  1. The reading is from Matthew chapter 14, verse 22 to 36.

    Matthew 14:22–36

  2. Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side,

  3. while he dismissed the crowds.

  4. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.

  5. When evening came, he was there alone.

  6. But the boat by this time was a long way from the land,

  7. beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them.

  8. And in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking on the sea.

  9. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified and said,

  10. It is a ghost.

  11. And they cried out in fear.

  12. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying,

  13. Take heart, it is I, do not be afraid.

  14. And Peter answered him,

  15. Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.

  16. He said, Come.

  17. So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.

  18. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid.

  19. And beginning to sink, he cried out,

  20. Lord, save me.

  21. Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him,

  22. O you of little faith, why did you doubt?

  23. And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.

  24. And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God.

  25. And when they had crossed over, they came to the land at Gesenarat.

  26. And when the men of that place recognised him,

  27. they sent around all that region and brought to him all who were sick,

  28. and implored him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment.

  29. And as many touched it, were made well.

  30. Join me in prayer then, just before we turn to God's word.

  31. Lord, I pray you will feed us with your word this morning.

  32. Keep us from distractions.

  33. Keep us from carelessness in the hearing of your word.

  34. Make your spirit work within us, Lord,

  35. both to enliven us and to enlighten us.

  36. In Jesus' name I pray.

  37. Amen.

  38. Amen.

  39. All right, well, I'm going to start with a once upon a time story.

  40. Once upon a time, back in the day,

  41. before satellite navigation in cars and in the phones,

  42. which is probably cut out, most of the young people are ready,

  43. we actually had to send directions to people

  44. if they were coming to visit us in Newcastle

  45. and didn't know the Newcastle district.

  46. We actually sent them directions.

  47. And the directions were always a mix.

  48. A mix of some big landmarks

  49. and some more specific street signs.

  50. Landmarks, of course, being big,

  51. are things that they can't miss.

  52. So the sign on the M1 for the link road

  53. and then the F1 motel and the sports fields at Wall's End,

  54. roundabouts, the Ellamore Vale shops and so on and so forth.

  55. So when they saw the big landmarks,

  56. they knew they were still going in the right direction.

  57. That then allowed them freedom to look for specific signposts

  58. and so eventually they would get to our place.

  59. Now, just park that illustration for a minute

  60. and I'm going to follow up with a question now.

  61. And hopefully the two combined will help us get back

  62. into a study of Matthew's Gospel.

  63. It's been 10 months and we've been in Matthew's Gospel

  64. and we're sort of picking it up at not a natural break.

  65. But hopefully these two things will get us back into it.

  66. So here's the question.

  67. When you come to read something like the Gospel,

  68. like Matthew's Gospel or Mark or Luke or John,

  69. how actually do you read it?

  70. Now that might seem like a very Irish thing to say,

  71. but what I'm meaning is how do you actually engage with it?

  72. How do you approach it?

  73. How do you study it?

  74. What are you expecting to find in it?

  75. Now, so many Christians,

  76. and I have to say sadly so many Bible teachers,

  77. seem to approach the Gospel such as Matthew

  78. as just a series of stand-alone stories.

  79. And those stand-alone stories really aren't connected any more

  80. than sort of, well, to a little bit of a travel log of Jesus

  81. through his three years of ministry,

  82. almost like a trip diary.

  83. Now, the problem with a focus like that

  84. is that it often leaves people just digging into individual incidents,

  85. trying to find application,

  86. trying to find in the details of individual stories

  87. something that we can sort of live by.

  88. And oftentimes it's reduced to, you know,

  89. don't be like this and do be like that,

  90. often focused on the characters in the incidents.

  91. And all the while doing that,

  92. we become oblivious to a big picture

  93. that's been a big portrait of Jesus

  94. that's been developed brushstroke by brushstroke

  95. through each of those incidents.

  96. So, back to my illustration and bring them both together again.

  97. As we move back into the study of Matthew's Gospel this morning

  98. after a 10-month break,

  99. I want to suggest to you that we really need to be

  100. understanding that Matthew has very highly compiled this.

  101. It's very carefully crafted and designed.

  102. He's arranged the account of the life of ministry of Jesus

  103. like a set of directions.

  104. There are big landmark directions,

  105. and then there's more detailed signpost directions.

  106. And these two things combine

  107. to ensure that we arrive at the right conclusion

  108. about Jesus,

  109. which is what the biography is all about.

  110. And so, Matthew's account

  111. of the life and ministry of Jesus

  112. is, as I say, carefully organized and compiled.

  113. It steps us through

  114. critical pieces of information

  115. from time to time,

  116. highlighting big landmarks,

  117. but then oftentimes just following through

  118. with the smaller detailed signposts.

  119. Now, here's the thing,

  120. that each of these incidents are stand-alone.

  121. That's true, they do stand-alone,

  122. but they should never be taken alone.

  123. Because the narrative is designed

  124. as one movement,

  125. one big picture,

  126. building towards one great conclusion

  127. about the Lord Jesus Christ.

  128. So, yes, we read individual incidents,

  129. we see them stand-alone,

  130. but we must never just take them alone.

  131. We must be asking all the time,

  132. what is the big picture

  133. that has been developed brushstroke

  134. by brushstroke

  135. through each of these incidents?

  136. So, in summary then,

  137. Matthew's account

  138. is not

  139. about the people

  140. that Jesus met.

  141. Matthew's account,

  142. as is all the other biographers of Jesus,

  143. is about the Jesus

  144. that people met.

  145. Now, there's a very different emphasis there,

  146. isn't there?

  147. So, we need to read the Gospels

  148. looking for the Jesus

  149. that people met

  150. and what they learned about Jesus

  151. from their actual individual encounters with him,

  152. personal encounters with him.

  153. Now,

  154. does this really matter?

  155. Well, I think it does.

  156. It matters heaps.

  157. It matters both

  158. for our own understanding of

  159. and response to Jesus,

  160. but I think it also matters

  161. for our ability

  162. to introduce unbelievers

  163. to the text of the Gospels.

  164. We need to be able to help

  165. unbelieving friends

  166. who might want to read about Jesus

  167. to know how to read about Jesus,

  168. how to read these accounts

  169. to maximize their understanding of Jesus,

  170. how they're meant to be read.

  171. So, with that introduction,

  172. let's then refresh our big picture

  173. of Matthew's account

  174. of the life and ministry of Jesus.

  175. So, you need to turn back with me now

  176. to Matthew chapter 4.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  177. And I have to confess,

  178. I've done something really stupid

  179. here yesterday.

  180. I had a sheet with all the Bible verses

  181. I'm going to reference on it,

  182. but I didn't print that sheet.

  183. I printed a parallel sheet

  184. somehow or other.

  185. I'm not quite sure how I did it,

  186. but anyway,

  187. the sheet you have this morning

  188. doesn't have any Bible references on it.

  189. So, Matthew chapter 4,

    Matthew 4:12

  190. verses 12 through to 17,

  191. and verse 23,

  192. that's the start

  193. of Matthew's account

  194. of the formal part

  195. of Jesus' ministry.

  196. And at that start,

  197. Jesus declares

  198. that he was Messiah.

  199. He was God's long-awaited,

  200. long-promised king and saviour

  201. who had come into this world

  202. to establish God's kingdom,

  203. that is,

  204. God's rule

  205. over the hearts and minds

  206. of God's people.

  207. And in verse 23,

  208. he gives us his MO.

  209. He said that he'll be doing it

  210. through teaching

  211. and preaching

  212. and healing.

  213. In other words,

  214. he would teach about himself

  215. and how he would

  216. fulfil his mission

  217. and he would demonstrate

  218. his power

  219. to fulfil his mission

  220. by undoing

  221. the effects of sin

  222. through physical healing.

  223. His mission

  224. was about,

  225. principally about,

  226. undoing the effects of sin

  227. and establishing God's kingdom

  228. and he would demonstrate

  229. this as it was developing

  230. by undoing the effects of sin

  231. through physical healing.

  232. Now,

  233. the interesting thing then

  234. is that as we track

  235. Jesus' ministry through,

  236. what we find is

  237. there's a growing opposition,

  238. massive unbelief,

  239. conflict developed,

  240. especially from the Jewish

  241. religious leaders

  242. whom we would have assumed

  243. would be the first

  244. to recognise

  245. and embrace Jesus.

  246. but in fact,

  247. they came to the conclusion

  248. that Jesus

  249. was an evil fraud

  250. and they came to the conclusion

  251. the only option

  252. they had

  253. was to get rid of him,

  254. to murder him.

  255. Things don't seem

  256. to be developing

  257. as the Lord Jesus

  258. thought they might

  259. or are they?

  260. Well,

  261. jump forward then

  262. to Matthew chapter 13.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  263. In response

  264. to this growing opposition

  265. and belief

  266. and conflict,

  267. Jesus teaches

  268. his disciples

  269. a series

  270. of parables,

  271. a series of stories

  272. that have a sort of

  273. deeper meaning into them.

  274. And in those parables

  275. in chapter 13,

  276. I don't have time

  277. to sort of dip into them now,

  278. but essentially

  279. Jesus is saying,

  280. look,

  281. in spite of what

  282. now appears,

  283. be assured

  284. that my kingdom

  285. is real,

  286. has already been established,

  287. it will be successful

  288. exactly as God

  289. intended it to be

  290. and it will be

  291. worldwide.

  292. In other words,

  293. Jesus is saying

  294. to his disciples,

  295. look,

  296. the portrait

  297. of me

  298. and my mission

  299. is still

  300. being painted.

  301. Jesus said,

  302. look,

  303. you can expect

  304. that as people

  305. encounter me,

  306. some will

  307. just turn up

  308. their nose

  309. and

  310. in arrogant

  311. rejection

  312. walk away

  313. from me.

  314. But at the same time,

  315. says Jesus,

  316. some people

  317. will understand.

  318. Some people,

  319. the lights

  320. will go on

  321. and they'll just

  322. turn to Jesus

  323. and it'll

  324. produce great

  325. faith.

  326. Then through

  327. the end of

  328. chapter 13

  329. into chapter 14,

  330. I believe

  331. Jesus presents

  332. a series

  333. of very

  334. live,

  335. what we might

  336. call these days

  337. immersive

  338. experiences,

  339. immersive teaching

  340. experiences

  341. of case studies

  342. that prove

  343. his point.

  344. So immediately

  345. after the

  346. teaching and

  347. parables,

  348. he finds

  349. himself being

  350. rejected

  351. in his

  352. hometown

  353. as Nazareth

  354. and the

  355. cause of

  356. the rejection,

  357. this Jesus,

  358. he's way too

  359. ordinary to

  360. be Messiah.

  361. Then,

  362. he's rejected

  363. by Herod

  364. who sees an

  365. identification

  366. between John

  367. the Baptist

  368. and Jesus

  369. and Herod

  370. rejects him

  371. because,

  372. well,

  373. this John

  374. the Baptist

  375. and this

  376. Jesus guy,

  377. they're way

  378. too fussy

  379. about sin

  380. and righteousness

  381. and I'm not

  382. going to have

  383. that.

  384. But on

  385. the other

  386. hand,

  387. Matthew

  388. records then

  389. a series

  390. of three

  391. miracles.

  392. Actually,

  393. much more,

  394. it's clustered

  395. as three

  396. miracles,

  397. much more

  398. than three

  399. in here.

  400. Immersive

  401. teaching

  402. experiences

  403. for thousands

  404. of random

  405. people and

  406. his own

  407. disciples.

  408. And these

  409. three miracles

  410. add immensely

  411. to the

  412. big picture

  413. portrait of

  414. King Jesus

  415. and they

  416. result in

  417. new understanding,

  418. new faith,

  419. and new

  420. worship of

  421. Jesus.

  422. So,

  423. let's jump

  424. into the

  425. text then

  426. now.

  427. What do

  428. the teachers

  429. about Jesus?

  430. Well,

  431. very simply,

  432. the teachers

  433. that Jesus

  434. is the

  435. powerful

  436. Lord of

  437. the universe.

  438. So,

  439. miracles are

  440. signposts.

  441. when you

  442. say a

  443. miracle,

  444. it's

  445. pointing to

  446. something,

  447. it's

  448. pointing to

  449. something

  450. about

  451. Jesus,

  452. pointing to

  453. a truth

  454. about

  455. Jesus.

  456. And these

  457. signposts

  458. here that

  459. we're looking

  460. at this

  461. morning,

  462. they're so

  463. large that

  464. it's impossible

  465. to miss

  466. them.

  467. It's

  468. impossible to

  469. misread

  470. them.

  471. Jesus

  472. does,

  473. as a matter

  474. of course,

  475. without fanfare,

  476. things that

  477. only God

  478. could do.

  479. it's

  480. that simple.

  481. He's not

  482. limited by

  483. the laws of

  484. nature,

  485. but in

  486. fact has

  487. power to

  488. control the

  489. laws of

  490. nature.

  491. And so we

  492. start just

  493. tracking through

  494. the three

  495. miracles together

  496. very briefly.

  497. We've got

  498. this massive

  499. hungry crowd.

  500. The

  501. disciples don't

  502. know what to

  503. do with

  504. them.

  505. And Jesus

  506. calmly

  507. suspends

  508. the laws

  509. of nature

  510. so that

  511. the finite

  512. resource of

  513. a few

  514. loaves and

  515. a couple

  516. of fish

  517. are extended

  518. to feed

  519. this massive

  520. crowd

  521. and still

  522. have far,

  523. far more

  524. left over

  525. than they

  526. started with.

  527. Only a few

  528. hours later,

  529. move into the

  530. next miracle.

  531. Jesus sent

  532. the disciples

  533. on ahead.

  534. He was

  535. going to

  536. pray for

  537. a while

  538. and they

  539. got caught

  540. in what's

  541. called a

  542. contrary wind

  543. on the

  544. lake.

  545. In other

  546. words,

  547. a wind

  548. that was

  549. swirling.

  550. They could

  551. neither go

  552. forward,

  553. neither could

  554. they go

  555. back.

  556. They were

  557. aiming to

  558. go down.

  559. Again,

  560. Jesus suspends

  561. the laws of

  562. nature and

  563. just comes

  564. to his

  565. disciples in

  566. the darkest

  567. part of the

  568. night when

  569. their need

  570. was the

  571. greatest.

  572. he just

  573. turned up

  574. on the

  575. water.

  576. And not

  577. only that,

  578. but in

  579. response to

  580. Peter,

  581. he suspends

  582. the laws of

  583. nature for

  584. Peter.

  585. He says,

  586. come on,

  587. you want to

  588. come over

  589. here?

  590. Yeah,

  591. come on,

  592. out you

  593. come,

  594. jump out of

  595. the boat,

  596. hope you

  597. come.

  598. Peter walked

  599. on water.

  600. And finally,

  601. when it's

  602. all over,

  603. Jesus,

  604. they get

  605. back in

  606. the boat

  607. and suddenly

  608. that contrary

  609. wind,

  610. that storm

  611. that ordinarily

  612. would take

  613. hours to

  614. subside,

  615. it's all

  616. calm.

  617. And they

  618. safely arrived

  619. at the

  620. shore.

  621. The signposts

  622. are unmistakable.

  623. King Jesus

  624. is a king

  625. like no

  626. other king.

  627. More than

  628. that,

  629. King Jesus

  630. is God.

  631. And in

  632. the context

  633. of conflict

  634. and opposition,

  635. then we

  636. need to

  637. say something

  638. like,

  639. King Jesus

  640. is God

  641. and therefore

  642. he's not

  643. to be messed

  644. with.

  645. Such is

  646. his power

  647. that who

  648. in their

  649. right mind

  650. would think

  651. they could

  652. oppose or

  653. reject or

  654. get rid of

  655. Jesus and

  656. thwart his

  657. purposes.

  658. more

  659. personally,

  660. these

  661. miracles

  662. teach us

  663. that Jesus

  664. is a

  665. compassionate

  666. saviour.

  667. He's a

  668. sovereign

  669. lord,

  670. so big

  671. out here,

  672. but he's

  673. also so

  674. personal,

  675. so compassionate,

  676. so immediate

  677. as a

  678. saviour.

  679. Verse 14,

  680. 14,

  681. if you

  682. look in

  683. the text,

  684. this doesn't

  685. often come to

  686. the surface

  687. when we deal

  688. with the

  689. feeding of

  690. the 5,000,

  691. but before he

  692. even thinks

  693. about feeding

  694. them,

  695. verse 14,

  696. when he went

  697. ashore,

  698. he saw a

  699. great crowd.

  700. What's his

  701. thoughts when

  702. he sees a

  703. great crowd?

  704. He had

  705. compassion on

  706. them and

  707. healed their

  708. sick.

  709. When we

  710. just ponder

  711. that for a

  712. minute,

  713. here he is,

  714. he's surrounded

  715. by crowds and

  716. yet another

  717. crowd.

  718. And Jesus

  719. would have

  720. known full

  721. well that

  722. this crowd

  723. was really

  724. interested in

  725. him as a

  726. sort of

  727. celebrity,

  728. but had

  729. very little

  730. understanding

  731. of him as

  732. king and

  733. saviour.

  734. And it

  735. would have

  736. been real

  737. easy,

  738. I think,

  739. if it

  740. had been

  741. me,

  742. just to

  743. get a

  744. bit annoyed.

  745. That's a

  746. sanitized

  747. version.

  748. But Jesus

  749. had compassion

  750. on them.

  751. And he

  752. healed them.

  753. Now what

  754. was he doing

  755. in doing

  756. that?

  757. Well the

  758. compassion

  759. speaks for

  760. itself.

  761. But in

  762. his generosity

  763. and grace,

  764. he took

  765. this random

  766. crowd and

  767. he gave

  768. them an

  769. immersive

  770. experience.

  771. immersive

  772. teaching

  773. experience of

  774. his character

  775. and his

  776. mission.

  777. Now,

  778. sickness and

  779. disease right

  780. throughout the

  781. Bible is

  782. obviously and

  783. primarily the

  784. symptom of

  785. things not

  786. being right in

  787. God's world,

  788. particularly the

  789. symptom of the

  790. consequences of

  791. sin.

  792. And healing

  793. therefore was

  794. the obvious

  795. consequence of

  796. the effects of

  797. sin being

  798. reversed and

  799. people being

  800. restored to

  801. what they were

  802. created to be

  803. in God's

  804. kingdom.

  805. Healing, as I

  806. said from

  807. chapter 4,

  808. verse 23,

  809. is at the

  810. heart, the

  811. essence of

  812. Christ's mission

  813. as Messiah,

  814. as God's

  815. king and

  816. savior.

  817. fear.

  818. Jump then to

  819. verse 34, 36,

  820. and I want you

  821. to see these

  822. two verses as

  823. bookends of

  824. the three

  825. miracles.

  826. Again, it's

  827. even more

  828. random.

  829. They get to

  830. Gennesaret and

  831. then the all

  832. points bulletin

  833. goes out,

  834. Jesus is here,

  835. bring all your

  836. sick people and

  837. you don't even

  838. have to speak to

  839. him, just brush

  840. against his

  841. clothes.

  842. And again,

  843. Jesus graciously,

  844. generously,

  845. healed them.

  846. As many as

  847. touched his

  848. clothes were

  849. made well.

  850. See, Jesus

  851. has given a

  852. signpost about

  853. himself.

  854. He's

  855. highlighting the

  856. primary focus of

  857. his mission as

  858. Messiah, as

  859. God's king and

  860. savior.

  861. Bookending here

  862. with healing.

  863. But there's much

  864. more Jesus is

  865. teaching within

  866. these miracles.

  867. So go back to

  868. the feeding of

  869. the 5,000 again.

  870. So it's called a

  871. desolate place,

  872. in other words,

  873. a wilderness.

  874. So I think very

  875. likely that as

  876. Jesus fed these

  877. people, it would

  878. have evoked

  879. memories from the

  880. Old Testament of

  881. God feeding his

  882. people with

  883. manna,

  884. in the time of

  885. the Exodus.

  886. You remember

  887. back then, they

  888. were in a

  889. physical wilderness,

  890. lost and

  891. wandering.

  892. Even worse, they

  893. were in a

  894. spiritual wilderness.

  895. They were there in

  896. the wilderness because

  897. they had rejected

  898. God and God

  899. said, this wilderness

  900. is going to be the

  901. death of you.

  902. They were there in

  903. punishment because of

  904. their sin.

  905. And yet, at that

  906. point of lostness for

  907. his people, he fed

  908. them.

  909. He was literally

  910. their life.

  911. He was their

  912. sustenance.

  913. Even though his

  914. people didn't

  915. appreciate the life

  916. and the sustenance

  917. that he gave them.

  918. I think Jesus is

  919. saying to the

  920. crowd, I want you

  921. guys to remember

  922. that story and

  923. then remember what

  924. was said back then

  925. that there would be a

  926. new and greater

  927. Moses who would

  928. come and do

  929. that which Moses

  930. could only

  931. approximate, could

  932. only start, could

  933. never finish.

  934. And I'm he.

  935. And I've come to

  936. effect a new

  937. exodus, a new

  938. deliverance from sin

  939. and death into new

  940. life.

  941. I'm the one that

  942. you need to look to

  943. to satisfy your

  944. spiritual hunger.

  945. And in the same

  946. way, going into the

  947. miracle of the

  948. walking in the

  949. water, in the same

  950. way, Jesus comes to

  951. rescue and the

  952. deliver his people

  953. in the context

  954. here is scary.

  955. It's the darkest

  956. part of the night,

  957. somewhere between

  958. 3am and 6am.

  959. And they're at the

  960. end of their own

  961. resources.

  962. They've battled

  963. all night against

  964. this squall, this

  965. storm, and they're

  966. getting nowhere.

  967. And they're real

  968. danger of death.

  969. And worse than

  970. that, they're

  971. in the common

  972. understanding of the

  973. day and throughout

  974. the Old Testament,

  975. water was

  976. associated with the

  977. chaos and turmoil

  978. of sinful world.

  979. In fact, sailors

  980. believed that the

  981. whitecaps actually

  982. were evidence of

  983. evil spirits in the

  984. waves in the sea

  985. waiting to grab hold

  986. of sailors and drag

  987. them down into the

  988. abyss of death.

  989. death.

  990. These guys were

  991. terrified.

  992. Experienced sailors,

  993. they were on their

  994. home patch of the

  995. Sea of Galilee, but

  996. they were terrified.

  997. And again, throughout

  998. the Old Testament, the

  999. idea repeatedly is that

  1000. the Lord comes to

  1001. rescue his people.

1002. And the picture of the

1003. sea and the turmoil of

  1004. the sea is often

1005. used as a picture of

  1006. God's compassion and

  1007. commitment to his

  1008. people in this world

  1009. of sin.

  1010. And Jesus, verse 27,

1011. comes to them in their

  1012. point of need,

  1013. delivers them from

  1014. almost certain death

  1015. into perfect safety on

  1016. land.

  1017. That's the movement.

  1018. And in one short

  1019. sentence, verse 27, he

1020. teaches them so much in

  1021. the midst of that

  1022. immersive experience of

  1023. fear and terror.

  1024. Verse 27, he says,

  1025. three things.

1026. Take heart or be of

  1027. good cheer.

1028. It is I, or that can

1029. be taken literally as I

  1030. am.

  1031. Do not be afraid.

  1032. Now, that little phrase

1033. take heart, be of good

  1034. cheer.

  1035. Jesus uses that three

  1036. times.

1037. It's used three times in

1038. the Bible, each time by

  1039. Jesus.

1040. In Mark chapter 9, verse

    Mark 9:2

1041. 2, and these were the

  1042. references I should have

1043. on your page, but Mark

    Mark 9:2

  1044. chapter 9, verse 2, Jesus

1045. says to the guy who is

  1046. paralyzed, brought before

1047. him, be of good cheer.

  1048. Why?

  1049. Your sins are forgiven.

1050. In John chapter 16, verse

    John 16:33

1051. 33, on the eve of his

  1052. crucifixion, Jesus says to

1053. his disciples who were in

  1054. torment and totally

  1055. traumatized and confused,

1056. Jesus says to them, be of

  1057. good cheer.

1058. I have overcome the world.

  1059. In Acts 23, verse 11, in a

    Acts 23:11

1060. vision to Paul, when Paul's

1061. life was under great threat,

1062. the Lord Jesus, I believe,

1063. appeared to him and said, be of

1064. good cheer as you have

1065. witness to me in Jerusalem, so

1066. you will witness to me in

  1067. Rome.

1068. Now, in each of those cases,

1069. the context is Jesus undoing

1070. the effects of sin and building

  1071. his kingdom.

1072. Sin would not have, sin or

1073. sinful people would not have the

1074. last word in God's world.

1075. God's saving purpose in Jesus

  1076. would.

1077. Then the next phrase is, it is

  1078. I.

1079. Jesus identifies himself, it is

1080. I, or, as I say in the Greek, it

  1081. could be I am.

1082. And I'm going to run with that for

  1083. a moment.

  1084. You're probably already guessing

  1085. why.

1086. Jesus says to his disciples in the

1087. terror of having exhausted their

1088. own resources and facing almost

  1089. certain death.

  1090. I am.

  1091. Do not be afraid.

1092. You remember the first context

  1093. of that?

1094. Moses was saying, Lord, what the

  1095. heck are you doing?

1096. You're sending me to rescue your

  1097. people from Israel.

1098. That is a humanly possible task.

1099. People won't even listen to me.

  1100. It's so ridiculous.

1101. What will I say to them?

1102. Just say, I am sent you.

1103. In other words, I am the power that

1104. makes the humanly impossible possible.

  1105. Actual.

1106. So I think what Jesus is trying to

1107. say to his disciples here is, the

1108. same God who rescued his people from

1109. Egypt from a picture of bondage and

1110. sin, humanly impossible, same God

1111. who did that, is before you now to

1112. rescue you in your point of need.

1113. To rescue and deliver you from fear

1114. of death into the good life of

  1115. security.

1116. But it doesn't stop there even more.

1117. When Peter is there before the Lord

1118. and suddenly becomes aware of his own

1119. circumstances, his trust in the Lord

1120. falters and he starts to go down.

1121. When he starts to see a situation in

1122. terms of his own ability and resources

1123. starts to sink, once again, Jesus

1124. graciously reached out, reassured Peter

1125. by grabbing him tightly and encouraging

  1126. him to trust more.

1127. It's almost as if Jesus is just having a

1128. little bit of fun with the silliness

  1129. of what Peter's done.

1130. That is, that Peter, having experienced the

1131. power of Jesus to suspend the laws of

1132. nature so he could actually walk in the

1133. water, then couldn't trust Jesus to keep

1134. him safe while he was doing it.

1135. I think maybe that's really what Jesus

  1136. is saying to Peter.

  1137. Come on, Peter.

  1138. I can do this.

1139. Trust me to do that.

1140. Jesus wanted Peter to learn that his

1141. understanding of and confidence in Jesus

  1142. was too small.

1143. Twice in one day, in one day,

1144. Peter had witnessed the power of Jesus

1145. over the laws of nature.

  1146. Unlimited power.

1147. And twice in one day, he had witnessed the

1148. compassion of Jesus to save, to heal, to

1149. deliver his people into safety.

  1150. Yet he faltered.

1151. See, Peter couldn't apply the theory or

1152. what his eyes saw in one situation to his

  1153. own circumstance.

1154. That's essentially what it comes back to.

1155. Yeah, I can see it out there and that's

  1156. wonderful out there.

1157. Wow, how great is the Lord.

  1158. I'm sinking.

1159. Where do I go from here?

1160. Where do I go from here?

  1161. And I think we're like Peter.

1162. This is really all about Jesus.

1163. But just allow me one comment here.

1164. I think like Peter, our problem is so often

1165. not that we're outrageous in our expectation

1166. of Christ, but that we're just not confident

  1167. enough.

  1168. Far too untrusting.

1169. We look at our circumstances and we just

1170. think, wow, they're too awful for Jesus to

1171. protect us and deliver us from.

1172. And so, my friends, the only fitting response

1173. to King Jesus is total worship.

1174. You look at verse 33.

1175. And those in the boat worshipped him saying,

1176. truly, you are the son of God.

1177. Now, my friends, the focus of this miracle is not,

1178. I believe, that Jesus walked on water.

  1179. That's significant.

1180. Nor is the focus, and especially not the focus,

1181. is that Peter walks on water.

  1182. That's incredible as well.

1183. Nor is the focus of the miracle that Jesus calms the storm.

1184. The ultimate focus of the miracle is that all this immersive teaching experience,

1185. all the learning, all the new understanding of Jesus,

  1186. overflows into worship.

1187. Because that's the only appropriate response to understanding Jesus as they've experienced him in these moments.

1188. They've seen him as a sovereign Lord with limitless power.

1189. They've experienced him personally as a compassionate Savior and King.

1190. There can be no other option.

1191. Jesus has shown himself to be God.

1192. And ought to be worshipped.

1193. And we can see how that develops, can't we?

1194. Because initially, we have terror.

1195. But terror is replaced with confidence and trust and security.

  1196. And what's the difference?

  1197. The actions of Jesus.

1198. And so, terror being replaced with confidence and trust and relief and thankfulness,

1199. that is an expression of worship.

1200. As Peter learned from the hand of Jesus,

1201. that having enabled him to walk on the water,

1202. that he would be able to keep him safe while he was walking on the water,

1203. that new aha moment would overflow in worship.

1204. As Peter developed a greater confidence and a greater trusting and dependence on the Lord Jesus.

1205. And likewise, when we get to Gennesaret,

1206. I don't know whether you've ever thought or not, but I've pondered it a fair bit this week.

1207. Why did Jesus allow the crowd, as it were, to set the agenda for them?

1208. Why didn't he chastise them for bringing these hordes?

1209. We're not told they sought Jesus' permission.

1210. They just saw, well, there's Jesus.

1211. Come on, guys, bring your sick.

  1212. They'll get healed.

1213. It seems a bit arrogant.

1214. It seems a bit presumptive, doesn't it?

1215. Is that the right word?

  1216. Whatever.

1217. Fill it in the right word if that's not the right word.

1218. It just feels a bit off.

1219. And yet Jesus doesn't chip them for that.

  1220. Why?

1221. I think I've come to the conclusion.

1222. This might be right, might be wrong, but this is what I think.

1223. I think their actions were an expression of worship.

1224. They clearly didn't understand everything about Jesus,

1225. but they understood enough to know that they wanted their actions to be commensurate with what they did believe about Jesus.

1226. And so they brought their sick to be healed, trusting him to be the one who would heal them.

1227. That is an act of worship, an expression of worship.

1228. And all of this together, then, is real-time evidence that Jesus' kingdom is being built in the hearts and minds of countless thousands of people.

  1229. Random people, special disciples.

  1230. Makes no difference.

1231. For people who encounter Jesus, the Jesus they meet changes their lives forever.

1232. And draws from them worship.

1233. I just want to finish with just a very brief challenge then.

  1234. Everybody worships something.

1235. The definition of worship in that sense is that everybody ascribes ultimate value to something or someone.

1236. That's what it is to be human.

  1237. We worship.

1238. So, the question then becomes, what shapes and drives your worship?

  1239. Worship.

1240. If you're a Christian, then we're told in Romans chapter 12 that worship is a whole of person, whole of life, response of thankfulness, confidence, and trust in Jesus.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

1241. There is no other adequate response if we approach Jesus as Savior and Lord.

1242. So, I say to you again as a Christian, what shapes and drives your worship?

1243. If you're not a believer here this morning, and chances are we've got quite a few who aren't yet believers here this morning.

1244. There's no point in saying that you understand who Jesus is.

1245. That you appreciate what Jesus came into the world to do.

1246. That makes no sense if, having said that, you then continue to be king in your own life.

1247. Or you continue to give your worship and allow it to be shaped by someone or something other than Christ.

1248. See, true understanding will be expressed in coming to Jesus.

  1249. Recognizing your great need.

  1250. Recognizing your sinfulness.

1251. Recognizing that he alone is the one who can save you and deliver you.

1252. Recognizing his compassion and his desire to do that.

1253. And then living your life under his control.

1254. Back to those who are Christians this morning.

1255. Well, the evidence of growing faith and confidence in Christ is better worship.

1256. Now, we need to be really careful today when we say we're looking for better worship.

1257. I would say to you this morning, better worship is not about new hyped up experiences.

1258. They may have a part.

1259. But that's not essentially what better worship is.

1260. Better worship will be the result of studying God's word.

1261. And seeing the power and loving concern of Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

1262. That will overflow in better worship.

1263. As you express greater love for.

  1264. Greater commitment to.

1265. Greater service of the Lord Jesus.

1266. Pray with me again, please.

  1267. Very simple prayer.

1268. Lord, help us to hear your words.

1269. Keep us from hiding from them.

1270. Keep us from excusing ourselves before them.

1271. Burn them deep into our hearts and minds.

1272. And bring us to you for forgiveness as we need forgiveness.

1273. And new worship as we desire to reflect our thankfulness to you.

  1274. In Jesus' name.

  1275. Thank you.
