  1. That was Ephesians 2 verse 11.

    Ephesians 2:11

  2. In Christ Jesus, you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

  3. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility,

  4. by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances,

  5. that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace,

  6. and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.

  7. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near.

  8. For through him we both have access in one spirit to the Father.

  9. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens,

  10. but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,

  11. built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,

  12. Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,

  13. in whom the whole structure, being joined together,

  14. grows into a holy temple in the Lord.

  15. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

  16. For this reason I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles,

  17. assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for you,

  18. how the mystery was made known to me by revelation,

  19. as I have written briefly.

  20. When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ,

  21. which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations,

  22. as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit.

  23. This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs,

  24. members of the same body and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

  25. Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God's grace,

  26. which was given me by the working of his power.

  27. To me, though I am the very least of all the saints,

  28. this grace was given to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ

  29. and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God,

  30. who created all things,

  31. so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known

  32. to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.

  33. This was according to the eternal purpose

  34. that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord,

  35. in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.

  36. Well, good morning, everyone.

  37. Why don't we pray as we come to God's word?

  38. Father, my simple prayer is that you would give us a vision of your church that you have.

  39. And I pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  40. Well, I don't think this is a profound statement,

  41. but we all crave connection, don't we?

  42. Studies have shown that a newborn child,

  43. deprived of all physical touch,

  44. have serious issues growing up,

  45. all physical touch.

  46. Solitary confinement in prison is one of the worst punishments

  47. you can inflict on a human being.

  48. And even that relational connection

  49. is one of the best ways to overcome addictions of various kinds.

  50. We all crave connection, community.

  51. But don't we try and do it on my terms?

  52. A child wants to be part of the family,

  53. but despises sharing the household chores

  54. or their parents saying no.

  55. We want the hospitals and the roads

  56. and the protection of police and the justice system,

  57. but we hate paying taxes.

  58. We want to be part of the sports team,

  59. but only when it's convenient for me.

  60. I even heard of a local amateur sports team

  61. where the coach paid the players to come to training.

  62. And as the season went on,

  63. they still didn't come.

  64. We want to be married.

  65. We want that deep intimacy and common purpose,

  66. but do we really want to submit all our choices to our spouse?

  67. And we just settle for transactional relating.

  68. I'll do this if you do that.

  69. You might want to fully belong to this church family,

  70. but if you only give yourself to others

  71. and what's going on here when it's convenient and safe

  72. and requiring little sacrifice,

  73. just don't be surprised if you don't feel very connected.

  74. But then we know from other cultures and from history

  75. that the antidote to that isn't to elevate the group,

  76. the family, the nation, the church,

  77. as supreme to the point where the individual is lost altogether.

  78. It gives all the power to those in charge

  79. where the individual life can become very, very cheap.

  80. And it can create division between groups,

  81. between families, between tribes and nations

  82. that the bloodshed in history shows us

  83. that that doesn't work either.

  84. So I think we're kind of stuck.

  85. We crave connection as human beings

  86. and we try and have it on our own terms,

  87. but it doesn't work.

  88. It keeps us at arm's length self-protection

  89. and unity that lasts is almost impossible to maintain.

  90. We saw in Genesis, before the fall,

  91. before sin entered the world,

  92. how central in God's purposes that God wants a people.

  93. We hear it in the command to fill the earth with his people.

  94. We hear the Lord's surprising declaration to Adam,

  95. who is in paradise, relating to the Lord,

  96. it's not good to be alone.

  97. He needs someone of the same flesh,

  98. the same nature to relate to.

  99. We have here not only the commencement of marriage,

  100. but the start of the human race under Adam and Eve.

  101. What should have spread was Adam's family

  102. ever increasing and worshipping the Lord

  103. without any shame, only blessing.

  104. So as we come to the end of our sermon series,

  105. we've covered a lot of ground, haven't we?

  106. We've gone on so many topics.

  107. But it would be incomplete and it would be tragically distorted

  108. if we viewed everything we've covered so far,

  109. if we viewed it individualistically.

  110. So if we think of the Christian hope of heaven

  111. as simply me being resurrected so that I can see the Lord face to face,

  112. now that's true and it's wonderful,

  113. but it's incomplete.

  114. If we understand that the Lord is personal

  115. and he speaks through his word to me,

  116. I can know him through his word.

  117. That's true, but it's not complete.

  118. The sovereign creator is still sovereign

  119. and he's working all things for my good

  120. to conform me to the likeness of his son.

  121. That's true, but he's got a bigger goal than that.

  122. That I can know the triune creator,

  123. God as father, because I belong to the son

  124. filled with his spirit.

  125. Again, individualistically, that's true,

  126. but it's more than that.

  127. That I'm made for worship, to love, trust and obey God,

  128. build my life on God, not some created thing.

  129. That sin is trying to be in control

  130. when really God is the one who should be in control.

  131. That I'm made in the likeness of God,

  132. to be like God, to reflect the glory of God

  133. as I go about in the world.

  134. All these things, individualistically, is true,

  135. but it's incomplete.

  136. It's not God's picture.

  137. Of what he intended creation to be,

  138. not the full picture.

  139. Because we see in Genesis that God's goal is rest

  140. and at the heart of rest is God dwelling with

  141. his worshipping people.

  142. One way to understand the story of scripture

  143. is to look at it through the theme of

  144. two competing, two alternatives to community.

  145. One is a man-made community with man at the centre

  146. and the other is a God-made community

  147. with God at the centre.

  148. So we see this at the end of scripture in Revelation

  149. where you've got the city of Babylon,

  150. man-made, living life for self,

  151. but it comes to an end.

  152. What city lasts?

  153. God's city.

  154. But we see this theme starting off in Genesis.

  155. We come to it in Genesis 11

  156. where we've got the Tower of Babel.

  157. And here at the Tower of Babel,

  158. you've got people sinfully trying to go,

  159. let us make a name for ourselves.

  160. Now what are they trying to do?

  161. They're trying to build a kingdom without the king.

  162. Let us make a name not for God but for ourselves.

  163. Let's build a society where we've got security,

  164. where we've got our own purpose,

  165. where we're going to get all the acclaim ourselves,

  166. where we're going to guarantee our future.

  167. It's trying to build a kingdom just without the king.

  168. So that's one option.

  169. And we've been trying ever since.

  170. Building community without God at the centre.

  171. But then in Genesis 12,

  172. God steps in, calls Abraham out,

  173. and he starts his program

  174. to build a people for himself.

  175. So the rest of the Old Testament

  176. zooms in on Abraham's descendants,

  177. the nation of Israel.

  178. But in the end,

  179. even this privileged nation

  180. who had God speaking to them,

  181. all the privileges in the world,

  182. even they,

  183. instead of being a light to the nations

  184. to draw them in,

  185. they end up becoming like the nations.

  186. So we can see there's two communities,

  187. two alternatives.

  188. One is man-made,

  189. God-made.

  190. One is man-centred.

  191. One is God-centred.

  192. So if the nation of Israel didn't work,

  193. does that mean that God's desire for a people

  194. failed?

  195. Did it fail?

  196. And here we come to Ephesians.

  197. I think Ephesians says it most explicitly and clearly,

  198. which is why we're going to look at it today.

  199. Here we have in Ephesians 3,

  200. so open your Bibles to Ephesians 3,

  201. we'll be spending our time here,

  202. 2 and 3.

  203. In Ephesians 3,

  204. we're told that God has had

  205. a greater plan

  206. than just national Israel,

  207. that he is moving all history

  208. towards this goal.

  209. Paul says that God,

  210. the creator of all things,

  211. had an eternal purpose in mind,

  212. an everlasting goal in mind,

  213. but that God had kept it a mystery.

  214. Now, that word mystery

  215. doesn't mean it's totally unknowable.

  216. It doesn't mean it's like a murder mystery,

  217. where if you just picked the right pieces,

  218. you could have worked it out yourself.

  219. It's more like MasterChef,

  220. where you've got the mystery box.

  221. You don't know what's under that mystery box

  222. until the lid is lifted.

  223. It's real.

  224. It's just hidden.

  225. So God

  226. had a plan

  227. from the start,

  228. and he gave himself testimony

  229. throughout the Old Testament,

  230. so it's not like this came out of nowhere,

  231. but he has lifted the lid,

  232. Paul is saying.

  233. He has revealed it

  234. to the apostles and prophets.

  235. What could be so important

  236. to the creator,

  237. the climactic purpose of history,

  238. this mystery

  239. that he's now revealed,

  240. this mystery is so profound

  241. that when angels

  242. and heavenly realities

  243. look at it,

  244. they are in amazement.

  245. Now,

  246. either I'm not saying this properly,

  247. which is possible,

  248. or you're asleep,

  249. or you're addicted

  250. to your smartphone,

  251. something chronic,

  252. or you are so confident

  253. in your own purpose to life

  254. that you don't care

  255. what the creator's is.

  256. I mean,

  257. like the creator of the world

  258. has a mystery

  259. and he's revealed it.

  260. What is it?

  261. Verse 6,

  262. this mystery

  263. is that the nations,

  264. the Gentiles,

  265. that's you if you're not a Jew,

  266. that's me,

  267. our fellow heirs,

  268. members of the same body,

  269. partakers of the promise

  270. in Christ Jesus

  271. through the gospel.

  272. Verse 9 tells us

  273. the purpose in all this,

  274. to bring to light

  275. for everyone

  276. what is the plan

  277. of the mystery

  278. hidden for ages

  279. in God

  280. who created all things

  281. so that through the church,

  282. the church,

  283. the manifold wisdom

  284. of God

  285. might now be made known

  286. to the rulers

  287. and authorities

  288. in the heavenly places.

  289. God lifts the lid

  290. of his eternal plan

  291. to the apostles,

  292. they preach it

  293. through the gospel message

  294. throughout the world

  295. and the society

  296. that this gospel creates,

  297. heavenly realities

  298. are looking at the society

  299. and going,

  300. wow,

  301. God is incredible.

  302. The world might see

  303. the church as outdated

  304. and irrelevant,

  305. a weird bunch of people,

  306. sorry,

  307. who need a crutch

  308. to get through life,

  309. maybe even bigoted,

  310. intolerant,

  311. dangerous.

  312. The world might see

  313. the church that way.

  314. You might see it

  315. as useful at times.

  316. Surround your kids

  317. with other moral kids,

  318. the occasional uplifting sermon,

  319. a bit of relationship.

  320. Maybe a necessary duty.

  321. God sees it

  322. as the climax

  323. of his created purposes.

  324. He sees his unified church

  325. as central

  326. to his eternal purpose

  327. because it's through

  328. the unified church

  329. that the Lord is glorified.

  330. How is the Lord glorified

  331. in the church?

  332. sin has alienated us

  333. from God.

  334. We hear that regularly

  335. but it's also alienated us

  336. from one another.

  337. Sin has created hostility

  338. between us and God

  339. but it's also created hostility

  340. between one another.

  341. And in the church,

  342. Christ has achieved

  343. a double reconciliation.

  344. Here in the second half

  345. of Ephesians 2,

  346. the focus is on

  347. the divide between Jew

  348. and Gentile

  349. which I'm taking this

  350. as a greater

  351. to lesser point.

  352. This is the greatest divide

  353. there is between societies,

  354. the chosen people of God

  355. and everyone else.

  356. if this war can be broken down,

  357. any war can be broken down.

  358. I think we need to remember

  359. and I don't think this,

  360. Ephesians 2,

  361. Ephesians 2,

  362. God says that we need to remember,

  363. verse 11,

  364. at one time

  365. what our condition was.

  366. We need to remember

  367. what our condition was

  368. so that we can marvel

  369. at his grace.

  370. We live in a time

  371. when personal choice

  372. is just

  373. all that matters basically.

  374. Like, yeah,

  375. of course I can belong

  376. to the church

  377. if I want to.

  378. Yes, you can walk

  379. in these doors

  380. and attend

  381. but

  382. you

  383. had no right

  384. and me,

  385. you had no right

  386. to belong

  387. to God's spiritual

  388. heavenly church

  389. based on your choice.

  390. Before we came

  391. to Christ in faith,

  392. our spiritual condition

  393. was utterly hopeless,

  394. we're told.

  395. We were separated

  396. from Christ,

  397. we were alienated

  398. from Israel,

  399. we were tourists,

  400. we had no rights,

  401. got all God's promises

  402. to Israel,

  403. not for you.

  404. No promises to you.

  405. We were hopeless,

  406. and we were without God,

  407. we had no true knowledge

  408. of God

  409. and if we don't have God,

  410. what do we really have?

  411. Nothing in the end.

  412. I think our far away condition

  413. is pictured in the temple,

  414. the physical temple

  415. that existed

  416. when Paul was writing this

  417. in Jerusalem.

  418. So,

  419. you want to be close to God,

  420. his name dwelling

  421. in the temple?

  422. Well,

  423. you've got,

  424. first of all,

  425. you've got the inner

  426. court for the priests

  427. who were serving

  428. and then you've got

  429. another area after that

  430. for the men of Israel

  431. and then another area

  432. for the women of Israel

  433. and then you went down

  434. a bunch of steps

  435. and behind a thick wall

  436. and then everyone else,

  437. if you're not a Jew,

  438. you can go there.

  439. And there was a sign

  440. which basically said,

  441. you cross this wall,

  442. your death is on your hands.

  443. I think that just gives us

  444. a taste of spiritually

  445. how far we were

  446. from God

  447. before we knew Christ.

  448. That's not saying

  449. that Jews didn't need

  450. the gospel.

  451. The gospel was preached

  452. to them who were near.

  453. They had every privilege.

  454. They still needed

  455. their sins forgiven.

  456. But we were

  457. a long,

  458. long way off.

  459. Verse 13,

  460. but now,

  461. God has acted

  462. to change all that.

  463. But now,

  464. in Christ Jesus,

  465. you who once

  466. were far off

  467. have been brought near

  468. by the blood

  469. of Christ.

  470. Christ,

  471. in his flesh,

  472. has broken down

  473. every dividing wall

  474. of hostility

  475. between people.

  476. Verse 18

  477. is the climax.

  478. For through him,

  479. through Christ,

  480. we both,

  481. Jew and Gentile,

  482. every person

  483. with faith,

  484. through him,

  485. we both have access

  486. in one spirit

  487. to the Father.

  488. That's the kind

  489. of God he is.

  490. He wants us

  491. to have full access

  492. and he's now

  493. created that

  494. in Jesus.

  495. He's broken

  496. down the law

  497. that keeping

  498. the law

  499. produces

  500. self-righteousness

  501. and condemns

  502. anyone who's

  503. not keeping

  504. the law.

  505. Jew and Gentile

  506. all come in

  507. on the basis

  508. of faith,

  509. all come in

  510. on the basis

  511. of grace.

  512. It is by his

  513. death we are

  514. all forgiven.

  515. It is by being

  516. united to him

  517. that we all

  518. live.

  519. God was

  520. rightfully

  521. wrathful

  522. toward our

  523. rebellion

  524. and we hated

  525. his claim

  526. to rule over

  527. our lives.

  528. But Jesus

  529. kills,

  530. I love the

  531. wording,

  532. he kills

  533. the hostility.

  534. He murdered

  535. the hostility

  536. by himself

  537. being murdered.

  538. that sin

  539. that produced

  540. the wrath

  541. at us

  542. is gone.

  543. And now

  544. when we look

  545. at God

  546. we don't

  547. see a

  548. condemning

  549. judge

  550. that we

  551. actually

  552. hate

  553. and we

  554. don't want

  555. him to

  556. control

  557. our lives.

  558. We go,

  559. wow,

  560. if you

  561. are this

  562. loving,

  563. go ahead,

  564. control my

  565. life.

  566. He kills

  567. the hostility

  568. between man

  569. and God

  570. and God.

  571. But he

  572. also breaks

  573. down the

  574. wall of

  575. hostility

  576. between people

  577. and people,

  578. Jew and

  579. Gentile.

  580. God

  581. because it's

  582. by grace

  583. alone that

  584. we belong

  585. to God,

  586. that we

  587. are near

  588. to God.

  589. There is

  590. no separation

  591. between people.

  592. I thought

  593. of the

  594. story of

  595. Jim Elliott,

  596. a missionary,

  597. and four

  598. others who

  599. were killed

  600. when they

  601. tried to

  602. take the

  603. gospel to

  604. Ecuador,

  605. to a

  606. tribe in

  607. Ecuador.

  608. You might

  609. have heard

  610. this story

  611. before.

  612. One of the

  613. guys who

  614. was killed

  615. along with

  616. Jim Elliott

  617. was Nate

  618. Saint.

  619. So when

  620. they arrived,

  621. the tribe

  622. speared these

  623. men to

  624. death.

  625. They didn't

  626. have a chance

  627. to speak

  628. the gospel.

  629. Now,

  630. why,

  631. like,

  632. I saw

  633. pictures of

  634. them as I

  635. was preparing

  636. this and

  637. they're in

  638. their 30s,

  639. young and

  640. married,

  641. got young

  642. children.

  643. Why they

  644. took this

  645. risk in the

  646. first place

  647. is pretty

  648. astonishing.

  649. But even

  650. more incredible

  651. than their

  652. sacrifice for

  653. the gospel

  654. is that

  655. eventually the

  656. tribe did

  657. welcome the

  658. wives,

  659. the bereaved

  660. wives in,

  661. and the

  662. gospel went

  663. to this

  664. tribe.

  665. And Steve

  666. Saint, who

  667. was only five

  668. years old,

  669. he grew up

  670. in this

  671. tribe,

  672. and he

  673. befriended

  674. the men

  675. who murdered

  676. his dad,

  677. and he

  678. was,

  679. sorry,

  680. he was

  681. baptized by

  682. them,

  683. and embraced

  684. as a son in

  685. the tribe.

  686. Like, what is

  687. that?

  688. What is that?

  689. That you can

  690. genuinely love

  691. the people who

  692. murdered your

  693. dad?

  694. Like, what

  695. is that?

  696. That's the

  697. church.

  698. That's what

  699. Christ has

  700. done.

  701. This wasn't

  702. faking.

  703. This is

  704. real peace.

  705. Christ

  706. didn't die

  707. to merely

  708. create an

  709. institution

  710. or social

  711. movement.

  712. A key

  713. phrase is in

  714. verse 16.

  715. So that

  716. he might,

  717. the second

  718. half of

  719. 16,

  720. that he

  721. might create

  722. in himself

  723. one new

  724. man in

  725. place of

  726. the two,

  727. so making

  728. peace.

  729. Now,

  730. notice that

  731. isn't plural.

  732. Yes,

  733. when we come

  734. to Christ,

  735. we are made

  736. new, we

  737. are born

  738. again, but

  739. this is

  740. singular.

  741. This is

  742. talking about

  743. the church,

  744. picturing the

  745. church as a

  746. whole, the

  747. spiritual

  748. church.

  749. Christ has

  750. one new

  751. man.

  752. What it's

  753. saying is

  754. Christ has

  755. created a

  756. new humanity.

  757. It's not

  758. just an

  759. institution,

  760. it's not

  761. just a

  762. movement,

  763. it's a

  764. new human

  765. race.

  766. One

  767. flesh,

  768. his flesh,

  769. his body.

  770. So just

  771. reflect, do

  772. you see the

  773. church that

  774. way?

  775. Do you

  776. see the

  777. church as

  778. just a

  779. local community

  780. that help

  781. one another

  782. out?

  783. Or do you

  784. see the

  785. church as a

  786. new human

  787. race?

  788. Now, I'm

  789. mindful that

  790. that phrasing

  791. sounds pretty

  792. arrogant.

  793. It almost

  794. sounds like

  795. superior race

  796. kind of

  797. language, but

  798. this race is

  799. created and

  800. motivated by

  801. grace.

  802. It's knowing

  803. how much we

  804. don't deserve

  805. it.

  806. And it's

  807. animated by

  808. his spirit,

  809. the same

  810. spirit who

  811. chose to be

  812. killed to

  813. make peace.

  814. I don't

  815. think it

  816. creates

  817. superiority.

  818. I think it

  819. creates,

  820. well, I

  821. feel like

  822. Jim Elliot

  823. and Nate

  824. saying,

  825. a new

  826. humanity.

  827. And then

  828. we're given

  829. three pictures

  830. of what this

  831. unity looks

  832. like.

  833. The first

  834. one is we

  835. are fellow

  836. citizens of

  837. the kingdom.

  838. There's no

  839. need to have

  840. an imposter

  841. syndrome in the

  842. church if

  843. you're riddled

  844. with sin and

  845. shame.

  846. If you're

  847. filled with

  848. sin and

  849. shame, you

  850. may not

  851. feel like

  852. you belong

  853. here right

  854. now.

  855. We can even

  856. feel like

  857. that when

  858. we're

  859. underdressed

  860. and things

  861. like that.

  862. We don't

  863. need to feel

  864. that way.

  865. You are

  866. full citizens

  867. of the

  868. kingdom by

  869. faith in

  870. Christ.

  871. You're not

  872. an outsider.

  873. You're not

  874. even a

  875. permanent

  876. resident.

  877. You're a

  878. full citizen.

  879. The second

  880. picture adds

  881. a more intimate

  882. note.

  883. We are

  884. members of

  885. his

  886. household.

  887. We have

  888. one father.

  889. We're in

  890. the true

  891. royal family.

  892. I don't

  893. think this is

  894. sentimental

  895. language like

  896. our workplaces

  897. want to talk

  898. about our

  899. work family.

  900. They just want

  901. you to do

  902. your job

  903. properly.

  904. That's just

  905. sentimental

  906. language I

  907. think.

  908. This blood

  909. that runs

  910. through this

  911. family is

  912. more precious

  913. than any

  914. human blood.

  915. You better

  916. get used to

  917. the people

  918. sitting around

  919. you.

  920. You're going

  921. to be with

  922. them for a

  923. very, very

  924. long time.

  925. But I

  926. also want to

  927. be real about

  928. it.

  929. We have

  930. serious

  931. differences

  932. in this

  933. room.

  934. I heard

  935. someone

  936. describe it

  937. as we

  938. don't look

  939. at each

  940. other and

  941. go,

  942. wow, I

  943. just feel

  944. so much

  945. affection for

  946. you.

  947. We look

  948. at each

  949. other and

  950. go,

  951. I'm

  952. surprised

  953. you're in

  954. the family

  955. of God.

  956. Now, there's

  957. something wrong

  958. about that

  959. joke too,

  960. but there

  961. are serious

  962. differences.

  963. Let's not

  964. downplay those,

  965. but I

  966. think the

  967. beauty of

  968. Christ is

  969. seen when

  970. despite all

  971. those differences

  972. we can

  973. unite in

  974. worship in

  975. the same

  976. Christ.

  977. When we

  978. genuinely

  979. display brotherly

  980. love,

  981. despite those

  982. differences,

  983. differences,

  984. that's when

  985. the wisdom

  986. of the

  987. cross is

  988. displayed in

  989. all its

  990. fullness.

  991. So we

  992. are full

  993. citizens of

  994. the kingdom.

  995. There is a

  996. brotherhood

  997. united in

  998. sacrificial love

  999. for one

  1000. another.

  1001. And the

  1002. third picture

  1003. is that of

  1004. the temple.

  1005. God has

  1006. this grand

  1007. building project.

  1008. He's building

  1009. his home to

  1010. live in.

  1011. This living

  1012. temple isn't

  1013. about your

  1014. body being

  1015. the picture of

  1016. health.

  1017. It's about

  1018. relationships in

  1019. the church

  1020. are meant to

  1021. be the

  1022. picture of

  1023. health.

  1024. And Christ

  1025. underpins this

  1026. structure.

  1027. He is the

  1028. cornerstone.

  1029. We are built

  1030. on him.

  1031. What governs

  1032. our church is

  1033. his word through

  1034. the apostles and

  1035. prophets.

  1036. It's not what

  1037. you think.

  1038. It's not what

  1039. I think.

  1040. But we sit

  1041. under the

  1042. authority of

  1043. his word.

  1044. That's how we

  1045. are built up.

  1046. And it's a

  1047. permanent

  1048. building.

  1049. The world

  1050. is busy

  1051. creating

  1052. organizations.

  1053. The average

  1054. organization I

  1055. heard the

  1056. other day

  1057. lasts for

  1058. 30 to 40

  1059. years, the

  1060. average

  1061. business.

  1062. Everything the

  1063. world is trying

  1064. to build will

  1065. collapse.

  1066. But this

  1067. building project

  1068. is permanent

  1069. because Christ

  1070. has risen.

  1071. It's in

  1072. him.

  1073. It's built

  1074. on him.

  1075. His temple

  1076. is forever.

  1077. So all

  1078. these pictures

  1079. of the new

  1080. humanity that

  1081. Christ has

  1082. created, full

  1083. citizens, members

  1084. of one family, a

  1085. living temple for

  1086. God to dwell in.

  1087. I think it

  1088. tells us something

  1089. about the nature

  1090. of God, what

  1091. he's like.

  1092. God is a

  1093. uniting God.

  1094. He's an

  1095. in-gathering

  1096. God.

  1097. He's a

  1098. peace-loving

  1099. God.

  1100. So I'm

  1101. hesitant to

  1102. say the

  1103. next line.

  1104. It's almost

  1105. blasphemous, but

  1106. I don't think it

  1107. is.

  1108. God doesn't

  1109. want to think

  1110. of himself

  1111. apart from

  1112. his people

  1113. is the

  1114. import I'm

  1115. getting from

  1116. this.

  1117. He wants

  1118. to dwell in

  1119. his people.

  1120. Christ wants

  1121. to be the

  1122. head of his

  1123. body, the

  1124. church.

  1125. He wants

  1126. to be united

  1127. more than a

  1128. husband and

  1129. wife is

  1130. united.

  1131. God is a

  1132. uniting God

  1133. between God

  1134. and man,

  1135. between man

  1136. and man,

  1137. and heaven

  1138. and earth.

  1139. That's his

  1140. goal.

  1141. United in

  1142. the love of

  1143. Christ, God

  1144. is glorified in

  1145. his united

  1146. church.

  1147. So if

  1148. God's plan

  1149. since creation

  1150. has now

  1151. been revealed

  1152. to be the

  1153. unity of

  1154. his church,

  1155. and if

  1156. Christ gave

  1157. his blood

  1158. to create a

  1159. new and

  1160. eternal

  1161. people for

  1162. God, how

  1163. can we

  1164. approach

  1165. church from

  1166. our own

  1167. self-interest?

  1168. It's not

  1169. what we're

  1170. called to,

  1171. it's not who

  1172. we are, and

  1173. it's not what

  1174. we're called

  1175. to.

  1176. The glory

  1177. of God is

  1178. seen in

  1179. individuals being

  1180. saved, but

  1181. that's not the

  1182. end of the

  1183. story.

  1184. We have a

  1185. high calling

  1186. to be the

  1187. church, the

  1188. resurrected new

  1189. community.

  1190. We're meant to

  1191. be showing the

  1192. world a

  1193. different way.

  1194. We are

  1195. called to

  1196. display to

  1197. the heavens,

  1198. whoever they

  1199. are watching,

  1200. the glory of

  1201. God.

  1202. what an

  1203. incredible

  1204. purpose.

  1205. Imagine the

  1206. difference it

  1207. would make

  1208. if we didn't

  1209. approach church

  1210. according to

  1211. what I got

  1212. out of it,

  1213. but if we

  1214. saw the

  1215. church as

  1216. what we

  1217. are.

  1218. We are

  1219. his body,

  1220. we are

  1221. his kingdom,

  1222. we are

  1223. his new

  1224. humanity,

  1225. we are

  1226. one family.

  1227. Imagine if

  1228. we thought of

  1229. ourselves that

  1230. way.

  1231. go away

  1232. however the

  1233. spirit is

  1234. convicting.

  1235. Let's think

  1236. about that.

  1237. None of us

  1238. view the

  1239. church fully

  1240. as we

  1241. ought to,

  1242. as God

  1243. does.

  1244. We've all

  1245. got to

  1246. grow in

  1247. this area.

  1248. As our

  1249. society tries

  1250. to define

  1251. itself more

  1252. and more

  1253. by what an

  1254. individual does,

  1255. we can show

  1256. a better

  1257. way.

  1258. We can

  1259. be so

  1260. secure in

  1261. ourselves

  1262. because we

  1263. know who

  1264. we are.

  1265. I don't

  1266. have to

  1267. prove who

  1268. I am,

  1269. I don't

  1270. have to

  1271. find who

  1272. I am,

  1273. I know

  1274. who I

  1275. am,

  1276. I am

  1277. his

  1278. church,

  1279. I belong

  1280. to him.

  1281. As our

  1282. society

  1283. increasingly

  1284. mistrusts

  1285. authority,

  1286. anyone in

  1287. authority because

  1288. it threatens

  1289. personal

  1290. choice,

  1291. we need

  1292. to focus

  1293. on being

  1294. the church

  1295. to show

  1296. a better

  1297. way.

  1298. If we

  1299. see the

  1300. unity of

  1301. the church

  1302. that those

  1303. who are

  1304. given

  1305. authority are

  1306. to use

  1307. it like

  1308. serving another

  1309. member in

  1310. the body,

  1311. just wanting

  1312. the one

  1313. body to

  1314. thrive,

  1315. and those

  1316. who are

  1317. under

  1318. authority,

  1319. I will

  1320. give myself

  1321. to those

  1322. above me

  1323. because in

  1324. the end I'm

  1325. doing it for

  1326. my head,

  1327. I'm doing it

  1328. for Christ's

  1329. sake.

  1330. Imagine if we

  1331. showed a

  1332. different way

  1333. of doing

  1334. authority.

  1335. Or as

  1336. our society

  1337. increasingly

  1338. takes

  1339. offence at

  1340. disagreement

  1341. and cancels

  1342. and divorces,

  1343. we need to

  1344. focus on

  1345. being the

  1346. church,

  1347. knowing we

  1348. are all

  1349. saved by

  1350. grace.

  1351. Imagine

  1352. the community

  1353. of people

  1354. who said,

  1355. I deeply

  1356. disagree with

  1357. you on

  1358. that,

  1359. but I'm

  1360. going to

  1361. keep dying

  1362. for you

  1363. because you're

  1364. my brother,

  1365. you're my

  1366. sister.

  1367. I really

  1368. disagree,

  1369. but

  1370. by my

  1371. actions and

  1372. words,

  1373. I still

  1374. love you.

  1375. Imagine if

  1376. we sat

  1377. under the

  1378. authority of

  1379. God's word

  1380. and patiently

  1381. tried to

  1382. persuade each

  1383. other on

  1384. issues.

  1385. I think

  1386. this view

  1387. of church

  1388. will

  1389. increase

  1390. our grief

  1391. because we

  1392. all know

  1393. the church

  1394. and myself

  1395. and myself,

  1396. we all

  1397. don't live

  1398. up to

  1399. this vision.

  1400. It increases

  1401. our grief

  1402. that we

  1403. have robbed

  1404. God of

  1405. his glory

  1406. when we

  1407. stuff this

  1408. up.

  1409. But I

  1410. don't think

  1411. we should

  1412. be disillusioned

  1413. because the

  1414. creator

  1415. whose goal

  1416. is his

  1417. unified

  1418. church to

  1419. his glory

  1420. has promised

  1421. that the

  1422. bride will

  1423. be adorned.

  1424. We will

  1425. have the

  1426. glory of

  1427. God

  1428. so we

  1429. can keep

  1430. growing,

  1431. we can

  1432. keep

  1433. pursuing

  1434. peace and

  1435. unity.

  1436. if you

  1437. see the

  1438. glory of

  1439. God

  1440. depending

  1441. on our

  1442. genuine

  1443. unity

  1444. in the

  1445. love of

  1446. Christ in

  1447. the church,

  1448. then hear

  1449. the call

  1450. in Ephesians

  1451. 4.

  1452. I urge

  1453. you to

  1454. walk in

  1455. a manner

  1456. worthy of

  1457. the calling

  1458. to which

  1459. you have

  1460. been called

  1461. with all

  1462. humility and

  1463. gentleness,

  1464. with patience,

  1465. bearing with

  1466. one another in

  1467. love,

  1468. eager to

  1469. maintain the

  1470. unity of the

  1471. spirit in

  1472. the bond

  1473. of peace.

  1474. God

  1475. is at

  1476. stake.

  1477. We have

  1478. this high

  1479. calling to

  1480. show the

  1481. heavens and

  1482. the world a

  1483. different way,

  1484. that the

  1485. new creation

  1486. has begun

  1487. here in

  1488. the church

  1489. universal.

  1490. I urge

  1491. you to

  1492. walk in a

  1493. manner worthy

  1494. of the

  1495. calling to

  1496. which you

  1497. have been

  1498. called.

  1499. show the

  1500. world a

  1501. better way.

  1502. Let's

  1503. pray.

  1504. Father, I

  1505. pray that

  1506. out of

  1507. an

  1508. understanding

  1509. of what

  1510. Christ has

  1511. achieved,

  1512. that knowing

  1513. that we

  1514. have unity,

  1515. not that we

  1516. have to

  1517. create it,

  1518. but that we

  1519. have to

  1520. maintain it,

  1521. I pray

  1522. that you

  1523. would be

  1524. convicting

  1525. each one

  1526. of us

  1527. where we

  1528. need to

  1529. be.

  1530. I pray

  1531. that where

  1532. there's

  1533. hostility in

  1534. relationships in

  1535. this room,

  1536. that you

  1537. would give us

  1538. the resources

  1539. and the

  1540. help and

  1541. the perspective

  1542. to seek

  1543. real peace.

  1544. Lord, I

  1545. pray that

  1546. when

  1547. disagreements

  1548. arise,

  1549. that we

  1550. will submit

  1551. to your

  1552. authority and

  1553. seek your

  1554. glory and

  1555. not our

  1556. own sense

  1557. of justice.

  1558. Lord, I

  1559. pray that

  1560. we would

  1561. not just

  1562. love with

  1563. words, but

  1564. we would

  1565. love in

  1566. actions and

  1567. in truth,

  1568. in the way

  1569. that we

  1570. carry each

  1571. other's

  1572. burdens and

  1573. bear each

  1574. other's

  1575. sorrows and

  1576. urge one

  1577. another on

  1578. to live

  1579. for you.

  1580. So, Lord,

  1581. I pray that

  1582. you would

  1583. however we

  1584. need to

  1585. change, I

  1586. pray that

  1587. you would

  1588. make us

  1589. more of

  1590. this unified

  1591. church to

  1592. the glory

  1593. of your

  1594. name.

  1595. Amen.
