  1. Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  2. But the serpent said to the woman,

  3. You will not surely die, for God knows that when you eat of it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.

  4. So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of it its fruit and ate.

  5. And she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate.

  6. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked.

  7. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

  8. Amen.

  9. Nice to have the key stop by Jan.

  10. I think many of us would be like Sarah.

  11. We think Sarah can be a wizard or a witch at times.

  12. They can cast spells and change things in the world or change things in our life.

  13. And I think that is a good start for the sermon.

  14. This is the picture of Paul with his big hammer.

  15. Before we start, shall we pray?

  16. Almighty God, we thank you for creating us and also making us the people who have desire.

  17. May you help us this morning as we consider your word and your world.

  18. May you sanctify our desires that we might seek first your kingdom and your righteousness in all that we do.

  19. Thank you, Lord.

  20. We pray in Jesus' name.

  21. Amen.

  22. I'll read to you a quote.

  23. God is dead.

  24. God remains dead.

  25. And we have killed him.

  26. How shall we comfort ourselves?

  27. The murderers of all murderers.

  28. What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet on has bled to death under our lives?

  29. Who will wipe this blood of us?

  30. What water is there for us to clean ourselves?

  31. What festivals of atonement?

  32. What sacred games shall we have to invent?

  33. Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us?

  34. Must we ourselves not become God simply to appear worthy of it?

  35. A famous writing by Friedrich Leacher around 1880.

  36. Friedrich Leacher was born in Germany.

  37. Some people consider him to be one of the greatest thinkers in the history of mankind.

  38. Could be not sure.

  39. But he only had a very short life.

  40. He died at 56.

  41. From 1844 to 1900.

  42. And the last 11 years of his life,

  43. he lived in a mental asylum.

  44. So he had a mental breakdown.

  45. So he lived only, basically he was productive until 45.

  46. But over all these years, he written many, many books.

  47. And they're all very high quality books.

  48. And he already was a great thinker.

  49. He knew Greek, Hebrew, not Latin, besides German.

  50. So you can imagine how intelligent he was.

  51. He became a professor at 24 years of age.

  52. But he only worked in the uni for about 10 years and he resigned.

  53. He couldn't work with all his colleagues.

  54. I think because his mind is so different to other people,

  55. he basically resigned.

  56. And also he didn't enjoy good health.

  57. And he moved to a quite faraway place.

  58. And they started writing books for about 10 years.

  59. He wrote all those books under the care of his mother and also his sister.

  60. He hated his mother and his sister, by the way.

  61. I suppose he just couldn't tolerate anyone who could not share his thoughts and his mind.

  62. He had four major principles for people to know.

  63. Okay.

  64. One, envy is good.

  65. Two, Christianity is bad.

  66. Three, alcohol is bad.

  67. And four, God is dead.

  68. So, I suppose it's unfair to summarize this for this.

  69. But if you want to know just briefly about this man.

  70. He considered Christianity and alcohol to be equally bad, in a sense.

  71. Because he drank, he drank alcohol.

  72. And his father was a priest.

  73. So he knew the Bible better than us, actually.

  74. He could use the Bible in the original language.

  75. And he also drank alcohol.

  76. And he got drunk.

  77. And after that, he realized that both Christianity and alcohol were equally bad.

  78. He thought that they both make people stupid and unproductive.

  79. And what Lucha hated the most about Christianity was the suppression of envy.

  80. So, envy is defined as the desire to get what someone else has.

  81. Well, I don't have.

  82. Somebody has.

  83. Christianity told people not to envy.

  84. And Lucha said, envy is good.

  85. So, if you envy your classmates' good exam results, you will work hard, wouldn't you, to get a better result next time.

  86. If you envy your friend's nice car, then you will work hard to get a better car.

  87. So, envy gives you the motive to work harder and to improve yourself.

  88. Envy also improves the economy.

  89. When everybody starts to spend more money to get what they envy, that will create more jobs and more tax for the government and more development.

  90. And that's true in one sense.

  91. And in writing God is dead.

  92. And in writing God is dead, Lucha was not mourning for the fact that nobody believed in God anymore.

  93. I mean, he's a thorough atheist.

  94. He was simply stating the fact that God was no longer relevant to the modern society.

  95. He wanted people to admit this fact that God was dead and to go on from there.

  96. He said, we do not want people to live illogically.

  97. I mean, at this time or even now, many people believe in God, but we don't live as if God matters anyway.

  98. So, for Lucha, why?

  99. I mean, why believe in God if you don't even actually live in God's ways?

  100. It's illogical.

  101. And he said, you just think that God is dead and go on from there and you'll be free.

  102. And you can rise up to decide what is good and what is evil yourself.

  103. And in his later years, Lucha realized that people do not necessarily follow the rules to get what they envy.

  104. So, if I envy your exam results, I do not necessarily need to work hard to get the result.

  105. I can cheat.

  106. Or I can do something to pull you down so that you don't get such a good result.

  107. So, if I envy your car, I don't necessarily need to work hard to get one myself.

  108. I can steal yours.

  109. Or I can cheat on my tax, return tax.

  110. So, I can't.

  111. So, he realized that people don't follow the rules necessary to get what they want.

  112. And we can also see that we have so many new laws, rules in the society because people are very smart.

  113. We always think of some way and some loopholes to get what we want.

  114. We don't usually necessarily to follow the rules of the government.

  115. We don't usually do the rules of the government.

  116. And then, who has the right to decide the rules anyway, to start with?

  117. And then, why should we all be the rules that are decided by people?

  118. So, that was what made Lucha thought the world needing some people or evolve into a better people.

  119. So, he called these people Superman.

  120. So, that's why he said, must we also not become God simply to appear worthy of it?

  121. So, he knew that if we get rid of the idea of God, we need something to replace that.

  122. You can't just without someone who is in charge.

  123. And so, he think about this idea of Superman.

  124. And so, these people would guard the world from the destructive behaviors of envy.

  125. So, our generation has the same longing, don't we?

  126. We see all these movies and games.

  127. We long for heroes or heroines who would maintain order and justice in the world.

  128. And all expressing all the movies and stories.

  129. So, we see in ourselves and the world around us the desire to be God or desire to be in charge.

  130. If there is a God, if there actually is a God, why would he create creatures who want to replace him in the first place?

  131. So, from Genesis, we knew that God created man in his own image.

  132. Humans can think, feel, and make decisions.

  133. Humans can love.

  134. And such a creature needs to have a will.

  135. Such a creature needs to have a sense of self.

  136. So, for me to be able to love, I need to have a sense of me as a person.

  137. Once I have a sense of me being a person, I can choose to love myself or love God or love others more.

  138. And we can see this in children as they grow up.

  139. When they are young, their sense of self is developing.

  140. And you can see that they could sing and dance before other people without feeling embarrassed.

  141. But as they get older, they start to feel embarrassed because they are self-conscious.

  142. And also, when they are young, they adore their parents.

  143. And as they become teenagers, they would feel that their parents are no longer relevant to their lives.

  144. So, the smarter the child, the sooner he will disobey his chief parents.

  145. A smart mind wants to be in charge.

  146. A smart mind wants to decide what is good and evil.

  147. It is easy to love God and obey God if loving God and obeying God makes us more successful in getting what we want.

  148. So, if I said, believe in Jesus and you will enjoy a good life, you have good health, and you will be wealthy.

  149. I suppose the church will be full of people.

  150. But such a love is not real love.

  151. And such an obedience is not real obedience.

  152. But if our being God leads us to lose, or leads to us losing an opportunity to be wealthier or happier,

  153. and if loving God leads to suffering, our love is then being tested.

  154. And will we still love ourselves more or love God more in that circumstances?

  155. So, God has created two smartest persons in the whole universe.

  156. Adam and Eve would be conscious of themselves as persons.

  157. They were the king and queen of the ancient world.

  158. They decided on the names of other creatures.

  159. They decided on the way to manage their environment.

  160. And there was one thing they were not to decide, at least not while they were still immature.

  161. The thing was, what was good and what was evil.

  162. God remained the one who decided on what was good and what was evil.

  163. Smart people do not like to be told what to do, as James said.

  164. They want to tell others what to do.

  165. And there was a chance that Adam and Eve would want to decide what was good and what was evil themselves.

  166. In Genesis 3.5, the servant said to Eve,

  167. Up to that point, Adam and Eve had only known God's goodness.

  168. They loved each other.

  169. They had purpose in life.

  170. They enjoyed their world.

  171. They had great relationship with God.

  172. I suppose they could still injure themselves while doing gardening.

  173. However, they had access to fruits which can restore their health.

  174. The only possible evil was eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

  175. They might not know why God would play such a trade amid the garden and forbade them from eating its fruit.

  176. But why would they want to eat that fruit anyway?

  177. There are plenty of other good fruits to choose from.

  178. God left one chance in the garden for Adam and Eve to disobey him.

  179. It did not cost Adam and Eve anything to obey God.

  180. In fact, God wanted them to eat from the trees whose fruits would keep them alive forever.

  181. There was one tree whose fruit would kill them.

  182. Does it take any intelligence to make the right choice?

  183. The fact is that it does not take much intelligence to obey,

  184. but it takes a lot of intelligence to disobey.

  185. The smarter a person is, the more likely he or she is going to disregard others.

  186. If you tell a child not to play with power outlets to avoid getting electrocuted,

  187. the chance is that this will stir a smart child to explore the power outlet.

  188. The child has not experienced a pain of electrocution before,

  189. neither has he seen someone getting electrocuted.

  190. He will downplay the warning.

  191. He also thinks he's smart enough to do what he likes.

  192. We all still do that.

  193. We downplay the adverse consequence of unhealthy lifestyles and unwise choices

  194. and think that we are smart enough to do whatever we like.

  195. For example, there are lots of information about the harmful effect of tobacco,

  196. but there are still young people wanting to try smoking cigarettes.

  197. And why don't our government ban the sale of tobacco?

  198. The government considers not only health issues,

  199. but they also need to take economy into account,

  200. human nature into account.

  201. And so, just like power outlets, even though it's dangerous,

  202. but we don't build a house without power outlets,

  203. because they have other purpose.

  204. So God's aim is more than simply avoiding sin and death.

  205. His aim is to have a people of his own,

  206. a people who will share his joy,

  207. a people who will love and obey him willingly.

  208. We may not understand what role the tree of knowledge of good and evil

  209. play in the bigger scheme of things,

  210. but we cannot say that because it was dangerous,

  211. God should not have put it in the garden.

  212. So the servant found a weak point in God's creation.

  213. Creating human in God's image,

  214. that is, human who are capable of love,

  215. is both the glory of God's creation,

  216. the pinnacle of God's creation,

  217. and the weakest aspect of his creation.

  218. We know that love can bring us great joy or great sorrow.

  219. Some of us have been hurt because we try to love someone,

  220. and we will not dare to love again.

  221. Love is God's love.

  222. And he created us in his image.

  223. The fact that we can love also means that we can choose to love ourselves more than loving God.

  224. The servant proceeded to redirect Eve's love towards herself.

  225. Look at the fruit.

  226. Doesn't it please your eyes?

  227. Go ahead and eat it.

  228. You will enjoy it,

  229. and you will become like God,

  230. knowing what is good and evil.

  231. Don't worry about death.

  232. I have not listened to God's orders.

  233. I am still alive.

  234. Just enjoy your life now.

  235. In the best way you can.

  236. Don't worry so much about the future.

  237. You will be right, mate.

  238. Eve started to think about herself.

  239. She wanted to improve herself,

  240. to make herself a superwoman.

  241. She disregarded God's order and added the fruit.

  242. Adam listened to his wife and added the fruit as well.

  243. After their acts of disobedience,

  244. they started to have guilt and shame.

  245. Before this, they knew what was good,

  246. but not what was evil.

  247. Their disobedience revealed to them what was evil.

  248. The seduction for them to disobey God was evil.

  249. Their action of disobedience to God was evil.

  250. Their thought of being independent of God

  251. and being in charge of evil.

  252. Did Adam and Eve really want to be God?

  253. Yes and no.

  254. Yes, in the sense that they wanted to take charge of their life.

  255. They wanted to decide what was good

  256. and what was evil for themselves.

  257. No, in the sense that they did not even know who God is,

  258. in the sense that they knew about God,

  259. but not fully what God was.

  260. They did not know God well enough to be God,

  261. in that sense.

  262. So you cannot become what you do not know.

  263. When we say we want to be God,

  264. what we mean is usually we want to be in charge.

  265. We want to decide for ourselves

  266. how we should live for our life.

  267. Richard's idea of having a group of supermen

  268. replacing the role of God

  269. was adopted by Adolf Hitler.

  270. Hitler thought he was one of those supermen.

  271. He decided what was good and evil

  272. not only for himself.

  273. For himself, he wanted to decide that for the world.

  274. He proceeded to modify the world.

  275. So his attempt, his failed attempt,

  276. he failed attempt to nurture a superior race

  277. and to eliminate inferior races.

  278. And his attempt led to untold suffering

  279. for the whole world.

  280. Despite failed attempts of emperors,

  281. presidents and individuals

  282. in the history of mankind,

  283. generation after generation

  284. still wants to be God.

  285. We can look at our own choices.

  286. How do we decide what is good

  287. or bad for ourselves?

  288. Does God have any say

  289. in our choices of spouses,

  290. our marriage,

  291. our careers,

  292. our purchases,

  293. our entertainments?

  294. Like Adam and Eve,

  295. we all want to decide

  296. what is good and evil for ourselves.

  297. We are quite stuck then.

  298. The Bible and the history

  299. tell us

  300. that people who choose to live

  301. who need to satisfy their own desires,

  302. people who choose to ignore God,

  303. will end in destruction.

  304. However,

  305. we can hardly help ourselves

  306. but to do things

  307. our own ways.

  308. For some of us,

  309. the destructive end

  310. may not be the worst thing.

  311. The worst thing is that

  312. we do not even enjoy being our own God.

  313. Do you think Adam and Eve

  314. enjoy eating the forbidden fruit?

  315. After eating the fruit,

  316. they were not filled with joy,

  317. but they were burdened

  318. with shame and guilt.

  319. I think that is the effect

  320. the servant would like to see.

  321. The devil delights in God's people

  322. being filled with shame and guilt.

  323. If we want to be God ourselves,

  324. we must kill God first.

  325. Otherwise,

  326. we will not have any enjoyment in life.

  327. If we say that we know God

  328. but live a life

  329. that have nothing much to do with God,

  330. then there will not be much joy

  331. and peace in our life.

  332. So do we have any hope

  333. of getting out of this?

  334. Yes, if we know what God is like.

  335. If God is like us,

  336. then we will have no hope.

  337. But God is not like us.

  338. So what did God do

  339. in response to our desire to kill Him?

  340. God became a man

  341. and lived among us?

  342. God did not become a superman.

  343. He became a lowly man.

  344. And it was a difficult life.

  345. Jesus did not have attractive appearance.

  346. He did not have wealth.

  347. He did not have position.

  348. He told people to repent.

  349. He told people to give up

  350. their own kingship

  351. because the kingdom of God

  352. was at hand.

  353. Most people ignore Him

  354. except those who

  355. came near Him for healing.

  356. Those in authority

  357. hated Him

  358. because Jesus did not

  359. follow their rules.

  360. Eventually,

  361. the rulers of the world

  362. killed Him

  363. with the support

  364. of most people.

  365. To the first Adam,

  366. sorry,

  367. for the first man Adam,

  368. obedience to God

  369. meant rest

  370. and life.

  371. Adam chose

  372. to disobey.

  373. To the second man,

  374. Jesus,

  375. obedience to God

  376. meant suffering and death.

  377. Jesus chose

  378. to obey.

  379. Adam chose

  380. to decide

  381. what was good

  382. and evil

  383. and resulted

  384. in death

  385. for himself

  386. and the world.

  387. Jesus chose

  388. to let God decide

  389. what was good

  390. and evil

  391. and resulted

  392. in resurrection

  393. for himself

  394. and those who trust Him.

  395. The servant

  396. wants to tend people

  397. to love themselves

  398. more than they love God.

  399. God lets it happen.

  400. As people

  401. love themselves

  402. more and more,

  403. they want to kill God

  404. and God lets it happen.

  405. But as Jesus

  406. died on the cross,

  407. God also provided

  408. a way for people

  409. to love Him again.

  410. We have betrayed

  411. God's love

  412. towards us

  413. when we listened

  414. to another voice

  415. and decided

  416. to be God

  417. ourselves.

  418. We can hear

  419. the servant

  420. laugh and say,

  421. and you have

  422. killed Him.

  423. How shall you

  424. comfort yourself,

  425. the murderers

  426. of all murderers?

  427. What was the holiest

  428. and mightiest

  429. of all

  430. that the world

  431. has yet on

  432. has bled

  433. to death

  434. under your life?

  435. Who will wipe

  436. this blood

  437. of you?

  438. What water

  439. is there

  440. for you

  441. to clean yourself?

  442. The servant

  443. was right.

  444. The best way

  445. for us

  446. to go forward

  447. is to forget

  448. what we have lost

  449. and enjoy

  450. what we still have.

  451. The servant

  452. is wrong as well.

  453. On the cross,

  454. Jesus provided

  455. the water

  456. that cleanses.

  457. God has shown

  458. His love to us

  459. in that while

  460. we want to kill Him,

  461. He sent His Son,

  462. Jesus Christ,

  463. to die for us.

  464. Smart people

  465. think they have

  466. managed to kill God.

  467. If you tell them

  468. that God redeemed us

  469. through this death,

  470. they will laugh

  471. at God's foolishness

  472. and weakness.

  473. But for those

  474. who have eyes

  475. to see

  476. and ears

  477. to hear,

  478. they will bow

  479. before the glory

  480. of God's grace.

  481. Knowing that

  482. our attempts

  483. to be God

  484. lead to

  485. miseries

  486. and destruction,

  487. knowing that

  488. God has come

  489. to redeem us

  490. from our folly,

  491. should we stop

  492. desiring to be God?

  493. We should stop

  494. our desire

  495. to be in charge,

  496. but we should

  497. indeed desire

  498. to be like God.

  499. God has done

  500. everything

  501. so that we

  502. can become

  503. conformed

  504. to the image

  505. of His Son,

  506. Jesus Christ.

  507. God wants us

  508. to be like Him,

  509. to be holy

  510. and kind.

  511. The more we are

  512. like Jesus,

  513. the more freedom

  514. we have.

  515. The more we are

  516. like Jesus,

  517. the less the things

  518. of the world

  519. trouble us.

  520. Even though

  521. Jesus was in

  522. the form of God,

  523. He did not count

  524. equality with God

  525. a thing to be grasped,

  526. but empty Himself

  527. by taking the form

  528. of a servant,

  529. being born

  530. in the likeness

  531. of man.

  532. Jesus' joy

  533. was in God

  534. the Father.

  535. He lived

  536. in joyful

  537. obedience

  538. to God.

  539. Jesus did not

  540. come primarily

  541. to solve

  542. any problem.

  543. He came in

  544. obedience to

  545. God the Father.

  546. Jesus did not

  547. come as a

  548. superman.

  549. He came to

  550. fulfill God's will.

  551. God the Father.

  552. Jesus lived

  553. in perfect rest

  554. regardless of

  555. His circumstances

  556. because He did

  557. not live for

  558. Himself.

  559. He did not

  560. need to be

  561. in charge.

  562. He did not

  563. need to heal

  564. all the sick

  565. people in the

  566. world.

  567. He did not

  568. need to solve

  569. all the problems

  570. in the world.

  571. His earthly

  572. life was not

  573. easy,

  574. but He remained

  575. restful because

  576. He knew that

  577. God was in

  578. charge.

  579. Do you know

  580. why the child

  581. went mad?

  582. I suspect

  583. that He was

  584. trying too hard

  585. trying to solve

  586. the problem

  587. of the world.

  588. Richard tried

  589. to be God

  590. himself.

  591. He tried to

  592. save the world.

  593. He told people

  594. what was good

  595. and what was

  596. evil.

  597. He had a

  598. mental broke

  599. down at 45

  600. when He was

  601. trying to save

  602. a horse from

  603. being frogged

  604. by His owner.

  605. He could not

  606. figure out

  607. why people

  608. would not

  609. listen to

  610. Him.

  611. People were

  612. still drinking

  613. alcohol and

  614. people were

  615. still following

  616. religion.

  617. What more

  618. can He do

  619. to end the

  620. stupidity

  621. around Him?

  622. He just

  623. could not.

  624. When He

  625. ignored God

  626. and tried to

  627. be God

  628. Himself,

  629. He had to

  630. go mad

  631. because He

  632. just didn't

  633. have anything

  634. in Him

  635. that even

  636. resembles God

  637. for Him

  638. to solve

  639. any problem.

  640. He had to

  641. be

  642. to

  643. desire to

  644. be in

  645. charge all

  646. the time.

  647. When things

  648. do not

  649. go as

  650. you expect,

  651. you will

  652. feel frustrated

  653. and anxious.

  654. Even

  655. as things

  656. do go as

  657. you expect,

  658. you will

  659. still worry

  660. about what

  661. else will

  662. go wrong.

  663. We can

  664. go through

  665. life worrying

  666. about many

  667. things.

  668. We worry

  669. about our

  670. families,

  671. we worry

  672. about our

  673. work,

  674. we worry

  675. about our

  676. health.

  677. if we

  678. can humble

  679. ourselves

  680. and go

  681. before Him,

  682. and if

  683. Richard would

  684. have done

  685. that,

  686. Richard's

  687. problem was

  688. God because

  689. he ignored

  690. Him and

  691. his

  692. thought also

  693. was also

  694. God,

  695. but he

  696. couldn't

  697. humble

  698. himself to

  699. accept that.

  700. But if we

  701. can humble

  702. ourselves and

  703. go to Him,

  704. we will have

  705. a new life

  706. because our

  707. old life

  708. will be

  709. dead in

  710. Christ.

  711. God

  712. will be

  713. free.

  714. And when we

  715. can give out our

  716. right to decide

  717. what is good and

  718. what is evil,

  719. then we will

  720. be free,

  721. and then we

  722. will share the

  723. joy of Jesus

  724. Christ.

  725. You may have

  726. disobeyed God

  727. too many times

  728. and think that

  729. there is no hope

  730. for you to

  731. change.

  732. Still come to

  733. Jesus.

  734. His mercy is

  735. more than all

  736. our sins.

  737. let us

  738. pray.

  739. Father, we

  740. thank you for

  741. giving us a

  742. great Savior.

  743. And we

  744. have hope

  745. because of

  746. who you

  747. are.

  748. And we

  749. want to

  750. adore you

  751. and honor

  752. you.

  753. Thank you,

  754. Lord.

  755. We pray in

  756. Jesus' name.

  757. Amen.
