  1. So that's Matthew chapter 15 verses 1 to 20.

    Matthew 15:1–20

  2. Anyone tells his father or his mother, what you would have gained from me is given to God.

  3. He need not honour his father.

  4. For the sake of your tradition, you have made void the word of God.

  5. You hypocrites!

  6. Well, did Isaiah prophesy of you when he said, these people honours me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

  7. In vain they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.

  8. And he called the people to him and said to them, hear and understand, it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth that defiles a person.

  9. Then the disciples came and said to him, do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?

  10. He answered, every plant that my heavenly father has not planted will be rooted up.

  11. Let them alone.

  12. They are blind guides.

  13. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.

  14. But Peter said to him, explain the parable to us.

  15. And he said, are you still without understanding?

  16. Do you not see whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled?

  17. But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart and that defiles a person.

  18. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.

  19. These are what defile a person.

  20. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.

  21. Well, for those who are visitors, my name is David.

  22. I'm one of the pastors here and I'll be taking you through this passage, Matthew 15, 1 to 20.

  23. Last Sunday, we started to ease back into Matthew's account of the life and ministry of Jesus after a 10-month break.

  24. I spoke last week about the importance of understanding both Matthew's big picture and also the details of the many incidents and personal encounters people had with Jesus.

  25. And I said that we needed to understand that the specific incidents stand alone.

  26. They're stories in their own right.

  27. But we should never take them alone.

  28. Because together, they form what I'm calling this morning an identikit composite of Jesus, who he is and what he's come to do.

  29. If you're familiar with identikit, it's what the police use.

  30. They'll put the eyebrows on and the mouth on and the nose on and eventually they'll get a very, very close resemblance to the person they're trying to describe.

  31. Well, that's what Matthew's doing here.

  32. Bit by bit, he's brush stroking in the picture of Jesus, who he is and what his mission is.

  33. And he's writing particularly to a Jewish audience.

  34. And he's writing to convince the Jews that Jesus is the long-promised, long-awaited Messiah from the Old Testament.

  35. The one who was called God's King and Savior.

  36. The one who would come and establish God's kingdom, God's eternal kingdom, a worldwide kingdom.

  37. That is, God's rule in the hearts and minds of people.

  38. Matthew wants the Jews particularly to understand that Jesus is this man, this Messiah.

  39. He's here.

  40. It's happening.

  41. And so therefore, the big picture of Matthew is that Matthew primarily wants us to see the Jesus that people met.

  42. It's his picture that we want to see emerging from Matthew's account.

  43. The Jesus people met as they encountered him individually and in groups, in all sorts of different circumstances and incidents.

  44. And it's then that the details of the people that Jesus met become really helpful because we then see people's individual and perhaps also group conclusions about this Jesus they've been encountering.

  45. People form conclusions and respond personally to Jesus, either positively or negatively, but they do respond.

  46. So the details feed into the big picture.

  47. And the big picture then, as I say, delivers perspective.

  48. So from the start of Jesus' ministry, the public ministry, Jesus declared himself to be Messiah, God's King and Savior.

  49. Now, we would expect, when that's declared by a Jew to the Jews, we would expect them to welcome Jesus and respond, fall in line and believe.

  50. But in fact, as we trace through the life and times of Jesus, we find actually growing opposition.

  51. Many of the huge crowds who initially flocked to Jesus out of interest had now left the crowds and gone home in bitter disappointment.

  52. Jesus just wasn't the sort of person they expected Messiah to be.

  53. And therefore, Jesus couldn't be Messiah that he claimed to be.

  54. Perhaps some of them left because Jesus wasn't the sort of Messiah they wanted him to be.

  55. In response to his growing opposition, as I said last week, chapter 13, Matthew teaches a series of parables.

  56. And in those parables, he says, my kingdom is like.

  57. And throughout that chapter, Jesus is really saying that in spite of opposition, his kingdom, that is his rule in the hearts and minds of people, was here.

  58. It was happening, already happening.

  59. And that in spite of appearing weak and pathetic and small in the face of opposition, it would flourish.

  60. It would end as a massive, eternal, worldwide kingdom.

  61. It would sweep up all sorts of people who would see him as the treasure they'd look for, the most desirable thing they could imagine.

  62. And they would reorientate their lives to align with the Lord Jesus Christ.

  63. And then after chapter 13, as I said again last week, Matthew illustrates this truth in a series of rejection incidents.

  64. And we talked to those a little bit last week.

  65. And I just want to bring them all together to build this big picture.

  66. So Matthew introduces to rejection in Nazareth.

  67. Nazareth was, of course, Jesus' hometown.

  68. It was his local community.

  69. Now, here's the thing.

  70. In a culture, in a society, where pedigree was everything, lineage and pedigree was everything.

  71. It was a major pillar of society.

  72. What did they conclude about Jesus and his hometown?

  73. Nah, Jesus is way too ordinary.

  74. Way too ordinary.

  75. He doesn't have.

  76. He's the son of Mary.

  77. Yeah, Mary, that Mary.

  78. Then there was rejection by the Jewish royal household.

  79. Chapter 14.

  80. Herod Antipas, who's the son of, also called Herod the, I don't know, I'll get it.

  81. The son of Herod the Great.

  82. He had murdered John the Baptist.

  83. And now he's on the trail of Jesus, thinking that Jesus is a reincarnation of John the Baptist.

  84. Now, remember, this is the second major pillar of Jewish society.

  85. This is the king.

  86. The king who is supposed to rule God's people with God's righteousness.

  87. And here he is lining himself up for a second murder.

  88. Why?

  89. Because he didn't want to be called out for his sinful behavior.

  90. And then as we move into chapter 15, we find the third pillar of Jewish society, the Jewish religious leaders, the Sanhedrin.

  91. They also are ganging up against Jesus.

  92. But we'll get to that in a minute.

  93. But in the meantime, in the midst of all that opposition, and Jesus teaches and shows some miracles, he's providing ample evidence.

  94. He's calm.

  95. He gets on with the business of what he's here for, of healing people.

  96. That is, demonstrating that he's here to undo the effects of sin and renew people.

  97. To bring them into the kingdom.

  98. That is, to bring them under his rule in renewed form as they were created to be.

  99. He's getting on with the business of doing that, calmly, and providing at the same time ample evidence that he is who he says he is.

  100. Only God could do the things that Jesus is doing.

  101. And in the doing of those things, he shows himself to be Lord of the universe, able to suspend the laws of nature at will.

  102. He shows himself to be a compassionate saviour who comes to his people in the midst of their brokenness and sin and lostness and restores them.

  103. And he shows himself to be the one worthy of worship.

  104. We saw all that last week.

  105. Now, we bring all that with us into chapter 15.

  106. That's big picture stuff.

  107. Rejection is real.

  108. But Jesus calmly gets on with the job of building the kingdom.

  109. So let's walk through the incident in chapter 15 then.

  110. So, the Jewish religious leaders throughout his public ministry have constantly challenged Jesus

  111. about what they believed was careless disregard of various aspects of God's law.

  112. And so, you can see what they were pushing for.

  113. They believed that Messiah would never act like that.

  114. So, since Jesus was acting like that, conclusion, well, Jesus had to be a fraud.

  115. That Jesus was misleading God's people.

  116. Verse 1.

  117. It all comes to head when a high-level delegation of Pharisees and scribes, that's the Jewish religious leaders,

  118. arrive from Jerusalem.

  119. And essentially, they ambush Jesus as he's getting about his business.

  120. And what is happening here is that these scribes and Pharisees essentially put Jesus on public trial.

  121. And they do so by launching a formal, serious charge against him.

  122. And the charge is that he's got no regard for the very important practice of ritual cleansing

  123. as defined by the tradition of the scribes and the Pharisees.

  124. Now, in the judiciary of the time, when you were charged like that, you had to respond.

  125. You had to defend yourself.

  126. For Jesus not to defend himself, for Jesus to be found guilty at this point,

  127. left himself open to a punishment of death.

  128. So, this is a major ambush by a high-level delegation.

  129. Let me tell you how it all works, if I can, very briefly.

  130. So, the Pharisees and scribes were very, very, very religious people.

  131. And they wanted people to know that they were very, very, very religious people.

  132. And essentially, they were.

  133. They were good people.

  134. They spent their lives trying to do good, trying to do right, trying to honour God's law.

  135. And they thought they were pretty good at it, to be honest.

  136. Now, they had, the scribes and the Pharisees, we might consider them to be sort of high-level academics

  137. and professors at our sort of theological colleges or something like that.

  138. That's the sort of people we're dealing with here.

  139. But they also had legal responsibility to ensure that God's written law to Moses was kept on every detail.

  140. And also, to ensure that Jewish culture, defined by the ceremonial law given to Moses,

  141. was preserved from generation to generation.

  142. So, the way they did that was they took each written law from the Pentateuch.

  143. And alongside that, they spelled out in detail how that should be applied in any situation,

  144. especially new situations that weren't around at the time of the giving of the law.

  145. And so, what happens over a period of years is that you have these laws,

  146. and then around about them are things that the Pharisees and scribes wrote in

  147. as essential to keeping these laws.

  148. And these things became known as the tradition of the elders.

  149. And they were legally binding and came to have equal authority with Scripture.

  150. Now, a little bit more specific.

  151. They charged Jesus with being careless in regard to the laws of ritual cleansing.

  152. Well, there's some logic to what they've done here.

  153. They read in the Pentateuch that God is a clean God

  154. and will not have any fellowship or relationship with unclean or dirty people.

  155. The Pharisees believed that you could become unclean

  156. even just by touching someone or something.

  157. So, to ensure that God's people didn't inadvertently become unclean,

  158. they formulated these ritual hand-washing traditions.

  159. So, before any eating, you had to wash your hands in a particular way

  160. for a particular length of time.

  161. Now, you can see the logic.

  162. They were trying to protect God's word, trying to protect God's people.

  163. And the traditions grew up around that.

  164. So, they insisted that every person had to ritually cleanse their hands.

  165. Not to do so was to risk treating God with contempt.

  166. And if that was proven, then the sentence was death.

  167. Now, this is what they charged Jesus with.

  168. But verse 3, Jesus immediately launches a more serious counter-charge

  169. saying that they gave their own laws, that is their traditions,

  170. greater authority than the word of God.

  171. And he cites a very, very damning piece of evidence in verses 4, 5, and 6.

  172. So, here's how this works.

  173. God's law was clear that children ought to honor their parents

  174. by supplying their needs as they were able.

  175. But one of the interpretive rules of the scribes and Pharisees

  176. gave people a way out of that.

  177. That is, if they said to their parents,

  178. look, mom and dad, the money and energy and time

  179. I would ordinarily have been putting into you,

  180. I'm actually dedicating that to the Lord's cause,

  181. then they could ignore God's written word.

  182. And so, what they had done was they'd used a man-made tradition

  183. as the basis of excusing people from obeying God's written law.

  184. And that's what Jesus accuses the scribes and Pharisees of

  185. as a counter-charge.

  186. But not only does he accuse them of that,

  187. he really goes to town on them.

  188. They tried to king-hit him.

  189. He's effectively king-hit them.

  190. And he continues then to publicly condemn

  191. these prominent religious men.

  192. Men who appear to be concerned for God's honor,

  193. but he condemns them as the worst sort of religious frauds.

  194. They came to him thinking he was a religious fraud

  195. and misleading God's people.

  196. The tables are turned and now he's accusing them

  197. of being religious frauds

  198. and misleading God's people.

  199. Verse 7-9, look at the harsh words that he uses.

  200. He calls them hypocrites.

  201. Apparently, they're concerned for God's honor,

  202. but even more concerned to see their own traditions upheld.

  203. And they're prepared to distort God's law

  204. about the basis of acceptance and relationship with him.

  205. And Jesus is really saying,

  206. that renders all your so-called worship useless.

  207. Verses 12 and 13.

  208. Effectively, he calls them noxious weeds.

  209. Completely out of place in God's kingdom.

  210. They might claim the authority of God,

  211. they might look and sound like wheat,

  212. like God's holy people,

  213. but Jesus is really saying,

  214. no, I didn't plant them.

  215. They're a totally different species

  216. and they do not belong among my people.

  217. Those are strong words.

  218. In verse 14, he calls them blind guides.

  219. He's speaking of them now with contempt.

  220. Because not only have they been misled themselves,

  221. but they lead God's people to destruction,

  222. not life.

  223. And the irony is just palpable.

  224. The very reason for forming all these traditions,

  225. they said,

  226. was to lead God's people to life.

  227. To make sure they didn't break God's law.

  228. To make sure that in the keeping of God's law,

  229. they would be acceptable to God.

  230. And Jesus says,

  231. blind guides,

  232. you're leading God's people to death

  233. down this pathway.

  234. So the question then is,

  235. is Jesus over the top

  236. in his condemnation of these

  237. eminent,

  238. religious,

  239. good people?

  240. Surely,

  241. you could say,

  242. they had good concerns.

  243. Surely,

  244. you could say,

  245. they wanted people to come to God

  246. carefully and properly.

  247. Surely,

  248. they were right to point out

  249. that God expected his people

  250. to keep the ceremonial law.

  251. That was the whole purpose

  252. in giving it in the first place.

  253. Surely,

  254. their desire to protect

  255. traditional values and practices

  256. was commendable.

  257. Surely,

  258. these guys deserve some credit.

  259. And yet,

  260. there's just

  261. complete condemnation.

  262. So the question

  263. the rest of my time this morning is,

  264. why?

  265. Why does Jesus condemn them

  266. so completely?

  267. I think the answer is really,

  268. really simple

  269. and I'll dig into it.

  270. I think he condemns them

  271. ultimately because

  272. he hates religion.

  273. Jesus hates religion

  274. and religious people.

  275. That might sound a bit weird

  276. for somebody in a church

  277. to say that Jesus hates religion.

  278. The religious understanding

  279. and thinking

  280. was so fundamentally wrong

  281. that affected everything else

  282. and undid everything else

  283. about these people.

  284. it's a little bit like a house

  285. can look absolutely magnificent

  286. when it's just been built.

  287. But if it's discovered

  288. that the foundations

  289. are totally dodgy,

  290. then there's only one way ahead

  291. and that is

  292. you demolish the whole thing.

  293. So,

  294. let's dig into that a little bit

  295. about why Jesus

  296. condemns them.

  297. The first point

  298. I want to highlight here

  299. is that they refused

  300. to know themselves

  301. properly.

  302. They refused

  303. to know themselves

  304. properly.

  305. what they had done

  306. was convince themselves

  307. that externals

  308. or appearance

  309. was what mattered

  310. in terms of being

  311. acceptable to God.

  312. Do this.

  313. Keep this law.

  314. Not only will you look good

  315. to those around you

  316. but you'll be acceptable

  317. to God.

  318. And the doing of religious things

  319. was what they emphasized

  320. as pleasing to God

  321. but were completely

  322. oblivious

  323. of heart attitudes.

  324. Now,

  325. I remind you again

  326. that these guys

  327. were the gatekeepers

  328. of God's word.

  329. But they were willfully

  330. ignorant of it.

  331. Verse 11,

  332. Jesus tells them

  333. sin or uncleanness

  334. comes from the inside out

  335. not the outside in.

  336. Jesus said

  337. it's what a person

  338. is in their heart

  339. in their nature

  340. born state

  341. which makes a person

  342. unacceptable to God

  343. and unworthy

  344. of relationship

  345. with him.

  346. Now,

  347. here's the rub

  348. for these Pharisees

  349. and the scribes.

  350. This was not new teaching.

  351. This is what

  352. Moses had taught.

  353. This is what

  354. Joshua taught.

  355. This is what

  356. King David had taught.

  357. This is what

  358. the prophets

  359. one after the other

  360. over a hundred of years

  361. had all testified to.

  362. they had condemned

  363. any thought

  364. of self-righteousness.

  365. They kept on saying

  366. to God's people,

  367. your heart

  368. is far from God.

  369. You're doing all

  370. the right external things

  371. but your heart

  372. is far from God

  373. and God is not

  374. pleased with you.

  375. And the prophets

  376. condemned

  377. any notion

  378. of self-righteousness,

  379. self-salvation

  380. and they pushed

  381. God's people

  382. to look

  383. for God's grace.

  384. self-righteousness.

  385. So these guys

  386. willfully

  387. refused

  388. to know

  389. themselves properly

  390. but even worse

  391. they failed

  392. to know God

  393. properly

  394. and were actually

  395. I think in practice

  396. determined to shape

  397. God

  398. to their own

  399. thinking.

  400. Possibly they weren't

  401. even conscious

  402. of doing that

  403. but because of the way

  404. they viewed

  405. their traditions

  406. I think they inevitably

  407. started to do that.

  408. These religious people

  409. and they were

  410. religious people

  411. they were good people

  412. they had enormous

  413. reputation

  414. across society.

  415. They believed

  416. sincerely

  417. they could create

  418. good relationship

  419. with God

  420. through their own

  421. actions and efforts.

  422. But as Jesus

  423. says in verse 9

  424. quoting

  425. from the Old Testament

  426. the whole thing

  427. is worthless

  428. in vain

  429. do they worship me.

  430. In other words

  431. good actions

  432. underpinned

  433. by a bad heart

  434. are useless.

  435. Their engagement

  436. with God

  437. was not because

  438. he was desirable

  439. and the ultimate

  440. treasure

  441. as Jesus

  442. had taught

  443. in the parables

  444. in Matthew 13

  445. their ultimate

  446. reason for engaging

  447. with God

  448. was self-salvation.

  449. Their life

  450. was spent

  451. trying to be holy

  452. trying to be good

  453. trying to look good

  454. because they believed

  455. this would

  456. secure

  457. and guarantee

  458. their place

  459. in heaven.

  460. And so

  461. they brought

  462. that with them

  463. when they came

  464. to God.

  465. And as I was

  466. preparing this

  467. I was thinking

  468. about the

  469. other reference

  470. where the

  471. Pharisee

  472. and the tax

  473. collector

  474. and the Pharisee

  475. said

  476. in his opening

  477. of his prayer

  478. Lord thank you

  479. I'm not like

  480. these other people.

  481. That was

  482. where they'd

  483. got to.

  484. And verse 12

  485. even when

  486. Jesus

  487. made

  488. it clear

  489. to them

  490. that they

  491. were wrong

  492. these

  493. guys

  494. and remember

  495. again

  496. they're gatekeepers

  497. of God's word

  498. these guys

  499. chose to be

  500. offended

  501. rather than

  502. be corrected.

  503. they didn't

  504. like

  505. the idea

  506. of having

  507. to look

  508. at their

  509. heart

  510. attitudes.

  511. They didn't

  512. like the idea

  513. of being guilty

  514. and rebellious

  515. on the inside

  516. in their hearts

  517. before the Lord

  518. because they

  519. had put all

  520. their efforts

  521. into what

  522. was on the

  523. outside.

  524. And ultimately

  525. in being

  526. offended at

  527. Jesus

  528. rather than

  529. being open

  530. to correction

  531. and thinking

  532. my goodness

  533. me

  534. he's right

  535. we're the

  536. gatekeepers

  537. of God's word

  538. and somewhere

  539. along the line

  540. we've lost it.

  541. Rather than

  542. taking that

  543. line

  544. they thought

  545. how dare

  546. Jesus say

  547. that to us.

  548. ultimately

  549. they rejected

  550. Jesus' word

  551. for their

  552. own views.

  553. And ultimately

  554. as Jesus

  555. here says

  556. to them

  557. ultimately

  558. they were

  559. very keen

  560. on salvation

  561. and talking

  562. about salvation

  563. but it was

  564. salvation

  565. according to

  566. their standards.

  567. and they

  568. were showing

  569. themselves here

  570. prepared to

  571. manipulate

  572. God

  573. and even

  574. twist or

  575. bypass his

  576. standards

  577. for their

  578. standards.

  579. And for those

  580. who claim to be

  581. gatekeepers of

  582. God's word

  583. you can sense

  584. now something

  585. of Jesus'

  586. ire at them.

  587. And the

  588. third thing

  589. is that they

  590. wouldn't accept

  591. their need

  592. for what

  593. Jesus was

  594. offering.

  595. Verse 19

  596. Jesus gives

  597. a catalogue

  598. of the heart

  599. for out of

  600. the heart

  601. come evil

  602. thoughts

  603. murder

  604. adultery

  605. sexual

  606. immorality

  607. theft

  608. false witness

  609. slander

  610. these are

  611. what defile

  612. a person

  613. but to eat

  614. with unwashed

  615. hand

  616. that doesn't

  617. defile anybody.

  618. Jesus gives

  619. a description

  620. of what's

  621. inside each

  622. one of us

  623. and that's

  624. not a

  625. comprehensive

  626. that's just

  627. an illustrator

  628. of the list.

  629. All of us

  630. in our

  631. nature born

  632. state

  633. have the

  634. same

  635. bad heart

  636. and are

  637. capable of

  638. the same

  639. terrible thoughts

  640. and attitudes

  641. and actions.

  642. we can't

  643. explain it

  644. away.

  645. Our society

  646. wants to

  647. explain it

  648. away.

  649. Well

  650. it's only

  651. looked at

  652. because of

  653. unemployment

  654. or because

  655. our youngsters

  656. have bad

  657. role models

  658. or because

  659. there's so much

  660. violence online

  661. and in gaming

  662. videos

  663. or because

  664. they get into

  665. bad company.

  666. we don't

  667. need circumstances

  668. to prompt

  669. us to

  670. these sorts

  671. of things.

  672. We don't

  673. need others

  674. to teach

  675. us these

  676. sorts of

  677. things.

  678. Just hang

  679. around a

  680. two-year-old

  681. for half an

  682. hour.

  683. We don't

  684. need Satan

  685. to tempt us

  686. into these

  687. things.

  688. We can't

  689. blame it on

  690. him either.

  691. Not

  692. ultimately

  693. or not

  694. immediately.

  695. sin

  696. naturally

  697. arises

  698. in our

  699. own

  700. hearts

  701. and

  702. overflows

  703. out of

  704. us.

  705. What a

  706. tragedy

  707. that these

  708. religious leaders

  709. for all

  710. their knowledge

  711. of God,

  712. for all

  713. their knowledge

  714. of the Old

  715. Testament,

  716. for all

  717. their years

  718. of study

  719. did not

  720. see what

  721. is on

  722. almost every

  723. page of the

  724. Old

  725. Testament.

  726. that God

  727. measures the

  728. state of

  729. our hearts

  730. against his

  731. word.

  732. And that

  733. leaves us

  734. undone.

  735. But the

  736. tragedy is

  737. even worse

  738. because these

  739. guys, because

  740. they were so

  741. committed to

  742. their actual

  743. thinking and

  744. so dull to

  745. what Jesus

  746. was saying

  747. to them,

  748. they couldn't

  749. even see

  750. that they

  751. were actually

  752. talking to

  753. the heart

  754. specialist.

  755. As people

  756. who had bad

  757. hearts desperately

  758. needing them

  759. renewed,

  760. they were

  761. actually talking

  762. to the

  763. heart

  764. specialist.

  765. the one who

  766. knows the

  767. nature and

  768. extent of sin

  769. in the

  770. heart.

  771. The one who

  772. knows precisely

  773. how to

  774. treat it,

  775. how to

  776. undo its

  777. effects.

  778. The one

  779. who's shown

  780. himself in

  781. preceding

  782. incidents to

  783. be the one

  784. who comes with

  785. compassion to

  786. those who are

  787. lost and

  788. destroyed by

  789. sin with a

  790. willingness to

  791. heal and

  792. restore and

  793. renew.

  794. the people

  795. at Gennesaret,

  796. they just

  797. came to

  798. Jesus and

  799. Jesus willingly,

  800. gladly dispensed

  801. grace and

  802. healing to

  803. them at the

  804. very moment of

  805. their most

  806. being aware of

  807. being caught up

  808. in the tragedy

  809. of sin.

  810. And that's

  811. why the

  812. Jesus people

  813. met in

  814. this public

  815. confrontation

  816. hates religion

  817. and religious

  818. people.

  819. And as I've

  820. already said,

  821. this incident

  822. is in such

  823. sharp contrast

  824. with Jesus

  825. reaching out

  826. as the

  827. compassionate

  828. saviour to

  829. those who

  830. knew they

  831. were

  832. caught up

  833. in the

  834. power and

  835. the effects

  836. of sin

  837. and came

  838. to Jesus

  839. in their

  840. sinful,

  841. hopeless state

  842. for healing.

  843. As opposed

  844. to these

  845. guys who

  846. came to

  847. Jesus wanting

  848. to take

  849. him down

  850. because they

  851. didn't need

  852. healing.

  853. They were

  854. the ones who

  855. were telling

  856. Jesus what

  857. was right.

  858. The contrast

  859. couldn't be

  860. clear.

  861. And next

  862. week when we

  863. jump into it,

  864. the next

  865. incident is the

  866. faith of a

  867. Canaanite woman.

  868. And I can't

  869. help but just

  870. dip into it

  871. for a minute.

  872. Here was

  873. this woman.

  874. She wasn't

  875. a Jew.

  876. She wasn't

  877. even a Jew.

  878. So she

  879. didn't have

  880. any lineage,

  881. any pedigree.

  882. She was a

  883. woman in

  884. those days,

  885. a Canaanite

  886. woman.

  887. She had no

  888. power influence.

  889. She had no

  890. access to the

  891. Jewish temple.

  892. all she had

  893. was her words

  894. to plead with

  895. Jesus to

  896. heal her

  897. daughter.

  898. And the

  899. contrast, he

  900. condemns these

  901. religious leaders,

  902. these guys who

  903. know their

  904. Bible back

  905. to front, and

  906. he commands

  907. this woman.

  908. contrast is

  909. just phenomenal.

  910. Big picture,

  911. contrast is

  912. phenomenal.

  913. So friends, let

  914. me just wind up

  915. here now.

  916. Please don't

  917. settle for

  918. religious

  919. appearance

  920. without gospel

  921. reality.

  922. It's so

  923. easy to

  924. do.

  925. So easy

  926. to do.

  927. Jesus'

  928. gospel message,

  929. the very

  930. reason Jesus

  931. came into

  932. the world,

  933. is to tell

  934. people that he

  935. is the

  936. complete

  937. provision

  938. for our

  939. most desperate

  940. need.

  941. He is the

  942. only provision

  943. for our

  944. most desperate

  945. need.

  946. Jesus'

  947. mission is

  948. about telling

  949. us that he's

  950. come to people

  951. who have bad

  952. hearts, and

  953. he's come to

  954. his people with

  955. bad hearts as

  956. the one who's

  957. able to renew

  958. bad hearts.

  959. He comes to

  960. those who have

  961. a bad track

  962. record with

  963. God because of

  964. sin and

  965. disobedience, and

  966. he comes as

  967. the one who

  968. will wipe that

  969. bad track

  970. record.

  971. he wiped the

  972. bad track.

  973. When he died,

  974. for his people,

  975. he wiped the

  976. bad record of

  977. unacceptable

  978. thoughts,

  979. attitudes,

  980. and actions,

  981. and he gave us

  982. a good record

  983. instead,

  984. putting us back

  985. into good

  986. relationship with

  987. God, but not

  988. done there.

  989. He gave us

  990. new hearts,

  991. changed us from

  992. the inside out,

  993. changing us from

  994. the inside out,

  995. so we have new

  996. thoughts, new

  997. desires, new

  998. attitudes, which

  999. prompt us to new

  1000. obedience to love

  1001. God.

  1002. So, friends,

  1003. believers or

  1004. Christians are

  1005. chug and cheese

  1006. with religious

  1007. people.

  1008. Now, we've got to

  1009. nuance that a little

  1010. bit.

  1011. At first glance,

  1012. it might not

  1013. look that much

  1014. different.

  1015. It's hard to see

  1016. sometimes the

  1017. difference between

  1018. a religious person

  1019. and a true

  1020. believer,

  1021. because they do

  1022. the same sorts of

  1023. things.

  1024. The critical thing

  1025. here is they do

  1026. the same sort of

  1027. things, but for

  1028. vastly different

  1029. reasons and

  1030. motivation,

  1031. from a vastly

  1032. different perspective.

  1033. religious people

  1034. go to church,

  1035. they give their

  1036. money, they read

  1037. their Bible, they

  1038. try to be good,

  1039. in an attempt to

  1040. make themselves

  1041. acceptable to

  1042. God, to save

  1043. themselves.

  1044. Believers do

  1045. the same thing,

  1046. believers do the

  1047. same things, by

  1048. and large, but

  1049. it's because they've

  1050. already been saved

  1051. by grace, and

  1052. they want to

  1053. respond to that in

  1054. an overflow of

  1055. love and

  1056. thankfulness and

  1057. obedience.

  1058. Because Jesus

  1059. has done for

  1060. them what they

  1061. could never do

  1062. for themselves,

  1063. and that is deal

  1064. with their sin and

  1065. truly make them

  1066. acceptable to

  1067. God.

  1068. So a believer's

  1069. orientation and

  1070. motivation to do

  1071. what is pleasing to

  1072. the Lord is

  1073. heart-driven,

  1074. inside-out

  1075. overflow of joy,

  1076. overflow of

  1077. delight, an

  1078. overflow of

  1079. love in

  1080. response to

  1081. God's grace and

  1082. mercy.

1083. So I just want to

  1084. wrap up by

  1085. pointing two

  1086. different directions.

  1087. So if you're a

  1088. religious person

  1089. here this morning,

  1090. that is if you

  1091. haven't actually

  1092. encountered Jesus,

  1093. if you haven't

  1094. realized that you

  1095. cannot do it on

  1096. your own strength,

  1097. you cannot earn

  1098. God's favor,

  1099. then I point you

  1100. to verse 10 and

  1101. verse 16 where

  1102. Jesus says,

  1103. you need to pay

  1104. attention, you

  1105. need to understand,

  1106. because your bad

  1107. heart will actually

  1108. make you dull to

  1109. the basic truths

  1110. about yourself and

  1111. God.

  1112. God's favor of

  1113. God.

1114. You need to ask for

  1115. understanding these

  1116. key areas.

  1117. Ask for Jesus to

  1118. show you how your

  1119. best efforts will

  1120. never be good

  1121. enough because you

  1122. cannot meet God's

  1123. standard of

  1124. perfection in your

  1125. own strength.

  1126. And that will point

  1127. you to the Lord

  1128. Jesus Christ.

  1129. And as you're doing

  1130. that, remember this,

  1131. that these guys

  1132. here came with

  1133. impeccable

  1134. credentials.

  1135. They had massively

  1136. good reputations.

  1137. They were just good

  1138. people.

  1139. And Jesus

  1140. condemns them.

  1141. Yet in previous

  1142. incidents, he opens

  1143. his arms warmly to

  1144. anybody who comes to

  1145. him with an

  1146. awareness of sin.

  1147. Just saying,

  1148. Jesus, I need your

  1149. help.

1150. I need you to fix

  1151. me on the inside.

  1152. I need you to

  1153. renew me.

  1154. And if you've

  1155. already been

  1156. changed by Jesus

  1157. and now trust him

  1158. alone to make you

  1159. secure and keep you

  1160. secure, then my

  1161. friend, I don't need

  1162. to tell you, you

  1163. know just how much

  1164. grace you've received

  1165. in your life.

  1166. And you know that

  1167. grace every day in

  1168. face of your

  1169. disobedience.

  1170. grace.

  1171. And you know that

  1172. grace.

  1173. So then surely we'll

  1174. want to guard our

  1175. thoughts, guard our

  1176. hearts so that they

  1177. continue to overflow

  1178. with thankfulness and

  1179. joy because the Lord

  1180. is our treasure.

  1181. Pray with me.

  1182. Lord, everything in our

  1183. society and indeed in

  1184. so many churches

  1185. around Australia would

  1186. say that religion is

  1187. good.

  1188. And yet your word,

  1189. Lord, shows it's

  1190. condemned.

  1191. I pray, Lord, that

  1192. there might not be

  1193. anybody here this

  1194. morning who

  1195. perseveres in a

  1196. religious way of

  1197. thinking.

  1198. Lord, help us to

  1199. measure ourselves

  1200. against your

  1201. standard of

  1202. perfection and from

  1203. there, Lord, see

  1204. that we're done for

  1205. because we cannot

  1206. consistently do or

  1207. say the things that

  1208. would be acceptable

  1209. to you.

  1210. Lord, help us to

  1211. come to Jesus for

  1212. that first encounter

  1213. and have the freedom

  1214. of knowing that he

1215. will do for us that

  1216. which we could never

  1217. do even though we

  1218. spend a lifetime of

  1219. effort trying to.

1220. That is he will make

  1221. us acceptable to

  1222. Jesus by dealing

  1223. with our sins.

  1224. Make us acceptable

  1225. to God by dealing

  1226. with our sins.

1227. And Lord, help us to

  1228. just throw ourselves

  1229. on Jesus knowing that

  1230. he will never

  1231. reject or condemn

  1232. those who come to

  1233. him with a full

  1234. awareness of sin and

1235. a full desire for his

  1236. renewal.

  1237. But Lord, help us

  1238. also remember that he

  1239. will condemn those

1240. who dare to come to

  1241. him on a religious

  1242. basis, pleading their

  1243. own merits as a

  1244. reason for acceptance

  1245. and passage into

  1246. heaven.

  1247. Help us to

  1248. understand these

  1249. profound things in

  1250. Jesus' name.
