  1. So 2 Timothy 3, verse 1 to 4, verse 5.

    2 Timothy 3:1–4

  2. But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty, for people

  3. will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents,

  4. ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal,

  5. not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than

  6. lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness but denying its power.

  7. Avoid such people, for among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women,

  8. burdened with sin and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to

  9. arrive at a knowledge of the truth.

  10. But just as Janus and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also opposed the truth, men corrupted

  11. in mind and disqualified regarding the faith.

  12. But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those

  13. two men.

  14. You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience,

  15. my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch,

  16. at Iconium and at Lystra, which persecutions I endured.

  17. Yet from them all the Lord rescued me.

  18. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil

  19. people and imposters will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

  20. But as for you, continue in what you have learnt and have firmly believed, knowing from whom

  21. you learnt it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which

  22. are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

  23. All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction and

  24. for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

  25. I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and

  26. the dead, and by his appearance and his kingdom, preach the word.

  27. Be ready in season and out of season.

  28. Reprove, rebuke and exhort with complete patience and teaching.

  29. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears,

  30. they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions and will turn away

  31. from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

  32. As for you, always be sober-minded.

  33. Endure suffering.

  34. Do the work of an evangelist.

  35. Fulfill your ministry.

  36. Well, good morning, everyone.

  37. For those who are visiting, I'm one of the pastors here.

  38. My name's David.

  39. David the Older.

  40. David the Ordinary.

  41. Yeah.

  42. So, you and I live in a huge world.

  43. It's a fragile world.

  44. And I think, oftentimes, it's just a scary world.

  45. We live in this huge, fragile, scary world alongside almost 8 billion other people.

  46. And our world is dwarfed.

  47. Our planet Earth that we live on here is dwarfed in our solar system, which in turn is dwarfed

  48. in our galaxy, the Milky Way, which in turn is immeasurably dwarfed by the universe.

  49. We are so small in our universe.

  50. And that begs the question that is in everybody's mind at some point in their life is, yes, we're

  51. small, but are we insignificant?

  52. That huge question of meaning and purpose explains in part why every one of us has what I'm calling

  53. this morning a voice in our head, a life voice.

  54. Words that are speaking into us all the time.

  55. A life script, perhaps you might call it.

  56. It's something that comes from outside ourselves and which we need to give ourselves some perspective

  57. in our smallness, to give ourselves a sense of meaning and purpose in this giant, humongous universe.

  58. We need that voice because it needs to be bigger than ourselves.

  59. Now, every person has it and every person listens to it.

  60. Not every person is aware they're listening to it, but every person listens to it.

  61. That voice actually defines and shapes how they think about themselves, how they think about

  62. our world and how they live in the world on a daily basis.

  63. It gives perspective to daily life.

  64. Now, for young children, I think that voice might well be just the voice of parents.

  65. That seems to be the size of their universe as young children.

  66. For teenagers, the universe gets a bit bigger, but not necessarily wiser.

  67. So that voice might just be the voice of peers.

  68. Dare I say the blind leading the blind.

  69. Social media.

  70. I don't know how you describe that.

  71. For adult Australians, the predominant voice is science.

  72. Science says, well, yes, I'm a very, very insignificant little cog in a very, very big mechanistic world,

  73. a big machine.

  74. It's impersonal.

  75. And it exists only by chance, by randomness.

  76. That doesn't really help with significance, does it?

  77. The problem is with that, is that people can't live as an insignificant part of a huge machine.

  78. People, by nature, crave relationship.

  79. We actually crave a beating heart at the center of our universe.

  80. We crave something and long for something and almost need something that's bigger than ourselves, bigger than what we can see.

  81. A being, whatever we call it, some form of God.

  82. People call it all sorts of different things.

  83. But there's a common longing for something bigger than ourselves, something or someone who will understand our universe and, in a sense, understand our part in that universe.

  84. And thereby, find significance for ourselves in that universe.

  85. And so, given that people can't live, really, with the voice of science, it's constantly in competition with the voice of religion, the voice of spirituality.

  86. And there's literally hundreds of thousands of different forms of that in our world.

  87. But it's so common.

  88. People want and need some form of God.

  89. Some one or some being who's there in the background.

  90. Someone who knows our world.

  91. Someone, in a sense, who sees us.

  92. Well, friends, what people long for, I want to tell you this morning, is at the heart of biblical Christianity.

  93. The key of Christianity is, at the heart of our universe, is a beating heart.

  94. Is a personal God.

  95. If we're to know that God and be known by him, he must be personal and speak.

  96. Now, at this point, I just want to stop and make a disclaimer here.

  97. I really wish that Adam's introduction this morning was my sermon introduction.

  98. I said to Alison as he was going through that.

  99. That's what I should have had as an introduction to my sermon.

  100. So, if you can reflect back to Adam's words, it's a much better introduction than mine.

  101. So, it's a really good thing because if we are to know God and be known by him, he must be personal and speak.

  102. Words are how we get to know people.

  103. Unless God took the initiative to tell us what he's like, to tell us what's in his mind, we would never be able to find out.

  104. We might have a vague sense that there's a God out there.

  105. But we wouldn't actually know.

  106. We couldn't live securely with knowledge of that God out there.

  107. What does he want of us?

  108. Does he want anything of us?

  109. Those sorts of things are beyond human discovery.

  110. In a world where science tells us that we can discover everything.

  111. Not so.

  112. Those things are beyond human discovery because God is outside of all human methods of investigation.

  113. And so, in speaking, God reveals things about himself.

  114. He reveals things about us.

  115. He reveals things about our world that otherwise would be hidden and unknowable.

  116. And as Adam said in his introduction, words are relational.

  117. So, as I speak to you over a period of time, you get to understand what I'm like.

  118. You get to see something of my character.

  119. You'll hear something of my aspirations.

  120. I'll express my thoughts.

  121. As Catherine said this morning, without words, very, very little can be known about someone.

  122. We can guess.

  123. We can hope.

  124. But unless we have words, very little may be known with certainty about another person.

  125. In this case, God.

  126. And there's a verse in Isaiah 55.

  127. I'm just going to turn to it now.

  128. You can listen or find it if you're quick at finding these things.

  129. In Isaiah 55, verse 8.

    Isaiah 55:8

  130. God tells us this through the words of Isaiah.

  131. God's word through Isaiah's words.

  132. We'll say more about that in a minute.

  133. God says this.

  134. For my thoughts are not your thoughts.

  135. Neither are your ways.

  136. My ways, declared the Lord.

  137. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways.

  138. And my thoughts than your thoughts.

  139. In other words, God's saying there's a great gulf between me and you.

  140. You couldn't span that gulf in your own resources.

  141. For as the rain and snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth,

  142. making it bear fruit and sprout,

  143. giving seed to the sower and bread theater,

  144. so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth.

  145. It shall not return to me empty,

  146. but it shall accomplish that which I purpose

  147. and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

  148. God's word bridges the gulf

  149. and makes God knowable to us.

  150. And more importantly for us,

  151. at an experiential level,

  152. makes it possible that we will be known by God.

  153. Now, first point of application.

  154. It's a small point and yet a big point.

  155. At a very, very practical level,

  156. that means that our knowledge of God

  157. is something that we need to see as a gift from God

  158. and value it as such.

  159. We're so familiar with God's word as Christians, aren't we?

  160. That we forget

  161. it is a really, really precious gift

  162. that God should speak to us

  163. and tell us about himself

  164. and tell us about ourselves.

  165. And as we saw in 2 Timothy 3,

  166. tell us about salvation.

  167. God's speaking to us,

  168. God's word,

  169. is a precious gift of grace and mercy

  170. from the Lord.

  171. Okay, next question.

  172. How does God speak?

  173. All right, we're saying God needs to speak

  174. and as he speaks,

  175. then we see his personality.

  176. God is personal as he speaks.

  177. But how does God speak?

  178. Well, you don't need to be rugged science

  179. to work this one out.

  180. We know that effective communication

  181. or relationship requires words.

  182. The best communication requires precise words,

  183. clearly spoken.

  184. In just the same way,

  185. God speaks into his world,

  186. into the lives of his people,

  187. using ordinary words.

  188. He uses ordinary words to reveal himself.

  189. And so God speaks meaningful statements

  190. about himself.

  191. He reveals in those meaningful statements,

  192. sentences,

  193. ordinary functions of language and grammar,

  194. he reveals his character.

  195. He reveals his physical relationship,

  196. his relationship to the physical universe.

  197. He reveals how he wants to relate to ourselves

  198. as his image bearers in the universe,

  199. as we've seen in Genesis 1-3.

  200. In speaking personally and precisely,

  201. God prescribes how we are to think about him.

  202. He says,

  203. this is what I'm like

  204. and this is how you should think about me

  205. and how you should engage with me.

  206. This is what you should believe about me,

  207. says the Lord.

  208. This is how you ought to respond to me

  209. when you hear me speak.

  210. And in turn,

  211. as we hear and get our picture filled out

  212. of what God is like,

  213. then that tells us something

  214. really, really important about ourselves

  215. in relation to God.

  216. How we're to think about ourselves

  217. individually and collectively as humans.

  218. Now we see this in Genesis 3,

  219. Genesis 1-3.

  220. Right through Genesis 1,

  221. God spoke and God said words,

  222. front and center,

  223. powerful words.

  224. God's word spoke our universe

  225. into existence

  226. in all its diversity,

  227. in all its differentiated parts

  228. and its single whole.

  229. God's word.

  230. spoken.

  231. And as he speaks,

  232. and we see that in Genesis 1-2-3,

  233. his words and the actions

  234. that come

  235. hot on the heels of his words,

  236. his words always achieve

  237. what he says,

  238. his words and the resultant actions

  239. reveal perfectly

  240. his character

  241. and his purpose.

  242. and God said,

  243. and it happened,

  244. and God's conclusion,

  245. it was good.

  246. It was exactly

  247. as God said it would be

  248. and deemed it would be.

  249. And in Genesis 1-2-3,

  250. we see what God's words speak of God.

  251. So it speaks,

  252. first of all,

  253. of his existence.

  254. God exists.

  255. He has to exist

  256. to be personal and speaking.

  257. And he existed before

  258. in the beginning.

  259. In the beginning,

  260. Genesis 1,

  261. but before the beginning,

  262. God existed in Trinity.

  263. Father,

  264. Son,

  265. and Spirit.

  266. It tells us,

  267. God's word tells us

  268. about God's creative power.

  269. Tells us about his goodness.

  270. Tells us about his personal glory

  271. reflected in his image bearers.

  272. It tells us about his desire

  273. to relate to his image bearers,

  274. loving and providing for them

  275. in abundance.

  276. It tells us about his holiness

  277. and majesty in Genesis 2,

  278. commanding his image bearers

  279. to live under his rule.

  280. And then in Genesis 3,

  281. calling his image bearers

  282. to account

  283. when they refuse

  284. to live under his rule.

  285. And then in the end

  286. of Genesis 3,

  287. it speaks of his steadfast love

  288. and commitment

  289. to his people

  290. and his world,

  291. even in the midst of

  292. and in the light of

  293. their rejection

  294. and rebellion.

  295. Huge amount we learn

  296. about God's character

  297. and God's purpose

  298. in those first three chapters

  299. of our Bible.

  300. So God speaks

  301. using ordinary words.

  302. And those words

  303. are recorded

  304. and preserved

  305. in what we call the Bible.

  306. So it's very appropriate

  307. to say that the Bible

  308. is God's words

  309. in men's words.

  310. So ask the question,

  311. well, how do we know

  312. what God's words were

  313. in the very beginning

  314. of our world?

  315. Adam and Eve

  316. were the only ones there.

  317. Maybe they didn't even hear

  318. those words

  319. and God said.

  320. So how do we know

  321. what God said?

  322. Answer,

  323. because we have the Bible.

  324. The Bible,

  325. by its own definition,

  326. is the written record

  327. of what God has said

  328. in relation to his world.

  329. God's words.

  330. God's words

  331. and that brings us

  332. to 2 Timothy 3, 16.

  333. Scripture is God-breathed.

  334. The word for breathed there

  335. is the same word

  336. that's used in other places

  337. and in Genesis 1, 1,

  338. for that matter,

  339. for the Holy Spirit.

  340. The point here, I think,

  341. is that just as

  342. the Holy Spirit

  343. was involved

  344. in the physical creation

  345. at the very beginning,

  346. so the Holy Spirit

  347. is fully involved

  348. in creating the Scriptures

  349. or what we call the Bible.

  350. And we're told,

  351. I don't have time

  352. to track through it all.

  353. You can research this

  354. for yourself.

  355. We're told that

  356. the Holy Spirit

  357. oversees supernaturally

  358. a range of ordinary people

  359. writing in the different centuries

  360. at different times

  361. and different circumstances

  362. and he oversees them

  363. supernaturally

  364. to record precisely

  365. what God wants them to write.

  366. And here's the point.

  367. It is so precise

  368. and so accurate

  369. under the Holy Spirit's

  370. superintending

  371. that we can say

  372. with confidence

  373. that when we read

  374. these words,

  375. here in 2023,

  376. here in 2023,

  377. that they are just

  378. as real

  379. and living

  380. and direct

  381. and just as much

  382. God speaking

  383. as if God himself

  384. was standing here

  385. in front of us

  386. this morning.

  387. that's what the scripture

  388. itself says of scripture.

  389. Now that doesn't mean

  390. the writers,

  391. the Bible writers

  392. were mindless robots.

  393. No.

  394. The Holy Spirit

  395. superintended

  396. the normal function

  397. and faculties

  398. of each of those

  399. individual writers

  400. so that not only

  401. do we have

  402. God's word recorded

  403. over generations

  404. but we see a lot

  405. of different

  406. personality types.

  407. We see a range

  408. of styles

  409. but all combining

  410. to be God's

  411. recorded word.

  412. God's words

  413. in man's words.

  414. And the next thing

  415. is then

  416. we need to understand

  417. that that revelation

  418. of God in words

  419. is progressive.

  420. As we move

  421. through the Bible

  422. from Genesis

  423. right through

  424. to the end

  425. we see the progressiveness

  426. as God

  427. excuse me

  428. as God speaks

  429. he unfurls

  430. his plan

  431. of salvation.

  432. Now again

  433. as in any relationship

  434. the longer it lasts

  435. the more deeply

  436. we get to know

  437. the person

  438. we're relating to.

  439. And so it's the same.

  440. God's revelation

  441. of himself

  442. gets richer

  443. and fuller

  444. and clearer

  445. as we track

  446. through what we

  447. call the Bible.

  448. As we trace

  449. his relationship

  450. and see his

  451. salvation plan

  452. unfurl through history.

  453. And again

  454. we see that principle

  455. in Genesis 1-3.

  456. I'll demonstrate it there

  457. and then I'll be

  458. jumping back

  459. to the New Testament

  460. again.

  461. So when you look

  462. at Genesis 1-2

  463. then we see

  464. a lot about

  465. God's character.

  466. but in Genesis 3

  467. we see

  468. aspects of

  469. God's character

  470. that I believe

  471. couldn't possibly

  472. have been known

  473. in the time frame

  474. of Genesis 1-2.

  475. So in

  476. Genesis 1-2

  477. God's a creative God

  478. he's a good God

  479. he's a personal God

  480. but it's not until

  481. we get to Genesis 3

  482. that we see an aspect

  483. of God's character

  484. that would have been

  485. new to Adam and Eve

  486. that is

  487. we see that God

  488. is a God of wrath

  489. a God who takes

  490. himself very

  491. very seriously

  492. and who will act

  493. decisively

  494. with those

  495. who reject him

  496. and refuse to live

  497. under his rule.

  498. And we'll see

  499. in Genesis 3

  500. he's a God of judgment.

  501. There are consequences

  502. for stepping out

  503. from under the authority

  504. of this good

  505. creative God

  506. that we meet

  507. in Genesis 1-2.

  508. and in the end

  509. of Genesis 3

  510. we also see

  511. that this is a God

  512. of grace

  513. and mercy

  514. and compassion.

  515. You see

  516. it's progressive revelation

  517. three chapters in

  518. and we're already

  519. starting to build

  520. a much richer picture

  521. of God's character

  522. and God's purposes.

  523. And progressive revelation

  524. continues throughout

  525. the Old Testament

  526. as God speaks

  527. to his people

  528. in covenant

  529. relationship

  530. with them.

  531. Each book

  532. of the Bible

  533. each generation

  534. each circumstance

  535. each event

  536. we get another

  537. little bit

  538. of the picture

  539. until

  540. the process

  541. is completed

  542. with Jesus.

  543. Why is it

  544. completed with Jesus?

  545. Well

  546. you need to turn

  547. with me to Hebrews

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  548. chapter 1

  549. to start putting

  550. that point

  551. down

  552. in concrete terms.

  553. So the writer

  554. of Hebrews

  555. says this

  556. in Hebrews

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  557. chapter 1

  558. Long ago

  559. at many times

  560. and in many places

  561. God spoke to

  562. our fathers

  563. by the prophets

  564. but in these

  565. last days

  566. he has spoken

  567. to us

  568. by his son

  569. whom he appointed

  570. the heir

  571. of all things

  572. through whom

  573. also he created

  574. the world.

  575. He is the radiance

  576. of the glory

  577. of God

  578. and the exact

  579. imprint

  580. of his nature

  581. and he upholds

  582. the universe

  583. by his word

  584. and by his word

  585. of his power

  586. and after

  587. making purifications

  588. for sins

  589. he sat down

  590. at the right hand

  591. of the majesty

  592. on high.

  593. Progressive

  594. revelation

  595. we get

  596. an increasingly

  597. clear picture

  598. of God

  599. and his purposes

  600. and salvation

  601. until we get

  602. to Jesus

  603. and when we get

  604. to Jesus

  605. we've got the

  606. final piece

  607. of the puzzle.

  608. The one piece

  609. of the puzzle

  610. in a sense

  611. makes sense

  612. of all the

  613. other pieces

  614. that come

  615. before it.

  616. If you want

  617. to know

  618. what God

  619. says

  620. look at Jesus

  621. he's the exact

  622. imprint.

  623. If you want

  624. to see the

  625. creative power

  626. of God

  627. look at Jesus

  628. he's the radiance

  629. of God's glory.

  630. Do you want

  631. to know

  632. what God

  633. is like?

  634. Look at Jesus

  635. he's been

  636. with Jesus

  637. since before

  638. the creation

  639. of the world.

  640. He's been

  641. with God

  642. since before

  643. the creation

  644. of the world.

  645. He is God

  646. before the creation

  647. of the world.

  648. God has spoken

  649. most plainly

  650. God has spoken

  651. lots

  652. throughout the

  653. Old Testament

  654. but he's spoken

  655. most plainly

  656. and finally

  657. in Jesus.

  658. In other words

  659. God has nothing

  660. more to say

  661. in terms

  662. of his salvation

  663. plan.

  664. is fully

  665. embodied

  666. and fulfilled

  667. in Jesus.

  668. We see the same

  669. thing in John

    John 1:1–18

  670. chapter 1

  671. verse 1

  672. to 18

  673. where that

  674. famous passage

  675. of the word

  676. the word

  677. becomes flesh

  678. and again

  679. I don't have time

  680. to read it all

  681. but the highlight

  682. of that introduction

  683. is

  684. that the word

  685. you can't get

  686. any more personal

  687. than that

  688. than saying

  689. the word

  690. actually becomes

  691. flesh.

  692. God's

  693. creative

  694. saving

  695. word

  696. actually

  697. becomes

  698. flesh

  699. in the person

  700. of Jesus

  701. and dwells

  702. among us.

  703. Why?

  704. That we might

  705. have new life.

  706. Now again

  707. just to

  708. pause on the

  709. way through

  710. here

  711. and just

  712. score a point

  713. by way of

  714. something to

  715. think about

  716. application wise.

  717. What that

  718. means I

  719. believe

  720. and I think

  721. we've lost

  722. that in

  723. so many

  724. places in

  725. the Christian

  726. church

  727. what it

  728. means is

  729. that all

  730. religious

  731. experience

  732. all religious

  733. authority

  734. must be

  735. evaluated

  736. against the

  737. words of

  738. Jesus.

  739. If he

  740. is the

  741. complete

  742. the

  743. fulfillment

  744. of God's

  745. word

  746. the final

  747. God's

  748. word

  749. then

  750. whatever

  751. Jesus

  752. says

  753. has to

  754. be the

  755. measure

  756. of what

  757. God's

  758. will

  759. and

  760. purpose

  761. in our

  762. world

  763. is

  764. and in

  765. the

  766. church.

  767. How do

  768. we fit

  769. the New

  770. Testament

  771. into that?

  772. Well

  773. the New

  774. Testament

  775. was written

  776. by divinely

  777. appointed

  778. apostles

  779. who took

  780. the words

  781. of Jesus

  782. and applied

  783. them

  784. under the

  785. supernatural

  786. superintending

  787. of the

  788. Holy Spirit

  789. applied them

  790. in the

  791. building

  792. of the

  793. church

  794. and so

  795. the record

  796. of the

  797. New Testament

  798. is the

  799. record

  800. of the

  801. word

  802. God's

  803. words

  804. through

  805. Jesus

  806. as the

  807. Old

  808. Testament

  809. is the

  810. record

  811. of God's

  812. spoken word

  813. into his

  814. world.

  815. Well

  816. that's how

  817. God speaks.

  818. Why does

  819. God speak?

  820. Well

  821. the first

  822. thing I want

  823. to say

  824. here is

  825. that God

  826. doesn't

  827. need to

  828. speak

  829. really.

  830. Sometimes

  831. we speak

  832. or you

  833. know

  834. sometimes

  835. you have

  836. the person

  837. who speaks

  838. would never

  839. be me

  840. but they

  841. speak because

  842. they're lonely

  843. or because

  844. there's a

  845. space and

  846. they have to

  847. fill it

  848. with words.

  849. God's not

  850. like that.

  851. He's not

  852. lonely.

  853. He's not

  854. filling up

  855. some longing

  856. or deficiency

  857. in himself.

  858. His purpose

  859. in speaking

  860. is very

  861. very purposeful

  862. and that

  863. is to

  864. deliver us

  865. into

  866. unending

  867. pleasure

  868. with him.

  869. In other

  870. words

  871. God

  872. speaks

  873. in order

  874. that we

  875. might be

  876. friends

  877. with him

  878. that we

  879. might be

  880. in relationship

  881. with him.

  882. Again

  883. we've seen

  884. in the past

  885. few weeks

  886. Genesis 1

  887. to 3

  888. that we

  889. learn that

  890. people there

  891. people were

  892. created

  893. people are

  894. made

  895. to know

  896. God.

  897. Our purpose

  898. in life

  899. is to know

  900. God and

  901. enjoy him.

  902. The good

  903. life, the

  904. best life

  905. that we

  906. were created

  907. for is

  908. the life

  909. lived under

  910. God and

  911. with God.

  912. Those are

  913. all themes

  914. from Genesis

  915. 1 to 3.

  916. Jesus

  917. reinforces

  918. that truth

  919. and makes

  920. it more

  921. precise in

  922. John 17

  923. that famous

  924. prayer on

  925. the eve of

  926. his crucifixion.

  927. He says

  928. this is

  929. life.

  930. They might

  931. know him

  932. who sent

  933. me and

  934. know me.

  935. In other

  936. words God

  937. speaks.

  938. The reason

  939. I'm here

  940. as the

  941. word living

  942. and dwelling

  943. among you

  944. is that

  945. you might

  946. have true

  947. life,

  948. eternal

  949. life.

  950. that you

  951. might be

  952. in

  953. relationship

  954. with God

  955. forever.

  956. Friends,

  957. why does

  958. God speak?

  959. Well,

  960. ultimately

  961. he speaks

  962. that we

  963. might receive

  964. salvation

  965. and fellowship

  966. with him

  967. forever.

  968. Now,

  969. again,

  970. see the

  971. potential

  972. disconnect

  973. there.

  974. That means,

  975. again,

  976. if God

  977. hadn't

  978. spoken,

  979. there

  980. wouldn't be

  981. salvation,

  982. there

  983. wouldn't be

  984. fellowship.

  985. Flip the

  986. coin again.

  987. That means

  988. we're made

  989. as rational

  990. beings,

  991. and we

  992. are rational

  993. beings,

  994. well,

  995. at least

  996. some of

  997. the time.

  998. We're

  999. supposed to

  1000. be rational

  1001. beings.

  1002. We're able

  1003. to think,

  1004. we're able

  1005. to act

  1006. on our

  1007. environment,

  1008. we're able

  1009. to love,

  1010. listen,

  1011. speak.

  1012. Why do

  1013. we do

  1014. all those

  1015. things?

  1016. Ultimately,

  1017. for us as

  1018. people,

  1019. we do

  1020. all those

  1021. things because

  1022. they're elements

  1023. of creating

  1024. relationship and

  1025. building

  1026. relationship.

  1027. They're elements

  1028. of affection

  1029. and commitment.

  1030. And God

  1031. has made us

  1032. as we are,

  1033. his image

  1034. bearers,

  1035. that we

  1036. might be

  1037. able to

  1038. engage in

  1039. meaningful,

  1040. reciprocal

  1041. relationship

  1042. with him.

  1043. So,

  1044. God doesn't

  1045. want to

  1046. relate to

  1047. us like

  1048. a farmer

  1049. relates to

  1050. a sheep

  1051. dog.

  1052. Get behind.

  1053. No,

  1054. he wants

  1055. to relate

  1056. to us

  1057. more like

  1058. the picture

  1059. of a

  1060. husband and

  1061. wife,

  1062. a father

  1063. and son,

  1064. or two

  1065. besties,

  1066. whatever

  1067. picture it

  1068. is.

  1069. It's that

  1070. picture of

  1071. intimacy,

  1072. a picture

  1073. of affection,

  1074. reciprocal

  1075. nature.

  1076. So,

  1077. God speaks.

  1078. And because

  1079. God is

  1080. committed to

  1081. this friendship,

  1082. being living

  1083. and active,

  1084. then it's

  1085. not a

  1086. surprise that

  1087. his word

  1088. is described

  1089. as living

  1090. and dynamic

  1091. and active,

  1092. as a guide

  1093. throughout life.

  1094. Again,

  1095. the only way

  1096. to make

  1097. friends is

  1098. to speak

  1099. and keep

  1100. on speaking.

  1101. If a friendship

  1102. is going to

  1103. survive,

  1104. it needs to be

  1105. fed with

  1106. words and

  1107. affections.

  1108. God speaks

  1109. to his image

  1110. bearers.

  1111. He finds

  1112. joy in

  1113. giving us

  1114. gifts.

  1115. And we

  1116. find our

  1117. joy in

  1118. giving him

  1119. thanks.

  1120. Again,

  1121. back in

  1122. 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 3:16

  1123. chapter 3

  1124. verse 16

  1125. again.

  1126. God's

  1127. greatest gift

  1128. is new

  1129. life in

  1130. Christ.

  1131. And his

  1132. word,

  1133. we're told

  1134. there,

  1135. and notice

  1136. the tense,

  1137. his word,

  1138. though written

  1139. in the past,

  1140. present tense,

  1141. is able.

  1142. It's

  1143. living,

  1144. it's dynamic,

  1145. it's active,

  1146. is able to

  1147. bring us to

  1148. salvation.

  1149. But much

  1150. more,

  1151. it's able,

  1152. and again,

  1153. notice the

  1154. present tense

  1155. written in the

  1156. past,

  1157. but is able

  1158. to guide us

  1159. and nurture us

  1160. into the life

  1161. of righteousness,

  1162. the life of

  1163. Christ-likeness,

  1164. or in the

  1165. words there,

  1166. to make us

  1167. true men and

  1168. true women

  1169. as we were

  1170. created to be.

  1171. And since

  1172. God hasn't

  1173. changed,

  1174. his voice to

  1175. the world

  1176. hasn't changed.

  1177. So the

  1178. Bible you have

  1179. in your hands

  1180. this morning

  1181. or on your

  1182. device,

  1183. the Bible you

  1184. have this

  1185. morning is

  1186. God's current

  1187. living,

  1188. active,

  1189. dynamic word

  1190. to you today

  1191. in 2023

  1192. as it was

  1193. when it was

  1194. first spoken.

  1195. The Bible

  1196. is God's

  1197. complete message

  1198. to his world.

  1199. Now,

  1200. it never

  1201. claims to

  1202. say everything

  1203. there is to

  1204. know about

  1205. God.

  1206. That's an

  1207. important thing.

  1208. Sometimes we

  1209. want the

  1210. Bible to

  1211. say more

  1212. than it's

  1213. ever promised

  1214. to say.

  1215. It never

  1216. claims to

  1217. say everything

  1218. there is to

  1219. know about

  1220. God,

  1221. but it

  1222. does claim

  1223. that it

  1224. says everything

  1225. we need

  1226. to know

  1227. to live

  1228. well in

  1229. God's

  1230. world as

  1231. God's

  1232. people.

  1233. So,

  1234. final question.

  1235. What should

  1236. be our

  1237. response to

  1238. God's

  1239. personal

  1240. words and

  1241. promises?

  1242. Well,

  1243. I think it's

  1244. a very simple

  1245. equation.

  1246. The shape

  1247. of God's

  1248. revelation

  1249. determines

  1250. the shape

  1251. of our

  1252. response.

  1253. God's

  1254. revelation

  1255. comes to

  1256. us in

  1257. words and

  1258. statements

  1259. and commands

  1260. and promises

  1261. our response.

  1262. ought to

  1263. be in

  1264. terms of

  1265. listening,

  1266. hating,

  1267. and obeying,

  1268. believing,

  1269. trusting.

  1270. It's that

  1271. simple.

  1272. In other

  1273. words,

  1274. we ought to

  1275. be,

  1276. our first

  1277. response ought

  1278. to be active

  1279. listening to

  1280. God's word.

  1281. Now,

  1282. the danger

  1283. of not

  1284. listening is

  1285. so real

  1286. for us and

  1287. so dangerous.

  1288. Genesis 3,

  1289. the very

  1290. first instance

  1291. of God's

  1292. people when

  1293. they stopped

  1294. listening to

  1295. God,

  1296. choosing not

  1297. to hear

  1298. God's word,

  1299. choosing not

  1300. to heed

  1301. God's word.

  1302. And Genesis

  1303. 3 describes

  1304. that as an

  1305. act of

  1306. arrogant

  1307. rebellion.

  1308. how significant

  1309. was it?

  1310. Well,

  1311. it was

  1312. whole of

  1313. life

  1314. changing.

  1315. It was

  1316. generationally

  1317. changing.

  1318. It was a

  1319. catastrophe.

  1320. One

  1321. simple act

  1322. of stopping

  1323. listening to

  1324. God's word,

  1325. and here's the

  1326. consequences.

  1327. But it

  1328. wasn't just

  1329. that simple

  1330. act of

  1331. stopping

  1332. listening to

  1333. God's word,

  1334. because as they

  1335. stopped listening

  1336. to God's

  1337. voice,

  1338. God's word,

  1339. then they

  1340. actually started

  1341. listening to

  1342. their own

  1343. voice,

  1344. their own

  1345. words.

  1346. Well,

  1347. I'm not going

  1348. to be limited

  1349. by God's

  1350. command.

  1351. I'm very

  1352. capable of

  1353. deciding what's

  1354. good and bad.

  1355. I don't need

  1356. God to do

  1357. that for me.

  1358. They listened

  1359. to Satan's

  1360. lies.

  1361. Well,

  1362. come on,

  1363. it's not that

  1364. big a deal.

  1365. So,

  1366. it's not just

  1367. that we stop

  1368. listening to

  1369. God and then

  1370. there's a

  1371. vacuum.

  1372. As we stop

  1373. listening to

  1374. God's word,

  1375. then we start

  1376. listening to

  1377. other words,

  1378. the voices that

  1379. come to us

  1380. from our

  1381. society,

  1382. from our

  1383. culture.

  1384. After they

  1385. sinned,

  1386. we see the

  1387. same thing

  1388. happening again.

  1389. They were

  1390. hiding from

  1391. God's word.

  1392. They didn't

  1393. want to engage

  1394. with God's

  1395. word.

  1396. Genesis

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  1397. chapter 4.

  1398. Cain kills

  1399. Abel.

  1400. How can we

  1401. pitch that?

  1402. Well, I'm

  1403. going to pitch

  1404. it in these

  1405. terms.

  1406. Why did

  1407. Cain kill

  1408. Abel?

  1409. Well, I

  1410. think Cain

  1411. killed Abel

  1412. to silence

  1413. the voice of

  1414. righteousness

  1415. that Abel

  1416. had expressed

  1417. to Cain,

  1418. which exposed

  1419. Cain's shabby

  1420. attitude to

  1421. the Lord.

  1422. Cain's

  1423. mind.

  1424. And so we

  1425. have the

  1426. voice of

  1427. self-protection

  1428. in Cain's

  1429. mind, the

  1430. voice of

  1431. self-defense

  1432. showing itself

  1433. to be so

  1434. ruthless that

  1435. it would try

  1436. and silence

  1437. the voice of

  1438. righteousness

  1439. rather than

  1440. repent and

  1441. say sorry

  1442. to God.

  1443. God.

  1444. It's

  1445. dangerous to

  1446. stop listening

  1447. to God's

  1448. voice.

  1449. Hebrews

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  1450. chapter 3.

  1451. I'll just

  1452. reference it.

  1453. I don't have

  1454. time to even

  1455. go to it.

  1456. Hebrews

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  1457. chapter 3

  1458. notes how

  1459. God's people

  1460. spent 40

  1461. years in the

  1462. wilderness.

  1463. Now, there's

  1464. many reasons

  1465. why they spent

  1466. 40 years in

  1467. the wilderness.

  1468. What was the

  1469. summary in

  1470. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  1471. 3?

  1472. They stopped

  1473. listening to

  1474. God's voice

  1475. voice and

  1476. paid the

  1477. consequences

  1478. for it.

  1479. What were

  1480. they listening

  1481. to instead

  1482. of God's

  1483. voice?

  1484. Well, they

  1485. were listening

  1486. to a

  1487. romanticized

  1488. version of

  1489. their life

  1490. in Egypt.

  1491. At least we

  1492. had onions

  1493. to eat back

  1494. there.

  1495. It was a

  1496. crazy voice,

  1497. but they were

  1498. listening to

  1499. that rather

  1500. than listening

  1501. to God's

  1502. voice.

  1503. And friends,

  1504. we're not

  1505. any different.

  1506. I think it's

  1507. incredibly sad.

  1508. Even stronger.

  1509. It's just so

  1510. wrong to

  1511. observe

  1512. believers.

  1513. Remember,

  1514. believers are

  1515. those who

  1516. claim to

  1517. value relationship

  1518. with God,

  1519. who claim to

  1520. value God's

  1521. word.

  1522. It's just so

  1523. sad and so

  1524. wrong to

  1525. see believers

  1526. form conclusions

  1527. about issues

  1528. and make life

  1529. decisions.

  1530. without reference

  1531. to God's

  1532. word.

  1533. How does

  1534. that happen?

  1535. We're

  1536. actually under

  1537. increasing

  1538. pressure to

  1539. shut down

  1540. God's voice,

  1541. God's words

  1542. in our mind

  1543. and go with

  1544. the voice of

  1545. popular belief.

  1546. belief.

  1547. Haven't been

  1548. able to turn

  1549. on the TV

  1550. to watch the

  1551. news for the

  1552. last two

  1553. weeks.

  1554. All against

  1555. gay pride,

  1556. gay Mardi

  1557. Gras.

  1558. The voice of

  1559. popular pressure,

  1560. popular belief.

  1561. belief.

  1562. It's even more

  1563. sad, I think,

  1564. and I observe

  1565. this all too

  1566. often to see

  1567. believers,

  1568. those who've

  1569. been Christians

  1570. for many,

  1571. many years,

  1572. find themselves

  1573. in a position

  1574. where they're

  1575. almost illiterate

  1576. in terms of

  1577. what God's

  1578. voice would

  1579. be on this

  1580. particular issue

  1581. or that

  1582. particular issue.

  1583. How does

  1584. that be?

  1585. We're tooled

  1586. up with

  1587. information at

  1588. so many other

  1589. points of

  1590. reference.

  1591. Why aren't

  1592. we so tooled

  1593. up when it

  1594. comes to

  1595. God's word?

  1596. Friends,

  1597. it's as simple

  1598. as this.

  1599. Our view of

  1600. God,

  1601. Father,

  1602. Son,

  1603. and Holy

  1604. Spirit,

  1605. is inseparably

  1606. tied to

  1607. our view

  1608. of God's

  1609. word.

  1610. It just

  1611. goes together.

  1612. Careless

  1613. in respect

  1614. to God's

  1615. word,

  1616. careless in

  1617. respect to

  1618. God.

  1619. The proper

  1620. hearing of

  1621. God's word

  1622. will overflow

  1623. in determined

  1624. action,

  1625. a life of

  1626. belief,

  1627. faith,

  1628. or trust.

  1629. God's word

  1630. God's word

  1631. is

  1632. God's word

  1633. speaks

  1634. primarily

  1635. because he

  1636. wants to be

  1637. in relationship

  1638. with his

  1639. image bearers,

  1640. since he

  1641. promises salvation,

  1642. since he

  1643. promises the

  1644. good life,

  1645. since he

  1646. promises the

  1647. life of

  1648. abundance,

  1649. and says,

  1650. this is how

  1651. you get it,

  1652. then

  1653. our

  1654. determined

  1655. action ought

  1656. to be

  1657. a life of

  1658. faith,

  1659. a life of

  1660. belief.

  1661. God has

  1662. said it,

  1663. will accept

  1664. it.

  1665. God has

  1666. promised it.

  1667. I'll live my

  1668. life trusting

  1669. in it.

  1670. God has

  1671. declared it.

  1672. I dare not

  1673. look for an

  1674. alternative source

  1675. of truth on

  1676. it.

  1677. So I'm just

  1678. going to finish

  1679. by asking

  1680. a question.

  1681. Whose voice

  1682. has captured

  1683. your head,

  1684. your mind,

  1685. your heart?

  1686. Whose voice,

  1687. therefore,

  1688. I'm asking you,

  1689. is shaping

  1690. your life daily,

  1691. informing your

  1692. decisions,

  1693. determining the

  1694. point at which

  1695. you will pivot

  1696. and resist

  1697. our society?

  1698. I'm just

  1699. going to

  1700. I'm seeing

  1701. increasingly in

  1702. evangelical circles

  1703. even,

  1704. that churches

  1705. are trying to

  1706. use something

  1707. other than

  1708. God's word

  1709. to build

  1710. churches,

  1711. to build

  1712. communities of

  1713. Christ's people,

  1714. to build

  1715. maturity.

  1716. humanity.

  1717. That's got to

  1718. be hopeless,

  1719. hasn't it?

  1720. At the very

  1721. least in

  1722. Congress,

  1723. that we who

  1724. say we

  1725. delight in

  1726. the Lord

  1727. would be

  1728. listening to

  1729. some other

  1730. voice to

  1731. grow ourselves

  1732. into maturity.

  1733. It doesn't

  1734. make sense.

  1735. And yet I think

  1736. all too often

  1737. is true.

  1738. So we need

  1739. to be asking

  1740. ourselves

  1741. individually,

  1742. and we need

  1743. to ask it

  1744. analytically of

  1745. our whole church

  1746. family here.

  1747. Are we

  1748. listening to

  1749. God's voice?

  1750. Are we

  1751. hating God's

  1752. voice?

  1753. Are we

  1754. determined to

  1755. act in the

  1756. light of God's

  1757. voice?

  1758. At every

  1759. point in

  1760. how we

  1761. relate to

  1762. one another,

  1763. in how we

  1764. deal with

  1765. difficulties with

  1766. one another,

  1767. in what we

  1768. teach people

  1769. as the

  1770. hope and

  1771. certainties of

  1772. life looking

  1773. forward into

  1774. the future?

  1775. We've got to

  1776. ask ourselves,

  1777. well, if we

  1778. say we're

  1779. listening to

  1780. God's word,

  1781. then what

  1782. difference is

  1783. it making in

  1784. your life?

  1785. Is it

  1786. something you

  1787. delight in?

  1788. Is it

  1789. something you

  1790. crave to

  1791. understand and

  1792. apply more?

  1793. That is God's

  1794. word as a

  1795. written record.

  1796. Do you see

  1797. and appreciate

  1798. and savour the

  1799. perfection of

  1800. God's word for

  1801. every aspect of

  1802. your life?

  1803. To grow you,

  1804. to lead you,

  1805. to keep you in

  1806. every circumstance

  1807. of life, to

  1808. deliver you safely

  1809. into the next

  1810. life?

  1811. Do you pray

  1812. that God's

  1813. living act of

  1814. word will

  1815. crash through

  1816. your defensiveness

  1817. and expose

  1818. your sin?

  1819. or you still

  1820. want to hide

  1821. from God's

  1822. word in

  1823. those key

  1824. areas of

  1825. sin that you

  1826. find yourself

  1827. loving all

  1828. too much?

  1829. That's what I

  1830. know.

  1831. I do that

  1832. myself, so I'm

  1833. not asking you

  1834. something I

  1835. haven't asked

  1836. myself.

  1837. It's

  1838. shameful.

  1839. we need to

  1840. ask the Lord

  1841. to crash

  1842. through our

  1843. defense and

  1844. to expose

  1845. our sin so

  1846. that we might

  1847. repent and

  1848. become all the

  1849. more appreciative

  1850. of the grace we

  1851. have in Christ.

  1852. The only option I

  1853. can think is that

  1854. God's voice is just

  1855. annoying white noise

  1856. in the background

  1857. while you're busy

  1858. trying to listen to

  1859. another voice.

  1860. it's sometimes

  1861. infuriating in a

  1862. shopping center or

  1863. a party or

  1864. something where

  1865. there's too many

  1866. competing voices

  1867. and you know you

  1868. should be listening

  1869. to this particular

  1870. voice but it's

  1871. just a bit of

  1872. white noise in the

  1873. background because

  1874. you're actually

  1875. trying to listen

  1876. to somebody else's

  1877. conversation over

  1878. there.

  1879. Well,

  1880. are you listening

  1881. to another voice

  1882. that's promising

  1883. you a better

  1884. life down a

  1885. different pathway?

  1886. Even as you're

  1887. sitting here this

  1888. morning,

  1889. I would mean you

  1890. to say,

  1891. and I might get

  1892. myself in trouble

  1893. for this,

  1894. but sadly I think

  1895. there's way too

  1896. many like this

  1897. in our church

  1898. for whom God's

  1899. voice is just

  1900. white noise in

  1901. the background

  1902. while they're busy

  1903. trying to listen

  1904. to another voice.

  1905. I just want you

  1906. to consider this

  1907. morning if that's

  1908. actually you.

  1909. Well,

  1910. pray with me.

  1911. Lord, we thank you

  1912. that you've chosen

  1913. to speak to us,

  1914. that you revealed

  1915. yourself to be a

  1916. personal God who

  1917. loves to be in

  1918. relationship with us,

1919. who wants to be in

  1920. relationship with us,

  1921. who's actually defined

  1922. relationship and provided

  1923. everything needed for

  1924. that relationship to be

  1925. loving and secure and

  1926. affectionate and forever.

1927. Lord, forgive us for not

  1928. listening to you,

  1929. for not hating you,

  1930. for not being determined

1931. in our actions of faith

1932. and trust and belief in

  1933. response.

  1934. forgiveness and more

  1935. specifically,

1936. Lord, forgive us when we

  1937. silence your voice and

  1938. listen to other voices,

1939. whether it's the voice of

1940. society or the voice of

1941. temptation or the voice of

  1942. self-indulgence.

  1943. forgiveness and more

  1944. forgiveness and more

  1945. forgive us, we pray,

1946. Lord, and make us delight in

  1947. your word once again.

1948. In Jesus' name I pray.

  1949. Amen.

  1950. Amen.
