  1. New things are all very good, but I'm just giving Simon the license to interrupt me on

  2. the basis that I'm likely to forget about the reading altogether.

  3. So if he just jumps up in the middle of my sentence, you'll know why.

  4. Okay, we're going to be looking at Psalm 9 and 10 this morning.

  5. Just join with me in prayer for a moment.

  6. Lord, our ears would be deaf to your word, except that your spirit opens them to hear

  7. it, and that is my prayer now, Lord, for myself and for everyone here this morning.

  8. Open our ears and bless the benefit of your word to our hearts and minds.

  9. In Jesus' name, amen.

  10. All right, well, we make them every day, hundreds, thousands of them, decisions.

  11. We make so many decisions every day.

  12. Some decisions are big decisions, and we obviously know the process going through those.

  13. But some decisions are actually really, really small, almost the product of habit, the things

  14. we do just every day.

  15. And we now sort of make those decisions and don't even realize we're making them.

  16. But we're still acting on a process of thought.

  17. It's just that we've lost touch with that particular thought at that particular moment in those

  18. small decisions.

  19. decisions.

  20. So just to get you thinking this morning, what decisions will you make this week?

  21. What decisions will you make this week?

  22. What decisions will you make this week in your home?

  23. As a parent?

  24. As a husband?

  25. As a wife?

  26. As a child?

  27. What decisions will you make as you walk out the front door in the morning, whether you're

  28. going to school or work or going to sport or whatever it is you're going to do?

  29. What decisions will you be anticipating and making during the day?

  30. Your decisions will reflect what you think of at home, family life, employment, relationships,

  31. security, happiness, work, success, and so on and so forth.

  32. It will also involve making decisions about our culture and how you actually choose to engage

  33. with it on a day-by-day basis.

  34. Now, all of these decisions, and I say there are thousands of them, all of these decisions

  35. are an overflow of our worldview.

  36. Now, if you're not familiar with the term worldview, there's a bit more in the back of the bulletin,

  37. the back article in the bulletin, a bit more detail about worldview.

  38. But essentially, a worldview can be thought of like my glasses here.

  39. It's a lens through which we see the world.

  40. It's a lens through which we understand the world, we understand God, and we understand

  41. our part in the world, our place in the world.

  42. That's what a worldview is.

  43. How you think about the world, how you engage with the world.

  44. And that means that every single person here has a worldview.

  45. But not every single person here actually knows they've got a worldview and is able to articulate

  46. it.

  47. But you will have one and you will act on it.

  48. It will be the overflow of your thinking.

  49. Now, Psalms 9 and 10 may be considered and described as worldview psalms.

  50. Why?

  51. Because they present two different ways of thinking about God.

  52. Two different ways of thinking about the world and how we experience the world.

  53. Two different ways of thinking about our place in the world in which brokenness and suffering,

  54. injustice impacts us every single day.

  55. We make a decision consciously or subconsciously about how we're going to react or respond to that suffering,

  56. injustice, those experiences of the world every single day.

  57. And Psalm 9 and 10 highlight the challenge that we face to have what I'm calling this morning

  58. is having a thoroughly biblical worldview in which our thinking and actions are shaped by what is true about God,

  59. rather than having our thinking and actions shaped by our circumstances and our personal experiences of life.

  60. We'll come back to that in a little while.

  61. But in the meantime, we're going to look at worldview option number one.

  62. That is God and the world viewed through the eyes or the lens of faith.

  63. And now Simon's going to read the first 12 verses of Psalm 9 for us.

  64. Psalm chapter 9.

    Psalms 9 chapter mention

  65. I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart.

  66. I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.

  67. I will be glad and exult in you.

  68. I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.

  69. When my enemies turn back, they stumble and perish before your presence.

  70. For you have maintained my just cause.

  71. You have sat on the throne giving righteous judgment.

  72. You have rebuked the nations.

  73. You have made the wicked perish.

  74. You have blotted out their name forever and ever.

  75. The enemy came to an end in everlasting ruins.

  76. Their cities you rooted out.

  77. The very memory of them has perished.

  78. But the Lord sits enthroned forever.

  79. He has established his throne for justice.

  80. And he judges the world with righteousness.

  81. He judges the peoples with uprightness.

  82. The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed.

  83. A stronghold in times of trouble.

  84. And those who know your name put their trust in you.

  85. For you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.

  86. Sing praises to the Lord who sits enthroned in Zion.

  87. Tell among the peoples his deeds.

  88. For he who avenges blood is mindful of them.

  89. He does not forget the cry of the afflicted.

  90. The world viewed from the eyes or lens of faith begins with praise and thankfulness.

  91. The focus of David from the very first word is on the Lord.

  92. That is, it's the Lord that shapes David's thinking and actions on a daily basis as he engages with all the experiences of life.

  93. His general orientation is thankfulness and praise.

  94. Now, if you look at verses 1 and 2, there's nothing mechanical about this thanksgiving and praise.

  95. It's not just some prayer he's reciting of.

  96. It's a spontaneous overflow from the depth of his being.

  97. The language there is very, very personal, very, very deep.

  98. He recalls God's wonderful deeds.

  99. That is, God's actions in the past dealing with and caring for his people.

  100. But there's something even more profound, deeper than that in those first two verses.

  101. David's so appreciative and aware of God's character, God's good deeds.

  102. But David's actually delighting in the Lord himself.

  103. His soul is overflowing with the beauty of the Lord himself.

  104. In other words, David's starting point is that the Lord is truly satisfying.

  105. The Lord is his delight.

  106. The Lord is his treasure.

  107. Just to be the Lord's person is sufficient for David.

  108. The Lord is his source of joy and comfort and confidence and hope.

  109. And therefore, worship is natural.

  110. Worship is ascribing the supreme value to something.

  111. And that's what David does to the Lord.

  112. And from there, David actually sees his circumstances from God's perspective.

  113. Verse 3 there.

  114. David's well aware that he has many, many enemies.

  115. But they're not his focus.

  116. He's God's king, tasked by the Lord to rule his people in righteousness and truth and justice.

  117. And that means inevitably that there will be conflict.

  118. But the eye of faith in King David sees beyond his immediate circumstances to the great king whom he serves.

  119. And in whose presence, verse 3, just the very presence of the Lord alone is enough to bring undone any enemy.

  120. And when we think about it, there's something quite remarkable here.

  121. Because King David was a hugely successful king.

  122. He was a very, very powerful man.

  123. Yet, if you read through these verses again, as Simon's just read them to us,

  124. King David acknowledges that every detail of his story, he's actually down to God.

  125. God's rescuing.

  126. God's protection.

  127. God's justice.

  128. God's judgment.

  129. God's purposes.

  130. It's all there in those verses.

  131. It's that that David knows through the eyes of faith.

  132. It's that which keeps him in the present and guarantees his future and the future of God's people.

  133. And then verses 9 to 12.

  134. Not only that, but David leans into or rests in the Lord.

  135. That is his general orientation.

  136. Thankfulness and praise.

  137. Seeing the circumstances from God's perspective and leaning into the Lord at every point.

  138. Confidently and warmly knowing the Lord as the Most High.

  139. It's a very, very lofty term.

  140. The Most High.

  141. There is no greater appeal for David.

  142. There's no greater power.

  143. There's no greater comfort.

  144. And David knows the Most High is the champion of truth, the champion of right, and the dispenser of justice and judgment.

  145. And so David can rest in the Lord in whatever circumstances he faces.

  146. The Lord is so powerful.

  147. The Lord is so powerful.

  148. His rule and purpose cannot be threatened.

  149. But at the same time, the Lord is so invested in his people.

  150. In the well-being of his people.

  151. In the well-being of his people.

  152. That he becomes that stronghold.

  153. That safe refuge.

  154. That place to hide.

  155. The place to rest and be secure and calm in the midst of the mess of life.

  156. The eyes of faith know that no matter the circumstance, the Lord will never abandon or forget his people.

  157. No matter what circumstances appear to suggest.

  158. Simon, you read the next section for it, please.

  159. So chapter 9, 13 to 20.

  160. Be gracious to me, O Lord.

  161. See my affliction from those who hate me.

  162. O you who lift me up from the gates of death.

  163. That I may recount all your praises.

  164. That in the gates of the daughter of Zion I may rejoice in your salvation.

  165. The nations have sunk in the pit that they made.

  166. In the net that they hid, their own foot has been caught.

  167. The Lord has made himself known.

  168. He has executed judgment.

  169. The wicked are snared in the work of their own hands.

  170. Agion.

  171. Salah.

  172. The wicked shall return to Sheol, all the nations that forget God.

  173. For the needy shall not always be forgotten.

  174. And the hope of the poor shall not perish forever.

  175. Arise, O Lord.

  176. Let not man prevail.

  177. Let the nations be judged before you.

  178. Put them in fear, O Lord.

  179. Let the nations know that they are but men.

  180. Salah.

  181. Sometimes we have the notion that when we talk about seeing the world through the eyes of faith.

  182. That we are sort of in denial of reality.

  183. Well, Psalm 9 tells us that's not the case.

  184. The eyes of faith do not mean denial of real and tough circumstances.

  185. Because in verse 13, the tone changes almost jarring from verse 12 to verse 13.

  186. Be gracious to me, O Lord.

  187. See my affliction from those who hate me.

  188. The first 12 verses you wouldn't even realize David was suffering particularly badly.

  189. But here he is, verse 13.

  190. He just pours out something of the depth of the impact he feels on a daily basis.

  191. From his struggle against those who oppose his rule of righteousness and truth under the Lord's hand.

  192. And seeing the world through the eyes of faith does not make King David immune to tough circumstances.

  193. But it does shape his response to them.

  194. That's a really important point.

  195. He's not immune to them because of the eyes of faith.

  196. But the eyes of faith shape his response in those tough circumstances.

  197. And so the worship that was expressed in verses 1 to 12 as praise and thanks,

  198. now I think is expressed in prayer.

  199. Because David now spreads out his helplessness before the Lord.

  200. Before the Lord's goodness and the Lord's grace.

  201. And I think the tone here is really clear.

  202. That David is honest, but he's not anxious in his circumstances.

  203. He's very much aware of those who would try to bring him down for whatever reason.

  204. But he's not overwhelmed by those who would try to bring him down for whatever reason.

  205. Why?

  206. Because of the eyes of faith.

  207. He is convinced that no matter the circumstance, the Lord will have the final say.

  208. The Lord will have the final say in each circumstance of his life.

  209. And then there's a couple of really nice pictures in here.

  210. In verse 13, David pictures the Lord as his lifter up.

  211. Oh you who lift me up from the gates of death.

  212. The Lord is his lifter up.

  213. That is, he's confident that the Lord will take him from the gates of death, which is picture language.

  214. Take him from the extreme danger where it looks as if his cause is just about to get snuffed out.

  215. The Lord will actually transport him from that to, more picture language, the gates of Zion.

  216. Zion was God's city, the place of the good life, the life under God.

  217. The life of blessing and satisfaction and completeness.

  218. The life of purity.

  219. So David is confident the Lord would be his lifter up.

  220. Literally transporting him from there to there in circumstances of life.

  221. And just as surely, the picture has its other side.

  222. Verses 15 through to 20.

  223. The Lord, as the Lord is the lifter up of David, so David is confident the Lord will be the knocker down

  224. of powerful, rebellious people and nations.

  225. As he frustrates and ultimately destroys them with his just judgment.

  226. And so there's a nice little play there on those two pictures.

  227. The arrogant nations, arrogant, powerful people who think they can just do what they like in God's word.

  228. They think they are the lifted up ones.

  229. We're the ones above the rest.

  230. But David can see past that and knows that those who think they're lifted up and then knock down God's people

  231. will experience a great reversal.

  232. It will be God's people ultimately who will be lifted up.

  233. And those who arrogantly think themselves to be high will actually feel and experience God's judgment as he knocks them down.

  234. And so the picture is very, very strong.

  235. Having carelessly rejected the Most High in their arrogance.

  236. And then, despising his beauty, despising his wonderful deeds.

  237. Verse 19 and 20.

  238. One day, those same people will crumble in fear

  239. as God brings justice and judgment to them.

  240. They've made terror their weapon.

  241. And they'll end facing their own terrors of God's judgment.

  242. Now, ready for worldview too.

  243. Simon and I had a discussion before church.

  244. Simon, and there's a good reason for it.

  245. You can think about it.

  246. Simon reckons Psalm 10 should come before Psalm 9.

  247. But we'll go into that in a little while.

  248. Yep, thanks, Simon.

  249. Simon.

  250. Psalm 10, verses 1 to 11.

    Psalms 10:1–11

  251. Why, O Lord, do you stand far away?

  252. Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

  253. In arrogance, the wicked hotly pursue the poor.

  254. Let them be caught in the schemes that they have devised.

  255. For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul,

  256. and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the Lord.

  257. In the pride of his face, the wicked does not seek him.

  258. All his thoughts are, there is no God.

  259. His ways prosper at all times.

  260. Your judgments are on high, out of his sight.

  261. As for all his foes, he puffs at them.

  262. He says in his heart,

  263. I shall not be moved.

  264. Throughout all generations, I shall not meet adversity.

  265. His mouth is filled with cursing and deceit and oppression.

  266. Under his tongue are mischief and iniquity.

  267. He sits in ambush in the villages.

  268. In hiding places, he murders the innocent.

  269. His eyes stealthily watch for the helpless.

  270. He lurks in ambush like a lion in his thicket.

  271. He lurks that he may seize the poor.

  272. He seizes the poor when he draws him into his net.

  273. The helpless are crushed, sink down and fall by his might.

  274. He says in his heart,

  275. God has forgotten, yet has hidden his face.

  276. He will never see it.

  277. Talk about chalk and cheese.

  278. Very, very different pictures there, aren't they?

  279. Between Psalm 9 and Psalm 10.

  280. Very different worldview.

  281. It's part two of the psalm.

  282. And one of the reasons I decided to connect it together,

  283. most English versions and most commentators don't,

  284. but there is some grammatical reasons like 9 and 10.

  285. There's a certain acrostic thing.

  286. Every two verses begins with a particular letter,

  287. a sequential letter of the Hebrew alphabet,

  288. and that runs through the two psalms.

  289. And there's some other reasons why.

  290. There's certainly at least part A and part B, I think.

  291. At least that's my defense anyway.

  292. Talk to me more about that if you want.

  293. Getting into the text of Psalm 10,

  294. then, it's a very different picture of God's world

  295. from a very different starting point.

  296. It's a picture shaped primarily by circumstance

  297. or by the experience of God's world.

  298. Shaped by injustice and godliness,

  299. godlessness rather,

  300. and shaped by how things appear to be

  301. as we look at them immediately.

  302. And again, drawing the parallels,

  303. the orientation as we move into Psalm 10

  304. is not praise and thanksgiving,

  305. as we saw in Psalm 9,

  306. but it's accusation,

  307. it's disappointment,

  308. it's frustration,

  309. all of which is directed at the Lord.

  310. Why?

  311. Because starting with the circumstances,

  312. it just feels and seems like

  313. the Lord has abandoned them.

  314. Worse, verses 3 through to 10.

  315. Far worse.

  316. It feels like the Lord has surrendered his world

  317. to the powerful schemes of godless,

  318. self-made people to do what they please.

  319. And indeed, that is what they do.

  320. They do what they please,

  321. with whomever they please,

  322. when they please.

  323. That's the picture of Psalm 10.

  324. And it's a very, very despairing,

  325. heavy picture, isn't it?

  326. People who arrogantly act as if they are God,

  327. people who are convinced

  328. that they will only ever answer to themselves

  329. and their own selfish desires.

  330. And so, from there,

  331. they take it that they can ruthlessly exploit

  332. anybody that comes within their reach.

  333. It's a pretty horrible picture.

  334. And yet, it's one that's so familiar,

  335. isn't it, Tess?

  336. Even worse, verse 5.

  337. In their godlessness,

  338. and their godlessness is so obvious,

  339. they seem to thrive.

  340. They actually have come to believe

  341. their own propaganda

  342. that success breeds success,

  343. and that they are, in fact, unstoppable.

  344. And again, you only have to listen to the news

  345. to hear some of the most powerful,

  346. influential people and corporations in the world

  347. who maybe wouldn't say that

  348. because it sounds too crude to say it openly,

  349. but that's obviously what oozes out of them.

  350. We will do what we want to do

  351. because we have the power

  352. and the influence and the money to do it

  353. and the position.

  354. And as you go through the detail,

  355. I don't have too much time to stop on all the detail,

  356. but I just want to summarize

  357. some of those later verses in that first section by this.

  358. Verbally, they're predators.

  359. That is, one of the key tools

  360. is to use words.

  361. Whatever words necessary

  362. to bully, intimidate,

  363. and knock people down

  364. or knock them into line

  365. so that they will do

  366. what these powerful, godless people

  367. want them to do.

  368. And practically,

  369. they're predators also.

  370. The language here

  371. is of the most ruthless,

  372. consuming,

  373. and dismissing of people

  374. as just commodities.

  375. Those who are poor

  376. and helpless

  377. and oppressed,

  378. disadvantaged,

  379. well,

  380. obviously,

  381. they're not lifted up.

  382. People like ourselves,

  383. they're just to be used

  384. and discarded.

  385. More fool them.

  386. It's the dog-eat-dog

  387. attitude of our culture,

  388. of our world,

  389. isn't it?

  390. It's so,

  391. so horrible.

  392. These oppressed,

  393. poor people,

  394. they're not,

  395. it doesn't ever occur

  396. to these ruthless,

  397. wealthy,

  398. thriving people

  399. that they should stop

  400. and help them

  401. show compassion.

  402. They're just there

  403. to be treated,

  404. consumed,

  405. discarded

  406. without either

  407. compassion or mercy.

  408. And as verse 11

  409. takes us then,

  410. he says in his heart,

  411. God has forgotten.

  412. He has hidden his face,

  413. he will never see it.

  414. So once again,

  415. you see,

  416. their worldview

  417. reflects what they think

  418. about God

  419. and what they think

  420. about themselves

  421. and what they think

  422. about the world

  423. in which they exist

  424. and operate in.

  425. They're convinced

  426. that they are God-like.

  427. They've pushed

  428. the real God

  429. or any thought of God

  430. into the background

  431. and they've now

  432. stepped into the foreground

  433. as God-like figures

  434. themselves.

  435. And from there,

  436. they try and convince

  437. themselves

  438. that God

  439. does not exist.

  440. So there's an interesting

  441. play and dialogue there.

  442. Earlier in the psalm,

  443. it says,

  444. you know,

  445. there is no God

  446. but then the inner dialogue,

  447. which is verse 11,

  448. isn't quite so self-assured.

  449. In all their godlessness,

  450. they still have to work

  451. to keep calm

  452. on the inside,

  453. convincing themselves

  454. that there is no God

  455. or if there is a God,

  456. verse 11,

  457. then probably hasn't noticed

  458. or he's forgotten

  459. or he just isn't interested

  460. and we will get away with it.

  461. Amen.

  462. Amen.

  463. Amen.

  464. Amen.

  465. Amen.

  466. Amen.

  467. Amen.

  468. Amen.

  469. Amen.

  470. Amen.

  471. Amen.

  472. Amen.

  473. Amen.

  474. Amen.

  475. Amen.

  476. Do you see the thinking?

  477. Even if God exists

  478. and they're trying

  479. to convince themselves

  480. that God doesn't

  481. but even if God does exist,

  482. their thinking is this,

  483. that since God

  484. has not acted against me

  485. thus far,

  486. then I can have confidence

  487. he will not act against me

  488. in the future.

  489. I.e.,

  490. I might just sneak this in,

  491. I might just pull it off,

  492. I might get away with it,

  493. I might actually be able

  494. to run life like this

  495. and not have any consequences.

  496. why would he think that?

  497. well as I said before either

  498. because God has forgotten

  499. that's a view of God

  500. or because God has

  501. overlooked sinful

  502. rebellious actions and that's a

  503. particular world view of God

  504. or

  505. because as per the starting thought

  506. the Lord is deliberately

  507. disinterested in what is happening

  508. in his world and that also

  509. is a world view thought

  510. because that person

  511. will then live

  512. in the light of what he thinks about God

  513. Psalm 10

    Psalms 10:12

  514. verse 12 to the end

  515. Arise

  516. O Lord

  517. O God lift up your hand

  518. forget not the afflicted

  519. why does the wicked

  520. renounce God and say in his heart

  521. you will not call to account

  522. but you do see

  523. for you note

  524. mischief and vexation

  525. that you may take it into your hands

  526. to you the helpless

  527. commits himself

  528. you have been the helper

  529. of the fatherless

  530. break the arm of the wicked

  531. and evildoer

  532. call his wickedness to account

  533. till you find none

  534. the Lord is king

  535. forever and ever

  536. the nations perish

  537. from his land

  538. O Lord

  539. you hear the desire

  540. of the afflicted

  541. you will strengthen

  542. their heart

  543. you will incline

  544. your ear

  545. to do justice

  546. to the fatherless

  547. and the oppressed

  548. so that man

  549. who is of the earth

  550. may strike terror

  551. no more

  552. as per

  553. psalm 9

  554. so

  555. we

  556. have a prayer

  557. to conclude

  558. the psalm

  559. and the prayer

  560. I think reflects

  561. the heading

  562. if you're following

  563. on the sheet

  564. the prayer reflects

  565. the fact that

  566. the eyes of circumstance

  567. ultimately need faith

  568. see because

  569. ultimately people

  570. cannot live in a world

  571. like I've just described

  572. in Psalm 10

    Psalms 10:1–11

  573. verses 1 to 11

  574. we ultimately

  575. cannot live in a world

  576. in which

  577. all we see

  578. is all there is

  579. it would just be

  580. too heartbreaking

  581. and depressing

  582. to view our world

  583. like that

  584. we recognize evil

  585. you don't have to be

  586. a Christian

  587. to recognize evil

  588. we recognize

  589. exploitation

  590. we long

  591. for powerful

  592. and self

  593. powerful

  594. self-interested

  595. people

  596. to be called

  597. to account

  598. for their

  599. terrible actions

  600. we long

  601. for justice

  602. to prevail

  603. we long

  604. for a great

  605. reversal

  606. in our world

  607. don't we

  608. we long

  609. for a world

  610. that we can see

  611. governed by love

  612. and care

  613. and compassion

  614. and truth

  615. we long

  616. for a ruler

  617. who will be

  618. powerful enough

  619. to be in control

  620. and yet

  621. personal enough

  622. to be caring

  623. and compassionate

  624. and merciful

  625. my friends

  626. when we confront

  627. the experience

  628. or the circumstances

  629. of this life

  630. essentially

  631. what we're

  632. longing for

  633. is for the

  634. Lord

  635. to be king

  636. in his world

  637. and I think

  638. that's what the

  639. prayer

  640. verses 12

  641. through to 18

  642. is

  643. as in

  644. Psalm 9

  645. the prayer

  646. there

  647. it's a prayer

  648. for God

  649. to act

  650. in line

  651. with his

  652. character

  653. act

  654. Lord

  655. rise

  656. act

  657. in justice

  658. and righteousness

  659. and compassion

  660. and truth

  661. call to account

  662. that which is evil

  663. my friends

  664. the eyes of faith

  665. are necessary

  666. to confront

  667. the experiences

  668. of life

  669. the circumstances

  670. of life

  671. pushes

  672. almost in desperation

  673. at times

  674. to develop

  675. the eyes of faith

  676. the reality

  677. of God

  678. in his world

  679. then exposes

  680. the nonsense

  681. of

  682. rebellion

  683. without consequences

  684. and we're told

  685. in these verses

  686. God does

  687. see everything

  688. not only does he see it

  689. there's actually more

  690. picture language

  691. it's as if God

  692. is there

  693. with his board

  694. taking notes

  695. on every part

  696. of evil

  697. every act

  698. of evil

  699. he sees it

  700. and he notes it

  701. and he will

  702. call to account

  703. in his way

  704. and in his time

  705. he will

  706. reverse the wrongs

  707. perpetrated

  708. on his despised

  709. people

  710. and the idea

  711. there of breaking

  712. someone's arm

  713. that's picture language

  714. for the culture

  715. of the day

  716. in other words

  717. it is

  718. break down

  719. or render

  720. neutral

  721. their power

  722. it's the right

  723. arm of power

  724. that's been

  725. pictured there

  726. he will break

  727. the power

  728. and influence

  729. of all

  730. who reject

  731. the Lord

  732. and act

  733. as if they

  734. are God

  735. and as we saw

  736. in Psalm 9

  737. there will be

  738. a great reversal

  739. those who

  740. currently

  741. appear

  742. despised

  743. and abandoned

  744. will experience

  745. the blessing

  746. of being lifted

  747. up

  748. the blessing

  749. and joy

  750. of God's

  751. wonderful deeds

  752. being applied

  753. to them

  754. and for them

  755. and those

  756. who currently

  757. use terror

  758. in godlessness

  759. and ruthlessness

  760. who use terror

  761. to build their

  762. lifestyle

  763. will finally

  764. experience

  765. the terror

  766. themselves

  767. but the terror

  768. of God's

  769. judgment

  770. in the upshot

  771. both Psalms

  772. is that those

  773. who step over

  774. the boundary

  775. of humanness

  776. who step over

  777. the boundary

  778. and start to act

  779. as though they are

  780. God

  781. and that they can do

  782. whatever they like

  783. in God's world

  784. with impunity

  785. including rejecting

  786. God

  787. they will be

  788. forced

  789. in another

  790. great reversal

  791. to recognize

  792. that they are

  793. oh so human

  794. and that God

  795. is oh so God

  796. they will be

  797. forced to

  798. recognize

  799. that in fact

  800. they are

  801. what they have

  802. always been

  803. God's creatures

  804. living under

  805. the authority

  806. of the creator

  807. and answering

  808. to him

  809. well

  810. just let me

  811. make a couple

  812. of lines

  813. of application

  814. here

  815. and I'm done

  816. then

  817. the main

  818. line of application

  819. is this

  820. that for us

  821. as Christians

  822. we need to be

  823. careful

  824. not to be

  825. theoretically

  826. engaged with

  827. the world

  828. view of Psalm

  829. 9

  830. but operating

  831. practically

  832. in the world

  833. view of Psalm

  834. 10

  835. as Christians

  836. it's quite easy

  837. for us

  838. and especially

  839. in this congregation

  840. because this is

  841. the language

  842. of this congregation

  843. it's quite easy

  844. and common

  845. for us to say

  846. God is sovereign

  847. that he is in

  848. control of

  849. every circumstance

  850. of this life

  851. but then

  852. practically

  853. we can be

  854. frustrated with

  855. God

  856. because he's

  857. not acting

  858. to call to

  859. account as we

  860. think he should

  861. and when we

  862. think he should

  863. we can become

  864. fixated on

  865. evil and

  866. injustice

  867. exploitation

  868. stuff we

  869. observe and

  870. experience from

  871. individuals or

  872. from governments

  873. or whenever

  874. in political

  875. social economic

  876. religious decisions

  877. and policy

  878. we're seeing it

  879. all the time

  880. and sometimes

  881. we can get so

  882. fixated on it

  883. that it drags us

  884. into Psalm

  885. 10 world

  886. view

  887. we get sucked

  888. into struggling

  889. against these

  890. things as though

  891. we are on our

  892. own as though

  893. if it's not

  894. for us then

  895. these things

  896. won't be called

  897. to account and

  898. won't be dealt

  899. with

  900. we get

  901. frustrated that

  902. the ungodly

  903. are thriving

  904. we start to

  905. fear the impact

  906. of their

  907. ruthless

  908. determination

  909. to squeeze

  910. God out of

  911. his world

  912. we sense

  913. that we need

  914. to get active

  915. and frenetic

  916. about curtailing

  917. their wickedness

  918. and trying to

  919. bring them down

  920. before they

  921. destroy everything

  922. that puts us

  923. in Psalm

  924. 10 world

  925. view

  926. at a practical

  927. level

  928. all the

  929. while

  930. deep in

  931. our hearts

  932. those sorts

  933. of thoughts

  934. are producing

  935. decisions

  936. that shape

  937. our view

  938. of God

  939. again

  940. since he

  941. hasn't

  942. knocked down

  943. ungodly

  944. people

  945. I know

  946. lots of

  947. Christians

  948. then start

  949. to harbor

  950. thoughts

  951. well

  952. that must

  953. mean

  954. since he

  955. hasn't

  956. done it

  957. by now

  958. that must

  959. mean

  960. either

  961. he's

  962. not there

  963. or

  964. that he's

  965. unable

  966. that he

  967. doesn't

  968. have enough

  969. power

  970. or

  971. that he

  972. doesn't

  973. want to

  974. that is

  975. he's

  976. not good

  977. or that

  978. he's just

  979. totally

  980. disinterested

  981. doesn't

  982. care

  983. do you

  984. see how

  985. those sort

  986. of things

  987. start to

  988. frame

  989. our thoughts

  990. of God

  991. deep down

  992. now we

  993. can have

  994. those thoughts

  995. and still

  996. on a Sunday

  997. morning

  998. turn up

  999. all nice

  1000. and shiny

  1001. and sit

  1002. down here

  1003. and say

  1004. isn't it

  1005. wonderful

  1006. that God's

  1007. sovereign

  1008. straddling

  1009. two worldviews

  1010. sometimes

  1011. I think

  1012. and this is

  1013. all I don't

  1014. think

  1015. let me be

  1016. more honest

  1017. sometimes

  1018. I find

  1019. myself

  1020. even

  1021. being jealous

  1022. of the

  1023. thriving

  1024. nature

  1025. of the

  1026. ungodly

  1027. jealous

  1028. of their

  1029. success

  1030. jealous

  1031. of their

  1032. prosperity

  1033. jealous

  1034. of their

  1035. indulgent

  1036. lifestyle

  1037. just wishing

  1038. if I had

  1039. money to

  1040. have a

  1041. holiday

  1042. like that

  1043. if I had

  1044. money to

  1045. buy that

  1046. if I had

  1047. money to

  1048. have a

  1049. house

  1050. like that

  1051. you see

  1052. the world

  1053. view I mean

  1054. and from

  1055. there we

  1056. start to

  1057. think that

  1058. practically

  1059. we're on

  1060. our own

  1061. we need

  1062. to take

  1063. matters into

  1064. our own

  1065. hands

  1066. we are

  1067. on our

  1068. own to

  1069. make the

  1070. best of

  1071. life in

  1072. reaction

  1073. against

  1074. evil

  1075. we might

  1076. then even

  1077. find ourselves

  1078. taking up

  1079. ungodly

  1080. strategies

  1081. to improve

  1082. our lot

  1083. so as

  1084. Christians we

  1085. find ourselves

  1086. starting to

  1087. fight like

  1088. non-Christians

  1089. we want to

  1090. fight and

  1091. win arguments

  1092. we want to

  1093. prove our

  1094. point we

  1095. want to

  1096. better those

  1097. who oppose

  1098. us

  1099. we want to

  1100. protest a

  1101. desire for

  1102. justice

  1103. but as I've

  1104. experienced in

  1105. my life too

  1106. often that

  1107. protest of

  1108. justice is

  1109. actually a

  1110. desire for

  1111. revenge

  1112. I want

  1113. somebody to

  1114. pay for the

  1115. hurt they've

  1116. inflicted on

  1117. and ultimately

  1118. we get

  1119. dragged into

  1120. that Psalm

  1121. 10 worldview

  1122. and then we

  1123. find ourselves

  1124. going down the

  1125. pathway of

  1126. self-vindication

  1127. self-protection

  1128. self-sufficiency

  1129. and ultimately

  1130. I think the

  1131. end of that

  1132. road is an

  1133. attempt at

  1134. self-salvation

  1135. and that is

  1136. a reactionary

  1137. fear-based

  1138. living

  1139. with God

  1140. pushed into

  1141. the background

  1142. most of the

  1143. week except

  1144. perhaps when we

  1145. express our

  1146. anger and

  1147. frustration at

  1148. Adam in

  1149. prayer

  1150. or as I

  1151. say when we

  1152. come to church

  1153. on Sunday

  1154. and piously

  1155. say in

  1156. terms of

  1157. Psalm 9

  1158. praise God

  1159. for his

  1160. sovereign

  1161. control

  1162. it's a real

  1163. trap for us

  1164. we need to be

  1165. real careful

  1166. about it

  1167. well secondly

  1168. and much more

  1169. briefly

  1170. just this point

  1171. here

  1172. remember

  1173. that the

  1174. Lord never

  1175. forgets

  1176. sin or

  1177. rebellion

  1178. but is

  1179. always

  1180. keen

  1181. to

  1182. graciously

  1183. forgive

  1184. I agree

  1185. the gospel

  1186. of Jesus

  1187. is God's

  1188. brilliant

  1189. demonstration

  1190. of his

  1191. righteousness

  1192. in justice

  1193. and judgment

  1194. God does

  1195. not forget

  1196. about sin

  1197. not even

  1198. one rebellious

  1199. thought will

  1200. be overlooked

  1201. ignored or

  1202. forgotten by

  1203. the Lord

  1204. nor has he

  1205. forgotten his

  1206. troubled helpless

  1207. fatherless people

  1208. the great

  1209. reversal

  1210. prayed for

  1211. in Psalm 9

  1212. and 10

  1213. has already

  1214. become reality

  1215. in the death

  1216. and resurrection

  1217. of Jesus

  1218. in John

    John 5:20

  1219. chapter 5

  1220. verse 20

  1221. 60

  1222. 30

  1223. it speaks

  1224. along those

  1225. lines

  1226. God has

  1227. already had

  1228. the last

  1229. word

  1230. in his

  1231. world

  1232. the word

  1233. of judgment

  1234. on sin

  1235. all judgment

  1236. has been put

  1237. into the hands

  1238. of Jesus

  1239. and in a real

  1240. sense has

  1241. already been

  1242. completed through

  1243. Christ's death

  1244. and resurrection

  1245. and therefore

  1246. Christ's

  1247. resurrection

  1248. is proof

  1249. that Jesus

  1250. is who he

  1251. says he is

  1252. and that

  1253. God has

  1254. done what

  1255. he said

  1256. he would

  1257. do

  1258. in terms

  1259. of judgment

  1260. now

  1261. two ways

  1262. to apply

  1263. that

  1264. and then

  1265. I'm done

  1266. for each

  1267. Christian here

  1268. this morning

  1269. there's a

  1270. wonderful freedom

  1271. and assurance

  1272. in knowing

  1273. that Psalm

  1274. 9 and 10

  1275. has already

  1276. been fulfilled

  1277. the prayer

  1278. of Psalm

  1279. 9 and 10

  1280. has been

  1281. fulfilled

  1282. in Jesus

  1283. if you

  1284. as a believer

  1285. here this

  1286. morning

  1287. if your heart

  1288. is genuinely

  1289. oriented to

  1290. living faithfully

  1291. and confidently

  1292. under the rule

  1293. of King

  1294. Jesus

  1295. then

  1296. regardless

  1297. of how

  1298. inconsistently

  1299. you have

  1300. applied your

  1301. eyes of faith

  1302. to your

  1303. circumstances

  1304. regardless of

  1305. that you can

  1306. be sure

  1307. that you will

  1308. only experience

  1309. God's care

  1310. and protection

  1311. and blessing

  1312. even in the

  1313. midst of

  1314. suffering

  1315. that is what

  1316. the gospel

  1317. promises

  1318. and achieves

  1319. for us

  1320. now

  1321. if you're

  1322. someone here

  1323. this morning

  1324. who has not

  1325. yet bowed

  1326. to Jesus

  1327. then can I

  1328. just plead

  1329. with you

  1330. don't ignore

  1331. your inner

  1332. dialogue

  1333. this morning

  1334. don't just

  1335. keep on

  1336. going

  1337. thinking

  1338. well

  1339. okay

  1340. God

  1341. hasn't

  1342. knocked

  1343. me down

  1344. thus far

  1345. in life

  1346. therefore

  1347. maybe

  1348. everything's

  1349. okay

  1350. or

  1351. I hope

  1352. that God

  1353. that might

  1354. be out

  1355. there

  1356. will just

  1357. leave me

  1358. alone

  1359. to do

  1360. my own

  1361. thing

  1362. don't

  1363. allow

  1364. yourself

  1365. even to

  1366. contemplate

  1367. that you

  1368. can continue

  1369. a life

  1370. of autonomy

  1371. or living

  1372. independently

  1373. from God

  1374. pushing God

  1375. into the

  1376. background

  1377. and just

  1378. running

  1379. life as

  1380. you want

  1381. to

  1382. as if

  1383. you

  1384. yourself

  1385. were God

  1386. don't

  1387. think

  1388. you can

  1389. do that

  1390. and get

  1391. away

  1392. with it

  1393. you will

  1394. never

  1395. forget

  1396. or ignore

  1397. your rebellion

  1398. your sin

  1399. in fact

  1400. he knows

  1401. it far

  1402. better

  1403. than you

  1404. do

  1405. you might

  1406. think you're

  1407. this bad

  1408. but the Lord

  1409. knows you're

  1410. this bad

  1411. this guilty

  1412. before

  1413. so the Lord

  1414. will never

  1415. forget

  1416. your sin

  1417. and that's

  1418. a much

  1419. bigger

  1420. problem

  1421. you even

  1422. realize

  1423. but equally

  1424. true of the

  1425. Lord

  1426. he will

  1427. graciously

  1428. forgive

  1429. your sin

  1430. if you

  1431. give up

  1432. your autonomy

  1433. and your

  1434. rebellion

  1435. if you

  1436. come to

  1437. him

  1438. asking for

  1439. grace

  1440. and mercy

  1441. and forgiveness

  1442. then he

  1443. promises

  1444. that he

  1445. will give

  1446. that grace

  1447. and mercy

  1448. and forgiveness

  1449. and he

  1450. will never

  1451. ever

  1452. count your

  1453. sin against

  1454. you

  1455. in his

  1456. sovereign

  1457. grace

  1458. and because

  1459. he's got

  1460. the sovereign

  1461. power to

  1462. do so

  1463. he will

  1464. give you

  1465. a fresh

  1466. start

  1467. into a

  1468. wonderful

  1469. new life

  1470. of blessing

  1471. and security

  1472. so

  1473. back to my

  1474. first

  1475. sentence

  1476. this morning

  1477. what

  1478. decisions

  1479. will you

  1480. make

  1481. this week

  1482. what

  1483. thinking

  1484. about

  1485. God

  1486. and yourself

  1487. will

  1488. govern

  1489. where you

  1490. go from

  1491. here

  1492. and how

  1493. you

  1494. enter

  1495. the

  1496. week

  1497. I'm

  1498. speaking

  1499. now

  1500. both to

  1501. Christians

  1502. and those

  1503. who aren't

  1504. yet

  1505. believers

  1506. pray with me

  1507. again

  1508. Lord

  1509. we easily

  1510. find ourselves

  1511. torn

  1512. between what

  1513. we say

  1514. and actually

  1515. what

  1516. captures

  1517. our hearts

  1518. Lord

  1519. we

  1520. sometimes

  1521. find ourselves

  1522. as I say

  1523. theoretically

  1524. in Psalm 9

  1525. confident

  1526. in your

  1527. sovereign

  1528. purposes

  1529. and control

  1530. of your

  1531. world

  1532. and yet

  1533. practically

  1534. Lord

  1535. find ourselves

  1536. so fearful

  1537. of what we

  1538. observe

  1539. and what we

  1540. experience

  1541. around us

  1542. help us

  1543. Lord to

  1544. re-engage

  1545. with you

  1546. so that our

  1547. theory is

  1548. actually a

  1549. demonstrated

  1550. reality

  1551. we find a

  1552. freedom

  1553. and a peace

  1554. and a calm

  1555. to trust you

  1556. to lean into you

  1557. that you might be

  1558. our stronghold

  1559. our refuge

  1560. in times of

  1561. trouble

  1562. Amen

  1563. Amen

  1564. Amen

  1565. Amen

  1566. Amen

  1567. Amen

  1568. Amen

  1569. Amen

  1570. Amen

  1571. Amen

  1572. Amen

  1573. Amen

  1574. Amen

  1575. Amen

  1576. Amen

  1577. Amen

  1578. Amen

  1579. Amen

  1580. Amen

  1581. Amen

  1582. Amen

  1583. Amen

  1584. Amen

  1585. Amen

  1586. Amen

  1587. Amen

  1588. Amen
