  1. My name's Dave, I'm one of the pastors here.

  2. A warm welcome to you if you're new this morning.

  3. If you're not new, a warm welcome to you too.

  4. You're quite welcome as well.

  5. Alright, why don't we pray as we come to God's Word.

  6. Father, I pray that you would more clearly show each one of us

  7. how beautiful you are in the face of Jesus

  8. through your Word this morning.

  9. And I pray that you would fill us who know you

  10. with a deeper sense of privilege and calling

  11. to bring honour and to show who Jesus is

  12. in all of our life.

  13. And I pray that your Word and your Spirit

  14. might be working powerfully to open any eyes

  15. that haven't seen the beauty of Jesus yet.

  16. And I pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  17. Could I just ask Sam, would you mind turning this fan off?

  18. I'm a bit worried.

  19. Although it's lovely, my pages are going to go everywhere.

  20. Okay.

  21. Well, we all know glory when we see it.

  22. Let me just get organised here.

  23. One second.

  24. Okay.

  25. Alright.

  26. Let's start again.

  27. We all know glory when we see it.

  28. We use that word even still.

  29. Like even non-Christians will use that word.

  30. Like what a glorious sunrise it was this morning.

  31. Did you see the game last night?

  32. That final play?

  33. That was glorious.

  34. Wow.

  35. She's stunning.

  36. People at a music concert,

  37. just feeling like they're being lifted up,

  38. that transcendence.

  39. And it's just like feeling like they're sensing glory in that concert.

  40. I think we all know glory when we see it.

  41. And if you're struggling with that word glory,

  42. just think beauty.

  43. Awe-inspiring beauty.

  44. We all know it when we see it.

  45. Sometimes I think when we are enjoying a display of one type of glory,

  46. like two great tennis players just battling it out,

  47. sometimes a greater glory invades the moment and just surpasses it.

  48. Like when one of the players sacrifices the point by being honest

  49. that the opponent's ball actually landed in.

  50. That's what makes the headlines the next day.

  51. You think you're watching these great tennis players

  52. and all of a sudden such a selfless act,

  53. you just hit with a greater glory.

  54. Or someone running in a race that they've been training for forever

  55. give up the race to help an injured competitor.

  56. You're just like, we all know glory when we see it

  57. and sometimes we think we're watching glory

  58. and a greater glory just invades the moment.

  59. So where can people see the glory,

  60. the awe-inspiring beauty of God?

  61. Where can you see it?

  62. Surely it's in the starry heavens, isn't it?

  63. The heavens declare the glory of God.

  64. Now, I've got a little video, if it works,

  65. and I'm hoping I don't get in trouble for copyright

  66. either from God or my dad.

  67. You can see the aurora down the bottom.

  68. Come on, surely that's where you see

  69. the awe-inspiring beauty of God.

  70. But then Genesis 1 tells us,

  71. while the stars do declare God's glory,

  72. it is most clearly designed to be seen in you.

  73. In me.

  74. Genesis 1, God made mankind as the pinnacle of creation,

  75. the bridge between heaven and earth.

  76. In 126, we get an insight into the eternal Godhead

  77. making their plans.

  78. Let us make man in our image after our likeness.

  79. And just so we don't miss how special people are,

  80. the word for create, that only God does this sort of creating,

  81. not when you do an artwork or something.

  82. The word for create in 1 verse 1 of Genesis,

  83. when he makes everything out of nothing,

  84. that special word is used again when animals are made.

  85. So animals are obviously special as well.

  86. But then three times when we're made, that word is used.

  87. That's Hebrew way of going bold, italics, underline.

  88. This is special.

  89. And then in Genesis 2,

  90. the Lord breathes breath of life into our nostrils

  91. or into Adam's nostrils.

  92. Somehow we're sharing in the spirit of the Lord.

  93. We see Adam ruling over the animals,

  94. which is what someone in authority does.

  95. Only the parents get to name a child.

  96. We're ruling over the animals.

  97. But then the image is incomplete until Eve comes

  98. and man and woman together

  99. bearing the same image nature of God.

  100. We see the covenant Lord walking with his people

  101. and communicating directly with people, not to animals.

  102. So contrary to what our society is saying at the moment,

  103. we are not just advanced animals.

  104. We are uniquely made to be like God,

  105. to know God and to bring glory to God.

  106. It is an incredible privilege to be a human being.

  107. So what does it actually mean to be in the image

  108. and likeness of God?

  109. How are we different from animals?

  110. And at this point,

  111. you might have assumptions that you already know the answer,

  112. but just take a moment to check those assumptions

  113. because there's three traditional explanations

  114. in Christian writing and thought.

  115. What is clear from Scripture is that to be human

  116. is to be in the image of God.

  117. It's universal.

  118. It's not to say that someone is greater in the image

  119. or less in the image.

  120. It's universal.

  121. To be human is to be in the image of God.

  122. To be in the image of God is to be human.

  123. So that's got to be our reference point.

  124. So the first explanation is we're in the image of God

  125. because of some capacity within us as human beings.

  126. So some point to our mind.

  127. Yes, animals can think and be trained

  128. like rats can be trained to find explosives in the ground.

  129. That's pretty cool.

  130. But you don't see rats composing music.

  131. I haven't.

  132. You don't see dogs playing poker.

  133. I'm not advocating for poker, but anyway.

  134. You don't see monkeys debating philosophical questions.

  135. So some point to the mind.

  136. Because the mind enables us to know God in a way that animals don't,

  137. to speak and sing to God and hear him and understand him.

  138. So some point to our mind.

  139. Others point to our morality.

  140. We've got a moral nature.

  141. We are moral agents as we enter our world.

  142. We might try and suppress our conscience, but try as we might,

  143. we can't but relate to people and things and everything

  144. in a sense of right and wrong.

  145. Everyone has a deep desire for justice.

  146. And this capacity helps us know God's moral purity.

  147. He is holy.

  148. And it helps us to have real choice, eternally significant choices,

  149. where we can choose to obey God or disobey God.

  150. So some look at our moral and spiritual capacity.

  151. But to narrow the definition of image of God to our mind or our morality,

  152. something within us, there's problems with that.

  153. What becomes of a person's worth and purpose as a human being if they can show no capacity

  154. as an unborn baby in the womb or because they're mentally disabled?

  155. Whereas scripture says to be human is to be in the image of God.

  156. So there's problems with that view.

  157. Then you've got the second and the third definitions,

  158. and they're trying to move away from an internal capacity that we have.

  159. The second view is that we are relational beings.

  160. As we relate to God and as we relate to one another,

  161. that's how you see God.

  162. Relationships in action.

  163. And this has some backing from scripture, doesn't it?

  164. Like the two greatest commandments,

  165. love the Lord your God with all that you are

  166. and love your neighbours as yourself.

  167. You see God when you're relating.

  168. But then this one has a few problems as well.

  169. How can it be said of us before we knew the Lord,

  170. of unbelievers who don't want anything to do with the Lord

  171. or who worship a God of their own imagining and not the real Lord,

  172. how do they have a relationship with God?

  173. Wouldn't that mean they're not in the image of God

  174. if they're not relating to him?

  175. The other problem with this view is

  176. they try not to describe anything within human nature

  177. that says why can man have this relationship and not animals?

  178. So it just seems incomplete at least.

  179. The third view, if you're still with me,

  180. is that we image God as we rule over creation.

  181. Again, this has support from Genesis 1.

  182. The very next verse of being made in the image of God

  183. is God saying let them have dominion over the earth.

  184. But then what becomes of our image bearing in our old age

  185. when we can barely rule our own bodies,

  186. let alone contribute?

  187. And we need to be served.

  188. What happens then?

  189. Or I think another one I've heard is that

  190. Christians identify ruling the world,

  191. especially when we're being creative like the creator,

  192. when we're doing an artwork or we're solving some problem.

  193. But the problem with that is,

  194. does that mean you start being an image of God

  195. when you're doing something creative?

  196. What about the rest of the time?

  197. Have you stopped being the image of God?

  198. So let's just recap.

  199. There's three main views.

  200. One is some internal capacity,

  201. especially our mind and morality.

  202. The second view is relationships with God and one another.

  203. Third view is as we rule over the world in a meaningful way.

  204. I think the problem with all three of these,

  205. not that they're wrong in and of themselves,

  206. but they're just too narrow a definition.

  207. They're too incomplete.

  208. I think we're helped in Genesis 5, verses 1 to 3,

    Genesis 5:1–3

  209. where again Adam and Eve are said to be in the image

  210. and likeness of God.

  211. And then straight after that,

  212. we hear that Adam fathered a son in his own likeness

  213. after his image and named him Seth.

  214. In what way was Seth like his father Adam?

  215. Well, in every way that he was like his father

  216. and yet a distinct person.

  217. How do you define that?

  218. In what way are we like God?

  219. Well, in every way that we are like God,

  220. all his attributes that he has shared with us,

  221. we are like God.

  222. So how are we in the image of God?

  223. In every way that we are like God.

  224. And some of you are like, oh, thanks for that.

  225. That's such a broad definition.

  226. Is that really helpful?

  227. I think it is helpful because it's liberating,

  228. because it means you will continually be learning

  229. what it means to be in the image of God

  230. as you get to know God.

  231. It will take all of scripture and all of eternity

  232. to be learning what that means.

  233. I think it's liberating.

  234. And I think this father-child picture with Adam and Seth

  235. also helps us distinguish us from animals and angels.

  236. Yes, animals display something of the glory of God,

  237. but it's probably as different as a father loving a son

  238. compared to loving his pet dog.

  239. And there is a great difference.

  240. There is a world of difference.

  241. Or angels.

  242. Angels, Hebrews teaches us, are servants.

  243. They're very happy being servants.

  244. That's what they are.

  245. They're servants, whereas people are meant to be sons and daughters.

  246. So I think it helps in that regard too.

  247. So let's beware of identifying the value and purpose of human life

  248. to one narrow primary aspect.

  249. It is our moral and mental capacity.

  250. It is our relating.

  251. It is our ruling over the world.

  252. And it's in every other way that we are like the creator.

  253. To be in God's image is in every way we are like God.

  254. But before we get ahead of ourselves,

  255. we need to understand the purpose of an image.

  256. So yes, we are like God, but what's the purpose of an image?

  257. And this is where Gareth's kids talk has already probably said it better than I can.

  258. In ancient Israelite times, kings were spoken of as the image of the gods.

  259. They represented the authority and rule of the gods.

  260. They were the gods on the earth,

  261. which just tells us how radical this teaching was even in Moses' day.

  262. Not just kings, but the poor, uneducated, powerless nobody

  263. represents the king of kings.

  264. This is radical stuff.

  265. Or think of a statue of ancient idols, of gods.

  266. The physical statue represents the gods.

  267. Whereas scripture is saying God is represented at the moment in this earth

  268. with over 8 billion living, breathing statues walking around.

  269. The point of an image, you're probably not going to like this either,

  270. is the image.

  271. The point of an image is to reflect.

  272. Like a mirror reflecting the light of the sun into the world.

  273. People are to represent, to display, to reflect God to others and into the world.

  274. Not display his physical appearance because God is spirit,

  275. but display his character, display his purposes for life.

  276. His character should be our character.

  277. His purpose for life should be my purpose for life,

  278. our purpose in life.

  279. As we encounter another human being,

  280. we should see in them a beauty, a light,

  281. that isn't their own.

  282. It is God-like.

  283. And if people are representing the Lord,

  284. then how you treat people is an extension of how you treat the Lord.

  285. You can't separate the two.

  286. If you consider the parable of the sheep and the goats that Jesus told,

  287. how are we going to be judged at the end of time?

  288. Whether you close those who are deprived,

  289. whether you visit those who are sick and in prison,

  290. what you did or did not do to people,

  291. that's what you did to me, says the Lord,

  292. or didn't do for me.

  293. Because we all represent God,

  294. you can't separate relationship with God with how you treat people.

  295. The point of an image is to image, to reflect, to represent.

  296. So we are like God in every way that we are like him

  297. in order to display God to others

  298. so that people see God through us

  299. and rejoice in him and glorify him.

  300. And I think this is true as an individual,

  301. but I think Scripture talks about it's even more true.

  302. I don't know if more true.

  303. It's equally true as community.

  304. Israel was meant to be a light to the nations.

  305. The church is meant to be stars in this dark generation

  306. as we love one another, Philippians 2 says.

  307. So to be in the image of God is to be like God

  308. in every way that we are,

  309. like a child to a father,

  310. so that we reflect God and represent God to one another

  311. and into the world,

  312. so that others might see God through us

  313. and rejoice and give glory to God.

  314. So where do you see the glory of God?

  315. Well, because of sin,

  316. it's no longer in people.

  317. Has sin totally destroyed the image?

  318. Surprisingly, the answer is no.

  319. In Genesis 9,

  320. after the flood,

  321. sin is in the world.

  322. Sin is in the world still to the point

  323. where murder can occur

  324. and God institutes a punishment for murder.

  325. And the basis of the punishment

  326. is that people are in the image of God.

  327. Murder is going on

  328. and yet

  329. that kind of sinful person

  330. still bears the image of God.

  331. And then in James 3,

  332. we see

  333. you should not curse people,

  334. you should not tear down people

  335. with your words,

  336. with your lips.

  337. Why?

  338. Because they're in the image of God.

  339. So sin hasn't eradicated the image.

  340. All people,

  341. Christian,

  342. non-Christian,

  343. are in the image of God still.

  344. Like a mirror that's been dropped,

  345. it's been shattered,

  346. it is fragmented at best.

  347. I picture something like

  348. an abstract artwork

  349. of a portrait of a face

  350. where you're looking at it

  351. and you're just like,

  352. I think it's human.

  353. I'm not quite sure

  354. what the person looked like originally.

  355. This sinful condition

  356. is spoken of in Romans 1.

  357. The cause of our distortion of the image

  358. is because we've done a swap.

  359. We've done an exchange.

  360. Instead of the glory of the immortal God,

  361. we're going to worship

  362. and serve created things.

  363. We've done a swap.

  364. And the result is

  365. that all of our humanity

  366. is tainted,

  367. is disfigured.

  368. Our thinking is corrupted

  369. by falsehood.

  370. Our speech now projects

  371. gossip and slander

  372. and full of pride.

  373. And our relationships

  374. are marked by selfish ambition

  375. rather than self-sacrificial love.

  376. Our ruling of the world

  377. exploits rather than cultivates.

  378. I picture just what we might call

  379. an ordinary fight

  380. between two people,

  381. a verbal fight.

  382. Think of those arrows

  383. that we shoot at each other.

  384. Just an ordinary fight

  385. that we all do.

  386. Even in an everyday spat,

  387. you see something of the image

  388. because we can formulate ideas

  389. in our minds

  390. and project words to one another.

  391. There's something of an image there

  392. but then it's not light.

  393. It's characterised by darkness.

  394. It's not life-giving.

  395. It's trying to take life away.

  396. So something of the image

  397. is still there

  398. even as we try

  399. and tear each other down.

  400. And yet it's so disfigured.

  401. I think this sinful condition

  402. we've inherited from Adam and Eve

  403. is that we desire glory

  404. for ourselves,

  405. for our own sake,

  406. rather than loving the fact

  407. that we're reflecting God's glory.

  408. I think it's like as a statue,

  409. as a monument

  410. to the greatness of self

  411. rather than as a mirror

  412. that reflects the greatness

  413. of another.

  414. I think we try to be a statue

  415. to our own greatness.

  416. We want to be the picture

  417. of physical beauty.

  418. My value, my purpose

  419. is because I'm beautiful.

  420. Isn't he intelligent?

  421. We want people to think.

  422. She is a great mother.

  423. I'm so above my classmates.

  424. It's not funny.

  425. Isn't he powerful?

  426. People respect that.

  427. And it can take religious forms.

  428. Isn't he a wonderful preacher?

  429. Doesn't she pray well?

  430. Isn't he so compassionate

  431. and sacrificial?

  432. I think we share

  433. in Adam and Eve's desire

  434. to be a statue

  435. of our own greatness

  436. rather than reflecting

  437. the greatness of another.

  438. We exchange the glory

  439. of the immortal God

  440. for created things.

  441. We try and reach

  442. to the heavens ourselves,

  443. but all it does

  444. is make us more animal-like.

  445. So,

  446. with sin,

  447. the image hasn't been

  448. totally lost,

  449. but it is

  450. unrecognisable.

  451. It is so distorted.

  452. We reflect darkness

  453. more than light.

  454. So if we don't see

  455. God's glory

  456. in people anymore,

  457. where do we find it?

  458. Well,

  459. let's go to 2 Corinthians

  460. and we're going to stay there

  461. for the rest of the sermon.

  462. Here,

  463. Paul compares

  464. the glory

  465. that Moses

  466. saw.

  467. Now,

  468. Moses got to speak

  469. to God

  470. directly

  471. up on the mountain.

  472. and the glory

  473. that Moses

  474. saw

  475. as God

  476. revealed himself

  477. partially

  478. in the law,

  479. comparing that

  480. to the glory

  481. that the apostles

  482. saw

  483. and that we can see

  484. in the face

  485. of Jesus Christ.

  486. It's

  487. hardly

  488. worth comparing.

  489. So Exodus 34

  490. tells us

  491. of when Moses

  492. was out on

  493. Mount Sinai

  494. and he asked God,

  495. show me your glory

  496. and if you remember

  497. the story,

  498. God hides him

  499. in the rock

  500. and he passes by

  501. while declaring

  502. his name

  503. and Moses

  504. only sees

  505. the back

  506. of God,

  507. only sees

  508. his back

  509. and he is

  510. awe-inspiring

  511. and Moses

  512. didn't realise,

  513. he comes down

  514. from the mountain,

  515. he didn't realise

  516. that the reflected

  517. glory in his face

  518. was like blinding

  519. and people

  520. were afraid

  521. of him.

  522. He didn't even realise

  523. his face

  524. was shining

  525. he was glowing

  526. and so because

  527. people were afraid

  528. of him

  529. he put a cover

  530. he put a veil

  531. over his face.

  532. So the reflected

  533. glory that

  534. Moses had

  535. is nothing

  536. compared to

  537. what you and I

  538. can have today

  539. is Paul's point,

  540. nothing.

  541. It houses

  542. so much

  543. greater.

  544. It is a

  545. greater light

  546. it is more

  547. permanent.

  548. So without

  549. going into all

  550. the detail

  551. Paul is saying

  552. that having

  553. the spirit

  554. of God

  555. dwelling in us

  556. to show us

  557. Jesus

  558. is so much

  559. better

  560. than having

  561. the law

  562. because the law

  563. can only tell

  564. me how far

  565. short

  566. I've fallen

  567. from the glory

  568. of God.

  569. In the message

  570. about who

  571. Christ is

  572. and what

  573. he's done

  574. we don't see

  575. God's back

  576. we see his face.

  577. verse 4

  578. verse 6

  579. For God

  580. who said

  581. that light

  582. shine out

  583. of darkness

  584. has shone

  585. in our hearts

  586. to give

  587. the light

  588. of the

  589. knowledge

  590. of the

  591. glory of

  592. God

  593. in the

  594. face

  595. of Jesus

  596. Christ.

  597. If you want

  598. to see the

  599. beauty of

  600. the Lord

  601. you must

  602. look at

  603. his son

  604. Jesus

  605. Christ.

  606. He is

  607. what it

  608. means

  609. to be

  610. like God

  611. to be

  612. in the

  613. image of

  614. God.

  615. But can

  616. he really

  617. be that

  618. beautiful

  619. if so

  620. many people

  621. in our

  622. world

  623. don't see

  624. Jesus as

  625. glorious?

  626. Can he

  627. really be

  628. that good?

  629. Perhaps

  630. you've heard

  631. the story

  632. of Jesus

  633. many times

  634. yourself

  635. and you

  636. still

  637. maybe you're

  638. listening now

  639. and you're

  640. like

  641. yeah

  642. I can't

  643. wait till

  644. church is

  645. over

  646. I want

  647. to get

  648. on with

  649. life

  650. maybe you

  651. still haven't

  652. seen how

  653. appealing he

  654. is yet

  655. well verse

  656. four

  657. explains that

  658. and it's a

  659. warning to

  660. you

  661. the God

  662. of this

  663. world

  664. talking about

  665. Satan

  666. has blinded

  667. the minds

  668. of the

  669. unbelievers

  670. to keep

  671. them from

  672. seeing the

  673. light

  674. light

  675. of the

  676. gospel

  677. of the

  678. glory

  679. of Christ

  680. who is

  681. the image

  682. of God

  683. I like

  684. how John

  685. Calvin

  686. puts it

  687. the sun

  688. is no

  689. less bright

  690. because blind

  691. men do not

  692. perceive its

  693. light

  694. it's no

  695. less bright

  696. the God

  697. who made

  698. the sun

  699. to shine

  700. has to

  701. also give

  702. physical eyes

  703. to see it

  704. so too

  705. spiritually

  706. the sun

  707. of God

  708. is shining

  709. bright

  710. but if

  711. you're not

  712. seeing it

  713. that's not

  714. his problem

  715. that's my

  716. problem

  717. that's your

  718. problem

  719. you need

  720. spiritual

  721. eyes

  722. you think

  723. money

  724. and looks

  725. and intelligence

  726. and power

  727. is more

  728. beautiful than

  729. him

  730. you are

  731. blind

  732. and the

  733. religious

  734. types of

  735. Jesus day

  736. they saw

  737. him forgiving

  738. sinners

  739. the glory

  740. of God's

  741. grace

  742. and they

  743. hated it

  744. and they

  745. wanted the

  746. statue of

  747. their self

  748. righteousness

  749. to remain

  750. the thing

  751. that people

  752. worshipped

  753. and they

  754. were blind

  755. to their

  756. own need

  757. of forgiveness

  758. we all

  759. start in

  760. this condition

  761. of being

  762. blind

  763. to who

  764. Jesus

  765. is

  766. that he

  767. would lay

  768. down his

  769. life for

  770. us

  771. and if

  772. you can

  773. if you

  774. are a

  775. believer

  776. here this

  777. morning

  778. if you

  779. can see

  780. something

  781. of the

  782. glory

  783. of Jesus

  784. there's

  785. only one

  786. reason

  787. for that

  788. the God

  789. at creation

  790. who out of

  791. darkness

  792. said let

  793. there be

  794. light

  795. and there

  796. was light

  797. in your

  798. heart

  799. let there

  800. be light

  801. and the

  802. gospel

  803. broke

  804. through

  805. gave you

  806. eyes to

  807. see

  808. that's the

  809. only reason

  810. you're a

  811. Christian

  812. all praise

  813. to him

  814. that's how

  815. we were

  816. saved

  817. whether it

  818. was in a

  819. moment or

  820. over years

  821. took as

  822. creative an

  823. act at the

  824. beginning as

  825. in our

  826. salvation

  827. let there

  828. be light

  829. and gave us

  830. eyes to

  831. finally see

  832. well where

  833. do you see

  834. the glory

  835. of God

  836. you see in

  837. the face

  838. of the

  839. crucified

  840. and risen

  841. son of

  842. God

  843. and now

  844. by seeing

  845. Christ

  846. we who

  847. have had

  848. our eyes

  849. opened

  850. we are

  851. being

  852. increasingly

  853. transformed

  854. into his

  855. image

  856. verse

  857. 318

  858. and we

  859. all with

  860. unveiled

  861. face

  862. the

  863. blindness

  864. has been

  865. removed

  866. beholding the

  867. glory of

  868. glory of

  869. the Lord

  870. are being

  871. transformed

  872. into the

  873. same image

  874. for one

  875. degree of

  876. glory to

  877. another

  878. for this

  879. comes from

  880. the Lord

  881. who is

  882. the Spirit

  883. the Spirit's

  884. role

  885. we're told

  886. in John

  887. 16

  888. is to

  889. guide us

  890. into all

  891. truth

  892. he wants

  893. the spotlight

  894. to be on

  895. Jesus

  896. he wants

  897. the scriptures

  898. that the

  899. Spirit wrote

  900. about

  901. Jesus

  902. for us

  903. to understand

  904. them

  905. so that we

  906. see him

  907. in the

  908. scriptures

  909. and our

  910. hope is

  911. that while

  912. yes we

  913. are by

  914. degree

  915. growing in

  916. our knowledge

  917. of Jesus

  918. through the

  919. scriptures

  920. 1 Corinthians

  921. talks about

  922. that's still

  923. just a dim

  924. reflection of

  925. Jesus

  926. as good as

  927. the word of

  928. God is

  929. we're looking

  930. forward to

  931. when we see

  932. him face to

  933. face

  934. directly

  935. it says

  936. now I know

  937. in part

  938. then I

  939. shall know

  940. fully

  941. even as I

  942. have been

  943. fully known

  944. when we see

  945. him we will

  946. be totally

  947. like him

  948. but until

  949. then

  950. we should

  951. trust

  952. that we

  953. are being

  954. changed

  955. degree by

  956. degree

  957. into the

  958. likeness of

  959. Jesus

  960. as we

  961. behold him

  962. as we

  963. look to

  964. him

  965. there's no

  966. shortcut

  967. spiritual

  968. maturity

  969. you can't

  970. shortcut it

  971. you can't

  972. just get

  973. the

  974. supernatural

  975. gifts of

  976. the spirit

  977. and suddenly

  978. you're a

  979. mature

  980. Christian

  981. no

  982. spiritual

  983. maturity

  984. comes from

  985. growing in

  986. your knowledge

  987. of who

  988. Jesus is

  989. it's bit

  990. by bit

  991. what's the

  992. point of

  993. the image

  994. to image

  995. for others

  996. to see the

  997. glory of

  998. God through

  999. us

  1000. what a

  1001. privilege

  1002. what a

  1003. purpose

  1004. young or

  1005. old

  1006. we are to

  1007. display

  1008. in every

  1009. conversation

  1010. whatever

  1011. hardship

  1012. we're facing

  1013. at all

  1014. times

  1015. we have

  1016. the privilege

  1017. of displaying

  1018. the beauty

  1019. of God

  1020. so that

  1021. others

  1022. see him

  1023. that's an

  1024. amazing

  1025. purpose

  1026. even in

  1027. our

  1028. weak

  1029. attempts

  1030. at trying

  1031. to tell

  1032. other people

  1033. isn't

  1034. Jesus

  1035. great

  1036. the

  1037. sovereign

  1038. lord

  1039. can use

  1040. those

  1041. weak

  1042. words

  1043. to go

  1044. let there

  1045. be light

  1046. he can

  1047. use

  1048. us

  1049. as we

  1050. try and

  1051. make

  1052. clear

  1053. truths

  1054. about

  1055. Jesus

  1056. to

  1057. others

  1058. before

  1059. verse 7

  1060. we have

  1061. this

  1062. treasure

  1063. in jars

  1064. of clay

  1065. to show

  1066. that the

  1067. surpassing

  1068. power belongs

  1069. to God

  1070. and not

  1071. to us

  1072. I don't

  1073. know about

  1074. you but

  1075. I think we

  1076. can fall

  1077. into the

  1078. trap of

  1079. thinking

  1080. if I'm

  1081. really

  1082. advancing

  1083. in Christ's

  1084. glory as

  1085. an individual

  1086. or as a

  1087. church

  1088. then it's

  1089. going to

  1090. feel like

  1091. strength

  1092. it's going

  1093. to feel

  1094. like success

  1095. and victory

  1096. that I'm

  1097. going to

  1098. have persuasive

  1099. words that

  1100. come easily

  1101. and just

  1102. win my

  1103. family member

  1104. over to

  1105. know Christ

  1106. then and

  1107. there

  1108. that I'm

  1109. going to

  1110. totally get

  1111. rid of

  1112. the sin

  1113. the private

  1114. sins I'm

  1115. struggling

  1116. with totally

  1117. so that I'm

  1118. strong to do

  1119. great things

  1120. for God

  1121. that if

  1122. I remain

  1123. faithful to

  1124. Jesus people

  1125. will respect

  1126. that

  1127. but

  1128. that's not

  1129. the path

  1130. that Christ

  1131. walked

  1132. it's not

  1133. the path

  1134. the apostles

  1135. walked

  1136. it's not

  1137. the path

  1138. to glory

  1139. that we

  1140. walk

  1141. the path

  1142. is weakness

  1143. it is

  1144. rejection

  1145. it is

  1146. suffering

  1147. it is

  1148. struggling

  1149. why

  1150. well when

  1151. the world

  1152. what the

  1153. world counts

  1154. as glorious

  1155. is stripped

  1156. away

  1157. and yet

  1158. we have

  1159. a peace

  1160. and a hope

  1161. and a joy

  1162. and a love

  1163. for others

  1164. that still

  1165. remains

  1166. even though

  1167. other things

  1168. are gone

  1169. death is at

  1170. work in us

  1171. so that

  1172. the light

  1173. of Jesus

  1174. is more

  1175. clear

  1176. what a

  1177. wonderful

  1178. what a

  1179. wonderful

  1180. purpose

  1181. there's

  1182. not one

  1183. drop

  1184. of suffering

  1185. is wasted

  1186. the Lord

  1187. can use

  1188. that

  1189. for others

  1190. to see

  1191. the life

  1192. of Jesus

  1193. in us

  1194. for those

  1195. he plans

  1196. to open

  1197. eyes

  1198. so how

  1199. how will

  1200. people in

  1201. your family

  1202. in

  1203. your social

  1204. circles

  1205. how will

  1206. they see

  1207. the glory

  1208. of God

  1209. through you

  1210. as we

  1211. point to

  1212. Jesus

  1213. hear me

  1214. hear me

  1215. right

  1216. it's not

  1217. us we

  1218. proclaim

  1219. we proclaim

  1220. him as

  1221. Lord

  1222. how will

  1223. people in

  1224. this church

  1225. family see

  1226. the glory

  1227. of Christ

  1228. through you

  1229. as we

  1230. learn who

  1231. Jesus is

  1232. through the

  1233. scriptures

  1234. and through

  1235. how you

  1236. model him

  1237. but we'll

  1238. only do

  1239. this if we

  1240. keep our

  1241. eyes on

  1242. him

  1243. and learn

  1244. to love

  1245. him more

  1246. and more

  1247. and I

  1248. think it

  1249. will depend

  1250. on whose

  1251. glory we

  1252. want people

  1253. to see

  1254. whether we

  1255. want to be

  1256. a statue

  1257. to our

  1258. own glory

  1259. or whether

  1260. we want

  1261. people to

  1262. see through

  1263. us

  1264. to the

  1265. glory of

  1266. Jesus

  1267. let me

  1268. pray

  1269. so

  1270. sovereign

  1271. Lord

  1272. I want

  1273. to praise

  1274. you for

  1275. your mercy

  1276. to each

  1277. one of

  1278. us

  1279. that

  1280. you

  1281. have

  1282. given

  1283. us

  1284. eyes

  1285. to see

  1286. your

  1287. son

  1288. while we

  1289. were

  1290. chasing

  1291. after

  1292. our

  1293. own

  1294. glory

  1295. and

  1296. created

  1297. things

  1298. you

  1299. broke

  1300. in

  1301. and

  1302. showed

  1303. us

  1304. who

  1305. you

  1306. are

  1307. and

  1308. I

  1309. thank

  1310. you

  1311. for

  1312. that

  1313. and

  1314. I

  1315. thank
