dominates the horizon.

  1326. Why?

1327. Because it's God's people in God's place enjoying the blessings of God's rule.

1328. And he goes on then to use a mathematical picture.

1329. God's people are like a perfect cube.

1330. You know, the same this way, this way, and that way.

1331. It was just seen to be perfection in that day when it was written.

1332. And he describes all these things.

1333. And then, verses 22 through to 27, he's sort of still despairing.

1334. He just can't quite get it.

1335. Like an artist who can't quite capture what's before him.

1336. And then he sort of backtracks and says, well, actually, let's just go back to what's really simple.

1337. Heaven is God's people gathered around Jesus.

1338. Those people who've been thirsty all their lives.

  1339. Verse 6.

1340. To the thirsty, I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.

1341. The Samaritan lady was so thirsty when she came to the well.

1342. She thought she was thirsty for water.

1343. But Jesus told her, no, no, no.

1344. Behind that thirst, there's an even deeper thirst.

  1345. You're thirsting for life.

1346. You don't know where to look for it.

  1347. But I do.

1348. Look to me for life, says Jesus.

1349. And your thirst will be quenched forever.

  1350. Can you imagine that?

1351. Well, that which we can only sort of grasp for in the depths of our minds with as many pictures as we can imagine,

1352. that will be the reality for us in the future.

1353. That is God's future that we now enjoy in part, but which will be delivered in fullness to us in the future.

1354. All right, I've got carried away here.

  1355. I need to stop.

1356. So, heaven, in summary, then, is Eden restored, only much better.

1357. In chapter 22, verse 1 to 5, you can see the pictures of Eden again.

1358. Once again, the river of life flows freely.

1359. Once again, it's a land of abundance and beauty and delight.

1360. Once again, the tree of life is available with no restrictions.

1361. The tree of the fruit of good and evil isn't there anymore.

1362. And I presume that's because there'll be no more craving independence that everybody will be happy to live under the Lord.

  1363. And gladly so.

1364. Once again, God looks at what he's created and says it's good.

1365. Once again, there's uninterrupted blessing and fellowship between the Lord and his people.

1366. How is it better than Eden?

1367. Because our righteousness and obedience is now sourced from Christ's work on our behalf.

1368. And in God's Spirit who has taken up residence in us.

1369. We have the genetic code of the second man.

  1370. The last man.

  1371. The true Adam.

  1372. Adam.

  1373. Adam.

  1374. Adam.

  1375. Adam.

  1376. Adam.

  1377. Adam.

  1378. Adam.

  1379. Adam.

1380. Friends, knowing the end from the beginning is the basis of the Christian hope.

  1381. Make it more personal.

1382. Knowing our end from our beginning is what gives us hope for the future.

1383. And it's only when we have hope for the future that we have the capacity to live well in the present.

1384. to live well now in this broken, dysfunctional world

  1385. with broken, dysfunctional bodies,

1386. knowing that what we have in Christ is real,

1387. but the best is yet to come.

1388. And the question then as I wind up,

  1389. do you believe that?

1390. Do you believe that is your inheritance?

1391. Do you believe this is your identity?

1392. Do you crave God as your ultimate expression of beauty?

1393. This is what we shall be in the age to come.

1394. This is what we are in a very real sense,

1395. this is what we are in a very real sense already now.

1396. So the question then is,

1397. why would we look longingly at the things,

1398. the hopeless forms of hope our world offers us?

1399. When true hope that understands our world

  1400. and understands our brokenness

1401. is to be found in relationship with Jesus.

1402. In the terms of Genesis 1-3,

1403. why would we keep trying to build our own paradise

1404. here in this earth under our own resources

1405. to try and answer the deep thirst of our soul

  1406. when Jesus says,

1407. come to me and drink freely

  1408. with no payment.

  1409. Friends,

1410. let's set ourselves this week

1411. to live in the light of heaven,

1412. not to live as those were stuck in the past

  1413. or the present

1414. in our brokenness and dysfunction.

  1415. Pray with me, please.

  1416. Lord,

1417. we thank you for pictures.

  1418. Pictures,

  1419. as they say,

  1420. paint a thousand words,

  1421. capture a thousand words.

1422. And the pictures of Revelation,

  1423. Lord,

1424. capture many, many more words than that

1425. and yet we can scarcely even

  1426. comprehend the pictures.

  1427. Lord,

  1428. our thirsty souls

  1429. do long for that

  1430. soul-satisfying water of life

1431. that you've already poured into us

1432. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  1433. and in your spirit.

1434. And we long for that, Lord,

1435. to be topped up to full measure

1436. in the age to come.

  1437. And so, Lord,

  1438. in the brokenness

1439. and the dysfunction of this world

1440. and in my own brokenness

  1441. and dysfunction,

1442. knowing the best is yet to come,

  1443. I just simply say,

  1444. come, Lord Jesus.
